I have been a member since 2003. I paid 895.00 for a 3-yr. contract, trainer included. After the three years was up I was to pay 20.00 a year. I have paid my membership in advance since 2006-2013 without a problem by online bill pay through Chase bank. In 2014 I sent the payment one month early thinking I was finished. I didn't notice that 24 Hour sent my payment back. I have gone to the gym a few times during 2014 without any employee stopping me. Each visit I provided the employee at the front desk with my driver’s license and membership card with no problem.
On April 8, 2015 I mailed my payment in 2 months early. I went to the Gym on Sept. 16, 2015 and on my way out an employee stopped me and informed my membership had been cancelled. I have provided them with proof of payments and still they want to play games. My payments were returned from where I have been mailing them for the past 7 years. They changed their P.O. Box address from Pasadena to Los Angeles without notifying me. I NEVER RECEIVED A BILL IN 2014. And just mailed my bill earlier as I always had.

I signed up a contract with 24 hours fitness on 2006. The annual membership fee is $29 on the contract after I prepay around $700 for the first 3 years. Today I found that they have increased the due from $29 to $87. I'm joining the 400 people here to complain. If there's class action, count me in.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else who signed a lifetime contract after paying for 3 years upfront. I'm in on the class action lawsuit - just need info to join. I've called 3 times and have had call escalated twice and haven't had any luck with getting my normal rate of $49 a year. I'm still waiting for my original contract to be sent to me so I can verify where I initialed that I was going to accept any increases. Very shady business if they sneaked in a clause after selling everyone on a lifetime deal.

Member since 2009/2010. Paid $600 upfront for 3 years and was told and my annual membership thereafter would be $49 for life. Just got my bill and see that the bill is now $99. I'm unhappy that in multiple verbal conversations with 24 Hour management and personnel, I was told $49 for life. However, looking over a digital copy of my contract emailed to me in 2010, the contract got me and the rest of us in the same boat. Page 2: "3(c). Right to Increase Dues: If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Initial Annual Renewal Amount on page 1 of this agreement, but may increase all subsequent annual renewal amounts. 24 Hour will send you notice of your new annual renewal amount each year thereafter prior to the end of your then current term."

I also signed up in 2006 and was told I would pay only $49.99 for life and that is how much I have been paying. Now I'm being told the rate is $99??? Only reason I took this deal was because the ** management said it would be this rate for life. How can you go and change a contract like that? How would they like it if I told them I felt like paying less per month because I felt like it? Any lawsuit that is happening I am 100% in! ALSO I find it odd that my mom did this exact membership except she only owes $29 per year for life and when her renewal came today there was no price increase. So for some reason because they are "bringing in new equipment" I along with others have to pay more, but hers has not gone up? (not that I want it to) I just find this whole practice shady and I refuse to pay DOUBLE what I was paying before. I will switch gyms if they don't fix this and they will lose many clients and business.

About 2 months ago I spoke to the Club Manager and requested that my membership be cancelled after being a member for 5 years. He said that he understood my request but would rather freeze my status for 2 months in case I wanted to reactivate my status. The reason for leaving is that my dues were about 32.00 per month until about 18 months ago. At that time, I upgraded to super membership in order to go to the Auto Mall location which has a swim pool. My monthly dues then increased to 42.00 per month which is on an auto pay status. My reason for resigning is that the club staff do not circulate on the workout floor and assist members with technique or other pertinent areas that are part of body building/toning.
Today (9-26-2015) I visited the club around 2:30 PM. Receptionist informed me that there were no membership staff or club management personnel on duty. She further said she had the authority to cancel my membership but rather would report my concerns to management. I have joined another club that is more focused on teaching, observing, being available to members. The 24 Hour Fitness does not provide written programs. Members are out on their own too much and usually are sitting at the membership desks even when they are not busy. They need to have a more serious focus on health and body for members.
I have made 2 attempts in getting membership cancelled and both times I was not successful. First time, the manager was cooperative but today left me without a definitive result. I am writing this e-mail and want membership cancelled since I feel the club is too focused on sales. Once the member has joined there is no exchange of knowledge and skills that pertain to the program which is not written up. The member needs to assume this responsibility. Please feel free to call for further questions/comments. Corporate needs to be aware of my observations and possibly revisit the approach that is currently in practice.
Updated 10/7/2015 - Since September 27, 2015 when I had written my complaint that was listed below, they did cancel and stop billing my dues, finally. I very recently ran into a former employee from that 24 Hour Fitness location. Employee is no longer working there and told me that if wanted to get a "deal" at 24 Hour, the only way is to buy it through Costco and pay cash. All of the memberships at the club site are rip offs! Good riddance--Under no circumstances do I want to go back to this club. I am very happy and getting excellent results at City Fitness.

Just like everyone else here, I paid for a 3 year membership upfront at $500. Thereafter I was promised membership at any club for an ANNUAL fee of $29.00. Today I go in, and they tell me that my account had been terminated because I hadn't paid in 2 years. The thing is, I was never notified of a bill. In past years, they would often send me an email offering to renew the price at $29 which I of course immediately paid. But now they just straight up cancelled the membership. Please contact me to participate in the class action lawsuit. Who is making the phone call?

In 2007 I purchased a lifetime policy with 24 Hour Fitness for $1020 for 1 year with the explicit intent of "locking in" a $49 renewal in perpetuity. This month I received a letter that my rate will be changing to $100 per year. The back of that agreement has solely 1 section addressing membership increases. The section reads "24 Hour may increase your dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than 5% of your monthly dues." This is meant for people on a month-to month rate. As far as my contract states with 24 Hour Fitness my $49 renewal should continue. I called College Grove for comment. I was told that the rate increase was an "annual fee" that is being used to update and maintain all of the gyms. I searched my contract for language on "annual fees." There is none.
I was told by the manager ** that I "didn't understand the difference" and was told that I had the option to not renew. I understand that, I told her, but that would negate my investment of $1000 at the beginning to secure this rate. I want 24 Hour Fitness to acknowledge that coining a rate increase of 100% an "annual fee" is misleading. I would like to receive my agreed upon rate of $49/year (with a 5% increase if needed, per the contract) and hope that people who put so much money up front to secure a lifetime fee would have the loyalty of their organization to follow through on long-term agreements. Changes of long-term agreements should not be reached arbitrarily and unilaterally especially through transfer of ownership. The members are the ones who suffer through this.

Like most people who signed a lifetime membership paying an upfront large down payment for the promise of having a guaranteed yearly due. Back in 2006 my wife and I both signed up for a lifetime membership for 24 Hour Fitness Sport Clubs. We both paid $600 each for the first three years and the following yearly membership would be $30 dollars forever. That's how it was sold to us. The sale person overly emphasize the locked rate, will never go up, this will never be offered again deal, etc. of the yearly guaranteed rate of $30 for life. I remember the sale person because he kept on saying $30 dollars for life when I had second thoughts of putting down $1200.
Now I get a letter stating our yearly membership will be $100 dollars each. An extra $140 a year is not going to kill me but a promise is a promise, it's about principle. After getting the new bill I read the fine print of the contract and it does state rates may increase... blah blah blah, but the way it was sold was fraud and a lie. Please add me in the class action lawsuit. Don't waste our time fighting this individually, 24 Hour Fitness will not care. They're anticipating a lawsuit anyway.

I too have received a significant increase in my renewal notice when my original agreement stated a lifetime renewal amount of $49 per year. I called customer service and waited approximately 15 to 20 minutes to talk to someone. I was told the increase was allowed per paragraph 3(c) in my agreement. I did not have my original agreement in front of me when I placed the call.
However, I save everything. Here is the exact language in paragraph 3(c) from 2004: 3(c). "Rights to Increase dues: If you have a monthly membership, 24 Hour may increase your monthly dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than three percent (3%) of your then current monthly dues. Any such increase will not occur during the first three (3) months of your membership. Your EFT Date will not change. If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Guaranteed Annual Renewal Amount on the front page of this Agreement, so long as you remain a member in good standing." Again, since I save everything, I will look at my renewal notices and payment receipts for years 2005 to 2014 to see if paragraph 3(c) was included or if it changed. Then I will call customer service again to see what they say.

2006, signed a contract stating that I pay $700 upfront that would cover the 1st 3 yrs of membership dues, then annual membership fee would be $29 a year for life after that. I asked the sales guy if it would ever increase and was assured it would not. He said $29 for life. Today I got a bill for $79. Called and spoke with someone at the 866 726-4497 number and was told that they can increase it to whatever corporate want to. This is illegal! I don't care what the contract says in section 3c buried under a bunch of legal jargon they know you will never read. When the sales guys says, "The rate will never increase" that is a legal agreement. If someone starts a class action lawsuit please count me in. I'm going to start with small claims for now and see where it goes.

In October 2007, I made a visit to Chino Hills 24 Hour Fitness. I was told that if I paid for 3 years in advance EVERY year thereafter would only be $49 renewal fee. So of course I signed up. This week I just received my renewal notice and it states, "To ensure we're able to continue to offer you a comprehensive approach to health and fitness, it has become necessary to increase your annual renewal amount."
Not only did 24 Hour Fitness make it impossible to access this information on their app (which I was able to before) once I logged in from my computer the fee's increased to $99. I am also outraged and have already emailed them to send me a copy of the original contract. Either way I was also told this renewal fee would stay the same as long as I always paid my dues on time. If there is a class action lawsuit I would like info. I will also contact my lawyer and ask what recourse I have against this.

