Last year, I started with AAG but I didn't go through it. But then I decided to do it because of Tom Selleck. He sounded sincere. When I started applying, I went to another group and compared it and I decided to go with AAG. Jeff is the greatest. I stuck with AAG because of him. He was very thorough and very detailed. That’s the reason why my family and I like him.
Experiences like this are what drive us to do what we do every day. Thank you for sharing.

The loan officer was very nice. We talked about family and how I would be able to take care of myself a little bit better with this reverse mortgage. He kept up with everything. He would call me and let me know. The phone was all the time ringing. I'm anxious to get it done. He was talking about the money I would be able to get. He told me what I could do with some of the money as a line of credit. Then I'd be able to get so much the first time at the closing. Then I’d have to wait a year in order to draw more money to do what I wanna do.
AAG sent me papers to read and then I sent some papers back to them. My loan officer explained everything to me. Then they had this one lady come out, and I signed the application papers for it. There was another packet that he sent to me and the way he explained it to me was smooth. He was right there to tell me everything that I would have to do. It was easy. I would have never thought that I would be able to do it this way, and that it would come out so smooth to where you wouldn't be bumping heads with somebody to get them to help me understand everything. I’m just sitting here now waiting.

AAG is working on my reverse mortgage. I have all the paperwork on it and they said it's gonna be ready 1st of December. It's longer than I thought it would take, but they gave me a fair rate. They also gave me more discounts at my closing. The rep I worked with is wonderful. He gets back to me and knows what he's talking about. I'm happy.

I was looking around and AAG was a lot better as far as the offer for the closing cost. Our agent was really wonderful. She kept up with whatever appointments we have. She was proactive with everything. She gave a follow-up of what was going on. She was really understanding of what we were trying to accomplish and then she gave us choices. She gave us the ability to decide for ourselves. She gave us choices that are in the brochure. She made it clear to us so we could make an informed decision to go through it and what we were going to do.
There was an extensive brochure that was sent first and then we went through the agent. My husband and I went through what was sent. It really gave us a better understanding of what it is. At first, we were skeptical because we didn't really know much about reverse mortgage. But as soon as we talked to Alexa, we were sold right away. She gave a very, very thorough explanation. She was very reassuring and very professional. She seemed knowledgeable of what she was bringing into the table. I recommended her to my other friends.

Things have been going smoothly. I'm just waiting for the final papers. AAG worked right with me. They've been real cordial. So far, I'm happy and everything's been pretty much working like they said it would. My loan officer told me what to expect and all the things I needed to do and the things I needed to provide for applying. I worked with a lady named Tina, and she was always Johnny-on-the-spot, letting me know what was happening. At one point, things have gotten real quiet, but they were waiting for some of the reports to come in.
Any time I had a question, Tina made sure I got an answer. When I was sending her information and it didn't go through, she let me know and we worked out another way to get it to her. I ended up sending it through my Messenger on my phone. She knew all the things I needed to do and if I had any questions, she could pretty much answer them.

I was in a work-related accident and they put money in AAG for me. Then, Riley, the agent, called me from California. He's done everything in his power to get me into reverse a mortgage. I went online and asked them to send information. Next thing I knew, I got a phone call. The guy that’s working with me is real sweet and he calls me and gives me updates. He stays in communication and he explains things to me. He always asks me if I have any questions. I talked to him yesterday because I got a packet in the mail. When they did the appraisal on my house, it was higher than what they thought it was gonna be and so they had to revise the good faith thing. He said we probably wouldn't be closing till the end of the month. I've got two mortgages.
He asked me when did I make my mortgage payments. I told him that I make my original mortgage on the first of the month, and the second mortgage, they automatically take that out of my checking account on the 16th of the month. He asked me if I made my payments this month and I told him I did for the first mortgage but the second one would be taken on the 16th. He said this will be my last mortgage that I have to make and that'll save me about $1,050.

It's a higher rate with AAG than any other home equity loan and it's a variable rate. If it's a variable rate, it can and will go up. And if I do what they wanted me to do, in 10 years, they would own the house. They weren't very upfront with me and their commercial was not truthful. I would not recommend them.

They went into great detail about exactly what they do. They said I could start the procedure and I could get all the way to the point where I got to get the house appraised. If I feel like I don't wanna fool with it anymore, I can just stop and back out. I said, "Okay." They were calling every day with this and that. But then when it got down to it, I couldn't get them to call me back. The last time I talked to Gina, she said it's all great. It appraised for more than what I had told them it would appraise for and that everything was cool. But there was a fire out there in California around her house. She told me another lady's name that was handling my stuff. But I hadn't heard from anybody.

