When attempting to purchase a computer that I entered into an agreement to lease just a few months prior, the store manager in Traverse City, flatly refused to sell to me. I had to have intervention from another employee as well as the manager's district manager to ensure me that I could purchase. Then, more than 8 months later, I contacted the store to inquire about any possible warranty options that may still be on the computer, and this same store manager refused to allow me to speak to anyone about this. Spoke in profanities to me and then abruptly ended the call by hanging up.

On December 21st I rented a recliner (item number 0367602806; serial number 02806; model 5470325). I had already paid the full month of February when I called the store and asked them to pick up the recliner since I was given another recliner by Vitas Hospice Care for my dying mother. I also asked them to refund me the remaining amount for the other 3 weeks. I was told they don't refund. I also asked them numerous times to pick up the item; they kept telling me tomorrow. They were very rude to me.
An employee told me he is not my husband nor my son and that if I didn't stop, he would hang up on me. The manager was also very rude to me. He told me they will get to it when they can. He was also very impatient and abrupt with me. I think they need to hire some people with more professionalism and with some public relations skills. Even if the area is considered a low socio-economic area, they need to learn to treat the customers with dignity, courtesy and respect. After all, no customers, no money.
Last night, 2/11/10, I had my son leave a message. This morning I received a voice mail from Mr. Lionel **, district manager. I had my son returned the call and again they were giving him the run around. The manager told my son they will send a form to refund me the money but will have to wait for next week for the item to be picked up. Again he gave the phone to another employee named Travis who refused to give his last name. After my son told him that I was writing to Consumer Affairs to make a complaint, my son was told that they will pick up the recliner today. I don't have sufficient space to hold two recliners; it's a small area and my mother's hospital bed is in the middle of the living room. Please, I need some help with this matter as soon as possible. Thank you. I'm a very deceived customer.

I purchased a bedroom group and a washer and dryer from them and I only received a contract for the bedroom group and was told I was getting a new mattress and ended up with a used one. When I asked for the one I was promised, I was told that it would cost 3 times as much. Then I was told one price for a washer and dryer set and never received the contract so I have had to pay over and over again for this mistake. I have been paying every month for my merchandise and I am continually harassed day and night and at work about 30 calls a day from these people, because they can't credit my account correctly and then I end up paying double what I would if they would have fixed it in the first place and this is still continuing.
I have left three messages with corporate and still haven't received a phone call back. I have paid for the use of the washer and dryer and haven't been able to do laundry in over 2 months because the washer and dryer broke down the beginning of December and it took them 3 weeks to "schedule" a swap out and the "swapped" washer never worked from day one. And I called them after the new year and let them know. I again called two weeks later asking for my washer and was told by Russel that it wasn't back in.
Then when my "payment" was "due" again, they called me and asked me for a payment and I told them that I was paid till the end of the month and they again told me I was incorrect and need to pay an additional payment to get "caught up" and at this time I was told that they had been trying to get a hold of me for over three weeks to schedule a delivery of my washer and dryer (at this time I was also told that my dryer wasn't ever sent out to be fixed). I scheduled for the following Saturday at between 2-3 pm and they failed to show up but told the bosses there was no answer at the door. I was home all day and have dogs so if someone would have come to the door the dogs would have barked.
So this being said I was again called today and was told that I needed to pay over $300 or my merchandise would be picked up. I asked about my credit and when I was going to get my w/d back, they said without the money, I wouldn't be getting anything and I can't have a credit. There is so much more.

I can't remember when or how long this problem has been going on. All I can tell you that I had this laptop for a little over a year now and in the month of Jan. 2010, it has gone to the shop at least 3 times for the same thing and also in the month of Dec. 2009 for the same thing. This has been an ongoing thing and it seems like the store or the DM is not doing a thing about it.
My husband contacted the store back on 2-2-10 about this and this was a week after we got this laptop back from them. After he talked to Barb at the store, I wasn't happy so I contacted their 1800 number. After calling them twice, the DM decided to call me back and I talked to him and he informed me that they will find me another laptop. Well, now here it is going on a week and I still don't have another laptop and at the end of the week which will be 2-13-10, my laptop will be due a payment. I feel why should I make a payment when nothing seems to be getting done.
Now, I really don't want to get my attorney involved in this but if I don't get some kind of headway with this, then I guess I won't have no other choice but to do a legal way. I gave the company and the DM enough time to take care of this matter and I'm just so sick and fed up with it all. Let's say this laptop has been in and out of the shop for at least 6 months for the same thing and now their tech is trying to say that I'm at fault and that I used up all the memory on this laptop. But you know what, I talked to my tech and if that was the case, well, then their tech didn't do their job all those times when it went in the shop because if they did, I can't use up all the memory on this laptop for what I do.
If they would do their job, period, I should not be having the same problem over and over. I really hope you can help me in this because like I said, I'm sick of all this and I feel like I'm being played with. Now I do understand that we had a winter storm this weekend but they should have taken care of this way before this. When I asked for a different laptop a few months ago, the manager, Greg, at that time told me he couldn't do that. Please contact me asap on this matter.

My father is renting from Rent-A-Center. He is not competent to make his own decisions at the present time. I have a power of attorney over him, at this time. There was an issue with an employee from Rent-A-Center going to his apartment, and making an offer for a Courio cabinet filled with Steelers merchandise, and the Rent-A-Center employee told my father if he gave him the Courio cabinet, he will apply a payment to his account, and he would not have to worry about making a payment. They took advantage of an elderly man who is not in his right state of mind. They made an offer for furniture in my father's house, and applied a payment to his account.

I have been a long time Rent A Center customer, religiously paying my bills with them on time. I have a couch sofa and refrigerator. People say you pay for convenience and yes that is surely true with Rent A Center. In no other circumstance would I ever use their services again. After faithfully paying my bills for almost 2 years, I ran into some financial hardship. Who hasn't? I still have been paying my bills, just a little late. It is truly disgusting, piggish, and unprofessional the way they harass me calling 10 times a day even after I advised them that I will be paying a little late.
They knock at your house door like the federal marshal, it is just ridiculous and humiliating. The gas and water company have more cooth and understanding than they do. Prior to having the financial troubles with them about a year ago, I moved to a new house and when I originally got the sofa and couch, I was told that if I ever moved that they would come and move the items for me.
Well, don't you know it. When I am ready to take advantage of this "service" I pay for, "Oh. we no longer do that". Wow, okay, thanks for nothing, Rent A Center. I would rather have a house full of nothing before I ever deal with your company again and I will surely tell everyone how I truly feel about you. I can understand if someone is severely delinquent but being late on 1 payment and telling you that I will be, shame on you! It's embarrassing, frustrating and it makes you feel like a criminal. I stress out more about my $80 Rent A Center payment than any other. They do not let up and they do not allow any delinquency even at the smallest. They are your friend when you sign up and make payments luring you into other items. As soon as you need something, you are a criminal.

I was only a few days late on my weekly payment. They know that I pay two weeks in advance because I get paid bi-weekly. I was not at home, but my wife and kids was. They called me and I told them I will be home in the afternoon so I will stop by the store. They sent someone anyway to collect the funds or pick up the laptop I rented. My wife advise the Rent-A-Center employee that I was not home.
The employee went back to the van which was blocking my wife's car in the driveway. The employee came back to the door and started banging harder on the door demanding payment of the laptop. Again, my wife advised him that I was not home and stop banging on the door like that because we have a little child in the house. The Rent-A-Car employee banged the door even harder causing my wife to be afraid for her life and my son. My wife called me and I can hear the banging from my cell phone.
I advised my wife to call the police and I will be on my way. At this point, I was mad as hell and raced home to confront this person. By the time I got there, the police was already there and my wife and kid was crying. I rushed towards the Rent-A-Car employee, but luckily, the police grabbed me before my hands reached him and told me he had it under control. The next day, I called their corporate office and Better Business Bureau and filed a complaint. I also filed a complaint with the police, by that time the employee had already quit.
I took the laptop back, erase all of my data and advised the manager never send a thug to my house again so I took the laptop, slammed it on the floor into pieces and walk out the store. A month later, they had the nerve to call me back to see if I wanted to rent something again since they have a special. I advised them never to call me again and hung up the phone.

I called Rent-A-Center to request a service due to my computer had various spywares on it. The tech then after servicing my computer, advise me he needed a payment, said my payment was due again. I stated to him I was not aware of that, I thought he was out just to service, not pick up a payment or I would have made arrangements for that. I earlier advised the store prior to him coming that I will pay on the first as I always due with one lump sum payment. He shortly became rude with me and called the store manager, Franklin.
He then got rude on the phone as well. I felt intimidated and insulted being I had been paying over 1,000.00 dollars over 6 months, paid off one account and opened another with never missing a payment and this the way I get treated. I stated to the two of them, when you approach someone home, you need to state is this a service or a payment pick up. You don't muscle me into a payment after you give a service I am paying an arm and leg for, plus your competitor at Wal-Mart sells the same computer for $399.00 and I am paying five times over that and you want to say you're doing me a favor?
I suggest you check the market with your competitors and treat your customers with better respect because they can come pick this computer up and with 2 of your payments. I can become a customer of Wal-Mart with better satisfaction, and you can look for another customer. Tremendous amount of stress, I felt harassed in my own home with two men talking, at the same time, rude to me. I told them I will never allow them to come out and service me ever. I was terribly insulted and ganged up on with negative responses from the both of them.

On January 19, my wife got a phone call from RAC about us paying for our account. I gave them a verbal agreement to pay that day (Thursday). My wife asked if it was possible to pay on Friday because of some other things had come up. They refused to give my wife the extra day and wanted the dryer and TV because we're behind 2 weeks. We have been paying for these 2 items over 2 years. They have helped us with 2 extensions but other than that, we have made our payments.
My wife told them I was not home and please wait till Friday. But they came over wanting the dryer and TV. They called my home phone in a very unprofessional character. This was totally uncalled for and it sent a very wrong message about customer service. My wife and I work hard for money; it seems so unfair to be treated like common thieves.

In 2007, I rented a 57-inch projection HD TV from Rent a Center. They told me it was used TV, but that once I paid for it, I would get a new one. Right before I was done paying for the old TV and ready to get my new one, Rent a Center changed their name to Get it Now. They said that I wasn't getting my new TV because they changed their name, but corporate office was still under Rent a Center. So in effect, I paid full price for a used TV, which does not work. I feel I should get some of my money back or a new TV.

I rented an LCD TV from Rent a Center. I allowed my brother to stay with me because my apartment is in his name to help him out, but only I make all payments regarding my place of residence. When I rented the TV, instead of them placing it in my name, they placed it in mine and his name. Long story short, my brother stole the TV when I left home to go to work. He has since been removed from my home and I have filed a police report for him stealing the TV.
I felt so embarrassed that I continued to make payments, but when I mentioned to Tasha, the manager, she developed a nasty attitude and refused to take my police report. Now, I am being harassed. I rented a Dinnette set and she says that she was cancelling my account and asks me to return the merchandise, so I had them pick up the dinnette set. I will file charges for harassment, if I have to, regarding her inappropriate behavior. I would never allow myself to be placed in a position like this, had I known my own brother would steal from me.

I used Rent-A-Center in Weymouth, MA to purchase a mattress set. I was told up front if there were issues with it, they would replace it as they had known complaints about recent mattresses purchased. I had no issues with paying the bed off before the 90 days -- still way over paid for it. The mattress was horrible which had the issues they warned me about. But it became such a hassle to try and get the replacement. I just gave up and chalked it up to experience.
During this, because they appeared to be accommodating when I complained about my mattress, telling me they had none in stock but would get a shipment in the next 2 weeks---which by the way went on for over a year, I chose to get a large flat screen TV from them. When I figured out what the final cost would be as opposed to saving up and buying one, I returned the TV.
Here's the kicker. When Lewis came to pick up the TV, I asked for a receipt so I had proof it had been returned. He balked for a bit but finally gave me one. The calls started the following week when the next payment would be due. They called me multiple times at home and at work even after I told them I returned the TV. Then the idiot on the phone asked, "Well, do you have proof?" And when I said, "I most certainly do. I have a signed receipt from the day it was picked up", he sounded like he was not expecting me to and became a little irked that I had proof. I explained to him if they called me one more time, I would go after them for harassment. I never heard form them again.

