Not only was I scammed out of money on their app, when I reported it to them they did nothing. I disputed with my credit card and my credit card company refunded me. Venmo suspended my account for disputing it, and getting my money back. They told me that the only way I would be able to use their app ever again was paying them back!!! Why on earth would they expect the person who was robbed to pay them back and not the man who scammed me out of money (I purchased a product that never came as did many others who also had to report him)? So, the point is if you get scammed out of money and report it to Venmo they will suspend your account. INSANE.

I was sent $200 from a woman whose van broke down and needed an alternator. I have the receipt for the alternator paid through my credit card. Fixed the van for free since she said she'd pay later but never did. Then over 2 1/2 months later a dispute pops up on my account saying I would be contacted about any questions, I never was. In only 5 days they resolved the dispute in her favor returning her the $200 and charging me, freezing my account. So no I'm expected to pay for the part that she still has in her van in order to unfreeze my account?? That's fraud and you idiots let it happen! I won't pay for your mistake!

On Thursday Morning, I placed my Cricut machine on Sale, and a buyer reached out. I asked her to send me the money through Venmo, and she did. That is when Venmo started asking for money; first, they asked for $2000, then $3000, then 5000, and the horror was not stopping. For additional details on this matter, please see all the messages that went back and forth. Please let me know if you need further information, and I will send you additional proof. I have over 100 emails going back and forth that can prove my case in court.

I have been a customer for a few years now. I don't use them much, but for some very strange reason, when I initiated a bank transfer for food for Thanksgiving; the app wouldn't let me use Instant Transfer; which I have always used. I then had to initiate a bank transfer; which I was told would drop into my account by the 22nd. I was needing the transfer for Thanksgiving. Well, Thanksgiving came and went and NOTHING and subsequently no Thanksgiving. I have had my bank account for over 23 years, not sure of the hold up. This is why I don't like to use this app. I will utilize other money transfer apps in the future. In the meantime, my transfer is apparently wandering in Outer space riding on a turkey wing and has been "gobbled" up in cyberspace.

My wife opened a Venmo account online and passed away a few months later. I (husband) contacted them to close the account, and then sent the death certificate in as requested. They then sent me a list of impossible requirements to complete to get this closed. None of it could be done online. She's dead and I'm trapped with an account attached to my checking that I cannot close. (I'm a Venmo hostage.) I had to instruct my bank to block transactions from them. I would recommend not initiating a Venmo account. You will be trapped with it forever.

I get a message back that due to high amount of payments ($600) that a hold is placed and that hold will release 4 days from the payment date November 11. Well that was November 15th or business days the 16th. Here I am on November 21st inquiring. I reply per your message saying it is over 4 days so explain that to me. I had money froze twice, had to have my funds refunded to my boss and had to open a new account for them to just freeze that account for "security" but no reason given for this and they will not even put my money back into my account connected to the Venmo account. This is the worst card I have ever had!!! These people have literally let me use my card one time and I have had the account, the first account for over 3 years but there was always an issue so it just sat dormant and then my boss started using it so I tried and the first time I got money sent they froze my account I had to open a new account which was fine until I put money in it and now it is frozen again but it was fine before the money was in the account. This company is awful! I have a wedding cake business and use Venmo because I offer services out of state. I have lost two major contracts because I have to wait on my money and it will not do instant transfer. The other day I was able to do a whopping 5 transfers for 300 dollars to get my money, and paid of 20 + dollars for the instant transfer fee, but could not do it in whole. It was a transfer for 2,000 dollars. I have processed three large payments. I have went thru the authorization process and gave them all of my information and it was approved. I sent money and tagged it as a loan. My daughter sent it back tagged as payback for the loan. Venmo took a fee from her to get it, took a fee from me to get her payback and wanted a fee for instant transfer. I have never had to pay a fee on someone paying me back but I have paid a fee to instant transfer into account. Both transactions are clearly marked but Venmo still justifies the fee as a sell.

