Upon updating my cc information I click on club visits. I was shocked to see I was at a club I haven't been. That meant someone had looked me up. It hard to believe because no one knows how I purposely misspelled my name to avoid stalkers. Someone in the LAX club gave my club visits to a member. This is the second time this happens. First time was a nightmare and I'm still not over it. Now it starts again. I have to look over my shoulder. I'm scared. I reported the issue a month ago and I haven't got any responses from them.

Been a customer for 17 years. When I upgraded to "sport" in 2007 I was not told that an additional clause was added (section 3a) that allows them to increase rates. Had I kept my 1999 membership they weren't able to increase rates. I was told numerous times if I paid them a huge amount IN ADVANCE I was going to be "set for life" -- complete lies they used to get your money. And now they want more? Who's to say they won't increase AGAIN next year? Ridiculous! LA Fitness said they will honor the rates, in writing.

Same story here: Signed up in 2007 when 24 Hour took on Bally Fitness. They were desperate and offered something they never had any intention of honoring. Pay three years in advance and pay $49 a year thereafter for life. THIS IS A FACT THAT THEY SOLICITED MEMBERS AT THE GYM WITH THE VERBAL PROMISE and we who thought we could trust them did not think we needed to play attorney and read to see if they were lying. I got my notice bumped up to $149 a year. OK as far as I know a corporation and its employees are not empowered to willfully lie to deceive and steal your hard-earned money. So all I read here is the same complaints. How do we file a class action lawsuit?

Like a lot of people on here, my dues are going from $49 to $99. February 2007 I paid around $700 for 3 years of membership, 5 personal trainer session, and some goodies. After the 3 years the dues were to be $49 for life. My wife signed up years ago in August for the same deal. I have seen my statement for $99 and in August I assume she will be getting the same increase. If we don't stop it here what will be the next increase? $49 was supposed to be for life. I would of never spent over a grand if I knew 24 Hour Fitness would pull this stunt.

I was promised when I upgraded to the super sport level, my membership wouldn't go up anymore and it was 39.99 for the first year then it would be 29.99 after that but however, recently I got an email saying that they are going to be charging me a 1.50 more which it would make it to 31.49. For the meantime they said they would only charge me 20.99 for 3 months but still the point is that weren't even going to charge me at all. So I am really pissed off that they're charging me the extra charges when originally said wouldn't do it. I been a member since 2004 and a loyal customer also. I very unhappy how they decided to do this to me out of the clear blue sky.

I would like to sign up for a class action against 24 Hour Fitness. I too signed up back in 2007 with an initial fee of $400 and was promised to have an annual fee of $49 after 3 years from my activation date. Now when I went to pay my annual fee at one of the sites, the rep told me that my fee went up to $99. That's a 100% increase! He told me that I can call corporate to get my fee back to $49. When I called, however, I became extremely upset to find that the rep was blaming me for my negligence for not receiving the notices. How can I know? I never receive one! I've been a loyal customer for the last 8 years. It is unethical and should be illegal for this corrupted corporation to increase prices without adequate notification.

Been having the same issue as everyone else. With signing up paying over 700 for three years and being told we will pay a set rate for life. Then they raised that rate over 200%... I called their legal department today her name is Kasey **... She was floored by it. If we keep the pressure on them it will ensure they have to honor their contract.

used the jacuzzi and pool without taking a shower. I did mentioned it to the front desk employees, while some of them laughed and found it very funny. Only one person seemed to understand the lack of hygiene. During the time of observation I observed one female entering the sauna fully clothed in workout clothing and shoes, another with workout cloth and hoodie... The sauna area was filthy and to me that's not a situation I like to find when I am trying to stay healthy.

I paid a premium for a 24 Hour Fitness membership back in March of 2004. (Paid 3 yrs upfront in exchange for a low yearly membership thereafter) The contract states that the membership may increase between 3%-5% per year. Even if they raised my membership 5% per year, that would only be a maximum of 60% total. A 200% increase in one year seems VERY illegal to me. I would like to join a class action lawsuit against 24 Hour Fitness. Please contact me if you know who to contact about this. I don't mind increases, but, 200% in one year is CRAZY!!!

I signed a contract with 24 Hour Fitness. According to the sales rep it was a lifetime. I paid upfront for 3 years and was told that I would pay a set fee each year. This year they sent me a letter stating my fee went up $57. They told me that they can raise the price as they want after a year. This makes me very upset because it's not what the salesperson told me. I see others are having the same problem and 24 Hours is not going to help us.

I have dealt with their corporate office before trying to do a transfer and it was pure agony to get through to them. This is the absolute worst way to treat a member. How about if we do group lawsuit? What can this website do to assist?

In 2008, 24 Hour Fitness signed me in for a lifetime membership at a yearly rate of $49.00 after paying a lump sum of down payment (I do not currently remember the amount I paid at that time). I vividly remember that the 24 Hour Fitness staff who sold me this offer at that time had verbally informed me that this offer was a lifetime membership. I have been promptly paying the yearly rate of $49.00 from 2008 to 2015 (for the last 7 years). However, now (2016), 24 Hour Fitness increased my yearly rate to $120.00 (an increase of 145%) and forced me to pay this amount and if I do not pay right away, they treated me to cancel my membership on the spot.
This is very unfair, "dictatorial", deception of consumers, and a major breach of contract. I call all who are in this kind of predicament to take 24 Hour Fitness to court. I ask the Department of Consumer Affairs to investigate this matter and take appropriate legal action against 24 Hour Fitness. I demand 24 Hour Fitness to instate me back to my lifetime membership at a yearly rate of ONLY $49.00.