I rented a new couch and loveseat, used coffee and end tables and lamps, used stove, 2 used TVs and 1 new, and a laptop. I have been paying on this stuff since January 2009. As of December 2009, they tell me I still have until October 2010 until they are paid off. I have paid over $10,000 as of December. I cannot afford to do this any longer. I bring home $244 a week and it is taking $224 to make my payment and I don’t have enough left for bills. I have since returned the dining room, living room, tables and lamps and laptop. They tell me that I can get the laptop back if I pay $1900.00. I can buy a new one for that and have been paying $30.00 a week on it since January to December, and the pay off is $1900.00.
I cannot make heads or tails of my receipt. When I pay and when asked to explain, they are reluctant to tell me anything, just when you will be in to pay us. I don’t think that these practices are fair and something needs to be done about this before other people get taken in. The prices that are on these items when you buy is nowhere near the same amount that you pay. Please help me before I lose everything that I have worked for this year. I am sorry for being so gullible.

Due to a marital separation, I was forced to rent to own a leather sectional, a 42-inch flat screen TV and a surround sound package. It was unfortunate, but fine for the time. The initial problem started when the first payment was due, and I received no less than 5 calls on that day regarding that payment, even though I had told them when the payment would be made that day. I took care of that and most subsequent payments online, seeing that I grew quickly tired of the incessant phone calls. What I did not foresee was what their reaction would be once they could not get a hold of me by phone; messages on my apartment door, showing up at my apartment at all hours of the day or night, etc.
I then ran into the unfortunate dilemma of losing my full time job and income in mid December 2009. I still attempted to make payments on this stuff until after 1/1/10, but once my payments stopped, they began the incessant calls, showing up at the door, ringing the buzzer, and went to such illegal lengths as to call my mother and tell her that they were looking for me, while leaving threatening messages on my phone. What is most disturbing is that I was forced to sign up for "Benefits Plus", which was supposed to protect me by paying my payments for me should I lose my income. That's funny, since you have to go to the store to pick up the claim form, and then negotiate with them as to how much they will demand from you. I have resolved myself to have them pick up their stuff tonight, and to go without any TV or living room furniture for my kids because I will not deal with any more stress from such an illegal outfit.

My monthly payment was due on the 4th of the month. I talked with them the same afternoon. My car would not start. I informed them that I would be in the next morning, which I did and the manager wanted to charge me late charges in less than a 24 hour period. I told her that's all I had. I'm on a fixed income and that's all that I have. She refused the payment. Another employee there tried to explain it to her about what a good customer I am to them and she threaten to write him up for having a conversation with me about the payment and continued to be rude to me.
I have nerve problems and she upset me a whole lot. I had to have someone to drive me. I live a good long ways from Fort Valley and i am still depressed about the situation. I don't know what to do. Also, a few days later, I was sent a letter about the payment with the same late charges on it. It would seem to me that if they needed the late charges then it would be more by the time I received the letter. What do I do in Musella?

We are renting a washer and dryer, and on December 23, 2009, the dryer stopped working. Fine, they repaired it. But then the washer stopped in January 2010. It's been hard to get anyone from Rent-A-Center to fix my washer dryer set and get it back working. I refused to pay a rental on non-working appliances and still have to go to the laundromat to get clean clothes. Our bedding and jackets can't be washed in this little set they gave me to use. It's been almost a month since I have had my set back working. Please help me get this straightened out.

This past Wednesday a Rent-A-Center box truck came to pick up a washer and dryer from my house. On their way out, they knocked down the power line to my house which also knocked down the pole attached to my house and destroyed the meter box. Hose and Chuck were the two Rent-A-Center employees that came to the house, Hose being the driver. The power line that took down the pole also took a piece of the house with it. I called Progress Energy to the house so they can get the power line off the ground. That was around 5 pm. When Progress Energy came to the house, they had to cut the power off to the house so they could re-attach the power line.
After finishing, they tell us that they cannot turn the power back on to the house because of the damage to the meter box and that it would be a hazard to turn it back on in that condition and they told us that we needed to get an electric company out to fix the box before they can turn it back on. Mind you, we have an electric run home, we use space heaters for heat and an electric pump house for water so not only did we not have any lights but we had no heat and it was extremely cold. We had no water, no nothing and it’s going on 7:30 pm. I called Rent-A-Center. Hose, by this time, came to find out and he still had not even put in report about the situation. I told Hose that what was going on and he seems unconcerned with what my family and I have to go through right then and more concerned with not having to take responsibility for this.
After reminding him that he was driving the truck and not me, also acknowledging the fact that it was not intentional, he tells me that he is not going to be able to find an electric company this late and that there is nothing that he can do about it. They were about to close also anyway. I asked him if I can find one, if they will be able pay for it and he says they have some kind of H&R block card that would take care of it. I, unlike him, find a 24-hour electric company in the phone book called Progressive Electric Company and I asked them to come out. But of course, they need to know that they are going to be paid. I give them the number to Rent-A-Center so they can confirm the payment. When the technician calls back, he not only tells us that he cannot come out that night but in his words, he was getting the run around from Hose when it came down to the payment.
I called Rent-A-Center to see what the problem was and hose tells me that he doesn't think that they will be able to pay for the repairs to my home. I expressed to him the extreme concern for my family and our living conditions at that point in time and Hose showed no concern at all telling me that there was nothing he could do about it. I came to find that there was something he could have done about it and he could have put us up in a hotel. All he offered was for us to pack up all of our food and rush to the store before they left and put all our food in their freezer. My two children, my fiancé and I had to spend the night in a freezing house. My kids woke up several times in the night, shaking and I had them more than fully clothed.
The next morning, a very concerned technician came to the house just to see how bad it was. It was bad. He told my fiancé, Zachary Carl, that he was going to go ahead and start calling Rent-A-Center to make sure he was going to get paid and to get the ball rolling on fixing the problem. That was at 8 o'clock in the morning. I started calling Rent-A-Center around 8:23 am but they didn't open until 9 am. When they opened, I spoke with Ty, the store manager, who knew nothing of what happened and there was no report written up on anything so I had my fiancé explain the situation to him in the end. Ty, the store manager, was very helpful unlike his employee. We were given the run around by almost every Rent-A-Center person we spoke to. Ethel, the rudest liability manager, and David **** is just a jerk.
Progressive Electric Company had put in the paper work to Rent-A-Center early that morning. In their words, again, they were given the run around to avoid payment and also delay the inspector. The payment wasn't confirmed until around 11 to 12 pm and you have to get to the inspector way before that just so he'll come out that day. The electric company’s technician, Clint, finishes around 3:30 pm that day and he tells us that he doesn't think that the inspector will get there until midday on Friday. I called Progress Energy to tell them that the electric company has fixed the box and I now needed them to come and turn the power back on. They tell me that they can't until the inspector gets there.
After I get off the phone with Progress Energy, I called Ty and let him know the situation and he tells me that he is going to call the district manager, Darleena ****, to see about getting us a hotel. After calling the headquarters several times and even calling ABC 11 Troubleshooters and letting Rent-A-Center know that I did that and my fiancé is having conversation with what seemed like every head person in the company, we got a hotel but the damage is still done. My youngest son woke up sick, his nose was running and he was coughing. It is 5:53 in the morning. I’ve been up with my youngest since 2:30 am. He has been vomiting non-stop and he can't hold his stool.
If it were your children, your four and five-year olds, what would you want from Rent-A-Center? Would a hotel be enough? Would that cover the stress? The sick children? The lack of shower, bathroom and not being able to brush our teeth? As grateful as I am, that my children do not have to endure another cold night, watching my son vomit and **** all over himself makes me say with no problem. It’s not enough and the people should know what kind of lying artist runs in Rent-A-Center. My son is really sick. My family was treated wrongly and the whole process was handled very poorly by Rent-A-Center’s management except for the store manager Ty.

I honestly have to say, after reading some of the consumer complaints about Rent-A-Center, I'm shocked that they're still in business. I went to Rent-A-Center a few weeks ago to find a recliner lift chair, needed for surgical purposes, they told me to come back a few days before the chair was needed. And so I did, so now being a few days away from the procedure, I went back to make the arrangements to have it delivered.
When I arrived, a man greeted me and asked if I needed help. I then proceeded to tell him what I needed, being that the guy I spoke with was at lunch. As he was looking up my request, he handed me a rental form. He said to fill out the front of it. I sat down and started to fill out the from, I then simply asked why my SS# was needed, they stated for security reasons. I then continued with the form, and immediately came to a halt again, wondering why they needed all of my personal information meaning, my spouse's info, clear down to what kind of car I drive.
I then asked why and again they said for security reasons. I said, “Well, I don't think that is necessary”, and again they disagreed. I then stated I was only in need of this chair for one week but according to their service, there was a two week minimum, which was fine with me because I had intentions on paying the balance in full. He then said, “Well, then just put your name and your address and at least four references”. I said okay. Well I got to three references and I just did not have another to put down. I tried to explain to the man that I could not put anyone else on, he then said, “Well, then I can't rent you the chair.” I then turned to the manager, as he too explained me the rental agreement form had to be filled out.
I then said to him my situation of only needing it for the two weeks and paying up front, but he insisted that that was no excuse, I then simply asked for his supervisor's name and number, he started to tell me and I asked for him to write it down. He refused and then proceeded to walk away. I said I wasn't leaving without the number, which was rightfully mine to have. He then turned to his co-worker and told him to call the police. I then said, “Are you serious? You are required to give me that number”.
I then stated I would be back, and demanded that he give my rental agreement back, being half of my personal information was on it. I grabbed it and left, and before I could make it out the door he said, "I know where you live". The scary part is this man really does know where I live from just one glance of personal information that in my opinion was not needed.

This is an update to what was posted on 1/4/2010 under Russell in Okeechobee, FL.
As of 5pm today, Rent-A-Center came again to our door knocking. When I answered, I asked which one he was and he answered Carl. I said if he was the same one calling here with harassing messages and beating on our door for 15 to 20 minutes, tormenting our dogs inside knowing we are not home. And he looked at me and replied, "Ya, I want my TV!"
I looked him directly in the eyes and said, "You need to turn around, get in your van, and get off my property." At this time, he stated that he doesn't have to and he is not leaving my property and he wants our TV! At this time, he as well got on his Nextel and contacted Andy, the store manager. He told him what i said, and Andy relayed to him that he was to stand there on the property and defy my orders to leave!
Even though, I have now called the local sherriff's department, he then stated, "You signed a contract. I can be on your property and don't have to leave and am getting my TV! And I have the papers to prove it." When asked to produce them, he did not have them at all. He then said, "But I will in ten seconds, get back on the Nextel and tell Andy, the manager, to bring the contract with him!"
Then I stated to him that if he doesn't leave, I will forcibly remove him if needed. I told this man 3 times while I had the 911 dispatch listening all 3 times on my phone. But he will not leave. The 911 dispatch told me to go into the home and wait. So I did.
Twenty minutes later, the manager Andy showed up and knocked on my door. And when asked what was going on with my balances he was to be corrected over 3 weeks ago, he denied any knowledge of it. At this time, the sherriff's department showed up and instructed Andy to remove his self from my property and wait in the street.
After my self and my wife spoke to the officer, we requested that they were to be trespassed and we were not giving them the TV, and they can take us to court. He agreed and said it was a civil matter now, so he went outside to speak to them at this point. 15 minutes after, he came back with a book on Florida statutes and explained that Andy the manager came up with some statute stating that he had to file an arrest affidavit against me if we did not release the TV.
This officer did not want to have to arrest me and stated that even though we give back the TV, we still have a right to take court action against them. Against my better judgement, we let the TV go and were now out another eleven hundred dollars! However, both Carl the worker and Andy the manager were trespassed in the end.
Now as far as I understand, this is only legal with an officer's assistance and an R.I.T (right to retrieve), a signed court order by a judge for something like this to be able to take place. Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong!

I have been paying on my TV through them since Nov. of '08 and we have paid around $1,500.00 so far. My husband was unemployed and just got a new job. We have been dealing through a lot of things with his pay so I was trying to explain it to them. However, they refused to hear us so I made two $60.00 payments in the last six weeks. But after I spoke with them and gave them money, they started calling my relatives saying how much I owe. They wanted their money and stated that they haven't talked to me in months--when they talked to me three days prior and received money.
Well, I made a $60.00 payment so that would knock that price down and even if you add the two weeks of $56.09 total, it will still be around $136.00. But now, they got more than what the TV was paid for. They want $212.00 to be caught up and they want it now without any arrangements. This is all about profit for them. They want the item returned so they can resell it. Also, I am getting three to six calls a day from them which is really frustrating.

