They have worst customer service. Bankers are liars and some fart name "Bill **" that if you a fraud he will try scaring you. Do not deal with them. Banks are thieves!! Also BB&T. Bank of Amercrap. Hsbc. All of them got caught via scam. Stealing from customers and cheating on fees. Whoever don’t give great service should go bankrupt!

This bank is in my neighborhood to service the community. However the customer service is the worst I have ever experienced anywhere. Usually only one teller works at this bank. She is always polite and helpful but one teller clearly is not enough. Today at 10:15am three people sat behind the glass, two kept their heads down impersonating tellers only one assisted customers. The manager Ms. ** was impersonator number one, she allowed impersonator number two to do nothing but sit with her head down. If you guessed this occurred in a small town you would be wrong. This M and T bank branch is located on Alabama avenue in Washington D.C. You would be incorrect yet again if you guessed that today's service was an anomaly. This pitiful service occurs whenever I frequent this branch. Retention department can you help?

I have applied twice for a home modification loan with M&T Bank. Both times I was turned down. I am stuck on a 5 year ARM loan. I am 100% disabled and cannot work due to my health. They know my health situation and refuse to help me. I broke my neck, I have had ten Heart Attacks, Barrett's esophagus disease and three strokes. This bank is going to put me out in the streets where I will not survive. I think this is discrimination against the disabled. I need help and M&T Bank refuses to help a 56 year old disabled man, this is not right. Shame on them.

I applied for the M&T Bank Visa card with zero interest. Got approved. Have great credit. The card has an offer of 100 dollars reward if you spend 500 dollars over first 90 days. I spent 2500 dollars. They never sent me a bill. They keep mailing overdue letters. No other choice but to call them. THIS is where it gets tricky. I have called several times. I use the customer number in back of the card. When you call you speak to the bank, the mortgage people, everybody except anyone from the credit card.
Finally you get someone on the after spending HOURS with them on hold. I ask about my reward points. They tell me I have to call somebody else - another phone number and they keep you on hold. Then when you ask to make a payment they transfer you. Put you on hold again then hang up. This garbage of company does not want to get paid so they could scam you out of reward points and take away your zero interest. Stay the hell away from this Bank.

I have been a long time customer of M&T Bank both Personal and for our Business. Today I pulled up to the ATM Machine and it said "Unable to print receipts, would you like to proceed?" First of all why didn't they do their jobs and refill it with paper? I proceeded since I was only making a deposit and was going to take a pic of the screen to show the transaction. I put in 2 checks, one being spit out, the other one being ate by the machine.
I went inside and the teller told me they can't give me my check back. I would have to file paperwork in order to do so. Then they would not take my other check for deposit after I have had done business there as a business account for well over a decade. They know me as I have dealt with them in the past for other services. The teller referred me to a manager in the back who offered no remedy to my situation. I walked out with him saying, "Do you want my business card?" I looked back and said, "For what? You just lost a lot of future business." M&T Bank shame on you. I am glad I closed my business checking and savings account there, and soon to close my personal checking.

I have a loan through M&T, not by choice, but when I purchased my car M&T is who I got. I have had an excellent credit history since opening my first credit card 10 years ago and M&T has completely screwed me. First, let's just say their online system is not user-friendly. Since M&T took over as my new loan provider for my car in April of 2017, I have made consistent, sometimes even more than expected, payments faithfully to M&T. In August and September of 2018 after logging in to submit my monthly payments, their auto-generated Amount Due and Due Date had been lower than my normal monthly payment by $75.00. I did not think anything other than maybe my payments dropped these two months because I was paying off more on my monthly installments in the previous months.
Could I have called to inquire about it? Absolutely. But in all the years of managing my credit and when receiving notice whether it be paper or online, I have never had an issue or glitch in a system with the amount displayed to me to notify me of my monthly payment and due date. At the end of September, I received a letter in the mail that my account was behind $75.00. I immediately called M&T and spoke to a gentleman (who like many others in their customer service department was rude and unpleasant to deal with) notified me that I should be paying my monthly installments regardless of what their system says to avoid any missed payments or late charges.
Since that day, I made sure I paid more on my monthly installments. It wasn't until again in December that I received another notice via mail that my account was behind $277. I was baffled and confused and again immediately called M&T to find out how I am behind $277 when I have made consistent monthly payments and more than is due. This was "because of my late fees and August's missed payment of $75.00." I explained that I had spoke to someone in September when I received my only notice via mail that I was behind and what our conversation was, which is what I followed moving forward, but was never told I was behind any more than what I immediately paid ($75.00). I check my credit often and saw that I had a derogatory mark on my credit regarding a missed payment.
I looked into it further and found that M&T had submitted my information for missed payments in October & November!!! I disputed it but nothing changed and I was directed to first contact the company directly followed by adding a 100-word letter to my credit as well as file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. I followed the instructions and first contacted the Credit Department of M&T yesterday. I received a call today that they cannot help me nor submit anything to the credit bureau to help correct this huge mistake that is now on my credit for the next 7 years. I was told unless I can show a screenshot of the system that showed my amount due was $306 in August and September, there is nothing they can do. They expect me to step into a time machine (that doesn't exist) and go back and take a picture of a screen (which is impossible) to prove my word.
If they record all of their calls like that notify you of before you even get to speak, they would be able to hear the same thing I said to their rep and his rebuttal back in September and again in December! Had I known this would happen, I would have protected myself by taking a screenshot as support for when they tried to screw me. After this experience, I started to read other people's reviews and I wish I would have done so a long time ago before I got to this point. I would not recommend M&T to anyone for any reason and forget being an honest, compliant human being because they do absolutely nothing to help you. I will continue to fight this and strongly encourage anyone who currently holds loans with M&T to start looking into getting it switched over with someone else.

I’ve had this account for 2 months and I’m already closing it out. After depositing my own money into the bank it was put on hold for 5 days and after it was lifted I took a picture of my check to deposit to make it easier and they still have my check on hold for now 9 days! And all I get is, "Oh there’s nothing we can do." It wasn’t a problem when I was depositing money but now nobody can help when it’s time to take out? Definitely the worst bank I have ever been with. I would rather go back to Chase Bank. Customer service representatives are distasteful and rude. DO NOT BANK HERE.

I normally do not write any reviews but the experience with this bank has been so pathetic that I was forced to write it. The online banking system is a joke. They keep blocking the transfers with no reason and say it's for security and have no clue when it's going to be fixed. The customer service is a joke too with average waiting time of 45 min to get to them to just hear that there is nothing they can do about a problem.

This began in May they have yet to help as they said but instead won’t let me pay and now are trying to take my home. Everything they ask me I do and then they say they need more. I realized they simply have been playing me and had no intention of helping. Now I need help away from them. They are seriously trying to foreclose on my home. I don’t know what to do because they have lied and placed me in a awful situation. DO NOT have anything to do with this bank. It is awful, unprofessional, and a scam. I have been in tears dealing with them regularly. Please - anyone that has advice let me know. Please!

Our mortgage was bought out by this bank, and I use the term bank sarcastically. My husband paid the mortgage on a Friday morning. We were coming up to a Bank Holiday on Monday so we assumed it wouldn't post until Tuesday. Upon review the payment did not post until Wednesday. When we called to verify the payment was received electronically as it stated the representative stated that the account showed an outstanding balance and NO PAYMENT.
Upon speaking with a manager, I explained our checking showed a withdraw by the mortgage company was completed. So where is my 1600??? Manager says he doesn't know and it's not his problem if he can't see it! Apparently you only need to be a half wit with no education or customer service skills to be employed by this sorry excuse for a mortgage lender... This is nothing short of FRAUD. I'll be turning them into every state agency I can dig up. SAVE YOURSELF. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE THIEVES!

My mortgage was sold to M&T last year, I did not choose them and never would. I've had nothing but problems since. From rude employees who have literally no idea what they're doing, cannot answer basic questions on what fees I'm being charged, will never let me speak to a supervisor etc. They're telling me my mortgage is delinquent but WILL NOT LET ME PAY. You read that right. They've locked me out of my online account. They've locked me out of the phone pay. They won't take a by phone payment with a rep. I've paid in full TWICE NOW and they returned the funds to my checking account, the same checking account I've always used to pay, and locked me out of everything.
They say I cannot drive the 9 hours to the nearest branch to pay. They won't give me the correct information to send a bill pay from my bank. They made me have my bank fax TWO LETTERS stating I have an open account, again from the account I have always used to pay, and told me that NAVY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION IS A SMALL FINANCIAL INSTITUTION AND WON'T ACCEPT PAYMENT DRAFTS. Reality check, they're a major bank and have far higher ratings and standards than M&T. Look it up. They keep making me call NFCU to "look out for the payment" nonstop runaround. My home was destroyed by Hurricane Florence, and every single person who I speak to has no idea. They ask why the home is vacant and not secured. BECAUSE IT NO LONGER EXISTS, HELLO.
Read. The. Notes. So they keep calling demanding payment and threatening foreclosure but won't take my money. I have every single cent. I take tons of screenshots to show where I've submitted the payments, where it was taken from my bank, returned, of the letters and emails, the fees, etc. I will report them to every single agency I can find. This company is trash. I've never missed a payment, EVER. Yet I can't get ANY actual help from ANYONE. TELL ME M&T, WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO PAY YOU? This is mortgage number 4 for me, and I have never had issues. Ever. I can't wait to get away from them. Please, do NOT use them.

When I opened my checking account, I stated expressly that absolutely no USPS mail from the bank was to be directed to my residential address (which I had to provide as a condition of obtaining services). I explained that because I am in the process of escaping a domestic abuse situation that involves financial abuse (and this is commonplace in domestic abuse), any mail from the bank could fall in to the hands of my abuser, who, then realizing that I now have funds at M&T, would attempt to secure these somehow and/or commit physical harm against me for beginning the process of separation/escape.
After receiving assurances that all I need to do is "go paperless," I "went paperless," and expected to be safe in opening this new account. Within two weeks or so, not fewer than THREE separate mailings boldly labeled from M&T arrived at my residence for me, and on each occasion, my abuser opened the item before it reached me, and interrogated me regarding its meaning.
After the second arrived, I asked my banking representative to correct the situation, and while she did her best, that third item, which, ironically CONFIRMED that I had ordered a stop on mail to my residence, still arrived. The personal safety of its customers does not seem to matter to M&T bank -- at least not enough for it to give a damn about doing things right when it comes to privacy protections specifically requested by an endangered customer. I would suggest that women, in particular, avoid M&T, and find a bank that actually has a clue about the scourge of domestic abuse/violence that is destroying massive numbers of women's lives daily.

This is the worst experience I have ever had with ANY company ever! Since the moment they purchased my mortgage loan in September I have had nothing but problems. It started with threats about not having homeowner's insurance and then not having flood insurance AND THEN it was not adequate coverage. I had to call weekly to correct these issues, as my insurance company sent proof of insurance several times. Additionally, I was provided several "analysis" and each was incorrect. Including one in which they sent me a $1390 check and stated I overpaid last year.
I called to ensure this was correct (2x) and was reassured that the only information missing was my flood insurance and that I should keep that specific amount to pay back into escrow. Later I noticed the flood insurance payment I had made (a week or so later) was refunded because M&T sent a check to them, even though I was told they were not doing this and that I needed to pay them myself. They also said they would make sure my flood insurance for next year was added back to escrow. (All of this during another phone call because I received ANOTHER letter stating I didn't have coverage).
After this was paid we decided to use the rest of the amount to pay off medical bills we accrued from the birth of our son in April, 2018. This was SUCH a relief until I received another analysis stating that we owed our escrow account $1771 and change and that our payment would now be nearly $1500 per month. Mind you it was $1189.00 before this and was 1296.00 before they did their first analysis. The company refused to acknowledge their mistakes or assist us in any way. They said I could pay it all back and our payment would remain the same...because we just have $1800 laying around for their screw up.
Furthermore, I paid back the flood insurance amount and added additional payment to reduce the amount we owed to escrow... And I was told this would make our payment lower. Well, guess what!! I received another analysis and the amount owed was $10 cheaper... They "didn't know my taxes went up." This is incorrect, as I told the last person I spoke with that I understood my taxes increased and I was happy to pay the additional for that. (They also made me increase insurance coverage by $83 previously).
When I called about this issue, the first women I spoke with had NO IDEA what she was talking about and I had to correct her. She was reading the entirely wrong information...(another call that I was told incorrect information). Eventually I ended up speaking with a "manager" who I had spoke with previously and he is going to extend the owed amount past 12 months so that our payment does not increase significantly... So basically doing NOTHING to fix their mistake. Mind you they told me to write a letter asking for this to be done and I refused and told them they need to handle it, that I would not be doing anything additional to fix their mess! The ONLY reason I remotely agreed to this is because I am going to refinance elsewhere, I have already left a message for my attorney, and I am also filing a complaint with the attorney general.
My fiance and I are hardworking, college educated, professional individuals... We are never looking for a handout and would never have owed escrow if it wasn't for M&T's continuous incompetence... It is unfortunate that this company does not care about the financial impact they have caused a young firefighter and his family. Shame on you M&T!!

