I had to speak with someone at AAG over the phone to have a consultation, and she was lovely. She was very easy to talk to and to ask questions of and she answered them completely. She made everything very clear.

The process with AAG has been good and their people seem very professional. We had a very good fella to talk to. They want to make sure that we understand everything. The only thing that is a little discouraging was how much paperwork we got. We had like a hundred pages that came in the computer, and it seems like they could have done that in 25 pages but I understand they want to make sure they get all their points across.

The process with AAG was very smooth. We had the counseling session with the gentleman. It was very thorough and informative. Then Anita from AAG has been helping us. She's in Georgia. She’s been explaining everything step by step as we go through it. She’s excellent and very thorough. She's always available. All we have to do is call and she answers our questions completely.

The loan advisor from American Advisors Group called me this morning and I have to call him back to let him know what's going on. He's been very active in calling me. He told me approximately how much money we would get, and so that's really what I wanted to know. I just wanted to see if it was a good fit for us. He put me in touch with groups that I could call to be advised on a reverse mortgage loan so that we could get it going and get it through. I look positive with AAG as a group. So far, they've been really good.

American Advisors Group had me go through a counseling session over the phone for about 20 minutes or so with a gentleman and he explained the ins, out, dos, don’ts and the advantages and disadvantages. It was explained to me kind of thoroughly. Steven was his name. I’m having serious issues and it’s kind of hard to get me set up with the gentleman that’s come out to get the application on paperwork. That was supposed to be at 1 o’clock a couple of days ago. I can’t stay in the house by myself now and my sister was unable to come back and stay with me yet. So, that kind of slowed the process down a bit. Other than that, everything has been fine. I have no complaints at all about the procedure and the way things are going.

Jim tried to do everything he could to help me out. He had a lot of compassion and sympathy for the situation I was in. I just wish AAG was able to get around the Utah laws. Even though my so called husband has no right to the property, because I got it in the estate, he still has to listen to the conversation and sign papers to get the reverse mortgage loan, and I don't want him involved in it. Jim could only recommend getting a divorce in order to keep my husband from having any part in it at all. It's my home, my property, and everything in it belongs to me.

Tim at AAG was personable and gave us all the information right off the bat. So, we didn’t have any particular surprises. He was very thorough and given us good information too that we've been able to make our own decision from. So, we had a positive experience. We finally decided to go with AAG last Monday and I told Tim to go ahead. He has initiated the counseling session that's required and sent us the paperwork that we need for that. So, I'm going to be looking at that information and we'll have our counseling session on Thursday. Then, it'd be a matter of getting the appraisal and getting the actual process going. So, it's not done yet.
We've been at it about three weeks and it’s a reasonable timeframe. Maybe before AAG starts the process though, they could look at Zillow to get an idea of what the house is worth. I had way undervalued it initially and it turned out to be worth a lot more than I thought. So, we set up a bigger loan. If somebody was just starting up, they should check out the value of their house instead of guessing.

My adviser was very knowledgeable and a super salesman. They described the reverse mortgage very early on, so I was getting interested in it. I told them I was gonna talk to my daughter and they told me, “Be sure you don't do anything big without talking to us.” The next time they called, I started bringing up these objections and they were shut down. I was almost ridiculed and felt I was being disrespected. I appreciate that was the salesman's style and I don't hold it against him, but it was a sales tactic. It wasn't advising tactic.
I looked up AAG's website and saw some of the awards they’ve gotten here locally. I had a very good impression about it. I was pleased to find out that they were the largest reverse loan mortgage company. They were offering a service that was needed and I had a pretty good feeling about them. But if they're that good, how come they're using these strong-arm, pretty high-pressure sales tactics? If you have a good product, people come to you. I lost my respect for the company because of those kind of tactics. One thing that was also difficult and sent up a red flag was a request for a social security number early on. But that was dropped.

The AAG rep explained everything. I talked to a couple other ones that didn't explain it the way she explained it. She's been right on top of everything. I couldn’t ask for a better experience. Everything’s been awesome. The counseling was beneficial, too. If we had any questions, he answered them. It was good.

So far, everything seems good with AAG. When I talked to the girl, she said, “Have you considered refinance?” I said, "No. I don't need to continue to see a mortgage running. I like to just get rid of it, for one." Even though it would put me at a lower rate, I'm just gonna have a bill for the rest of my life. I don't want to do that. Then the loan, the same way. This one here, I get an option on it, where if I pay it back, I can, and if I don't, they'll deduct it off the end when the house gets sold.