After losing our home to a fire, we went to our local rent-a-center and rent to own a 42 inch TV, an entertainment center and surround sound package. Every day the payment was due, they would call that morning at 8 am and tell us we owed and wanted to know what time we were going to be there to pay and if it was any later than that day, they were coming to get our property and as well they would call at least three times that same day. And if we weren't home, they would leave a message that either we pay or they were coming to get the property. On top of that as well, they showed up that same day and night beating on our door, not knocking but beating and telling us either we pay them or they will be there to pick up the products we had! This was as early as one hour after they would call in the morning and as late as 10pm at night and even when we would call and tell them we were going to be late by a day or a week. They would tell us that's not good enough!
We have been through them calling our home and then our cell phone back to back every 2 to 3 minutes for as many as 10 to 15 times day after day after day and as well them having different employees call each time from different phones. Back to back leaving messages and when I confront them about it, they have the audacity to say they don't know anything about it! Hmmmm. Let's see when you have only a counter that is 8 feet long and office behind it that is only 8 feet by feet and you' re one foot from each phone and there stupid enough to leave a message as well, but no one knows anything about how stupid do they think we are?
As well our neighbors have told us that when we have not been home, they have pulled into our 60 foot shell driveway at high enough speeds to come to a sliding halt only inches from our cars that are parked there and stand at our door beating on it, knowing we have two dogs inside and tormenting them by waiting for them to settle down, then beating on the door again and again and again. They told us they will sit there and do this for as long as twenty minutes at a time knowing that they are ** these animals off! They have been seen looking into the window on our door and going around and trying to look into other windows at our home.
I have even made complaints to their manager Andy and their receptionist and told them that one of these dogs is a one hundred and ten pound American bull dog and not if but when he comes through the window again or the door and I do mean when! And attack their employee if he doesn't injure them for life because they have tormented them like they have. They will be responsible for all the damages and be considered trespassers. We have gone as far as posting a sign in our window to warn them and they still do it.
We were also given a $500 dollar off credit by a mail coupon and were told it was for when the end of our rent to own was at $500 dollars. It would pay it off. This was told to my wife when she brought it in and the man said he would place it in our file. After we asked what was owed on the package, paying on this package for 1 year and that was the time frame for the rental to own they said we owed over 21.hundred on it still. We returned it to downsize to just a 37 inch LCD TV and were to be credited toward what we had already paid. The credit never happened and after paying now for a year again on a $13 hundred dollar TV, they're saying we owe over $11 hundred more and the $500 dollar discount coupon disappeared and now we're finding out that the TV is not new like we were told. It is used one. I know for a fact that now. That even a new just about the best 37 inch, you can get in no more than $600 dollars.

I called Rent-A-Center about how much I owed on the dryer. This was the last payment on the dryer. She told me that it would be $305.08. Are they kidding? I know I owed 2 more payments on the TV but $305.08, please. Ever since I said something to the people down at Rent-A-Center about the drivers lying to me about bringing the TV, they have not been friendly at all. I am not paying $305.08 for the last payment on the dryer so I told them to come and get the dryer and the TV. When I talk to people about Rent-A-Center, I am telling them what was done to me and it wasn’t right.

These people are the worst with regard to customer relations. They charged me $150.00 a week for a virus, used computer, two Magnavox flat screen TVs, a used couch and chair, and a chipped and broken, used bedroom set. I only wanted the rent-to-own for one year, April 2008 to April 2009. The first manager, Dave, told me that after a year, it would be mine. He always used to make sexual advances towards me. Then Daniel came in, he acted as if he had a race complex. I had to move from my place in Alexandria during my illness in late October. I contacted the District Manager Chris. They used to call my house 20 times a day. They called my elderly mom and told her that I was two months behind when I made a payment in late October. I ended up paying them close to $9,000.
When I moved, I took my items with me okay? I know that I've paid for that stuff 3 times over. I reported them to the County of Fairfax Consumer Protection Agency. They responded trying to attack me personally, but never offered to resolve the issue. I reported them to the Federal Trade Commission. I told the Point of Contact at the County of Fairfax that they can come and get their items, but they better leave me some money to replace what I spent. I haven't heard anything from them yet. I was contacted by an attorney in Minnesota to join a class action lawsuit, but then I couldn't qualify because I live in Virginia.
I'm waiting for them to take me to court. They would have taken the stuff that I've paid for, tried to make me continue paying for them and they would have re-rented the items again. If I paid that much money, struggling to pay for it, then I should have it in possession. They told me that I would be finished paying for it in April 2009, then October 2009 and then January 2010. I solved my own problem. I stopped paying for it in October 2009 because I was smart enough to realize that they were ripping me off! I'm tired of these businesses taking advantage of people. Justice needs to be served!

Today 12/21/2009, I went to pay on my rental agreement and was tried to be charged with a late fee. Your company gets payment from me on time and with no problems, except lately your store #406 in Greenville, NC had been coming up with all these surcharges. I usually pay on a Thursday or Friday and always noted that I pay a week in advance for usage, so where does a late fee come in as of Monday $15.00.
I took off work to make sure that I got there at the opening of the store. I thought I was a great customer but evidently not. I was caught up in a snow storm in Washington, D.C. over the weekend and informed them of the delay on Saturday, and I know this manager as I thought to be my friend could see that there was an accident or something. Then, I was also informed by another employee of yours that how can he charge you when everything is paid a week in advance. So, I decided not to pay the late fees and now they won't accept payment that's bull.
So they tell me when we can pick up the items. The items I have acquired are new and being well used and will be paid for, but right now we're both in limbo unless an agreement is made. One of the items is not even here - it's a laptop sent to my daughter in D.C. You or whom so ever can contact me for I have my own attorney.

They leave threatening messages with my children and telling them that I owe them and if I don't pay them, they were coming to my house. The next day, my sixteen year old son said they came to the house three times in one day and said they were going to call the police to take away the furniture because I owe them. They are harassing children under the age of eighteen. When I got home from work, my children were nervous and upset. My seven year old could not sleep because of what had happened. They caused emotional abuse to my family.

I've never had a bad experience with Rent-A-Center. They've always been accommodating and always helped me when I needed it. But then again, I've always paid my dues on time. They also made it quite clear that you'd be paying more money after the first 90 days because of financing, which is fine because obviously, a person renting from them doesn't have the large sums of money to actually buy whatever they are renting at retail price. I find nothing wrong with that and wish people would stop complaining just because they failed to look over the contract. I'm 23 and made sure that they explained everything to me, and went over ever line to make sure that I understood.
If you are going to get mad about something in the contract, then make sure it's worth getting mad about or that it isn't just simple error on your part. Now the whole scratching floors and what not. Well, can't say that ever happened to me but if they did do it, you can't blame the company. Just the employees, who are individuals.

I just found out the TV I'm renting was previously rented to other customers. How could they charge me $1,399.00 for an already rented television that has been rented by two other people? What's the original price for a brand-new TV? How much was paid from the two previous renters. Is this fair that they can charge for a new TV when in fact the TV has been previously rented by other people? Is there a law against this type of activity?

Since I have been renting with Rent-A-Center since February 2009, I have always incurred late fees. One rep told me in the beginning of my contract that I would have an extra 2 weeks free because I put $200 down and I was paying off 90 days same as cash on a bedroom suite. I began getting phone calls for a payment after two weeks, and I was told that I was late by the time I had gone up to the store. I had not had it for 30 days before they had to send out another set because what was supposed to be brand new. The wood began splitting and I had all kind of nicks in it; the mirror was scarred, as well. The second mirror still had a nick in it but I said forget it. The second headboard looked to be fine, but after months of having it and I was moving the heavy nightstand, I was able to see a nice size chunk out of the headboard.
I was told that it could not be replaced because I could have done it. I did not get to pay the bedroom set off because I went outside of my 90 days and I was told that I owed $800 plus left by one rep and $1,400 by another. Since then I have been owing the same $800 plus, and it has been at the price for at least since the end of August or maybe the beginning of September. I lost my job in September. I have been late every payment and I do not mind making the late fee payment. For one month’s rent it is $170 and because I have been late, they are being very rude to where if you want to call and tell them that you will be late, you cannot because they have some very rude attitudes.
Today I sent $200 which would pay for the late fee, catch me up and give me about 2 weeks. But instead, they refused the payment because they wanted $369.14 or the merchandise would be picked up at 3pm. The person that I sent the payment by left that store and went to the one down the street and the manager at that store was much nicer. He gave me the district manager’s number and the verdict was that, that store takes over my account. I have now 7 more payments of $90 plus, in which I still do not understand. It seems that it has finally gone down from the $800 plus but why did it take so long? Why when the merchandise was damaged on their part but it took forever for them to deliver on both occasions and that was fine for them. Do customers get any kind of breaks? No. I am very dissatisfied with this company and I will never rent from them again. They are too high, very rude, and not consistent.

I have been renting from Rent-A-Center a number of years now and as always, they try their best to accommodate me with anything. I am now renting a washing machine from them. I paid off half of the machine in the first 90 days, which gave me a balance of $395 plus tax to finish paying off the machine in full. I always get a balance on every receipt when I pay them. I went last week to pay my two weeks and as always, I asked them to put the balance on the receipt.
He put the balance on the receipt of $395 plus tax (total of $427.03) but then he told me the 90 days were over and the new balance will be $521 plus tax (which is almost the original price that I got the machine for). That brings the machine back to the original price of when I received it. So if I pay all that money in the first 90 days, it's not right to my balance. I feel that the balance should be $395 plus tax and I should pay from that balance. I didn’t know that they add more money on my balance if not paid in 90 days.
I think this is very unfair and if this is the way they work, I would not recommend anyone to rent or buy from Rent-A-Center again. I know you need to make money, but why do you have to deceive people? I have sent many people to the store to rent and the employees there are very courteous and very helpful. I hope I get some kind of reply to this and if I am wrong, please send me written contract of verification to this situation. As I can find anything to back, this extra adds on money to my balance.

The next day, the PlayStation was not working. I called Rent-A-Center and explained the situation. I was informed that because the PlayStation was no longer Rent-A-Center property, I would have to pay for the repairs. In August of 2009, I fell on hard times but still struggled to make my payments. On August 29, 2009, two representatives came to my home and collected $200 cash from me. I asked for a receipt. I was told that they didn't have one. I told them that I was not giving them $200.00 in cash without a receipt.
Later that evening, the same representative returned to my home with a Rent-A-Center voucher (substituting that for a receipt). The $200.00 covered 5 weeks of payments. Every Saturday since then Rent-A-Center has been coming to my home for payment. I don't have a problem making payments and paying for the late fees, but what bothers me is this. On October 24, 2009, two representatives came to my door and started pounding on my door and window ridiculously loud. This lasted for about 10 minutes. They then began yelling my name, "Ms. **, Ms. **" then they started whistling. After about 15 minutes of sheer embarrassment and harassment, they decided to get in their truck and put the truck in reverse and have it make the beep beep noise for yet a few more minutes.
My son called me at work and told me what happened. I called Rent-A-Center (upset of course because it frightened my child) and explained my concern about the way they "attacked" my door. The represented told me, "Well, you should have answered your phone **" and hung up the phone. Today is now October 31, 2009 and my kids are now being awakened by the sounds of pounding, whistling and yelling my name. I take full responsibility on being late with payments and that is no way to treat a customer, yet alone, a human being. And because of this, I will not be paying on the rest of my account, but yet pursuing a lawyer and suing for harassment, embarrassment and emotional stress. Once this is settled, I will never rent from Rent-A-Center or recommend anyone else to rent from them. Horrible and frightening customer service. After days of explaining the situation to them, they declared that it was my responsibility to pay for the TV. It may be true that a signed receipt would be my ticket of proof but the dishonest employee knew how to manipulate the situation so that a person lacking in knowledge of how the process of proof works would be disarmed by the fact that; the TV was scheduled to be picked up that day, and the insistence of the employee that a receipt was not necessary would further assure his success. I've been renting at rent-a-center for about 4 months now and I've yet to receive any of the terrible customer service you guys have been talking about on this site. I'm renting a 60-inch Sony Bravia DLP. The only negative thing I can really say is that when I called to tell them the lamp was going out on this TV, they told me they would have to send the entire TV back to Sony just for a freaking lamp. I know that this was a lie because I actually work for an electronics company that is contracted by Sony and other places to come to the customer's house and replace these things for them.
The lamp doesn’t even require tools to be put in. It takes about maybe 2 minutes to do and even a child could do it too. But other than that, the service has been fine. All the people are very friendly. If you’re late on a payment, they do tend to call you a lot. But that’s understandable considering how many people they probably get, that try to run off with their merchandise.
I think this pretty much just depends on the place that you rent from. My conclusion is that, if you can afford to buy or have good enough credit to go somewhere else, you probably should. But if you’re like most of the people in this country and rent-a-center is your only choice, then shop around. Try different locations. Don’t let a few stupid people keep you from making a purchase. My store has great service and friendly people. So at least you now know it’s out there.

