I had people that had told me what a great place 24 Hour Fitness was and at the time I was living close to the gym. A new branch had opened recently so I checked it out and worked on getting in shape. They offered individual plans to help me get fit in the areas I wanted and the equipment I wanted to use was very accessible. Most of the staff was very encouraging. However, I felt I was pressured to sign a contract and also some of the staff were a little overzealous. I also felt a little intimidated by some of the other people working out.

24 Hour Fitness was very clean. They had all the machines and resources I needed to workout and get in shape. The staff was very helpful, courteous, and polite. I work late hours so 24-hour access was very beneficial. It fits my lifestyle well. This gym has met my expectations. There was help available even late at night and early mornings. They have excellent pricing and payment options. Other gyms do not offer flexible hours or staff.

I like the hours they're open, their layout and how clean it is. I like the gym equipment they have to use, they have a clean pool and have exercise classes that I enjoy. They also have friendly, kind and helpful staff who are open to answering questions and really want to see you reach your goals. I like the atmosphere. But if I could improve anything, it would be to offer even more types of exercise classes than they already do. It would also be nice if they had a simpler process for people who are interested in joining the gym. They should just allow them to try the gym out without talking about the goals, take their measurements, etc. Also, it would be nice if they had a policy like Planet Fitness where it's a gym for anyone no matter what kind of shape you're in or how you look. But overall, this gym has met my expectations. I have tried many of gyms and seem to keep coming back to 24 Hour Fitness.

24 Hour Fitness has basketball court, swimming pool and parking lot so you won't need to have to find parking when you go. I also like the place because it got a lot of different machine to work with. However, when there's a lot of people it get very smelly. Most of the time when you go on the weekdays there's a lot of people at night and when there is a lot of people you have to wait for the machine you want to work on. But I like 24/7 fitness because it's open 24/7 and I can go anytime you want. It also got a lot of store near me. So far, it met my expectation. I have gained muscle that I need in couple month that I need to gain.

My husband and I signed up via my senior citizen parents who were told that all fees were waived and ALL we would have to do is pay the first and last month's dues, plus we could cancel at any time. Sounds great, sure! Just received bills for the "annual fee" of $100. I tried to complain saying that we were never advised of this fee and all they said was 'you signed the contract and you should have read the entire thing". I understand I need to read what I'm paying for, but the bottom line is that no one ever said anything about an annual fee. They waive the initiation fee but don't even mention the annual fee which is billed months later to trick you.

It was the closest gym my house and I didn't want to have to go out of my way to go work out. This gym is pretty okay and allows me to work up a sweat. I also enjoy this gym because the staff there are pretty friendly and there is not too many people there where I would feel claustrophobic and for me to enjoy my workout and not have to worry about other people disturbing me. But the gym can be improved. I really enjoy the sauna room and I also like that there is television there too. I like the pool but there could be more equipment and the bathroom there could be cleaner as well. The gym would also work better if there were more variety of machines that enable people different types of workout.

The gym had equipment I couldn't afford to purchase myself and I was able to use equipment that I didn't have room for in my home. They had a very nice get you in the door offer. However, it would be very busy from 5 pm to 8 pm making it hard to use some of the equipment. There were several times they had one or more items down and I don't think they had anyone on site to fix them. The gym was very close to my home and this made it very easy to go. Most days we would walk there and back. The walk home was a very nice cool down, and it gave my wife and I time to talk.

It’s in a small town, so the place is not very crowded on most days and I have gotten to know most of the staff and the people that work out there. So it feels like another home to me in which makes it a lot easier to exercise there and work out without fear or being stared at. The main problem I have with this gym is that and I am not sure if it is because it is a small gym in a small town, but quite often a treadmill or other device will not work and it takes them a long time to finally fix it. And the problem really shows is the few times it does get crowded there it becomes a waiting game to use a machine and it has become problematic on a few occasions. But it has met my expectations, and I like the homey feel it provides and it is very friendly and easy to get to. The price is just right for all my needs and even if some of the machines are not working, I would not trade this gym for anything else.

The local gym has super friendly staff that are also funny and very helpful. They have a great selection of snacks, drinks, and supplements to have a great workout and they have clean machines and environment. The local gym is tiny in size compared to others and because of that they don't have enough equipment and sometimes I have to wait to use equipment depending on the time of day. I also wish they had more classes and convenient times. But this gym was the closest to me. I could walk there from my house and get a warm up in. I still wish they had more locations since I'm planning on moving soon and there isn't one close by. But for the price I pay, it exceeds my expectations. I pay next to nothing per year and I love it.

I like that its open at anytime, so it fits into your schedule very well, plus you can meet a wide variety of people there. Also it happens to have a wide variety of exercise equipment to use, which helps in the process of exercising. If there was one thing that I kind of didn't like would probably be the dressing or shower areas. They need to be a little more private than are, or at least in some areas, for the people that are a little more shy about those kind of things. But I do believe that the gym has met my expectations. The other gyms or at least the majority of them aren't open 24 hours, that really makes a big difference. Some people don't have 9 to 5 jobs so it makes it harder to go to a gym and get the kind of work out you want or need.

Another reason 24 hour fitness is great is because it has many different types of machines and weights for you to be able to use. I chose 24 Hour Fitness based on location and reputation. One huge factor in my decision was I like to go out of state at least twice a year, and with the membership it is easy to go find a gym in the city I am visiting and not interrupt my workout schedule while I'm on vacation. I chose it too because my brother and all of my friends that go to the gym go to 24 Hour Fitness as well.

This gym exceeds expectations. It’s convenient because I can go workout early mornings when there's less people at the gym and all machines I want to use are readily available when I want to use them. This gym has an educated and helpful staff which is important to me. This gym also has all the machines I like to use so I can complete every part of my workout while there and don't have to do anything at home. I have no complaints about 24 Hour Fitness. But if I was forced to choose something, I would say the price. Given the quality of the gym the price is ok, but for consistent members, maybe have an annual drop of price for membership. Other than that, there isn't anything I dislike about 24 Hour Fitness.

I don't like that the cardio machines are so close to each other. You can smell people's sweat and it is distracting plus I don't want people smelling me. I realize there isn't a lot of room but just moving them 3 ft apart would help. I chose this gym because it was close to me and they accepted silver sneakers. My goal initially for joining 24 Hour Fitness was to lose 7% body fat and be 35 pounds less than my initial weight when I started at the gym. I now have reached 9% body fat and weigh thirty pounds less than when I started. I am so thankful for the experience that I was provided with. I like the hours of operation as well as the particular classes that are available for members. I love that I am able to come to the gym at 11 at night and be able to freely go about my workout. On the other hand I love that I have the option to either take an aerobics class or bicycling class if I am not in the mood for cardio. Variety is key to working out. But they could improve customer service and the quality of the gym overall. I find that many of the cardio machines that I use on any particular visit can likely have a malfunction or not be able to start a workout. As a result I spend more time finding machines rather than staying on a single one for my workout.

They are very family-friendly, as I have a young child, and enjoy all of the amazing, specific equipment available to me. I am a runner, however, they offer pools in some locations as well as other great amenities. I've always been very pleased with them, their customer service, as well as their locker rooms and staff. However, some locations need to update their equipment. I travel somewhat frequently, and am fortunate enough to have used many of their facilities. The lower-end membership facilities need an upgrade on their equipment. Despite the lower membership costs of these facilities as well as the fact that certain exclusive features are not available to them, they need updated, working, and reliable treadmill, machines, and other equipment.

I really loved Gold's Gym as well, but the price point was better for me at 24 Hour Fitness, although I do have a Grandfathered plan. Also, I enjoyed the classes very much. Gold's Gym had great trainers, but in the area I was located, I enjoyed my experience far more with 24 Hour Fitness. The pool was awesome as well. 24 Hour Fitness met my expectations while I was exercising with her. But after I started going by myself earlier in the day it no longer met my expectations of being open and accepting to all who were working on themselves. It was intimidating and shaming. Also, the gym is very casual and not full of itself. It is very simple and approachable. I didn't want to enter into a gym "community". Other gyms are over the top and it can scare off someone new or casual. Also it was very, very close to where I lived at the time but perhaps the lack of locations they offer is a sort of bummer. I work late so I have to get my workout while the world sleeps. 24 hr fitness is perfect for me. Not only does it meet my expectations as far as the equipment goes, but it's also the only gym open at 2 a.m. Also, the gym is practically deserted at the time I start clanging and banging and the main equipment I use is always not being used. However, I dislike that my gym does not have a juice bar for my post workout fuel. They need to sell at least some kind of thirst beverage.

I love the positive atmosphere, the friendly people and the environment. They have a personal trainer to help one day a week and they have unlimited tanning & aqua massages. However, they need more employees on duty to assist members. Also need more tanning beds, aqua massage beds and more one-on-one time with personal trainers to help with personal growth.

24 Hour Fitness is available worldwide and there are many locations. They are almost always open and have a decent array of equipments and good membership programs available for members. Exercise equipments are pretty complete. The cost of membership for early adopters is really low, and even for new member it's not bad if you take advantage of it during their promotions. Their facilities are generally pretty modern and the parking lots are clean and kept in pretty good conditions. In general I feel safe and pretty good about most of their gyms. It would be nice to add additional workouts such as rock climbing to the gym. Other things such as a basketball gym and racketball courts would be a good addition. Perhaps they can have more of an outdoor addition to their gyms to make it more attractive to members and potential members.

24 Hour Fitness has lots of equipment so you can do a variety of differing exercises which I like since I like to do many different exercises in one workout so I can get my whole body in shape rather than just one muscle group. However, it's not clean and it's stinky not only in the gym area but also in the locker area so it can be unpleasant to workout here but I think it's because there's not enough people cleaning as regularly and there's lots of body odor. I like that it's in a good location and has machines and classes that I want with a diverse choice range and I can overlook its cons. I also like that it is fairly affordable so I can stay in shape on a budget.