I received an annual renewal email from 24 Hour Fitness recently and when I went to pay, I noticed that my annual renewal went from $49 a year to $124. I called customer service and was put on hold for 30 minutes. The representative who answered explained to me that they're "making renovations" and Section 3c said that they could increase my membership fees. That's not how it was explained to me when I signed up. I was promised that if I paid upfront for 3 years, that I'd have a lifetime membership rate of $49/year.
I asked to talk to someone higher up and was transferred to "Johnny," Employee ID: **, but he sounded like just another person in the busy call center. I told him that I was concerned that there's nothing stopping 24 Hour Fitness from increasing my annual membership to $10,000/year if they decide that they need to buy a private jet for every gym location. He said that Corporate has known about this increase for years now and that I didn't have to worry about anything like that. So I asked him how long I'd have $124/year rate for and he didn't have an answer.
Johnny also tried to explain to me that the contract did not say that I'd have a $49/year lifetime membership. It says that I'd have a lifetime active membership as long as I paid every year. That didn't make any sense whatsoever. Who signs up for a lifetime membership knowing that the terms could change every year? Johnny said that I could contact corporate by writing them a letter to P.O. Box 2689, Carlsbad, CA 92018. Maybe I'd be more understanding if I was notified in advance and new guarantees were made about my new rate, but now I just feel cheated, lied to, and **. $124/year is still a great rate, but how long is that going to last? I'm apprehensive about continuing my membership.

Just adding to the chorus here that I feel scammed by 24 Hour Fitness. I bought a "lifetime" membership in 2007 by paying a huge upfront amount and was told that I would pay $49 per year after 3 years. I just received my renewal letter stating that it has raised to $99 per year. I would not have purchased this plan had I known that 24 Hour Fitness could raise their "locked in" fee whenever they wanted. How do I know that the price will not double again without warning? Even though they inserted some legalese in the contract stating that they could raise the price, doubling the price without warning seems very unethical. I can't imagine that there are many of these memberships out there. The company should just grandfather our accounts lest this become a legal nightmare for them.

Like most others I read here, I bought a prepaid membership at my local 24 Hour Fitness in 2006, the Prepaid Membership fee was $700 for the 1st 3 years, then, $49/year after that for my Prepaid Initial Annual Renewal Amount. My bill had been $53.02. At that time, it was explained to me, that the extra expense of $4.03 was taxes. This year, I received my annual renewal notice for $107.32. I have not been able to get through to Corporate, as all lines are busy with OVER 30 minute hold time. I went in & spoke with the Club Manager. We went over my contract. She explained that 24 Hour Fitness increased my dues 3% for every month for the past 6 years. I argued that I do not have a monthly contract. Anyways, she said there was nothing she could. The wording on the contract is as follows:
"3(c). Right to Increase Dues: If you have a monthly membership, 24 Hour may increase your monthly dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than 3% of your then current monthly dues. Any such increase will not be calculated during the first 3 months of your membership. Your EFT date will not change. If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Initial Annual Renewal Amount on page 1 of this agreement, but may increase all subsequent annual renewal amounts. 24 Hour will send you notice of your new annual renewal amount each year thereafter prior to the end of your current term." I was like a lot of other member who sign up for the promotion, paying $1000 for the first three year and 29 dollar after that for life. That is what the staff at 24 hour fitness told me, and did not say anything about they can increase any amount and any time they want. Every year since 2007 I pay for the 29 dollar on time. I can understand they increase the membership by 10% or max 20% but this year they increase my membership over 150%. I went to the club. The manager told me they could not do anything. I call the company and have to wait a long time for them to answer. They told me rudely that I have to pay it or they will cancel my membership. So from what I am understand is 24 hour fitness don't need to care about the agreement and just lie to member and get them sign up first and then raise their membership anytime they want. I just received a renewal notice for $299?!?!? I don't understand how they can offer me a contract price, then raise it by 50%. McCardle vs 24 Hour Fitness ruled against 24 Hour Fitness. They sold "All Club" Memberships and "All Sport" memberships. They later opened clubs and excluded those members from those clubs, requiring them to upgrade in order to use them. In California, they lost the case and were required to allow everyone access to "All" Clubs, using the dictionary definition not 24 Hour Fitness' definition. In Colorado, members with "All Club" memberships are also excluded from "Super Sport" locations. The difference in these new gyms is apparently towel service. In Colorado, these new clubs have been opened in Highlands Ranch and Parker -- suburbs of Denver. While inner city Denver still has access only to the older clubs, even with their "All Club" memberships.

Although my experience of the club was fair, if pricey for the product, my experience after I couldn't use their club has been horrendous. My family and I moved out of state, over 50 miles from the nearest club. We tried calling the club in advance to cancel the membership (about a month early) so we'd know what was needed and they could help us schedule it. We kept getting transferred to other people or told they couldn't help us. I tried going in and they said no one on site could help, I'd have to go online or call the toll free number. Online, the website was very hard to navigate to find where I could cancel and then it says "you must call to cancel." But once I called they asked for a bunch of documents that we didn't have yet and said we wouldn't be charged a cancellation fee since our new state didn't have any clubs in it.
Once we physically moved and I called back they said I'd be charged $70 plus dollars. I knew better and said "no I shouldn't be," so he canceled part of the plan for child care, requested the refund for me and told me my husband was the only one who could cancel the family account but that he'd need to FAX in documents. Once he called and had it faxed, no one reached to us. I emailed again for help explaining my frustration and situation and they said I could just EMAIL the documents. But they apparently can't read word docs because they kept saying the 3 documents couldn't be viewed and needed extra information on each page I sent over - "The documents must contain your first and last names, membership numbers ** and **, telephone number and show proof of an address out a 25 mile radius from any 24 Hour Fitness location."
Obviously, in the email they show they had our member numbers in the chain email and our full names were in the document along with addressed that were outside of a "25 mile radius from any 24 Hour Fitness location." In the 15 email correspondence including member numbers, requests for cancellations, 2 job offer letters, 1 apartment community Welcome letter (with our full names, new address and community header complete with contact information for validation of information) our request still has not been completed 1 month from moving and 2 months from beginning this process.
I am furious and want a refund for charges from this month and the last. This treatment is reprehensible! My disappointment with their service began with shortcomings of their clubs and has plunged even deeper with their awful handling of this situation. I would have considered returning to their club if I moved in range again. But now I will be sharing on Social Media how bad this was and possibly the better business bureau.

The short of my experience is this: My "LIFETIME" membership renewal just increased. Please sign the petition at change.org asking for them to honor what we were told we would get. Now, here's the novel version of my experience: I like many others prepaid for 3 years at a cost of $750 with a verbal explanation that it would renew at $29/year. I was told it would stay at that price unless I didn't pay it on time or cancelled. I got the contract in 2007 and began paying the $29 renewal price after the first 3 years. Then this month (my 6th time renewing, beginning my 9th year of membership) I received my renewal notice and it had increased to $79 for this year with the explanation that the cost of giving service and upgrading the clubs requires an increase in membership price.
In the Oceanside/Vista/Carlsbad location there are approximately 4 clubs with several more in the surrounding cities. One is a brand new Super Sport construction project at the El Camino mall. It's nothing impressive when you go inside, but it was undoubtedly very costly to finish. I prefer the other clubs in the area to it, even though they are only Sport tier. In the Sport clubs, the supposed upgrades and improvements are not noticeable. In the Oceanside location on Hwy 76 for example, their was a closure of the pool and sauna area a couple weeks ago so they could do renovations. I wouldn't personally refer to that as an improvement as much as it may have been a much needed repair.
Suffice to say, I haven't noticed any increased personal benefit from any so-called upgrades or improvements. In fact, I have inquired about getting a swimsuit dryer in the Frazee Rd location (Oceanside, Hwy 76) since I began my membership in 2007. I have been told several times by the constantly changing managers that it will never have one. It would be nice if the members had a say in what was improved based on their needs. I wouldn't mind paying for something that was actually a benefit to me.
Nonetheless, it may need pointing out again from time to time that 24 Hour Fitness is ultimately just a business and furthermore, one of the largest gym businesses in the world. I suppose it shouldn't come as a surprise that they resort to such shark-like cutthroat business tactics to maintain their profits and market share. This seems like a growth or maybe even a recovery strategy, although I'm not sure it's a strong move when their membership prices are so astronomical compared with their competitors, despite not offering any premium services to substantiate them.
It's very obvious that members come second to revenues and profits when you hear about so many negative experiences. They range from refusals to cancel memberships, "bait-and-switch" tactics by managers and sales personnel, these latest wave of renewal increased, saying they will do something (like send you a copy of your contract) but never following through, etc., etc., etc.
It's not completely clear whether what they are doing with the membership renewal prices is illegal. However, it's certainly not pleasant to be treated this way, by any company. It boils down to a decision about whether to put up with this kind of abusive treatment for the benefit of going to one of their gyms. Not the easiest decision when the alternatives are following their lead in most cases now. Regardless, I don't recommend 24 Hour Fitness to anyone as the best gym out there. Not in pricing, not in customer service, and not in gym cleanliness nor amenities. About the only thing they have going for them is the wide selection of equipment. However, that only applies at newer clubs.
Check around first if you're looking for a new gym. If anyone offers you a trial, make sure you're not accidentally signing up for a one-year contract with no way out if you decide to go somewhere else. It should be common sense for many of us by now, but be especially careful with 24 Hour Fitness that what they are saying matches completely with what is written on the contract. They are masters of saying things that are not in the contract, e.g. cancellation policies, renewal prices, temporary suspensions for medical/military reasons, etc. They are smiles and positivity on the surface, but I give them 1 out 5 stars.