I was shown a laptop and was told about the washer, which was not at the store yet. When I started to get the paperwork, the going price given was $391.86 for the computer and $329.00 for the washer. Once we were done signing, before he packed the laptop, I noticed that the keyboard was not working. He stated, "We will send it out to get repaired." "But I just gave you $300.00 cash for two items that I will not have," I said. I was then told that their delivery will not come out until next week. I waited for the washer over a week. I eventually received it - but the laptop, I had to call and complain for a couple of days. He brought out a loaner for me to use.
Well, two weeks go by. When I went back to the store, the rep gave me the laptop I had purchased. However, when I got home, I found out that it was the same laptop with a lock on it - inaccessible. When I took it back to the store, the rep said that they've been having problems with the repair shop. I was told to take back the loaner and not to worry about the payment until the issue gets handled. Well, that was a lie. They then called me to give my payment on my items - the washer and the laptop. They posted money on the laptop when I had told them that with these red flags, I do not want the laptop. They said that they were sorry, but they cannot transfer the money to my washer. In the end, $150.00 went to the laptop that Mr. Andrew ** said they had to trash. Now, when I had gone in there to take back the laptop, he had given me a receipt of my washer with a balance of $15.98, due by 11/09/09.
I went in on 9/30/09 to pay my balance off. When he gave me a balance of $245.00, I said, "What?" I told him about the receipt he had given me and he said that he needed to see it. I came home and faxed it to him. Then, I went in the store to pay off the balance. He then charged me $173.58. He said he needed to charge me tax fees over again. I am so disgusted with Rent-A-Center. They are thieves and, most of all, liars. Never will I go to RAC. It is a shame that Magic Johnson endorses them. I will get a word out to him through my brother-in-law.

My daughter and her fiancé were driving back to Hinesville today. Her fiancé was stopped for speeding. When the officer came to the car, he said he was going to place him under arrest! Well, needless to say, my daughter and her fiancé were all upset wanting to know why! The officer said that there was an outstanding warrant from Rent-A-Center! From what we can tell, this is what happened. About 2 years ago, Tim rented some furniture from Rent-A-Center. He was in the military and was out in the field and I guess he didn’t make a payment. Anyway, when he got back from the field they came and picked up the furniture, but in the meantime they put out a warrant for his arrest. Now mind you, he has been living his life for the last 2 years and had no idea that they had even done this!
Until today when he got stopped for speeding! Now he is in jail and we have to try to get him out. The kicker is that this is a federal offense! That is a big deal. It could really mess up his military career because he has to deploy in 3 weeks. I am warning everybody not to rent from Rent-A-Center! I mean come on, this boy is fighting for our freedom and they are doing this to him and they got the furniture back! There should be no warrant!

We rented a computer and an Xbox game. On the day we made the agreement, I asked for both items to be new. However, upon seeing the contract, the Xbox was used and only the computer was new. I returned the Xbox three weeks later because it was not working. They took it and send it out for fixing. I did not get it back until a week later on. Prior to receiving the Xbox back, it still would not turn on. I brought it back to them continuously to be fixed. While all of this was going on, I never received a loaner and I was still making payments on the merchandise. They also discussed my personal business account with third parties which I asked them not to.
They would call me before my payment date and asked me what time will I be in. They harassed me with phone calls consistently. I think that we should not have been paying for the Xbox while they had it because we never got a replacement for it. We were just paying for them to give us back a broken Xbox. It says in their contract that they will fix the merchandise if it was broken and it was not our fault. I would just like them to reimburse me on the Xbox or to just fix it so it would work.

I have had an account with Rent-A-Center for several months. I have always paid on time, only a few times I have been late and of course I’ll pay a late charge. The guys in this company are so rude. When I told them when I can make the payment, they will tell you when you will make the payment. They don’t have any regard to customer appreciation, or dedication. This company might have a customer base now but with this type of attitude, we will disappear quickly. And from the comments on this site, it seems that they have a lot of dissatisfied customers.
Once they came out to pick up one of the items I rented, they entered my home. My son, a minor, said they banged on the door. He said he opened it, he is a teenager. They didn’t leave until they took the items with them. When I questioned the manager about this, he was so afraid that I would report this. He brought the items back that night. I don’t know who’s training or what they are training, but don’t forget customer service that’s what fuels the company. Remember we can always go somewhere else. I was very disappointed knowing I have been a dedicated customer. And I was very angry to know that someone from this company entered my home while I wasn’t at home, when they could have called and made a time to pick up.

I visited their store last Saturday morning as I wanted to see some furniture for possible rental of a bedroom set. At first, I didn't see anyone and when I tried to walk towards their office to see if someone could help me, the gentleman who came to try to help me said that he didn't understand me (because I only speak English). I asked him kindly if he could try to get someone who speaks English.
After waiting for about 10 to 15 minutes, this arrogant gentleman, who claimed to be the manager, asked me what I needed. I asked if he was the needed personnel who speaks English. His answer to me was, "I am a very proud Cuban. All of my customers speak Spanish and/or Spanish and English." I then told him that I felt offended that I had to wait for him to speak English. He said, "That's life!" After he told me that remark, I walked away. But as I was leaving, I said, "Go to hell."

I rented a bedroom set, the initial delivery was the wrong product. The delivery guys left the box spring and mattress only and would return with the correct set. The next day or two they returned with the correct set, I was told it was new however the paperwork said it’s used. After set-up one day later, I noticed that the headboard moved. I investigated, the headboard was not attached. I called RAC and was informed that I could purchase screws to attach my own headboard. And if the headboard splits, I would be liable. If I call the office, I will get 10 different answers from 10 different people for the same question. I am constantly harassed about the payment. RAC are the equivalent to loan sharks. I have pictures of the headboard leaning against the window not attached to the bed frame. I just want other potential customers to beware.

I was one week late from paying my bill and then he started calling everyone in my family. He was harassing them, telling them that I was going to go to jail and everything. I was about to give them my payment but now that he had harassed me and caused my family such harm and threats, I am not going to pay anymore. If they want their stuff, they can take me to court because they were wrong for kicking my door and acting with no respect.
I am truly hurt because I had good standing with Rent-A-Center. Now, I just can't do it anymore because of the pain they have caused me. My mother said it was a guy named Matt, one Mexican guy and another guy. They threatened to kick my door down and come inside the house. I have never been late on paying them but now, I am not going to pay. They can take me to court because I recorded some of the phone calls that they have left my family. I will hire myself a good lawyer too. I just think that it was very rude for them to try to kick my parents' doors down, to try to leave all these rude voice messages and curse at my family for being a week late.

I had received a phone call from ** who is the assistant at the 4737 Hwy 6 North store. If I run into a problem and I tell you that I can take care of it the following week with the late fees and the current, what is the problem? He told me in his own words that I was living outside of my means.
Yes, people, he said that! I am furious and very upset. Then, he told me that if I could not pay today, that they will come get my TV which I only have about $300 left on. Do not ever rent from these people. They are not understanding nor do they have any customer service skills. I will never recommend this place to anyone nor any other Rent-A-Center because they seem to be all the same from what I am reading.

In October of 2008, I rented a computer from Rent-A-Center because I needed it for school. It’s September 2009 and I’m still paying for it. But I’m almost done and have hundred odd dollars left. My payment was due last Friday which was September 18. But I was out-of-town because I’m moving to Memphis and I have to find a house before my lease is up and that’s September 30. I called and told them that I was out-of-town, but they still called and harassed me. I’m back in town now but I can’t make the payment until this Friday and I explained that to them. They were still not trying to hear that. They were still ringing my door bell 10x a day, and calling my phone 30x a day.
I’m paying my bill in full on Friday and that’s not good enough for them. They wanted to still pick my computer up. I’m just writing this complaint to inform other people that no matter how bad you need something, never rent from Rent-A-Center. They harass you more than a landlord does if a tenant pays late on rent, and more than the light and gas companies do. This is real sad and, on top of everything, rude. I think they should be closed down or change their policy. Because everybody in their lifetime gets financial bind and even Rent-A-Center workers do. They should be able to understand that as long as you are not a month or something behind late. But my main concern is I’m almost done paying in full and they still harass me.

Well, I got a laptop from Rent-A-Center back this August of 2009. I knew I was gonna be late on a payment so I went up there and told them on a Thursday. I told them that I would pay in the first of the following month. I asked for my payments to be changed to once a month. I was thinking that since I did ask, they would have taken care of it. The next day, I was getting calls from that Friday up until the 1st of September to pay my bill. When I talked to them on the phone, I told them I was going to be late and they didn't have to continue to call me. After that, they started calling my references threatening them with court papers and to tell me that. So I confronted the girl who called my references, but she told me she didn't call them. The girl wanted to lie. She even said that she could show me phone records of where she didn't call.
Then, I had them come to my mother's home trying to take my laptop after they were supposed to arrange my payments to once a month. They continued to say I was three weeks behind when I paid for the last week of August. So when I went to pay my payment for September, they talked about me owing around $100. I said, "If you had changed my payments to once a month, how am I behind?" To make matters worse, they told me I wasn't due until the 15th of September. I was told lies after lies by the account manager and another employee there about my account. I want to make sure this complaint gets to the home office of Rent-A-Center.

Rent-A-Center calls my home, work, friends and references day and night, advising them to tell me to pay my bill. This would start on the day the bill was due as a reminder call. When I questioned them about this being illegal, they told me it was company policy to call twice a day until they got you to come in and pay. They would also come by our home at random times trying to catch us at home and if we weren't there, they would leave a note on the door. When I showed them in black and white the harassment laws, they said that did not apply to them because they do not report to the credit bureau and started calling even more. Due to the weekly payment plan, this means they call all of the time that they are open! By the time I learned the laws, I only owed a couple of hundred dollars and just paid out the account.

We got a side-by-side refrigerator from them. About 2 weeks later, it was freezing with ice hanging off the shelves. They came and left us with a loaner. It took over a month to get it back. Parts were missing and all dented up. About a week later, they replaced it with a brand new one. About a week ago, we got behind our payments. They came and it still looked new, with no dents or scratches. The next day, we paid for 2 weeks. So they brought it back. They never took it off the truck, when they picked it up. Ray, the one who brought it back was mad because he had no one to help him. He picked it off the truck and he dropped the freezer door off the truck. And he then broke the handle and dented and scratched the door all up. Plus, when he brought the rest of the side by side in the house, he dented it up.