I purchased a contract with 24 Hour Fitness in 2007 where I paid 3 years upfront and then my rates would not go up for life as long as I kept my account active which I did. However this year the raised it by about 60%. I spoke with the gym where I signed up for a copy of my signed contract. They said they don't keep them and gave me a corporate number to call. I called them and they denied me having any such contract and that they could raise my rates the first year after the three years but they didn't until now. I remember very clearly it was for life.
I asked for my signed contract. She states it will take 5 days to email it although she could see it right on her computer. I waited and it never came. I called again and specifically said "Again I want a copy of my signed contract." This time I did get an email. The email read "Because we have recently received an extraordinary amount of requests for copies of contracts, you may be receiving this late." Sounds like there a lot of others with this same issue. They did attach a contract that was typed but nowhere on it was anyone's signature let alone mine. I called again and said I asked for a copy of my SIGNED contract and they said again they will email it.

Signed up for 24 Hour Fitness membership 10 years ago under a deal where I pay for 3 years up front and then have a lifetime yearly fee of $49. Salesperson was very specific about that. My bad for not reading the fine print of the contract. Today I got an invoice for $99. Not only was there not supposed to be any increase... but the increase is more than 100%. Called customer service and was basically brushed off (they told me they would sent me a copy of my contract where it says that membership fees can increase at their discretion). When I asked if I can get the address to send a complaint letter to... was told there is no address!? Very disappointing. Would never recommend 24 Hour Fitness to anyone.

I have been a loyal customer for 2 years and wanted to set-up automatic bill-pay using my checking account versus my debit card. After 6 months and four 4 attempts the billing department could not successfully set up this service for me. I confirmed with my bank that 24 HourFitness never tried to bill my checking account. But 24 HourFitness claimed that when they tried to bill my checking account the payment was denied due to insufficient funds. Possibly this was a ploy to charge me late fees. I asked to pay a year in advance. I was quoted $629.99 as opposed to $504.36 if I continued to pay monthly for a year. I wish I had read the feedback from previous posts. I am cancelling my membership today because there is a clear pattern of poor business practices and illegal billing.

Signed up for a membership in 1990, lifetime family membership in California. I continued to pay my dues each and every month regardless if I went or not. I moved to AZ Sept. 2014 and notified them of the move, went to their Gilbert facility. 24 Hour Fitness sold out to LA Fitness here in AZ and did not notify me. I try to go back to the gym after being on medical and found out that I cannot go so I called 24 Hour Fitness. Was told by the representative that my membership should have been transferred. Went into LA Fitness and was told that was not true. I was told that since my membership was bought in California that I was not eligible for the AZ transfer even though I had notified them that I live in Arizona. This transfer was 5 months ago while I was on medical, they continued to take the payments out of my account, not notifying me of the sell to LA Fitness and now they will not let me go to LA Fitness.
I called 24 Hour Fitness once again, was again told that they did not transfer my LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP to Arizona but I could still go in California. Why would I want to do that - what part of Arizona did they not understand? They will only return this month's dues and cancelled my membership. I sent an email to their Corporate and 1 week later still have not heard from them. They are liars and cheats. Do not go to these people - after being a member for 27 years they will not work with you! They should be sued for fraud.

Signed up for a membership in 2008. Cancelled it soon after not thinking they may be dishonest. I didn't bother checking. Mind you this was 7 plus years ago. Today I opened my bank statement and there was a 44 dollar charge from them. Went straight there. Even the gym management was shocked. They found one account of my name and a second one with a gross misspelling of my name. We had to run my debit card number to even find it. So I called their 800 number. The guy was smug and told me it was my fault. Says it happens all the time people pay for the gym 20 years and never go. Now I'm mad so I had bank statements printed. Ordered a copy of my so called original contract. And turn it into my bank as fraud. Hope something will come of it. Has anyone else dealt with this?

I am a longstanding member of their Santa Monica club. I originally joined in 1990 and have remained a member throughout the ownership changes. Last year I noticed that I had not received a renewal notice. I called the club and was told that nobody at the club had access to my account information and that there was no way to determine if my account was paid. I didn't have time to investigate and waited to receive some kind of cancellation notice but because I never heard from them, I assumed I was up to date.
I do go for long periods of time without using the club but then I get inspired and start to go again. This year, I decided to start going and learned that my membership had lapsed. I called to reinstate my membership and again was refused assistance. I was told that the only way to get help was to write a letter to the club. I wrote them a letter but they refused to help me in any way. They claim that they sent me a notice but that is not true. It's obvious that they are lying about that because they refused to let me know if my dues were current when I called to ask. Clearly, they were only looking for a chance to charge me the rate of the new membership. As a member since 1990, I can assure anyone that a membership at that club is not worth more than $99 a year.

They raised the fee and then cancelled me saying they sent me a bill but they didn't. I complained and to no avail. They were adamant and I got taken. I am as I see a part of the corporate plan to get rid of a contractual agreement. I think a class action suit could address our claims and it could be proven that they are carefully orchestrating these tactics. Now they are telling Costco buyers that their cards are up all the same purchase date. Feb 3. So if you fail to pay they collect your 2 years' costs. But in the case where it is the other way around. I love working out at the gym but I think the way the memberships are one sided needs to be addressed. I am amazed as I thought it was not so widespread.