24 Hour Fitness recently raised the prices on all memberships. Even the ones which they are legally abided to not increase due to the verbal agreements and assurances that were given to the people to sign up. They did not provide any previous notification which is stated in their contracts. People, like myself, were told of the price increase when we were rejected access even after paying the dues right before the increase. That was how 24 Hour Fitness decided to notify people, basically, a surprise increase.
I have called their support line and asked for a copy of my contract which, like others, were never sent out. I have tried their email and received no reply. For everyone that has had an agreement in the early 2000's, we can all bring a class action lawsuit against 24 Hour Fitness. So the way I see it, they don't have a set rules and whoever work on the front desk can denied access anytime he/she feels like it. I smell discrimination here. So we left and don't want to fight over it. And the next day I saw a guy asking for a pass and without even need to show an ID or anything she let him in just because he was with one of the member that she familiar with. So they can pick and choose all they want. I believe this is like a time bomb, someday somehow, they will get sued because of this.

My family and friends paid for lifetime contracts with 24 Hour Fitness. Our lifetime annual memberships just got increased after years being at the Agreed Contracted set Annual amount. I was told that I would only pay set contracted annual fees for all of us every year for the rest of our lives with no increase in annual dues. Also there would be NO INCREASE as long as we paid our annual dues on time. I have heard that many annual members are incurring the same problems with their annual memberships and the employees even agree that the annual increase of our annual membership is wrong and unethical. The increase has more than doubled and customer service will not let you speak to corporate management about this issue. A Legal Team needs to look into 24 Hour Fitness Annual Membership Contracts and their Finance/Accounting Department and Executive who made these changes as this is wrong and unethical!

Well, I'm writing this as I'm on hold with 24 Hour Fitness for the second time - about 30 minutes each. I'm assuming I'll have the same results as everyone else. I signed up on 09/13/2007 for a prepaid membership - I paid $538 upfront for 3 years and have had a 29.99 renewal up until this year where they raised it to 129.00, a 430% increase. Like everyone else I was told the rates couldn't be increased as long as I paid annually, which I always have. I think they would rather me cancel at the 29.99 annual rate than renew, from a business perspective. I have to say, this concerns me less than the general durability of their machines. I frequently come across machines that don't work properly and are a recipe for someone getting injured. Either way, I'm on board to give 24 Hour Fitness a piece of my mind.

In this month, one received $29 invoice, another $59, and another $99. I went to the local fitness and they said that they can't do anything about it, so I made a call to the corporate. It took more than 30 minutes to speak with the representative, and I heard the same thing as the local store.
Funny thing is that the increase amounts differ among the memberships. I asked why and she said that she doesn't know about it, but it SEEMS LIKE RANDOM INCREASE. The contract said the club wouldn't be able to raise the rate more than 1% per year. Last month they billed me $150.00 for the month, a 75% increase, wth! Around 2007 I paid 600.00 cash for a 3 year membership and 49.00 a year after that. About 5 years ago, I paid my yearly 49.00 fee before due date. I went to gym and scanned my finger and they said I had not paid. I said I did. They looked up the account and said there was some extra tax charges they added. They fixed the account. I have had to do this every year since.
I knew some of the workers in membership who really helped me out. I moved across country from AZ to MD 3 years ago. I have paid my dues every year, on time and every time have to deal with this 98 cents tagged onto my account. This does not show up on my account when I call membership and it does not show up online when I pay. It only says 49.00... not 49.98. So they add the tax or whatever that .98 cent fee is... have no idea really. I paid it online last year in 2014 and it said 49.00.
So I called the membership department. I told him the fee was not right and that the same odd cents had not shown up and that I have been going thru this for several years. He said "No you're good. Your account has been paid in full and make sure you are never even one day late on your account because they are trying to end and get rid of all these low yearly memberships of 49.00 a year for life." I said, I figured that was why I was having so much problem and I thanked him for checking my membership was ok.
That was last year and this year I went to pay online and the computer locked me out so I had to call membership and she said "Oh... so you were locked out. Ok let me look at your account." She said, "You did not pay for your full membership. You only paid 49.00 and not 49.98 so they cancelled you." I said I paid in full and I have to deal with this every year and the computer did not say anything but 49.00 when I paid in full. That is 24 Hour issue not mine. I was getting very upset because she kept saying I did not pay. Then she told me I was being disrespectful after I told her I did not want to talk to her and I wanted only a supervisor. She hung up on me. I want to file a class action lawsuit... ClassAction24.

I confirmed at the end of the call asking if I'd be charged anymore, and he said no, and I would not be able to go back into the gym starting the 12th of September. They charged me on a Friday and I did not see it until Saturday. Conveniently, they do not have their center up during the weekend nor do they have managers at the 24 Hour Fitness near me.
I had to wait until Monday to call, and they told me I wasn't eligible for a refund because I needed to dispute it the day I got charged. The girl on the phone thought it was pretty funny at how frustrated I was getting and was laughing. I had to go to my bank to change my credit card, to make sure they would not charge my account again. Like dozens of other complaints on this site, I bought a prepaid 24 Hour Fitness membership six years ago. I paid the very significant amount of $1100 for three years up front and was assured by the 24 Hour sales rep at my gym that, as long as I kept renewing my membership after the three-year prepaid period, my annual renewal rate, starting after the prepaid period, would remain at $80. That $80 annual rate lasted for a mere three years. Three weeks ago, I received a letter from 24 Hour Fitness telling me that, due to their "making improvements," my annual renewal rate would be increasing. The notification letter conveniently did not state how much the increase would be. I figured it would be a standard annual renewal amount such as 10% but definitely no more than 20%. When the renewal notice came, I was astounded to see an increase just shy of a galling 100%.
24 Hour Fitness is guilty of deceptive sales practices and extortion. I, like so many others' stories on here, were sold memberships by 24 Hour sales reps who presented the three-year prepaid membership service differently than what was stated in our contracts, and, since what the reps said to us is not in writing in any way, we have no recourse to challenge the outrageous increases that are now being levied by 24 Hour's corporate office. It's interesting that virtually every complaint on here, from people all over the country, says the same thing: the 24 Hour sales rep said my low rate would stay the same after the big up-front payment, now they're charging me 100% more than that low rate.
No one is writing in and saying they were levied a 25% increase, a 50% increase: everyone is being assessed an outrageous 100% increase. The renewal notice actually says that, if we do not pay the increased rate they are assessing, our memberships will be terminated immediately. So much for customer loyalty. What was the point, then, of paying a huge amount of money for three years up front to be treated like dirt by 24 Hour now?
The whole point of paying a significant amount of money up front was to be rewarded with a continued low rate after the three-year prepaid period, a point that was made to me very clearly by the 24 Hour sales rep who sold the membership. What incentive would any of us have had to pay that much money up front if 24 Hour was going to do what they are now doing: raping us financially by greedily abusing Article 3c of their written contract, which states that they only have to keep the low annual fee amount after year three in a prepaid membership at that rate for one year, the initial year past the three-year prepaid period?
Of course, what the sales rep stated at the time of purchase in order to make the sale (and not in writing) was the complete opposite from 3c in the written contract. Never did the sales rep say what Article 3c actually says: the low rate only has to be extended for a piddly one year. The proof is in the body of complaints on here stating exactly the same frustration. The sales rep said the low rate would stay the same as long as the membership kept being renewed each year.
As far as I'm concerned, 24 Hour Fitness has earned more than enough money in interest off the $1100 they collected from me six years ago to pay easily the 100% rate increase they want from me now. I am very angry and would like a lawyer to contact me about this situation. It is a plain case of deceptive sales tactics and contractual "gotcha" to abuse loyal customers for capitalistic greed.

I paid for 3 years in advance with the promise that - beginning year #4 - I would pay only $79 a year forever, as long as I kept my membership current. Since that time I've been paying $79 once a year in August.
In late July of 2015, I received a letter from 24 Hour Fitness telling me my annual fee is increasing to $170 and that it was due on September 9, 2015 (today is August 30, 2015). The reason presented in the letter was 'increased costs' of operating 24 Hour Fitness. Thinking this was a mistake because of the $79 promise and the new due date, I went to my club and asked about it. Front desk staff referred me to the sales manager who was not there. However, the front desk staff person told me he was aware that my situation has been happening with other members at my club and that the sales manager was able to get an 'extension' for some of the members.
I called the 24 Hour Fitness corporate office in Carlsbad, CA and asked the customer service rep to check into it. I recently received a renewal notification that states "We are constantly reinvesting in our clubs, services and team of professionals, so that we can offer a comprehensive approach to health and fitness. In order to achieve this, it has become necessary to increase your annual renewal amount effective on the due date below." How could they just increase the annual on a fixed contract? Were they not counting on having members stick around just as they bank on overselling memberships with the mindset that most will not actually make use of their membership? This is fraud!

But they did promise this forever.... and now I pay 79 dollars. They could have sent a letter explaining the change and gave some heads up. The laughable thing is the employees say it's to improve the gym. Yeah right! I'm not sure how stuff like this is allowed these days, but I guess it is... regardless poor treatment of loyal customers, as this is a very obvious bait and switch technique.

But today I renew my membership and I had to pay for $104? My cousin's membership was $29 and he also got an increase for his renewal, only $79. I asked the manager there "tell me the reason why there is a different between us?" The manager said he has the rights to increase it up. Wtf??? Why did you guys ripped me off more than 200% for increasing the renewal? Why did you guys cheat me and you guys didn't follow the contract as our agreement for the membership? I signed up with them in August of 2007 for about $600. This was a prepaid membership for 3 years and renewal rate of $49 a year afterwards. Today, I found out that my renewal fee is $162. That is a 230% increase, so I called customer service. After being on hold for 20 mins, someone answered the phone. The customer service rep told me they increase the fees due to increase of cost of business. The rep cannot provide documentation to justify the 230% increase. She just said that was the determined amount. She said that it is in the agreement that 24 Hour Fitness can increase the renewal fees. Since some people here can't obtain their contracts, I'm going to include it here.
"If you have a monthly membership, 24 Hour may increase your monthly dues once per calendar year. The increase will be calculated at not more than three percent of your then current monthly dues. Any such increase will not occur during the first three months of your membership. Your EFT date will not change. If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Initial Annual Renewal Amount on page 1 of this agreement, but may increase all subsequent annual renewal amounts. 24 Hour will send you notice of your new annual renewal amount each year thereafter prior to the end of your then current term." The legal verbiage did not mention a limit on the increase of annual membership renewals, so nothing can stop 24 Hour from just increasing the annual renewal fees by this outrageous amount.