I just don't like the germs and the smell of the women's lockers room. I also am hoping and I know that every time someone works out you can't go around with gem wipes and wiping all the equipment off of germs. I enjoy the fact that it's opened 24 hours. My gym has one of the best treadmills, very clean and all equipment is very easy to use. Water is supplied daily and the temp is always perfect. They could improve on a number of towels they supply and the showers and lockers could be updated. A larger daycare would be very nice for those with small children. But all in all, it's still great for the price. This gym has everything I need and so much more. I don't think I would want to go anywhere else.

But honestly if there were other gyms closer to home I would probably use one of the others. Price is a big deal to me and 50 bucks a month is way too much for what I'm getting.

After an initial lump sum payment, I was charged a $30 a year maintenance fee for access to any gym nationwide. They sold out to Bally's Fitness and most recently to 24 Hour Fitness. Over the years they raised my renewal fee to $60 a year and reduced my options to one club which does not operate 24 hours a day as their other clubs do. They claim that I did not renew and that they sent me 1 letter. Meanwhile, I was attending the club 3-4 times during that time period and no one ever said anything to me. So they cancelled my membership and refuse to let me reinstate it. Meanwhile, the membership that I bought my wife is still working and they were renewed and paid together all along. TOTAL SCAM! I felt the need to express my frustrations. I'm one to be open with businesses and some of their practices but what I had to see in this particular place was horrid. To start things off, I signed up for a free three-day pass simply to test the waters as I needed an outlet for my everyday stresses from school. I come over the next day and inform the associate that I had a three-day pass. For some reason they still had me sign in but I did as they said paying no mind to it. I was given an "obligatory" tour of the entire gym by a salesperson. It all looked very promising and he constantly talked about how their machines were top notch and state of the art where they were designed to reduce strain and injuries.

After the tour, I was herded to an area in the corner of the gym where the computers were located. The man gave me a rundown of their four foundations and what they believe each member could do to maintain a healthy life and optimal gym experience. It was all pretty and interesting as I've never heard of such thing in a gym. Of course the fascination took a nosedive as I saw the prices. The salesperson didn't even ask if I wanted to sign up for the membership, he just straight up pointed at the list and said which one looked most pleasing and begun signing me up for it. When he asked for my card, that's when I put my foot down. I told him that I had no such money and that I would not be able to pay for such a thing that evening. He tried to reel me back in, saying it was a sale ending just on that night. Very, very odd for such a specific sale. After declining, he rang up another worker and he swung by to ask what the problem was.

After retelling the little time me and the salesperson had, the other salesperson said he'd do me a favor and let me pay simply $20 to kickstart the membership. If I did not like how it was going, I would be free to cancel and get my money back. Hmm, nice but I had no interest in signing up. After several more attempts of enticing me, I told them I had to make a phone call to see if anyone could lend me money. This was simply a ruse to gain some space and talk to a friend of mine who knew about these things. They attempted to keep me indoors by saying reception was horrid, the only thing horrid was that lie because I had good reception. While I was talking to my friend, the salesperson was eyeballing me to make sure I don't get away. After "making the call", I told them I had no way to pay even $20 to start it. I made it clear that I simply wanted to try the gym for three days.

After this, they've sent yet another person, most likely the manager. He seemed to try to look as sincere as possible and ask me "kindly" if there was absolutely anything he can do to help me sign up. After multiple times, I said I cannot pay for it. He then parrots the deal I was told about countless times like he didn't hear me, and I told him again. He proceeded to ask if I did not have absolutely no means of paying "just $20" and I said no. He responded with "That is a shame". Quickly adding, "that we couldn't help you save on our membership". Yeah, I saw you cover up your subtle comment there buddy. After leaving me and the original salesperson, he said that I should write up 10 people just so I can bring them in with free VIP guest passes. I have too much respect for my friends and family to let these scumbags harass them too so I brought up my phone and started adding "numbers" from my contacts.

As I did that, the guy was trying to warm up to me and ask about my college life and what I draw, saying I was pretty talented; flattery won't charge these batteries. The salesperson was trying to be slick and casually walked behind me to see what I was doing on my phone. Talk about an invasion of privacy. The best part about all this? He handed me my guest pass after ALL that mess. I went through THREE people attempting to coax me into signing up into what seems like the equivalent of the devil's contract. They were attempting to sign me up with a contract and everything before letting me even try the gym. I took the paper and left, ripping it instantly when I got out.

These people should be ashamed of how they treat their potential customers. I see a lot of one-star reviews for this business and I say they deserve it. For the love of everything good, please do yourself a favor and find anything other than 24 Hours Fitness. They're just going to try and suck the money right out of your bank accounts like leeches.

I recently joined 24 Hour Fitness on Market St, San Francisco, a month to be exact. Last week as I attended my 2nd cycle class, I was approached by an employee who asked if I had my token for the class. I proceeded with "What are you talking about?" She then advised, that for me to attend any fitness class I actually need to be signed in and collect a token from the front desk. I advised her that I was told of no such thing when I signed up. I also added that I have attended this class before with no required token. She then proceeded to tell me that as I had no token I had no other options but to leave the class. At this point I was quite upset and confused as the class had just started and the music was blaring.

So I walked out and proceeded to the front desk and asked to speak to the manager on duty, ended up speaking to the operations manager who had no concern for what had occurred as she was adhering to club policy, even after I had advised her that no such information was relayed to me upon my signing up for the club membership. I also mentioned that I had specifically asked for information on group classes and timing of these such classes. The only thing I was given was the class schedule which does not state any information on needing a token to participate in classes.

Let me be clear - that such a policy exists does not bother me. What was really disappointing however was the manner in which I was ejected from what was the second class I attempted to join. Despite having explained my genuine surprise to the staff when first approached for a token, and being visibly upset after being told I had to leave, no courtesy was extended to allow me to participate in that instance. I refuse to associate with organizations who have no courtesy nor are willing to empathize with individual situations and just treat you as a number.

So much so that people have been taking the kickboards from the swimmers' stash to sit on so they don't have to sit on the tiles (bad huh?). The pool doesn't get cleaned daily so band aides are on the bottom along with rocks, sand, and other things.

Don't you have to vacuum a pool once a night? I did when we had one growing up and my family was the only people using it. The management is lazy, unaffected by customer complaints. As he literally watched me walk to the wall where my phone was charging, he proceeded to take the opportunity to try and steal my stuff by nonchalantly sweeping it into a broom basket as if I wouldn't notice his action. When I demanded him to give me my stuff, which he tried to say asked me if it was mine which was a lie because he never approached me and asked me anything of the sort and furthermore he had his headphones on so even if he asked from afar he may not have heard me.

Furthermore he tried to get me into a scuff because he knowing the police were on their way and they would side with him because he's an employee and I am viewed as a so called ** man or second class citizen which I am not. Anyhow he stopped getting physical with me once he seen the police and when they arrived on the scene of course he denied everything and the police proceeded to question me and also mistreat me as if I was trespassing. I've been a long term member of 24-Hour Fitness to facilitate self maintained physical therapy. This was an all clubs membership allowing me to go to any club in the US. My annual dues were $24 per year after the initial investment, which is fantastic. I've been paying my dues every year for several decades. This year I send off my annual dues like normal. After that there was no contact so I assumed everything was normal. It had been several months since I had been able to attend the gym during the winter because of a harsh winter and being snowed in.

When I went to the gym early this year I was told my account had been closed and I was no longer a member. They went further to say that the reason was nonpayment. I said I'd made my payment months ago, but their records show no payment. I checked my records and traced the check number and it had indeed not been cashed. That piece of mail seems to have disappeared altogether as it was never returned to my address.

I complained that my lifetime membership being canceled without any notice that there was anything wrong with the account. The club manager told me there was nothing she could do and that I'd have to contact corporate, which I did. Corporate told me to contact the manager of the 24-Hour club and submit my payment record, because it was up to her. So I make the rather long journey back to town again and submit my records of payment and check number. I also told them that the specific check had not been processed through my bank. The manager still says "It's not up to her, it's up to corporate."

While calling corporate the gentleman politely offered to sell me another lifetime membership. I asked him if he had any idea how insulting it was to offer to sell me another membership at this time. I submitted my record of payment to the gym manager who said she had nothing to do with it and that was corporate's responsibility. I eventually explained to her that corporate said I was supposed to submit my record of payment to her, the manager, who was supposed to update my account record and possibly corporate would consider it and might reinstate my account. Finally she agreed and apparently made a copy of my payment record. When I left the manager told me she'd contact me and let me know what corporate decided. It's been over a month and there has been no contact whatsoever.

This type of membership cancellation seems to be common, particularly for long term older members. It's my opinion that 24-Hour Fitness took my $24 annual payment and put it in the "round file" so they could use nonpayment as an excuse to cancel the membership of a no longer profitable account that has an all clubs membership. Corporate and the club managers both deny responsibility. I claim breach of contract and unfair billing procedures.

Company has increased monthly access fee for my $29.99 lifetime membership without my authorization. For 3 consecutive years has avoided sending bills or even notifications to my email and mail addresses. They cancelled my account once and converted it to a month to month plan with the excuse that I did not pay my bill on time. I had to go in person to fix this but instead Rep switched me to the month to month plan. Called several times to customer care to get this fixed but now they have increased my monthly access fee. 24 hour customer service says is a $50 maintenance fee.

I asked to send copies of bills by email or mail but they refused saying they are unable to do that due to their system generating the notification only once. This company has became so awful. Their customer services is filled by liars and misleading reps. Even supervisors they don't have answers why they are not sending bills. All they give are excuses and more lies. This all started 4 years ago since I froze my account due to an injury.

