I opened my checking and saving account in M&T over 3 years ago. I am on J-1 visa and I am working at a research institute right now. I have lived in the US for over 6 years and my husband and I started a green card application process. This is my first credit card application in the US. I previously had credit cards in other countries. Since I had been reasonably satisfied with M&T, I applied for a Visa credit card and was told that it should not be a problem as I fulfill all requirements. But I got rejected and the reason is that I am NOT A PERMANENT US RESIDENT. Although the federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibits creditors from discriminating against credit applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, etc. The reason they are giving me is discrimination.

They did not ask me to provide any employment information, so they have no idea whether I could pay money back on time or not. I am assuming that using "Permanent US resident" as the only variable to draw their conclusion, many of your customers might have churned. I am very disappointed with M&T, and I want to specifically mention two points: 1) If they do not accept non-resident application, why not advertise this on your website. Then I do not need to waste my time applying for it, especially after telling me that I fulfill all requirements!; 2) I am not sure whether their rejection will affect my credit history. I heard it will.

I am not upset that my application was denied because I am not a US resident. M&T has every right to protect its interests and be conservative (even though their reason is somewhat questionable). What I am upset about is the way this entire situation has been handled. But mostly, I am upset that I have an unnecessary hard pull on my credit report that could have been easily avoided with a bit of communication and better processes. I am hugely disappointed with M&T and will take my business elsewhere, not to mention that I won't recommend M&T.

The worst possible place to have a mortgage. I did not pick it. Was transferred to them. I will be done soon and will NEVER recommend them to anyone. How do they get away with it. Example: called 4x for an answer. Each time they said it would be researched and they would get back to me. They never did. That is only one example. STAY AWAY if you can.

M&T has to be the worst bank that I have ever dealt with. We own a small business and had 3 accounts with M&T Bank for the past 5 years (started when they were Provident Bank). Out of the blue we got a call from a company that had an automatic payment from one of the accounts call us to say that they payment did not go through. We were a little surprised since there was over $35,000 in the combined accounts and the bill was $150. My wife called their Customer Service (on the weekend) to see what was going on and they said that their system was down, and to call back on Monday.

When she called on Monday she was told that all of our accounts had been closed by M&T. She was shocked and asked why, and was told that they periodically review business accounts and decide which ones are "worth keeping." They further said that we should have known this because we were sent a letter a month earlier. My wife asked if it was a certified letter and they said no. I was and still am in shock. We have kept an average balance over the years of $25,000 in the accounts and never had an issue, and they close our accounts because they feel we are not worthy of them.

We are going over this afternoon to get a certified check for our balance and read them the riot act. How dare they. Then we will go to either PNC Bank or SunTrust and re-open new accounts. Once that is done we will be writing letters to the M&T Board, the BBB, and anyone else who will listen. I hope this joke of a bank goes under and soon.

Doing business with M&T is not recommended for a multitude of reasons. First of all, their customer service is the worst of all companies still alive today: waiting times of 45min average, rude answers, people sending you through to equally ignorant others all the time etc. Secondly, their processes are 1950s at best; even for a money transaction people start planning conference calls together and it can take days. Thirdly, they fail to communicate what they change to you, so you may find your account completely blocked for no reason, with their IT-system not allowing them to unblock it. Finally, they suggested that I'd identify myself through my lawyer (?), which is costly, not what lawyers are for, and entirely pointless. All in all, don't waste your money on these suckers.

I have disliked M&T bank mortgage since I had my mortgage switched to them when I was having some money problems. I was never a month late but was paying after the deadline for having to pay late payment and I paid those too. If you call they treat you like a criminal saying that anything you say will be used to collect a debt and when I asked about it they say supposedly because they are in New York and is something they have to say for legal reasons. That is very creepy and extremely unfriendly.

Also my payment keeps going up because of shortage of escrow but then they have had to send me money back two years during the last 5yrs. Also they charge for Mortgage insurance even though my payment is made every month before it is due for the last 15 months. I can't wait until I sell my house. I will always stay away from M&T bank. I have had to send a written notice for them not to call me for any reason because I am so offended by the fact they always state that they are there to collect a debt. I had to give them one star to put this review in but they don't deserve one.

My husband has a small business account with M&T and two days ago his ex partner walked into the Rockville MD branch and wrote two checks to himself in the amount of $6450.00, cleaning out the account. Back in September and again in January, the branch was informed verbally and via two written letters that the partner was no longer with the company and to remove him as signer. My husband also provided them a copy of the state document that documented the separation. My husband is the account owner so you would think this would not be an issue right?

Now here we are. The ex partner cashed two checks, one written using the business name and another written using his name as the account holder with the company acct number. And what does M&T say? "There is nothing they can do, he was an account signer and he could take the money without question." Oddly enough, and contrary to what he was told in September, the letters written by him as account holder and owner of the company are worthless because he did not according to them, sign a new signature card. We have filed criminal charges with the State's Attorney and are planning a civil suit against the ex partner and the bank. I hope they all rot.

I tried to log into Online banking. User ID and password established a few weeks ago and working until last week with a message "ID and password do not match". After 3 more tries I was unable to continue. A message to contact their 800 telephone appeared. I called that number which was answered after 30 minutes. Margin was told about my problem but had to switch me to a different department. Keith answered and told me he could not help. I would have to go to the local branch since the account was frozen.

When I asked when and why the answer was it was frozen in 2015 because of a fraud alert, which is correct. My question why I had been able to access the account until today he could not answer. I will go to the branch to close my account which I have had for over 15 years. I need to say that the only reason I stayed with M&T was the excellent service of the branch in Hampstead. Telephone Customer service has always been unacceptable.

First you have to love a society where banks purposely bet against homeowners and devise algorithms that predict who will eventually get foreclosed on (toxic loan sales). I bought a house and the mortgage was through Wells Fargo. It was sold to another bank. Then a third, M&T. Never did I want to have any interaction with M&T. I was forced into it when I got my first mortgage bill from them. I have a 5.5% fixed rate. Yet, our mortgage payment continually increases. What started out at 1170 per month is now 1344 - same house, same interest rate. The reason? Not enough in escrow. Yes, right, an extra 2300/year for what exactly? Every single rule is set up to protect banks and screw over homeowners. There is a very serious problem in our country. It is no longer of any benefit to purchase a home. In fact it is more likely to cause negative financial outcomes than positive.

Specific to M&T - they are criminals - stealing money from hardworking Americans who are simply trying to live their lives. I can't help but wonder if our government is simply there to represent us why didn't the American citizens themselves have an opportunity to decide whether or not to "bail out" banks? The system is corrupt and evil and M&T offers perhaps the best classic example of this disgustingly rigged system where corporations cannot fail and homeowners are not allowed to succeed.

I opened a small checking account with M&T along with a safe deposit box about a year ago. I never got around to using either. Since the checking account was supposed to be free of service charges, I didn't give it a second thought - it would be there if I needed it, and if not, I could just close it out and get my money back. Not quite. First of all, the safe deposit box that I never used came up for renewal at the end of February - even though I opened it in mid-March and paid for a full year in advance. I got the renewal notice on 23 February and had only 3 days to get into the bank and close the box, which had to be done in person. Then when I tried to close my supposedly free checking account I found that very nearly my entire deposit had been eaten up by fees that were charged against it because I never used the account! Expensive lesson - avoid this bank like the plague.

M&T sent priority letters informing me that I had to contact them at a certain phone number for verification of my identity. I did this and was told by customer service I had to call the individual branch where my account originated which I did but since they were always closed at 4 pm (I live 14 hours time difference), I left a message explaining my situation. Customer service also said that they would "try to inform" the branch office that I had contacted them.

Today (160228) I received my check of money with the notice that my account had been closed. The issue is Fed Identity check. I have had the account for over ten years and only when I changed my official mailing address to Tokyo about six months ago (prior to that I used my son's US address) did I begin to have this problem.

This bank operates like it is the 1980s still. Takes 6+ days for checks to clear. Highest overdraft amount anywhere @ $38.50 up to 5 times per day. They are very shifty in their accounting and documentation as well. They show checks as posted in ledger but they are still pending. You are supposed to know that they haven't cleared by the receipt you receive from ATM. That's right ATM. No mobile deposit app. Also if calling the 800 number average hold times are 15 - 25 min to talk to a person which are unable to do anything without a supervisor which takes another 10 minutes. I was lured in by the $150 bonus for signing up. Ended up paying more than that in fees even though the balance of my account never reached 0.

I know this maybe sounds like sour grapes but trust me it's like going back 30 years in banking. No mobile deposit app, horrible customer service, long hold times and wonky and misleading balance information. I even tried going back to the old pen and paper to balance old school style but still fell short because of the excessive check holds even if you have money in the account to match the check.