I set up an account with Venmo about five years ago but never utilized the account ever because cash app is so much better. I actually forgot that I had an Venmo account. Then one evening suddenly I received an email saying that my 100-dollar transfer to a Rebecca ** has been successfully completed. I’m like what? First off I know no Rebecca’s, not one. So I log in to the old account for the first time since 2019 just out of curiosity to see what debit card was used to make the transaction. I never owned a debit card with the last four that’s listed on my account. Obviously, there’s some mistake here or obvious fraud.
When I disputed this transaction Venmo denied my dispute claiming that the transaction in question is consistent with all my other transactions. The only problem with that is, there are no other transactions on my account. The transaction in question is the only transaction on my account ever. I will not be using Venmo ever, in my opinion, they have a security breach or someone in their office is crooked and probably been stealing and getting away with it for a while.

I asked for my acct to be closed and the customer service rep today dismissed my request, and told me "Most likely the previous rep 10 months ago, told me mis-information to end the call." What the hell?
Paypal owns Venmo so I guess this is no surprise, as Paypal does nothing to prevent fraud and encourages active use of spoof paypal phone numbers and emails worldwide. I use PayPal for my business and personal with eBay, this company (both) need to be held accountable for organized fraud on a worldwide level. There are other options I can use instead of Venmo, however this does need to be looked into on a broader spectrum, vs my complaint. I've already submitted to BBB & FTC. I advise anyone else to do the same.
I see I cannot add screenshots of hundreds of pages of my dialog and responses to both companies to this review. For my business Venmo and Paypal, when submitting fraudulent spoof info, I've received NO response since starting this business 10 years ago. I'm 100% certain PayPal is perpetuating all of the spoofs, as they do NOTHING to shut down the exact same phone numbers and fake emails from the same addresses for 10 years? I've already submitted this to my attorney this a.m.for her to submit to FTC. I recommend the same for any business experiencing the same issues. What a waste of everyone's time.

I’ve used Venmo for years and have loved the ease of it. I’ve had no issues with them until recently. Both my credit card (not associated with Venmo) as well as my Venmo debit card numbers were stolen and hacked from someone online all within two days and were taken on a shopping spree. Luckily I have my notifications turned on whenever my Venmo card is used and as soon as two transactions came through that I did not do or recognize I went into my Venmo app and disabled my card and then proceeded to contact customer service. I let them know my debit card had been handed and I knew because my credit card was two days prior and I obviously did not mature the purchase. They canceled my card and sent me a new one. I submitted in a requests for a dispute to get the money back they had used and was told I would hear back from them from 1-10 days. In the same day I scouted the dispute they denied my disputes.
I called into customer service the next day asking for a reason why my disputes were denied. They said my card was somehow there when the person made the transaction. They resubmitted a new claim for me to relook at the disputes and 2 days later they continued to deny me my money back I DID NOT SPEND. Even though they can see I disabled my card and contacted customer support immediately after the transactions were made to cancel my card and request a new one they are letting some thief get away with my money and I don’t get it back.

Deceptive Practices and Misinformation by Venmo and Synchrony Bank - Proceed with Caution. My recent experience with Venmo and Synchrony Bank has left me utterly frustrated and disappointed. Both companies have shown a complete lack of transparency, misleading practices, and a disregard for customer satisfaction.
The primary issue arose when I attempted to deposit funds onto my Venmo credit card. Despite being assured that the process would take 1-3 business days, my money seemed to vanish into thin air. The balance on my Venmo credit card remained unchanged well beyond the promised timeframe, leaving me feeling cheated and taken advantage of.
What's worse is that Venmo failed to adequately disclose the potential risks associated with these deposit transactions. Nowhere in their terms or during the transaction did they bother to mention that deposits could be subjected to review, leading to potential freezing or removal of funds. This is a blatant breach of trust and a demonstration of their willingness to manipulate their customers' hard-earned money without proper warning.
In a world where financial transactions should be seamless and straightforward, the behavior of Venmo and Synchrony Bank is inexcusable. I strongly advise against using their services, as they have shown a blatant disregard for their customers' well-being and financial security. Seek out more reputable and transparent alternatives that actually value their customers and provide honest, accurate information. Don't fall victim to the misleading tactics employed by these companies; your hard-earned money deserves better treatment than this.

