Took 3 calls to Hampton NH branch. Needed to speak with Kimberly & she was very abrupt; speaking with coworkers & coworkers speaking her as I was speaking. I asked if I should call back 'cause I really need help with the situation. She says, "No we'll always be busy so just tell what you need;" Rushed me; told me could not help me. Never finished explaining the situation that we needed to help resolve. So once, again no good customer service @ Hampton NH Branch; still cannot receive help.

Warning: Avoid M&T Bank for Mortgages – Worst Experience Ever. I’ve had the worst banking experience of my life with M&T Bank – especially with their mortgage department. I was going through a mortgage recast while pregnant, and the process has been nothing short of a nightmare. I made 13 phone calls over the course of a month just to get clarity on the process and ensure everything was done correctly. I completed the recast on July 31st, 2025, and the banker told me the administrative department would call within 3 business days. Guess what? No one ever called. Since then, I’ve been calling every single day, and each time I get different answers. At times, I’ve even felt like I’m dealing with a scam.
On top of that, I requested PMI removal, as I’ve paid well over 25% of my mortgage, meeting the requirement. It’s now been more than 20 business days with no answer, despite this being a clear legal requirement when conditions are met. This experience has been overwhelming, stressful, and exhausting. If your lender is selling your mortgage to M&T Bank, I highly recommend looking for another bank. This company has no respect for their customers’ time, energy, or well-being.

The employees and supervisors at this bank will lie to you, and if you pay off a loan at this bank, it might take you as long as 51 days to get your title! Think twice before you give them your business. I was lied to by the woman who took my payment to pay off the truck on July 9th. She said the title would arrive in 10 to 14 days. It didn't arrive.
I called and talked to a supervisor after 14 days, and they said they held the payment until July 23rd and then mailed me a lien release and the title. I finally got it on July 31st. Just the letter. Not the title. Went to the DMV and found out that they could have mailed the title, but now it will take another 21 business days for the state to send it to me. So if it comes ON TIME, it will be August 29th. That will be 51 days to get a title on a paid-off truck. That is inexcusable. Two employees lied to me. A third person I talked to today filed a complaint for me. But so did the supervisor, and I didn't get a call back.

Worst banking experience I have ever had. My family is starting a new business and received a $100,000 grant from our local City government as part of Project Restore, for the purpose of renovating our space and purchasing all equipment necessary for start up. We opened an account at M&T to receive the grant funds and get things going. Unfortunately, from DAY ONE it was nothing but hassles and frustrations. I have felt like M&T has been holding our grant funds hostage because every transaction we attempt is denied or flagged as a fraud alert.
This has led to my daughter and I being on the phone with their debit card management department DAILY over the course of a week and I am DONE. I normally bank with Bank of America and apparently I'm spoiled because their customer service, online platform and features, and SENSIBLE SECURITY MEASURES make M&T look like amateurs. I created new accounts for our business at BoA and will be pulling all funds from M&T immediately.

I have a Anto/RV loan from M&T Bank. I received monthly statements and pay by check, until I made an online payment. After that all correspondence stopped and I no longer received a statement by mail. I went online to check it out and found that I was late on a payment that I hadn't received a statement for. I paid the payment and the next payment plus the late fee and requested the late fee be reimbursed I was given a payment confirmation number.. A representative took my information and the next day my main bank showed the withdraw. I checked M&T Bank 2 days later and found they had reversed the payment.
I called a representative. They verified my information and the other banks information was correct. I was put on hold for about 40 minutes. When the rep returned he didn't know why the payment was reversed, who actually did it and how to correct the situation. I was also told the confirmation number meant nothing. They had NOT returned my money to my bank but they did show that I still owed the the payment. I asked when the reversal would hit my bank and they said it should be some time soon. Again, these people show incompetence and disregard for their customers!

Never had a bank rep scream at top of his voice to me over the phone until today. I called M&T bank to make a car payment over the phone since my last bill pay check was not cashed AGAIN ON TIME. YEP, at this point I set up reminders to double check this payment EVERY MONTH because they are incompetent. I was not in the mood to indulge customer service rep "Scott" in his mansplaining on how to use my bill account and his condescending attitude for an additional 10 minutes and screaming at the top of his voice not to interrupt him when I asked to speak to a manager - but of course he transferred me to another agent not the manager. I'll be paying this off with another loan from a different bank. Never again will I do business with M&T.