As of December I still owe 108K on the principal. I wanted to get the interest earned for year 2016 and 2017. Each time the automated prompts would eventually hang up on me. Call the general 800-724-2440 number and after a long hold time I got someone whom didn't know what they were doing (Gloria). I'm going to refinance with a different bank. You are a very bad company. This bank will not let you pay extra on your principal. When you pay extra money they will put that payment where you don’t have a payment the next month but if you don’t pay extra then your interest for next month is added each day you don’t pay extra money so when you do pay all your payment goes to interest. I’m 3 months ahead but they won’t automatically withdraw because they say you're ahead of payments. They also do not post your account notice until 12 or so days after it’s due. Bad bank. Someone other than me needs to make a complaint to the feds.

I have no choice, but to have my mortgage under M&T Bank. My mortgage was sold three times within the first year of having it. I'm now stuck doing business with M&T Bank. My problem with M&T Bank is they don't accept payments for your mortgage on the weekends. Why is it, any other bank or online bill collect. You can post your payment on the weekend, but not with M&T Bank. I have loans out for auto, new windows, and having a basement finished. All of those I can post a payment on a Saturday or Sunday even if the banks not processing the payment until Monday, but not with M&T Bank. You can only post your payment during Monday through Friday and it even has to be posted by 5:00 pm to be posted on the same day. This is just another reason why the banks makes the rules, get bailed out when they make bad business decisions and we have to take it if we want a house or buy anything.

I had no choice in dealing with M&T Bank, since my mortgage was sold to them at closing. In the first few years dealing with them, I had no issues. I went through a Chapter 13 bankruptcy which has been discharged for a year. I have made all my payments on time for the last 14 years, including during bankruptcy. In the past week, M&T Bank has called my home a minimum of 3 times a day, including Saturday. I called them 4 days ago to ask why they're constantly calling me. The rep told me "it's as a courtesy once you're within the grace period and haven't yet made your payment" (payment due on the 1st, grace until the 16th). So then how is this a grace period if you are now calling me multiple times a day, every day? All he could ask was if I was going to make my payment by the 16th.
I told him they will have their payment by the close of business on the 16th. He said "ok, I'll put in a "promise to pay" and the calls will stop". But guess what? The calls haven't stopped. My husband told a rep earlier today that he wanted to put her on a 3 way call with our lawyer, she said she doesn't wait around for that. When he asked her name & ID number, she hung up. This is now harassment. I am well within my grace period. I have NEVER been late on a payment. And, to top it all off, when they call, caller ID shows up as "AMENDTE Bank" with their 800 number, not "M&T bank" like in the past. I don't understand how they get away with the things they do. If I had the chance, I would get rid of them as my mortgage company. Thank goodness I never opened a bank account with them.

I made a call to customer service just recently because I was in an emergency situation and needed to have funds transferred from my savings to my checking which was linked to my debit card. Web banking system was down so I called into customer service to have it done over the phone. I went thru two reps who refused to make the transfer even though their systems were down because they needed the last 4 digits of my account number and I could only remember the last 3.
Every other security question they asked such as my name on the accounts, ss# etc, etc was fine. BUT because I could only give them 3 of the last four digits on my accts which I did not have access to because it was late in the evening, banks were closed and I was stranded and needed money for a tow they couldn't help me. This was the worst, most ridiculous customer service experience I have ever had. Even after explaining the situation no empathy what so ever. "I can't help you any further, goodbye." So frustrating.

This bank will charge you $38 automatically instead of blocking charges to your debit card when your fund is inadequate. Even when the charge is for less than $6. And when you don't fund it within 7 days, they will continue to charge you $38. Instead of blocking charges to your debit card when you have inadequate fund, they will still process the transaction because they will bill you $38. They will tell you that you automatically enrolled to auto debit, and that's a lie. But that's how they harass their consumers. Please do not use this UNSCRUPULOUS BANK. I have been banking with M&T Bank for 6 years. And in that time, I have had nothing but negative experiences with them. Their ATMs are out of service more often than not. They will find any excuse to charge you insufficient fund fees or other fees that they dream up (which they love to stack as many times as they can if you make one small slip up). If you do your math incorrectly and overdraft your account by as much as 1 cent, but the total transaction amount was $5 or more they charge $38.50. So you may be thinking "Ok, I will simply double check my account before and after I make my transaction to ensure everything is correct". Well chances are excellent that their mobile banking will be down.
And if you try to call they will tell you "we are experiencing technical difficulties, try calling tomorrow." So you decide ok, I need to pay this bill today, I will simply double check tomorrow to make sure everything is "ok." Tomorrow comes and you see that you are overdrawn due to 1 transaction (the one you completed the night prior)... "No big deal, I will go out of my way to run to the bank and make a deposit." You get there and wouldn't you know it, their ATM is broken... So you go inside and they inform you that it would take an extra 24 hours for your deposit to take effect. They hit you with $38.50 so now your account is negative -$38.51. You make the deposit with the teller and the next two days later, everything is normal, your account is back in the positive.
A day or so later, you stop for lunch and pay with your debit card. You go to check your account before making the transaction and you notice that they have charged you a SECOND fee of $38.50. You have no idea what that is from so you call the customer service only to be told that there was an automatic transaction that was not listed in their system as "Pending" because evidently they don't list ALL transactions going through the account. You explain the situation and are told "we cannot reverse the insufficient fund charge because neither of them are our fault." Easily the most unreliable and shifty bank service I have ever used. If I could rate in negative stars I would.

Nearing 4 months after submitting an approved disabled property tax exemption to M&T from my county assessor’s office and M&T is still taking too much out for my escrow account, $4019 too much. My county has applied the overpayment from the first bi-annual tax installment to my annual tax liability leaving me with zero owing for the remainder of the year, yet M&T continues to take the incorrect amount out each month. I’ve spoken with many, many people in both the Tax department and the Customer service department who blow me off and bounce me back and forth, no one is willing to take responsibility. When I finally get supervisors, they assure me they will personally watch the account…and that’s when it all ends.
The big cop-out is that ‘we need to run an escrow analysis” which they have already done once (without updating the account with the new property tax amount first) when they stated on another call that it needed to be run again, they failed to run it. I called back 2 weeks later and was told yet again, they needed to run an analysis, that it had yet to be run the second time and this is now the third request. Calling again today while I write this and being told again, 5-7 days to run an escrow analysis.
The Tax Department is failing to update my record with the information provided from my county assessor so the customer service department can run the analysis because they only see old data. They admit they see the error but cannot fix it until the tax department updates the load acct with the correct data...broken record every time I call.
Tax department sees the new info, they can rattle off the correct numbers to me on the phone but whatever button needs to be pushed to update the actual account so that all departments see the same thing is not being pushed. This time the supervisor (of the day), Jeremy, assures me (just like the last guy did) he will personally track this to make sure it gets taken care of. In the meantime, he said that I once again will be charged too much on my monthly payments until it’s resolved. I asked for $160 at the ATM. As yet again I received two $5 bills and three $50 bills. Since I could not use the $50 bills, I immediately went into the bank and asked for the bills to be changed to smaller ones. I presented my ATM card, the receipt for my transaction, and the $50 bills. I spent 7 minutes proving who I was (driver’s license), that I had an account at the bank (check from my checkbook), and digits from my social security number. All this to get smaller denominations that I could use to shop because the bank chose to fill their ATM with large bills.
I have been a customer at this bank (and others before it in the same location) for 30+ years. When I contacted M&T customer service to ask if this was their policy. I was told that, yes, it was and if I wanted smaller bills, I should go into the bank and write a check. I asked the purpose of their having an ATM and the customer service rep responded, "For your convenience." I am pulling my accounts totaling over $75,000 and going to another bank.

I was told to make full payments on my car that is totaled and the bank knew the checks were coming. M&T is the worst bank I ever encountered and by the grace of God I did not finance my new vehicle thru them. Terrible customer service and the management offered no support. Recently in May I was involved in a tragic car accident. I was told my insurance would cover most of my loan and to contact the bank in regards to the remaining balance. I called and was told by an M&T Representative the balance would be turned into a personal loan. My Insurance paid them immediately. I was worried about my credit and the representative had me make a payment for June and July assuring me everything would be fine.
Upon checking my credit I noticed it says 60 days late. I called the representative and was told I would have to dispute the incorrect information with the credit bureaus. The representative for M&T told me they had received another check from the dealership which had delayed the personal loan change. 90 percent of the loan has been paid in 4 payments and they still reported me as 60 days late. I have been lied to on multiple occasions. My credit has dropped significantly. I have been turned down for another car loan after M&T assured me my credit would not be impacted.
Upon talking to the representative I am told there is nothing they can do to resolve this except to contact the credit bureaus and challenge the false reports M&T made against me. My credit that I worked hard to keep in good standing is in ruin because of M&T. I'm paying an outrageous amount for rentals just so I can make it to work all because M&T did not follow through correctly. Actually the joke is there is no customer service. They don't listen and try to over talk the customer. The first year of my mortgage I paid a different bank approx 1250$ a month. Exactly 1 year into the loan I was sold to M&T, the first month went over fine at the 1250, the next month I was bumped up to 1350, I figured it was just taxes increased for the year and I wasn't happy but bought their story. The next year, my escrow apparently had a shortage, I looked into it and found it was an error of the county and quickly rectified it, I even received a tax refund for it. I contacted M&T to correct this and they informed me that they will only provide an escrow analysis once a year in January after the county provides them with the new bill in December.
I contacted the county assessor and they bill in October, you know the government end of fiscal year, and also were willing to provide me certified statements of my correct tax bill. I was excited with this news and called M&T back to have it fixed... They gave me the same story, that they only review escrow in January. Now I asked to remove the escrow since obviously I seem more capable of handling my own taxes, I submitted the form hand signed and to the exact fax number and person they instructed me to, I even placed contact information in the case there was a problem, no one called so I figured it would be solved by the end of the month... Nope.
Another $1670 bill from M&T, I called and asked what's up, they informed me, a month later, that my request was denied. Of course I questioned this and after several holds and transfers they came back stating it's part of my contract and cannot be removed. Well I then researched my loan, no mandatory escrow for my loan at all, I even contacted the VA to verify this. I called again and was given the same 2 answers, "no we will not remove it and no we will not re-evaluate it."
Now I am seeking an attorney to help rectify the situation since apparently I am not the only sucker sold out to this criminal group. What steams me the most is they told me "don't worry. You'll get any overage back in May of next year". Don't worry? My mortgage payment is almost $500 more a month than the agreement I signed, I am going out in a limb here and saying if anyone in the general population is hit with $500 extra a month, that is going to cause serious damage or hardship. Where do these people get off at thinking they can hold onto approximately $5-6000 for a year (most likely earning interest) and it's ok because they'll return it in one years time. Am I crazy?