Venmo said they’ll get back to me in 5-7 days regarding a refund. They email me days later telling me they cannot give me a refund because once you pay someone they can’t give you a refund unless the user you sent the money to let’s you get the money back. Well duh nobody you send money to is going to say hey you can have it back. It was a scam and an imposter account!
They told me I was speculating and they can’t help me. Bunch of **. All the people I talked to didn’t even speak English very well so I’m sure they didn’t even understand what I was trying to tell them. Such a disappointment. That’s a lot of money I lost too. Venmo has had my money tied up for 7 days now. Their system detected suspicious activity. I had money coming in last Thursday that was for bills. I tried to do an instant transfer which I had done literally I don't know how many times this past month with no issues. They flagged my account. Would not let me do the transfer. Would not let me transfer the money to a friend of mine who has a Venmo account so she could go to the ATM and pull it off her card so I can pay my bills. They would not let me use the money in the Venmo account online. It was basically frozen. I have emailed. I have called. I have chatted with the chat bot. I've chatted with agents. Several have promised to do things, check into other solutions where I could get this money. They never follow through.
I never get any answers on questions that I've asked and I do have proof of all this. We are now a week into this. I have submitted my ID. I have taken a picture of me holding my ID. They asked me to change my password. I've done that twice. I've offered my birth certificate and no results. They tell me that their account specialists are reviewing my account and that could take up to two weeks. It seems to me if their system detected suspicious activity, which there has not been, but then I would be a little more persistent in wanting to fix my account. They're very lackadaisical in responding to your requests for help. I was told by one agent that he would give me daily updates of what was happening with my account. He never replied or email me again.
I was told about an emergency fund where they're able to free up the money while they continue to look into my account. That agent never got back in touch with me about yes they could do it or no they could not. I have submitted everything that they have asked of me and it's day 7 and I have no clue what happened. I know that I don't transfer or get that much money in or out of my Venmo account so I know I didn't violate their user agreement. And this is really caused havoc in my life right now. I can't pay my bills. One of which was my room rent where I'm I live. They just don't seem to care about the customers and they also know real solutions in a timely manner. No comments on the Venmo tool. The comments is based on the support team. If you are not involved in any suspicious hacker activities, good for you and hope you know when you need some support, the team is super bad. The unprofessional team will keep repeating the same thing you ask and not giving you any solutions, not even actions. In a simple words, they probably have a guideline of how to answer questions which would be similar to the FAQ page, and they will just repeat them. Even HANG UP the call?? Why not train some professional and useful customer service agents? Why not give some authority for the Senior Agents so they can help resolve the issue during the call? *No support, no clarification, no professional agents.*

The help function on the site was a series of common problems, none of which related to my problem. I attempted to use the "Contact Us" function. After filling out a form and describing the problem, I received an email with links to three of the "common problems" that I had already seen as not helpful. I was forced to read each of the useless sections and click "Not related..." on each of them. Only then was I able to attempt to contact an actual human. No response yet. Useless.

Why I gave Venmo a Zero when asked if I would recommend Venmo to others: In general, customer service sucks at non-bank/money transfer institutions like Venmo. Here's my own past experience, and this latest experience w/ Venmo is further proof that your laissez-faire, nonchalant CSR sucks. My brother was sending me money for my rent deposit. I need it by tomorrow. He initiated the transfer two days ago. He was told to wait for his bank to return his funds because I cannot claim it. I cannot change my phone number to match the phone number that he used as part of the ID verification process. This, in spite of the fact that he used my Venmo username. Why am I unable to change my phone number? Because Venmo requires a cell ph#, not just any number that accepts text msg. Where, in your documentation, do you make it clear to your customer that you require a cell ph#?
As a result of this screw-up, I have generated the following narratives. I hope you can learn from them. Until then, I will continue to mistrust non-bank and money transfer orgs, not because their tech sucks, but, because of their need to keep costs low, their CSR sucks big time. Tech is not 100% foolproof, and orgs like you should provide an easier way to resolve that 0.0001% of transactions that get messed up because of human error. The answer is easy: make another human available to fix the problem. Stop relying on FAQ's and, heaven forbid, AI, to solve these problems. In the end, a trained human operator is much better at solving these kinds of problems that are outliers.
I would really appreciate a response (not a form letter) to my comment. I have taken this time to give you a more in-depth critique of your company. I hope someone can take a few minutes of their time to tell me what you are doing to address my complaint. Note: One month later (April 26, 2023), I have yet to receive any kind of response, even a form letter, from Venmo.

