This has been a very frustrating bank to work with. I took out a loan last month through them when purchasing my trailer, and the experience has been disappointing. Right from the start, I was surprised to see around $200 in charges within just the first couple of weeks—before I had even made my first scheduled payment. That wasn’t clearly explained upfront.
Customer service has also been difficult. Calls take much longer than expected, with repeated verification questions compared to other banks I’ve dealt with. More importantly, I’ve received inconsistent information from representatives. For example, I recently made a payment and called within about 10 minutes to ask that it be applied to the principal. I was told you can't do it because it was “too late,” even though the payment hadn’t fully processed yet. Then I was advised that next time I should specify that the payment is for principal only when submitting it.
However, when I followed up today, I was given a completely different process—told to go online, print a special form, and mail it in with a check. This contradicts what I was previously told and makes a simple request unnecessarily complicated. Additionally, being on the West Coast makes things harder, since there are no local branches or partner locations where I can handle payments in person. Overall, the lack of clarity, inconsistent guidance, and limited accessibility make this bank very difficult to work with. I would not recommend it to anyone, especially for customers who value straightforward processes, reliable customer support and their time.

This bank is an embarrassment. I had a fraudulent charge on my credit card at a Walmart in Mexico for $690.93. I was told to cancel my card, which I did, and my account would be credited in 2 hrs. That didn’t happen. Called back after being on hold for over 20 min. & told it would be credited that evening. That didn’t happen. Called the following day on hold for over 30 min. & told it would be 10 days after an investigation. I told them it was unacceptable & would like to speak to the supervisor & asked for the name of the head of the fraud dept. Then was hung up on.
Called Walmart fraud dept. several times to try & find out what items were purchased to see if they were placed for sale on social media & whether M & T Bank contacted them & they, expectedly, would not release any information. Called the bank once again to find out the status of my “alleged” dispute, once again, to no avail. Please do your diligence when choosing a bank. M & T Bank should not be on your list.

Brighton Monroe ave branch. The notary public failed to appropriately notarize my documents. I called the bank management who offered no support and an arrogant tone. My valid concerns were not addressed.

I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding my recent experience working with Tran **, Commercial Lending Manager at M&T Bank, in connection with a commercial loan request. As someone who has been in the lending industry for many years, I have extensive experience with loan processes, underwriting requirements, and the level of professionalism and communication that should be expected throughout a transaction. Unfortunately, my experience working with Mr. ** fell significantly below those professional standards.
From the outset of the transaction, I was assured by Mr. ** that the loan would be relatively straightforward given the financial strength, leverage, and supporting documentation I provided. However, as the process progressed, it became clear that the file had not been properly reviewed or prepared. The handling of the documentation and overall management of the loan process appeared disorganized and lacked the level of diligence one would expect from a commercial lending manager.
Communication throughout the process was also extremely concerning. I frequently had to follow up multiple times simply to receive basic updates on the status of the file. On several occasions, I was forced to contact other departments within M&T Bank just to attempt to reach Mr. ** or obtain information regarding the progress of my loan. This type of communication breakdown is highly unprofessional and created unnecessary delays and frustration. Equally troubling was the apparent lack of proper document review early in the process. Items that should have been identified and addressed during the initial stages were instead brought up much later, resulting in inefficiencies and avoidable complications. This reflects a lack of preparation and oversight that should not occur in a professionally managed commercial lending transaction.
Based on my experience, the handling of this loan did not meet the level of service, organization, or professionalism expected from a financial institution such as M&T Bank. As a lending professional myself, I found the overall experience extremely disappointing. Given the manner in which this transaction was handled, I would not recommend working with Mr. Ousa or pursuing commercial lending through M&T Bank based on my experience. I strongly encourage prospective borrowers to carefully evaluate their options before engaging in a lending relationship under similar circumstances. I hope this feedback is taken seriously and used internally to review the handling of this matter and improve the level of service provided to future clients. Sincerely, Scott

A class action lawsuit should be filed against this company. M&T Bank computer is failing in math, and their customer service has failed as well. I contacted M&T Bank because I overpaid in escrow, and they want to overcharge me when I am not in default. I brought this to the M&T representative Sierra's attention, asked to be transferred to a specialist, but she said there is nothing they can do and hung up on me.

