I made the mistake of using Venmo NEVER AGAIN!! Venmo declined too many of my purchases when I had more than ENOUGH FUNDS to cover the transactions. Each time I would reach out as to why my card was declining they would say SECURITY FLAG and all transactions are reviewed blah, blah, blah. How can you possibly tell someone how to spend their hard EARNED money. I get up and go to a job to receive a PAYCHECK. I can swipe the whole check in one day if I like. AGAIN it’s my money
Today Venmo declined my transaction while I was out shopping for my daughter's birthday. Talk about complete EMBARRASSMENT and CONFUSION knowing I had the money but couldn’t access it because again Venmo kept saying SECURITY FLAG. I called, couldn’t get in touch with nobody, waited on hold and even did the call back feature. I went on the app, chatted with MATT. He couldn’t help me. He kept saying SECURITY FLAG. I asked if my card was locked. He said it wasn’t activated like WHAT??!! The entire STAFF and APP is HORRIBLE!!!! They denied my instant transfer and ATM withdrawal said the only option I had was a standard transfer. I am beyond upset. it’s my daughter's birthday and I don’t have access to my money because of VENMO

My account has been frozen and unfrozen for absolutely no reason. I sent my proof of identity as verification. I also sent the bank statements that were requested. I circled and highlighted the information that was requested that shows I have access to these accounts. I am sending this from my home address in the US. I don't know what else they need but this has taken its toll on my finances already. My account was frozen, unfrozen, then refrozen all for completely fabricated reasons. The Customer Service is the worst and the website is a runaround.

Offshore customer service who doesn't speak English well, and asked me 3 times how they could help me. EACH TIME they said they were looking at my account, then came back and asked again how they could help. Either they weren't paying attention, or were working on something else while talking to me. Plus, they pulled money out of my account, then said it didn't go through, and I had a 'repayment' to unfreeze the account.

Impossible to link Venmo to one’s bank, even if it shows that it is! Money from a client is NOT coming through. Went through the whole Venmo process of trying to remedy the situation via chat. Nothing! Then called and called, was put on hold then hung up on REPEATEDLY! Where is my money? Floating out there in the ethers I suppose. Negligent and corrupt like our broken system.

Purchased a generator from a friend selling it on FB, within an hour realized that her FB account was hacked. Reported this to Venmo immediately. They said no problem, took all my info and then sent an email after a week saying that they couldn’t help me, basically I was SOL. This was my second transaction with Venmo, they said also said I should have done it differently and kept going over what I could have done instead, etc. I am out $500 of my hard-earned money and vey disappointed. Unbelievably bad service and resolution. My account is closed. I recommend you do the same.

Everybody watch out at this bank. I have use this bank through a debit card to get a rental car online. I never went to pick up the car and I never used it so I have decided to cancel that. I called the rental company and they said they will give me a full refund that it’ll take from 5 to 10 business days after the 10 business days I never received anything. I called them back and explained what happened and they say will dispute it that And will give me a response in 10 days.
After 10 days they said that a dispute was declined because they find out that this was not in their favor. I tried to talk to them over the phone and didn’t give me any explanation and I requested to speak to supervisor. They put me on hold for like 20 minutes and then they hang up on me. Seriously if I’m not getting my money I’m gonna have to take a legal action against this bank. I will take an action against them and the rental company because they are robbing me. You people watch out for them. They’re scammers and below. I’m attaching photos of the transaction that I was charged

Venmo is a symptom of gross market degeneracy. This is a monopoly of non-bank transfer providers that just sucks at what it does: constant payment declines, literally non-existent customer support and completely unintuitive account setup (verifying is required to send reasonable amounts of money, but you are not told this anywhere during setup). It doesn't get worse than this; someone bust this monopoly PLEASE.

Trying to update my phone number on Venmo has been one of the most frustrating experiences I’ve had with any app — and I’ve been dealing with it since January. Instead of a simple verification process, I’ve been stuck in a never-ending loop of back-and-forth with customer support. They required me to send in a photo of my ID, wait for a verification call, and jump through a bunch of unnecessary hoops — just to change a phone number. Most actual banks don’t even require this level of hassle for much more sensitive updates. It's overkill for a payment app. There’s no clear timeline, no real resolution, and after months, I’m still stuck. It’s ridiculous. Venmo needs to seriously rethink its customer service process — especially for something as basic as updating account info.