Venmo funded the $750 to the Phishing scammer, then was refused payment by my bank. Venmo refused my dispute, twice, and is demanding payment from me, and froze my Venmo account. The first time it took several weeks to unfreeze my account. This second time, it’s now been over a week but they see that I submitted my info and they’re working on it. They send help links completely unrelated to the issue.
I finally found a phone number to call where they assure me that someone is working in it and while the person on the phone can see that I’ve submitted everything over a week ago they are not authorized to unfreeze my account. I believe that Venmo is using this ploy to hold funds hostage and prevent people from getting access, all while claiming that they are working on the problem, based on the sheer volume of people I see having the same issue.

I have sent in every document that you could think of as my personal details that I was uncomfortable about really sending because they require you to send too much and then still yet give you a hassle of getting into your bank account to transfer you all to a technical support department above them supposedly. But yet what is customer support there for? They don't do anything to help you at all but waste your time from once upon months and you still are not able to get into your account if needed.
They keep your money. They make it impossible for you to get your funds out if you make one mistake like change your phone number or forget an email address or lose access to either one. Kiss your money goodbye kiss, your bank details goodbye. They keep it on you. Far too many mistakes and lack of care. I am two steps away from suing this company. I’ve now had two instances in which my attempt to transfer money to a friend or family member has been blocked - one time my account was frozen with no explanation and the second time I simply got a screen that said they were unable to allow my transaction, try again later. Again, no idea what rule I may have violated. In the first instance I had to wait 9 days for an answer.
Why can’t a company like Venmo program their business requirements so that when you’ve violated them you can correct your error and complete transactions? For example, if you have exceeded the dollar amount of transfers in a week, why can’t the software be designed to take you to a screen that lets you know that is the problem and the way to correct the error. Clearly they have the business rules coded behind the scenes. What would it take to provide on-line access and ways to comply with their business requirements?
Why would the company expose its support staff to the annoyance and frustration of customers when there is nothing, nothing the poor customer service person can do except to say “I can understand how frustrated you must feel.” I’ve closed my account with Venmo because a company that promotes fast peer to peer money transfer and then can’t provide the user software and the support desk software to facilitate what they promote doesn’t deserve our business.

I was able to get back into my account after three days, but they sent an email to me that says I have to wait 6-7 days for another representative to look at security setbacks before they can help. There is no option to speak to a person on the phone, only prompts that tell you to go to their help page...and never any specific information on why they are restricting my account....only a message that says the account is frozen due to security alerts.
All I did is request access to the money sent to me. I can't use this service to pay the bills or make the purchases the emergency money sent to me was for. Venmo's website and app need some serious rehauling. The website would not let me make any transactions, or give out reasons why. (Simple statement like "overdraft" or "verification" would help, instead it's just... dead.) A friend tells me maybe my account is frozen. So I looked at their FAQ and how to deal with frozen accounts. Their step-by-step guide didn't help, since their order of operations for the common frozen account is "Click on your balance, click on your card and click on "Make payment" to pay overdraft." Only for -MY- balance and card only showing "remove card." Again this doesn't help me. I don't know why my account is frozen, but finally, I found an FAQ for being frozen with "you didn't verify your account."
Well according to their FAQ action guide, I had to INSTALL their damn app on my phone (Something I was not happy to do) and when I did that I finally get a reason. Yes my account is frozen, yes I need to verify. Yes I can click on this link in the app to see how to unfreeze my account. Only to find out that "No they cannot unfreeze at this time, I need to send an email to their help desk to unfreeze my account." By the gods. This alone is warrant of three maybe two stars, but what really drove me angry and pissed off is their auto-response emails.
I was excited thinking their customer service was fast or their auto-response program can help me get unfrozen. Instead I get a damn FAQ email. "Ohh looks like you having problems with 'verification'." Here's some of our top FAQs on how to verify your account. And they gave me five bullet point of how to verify my account. With their first bullet point being "At this time you cannot verify your account by yourself. You need to email us at Venmo/com/emialverificationhelprequest.'com" (Or whatever their damn email is.)
I hate companies that keep giving you the runaround. Especially when it's something this stupid. I realize there needs to be some security when it comes to transactions with real world money, but the website doesn't give any reason why an account is nonfunctional, their FAQ needs to be updated as it seems this was written five years ago and have not updated with any new changes, and their email response system makes no god damn sense. Why send an email of the top FAQ related to a topic when that person was just there? And finally why is their verification process so buggy? When I need to verify myself, why do I need an auto-response email about FAQs in regards to verification? Vemno was decent as a transaction company but now I will avoid it at all costs.