Due to some difficulties I had missed payments on my balance totaling less than $300.00. This year, M&T reported late payments to credit bureaus and will not extend courtesy of taking back this reporting. Never ever get a credit card from M&T bank again. The local branch manager, who has run the bank for 5 years, didn't even know how to set up a bank account. Other branches have had 1 teller available, during peak hours, on FRIDAYS. The people at the branches will give you information that will screw you over. When you call the main number to ask what happened, they will contradict what they told you at the branch. This has happened a half dozen times to me in a year or so. Finally, if you make a mistake and overdraw even 50 cents, they will charge you $38.50. Though they contradict each other in almost everything they say, it's the one and only thing that they drill into their employee's heads. They want that fee more than anything.

You can tell them you'll replace the money right this second, and that you're unemployed and need the cash for groceries. I've gone into the location, gotten supervisors at corporate on the phone, none of them will help. The last lady I spoke to pretended to look at my account for literally less than 5 seconds to "see if she could help." When I asked what she saw in my account that determined she couldn't she said "the policy." You saw the policy IN my account? And in a couple seconds, no less? AND you're a supervisor, and didn't know the policy? What a bunch of incompetent, lying, bloodsucking crooks. Enjoy lining your pockets with that $38.50, your CEO doesn't make enough. I feel like everyone else on here. M&T Bank charges fraudulent insufficient fees so they can make money. My husband got paid on a Friday and Saturday we put his check in the bank. Before work on the following Monday I put $115 in cash in the ATM to make sure nothing would bounce. That following Monday his check cleared and then charges were taken out from the weekend and we still had money in the bank according to the online statement. Well two days later they charged us 5 insufficient fund fees of $38.50 each which brought our account to the negative. I was like "how is that when online it doesn't show any negative except the ones due to them, taking money that isn't there and there was a pending a deposit as well". I was expecting to see a little money but nope. None, we were broke. My husband called customer service and they were like "manage account better and it isn't our fault".

"Yes it is. You took money that wasn't there for money that was there". He said "well even though your account was not negative and the charges were pending for Monday they were still there and you didn't have money". He was like "I put a check in the bank first thing Saturday since we were told as long you put the money in within 24 hours or before they clear". This guy got pissed off and basically called him a liar, that they are in the money business. So he pretty much said they are all about managing your money so they can make money. That they lie so you will do thing so they can get money. What a crock, a crap. Then today 10/23/15 they charged us two more charges for charges that have been sitting there since Tuesday, probably because my husband asked "could they charge anymore?" and he said "no not unless something else hits in two days." Well nothing has and they did for something that has been there when the other charges were hit.

Now we owe them almost $200 which they are taking out of my paycheck that went in today. Late bills because of this mess. I sent in a complaint to LawyersandSettlements because they are investigating this bank and many more for these unlawful practices to take money from their customers. I hope to get my money back and some for pain and suffering. If they have wronged you it is free to submit a claim and I would do it. Let them know we aren't taking their crap anymore. Oh and Saturday morning we are closing our account and telling them to go jump in a river with their unethical practices.

Our mortgage loan was bought by M&T Bank after falling behind a few payments this last winter. My husband, who is self-employed, had to have surgery and was off his feet for three months and unable to work. Since this time, we attempted twice to do a loan modification to get caught back up and were denied both times. We were told that we could NOT make any payments while this process was taking place, unless the payment was for the full amount owed. After the second denial, we were told that our loan was going into foreclosure and that we needed to go through the attorney that was assigned to our case. We repeatedly asked for the payoff balance to get things back on track (before the foreclosure had even begun!) and were told it would take days, but instead it took weeks and nobody ever got back to us after repeated phone calls.

By not giving us the balance due, the foreclosure process has continued and now we owe thousands of dollars in additional fees. We requested that those fees be reduced and were told we would have an answer within two days. Two weeks later and the payment is due in full in three days. Not willing to reduce anything, we are having to pay a ridiculous amount to have our loan reinstated. Had this bank just given us the amount that we needed to pay prior to sending it to foreclosure, all of this would have been avoided. The fact that they refused to tell us what we needed to pay and instead went forward with the process without giving us the opportunity to get caught up, which we could have done, we ended up in this horrible situation. I have nothing good to say about our experience with this company and feel completely violated as a consumer. The check is in the mail, paid in full, for way more money than it should have been.

If you walk in their bank and you are black they give you an eye to tell you, you are not welcome here. The manager I interview with Mrs. Amy ** at Potomac Maryland branch did not even want to interview me. I arrived on time but it took her 1 hr to arrive to interview me. When I arrived and asked for a Manager I was told why I am there for. The minute she saw me, she was uninterested. I received a letter from human resources stating: After careful consideration, the position was offered to another candidate. We could then transfer funds as we needed from right online from our account to hers. We have done this for years with Chase and Capital one. Come to find out after being told there were no fees for transfers that there is a $3.00 fee per transfer, plus if using Quicken to manage the M&T account they require $9.95 subscription per month or $119.40 per year to do what Chase and Capital one never charges a fee for using Quicken to access and upload/download to & from their accounts.

But what really pushed me over the top with this bank, was the abrupt and rude customer service workers I had to speak with reached on their toll free customer service line to clarify these fees. I was all but told I could bank elsewhere if I didn't want to pay the fees. I figured I'd go back to where this mess started and called the branch and spoke with the branch manager and explained what I was told by the ass't branch manager when I opened the account last month and what I have discovered since. The assistant branch manager called me back and simply confirmed these fees can't be avoided.

After having direct deposits established with M&T, I have decided to change my direct deposits back to my other checking account that I thankfully didn't close out, and once they are assigned back, I will be promptly closing the M&T accounts.

I'm looking for M&T to give me more information as to why it was so easy for someone to access my account and withdraw all of my money; I need M&T to tell me why all of their members don't have a more secure and protected ATM cards and machines at their bank locations.

Im sure Im not the first customer to experience this kind of situation. My question is why do we the customer have to suffer and wait two week for you all to try to resolve fraudulent activities because your bank didn't send all of its member a secure card with a chip when you all are well aware of how advanced these scammer are. M&T denied my claim. They just lost a customer and I'm going to make sure to tell all my family and friends and anyone I come across to never bank with M&T. My property taxes are paid in November and the Insurance are disbursed on June.

I opened my account with M&T in 2007. At that time they had a free savings with the checking. I know this because I have never had money to save, I was a single mother. So there was never a balance nor a fee for the account. Jump up to 2014, I had been out of work and my boyfriend who also banked at M&T decided rather than carry my card with him he would add his name to my account, link to his card so he could deposit money now and again to keep the checking account open. In the meantime, I had to rent my house or lose it, so I used the savings as an escrow account for the security deposit. I noticed though that around the time I deposited money in that account, they started taking money out. I called three times, each time I was told no changes had occurred and I should come in. Well I had been ill but finally went in with my boyfriend over his account issues and did discuss my issue with a manager.

IT seems my savings was to be charged 7.50 a month (no notice to me, just charges) unless I kept a balance of 500.00. I would have closed it immediately. But I didn't know, she credited 3 of the charges and I had that amount in there for the security deposit which I explained to her could not be touched. We had a detailed discussion about those funds and my situation. She never explained that the accounts changed at any point in time, that the savings was also joint (linked) and that since he was having issues with his personal checking that they could take my escrow funds.. which right after crediting me 22.50 in fees, they took everything. It's not even my debt.. and it wasn't my money in that account.

I requested the funds back, both the fees - $82.50 and the amount they took, 501.00, but they declined. Although they did admit nothing about the savings account had changed from the time I had it in 2007. So why then, when I had not one penny in that account.. for years at a time, was I never charged a dime, then in 2014, they decided to take 7.50 a month out for services fees. I provided statements, with no balance and no fees in 2013 and even some in 2014. They changed something, their savings accounts limits, types of accounts, something, but never notified me.

In addition, they have the right to offset, if you owe them money, which is not the case here. I didn't know it was a joint account but ok, my boyfriend's name is on my account. So it's a joint account.. and they waited until his debt in fees was enough to equal that in my account and zero balanced my account out. How is that fair or reasonable? I'm not working and I can't pay that back.. my boyfriend will straighten this out with them. I want them to replace my money. There have got to be some boundaries with these banks. Beginning with this..

I called to M&T's attention that my account was charged for Time Warner Cable Bills in NY and I am a Maryland resident. NOTE Maryland does not have Time Warner. Opening a cable account requires a name, address, social security number etc. In addition to Time Warner my account was used for unauthorized Overstock, Amazon and Victoria Secret over a weekend. All of these charges were also credited then denied. Can I file disputes again and reopen this case?

