$300 tv, worthless to fix
Reviewed April 1, 2008
My husband and I purchased a 52 in RCA hdtv/monitor from walmart on 3/1/05. We paid around $1000.00 for this tv and you can't even get it to turn on. We have no children at home and this tv is still in new condition other than it won't work. Why is RCA able to produce a product like this and get away with it? The model# is D52W19BYX1 SERIAL# F025C302C.
We either have to purchase a new TV or do without.

We purchased an RCA 32" sdtv on 6/14/07. I have always had problems turning the set off with the remote, but I assumed that it was just me. My TV went out about a month ago, and then it came back on and worked until about a week and half ago. I called and got the name of the repair shop located closest to my home. We took the TV to this shop, explained the problem, and he said he'd check it out and call us back. The repairman called and said the TV would cost $218.00 to fix (the parts are still under warranty-the labor is not). I looked around the repairman's shop and saw several TV's exactly like mine - all broken.
I have had no problems with RCA in the past, however I paid extra in the Walmart store to buy the RCA brand. I will be sure to tell all my family and friends (and anyone else who will listen) that I WILL NEVER PURCHASE AN RCA TV AGAIN. MY ADVICE IS: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON AN RCA BRAND. I will also contact the Better Business Bureau.

I bought a 50 inch hd TVrear proj. RCA and had it for two months when the lamp went out . I waited 2 months for the lamp and had it working for another 4 months. As soon as the warranty went off, the color wheel went. Now I can't find a color wheel for that model and can't get any support from RCA. Never again will I buy an RCA product.

I bought a new RCA 42 inch flat screen LCD TV in May of 2007. The sound stopped working October 4, 2007. The authorized dealer could not fix it. RCA said they would replace the TV; they did not. Then RCA said they would refund my money; they have not. I have called them once a week for 5 months, with no resolution. You cannot speak to a manager, there are no other numbers to call, no one from the company calls you, the phone calls are usually long, no resolution in sight. I called a lawyer today. I'm going to sue them for not only my TV, but for the five months of cable I've been paying for because they keep telling me they will resolve this matter in 2-4 weeks. I don't want to pay the $500 penalty my cable company will charge for ending the service before the contract is up. I also want money for all my phone calls. I bought the TV with cash. I just went out last Saturday to purchase a SONY TV. I had to finance it because RCA has not refunded my money yet. I think RCA should be responsible for my newly acquired finance charges as well.
I'm out almost $3,000 over this ordeal.

I purchased two 50" HD DLP TVs, both from Walmart. The first one was purchased in Oct. 2005 and the second in Sept. 2006. I paid $2000.00 for each one. Within 15 months of purchasing each one, my picture went out on both TV's. I did some trouble shooting and believe the problem is with the bulb. I called to find out about ordering a bulb only to find out that the cost is $200.00 per bulb plus shipping and tax. That is an outrageous price to have to pay every 14-15 months to replace. The bulb is replacement is supposed to customer friendly and pretty simple to replace. I thought I would replace it myself. Not at that cost. I am very disappointed with this product and the company for the way their customer service dept. handled things. I had to call back after they would transfer me to each dept., and then they would tell me they had no information after giving them the information on both products 4 times. They still have not helped me with anything to date.
I think they need to recall these bulbs as I have seen several complaints on the same product for the same thing. I have two of the same, and how ironic they both have the same problem--and how odd that they both went out within the same amount of time frame for the running of the product, which was not often. The TV's were on usually only in the evening hours for approx. 4-5 hrs. during winter months. This product is a big disappointment, and I may have to buy another TV. For with the price of two bulbs ($400.00 plus tax and shipping), I could buy another TV product from another company. I never had RCA TV's before, and I do not think I will ever purchase another one. This is not cost effective to us consumers who purchased this junk. I would think RCA would better back their product strictly because of the name they have behind them. Guess not!
The consequences to me are that I have to either come up with $400.00+ every 14-15 months to replace a lousy bulb or buy another television.

Purchased a TV in August that stopped working on January 1. We have been trying to get the TV fixed or replaced for two months. Have been in contact with company a minimum of once a week. After 3 weeks, the company finally told us that they did not have the part available to fix the TV and they would replace under warranty. Two weeks and several calls later, they told us that they would be shipping the replacement TV. On 2/18/08 we were told that the order for the new TV had been placed and it should be with the shipping company by end of week. Today, 2/25, I am being told that they do not have the TV in stock and there is no date for shipment. When customer service has told me they will call me back with a resolution, I never receive the phone call. I have had to continually follow-up with them, and each time am told something different. We have been without a TV for two months and have no indication from Thomson on when they will resolve the situation.
This is the main TV in our home (46 TV). We have had to continue to pay on a cable TV contract that we are not using. We have also been inconvenienced in that we have had to make alternate plans for certain TV events that cost us more money. If the TV is not replaced within the next month, we will have to rent a TV until our replacement one can actually be delivered. While the cost at this point has been minimal, the inconvenience has been great.