We de-linked our account and tried to close the Venmo account. It was frozen. We discovered Venmo had deposited thousands of dollars in our bank and wanted it back. When reactivated the bank link Venmo would not allow us to use it to pay them. And of course, you can’t call anyone.

I have been getting declined on my payments. I have plenty of funds in my bank account and yet it's been over a week and my payment requests keep getting declined with no explanations. Venmo customer service is of no help. I have been getting the same answers from various agents telling me that due to security they cannot tell me what is the problem.
This morning's email from one of the agents says that they only see what I see and that is "Decline" but they have not other screen or any other information. I keep asking to be connected to a senior "tech" customer service agent but with no success. This should not be allowed. There should be some law that makes Venmo having to answer the reason for the problem and solve the issue. I have even talked on the phone to them a couple of times but with no success.

I emailed customer support and they told me due to “suspicious activity” (the account was just created!!!) I would need to send them a copy of my driver's license to verify that I was who I was. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY ORGANIZATION ASK ME FOR A PICTURE OF MY DRIVER'S LISCENSE! There have ALWAYS been other ways to verify who I was. I do not feel comfortable sending them a copy of my license. I requested that they figure out another way to confirm my identity – i.e.: text me a digital code that I need to enter into my account, a secret password, an answer to a secret question. But No. They want a picture of my driver license!

I called Venmo to see what was the issue and the rep told me nothing is wrong try the 1-3 day bank transfer and I did. Two days later I receive an email saying my account was frozen. I called customer service and was told my money transfer wouldn’t affected since I initiated the transfer before the account was frozen and that an account specialist will reach out to me in 2-3 business days regarding why my account was frozen. I received an email Monday morning asking for my ID and bank statement. I sent my statement Monday. I received another email on Tuesday asking for the same info. I sent my statement again.
I received another email on Wednesday asking for my statement so I resent it. Thursday I received an email saying my account (which I’m transferring the money to) is verified but since I had my business account on file (I erased the account from Venmo before I was asked to provide bank statement) they requested my business bank statement. I sent over my business bank statement and have yet to hear from them about my money. I have received over draft fees from my bank because I made bill payments thinking the money would have cleared my account by now.
I have asked for this transfer to be cancelled so I can refund my roommate and he can give me the money another way and was told they cannot cancel the transfer. Got an email solicitation from PayPal to open a Venmo account and I'd get $10. But I never got the $10. I looked into the offer on the internet to see if it was a scam and turns out many others didn't get it, either. Not only that, but seems there are a lot of problems with funding and transfers, with bad customer service. So I never added funding info or used the account. I tried to close it but it said my account was frozen. I've spent so much time emailing and then an hour calling but they can't/won't help me. The support call center is just an answering service, basically. They can't do anything (and often don't respond to emails or send automated replies) and must send my problem to an "account specialist".
So this brand new account, with no activity and no funding, is "frozen" and can't be closed, needs a "case", and "investigation" in order to get it closed. Plus I had to send a photo of my ID to "verify" my account, which I have never heard of having to do that before. So I don't trust them and I want this account closed. I threatened to close my 20 yr old PayPal account over it, as PayPal owns Venmo and got me into this mess, and which I did end up closing today (with no "frozen" nonsense, was instant).
I won't do business with anyone (Venmo) who only has an answering service for support (and endless hold), or their parent company (PayPal), esp when it involves banks and money. If there is a problem, you need to be able to call and talk to someone who can fix it, like all other support I use (imagine if my bank was like this!). So beware and do an internet search before you open a Venmo account, like I should have done. As it is, I will have to keep wasting time and energy to get this Venmo account closed.