I'm pretty comfortable with the way things are going with AAG. I've had the counseling done and filled out and signed a whole pile of paper. About a year ago, I became very ill and things started falling apart around the house. By the time I got home, the money was strapped because I spent a month to six weeks in the hospital. Also, we had no money to put a furnace in. My husband and I are getting on in age and we have no one to leave the house to. My nephew said, "Why don't you do a reverse mortgage? So you can get the furnace and get some things caught up." I agreed it was a good idea and we went with American Advisors Group. Their reps are a little wordy. Some of the questions are just yes or no and they go into a long spiel, but they're very informative.

The lady that I talked to at American Advisors Group was very informative about everything that they offer and everything a reverse mortgage does. It was very helpful. That was why I continued on with the process now. She also gave me her business number, email and cellphone number. So, if I had any questions, she said to feel free to contact her anytime. The only concern I had was about getting copies of my social security paper. I called her on her cellphone, and she walked me through it right there and told me what I should be looking for. She told me to get copies mad, and I found it and that helped me out a great deal. She was a great person.

The rep, Kevin, is a very nice person. He’s down to earth, and he explained anything to me and about the interest rates. The house was appraised at 330,000 and I applied for 60,000. He said, “Well, you can get more,” but I said, “First thing first.” I just sent back a report where they did the appraisal.

The rep was very good at what he was doing. The bad thing was we had a bad phone connection, and he was breaking up a lot but I kind of understood what was going on. I felt a little bit of pressure to get it done, which isn't a bad thing if you want something done. But my kids checked with their banker and it appeared that the interest rate was higher with AAG. The individual that I've been dealing with from AAG, John, is a very nice person. He tried to explain, but the thing that I find annoying about it is they give you these stacks and stacks of paper. No one is gonna go through all these forms and even if I could, I wouldn't understand everything. I’d rather deal with the individual, person to person, and ask questions. I told John about it and he's been fully understanding. He's supposed to come over tomorrow for some more asking of questions. I also just received a call from the appraisers and the one thing I did not like was to have to pay a large amount of money for the appraisal over the phone. I'm not used to giving out my credit card number over the phone. I've always been advised not to do that. But there was no other choice. So today, the appraisers called me, wanted their money and they're gonna come Monday or Tuesday.

I'd recommend AAG to someone. The rep was very thorough in explaining how everything worked and the things that we had to do before it could happen. She tried to get us to understand what were the steps in getting the loan and what it was for. We had a little hard time trying to get an appraiser over here though. I contacted her Friday through email and she said that they were supposed to be coming this week but I still haven't got a call yet. Also, the process could be less expensive.

I had a reverse mortgage through AAG six years ago. Recently, my wife's parents passed on, and she and her sister were the only two daughters. I've also been here a long time, and I decided as I watched the commercial and the tape and gave it a shot. The representative I talked to was Jay, and he is A+ on my book. He took the time and expertise to show me what options I can take, and I liked them.
When I caught COVID, I had to go to the hospital for almost 14 days and I told my niece to reach out to Jay. I tried to keep my appointment, but while I was on a computer inside Cedars-Sinai, it didn’t work out too well. It got lost in the shuffle, so we set a date and the reps took the time to do that for me. They were very professional, and I like professional people.

American Advisors Group gave me counseling and sent me lots of information. The reverse mortgage wouldn't be my ultimate way of solving some of my financial issues, but since I have no choice, I'm comfortable enough with the process. Janet, the representative I'm working with, knows her stuff. She’s right on top of things and she's spectacular. If you call with a question, she gets right back to you. When she says she's gonna contact you, she does. She's very good about responding on email. Even just a one liner question, she gets right back to you immediately. She’s good at answering questions to the level of detail that I needed. If she can’t answer a question, which I don't think there was any, she gets me to the right people and explains who does what. Overall, AAG has been excellent.

The notary was here and brought tons of papers for me to sign. It sounded like posey when she was doing one of her speeches. I signed first, then I went back through the papers and read them. There's a part that says I’m responsible for the taxes, which I don’t have a problem with, but it didn’t say which taxes. Is this taxes on the whole amount that they’re giving me or on the evaluation that they've made on my house? Or is it the same valuation that I have on my house now, that I have to pay taxes upon?
The amount they gave for the house that I'm in is 10 times as much as what I’m paying now, and the idea was to get lower on this, not to climb higher. I am having some big doubts, and I don't feel especially safe doing this. I'm too old to make a stupid mistake that's going to put me out of my home. I’ve had to have copies of papers sent to AAG, so I’m slowing the process down that way, because I cannot leave my house right now.
AAG has been fine, but they're doing a job. I know they’ve got to have the answers, and they’ve got to convince me that I need to do this. But I’m looking at the value that they put on my house, which is crazy, and then the extra money that they’re supposedly gonna give me later on. I don’t understand the amount for what I have. What they’re offering is ridiculous.