This bank has been a nightmare for selling our home. The buyers of our home wanted to assume our VA loan, and we were quoted 90 days to close. Then they delayed it. Then, 2 days before closing, they informed us they weren't ready to close. They are basically holding our equity hostage and creating a nightmare for us and our buyers. I feel so trapped and helpless and will be pursuing recourse options. Absolutely the worst.

While on a family trip to Puerto Rico, one of our excursions was unexpectedly canceled at the location. I was handed a receipt for the refund and informed that my bank—M&T Bank—was responsible for releasing the funds back to my account. I urgently needed to book another excursion so my children wouldn’t be heartbroken, but the money was still being held by M&T. In the past, M&T had assisted me with releasing pending funds in emergencies, so I reached out to customer service with the hope they would do the same. Instead, I was met with resistance, indifference, and a lack of urgency. I was transferred multiple times and kept waiting, only to finally be connected with a supervisor (ID: **) who was cold, dismissive, and made it clear that my situation didn’t matter. This call happened on June 24th at 10 AM, a moment that left me feeling stranded, unsupported, and emotionally drained.
I don’t understand how it's so easy for banks to take your money with the click of a button, but when it comes to releasing your own money—especially during an emergency—they make it nearly impossible. Being away from home, with kids looking to me for guidance and reassurance, I expected compassion and care from my bank. I received neither. M&T Bank made an already stressful travel situation even more traumatic by withholding my own funds and offering no empathy. I will be switching to Fulton Bank, where I’ve heard they actually value their customers. M&T, do better. Your customers are human beings, not just account numbers.

I have been with M&T for 12 years. Over time, this bank has gone way downhill. The most minor thing is the chips on the debit cards die in less than 2 years and you have to regularly order a new one. Now for the meat of the matter. Imagine being assessed a $75 late fee because their ridiculous Zelle limits caused you to have to pay late. (I am submitting a bill to M&T for this $75 because it is them, not me that caused this late payment.) Imagine calling them and being on hold for hours, then the customer service reps talk over you, then tell you there's nothing that can be done. I have no other way to pay my rent. I can't even get money orders because the chip on my card is dead and I'm still waiting for the new one to arrive. After 12 years, I am leaving this bank and never looking back. Absolutely atrocious now.

Just awful - in so many ways. With M&T offering a promo incentive of $350 for opening a new personal checking account, I thought I'd change my bank - BIG MISTAKE! The account was easy to open but afterwards, I found out the incentive was only $100 (IS THAT LEGAL?) and, since then, I've spent hours (honestly) waiting and getting bounced around with their "customer service" to enable an initial deposit to fund this account. I finally told them enough-is-enough and that I no longer wanted the new account and requested to check forget it. To add insult-in-injury, I was told there would be an fee for closing the account (AGAIN, IS THIS LEGAL??). STILL WAIITING FOR M&T CUSTOMER SERVICE... going on 4+ hours now.

The worst bank ever. I had a 75 month installment loan for my car. I made 67 out of 75 payments on time. I was late 8 times due my my divorce. Even though I made all payments and received my title, these guys are reporting my loan as a charge off. It is impacting my credit score by 100 points. I think they do it for tax purposes. How is it possible that I paid off the loan and they charge it off. It's very unfortunate.

I'm not married and never have been. Made sure all my paperwork said single. They sent me the wrong paperwork multiple times to the point my notary was confused and refused to sign because of the verbiage on documents stating that I was married to my dad... and there's more but yea shitty company.

If I could give no stars I would. I started a mortgage process through M & T a few weeks ago and it has been nothing short of a nightmare. Two months after being pre approved for a mortgage I found a house and soon was under contract. That's when the nightmare began. Two week after going into contract on the house M & T decides to pull the approval. Nothing has changed on my part. I had not made a large purchase or had any negative changes in my credit score in that two month time.
I received a text late in the afternoon on a Wednesday from the loan officer stating I would need to get a co-signer or find a new lender. I immediately (it took me 5 minutes) found a co-signer. He sent his information in right away. After which I was told he may not work because he's had alimony payments. So I found a new lender that might. By morning I had told the M&T loan officer I was working with another lender. He said he was still fighting to keep the loan alive but that it was smart to get the process going with a new bank. This was Thursday. The new lender felt my co-signer was strong and made moving forward easy. By Friday midday the M&T loan officer informs me my loan is back on and starts asking my co-signer for more documents etc.
My co-signer was heading out of town for Waster weekend so I said let's put a pin in things til after the holiday. The bee lender had gotten back time Friday night with a better rate abs cheaper closing costs. So I took the weekend and decided I would inform M&T Tuesday that I was going in another direction. Monday night around 10:00pm I see my credit card has been charged 866.00 for an appraisal by M&T bank.
The next morning my realtor informs me that they had conducted that appraisal the week before. After they canceled my loan. I called and asked them why they did that. I got no real answer other than I should have told them I was using another bank that week. I asked for a refund and so far gotten the runaround. M&T bank has made this house buying process one of the most horrible things I've ever gone through. It has taken a toll on my physical and mental health. Please do not use M&T for a mortgage. The worst experience I have ever had with a bank.