Updated on 11/12/2020: I just wanted to post an update to my review of AAG that I posted on October 31, 2020. AAG responded as noted on this website, to call them and discuss the situation and see if they could fix the problem. Obviously the problem cannot be fixed by giving us a reverse mortgage because of the well situation; however, they could have offered to refund the $125 we paid for the counseling certificate that we never needed. Per their response to reach out to them I did so.
The man I spoke to was very nice and asked what he could do to fix my dissatisfaction. I told him AAG could refund our $125 for the counseling certificate. He said he would look into it and never called me back. Their customer service is all smoke and mirrors meant to look like they CARE (they call it their CARES department). The moral of the story is that as long as everything with your home falls into a "normal" category AAG can manage to procure you a reverse mortgage. But add something a little out of the ordinary, they don't catch on keep leading you on until they finally figure it out.
Original review: In February 2020 we contacted AAG to discuss reverse mortgage on our manufactured home on 1.25 acres with a shared well. AAG agent determined we would need a $290,000 appraisal to avoid coming out of pocket. Appraisal came in at $250,000 which was unexpectedly low. Our out of pocket costs were $625 for appraisal and $125 for counseling certificate at that point. I could not understand why the appraisal came in so low so I personally went through the entire appraisal document page by page, comparing it with the appraisal that was done only 2 years prior when we purchased the home. I found many discrepancies which I reported to Arizona Dept. of Financial Institutions.
Approximately 2 weeks later I received a call from the appraiser himself who admitted that he done the appraisal on the WRONG house. It was a drive-by appraisal (ordered by AAG due to Covid) so other than taking a picture of our house from the road, he never entered the premises. He admitted he was going by the information he had from an appraisal he did a year prior on a house in our area which was much smaller in square footage. He said the appraisal management company would be authorizing a refund of our $625 and AAG would be informed. I had to Email AAG 2 weeks later to ensure they had been informed and were going to approve the refund. At that point AAG did not make any effort to contact us to possibly do another appraisal (on our house) and see if we could get a more accurate appraisal. They just dropped us.
Fast forward a few months when we were contacted by a mortgage broker. I informed them of our experience with AAG but they assured us going through them would be a fruitful experience. Broker sent an agent out to take the application and see the home. Collected documents from us including our shared well agreement. We paid another $625 for an appraisal and this one came in at $280,000 which was actually done on our house because I insisted it not be a drive-by appraisal. Broker had us set up to go through Mutual of Omaha for the reverse but into the process we were informed that the appraisal management company used by the broker but not on their authorized list! Interesting development. So at that point the only other option according to broker was to go through AAG which we were not happy with but agreed to.
Several months into the process in September we were informed by the broker that our counseling certificate was going to expire and we needed another one. We went ahead and paid another $125 because the broker was going to reimburse us for it when the loan closed. I was advised by the broker they were shooting for the loan to close the end of September. On approximately September 28 the broker called with the bad news that the reverse was not going to go through because in underwriting they discovered our shared well agreement included a total of 8 households, which is more than the 4 that FHA allows.
This experience in summary shows that AAG is apparently not aware of the FHA requirement for a maximum of 4 households on a shared well. In the first scenario I mentioned the agent was out to our home, noted we lived on 1.25 acres and were on a shared well. It seems to me that the next question would have been, how many houses on the well? If that had been done, we never would have had the experience with the appraisal being done on the wrong house and would have known right then and there that we would never have been able to qualify for a reverse mortgage on this property.
The same thing can be said of the broker, Loanatik. We were given the impression that this broker did a lot of reverse mortgage loans to where they too should have been aware of the FHA stipulation on shared wells. In spite of that though, it had to go all the way to underwriting at AAG before they figured out there were too many people on our well for us to qualify for the reverse. The broker did not refund the $125 for the second counseling certificate by the way. In summary, if AAG had notified us the first time we attempted to get the reverse that we wouldn't qualify because of the well situation, even after the incorrect appraisal, we never would have attempted to get one through a broker and spent several months thinking we were going to come away with a reverse mortgage.

I am in the process of getting a reverse mortgage and the experience has been fine. I've been working with Anthony at AAG. He's been real helpful and he has answered my questions. They have not yet received the appraisal of my townhouse but they told me that they're gonna be getting it next week. Then, we should have the refinance papers by the end of the month. But if he would call a couple of times as we're waiting and give me an update on what's going on, it would be helpful. It has taken longer than I thought it would but that's okay.
Thank you for being patient with us throughout the process. We’re always looking for areas where we’d be able to improve on, so your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I called AAG to ask for a pamphlet and the person that answered, sounded so nice and so friendly. They explained reverse mortgage by me going through counseling and a lot of talking and a lot of questions that they answered me. I've never had somebody tell me, "You're gonna go to counseling just to make sure this is what you really want.” The person that I talked to in counseling was very good at explaining everything to me. Craig, my loan officer, is a very nice person. He explains everything. He goes step by step, and I have questions. I got a pamphlet in the mail that I didn't quite understand so I read some of it to him and he said, “Oh! Okay, this is what changed. And this is what's going on.” He goes step by step telling me what's going on. He's always texting me every other day to tell me, “Well, we're still here. I never realized the process was gonna be so in-depth but I'm going with the flow. AAG's customer service has been pretty good. I understand the process would have gone a lot faster. But it's the office in Orange County, California that’s taking care of me right now and they're having a lot of problems with the virus and with local Mother Nature factors thrown on top of it. But they're doing pretty good. Shawn is very well-mannered. He acts like he's known you your whole life and he's very confident. The last time we talked, winds were blowing up and fires were not far from him. He said I may end up having somebody from their Texas office to finish this out. I'm not too concerned because he said they have back-up plans for me.