I purchased my RCA TV in June, 2007. In Oct. it wouldn't turn on, so I called RCA to see if they could help. They had me try a couple of things with my remote, and it didn't work so they told me I would have to take it to an authorized dealer to get it fixed. So I took the television to the dealer, and after two weeks of waiting I called them and they said they were having a problem with RCA. I called the warranty department and was not successful. I called and was told someone will call me back within 24-48 hrs. After the third time I was so mad they had someone call me back within a half hour. I was then told I should have never taken the television anywhere; I was supposed to send it back to them, and they would replace it for a fee of $85.00. Mind you I only had the TV for 4 months.... I was told it was an out of warranty fee!
If you're going to have a call center, they need to get people who know what they're talking about. I have always had RCA televisions and never had a problem. If this is the way they want to play, I'll take my business elsewhere. FOR ALL OF YOU THAT SAY SAID THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE CONSUMER, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT....

I bought a RCA 32 inch TV two years ago. On February 17, 2008 it started flipping through channels by itself and then switching itself on and off. We tried everything to try and fix the problem. First by unplugging for awhile, but it continued to do the same thing. It doesn't seem to do any good to contact RCA about the problem because they apparently don't care about the customers. I called a repairman to see if it could be fixed and he quoted $135.00 to fix the problem and that he knew what the problem was. So it sounds like this is a common problem with RCA tvs. A very dissatisfied customer.

I bought a 52' Scenium t.v in 2002. In 2006 it shut off and started smoking and there was a bad burning smell. I called RCA and they told me get it fixed, that it wasn't a safety issue. I got it fixed. It did the same thing again in 2007. Called RCA back and they told me I should have called when it was under warranty. I told them I did, They again told me to get it fixed, I told them I wouldn't because of safety issues! They refuse to give me a refund. I have put in a report with a safety complaint and I found out my t.v is not Canadian certified. (I live in can.) I called RCA and told them, they still don't care. I reported them to national safety, lu and I'm going to complain to better business bureau. By law they have to have the t.v Canadian certified if they sell them in Canada. Hopefully someone can do something. If not I will go to small claims court. It has to be manufacturers defect. What upsets me is they won't do anything for their consumers.

I bought a 46-inch RCA TV from Walmart in Dec., 2006. It stopped working in June, 2007. I have talked to several people at RCA; they wanted to make me take the TV in for repairs and said that was my responsibility. I agreed to take it to a repair shop after much arguing with customer service about which shop would be the closest to me. However, one shop was out of business, and the other had the repair man out sick. So I called back. After many conversations with their customer service (who never return your calls but always say they will), I was told they would replace the TV. But guess what? They had none available in the warehouse at this time. I would have to wait another two weeks. So I waited. Called them back in two weeks; they have a TV but not the exact one I purchased. Big surprise again. I asked when would this TV be sent.... Two weeks....
I asked for the manager who I have spoken to throughout this whole ordeal. Jen informed me that the manager would tell me the same thing. But she would have him (Mark ) call me within the hour. No call. I called back and was informed the business was closed for the day. I did contact the BBB. They have sent the complaint to RCA, and I am waiting for response. I have requested a full refund. Hopefully I will receive this and be done with this fiasco. I wish more than anything that I would have read customer reviews before buying this TV. The reviews for RCA are terrible, the reviews on the BBB also list the company as unsatisfactory, and the reviews here are bad as well. I truly hope this company can be dealt with. I thought that RCA was a good, older company that I could trust; I chose them because of this. Boy, was I wrong.

I purchased my husband an RCA Scenium DLP TV in 2004. Upon delivery of the unit, there was a scratch on the screen. Thomson wouldn't do anything about it. I requested the extended warranty, but was told there was none available. In 2006, a shadow started to develop on the screen. I contacted Thomson again and was told that there was nothing that could be done. After several calls to the company, one of the CSR's told me that it was the lamps. I was told that the lamps usually go after 4 years, but in my case it is sooner. With my husband working shifts, and myself working, there is no way that we could have been watching the television as much as they claim. There is a TV in every room in my house with the exception of the bathroom. So I know we did not go over the hours of viewing and this is before 4 years, so what is the problem? I had a magnavox (PIP) for 20+ years and only spent $150 on repairs. With this television, I will be spending $400 or so replacing the bulbs every 2, 3 or 4 years. It is not worth the aggravation. I will never buy another RCA television. Customer service is uncooperative.
I am now with a television that has to have the bulbs replaced. This is costly to the consumer.