I paid $700 for 3 years training and for that, they provided me lifetime membership benefits of $29/year after 3 years of training completed. I keep on paying $29 every year even though I rarely use this gym because I have my office gym convenient to me. After long gap, when I went this year to one of the gym, they told me my membership is cancelled because I didn't pay this years renewal fee. Somehow I didn't receive any reminder this year from them and I missed paying. As I was not using the gym for a while, so I completely forgot to pay. I told them that I am ready to pay late payment penalty and would like to start my gym again.
They told me that they cannot reinstate my old membership and I need to start new membership all over again which is instead of $29/years, now I need to pay $99 initiation fee, then pay $30 every month. I sent two letters to manager, sent multiple emails to Customer Service and called Customer Service. Customer Service's answer always remains same, that there is no way they can start my old membership again and new membership has to be taken. I didn't get any response from manager, they don't provide phone number of manager. This is really cheating and I feel like they were waiting for any of my payment to be missed somehow so that they can cancel this benefit easily. I am very unsatisfied and frustrated with this service. I am sure they can easily start my old membership if they want to.

I have been a member at this club for ten years and have seen many managers come and go. The club is at its lowest point as far as general appearance goes. It makes me question whether local management or corporate budget concerns are at fault. As you enter the swimming pool area look up to the wall, ceiling and vents - they are covered with fuzz. I have pointed this out to the latest manager twice in the past two months and gotten the same response - "I'll talk to the night cleaning crew." Do we even have a night cleaning crew? Men's locker room ceiling was painted about two years ago but the black trim over the lockers still has paint from ceiling paint smears - a quart or less of black paint, a $4.00 paint brush and 45 minutes would fix this. Bottom of hallway wall outside of locker room was patched over a month ago - no attempt to paint it.
The past two Sundays all of the soap dispensers in the men's shower room were empty. The young lady at the front desk "I'll make a note about it." As you walk out of the men's room the wall on the right has adhesive left over from old posters from two years ago, a razor blade and a little rubbing alcohol would take care of this. If you're not going to replace the broken lane divider at least move it out of the room... I realize that this club is a ** stepchild and that your first reaction is that these are all minor cosmetic things. THAT'S my point. They are not big expensive things. If your goal is to drive members to the bigger new cubs or to L.A. fitness it's probably working. When prospective members are given a tour of this club, what kind of impression do you think they get???

Similar situation... I signed up 9/2008. Paid $449.99 upfront for 3 years. Then, it was $99.99 for the following years. Never a change. In 2013, I upgraded and starting paying an additional $19.99 so I could go to the "Super Sport" gym. I was still paying the $99.99/ annually. I thought I was getting a good deal, because even with my monthly and my annual, it still was only $28 per month. And they are currently offering signups at my gym between $35/40 per month. Then, this week, I got a renewal on my annual. It was going from $99.99 to $174.99. Seriously? That is just a crazy amount of an increase. I called and spoke to the supervisor who said to read my contract. They have the right to increase on the "annual". Monthly payments can only increase by 5%. Okay, I get that you want to increase rate; but, 75% increase?
I starting asking around. I hear people are getting over 100% increases. Some are getting 300%. When I add up the increase, it looks like I am now paying the amount I would pay as a new customer. Where is the loyalty? I can't believe that 24 Hour is getting away with charging excessive one time increase that cannot be justified other than they want to raise rates. And there is no reasoning to who get what percentage and how long they have been a customer. It appears to me, the annual rate increase is based on how much they need to increase you to what is the current club rate. There should be a class action lawsuit on this. It is unfair to charge unexplainable, excessive, and no justification to a rate increase.

Columbia Tech Center, Vancouver WA - The current manager with the support of the regional manager has been harassing and bullying members who work out together by making false claims that they are in violation of the contract. As the contract only states that outside paid trainers may not use 24Hour gyms for their business, which is reasonable, no one is in violation of this clause because no one is being paid or receiving any compensation for working out with other members. One person's membership has already been terminated and another has been threatened with same along with claims that an investigation is in process.
Also, the manager has told several members that they has been placed under surveillance for several months to see if they are acting as trainers. The only reason given is that management has a "perception" that unauthorized training is being performed. Complaints have either been dismissed or ignored. Several online complaints about this manager are simply referred back to the same manager by customer support.

Despite their fingerprint system and my ID card. After twenty minutes the manager finally quit web surfing and decided to help the minimum waged gum chewing young lazy fat thing at the desk. He found my record finally. Said I had been terminated six years ago. I told him to please sort this out and I'll be back later. Now the story changed to I had just been terminated last week because I had not paid my dues in June! I said "That was crazy and even if you were to require me to pay in the middle of a term you should send notification." He said they sent snail mail. I said I never received it.
After a little more back and forth he came up with an address hundreds of miles away in a place and town I've never lived. I then asked why no email notification. Since they bombard you with email all the time. His reply was because I wouldn't be able to pay via email!!! He said there was nothing he could do and to call HQ. I emailed HQ and in a week they finally got back to me. Stating it was up to me to pay when I received the notice and that they could get me on a one time deal of only $500 a year! I replied that it being their mistake they should fix it. Again they ignored and said the only thing they could do would be to charge me $500 a year. Well I told them I'd write my experience up everywhere I could. As if they cared.
Originally I thought they had just lost my record. But writing reviews I see many people being forced out of their old payment plan. The company seems to want to make more money and they have a thief at the top with no morals or accountability. Since the gyms are mostly a network of dingy smelly strip-malls with minimum waged employees that hate their jobs they don't deserve more than what I was paying them. They didn't give me an agreement to review but since they were a big company so I trusted them. Now I know I was cheated when they raised my annual fee by over 100% this year.

Add me to the long list of folks on here who have been deceived and who should be eligible for legal action. I too have had for at least 10+ years a lifetime contract at $49 a year. There was no disclaimers and I was too, told verbally it was for life as part of the sale to sign-up for $800 when I lived in California. The reality is am I going to hire an attorney for $50? No, can I find a cheaper membership for the year than $100 a year? Probably not but that is not the point. The point is this is a 100% price increase that is illegal and they probably know it. If there is an attorney willing to take on this case for a broad based class action count me in. My 24 hour gym in Scottsdale, AZ is a dump and has not been renovated in 30 years. Where this money is going in beyond me. Trust me if I saw some renovations I might be more apt to say "fine, the money is going somewhere that will improve gym and my experience there." Like many others I signed up for the life membership deal. I signed up on September 1, 2008. It was me and another friend, $1100 for both of us for 3 years, then $99 renewals yearly after that. Forever, or so I understood and through from what the recruiter told me. So $550 for each of us to fork out to start. Shady part was the recruiter didn't say that $200 of that $550 was going to 4 trainer sessions ($50/session). They just gave us 2 sets of papers to sign, but little did we know, we were enrolled (and paid) for 4 trainer sessions we did not want or need. Now, I looked at my renewal contract that came home today and it's $149.99 instead of $99. I can't find my original contract so I can't even find the clause that says lifetime membership for $99/year after the initial 3 years. So much for holding your end of the contract, 24. I am disappointed and would imagine so many others feel the same way.

They cheated us. For having paid thousands upfront for training etc. back in 2007 we were supposed to have $29/yr indefinitely and get grandfathered into the super sport when our gym changed into one. That's what we were told. So far so good for me, not so good for my wife. They got her out of her $29/yr and took away super sport which she had for a while. Now we can't workout together. Customer service is horrible. They all point the finger at someone else in the organization.
I've been trying to get a hold the club manager for ages. Have stopped by the gym numerous times, called corporate numerous times, wrote a letter to corporate which never got answered. I strongly suspect they are all lying about, just giving me the runaround. The first time you ask to speak to a manager some 25 year old twit steps up and says "I'm a manager! How can I help?" only to give you the runaround and refer you to corporate etc. This sucks. Now I need to find a new gym. If you aren't willing to give the customer what was originally agreed then don't agree to it!

I've been a member for a few years now and quite frankly it's because it's the closest gym in my vicinity. In any case, I tend to go to run, use the machines, and sometimes do the classes; mostly run and use the weights. In any case, each time I go I like to use the dry sauna either before or after my workout to relax as it helps my sinuses plus I can zone out before I head back to my busy day. It never fails, it's usually busted. I swear that thing 85% of the time it's broken. I left 3 weeks ago on a work trip for a week, got back; still busted. I left 2 days later for a week on vacation, got back on 8/1 went to the gym 8/4... it's still busted. I went up to the front desk to ask them if it was still broken and the guy at first had no clue then said he thinks they ordered the part and it may be a few more weeks then followed it with an "I'm sorry."
This is so frustrating because I pay for what they sold me and that was an entire gym meaning that I could use all or none of it at my discretion and when things break as often as this thing tends to break, at some point you start over. My time at the gym is money when I go because that is what I pay for, so at some point you have to ask yourself, "Is it worth paying for something if you're not getting everything you were sold on?" It's not every once in a while - it's most the time and it's not like it's multiple rooms like the machines, it's 1 room. This is unacceptable to me as a consumer and someone who values their time at the gym and their money spent on everything I consume.