Following the terms of the contract, I mailed a letter within the 3 day window to the Carlsbad address with all of the required information per the contract terms and assumed my money would be reimbursed. After realizing it wasn't, I talked to the club manager in person to seek a refund. He told me to call a main customer number. The main number told me the gym was authorized to provide a refund. I called the gym again to relay this. The manager is now avoiding my calls after telling me last week he would talk to his general manager and touch base yesterday. Yesterday he was "on his break" and then "in a meeting" and he never called me back. As I said to him, I followed the terms of the contract. This is a breach on the gym's part and very poor customer service.

I called them with a simple request: We are moving out of US. Please cancel our membership. Faiza at 24 Hour Fitness (Fremont, CA) said they could not do this over the phone because their policy requires members to physically visit them for membership cancellations. I checked their website. Their policy includes this text: "Upon your request to cancel, future monthly payments will be stopped and your last month's prepaid dues will be applied. Notice must be provided in writing, over the phone, or in person at a Club." That makes one feel that they were not only violating their own policy by rejecting my request for cancellation of membership over the phone, they were making it needlessly harder for me.

I called their corporate services and the cancellation was done in 5 minutes. I asked why their local representative (Faiza) was unable to achieve this cancellation. I was told, "She certainly could have, no reason that prevented her from doing so. We will look into the matter. Could you describe your experience as accurately as possible?" So I answered their follow-up questions. Then I called Faiza again to inform that the cancellation was done and that this could have been a lot more easier for the both of us. This was a disappointing experience.

WELL we just found out that 24 Hour Fitness sold out to LA Fitness in the state of Arizona and the only way I found this out is driving by the old 24 Hour location on Bell Road and seeing the LA Fitness sign on the building. So I stopped by and asked the gentlemen at the counter "when did 24 Hour convert to LA Fitness?" Response..."a couple of months ago". I asked "weren't the current members allowed to transfer over to LA Fitness?" He said "yes but we can't take anymore transfers and you will need to contact 24 Hour Fitness to see what they can do for you."

Contacted 24 Hour Fitness Corporate Office and was told "you're too late to transfer over to LA Fitness. We sent notices to all our members that there was a time frame to transfer over." I said "I never received notification via email or post office mail." He said "there's nothing we can do for you." I said "I have been a loyal customer since July 1984 = 32 years. On Tuesday, I have decided to join a different gym where my friend frequent, so I actually called them up and told them I wanted to cancel, a different person got on the phone and told me that I had to cancel within 3 days. I told them that one of the manager told me otherwise, he didn't care what I said. I am a loyal member since 1990, paying my membership on time every month using a direct withdraw from my bank account. This is because I had locked in a good deal back in 1997. My dues were $12 a month when I joined. Great deal. They did not have all the fancy clubs. Mine was small however I was able to use other without any increase. Now one of the clubs I used to go to I can no longer go due to it being upgraded. However, they now keep building bigger clubs and renaming them then expect you to increase your dues to keep going to the new clubs. Their excuse was it is to cover the additional costs and they have pools, racquetball and basketball which I did not use nor can no use at all due to hip replacements and spinal surgery.

I explained that I feel the new member should be paying the increased costs. They said they were but I too should pay the additional costs. I asked how is it my fault as a consumer to pay for additional costs every time they build a new club or change the name that I did not ask for or my opinion on. They said it is their policy and there are no exceptions. I informed them I also belong to Fitness 19 and travel across the US from Ca to PA and was able to use their club at no additional costs. They could care less about how they treat their loyal members. It’s all about the money to them. I travel and like to work out from time to time. I was in San Diego and wanted to use their club and they told me it would cost $25 for a one day pass. I feel they need to readdress their policies and grandfather long term members in as they are not getting any younger and let the new member offset the additional costs.

I did not ask for them to build bigger clubs so I could pay more. This is just unfair and I believe and would recommend all consumers to look at all your club options before joining here. They also told me I would need to increase my due again if I want to go to an all sports or super sports club. It is all about the money not customer satisfaction. You are just a number not a member. 24 Hour Fitness has "NO" customer loyalty. Just take your money and keep on going. I have spoken to them and written to them with no response to my written appeal. I will end by saying the club in Redlands CA maintains their equipment well and the staff is friendly and professional.

About a year ago, 24 hour created a tv channel for their advertisement, they play this channel so loud and the point is that they put the voice control switch in the manager's office. It means when the manager is not available all members have to deal with the loud music.

Criminal Assault & Aiding & Abetting & stealing from me. The police made clear that wasn't the case since this was criminal and included an assault as I made clear after Eric allowed the assailant to flee while I stopped into Trader Joe's (letting the front desk man know I'd be back within 5 minutes and I'd keep an eye out). So Eric has her flee the scene as I've already reported Robert, your other manager that he was enabling the assault and kept claiming it was accident; shouting it at me after she clearly admitted to doing it and not being an accident as she is clearly entitled to sit on me to get to her one jet and how I was using the entire 12 person capacity empty jacuzzi and responded to Robert that what she was saying was psychotic as to justify it and what he was doing was clearly enabling criminal behavior by excusing it saying it was an accident where I clearly called him out.

And then he told me I had to leave and said I had to make a police report and that he was aiding and abetting an assailant which Eric also did while I went to Trader Joe's. And looking back on it should have and had the right to place her under private person's arrest as well as Robert and Eric. So the officer made clear to him as I made clear that I'm in my legal right to knock a person's teeth out if they are to target approach and assault and that Eric wanted me to come for 30 days. And I made clear what he was doing and Robert was enabling criminal behavior and that they in fact are in violation of the contract by enabling criminal assault and according to the police, battery and made clear they don't provide a safe nor adequate environment where I can simply heal.

You're in violation of your contract. I was refused to even go back in and get my Trader Joe's food, $12 out the window. Thank you for that and you now have a libel suit coming at your butt in waves. And let Eric and Robert know about California penal code C 135 (et al.) spoliation of evidence as to not get rid of the tapes that clearly taped all this unequivocally going on. And now you want to hold my money hostage after I'm injured and assaulted again in your jacuzzi as I brought it up a couple of other times. And now you want to what, steal from me after not accepting any responsibility.

I got my bet on 14 jurors that say otherwise as well as your obvious criminal and pattern of gross neglect misconduct and aiding and abetting criminals. I also followed up and have the call recorded with Robert as to say "no you can no longer come in the club; your account is not active." I made sure of that. I also told both officers I advised of ca PC 135 both Eric mgr and Robert ** asst mgr (or however your hierarchy works). Oh and where is my check; why a check as capital one 360 acct was set up and I paid in cash? R/d.

When I called today (10/20/2016), I was told by the customer service rep that I had "agreed" to the monthly charge, to which I explained to her that was FALSE.

I had been told that the "freeze" to the account was "free". I explained to the customer service rep that I remember telling the cancellation rep back in June that the reason for my cancellation was because I had NO TIME to train anymore, the cancellation rep convinced me to "freeze" the account instead of cancelling it so if in the future if I wanted to reopen the account I would not get hit with the initiation fees!!! The customer service rep kept telling me that an "email" had been sent to me warning me of the charge, that is FALSE. This is their main reason for making it seem like your fault, you "did not check your mail". I was not given a refund at all, was told to file a complaint with my bank (I will do that).

You have been warned, if you ever want to CANCEL your account with 24 Hour Fitness, DO SO. Don't let them convince you of "freezing" the account with false claims of "freezing" the account for "free"!!! But what really made me mad was the fact that the associate/manager did not do something very basic. My boyfriend and I went to the gym in person the day before our vacation to put our membership on hold for a month, while we were going to be out of the country. The associate said that she was not a manager and could not do it. However, she gave us a pen and paper to write down the dates we needed the hold and she would ensure that a manager put a hold for us. Fine with us, so we went on our way after writing the note.

Now, I found out that the manager did NOT put a hold for us. The problem is I have not seen that same female associate at the gym again and have no proof of that conversation occurring. Corporate is also unwilling to credit me with one month even though the call representative acknowledged that she could see I did NOT sign in and use their facilities during that whole month. I don't see why it would be so difficult to credit us with one month of service that we clearly did NOT use. It is about the principle! It's especially ridiculous as this is coming from a huge company. The call rep said "Thank you for being a 24 Hour fitness member". Ummm... no you guys just lost 2 customers. I love the fact that I can hit up a gym any time of the day, but I am not okay with being cheated out of a big chunk of money trying to get healthy. I googled a site, just so I can write a review about their hidden annual fee but I realized a lot of people have jumped the gun before me. But you know what, I was also lied to - that I couldn't use a Costco membership deal because I have been a member already. I learned that that was false. Do you know how much money I lost since then because I didn't use this deal? Ridiculous. The girl just kept apologizing, where can an apology get me.

I want to share my experience with everyone, and make sure that all the members are aware that 24 Hour Fitness may charge you THREE TIMES in one month cycle!!! Please don't get fooled by this greedy company as I was. I think that this company will get out of the business soon if they don't change their company value, and continue to be greedy!!! I called to cancel my membership in Aug. Obviously they didn't want me to cancel, and the representative pursued me to use the gym for the next three months for FREE OF CHARGE. He said that If I make up my mind to cancel I can call them back by Nov. 01 to confirm. I think that the plan sounds fair and I agreed.

I should have listened to my instinct that this company is well known for greediness, e.g. fooling their customers by tricks and charging their customers more than they already promised. (They got sued many times because of that). Not surprised, the company kept charging me the monthly fee because I used the gym once in Sept. I added one of my family members under my account, and she pays by herself using a different credit card. I don't understand how 24 Hour Fitness messed up the system that they sometimes charged her three times in one month, sometimes twice in one month. She called 24 Hour Fitness and her bank, the customer care from 24 Hour Fitness can't do anything but advised her to dispute the charges and she did dispute the extra two charges.