I signed a contract with 24hr Fitness back in 2003. The deal was for $600. I get a 3 year membership, they added a 4th year as an incentive, and after the 4 years my annual renewal fee would be $24 a year. Along with the deal was also some other perks, $10 a month would allow me to bring a guest with me when I worked out, training sessions, etc. I always made sure I paid my bill so as not to break contract and lose my membership.
In 2008, I was injured at work and stopped going to the gym but continued to pay my membership. In 2010 I was able to go back to the gym, but I was told that my membership had been cancelled because I didn't make a payment. I spoke with the manager of the 24 Fitness and he told me that unless I can show him a receipt that I paid there is nothing he can do for me. I showed him my bank statement and proved my case.
He told me that he would sign me up for a new contract because for some reason my membership was cancelled. I told him that I wanted all of benefits from my original 2003 contract to be reinstated. He told me that those benefits were no longer offered at 24 Fitness. I explained to him that that wasn't my problem and that they illegally cancelled my membership and they need to fix it. He kept telling me that the old contract was gone and there is nothing he can do to get it back and he was doing his best to get me a good deal on a new contract. After a heated back and forth with him and his supervisors I was reassured that everything would be back as it was in 2003.
Now I get the renewal notice and my fees went up to $74 a year. I called customer service and the operator kept referring to the contract I signed in 2010 states that they can raise my rates. I kept telling him that the 2010 contract would never exist if they never illegally cancelled my contract from 2003. He told me to write to the corporate offices and request a copy of my 2003 contract.
My feeling is that they cancelled the membership in 2003 to get me to sign a rewritten contract with the fine print about raising of the annual fees. Shame on 24hr Fitness, no wonder all these new gyms are springing up in my area. People are fed up with 24hr Fitness and are shopping around for alternative gyms.Anybody else have similar experiences in dealing with 24hr Fitness?

I bought a fixed annual renewal rate membership 8 years ago. I paid an initial premium for this locked in rate. I was told my annual renewal rate would be locked at $199.99 per year, and it has been that way until this year, when they raised my "locked" renewal rate to $299.99 per year. I'm looking for my original contract to see if there is the same fine print statement other people have reported that says they are allowed to raise the annual renewal by $100 per year. When I purchased this membership, this fine-print was never discussed with me. I was told this was a lifelong fixed renewal rate, which is why I paid a premium for the initial 2 years. This is about as corrupt and dishonest as it can get.

In 2004, I signed an IBM sponsored fitness agreement with 24 Hour Fitness guaranteeing a lifetime rate of $99 annually for a full access membership. The rate was also guaranteed to be independent of IBM employment. This price has been honored until this year when it drastically raised the annual price by over 100% to $215. The customer service said to cover the costs of upgrading the facilities. What a joke! Said it was the new owners/board members right to exercise fee increases so they did. Now they are reclassifying existing gyms as super sports when they were just sports before. Also said that contracts signed in 2006 and after will get fee increases. Glad I signed up in 2004. I have signed an agreement with 24 Hour Fitness for the membership fee $49.99/year after I paid the first year almost $700. They keep their agreement for couple years and now they raise the price up triple time which is $150/per year and include tax it would be $161.29/year. I called them to ask why they raise the cost that much. They said with that price it would be cheaper than other fitness companies offer. Therefore, they would increase the price to whatever amount they think it is right for them. I think they trick their customer by offering a low cost of membership after paying a big amount of money upfront. However, it's only true for few years and then the membership price would be shoot up. I give them 1 star by not honoring their words. If there is a negative star, I would give it to them.

My friends and I purchased a lifetime membership 2004, paid about $560.00 which was 11 years ago. Every year I pay a renewal fee of 49.00 usually after receiving a bill. A few months ago I started wondering if I was paid up. I'm getting older and a little forgetful but usually I'm very responsible with my finances. I logged onto my 24hr account and it appeared that I paid it as it said "amt due 49. Payments/credits 49. Balance -0-." Then a month or so later for some reason I went back online, looked at that page and there is a + sign which when you click on it it says "11/17/15 Credits 49.00". I thought maybe I overpaid them, paid twice or the like. It says Membership cancelled. I was determined never to lose my lifetime membership at 24 Hour!!
I sent them an email... they said to call 800#. I called and they transferred me to a woman whom I guess handles my account/situation. She was always "out" so I had to leave VM. She never called me back. Today I called and insisted on just speaking to man who answered. He said there's no record of me calling before by looking at notes on my account. Oh please.... I explained my situation to him. In the end he said I'm out of luck, too bad, so sad. I said there is no one else I could speak to they represent the CEO. I had some choice words (no cussing, no yelling) and told him he/they are making a big mistake doing this. I accept responsibility for not paying it on time, but, it would of been nice to receive a letter, a bill, a reminder, anything.
I realize they are happy to not renew my account cause they already got my money up front. As I stated to him "I bet you work harder to get your money from the monthly dues members" but not me. I told him that he DOES have the authority, or someone does, authority or ability to fix it, to say to themselves "hey this guy has been a loyal member for 11 years maybe he just forgot to pay this on time". NOPE. See ya later alligator. I will do everything in my power to get my friends, business associates, and corporations that I have contact with to cancel any business dealings or promotions with 24 Hour Fitness. After I hung up I googled "problems with 24 Hour..." and this site came up, with many stories of lifetime membership renewal issues/$$$.