I purchased 2 RCA 20" TVs (20f420t) for my vacation condo. After only using a few weeks, but owning for a few months, one of the TV's screens went blank. I called customer support and was told to fax company my receipt, and they would send a prepaid label to return the TV for exchange. I faxed the receipt and never heard back from RCA. A week passed, so I called RCA. They said they received the receipt but was told that they now want $80 to exchange TV, and I was to pay for shipping. TV only cost $125 at Walmart! I asked to speak to a supervisor. Joe Smith (name he gave me at call service in Philippines), said he would look into problem and call me back in 24 to 48 hours. A week later, after no returned call, I called back to ask what happened. I spoke to another supervisor Pepper (ya right), and she told me there was nothing they could do. I asked them to listen to the original taped conversation between myself and first customer support person. She refused...end of call.
A week later, Joe Smith from RCA, called me back and said there was no corroborating information on the tape, and they weren't going to keep the original promise to repair the TV under warranty. Impossible, because I originally offered to bring the TV to a local dealer, and the first rep said not to because the local dealer would charge me for repair whereas RCA wouldn't. Joe Smith said that the conversation never happened. I gave up with call center. I tried to contact RCA (Thompson) directly in Marietta, GA. They sent my email back with a thank you for contacting us and please write a letter to another address. I give up!
I have now thrown the TV away. Will not buy another RCA or Thompson product again!

I purchased a 61 inch HD DLP RCA TV in April of 2005. From day one it made a loud humming noise. After 2 years the TV quit. It was taken back to the place of purchase for repairs. They called me within two days, said the color wheel was broken, it would be about a $500.00 part, and did I want to go ahead and fix it? The TV cost 3,000.00 so yes, I want it fixed. This was in August of 07; it is now Jan 08 and still no part from RCA. I called RCA and talked with several different people but have gotten nothing but a run around. We purchased a RCA SDTV 36" screen on May 7, 2007. On December 16, 2007, in the middle of a movie the television died and has not come back on since. That's not the bad part. The bad part is, you can't reach anyone at RCA to get repair information; and when you get an auto-response from Thomson (who by the way, did not read the emails because all the responses have been the same no matter what you state) you get auto-reply. We have a year warranty, and it looks like they are going to ignore us until the warranty wears out. After reading thousands of comments and complaints, I'm sure my $400 TV will never be repaired or replaced.
We are out all that money, and now the TV--and with the way this corporation is now, we won't even be able to talk to someone to tell them how disappointed we are with their product. Because this is the second time one of their products has quit working in under a year, we will never purchase any product affiliated with RCA. The consumer should be their number one priority; it's a shame it's not.

This is all about an RCA HD 50 TV (which I bought 2 years ago on 5 Oct. 2005) which has been sitting at Tower TV in Fort Smith, AR for 59 days as of today (23 Dec. 2007). I went through a warranty number, and they gave me a number for Tower TV to call so they could fix the TV. I told Tower TV at the time that according to the manual it could possibly be the lamp but also the color was distorted. They picked up the TV on 26 Oct 2007 and ordered a part through Thomson Consumer Electronic Corp which apparently owns RCA. The part was ordered on 31 October from Clarita, CA but was told that it was back ordered and would be in around 8 November. Part did not arrive at Tower TV until around 15 or 16 November. The part was a color wheel (that is what Tower TV told me). They said it fixed the noise that the TV made but did not fix the main problem.
So on 21 Nov 07 they ordered a light engine from Thomson (which I found out when I called Tower TV). At the time the person I talked to at Tower TV said that RCA has parts built in China. On 27 November I called Thomson Consumer Elect. Corp with the number Tower TV gave me, as they told me that I should call because if they did, it wouldn't do any good. I talked to Michael. He took info and said the information would be sent to the search dept, and they would be in touch with me or Tower TV.
On 17 December Tower TV told me the parts Dept was doing a world search for the part: Light Engine. So on 17 Dec I called Thomson Consumer Elec Corp (800) 448-0329 again and talked to Sidney who told me that the parts dept said they are trying to find a compatible part as RCA (Thomson) has no RCA light engine available. Amazing!
This to me is unbelievable that they have no RCA part available. I just don't know what to do. I have never heard of a repair taking so long. Makes me wonder if I got a LEMON. The consequence is that I have had my TV in the repair shop for 59 days. I don't even know if I am telling this to the right people. HELP.