My original mortgage company sold my mortgage to M&T. They are absolutely terrible. They keep transferring you to other departments that only tell you that it’s some other departments' problem. I am a disabled combat veteran in Texas where my property taxes are exempt. It’s been a year now and my escrow account still isn’t reflecting that exemption. I was told to wait until the 2024 taxes came out for the change. Now they said I have to wait for the 2025 taxes to come out before they can adjust it.
This is the first company that I have had that treats their veterans like this. They do the bare minimum and even though my county tax office has sent the form saying I am tax exempt as well as the tax office telling them this over the phone they still refuse to adjust my escrow. It’s very disappointing that mortgage companies such as this one care so little about their veterans. I would suggest staying away from them at any cost especially if you are a vet.

Our home loan was sold to M&T bank in July, the auto pay required that we speak to an agent, it wasn't Enrolled. Payments due on the 1st were not auto paid. There was no digital notice from the bank, just a credit downgrade from our Credit Union. In fact, mortgages don't have the ability to add alerts. I don't have any emails from them since Sept 2 when I reset my password and setup auto pay with them.
There is now a $109 late fee, 2 missed payments and credit report went down 139 points (821 -> 682). They have no recourse for the reporting or appeal process per MBT policy. I have contacted 2 other banks locally that don't resell loans. They also told me that the bank can reverse the credit reports, so work with them first. I tried on a phone call this morning, but no options for service recovery with MBT. I will pay off this mortgage by the 12/24 to get away from such a bank if I have to.

I live and work on the east end of Long Island I have dealt with this bank that has changed names over the years for at least 40 years. Now is M&T Bank by far the worst ever. Recently all the women that worked at the bank have been transferred somewhere else and there is only males working now in my bank East Hampton New York. I'm a guy and it's not about whether a male or female is working. I am just making comment that the entire staff is gone and new people are there now. None of the men know me so I have to show my ID each and every time. None of them seem to really know how to work the machines or deal with customers what used to take 30 seconds to get my withdraw or deposit trans taken now takes like 10 minutes at least. They seem totally untrained and don't have a clue what they're doing the machines all seem to be broken or they just don't know how to use them. Absolute worst bank I've ever dealt with. Thinking about for the first time in 40 years changing locations and finding a real bank.

9/26 I opened my account, and nothing looks wrong. There was no hint I needed further action or documents. 9/29 I received a DocuSign email, filled it and scanned my ID online. 10/2 I still cannot fund the account, all my deposits have been reversed. M&T csr says "it's still under review that's why it's frozen. You can wait until Thursday to call back." 10/4 My two savings accounts that I used to fund the M&T account both got reversed and frozen (that I have to call each to resolve it).
I called M&T again asking if I could close the account and delete everything I had with them. Their rep told me I cannot do anything unless I go to a branch. The closest branch is 30min away and only open 9 to 4. 10/7 Called 3rd time. After 3 phone holds and transfers to 'another department', they told me the account ban has been lifted on 10/5 but I have to "call another fraud department to lift the online client ban". Don’t even consider M&T bank. You absolutely CANNOT trust them with your money! I attempted to send a Zelle payment (an app that M&T gave me with my account. It’s connected right to my account so it wasn’t anything I had to download. They blocked the payment then put a fraud hold on my account. This was 4 days ago now. I called the day they placed the hold and was 1st told that I had “a legal hold”. I am a paralegal and the true meaning of a legal hold would be a freeze of the account by a creditor you owe money to. I knew that wasn’t possible as they would have to have a judgment and I don’t even have any accounts in collections. They refused to tell me who the hold was from or give me any further info. I had just received my tax refund of 6k 2 days prior to this so I had a literal panic attack. I was blocked from my online banking and branches were closed.
I called again after I noticed an email from the fraud department regarding my Zelle. A fraud hold made much more sense to me. The 2nd agent I spoke with confirmed it was in fact a fraud hold not a legal hold. I confirmed the transaction was me. I was told they can’t remove the block as they have to come their “investigation”. I’ve been told the same absurd story for the past 4 days. What investigation?!! They denied my Zelle, I called and verified there is no fraud, any other bank end of story. Not M&T! 4 days, no access to my funds, I advised my daughter needs her asthma medication and I need the hold off and they refused. My car insurance has been canceled as I couldn’t pay it due to this, they have not reached out to me one time and they let this go into and all through the weekend so I couldn’t go to a branch. To say I’m irate at this point would be severely understated.
I am finally going today to speak to the branch manager and I will absolutely not leave without every cent of my money and my account closed. This to me is harassment. It has caused extreme anxiety, stress and financial hardship. All for using an app they gave me. Verifying it was me should have been all they needed to release the hold. I’ve received no answers or details from anyone. Worst bank in existence!