All was good until 2007 when we missed some bills in a row (they were going to my Mom's house). When I talked with Member Services, they said that due to a change in billing, our family membership which had always billed us in one lump sum for all 6 members, now would have to bill us separately and that I had to sign another contract and pay the past dues but that our agreement was the same. Unfortunately after almost 9 years, they have now decided to hit us with a 250% price increase and I have essentially been told by Member Services and the local 24 Hour Fitness center manager that I have to deal with it. I, as well as apparently MANY others, signed up with 24 Hour Fitness in 2008 under some type of promotional agreement that after paying a large upfront sum in 2008, the next three years would be at no cost and then all subsequent years forever would be at a fixed rate of $49.00. It appears that I'm not the only one who was misled and lied to, and I asked the people in their 'customer service' area how so many people could not be telling the truth for which they obviously had no answer. After talking several times with what appeared to be more of a 'phone bank' in the company's 'customer service' department, they said that nothing could be done or would be done, so basically it's tough luck.
This is wrong and a real disgrace, particularly, now finding that so many people have experienced the same situation (and in more than one area of the country). Companies like this get away with these types of unethical and effectively illegal activities and should be stopped. Whether it's additional revealing reviews like this, joining another health club, contacting the Better Business Bureau, getting the media (TV and/or newspapers) involved, or some type of class action suit, somehow this needs to be stopped. It's important to note that it isn't necessarily the amount of money that's involved for any particular person, but totally the principal that a company like this is able to take money from its members.

Now, 24 Hour Fitness is reneging on this agreement. My yearly rate has tripled this year. Many consumer protection websites are recording the complaints of angry 24 Hour Fitness clients with this same promotional fee structure.
I contacted the 24 Hour Fitness billing department. They were completely unhelpful and denied that anyone had locked in lifetime discounted rates. They claimed to right to change their fee structure at will. They refused to admit that there was a "spirit of good faith" in the contract. Called the corporate office and was told that 24 Hour was under new management and found a clause that allowed them to increase dues. For 7 years, the company has honored that agreement however I just received my invoice for 2016 and they have increased my "locked" in annual rate at 100%. This is now just one of many things this Company is doing poorly.
When I signed up for this annual membership, they never told me (nor in the contract) that I would be excluded from promotions. I was not able to take advantage of their $10/month club upgrade b/c it was exclusive for monthly and I was an annual. Plus, in order to take advantage of this $10/month club upgrade, I would have to pay a monthly due (like a month member) first and then the promo could be applied. I've written to corporate and bottom line, that is the policy and they would be losing money if they included their annual member in the $10 club upgrade. Not sure how paying them an extra $10 a month is losing money. If there is a class action lawsuit, I am definitely interested.

I belonged to Bally Total Fitness for 25 years. When 24 bought their Englewood, CO club. I called to see what I had to do to attend. I was told that I'd have to simply sign up... Like a brand new customer. I hung up incredulous. A year or so passed and I signed up for a trial at the club so I could exercise during the holiday season thinking that I would join 24. When I spoke to the manager at the Englewood club on the phone (she called me in response to my trial setup), she told me that, in fact, I could have and can still sign up for "all of the clubs" as I'd been a member of Bally's.
I called a few days later and signed up with their inbound telephone sales person who I asked, "So, this allows me to go to all the clubs in the USA like I could before?" He replied, "You get all the benefits you had when with Bally." I did not grill him as to exactly what that meant. When I got the 24 Hour website, it said that I could go to only one club. I called customer service and they said that I could use a subset only and that I'd have to upgrade my membership. I told them that based on all of the different stories I've heard, I should just call it quits as I don't think that they represented the facts to me and that it does not make sense for me to pursue a relationship with them.
My complaints are: (1) that the people that I spoke to seemingly mislead me about the clubs I could attend, (2) that they said it would take UP TO 30 DAYS to return my money (it's amazing that my money can get to them in seconds and the refund is 30 days), and (3) I asked for a confirmation number several times and both customer service reps said that they were emailing me a confirmation number. I told the second one that I'd wait and make sure I got it since they would not provide one on the phone.
Now that I have the email, it says, "A manual service request must be submitted to process this." I was not informed of any of this on the phone. There is NO CONFIRMATION NUMBER (although the word 'cancel' does appear). What constitutes "manual service request?" I don't know. I called them manually. But with no guidance, how am I to know whether this cancellation email with no numbers constitutes notification of refund? Or am I to do something else?
This series of events leads me to believe that 24 Hour fitness intentionally kept me on hold while I received the email to avoid telling me that they do not provide a confirmation number and that I had to decipher what "manual" means. My fault, once I saw it, I told them I received it and we hung up. I would love to be the lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit. 24 Hour fitness is crooked and their lawyers probably calculated the probable fine and recommended that they just sales up and the fine will be a pittance.

They wanted members badly when it was a new gym and are now turning backs on a great many, I see. It should be unlawful to increase for unspecified amount. This is dirty, sleight of hand. I've just been passed from corporate to club back to corporate.