Another business customer and I stood there at the door, dumbfounded, at 4:17 - what kind of bank that even HOPES to serve small business customers closes at four in the afternoon? I thought I was lucky to get there before 5... it would be BETTER if they were open until 6. I moved my accounts FROM KeyBank TO M&T when KeyBank shortened its banking hours. They tried to get people to be okay with nine to three but it really only worked out for retired people. They have since lengthened their hours. Maybe I need to go back there?

M&T obtains forced homeowner's insurance for property owners that do not provide "proof of insurance." In the event of a claim on the property, M&T sends the homeowners instructions on how to handle the claim with its chosen insurer (with the insurance that you are charged for) and a check is written to both M&T and the insured (the homeowner). However, in the case at hand, and I am sure many others because I was told so by M&T representatives, M&T is refusing to turn over the insurance funds because the property is in foreclosure and in an underhanded manner (and fraudulent) keeps the insurance funds to pay down the mortgage, leaving the homeowner to foot the property damage claim or forego the repairs. THIS IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN.

Updated on 07/27/2015: Just got off the phone with M&T Bank. Now they claim that they are looking at reimbursing me for insurance claim that I had to pay out of pocket to protect the real property, but they want to do an inspection first. Nowhere does their paperwork indicate this nor does the forced insurance policy they obtained and billed me for. But alas M&T, this phone call for approximately minutes) is, to the best of my knowledge, the 7th, at some point you are obligated to deal with consumers in good faith, which you are not. You have violated the FDCPA by making it impossible to be reimbursed for an insurance claim with your forced insurance in a money grab to pay down your mortgage in a deceptive manner... You already told me the claim may not be paid because the property is in foreclosure, now a new story on the 7th or 8th phone call?

The charges were $137.82 and the company verified that they reversed the charges. I wrote them a message when my account was credited twice for the same amount for a fraudulent account. I wanted to be honest and make sure the extra money in my account was taken out. The letter was very rude saying that the transactions were processed correctly and my claim was denied.

I admit I was upset. I had just got out of the hospital with thyroid cancer and not feeling well. It seems I keep getting cancer in various parts of my body. I warned the girl who called herself Nora, that I was very angry and knew that this was not her fault but I did need to blow off steam. I repeated this several times during the conversation and apologized for my spouting off. I even said "I would like to find out who made these charges and go shoot them." About an hour later 4 policeman were banging at my door. They said this Nora said I was suicidal and threaten to take a gun and shoot someone because I was turned down for a loan.

Tomorrow I will contact an attorney, close my account and sue this bank. I am embarrassed because my neighbors now think I am crazy and if my place of work hears this I could lose my job. This is not the first time I have had M and T screw up my account but it is the first time one of their representatives tried and maybe succeeded in ruining my life. Never use this bank... ever!!!

I have had a car loan with M&T for 5 years. I had 3 payments left. 3. For the past two years, M&T would "confuse" payments from my husband and I, posting them to the wrong accounts, then charging a late fee to the other one. We sent checks with account numbers in red ink. We sent checks in with pay stubs. We paid online. Time after time, we were reported to Equifax with a late payment as they posted the payments to the wrong account, the one that was current, letting the deadline pass on the other. We disputed the issue and received a letter stating that they were responsible ONE TIME. Finally having enough, I went online, pulled up our two accounts and clicked on my loan. It said "click here" for today's payoff figure on this loan. THIS LOAN. So I followed the link and paid it In full. Guess what? M&T posted the amount to my husband's account and reported my payment as late. Unbelievable.

After calling the Credit/Dispute center I was assigned someone to look into it. She did and told me that their computer showed that I clicked on my husband's loan and posted the payment to that account. They have screenshots? Right. I magically pulled the exact payoff amount for that exact day out of my **. They are refusing to do anything about it. But then I got an email from another department saying my Title was clear and in the mail. So will they fix their error and repair my credit, NOPE. They still say I paid on the wrong loan. To make matters worse, they self monitor. Internal investigation. Their people covering for their people. Recording payments late and scooping up late fees. Sitting on deposits and posting them late. Crooks.

So, they were basically charging unlawful fees to the customers, pretended that they were following the legal order, but not really. The consumer (Me!) end up having to pay at the end! M & T told me that the dispute can last up to 60 days, but I would get a provisional refund within 10 days. I look at my account online daily and saw the transaction under pending on Monday June 29th, and it was taken out of my account on Tuesday June 30th. I called them on Tuesday to get an update, and the customer service agent could not tell me what had be done yet to resolve this issue. Just the same standard response of 10 days I will receive a provisional refund.

I spoke to the merchant where the error occurred and he had already spoken to his bank about the dispute that was coming from M & T and that the bill was paid with another credit card. So I waited the 10 days (what choice did I have). I just called M & T, July 8th to inquire as to why the funds have not been deposited into my account. This is the 11th day since I filled the dispute. But they only count business days so I asked "Then the funds should be deposited into my account on Friday the July 10th?" Right? Wrong!!

NOW to wait until the 14th to get my provisional credit back to my account. They did not start counting the 10 days until the 30th. I called the merchant to see what was happening at his end. He called his bank and was informed that they have not received any correspondence for M & T yet. M & T are crooks. Problems should be handle in a timely manner. They are playing the float game. Banks can do overnight deposit into the Federal Reserve for very small interest rate. So the longer they can keep our money the more money they can make off of our money. Yes my $1200 dispute is small by itself but if M & T is doing this on a regular basis they are making a nice "free" profit. I will be sending this complaint to Senator Schumer.

About 4 years ago M & T had to change their way of doing business after the government declared their practice unfair. I think it's time for them to look at M & T again. I will be letting my feet do my talking to them also. I will be closing my 2 business accounts and my 2 personal accounts. Not only does this company do almost everything important by snail-mail, their customer service is by far the worst I have ever seen. The staff are not knowledgeable, they copy and past responses rather than actually read what you ask of them. (It generally takes around 4 replies to get it through their head what you need from them.) Their company lacks any infrastructure to let you know when important things happen.

You requested that a document be mailed to vehicle registration? That is obviously much too complicated to ask through their "fancy" messaging center. I had to call them, twice. The first time, the lady didn't put in the request properly. The second time, upon my questioning about verification of shipment - MTB does not offer email, phone, text or any other form of notification to let you know that they have completed an action as requested. I was told that I had to keep calling their company to check on the status of a document being mailed off. Really? Just to see if you mailed it? Now, in addition to that, M&T Bank takes anywhere from 3 to 7 days to reply to a message on their website. By phone, you are looking at a half hour to an hour wait, from nice but unskilled workers. By email, the response time is around 2 weeks.

All of this blows my mind. I have never before worked with ANY company that was so utterly incompetent in its own field of work. Since taking up M&T Bank, I have had nothing but trouble. I tell everyone I know (and their mother) to not touch M&T Bank with a 40-foot pole. Especially if you are military. M&T Bank will fail you every time, even on the SIMPLE things - which are exacerbated when you are already pressed for time. If I could give MTB a "no stars," I would. I would even go as far as to giving them negative stars, for having no clue as to what the hell they are doing, 100% of the time. I have not had a single support ticket resolved in less than 2 messages. Will be refinancing after the loan has been held with them for a complete year, so it looks better on my credit report. If I have $20 scheduled to debit from my account on a Tuesday, they will withdraw the funds on Monday and list the automatic payment as pending. I have another automatic payment that was supposed to be deducted on the 15th; however, they didn't debit the amount from my checking account on the 15th and I used my debit card on the same day which I would not have had enough funds for had they debited my account.

I realized that night what I had done and checked my account online throughout the night past midnight and saw that they never debited my account. I deposited funds the next morning to cover the debit transaction I had placed and then saw that M&T withdrew the funds but used the previous date and subsequently charged me an overdraft fee. Had they deducted the automatic payment on the date they were supposed to, I wouldn't have been able to use my debit card in the first place.

It's as if M&T will adjust deductions to your account based on what your current available balance is rather than the date the deduction is scheduled to take place. They will take it out a day or two early and list it as pending if it brings your available balance to a negative but will delay it by a day without a pending notification and give you the opportunity to still use the funds that should be going towards the automatic payment. Either way, they are going to give you an NSF fee.

And as far as the credit card is concerned...they can charge it off. Sure it'll ruin my credit but unless I can find a job soon it'll be ruined anyway.

We have been customers for years paying a car loan from M&T bank and the payments were automatically drafted out of the bank. We never were late on a payment and relied on M&T to draft them as they normally did for years. We received a phone call wherein they demanded a payment of over 2K. When I asked why, they stated that we were 2 weeks late on our payment. I asked them why they didn't automatically withdraw the payment for about $500 as they have done for years. They stated that the loan had come to mature and the balance was due (about 2K).