Now the stupid company called me and asked if I am responsible for my family member's payment. I told them that she provided a different credit card, why should I be responsible for that. I added my family member to the conference call. The customer care had no idea what she was talking about and neither she understood the whole situation. She kept saying that their system shows that we didn't pay, so we should pay. My family member said that her bank account shows that she paid the monthly fee and she only disputed the other two extra charges. The customer service said, "well you should fax your bank statement to us." My family member said that "I can give you the transaction date and the reference number for your investigation, why should I send my private bank statement to your company."

The customer care said, "you need to send your bank statement to us. That it is the only way to solve the problem." WOW. In addition, the customer care said that we need to pay an annual fee. We are totally shocked. Nobody told us that there is an annual fee associated with our account when we signed up. Then the customer care said "I can show you our agreement." Really, now you want to show us the 100 pages agreement and there may or may not have a small sentence saying that all the customers may be charged an annual fee without notifying! Why didn't your company disclose that when we signed it up?

Again because of this company is well known for their greediness, confusion and orderless, we shouldn't be surprised that they would use all kinds of tricks to charge their customers more money! I urged all the customers who got fooled by this company to gather together and fight it back to against their unlawful behaviors.

I purchased a monthly membership for my daughter who was home from college for the summer. The cost for a monthly membership was about $40 per month, along with a small initiation fee. Today, I called to cancel the membership because she has returned to school and was informed that I was also charged a $49 Yearly Maintenance Fee - a fee added in 2015 to all yearly memberships to maintain their gyms. I told customer service that I was not aware of the fee and that I did not feel it fair that I was charged a yearly fee for a three month membership. The Escalation Supervisor simply replied, "Sorry about that."

I gather from the other reviews that this is a problem for many other members as well. Obviously, 24 Hour Fitness is neither making this clear, nor willing to do anything about it. I, too, have a problem with this maintenance fee because I am ALWAYS dealing with broken and missing equipment, and when I bring it to the attention of a staff member I am told 'I don't know what to tell you', or 'it happens all the time'. When I ask to speak to the manager, one is not available. Really?

Why are we paying an annual fee??? Consumer Affairs should investigate 24-hour Fitness to see what they are doing with the annual fee they are charging their customers. The customer service rep said it is to up keep the gym but the gym I go to have never been up keep. All the machines are broken.

Years ago I signed up for membership and joined the $49 annually lifetime membership. Last year my renewal notice indicated a doubled annual fee. I questioned it and I was told 24 Hour Fitness is reviewing their memberships and is increasing the fee for everyone. I was also directed to page 3 of the contract. It seems I'm the only one who received the increase but my friends and family stayed on the same rate. Recently, I questioned it again because it's my second year renewing at the increased rate. The same friends and family are still paying $49 annually. Again the Customer Service representative directed my question to Finance and again, the Finance representative doesn't have an answer. The excuse is the Corporate reviews memberships and increase fees accordingly. Really? A complete lie.

As for the other memberships I referred to, of course I'm told they cannot look and do not know why my friends and family didn't receive any fee increase. The Finance person asked if I wanted to talk to someone from Customer Service who could possibly answer my questions. A waste of time. The 24 Hour Fitness employees bounce customers back and forth to other departments because they do not have any answer. As for the online renewal service, the website kept sending me to the page for membership upgrade. It won't let me just renew my membership. I had to call in my renewal to avoid this other scam from 24 Hour Fitness. Feel free to contact me for any class action lawsuit. I will participate.

Couple years ago, signed up for prepaid membership under the notion that the sales told me after my prepaid period, my annual fee will be grandfathered at $49.00 rate thereon after. This is a verbal agreement. Little did I know, the contract had a fine print that allows 24 Fitness to hike the club fees after a 12 month grace period (of which 0 disclosures were made about this fine-print from 24 Hour Fitness). So recently in 2016, my fees were hiked over 150%. I reread the contract, and have to accept the fact that 24 Hour Fitness blatantly lied about their membership dues, and reserve the right to hike their fees indefinitely. I rated one star because there is no option to rate them 0 stars.

I signed up with 24 H F in 2010, they great deal, new store and they offered a contract price to me $649.36, then next annual payments when due were set at $49.00 per year plus tax. All of a sudden 2015 my rate increase to over 150 per year. That's triple the rate. I went to gym mgt, they sent me to customer service, after a number of "I don't know answers, it's not my decision", then final statement was "it's still very inexpensive" so basically too bad. That's not the point, the contract deal stated the rate with a potential increase of not more than 3%. Once per year. They would not respond to letters, mgt played dumb, customer service was in the end, pointed in too bad attitude. Private company, no real sr mgt to contact. Again, NO reply to letters and they increased the rate again this year. Yes, I see a class action suit in the making. Valid complaints.

Attached is contract language: "3(c). Right to Increase dues: If you have a monthly membership, 24 Hour may increase your monthly dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than three percent (3%) of your then current monthly dues. Any such increase will not occur during the first three (3) months of your membership. Your EFT date will not change. If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Initial Annual Renewal Amount on page 1 of this agreement, but may increase all subsequent annual renewal amounts. 24 Hour will send you notice of your new annual renewal amount each year thereafter prior to the end of your then current term."

I initially had a super sport membership and the club where I got my membership is at the capitol expressway location in San Jose, CA. My schedule changed so I was unable to go to the super sport clubs so I wanted to downgrade my membership. The other club I've been going to was the McKee and capitol location and for 3-4 weeks I kept asking the front desk if I could talk to a manager. EVERY, SINGLE time the front desk people say "there's no manager, please come back again."

Finally after weeks of asking, I get to talk to a manager and he says he cannot help me and that I have to go to the original location where I got my membership. Thank you other employees, for making me waste my time to wait for a manager who is completely useless. IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE FOR THE MANAGER/EMPLOYEE TO MAKE THE CUSTOMER'S EXPERIENCE HARDER. I think the manager should have at least called the other club to help me.

I go to the original location, Capitol Expressway, and I'm told AGAIN that the manager is busy and that I should come back in an hour. After an hour I go back and STILL the manager is "unavailable" and the front desk people just write down my info on a piece of paper and told me that I would get a call from the manager in 2-3 business days. Seriously, the other employees couldn't write my name on a piece a paper and pass it off to the manager?

3 business days pass by and I still get no phone call. I find out that my debit card was charged AGAIN for the month when I was trying to handle this situation for more than a month. I call the line to cancel my membership and tell the whole story. I finally get my membership cancelled and I was told I was going to get a refund. A week has passed and I still have NO REFUND. I SHOULDN'T BE PAYING EXTRA FOR HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS.

So far I've paid over $300 to go to the gym one time and not because I don't want to go. I'm actually a bit of a workout aficionado. When I went in to 24 Hour Fitness to ask about the gym and costs I made it very clear that I wanted a month to month membership that I could cancel at any point. I was told yes, I could do that. I was told that the only requirement was that I had to give 1 month notice. I was not told about the annual fee. I was rushed through the signing on a little electronic pad. I was told that this was the agreement we already discussed. I figured a big corporation like this would have a fair system in place. I signed. What I saw was very small print. There was nothing bolded.

When I wanted to cancel the gym membership because there aren't 24 Hour Fitness gyms where we are at, we travel for business, I was told it would be something like $400 to cancel. I had to pay the full year. When I asked to be sent the contract there it is with my signature and a big bold statement announcing a year contract. I assure you that bolded, large font statement was not on the electronic pad that I signed. I decided to suffer through and pay the membership for the year. Now I'm suddenly hit with an annual fee. Of course the response is, it is in the contract. I'm not going to go read it, they can add anything into an electronic contract and obviously just wanted to make a sale when they got me to sign this.

I've paid over $300 to go the gym one time. This gym isn't everywhere like they say it is and even if I could go to it regularly I would be wanting to cancel because I didn't know about this year contract or annual fees. She made a huge point of no initial fees. Well yes, an annual fee is pretty much the same thing. I don't care when I have to pay things I just want to know what I actually have to pay. I wish I had checked consumer reports first!!!

So I started my membership back in May. I am 20 years old and not really experienced with contracts and stuff like that. So I go to my mother who is a paralegal and asked her what I should look out for. She advised me to make sure and look out for any annual fees. So I went up to the gym and signed up with a employee. I did not want to do it online, because I wanted to be sure to ask all the questions I need. I asked him how the annual fees work. He told me that I would not be charged an annual fee until a year into my membership, (which made sense to me) no 3 months later I get charged an annual fee. I called my bank and asked them to declined the charges (which they did) but they advised me to "call them and make sure they don't try and charge you again." So I called them and WAITED ON HOLD FOR AT LEAST AN HOUR for anyone to pick up. Someone finally pick up.

I explained them what was going on. She stated that they would not try to bill the annual fee again, but I would still have to pay the monthly fee, but until I paid the annual fee I would be denied access to the gym. So I was like okay no problem. I called my bank back and asked them to cancel out the card. They did and the card that they had on file was no longer good. I thought everything was squared away, when I woke up this morning I had been charged again for the 54.11. I called my bank and asked them what happened. They couldn't explain how the charge still went through. I am PISSED at this point. I have to save money for a new apartment that I am moving into and I cannot afford this!!! I will be calling them and requesting for a refund since the women I spoke with said that they would not try and bill me again. I wish I could give this place less than a star.