I joined 24 Hour Fitness in Overland Park, Kansas in 2007. I paid about $700 down for a three-year commitment, and was told my yearly rate after that time would never be more than $50. I received a bill for my annual membership dues in October 2015 with a 200% plus increase. My annual dues went from $49 to $162. I had to wait on hold for 30 minutes to access customer service and all they could do was send me a copy of my contract. I disputed the rate increase with the Better Business Bureau, and conveniently, 24 Hour Fitness waited over a month to respond to my complaint. At this time, my membership had expired. In order to prevent termination I paid $50 prior to my expiration date since I a) wanted to show good faith, and b) to prevent my membership from being terminated.
On December 9 I receive my final reply from the Better Business Bureau saying 24 Hour Fitness would not reduce my membership fees. I even had a phone conversation with the Better Business Bureau, after they suggested I send them a copy of my contract with 24 Hour Fitness. The BBB said I could go through an arbitration process. However, I decided $162 per year was still a very good rate and paid the remaining balance on December 19, 2015. On December 31st, 2015 I went to work out and was told my membership have been terminated. The assistant manager told me it was not because of late payment, but because of something else I am done. However, he refused to share any more information. I could not get a hold of the corporate office due to the holiday and the assistant manager refused to give me a one day guest pass to work out that day.
24 Hour Fitness said they are refunding my $112, a refusal of my dues payments, I guess. However, they do not plan on refunding my $50 that I paid in November. When I talked to the general manager of the Overland Park club he said I could be reinstated for a fee of $99. This is crazy! The bottom line: my guess is that since I work out on a regular basis and had a low membership rate, I am not a valued customer to 24 Hour Fitness. I'm not bringing in the cash flow that many other customers do. Consequently, they found an excuse to terminate my membership. Buyer beware: make sure you get everything in writing, and make sure contacts are clearly stated for future events. And, do not join 24 Hour Fitness!

I've gone to other 24 Hour Fitness Sports CIubs in the past without any problems, but since the Active Club I was currently working out at was closing as of October 31, 2015, I decided to ride it out after being told by a customer service rep at the check-in counter that my membership would automatically transfer over "as is" to the new gym. I even got a letter in the mail from 24 Hour Fitness stating such.
I was never advised that my lifetime annual rate would increase 100%, from $49 to $99 until I received my 2016 bill. This also explains why 24 Hour Fitness intentionally blocked me from making multiple advanced payments both online and at the check-in counter. Per the customer service reps at the gym and member services reps in the call center all members are allowed to make payments up to 3 years in advance, which I was able to do until around the time the new Sports Club gym opened. 24 Hour Fitness obviously knew they would be closing the old Active Club gym and increasing my lifetime rate so they blocked me from making additional payments which would have satisfied future years per my annual contract agreement.
I've contacted them on numerous occasions regarding the bias treatment I was receiving only to be told via email that their new payment system is not capable of transferring the funds from the advanced payment account. However, on December 3, 2015, after unsuccessfully speaking with Joseph, a customer complaint rep in the corporate office who admitted that 24 Hour Fitness was trying to recover the costs of opening the new state of the art Super Sport gym. I called customer service and they said they would rewrite my contract with additional terms. I told them they cannot change my contract and my $32.66 yearly membership because it's a lifetime membership contract. I also told them they have to honor my membership. I was put on hold for about 10 minutes and then I was told they denied my membership. I was also told if I want I can join 24 hour fitness as a new member. I have been a 24 hour fitness member for years. There are many areas that really need improvement throughout the clubs, but this whole scam of upgrading existing clubs to "super sports" is outrageous. The options for all members like myself who have all access are getting very slim, which does not reflect good business practices at all. This is all a scam to make customers paying more without any regard on customer's satisfaction, which should be the company's only priority. How is this company expecting existing customers to use the already expensive membership when there are no clubs that accept their membership.

I too was given the same bs. Signed up in 2006, was told I can go to any gym in the country, including super sport. Paid $900 for the first 3 years, then (supposedly fixed for the lifetime of the membership) for $29 a year. Got a lovely bill in the mail saying "due to new facilities, improvements, upgrades, etc, your membership will increase to $129." Called CS, and the rude lady read a script (I'm sure all of us are hearing) stating that section blah part blah states our membership can be increased from $50 to $100.
I asked her if it's possible that the rates can increase again next year, to which I replied with "how is that fair?" The rude representative ended our call with "if you don't pay up, you'll be terminated." I thanked her for threatening me and hung up. Will go into the gym to get my actual contract, I mean the original one I signed (if they can even produce that). If they do, I'm going to read the whole thing, guarantee it doesn't state the rates can increase. Good luck to us all. Let's hope we can get what we were promised.

The definition of Fraud and Financial Crime is "crimes that typically involve some form of deceit, subterfuge or the abuse of a position of trust, which distinguishes them from common theft or robbery."This is exactly the crime that 24 Hour Fitness has committed against myself and countless others, and they should be sued out of not just every penny they've stolen through fraud, but sued for interest on that money as well as the personal damage caused by their blatant deceit.
I paid an ENORMOUS one-time fee of $900 dollars for a "lifetime" membership with the contractually and orally agreed upon clause that after 3 years a $49 yearly fee would be charged. The entire reason I got the lifetime membership was for the reason that the price would NOT increase. They lied and blatantly stole my money when my bank account could not cover the new $79 dollar fee they charged in 2012.
One of the reasons I got the membership was for use of the facilities, because I backpack and travel around WITHOUT a stream of income or substantial savings and use the facility to shower and work out, etc. Well, I literally had enough money in my account to cover the $49 dollar renewal fee but NOT the new falsely imposed $79 dollar fee, and my "lifetime" membership was CANCELED.
I tried numerous times to contact their corporate office, managers, etc. but was always shunned or given a runaround. I was furious at the time and vowed to sue them for my money back, but alas I felt alone and isolated against a huge corporate monster and gave up out of despair, forever classifying my monumental investment of $900 dollars "stolen." Well, come 2015 and it looks like others have been screwed as well.