I spoke with Ed P. from customer service today, and he was absolutely rude and condescending. He asked me to send him a screenshot of an email I received from Venmo. Once he receives the email, he says "see, here" and begins to read the email back to me word for word as if I'm illiterate or uneducated. As someone with a Ph.D., I would not dare speak to my students like that nor anyone else I am supposed to be assisting.
What makes it worse, what he was reading to me had nothing to do with the question I was trying to ask. And I say "trying" because multiple times during the call, he would interrupt while I was speaking, to the point where I had to ask "may I finish my sentence please?" I think this could have been a short and pleasant call. But Ed P made the call longer and hostile. I hope he has the opportunity to grow. This was one of the worst customer service experiences I have encountered. I hope the company can do better.

Open a Venmo account and it has disabled me from sending or receiving money on two separate occasions with no explanation given to me. It’s been an extremely frustrating experience. I currently have money on there that is being held that I’m not being allowed to access. With very little Customer support or explanation being given to me. I would’ve never opened a Venmo. Had I known that it was gonna be so difficult just to transfer money, receive money or really do anything with my account. It’s really actually been a nightmare. I would definitely never recommend anyone to Venmo. If it was possible to give Venmo a negative star review I would.

If you can help not using this app please don't or you'll be disappointed. I'm fighting with Venmo now for 100.55 that they say I owe them. It's bull$@$^. They know it's bull because it happens a week before this week and it took another week to get me 54 back to me. If you are using Venmo don't link any other cards with them. I linked my Venmo with another app and used Venmo as a back up card to pay online. Well it worked for a few transactions until they locked my account saying I owe them 100.55. I called customer support and told them how in the hell would they pay Coinbase if I didn't have $ in my account. I also told the agent that venmo don't ever let me over overdraft so how can this happen. It's lies, they are thieves and liars. Don't use them. You'll regret it.

They do not honor the purchase protection they claim stating because I used their debit card to make the purchase, but that is one of the requirements. All requirements were met and they said, "We wish we could tell you why it's not covered, but we don't know." Never have I heard such an excuse! Horrible customer service and blatantly lie to customers. When asked, they claim they have no oversight and no complaints can be made. I urge others to contact the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau who does regulate Venmo and make a formal complaint when your rights are violated, as they do often. They will deny things they have said in black and white and get away with it because people don't know how to report them. Help stop bad business!

Do not create an account with them. Someone hacked into mine and they wanted me to jump through hoops to get that resolved. Go to a bank instead or use Western Union. You can also do a bank to bank transfer. I just wanted them to put a fraud alert and it is sooooo hard to do. Do not do any business with them.

Venmo has become a haven for scammers. After recognizing a fraudulent transaction, I promptly canceled the payment. Yet, without my authorization, Venmo charged a different credit card on my account to complete the very payment I had blocked. When it comes to sending promotional texts about credit cards and other services, they never fail to reach me. But when it's time to protect users from fraud—even after I took the initiative to stop the scam—Venmo chose to side with the scammer by charging me anyway.
At this point, it’s hard to tell who the real threat is. If a scammer doesn’t succeed in taking your money, Venmo might do it for them. With access to your financial information, their failure to act in the user's interest feels less like negligence and more like a business model. (I attached the picture with the name of the street scammer.... the other scammer is Venmo itself!)

I've been a Bancorp Bank member since 2015. I found a weird transaction on my statement and wanted more help on it. Well the chat lady froze my account without telling me, now they won't unfreeze it cause my ID is expired. The chat rep for Venmo said me telling them the reason behind my ID being expired will allow Venmo specialist to exempt me 'cause I am DISABLED for my many complex health problems including I CAN'T LEGALLY drive due to having multiple forms of epilepsy. So I can't get there to update my ID due to that. The name to my account is me and my ID states it's my name.
The emails from Venmo states that Venmo can ask me questions to help them know it's truly me but then I get told they don't ask questions to valid your identity to your account. I NEVER had any issues in the 10 years I've had this bank but at this point I'm so ANGRY. And afraid they won't give me the money that is sitting there in that account. Help me!! Screenshots below are between me and a chat rep. Why aren't you honoring what he said to me????