This was the collections part of M&T that has called us which was even more surprising. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. You see, several years back, M&T lied to it's customers by sending out Christmas time skip a payment option, wherein a customer could skip a payment and M&T would simply extend the loan payment out so that the customer would make the payment later when the monthly payment was added on at the end of the loan.

In other words, you would just make that payment later and the interest would add up of course to where you may have an extra payment to make which would be no larger than your monthly payment. Well, we did this about 3-4 times over the years of the loan. M&T mysteriously couldn't locate this option in their records, even though our record showed there was never a late payment and there were no missed payments. This is a classic case of complete incompetence. They also could not explain why they refused to draft the regular payment amount of our bank as they always did.

They also couldn't explain why they took over 2 weeks to call our phone number to advise that they CHOSE not to withdraw the normal monthly payment (same cell phone number for over 8 years!). Rather than M&T make things right by simply taking the regular payment until the loan was paid off over the next few months, they instead wanted us "to settle" and agree this was a settlement and we would pay the balance over the next few months but they would report it negatively on our perfect credit report.

NO M&T, we of course paid the full balance on the spot but I can tell you, We will never do business with them again. This is how they treat customers who have always paid by auto draft on time and never with a discrepancy. These are thugs who are not good at customer service or common sense. Beware, stay away! I plan on advising the VA, DoD, and every military member I know about the business practices of this unscrupulous corporation. They tried to hurt this MILITARY family and they sold out their credibility for a few thousand bucks. Sad, very sad M&T. MILITARY AND VETERAN FAMILIES, PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THEM AND GO WITH A REPUTABLE BANK!

M&T Bank "opened an investigation" and after calling them four times to see what they have found... no one EVER returned my call. I have had several late fees with them and have never been late on a mortgage payment before this! Needless to say I refinanced with USAA. M&T Bank needs to take some lessons from USAA about customer service and how to treat customers. I will never do business with them again!!

After 6 months of calling and visiting the bank they finally closed the account and reissued a new one, but will not fix the late payment status and delinquent status they created. The account had an auto payment linked to it from the checking, yet they said it was our fault for not transferring it. They recommended opening all new accounts not us, every time I call them it is at least a 15 minute wait to talk to someone before you get back on hold. What a joke, should I call a lawyer?

Shortly after it was purchased we started receiving phone calls from Bayview Financial requesting we sign a new mortgage agreement which would increase the term of our mortgage. Now for a little over 2 years I have been constantly harassed by Bayview loan services concerning my home mortgage with M&T. M&T transfers my calls directly to Bayview. I have provided proof of payment on numerous occasions showing where none have ever been missed or late.

I have been given multiple reasons and have been told numerous outright lies. For the last year and a half I have been recording all of my phone calls with them. I do not have the extra money for an attorney. I have contacted numerous credit agencies as they have reported me 8 months late on payments. Yet I have never missed a payment. On Monday, M & T still had not credited the deposit because per the bank, "a deposit does not process until the next business day - in this case, Tuesday." However, they had no problem processing checks written against my account on Saturday and Monday - overdrawing the account. They also had no problem charging my account on Saturday and Monday for non-sufficient funds at the tune of $38.50... 6 times!!! "Open for business" apparently means only "business" that favors the bank - not the customer. M & T stands for "manipulators" and "thieves." Avoid this bank at all cost! After reviewing my M&T account online I noticed my account was negative almost $400. Seven charges totaling over $1000 were made to a Shaklee corporation. I was not notified by m&t to notify me of these charges or that my account was overdrawn. I called m&t and spoke with a representative telling me that they would dispute charges and it could take up to 10 day to see money in my account again. Also that they could not issue me a new card till my card was in a positive balance. This is absolutely unfathomable that a person as this being their only way of obtaining money to go 10 days with no source of income and having bills to pay.

I then spoke to a supervisor by the name of Aris that stated she worked in the Delaware customer service office. She stated to me if I could call this corporation and have them fax some form to m&t bank stating that they would not process the charges I could get my money back. She also stated she tried googling them and she's pretty sure they're a made up company and that there was nothing she could do. I was just going to have to wait For the 10 days but maybe 5 days because she can obviously see the company is not a legitimate company. If that's the case why should it take that long? I received absolutely no resolution that could help me or my family in this situation that I should have been notified of immediately. What kind of bank will not protect their customers? I will be switching banks immediately when this is resolved.

In the course of less than two months, this bank extracted over $5100 in overdraft fees that were not necessary. I was in no way notified or aware of any overdrafts as we had other resources to cover any or all non sufficient funds and would have done so immediately. In a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, the response from the bank said we were notified by mail. I did not see one overdraft notice in the mail. They also stated that the signers were called every day. That is a complete falsehood. When I found out about the overdraft, I immediately demanded to see the manager. My first question was “why didn't you call me.” His response was and I quote, “I have over 400 customers, do you think I have time to call when there is an overdraft?" Not even one courtesy call? Yet the response from the bank was that we were called every day. Completely untrue.

The other question I had was why would they continue to pay over 100 overdrawn checks? Why not stop the generosity? The reason was there was no risk at all, the checks were all covered with the deposits. In some cases they would overdraft the same day the deposit were in to cover them. The bank contends that they did me a courtesy by paying the checks. A $5100 courtesy? There was no risk and an easy way to induce fees. I told the manager he did me no favors and I would have preferred he bounced the first check and saved me over $5000. As I stated we have other resources and would have covered them if we had known. He got very angry and said he would not pay any more overdrafts. Thank you as there would be no more, now that we know. Before we closed the account, we made out one last check that was already made out through this account. They held the deposit so they could bounce the check.

On another matter. We bought a business and the name legally. The former owner of the business has an account there under the name we purchased. We told the manager to close the account as it is illegal. He refused even though he knows it is illegal. The results of my complaining to the BBB is that I can no longer bank with M&T, not that I want to. They did find a bank error in the account and reversed $160. They returned $500 as a "courtesy". My next step is New York financial services and possibly small claims court.

On that day, there were roughly 35-40 authorizations that went through in Kansas City, MO, and Canada for a ton of different stores. M&T stopped and killed the card as I was in the store attempting to purchase Christmas gifts, that's great, I thought M&T was actually on my side when I found out my card was compromised. I filed the dispute, the money was put back into my account, and now, I am finding out that M&T is saying that these charges are valid. The charges originated from KANSAS CITY MO. And I was in BALTIMORE MD attempting to purchase Christmas gifts for my daughter at Arundel Mills Mall.

The thief had the first package to my house, I went to the bank and asked what do I do with this as I didn't order it! And now I'm being told because of that $9.95 package (the very first transaction that went through), which I never ordered and again, it was done in, again, Kansas City MO at the same time I was in Baltimore MD, that M&T is now taking the $296.42 out of my account because the transaction was valid. How was I in two parts of the country at the same time? M&T has the IP address showing where the transactions came from, in Kansas City MO. I need help. I can't afford to have almost $300 stolen from me. I have no problems bringing in the police Dept to investigate as I did nothing wrong, and I did not do any of the transactions that were authorized by M&T, and none that were processed by M&T. I have also filed a complaint with the Attorney General of Maryland.

I called to complain the first time and after dealing with a very rude customer service person, they finally agreed to drop it "one time only" and told me I'd be responsible for a late fee even if there was a hurricane next time. This is just the most recent complaint of several bad experiences! The first week in Dec., a day before I was to take a traditional trip to NY, my bank card was denied for lunch!? I called to see why this happened. I was told my card had been compromised in OCTOBER and was cancelled to prevent fraud. Ok first, why not cancel right away? Second, why was I not notified? They told me a new card had been sent in a plain envelope with a letter of explanation back in October. If I received it, obviously, the card had not been activated. Not knowing there was a problem, I wasn't looking for a new card, as I had just received a new card since the previous was very worn. Call me foolish but since I can get alerts for everything, calls and emails about new offers etc., I would assume something like cancelling a card would have the same courtesy.

So this gets better. I explained I was at work, I get off at 5:00, 40 miles from home, about 25 miles from the nearest M&T BANK, gas tank near empty and I leave tomorrow at 6:00 AM for a bus trip and all my money is in the bank. I got 'we are sorry but we can send a new card.' "Luckily" I found a drive thru open until 6:00, I made it by 5:30 anxious but relieved! Until, after explaining my relief and situation, the "kind" gentlemen behind the window informed me they do not do counter checks at the drive thru!! I explained again my inability to get money any other way. He said sorry it would have been best to bring a check with me. Hahaha. I haven't written a check in years so I didn't have a check book. After 15 mins. (not kidding) of banter he leaned forward, looked at me from behind his microphone and said "so exactly how much do you need? I will make a one time only exception but do not expect this courtesy to happen again!" Along with a pulse that would have kept me in a hospital, I finally got MY money..not his.