I was sold 2 "lifetime" memberships in 2007 for $1000 for the first 3 years and then $29/year each every year thereafter. I was just assessed a 240% increase in dues for next year's membership. At the time of purchase I explicitly asked the salesperson and the management if the $29/year dues would ever increase and was emphatically told "never would the yearly fee increase, it's a lifetime membership". In addition to the increase I was told that a gym that I had visited on occasion was now not included in my membership because it had a new name and I had not logged in at this gym within 6 months. Nowhere in my contract does it specify this 6 month login clause. Singling out lifetime memberships for absurd % increases is unethical, unlawful, and bad business practices.
In addition, when I asked for a copy of their contact on file at the gym they said they'd email it - it never came. I visited again and asked again for it - they said they emailed it right then; I stayed and waited. When it never showed on my phone the manager came and he said he could only pull up a summary because it was too old. I asked for an accounting of payments. He gave me the current year's payment. I've only ever had one membership with this company for me and my son, yet on the receipt it shows "expired" item fraudulently added to my account. I paid the increased next term contract by check but added that they were in breach of contract and that the payment is in duress.
I'm paying more now for much less. Lifetime is pretty clear. Obviously the lifetime doesn't refer to gym access by their own made up terms, so by elimination it must mean annual dues. I signed the online petition and will join in the future class action lawsuit. This is the last straw. I wanted to sue when they denied services based on falsely claiming that they upgraded gyms that they clearly had not - adding towels and a few signs is not a gym upgrade.

In 2008 I purchased a lifetime policy with 24 Hour Fitness for $700 for the first 3 years with the explicit intent of "locking in" a $99 renewal in perpetuity. This month, I received a letter that my rate will be changing to $149 per year. The back of that agreement has solely 1 section addressing membership increases. The section reads "24 Hour may increase your dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than 5% of your monthly dues." This is meant for people on a month-to-month rate. As far as my contract states with 24 Hour Fitness, my $99 renewal should continue.
I called customer service, the agent was rude and said "If you do not like it. Don't renew." I asked to speak to the manager, she said "he will tell you the same thing." He did! I was told that the rate increase was an "annual fee" that is being used to update and maintain all of the gyms. I searched my contract for language on "annual fees." There is none. I was told by the manager that I "didn't understand the difference" and was told that I had the option to not renew. I understand that, I told her, but that would negate my investment of $700 at the beginning to secure this rate.
I want 24 Hour Fitness to acknowledge that coining a rate increase of 100% on "annual fee" is misleading. I would like to receive my agreed upon rate of $99/year (with a 5% increase if needed, per the contract) and hope that people who put so much money up front to secure a lifetime fee would have the loyalty of their organization to follow through on long-term agreements. Changes of long-term agreements should not be reached arbitrarily and unilaterally, especially through transfer of ownership. The members are the ones who suffer through this.

They told me if I paid $500 upfront for a three year deal that I would have a annual renewal of $99 and it would not change as long as I didn't miss a payment. Today 8 years later I received a letter in the mail from 24 Hour Fitness. In this letter it stated that my annual increase has been raised to $150 and I have one month to pay it or my membership will be cancelled. This is bs. I paid my annual membership two months early and I get a letter after I paid for next year saying I owe $50 more or I don't have a membership anymore? Is this legal? I think not... Count me in on a class action.

OK so 24 Hour Fitness can raise the price because it was written in the contract that they can do that. BUT my question is why are the annual fee different for everyone? I paid about $800.00 in 2005 for lifetime Super Sport membership of about $32.00. HOWEVER they are asking me to pay 139.64! When I read the other posts I am paying a lot more! What is going on? Calling customer service but I do not have much trust in the corporation anymore. :( They just told me that it went up by 100.00 plus tax. :( It's for future improvement but I like my gym now. I did not ask for more by increasing the fee over 30%.

Like a lot of people, I paid $600 upfront and was told by doing so, I'd lock in my rate of $29 annually for life. I just got a bill saying my dues are being raised to $104/yr. Why is everyone being charged a different amount?! I think this is fraud. When you request an electronic copy of your agreement on the website, they send you one. But I'm pretty sure it has different wording as the paper copy you initially sign. I know this because it mentions Super Sports, which didn't exist at the time I originally signed. Also, my roommate was just added onto my contract two months ago, and it shows him on this contract. So I am pretty firm in my belief that this electronic copy has been modified from what I originally signed.
Additionally, I am furious at them because I lived in Honolulu, HI, for 2 years. I had to upgrade my membership at the cost of $29 per month just to use the two clubs that were in my area. They had changed the name of the clubs to Super Sport, yet they didn't even meet the requirements for a Sport level club! Waikiki had no sport courts of any kind. They did offer you a towel as you walked in, but no courts, no pool, no sauna, NOTHING. All just the same size and level of an Active club. And Kapiolani has a sport court and towel service, but no pool and no sauna. They do this to make people upgrade.
I can understand if they remodel the club and add services, but they didn't. I want a refund of those fees I paid to upgrade my membership unnecessarily, and I want them to honor my original agreement. I'm furious. I'm looking for my original paper version of the contract to find what language they have written on the back of it. I believe this company is dishonest and should be sued for fraud. I will gladly join any class action lawsuit against them.