They took my money no problem from my bank to my Venmo account, but once it was on there they decided to lock my account. After sending proof of who I was (driver's license) they told me I was now permanently locked and they wouldn't be sending my money back for 180 days. I asked how to appeal and was ignored. So I contacted them by phone, that person was great, the next day when they claim to be closed and no able to respond to calls or emails, they emailed me to say the same as before. So, I will contact Synchrony Bank (their banking institution) directly on Monday and I have filled with BBB. I would give them 0 or less if I could.

My experience with Venmo has been absolutely disgraceful. My account is still locked even though I’ve submitted all the necessary evidence—including confirmation that the person who fraudulently disputed the payment has cancelled the dispute. Venmo has everything it needs to release my account, yet nothing is being done.
Every time I call or chat in, I get the same useless runaround. I’m told it’s being “escalated to the team that can help,” but no one ever follows up. It’s a dead-end loop designed to pacify, not resolve. It’s become clear this isn’t just incompetence—it feels deliberate. I’m extremely concerned that Venmo is intentionally holding onto the money instead of doing what’s right. Instead of holding the person who lied accountable, you’ve chosen to penalize me—the victim. I will never recommend Venmo to anyone. In fact, I’ll go out of my way to ensure others know just how broken, negligent, and potentially unethical this system really is.

I have set up many transactions on VENMO, and as long as thing go smoothly, there is no problem. However, I was sent money to be reimbursed for a car purchase that should have been "Friends and Family". There was a charge that I could not reverse. This can easily be done in PayPal. There is no live tech support I could find. The 1-800 number with 8:00AM-10:00PM hours was an automated joke. I tried every way possible to see if the charges could be reversed. After reading online others' experiences, I believe once a transaction is made it is final as to the charges and the designation as a business transaction.
It is obvious that any service you get from VENMO must be carefully done. The person reimbursing the money was not a business account, nor do I have a business account. However, the transaction by default labeled it "Business", and I will now get a 1099-K. Thank you POTUS Biden for your ridiculous rule, and POTUS Trump for not reversing this in your Big Beautiful Bill.

Be sure you select Remember this Device, or you'll have to wait for a verification code every time they bump you off the site. Instructions directed me to tap on buttons that didn't exist (do designers and copywriters ever actually talk to each other anymore?). I got multiple messages from Venmo touting their security. Great. But all I wanted to do was send a friend a few bucks. After an hour (and repeated log-ins) I closed the account and sent my friend a check. Then today I received an email telling me that they regret to inform me that been banned from their service permanently without any explanation as to why. So I called them and the girl told me that they would not allow me to do an instant transfer that I had to do a transfer that would take three days. So I agree to do that then they suspended my account because of too much activity. I don’t like how they want all my information over the phone or through the app. I don’t like putting my private information and banking account information on public websites or even through the phones, you never know who you’re talking to.
I tried this morning to look at my account when it should’ve been there and of course it was not. I wind it up calling again and found that I had to redo the transaction all over again. The service is horrible. They literally are taking cash money not a check from one account and putting it into another. They don’t have to wait for it to clear because they are taking cash. This was such an absolute headache to get the money. I use PayPal and it is the only service that I will continue to use for Apple Pay. Both of them are done within seconds there is no complications. I explained, again, that the company had charged my card more than I agreed to pay. The woman on the phone at Venmo said, ‘Ya, but how are you going to prove that?’ I’ve had only one other time where I had a company charge my card without my permission and my credit card company took care of the charge and I never had to worry about it - they had my back. I think I am going to have to leave Venmo. It seems that many people refuse to accept payments that way. Recently, I have noticed that when a payment is made, I do not receive the full amount because some kind of fee is deducted. I would think that such a transaction is akin to writing a check. Under the UCC, any fees should be assessed against the drafter of any such transaction. Fees should not be charged to the person receiving the payment.
Second, under the Venmo disclaimers, they will not enter into any transaction involving scam sales. Further they advise against using venmo for buying and selling, it seems. Now, let's take a closer look: I presume the name venmo comes from two words, vend (to sell) and money. Their name belies the disclaimer. They would certainly gain more credibility if they would enter into eradicating scammers. PayPal is certainly good about that, and it is unfortunate that they have washed their hands of the mess.