Next I was told they had no idea what it was and since it was a mobile deposit, they couldn't look it up. I was told my paycheck I deposited "I tried to deposit twice", once again incorrect. I was then told it was something from Feb. I had deposited my paycheck using mobile deposit. While doing my deposit the app crashed, which happens a lot. I pulled up my statement and saw that even though I only did the deposit 1x it was showing 2x. I immediately called customer service and was told it would wash out, it happens frequently. Yes, it is my negligence that I didn't check my statements monthly.
I never noticed the extra money was in my acct due to the constant slow of overdraft charges I'm charged, some yes are my fault. Others no. I deposited my paycheck on April 27, withdrew a little money from the ATM and went about my weekend. I went to get money from the ATM Monday and couldn't. My whole paycheck had been debited from my acct. I had a 38.50 fee for the ATM withdrawal, for the other times I used the card over the weekend I also had 38.50 charges for each. My acct was debited Friday night the same day I made the deposit which overdraw my acct. Instead of my card being rejected my transactions were processed and I was charged the 38.50 fee for each one. I never ask for fees to be refunded from them.
I called to see if they'd refund my fees so I could close my acct. The rep said she could only refund 4. When I asked why I was told that's how it is. Needless to say I'm not happy. Yes I was at fault for not checking but how do you withdraw a WHOLE paycheck and charge 300 in fees on top of that? My acct will be closed and I'd NEVER have anything with M&T. Their charges for an overdraft are outrageous, customer service is non existent, attention to customer needs isn't there. I accompanied my husband on a visit to an M&T Bank branch at 5642 Baltimore National Pike, Catonsville on 4/2/18 where he has a checking account to which he has direct deposits. We are an elderly couple. My husband has no checks for this account as he no longer has starter checks and has not recently used the account to write checks. He was told in a previous visit that he had to pay $10 for a check in order to avoid a cash withdrawal of the sizable sum he was seeking. In order to avoid withdrawing over $1000 in cash, we waited for nearly 30 minutes to seek assistance to accomplish this withdrawal. Instead of assistance, we were called by a hostile and rude bank officer.
When I attempted to add further information to my husband's explanation of the reason for the visit, I was told by the bank officer that I needed to "Calm down." and "I have exactly 14 minutes before I'll be leaving." She then launched into a diatribe about previous customers who had been difficult and that she was not about to let that happen again that day. As I had not raised my voice or in any way indicated that I needed to "calm down", I was rather taken aback by her response to me. I raised my concern about why husband had no checks and requested assistance in not having to make a cash withdrawal given the fact that the bank was very small and I was concerned that the transaction would be heard and viewed by others in the long line at the window.
Her response was to summarily ignore me and to state to my husband that he would have to get back in line and pay $10 for a check or $6.00 for a money order as she had nothing to do with making withdrawals, "Even if I wanted to" she added. I was appalled and shocked by her insensitive and combative approach to us. I wrote a letter voicing this to the Chairman and CEO of M&T Bank, Mr. Rene Jones dated 4/2/18 and I have not received as much as an acknowledgement of receipt of my letter. I have advised my husband to close this account. My grandparents had lots of stocks from M&T Securities. My grandmother passed away in September 2017, and left her estate to me. Including all of her stocks. I have been stuck with every bill imaginable, and although I did not want to liquidate the stocks, I had no choice. I began this process in October of 2017. I had my attorney contact M&T Securities to liquidate and cash out the stocks. First off, the initial contact between my attorney and M&T was a very long wait. My attorney called several times asking for a letter of instruction on proceeding the liquidation. That simple letter of instruction did not end up coming until November.
Long story short, it is now April 9th 2018 and I just talked once again to an agent from M&T Securities, apologizing and sympathizing with my situation I am currently in because of M&T. Their excuse was, "the back office is very backed up". I am filing the proper complaints to the proper companies about my horrible experience with M&T. I hope anyone out there never gives one dime to M&T. They lie, mislead you, play games, and make excuses when it comes to giving you your funds back. They sure do take your money quick though! My family and family friends are spreading the word about what is happening with me and this awful company in hopes no one else ever had to go through the hassles and stress that comes with dealing with this company.
A couple weeks ago, I was promised my funds absolutely no later than April 3rd. It is April 9th and now they are saying I need an accountant if I want to stuff up the funds, (They knew since October I wanted to liquidate the stocks) and more paperwork. A huge company like this, and the only excuse they have is "They are so busy"? They are never too busy to take your money though! I never write reviews but I feel anyone elderly or anyone who does not fully know everything about the stock market, may become a victim of M&T like I currently am.
My attorney said he has never dealt with a company this incompetent in his over 30 years experience. M&T should be paying my attorney fees for every single call he made in my behalf and all the unnecessary trips my lawyer & I had to take to the bank because we were instructed to do so by M&T. Unfortunately, as of last year we had issues paying our mortgage due to being affected by Hurricane Harvey. Well, after completing the tasks (fax is the only way which cost me $40 each time) we haven’t heard back from them for a month, so like any right minded individual I called them and was assured they would look it over.
Lo and behold after doing this process of cat and mouse for 4 months they told me I’d have to resend the info because it is too old... (WTH). Now here is the kicker, I had to send this info in 4 times in total from October - March 2018. Each time they explained they “never received anything” even though my account number was on the top of each page and I have saved copies of the fax work. I've had the account open 6 months and I've had nothing problems from the beginning. My complaint will be of the most recent... A cashier's check or a bank check was given to me from a customer so I can buy supplies and start remodeling his house on Saturday. I DEPOSITED the check at 12:43 pm on Friday... A bank check is basically already cash, that's why I had the customer get a bank check.
Well someone at that specific branch of M&T Bank (10 Milton Ave. Highland N.Y. 12528) decided they would put a hold on this bank check, which is already cash, for 2 full business days. So, I will not be able to get cash from this check I DEPOSITED until Wednesday because they don't count Friday because I DEPOSITED it after 12 noon, Sat and Sunday are not business days at M&T Bank!!!
So Monday and Tuesday the check will sit in the bank waiting. So I will have to wait a total of 5 days to get cash from a cashiers check (Bank check) that should have cleared as soon as I put it into the account. The customer service is horrible at any branch you go into. All branches seem to be on their own page. I call the customer service number to ask questions and they refer you to your branch or one close to you because they make their own rules. My mother had a bank account and a living trust holding a safe-deposit box with M&T Bank. I flew across country (I live in Oakland, CA) to visit my mother when she was in the hospital, unable to leave; she was very insistent I should get into her safe deposit box. When I tried to get into the safe-deposit box, I was told I needed to get a power of attorney to do so -- despite the fact that the person present *knew* the box was held by the trust. When I got said document, I was told that I could not get into the box, as it was held by the trust, not my mother per se. Fine, I thought; we will see about changing the trust, and that will solve that. My mother passed away before the trust could be altered.
However: I was the successor trustee, explicitly listed as such on the trust documents. Therefore, I should now have access to the box, right? (which box might contain my mother's will.) Wrong; because *now* the fact that a certified death certificate was given to them, along with the certificate of trust was *irrelevant* -- they needed me to be her representative (executor, outside of Maryland) in order to follow the terms of the trust that they had previously used to deny me access to the safe deposit box.
Throughout, they have been dilatory and unhelpful (largely), and when I tried to communicate to the central bank, they insisted I needed to speak to the branch office, and transferred me back there. I would not recommend M&T Bank to anyone who wishes helpful service rather than obstructionism, and would *absolutely* not recommend anyone deal with them who expects any kind of prompt or caring service upon a family member's demise, or expects their heirs to be helped rather than hindered.

I would have taken the entire amount I closed with and left the bank. What should I do, when they have proof that I signed for it to be closed? I have already taken action on this matter and they said the same thing... "We see you signed for your savings account to be closed and that is your signature, so you closed it."
My over $1,000.00 was just sitting in my saving account for years. Then one day I know I came to the bank and took out $400 from the over $1,000.00 in my saving... that I know I did and that was ok. But then the bank said according to dates, I came back to the bank 5 months later and closed my account, then deposited some of that money (which the deposit slip was not written by me) into my checking account when I took the rest. What made it worst was when I talked to the bank manager, she became very disrespectful. At some point in the conversation, she said to me... "I don't know what you did with that money, but you closed your account." Then she said..."OH, COME ON YOU KNOW YOU TOOK WHAT MONEY!"
Another manager at that bank said to me... "Do you have a twin sister? Maybe if you go home and think about it, maybe you will remember what you did with the money." So as far as they could see, I did have $207.81 put into my checking account, so I should be Ok with that since they sent me a notice over a year ago saying that my account was closed.

Worst car loan experience I have ever had. To begin with, when I initially opened my account I never received any billing information concerning loan payments. I assumed that my payments would not start for 45 days like most banks. Nope, not this one. I didn't receive any billing information until my first payment was past due and then demanded a double payment. I attempted to assure them that I never received the initial information concerning account number, payment due date, or payment amount.
When I finally received my bill it was already past due. I tried to explain for over an hour to whomever would listened what happened. Customer service agents transferred me to several different departments with no resolution. After I was transferred to the department I needed, it was conveniently closed and I was forced to pay a double payment. This has been the worst banking experience ever. I will say I have a great interest rate on my car loan, but that's it.

My mortgage was sold to M&T Bank. Ever since, dealing with this bank has been a nightmare. Their customer service people are incompetent, their loan officers don't know what they are doing, what you are told via phone conversations and what actually happens are two different things, and they are always looking for a way to charge you more for them doing nothing but harassing their customers.
A couple of years ago, I fell behind 30 days on my mortgage. I was assigned someone that was going to help me get back on track and possibly lower my payments or put the delinquent payments at the end of my loan. Conversations went on for 18 months! I turned in my paperwork 7 times. Three times they couldn't find it so it had to be resent. Two times my loan specialist uploaded the wrong information and made my account show I was making $10,000 more than I was. I really liked this one because I got to argue with them several times per month on how much I actually did make. Showing pay stubs and payroll sheets apparently weren't good enough... because they "knew exactly what I made and verified with my employer's payroll person". That was comical. What was even more funny was the fact that they never called my employer to talk with payroll because I am the one that does payroll! They didn't know that at the time.
Then they tried to say that they spoke with someone there but couldn't give me a name. I went to the office and asked everyone there if they had spoken to someone from M&T Bank. Everyone said no one had called from there. The company I work for has a total of 6 employees including me so this wasn't a hard task... I ended up getting caught up on my own after being told they would help and not to catch my account up because they would help.
I ended up falling behind again about 6 months ago. I got the same runaround about the paperwork and that they would help. The newest thing is to keep charging my account $14 per month because they need to send someone to my house to make sure it is occupied even though I speak with them, get their certified mail, and deal with them calling me 5-7 times per day every day. If they can come up with a bogus charge, they will add it to your account! Beware of them. If you can stay away, DO IT!!!

I asked the bank to add 2 payments to the back of the loan and they have refused but continually offer a deed in lieu of title. They have been of no help.
I understand that they cannot file for foreclosure until I exceed 90 days of no payments. Even though I am in constant contact with them, I come home to 3-4 messages daily to call them. I call them and we go through the same script, "Is the home occupied, why are you behind, when are you going to pay?" It has become harassing and I have decided not to return any calls and have blocked their number. Banks wonder why they have so many homes in this area sitting vacant for nonpayment, I am not the only one struggling. If you are looking for a mortgage, I would suggest looking at another company!

We have a Controller who is going to jail for stealing more than 1/2 a million dollars from us. We didn't realize the theft was taking place because M&T was refusing provide us with bank statement that were lost in Storm Sandy. We hired a lawyer to force the M&T to provide the records. When they finally sent the records the theft was clear. We saw checks where the payee, and amount on the checks did not match what was recorded in our accounting software. There were over a 120 checks altered. Most of these checks were deposited by the controller into her personal account using the bank's remote deposit application on her smartphone. These applications are not secure. They cannot tell if any of the information on the check has been altered, and the system can't tell if there has been white out used on the check.
These checks started out payable to a vendor. The controller altered the payee to read cash or petty cash. The bank response says the checks they viewed read petty cash or petty cash so that made the checks Bearer Paper, and thus did not require an endorsement. So the bank saw 120+ deposits from this women come through and never once kicked back any check for lack of endorsement or even called us to ask why we were issuing checks to cash or petty cash. We had some of our employees try this at other banks, and NONE OF THE BANKS would take the checks through the scanning application. We had them try in person at a teller and all were turned away because of lack of endorsement and visible alterations.
We went a step further in testing the deposit and withdrawal security at M&T. We had someone unauthorized to sign checks at our company, sign a full week's worth of payroll in two companies. The result was unbelievable. All the checks were presented in person to a teller, and every check was cleared without a single phone call to our office. The tellers did not notice the signature was of name not authorized as a signatory. There is no security at M&T. They want your deposits but do nothing to protect your funds from being fraudulently taken from you. Leave your money at M&T at your own risk!!!