I get Aila on the phone who gives me the perception of a totally unsympathetic individual who wants to be left alone and is offended by any complaints received about employees at her site. My beef was that Jess promised to get back to me via email on Monday.
The truth was she was out because of an illness in the family and the fact that Aila told me "She does not have her appointments written down anywhere." Aila said: "Jess ran the whole operation." So, the truth is if Jess disappears then her customers suffer as no one else knows of what commitments Jess made. My real point is that young people run the operation and consider themselves experts but lack the basic customer service skills needed to communicate effectively with their customers. The young folks make excuses instead of apologizing for their aberrant behavior.

I've been told verbally that it was guaranteed. Now, I noticed that my renewal fee is $84.00 (approximate) dollars. Now, after carefully reviewing the contract, I noticed that 24 hour fitness can raise my fees, which are printed in the small print possible. They increased my dues this year to 79 a year and claim it is to keep the gym clean when our gym is actually pretty disgusting, at least in the bathrooms.
Also, the paper towel dispensers are often empty while 3 employees sit at the front counter socializing and playing on their phones and a few days ago my friend found a random bolt on the ground that we can only assume belongs to one of the pieces of equipment. I went to my local club (where I bought the membership) to complain and was told to call customer service at 800-432-6348. I have tried numerous times to talk to someone without success. I am writing on behalf of my mother. She is an elderly Asian woman who loves watching Fox News (please put your opinions about Fox news aside. This is not about Fox news, but about having the right to watch a television stations). When she goes to the gym, she requests to have it on one of the TV screens. Recently, my mother was denied to have one TV screen for her to watch Fox news while she walks on the treadmill. According to her, there were a few employees that would not change the TV channel for her. The gym's policy is that patrons must request to change a TV station and are not allowed to touch the TVs. She was following the gym's protocol by asking, not to mention she's in her 70's. One employee told her that they could not change one TV station because of sports. Evidence to the contrary exists when other TVs are on entertainment channels.
Other employees made excuses why they could not change one TV to Fox news for her. After a few times of employees telling her that she couldn't watch Fox news, she went to the manager. The manager told her that they would not change one TV to Fox news. My mother then asked for the corporate office phone number and whom she could speak with. The manager on shift wouldn't give her the phone number and would not tell her the name of someone she could speak with at the 24 Hour Fitness corporate office. My mother had to call information to get the information she needed. She called to speak with someone and was told that the employees at the 24 Hour Fitness in Chino Hills could easily take a few minutes to change one TV to Fox news while my mother worked out on a treadmill. My mother went back to the gym and the manager was there.
She told him that she had spoken to his manager at the corporate office and that they needed to show more respect to their elderly customers. According to my mother, the manager became angry and asked her to leave. My mother said she would not leave and because she paid to be there, she felt she was entitled to use the gym. The manager threatened to call the police, and my mother told the manager to go ahead and call them because she felt that she did nothing wrong. The police came. A crowd gathered. The manager had told the police that my mother, an elderly Asian woman who simply wanted one television station changed to Fox news while she worked out, had threatened him. According to my mother, this gentleman was ** in his 30s. The police took the report, and one policeman had told my mother to go to another gym (even though she had already paid her membership to 24 Hour Fitness).
So now my mother has a police report, all because the employees of 24 Hour Fitness in Chino Hills would not change the channel of one TV for an elderly Asian woman. Personally, I don't have time to watch TV. When I visit my parents, they typically have Fox news on. However, this is an explicit demonstration of poor customer service. My mother said that she felt discriminated against because she's elderly, Asian, and a woman. All this trouble could've been avoided if the employees simply took 2 minutes to help someone. I wanted to e-mail you because this woman stood up for her rights and loves your TV station.

Just like many people on this board, in 2006 we paid $1,200 up front and were also told our annual membership would be $49 thereafter and never go up again. But, today we got a bill with 50% jump and no early notice. Also, suddenly, we could not go to another alternate gym that is close to our house due to the recent "upgrade of gym to Super Sport". We asked the front desk people what did they do to improve the gym, they said "nothing". Okay, so no improvement but the company decided to change status so we can not go to that gym anymore and closed up another gym's pool facility for a "renovation" during summer time.
I also called customer service and they told me they will put in a request to the "recently" upgrade facility manager to contact me and change our membership so we can continue to be able to use that facility. No answer from them. I guess the company is getting greedy and doing everything they can to scam people. I would like to know how many people actually renew their membership because we are thinking not to renewal with them and look into other gym's membership. Also, I encourage everyone to post on www.bbb.org. Let them answer the complaints so other people can review it.