AAG educated me before they had me talk to a federal government employee to make sure that I understood what the reverse mortgage was about. In fact, the guy from the government said, "The guy really educated you." I said, "I guess he did." I even told him what the answers were before he asked them, because I didn't know what he was talking about. I just told him what the guy from AAG told me. Also, AAG was the only one that followed up and answered my questions. The other person from another company never called me back.
I wanted to get the reverse mortgage because we've been in this house for 46 years. If either I or my wife passed away, Social Security would cover it and we wouldn't have to move. The rep explained it to me very well and I was happy with that. He also spoke about the interest rate and explained to me about the half a percent that the government was going to have for insurance based on the property so that if it was ever undervalued, the person that would be making the loan to me would not be risking if the property became less valuable than the loan was. Overall, I'm very happy about how things are going.

I know she's just trying to get things done, but she was in a big hurry and we almost got into a confrontation.
She wanted some information on my Social Security 1099. She has just found having the 2021 and it isn't available. They have never recorded it. They're just going right on to 2022. And it shows right in my account that. I told her I cannot download it but she wouldn't believe me. I had to call Social Security and they mailed me a copy that I forwarded to her. He sent on UPS envelope for me to return everything. And I took that, had that mailed. So, it has been smooth so far.
I'm waiting for AAG to set an appointment for house inspection. They have the pictures when I first had the first reverse mortgage, but it has been four years so they can't use those pictures. There’s not much change, but the house has a new roof. I understand they need to see the house, but I'm very concerned about COVID. So, I need to talk to whoever the inspector will be to see how we can manage that, whether we can do it through Zoom or how we can do it. I can take his or her camera myself. They can be here outside. And I take the pictures on their camera and give them the camera. Or I could do FaceTime with my own phone.
I've had no one come in the house except once this summer to have the carpets cleaned. And that's how we all are. Everybody is so concerned about having anybody come in to our bubbles. I've talked to AAG. I've expressed that to Joe. He said, “Yes. We've noted that.” And he said, “Now, sometimes what they're doing is just in the driveway.” They're doing them outside like that or on the porches instead of coming into the house. I thought, “Let's figure out something about this inspection of the house.” That's where I am. But so far, I'm satisfied.

I've had discussions at length with the loan officer at AAG, Terry, and she's very knowledgeable, friendly and willing to help. She's got a very good customer service attitude and excellent to work with. She gave me the steps that we needed to go through to do a reverse mortgage. The first step was the counseling that’s required by federal statute. So, we did that on December 8th, which was a couple of weeks ago. I've received a call from Terry, which I have not yet returned. I was going to return that call this morning but we're not moving forward with doing anything until January, because both Terry and the counselor verified that we cannot close on a reverse mortgage until my husband, cosigner on the deed, reaches the age of 62, which is not going to happen until March 21st of next year.
We weren't even going to file the application for the mortgage until January 21st. I remember the counselor telling us that we couldn't initiate anything farther out than 60 days before his 62nd birthday. I was going to call and tell Terry all of these this morning and remind her. Because we had talked about it. I told her that we were going to be careful in the timing of all of these so that we don't make any mistakes. We want to make sure that we can close on the loan between March 21st and 31st so that we don't have an April house payment. If I have concerns, I call. And if I can’t reach Terry right then, she calls right back. Or I can call the counselor at the company that provided the required counseling. Supposedly, we can get any additional questions that we have answered for the next six months. My experience this far has been very good. So, I would recommend AAG.

The representatives were persistent, not to the point of excessive. But I didn't move along as quickly as they would have liked because I wasn't sure this was going to happen, and ultimately, it did not. I had a reverse mortgage before and not everything as I remember is about being the same although I didn't go back and review. It was all of the same information and in my experience from before, I'd get the money in two parts. One, upfront, and one, 12 months down the road. I don't know if that's a recent change, but the part of not getting the money upfront wouldn’t do me enough good. Nonetheless, I was comfortable speaking with them.