Well for me it all started in July of '08 when I called Rent-A-Center to get a TV, which was only supposed to be for a couple of weeks until the rest of my things make it to my new residence. Everything was fine until I lost my job, which just so happened to be a couple of weeks after I signed the agreement with Rent-A-Center. I was paying for my merchandise weekly and the weekly rental fee was ridiculously high at $20.00, but I paid it faithfully. Until one day I happened to see an advertisement from one of the competitor stores. And I thought to myself I ought to give them a call and see if I can get a quote. I did and needless to say that their quote put Rent-A-Center’s prices to sham by $5.00.
I was livid at that point. I called Rent-A-Center and told them about the competitor’s prices and they agreed to come down to match the competition’s price. At this point they beat the competitor’s price by now only charging $12.99 a week. But that was also when I found out that my 90-day same as cash had expired. The manager at that time was named Jalisa and she said well if you had called in 2 days ago and just paid the $129.00, your TV would've been paid off. So, I started to ask questions like, “what is my balance now”, “was this TV a used television”, “how long was it rented for”, and “what happened with the contract price wise when you go past your 90 same as cash”. And I thought I was going to go into spontaneous combustion when she said what she did. She told me that the cycle basically starts over or into turns into a full out lease/rental.
I didn't quite understand so she explained to me that when it expired, they added on an additional $150.00 to my contract. And this happens every 90 days until your contract is paid. So, I asked her how the heck we, the customers, are ever supposed to pay a contract out if you keep imposing fees unbeknown to the customer. Then she replied, “Well that's where doing your homework comes into play.” I was grateful for seeing that competitor’s ad which taught me to shop for others’ prices and make them honor what they say they'll do which is match or beat the competitor’s prices. Thus far from Rent-A-Center I've gotten mattress sets and paid for them, but it wasn't easy. They hounded me like no one’s business, as if I had taken the mattress sets from their home. And I'm still waiting on my certificate that states that my items are paid for in full.
I still have that TV and now I'm $100.00 from paying it off, and the reason for my writing in now is because I recently discovered something new. That only 50% of my payment has been going toward my TV. I just paid a payment of $12.99 for the week, $6.50 goes to finance fees and the other $6.50 is applied to the principal balance on the TV. Believe me we've had our battles like them calling the local police to try and get back the merchandise, me calling the regional manager to complain and she's been nothing but understanding and pleasant to deal with. It's just a shame that she works for such a horrible company, then again maybe it's not because she could help out other people like me. But the disheartening part to all of this is that when you shop the competitor’s prices, they have to have in stock that exact same make and model of the merchandise that you currently have.
I was trying to find a Magnavox 32” screen TV, and every other rental company that I called just kind of laughed and said “No, ma'am. We don't carry that type of TV because it's such a late model TV that no one is carrying them anymore.” So, do I feel taken advantage of? You dang straight I do and that's my reason for writing because when I tried to comp shop, the current manager was sarcastic in our conversation. He told me well you might as well pay it on off now, it's only $98.00 and I told him you say that like it's $.50. To you it's small change, but to someone like me it might as well be $500.00. I'm just trying to make this last bit of the rental disappear with hopefully finding another company that has a TV just like the one I have. To add insult to injury, they don't report to the 3 credit agencies and a lot of their stuff is crap. But what are you to do when you are credit challenged and in dire need.
I paid entirely too much for a TV model that isn't being made anymore and for I'd paid full price as if it were a brand new one. Rent-A-Center really knows how to rip off desperate people in a bad situation. They should be made to go out of business for their business conduct and the way they treat they customers. They're all sweet to you until you sign your name on that line which you might as well be agreeing to run through fire with gasoline drawers on.

I rented a bedroom set from Rent-A-Center on 7/29/09. I was told that they would deliver the set in two days, but it never came. So I called them and was told that it was a problem with the head board and that it would be delivered on 8-1-09. Two weeks later, I started seeing lots of roaches in my bedroom. I'm a very clean person. Roaches were even in the bed with me. It made me look at the bed set a little closer. When I noticed that the wood of the bed was flooded with roaches, I was very upset that they would even sell anything in that condition to any one. At this time, I only had the set for a month.
I called the store to let them know about the set, and they were very rude to me. I was shocked that they would speak to me in that manner. I asked to speak to the manager to tell him that I didn't want the set after my finding in the bed and to come pick up the set. That was on 9-3-09. That manager Hector was as rude as the first person who picked up the phone. He never asked me if I wanted something else in the store, being that I didn't have the set long. I only had it for 4 weeks, so I decided to go to the store so I could talk to Hector face to face.
He was even ruder in person. I asked him how they were going to credit me for what I already paid. His answer to me was that it's no credit for me because I slept on the bed for 4 weeks. But he didn't ask if I wanted anything else for my credit, just that I'm out of a set and out of my money. I don't think that's the way I should be treated. I would just like to have my money back. I would never buy anything from them again, and I would make sure that none of my friends buy anything either. I am going to rent the apartment and wasn't there when they came, but the owner was. I received no call from Rent-A-Center. Today is Sunday, I went to the apartment and there were the guts of my refrigerator against the wall and on the floor, but no shell. It appeared that it was too wide to get in and they left all but the shell. They told the owner they would call me right away. Well, no call at all. Had they called, I could have done something about it on Saturday. Now it's Sunday and they are closed, and will be closed on Monday also for the holiday.
Don't they need any business? I would say probably not or they would treat their customers better. If they could give me a much better deal on a smaller fridge, I won't be as upset as I am. Can this be straightened out by Tuesday morning?

I am a customer of Rent-A-Center and have been for the past 2 years. Last week I had to file a complaint with the BBB because of the Customer Service I had received there! After almost 9 years of working at the Practising Law Institute in NY in Customer Relations, I had experienced some questionable tactics with this company. I had to call the CS dept and make several complaints which were handled diligently by the regional mgr. Still numerous calls were made to me in the liking of loan sharking telling me that I should be able to contact family members to help pay my bill.
I had the last straw when I had asked my brother, Ricardo **, who resides in Tennessee, to pay my bill. He called and they told him they could not take the payment which he found deplorable by the way he was spoken to. My daughter, Faith **, who works for Chase Bank in Jacksonville, FL has paid my bill numerous times partially, while I pay the remaining. I have been out of work since 5/05/2009. I have paid my account always. I have never been treated so badly or made to feel badly about my not working.
It seems to me that it should not matter as long as my bill is paid! They have no right to explain in detail to my brother the situation as to which he is privy to anyway. He found it very unusual to be spoken to as a third party in this matter. I have suffered severe migraines due to constant harassing phone calls! I have saved several messages because even my closest friends cannot believe how many calls I have gotten. The district manager, Mr **, had to rectify them.
The store manager, Rich, is very nice and compliant with the customers' needs. Evidently he was out on this day! Any questions, feel free to contact my daughter to verify everything I have stated and my brother, Ricardo. After his conversation with Mr. ** and whomever answered the phone, he is dying to speak with someone especially since Magic Johnson is a valued contributor with this business. I owe $25 on my dinette, $300 couch and $600 bedroom set. I love my furniture and I want a resolution. Why is it that I cannot get a printed balance on what I owe? Why is it necessary in this economy to treat people like criminals? Why do I have to be afraid to answer my phone?

I rented a dining-room table from RAC and I had the 90-day same as cash contract. However, my bill is due on the 28th of every month. RAC calls me every month on this date to remind me to pay my bill. I was never late on my bill and each time I paid my bill, I gave them 3 times over the amount so that I can get my bill paid up. On the 28th of August 2009, I received the call. Like always, I was at work during the time, but as soon as I checked my voicemail I returned the call and spoke with Darnell. I explained to Darnell that I had to do over-time at work and would it be alright if I came in the following day to pay my bill or could I send my brother up to pay it because I would not be off work before they closed. Darnell told me that it was fine and that I can come and pay it the following day, which was a Saturday. Darnell asked me what time would I be there to pay. I asked what time did they close and he said they closed at 6:00. I then said I will be there after 3 but before 6. He stated, “Ok, now, that’s what’s up?” which was so very unprofessional. 2 hours later I checked my voicemail and RAC left 2 more messages telling me that I needed to come pay my bill.
I thought this was strange because I had just made arrangements with Darnell to pay it the following day. I called RAC back and I spoke with Henry. I explained to Henry that I had just made arrangements with Darnell to pay my bill tomorrow. Henry stated ok. I then told Henry if it was a problem, then I can meet them at a McDonald’s next to my job to give them the payment. Henry stated no and that’s okay, he will make a note of it that I will be in tomorrow. However, when I arrived to work the following day, my co-worker stated that I needed to give RAC a call because they had been calling there for me all morning. I stepped into the office and called RAC back and asked them why are they constantly calling my place of work when I told them that I would be there to pay my bill after 3:00 when I got off work.
He stated that he did not know anything about that and that I needed to come to pay my bill. I asked to speak to the manager and he stated that he was the manager. I explained the situation to him and he stated that it was fine and he will see me before 6:00 today. When I got off work, I went straight there to pay my balance off. I asked for the manager and I told him that I thought it was very unfair and harassing how they kept calling my home and my place of work when arrangements had already been made for me to pay my bill today. He stated, “Well, I don’t know who could have told you that because we don’t make arrangements for weekend payments.” I stated I spoke with Darnell and then I spoke with Henry. He stated Darnell and Henry is the same person. I then told him that’s who agreed to the arrangements. He stated he could not have told me that because he can’t make those decisions. I told him I had no reason to lie on his employee and if he checks my records, he will see that I am never late and that I always pay way over the amount that is owed. He then stated he can’t see him telling me that. I then said okay and asked what my remaining balance is.
He stated $949.53. I asked him how this came to be when the last time I paid my remaining balance was $600 something. This "manager" told me, “Well, your bill was due on the 28th and today is the 29th and you are late; therefore, you are not under the 90-day same as cash contract anymore.” I explained to the "manager" once again how they agreed on me coming to pay today and if this was the issue, then they should have told me that when I spoke with them several times the day before and I would have had my brother or someone to bring the money to you all. And I then told him that I felt that he was being unfair to me as a customer. He then said, “Well, you should have paid your bill on time and you wouldn't have had this problem.” I felt that this was totally disrespectful and unprofessional. After I pay RAC the $949.53 that he says that I owe them since he told me I was no longer on the 90-day same as cash because of a day late payment in which they agreed to, the total amount I paid for this $1,000 table set will be $1,949.00, which is so unfair to me as a customer. Not only did they harass me at home and at work, but I feel that they agreed to this 1-day late payment because they knew that this would take me out of the 90-day same as cash contract in which I originally agreed to.

I received a call on 9/24/09 stating that my bill needed to be paid. Mind you, I just paid them $36.31. Then they called again the next week saying my bill is due. I paid them $72.92, then they tried to say my furniture was due, which was untrue because it was paid up until 10/3/09. This is very stressful for a heart patient knowing that I pay my bills, and I pay them on time. This is a form of harassment, and very poor bookkeeping, and poor management on their behalf. I can see if I was trying to get away without paying my bills but I'm not.
I tell them to come get the ** computer. They say, "Is that what you really want?" Yes, if I continue to get harassed. They never show up but continue to call saying my bill is late. They call late after hours when the store is closed. This is a clear case of harassment. Also, I set up an online account with these people. One month, I can get on; the next month or week, and I can't log on. Something is very wrong with this company here. I know the economy is very bad right now but please don't try to take advantage of us poor citizens trying to make a house into a home. They called my niece telling her that my bill is late, which it wasn't.

As a former employee of the RAC, I have to comment on all the consumers that feel that they have been done wrong. First of all, if you just paid your bill on time, then collection calls would never have to be made. Second, remember the agreement you signed that revealed the cash price and total cost? Well, then why do you always feel you have paid too much for an item when RAC is picking it up for nonpayment? RAC always reveals the amount of money you could pay, but just because you pay $1,000 extra in late fees, you feel you have paid too much. Newsflash: If you can't afford it, stop acting like the victim and just return it to the store. There is never an issue when you are on time, but the minute that it becomes a collection issue, there is a million problem with the merchandise and that is the reason you can't pay, really? Just be an adult about the situation and suck it up!

About two weeks ago, I ordered a mattress, boxspring, and rails in "like new" condition. The customer service was really good; however, when the actual merchandise arrived, it was well past "like new." It was broken in, but not broken down, and so for the sake of not sleeping on the floor, I signed off on it. In the time gone by, I had not been able to figure out what the strange odor in my room was. And today, when I went to wash my bed linens, it hit me like a mack truck! Mold or mildew coming off the mattress! I had looked past the cosmetic tears and scrapes as long as the cushioning wasn't coming out, and the springs weren't stabbing me - but mold is a serious issue! And to think the 90-day buy-out for these items is a little over $400! Seriously, one could buy a brand new for that price.

I authorized Rent-A-center to post a one week payment on my checking account in the amount of $14.77 on August the 15, 2009. The female assistant manager took the payment. On August 20, 2009, I checked my account and there was an overdraft fee of $35.00. Rent-A-Center took it upon themselves to round my payment to $15.00. The manager of the store was out on the road so he asked the assistant manager to handle the problem. She repeatedly stated the she did nothing wrong.
I just thought that to be odd. How can she handle the problem I feel that she created? I believe that she covered up her wrong doings. So when the manager (Lauren) called me, he said he looked at the payment receipt and she only took $14.77 out of my account. Why would the bank say $15.00 when they have never been wrong with the payments before? I really believe Rent-A-Center is covering up their mistake. I am truly tired of dealing with them. I ask them not to call me regarding selling items and they still do. Something needs to be done about this.

