In 2023, legal services provider Rocket Lawyer launched a tax preparation service for individuals and businesses. Rocket Tax does not offer do-it-yourself tax services; instead, it pairs you with a tax expert who will complete the process for you. There are only three tax tiers to choose from, making it easy to know which tax service is right for you.

What is Rocket Tax?
Available for both individual returns and business tax support, Rocket Tax pairs clients with a local, U.S.-based certified public accountant (CPA) or an enrolled agent (EA) with a minimum of five years’ experience. If for any reason you are not happy with your tax expert, Rocket Tax says it will assign a new person to your case, no questions asked.
What sets Rocket Tax apart from its competitors is that all members will get a lawyer’s assistance with their filing. As a member, you have the option to ask a lawyer a question or have them review your documents. Also included is a 30-minute phone consultation if a new issue occurs.
How does Rocket Tax work?
With Rocket Tax, once you sign up, you will be matched with a tax professional. From there, you can use your phone to take pictures of all of your tax documents and send them to your tax preparer. You will also be able to discuss any issues or ask questions with your preparer through the Rocket Tax app.
Once the tax professional completes your taxes, you will be able to review the documents and sign through RocketSign, a free online service that allows you to electronically sign documents.
Rocket Tax services
Rocket Tax offers three levels of tax preparation services.
- Personal: For individuals or couples filing jointly. A CPA or EA will prepare your taxes in order to get the maximum refund.
- Self-employed: For freelancers, contractors, sole proprietors and single-member LLCs. It comes with a business activity review, and year-end bookkeeping is available.
- Business: For C-corporations, S-corporations, partnerships, trusts/estates and nonprofits. This level also includes advice on how to maximize business tax benefits and has year-end bookkeeping available.
How much does Rocket Tax cost?
Members of Rocket Lawyer receive 50% OFF tax preparation pricing. This discount is available even if you have Rocket Lawyer as a benefit through your employer.

- Personal: Starts at $199.99 with membership; $399.99 without
- Self-employed: Starts at $399.99 with membership; $799.99 without
- Business: Starts at $499.99 with membership; $999.99 without

Rocket Tax FAQ
How will I receive my tax refund with Rocket Tax?
Rocket Tax recommends receiving your refund through direct deposit for a quicker payout. However, the IRS will also mail you a check if you request that option. Rocket Tax does not offer advanced refunds.
How long will it take Rocket Tax to file your taxes?
On average, filing takes seven days to complete. However, for an extra fee, expedited tax preparation is available and can be completed in as little as one day. This fast service is only available at certain times before the tax deadline.
How can I file an extension with Rocket Tax?
Free extensions are available to all clients, and your tax professional can request one on your behalf. Remember that you can delay submitting your taxes until October, but if you owe money, that payment is still due and cannot be delayed.
Can I file for multiple years or states?
Yes. You will be matched with a tax professional who knows how to file back taxes, file in multiple states or amend your return.
Is Rocket Tax legit?
Although Rocket Tax is a new tax preparation service started in 2023, its parent company, Rocket Lawyer has been in business since 2008. Over 490 ConsumerAffairs reviewers have given Rocket Lawyer a 5-star rating during the past year as of publishing.

I signed up for Personal Premier taxes in early February 2024 through Rocket Lawyer, and called customer service numerous times beforehand to make sure it was the right fit. I thought it was, until I logged into the platform and realized I'd made a huge mistake. If you're looking for an accountant to do your taxes via chat instant message service, Rocket Tax is the service for you. They do not offer phone calls. By "chat with a pro" they mean "communicate via instant message/chat box with a pro."
The professional I was originally matched with had extremely poor English grammar, which was very noticeable over text. After she refused to speak on the phone with me, I called corporate and asked for a refund. First, I was told that I had been advised previously that phone calls were not part of the service (a lie) and the representative claimed that she would email a transcript of this conversation (she did not). The second time I called, I was told that "Rocket Tax doesn't have your money, the tax professional has your money," So I had to request a refund via chat box directly from the EA (by now I had been dropped by the first and matched with a second) assigned to my taxes, who luckily decided to return my money. I've previously used Turbo Tax Live and also a personal accountant, both with great success. Do not recommend this service at all.

If you want to enter your data about 5 times. Seems you have to answer all these questions to purchase the product then before you start filing you have to answer the same questions. Seems you would be better off going someplace else. Then try to get customer service. What a joke. I purchased the product and received an email stating they would match me with somebody and I would get a email by said date. Date comes and goes. No email. I tried reaching somebody from the chat said they would email or call me in a day nothing. After hours of trying finally got somebody and they have an error/bug in their system. Not sure I want them to handle my taxes now as how many more bugs do they have.