Our loan was recently purchased by this bank from a reputable bank that we never had a problem with. In 20 years we have never missed a mortgage payment. Our home was demolished by hurricane Irma this past week. When we talked to FEMA they told us that mortgage companies will allow you to defer the next 3 mortgage payments until the end of the loan to give people a chance to get some of the repairs done and make the house inhabitable again. When I contacted this bank, they said they were aware of this policy, but they don't allow for it. They told me if we missed the next 3 mortgage payments we could apply for a loan modification. They would report us as 3 months delinquent on our credit reports and raise the rates and charge us closing costs. WTF??
Maybe we should just let them deal with the 5 feet of mud and debris that is left and walk away. By the time they could take possession after foreclosure the house would be engulfed in mold and sewage, well beyond repair. Maybe then they would realize that postponing 3 months payments would have been much more financially advantageous to them, not to mention it is just the right thing to do. Way to understand the needs of your customers during this federal disaster. HORRIBLE COMPANY!!!

I have never dealt with a banking institution that is as ill-equipped and unreliable as M & T. After my mortgage loan was sold on my out of state rental property to M & T, M & T notified me 6 months later that the automatic payments which had been set up for over 6 years and in which I had never been as much as a day late paying, did not transfer. M & T notified me of this via a postcard a day after they sent me a certified letter noting foreclosure warning proceedings. Then I had to pay for their attorney costs to close the matter and my credit score tanked. I tried to explain that the property was managed by a realty company and that I had never even received a phone call from M & T regarding the matter and letters from M & T were sent to the out of state rental property and my previous address.
They refused to reverse the credit reporting and refused my offer to provide previous lender reporting that showed that the mortgage had never been paid late since origination of the loan several years prior. Their customer service rep told me that "I should manage my finances better." Fast forward 6 years later and I am selling the property and M & T sent me a bill for $1,200 for the same attorney/foreclosure warning proceedings that I paid in 2012. The property never went into foreclosure and this has been verified by my current primary residence lender and a previous lender too with the state of Georgia.
Yet, I have been following up with M & T for 6 weeks, made 7 phone calls and customer service keeps promising me they will fix the issue and call me back within 24-48 hours and no one calls me back. Now, I will again have to pay $1,200 to M & T for the sale to close this week while they say they are handling as a urgent request, although I have been told this three times already during the last 3 weeks and have never received a return phone call. Sadly, my review is joining the ranks of the trillions of others who have had a bad experience with M&T. As a business and personal account holder (soon to be former) I was not only treated unfairly and unjustly when seeking banking products for my business but until now, I never closed my accounts despite the NUMEROUS fraudulent and bad practices of this bank. I will start by stating that there are a few branch associates and phone reps that are very professional...but that doesn't negate that there are times when multiple ATMs are not only down, but will take the cash to be deposited and then malfunction where you now have to wait weeks to get your cash placed back into your account. OR when an ATM doesn't work at all. And then there are the actual banking products, which this bank notoriously will not offer even longstanding loyal customers. It is sad that this bank has come to be a bad experience.
I wanted to take my M&T bank accounts across country with me and know that I will be closing them to instead work with a local bank in my new state and a national bank. There was a time when you could open a new account and get pens, bags etc, interest in your savings accounts, something to show that you are valued. Keep searching for the banking institutions that still do this because they are out there and M&T is not one of them. Sadly, the great reps and branch associates will be at other banks when people finally close their accounts and go elsewhere and this bank closes. Treat your banking customers fairly... you are using THEIR money after all. Google the money laundering drug proceeds that went through this bank in 2014, which should propel this bank to give every client a great experience. #putyourmoneyunderthemattressinstead #stayaway #crowdfundinsteadofaskingthemforbankingproducts

First off the bank charges fees that most other banks have done away with years ago, like a $3 to transfer money to another bank, and $10 a month to use a money management software like Quicken. Already a reason not to do business with them. Second, a company that I regularly do business with accidental took a large amount of M&T (which was listed as a secondary account) without alerting me. M&T is an account I made a long time ago and almost never use, and thus it did not have the required funds. M&T immediately charges a $40 overdraw fee without notifying me (while it is your responsibility to check, most banks this day and age will notify you of this), then 5 days later without notifying me charged me another $40.
Finally they send me a collections letter, which incorrectly claims I had already been notified. I call M&T and the first person I speak to (whom I confirm works for M&T not a debt agency) keeps trying to get me to set up a payment plan, ignoring the main reason I am calling. I finally get put on with someone who can help who says that unless the company reverses the charges, they cannot even consider waiving the fees. I call the company that charged me and they say (understandably) that because the bank accepted the charge, they are unable to reverse it unless it's a fraud incident. I call the bank telling them that I can settle the account today, and ask them to give me a one time courtesy waive as I am a long time customer who acted in good faith, and the incident was due to a bureaucratic mistake rather than a lack of funds.
They told me they wouldn't waive it as it was not a bank error. I told them I would then settle my account and immediately close it once the balance went to 0, and I was told that was my decision. I have settled my account and will be closing it within the next few days. I honestly should have done it years ago with all the headache M&T routinely gives me, I have about 6 accounts open with various banks and M&T is by far the worst. My advice, stay as far away as possible and do not open an account. Pick any other bank, if you're rural and have limited options pick M&T only as a last option.

I tried getting them to reimburse me for at least one just to be nice because I never, ever, ever go negative but nope.
The other problem lies with the saving overdraft protection fees. It took money from my savings for purchases I made while my account was still positive. It did this 2 times and when I mentioned this they just said it covered the purchases, I told them the purchases were made when it was positive. She just shook her head and said nothing. Didn't even care. I then asked "if I close my account how would that affect my direct deposit." She went on to explain how it would affect my direct deposit, and then said "but since you're closing your account I won't put a word with the manager." I said "I'm only closing my account if I can't get at least one of these and my savings account fees reimbursed since I never go negative. As I explained what I needed to do she was busy joking with her fellow teller about house parties. I provided my ID as requested and she returned it with a flip of the wrist. I worked in customer service all my life, and I have never seen such arrogant and disrespectful treatment of a customer. M&T human resources better start using better hiring criteria for its people other than empty headed party girls.

What do you do when your mortgage was sold and you were not informed. What do you do when you find out and the new company is not set up to take your mortgage payments? What do you do when you are in a horrible financial bind and the bank offers to help and save you some money? I saved $3.00 from that scam and I am currently behind. I attempted to catch up and I called to make a payment. After being berated by Customer Service for not making the payments, I was shouted at, demeaned and the payment was taken from a very old account not used in over 16 months... on purpose, I'm sure. I called twice to try and figure out why the payment didn't go through. Each time berated about being behind and confronted with... "Well! What are you going to do about it!!" I spoke to a manager who did not want to fix the payment. She wanted to know what my problem was and why I couldn't pay.
I HATE M&T BANK!!! They want you to fail. They scam you with a fake help program. This fake program gave hope and increased the overall amount of my loan without telling me. That should be illegal but I guess this is all a part of the new world order??!! Then they WON'T make your payments over the phone or give you access to make payments online. WTF!!! They will go down in history as the MOST unfriendly, unaccommodating, ** in history. I was told that I don't have to call them but... I do have to call them because they won't let me access my account online... I curse you all!!! I hope you burn in HELL.

I pay my mortgage payment religiously every month through my online banking. The payment is due by the 16th of the month or they charge a late fee. I have the payment sent on the 6th of every month. That gives the payment 10 days to reach them. This month I received my statement from them with a late fee assessed. I thought, no problem I'll just call them and ask them to refund it. They REFUSED to reverse the late fee. I told them I had a confirmation from my bank that the payment was sent from my bank on the 6th. They told me too bad. They only allow one reversal per the life of the loan and I already had one reversed in October of 2015 (for the same reason).
I asked to speak with a supervisor and he told me the same thing. REALLY??? Only one reversal for the lifetime of a 30 year loan and it was not even my fault??? They refused to even consider that they might be at fault for not processing the payment on time. They blamed the post office and my bank. Don't do business with these people!!! From reading the other reviews it is obvious they are rip-off artists and need to be investigated!!! Personally, I am going to shop for a refinance with another institution. I will NEVER do business with M&T again.

I called them again and they said I have to deal with DMV directly to change my name on the title. As a customer, I did everything right, I was on the phone for over an hour, they told me my information was updated and they are sending mail. We wanted to re-fi our home mortgage to save a few dollars. We always paid on time and even ahead of time. I started in mid-August, was told it would take 30 days to complete. Still no closure the week of Christmas. We had at least 3 closing dates only to be told everything was ready yet. I got a call that we would close Dec. 27, 2016. Two days before closing, I was told by M&T Bank I needed a check for over two thousand dollars for closing costs. I was told from day ONE that all costs would be added to our loan. So since I did not have the two thousand plus dollars they say I canceled the loan and therefore they keep my $275.00 fee to start the loan.
How can a bank like M&T stay in business with all the bad reviews I see. Do they even have one good review??? They advertise their loan interest is 2.7% but they told us 4.75%. They say they didn't know we had a manufactured home. We have a credit rating of 879 and they tried to shaft us. Do not deal with these people. They are bad news. M&T will take your money and run. I called and requested help through their Mortgage and Home Equity Repayment Assistance. They told me I had 90 days to complete the paperwork involved. They told me they would send me the application immediately as the 90 days began with that phone call.
After a week, I had not received the form. I called them back and they said they would send another application. This took another week. I completed all the paperwork with all the requested forms. They would call weekly requesting additional information they needed. All this was sent in a timely manner on my side. Last night I received a call saying they declined my request as I had not signed and dated one item they requested and I was now over the 90 days. They had that documentation for several weeks and knew it wasn't signed and dated, but never mentioned it during any of the weekly phone calls. They purposely waited out the 90 days to mention it so they could decline my request. They are vultures preying on those who really want to pay their bills, but are going through a rough time.

They just keep asking for more paperwork, that even if you provide they just keep asking for more and NEVER release. By LAW after 3 years of no activity on an account by its owner they are bound to turn it over to the state and THEY DON'T - THEY KEEP THE MONEY. Dad has been dead since 2010. I had an account with M and T for 5 years. I specified that I didn't want to have overdraft protection, and that I just wanted any charges that exceeded my funds to be rejected. The bank employee assured me they would be. I moved and tried closing my account, but they told me that I couldn't close my bank account over the telephone unless there was a $0.00 balance. So I waited until more funds had been taken from the account. Apparently, the bank DID allow charges that exceeded the funds to be debited to the account, because when I looked later, I had a negative balance. Again, the bank would not close the account because I had a negative balance not a $0.00 balance. So I had too much money and too little in the account, so either way M and T would not close the account.
On top of that, M and T does a third degree drill of me every time I call up the bank to check on a matter related to my checking account. They ask my social security number, where I lived, the bank I opened the account at. Do I remember the bank I opened the account at from 6 years ago? Every time, I end up having to dig through my purse for my debit card to tell them the number. They are highly paranoid. In addition, I tried to set up MINT financial budgeting software with my M and T account, and when the MINT budgeting software tried to connect with M and T, the M and T checking account was frozen. I had to call them up to resolve the problem several times. I had to stop using MINT with M and T.

Run, I mean seriously run from this corrupt company. I don't write reviews unless service is excellent or horrible. M&T is the worst I have ever dealt with. They leave Verizon and the DMV look like fairy godmothers. I am making this statement only to save the reader from entering a nightmare. I'm not going into a tangent, just the facts as briefly as possible. The first paragraph says all you need to make a decision if you are considering doing any sort of business with them.
I signed a contract with Hudson City Savings bank for my home loan and paid on time for 8 years, no problems. M&T takes, buys the loan, and HUGE problems begin but not until about 8 after transition. They decided to add, get this, $6,000 onto my escrow amt on the loan and on the 1st month after this fraud, my loan payment went from 2500 to 3800 for wind insurance that was never required before by them or Hudson city. They told me all of NY had to pay wind insurance. NOT TRUE. After an appeal and many, many frustrating phone calls without the promised follow-up, without them posting proper notes on my account of conversations (luckily they were recorded and when I requested they be listened to the rep changed her tune a bit but I was still in the same bad situation), at least I was not treated like a liar for the rest of that conversation.
Letters sent to them became lost. One department could not pull up notes from another department. I mean I could go on and on but my face is going red again just writing this. Turns out it was never a NY State mandate as they claimed. It was a requirement... of their bank. To change the terms of my original agreement should be illegal and I told them that. It's criminal. They didn't budge... just kept adding more to my monthly payments.
Unfortunately my business took a $ dip last year after health problems/surgery, so at the moment I do not look good enough on paper to get a loan with another bank. It's like I am shackle to them and at their mercy for now. Can't stop paying what they want or they will put me in default. I am a hardworking, honest person who has never missed a payment on my mortgage. This is not right. Oh and on doing research this week, turns out the CEO was convicted of criminal frauds charges for business conducted at M&T.
I'm so glad you took the time to read this if it helps you. I am not one to crumble and not fight back when there is an injustice but after months and countless hours (I logged in 78 hrs after the 1st month of this whole mess) I realized they are just one of those big corrupt businesses you can't fight unless you have a bucket full of money. Serious... you've got to stay away. I feel better that I might've helped you but I am in a bad way otherwise. Bottom line, I lost the appeal, have to get wind coverage according them unless I wanted to go into default and ruin my good credit.