When I got the stove from them, they told me that they do not hook stoves up because they are not licensed for that because of the gas and that I would have to call consumers. Well, when they came to get it, all of a sudden they knew how to unhook the gas and turn the valve off, not true after they left, I kept smelling gas, my eyes started watering and getting a headache. So, I called consumers and they found that they had never turned off the gas to the stove.
I feel they owe me and apology because they could have killed my whole family in that house. If they say one thing, they should stick to it. They weren’t even going to leave me a slip saying they took the stove, and I have heard too many stories of how they have come and gotten people’s stuff and didn't leave any receipt saying they took it and those people were charged with stealing Rent-A-Center products.
Rent-A-Center is a rip off and I will never rent from them again in my life. They were charging me too much for the stove anyway, it was used and they were charging me as if it was new. If you have to pay $140.00 a month for a used stove, what in the world would they charge you for a new stove? I will be looking for my apology.

I could be a little off about the price but I do know it was at $500 range. So, I called and waited at least a month before anyone contacted me. Finally, I took it in and they said it was fixed. Well, it was not. After about a month I called again and again. After numerous attempts, I finally said forget it! My temper was flared and then all of a sudden the modem started beeping and nothing would come on the screen! Till this day it sits in my room not working! I am very mad because I paid it in full as fast as I could and I got junk! I work hard for what I have and saved up money for this for a long time. Also, during the spin cycle, the water would not be completely extracted from the washer. So, we would have to wring the excess water out of the clothes, and it would take twice as long to dry. Rent-A-Center has picked it up several times and brought it back saying that it was fixed and it never was. This last time, I got their Corporate office involved. I was told by the district manager here in MI that it would not be returned to me unless it was fixed properly, or they would have to replace our washer with a new one. The payments have gone down at 40% and they told me that I may resume paying and they will credit me for 10 weeks of payments.
At 10 weeks, the amount that I paid is $352.50 which is more money than their cost of the unit. Yet, they said I need to make 31 weeks of payments at $20.00 a week to own this system. I was under the amount of time for the 90 days as same as cash when I returned the merchandise, so why am I now required to pay more for the unit than what the price is? They make the company look bad. I have bought several things from RAC and have never once had a problem getting something fixed or replaced.
People get mad for the business calling their references. Well, if you paid on time or kept an open line of communication, then that wouldn't happen. I have been late a few times but I always call and tell them when I will be in to pay. All they are trying to to is run a business. It's the same with a car. You don't pay and the repo man comes. Since I didn't answer her phone call, she left a nasty message, aggressively threatening to turn me over to the police for stolen property.
Now, mind you, I was 3 days late and I pay consistently every payday. When I called her back, she told me that, "Corporate was buckling down on her and she needed the money today." In February of 2009, I rented a laptop computer from Rent-A-Center in Brockton, MA. When I contracted with them, they gave me a computer that worked for a few weeks and then started to overheat and shut down. I took the computer back, got a loaner and ended up keeping the loaner after I had reloaded all of my business applications on it. I am on unemployment and attempting to establish myself as a real estate agent so my computer is paramount to my success. In early June, I had a financial issue. When I required an unemployment extension, my payments lapsed for a week. I called Rent-A-Center immediately when I knew this and tried to make a payment arrangement. It was granted. I paid two weeks as soon as my unemployment was reinstated.
The week after, I had a family emergency and my payment would have been four days late. I called to pay it and was told I couldn't pay just one week due to the upcoming holiday (July 4th). I was told that I couldn't make any payment under two weeks. I called the district manager and left a message. I did not receive a call back until Tuesday of the next week. The manager told me to make a two-week payment and he would work with my account to get it up to date. When I called the store to do so, they refused the payment again, saying the district manager never told them I could do that. Now, I was up to three weeks, according to the store, that I had to pay. During all of this, the store left numerous phone messages not only for myself but my family and friends that I used only for references to open my account. They were not honest during these calls either, saying that I hadn't contacted them in over two weeks, that I was unreliable, that I was stealing the merchandise! I was completely embarrassed by this and humiliated. Not only am I hurting during these economic times financially but I am a survivor of domestic violence and have ongoing cases in court against my abuser.
Just last week, Rent-A-Center started coming to my home, terrorizing my son who was home with a friend while I was out. They were banging on the door very aggressively and yelling in windows as well as trying to open doors that thankfully were locked! This behavior is abhorrent and criminal! Now, the last conversation I have had with the company they stated that I was being taken to court and they were going to file criminal charges against me! This was after I stated that I wanted someone else to bring in the merchandise. I don't feel safe going into the store. They are bullies and from what I have heard from other people, their system is as after a certain amount of payments have been made, they aggressively look for ways to repossess the merchandise in order to have the ability to re-rent it to another customer. This lowers their inventory costs and they can make thousands on one product by continually recycling it and re-renting it! Horrid!

After I told them not to call me and that it's not my issue, a few days later, I'm in there paying my bill. I had my mother with me. I turned my back for a minute, and the worker there was harassing my mom about the bill of family members whom she is nowhere related to. So that really upset me.
Then I went into labor, so I got a call because I'm a day late on my $26.00 bill, which I may add I have paid over a grand to these people. And I always pay, so I tole them I'm in labor and that I'll call them back. The worker started laughing and asked if I'm gonna call in a couple of hours. So still in the hospital, I got 16 calls from them. Then they called my mom once again who is just my reference, wanting her to pay the bill and telling her how much is owed. It's $26.00 and I'm not even a week late, but they can't take that for an answer. They just plain harass and bully people over money. I have been a customer of Rent-A-Center since March of 2009. In April, I had gone into the store to change the phone number on my account. After I had done that and made my payment and left the store, I received a text message on my phone. I asked my friend I was with if she knew the number. She does not know who it was, I replied by asking who it was. It was the manager at the Rent-A-Center that I rent my furniture from. In the end, I replied to the original message that he had sent me. After awhile, I got tired of asking who it was that was sending me text messages and just saved the number to my phone under Rent-A-Center.
Now we’re in June, his wife found out about it and now, I have been receiving harassing phone calls, text messages, and restricted calls. One comment that was made was "We know all about you". I notified the police about it and in turn they called and told the manager, his wife and her friend that they needed to stop all contact with me or charges will be filed. I thought the matter had dropped. The next day, it started all over again to the point that I received a phone call in the middle of the night, from a man that was drunk, looking for a ride home. He had gotten my phone number from Rent-A-Centers manager’s wife’s friend. They had no right to do that. I fear that since he was able to get my phone number off of my account, he also has access to the rest of my personal information such as my bank account number, debit card number, my social security number, home address, and my driver’s license number.
After the comment "We know all about you", I fear for my identity. I called the store and was looking for the district manager’s number and it was refused. So, I told them that they needed to take my phone number off of my account and they in turn, demanded that I set up a date to return the furniture. When I asked them if they would give me my money back, they came up with a resolution as to transfer my account to a different store. The young man that I had spoke with, told me that it was my fault that all this was happening, and I shouldn’t have ever sent the manager a text message in the first place.
Also, I receive phone calls several times a day before my payment is even due, to remind me that I need to pay them and are wanting a time and date when I will be in to pay.
I fear for my identity as well as my life. Especially, since I do not know what the females that threatened me look like. What will happen if I get jumped while going in to make a payment? Here in the state which I reside, any domestic confrontation like that and everyone is arrested. I get arrested, I will lose my job!

Not only was this item used, but it was scratched, and still had lint in the trap from the previous user.
I knew instantly that I was dealing with a bunch of creeps. So I went to the store with the dryer (I paid to have it delivered). Unfortunately, it seems that creating a scene, with the evidence in tow, gets people like Carlos to admit he was wrong. I was screaming at him, told him to take the dryer back, and cancel my contract. Once I informed him that I was going to call the police and have the store closed and every worker arrested for fraud, he became extremely agreeable.
There are too many complaints against Rent-A-Center. The only way to make them pay attention to your problems is to stop paying them altogether. Keep the crappy item they sent you, but do not pay them one dime. Naturally, first you must give them a chance to right their wrong. However, as soon as you feel they are ignoring you, simply give up just like they did. It is unfortunate that their parent company does not care. I honestly think it’s time we take a stand against these damn companies who screw their customers and do not care about their actions. My incident with the clothes dryer made me so upset, that my anxiety went through the roof and I had to be hospitalized to calm myself down and get my heart back in rhythm. So, can you please not post that? I do need any more headaches from them. I have filed a suit in court and will deal with them that way.

I rented a computer from Rent-A-Center. It went out. So after numerous calls, the area manager came down and gave me a computer in its place. About 2 weeks later, I went back to rent another computer cause the one they gave me was nothing like the one I had. They then started charging me rent on both of them. After paying it and being told it would be cleared up. I finally took it back. Then the manager finally called me and told me he was sorry, they do owe me a computer and to give him 2 days.
It's now been 12 days and nothing. I have called them daily with the promise that someone would call me. No one has called yet. I paid over $400 on a computer I owned to begin and over $2,500 on computers and still have no computers. They took them all back. I can't get anyone to help me or talk to me at all. I have all phone records with no call backs. Please help me. I was a seven year customer with them. When they were fixing my computer before, they gave me a new one which they charged me for they had it for about 10 days and never fixed it and charged me rent.

It was supposed to take over my payments until I found a job but instead, they just threatened to file charges. They pick up on a billboard and passed out flyers because everyone on my block knew they were not supposed to talk to anyone but me about my rental agreement. I am thinking of filing a lawsuit but I don't know exactly how to go about it.

In August of 2008, I went into their store and chose out a living room set and fridge. I was told the prices on both items and agreed when I thought I was almost closed to my 90-day same as cash. I called to check my balance. The amount that they had given me originally changed drastically. I immediately asked to speak with management. They told me there was nothing they could do because I had opted for new furniture. About three weeks after that, my couch broke. I called again. I told them if the furniture was new why it had broken so quickly. They said they would fix it and drop the price. About three weeks after that, they had someone come to my house and fix the couch.
Maybe two months after that, the couch had broken again from the same place. I was really upset and told them to please pick up the couches and I would not pay anymore until they were fixed and in new condition since that is what I was paying for. They picked up the couches and for almost 28 days I did not hear from them and I called every week to know the status and kept getting the runaround. Finally, they told me I would have to come in and make a payment before they would re-deliver. I made that payment on Wednesday and then had another payment due 2 or 3 days after that. They charged me for when the couches were not in my possession.
Here we are again, same problem. They called and harassed for payment but don't hold up their end of the contract. I have no resolution until now. The couches are in my possession waiting to be picked up for three weeks now and they are still asking for payment. This is ridiculous and emotionally distressing. And the story goes on and on. I have pictures of the damaged items they want me to pay for.

I keep receiving harassing calls about my account even when payments are made. I've explained to them that my paydays are on Tuesdays as well as receiving disability benefits for proudly serving my country for 11 years in the Navy. My account came due again today, 5-30-09. I've explained to the account rep that when the first of the month comes, I will make a 3-week payment. For as long as I have had this computer, they have constantly harassed me about it. I took it back for service and still got it back with the same hard drive because it had the same problem as before. I know a lot about computers.
They have threatened to come and take my computer. It's necessary and essential that I have this computer. It's more than half paid off and is the only way I can look for work. Being a disabled vet (not totally) is not easy. It's the only way I can get anything done, my only source of contact with people and they're telling me they are going to take that away because they can't wait till the first of June. I'm a combat-trained solider and the likelihood of someone coming into my residence to remove anything after I've explained to Rent-A-Center that payment will be made on the first would not be a good idea at this point and time in my life.

When I purchased the Ashley glass dinette set, it was under the agreement that I would pay it off in ninety days - same as cash. RAC was aware that I only get paid once a month because I am a teacher for Wake County. Upon arriving on May 29th to make my last payment, I was told by the manager that I was eleven days late and another $498.59 was immediately added to my purchase. I begged for a reprieve since I had no money until the end of each month. I asked her why didn't I get a courtesy call since my other payments were on time, and she said, "We do not do things like that and that it was my responsibility." I feel the consequences do not fit the action. It was only eleven days late and I had the full amount due each month. I had the full amount due for the ninety days. This is so unfair to tag on another approximately $500 considering my circumstances and since I begged for a reprieve.