I'm still waiting for the inspection and I'm getting a little antsy about how long it's taking. But that's out of her control. She told me that they were having issues with inspectors or appraisers. When I had questions, I was kind of insecure as to what was going on because I've had other types of mortgages but I had never worked with a reverse mortgage. I like him. He's very personable and knowledgeable. He kinda stuck to the facts of everything. There's no hard sell. There's no pushing. It's not like buying a car. Everything seemed to flow pretty well. I don't think I received much guidance. I just received a lot of facts, pros and cons and evaluating what my decision is. It was pretty much left up to me whether it was a good choice for me or not perfect. So far, so good.

I used to work as a mortgage loan officer, and I was familiar with reverse mortgages. It's exactly what I need at this time. AAG answered any questions I had, which wasn't too much. They directed me to Consumer Credit Counseling, which I'm also familiar with because I used to recommend people to them too as part of my job. They went through an entire session on the phone. It was about a 30-minute phone call. They pretty much read a script, but made sure I was familiar with all of the pros and cons.
My loan officer is a really good guy. He answers my calls, returns my calls and emails, and he's in communication with me whenever I need it. AAG's service is perfectly acceptable. There were just a few minor, insignificant things that happen all the time. The appraiser didn't call me like he was supposed to before we did the appraisal so I don't know what the results of the appraisal are yet. I called them yesterday because I heard they've already gone out. And because of COVID, they can't actually go in the house. I wanted them to understand that this is not just an old house. It's 100% new construction, everything except for the foundations. And even when the foundations had work on it, everything is new. I've already put a considerable amount.
I put my retirement savings, my 401K that I had, I had put in the proceeds from the sale of my mobile home. I've put quite a bit of my own money into it, maybe $10,000 short of finishing. That's why I was wanting the loan. The value of the property is secured more than 100% because it's only like a 50% loan-to-value. He just says, “Oh, this is a 1940, 1,000 square foot cottage.” I only wanted the appraiser to base the appraisal off new construction cost per square foot for new construction. He had already completed the appraisal. He didn't call me before he came out.
I called AAG and I said, “You guys already have the appraisal.” They said, “No, we don't have it.” So, there's a miscommunication somewhere between the two. I don't know who's the problem, but I'm a little nervous. I should hear today what the appraisal came in at. Hopefully, it came in enough to cover what we need. Our market’s crazy right now. Even if they have to reduce the loan amount a little bit, that's no big deal.
I told quite a few people what I'm doing, and I get the same comments that I had from people when I was working for a bank like, “Oh, they're gonna take your house, and there won't be anything left for your kids.” I have to work twice as hard to dispel the rumors and the fears that people have about reverse mortgages, but I recommend AAG.

I've been trying to get a loan. Seeing that I had some collections on some credit cards, no one would give me a personal loan or a home equity loan. I wanna get my home fixed up so I decided to look into a reverse mortgage. When I did, it seemed like it was the right thing to do. It sounded like it's good because my kids don't want the house. There's no one to leave the house to. They don't want the aggravation. They have enough of their own stuff let alone come in here, clean the house up and try to put it up for market or rent it out. To eliminate all those things, my wife and I discussed doing a reverse mortgage and we thought that would be a better plan.
There were times when our rep said one thing that we agreed to. I didn't have all the money to put up for the frontal costs. At the time that we made the loan papers and signed them, he said they would take care of it on the backside of the loan. Then I got calls telling me I needed to pay for $500 for appraisal and I have to pay the notary and the counseling fee. We're on a fixed income and I started paying these things. Then they said I have to pay the insurance and taxes when they're due until we get to closing. I just made a payment for my homeowners fire insurance and it's taken all my money away. Usually, I don't have to pay these things until March. But I had to pay it now to prove to them that I'm paying for these things before we go into closing.
I didn't have money for the appraisal. The rep had to discuss it with his manager in order to see if we could just do this $500 on the back end of the loan. He called me up the other day and left the message to say that he talked to the manager and it would be okay if we use the $500 on the backside of it. But it just gets a little aggravating. I thought it’d run a little bit smoother when he promised that it would be taken care of on the backside of the loan but he's calling me up every other week asking me when can I pay this amount or that amount. I'm having problems with my budget ‘cause I’m on Social Security. Now I have these payment that I have to make.
Hopefully, everything will work out. Right now, we're in the process of getting all the copies ready. We had to wait for Social Security copies and for a Social Security card that was misplaced. We just finally got them and we're sitting down tonight with the printer and starting to print these things off and mail it to AAG. But I would still recommend them to a friend. It's a good program. If you have money to pay for the closing costs upfront, it's not so much of a hassle.