I've used venmo for 3 months and have completed over 30 payments. At venmo's suggested I've added an alternate payment method. This client has received payments from others. This client sent me a request for payment and venmo blocked payment. I've "friended" this client and venmo blocks payment. This client sent me $1.00 and it came through normally. The $1.00 in now in my bank.
When I try the Chatbot a blank window open and never populates! NOT helpful. There clearly is a DEFECT in venmo software and they refuse to address it. It takes an act of Congress to even be able to put money on the thing unless you have the perfect checking account but that's only after you establish some type of credibility with them that you're checking accounts good before they release you the funds immediately. All they are is a sister account to PayPal and yet you can't add money from PayPal to them. Or vice versa. You can't add cash unless you go to a specific store and then you have to do it a special way or it's almost impossible. Not to mention that ungodly amount of fees they charge just to do anything with them. If I have to pay somebody by venmo I have actually driven almost 35 miles one way just to pay somebody in cash because it was simpler and cheaper than it was to send it via venmo because of the hassle I would have to do to get the money on my card to get it to them.

Because I already had $27 in the account, I lost half the money for the transaction off the bat. When I realized what had happened immediately after the purchase, I contacted Venmo and they refused to help. There is ZERO support built in for victims of scam UNLESS you click the toggle button saying it’s a business transaction. If you don’t know about that switch or what it’s for, consider yourself screwed.
I had previously only done business with friends and family, and made the mistake of not using it. I turned to my bank to help me when Venmo wouldn’t; the bank canceled the remainder of the transaction for me ($28) and I have since opened a Zelle account and suggested to friend and family that they switch to using a service that cares about customers more than a few bucks. Their customer service is all the same, from customer service representatives to managers. They all use the same placating but dismissive words while sticking to their philosophy of not supporting their customers. When I called them I was told they couldn't overturn it and they don't know why it was closed. They say it is from higher up. Leaving me with $145 in the account I have to for 6 months to make sure all transactions clear. If I can't use my account how am I going to have any transactions after a month or two. I also tried having a business account, that was a bad idea. They state you can have a business account and a regular account. I thought ok, no problem.
So I opened another personal account to go with the business account, because in order to get money from the business account, you need the personal account. I did this want my business connected to my personal account. I was under the impression that the personal account I created for the business was going to be linked and considered part of the business. Because I misunderstood they almost immediately closed my business account. I called and asked if they could close the personal account I made for the business and connect the personal one (I had for years) to it. Customer service said no because the accounts were closed. So I received a direct deposit of $1,047 into my Venmo account 3 days ago (which BTW is not early access to my money). In fact, despite showing an available balance of $1,047, venmo has denied me any and all access to my money citing "suspicious activity". Really venmo?!?! You got it twisted! What's suspicious is that your platforms is glitching every time I need to access my money. Like when I used my venmo issued debit card to pay for my child's daycare and it read "unauthorized payment". Strange, not to mention embarrassing.
So I figured, ok, I'll just transfer my funds to my bank issued debit card. However, in the process of linking my bank issued debit card, a pop up screen appeared which read "Something went wrong. Try again". So I did as it said, I tried again, and got the same screen so I gave it one more shot, with no success. So I employed my problem solving skills and came up with a super simple solution, a no brainer really, I'll use the app for the very thing it was intended for, Peer-to-Peer payment, I'll just venmo some money to my sister. Nope. This time an error code read "feature not available at this time. Try again later". So I tried again later, still not available.
I finally called customer service, got a live agent on the phone. She instructed me to try linking my bank card again so she can see which error code appears. So I did. And she saw. She instructed me to try a different card and I did. But still no luck. Then she instructed me to try linking my bank account using Plaid and when that didn't work she said to see what happens when I try to link my bank account manually, which did not work. Then she instructed me to log out and log back in the reset the system. I did. She said the system doesn't recognize my device so do it again later and then wait 30 mins then link my bank issued debit card, it should work and my peer-to-peer payments should too. So I do, however, it's after hours and now my error code is saying my account is restricted and only allows receiving and requesting money (which who in their right minds....) (anyway....).
So I figured ok I'll reset once more, 3 time's a charm. Nope, my account is now locked and frozen. So although my situation got worse after speaking to a venmo live agent I had no choice but to wait for 8a (an hour before I have to be at work) to speak to a supervisor this time so she can resolve whatever issue has now overtaken my entire account. She informs me that there was excessive activity on my account. Activity?!?! As in when I tried to use my own money, or when I tried to use the features venmo was designed for? Oh no, you must mean the prompts I received on your app instructing me to "Try again" or by your venmo trained live agent who instructed me to try it again and then again in 30 mins.
Now the supervisor is telling me the ONLY ones at venmo who can offer any real help do not take phone calls and I may not speak to them. They are the power that be who are able to help just not available to help. But check back in 5-10 business days, and hopefully venmo will have unlocked a solution for my account. How do I get to work venmo? I need a few bucks for bus fare. Can you Cash App me, perhaps?
I explained to the bus driver that venmo froze my account with $1,046 in it so I don't have my fare but I'm trying to get to work but he said that's not his problem and he's right. It's OUR problem venmo. Can you order me a Lyft or something. What is your policy for when you withhold all the money a person has? That just isn't true. Now some bills are late because I can't pay via Venmo.
Want to transfer your Bitcoin OUT of Venmo? Nope. They'll put a hold while they review your identity, and only escalate if you call them first. Otherwise, it just sits in limbo. Oh by the way, if you do want to transfer your crypto out of Venmo, they'll put limits on that and say you have reached your weekly limit...even if you've done NOTHING with your Venmo cash/crypto that week. By googling (first option before ever calling customer service) I found that Venmo can now allow scheduled payments- since October 2024. However I could not locate anything onscreen with Venmo that permitted this. I called support, went through the process twice including re-installing the app and nothing. I was then told before escalating that I would have to have the latest IOS. That version 18.2 allows apple AI to be installed. I explained that I did not want artificial intelligence on my device that would allow Apple to be even more intrusive and enable the spread of more disinformation.
Since this was a very recent upgrade, I asked if 18.2 was required to run Venmo now. Ms Kristine C refused to respond telling me that I would have to escalate the entire process first, providing useless information to get a simple answer. When I pointed out the simplicity of the inquiry she continued to talk over me and accuse me of "mocking" and "laughing at" the process. Hardly true because by then I was in tears. This company is very shady and fraudulent. I don't advise anyone to get involved doing business with them. First of all, customer service is a joke. They are determined to not let you speak with a live agent. I had a chat with someone about a person named Margaret using my email address fraudulently. I only found out because Venmo sent me an email address verification. I have never used Venmo or opened a credit/debit card through them, Thank God but evidently this Margaret person did and it's attached to her Wells Fargo acct. I assume she may be using it for business purposes or something. I am totally livid about this. I can't gain access to info to see exactly what she is using it for.
I got in a Chat with an agent. I let him know what my issue was, instead of him trying to help resolve my issues he sent me an application to open a venmo acct where in needed to pay to join. What??? Why on earth would I pay to join Venmo if I never have joined?? I am trying to resolve a fraudulent use of my email nothing else. He kept asking if I notice any charges on bank statement. I haven't but that's not the point. It's fraud period. Judging by these reviews, this company is very shady.