This company calls me at least three times a day. My boyfriend and I made the mistake of renting to own furniture from them in December 2008 and never missed a payment (which was $434.00 monthly) until last month when I became very ill. We called, and my boyfriend visited them in person to let them know of our circumstances, and the calls continued. We always paid on time. They soon came and repossessed the furniture and call at least five times a day now and text message my cell phone, demanding payment. We explained our situation to each person that calls, and then we get another call within the hour from someone else. We are extremely upset about this constant telephone harassment. I am very ill and have been put on disability and will be having surgery soon, and these people continue to call several times a day. They obviously do not communicate with each other, and the management of this company is terrible. Each person we talk to gives us a whole different number of what we owe them. Please do not buy from them ever.

I have rented 3 items from this company, a queen size bed, a computer stand and a flat screen TV. The computer stand I rented (which was rented a month ago) dropped off the bottom part which holds the keyboard; it was stuck and would not pull out. The next day when I put my computer up and tried to pull it out, it would not come out. I called Rent A Center to come to fix it and they continued to to tell me someone would come out to fix it. They made several appointments with me to have someone to come out and no one showed up. They continued to say that they were short-handed.
So they continued not to charge me for about three weeks. I called Customer Service to complain and finally someone came out to take the part out around the 1st of the month. And said they had to order the part. To this day, I have not received the part. On Saturday, May 16th, I paid the bed up-to-date and walked into the store and told them that I don't have money to pay for the things any longer and that I wanted to have the items picked up. Since that date I have continuously called them to pick up the items and to this date they have not.
On 5/20/09, I received a letter from them stating that within 3 days, they need to hear from me or they will seek legal action. I immediately called, went into the store and told of this and told them I received this letter and they told me to disregard the letter, that they would pick up the items and to disregard the letter. I then asked the employee to give me something in writing stating that and the employee said that he didn't have anything to give me and that they would pick up the items on Thursday.
Upon leaving the store, they have a customer service no. posted on the wall to call. I called 1800-422-8186 at 5:55 to tell the Customer Service my problem. The lady told me that I would receive a phone call from the district manager within 24 hours to have it resolved. Well, he never called. On Thursday, Eric from Rent A Center called me in the afternoon to tell me that they wanted to know when they could pick up the items. I told them I would be home at 6:00 pm from work. He then told me someone would be at my home to pick up the items. At 6:20 I called them to see when they would be here. He told me that they were in La Habra and that as soon as they came back, they would be there. I then told him I needed them to get here because I needed to go to urgent care. He said he would call me after he got hold of the drivers. He never did.
And I forgot to mention that I live 1 minute walking distance from this company. There is no excuse for the stress that they have caused me and time wasted to wait for this company when no one shows up. I think this company is shady and they will try to take me to court so I have to pay the entire high price of these items I no longer want. Please help.

I am filing a complaint with the Rent-A-Center in Redding, California. I had a contract with them for a laptop computer, with payments of about $88.70 due on the 7th and the 22nd of each month. Even though my payments were always on time and sometimes paid before the due date, I consistently received calls, sometimes up to three or four calls per day, at home, at work and on my cell phone that my account was past due (a direct violation of the Fair Debt Collection Act, I believe). According to the specifications of my contract, my payments were never past due.
At times when I went into the store, the clerks claimed I was supposed to pay every two weeks, even though my contract was not set up that way and I was once asked to pay over $100 on my account, the clerk claiming that I owed for "extra days." I made my payment in April on the 21st (a day before it was due). In late April, I was hit with a car license renewal fee that was double what I was expecting it to be, so I called Rent-A-Center ahead of when my first May payment was due and spoke to Sandi to let her know of my circumstances. I asked her if it would be possible to get an extension on my first May payment and then pay the entire May bill (a little under $180) on the 22nd when I was next paid. Sandi said that she would have to ask permission to do that as it was something they didn't normally do. The next day, I got a call from Rent-A-Center saying my extension had been granted which I thought was marvelous.
But even though I was told the extension I had asked for was granted, I immediately started receiving telephone call after telephone call on my answering machine, my cell phone and work phone claiming I was past due. In one call that was made after 6:30 pm, a man named Lee demanded that I come into the store that night to make a payment. And on another occasion, another male employee stated that if I didn't pay up immediately, they were going to confiscate the laptop.
After days of this kind of harassment and threats, I called Rent-A-Center back and demanded an explanation. Instead, I got a runaround from Lee who then became frustrated after trying to convince me that a week had 5 days in it instead of 7 and turned me over to Sandi, who simply made more excuses for their screwed up billing system, refused to apologize for the harassing calls, stated that their company never gave extensions (but later let slip that the "district office" often did allow extensions), and again demanded payment immediately. Infuriated I told her I was going to file formal complaints against the company, and hung up the phone.
I have no doubt that if this company which is regularly changing the due dates on my contract (despite the fact that my contract states clearly that my payments are due on the 7th and the 22nd) is consistently harassing me with collection calls on an account which was never past due, and seemingly also refuses to acknowledge or honor their agreements is doing exactly the same thing to their other customers that they're doing to me. I believe a thorough investigation of this store's policies and procedures is necessary in order to safeguard consumers.

They call my house at least 10 times a day even if it's not late, or they show up at my house. Then one day, my husband told them, "That's it. Don't come here again. Just call us and let us know and we'll bring in the payment but don't come back here." Well, they came back. My husband told them if they come back, he will have them arrested.
So now, it's May 8th and Marcus calls. He said that there is a payment due. I said, "Okay. I'll be in." He then told me, "If you have $42, you can pay it off!" I told him I'll try but was not sure. I then went to pay my payment. I had $20 of the $42 Marcus said I owed. When I got there, the manager Amy told me $20 was not enough and she was not taking that. She told me I owed $27 in late fees and I needed $52 today or the dryer. I told her that I just talked to Marcus and he told me it was only $42 to pay it off. She then told me that it wasn't about the money, but she was worried about her guys because my husband was harassing them while at work. (My husband is a cop.) She tried telling me he was pulling them over for no reason and making racial comments to them.
Now, there's no way they could know he's a cop as I don't carry his last name and the contract is in my name. But because he told them not to come over or he would arrest them, they're now trying to say all of this and the manager said the mayor of the town he works in is her personal friend and is going to have him fired. Now I'm not sure what to do. I got one telling me it's only $42 to pay it off, then someone else telling me it's more and she's going after my husband's job. Can someone please tell me what to do now?!

I recently moved into a brand new luxury apartment and wanted to start all over with my furniture. So I came across the "Free til February 7th deal", and decided to call them. I had a lot of company coming over that weekend and I was told that I would receive my furniture on Friday after 5. Of course you probably guessed the furniture never made it that night, so I had a house full of guest and no furniture. So the next morning I called to check on the status, and the worker said they didn't have any paperwork on me and that the "Boss" was out on vacation and wouldn't be back in a week! I was told to do the process all over again and wait until the manager got back. I was furious. After the whole day of pulling teeth, the matter was solved and the furniture was delivered that night. I read the paperwork about the "Worry Free Guarantee", and as I was signing the paperwork I was given the price of the furniture: 1. Ashley Sofa/Loveseat- $1800; 2. LG 32" LCD/Stand- $2000.
This completely blew me away! Luckily there were a lot of sales on furniture and television set, I guess with it being Superbowl and tax season. We were able to pick out a full living room set and a bigger t.v. half the price of both figures put together. All within the "first week of possession", and saved a lot of money. I called Cory to have them come pick up the furniture, and she replied, "So what did ya'll just need it for that weekend or what?" and I told her we found furniture for a cheaper price. She replied, "Yeah. Well, nobody will be there until Monday." I said okay. It is now 2/17/2009. I made the call on 1/31/2009, and the furniture is just sitting in my dining area. I called one of the workers who delivered the furniture. He stated my name was not on the work order. I find this lady to be very unprofessional, it seems as if she was angry for me exercising my right to return the furniture, and is just leaving it there. I have placed many calls to have it picked up and it's still there.

My wife and I recently moved to a new area in Seattle and had no intention in purchasing furniture. We were actually in a showing center and drove by a Rent A Center. There was furniture outside wrapped in plastic and unwrapped. We thought it was a going out of business sale of some type so we parked and walked in. We slowly figured out what the place was about. We wanted a new dining room table and they just happened to have one on clearance for $125 dollars. We bought it cash. My wife also really liked a bedroom set and we didn't want to pay movers to bring ours from more than 300 miles away, so we decided to rent them.
Now, after they delivered the items, I noticed that there were multiple chips on the head board and the posts (it was a four post bed) and there was a piece missing on one of posts that made the bed look lopsided. We quickly called Chad, the Store Manager at the Lynwood, WA Store and he had someone come by and take a look at it. He then called me and told me that they would order the headboard alone. I was told it would be a few weeks, and 2 months later there still was no headboard. I really didn't mind because Chad was very communicative and kept me informed in the process. After almost three months, Chad calls me and asks me if I would mind selecting a different bedroom set. There was no cost difference and no added months to our payments. We actually like our new bedroom set than the other.
Rent A Center has been very professional with us, and Chad and his team have always been very nice and welcoming. I'm sorry to see that others have not had the great experience we are having. We will actually be going in tomorrow to look at a bunk bed. We could go someplace else, but hey, they have been good to us.

I am renting a fridge from Rent-A-Center. They came on Tuesday afternoon to drop it off. My husband and I both worked and Tues. and Wed. we did not get home till late. Well Thursday, my husband had the day off and went to clean the kitchen. He noticed that there were scratches on my three-week-old kitchen floor. He traced the scratches to under the fridge. There is also a gouge in the floor. When I got home from work, I was extremely mad. So I called Rent-A-Center and told them everything. The manager was out on an errand and the man I was talking to told me I must have very thin floors.
First of all, I don't care if it's thin. They should have been careful no matter what. Even though it doesn't matter, I got my floors from Lowe's and it was professionally installed. He told me the manager would call me that night when he got back. He never called me so I called back at the time they closed. The manager then told me to call the next morning and he would come out to take pictures. So the next day, it was raining. I went to work and so did my husband. I gave him a call when he told me to. Another manager answered the phone and said he was at the bank. He took my name and number and said he would call me as soon as he got back. Of course he never did.
So I called my husband to have him call to see if he could get anywhere with them. So when he called, the manager told him that they were waiting to see what the weather did. Excuse me, I am at work in the rain and my husband is installing cable in the rain. You are telling me you can't come into my home and take pictures because it's raining? Every time we call, we get the runaround and I am sick of it. I want something done now!

I purchased a table and chairs for my kitchen made by Ashley furniture. I have paid on it for approximately 6-8 months without it being delivered as I was still trying to sell the one I had. When the men came to deliver and setup they dropped the box in my doorway. After assembling the table and chairs and leaving my home, I noticed three of the chairs had legs that rocked and were not the same length. Two days later after cleaning the table top I noticed a crack in the table top. I called Rent A Center and the manager acted like she did not know what to tell me.
I called Ashley furniture and they told me that a new table and chairs should be sent to me and if Rent A Center did not know how to handle the problem they would tell them how to handle the problem. Rent A Center offered to bring me one from the show room floor. I told them this was not acceptable as the one I received was still in the box and not used. I am waiting to hear back.

First of all, every complaint I read is exaggerated. I used to work for Rent A Center. I ran 3 very successful stores and one in the top 10 of the company. I just left over a year ago to pursue other opportunities that were less stressful and hours. So I have no reason to be on their side. I will be honest with you all. Like mentioned in past comments about them, no matter how much money you put into the merchandise it is not yours until you make all or your payment, PERIOD!!! It is clearly stated on the Consumer Lease Agreement. Even if you paid over $4000.00 into it they have the right to pick it up if you can't pay the weekly or monthly payment, which ever you chose at the start of the contract. It sucks but oh well that's what you signed up for.
If you refuse to call them back even if they call you 4 times a day stop being a SCUMBAG and call them. They are reasonable and believe me they don't want to lose the account especially at these times. They will hold the merchandise for up to 30 days and if you don't believe them get it in writing or get the District Manager involved. The people who steal the merchandise are the reason for the high prices. They take serious risks on customers. Especially the ones with bad credit. I've seen almost every circumstance in the 8 yrs I worked there. There is no excuse. If you don't like the way the business is ran then don't do it with them. Very simple concept.