Given what I've read, it would appear 24 Hour Fitness is strategically dumping "toxic" assets i.e. contracts not producing revenue (yours and mine). It seems some people are having fees raised a little, others a lot and other people just aren't getting billed. If they can dump enough contracts in enough ways it makes a CAL more difficult to pursue. Bottom line this company sucks at customer service. Similar story, 2005 paid for 3-year membership $750 then "lifetime" $99. They stopped sending me bills in 2013.Twice I paid it. At the check in desk both times I updated my address. WISH I COULD GIVE IT ZERO STARS!!! This review is about 24-hour Fitness' Customer Service in general. For over a year, I have been trying to get my problem resolved - unsuccessfully. I have been a member since April 22, 1993 when I purchased a "Family Keep Fit" membership. At that time there were 3 of us on that membership: Myself: Contract #**, my husband, John Contract #**, my son, Jonathan Contract #**. On July 22, 1996, I added my youngest son, Christopher -- Contract #**. His contract clearly stated that his contract was related to mine. I paid a monthly VISA charge of $19.00 ($12.67 + 6.33) for the first 3 contracts and when Christopher was added on, an additional $5.00 per month was added on to my VISA.
When Christopher tried to use his card at the Club recently, he was denied entry because they told him his account had not been paid since 2010! When I checked my credit card statements, I saw that everything was fine through 2009, however, beginning in January 2010 the $5.00 charge for Christopher's membership simply dropped off the bill. No notification was given to me at that time and I did not request any kind of a cancellation. When I talked to your Corporate Office's Member Services this afternoon, they said the $5.00 charge in January 2010 was denied. How can this be? The monthly charges of $12.67 and $6.33 went through without any problem and have continued to go through to the present time. Shouldn't I have been notified in 2010 when this was a problem?
I am not sure who to blame for this problem, but I feel their billing department should have noticed that my VISA card was good for the other charges as they are all put through on the same date and all the contract numbers are linked to one another and would have attempted to at least notify me that there was a problem. As I said, Christopher's contract clearly states that it was related to the original contract.
I had asked to have Christopher's membership re-instated. I am, of course, willing to make up the $5.00 monthly payments from the time they stopped being charged to my VISA. Corporate Office's Members Services indicated that since it had been more than 6 months since the account was cancelled, they could not re-instate it. We have been satisfied customers for over 20 years up to this point in time - I would think they would like to keep us. This should never have happened.

My gym was closed 2 weeks for renovations. I had to deal with the inconvenience of going to another gym that was way out of my way. When I came back the day after the remodel was complete, I went into the locker room to use the restroom. There was stuff in the toilet, so I flushed it. Water started flying out of the top and nearly got me soaked. After moving to a different stall, I finished my business, went to wash my hands and the hand soap was just laid out on the sink, not even attached to the wall. Then when I went to get a locker, the only area not riddled with locks, only had 4 posts where a bench was supposed to be. Normally it would be no big deal, but when you have to go out of your way for 2 weeks for so called renovations, and you come back to this, it makes you think of alternatives. My Bally's in San Leandro, CA converted to a 24-Hour Fitness in Dec 2014. My membership with Bally's was for the 2014 calendar year only, so in Feb 2015 I met with a manager (whose card I have) and negotiated a month-to-month membership for $24.99 a month. I signed the signature pad thinking it was only for the credit card charge for the initial month. I did not expect to have a contract because it was month to month. I could check the charge every month to make sure it was right. On August 9 or so I noticed a $29.99 charge by 24-Hour Fitness along with a large fraudulent charge to a Safeway 40 miles away. I thought both to be charges by other people and reported to fraudulent charges to my credit card company.
Come Sep 29, when checking in for a workout, I'm told to see receptionist, who informs me that my annual fee is 53 days late. Of course, I say I have no annual fee. She says something like there were several annual fees that were not charged and so were charged on Aug 8. I meet with a manager. I ask to see the contract, forgetting that there was no contract. He shows me the annual fee on the contract. I don't have my wallet, so he says to just pay it next time. I leave to workout, then realize that I had signed a signature pad when I signed up. I'm pretty fanatical about actually reading contracts carefully when I have them, so I'm thinking there was no contract, so I go back and ask for a copy of the contract, which the manager provides.
The upstart: The original manager who signed me up, who was gone from the gym within 3 months of my signing up, had superimposed my signature pad signature onto a 5 page contract. That contract was never shown to me before I signed the signature pad, and no copy was provided me after I left the signing. They did not provide a credit card receipt, but at the time I didn't think of it. I knew a charge would appear on my credit card statement, and it would either be right or wrong. As it was, the credit card charge showed up as $50.87, which I questioned. Turns out it was for first and last month, and a prorated 1-day charge. I did not question it because I thought it was probably discussed, but that I didn't remember the detail.
That contract he printed out is a 12-month contract, with the $330 or so price listed as financed. It includes the annual fee of $29.99, but that it would be paid on Aug 8, 2015. Besides illegally putting my signature on a contract, I question whether that contract was even generated at that Feb 24 meeting. What company would charge an annual fee not at the beginning of the year, not at the end of the year, not in connection with any calendar year, but instead 'kind of' in the middle of the year? This is also suggested by the remark the receptionist said (above) when I first questioned the annual charge.
The signature pads they use have no other text displayed. They are only an empty field to sign. Why would they use such signature pads if they are not to defraud customers in the way I have described? There is no reason not to sign a paper contract when joining at the club. If the charge is only for a credit card charge, then a receipt should be offered. Of course, the contract has various other conditions in small print. I would like 24-Hour Fitness to hurt for doing this practice, but have been advised by a lawyer friend that it likely isn't worth the time or expense for the amount of money in the fraudulent contract. I would like them not to do this practice to others, and I'd like to know if others have had the same experience. From reading on this site, it appears 24-Hour Fitness defrauds in a variety of ways.