MAIN POINT: I've had a membership for 3 months now and I have been charged $234.95 so far. That makes this place $78.31 a month. So the first time I went to the club I had just gotten off working at the ranch and desperately needed to shower. (I don't know if you guys have ever handled goats and tractors all day in the heat, but it leaves you feeling RIPE, especially when you walk into a 'meat market' like a gym, as a woman, wearing ** covered steel toe boots). I wanted to use the free pass and try it out. I had no intentions of using the machines or basketball court. Simply shower and swim.

I was greeted by a young kid who asked me to sit down and fill out some basic info. That turned into me signing a contract. I was told it would be 19.99 a month, cancel whenever I want, no initiation fee. I was disgustingly dirty, people were staring at me, and I just wanted to bathe. So fine, I'll sign this and let me go. I did tell him I was disappointed he pressured me into getting a membership, since I kept asking about the pass. But 19.99 a month to swim and use a shower, cancel whenever I want to. Not bad, right? So I kept it light and went to see the pool.

Always bring your own towels. Either out or they are very thin and small. Not allowed to leave anything, so bring a lock and bag each time. Really overcrowded, especially between 3 and 6. No parking. Most days I had to park at the Costco and walk up the hill. The pool was busy. Never even tried the sauna. It was so crowded. Steam room was less crowded but these kids come in and spray a bunch of perfumes. Which, if everyone was using the same scent wouldn't be so bad. But it's like wet, sweat, mint, lavender, eucalyptus, and fruit? Just no. I learned from hearing people complain at the steam room that the machines are often broken. Also I guess the childcare is crap? (Those two points are technically hearsay since I didn't experience, just heard multiple people complain.) I made the mistake of filling up my water bottle there once. Don't do it!

The showers are... well they work but I got in the habit of showering again when I got home. Typical gym: Gross men, over chlorinated pool, loud girls. Some of the attendants also had a bad habit of staring in the locker room. The Kicker... So I said 19.99 a month, yeah? Ok. 5/12 I was charged 104.98. I called in and they apologized for the confusion, but there's "never been a deal for no initiation fee". (Check on the website this morning, and it still shows $0 down, FYI). On 6/13 and 7/11 I was charged 39.99. I called in again and said this isn't working. They told me not to cancel and that I could have 3 months with no charges. I was cool with that. Our GSD had some medical expenses come up and I needed that money to help him. Lo and behold found I was charged 49.99 today. The first month I'm not supposed to be charged, and the price went up? The punches keep coming...

So, I call and wait 10 minutes only for some snotty little girl to tell me "Well you signed it." Get the number to cancel it, ON HOLD FOR 35 MINUTES, only to learn that I'm now going to be charged $364.24 to cancel. And that $50 was an annual fee, I "should have known if [I] had read the agreement". Since it's a year contract, (which once again I was under the impression this was a month to month, 19.99, cancel when I want to plan. The kid literally lied out of his teeth to make a sale and just banked on the fact I wasn't reading the fine print), it's cheaper for me to stay and keep paying even though now I don't go. (Landed an at home job and the boyfriend just picked up a second position, so the car is all his now.) I've had a membership for 3 months now and I have been charged $234.95 so far. THAT MAKES IT 78.31 A MONTH.

Regardless of how nice the salesmen are - do not trust them. Once you sign you'll just keep hearing the robotic, "I can only go off the screen". I did the math, and if I don't cancel and go through until May 2017 I'll be charged 279.93. If I cancel it would cost me an additional 84.31. I even asked if we could switch the account into my boyfriend's name, something. I work at home now. He would absolutely love to go to the gym - but not a chance in hell we're both paying dues. Of course they said no, because customer service is a dying art form. Truly, everyone. Save your energy and spend your money at a private gym. There's a nice one only a few miles away which I almost signed up at, but I didn't - because it was $50 a month. If only I had known, huh? =)

I have been attending a senior class every day for the last 14 months. Most people in the class are over 65 and are on Medicare. When you receive Medicare, you get free membership to the gym... I guess the gym gets paid by the government. The other day, the instructor brought in someone from management who lectured us on how no one is allowed to talk about anything having to do with politics even if you're not on any side or even just whispering to a friend... no talking period and if we do, our membership will be revoked. She claimed that "people are leaving the class due to politics". But this is not true. No one has complained and certainly no one has been upset at all let alone wanting to leave.

We've all become friends and enjoy socializing before class. I believe the instructor overheard a couple of people talking and SHE didn't like what they said so she went to management and made up a lie about people wanting in quit the class. This may sound trivial, but the 35 of us were quite shocked and insulted by this "scolding" and then the threat of losing our membership. We have no right to speak to friends? I feel too uncomfortable now to go back and a lot of us feel that way. This particular gym has not been receptive to any suggestions in the past, they give the run around, tell you to email, then no one gets back to you even to acknowledge your email.

Well as many other complaints my complaint is with the cancellation and the lack of customer service. First I attended the LA county fair on September 2015 were a 24 hr employee had a booth set up to get people to sign up. I see a large sign that say "No Annual Contract" so I walk over to take a look. The man was very persistent and seem to be being honest so I agree to sign up on a month to month basis walking away with nothing but a business card and no copies of any papers I signed thinking I just got a great deal and was so excited to be able to afford a gym on my minimal budget. Fast forward to the next day I go in to use my new membership as I walk in I see a sign "were moving." Okay great - it's down the street still close enough to attend without using too much gas. I was okay with that.

During the first month I freezed my account due to a medical issue, they told me "ok just call back when you want to unfreeze." Great. December I was given the go ahead to go attend the gym. Then fast forward to January the old gym is no longer there and the new one open. Awesome I was excited to check the new one out. Well as I walk in I go to go check in and my sign in couldn't be completed. I ask why, they said "well you don't have access to this club." I was like "well I signed up for this club but was at the old location." The lady then proceeded to tell me that I would have to drive to a club located 4 cities away from me if I wanted access, I would have to upgrade.

I then called in to talk about the issues. They were no help so I said "okay then let's just cancel since I'm not under contract." The employee then tells me "you are under contract. A 12 month contract. If you want to cancel you will need to pay the remaining balance." Thinking, If I did that I would have paid it off early and still be able to attend without the worry of a contract. WRONG - they wanted me to pay the entire balance and I would not have access to the gym either way. So I hung up.

Now July 2016 thinking my contract will be up soon I wanna know what is the process of having my membership cancelled. The lady on the phone then tells me "oh your membership isn't up until April 2017!"! I was in shock like how can they extend my contract without letting me know. They then said "oh it's your freeze that caused this." So I asked to speak to a manager, after waiting about 20 mins for one to get one on the phone. As I began to tell him all of the issues I'm having he laughs and he says "That's why you should read before signing anything" which is true but I signed with good faith in the company not screwing me over. Well they did and now I'm stuck. He then tells me "Well since you're stuck for now just go use it since you're going to be responsible for it anyways." I'm furious with this company and the lack of compassion and understanding they have for people. I will not recommend anyone to sign up with this money hungry company.

When I finished my workout, I went to pick up my children and saw the Kid's Club attendant faces were distraught. When I looked at my 2 year old baby girl, I saw why. She had scratches all over her face and neck. When I asked what happened, I was told another child attacked mine and scratched her. Although I was upset, that is not the part that is disturbing as I do understand kids can get a little rough when they are around other kids. I was told that this particular child ALWAYS has issues interacting with other kids to the point where the child had to be suspended. After hearing that, I had questions as to what is the protocols in place to handle such children that maybe should not be allowed in the Kid's Club. I was concerned, not only for my own children, but for the safety of other children patronizing the Kid's Club.

So the following day, I called the club manager, Mr. **, to try to get some answers and determine whether the measures they were taking were appropriate and if I could feel comfortable sending my children back there. The only thing he could tell me was "we are handling it". That answer did not satisfy me so I requested to be contacted by someone in the Corporate Office who could give me some specifics as to what is done in a situation like this. I have been waiting a week for a call back from Corporate. I have called the club manager back multiple times and he is blatantly avoiding me. I have been left no other choice than to pursue the matter with the Wayne, NJ Police Department. MY 2 YEAR OLD BABY WAS ATTACKED AND NO ONE AT 24 HOUR FITNESS WANTS TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION!!!

I, like so many other members out there, received a price increase from $29 to $79 annually. I was promised that the $29/annually price is forever. I had been happily paying my dues on time since 2006. This past November 2015, I was informed that my dues are now increased to $79 and on short notice. The same thing happened to me at Fitness USA in 2004, but since I didn't go to that gym very often, I just let the membership expire.

There seems to be a trend where gyms used to sell memberships with either upfront bulk pay, or locked in contract for a set amount of years, with the promise of a low lifetime flat rate. Now that the economy is less stable, they are trying to recuperate money by increasing dues from their existing members. There's nothing wrong with that, but they should not touch the existing members that paid for the "Lifetime Guaranteed" price. That promise was why I joined 24 Hour Fitness. I even brought in several friends at the time to share the promotional deal. We were all told verbally that the guaranteed price was for the rest of our lives or until the business closes down. I feel cheated and all I am asking is for 24 Hour Fitness to honor their promises. I am otherwise still happy with the gym.

I contacted 24 Hour to cancel my membership, as I had not been to the gym in months and decided to cancel. When I called their customer service line, I was told that I had a yearly membership and could not break contract. I pride myself in not getting caught in these types of commitments. However, I asked if they could switch the payment date instead, since I was supposedly locked in a contract. I was then told, I would still be billed on the date that I subscribed for and that it would take a month before the changes could go into effect. So I asked if I could put the membership on hold for one month so when it billed me again, it would be set on my desired billing date. I was ensured that I would not be billed again until that date, and this was a good way to handle it, since I couldn't afford to be billed at the beginning of the month.