M&T Mortgage is the worst possible mortgage company we've ever had to do business with. They admit they don't talk to one another. You can't get an actual phone number from them - staff people claim they don't have phone numbers, always referring you to their 800 line which you can't get through on, unless you have 6 or 8 hours to wait. I would not recommend M&T Mortgage to anyone under any circumstances!

My checking and savings accounts were recently frozen at M&T Bank because of a mix up with a creditor. After calling the creditor and getting that resolved, I went to the bank to make the payment and clear up the account, while the creditor faxed the necessary paperwork to the bank. When I spoke with the creditor they informed me they could hold twice the amount I owed; however when I went to the bank, my entire balances were frozen on both of my accounts, totaling over three times the amount the creditor had been authorized to deduct. I signed the required legal documents to remove the hold, which they faxed to the bank's legal department at 4:00 p.m. (Their legal department said they could do it if they received the fax by 4:30.) I was at the bank at 3:00 - it took an hour just to get this point. However, by 4:30 the accounts were still frozen and I was unable to get my money.
New York State law says they can freeze twice the amount the creditor is asking for, but the bank wouldn't let me withdraw the money over and above that amount either. Even worse, the branch manager, Saundra **, was extremely rude to me. She told me in a very rude, sarcastic voice, "You can call this number and complain to them!" (Referring, I think, to the bank's legal department she was calling.) I hadn't been complaining at all up to this point, I was being very patient with them. M&T also never notified me that there was a legal action (hold) going on with my account. If I had known the day it happened, I could have started this process three days sooner and not been out of money. I have to go back Monday and see if the hold has been lifted, but it still may not be removed.
Not only is M&T Bank breaking the law, they were very unhelpful, extremely rude to me the entire time I was there, and very unprofessional. The tellers were standing behind the counter talking loudly about how they just wanted to get out of there at 5:00 and go drink vodka! I'm definitely closing my accounts there and advising all of my family and friends to do the same.

Last year I went on short term disability but my claim for pay was denied. A couple days before returning to work they terminated me. Lost 3 months income and then 6 months reduced from unemployment. I had been searching for work for 7 months but nothing was in the area. Just as my benefits ran out, an old supervisor so my resume and I was hired but I had to commute over an hour away. I needed a job so I took it. We treaded water for the 9 months due to my small 401k disbursement. Then due to the rise in medical cost, economy and insurance coming due I got behind 2 payments.
I started the loss - m&t process only 1 payment behind in July 2016 and knew August could not be made but could start monthly payments in September. We received breach notices and made a payment with some extra funds toward the arrears for September. By this time I completed their online request for assistance and was never contacted. Called and got info at which time they gave my account number over the phone!! Along with contacting HUD who advised to pull the package offline. I filled it out Huds pack and in the meantime the banks came in so Extra docs that they had I pulled and signed.
I emailed opsmtgsupport@mtb.com but encrypted it to protect my info since it contained so much personal info. I followed up a couple times a week by phone leaving messages and emailing. I finally started getting vm from them to call. Due to my new work schedule and commute my hours matched their call center. I can not take personal calls and have privacy to discuss at work. I sent an email explaining this and to please leave details on vm or send email. NOTHING BUT THE SAME REPEATED VM.
So I faxed the docs and a few days later received a missing items letter. I emailed the requested items encrypted and started with the follow ups again SAME VM FROM THEM. I eventually sent in a complaint which was read and contradicts what I was told today. The response I got was rude, smug and gave no assistance. I was told 16 mos ago they mailed something regarding where to send complaints and they did not need to respond but would do so. (I was heavily medicated at the time and do not remember much of the time frame.)
Finally was told they can not accept encrypted emails and for privacy reasons they could not respond but by a call. I faced the items per the request on 10.1.16 and started following up the same way and advising of my hours and commute. I thought everything was sent and did not receive another missing items letter nor a completion letter. I have approximately 15 emails and all 20 calls documented. 10.7.16 we went to make a payment with additional funds and was blocked from making a payment.
I sent emails and called trying to get the block off. SAME DAMN VM RECEIVED. Today I had to appear at court in the county I live so I had a little time to call before attending. So I did, tried to explain situation - they did not care they do not have email. Incoming emails they scan and save to a file and nothing else. So things I explained would not get to my rep. I was advised I need to call as this is their only communication method! Explained the only reason able to get a call out was b/c of court. She said this is my responsibility and need to call. I asked if they would reimburse me for my time off to make a call where I have no privacy. It is my responsibility.
I was given a list and advised that since I did CURE the missing items letter no more get sent and need to call in. So if I can not make calls do to my schedule there is no way to know what needs fixed. Meanwhile I am 2 payments behind, late charges assessing and fees accumulating. One of my calls I asked for communication by mail so now they will not even do that. I got the documents they needed and hung up.
Called FHA National Servicing Center - explained the situation and was told I need to call the bank explained I did and no help. Call the bank or get a HUD counselor which I need to take off work for and do not have vacation time yet. I hung up as it was a waste of time. Called the branch to get the amount to bring current and want to make sure I could pay do to the block. He had to call me back. When he did he hooked me to the people I already spoke to and was informed the payment amount and that I needed to call in to make it as the... I hung up on her. So now I will not be reviewed, can't make a payment and can't make a call. I have spoke to several former employees and they all left b/c of the new M&T thought process and all stated they want to get bigger and build the base with money.
Now I have worked loss mitigation, bankruptcy and foreclosure for 15 years between 2 banks. I under a consent order from OCC and CFPB working with reviewers from CFPB on my side. Never have I seen a lack of customer service this great even from the big banks. I am the only person at the bank where I am currently work that speaks to customers on loss mit and interactions with BK and FC. I do not know everything but communicate by phone and email as people's schedules need to be accommodated to truly help. M&T MAY NOT WANT YOUR HOUSE BUT THEY WANT YOUR INTEREST LATE CHARGES AND FEES!!
I need to work as my insulin cost went from 50.00 to 650.00 when I lost my job and it sometimes comes down to being alive or having a roof over my head. I am working to try and get medical assistance but will need insulin. Prior to this getting done. They do not care and FHA was a waste of time. On another note with them when I got my mortgage I opened a checking acct where the minimum balance was 5.00. They now require me to have 5000.00. The only time that happened was when my one income tax was deposited and they took 14.00 a month for servicing it and balance under the limit. AVOID THEM!!

I was a customer for two years on a marine loan, always paid on time. When I sold the boat on 8/17/16 they advised me the title would be sent to me within 5-7 business days as long as I called and requested it once loan was paid. They confirmed loan was paid and I requested to mail title. Mind you my address had NOT changed in two years and they mailed me a BILL every month in this time.
NOW - since loan was paid and they mailed the title, something happened with their system and they mailed it to my address but their system changed the city. So the Post Office sent it back. Now we are headed two weeks in because I waited the 7 business days before I called and they told me to wait a few more days and then call again and so I did and then after 10 business days (going into 2nd week) they stated they did receive it back. So I asked that it be overnighted. I was told they would do so only if I paid for it with a FedEx account. I said "even though it was not my fault you mailed it wrong?" They advised it was not their fault either. So after speaking with a supervisor she still said NO. So I paid for it to be sent FedEx. Overnight.
Next day - I did NOT receive it. I called and was told that was a different department and they were closed (4:30 pm every day) to call back (no one ever offered to call me). So I called the next day to check into it and for a tracking number, they could not provide one she said. Therefore they did not send it. After requesting another supervisor to assist me this person advised he would call the dept that would send out the FedEx and request the tracking number and call me back by 11 am. So at 11:15 (phone in my pocket so I could answer right away) I get a Voice mail alert. They called through the app that puts straight to voice mail, stating that the titles would be sent out that day by 2 but still did not have a tracking number. When I called that evening at 4 pm they still could not provide me the tracking number. No matter who I asked or what I asked they always said NO and they could not reach the person in charge of sending out the FedEx.
So we are now going into the 3rd week after phone calls and runarounds. They provided a shipping number and told me they were sending the TITLE to the loan that was paid off 3 weeks prior. When I received the package the next day and opened it I could NOT believe it. There literally was a loan paid off paper and NO TITLES. I proceeded to call and raise Cain due to how unprofessional that I had to pay for a paper for a paid loan and still no title and demanded that I speak to someone that could actually help me. They never seem to care. Every one always just said NO. I requested that the titles be placed in the FedEx and sent to me overnight and would not get off the phone until I was told something positive.
Still I sat there and she just ran around every avenue of the word No, call back, she left a message for the person, blah blah. I finally realized something... I had paid off the loan 3 weeks prior, I had requested my titles. Then I paid (when I should not had to) for the FedEx and they still HELD the titles. So I advised her by them sending the FedEx and remaining to hold the titles that an attorney would find that as refusal to provide me what I paid for and that I would not continue to call and beg for what was due to me. And she just stated for me to do what I need to.
But then my phone rang and I answered and it was the CSR from M&T. She stated that she placed another call and the lady that was in charge of the FedEx happened to still be in the office. (Although the last 3 weeks I was told they left at 4:30) It was close to 5pm and she stated she had a tracking number for me. Then the next day I received my titles. Funny how things shifted when I mentioned the fact that they were HOLDING my titles to a PAID loan. The names of some of the CSR's were Liz, Harley (she at least called me back to provide the tracking number), Suzette, and Debbie from Documentation and Collateral (they were responsible on sending the titles) and sent the first time only a loan payoff paper.
The 2 FedEx charges to my account was $70. M&T charged me for both shipments. When I called and ask to be refunded for at least one charge guess what I was told... NO. That it was not their fault the zip code pulled another city (system problem not mine) I paid. Then when their employee deliberately sent a pay off paper and NOT the title after she was told the issue by at least 4 different CSR's - I had to pay the 2nd time as well. This CSR stated that they don't sent titles overnight but regular mail, I tried to explain to her the fact of the matter and she also could see all the notes in the computer from every phone call made. She still stated that they do not refund.
I tried to explain to her that the right thing / Customer Service to do was when I called the last time and had to ask for my titles AGAIN.... M&T should have NEVER charged MY FedEx account for their 2nd failure to send what I paid off. They are a poor excuse for a Bank and have the worst Customer Service I have ever encountered. I never received my titles until 9/8/16. I called FedEx and told them the situation and even though they didn't have a part in this fight, they credited my account one charge. During that process, I ran into several glitches with their Online system (in regard to bank-to-bank transfers), and was forced to contend with M&T's Online Banking support system - which is an absolute horror! You are held on hold for up to 35 minutes (during which time, their badly chosen music blares into the phone), and then you cannot get a straight answer from anyone. It seems they operate much the same way that some Phone service providers do - they read off a list of things you're supposed to try (which mostly do not work), and after that, they are lost. I finally managed to set up the transfer on 06/22/16 - which means THAT day, the account was deemed to be active.
When I arrived here (Depew), I found out that M&T had been running a promotion where they would deposit $150 in your account, if and when you activated an at least one time direct deposit of $100 minimum. I called the M&T Online Support line again (seeing that the branches refuse to address anything to do with the Online aspect - again, if I had known THAT; I would never have opened an account with this bank). After much back and forth - because I had also not been told that one would need a promotional code (which wasn't issued or even mentioned when I opened the account, but which I was supplied with after much back and forth again). They assured me that they would "make a notation on my account" and activate that promo code.
To make a long story short... my Direct Deposit went into their bank on August 17th and now I'm being told that they will not honor their promise because "no code had been entered on my account". I advised them today that I do not feel that their missing information that should have been entered by the "Manager" I spoke with in regard to this issue is not MY problem and, if this is not resolved to my satisfaction by Monday, I will lodge a complaint with the BBB for misrepresentation and scamming me. The only reason I opened an account with this particular bank was total nostalgia. I worked for them for a short time 50 years ago. So much for nostalgia!!
This action on their part has not only caused me HOURS of phoning, e-mailing, researching, etc., etc., but I now also have to spend additional time setting up another account, and changing my Direct Deposit (as well as a couple of automatic bill paying setups) and all I received from this Company is a generic "we're sorry for the misunderstanding". I am utterly disgusted at their practices. And I can not even go to their branch and/or headquarters to get this straightened out. Last time I tried, I was told "we can't see what M&T Online is doing in regard to accounts". What??? DO NOT bank with M&T Bank! I have heard many more complaints about them in the meantime. NOT good!