I took a loan out. 1st payment due on 1st payment they took all to interest and 2nd payment too. Thru my payments that I paid weekly after all over the place. I never had a car payment house payment do this. I keep getting the run around so I filed a complaint. They are screwing me. I would not go to them. The bank and camping world are scammers and out for themselves. They know once you sign your unable to do anything. 6/28/2025. Buy a camper. First payment 8/12/2025. 414. Your 1st payment of 414 and 2nd of 104. Is taken to interest. Nothing stating before 8/12/2025. You will be charged interest. Nothing. Scammed. 5 months after weekly payments of 104. 2 dollars went to principal. Rest to interest. Really. Probably cause of 1st 2 payments. What gives. Waiting to be investigated.

Shannon ** promise that at my 10 year loan would roll over but instead I get a demand letter. Needless to say I have three loans with them and never late, so Shannon commented, "We are looking out in best interest for the bank so screw your good customers!!!!"

Been a customer 5+ years. They have my car loan, otherwise I'd close account. Staff are rude, dismissive, none performing. Lousy at serving customer inquiries.. etc. Thy seem to have implemented a business model based upon "for every customer we lose, we get 5 new ones so why bother with customer services" Their CEO seems to see customers as a necessary evil rather than commodity that provides a continuing revenue stream.

I have been a customer of M&T Bank since 2011, when it acquired Wilmington Trust. For the most part, I was generally satisfied with the bank and the service I received. Recently, I was sent a threatening letter, saying that if I did not call and verify my information that they would first freeze and then close my account. I understand KYC requirements, but sending this type of threatening letter as a first notice is ridiculous. I called the number provided, verified my information with the representative I spoke with, and was assured that the issue was resolved. A month later, without any notice or explanation, the bank freezes my account and starts sending notices to creditors that payments will not be processed. This is not only embarrassing to me, but casts me in a negative light with my creditors.
The first notice of this action was another letter. Nothing on the online website that I use regularly. No text alerts that I have signed up for. Just a letter saying they were returning a check I wrote. I called and spent an hour and twenty minutes trying to address the problem across multiple departments. They acknowledged that they were in the wrong and that I was told that I had correctly verified my information, yet still froze my account without warning. When I asked to speak with the supervisor of the department that handled this roughshod treatment of customers, the best they would do is give me an address for their customer advocacy department. No one deserves to be treated like this, especially a long-standing customer. I will be banking elsewhere from now on.

I have been a loyal customer of this bank for years, and I am extremely disappointed with how they handled a recent situation. My son was unfortunately scammed into depositing a fraudulent check, and as soon as I found out, I immediately contacted the bank to report it. I acted in good faith, explained what happened, and asked for guidance. Instead of supporting me as a long-time customer who was trying to do the right thing, the bank chose to close all of my accounts. This was very upsetting because I was the one who reported the fraud and sought help. I expected understanding and protection, not punishment for being honest. I hope the bank reevaluates how they treat loyal customers who come forward with concerns. This experience left me feeling unsupported at a time when I needed assistance the most.

I recently was hacked. Thiefs got my M&T debit card online and charged 200.00 on it for an egift card. M&T supposedly investigated but determined this purchase was not fraudulent & reversed my "provisional credit" of $200.00. $200.00 may not sound like a lot but it's hard to lose especially around the holidays. But, I feel the worse is that they made me feel like I'm the thief! My son who works in cyber security was able to determine that these people were from overseas that got into my PC and he had to wipe my comp. M&t bank did not have my back, some investigation!! (I have been hacked before with credit cards & the credit card co. has always had my back.) I am looking for another bank, have been a loyal customer for many years, first time my M&T debit card has been compromised & this is what this bank did for me!!

Obtained a $15k HELOC through M&T and the whole process was at a snail's pace because of the complete lack of communication between their departments. Then after I finally get the loan and it's deposited in my TD account I find out that I am unable to set up online payments because I don't have a M&T bank checking account. That makes ZERO sense as I can in fact use my TD checking to pay my M&T MORTGAGE. Yes, you read that correct. Don't use M&T.

I am in the middle of buying a house in Little Falls NY & M&T Bank received my certified check for over half a million Dollars. They Froze the check and said it was a fraud check. I sent them all documents to prove it's real, my local bank manager called them to verify it's valid and informed M&T bank and sent image of check that they cashed it and shows M&T bank has those funds and my bank paid it out. M&T bank is committing fraud and still will not release the funds. Samantha at that bank is not willing to help in any way. Beware to those who decide to bank there. I am still trying to resolve this with my Attorneys.