Not only was I charged for a new yearly fee on the wrong date, they then billed me two weeks later for a monthly fee. When I called about this, I was told me that I couldn't be refunded for the yearly fee even though the membership was on hold for only a month, but that it started a whole new year membership. Then I asked why I couldn't be credited for the unused months of service. Now, my yearly membership has been started over, and all I want is out. If you ask me, they are making tons of money from folks who don't go to the gym, but keep paying thinking that this will be the year to fulfill their new years resolutions. I don't think gyms should have yearly membership contracts that lock you in.

I signed up for a membership in May at 24 Hour Fitness at Capital Mall in Olympia, Washington. The staff is militant in its approach towards people. I went to the club last weekend to workout. I had to use the restroom urgently when I arrived. I told the women my situation and without blinking an eye she said - "Sir you have to check in!" I repeated my statement again - and she replied even more terse than before. I pleaded a third time and she raised her voice and loudly said "SIR YOU HAVE TO CHECK IN!" I was about to have an accident at the front desk. I attempted to put my numbers in but I was at the point of jitters from holding it too long and pushed a wrong number - at this point it is imperative I find a toilet! It is now an emergency.

I abandoned trying to re-enter my numbers and went quickly to the locker room to relieve myself. After I was done using the bathroom I went to my wife to show her a text of a picture of a letter my son wrote when he was 10. A gym employee interrupted my conversation with my wife. Touched me on the back! And said "YOU HAVE TO SIGN IN!" His tone was loud and aggressive. I turned around and said "Don't come walking up on me like your a ** cop." (NOTHING against law enforcement - but I have NEVER had anyone approach me like that or touch me - I'm 6'3. 190 lbs- all muscle.) He said "That language is not permitted here. If you don't like it, you can leave." I said "If that's the way this place is I don't want to be a member." He says, with an attitude in his voice "OH yeah! I can take care of that right now !" as though I am greatly concerned about being in this pathetic gym. I said "Good."

He says loudly and aggressively "Come with me!" as though he is an authority figure of some sort - POINTING his finger at me! He says "Come here!" as he pulls a chair and positions it and says "Sit down!" I was completely stunned - this manager is barking orders at me like he is the school principal and I guess I was the one in "big trouble". I looked at the tiny man and said "You don't tell me what to do." And then he approached the front desk and told the attendant to call the police. I realized that he wasn't the confident leader of a health club, but a scared kid trying to make a name for himself. I was amused and amazed.

I went to my car and called customer service from their parking lot. Customer service was outstanding. They listened, understood my position (all I needed was a restroom for 3 minutes), they gave me a free month and referred my issue to the operations manager Phoebe. The operations manager called me on Monday and wanted to discuss the matter via phone. I informed her that my desire was to speak in person. (I wanted her to see what type of person I was - a polite, courteous and respectful person intent on correcting the situation.)

She agreed to discuss in person so I went to the club with a copy of my urology appointment so the club would MAYBE realize I had an actual condition that required the use of a restroom and I also asked that she copy it and also brought 3 copies of a request for the video footage of the incident. She received and copied all of the documents. I then told her my story and her immediate reply was "You entered the club without checking in and tried to work out." No pause for thought or consideration, she was convinced that what she had heard about the incident was true and showed no interest in discussing anything. BUT IT'S NOT THE TRUTH! And I can prove it. I wanted the footage of myself saved because I was wearing sandals! I have been working out since the 80s and I don't wear sandals when I work out - especially on a machine. So in realizing what is happening - I am being discriminated against.

I am native American. I am large. My eyes are dark and intense. I come from a tribe of warriors. It is not my fault, it is how I was born. I knew this person would have no interest in what I said and she didn't. Never was there a moment of compassion or empathy. No - "Sorry this happened." No- "What could we do to fix this?" Nothing but a cold stare. By the time I was done discussing this issue with the operations manager I had the urge to use the restroom. I politely asked if I could use the restroom, and she replied - "You HAVE to check in." I was not going to work out, just use the restroom. I asked again - and said please. She said again in monotone "You have to check in." I decided I would simplify the situation by purchasing an energy drink so I would be granted privilege to the restroom as a paying customer.

I chose a drink, brought it to the counter to purchase. The manager did an "upsell" (a sales technique to make you spend more) - suggesting I will save some money. I agree, and purchase 2 energy drinks. I then ask if I can use the restroom and without batting an eye she says - NO! I have been fortunate throughout my 51 years on this great earth to go many places in the world and here in the United States and the opportunity to meet many people. I know when someone is discriminating against me.

They treat you as though you are invisible, as though they can say to you what they please and you must accept it. They talk as though they are powerful, but then call someone else to take you away. They try to make you feel like nothing and have no interest in granting you any human recognition and they emphasize these actions by not allowing the simplest of conveniences - a place to go to the bathroom, even after giving them money. That is the PASSION they have in their discriminatory practices. This is how Native Americans have been slowly pushed away. (Note: If you are a member - could you try to use the restroom to see if this is happening to everyone or just me. Thanks.)

After my last payment was made I continued to be billed after the last day of my contract. When I called in to see about a refund, they refused explaining that although my contract was over, I would continue on a month to month plan??? No one explained billing me continuously after I called in to cancel and the service rep was rude.

24 Hour Fitness company is a fraud. I signed up for a lifetime membership 16 years ago which was supposed to cover all of their "Fitness Clubs and Sport Clubs." When I recently went to use the downtown Sacramento club, the manager said 'We are a "super club" so your contract does not include us.' There was no such title as "super club" when I signed up. The title was added to the downtown club a few years ago with no changes to the club itself. The company had a class action lawsuit brought against it in Alameda County a few years ago.

The company lost the suit but is still doing the same fraud. Do not give your money to these crooks. The contract was very clear -- it was to cover all of their clubs and now they are revoking the contract by saying it does not apply to all of their clubs because of a title change made years after the contract. The Alameda County case was McCardle v. 24 Hour Fitness USA, Inc. No. RG08414888.

I've been a member since 2005, paid my dues each year only to be told I am unable to use the Super Sport clubs unless I paid an additional $39.99 each month. I have been told by others that this monthly fee is a scam and they are not required to pay - when they talked to the manager of the club. So I called to cancel, they did cancel me and credited back one month. However in reviewing my credit card statement I now see that they charged me twice more - I called to cancel, they will not credit me back the charges and state that "no notes" are in the system. I have cancelled yet again - I now have proof and will use when they charge me again. I've filed a charge dispute with my credit card company.

All 24 Hour gyms including the "Super" sports are dumps. There is no effort to maintain - as all the effort is put into working to get more money from loyal members. I see "online" several dissatisfied customers and a lawsuit has now been filed. Likely nothing will change unless others take them to court. They need to feel the financial pain of misleading customers who signed contracts in good faith that allowed members to go to "any 24 Hour" Fitness club. 24 Hour Fitness runs specials to join as members only to mislead their members once they have them "signed" and committed.

So let me start off by telling you what happened and then I will get to what I need help with if anyone out there is willing. A few months ago I was turned away at a 24 Hour for not having the "super sport" upgrade in my contract. I was sold an "all club" contract back in 2003, so naturally I was a bit confused. I was told that I had to pay for an upgrade to access this club. After getting a lot of runaround, I called corporate to complain and ask why/how my membership got changed. They told me that my membership was for all sports clubs, which did not include super sport. After a lot of hassle, I asked them to send me my contract to which they said, "It might take 4-6 weeks to email it to you." They are really hard to send.

A few days later though, I got my contract and it said, "all active and sport clubs" then on another line it said, "does not include access to (super sport) sporting clubs." The strange part about it is the line where it says "super sport" is off center and looks strange. It's too long causing the indent on the next line to not match the rest of the contract. The corporate employee never mentioned that "does not include access to (super sport)" was written in there, and I think he would mention that, since that's the issue I was complaining about and he was able to view it.

Additionally, super sports didn't open for another 6 months after my contract. After 2 months of calling, and emailing employees (all of which have excuses for not returning calls and emails), I still don't have any answer on how that "(super sport)" part got into that line of text in the contract. If it was added after my complaint that seems really unethical. What I would like is if there is anyone out there willing to provide a picture of the top of their contract so I can compare. Not the contract they print for you at the gym location, but the real full scanned one you signed at the time of signing up for membership. You can only get this from corporate. It would have to be from around the end of 2003.

I know the "does not include sporting clubs" appears in some contracts, but I have yet to find one that says the (super sport) part written in like mine. Ideally I would like to compare with a contract from around the same time as mine, but any contracts would be helpful. I don't need personal info, just a cropped image of that part of your contract for comparison. If they added this to my contract, I am going to be awfully upset, but if it's legitimate, then my only complaint would be failing to honor the agreement they made with me years ago.

Let me start by saying I am writing this a bit upset - you see, I purchased a package of training sessions from 24 Hour Fitness only to have to cancel a portion of them and the organization has refused to give me a refund. The reason I have to cancel is heartbreaking for me, one of my family members has rapid onset dementia and I am the only one that she has. Taking care of her, ensuring she has some quality of life, takes time. Couple that with my work and my family and fitting in training is just not in the cards.

I didn't arrive at that decision lightly - my trainer and I worked for a month to see if we could come up with a schedule and we just couldn't. So now I am out $800 and they say because of their "contract" they can't do anything, but I know that contracts have to in good faith and cannot benefit one party over the other, which theirs does, so it is basically not enforceable. What has upset me is not just the loss of money, it is the basic lack of care shown to me.

I started thinking how incredibly detrimental their lack of compassion is - not just for me but also for them. They rely on memberships and selling services like training - certainly they do not want to have their reputation and integrity questioned. All industries depend on "memberships" to some extent - you become a "member" when you are brand loyal, when you purchase a service, when you sign up with vendors for cell phones, health care, internet, insurance...name it. I believe at the core of deciding who you will sign on the dotted line with, you have an expectation that the relationship will be based in honesty and that should something happen to you, you will be shown care and respect.