I had been promised a new card in 3 days which was already inconvenient for anytime, but this was Christmas shopping time. 10 days later and 2 bills that initially showed paid from this account were rejected along with late fees, I received my card! Other than 1 lady at the branch close to me, the customer service in the drive thru and on the phone was at very least, unacceptable! As soon as time allows and I can get a true balance (another story of how transactions get posted then removed), I will be CLOSING this 20+ yr. account!! They may not care that I leave as I do not have an abundance of my hard earned money in there, but I will be happy to NEVER give them another penny for anything! Now telling me they will be on my statement until I pay it. Very unfair to come up with fees from 2009 after I get my bill current. Also I pay $584 monthly and $14.00 goes to principal. I went to M&T Bank to apply for an auto loan. They told me the car was too old for collateral. So I tried an unsecured loan that was also denied. My credit score is in the 700s. I don't see what the problem is. But another bank met my needs. I went to close my account with M&T Bank and they could care less about me leaving their bank. Not to mention the woman took so long to get my money I started looking to see where she went. Then the other woman has seen that I was looking at them. Then I could hear them talking the one said I was staring. Service at that location was never good either.

I was applying to have my loan modified since I was behind due to being on a leave of absence from work. I was waiting in an appeal since my first claim was denied due to doctor error on my files. I contacted M&T bank numerous times to let them know the situation and they contacted me as well by phone. They told me every time to just let them know when a decision is made. Not once did they ever say my home was in foreclosure. One day, an investor called me about buying my home and renting it back to me so I could stay there. I asked why I would do that, and he said my house was being auctioned the next day!! Not one time did anyone from M&T bank tell me what was going to happen. No letters, no phone calls, absolutely nothing!!! I even spoke to them a week before and no one said anything about an auction to me. I was advised everything was fine! If you are doing a modification, check online to make sure your house isn't on the auction block because they sure as hell won't tell you!!

I deposited a check for $100. I always check my available balance and total balance so I know what checks to write. The $100 check was cleared so I wrote the checks I needed to write. Three days later I go online to check my available balance so I know how much money to deposit to write more checks and apparently the $100 check I deposited was reversed and I was charged 2 overdraft fees totaling $77 because I had insufficient funds in my account. I went ahead and called customer service to explain that it didn't make sense because my available said I had enough money in my account to clear the checks I wrote. I was told that the check didn't clear and there was nothing that they can do and to make matters worse I was told by a supervisor that I should collect the overdraft fees from the person that wrote me the check, now how professional is that? I tried to explain that if it says I have money in my available that means that's money I can spend, it's not my total available. They had no comforting answer for me. I am tired of this bank's nonsense and lack of customer respect so therefore I will no longer bank with M&T bank ever again nor recommend it.

Last year our Mortgage account was sold to M&T Bank Mortgage. The customer service is horrible and they do everything they can to make your payment late. This includes processing your payment late, only accepting online payments on business days, and charging extra fees anyway they can. I never had a late fee until my mortgage was transferred without my knowledge to M&T Bank from Bank of America. It took me 2 months to be able to make a payment cause when I call M&T they would give me the run around. They also have added a high risk insurance premium that I didn't have at my previous lender.

The relationship has ended for this customer with this bank. I have been a client of M&T Bank since 1986. I was covered under their "free checking" because I held over $5,000 in our joint savings account. No more. Seems I'm losing that free checking starting Jan 13, 2015. Sucks when they have to pay out US$2.9 million to check account customers they screwed over.

I had no idea of the screw job they've given to BoA mortgage holders OR the NSF fees they bilked others out of. Thank God for the internet and people willing to speak up. Guess what M&T - you're losing THIS long-term customer. You are NOT going to suck one more cent out of me. A savings account issuing .02% - it won't cover the costs of $14.95 a month for a checking account. I do NOT want to "hold" an "average daily balance" of $5,000 in a checking account with 0% interest. Get it?

I'm not happy about doing this. We held our mortgage, which we paid off in 2006 with this bank. I GREW UP with this bank. We followed the bank when it closed down its CONVENIENT branch in our supermarket to a branch 14 miles away. We have a M&T "points" credit card and have a HELOC with them. This is what's happening. I am closing my savings and checking accounts with them. Then I am canceling the credit card. Then I am paying off the HELOC and they will NOT receive ONE MORE RED CENT from me. I am going to my company's credit union where I will receive free checking instead. Burn the green flag!

I have had this acct for almost a year. When I signed up, I specifically checked "No" for overdraft protection. If I don’t have the money in my checking... decline the purchase, period. I recently submitted a fraud claim that overdrew my acct. While investigating M&T refunded the money. Great. After the investigation was concluded, they sided with the other company and reversed the refund which was going to throw my acct into serious overdrafts. Knowing that this would leave me with no money for 2 whole weeks, and figuring they could simply collect once my direct deposit hit, which it does like clockwork every 2 weeks, I transferred the available cash to my savings.

Well they took the overdraft fees from my savings. I have had overdraft charges before...they've never done this in the past. I called to see why this happened since I do not have overdraft protection... The rep said that she sees where I selected "no" for OD protection but my savings acct is still linked... for some reason... as an over protection acct. How can that be when I opted NOT to have it!!! If the paperwork doesn't match what the customer has requested then someone obviously took it upon themselves to change something somewhere!! I told the rep that I was very disappointed as I was now broke except for the 9 measly bucks they left in my savings... for the next 2 weeks.

The banking history is evident that I get paid consistently every 2 weeks. They couldn't wait until then to collect the funds! Instead they chose to wipe out a loyal customer! Wow! The rep could not explain why it happened... only said she could unlink my savings acct so that it would not happen again. The next day... they took my last 9 bucks! I will be closing this acct next week... I've been hearing good things about Cap one. Plus Cap One has way more atms, which was another issue I had with M&T... not that many atms. Too bad we can’t put our money under the mattress anymore. They're all a bunch of crooks. It’s all about banking with the lesser of several evils... smh...

I sent the original requested forms, then I was repeatedly requested to send additional forms. Finally got to the point where they were now going to review my request. On one form I checked a box that wanted to know if I wanted to 'Keep' or 'Sell' the house. As I was in the process of readying the house for Sale, which I explained to my 'point of contact', I chose 'Sell'. It turns out that these terms mean something different to them. "Sell' means Short Sale, not sure what 'Keep' means to them. Now I have been requested to not only resend the form with 'Keep' checked, I have to resend ALL the original forms. I've been around the block enough to know when I'm being 'played'. I've decided to discontinue the process and hope for the best. I thought this info may serve others who are considering this process.

No idea where to begin and just not enough time and space with my complaints. Here is briefly what they do. I check my account online every day. My last and final transaction with them I checked my acct. at 2:00 in the afternoon on a Thursday and no pending transactions. I checked again at 1:00 am. and still no pending transactions. I felt comfortable that my direct deposit was going in on Friday morning so it would cover transactions coming in that day. Much to my surprise when I checked my acct. at 6:00am on Friday, there was a bank to bank transaction that said it was posted on Thursday and hence overdrew my acct. and I was charged $38.50 by M&T, which is a ridiculously high fee. I asked them how they can post things to my account, along with a deposit and say it came in the day before. I asked them how come it wasn't showing as pending if it came in on Thursday and when you update the accounts on one day, how can you say an item posted the day before?!

I asked them "how do I know it came on the day before?" Because they say so. Any bank I've ever used shows pending items, especially a BANK TO BANK transfer!!! On another occasion I deposited 2 personal checks, which I know they don't release totally for 24 hours but when things came in, they were posted and there was NO negative balance on my acct. I was then charged 2 $38.50 fees for insufficient funds. I asked them how they can charge me if I don't show a negative balance!!!! They said if I click on the check image, a screen pops up that shows negative transactions. I asked them why I would click on a check I deposited and know where it came from and that my daily balance showed no negative balance. I have several complaints out to the CPB and each response from M&T is quoting my transaction history, like I don't know what happened. I responded to them telling them they are not addressing what I'm accusing them of, all they do is quote transactions.

I've complained to the Federal Reserve about them too and their response was that M&T isn't governed by the Fed but a private sector (this is not word for word from them but it was something like that). I told M&T that my goal is to report them so that someone, ANYONE who can do anything about them will closely monitor their practices. I'm hoping I will be part of a litigation against them and get the money back I feel they stole from me in fees by deceiving their customers. It's very questionable that each and every deposit each week seemed to miss covering things by one day so their fees are generated. It's all very sneaky.