Worse customer service ever. Quote a rate for a long and it changes from 7.5 on phone to 7.75% when going to sign forms then add 150 document fee. The cost to print loan agreement. Change interest to over 9% was told it was a way for bank to make more money. Asked to speak to vice president. Was told they would call. Got loan on Sofi in less than a day. Talked to Dennis president. He really didn't care. Believed his loan officers who changed their story.. I didn't need anything other than not having other disabled vets like me hit with bait and switch interest rates.

🚨 M&T Bank — People need to hear this. 🚨 I’ve always had clean payment history, and I’ve always paid on time. Then during M&T Bank’s transition, my January payment was lost on THEIR end — not mine. Instead of correcting their mistake, they marked me 30 days late. At the same time, we had a serious emergency at home: A bathroom leak that caused mold, and with small children, this became a health risk. I reached out under hardship, explained everything, and asked for help.
• They ignored my clean payment history.
• Hit me with a 30-day late caused by THEIR transition.
• Offered almost no support while I was dealing with mold, repairs, and trying to keep my kids safe.
Banks claim to care about families and communities — but when you’re actually in a crisis, they push you aside. I will be filing a complaint with the CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) because this is unfair, harmful, and not how a bank should treat customers who have done everything right. If you bank with M&T, be aware of how they handle emergencies and their own errors. M&T Bank, fix this. Families deserve better. @CFPB

We were in a FEMA forbearance plan as a result of hurricanes Helene and Milton. M&T Bank purchase our mortgage during that time and forced us into a loan restructuring that has ruined our credit, despite the fact that we only sought assistance for 2 payments during the forbearance period. Their practices are deceptive and their single point of contact team fails to provide consistent or knowledgeable service. We will be glad to be rid of this bank that we never chose.

Horrible customer service, and business practices, I purchased a vehicle for my company and this is who the dealership arranged the financing through. Initially no issues but by the time the 4th payment was due I did not receive the bill until September 30 for the October 1st payment, even after calling in the middle of September requesting it. The check was written and sent out on September 30th. On October 14, I receive a text stating that my payment was late and to call the 800 number. Once I was finally able to speak with someone it did not get any better she was completely unconcerned and when I explained the situation all she would say is we've been haven't trouble wit the mail and the due date is the due date.

I had a phone call regarding my escrow shortage in August before I left for a trip to London. When I came home I found out that the mortgage payment that I paid was not applied to my mortgage because I was still short. I was very frustrated so I called a second time and I got somebody who helped me and told me just pay this amount and then the amount that you wanted to pay for your monthly premium will be what you ask for. Just today I got another notice saying that my mortgage account has not been applied to my account and now I'm late because I was short I'm at payment. I am beyond frustrated. The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing in this company. I cannot wait to be done with this mortgage and I will never do business with this bank again. It is simply awful.

Customer service is horrible at this bank. They bought out my mortgage from my original bank and they have raise and raise my rates monthly. I was paying &1700 originally and as soon as they bought out my original bank I started paying $2200. If I need any type of assistance their customer service team is quickly to be defensive. Instead of listening to what I’m asking they talk to me like I’m an idiot. No care of helping a homeowner. Only care about their money. I never agreed to have them as a bank but for some reason I had no say in this. Look at all these bad reviews. You would think they would do something about it.

Took 3 calls to Hampton NH branch. Needed to speak with Kimberly & she was very abrupt; speaking with coworkers & coworkers speaking her as I was speaking. I asked if I should call back 'cause I really need help with the situation. She says, "No we'll always be busy so just tell what you need;" Rushed me; told me could not help me. Never finished explaining the situation that we needed to help resolve. So once, again no good customer service @ Hampton NH Branch; still cannot receive help.

Warning: Avoid M&T Bank for Mortgages – Worst Experience Ever. I’ve had the worst banking experience of my life with M&T Bank – especially with their mortgage department. I was going through a mortgage recast while pregnant, and the process has been nothing short of a nightmare. I made 13 phone calls over the course of a month just to get clarity on the process and ensure everything was done correctly. I completed the recast on July 31st, 2025, and the banker told me the administrative department would call within 3 business days. Guess what? No one ever called. Since then, I’ve been calling every single day, and each time I get different answers. At times, I’ve even felt like I’m dealing with a scam.
On top of that, I requested PMI removal, as I’ve paid well over 25% of my mortgage, meeting the requirement. It’s now been more than 20 business days with no answer, despite this being a clear legal requirement when conditions are met. This experience has been overwhelming, stressful, and exhausting. If your lender is selling your mortgage to M&T Bank, I highly recommend looking for another bank. This company has no respect for their customers’ time, energy, or well-being.