How vital is it, then, that consumers are shown compassion. Not all situations can result in refunds or monetary actions but they all can hold within them decency. It does not take much to get negative press - and in this age of social media it travels very fast - but see how fast excellent customer service travels. And should you show one of your customers compassion in the face of difficulty, you will have them for life. Are you listening 24 Hour Fitness?

The first two are flat out lies, and we called them on it, but they would not bend, and would not cancel our membership. As for saying our membership had been cancelled, which was what happened most of the time, we were charged every month after that, and we would continue to call, but they "had no record that we had tried to cancel our membership, and therefore could not or would not refund our money" - but not to worry, because our membership was cancelled this time - only it never was.

This cycle went on for almost a year. My story is not unique, I personally know several people who have had the same issues I have described when attempting to cancel their memberships. It seems like the company has policies that make it deliberately difficult to cancel a membership so they can continue to collect member fees. Then why didn't receive a notice from 24 Hour Fitness last year informing me of this change? She said that they did send us a letter this March about the increase. No, you sent me a BILL saying this is what you owe, not a letter of notification of the price increase. There's a difference! She says "you're still getting a better rate than most people."

The point is that I signed a contract and was "wrongfully" informed by 24 Hour Fitness sales that this is a lifetime membership fee and would never change. She kept telling me, "well there's nothing that I or management can do for you", that it pretty much is what it is and to deal with it. I called and asked for the full refund and the customer service rep very rudely refused to refund the amount.

After being a member for over 20 yrs (even prior to being 24 hr) and having a grandfathered rate, I had to place my account on a temporary frozen status. When attempting to login and reactivate my account, I discovered my account had been cancelled without ANY communication - no call, mail, email, anything. I called in to speak with customer service, who was very rude and did not care to assist me with trying to resolve the issue. I was informed that "the company policy is that we cannot reactivate an account. We can only offer you a code to get a discount on a new membership."

In addition I was informed that the company "does not send out any notification prior to cancelling a membership and it is up to the member to keep track of that information when they go into the club." So, if anyone has a payment method that has been changed and is no longer valid, if you don't hurry into the club, they will just cancel your membership without giving you ANY notice.

After decades of working in quality and customer experience, all I can say is 24 Hour Fitness policies are not customer friendly at all. They do not place any value on customer experience, nor do their customer service agents have any interest in resolving customer issues or demonstrating any traits of a quality customer service agent or supervisor. My recommendation would be to join a different gym that values their customers and recognizes the importance of customer experience and loyalty.

24 Hour Fitness appears to have grown too much and has not been able to maintain quality processes nor employees. I would be interested in joining with others who have had memberships cancelled without any communication to contact an attorney regarding filing a Class Action Lawsuit. If anyone is interested please respond to the thread and make note of your interest so I can begin gathering information to proceed.

I have been a member for many years. The equipment is ok, pool tiny and minimal for 3-4 people to do laps. Environment: Poor. Loud ALL THE TIME. I hate the volume of the place and have come to believe they keep volume and music very loud so as to drive anyone who is not 22 yrs old out the place. I find myself wearing ear plugs every time I go so as not to be annoyed by the 80 db noisy music. I would be happy to pick my own music on my own device. I have mentioned this more than once and have had absolutely no evidence of anyone giving a rats behind about that concern.

Trainers: No real expertise in physical training. When I joined I had 4-5 sessions, and it became obvious that the trainers were not really qualified to be called trainers. When I asked a few questions about relevant things during the "free" introductory training sessions, I found that they really knew how to BS, but did not know anything a qualified trainer should know. Their so called "qualifications" were based on a 24 Hour Fitness designed program... Or a mail order/internet program. This is a pseudo qualification... And is in fact not in any way equivalent to what a real athletic trainer needs to do to be qualified.

Most (likely all) the trainers I spoke to could not provide any evidence of real expertise in physical trainers (and I know and have worked with some real trainers in the past). It is largely a big money maker for 24 hours, and not a valuable service. Unfortunately, some of the "used car sales persons" pretending to be trainers... are also on the prowl for a sexual experience with the customers. Several people I have met over the years at the facility had mentioned that to me... And a co-worker had a very messy divorce that resulted from a short-term escapade that his spouse had with a sexual predator masquerading as a 24 Hour Fitness trainer.

Overall I only go to this club because of the 24 hours per day availability... and need ear plugs to tolerate it. The staff are all very young and poorly trained. If I did not have a very cheap membership at this time... I would definitely cancel. If you want a trainer, go elsewhere. If you do not like blasting obnoxious music all the time go elsewhere (even a few quiet hours late at eve would be ok with me but they refuse to consider that at ANY time). Their sales tactics are also nasty... And their front desk is full of short termers who think they will make a killing by selling you a false promise of a great deal. Just read the other reviews.

Found out that they continued to charge my account for $32 a month after the 6 months and after being a customer for 20 years. I called about getting refunded the 5 months they have been charging me and after speaking with a manager he refused to help me out. Terrible customer service and even if this place was convenient, I would never go back. They lost a loyal customer.

Large Up-front payment and $49/year per person - for life for the entire family! I should have known that the company was unethical when, in 2009, I went to get a card for my son when he turned 13 and they amended him to the "family" plan at $99/year.

That was not what I was sold when I bought the family membership it should have been $49/year. I didn't fight it too much, Now in 2016, they increased his fee to $149/year. OK now I am pissed. It should be $49/year as initially sold to me. When I called Customer Service, they cited 3c - stating he signed his contract after 2006... NO, I added him to my contract that was signed before clause 3c - my lifetime family contract. I did not sign him up for a new contract, they are stating I did... NO I just added his name to my contract to get him a gym card... Total BS Completely UNETHICAL. This is a class action - no doubt.

Back in June of 2015 I let my coworker move in with me. Now I have a full gym at home including 70 lb powerblocks, weight bench, pull up bar, yoga mat, bands, and about 5 different workout DVDs. I usually worked out at home but since I was letting my coworker stay with me we decided to get gym memberships. My roommate was already a member of 24 so he persuaded me to sign up with 24. My friend had told me that I could try it out for a day because he had a membership but when I got there I found out they had no one day trial or a one day membership.

When I was presented with a contract I was very discouraged as it seemed like a ripoff. The only thing that kept me from saying NO was that I was told that I could cancel my contact by paying the first and last months fee which would only be $60. The contract was $30 a month which was alright but there was a $120 membership fee for signing up. Like "welcome to 24, now give us your money!" I decided to sign even though I felt bad about it. After a couple months there were some personal/business/work problems and I had to kick my roommate out. We had only gone a hand full of times and I had spent close to $200.

So after my roommate left, I had no way to get to the gym so I decided to cancel. After being on hold for an extremely long time I finally got through to their 800 number and I was informed that to cancel my membership it was going to be $300! So I decided not to do that. So I decided to suspend my contract. Now I run around in a rat maze trying to talk the 24 Hour staff which is absolutely atrocious, not because they are bad people but because ownership is nothing but dirty scumbags trying to take your money anyway possible. I had to call this person, then this person. Then I had to call in on this exact day so they don't charge me and then I called on that day and I didn't call the right person, so I had to call another person and finally I got my contract suspended. Then the day after they call to tell me that the credit card on file was expired!

But why the hell are you charging my card in the first place if I was told my contract was on hold from the day before. The girl that called me insisted that I get transferred to the 800 number and I said "no, I spoke with them yesterday!" Eat me 24 Hour Fitness, you are by far the worse business I've ever had the displeasure to be a part of. You guys are shady and are a bunch of dirty lawyers scamming people. Plus I have a yearly fee of $40 that I get even when my contract is suspended.

Dealing with 24 Hour Fitness has been a major headache and their business practices are shady and I don't recommend this place to anybody. I would rate you zero stars if that were an option. You have me so pissed that I will make it my life's work to tell all the people on social media, how crooked, scam like, and how I've been harassed by you guys. I really regret signing anything at 24 Hour Fitness. Oh and by the way, corporate 24 does not have an email or a phone number. Just another thing that shows you how crooked these people really are. Eat my left ** 24! If you don't want me telling everybody about how crooked your business is then why don't you email me and offer to cancel my contact. Doubt that will happen. **, there is my email in case you dirty scumbags decide to change your mind!

I also signed up for the "lifetime" sport membership back in 2006. I payed $700 upfront for 3 years and was promised I would only pay $49 per year thereafter. However I did notice on the fine print that said they could increase the annual fee anytime they want. But this was definitely not what the salesperson said to me. It's been ten years and I know nothing lasts forever, but it still sucks when I received my invoice this year and saw that my membership had doubled. Makes me wonder if they're going to do this again in a few years. Anyways I logged into my account online to pay the membership and saw that there was TWO separate amounts due. One for $99 and another for $49 totaling $148! Now I was pissed off.

So I called customer service and calmly asked the rep what was going on. She explained that there was indeed an increase this year for membership, but the two separate balances are a result of an error in the system. She kindly waived the $99 for this year only and I was able to pay my normal $49/year for the very last time. So going forward starting 2017, it will be $99/year until they decide to raise the rates again. At that point I'm not sure if I still want to keep my membership, but it is still cheaper than what most gyms charge...with the exception of Planet Fitness but we all know what a joke of a gym they are and in the Bay Area there's barely any locations.

I have been a member of 24 Hr for years, and have watched as it raises the monthly fees and fails to notify me PRIOR to doing so. Also, today we found out that Personal Trainer packages, which are pre-paid, expire without any notice. Now telling a long-time customer that their paid for sessions stop being valid after a certain date is sort of like telling someone that their paid for gift card expired, extremely shady, especially since that "use by" date is arbitrary and doesn't make sense for the number of sessions in the package (and doesn't account for trainer's missing their sessions and other session cancellation reasons.)