So basically that's a brief description of some of the things I've been through with them. Oh and when you go into a branch, they bash Wilmington Trust who they bought out, saying M&T has inherited all of their issues and baggage. I've worked for 2 big banks in my lifetime and I have NEVER seen a bank run like this. What's going to start happening is people will stop putting their money and trust in banks if someone doesn't do something about these banks.

On many occasions I have sent my payment in with 7 days before it is due. On many occasions I have been given a late fee. In 2 instances the due date was a Saturday or Sunday and the check was processed on the following Monday and I received a late fee. On 3 other occasions during blizzards and shut downs in the winter of 2014, my payment was processed late as well and I received a late fee. When I called to inquire I was informed that I should "plan ahead" and send my payment in earlier.

Now how am I supposed to know a blizzard is going to shut down the East Coast and second if they don't go into work to process payments how is that within my control? Now I sent in payment 10 days early. It was processed on the 15th but for the incorrect amount. I now have a threatening "Late Notice" and intent to collect along with more late fees. Further they cashed the check but did not apply the amount to anything, they are just holding it. Maybe it makes them "warm and fuzzy" inside, maybe I am paying their yearly bonuses or for some lube for the next guy. Maybe I should feel lucky, I don't know. Their idea of customer service is to basically point the finger back at the debtor and tell you to mail in payments sooner and to plane better.

Honestly I have never been so abused and put down by a lender. I cannot believe that they are allowed to treat and hold people hostage in this way. In today's world where everything you do is dependent on your credit score (really car insurance, employment, credit cards, housing, and more) for a company to be so haphazard with a mortgage account should be criminal. But we are just the sheep grazing on the leftovers thrown in to the fields. I even tried to refinance. The new bank was treated in the same fashion and had so many hoops to jump in and out of they backed out. So at least it is not just their debtors they are discourteous to, I guess I am not special after all.

At what point do we get any service back for all of the monies we have pumped into these accounts? Now I will await my late fees and most likely another 30 day notice, that I will have to pay and fight to have removed from my credit score. Accountability and personal responsibility, where did it go and when did it become politically incorrect to demand? By the way if you call or contact M&T Bank, don't tell them they suck. They will get all but hurt and threaten to hang up. I would go back to BofA just to not have to deal with this crud anymore.

My mortgage was supposed to be on auto-pay. One month, about a year or 2 into it, they simply didn't deduct the payment from my account. When I called them, it became 'my fault' - I overdrafted, blah, blah, blah. Just plain lies. I tried to physically bring them money - cash, coins, gold, whatever... They wouldn't take a penny. And while they were busy calculating 'penalty' fees, it would stretch into the next payment that they'd refuse to accept. Bottom line is, they caused the automatic payment not to be withdrawn. Someone there logged in and used their codes... most likely someone taking orders from my husband's ex-wife... who just so happens to be a VP loan officer there - coincidence? I think not...

I fought them for a good year and finally through court, got them to accept payments again. I'd gotten smart and sent them a check via certified return receipt every month... If I'd mail a check on the 20th and postmark it for the first, they'd cash it the day it arrived - they're that greedy... which is fine because at least I knew they were cashing my checks. Until January of this year, when a stranger in TEXAS called me to tell me he had my mortgage check!!! Not a bank person, just a random CUSTOMER!!! He happened to be a decent person and tried to deposit my check but M&T gave his branch the same b.s. and wouldn't deposit it... so he kindly mailed it back to me.

My check was defaced with the word 'default' scrawled on it. I had scanned a copy of it before it was mailed and it was in perfect condition to be deposited. Not only had they defaced my check - after a year of accepting my payments - but had sent it to a CUSTOMER. And when I called them, they had all kinds of stories of how I was 13 months behind (yet there I was living in the house and oddly enough all my checks had been cashed). The CS reps lie, misrepresent facts - One of them sent me a letter with the mortgage note I demanded stating that I was 3 payments behind and they had been sent to their attorney... All lies... 2 of the checks had been deposited and the 3rd had been sent to Texas... A far cry from the 13 missed payments quoted to me over the phone.

I've fought them through every agency in the country but no one oversees M&T. That's why they bought the portfolio from BofA... The settlement won't apply to them because they're untouchable. I recommend you run from M&T and have nothing to do with them, ever!

This outfit bought my mortgage in Aug. 2013 from B of A. And my experience with them has been a train wreck ever since. Everything from unreachable "customer service" to not crediting payments. (I've been sitting on hold for the past 45 minutes with their phantom "customer service" agents" as I'm typing this). When they first bought the mortgage, M&T simply refused to send me statements or anything indicating they'd credited the payments I'd made for nearly 3 months. It took me calling multiple times and ultimately filing a complaint with the FDIC to get their attention.

To get away from them, I refinanced my house in April 2014. So far, it's been more than a month, they haven't refunded my escrow as they were legally supposed to. Nor did they credit the last mortgage payment I made to them. Their customer service is non-existent. Their agents are rarely available and even during their restricted hours, they simply don't answer the phone. Must be due to the myriad of complaints about their screw ups.

As far as I can tell they're basically dishonest and should not be allowed to be in the mortgage industry. Ironically, as I've been sitting on hold here all this time, I get to hear repeated recordings - along with a terrible drumline - from them about their refinancing offers. The next step is to file another FDIC compliant. The beauty of this multi-tasking is I'm sure I still have time to do that while I'm still waiting one hold for their phantom "customer service" agents.

Since M&T bought my loan from Bank of America two years ago, my life has been a nightmare.. It is hard to believe a bank can get away with such business practices. What they do is most certainly unethical, and I suspect it is also illegal. Here is a list of thing I have experience with M&T:

1- Holding payments to charge late fees. 2- They do not apply all payments to interest, escrow and principal. They keep in "unapplied funds" account. They have all types of excuses and explanations; such as "the money is with the previous servicer, we need a cushion, I don't see it, let me research it and find out", etc. 3- They manipulate the escrow account by charging much more than they should, by changing the amount every month, and by applying less to principal and more to escrow, or more to interest than less escrow, and then saying there is a deficiency. The breakdown of the payment is not done correctly, but it is always for their benefit. 4- If they decide they want to sell your house to the highest bidder, in an auction, they will do it, even if you are current on your payment. Even if they don't succeed, M&T will charge you foreclosure costs for whatever amount they wish. In my case it was thousands of dollars.

5- If you have a trial period they will not apply that money to principal, escrow, etc. They will just keep it. They say they will do it later, but they will have an excuse for not applying the payments latter. 6- A loan modification will end up increasing your monthly payment and your outstanding balance by thousands and thousands of dollars. If you really want to do it, do it with a lawyer. But then what you will spend with a lawyer might not be worth it financially. 7- The reason they don't want to do a short sale is because they make more money foreclosing. If they sell for less than what you own them, they get the difference from the FDIC. 8- Remember, they bought your loan with up to 65% discount, but you are paying interest on the original amount. They have plenty of opportunity to treat their customer considering the customer financial health. But instead, their business practices are a type of sophisticated theft. 9- They constantly threaten you with foreclosure. Either you pay what they ask, sign what they want you to sign, or they will take your house to auction. 10- There is no win-win negotiation with them. It is they win big; you lose big.

I am filing a complaint with FDIC, and I think everyone who is being deceived and defrauded by M&T should do the same.

Starting a couple of years ago, M&T started to screw around with our escrow account. They were saying that we were not paying enough, and jacking it up even though insurance and property taxes were not increasing. So we paid.

Last year, they decided that we needed to have another six month cushion to the escrow account, in addition to the 12 months they were already collecting for ahead of time. No reason, just because the new banking regulations under Frank-Dodd apparently let them. Of course, they keep the interest on the escrow accounts. We had to give them an additional $6,000 last year, just for them to hold in the reserve on the reserve.

Then late last year they charged an extra $200 to our mortgage/escrow payment, without any advance notice, and without explanation. Our mortgage/escrow payment, over $10,000 a month, was rejected and set aside in a special side account they established. And then we were sent letters about non-payment of the mortgage, late fees, and penalties even though we sent them the additional $200. No one at M&T that we talked to had any explanation for the additional $200 they said we owed without notice. Massive late fees that they later rescinded after they had more than $22,000 of our money in their side account.

We just did a refi to get away from M&T. They were not interested in a refi, but our new bank gives us almost half the interest rate, and great customer service. But M&T charged us almost 2% as an early pre-payment penalty even though all the pre-payment penalties were supposed to end 3 years ago. We paid just to get away from them.

We are intending to report them next week - once we have the paperwork in order - to the State Atty General of New York (They are out of Buffalo) and to the Federal Reserve Bank of NY, which is supposed to be their overseer. And yes, our loan was originally with Bayview, who sold it to MT Bank. I would go back to work digging ditches rather than finance my business through M&T again.