I bought an RCA 50 TV at sales price from Best Buy 1/27/07. The light engine needed to be replaced by an authorized service company. I have been without my TV since 11/15/07, and it is still not repaired. Thomson/RCA offered finally an exchange, but then I found out they will not exchange for the same quality or model; instead they want me to exchange for a cheaper product because I did not pay their manufacturer sales price. Then I asked for a refund, and they said they do not do refunds. After complaining they agreed to a refund, but then I was told it will be 6-8 weeks to process and receive my money. So not only did I go without during Thanksgiving and my vacation but now they are telling me I am going to go with out during Christmas, maybe even New Years as slow as they actually move. And nothing accommodates for that and the stress of all this. I am losing sleep over this because I am so angry. It isn't fair!
This has caused great stress in my life on a daily basis between all the time I spend on call and contacting this company--to coming home and having to share a smaller TV with another adult--to the pride that has been taken away from me. We purchased a brand new television, 52 HDTV RCA Thomson Brand at an INCREDIBLE steal through a reputable furniture store. Regularly selling for $2200, we walked out of the store for $1399.99 - and were anxiously awaiting it's arrival. The television entered our home on 11/11/05 - and on 12/22/05 I made my first phone call to RCA. We were experiencing a very high-pitched squeal from the unit. It was so loud our dogs would howl and we would get migraines from the frequency, even when it began to get too high for us to hear.
After repeated phone calls, we spoke to Chris number one and had an appointment set up for a repairman to come to our home and see what the problem was. This was 04/17/06 by the time the repairman actually showed up. Three hours after being in our home, wiggling and fiddling with the back cover off and a screwdriver poking around - he replaced the back of the tv, without screwing it on. This would prevent the screeching sound, as the back was too tight, he concluded and admitted RCA uses cheap silicone glue now and that parts will vibrate at a higher heated frequency and there wasn't much to be done. (Hhhhm, I'm not too technical - but BS sort of rings through my head on that one.)
Soon thereafter, a bubble appeared in the screen of the television, where it bows out, the picture is stretched and distorted. The picture automatically began changing itself from stretch to zoom. Our coloring exploded and we couldn't get any normalcy to skin tones at all! The final thing to go on the television was powering up - it would take almost 5 minutes to get a picture. FINALLY RCA sent out a repairman to pick up the television.
We've been waiting for almost 3 weeks to have it repaired and sent back only to hear the following. 1) The part was sent out on June 1, it will take 4 weeks to be delivered and then 2/3 weeks to be repaired - getting us a tv in August. 2) The part has been searched for nationwide and can't be found - therefore we will be receiving a new tv of equal or greater value. 3) They found the part again, and it will be in the shop by June 16, 2006 and we should have the tv back hopefully around the 26th of June.
Now let's add in two more important factors to this story. My husband has very poor visions - and my mother is legally blind and can not see a regualr television. She needs very large pictures to make anything out - my husband's condition is deteriorating into the same situation -so the reason for me buying this model was NOT for status. I don't need it, and don't even care if we have a tv - I did it for him and my Mom. Now, he hasn't been able to enjoy his programs, and with mom coming in a week and half - who knows if she'll be able to enjoy television while visiting. I've never been so disappointed with RCA and have never had such a horrible experience all the way around. From poor customer service, poor communication and a poorly manufactured product - I will do my best to research all affiliations to RCA and Thomson - and COMPLETELY steer clear of purchasing them.

I have previously written in about my RCA tv going out after three months. The service center has had my tv for over a month. They say the module board has gone out. I asked the service center if this was unusual and they said no.He informed me that RCA is not worth buying anymore and everyone should boycott this company. He said that they cannot even get hold of a person to talk to. They have no idea how long it will take for this part to come in as the distributer is out of this part. I have tried on numerous occasions to get hold of a person to talk to about this problem. You cannot get to a person to talk to. I was told that they are getting by with this type of service to the consumer because they are still living on the good reputation that RCA use to have. The service center told me that everyone should report them to the better business bureau and that is what I intend to do.

I purchased a 52 inch RCA television model HD52W59 in December of this year. I turned the tv off and when I returned home the tv would not come on. I had a totally black screen and no sound. I had only had this tv for three months. I went back to Circuit City where I purchased the set and was told that they wouldn't do anything as it had been over 30 days.
I then discovered just how hard it is to find a RCA person to talk to. You can't find a number to call to complain to either.I finally found a place that says they will work on it and they have had the set for two weeks and they haven't even looked at it yet. They also informed me that if it needed a part they would have to order it and they didn;t know how long that might take. Keep in mind this tv was three months old.I would like to suggest to everyone reading this to boycott RCA. They obviously do not have the same reputation they use to and they really don't care that they are putting out a inferior product.
I have been told that they are no longer a USA company and that they are French owned now.I wish I had been informed of this before I shelled out my money to a company that could care less that this tv lasted three months.