Signed my wife and I up for three months while we were working out of town; was told by membership rep. to pay the sign-up fee of X amount, then first + last month and that was the cheapest way to go. When I called to cancel a couple months later I was told I could have saved a lot of money by paying each month separately and avoided any sign up fees; basically just a cheaper option that the club employee conveniently chose not to offer.
When I cancelled on July 29, I was told that my membership was paid through the end of September because I paid the last month up front + the most recent monthly charge had just been processed. I told them I was calling in July to cancel at for the end of the next billing cycle, per any other normal humanly-ran operation. 24-hour rep failed to understand the absurdity of paying twice for one month or being billed through two months in advance. Summed up: 24 Hour got me on both ends: lied about packages and pricing options when I signed up, then forced me to pay twice for the last month I was in town. Stay away. Plenty of other options for gyms. No need to do business with liars and scammers like these guys.

I paid upfront for my membership and got it at a great price, all of that was great and fair. Where I made my mistake was signing up for the kids' club on auto pay. I recently moved up to Alaska and therefore do not have a 24 Hour Fitness gym. I called my gym and cancelled the kids' club due to the upcoming move. I was told by the employee that she would cancel the membership and there would not be any further charges. I asked if there was anything else I needed to do. She said no and that it was noted. I since moved to Alaska, bought a house, started a new job, got my kid into a new school, and got settled. As I've been pouring over statements, I see that I'm still being charged for the kids' club. I tried to call the customer service number but they are only open restricted hours and with the time change, by the time I get off work, they are closed.
I finally had a day off and was able to call and now they will will only refund one month. I have 4 months of charges $72 from their kids' club even though the employee assured me it was all taken care of. The customer service says this is all they can do due to them only just now hearing about it. Since when did the customer start getting financially penalized for employees not doing what they say they are doing and for their customer service hours being so limited?? This is a note to self, lesson learned, and warning to others... NEVER DO AUTO-PAY for anything!!! Don't ever give them access to your finances because it will be abused. On another note and the real kick in the butt, due to the restricted hours of the kids' club, we never even used it during our membership!

He has requested a copy of his contract via 24 Hour Fitness website. This caused me concern regarding my own prepaid membership which began in 2007. Mine was a bit different than his and I began paying an annual renewal fee of $29 in 2010.
Sure enough the contract states "3(c)... If you have a prepaid membership, 24 Hour will not increase your Initial Annual Renewal Amount on page 1 of this agreement, but May increase all subsequent annual renewal amounts." Who really reads 6pt 8 1/2 by 14 document in full? Dirty, Dirty, Dirty business - the salesperson specifically told me the renewal fee was for life. First of all I'd like to quote the person who in an earlier blog cited the fact that managers are hired after being let go from McDonald's. At least that's what it appears to be in this facility. It was opened as a Super Sport and suddenly, in April 2015 the towel service disappeared and we were told the club was no longer a Super Sport. The grout in the men's shower and the partitions between the stalls is caked with scum. The equipment is never cleaned and the floors are filthy. At least half of the stability balls are leaking air to the point they are no longer usable. The club manager does nothing but sit in the office and when asked why things are so dramatically different that "that's the way it is, due to new ownership" and then he only follows orders.
I too paid $850 in 2004 covering dues for a three-year period following which the annual dues would be $49. I have not yet received my bill for the next year which is due in Sept. 2015 but, will consider legal action should the price be increased as my contract states. If this is the manner in which the new management desires to conduct business then it is time the BBB becomes involved plus state departments involved in the manner in which a business is treating it customers. Furthermore, though local people refuse to disclose who upper management is I have discovered that the new CEO is Mark Smith, the Pres. is Frank Napolitano and Sr. VP for "Club Experience" is Ryan Berk all of whom I intend to send a copy of this blog via USPS.

In 2007, I entered into a membership contract which required an upfront payment of $700 for the first three years, with the promise of $29 for each year thereafter. In July of 2015, the Company breached the contract and increased my dues to $79. I visited my home club in La Jolla CA and was told that I needed to speak with the corporate customer service department to "get the issue fixed." I called the customer service line and was on hold for 1 hour before anyone answered. I spoke with a customer service agent and her supervisor. Neither provided sufficient reason for the rate increase. Their argument seems to be some technicality in the contract that the portion that says "rate increases above 5% are not allowed" only applies to customers that pay dues monthly (which is ridiculous... Why would that be in an annual agreement unless it was specifically positioned to deceive the customer?).
Further, the supervisor hung up on me mid-conversation at exactly 5 pm...the time the line shuts down. I called my home club manager and was told that he could not help me or take ownership of the issue to follow up on my behalf with customer service because the club personnel and rest of the company "do not have much contact." I am left with no recourse but to pay the increased dues. Buyer beware, 24 Hour Fitness practices deceptive sales tactics and in my opinion does not honor their contracts.

So, for myself, I'm completely satisfied and hopeful I will remain so at each yearly renewal date.
Nonetheless, I feel for those of you who have been unable to get your contracts honored as verbally promised. No doubt this was an intentional subterfuge that involved salespeople misrepresenting --perhaps unwittingly --24Hour Fitness real plans to raise rates on annual contracts. I'm sure many/most of you complaining here were told the same thing I was. Luckily I got those telling me to write out and sign their verbal promises.
My contract states these people had no authority to make these promises. But, no doubt, 24Hour Fitness sees it would be hard to dispute the hanky-panky in court with those of us who have written documentation. I would still support a class action suit with the evidence of my example. Bally's broke their renewal promises, and that made me more wary of 24Hour. But still, I need to remember to read everything thoroughly before signing
Original Review: July 20, 2015
In August, 2007, I paid a gargantuan sum for a 3 year contract with 24 Hour Fitness because it contained a guaranteed lifetime annual renewal rate of $29 thereafter. That all has worked according to plan until this year. The contract does allow for rate increases of no more than 3% beginning in the 5th year. At a 3% rate of compounding after 4 years, $29 would have grown to no more than $33.62. I have always paid $29. This year I received an annual bill for $79 which I thought was a mistake. But their phone stooges say it is not. They've re-organized, they've built new clubs & bought new equipment, and yada-yada. Total nonsense. Then I was given a fax number to call at their corporate offices because "corporate doesn't have a phone where you can speak to someone."
Because of my experience with Bally's, I looked askance at this contract originally and was given further written assurance by two different 24 Hour Fitness club managers that the annual renewal rate would be $29 as stated in the contract. They both said they had never seen the 3% increments added on. My position is that I would welcome a class action lawsuit that seeks damages against this corporation. I would like to see their corporate officers brought up on criminal charges if they can be found, prevented from engaging in any for-profit business activity for life, and confined at home to watch Biggest Loser reruns. Please inform and include me in the lawsuit that should develop from these accumulating comments.

Earlier this year, I opened a 24 Hour Fitness membership for my wife. We chose a particular facility because she is disabled and needed a heated indoor pool. We paid for 6 months in advance. A few days after opening the membership, we found out that the facility was going to be closed for several weeks for renovations. The manager apparently could not do anything for us except give us a corporate phone number, and the company's position was that there were other 24 Hour Fitness facilities in the Metro Area (none of which with a heated indoor pool was anywhere near us). After a couple of calls to the corporate offices, they agreed to put our account on hold until the facility was renovated. When that was done, I called and re-activated our account.
Since we had paid for 6 months in advance, I verified that monthly payments would not begin until OCTOBER of this year. This morning, JULY, I saw that a payment had been taken from my account without authorization. Not only that but it was against a card I HAD NOT USED! When I came to this forum, I immediately saw the information about the price increase which we had NOT heard about, and I am now convinced that 24 Hour Fitness will do anything to get your money. Received a letter stating that they were increasing the dues to $99 per month. Really didn't bug me that much, still a good deal. My account is on auto-pay and they then cancelled my membership after debiting the $19.99 per month. I went in 5 days after they terminated it.
After going through this with the manager for their Super Sport facility the manager, informed me the auto-pay only pays the monthly membership, not the annual one. I told her that regardless, it seems like there would be a grace period. She retorted that I had been given SIXTY DAYS to make a payment and insinuated that I did not keep track of my finances. Overall, she was rude, dismissive and made me feel that my patronage for the last 7 years did not matter.

I am writing hoping somebody can advise how best to go around this problem in the club located at 336 North Sunrise Ave., Roseville, CA 95661. For the last two months probably because of the management changes during evening shift the switched to broadcasting rap radio station at all times. A lot of songs contain profanity and overtly vulgar, degrading depictions of women theme broadcasting non-stop. Even some rap songs may not contain profanity, the overall gangsta-type "philosophical" pearls of the lyrics does not extend the educational level of mentally demented 12 years old. I definitely do not come to club after work to listen to that.
Also I tried to use headphones not to hear all that. They lately have ambiance music too loud, so it is almost impossible not to hear it. I know that several members try to talk to shift managers about that problem, but nothing was done, in contrary, seems like they switch to rap only stations for the last month. I wonder if these practices even lawful in California. 24 Hour Fitness is a public place with members of all genders and ages including kids starting 12 years old of age (I believe younger children in Kids Club are also listening to those rhymes), so broadcasting songs containing profanity, and mostly extreme controversial messages regarding women maybe against the law.
In anyway, I would prefer that matter solved somehow without involving legal complains, but I was not able to find and contact information for 24 Hour Fitness corporate office, and seems like there is no point to complain to shift management as they created the situation at first place and did not respond to other members complains. I know at least one person, my co-worker, who I invited, decided not to sign up because of that, and I also think to change the club and have to drive to Citrus Heights now, but hope corporate management can do something to prevent shift managers to transform the Roseville fitness club into manager's private rap night club during evening shifts.