I ordered a bedroom set which includes box spring, mattress, headboard and footboard, end table, dresser, and mirror. They DID offer to send a repairman but I do not want a repairman. I want a new headboard since I'm expected to continue to pay. Why should I continue to pay for a broken headboard?
Now the headboard is starting to come apart at the seams on both sides at the bottom moving up. So I called and reported it. They came out to see the damage and said they would order another one but never did. So I called back and spoke to the store manager and he said he didn't see where it was ordered, but would order one right away. That has been about three to four weeks now and sill no headboard. Every time I go make my payment, I ask and they keep saying they don't know but keep harassing me about a payment but what about my headboard?

Due to illness, I got behind and the phone calls have been up to 10 a day, to include my last job, disclosing things to my contact people, calling hospitals in regards to me... making threats of coming with the sheriff to have whoever is home arrested. They are unprofessional, uncaring, lying... laughter and friends when things are going their way only. I do not wish to return any of the merchandise. I've paid too much.... Now that I have my income back, they are demanding all of it instead of allowing me to pick up where I left off. Also, on the bedroom suite, I never even signed a contract on that merchandise.

I've had nothing but good experience with RAC. They are awesome. They could drop the prices a little lower, but other than that, I’ve had no problems. I have a washer/dryer, stove, and a 42'' LCD TV from them. I have paid off my 52 in projection TV… I pay by the month, that way, I can keep up with my bills. I used to pay every 2 weeks, but that got too complicated and I usually forgot about it, till they called before closing. So, I pay on the 1st of every month.
Anyway, I live in Arkansas, and 2 weeks ago, it got very, very cold here. Well, a plastic pipe inside my washer froze and busted. I called RAC, and they came and picked it up and even brought me a BRAND NEW loaner for me to use until they get mine fixed. They're all very, very nice to me. I've had a few mishaps, but nothing extraordinary… Would I recommend them?... Of course, if your credit is bad, and don't have the money to buy one outright…

You should probably take a look at yourself before you start bashing rent to own... You should know what you are getting into before the process even starts. If not, then it's understandable why you need to rent and you have bad credit. Obviously you have made bad decisions in the past. It's explained in the beginning that you are to make on time payments. Just like any other bill, this one is not optional. No matter if you are 1, 2 or more than 3 days late... you will get a phone call. It's called communication. If you cannot make a payment on time, make a phone call and you will be worked with. Just because you have made 3 or 5 payments on a TV or whatever it is you are renting, does not make it your own. It is still Rent A Center property and we reserve the right to repossess it at anytime your payment is delinquent.
It is in the contract... Maybe you should take a look at it. A few months into your agreement you start to complain of the weekly fees...Well, this is what you signed up for. Maybe you should look into what you're doing before you do it. You are told your options before renting, and if it happens that you were not told, you always get a copy of your agreement. READ IT. If you can't afford your merch. anymore, RETURN it. It is not yours, and that is considered stealing. You can always pick up where you left off and we would be more than glad to hold it off for you.

When I asked her to leave my yard, she got mad and put the truck in reverse and drove through my yard trying to hit me and my children. The second time she did this, we jumped on the porch and my kids got skint up. She also tore up all the Christmas decorations.
I called the store and they did nothing about it since then she drives by at least three times a week and kicks wheels in my yard. I do not know if I should call the store again and complain or what since they will not stop her. She always does it when she is driving their truck. Bottom line they were being dishonest trying to charge me the full amount of 288.60 and that is being once again deceitful and sneaky until I noted that that was not the amount agreed on to pay this month. We are tired of all the arguing and bickering. Please try to reassign us to a store were feelings are not hurt when a customer is dissatisfied. On May 16, 2008 I had rent to own a queen size bed and the new worker read me all of the paper work. And when the representative read the paper work to me he just told me to sign all of the papers although I did not check yes for some kind of benefit club program because I told the guy that I didn't need that. He just told me to sign it so that his boss know that he had read everything to me.
Well when I went in June to pay my next payment, I went home and read my receipt and it stated that I was getting charge for a preferred customer club so I called Rudy at Rent-A-Center and told him about this and he said that I need to come in to sign a paper so that I don't have that. I explained to him about when I had sign up for my bed that the guy that was helping I told him I didn't want that but he said to sign it anyway although I didn't check the box to agree for that. He said that he has my signature and I said yeah because he told me to sign but I didn't check the box to receive it.
They been charging me every month after that and I did sign the paper with Rudy back in June and he said he was going to take care of it and not to worry about it so didn't until I seen my receipt again on 1/17/09 and it states that I am still paying for this program. I called Rudy about it and he told me that they don't have the paper that I had sign back in June but I told him that I did come in and sign that paper and you told me not to worry about it, he told me that I only signed a paper on 5/16/08 about the program and I said yeah I signed it because that's what the guy said to do but I didn't check the box to have the benefits. He said that I have to come in again and sign a form again, but why should I if I did already.
I have been paying for something that I didn't sign up for and he said that I would be able to get a refund. Plus this preferred club that I supposedly signed up for, if you sign up for something shouldn't you get something from what you are signing up for? Well in my case I didn't sign up for and I didn't receive anything for this benefit but yet I am paying for it. I just want to get refunded for this charge total of $112.40 since May 16, 2008.

If you know the system and that RAC cannot remove their merchandise even with the police there... you're a criminal in progress. Stop your complaining... get a job, make your payments on time and then the rest of us good customers won't suffer the consequences. I understand why they do what they do. Why do you think you can pay when you want? I happen to have good credit but choose not to have credit cards and I like the 90 same as cash. After paying on a television for over two years, I lost my job. There is no way I am going to give this back to them and just walk away, after paying over $4,000.00. I called and asked if I could delay a couple of payments, but I was told no, and they said they would come pick the TV up and all would be forgotten. Bull. You are not coming in my house. They said they would get the Police. So after paying that much money, I am supposed to give it back and walk away with nothing? I have no job and no money coming in because there are no jobs out there; it is bad enough to try to keep your home and the heat and lights on, and you have to deal with these idiots. I have had to sell my diamonds and other household goods just to pay them, because I refuse to lose the $4,000.00 I have paid them.
Also, they have your debit card number on file and take the payment out without even knowing if the funds are there (not legal to have this on file where anyone in the store can access this). God, what is this world coming to? It is bad enough out there, and then there's RAC, something no one needs. I understand they are there to help in a pinch, but to rip people off is wrong. I have never rented to own prior to this experience. I never HAD to rent to own and I still don't. However, I felt that renting to own would be much easier for the big purchases rather than saving for a few weeks. I now believe that saving is all the well worth it. The customer service is absolutely unacceptable. If you are even one day late on your payment, they will call your telephone number that you had provided around 8 times a day. This statement is not exaggerated. Sometimes they will call you almost every hour. They will also call your place of employment a few times as well. Thankfully, I am a manager and I happen to screen the calls at my place of work. If this occurs at a place that you are unable to have personal phone calls, this may be a problem for you.
The voice mails that they leave are quite intimidating. They are very rude when they leave their short lecture. I have never had a vehicle financing, credit card company, or rental property ever use the tone or rude lecture that I have experienced with this company no matter HOW many days that I happen to be late (let alone only ONE day late). They are also rude when they deliver your item to your house as well.
The cost is also not worth it. I opted to rent a PS3. After reading my contract, I quickly returned it and bought my own PS3 one week later. PS3's can be purchased through Best Buy at around $399.00. The cash price at Rent-A-Center is $831.74. You have three months to pay $831.74. If you do not pay this amount within 3 months, you will continue doing payments. At the end of these payments, you will have paid $1,663.48 for a PS3. I could have bought almost 4 PS3's with this amount. The hassle that you receive at this company and the amount that you pay for these items are outrageous!!! I will never choose to rent to own ever again.

I went to store to get bedroom set. At that time, there was a different store manager named Lewis. He did not have the king size frame that we wanted but had the rest of the furniture for the set. He said that he would order the frame for us. They delivered the rest of the bedroom set, gave us a contract, which we signed, and said that as soon as the bed frame came in, they would deliver it. The bed frame was delivered to us approx 6 weeks later. In the meantime, we continued to pay our rental fee. We ended up in financial trouble and they came and took the bedroom furniture on 1/12/09.
When I called to find out how much we had to give them to get the furniture back, I was told by Mark a different amount for the weekly rental rate. The contract that we signed was for $16.02 a week and he said that the contract that was in his system was $47.50 a week. I said that is not what my contract says. He proceeded to tell me that my contract was cancelled in their system and they created a new one. I told him that he couldn't do that and he said yes, he could. I demanded a copy of this so called new agreement that shows our signature and he says he can't find it. I told him that what they did was illegal and he brushed me off and told me to talk his district manager Chip.
When Chip returned my call yesterday, he told me that he was not going to show me any of the papers and that they had the furniture and if I wanted it back, I would have to sign a new agreement for the $47.50 a week. I asked him for the name of his supervisor, he told me Anthony ** who is the Regional Manger. I called the customer service line on 1/15/08 and requested that he call me back. Thank you for allowing me to vent my anger at the business practices of my local RAC. I have, for the past 15 years or so, been a very loyal customer, having purchased thousands of $$s in merchandise from them (wedding ring set, grandfather clock, 32"HD TV, an HP computer with flat screen monitor, 2 DVD players (1- a 5 disc), etc.). I even reached gold card status. I've even been paying extra $$ for a plan that is supposed to help in times of need; but apparently, it isn't set up that way (false advertising).
In November 2008, I became unemployed after sustaining a work-related back injury. I immediately notified my local RAC of the situation and they told me that they would work with me. I even mailed them a letter describing my situation and again asking them to work with me. The only response that I have gotten from them since then have been what I consider to be complete and total harassment, very unprofessional and immature. I feel hurt, embarrassed and violated by their business practices (very bad treatment).
First, I get 2 letters in the mail with different dates of termination and then I get a $10 coupon in the mail. Then one of the employees confronts my husband in another store and starts getting loud with him and airing our business for all to hear. The employees have been leaving loud, rude messages on our cell phones with different voices using the same name "Ray.” I’ve been getting "Missed You" tags left on my door and in my mailbox. They are calling 2-3 times a day, starting at 8am when their normal business hours do not start until 10am. They have been harassing my neighbors (like they would know our comings and goings), and have been calling my mother-in-law and harassing her.
Two years earlier I had a similar instance of abuse occur when RAC followed and harassed my children. Saturday night (1//10/2009), however, was the clincher (the last straw). RAC (both a truck and a van-more than one person) came to my home around 6pm and proceeded to bang and kick my front door like they were the SWAT team on a break-in mission. They hit my front door so hard that I felt it upstairs in my bathroom. They moved one of my porch chairs and peeked in my windows (invasion of privacy) and then began yelling obscenities (wanting their ** back). This abuse of authority continued for about an hour, so I proceeded to call the store to complain and he (the person on the phone) told me that the employees get paid by the hour and would stay there all night if necessary.
I told him that my husband had been sick and that I wasn't letting anybody in until he was in better health (he also suffers from a heart condition). The harassment continued which was causing undue stress on my husband who is disabled. What they (RAC) didn't know was that my daughter was visiting, who is 5 months pregnant and does not need that kind of stress to complicate an already sensitive condition. So after some continued harassment to my property, I will admit that I got rude and told the guy on the phone that if he didn't get his guys off my ** door that I was going to get them for harassment and for lying to me. Then I got up Sunday morning (1/11/2009) and found their RAC tags littered on my porch, a crumpled tag in the ashtray (on my porch), and tags stuck on every window of my car. I was so irate that I had to take pictures (in case I go to court).
This type of treatment, how immature and childish can someone be? I am planning to contact my local BBB because of this harassment. RAC has been nothing but unprofessional and the employees are crude and impolite. They feel that they are better than anyone else and that tough economic times will not hit their pockets. If I was their boss, I would have fired them long ago for unprofessionalism. Thanks again for allowing me to vent my anger.

After their attempts failed, they came to my house and beat on my doors and on my bedrooms windows very loudly. They hollered and said obscene things from the outside. I felt like that was unprofessional of them. I have been a very good customer to them and I didn't appreciate the way that they handled the situation.
I contacted the store manager and he basically told me that it was my fault and that I should have come to the door. But honestly, who wants to go to a door at 8 in the morning and someone beating on your door like they are crazy? I know that I should have opened the door, but I was very pissed off because I felt like they were trying to intimidate me. They scared my kids by knocking so hard on the windows and also disturbed my neighbors. I turned the TV back in to them and I vowed that I'll never do business with them anymore because they don't act tactful. If this was my business, I wouldn't want anybody working for me who behaves the way they did.