Like many others we were sold to M&T by BOA. The same month we transfer was the month we started our trial period for a loan modification, Aug 2013. We've made all our payments on time and after months of calling and checking to get update on the status of the modification, we finally received a packet April 12, 2014 for a Partial Claim. A Partial Claim that they put together for us for a ridiculous amount of $49,442.50, stating that it's for 15 months of missed payment. Our monthly payment (principal, interest, taxes, and ins. together) when default was $1,403.42. They wanted the packet signed, notarized, and return within a week's time.

When I called to question amount of missed months and the dollar amount of the claim, I was told that it was actually for 21 months, from Aug 2012 to Oct 2013. I told her that was only 14 months. She then told me she didn't know that's all she can see on our account. I requested a breakdown, and was inform that it won't be available for 3 to 4 days. Then I asked if the deadline can be extended until after I review breakdown, she said "No". Her solution is for us to sign, notarize, and return packet, and if there was a mistake, then they will fix later. I told her I was not going to do that. She told me that was my only option.

I've had since read up on Partial Claims and it states that lenders cannot ask for more than 12 months' worth of payment and late fees cannot be added. I have no idea how they came to that amount. There would be no way I could do a one-time lump sum payment for that amount. If I could I wouldn't be needing a loan modification. I will be contacting HUD and perhaps FHA to see if this is legal. If there is a class action suit on M&T, I would like to sign up also. They are definitely doing something screwy over there.

They said I had a "shortage" and they hadn't transferred my homestead exemption - so my escrow amounts were too high. Faxed cancellation of my escrow account and was told it would take 10 bus. days - after 10 bus. days, they are now saying 24 bus. days. I looked up my state tax code. According to my state, they cannot take out any more than is due as estimated from your previous year (varies from state to state - check your tax laws).

So many of the same problems others have had, I also had. From taking almost a year to get "denied" a short sale, every time I would call I would get different answers and advice, having to submit paperwork several times, not being able to get through to my "dedicated homeowner assistance specialist", and the list goes on and on. The only time I ever got anyone to respond was if I sent a customer feedback email - complaining. I would NEVER choose this bank and would like anyone who reads this to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, use social media to express your feelings, and let M&T know how you feel by sending a message on their website.

HomeFreeUSA tried to help but said these were the most unaccommodating people they ever tried to work with. I had to file for a Chapter 13 bankruptcy. I believe this has been attempt to defraud me of monies they are not owed. I have made a complaint to the FBI about this, and as I cannot contact M&T Bank on a Saturday, I will have to wait until Monday to call them and attempt to clear this up once again. They initially claimed they had attempted to contact my Insurance provider on multiple occasions, however this was denied by my Insurance Agent. Three months later and M&T Bank informed me that they would have to increase my mortgage payment 50.00 extra every month since my previous lender did not charge me enough for my PMI insurance. On August 2014, they increased my payments an extra 50.00 a month claiming that I was experiencing an escrow shortage. I made all the necessary payments as requested to restore the money in my escrow. On January 2014, they increased my mortgage payment an additional 100.00/mo claiming I was experiencing another shortage. Surprisingly, I found out that I was being overcharged for taxes.

I informed M&T Bank about the situation and they asked for a copy of my assessment notice. I faxed it over and in the meantime I asked for my mortgage payment to be lowered. M&T Bank refused to lower my payment and they insisted that they never received any of the documentation that I faxed over. I faxed the documentation again as requested and call the customer service line and a rude female by the name of Kathy finally told me that they she cannot tell if M&T Bank receives their faxes. I ask to be transferred and she refused to do so.

I have informed M&T Bank about the mistake that was made with my taxes and they drag their feet so they can continue to make an extra $156.00 off of me every month while I wait on them to resolve the problem. I will tell anyone that M&T Bank does not care about anything but making money. I'm concerned that some sort of fraud may be occurring... M&T purchased my mortgage from Bank of America. Around Dec of 2012, I refinanced to a lower interest rate. At the time, the closing had to occur 4 separate times, due to M&T making error after error on the closing documents. Once signed the bank would respond that something was wrong, had to repeat process ... total of 4 times.

Since the refinance occurred, even though there is a 10 day grace period in which to pay the mortgage without penalty, if payment is not received on 1st day due M&T begins series of aggressive phone calls wanting payment immediately. In mid-2013 received notice that property taxes had not been paid by bank. Forward information to bank and heard nothing more, so assumed payment was made. In Dec 2013 received check for over $6K from M&T Bank telling me I had an overage in my escrow account. At end of Dec 2013 received notice from M&T Bank that escrow was in shortage and monthly payment was going up by $300 per month effective Jan 2014.

Meanwhile made initial payment (not including additional $300) and received notice mid-Jan 2014 that mortgage payment had not been received and that funds I did send were 'unapplied'. I called bank, stated I did not want mortgage payment to go up and authorized electronic payment of over $3K to be placed in escrow so that payment would not go up.

Noticed at end of Jan 2014 $3K authorized had not been taken. Called back - determined they had written down 1 wrong digit in account number (they had not bothered to contact me again). Corrected information with them and ask that electronic payment be made - and was told that now I only owed approx $2,600 and that if I made this electronic payment all would be set, mortgage would remain the same, etc.

After making Feb 2014 payment, received notice again that there were unapplied funds, there was a shortage, etc. Called again and was told that they were wrong in telling me that $2,600 was owed, that I owed more, otherwise payment would still increase, but by about $120 per month. I asked them why they sent me a check over $6K and then there was a shortage and they couldn't see anything about sending me a check. Said perhaps that was from the previous mortgage I had before refinance - but that all that information had been purged from system.

Left it as it was so that no further issues would occur and also filed complaint with Consumerfinance.gov as I suspect something isn't right. Wanted explanation as to 'why' closing papers had to be signed 4 times - asked if final closing papers are correct and valid - asked 'why' check was sent and then shortage occurred - why different folks give different information, why it can't be corrected, etc.

M&T responded to complaint and never acknowledged my question regarding the multiple closings that occurred. They did admit that it was their error in the paperwork and that they did not collect any escrow funds at that closing - and stated the 6K returned was from prior mortgage... Thus they admitted that they held $6K of my money for over a year in 'some account' ~ never notified me of it, etc. Why was money held over a year - and where was it held. M&T Bank never answered any questions as to why all the confusion when I've called and tried to correct things and still they say: 1) I owe more money for the escrow and 2) Mortgage payment is still going up to yet a 3rd figure now quoted.

It appears to me that while I can (and have) filed a complaint via Consumerfinance.gov - other than logging the complaint and disputing the response from M&T Bank - I can expect no additional response/help/action from them. It appears my only recourse is to retain my own attorney. In looking online and doing searches via Google regarding M&T Bank Mortgage Issue it appears many individuals who originally had their mortgages with Bank of America and were sold to M&T Bank are also experiencing various problems and issues. It just appears to me that something isn't right with the accounting, records, practices at M&T Bank and makes me question possible fraud and/or possible internal kickbacks. To me, it appears that something 'not right' is happening at M&T Bank.

I submitted my paperwork to them in October 2013 and didn't get a response from them until January 2, 2014. The initial response was about a loan modification which I was not even interested in and had mentioned to them repeatedly! They then made me wait 30 days so now it's Feb 2, four months after I started this whole thing and no closer to a short sale. They then advised me that I would have to resubmit ALL my paperwork over again because it's 90 days old!!!

After the initial experience of dealing with them, I have decided it's not worth the time or energy to keep trying. So today I called to tell them I would not pursue a short sale, that I was going to let it go to foreclosure and the rep I was talking to hung up on me! I have had countless phone calls with them over the last four months and every time my Realtor or I spoke to them, we would get a different answer than the time before, even if the calls were made on the same day! The mortgage payment was at least 90% of my monthly take home pay. Instead of declaring bankruptcy at the time, I took out the loan instead. I struggled to make payments but obviously was over my head. I live in an area where employment opportunities are scarce and have been unable to secure a better paying job. My ex made 6 figures and I was left with an income of $35,000 a year.

I have been trying to negotiate with M&T for a permanent loan mod or principal reduction. I was given a step mod and was able to make the initial payments but eventually was right back to the original sum. They have taken all my equity for late fees which bumped my principal even higher. They allow you to file for mods again and again because they have no intention of negotiating. They simply let the payments pile up until they are impossible to repay. They do not participate in HAMP, HARP, or any other program to help people whose mortgages are underwater. Furthermore, I will not get a chance at a short sale because I have three liens against my house that were never discharged at my bankruptcy hearing. These liens were placed by attorneys representing Midland Funding. This debt collection agency buys debt from banks and are notorious for unfair practices. I am currently represented by legal aid but they do not hold out much hope for a short sale due to the liens on the property. I may soon be without the home I have lived in for nearly 24 years.