When we tried to go from the club super sport package down to a one club membership they were going to up charge us 50 dollars to downgrade! It seems that no matter what you wish to do, they will tag on excessive fees and up charges, or conveniently hide expiration dates and other gibberish. When we tried to speak to management about it they were terse, and answered "it was in the contract we sent you AFTER you registered"... AFTER.

Anyone who is seeking a gym membership should steer clear of this money-grubbing enterprise. They have been upgrading really nasty clubs to their super-sport status and forcing members to upgrade in order to access the clubs they were using all along. Worse still, the super sport classification doesn't provide any upgrades other than fees. No towel service, no cleanliness, no superior service... just more expensive. I hope that they learn that a disappointed or angry customer is a bad thing, and maybe one day demonstrate some consideration for us. So thumbs down, one star, and shame on you 24 Hr.

I joined in 2005 with a contract that guaranteed a $49 annual renewal amount. The membership was paid for 3 years. In 2008 the membership dues were paid again. This was the start of the most awful business experience I've had. For the next 6 months, the 24 Hour staff harassed me every single time I went to the gym. I was told that I had not paid my dues. I called 24 Hour Fitness corporate office to try to get this rectified. I was told that it would be corrected each time. I, also, talked with accounting who said that they did receive my payment. I carried my bank statement with me every time I went to the gym in order to prove that I did pay. I still have my receipt.

The harassment continued every single time I went to the gym. This made me dread going to the gym. In October I went to the gym and was informed that my membership was terminated with the reason that dues were not paid. The dues were paid and I still have the proof. I was absolutely beyond frustrated, ridiculously tired of 24 Hours' inability to fix the situation, and feeling beat down from the 6 months of harassment by the staff. I had done everything in my power to get it fixed. 24 Hour Fitness did nothing to fix it. At that time I was bawling my eyes out, I was so frustrated. The same person, Jeff **, who sold me my membership was working that night. He said he could fix it by setting up a new account that would not be associated with the termination. He said that was the only way to fix it. He tricked me into believing that the problem was solved.

This year my membership dues increased by 202%. I called 24 Hour Fitness to dispute this and found out that I was lied to by Jeff ** when he created the second account. Instead, he signed me up on a new contract that was not the same as the original contract. Please have some business ethics and honor the original contract that we agreed to. If you reinstate the original membership that was wrongfully terminated then I will continue my membership. Also, guarantee that I will not be harassed or have my account terminated after paying. The premises are old and in need of repairs but the quality is lacking. The promised amenities are just not delivered. The facility is dirty, the pool is out of order frequently.

The whole idea of committing to a multi year membership was to secure a fixed price. Nothing in the contract indicates that the company can increase the price without notification and in such tremendous percentage. Wouldn't this constitute a breach of contract? Whenever an issue is brought up to the club management, a series of excuses are listed as to why such and such item is not ready, available or in functioning order. There is definitely a lot to be desired when it comes to quality of services and business practices applied. The salespersons promise but when it comes time to deliver no one is held accountable.

We bought a package over 10 years ago with an initial upfront price of $500 for three years membership. It also states that our renewal fee will be $99/yr for a lifetime membership. Today, I got a new bill from them saying they will increase my membership to $200/yr. WTF!! Your gyms are dirty and the equipment are broken all the time. Yet, you want to increase the membership fee. Is there a lawyer who wanted to take on a class action suit?

They check my contract and said that was correct so they change my monthly due to $9.99 and said they would honor 24 Hour Fitness. Now it's 4/01/2016 and said I would have to pay $24.99. No letter or email was sent to inform of this, my credit card notify of the change. The manager of the club I go to said each year they can charge a $1.00 or 10 percent. So how do they charge $24.99? So I called the corporate office and spoke to the first guy who answered who read a formed response delineating the new stuff they're doing to their gyms. I asked for a manager and again was told of the wonderful upgrades, but again she could not otherwise explain my increase. I told them the increase is arbitrary and now I have nothing to count on every year - because they can write me out by raising the rate however they see fit. That's 250% increase. When I contacted customer service, Elizabeth, the rep, told me, the increase is due to new equipment and staffing cost. That's such a lie. Since various 24 Hour Fitness have different machines, I have worked out regularly at 6 different 24 hour fitness gym around where I live at least twice a month each. And I tried to visit every 24 hour fitness nearby when I am driving to a new area or taking a vacation. I have been to most of 24 hour fitness in California. Yet when my contract was time to renew it jumped all the up to $174 an increase of 0.56% increase. This is well beyond 5% of MPM limit. Nevertheless, I have every intention in fighting this as it is NOT right. GLORY be to our LORD to make a way for us. I told them that is not correct as I spoke to other friends, co-workers and even my wife that had separate membership and their rate did not go up.

I call corporate and they told me the reason for big increase was due to new gyms being built, and improvements being made for to 24 hour gyms. I explained to the representative that none of the gyms I attended - 4 at that time had not received any remodeling, nor new equipment or added services. Her reply, "We can't help you." Got card in mail.

3/2016 - Called CS - said everyone got increase, so to take care of failing equipment, etc. I wonder if the 2010 broken-in locker incident (card-all stolen) was a "set up" so I'd have to sign something (new contract) for a new card? I joined 24 Hour Fitness back in 2008. I signed a contract that required a large amount paid up front, (almost $500), for 3 years. I was VERBALLY TOLD that I would only pay $29.00 per year after the 3 years, and that amount could only be raised 3% per year. This year my yearly fee was raised from $29.00 to $79.00! That's a huge increase! So I pulled out my old contract and read the fine print on the back which states that the 3% increase only applies to month by month memberships. It states that the annual dues can be increased every year. I was LIED to by the salesperson at the time. Yes, 24 Hour Fitness has done some remodeling and some new equipment has been added to the gyms in my area (which I heard they rarely do), (usually once every 10 years). Also, the gyms in my area, and in other states I've visited, usually have some poorly maintained equipment if the gym is over 5 years old.

For example, a lot of the stationary bikes making clicking noises and or slip when pedaling. My experience is that these items rarely get fixed!! Other equipment issues sometimes take a very long time to get repaired. Also, the shower area can be unclean, (it depends on the gym you go to). When I joined the gym I was told the pool and Jacuzzi would be a saline based water. I recently discovered they now use chlorine. I am not writing to strictly complain about these issues, but bring them up to say that this does not help warrant an increase in my fee. As I am a senior, I was so grateful to be locked into a rate that my fixed income could handle. Now I have to worry if the rate will continue to increase each year!

If 24 Hour Fitness is reading this I would encourage you to look at how you delegate the finances to the managers and how those funds can be used to make repairs or provide new equipment. If what I heard is true, it is great for the managers, but not great for the members. My father used to own an independent gym. I used to help him. One of the best ways we learned to keep the gym financially successful is to charge a larger annual rate when you join as 'one' of the payment options. Most people drop out after 3 months or so and the result is a larger income coming in instead of them dropping out if they are only paying monthly dues. It helps the gym financially, and also helps the people who do stay to want to stay. It's also wise to treat your current members decently by not deceiving them when signing a contract or driving them away by huge membership increases!

Your loyal members can spread the word about your gym if they are happy. Please don't let greed and poor management keep you from being a growing prosperous business that serves the community by actually helping people get or stay healthy. I sadly watched another large health club chain I was a member of, go out of business, due to the same issues I'm writing about. Sad to say, this increase is not a good sign for the way 24 Hour Fitness is doing business! Let's hope for change as I'm not the only one who is feeling unfairly treated!

Like many others in this thread, we got a notice recently from 24 Hour Fitness that our annual membership fees were going from $49-$99. My wife had been a member since the early 90s, and they had "add a spouse" type program in 2007. I paid $355.81, to cover myself as the add-on member for three years, then we were told it would be $49 a year indefinitely. (My wife and I vividly remember that was the agreement we were told by the sales staff, and that my $49 rate would not increase, ever!)

I went to my local 24-hour fitness where I frequent and talk to the manager. I was calm and respectful, and made sure I told him that this issue I had regarding the rate increase is "nothing personal". He said he was getting a lot of complaints about this issue of increased rates. He suggested "pay the new rate, then try to fight it", suggesting I call the corporate office about this issue after paying the new rate. Of course, I knew once I paid the new rate, I was a basically agreeing to it, and would realistically have no recourse to try to get my old rate back.

I think I'm one of the rare people that still has the original contract we signed in hand. I showed the contract to the manager, and he seemed to know the section in the fine print on the backside of the contract that basically stated they can change the rates whenever they want to after the first three years expire and I paid the first year's agreed renewal rate of $49. In the fine print on the back of the contract in section 3, under the club "financial policy" section, section 3(C) states:

"Right to Increase Dues: If you have a monthly payment membership (MPM), 24 Hour may increase your monthly dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than five percent (5%) of your then current monthly dues. Any such increased one not occur during the first three 3 months of your membership.

So it sounds like after the first year of the "prepaid initial annual renewal amount" they can change the price whenever they want, as much as they want. It's a typical "bait and switch", sales person tells you one thing, but the fine print states otherwise. There is too long columns of fine print on the backside of the contract. Their attorneys did a good job covering themselves so they can increase rates in the future.

Who reads all the fine print when you're buying a car at a dealership? I wonder if their attorneys will slip in similar verbiage so they can change what you pay for the car whenever they want to. Maybe that's a bad example, but ultimately I wonder what recourse we as consumers really have if we sign these contracts, especially without reading them thoroughly. I'd love to see some sort of class-action lawsuit against 24 Hour for these deceptive sales practices, but don't know what it will take to make that happen.