Their basic response was: "Venmo is designed for payments between friends and people who trust each other. Avoid payments to people you don't know, especially if it involves a sale for goods and services (like event tickets and Craigslist items). These payments are potentially high risk, and you could lose your money without getting what you paid for. Venmo does not offer buyer or seller protection." They were NOT lying! I tried a million times over a 2 day period, same message. The person I chatted with could not or would not tell me when my transactions would not go through. I tried multiple people and different amounts. Just rejected. Second chat: "Sorry, that's actually the account security team, and they only do emails. No one is there right now so they'll get back to you tomorrow."
FIVE DAYS LATER they email me back after I keep emailing about the fact that I need my account unlocked and it never should have been locked to begin with. Then they tell me I need to go through some insane security protocol including uploading a valid ID and me *holding* the valid ID, two separate photos. All because they don't have the account security teams doing chats, and I had to wait four days longer than they initially told me I'd have to wait. The issue is now "resolved" but the person that last handled my case, "Roxy", refused to answer me after several attempts to get the name and phone number of a human being I could speak to about this awful, unnecessary experience. I open an account in October with Venmo about to be a year. On July 2, 2021, I realize Venmo does not refund funds to cardholder's account. You have to create a ticket, dispute, or something to receive your refund. Unrealistic for customers having to go through such process with everything else going on in the world. Customer service tries to blame the merchant for the problem when clearly Venmo is pocketing cardholder's money. If you’re unaware of this process you will be out of your refund.
For over 12 days I was waiting for a refund from a purchase I made 06/20/21. I went to Dillards to exchange some shoes when learning they didn’t have them in the size. I request a refund as of today refund haven’t been deposit. Along with several other refunds. I asked around about this to the persons who introduced me to Venmo. She was unaware of this process and has open up many questions about her refunds for the past few years. Venmo has been keeping many cardholders refund if unaware it remains in their pockets and the cardholders are out of their money. I learned somehow customer service making excuses about this process as a dispute no way you should have to dispute a refund when it should be just deposit back to your account.
Seeking to find a way to avoid this process for cardholders and to retain all cardholders who has been victimized by this not receiving their refund. I been chatting with several representatives about this matter none has been able to resolve my Dillards issue over $300 purchase. Unable to speak to a live agent even during working hours what has this world come to. Look into refunds and file a dispute claim ticket etc to get your money.

Three years ago, my wife and I decided to open a credit union account for our minor autistic son, to help teach him about money management, and to allow him to establish a relationship with a financial institution. It's also a good place to deposit checks that friends and family give him on various occasions. The account has basically sat dormant (credit unions are usually fine with this) over the years, and when my wife recently signed in to get things ready to transfer over to him when he turns 18, she found out that someone had attempted to use his account with Venmo, starting in March of this year. My wife and I are both security professionals and technical consultants, and were shocked to see the familiar verification deposits and withdrawals, and three deposits.
After attempting to contact Venmo about the issue, we were directed to talk to our bank. Well, the bank account information is locked in a secure safe - no one but my wife has ever accessed the account - and none of us has interacted with Venmo. Likely? Someone flipped two digits when entering their account number, and the deposits started going into his account. But the question I keep asking Venmo is: why did you allow ANY interaction with m son's account without FIRST fully verifying the account is owned by the person who entered it into Venmo?
We shared a screenshot of the credit union account history with Venmo customer service, so they could see the partially redacted account number, and the verification deposits and withdrawals, and the deposit amounts, including all the transaction numbers. Venmo SHOULD have been able to see what the problem was, and corrected it, by removing my son's account number from the Venmo user's account. But they did not.
Venmo is likely violating banking laws by allowing someone to fraudulently (or accidentally?) interact with a bank account just by entering the wrong number (again, either intentionally or accidentally). This should never be allowed to happen. The credit union account is well-secured, has not been hacked, and all information is locked in a safe. We haven't written checks, or used the debit card. No possibility of a leak.
Why is Venmo so bad at customer service and security? Would absolutely give Venmo negative stars if I could. Venmo: get your act together. You've wasted a week of my family's time, cost us hundreds of dollars of lost opportunity, and now my son has to get a different account number, just because your security is so bad.