I liked the fact that AAG would take the lump sum of what's left to pay on this, pay that off themselves, it'd sit there and it would give me the opportunity to have some spending money. I am retired and concerned about my finances so I thought of checking into it a little bit more. I was told that they would take care of everything. I've been going to so many different directions but it sounded like a good program where a person doesn't have to worry because it would be automatically paid off by the reverse mortgage. If something happens to me, then my kids can sell that and pay back to AAG what's owed to them. If I decide to not stay here permanently and move on, then I can go ahead and sell it too and pay back AAG for it. I also wouldn't happen to make my house payment anymore.
However, we haven't been able to get a person here to check out the house and make sure it's all up to code with the foundation. They said that they can't find anybody in Oregon. I thought it's kinda strange that they haven't been able to find anybody. That's been kinda bugging me. We're at a standstill on this right now for that mean and simple reason. A person's waiting and waiting and nothing's happening. It's kinda you're sitting back and telling yourself was this a good thing for me to do?

I've got a bill coming up that I need to get rid of or they're gonna jack about $6,000 worth of interest. It was one of those you pay it off in 18 months or 24 months. I wanna get rid of that and then solidify my retirement.
Wes and I have talked about the terms and the interest on it. I also like the idea that I am going to set up where I make a payment every month just like a house payment, but I can make whatever I need to make that month. I like the flexibility of it. We're not totally through it yet. I'm waiting on the appraisal for the house. That's supposed to happen here very soon. It's been ordered. I haven't heard anything negative back from Wes about it not happening. From there, we'll have the closing. One thing you have to be when you're doing things like that is to be patient. Things don’t always move as quick as you want them to. Wes has kept me in the loop and he's given me everything that I need to know at this point in time. Keeping 50% of our $ & that's not even enough to buy the materials for the repair job. Plan to keep the rest till inspection is done once job is complete. (Roof job) There is no way to pay the people doing the work until they get an inspector out here & no one wants to wait on their payment for the job. How are ppl suppose to work in this kind of a deal? They say they will call us back within 24 hrs but doesn't happen. Be leary of a reverse mortgage if you think you will EVER have a claim. In the meantime they are drawing interest on the $ that has been deposited in their acct & here we sit with holes in our roof from a tree falling on it. I’ve seen Tom Selleck on TV for years and it was always at the back of my mind that I may need AAG at some point. It came sooner than expected because I’m on Social Security. I just moved to a new home and found out that my Social Security increase no longer qualifies me for the government tax credit. So, in the middle of the pandemic, I thought of how I was gonna find a safe job and how I was gonna come up with money. When I signed up, the reps were wonderful. I wish everybody had customer service like they do. When they said they were gonna call at a certain time, it was right on the nose. Plus, there was plenty of follow-up.
Jared, who I’m working with, is great. He knows who you are as soon as you call and he usually knows why I’m calling. The appraiser was great to talk to yesterday as well as the counselor. Everybody was great to work with and explained everything well. It’s not the best financial choice but I have no option at this point. I just moved here and I can’t sell. I could sell and pay cash for a double wide trailer somewhere, but that would only help me out for a while. It would be nice though if AAG could close sooner than in August that they were indicating initially on the forms. Jared was hoping to move it along faster and the appraisal report was supposed to be done tonight. So, hopefully, it will get done sooner.

At this point in my life, I feel like I need a little bit of help. When you're working, you think that things are gonna be good when you retire, and things happen. I needed to do a reverse mortgage. I've been seeing AAG on TV, and I went with them. My loan officer has been very nice. He tried to answer every question that I had, and he always returned a call whenever I called him about something. The hardest thing has been trying to get this appraisal set up. It’s been like two weeks since I signed the papers for the first part of it. I guess it was the application. I thought it was gonna be a lot sooner for the appraisal. I was hoping it'd be done by the end of the month, and it didn't happen. With the virus and everything going on, I realized that things are what they are.
My loan officer told me that if anything happened to me, my son would have six months with two three-month extensions, which would be a year, to sell the house or get a mortgage and him take it over. I understand that. When the application was brought to me and I was signing the papers, the notary told me the same thing. But there's no document that specifies that. I asked my loan officer if it was in the application, and he did not find it. I would like to have that in writing. He told me that he would have that for me. That might be something that nobody's asked for, but it's certainly something that they need to have. Other than that, my loan officer did everything that he could do for me right now.