I lost my card. I called and reported it and then somebody got ahold of it and they used it. They did $75.10 in transactions and I disputed it. They sent me an email saying they refunded all my money back to my account the day I disputed. If they told me I could have my suspension lifted cuz I voluntarily allowed them to put it on there just to protect my account. Now they're making me do everything but give them a kidney, leg, arm, a viable blood. I don't know what they want from me but they will not unsuspend my account like I was told and they're not giving me my money. They're holding it hostage. So I've been robbed twice. One by whoever found my card then the second one by Venmo. They give you conflicting stories. You can never get a direct answer and now I have to reading these reviews I've come to realize that I'm not going to get my money but I guess that's their way of making their money. They steal from all the customers.

It has and still has taken over a week and a half just to retrieve a simple statement from my bank. Why do they need that anyway! I had to upload it for the 3rd time to them today. Honestly, I am taking all my cash off that card and never going back, ever, ever again. I want to add that I am a reasonable person, but when I cannot access my own money for this long, I start losing all reason. Here's tip for all of you future customers, go to Chime. I've been with them for 10 yrs now. Not one problem, No fees, ever! I never had my account frozen with Chime, and Venmo can't even give me a reason why they froze mine! If they don't post this, it will be on my FaceBook Acct. I have 5000 friends on there!