My mortgage got transferred to M&T Bank about a month after I closed. As soon as I was informed of the change, I set up my account and registered for autopay so that I wouldn’t have to worry about missing any payments. Fast forward 2 months later - I find out that because I set up my autopay “too close” to when the payment was due, it never registered properly. I set up the autopay on 5/28 and set the payment date to 6/1!!!! I was never notified by email that the payment didn’t go through, and because the first payment didn’t go through, neither did the 2 that followed. I only found out when I got a call from the bank.
Luckily because the system clearly showed that I HAD set up the auto pay 3 days before my payment was due, they waived the late fees… But I’m still absolutely pissed off because I’m sure my credit score is now in the trash because of this fiasco. I don’t know what’s happened with MT Bank since I have not had nothing but a calamity of errors since they took over People's. When they took over People's, they did not give us access to our checking records on-line. I needed them to do my taxes and they accommodated me by sending a thick wad of papers with every transaction on it. Nearly impossible to navigate. Immediately afterwards, system-wide, they bounced a bunch of checks and sent out an apology letter to everyone. Subsequently they sent two mortgage payments out of my online checking account. They claimed I had two accounts, but that had never happened before. Regardless, I called them, they told me it was rectified, and then the next month sent out two mortgage checks again. It takes months to get a refund from a servicer.
I just sold my home and paid off their HELOC. They wrote to me telling me they never received a document I had to sign to terminate the HELOC (even though they canceled it online and got all their money back) they claim my attorney never sent them the documents… Which they subsequently found out was incorrect. They just had misplaced them. Two weeks ago, I asked the bank to remove a vendor from my automatic payments, which they assured me they did and followed up with the letter in writing. Two days ago that payment showed up on my statement as being paid to the vendor. If the bank can make this many errors with my single account… I can only imagine what’s going on systemwide. Somebody really needs to look into this before a major catastrophe occurs.

One that was already paid off two years prior.
So I call again and eventually get to another supervisor and we agreed they would FedEx it out and I would have it in a day or so. It's now almost a week later and still nothing. I called again and made my way up the chain of supervisors only to be asked for my FedEx account number. That's unacceptable, I asked for her supervisor and was bounced to another person. And if giving that much personal information is not enough to verify you then as someone that knows IT security, I should be concerned. Not knowing the exact penny of a payment but knowing dates, address, ss#, emails and phone numbers... if far more verifying than an exact penny amount. I will be looking for a new loan institution as soon as possible. Dealing with this customer service is not recommended nor advised and should really be addressed.

Awful customer service over the phone, I was asked 20 different questions just to replace my card, the associate went as far as asking me my legal status? I think there was reason why they have such a bad score.

I was a People’s, then People’s united Bank customer for over 20 years prior to the sale to M&T. I am writing to warn you to not fall for the TV and radio hype barrage that M&T has launched to save its reputation. They are by far, without exception, the WORST BANK I have ever dealt with in my 50 years of doing banking. My wife closed her accounts last year, I closed 3 of the 5 I had, hoping it would get better plus I had developed a warm relationship with the tellers that I didn't want to walk away from. Unfortunately, after 1 problem followed by another, then another, the time has come to end my relationship with MnT. There have been SO MANY problems that I don't care to waste any more of my time explaining them.
Basically everyone I know from family, friends and colleagues who had an M&T account has left. Do yourself a favor and heed the reviews and warnings from the people on these sites. It will save you unimaginable aggravation, time and grief that is inevitable if you continue with this bank. I'll be closing my last accounts this week.