Like everyone, when I signed up with 24 Hour Fitness I entered into a contract with them. Our contract is that we pay them $ and they provide us with facilities and equipment to work out in a clean/safe environment. It has come to my attention that the policy of 24 Hour Fitness is to breach our contract when it serves them financially. Nothing in our 'contract' provides that trainers working as employees for 24 Hour Fitness, earning an additional +/- $80/hr to train people, have a superior right to use the equipment over myself or other members. In fact the 'rules' published by 24 Hour Fitness specifically provide that the equipment is for everyone to use and that you cannot monopolize any equipment, that you must allow others to work in on the equipment.
Instead of allowing us to use the equipment we are routinely confronted by employee/trainers working the floor, monopolizing sometimes as many as 9 separate pieces of equipment for 30+ minutes at a time. For example, these trainers (wearing their red 24 Hour Fitness shirts) will move to a weight bench or squat rack with their exercise balls, dumbbells, and curl bars, and allow their clients to place their gym bags near the equipment (another violation of 24 Hour's rules) and monopolize it. When myself and others have attempted to work out on the rack or bench which is not in use by these trainers, we are told we cannot, that they are using it, when they are not.
When this is brought to the attention of other employees and management, we are told that the trainers have superior right to the equipment. I have even had a trainer threaten to call security/police. I have been required to cut my workouts short to have meetings with 24 hour management under threat of being ejected/arrested if I refused to meet with them. These meetings are nothing more than harassment. When 24 Hour rules and the terms of my contract are pointed out to management, they have no explanation, except that 24 Hour Trainers have a superior right to use the equipment. When I have inquired of 24 Hour management if members can monopolize the equipment just as their 24 Hour cohorts are doing, I am told we cannot.
I have recently had a 24 Hour manager offer to terminate my membership (of course without refunding my money) if I was unhappy. My response was that I was very unhappy, but they could kick me out and I would sue them. What 24 Hour Fitness is doing constitutes an ongoing breach of contract and fraud on its members, who merely want to use the equipment they have paid to use. What they are doing is creating a hostile atmosphere where members’ rights are subordinate to 24 Hour employees, who should be there to enforce the rules not break the rules.

Fast forward to yesterday, when I received a email stating that they need to increase my dues. I called the number in the email and they said that my new yearly dues are now $149. I have been a 24 Hour Fitness member since 2004. In July of 2006, I bought a Prepaid Membership for $699.81. I paid no membership dues for 3 years, and then the annual amount was $49. This month I received my renewal notice and the rate has MORE THAN DOUBLED. Member Services said there is nothing they can do.
So I informed corporate of my complaint: "The dollar value increase is immaterial, but the corporate value driving it is inexcusable. Either the company's decision-makers underestimated the fallout from this change or they truly do not care if their customers are outraged. I expressed my disgust with this policy that deliberately targets the group of customers who -- candidly -- may not be the most profitable, but certainly are the most loyal (and as such, are the most likely to share their experience with others). This change shows that the company's leadership has absolutely no regard for the satisfaction of its most dependable customers."
"If 24 Hour Fitness is the type of company that puts profits over people, views its members as disposable, and values acquisition above retention, then this rate increase conveys that message loudly and clearly. (And, in turn, members -- like myself, who have been customers for over a decade -- will be certain to relay that message to others, affecting new membership sales)."

I've never heard a "lifetime membership" change in price, let alone at this rate. This is saying they are all of a sudden quadrupling in price. I purchased a lifetime membership from 24 hour Fitness in February of 2000 for approximately $800 and $12.41 per month. The contract was made in California, but after moving to Florida around 2005 I discovered there were no facilities nearby. Due to unforeseen circumstances I now temporarily reside in Maryland, where I have found a nearby 24 hour fitness facility. After visiting the facility on July 3, 2015 I had no problem gaining entrance, but on July 4, 2015 I was told my lifetime membership was not valid. My membership was for the "ALL CLUB SPORT PLUS" and not the "ALL CLUB SUPER SPORT" and in order to gain access I would have to upgrade my lifetime membership and would have to pay an additional fee of $15 per month, which would be $27 for this supposed lifetime membership that was already purchased.
The 24 hour fitness manager stated that there were no other ALL CLUB SPORT PLUS facilities in the area. I was initially told I would be able to use any 24 hour fitness facilities except for the Ultra Sport, which is located in Irvine, CA. Then they add Super Sport level then change all the Sport plus to super sport and any new facilities that are built are automatically Super Sport. They wanted to build more facilities and intentionally added another level (Super Sport) to avoid honoring all of the lifetime membership purchases. They will do so again to void out all the super sports lifetime memberships. I have just emailed 4 attorneys to see if I have any options.

1. Purchased 3 year Prepayment for $800 around June 19, 2006. (Reason I remember, it was a Birthday Gift I paid half, mother paid half.) A) Was verbally promised a 3-year membership with a $29.00 annual renewal membership to all 24 Hour Fitness all sports or lower clubs nationwide as long as my account stayed in good standings. B) Signed the contract.
2. Received a notice in the mail June 18, 2015 (9 years later) saying, "Thanks for your continued membership with 24 Hour Fitness. We are constantly reinvesting in our clubs, services and team of professionals, so that we can offer a comprehensive approach to health and fitness. In order to achieve this, it has become necessary to increase your annual renewal amount effective on the due date below. With member benefits such as our health and fitness consultation, group exercise classes, a wide variety of strength, cardio and functional training equipment and our free digital magazine, 24LifeTM, we will continue to deliver the best value for your membership." A) Due Date: 07/24/15 Amount Due: $79.00.
3. Promptly called 24 Hour Fitness membership services and was given this information: A. Informed the contract signed was a promise for 3 years and only guaranteed that the first renewal cost would be $29.00. B. Informed there was a clause that states that dues may/or may not be raised at any time after the first year. C. This clause was put into effect at around May of 2006. D. Members who have purchased before legally cannot be effected by the new price increase. E. All sports members and below - $50 increase. Super Sport and above - $100 increase.
Opinion/Analysis:
This price hike irritates, frustrates, and infuriates me as a 9-year customer of 24 Hour Fitness. In my honest opinion, Bamboozled, Bait and Switched, Hoodwinked all describes what 24 Hour Fitness is pulling here. I'm not exactly sure how legal this is but just because it is legal does not make it right. For years I have been of the belief that 24 Hour Fitness has been constantly trying to weed out the loyal long term annual buyers. (Especially since the new acquisition/buy out)
For example, I've been told from many colleagues that they have not received notices to renew their annual contract and by the time they realize this, it is too late. Monthly $30-$40+ memberships is all 24 Hour fitness has to offer them. Furthermore, I've noticed a closing in all sport or active sport clubs. A few months later they are all of sudden reopened super sport clubs that certain members no longer have access to unless they upgrade to a monthly membership. In my opinion 24 Hour Fitness (and I'm sure their team of lawyers) have finally found a way to in effect get rid of the annual members. This year it was a $50/$100 (all sport/super sport) increase. (Depending on membership) What will the hikes be next year? The year after? What stops them or happens when annual renewal is $480 a year? ($40/month)
All I want is the contract that I agreed to and was verbally promised and what I thought was legally promised 9 years ago. So as for what I will do? I having an active lifestyle will grin and bear it and pay the $79.00. Even though I am very angry by the situation overall, at this current time it is still a relatively decent deal compared to going elsewhere. I am going from approximately paying $2.42 per month ($29.00 annually) to effectively paying $6.59 per month ($79.00 annually) That still doesn't take away from the fact that this whole ploy 24 Hour Fitness is doing doesn't at all sit well with me.
Although I am ignorant in the matter of legal laws and corporate business nor have the funds to go legally fight this; I'm hoping that this reaches someone with some legal background in these types of cases. An absolute relentless shark that would not mind aggressively going after 24 Hour Fitness or perhaps some class action lawsuit may be started/filled. Hopefully this information has shed some light, informed, or helps start a case. I'm sure I cannot be the only one outraged by this.

I joined 24 hour fitness in 2007 and like the others, I paid 3 years of full yearly price in advance, but in return, I was supposed to have a $29.00 yearly due for the rest of my life. I didn't believe the salesperson at first and made him repeat that the price would not go up for the rest of my life. That broke down to only a little bit more than $2.00 a month! My wife and I both signed up for that reason alone.
Fast forward to 2015 when I notice my yearly dues have been increased to $79.00. When I called 24 hour fitness corporate offices, they told me that there is a clause in the contract that allows them to raise prices, even if it's a lifetime contract. How is it a lifetime contract if you can raise the rates? The salesperson assured me that it was $29.00 a year for life! They even acknowledged that it was supposed to be lifetime, but costs have increased and dues needed to be increased and will likely be increased in the years to come. Also, my other friends have not had their rates increased. When I asked the representative, she responded that people are randomly selected, based on their visits to the gym and type of membership they have. That statement in itself makes no sense. Arbitrarily raise one member's rates and not another? Total scam. I'm waiting for the class action lawsuit.

I signed up for 24 Hour Fitness in 2006. I paid $600.00 to receive my membership at $29.99 annually for life. Now it more than doubled to $79.99 annually. I would encourage all members to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. This might not seem like much however for each of our complaints filed with the BBB the 24 Hour Fitness will have to explain each complaint when trying to get a loan. It will also hurt their chances of getting a loan. Each complaint results in a lower score for the business, you could equate this to a credit score having late payments. Over time it lowers your score dramatically. The same can be said for filing complaints against 24 Hour Fitness. If dissatisfaction is high enough this can mortally wound them. I have read about this price increase and it seems it's due to ownership change. Even though a business can do what it wants and charge what it wants it can also be sued.
If enough complaints are seen maybe 24 Hour Fitness can be sued again like it was 10 years ago (give or take 5 years). For those unfamiliar with 24 Hour Fitness there was a class action lawsuit filed against them in southern California by 5 members: McCardle vs. 24 Hour Fitness Class Action Lawsuit. This lawsuit was settled and you didn't have to do anything if you are still a member of 24 Hour Fitness to get the membership upgrade. If you entered into a membership contract with 24 Hour Fitness at a club in California either: (1) before October 1996; or (2) between October 1996 and October 1999 using 24 Hour contract version v9.96 either (a) with an "All Club (Premier)" benefit or (b) at a Northern California club, you may be eligible for a benefit from this class action settlement.
I found some more information from another member who has the details of that lawsuit. FYI a business can put whatever they want in a contract but that does not mean it's legal. Five individual members of 24 Hour Fitness USA, Inc. ("24 Hour") in California have sued on behalf of 24 Hour members in similar circumstances ("Class Members"), alleging that they have wrongfully denied access to certain higher-level 24 Hour clubs. 24 Hour denies that is has done anything wrong. The five members and 24 Hour decided to compromise and settle the lawsuit. If your membership was continually in force, you now have access to "All 24 Hour fitness clubs!" Hooray!