Most of the time, American Advisors Group has been courteous and dignified. And everything is going smooth. The only thing that got us hung up is they are not offering in all of their paperwork nearly enough, as far as appraisal, of our total properly. They offered 115,000 and we want to laugh at that. We want or expect 150 or more. One of my real estate buddies said, “That property is worth 150 to 175,000,” laughing at it. We've been living there 31 years. And everything that has been done there, has been done by us.
I have nearly a jungle at just one little segment of my property. I have seven mature Chinese parasol trees, and two dozen that are within 8 or 10 years. So, it's very unusual. Every tree is 10 feet or more before you get to the first limb. If you can buy a one inch round and 2 feet tall, it would cost you $3,300, but you can’t find them. The only place you will ever find them are botanical gardens and zoos. If AAG doesn’t find the appraisal that we expect, or more, then we are going to turn around and give this other company a heavy look.

We were told this it would take about 4 weeks because Dad had a small loan on the house and great credit history. We are in our sixth month and still haven't received the funds we were promised. I got the information they requested together and sent to them the same day they requested it. Now to be fair, 2 of these months were because trying to find appraiser when everyone was getting their homes appraised. Two more months waiting for HUD and other organizations to approve it. The rest of the time has been people losing information or getting the wrong information. All was internal business issues. No one follows up and no one to call to get a straight answer about what's going on. Our account manager didn't know. We contacted his boss and never got back to us. He didn't want to perceive what I was trying to say because he was trying so much to show me the benefits of what I'm going to gain by doing the loan. He was pushy and he really tried to persuade me into making this move at that instant.
In some perspective, the loan would benefit me. But he made us appear and feel like it was such a rush type thing. It wasn't a good first experience. When I talked to the agent, Bonnie sounded a little bit more versed on what all was involved and the considerations that needed to be made before making a decision. One of the things that I missed, and I thought that I had everything covered, was the potential of what it could do for a person as far as if a spouse dies, it could add potentially as a life insurance policy. The other part of this was it could potentially protect against if real estate prices were to crash. Although I don't see that with the socio-economic demand for housing, but if it were to happen, then AAG could get that little extra benefit as well. The number one consideration is if we were to do it, then, we don't have to pay it back. But we didn't think about the benefit of it acting as a proxy life insurance policy or for the other thing I mentioned, which is the temporary devaluation of the home.
I told her that I got to go to the doctor and that she should send me an email with her number on it, then I'll pick up the conversation when I’m free to talk. She followed up and gave us 7 to 10 days to discuss it. So, between those days, ‘cause we had quite a few things going on, she gave a time for me and my wife to walk through the advantages and disadvantages of doing it and whether it was a good fit for us. I didn't get the impression she was trying to meet a quota. I felt like that she was adequately explaining the product so that meant something as well.
We're not completely through with the process. We paid cash for our house. Since we moved in, we’ve only been in here for months, we spent $50,000, so we got our fingers crossed that we will get an appraiser that is knowledgeable and understanding of the market that Bonnie and myself are in. The only thing that would blow it up is if a person would under appraise the house. I'm holding documentation that the house should appraise at around 400, 402, but appraising is subjective and everybody doesn't say everything the same way. If it did not come in around that figure, give or take a few 1,000, then that would make us rethink if we wanted to do this or not ‘cause we might lock in more money into the house. If we do that, then we would have too much value locked in for what could be loaned on the house. In other words, we wouldn’t wanna tap our money.
About two years ago, I had a gentleman come up on the house that we lived in for 28 years and he tried to appraise it for $375,000. I told him he was crazy. I knew that he was faulty. I was trying to refinance to do another project on that home because it was a river home and it was capital intensive. Finally, I sold that for $790,000. If I would’ve bought in on that guy's appraisal that didn't know what he was doing, I would have potentially screwed myself out of $400,000. I told Bonnie I'm not gonna get negative on it because I can't control the appraiser. So, let's just see how everything shakes out and then we'll take it from there. I wouldn't consider it if I had children. But since we don't have, it gives us a little different angle on what we need.

The overall process for applying for a reverse mortgage from AAG was very straightforward. My agent was very explicit in providing me with all of the necessary information, and gave me a lot of understanding of the process. I had undergone the counseling through a third party surrogate, and lt was clear to me l was doing the right thing. I got to the point of scheduling an appraisal on my house, and paid $200 towards the fee. The next day I had something come up in my personal life that made the reverse mortgage no longer a possibility. I called my agent to tell him l needed to stop the process due to a life changing situation. He understood, but told me I forfeited the appraisal fee, even though I did not receive it. So when Tom Selleck tells you to trust AAG, forget about it. They tell you that you have the option of canceling any time, but l found out how untrustworthy they are.