The employees and supervisors at this bank will lie to you, and if you pay off a loan at this bank, it might take you as long as 51 days to get your title! Think twice before you give them your business. I was lied to by the woman who took my payment to pay off the truck on July 9th. She said the title would arrive in 10 to 14 days. It didn't arrive.
I called and talked to a supervisor after 14 days, and they said they held the payment until July 23rd and then mailed me a lien release and the title. I finally got it on July 31st. Just the letter. Not the title. Went to the DMV and found out that they could have mailed the title, but now it will take another 21 business days for the state to send it to me. So if it comes ON TIME, it will be August 29th. That will be 51 days to get a title on a paid-off truck. That is inexcusable. Two employees lied to me. A third person I talked to today filed a complaint for me. But so did the supervisor, and I didn't get a call back.

Worst banking experience I have ever had. My family is starting a new business and received a $100,000 grant from our local City government as part of Project Restore, for the purpose of renovating our space and purchasing all equipment necessary for start up. We opened an account at M&T to receive the grant funds and get things going. Unfortunately, from DAY ONE it was nothing but hassles and frustrations. I have felt like M&T has been holding our grant funds hostage because every transaction we attempt is denied or flagged as a fraud alert.
This has led to my daughter and I being on the phone with their debit card management department DAILY over the course of a week and I am DONE. I normally bank with Bank of America and apparently I'm spoiled because their customer service, online platform and features, and SENSIBLE SECURITY MEASURES make M&T look like amateurs. I created new accounts for our business at BoA and will be pulling all funds from M&T immediately.

I have a Anto/RV loan from M&T Bank. I received monthly statements and pay by check, until I made an online payment. After that all correspondence stopped and I no longer received a statement by mail. I went online to check it out and found that I was late on a payment that I hadn't received a statement for. I paid the payment and the next payment plus the late fee and requested the late fee be reimbursed I was given a payment confirmation number.. A representative took my information and the next day my main bank showed the withdraw. I checked M&T Bank 2 days later and found they had reversed the payment.
I called a representative. They verified my information and the other banks information was correct. I was put on hold for about 40 minutes. When the rep returned he didn't know why the payment was reversed, who actually did it and how to correct the situation. I was also told the confirmation number meant nothing. They had NOT returned my money to my bank but they did show that I still owed the the payment. I asked when the reversal would hit my bank and they said it should be some time soon. Again, these people show incompetence and disregard for their customers!

I called about interest paid on my vehicle for my taxes. I was asked for my SSN, I provided it, then the woman put me on hold for 33 minutes, then hanged up on me. While waiting, I called again from another phone and the experience was much better.

Never had a bank rep scream at top of his voice to me over the phone until today. I called M&T bank to make a car payment over the phone since my last bill pay check was not cashed AGAIN ON TIME. YEP, at this point I set up reminders to double check this payment EVERY MONTH because they are incompetent. I was not in the mood to indulge customer service rep "Scott" in his mansplaining on how to use my bill account and his condescending attitude for an additional 10 minutes and screaming at the top of his voice not to interrupt him when I asked to speak to a manager - but of course he transferred me to another agent not the manager. I'll be paying this off with another loan from a different bank. Never again will I do business with M&T.

This bank has been a nightmare for selling our home. The buyers of our home wanted to assume our VA loan, and we were quoted 90 days to close. Then they delayed it. Then, 2 days before closing, they informed us they weren't ready to close. They are basically holding our equity hostage and creating a nightmare for us and our buyers. I feel so trapped and helpless and will be pursuing recourse options. Absolutely the worst.

Received IN THE MAIL, an offer of $500 to open an account with direct deposits. I held my end of the deal and now they won't pay. They said it was only for New England states, and I am in NJ. So a.) why did I get the mailing and b.) why did they allow me to open this account using their promo code? SCAM, SCAM, SCAM.

Extremely disappointed. As a first-time homebuyer, I trusted M&T Bank with my mortgage process. Due to a serious error by one of their employees, I lost the condo I was approved for. No real accountability, just apologies and dismissiveness. I would never recommend them.