I have been a member of 24 Hour Fitness for only a few months, and I must say it has been quite a ride. Let me start off by saying I work out mostly over nights (11pm-4am) with a variety of friends and family that I so foolishly convinced to sign up for memberships. And now, from the beginning, my experiences to date:
When my girlfriend and I signed up with **, the gym "pimp" (of whom I will reference a little later), we were promised the best gym experience, all that is gold, etc, blah blah BS. It wasn't an entire week before the polish on this ** of a gym wore off. We experienced broken "Brand New" equipment to inconvenient down times of certain amenities to horrible customer service all within the first week... and even still, my girlfriend and I decided to give it a chance.
One night, I went into the locker room to get ready and there were men's boxers full of fecal matter splattered across the floor. Not only did everyone notice it and bring it to the attention of the facility "manager on duty", one of the sales guys walked in and saw it himself. I reported it, as well, and was met with "Oh Wow! I'll have that cleaned up ASAP - cleanliness is of the utmost importance at our gym." 2 hours later, I went back into the locker room to change and it... was... still... on... the... floor! I went back and addressed this matter with a couple of the guys (** being one of them) and he said he didn't hear anything about it. It was clear to me based on the reaction of the guy I personally told that he never made anyone aware of this.
As I stated before, we work out during late hours of this 24 hour facility... but every time we go to use the steam room or dry sauna, it's either closed from 1AM-4AM or it's broken. This, in my own routine, is a vital step to my progress. No one ever has any answer when we ask when the amenities will be fixed... only "Sorry, man. It just happens."
As mentioned earlier, I got 3 people to sign up for memberships and this gym was running a refer a friend and get a shirt promotion. The first two friends actually received their shirts on their first visit after they signed up, but when I tried to get mine, I was always given the run around.. I was even promised by two of the overnight guys that they would leave a note for the manager to make sure they set aside a shirt for me. Nothing ever happened. (Now, let me be clear; the shirt itself isn't that important to me. It's the follow through, the promises [or the breaking of] that truly chaps my butt.)
I have brought quite a few people in over night with me as visitors with no resistance or any issues whatsoever. They started trials on the kiosk provided and were allowed to work out. Tonight, I brought my younger brother and my nephew (both over 18) that traveled across the US to visit me and they were denied any access to the gym. When I questioned the receptionist, I was told it was policy that no one without membership can gain access to the gym... which is fine if that actually is a policy. However, this has never been an issue in the past 4 months and it is all of the sudden? No consistency. I was told I could sign them up or add them to my plan... which would've cost the same amount for them to sign up on their own. Where is the logic in that? I decided to pick up my bag and leave.
When I left tonight, that gym "pimp" I told you about was outside in the parking lot talking to one of his many "girls". I tried to get his attention, but he said "I'm talking to my girl right now, I ain't working." I get that; but this is the same guy who promised me such a beautiful experience with this gym. Now, he wants to back pedal. It's fine. I drove off and he mouthed something to me, and instead of returning "fire" per se, I went back into the gym to inquire about cancelling my membership. I was told that I had to wait for the managers to deal with anything regarding memberships... I said "Just 5 minutes ago, you were so quick to help me sign these two up... and now you can't help me cancel?" He said "Sorry, man."
My company has a discount program where we send our clients to this gym specifically when they are in town, 8 of the people that work with me have memberships here as well. My mission is to have these guys and gals leave this crap gym and join a competitor just down the street... how will I do this, you may ask? I'll pay for every one of their enrollments if I have to just as long as they don't get caught into the trap they call 24 Hour Fitness.

I go to an active gym that is close to me but have super sport gyms opening all around me. The maintenance at all the clubs is not very great but active and sport clubs are falling off more now with the super sport clubs popping up. Recently about a year ago my gym did a little remodel and we were all able to go the new super sport while they did the remodel at the old gym.
After the remodel they were charging $19.99 for me to add super sport to my membership. Thinking it was potentially worth it to add I started paying the extra to add super sport status to my account. After awhile I decided to cancel the membership add on because the gym was too far so I'm back to paying the $99.00 annual. Recently another super sport opens up. I stop in with my girlfriend who is on my account paying 29.99 per month. Thinking we could go in and work out and check the gym out once or twice to see if it was worth paying the extra for we were stopped and treated uncomfortably at the front. They told me that a day pass was $25 per person at first so $50 to work out. No smiles no service period.
They made it seem like they definitely wanted to get rid of the people who took advantage of the annual contracts. They now want to charge me $39.99 additional per month to upgrade my membership. They basically are charging me what it would cost anyone to join. Since we already spent time there wrapping my head around this screwing of me and what was a good membership at one point we decided to work or for $20. We found out it was ten extra not twenty dollars. Anyways, because of the lack of customer service and because their aggressive angle on it I'm going to add LA Fitness for $100 start up and $29.99 per month. I would have had no problem upgrading my membership for $19.99 but 40 bucks additional and the specific targeting of annual members like me doesn't make me feel good about it and you're supposed to feel good about this investment.

I went to pay the annual membership this month and it had increased nearly 100%. This is markup and inflation at its best/worse. Corporate was of no assistance as to what warranted such an increase. They did give some babble as to upgrading facilities. Upgrades should not be at the expense of the member as other new gyms are already offering these options at a rate lower than 24 hour fitness. In the renewal letter they state it has become NECESSARY to increase my annual renewal amount to 139.32? due by 06/28/2015. Can they do this? They tried to raise it a few years ago and about a week later I received a retraction letter. I've kept my end of the deal and they have already banked on my dues upfront years ago at no fault of mine. If their cost have gone up it's not my problem and if the show was on the other foot I'm sure I couldn't call them to say "I'm a little short this month can you let my dues slide?"

I opened a "lifetime" account in 2007 by paying for 3 years in advance ($800 prepayment) to have a $29.99 annual fee after for my lifetime. Recently, my annual fee increased significantly to $79.99, even with inflation rate would not equal to my increased rate. I contacted customer service, and spoke to Supervisor as well as Associates multiple times, but they all said they can't do anything about the price increased as the agreement it says in fine print that they have the right to increase the price at any time with no limit. This is false advertisement and misleading as their sales representative had verbally offered that my annual fee would be fixed for life. I trusted the 24 Hour Fitness because they were considered high profile company, but now I am very disappointed on their business operation. Do not join 24 fitness, they are dishonest and will mislead you to signing up with them.

I joined in 2007 for a $700.00 fee for 3 years and $29.00 per year afterward. I just received a bill for $129.00. After calling customer service I was told I failed to read the small print in my contract and that I was "only being charged the equivalent of $8.00 more per month." I explained that when I was sold the membership I was presented with several options, choosing to make the large down payment in exchange for smaller annual payments in the future. I told them a 4 time increase is difficult to justify even with small print. This is classic bait and switch. Stay away from 24 Hour Fitness or you will likely be burned as well.

The janitors soaks the floors in the whole locker rm. with soap water, that includes the bath rms, and shower areas, and just leaves it there. I guess to dry itself. We both payed $99.00 annual fee after. This year, my annual fee was increased up to $149.00; however, my sister wasn't. I came and talked to a membership manager at Hollywood 24 Hour Fitness. She told me that there was a point in the agreement so no one couldn't change it even if I wanted to call the 24 Hour (super) manager. She told me that they will increase it once a year which means it will be increased more next year (unlimited). She told me that "If you don't like it, then cancel it, open a new one and pay higher fee." What kind of business is it? Is that the way their staff should talk the customers? Is that weird when we are both under my membership but the agreements were different?

I purchased my life time membership in 2006. I paid $750.00 (3 years in advance) and $29.00 per year thereafter. I was expecting my renewal (in the mail) as it normally comes. This year I did not receive it and when I went to the gym, it was the very last day my membership was active. However, because corporate was not open due to Memorial Day, I was instructed to call corporate the following morning.
I called corporate and according to them, my membership was terminated effective yesterday. My membership which I maintained since 2006. It could not be renewed, and in light of this, they offered a new membership for $100.00 down and $29.00 dollars a month. Where is the integrity of customer service? Has it vanished with the pursuit of maintaining an overly zealous fat account?
As I spoke with a person whom called herself a supervisor, she looked up my wife's membership which is due to next month and we have yet to receive a renewal notice for her as well. Is this ethical? With so many bills to stay on top of, do you honestly believe I will remember when my renewal is due? I left that to 24 Hour to remind me with a courteous email or letter. I received nothing but a "No" from Customer Service! Gaining an extra buck today may look good on the spreadsheet, but the new practice from 24 Hour to get rid of the old "lifetime" membership and get new monthly payments instead is straight out robbery!!!