Everything that I checked up on AAG seemed to be legitimate. They totally explained what a reverse mortgage is and it seemed to be the way I needed to go. The rep let us know what was going to go on. We felt comfortable working with her. She also said we had to have the class, it’s either the state or the government requires it for doing a reverse mortgage and we set that up. Yesterday, a gentleman came by and we signed all the papers to get everything going. We're just waiting for her to set up for an appraisal, and then we'll see how everything works out from there. Regarding the classes, they explained everything, what the rules were and what the government expected. They were very informational.

I needed a reverse mortgage and I got AAG. They told me everything I needed to know. I did the interview and I already knew everything that was told me there so that was $145 down the drain, but I guess I had to do that. Other than that, they seem to be doing pretty good. Now I’m waiting for the loan officer to call me back to get somebody to come out and appraise the home. It's going slow. But it is what it is. If I get the loan, it'll be nice. Free up some money.

AAG is so intricate. Two and a half hours on the phone one time and one hour another time, and you go from one person to the next and it goes on and on. You get tired and want to quit. Somebody with a little bit of intelligence could make this thing a lot simpler. Right now, it's so convoluted and crazy that I almost told AAG to stop and then, I told them to continue. Stephen, the rep, was the one who straightened it out for me, which made us feel a lot better. I got the certification and the booklet that AAG sent with 30 pages. But I’d have to get a master's degree in finance and banking to understand that and I don't know why they even bothered to send it.

I contacted several companies and I had the best experience with the person that I talked to at AAG. He was very professional and knowledgeable. AAG has performed very well. Everything's fine right now. But I was a little surprised at how long the process takes and disappointed in the amount of the fee.

We talked to Mario with AAG and he explained the different options we have and advantages we have to it. He was very inquisitive and compassionate. We had issues with some of the things we had to do on the computer. With us being in our upper 70s, we're not that computer savvy. We called him back and he helped us through it. He was cordial, very professional and easy to talk to. He was very patient with us and we enjoyed talking to him. Every time we had a question, we could give him a call and he got right back to us. He told us what the next step was and what to expect. He was very helpful to us. We know we're right going along the way.
Thanks for your feedback. We are happy to hear that you had a great experience.

AAG seemed to have a very good layout of how everything was supposed to go. We went with them and we've had a very good experience with them so far. Our rep is very polite, helpful, and willing to answer any of the questions that we have.

AAG did a terrific job. They sent me to a counselor who did a terrific job as well. My loan officer is professional but he has a sense of humor. He was very easy to work with and it was an excellent experience. His personality and knowledge stood out about him. Typically, I ask him if I have questions and there was one question that he wasn't sure of but he got back to me with that answer. I had made up my mind before I contacted AAG. I had a few questions and they were able to answer them. Now, I feel more than comfortable going ahead with this. They performed very well.

The lady I'm working with at AAG is terrific. She’s knowledgeable and knows that you’re in a priority situation. So, she tries to give you a quick response. Everything is finalized, except me getting my certificate. She said she couldn't do anything further until I get my certificate and they're not calling me until the 19th. I need it done quickly but a part of it is my fault because I didn't want to pay $200 to get a certificate when I could get one for free. So, that's what I'm waiting for. But I don't have a problem with the lady and the only thing I'm concerned about is possibly losing my house with a reverse mortgage. My house is worth a whole lot more than what I'm getting out of it in the reverse mortgage and I would hate to lose it for any reason. And in Florida, a lot of people lost their houses because of the things beyond their control, like acts of God so, I worry about stuff like that.

I was going with another company but I didn't like what the rep was coming up with and I disagreed with it. So I called AAG and talked to Joseph. I felt comfortable with Joseph than the other gentlemen. I was impressed that Joseph was patient, and he listened. I was in control, and he was not trying to force anything upon me. He said, "It's your decision. And whatever you decide is fine. If you decide to go with us, it's fine." He was friendly and very pleasant. I like talking to him. He didn't bug me like the other one bugged me.
The only thing that can be improved is waiting on for the guy to call me for my appraisal. Everything else was smooth. Joseph explained everything to me. Even when he was trying to show me how to do things on a computer, he was patient. He also showed me how to take pictures. The company wasn't happy with one of the pictures we sent for my driver's license. I'm 77 years old and I don't do all the text and the stuff on the phone. So Joseph walked me through how to take a picture of my driver's license on the phone and that was nice. He taught me something I didn't know.
Thank you, Brenda! We are happy to hear that you had a great experience.

John has been so helpful in explaining things. He takes his time and makes sure I understand. So far, I feel confident in AAG. From the first phone call, it's all been good. John has been patient and understanding. He goes through things very slowly. It's not like he's trying to sell me something. He was like a friend or a family member. He helped me do everything I needed to do. I couldn't ask for anything any better so far. Everything's been great.