When I first got Venmo it was a good cash service app but now it is terrible. One, if you transfer money from Cash App you have to wait 30 minutes for the money to show up in your account. Two, transfers between you and your Venmo friend can get declined just because and when you go to make purchases the payment won't go through even though there is money in your account. Venmo is not recommended at all.

On 2-19 was issued a payment from a customer for $150 for a deposit on Venmo. The customer stated couple hours later they wanted the money back so we issued a refund and included transaction # for previous transaction. The customer issued a charge back on 3-19 thru Bank of America for the $150. So Venmo took out the $150 from my account on 4-4-24. I contacted the customer to see why the chargeback was issued and they said it was in error and would contact the bank to cancel dispute. I gave all evidence to Venmo and they sent a dispute to Bank of America.
I hadn't heard from Venmo and reached out several times to Venmo who claims the chargeback is still pending. I spoke with customer and Bank of America both who verified the chargeback was canceled on 4-3 and finalized on 4-30 and sent to Venmo. Venmo has yet to release the funds they took from me almost 40 days after the chargeback has been withdrawn. I issued a BBB complaint on Bank of America and Venmo which Bank of America called to confirm it has been canceled. Venmo has yet to respond to the BBB. I called Venmo several times and get a different reason why the money hasn't been returned or that there is another step to the process that has to be completed before they will give money back! Venmo customer service sucks!!

After I did this they again requested that the customer send another $150 and that I would refund it back to them and that after this was done, funds would be “Immediately” Deposited into my account. It was not! They came back to me and stated that I needed to refund my customer the original $725 and then they would deposit $1025 into my account.. (There are many posts about this so it must be common.) As a last resort I called their help number and listened to option 1-8 but I don’t fit any of those categories, so the unhelpful ‘help’ message suggests I go to their FAQs page. Full circle. What it tells me is that customer service is a joke, so no thank you, Venmo. One of which I was not. Oh but let me go back to 2 weeks prior to that. I had a friend of mine download the app and use Venmo for the first time. It's called a purchase protection plan and they can hold your money for up to 21 days.
Do not trust this company. They're fraudulent they're charging the buyer and the seller same amount of money. They're holding my money and charging me to do so. Incredible. Each time I received a reply steering me to general help topics! When you dial Venmo's phone number, it steers you to help topics and my experience was that after staying on the phone for several calls for about 10 minutes each and navigating to different prompts, NO LIVE PERSON EVER ANSWERED THE PHONE, AND THERE IS NO PROMPT TO SPEAK TO A LIVE REPRESENTATIVE.
Someone is using my email for a Venmo account, and now it seems I will have to use the New York State Division of Consumer Affairs to resolve this. It would have been a lot easier for Venmo to actually read my email request and personally respond that they were closing an account that was using my email without my authorization. I use this app for my business every week. It's one of the main ways I take payment from clients and I also send payments to vendors this way. It's just such a bummer that there is no easy way to resolve mistakes. I accidentally sent payment to a wrong person. This part is totally my fault. I did a stop payment with my bank. Now Venmo has ransomed my account, demanding pay. I can't get in touch with the stranger I sent the cash to, and venmo will not mediate. They are cold and unwilling. This transaction is costing me more than double what it should have (due to the bank also charging a stop payment fee). Venmo refuses to play ball.

I have both a personal and a business account and have had no problem receiving money for my business nor sending/receiving money with friends. Until now, I started doing some day trading peer to peer. Unfortunately, a couple of the people I traded with either are trying to scam me by sending money to my personal account but listing is as for a service, then disputing it, OR they used a third party without permission and those folks disputed the charges. I immediately told venmo to send ALL of the money back since I don't want to hurt anyone, I am fair and reasonable and I am certainly not a thief or dishonest.
They froze my account for review. Have not sent the money back, And 2 days later permanently deactivated my account, both personal (on which I was trading) as well as my business. Mind you I have several thousand dollars per month that have been coming through for my business alone for years with no problem. The worst part is, they won't let me send the money back and I cannot reach a real live person to get help. So, RUN AWAY! Customer service is mostly auto generated! Sometimes there is an agent involved, and if you reply to your response, you get cut and paste reply.