I started 24 Hour Fitness gym membership 2013, I was given 2 options for membership payment. I was joining the 24 Hour gym in Fontana Slover Ave location. The staff told me I could either have a payment of $29.99 a month with no set limit, meaning the gym ownership can raise my dues at anytime, or they said I could pay $39.99 a month and have my membership dues locked in at the $39.99 rate for the life of the contract. I selected the $39.99 rate knowing how businesses raise their dues to cover costs, I felt I would be paying more at first but it would be locked at one rate. Everything was fine for two years, I then received a letter via email telling me they were raising my dues by $2.00. Let me tell you it is not the fact of the $2.00 amount, it is the fact that I was told it would never raise my dues. So I should have selected the $29.99 cost in the beginning and saved $240.00 over the 2 years.
I contacted manager ** at the gym 24 HOUR FITNESS in FONTANA and they said they could not do anything to help me and for me to contact Member Services which is what I did. After being on hold for 15 minutes to speak with ** a representative of Member Services, she was unable to assist. I requested a Member Services Manager at which point I was placed on hold for another 20 minutes until ** the manager for Member Services spoke with me and he was unwilling to assist in anyway saying he is going to Abide by the contract they have on record. I also retained a copy of this contract and it appears to me that the signatures are not mine, I sign my full name not initials.
SO LET THIS BE A WARNING TO ALL, DO NOT TRUST WHAT THE STAFF AT 24 HOUR FITNESS TELLS/SELLS YOU. THEY ARE LYING AND DECEPTIVE. You are told one thing and then asked to sign on a computer pad not being able to review the contract, at which point the things you are told verbally are not in the contract and you are not aware of this until they send you a letter stating they are changing something in your membership.

We have been a member of 24 Hour Fitness for a couple of years. The time has come that we decided to terminate our membership a couple of months ago. I don't think we need to provide a reason why. We simply want to cancel an unwanted membership. We called the customer service line of 24 Hour Fitness and after much discussion, we were told that we cannot cancel our membership over the phone. We were also told that we cannot cancel it online. The only way to cancel is to go to their location. I don't understand how you can open an account online but cannot cancel online. I don't understand how you can open an account over the phone but cannot cancel on the phone.
Anyway, we went to Irvine 24 Hour Fitness and asked to cancel our membership. The front desk person says that the manager was not in and we can't cancel our membership unless we see the manager. I asked the attendant if I can open an account. He quickly said of course. I asked why is it that the manager need not be present to open an account but require LDL to close one. Our account was not delinquent; in fact we were charged for 2 months since we started the membership process.
I believe this is a scheme by 24 Hour Fitness to prevent membership closures. We specifically told the front desk person that 24 Hour Fitness is no longer authorized to charge our account. Their response is to have a membership counselor will be calling us. What will the membership counselor do? Who'll he or she close the account over the phone? Oh yeah, they can't close the account over the phone! We will be going on circles.

Regarding the Glendale AZ location: Before I start I should note that I am a certified trainer and was working in gyms for over 2 years. I have gone to gyms on and off for 5. This Gym is absolutely disgusting. This is by far the nastiest gym I have ever been a member of. I have gotten athlete's foot fungus on my hands and feet which are peeling. I got a rash on my arms and legs. I work in an office, the gym is the only place my skin is exposed. Not once, but 3 times in less than 5 months. I have pictures to prove. There is a horrible smell coming from the wall behind the dumbbell rack like someone threw up and was never cleaned properly. This smell has been there for 2+ months. Not exaggerating. I have told staff but they do nothing about it. Discussing the matters of the gym with the staff I was informed that most of them are not treated well and couldn't care less as a result.
The locker room is disgusting and reeks constantly. They are usually out of paper towels and the sink is an eternal mess. I have actually walked in on a gentleman screaming at the front desk staff and I had to ask him to calm down because of how disgusting it is. He was screaming that the bathroom has not been cleaned in months and made him sick and that he had already spoken to management multiple times with no result. Multiple other people have complained about getting the peeling fungus I have gotten, and I have never once seen any cleaning crew or staff clean the equipment. I don't think it is ever cleaned. They clean the floor but that's it. The cleaner customers are expected to clean the equipment with does not smell like cleaner at all and seems to be very diluted if there is anything in it.
I have tried to cancel my account and was told that because I signed the contract I can't without paying a huge fine. I will be going to the city with the health concerns and state of the gym. Please do not go here. The customer service is non-existent and only open 9-5 M-F. The gym closes at 9pm F-S-S even though it is called 24 HOUR FITNESS. The equipment is their own personal brand and is poor quality. This whole company seems to be a scam and a farce.

Old machines, weird members, lots of TVs but you can't change the TV channels, no plastic bags available to put your sweaty clothes in after a workout, only 1 spin class on weekdays after work.
The general experience at the gym is depressing. So I was looking to cancel. Apparently there is NO recourse if you need to cancel. They demand that you pay $800 upfront. You can't even transfer the membership to a friend or family member that could use it. Even if you never use the gym, you are obligated to pay them $80 a month membership fee. They are not willing to negotiate whatsoever and for any reason, unless you die. I hate this gym, it's nasty. Do not sign up here. Try Equinox or Planet Fitness or any other gym in the city.

My wife and I registered for 24 Hour Fitness membership for my 17 yrs old son so that he can workout with one of his friend whom goes there for his work-out. Basically he wanted us to get the month to month base membership. So when we went there asked for a membership with proper explanations to the guy (I remember his name clearly) and he responded that, "Sure we have the monthly base membership and you can cancel it anytime…" and so on. We double check and double check it for sure just in case, he made us we trusted that. Next, he wanted us to sign on computer screen with bunch of contract things with his reiteration that "no worries and nothing is different than what I told you".
After a couple of months, my son wants to cancel it saying it is not very clean environment plus his friend is starting to work out at LA fitness. Knowing what I know about those kids wants to work-out with their friend… So my wife went to 24 Hour Fitness to cancel the membership of my son but the guy (i.e., the same guy who even helped us to get us the membership) was saying "gotta pay for 6 months membership penalty", saying that the contract is for 1 year?? So talked to service manager, but same things.
What a BS this is… that I think is biggest scam to rip off their customers and they don't have any original paper for the contract. My wife tried to contact their corporate manager and left a voice mail with phone number, but no calling back(?). No wonder they are losing all their royal customers to other gyms. It almost all sounds like well planned internationally. 24 Hour Fitness suck how they treat and how they conduct their business. We feel that we've got stuck and no way out - can anybody has any idea?

I was a member of Bally Total Fitness. I frequented either the Englewood Cliffs or the Saddle Brook, New Jersey facilities. Both were bought by 24 Hour Fitness. I did not receive notice of the buyout, let alone was I told how it would affect my Bally's contract. The new 24 Hour Fitness facility opened around December 2014. At that time I went to discuss joining. I was told that for Bally's members I'd get a discounted sign up fee (I think it was around $80) and a reduced monthly fee of approximately $40-something. I didn't think it was worth it so I did not join.
A couple months ago I noticed that 24 Hour Fitness has been charging me monthly. I finally got around to calling their Member Services division to ask why they were charging me and to request a refund. I told the woman I spoke to that I wasn't even sure if this was the right division to speak to since I wasn't a "member." When she asked for my account number I told her I didn't have one. When I gave her my name she couldn't find me on the system. However, when I told her my debit card number that was being charged, voila! They found me...
Eventually, I asked to speak to her supervisor, who told me the following: 24 Hour Fitness bought the contracts of all Bally's members and if we did not cancel our contract then we would be charged our Bally's fee; however, we wouldn't be allowed to work out at 24 Hour Fitness unless we "upgraded," i.e., accepted the deal that I rejected in December. In other words, they'd "honor" our contract with Bally, which for all intents and purposes does not exist, by charging us for that membership but would not allow us to work out there unless we paid more money.
My request for a total refund -- for all the charges since I have been unable to go to the gym that 24 Hour Fitness purchased but have been paying for anyway -- was denied. The supervisor did claim that notice was sent. I do not remember ever receiving any notice, especially nothing stating the ridiculous notion that I would be charged under a contract but not allowed to benefit from it anymore.
I told the supervisor this, and, hoping to appeal to his humanity, even said that it's possible I received notice but just thought it was unfair to be charged for something I couldn't legally get in return. He said it was their legal right to charge me regardless of whether I received notice, and admitted that I may not have gotten any. He offered to refund me for the last month and cancel my contract now (the same offer the woman I spoke to made). There is no way this is fair or reasonable, but although I am an attorney, without conducting any legal research into the matter (I just got off the phone), I cannot say whether it is legal. It sure feels like it isn't and definitely shouldn't be.

My intentions were not to sign up but to see if this would be a fit for me. After my tour the manager - ** told me have "I got a deal for you 'today only', I can waive the fee and you can sign up by paying first and last only at a military price." I did sign up. I did not use the facility but went home. The next morning I called the 24 Hour Fitness 800 number to have my membership cancelled. I had it cancelled because ** lied to me stating that my special was "today only". Military promotions are good no matter what time of the month you sign up. I asked the supervisor at that time if the 30 day free membership still available for my daughter to use. He replied "yes."
My daughter has tried three times to give the free membership to the same person and yesterday 4-27-2015 ** told her, my daughter, in front of the guest she was trying to give the free 30 day membership to that they had to pay 69.00 and that he would only give her three weeks of free membership. Well I don't understand why you would give out a free membership with attachments then obviously it's not free.
Today I called 24 Hour Fitness and after having to go through the auto system twice, I finally spoke to a supervisor ** who told me it was up to the manager to use or not use the free membership. When I asked to speak with someone higher up he said he was the highest person available. That I would be wasting my time and that his decision was final. I told him I still wanted to take it higher and he informed me that it would take 7-10 business days for someone to call me back. I left him my name and number and told him I still wanted a call back from someone higher up in the organization. I don't know why 24 Hour Fitness thinks it's ok to treat people like they do and offer free membership when in actuality it is not free.