Then, as time went by, I started researching AAG and there were pros and cons to it, but it was mostly pro for me. Also, it was wonderful that AAG has Selleck as the spokesperson, mainly because he was the first one that I took kind of seriously. Not because it was Tom Selleck, but because he was more truthful with what a reverse mortgage was. I'm sure the others were all scripted. He helped me decide to go ahead and do it. But I would like to see the company start using people that have actually done a reverse mortgage.
Freddie, the agent who worked with me, was very personable, professional and knew what he was doing. The process moved slowly enough for me to really think about it. I thought about it before, but during the process, I still had the advantage of continuing to think if it was really what I wanted. When I did a cursory review to see who was local here, I found a couple of local lenders that did reverse mortgages. I had a cursory discussion with them but then, I talked to the people at AAG and they were fundamentally sound and the largest in the business. They have the capital and are not trading mortgages off or selling it. Sometimes, lenders have bundled mortgages and sell it off and AAG doesn't do that. What they did as a business suited a need that I had at the moment and I figured they were the best one to go with. They’ve been very professional about it. The situation was pretty much regulated. There are specific rules that lenders have to follow. I went to the FHA website to check AAG out. They were also listed in HUD as well.
Ann, my loan officer, was very friendly. She was able to answer whatever questions that I had or put me in touch with somebody that could answer. She provided me the material I needed to understand what the program was, how it worked, the process, the people I would have to talk to- like at the FHA- and having to get an appraiser. They're saying the loan is going through, but they said there’s an awful lot of other stuff to be done yet. I guess they haven’t sent someone out to appraise the house yet but all the paperwork is done now.
I haven’t heard from them, but the adviser told me that it’ll take until the first part of May before everything is finished. So we’re not panicking about it. I figure they just got paperwork they gotta finish. I wished the process would be faster. But there’s lots of things going on, and I can’t get a hold of people. They’re not at work and they’ve got problems too. Everything is slowing down right now.

I stumbled upon American Advisors Group when I was gonna go with another company and I was trying to get one of those counseling things set up. AAG hooked me up with Carol and Carol and I had a rapport. I liked the way she explained everything, which made it a lot better for me. She dumbed it down, so I understood it a lot better. It has been three weeks that I've been working with them and now, I'm just waiting to hear from her about the appraisal.

I am 65 and ready to retire, so decided to get a Reverse Mortgage. I started the process with Harvey **. I had been through the process last year with a different company when I was going to buy a house, but backed out of the purchase, so familiar with it. I asked Mr. ** numerous times to please email me my options such as Fixed Rates and different HECM's and he refused to do so. He literally told me what kind of mortgage he was going to give me; I had no choice in the matter. He also very incorrectly stated to me that my home was only worth $400,000, when realtor.com has it's value at $565,000, and I am a life long appraiser, so understand home values. He then stated AAG would hold $65,000 of my money to pay property taxes and insurance and that I would get no cash out.
I set up counseling for today, and this was the first thing the counselor questioned is why he was doing so, and I told her I was starting to work with another company. Yesterday Mr. ** FINALLY sent me the breakdown of the plan HE CHOSE FOR ME, which included ridiculous origination fees (which were much higher than the other company), and again only showing ONE OPTION available to me, even though I let him know I may be interested in a fixed rate option. I guess he thought I would be so stupid as to just sign it without knowing what I would be charged, if I was getting any money out, and him low-balling the value of my home! I told him I preferred emailing questions & answers, but he insisted on only speaking on the phone, and I finally put my foot down as I wanted proof of what he was trying to pull.
I feel he thought I am a stupid old woman; little did he know I am an educated woman who has been in business her whole life, and can see a scam when it presents itself. He claimed he was working in my best interests, but obviously he was only working on AAG's best interests, trying to hang on to as much of MY money out of my equity for them as he possibly could.
I went back to the company I had worked with previously, who is not playing these games with me, and the ball is already rolling toward the Reverse Mortgage option I chose and without having to have them tie up $65,000 of my money for future taxes and insurance; I have a high income and do not need AAG or any other company paying those for me, and Mr. **knew it. Very poor service and I am very disappointed as I always heard AAG was one of the best companies. Please beware. There are different options available to you, and also compare closing costs and origination fees with other companies to make sure you get the best deal; do not settle!

I have been impressed with everybody I've come in contact with regarding the reverse mortgage. Also, the upfront fees were more than I expected, but they are typical. I'm active duty in the military so I live in a different state than my mom, but my father passed away 18 months ago which left my mom with nothing but social security. She's also disabled and she's having a hard time paying her monthly bills. I was pitching in and doing a lot of stuff for her and we started hearing about reverse mortgage and some opportunities. We were scared to go to some of the smaller companies and as I started looking into things on one of my trips, I saw AAG, which we know is a legitimate company. I started researching and I went to the website as well as gave them a call. I called initially to set things up and to make sure that everything was feasible. My mom put the application in and signed it.
I got put in touch with Mr. ** , who was our counselor, and it worked out really well. I talked to him for a while, and it was great. He then called my mom, talked to her and since that call, he has been walking her along the way and touching base with her before they come to an appointment. I send Mr. ** emails once a week to make sure everything is still on track and he responds almost immediately and very professionally, so he is very good. Right now, we're waiting for the home appraisal and at this point, everything has been very smooth and more productive than expected.