M&T Bank bought out my Hudson City Bank, in NJ. December 2015. My small home improvement loan $77.00 was just about paid off. I called to find out payoff amount and the worst experience only began to evolve. I was rudely told I would have to wait until it was sent to me. Upon receiving this information, the letter had NO Bank letter head or printed on paper indicating it was M&T Bank. I sent in my final payment, which was then returned without any reasons; only another statement (again just a typed up piece of paper, no letter head) with an increase cost of interest. I contacted customer service supervisor, also said I could pay at the bank. The teller did not know at all what she was doing. She called service rep because the amount was more than stated on letter, (which I had with me). The teller still confused I then asked to speak to the rep on the phone. She said "I don't speak to the customer!"
So I refused to pay the additional amount not shown on my letter. I sent my payment again according to their instruction, certified with check etc... Received another letter again with check returned. Now added an additional amount stating I had no homeowner's insurance and charge me for a year's worth... I again contacted customer service, spoke to a supervisor, told me to send in a copy of proof of insurance and then pay amount (1. which I never did with Hudson Saving Bank, 2. Plus added interest?). The paperwork was then faxed to the bank. Next Letter, again no bank letter head, with only partial insurance amount taken off. Again I called customer. I asked to speak to supervisor. I spoke to a rep, an insurance supervisor, a payoff dept supervisor, and her supervisor... The situation was resolved within 45min, then I was conveniently disconnected.
I called customer service again, to connect me back to Robert the Supervisor. He stated they would fax the new amount so I could send in my payment. $77.00 + recording fees... NO fax received. I cannot pay off this simple little loan amount left. It is as if they keep attaching charges for no reason... Run from this Bank, take your money out and Run. I have told each person I spoke with to send out a resume and leave this highly unprofessional bank. This is so ridiculously not customer oriented. Not even close to friendly. This bank is Unorganized and foolish with MY money and loan. As of today Monday August 15th, 2016... no fax. Call customer service again! No response from Supervisor Robert in Payoff dept. This is the most unprofessional experience. Not even knowing what or why fees are being attached. I just want to pay off this small loan and put this awful experience behind me!

I have been a customer and fan of M&T Bank ever since they bought out my old bank, All First (formerly First National Bank of Maryland). Whether dealing with someone in the branch or over the phone, I've always found customer service to be top notch. I do 95% of my bill paying through the Bill Pay feature of their online banking. They honor their bill pay guarantee (if you set a payment up in the system at least 5 days ahead of its due date and it is received late by the creditor, M&T will reimburse you the cost of any assessed late fee). I've only had to collect on this once and it was several years ago. But it's good for me to know first hand that it does work!

I very clearly explained how I was making my deposits from my checking account since I am retired and do not have a paycheck to it through. Was told how to do it and made a deposit upfront of $200 and have been doing 50@ from my checking. I called to see where my $200 was and was told it had to be a payroll direct deposit of $100, not 2 $50's and my checking account was not considered direct deposit even though you receive it directly each month. I was told by your employee how to do it. Just a big lie on your part not to give me my $200. I will tell everyone I know about your bad practice. Oh, I called your customer service 3 times in between and no one mentioned anything about my deposits not being correct. Bad practice!

This is the worse business I ever have encountered. Their service was unprofessional every time I have ever dealt with them. They charge you to withdraw your own money from the tellers. They lack the action of informing their customers about fraudulent activity. This bank is horrible and should be closed down. When a customer schedules a transfer they take the funds at any given time and day. They do not waive any overdraft fees no matter what the incident may be even if it's a double charge, a fraud claim, even a bank error they caused. They do not work well with their customers. The many branches that I have been to coincidentally have the most unfriendly and non-helpful people currently working.
Every time I call into the call center my call is not treated with urgency nor am I treated as a customer. This is the absolute worse bank I have ever dealt with. They transfer funds early or late, never when they are scheduled. I would never refer them to anyone. Their hours of business are inconvenient. I highly recommend people stay as far away from anything M&T Bank involved. This bank does not work with you - they work against you and steal your money. They need to be investigated immediately. I was so unhappy with my service there I have officially changed banks. It was a hassle to change the account info with all my utility companies but it was the best thing I have ever done. BEWARE OF M&T BANK!

I opened my checking and saving account in M&T over 3 years ago. I am on J-1 visa and I am working at a research institute right now. I have lived in the US for over 6 years and my husband and I started a green card application process. This is my first credit card application in the US. I previously had credit cards in other countries. Since I had been reasonably satisfied with M&T, I applied for a Visa credit card and was told that it should not be a problem as I fulfill all requirements. But I got rejected and the reason is that I am NOT A PERMANENT US RESIDENT. Although the federal Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibits creditors from discriminating against credit applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, etc. The reason they are giving me is discrimination.
They did not ask me to provide any employment information, so they have no idea whether I could pay money back on time or not. I am assuming that using "Permanent US resident" as the only variable to draw their conclusion, many of your customers might have churned. I am very disappointed with M&T, and I want to specifically mention two points: 1) If they do not accept non-resident application, why not advertise this on your website. Then I do not need to waste my time applying for it, especially after telling me that I fulfill all requirements!; 2) I am not sure whether their rejection will affect my credit history. I heard it will.
I am not upset that my application was denied because I am not a US resident. M&T has every right to protect its interests and be conservative (even though their reason is somewhat questionable). What I am upset about is the way this entire situation has been handled. But mostly, I am upset that I have an unnecessary hard pull on my credit report that could have been easily avoided with a bit of communication and better processes. I am hugely disappointed with M&T and will take my business elsewhere, not to mention that I won't recommend M&T.

M&T has to be the worst bank that I have ever dealt with. We own a small business and had 3 accounts with M&T Bank for the past 5 years (started when they were Provident Bank). Out of the blue we got a call from a company that had an automatic payment from one of the accounts call us to say that they payment did not go through. We were a little surprised since there was over $35,000 in the combined accounts and the bill was $150. My wife called their Customer Service (on the weekend) to see what was going on and they said that their system was down, and to call back on Monday.
When she called on Monday she was told that all of our accounts had been closed by M&T. She was shocked and asked why, and was told that they periodically review business accounts and decide which ones are "worth keeping." They further said that we should have known this because we were sent a letter a month earlier. My wife asked if it was a certified letter and they said no. I was and still am in shock. We have kept an average balance over the years of $25,000 in the accounts and never had an issue, and they close our accounts because they feel we are not worthy of them.
We are going over this afternoon to get a certified check for our balance and read them the riot act. How dare they. Then we will go to either PNC Bank or SunTrust and re-open new accounts. Once that is done we will be writing letters to the M&T Board, the BBB, and anyone else who will listen. I hope this joke of a bank goes under and soon.

Doing business with M&T is not recommended for a multitude of reasons. First of all, their customer service is the worst of all companies still alive today: waiting times of 45min average, rude answers, people sending you through to equally ignorant others all the time etc. Secondly, their processes are 1950s at best; even for a money transaction people start planning conference calls together and it can take days. Thirdly, they fail to communicate what they change to you, so you may find your account completely blocked for no reason, with their IT-system not allowing them to unblock it. Finally, they suggested that I'd identify myself through my lawyer (?), which is costly, not what lawyers are for, and entirely pointless. All in all, don't waste your money on these suckers.

That is very creepy and extremely unfriendly.
Also my payment keeps going up because of shortage of escrow but then they have had to send me money back two years during the last 5yrs. Also they charge for Mortgage insurance even though my payment is made every month before it is due for the last 15 months. I can't wait until I sell my house. I will always stay away from M&T bank. I have had to send a written notice for them not to call me for any reason because I am so offended by the fact they always state that they are there to collect a debt. I had to give them one star to put this review in but they don't deserve one.

My husband has a small business account with M&T and two days ago his ex partner walked into the Rockville MD branch and wrote two checks to himself in the amount of $6450.00, cleaning out the account. Back in September and again in January, the branch was informed verbally and via two written letters that the partner was no longer with the company and to remove him as signer. My husband also provided them a copy of the state document that documented the separation. My husband is the account owner so you would think this would not be an issue right?
Now here we are. The ex partner cashed two checks, one written using the business name and another written using his name as the account holder with the company acct number. And what does M&T say? "There is nothing they can do, he was an account signer and he could take the money without question." Oddly enough, and contrary to what he was told in September, the letters written by him as account holder and owner of the company are worthless because he did not according to them, sign a new signature card. We have filed criminal charges with the State's Attorney and are planning a civil suit against the ex partner and the bank. I hope they all rot.

First you have to love a society where banks purposely bet against homeowners and devise algorithms that predict who will eventually get foreclosed on (toxic loan sales). I bought a house and the mortgage was through Wells Fargo. It was sold to another bank. Then a third, M&T. Never did I want to have any interaction with M&T. I was forced into it when I got my first mortgage bill from them. I have a 5.5% fixed rate. Yet, our mortgage payment continually increases. What started out at 1170 per month is now 1344 - same house, same interest rate. The reason? Not enough in escrow. Yes, right, an extra 2300/year for what exactly? Every single rule is set up to protect banks and screw over homeowners. There is a very serious problem in our country. It is no longer of any benefit to purchase a home. In fact it is more likely to cause negative financial outcomes than positive.
Specific to M&T - they are criminals - stealing money from hardworking Americans who are simply trying to live their lives. I can't help but wonder if our government is simply there to represent us why didn't the American citizens themselves have an opportunity to decide whether or not to "bail out" banks? The system is corrupt and evil and M&T offers perhaps the best classic example of this disgustingly rigged system where corporations cannot fail and homeowners are not allowed to succeed.

Since the checking account was supposed to be free of service charges, I didn't give it a second thought - it would be there if I needed it, and if not, I could just close it out and get my money back. Not quite. First of all, the safe deposit box that I never used came up for renewal at the end of February - even though I opened it in mid-March and paid for a full year in advance. I got the renewal notice on 23 February and had only 3 days to get into the bank and close the box, which had to be done in person. Then when I tried to close my supposedly free checking account I found that very nearly my entire deposit had been eaten up by fees that were charged against it because I never used the account! That following Monday his check cleared and then charges were taken out from the weekend and we still had money in the bank according to the online statement. Well two days later they charged us 5 insufficient fund fees of $38.50 each which brought our account to the negative. He was like "I put a check in the bank first thing Saturday since we were told as long you put the money in within 24 hours or before they clear". This guy got pissed off and basically called him a liar, that they are in the money business. So he pretty much said they are all about managing your money so they can make money. That they lie so you will do thing so they can get money. What a crock, a crap. Then today 10/23/15 they charged us two more charges for charges that have been sitting there since Tuesday, probably because my husband asked "could they charge anymore?" and he said "no not unless something else hits in two days." Well nothing has and they did for something that has been there when the other charges were hit.

Our mortgage loan was bought by M&T Bank after falling behind a few payments this last winter. My husband, who is self-employed, had to have surgery and was off his feet for three months and unable to work. Since this time, we attempted twice to do a loan modification to get caught back up and were denied both times. We were told that we could NOT make any payments while this process was taking place, unless the payment was for the full amount owed. After the second denial, we were told that our loan was going into foreclosure and that we needed to go through the attorney that was assigned to our case. We repeatedly asked for the payoff balance to get things back on track (before the foreclosure had even begun!) and were told it would take days, but instead it took weeks and nobody ever got back to us after repeated phone calls.
By not giving us the balance due, the foreclosure process has continued and now we owe thousands of dollars in additional fees. We requested that those fees be reduced and were told we would have an answer within two days. Two weeks later and the payment is due in full in three days. Not willing to reduce anything, we are having to pay a ridiculous amount to have our loan reinstated. Had this bank just given us the amount that we needed to pay prior to sending it to foreclosure, all of this would have been avoided. The fact that they refused to tell us what we needed to pay and instead went forward with the process without giving us the opportunity to get caught up, which we could have done, we ended up in this horrible situation. I have nothing good to say about our experience with this company and feel completely violated as a consumer. The check is in the mail, paid in full, for way more money than it should have been.