In August, Bank of America sold my mortgage to M&T Bank. My payment went up when it was transferred and I wasn't sure why. I called this bank several times for information about my account. I have been transferred to many representatives trying to resolve issues. Messages have been left, but none of them have been returned. When speaking with representatives, they do not know what they are talking about. Recently, I was notified that I missed my October payment, and again I contacted M&T to see what was happening. The letter also indicated that they notified the Credit Bureaus. The payment was withdrawn from my bank in Texas and sure enough M&T notified the credit bureaus.

When talking with several representatives about this, I received the run around and absolutely no apology. In fact, there has been arguments as to whether or not they notified the bureaus. They say that they haven't. It's funny when I can tell them everything about this negative reporting to two of the bureaus which they deny reporting anything to. This bank is horrible. They absolutely know nothing about customer service and have so a careless and apathetic attitude when dealing with their mistakes. I totally hate this bank and I never wanted to do business with them in the first place.

My Mortgage was purchased by this bank, without consulting me and they suck! They did an "Escrow Analysis" and jacked my mortgage up by nearing $100 a month, because they require a cushion. I get a refund from my escrow account, every single year, as it is and they want to charge me MORE! Of course they promise to refund it next year, if they don't use it. In the meantime, I am screwed, every month, for the next year. Their customer service operators are clueless. I was put on hold, 5 times, so that he could apparently ask someone else each one of my questions. This bank is a joke!

I was forced to do business with this horrible bank when my loan was transferred to M&T from Bank of America. I was current on my loan, but was on a tied budget, so I asked for a loan modification. M&T then told me an "agent" would work on a loan modification (It was a lie). Usually Banks who want foreclosure properties advise customers seeking loan modifications, to stop the payments, so they can take your house, sell it, or they can charge thousands of dollars in foreclosure costs.

In my case, M&T simply stopped drawing on funds from the automatic transfer. When I realized what was happening, I sent a check to M&T. They returned the check and said that now I had to deal only with their "agent". Their agent, Bayview Loan Service, is an even more fraudulent company. They wanted to charge me $4,000 cash plus $2,000 a month (doubling my montly payment for six months), or they would send my account to foreclosure. The total amount due was only $2,000 and it was M&T's fault.

Note that this was supposed to be a loan modification! I refused to go with their EXTORTION, this exorbitant amount. The very SAME day, they did just that. I got a letter from the "trustee" asking for $17,000 or they would sell my house. Can you believe that? I filed a complain with the Federal Trade Commission and after one agonizing year of sending documents more than 10 times, they gave me a loan modification decreasing my interest rate by 1 point. But they just had another trap on the corner.

M&T/Bayview had added thousands of dollars to my principal in foreclosure costs and payments for months that actually had paid. No, not late fees, but to pay the same month AGAIN. I have sent them the proof of payments I made, but they ignore. So what the loan modification did? Ruined my credit and increased my principal.

But this is not all. Even though I am current in my mortgage, my credit report says I am in default. The fact that M&T has the most rude customer service I have ever dealt with is only a small detail compared to their criminal behavior.

M and T is a horrible bank and not a bank for poor people. They price gouge customers with their fees. I can never get ahead with this bank because of the overdraft fees. If you overdraft, you get overdraft fees and if you don't get paid weekly, you get another fee (to be frank 5 days after the first overdraft). I don't know how M and T can continue to do this to customers. One day when I don't have to worry about every penny, I will not bank with M and T. M and T Bank partnered with a community partner to provide people with security deposits in which they would have to pay back. This is the only reason I wanted to expand my business with them. I thought, Wow, what a good company to help people when they need the help. I was wrong. I struggle with being grateful and disgusted with the same company. After my direct deposit comes through, I'm through banking with this company and once I pay off my security deposit loan, I won't look back.

They received my payment on the 18th of Aug. and charged me a $40 late fee when it wasn't late till the 20th. The reason being is that it was after 2 pm that the mail was opened. How is that even legal? Right in their letter, they say they received the check on the 18th. If I could find a few more people and a lawyer, I think we have an easy class action lawsuit...

Recently, my mortgage from Bank of America was sold to M&T Bank. I set up automatic biweekly of half payment for my mortgage to come out my account. M&T Bank took entire payment which cause my account to be overdraft in the amount of 200.00. The employees at M&T Bank was unprofessional, rude, and uneducated in the banking field. They were very nonchalant about resolving overdrawn account and refunding my half of mortgage. To this day my account still remains in negative eight hundred dollars. I'm seeking legal action for my money and for pain suffering. Looking to see do anyone else would like to start law class action suit against M&T Bank. They need to be out business ASAP.

As others point out, M&T Bank wants $10 for M&T Bank out of the proceeds of each cashed check. In other words, if you hire a babysitter, write them a check for $20, M&T wants $10, and the babysitter gets half. Therefore, checks written on M&T are not suitable to be presented at M&T Bank. They suggest anyone with a check written on M&T not visit their bank, but instead see if some other bank will give the cash, then have this other bank negotiate with M&T to see if M&T will pay. The policy is, at a minimum, rude. The effect of this policy is that M&T makes enemies of potential customers, and will not serve them.

This M&T policy may or may not be legal or ethical; hard to say if it is within the law and/or bank regulations. Regardless, the effect is that checks written on M&T are not negotiable at M&T Bank. Therefore, anyone possibly getting a check written on M&T would be advised not to accept it. Potential or current account holders at M&T should be aware that checks written on M&T are not valuable to those who receive them. The consequence was wasted time, as M&T refused to perform basic banking service.

My mortgage was sold to M&T Bank in July of 2013. I have never seen a bank that makes it so difficult to make a payment. It seems they make it difficult to raise more late fees and interest. You can't pay on their website unless you open a checking account with them. It seems you can only pay your mortgage from their account. So now you have to transfer money from the checking account you actually use to a checking account to just to pay your mortgage. If you go back in time and decide to mail a check, Good luck. This gives them every opportunity to say they did not get the check in time to not charge a fee and add on interest charges. I finally took advantage of the online bill pay service that my bank offers to send a mortgage payment. My bank removes the funds from my account and transfers the payment to M&T directly. My bank informs me they will receive the payment in one business day. I hope using this service from Chase Bank keeps from having to have anything to do with M&T Bank.

Bank of America sold my loan to M&T bank. My payment was due on August 1st. M&T bank did not submit a statement until August 19th, which I received on August 27th. I have tried every day to make contact with this company to pay my bill or set up an account online. Every day it is something different; after hours (yes, for online registration and for automated phone service), I have yet to get a person on the phone, technical difficulties with automated phone and online registration.

August 30th, I finally get my account set up to pay online and they only allow current card-holding customers to pay online (which I am not a card holding customer). I have never found a company of any kind that it was impossible to pay a bill. At this point, I am afraid to mail a check. I honestly don't know what to do...All I want to do is pay my freaking mortgage!!!!!!!!!!!!

My home loan was transferred from Bank of America (which was fabulous) to M&T and now I have to sit on hold forever (45 minutes) to be told I need to speak with someone else and get transferred to be on hold again. The agents seem nice enough and willing to help once you finally get through to them. I can’t set up payment online because apparently the website I have for them is only for people who have bank accounts there, I don’t and wont! I just want to pay my mortgage! I called for help getting the online payments set up and even though they are open 8-11 M-Sat they were closed. I assumed they were open 8am-11 pm...Perhaps they are the only business on earth that can function with be open 3 whole hours a day? Ridiculous company! And if you want to pay on the phone you have to do that through Western Union. Thanks but no. GRRRRR!

My Mortgage Loan was transferred to M & T Bank for August 2013. I am already not happy with the service they are providing. Your Welcome Package gives a number to call that is no longer in service, a web address that doesn't exist, and once you finally locate a number to call, you are told to call a different number. Call another number and sit on hold for over an hour to speak to someone to try to resolve the issues and questions to begin with. I give up and hung up. As of right now, I do not believe I am going to enjoy doing business with them!

I went to M&T to cash a check. To my surprise, they charge you. It's hard to believe that in this day and age, a bank would be that dirty. How do you charge people to honor your own check. A hefty $10 fee for not having an account . I am a contractor. Let's just say they have just put their clients in a bad position trying to get work done from me and anyone I know. I cash checks at my customers banks for the simple reason, if it bounces I don't have to pay the fees. From this day on, all M&T customers will have to pay cash. If you bank with M&T, do me a favor. Call someone else or have cash on hand.