We discussed it and she said, "I want you to promise me that you'll go ahead and do all the things that we talked about doing." So, I'm trying to do that.
The loan officer I dealt with has been very positive. She has been very helpful and she explained every aspect of procedure before it took place. She also followed up afterwards to answer any questions that came up during the process. So far, I'm very happy with the process of American Advisors Group. American Advisors Group just seemed to be right there when I looked up reverse mortgage, and I thought I’d go with them. I read some reviews and they all seemed to be pretty good. Everything seems to be going real smooth with AAG. I just spoke with the appraiser and they’re doing a drive-by. Peter, one of their reps, has been wonderful. He’s been really helpful. Any question I’ve had, if I’d call him then he’d get right in touch with me, and he has answered our concerns. I understand things like this take a little time, but it’s moving right along as far as I can see. We signed all the papers and Peter mailed us the package right away as soon as he was able to.
Danny has been on Social Security and SS IRA by $800 a month, and it’s hard to do very much with that. He owns a house outright and he was talking about selling, but I said, “Just get a reverse mortgage and get a little money every month. If you sell the house, then you’ll be homeless and all the money will evaporate right quick. This way, at least, you got a place to live.” It’s really a good option to go in. He would have listened to me back then. He owned 40 acres and a house, and it sold like $400,000, and I was trying to get him to do a reverse mortgage then. He left his old home place and sold that. It’s four years later and he’s broke. It was terrible but at least it bought him a house to live in, and now he can get some of that money out every month.

I started the process with American Advisors Group online and talking with Todd has been good so far. At this point, we’re waiting to find out what he had to say. It’s probably been about a week and a half ‘cause we’ve been waiting on the appraisal to come in. We have already done the counseling and a notary came by and we sat down with him. We went through a ton of paperwork and that was part of the application process. What I understand is Todd received that and then he was going to contact an appraiser. I did the application, but AAG started calling back too soon, even though I told them I needed time to think about it. After I told the loan officer that, some man called. He must have been her supervisor. He rattled on and on. I felt they were being too pushy and didn't give me a chance to think so I abandoned that search with them. They are competitive though. The AAG rep promised me the best deal and I found out that I can get three times what he offered me. I don't like being lied to. He was full of crap. "Oh, I'm on your side and we're in this together. I'm your partner," and all these baloney. It was just too much. He told me, "This is the best deal you're gonna get. I tried,” like a used car salesman or whatever. "Well, I talked to my financial group" or whoever he talked to. "I got them to give you this deal." It was just so full of it. But I got a good education and I have something to compare it with. Now, I have somebody that I trust and it definitely is for my benefit because I'm going to get three times the amount. I was very disappointed. I know Tom Selleck is not actually selling the product. He's just a spokesperson. But people trust him, especially older people that remember him and think, "Oh, Tom Selleck." They were smart to do that but I'm not that dumb.
Reviewed March 4, 2020
I've watched the Tom Selleck ads on TV but I didn’t contact American Advisors Group until I saw it on Facebook. I came to a point where I had some unexpected large expenditures and rather than increase my home equity loan, it seemed like it was time for a reverse mortgage. I feel good about my decision and I'm looking forward to closing so that I can get on with life. Anthony, the rep, was great. He was always easy to reach, he explained everything thoroughly and he was very helpful. I tried through my credit union to get information about getting that reverse mortgage with them, and they were not as helpful and they were more difficult to reach. Whereas, Anthony was there all the time I needed him.
There were more costs than I expected there to be, but AAG is still better than being tied to a home equity line of credit that would take me years and years to pay off. I wanted to get rid of that financial stress. I don’t have any heirs to speak of, just nephews and nieces, and so using the equity of my home instead of scrimping and saving and praying it'll last till the pay date next payday seemed like it was time to go that way.
Anthony reassured me though that they would never sell the mortgage and that they would service it until I passed and yet, I just signed some documents yesterday, and one of them was that there was a possibility that they would sell the mortgage. So, that made me unhappy. Also, they’re using the title company that is owned 49% by the president of AAG, so I wasn’t sure I liked that because I don’t know if he would be likely to charge more than a local title company would. Even though I won’t be paying the cost because that would just be added to the principal loan amount, still, it means that I will have less equity if I ever sell the home or because I need to move somewhere else for my health. I would see until the loan closes and I'll find out whether or not it still goes as smoothly as it has been going.