We could then transfer funds as we needed from right online from our account to hers. We have done this for years with Chase and Capital one. Come to find out after being told there were no fees for transfers that there is a $3.00 fee per transfer, plus if using Quicken to manage the M&T account they require $9.95 subscription per month or $119.40 per year to do what Chase and Capital one never charges a fee for using Quicken to access and upload/download to & from their accounts.
But what really pushed me over the top with this bank, was the abrupt and rude customer service workers I had to speak with reached on their toll free customer service line to clarify these fees. I was all but told I could bank elsewhere if I didn't want to pay the fees. I figured I'd go back to where this mess started and called the branch and spoke with the branch manager and explained what I was told by the ass't branch manager when I opened the account last month and what I have discovered since. I checked my account on Monday 9/1/2015 as I routinely do to see which bills cleared only to see all of my money was withdrawn out of my account. I went to the M&T branch in Washington DC 20036 and spoke with account rep about the fraudulent activities. She told me she was going to cancel my card and I needed to come back on Tuesday 9/2/2015 when all the charges was cleared for her to file a claim on my behalf and that I was going to receive a refund within 24 to 48 hours. As of Tuesday 9/8/2015 I haven't received a new card or a refund for the fraudulent charges on my account was posted. I called M&T customer service on 9/4/2015 about my refund and was told the bank is going over the videos and that I was going to be contact via a letter.
I am very disappointed in the way my case is being handled. M&T doesn't value or protect their customers from scams such as what I have encountered. I called back within a week just to be inform that a refund of this sort takes 10 business days and that M&T had send a letter requesting more information. I don't have any other information. I'm looking for M&T to give me more information as to why it was so easy for someone to access my account and withdraw all of my money; I need M&T to tell me why all of their members don't have a more secure and protected ATM cards and machines at their bank locations.
Im sure Im not the first customer to experience this kind of situation. My question is why do we the customer have to suffer and wait two week for you all to try to resolve fraudulent activities because your bank didn't send all of its member a secure card with a chip when you all are well aware of how advanced these scammer are. M&T denied my claim. They just lost a customer and I'm going to make sure to tell all my family and friends and anyone I come across to never bank with M&T. They don't value their customers and doesn't care about protecting our money. This is not the end of this, they will see me in court.

I entered in a loan modification from October 2014. This agreement stated the total monthly payment as of $1994.14 (1,376.71, as principal and interest) + Escrow (617.43 for Hazard Insurance + Property taxes). On 4/30/2015 they sent me account Projections and the projected monthly payment escrow would be $566.96 from June 2015 to May 2016. On 7/30/2015 they sent me a new account projections showing that I have $7,277.81 of escrow shortage, thus the monthly payment increase in $606.48, it means 30 % increase payment shock.
They still are sending mortgage statement requesting payment as of $30,516. Even though, based on the Loan Modification Agreement the amount of $1,376.71 must be applied to Principal + Interest, the monthly statement they sent me did not apply any amount to the principal but to an "Unapplied Funds" something called "Suspense Balance". My property taxes are paid in November and the Insurance are disbursed on June.

I opened my account with M&T in 2007. At that time they had a free savings with the checking. I know this because I have never had money to save, I was a single mother. So there was never a balance nor a fee for the account. Jump up to 2014, I had been out of work and my boyfriend who also banked at M&T decided rather than carry my card with him he would add his name to my account, link to his card so he could deposit money now and again to keep the checking account open. In the meantime, I had to rent my house or lose it, so I used the savings as an escrow account for the security deposit. I noticed though that around the time I deposited money in that account, they started taking money out. I called three times, each time I was told no changes had occurred and I should come in. Well I had been ill but finally went in with my boyfriend over his account issues and did discuss my issue with a manager.
IT seems my savings was to be charged 7.50 a month (no notice to me, just charges) unless I kept a balance of 500.00. I would have closed it immediately. But I didn't know, she credited 3 of the charges and I had that amount in there for the security deposit which I explained to her could not be touched. We had a detailed discussion about those funds and my situation. She never explained that the accounts changed at any point in time, that the savings was also joint (linked) and that since he was having issues with his personal checking that they could take my escrow funds.. which right after crediting me 22.50 in fees, they took everything. It's not even my debt.. and it wasn't my money in that account.
I requested the funds back, both the fees - $82.50 and the amount they took, 501.00, but they declined. Although they did admit nothing about the savings account had changed from the time I had it in 2007. So why then, when I had not one penny in that account.. for years at a time, was I never charged a dime, then in 2014, they decided to take 7.50 a month out for services fees. I provided statements, with no balance and no fees in 2013 and even some in 2014. They changed something, their savings accounts limits, types of accounts, something, but never notified me.
In addition, they have the right to offset, if you owe them money, which is not the case here. I didn't know it was a joint account but ok, my boyfriend's name is on my account. So it's a joint account.. and they waited until his debt in fees was enough to equal that in my account and zero balanced my account out. How is that fair or reasonable? I'm not working and I can't pay that back.. my boyfriend will straighten this out with them. I want them to replace my money. There have got to be some boundaries with these banks. Beginning with this..

I called to M&T's attention that my account was charged for Time Warner Cable Bills in NY and I am a Maryland resident. NOTE Maryland does not have Time Warner. Opening a cable account requires a name, address, social security number etc. In addition to Time Warner my account was used for unauthorized Overstock, Amazon and Victoria Secret over a weekend. All of these charges were also credited then denied. Can I file disputes again and reopen this case?

I thought I was lucky to get there before 5... it would be BETTER if they were open until 6. I moved my accounts FROM KeyBank TO M&T when KeyBank shortened its banking hours. They tried to get people to be okay with nine to three but it really only worked out for retired people. They have since lengthened their hours. Maybe I need to go back there?

M&T obtains forced homeowner's insurance for property owners that do not provide "proof of insurance." In the event of a claim on the property, M&T sends the homeowners instructions on how to handle the claim with its chosen insurer (with the insurance that you are charged for) and a check is written to both M&T and the insured (the homeowner). However, in the case at hand, and I am sure many others because I was told so by M&T representatives, M&T is refusing to turn over the insurance funds because the property is in foreclosure and in an underhanded manner (and fraudulent) keeps the insurance funds to pay down the mortgage, leaving the homeowner to foot the property damage claim or forego the repairs. THIS IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT WAITING TO HAPPEN.
Updated on 07/27/2015: Just got off the phone with M&T Bank. Now they claim that they are looking at reimbursing me for insurance claim that I had to pay out of pocket to protect the real property, but they want to do an inspection first. Nowhere does their paperwork indicate this nor does the forced insurance policy they obtained and billed me for. But alas M&T, this phone call for approximately minutes) is, to the best of my knowledge, the 7th, at some point you are obligated to deal with consumers in good faith, which you are not. You have violated the FDCPA by making it impossible to be reimbursed for an insurance claim with your forced insurance in a money grab to pay down your mortgage in a deceptive manner... You already told me the claim may not be paid because the property is in foreclosure, now a new story on the 7th or 8th phone call?

The charges were $137.82 and the company verified that they reversed the charges. I wrote them a message when my account was credited twice for the same amount for a fraudulent account. I wanted to be honest and make sure the extra money in my account was taken out. The letter was very rude saying that the transactions were processed correctly and my claim was denied.
I admit I was upset. I had just got out of the hospital with thyroid cancer and not feeling well. It seems I keep getting cancer in various parts of my body. I warned the girl who called herself Nora, that I was very angry and knew that this was not her fault but I did need to blow off steam. I repeated this several times during the conversation and apologized for my spouting off. I even said "I would like to find out who made these charges and go shoot them." About an hour later 4 policeman were banging at my door. They said this Nora said I was suicidal and threaten to take a gun and shoot someone because I was turned down for a loan.
Tomorrow I will contact an attorney, close my account and sue this bank. I am embarrassed because my neighbors now think I am crazy and if my place of work hears this I could lose my job. This is not the first time I have had M and T screw up my account but it is the first time one of their representatives tried and maybe succeeded in ruining my life. Never use this bank... ever!!!

I have had a car loan with M&T for 5 years. I had 3 payments left. 3. For the past two years, M&T would "confuse" payments from my husband and I, posting them to the wrong accounts, then charging a late fee to the other one. We sent checks with account numbers in red ink. We sent checks in with pay stubs. We paid online. Time after time, we were reported to Equifax with a late payment as they posted the payments to the wrong account, the one that was current, letting the deadline pass on the other. We disputed the issue and received a letter stating that they were responsible ONE TIME. Finally having enough, I went online, pulled up our two accounts and clicked on my loan. It said "click here" for today's payoff figure on this loan. THIS LOAN. So I followed the link and paid it In full. Guess what? M&T posted the amount to my husband's account and reported my payment as late. Unbelievable.
After calling the Credit/Dispute center I was assigned someone to look into it. She did and told me that their computer showed that I clicked on my husband's loan and posted the payment to that account. They have screenshots? Right. I magically pulled the exact payoff amount for that exact day out of my **. They are refusing to do anything about it. But then I got an email from another department saying my Title was clear and in the mail. So will they fix their error and repair my credit, NOPE. They still say I paid on the wrong loan. To make matters worse, they self monitor. Internal investigation. Their people covering for their people. Recording payments late and scooping up late fees. Sitting on deposits and posting them late. Crooks.

So, they were basically charging unlawful fees to the customers, pretended that they were following the legal order, but not really. The consumer (Me!) end up having to pay at the end! I look at my account online daily and saw the transaction under pending on Monday June 29th, and it was taken out of my account on Tuesday June 30th. I called them on Tuesday to get an update, and the customer service agent could not tell me what had be done yet to resolve this issue. Just the same standard response of 10 days I will receive a provisional refund.
I spoke to the merchant where the error occurred and he had already spoken to his bank about the dispute that was coming from M & T and that the bill was paid with another credit card. So I waited the 10 days (what choice did I have). I just called M & T, July 8th to inquire as to why the funds have not been deposited into my account. This is the 11th day since I filled the dispute. But they only count business days so I asked "Then the funds should be deposited into my account on Friday the July 10th?" Right? Wrong!!
NOW to wait until the 14th to get my provisional credit back to my account. They did not start counting the 10 days until the 30th. I called the merchant to see what was happening at his end. He called his bank and was informed that they have not received any correspondence for M & T yet. M & T are crooks. Problems should be handle in a timely manner. They are playing the float game. Banks can do overnight deposit into the Federal Reserve for very small interest rate. So the longer they can keep our money the more money they can make off of our money. Yes my $1200 dispute is small by itself but if M & T is doing this on a regular basis they are making a nice "free" profit. I will be sending this complaint to Senator Schumer.
About 4 years ago M & T had to change their way of doing business after the government declared their practice unfair. I think it's time for them to look at M & T again. I will be letting my feet do my talking to them also. I will be closing my 2 business accounts and my 2 personal accounts. Active duty military, who applied for a loan through M&T Bank to finance a vehicle. Not only does this company do almost everything important by snail-mail, their customer service is by far the worst I have ever seen. The staff are not knowledgeable, they copy and past responses rather than actually read what you ask of them. (It generally takes around 4 replies to get it through their head what you need from them.) Their company lacks any infrastructure to let you know when important things happen.
You requested that a document be mailed to vehicle registration? That is obviously much too complicated to ask through their "fancy" messaging center. I had to call them, twice. The first time, the lady didn't put in the request properly. The second time, upon my questioning about verification of shipment - MTB does not offer email, phone, text or any other form of notification to let you know that they have completed an action as requested. I was told that I had to keep calling their company to check on the status of a document being mailed off. Really? Just to see if you mailed it? Now, in addition to that, M&T Bank takes anywhere from 3 to 7 days to reply to a message on their website. By phone, you are looking at a half hour to an hour wait, from nice but unskilled workers. By email, the response time is around 2 weeks.
All of this blows my mind. I have never before worked with ANY company that was so utterly incompetent in its own field of work. Since taking up M&T Bank, I have had nothing but trouble. I tell everyone I know (and their mother) to not touch M&T Bank with a 40-foot pole. Especially if you are military. M&T Bank will fail you every time, even on the SIMPLE things - which are exacerbated when you are already pressed for time. If I could give MTB a "no stars," I would. I would even go as far as to giving them negative stars, for having no clue as to what the hell they are doing, 100% of the time. I have not had a single support ticket resolved in less than 2 messages. Will be refinancing after the loan has been held with them for a complete year, so it looks better on my credit report. If I have $20 scheduled to debit from my account on a Tuesday, they will withdraw the funds on Monday and list the automatic payment as pending. I have another automatic payment that was supposed to be deducted on the 15th; however, they didn't debit the amount from my checking account on the 15th and I used my debit card on the same day which I would not have had enough funds for had they debited my account.
I realized that night what I had done and checked my account online throughout the night past midnight and saw that they never debited my account. I deposited funds the next morning to cover the debit transaction I had placed and then saw that M&T withdrew the funds but used the previous date and subsequently charged me an overdraft fee. Had they deducted the automatic payment on the date they were supposed to, I wouldn't have been able to use my debit card in the first place.
It's as if M&T will adjust deductions to your account based on what your current available balance is rather than the date the deduction is scheduled to take place. They will take it out a day or two early and list it as pending if it brings your available balance to a negative but will delay it by a day without a pending notification and give you the opportunity to still use the funds that should be going towards the automatic payment. Either way, they are going to give you an NSF fee.