We started fixing the home before the situation came up. We have a new roof, new siding, and a new deck. We've got a carport and we're putting on a wall so that it can give us a little bit more protection for the cars and what's inside. May turn it into a garage. We put a lot into it, but it was the income tax that I had to pay that hurt me, which was $41,000. So I thought, "Uh-oh, I need to stop." I still got my Social Security coming through, but it's low. And they have to change that because they tapped it according to what I got from my company for retiring. Well, all that retirement has gone to pay and I was going to have a cushion, until 41,000 hit me.
I had a friend actually who had gone and done a reverse mortgage and he kept bugging me about it. Finally, I said, "You know what, I think I need it." So that's when I decided to do it. I did some research before I talked to AAG, and I wanted to make sure and go through it. I found it to be the best resolve for me. So I contacted AAG and Robert was the person I got. He has been absolutely great. He's easy to get ahold of, gave me all the answers and was thorough about it. I needed that, so that helped. He didn't push me in anything. He was very polite and told me things that I didn't know. If I didn't know what that thing was or what it was I thought I knew or I didn't know, he just made sure I understood.
I've gone through the counseling and signing the papers. The appraiser is coming tomorrow and then we'll do the final papers. I got something from my mortgage company and they're trying now to get me to go with them, but I'm not going to, because I don't want to go back into that situation. I did a Google search on the best reverse mortgage companies and I went through Consumer Report. I also did some research with AARP and with our HUD counselor. They had a list of reverse mortgage companies and American Advisors Group was at the top. So, we decided to go with them. My dad just passed away on October and it helped to know that my mom wouldn’t have to be putting out that amount of mortgage since her income would be cut in half as she would not have my dad’s security anymore. And the payout at closing really helped. Our rep, Jared, was good at explaining how the reverse mortgage worked with the interest, the home equity line of credit after the first year and how it builds on it, and that she can draw from it. He was very kind and considerate, too.
Aside from that, Jared was really good at answering all our questions. I tried to come up with as many of them as I could because I’ve heard both good and bad about reverse mortgages. In fact, I was talking to a friend the other day about it and I told her that we talked to our counselor like we were supposed to and he had no claim to any of this. He was just really good at walking me and my mom through the jargon and putting it into plain terms rather than just talking over us like some of them do so much. It felt like he was really on our side and that he was trying to do what was best for us and not just make money, which was a big selling point for my mom. We understand that they need to get something out of it, but the big sell was they wanted to help people to be able to stay in their homes.
I also liked that the rep gave us the three options for the fixed rate versus the variable interest rate. There are two types of variable interest rates and he was explaining the differences as well as what would be best for us. He didn’t try to push us into one or the other, and what he said would be best for us was the same thing that our counselor told us would be best for us. And that really made me feel good that he wasn’t trying to pull our leg. Other than that, our representative was very conscientious about what my mom’s going through. He was gonna call in one day and he called me first. Then, when I told him that she was having a really hard day, he was very understanding and just told me to let him know when he could call and talk to her.

I had a line of credit that was coming due and I didn't know how I was going to come up with an extra $300 a month. When I saw the American Advisors Group commercial, I thought that I would check them out to see if it would be good for me. Any time I had a question, Aileen, the lady who took care of me, was always able to answer it. AAG had done a good job of getting everything that I needed done, like getting the appraiser to come out. Moreover, everything was done at a good rate of time and I'm very happy with it. I'd tell others to call and talk to an advisor. They'll sit down with you and tell you everything that you can expect, what a reverse mortgage is, and how it's done by HUD.

About five years ago, I very vaguely looked into reverse mortgages. I was curious what they were. Then several years ago, I had taken most of my money out of my retirement to pay the house off. I thought that I was living on a fixed income and could live very comfortably month to month on that. I also had enough to put in a small amount in savings.
I went online to AARP and asked them some questions about reverse mortgages and different companies. They gave a list of companies and they talked about the pros and cons of the reverse mortgage. AAG was one of the ones that they listed as being reputable. That, combined with the advertisement I saw on TV, made me think to call them and see. Then, I never went anywhere else simply because I was very pleased with them.
The appraiser is coming out next week and the appraisal makes a huge difference. I get tickled at Angelica because she keeps saying she thinks the house will appraise for a certain amount. I just laugh and say, "It won’t. You don’t know Bella Vista. Appraisers are notoriously lower than what most others would be.” And she'd laugh and say that we'd cross that bridge when we get to it, but we’d keep our hopes up and hope they give us the highest appraisal they can give.
Angelica's knowledge and her willingness to listen to my concerns and my questions impressed me. And if she wasn’t absolutely certain of an answer, she'd tell me that she would get back to me and she did. She’s also very personable, made me feel like I was an individual and listens very well, which is unusual nowadays. She was also able to allay my fears. If I do it, it's on me. I don’t ever want my children to be burdened financially with anything. I have no idea whether I’d use the money or not, but it gives me a feeling of comfort knowing that it’s there if I need it.