I am opening a checking account somewhere else. And as far as the credit card is concerned...they can charge it off. Sure it'll ruin my credit but unless I can find a job soon it'll be ruined anyway.

We have been customers for years paying a car loan from M&T bank and the payments were automatically drafted out of the bank. We never were late on a payment and relied on M&T to draft them as they normally did for years. We received a phone call wherein they demanded a payment of over 2K. When I asked why, they stated that we were 2 weeks late on our payment. I asked them why they didn't automatically withdraw the payment for about $500 as they have done for years. They stated that the loan had come to mature and the balance was due (about 2K).
This was the collections part of M&T that has called us which was even more surprising. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. You see, several years back, M&T lied to it's customers by sending out Christmas time skip a payment option, wherein a customer could skip a payment and M&T would simply extend the loan payment out so that the customer would make the payment later when the monthly payment was added on at the end of the loan.
In other words, you would just make that payment later and the interest would add up of course to where you may have an extra payment to make which would be no larger than your monthly payment. Well, we did this about 3-4 times over the years of the loan. M&T mysteriously couldn't locate this option in their records, even though our record showed there was never a late payment and there were no missed payments. This is a classic case of complete incompetence. They also could not explain why they refused to draft the regular payment amount of our bank as they always did.
They also couldn't explain why they took over 2 weeks to call our phone number to advise that they CHOSE not to withdraw the normal monthly payment (same cell phone number for over 8 years!). Rather than M&T make things right by simply taking the regular payment until the loan was paid off over the next few months, they instead wanted us "to settle" and agree this was a settlement and we would pay the balance over the next few months but they would report it negatively on our perfect credit report.
NO M&T, we of course paid the full balance on the spot but I can tell you, We will never do business with them again. This is how they treat customers who have always paid by auto draft on time and never with a discrepancy. These are thugs who are not good at customer service or common sense. Beware, stay away! I plan on advising the VA, DoD, and every military member I know about the business practices of this unscrupulous corporation. They tried to hurt this MILITARY family and they sold out their credibility for a few thousand bucks. Sad, very sad M&T. MILITARY AND VETERAN FAMILIES, PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THEM AND GO WITH A REPUTABLE BANK!

My mortgage was sold from Bank of America to M&T Bank and I had nothing but problems! I would make a payment from my BofA bill pay AND send a paper check to see which one would get there first. M&T Bank "opened an investigation" and after calling them four times to see what they have found... no one EVER returned my call. I have had several late fees with them and have never been late on a mortgage payment before this! Needless to say I refinanced with USAA. M&T Bank needs to take some lessons from USAA about customer service and how to treat customers. I will never do business with them again!!

After 6 months of calling and visiting the bank they finally closed the account and reissued a new one, but will not fix the late payment status and delinquent status they created. The account had an auto payment linked to it from the checking, yet they said it was our fault for not transferring it. They recommended opening all new accounts not us, every time I call them it is at least a 15 minute wait to talk to someone before you get back on hold. What a joke, should I call a lawyer?

Shortly after it was purchased we started receiving phone calls from Bayview Financial requesting we sign a new mortgage agreement which would increase the term of our mortgage. Now for a little over 2 years I have been constantly harassed by Bayview loan services concerning my home mortgage with M&T. M&T transfers my calls directly to Bayview. I have provided proof of payment on numerous occasions showing where none have ever been missed or late.
I have been given multiple reasons and have been told numerous outright lies. For the last year and a half I have been recording all of my phone calls with them. I do not have the extra money for an attorney. I have contacted numerous credit agencies as they have reported me 8 months late on payments. Yet I have never missed a payment. I have all of my records and all correspondence from them proving my story. They have ruined my credit and I have no opportunity to refinance the home because of this.

On Monday, M & T still had not credited the deposit because per the bank, "a deposit does not process until the next business day - in this case, Tuesday." However, they had no problem processing checks written against my account on Saturday and Monday - overdrawing the account. They also had no problem charging my account on Saturday and Monday for non-sufficient funds at the tune of $38.50... 6 times!!! "Open for business" apparently means only "business" that favors the bank - not the customer. M & T stands for "manipulators" and "thieves." Avoid this bank at all cost! After reviewing my M&T account online I noticed my account was negative almost $400. Seven charges totaling over $1000 were made to a Shaklee corporation. I was not notified by m&t to notify me of these charges or that my account was overdrawn. I called m&t and spoke with a representative telling me that they would dispute charges and it could take up to 10 day to see money in my account again. Also that they could not issue me a new card till my card was in a positive balance. This is absolutely unfathomable that a person as this being their only way of obtaining money to go 10 days with no source of income and having bills to pay.
I then spoke to a supervisor by the name of Aris that stated she worked in the Delaware customer service office. She stated to me if I could call this corporation and have them fax some form to m&t bank stating that they would not process the charges I could get my money back. She also stated she tried googling them and she's pretty sure they're a made up company and that there was nothing she could do. I was just going to have to wait For the 10 days but maybe 5 days because she can obviously see the company is not a legitimate company. If that's the case why should it take that long? I received absolutely no resolution that could help me or my family in this situation that I should have been notified of immediately. What kind of bank will not protect their customers? I will be switching banks immediately when this is resolved.

They send someone from an insurance company that acts as a mediator who knows nothing about construction. Does not speak English. Knows nothing about the case and takes picture with a cell phone.
I have call M&T Bank on more than 30 times about the claim and they seem to put you on hold and give you excuses for not paying the claim. In the meantime they are making money with our money. In the course of less than two months, this bank extracted over $5100 in overdraft fees that were not necessary. I was in no way notified or aware of any overdrafts as we had other resources to cover any or all non sufficient funds and would have done so immediately. In a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, the response from the bank said we were notified by mail. I did not see one overdraft notice in the mail. They also stated that the signers were called every day. That is a complete falsehood. When I found out about the overdraft, I immediately demanded to see the manager. My first question was “why didn't you call me.” His response was and I quote, “I have over 400 customers, do you think I have time to call when there is an overdraft?" Not even one courtesy call? Yet the response from the bank was that we were called every day. Completely untrue.
The other question I had was why would they continue to pay over 100 overdrawn checks? Why not stop the generosity? The reason was there was no risk at all, the checks were all covered with the deposits. In some cases they would overdraft the same day the deposit were in to cover them. The bank contends that they did me a courtesy by paying the checks. A $5100 courtesy? There was no risk and an easy way to induce fees. I told the manager he did me no favors and I would have preferred he bounced the first check and saved me over $5000. As I stated we have other resources and would have covered them if we had known. He got very angry and said he would not pay any more overdrafts. Thank you as there would be no more, now that we know. Before we closed the account, we made out one last check that was already made out through this account. They held the deposit so they could bounce the check.
On another matter. We bought a business and the name legally. The former owner of the business has an account there under the name we purchased. We told the manager to close the account as it is illegal. He refused even though he knows it is illegal. The results of my complaining to the BBB is that I can no longer bank with M&T, not that I want to. They did find a bank error in the account and reversed $160. They returned $500 as a "courtesy". My next step is New York financial services and possibly small claims court.

On December 21st, my debit card and other personal information was used by a hacker, or some other thief to steal $296.42 cents from my checking account. On that day, there were roughly 35-40 authorizations that went through in Kansas City, MO, and Canada for a ton of different stores. M&T stopped and killed the card as I was in the store attempting to purchase Christmas gifts, that's great, I thought M&T was actually on my side when I found out my card was compromised. I filed the dispute, the money was put back into my account, and now, I am finding out that M&T is saying that these charges are valid. The charges originated from KANSAS CITY MO. And I was in BALTIMORE MD attempting to purchase Christmas gifts for my daughter at Arundel Mills Mall.
The thief had the first package to my house, I went to the bank and asked what do I do with this as I didn't order it! And now I'm being told because of that $9.95 package (the very first transaction that went through), which I never ordered and again, it was done in, again, Kansas City MO at the same time I was in Baltimore MD, that M&T is now taking the $296.42 out of my account because the transaction was valid. How was I in two parts of the country at the same time? M&T has the IP address showing where the transactions came from, in Kansas City MO. I need help. I can't afford to have almost $300 stolen from me. I have no problems bringing in the police Dept to investigate as I did nothing wrong, and I did not do any of the transactions that were authorized by M&T, and none that were processed by M&T. I have also filed a complaint with the Attorney General of Maryland.

So our insurance was canceled. When we contacted them they said we never provided them with the insurance information. All the information was contained with Bank Of America, they had full access to all of it.
Now a long 2 years later they want to change it again and pay our insurance through the escrow. I called to complain the first time and after dealing with a very rude customer service person, they finally agreed to drop it "one time only" and told me I'd be responsible for a late fee even if there was a hurricane next time. The late fee is almost $50 which is ridiculous.
This past month, I mailed my check on the 12th but it did not clear the bank until the 20th. So AGAIN, I was charged a late fee. They make it almost impossible to pay online and the one time I did, they charged me TWICE which is the reason I mail a check now. I have never dealt with such an incompetent and money hungry bank. When I asked why I wasn't receiving statements, they told me they were being sent to my house and not returned so I must be getting them. This is just the most recent complaint of several bad experiences! The first week in Dec., a day before I was to take a traditional trip to NY, my bank card was denied for lunch!? I called to see why this happened. I was told my card had been compromised in OCTOBER and was cancelled to prevent fraud. Ok first, why not cancel right away? Second, why was I not notified? They told me a new card had been sent in a plain envelope with a letter of explanation back in October. If I received it, obviously, the card had not been activated. Not knowing there was a problem, I wasn't looking for a new card, as I had just received a new card since the previous was very worn. Call me foolish but since I can get alerts for everything, calls and emails about new offers etc., I would assume something like cancelling a card would have the same courtesy.
So this gets better. I explained I was at work, I get off at 5:00, 40 miles from home, about 25 miles from the nearest M&T BANK, gas tank near empty and I leave tomorrow at 6:00 AM for a bus trip and all my money is in the bank. I got 'we are sorry but we can send a new card.' "Luckily" I found a drive thru open until 6:00, I made it by 5:30 anxious but relieved! Until, after explaining my relief and situation, the "kind" gentlemen behind the window informed me they do not do counter checks at the drive thru!! I explained again my inability to get money any other way. He said sorry it would have been best to bring a check with me. Hahaha. I haven't written a check in years so I didn't have a check book. After 15 mins. (not kidding) of banter he leaned forward, looked at me from behind his microphone and said "so exactly how much do you need? I will make a one time only exception but do not expect this courtesy to happen again!" Along with a pulse that would have kept me in a hospital, I finally got MY money..not his.
I had been promised a new card in 3 days which was already inconvenient for anytime, but this was Christmas shopping time. 10 days later and 2 bills that initially showed paid from this account were rejected along with late fees, I received my card! Other than 1 lady at the branch close to me, the customer service in the drive thru and on the phone was at very least, unacceptable! As soon as time allows and I can get a true balance (another story of how transactions get posted then removed), I will be CLOSING this 20+ yr. account!! They may not care that I leave as I do not have an abundance of my hard earned money in there, but I will be happy to NEVER give them another penny for anything! So many more significant stories of ridiculousness but I'll save you reading....just DO NOT BANK HERE!!

I did on 2009. Slipped a few times because of disability and unemployment. Got things under control. 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 - I think I'm finally doing good with having mtg caught up at end of 2013 with even paying my $161.00 escrow shortage. All of 2013 never saw these fees on my statement. Now telling me they will be on my statement until I pay it. Very unfair to come up with fees from 2009 after I get my bill current.