I've been dealing with Bill and I understand that he's off sick. I left two messages Friday with his supervisor, but he didn't call me back. Since then, I've been trying to reach someone. Yesterday, I reached someone and talked to a Thomas. He informed me that with my concerns, someone would absolutely call me before the end of the day, but they did not.
I needed to get ahold of American Advisors Group because I've already had the debt consumer person talk to me and mail me a certificate. And although they have sent it to Bill Brown, I had to ask them to send it. They told me they would anyway, but I had forgotten that I was supposed to sign it when the notary came yesterday. When the notary came, I could not find it anywhere. He told me that he felt sure that they would need to have that at the end when we finalize things. So I tried to contact someone again today. I called Bill's number and got the same message. Finally, I called his supervisor and got, "Leave your message."
I called customer service back and said that I needed to talk to someone because they needed the information in order to proceed. She said she would send an email to Bill's supervisor, who called me back after she sent the message. I explained to him what I needed and he assured me that hopefully, Bill would be back in the office the following day. I also had some other questions, but he that he had about five minutes.
I understand that they were really busy, but this was my pertinent information and I needed to tell him too. It was why I went into a panic on Saturday. I had received a foreclosure notice from the mortgage people's lawyer and desperately needed those two issues. I also had another issue I needed to discuss with him about the homeowners' insurance, but I couldn't reach anybody. I felt like I was left holding the bag. I'm dissatisfied, but I'm really hoping that he will follow through with Bill contacting me tomorrow so I can go over the stuff with him. Bill was very knowledgeable in telling me all the stuff.

I was looking into doing a mortgage with Discover Bank and my brother-in-law said, "You know, they're not the only ones out there." That got me to thinking, and then I got an email about the AAG, so I thought what's the harm in just asking for information? And so, I did and I got a callback within less than an hour after putting my information in. And they have rolled on this so much. It was November when I talked to Antoinette from AAG and the process was rolled right along. With the Discover Bank, I started this process in September. It is December now and they are still horsing around. With Discover, if they sent somebody out to do an appraisal of my house, they never set a time, they never came inside, nothing. At least, with AAG, they've had an appraiser come in and take pictures so they could appraise the house.
On top of that, Discover Bank decided that they had to pay off all of my creditors like my credit cards and my student loan. That was their choice, not mine, and so, I was gonna end up with $30,000 and that was it. I was gonna have to pay them $805 a month to pay them back. With AAG, after having talked to Antoinette, “I can pay if I want to, I don't have to” kind of a thing. And I've talked to my kids and decided that AAG is a much better way to go than the other one because with the other one, I'd be in the same boat I was in. How do I save up the money that I need to save up every month to pay the big bills like the taxes and the house insurance at the end of the year? I need to put so much away. If I'd be paying the Discover one, right now it's really great, but when it got down to the to the tax bill, I wouldn't have anything put away. This is why I'm hopefully finishing up with AAG.
AAG reps are awesome. If you call, they call you right back. I feel much better working with Antoinette, especially with the notary coming out for me to sign all of that stuff, and for an actual assessor to come out and actually look at the house and take pictures. And so, I told the Discover people I didn't wanna pursue it. AAG has gotten to the point where I've signed a bunch of documents in front of the notary and they've had the assessor come out. The assessor has to do their thing and get it back over to Antoinette and then we're into the closing. So, for less than a month, we've gone a long way.

I paid my money already and it’s gone through, and I have not heard one word from an inspector. I talked with my loan officer and she said that they have have assigned somebody in my area. My wife and I are both in our late 60s, and we just thought reverse mortgage would be a good way to use some of the equity in the house. My wife looked up several companies online and AAG was the one that she felt most comfortable with. We had a lady in California by the name of Kim and she has been wonderful. She has answered all of our questions and as things are moving along the process, she has been almost holding our hand every step of the way letting us know what to expect. She told us that we would be getting a call from a reverse mortgage counselor. We got to pick one from several of their reverse mortgage counselors and he answered all of our questions.
So far, we’re still in the preliminary stages. We just signed the application yesterday. Their reps have been very professional, have answered questions and have spoken in languages that we can understand so that there’s no confusion. And every time that we’ve had a question, everybody’s taken the time to answer the question until we were satisfied that we know. AAG performed excellently. They have been prompt. And anytime we’ve had a question, we can call Kim. She’s in California, so we just have to be aware of the time frame, but anytime we have a question, she’s right back at us. And they follow up on things. The counselor that we spoke with, he was from Massachusetts and he explained things extremely well. They let us know that, “This could happen. This could happen. If you did this, it would lead you this way. If you did that, it would lead you that way.” So, everything was explained up very well.
