Within a day of writing this review, the Neat company reached out to me and resolved the issue. The customer service I received was excellent. I think that customers who use Neat products still need a more effective way of communicating with Neat representatives when issues do arise, but overall, it's clear that Neat DOES care about customer service.
Original Review: Jan. 20, 2015
Overall I was fairly satisfied with the Neat Connect scanner. However, I am completely dissatisfied with the company's customer service. When I purchased the scanner, I decided to try out the Neat Cloud service by signing up for the free 30-day trial. After using the Neat Cloud service for a couple weeks, I decided that I could still enjoy all the benefits of the scanner without paying for Neat's cloud service (you can use the scanner to send pdf's to google drive, dropbox, etc.).
I tried calling every customer service number that I could find for Neat, but I was not able to speak to a single person that could help me cancel the trial. When I called the customer service number, one of several things would happen. I would input my phone number and email address only then to be told that I did not have an account and then I would be disconnected. I would be placed on hold and would never reach an actual person (I waited for over an hour on two separate occasions).
After trying yet another phone number I found online, I did finally speak to someone, but the woman on the phone said she could not help me with canceling my free trial. She said I would have to call the same customer service number that I had tried calling multiple times already. I explained my situation to her and she said she was located in the "East" and was not connected in any way to the department that could help cancel my trial. I have tried sending emails to the company but have not yet received a response. I think this is a classic example of "bad business" and based on my experience (or lack thereof) with Neat's customer service, I cannot recommend any products from this company.
Rachel,
I apologize for the issues you have been having trying to cancel your account. I will have one of our billing representatives give you a call directly to resolve this for you.

I have been using the neat scanner with quicken for a couple of years. Although it is cumbersome, it has been usable. Recently, I started getting these annoying dialog boxes when starting the Neat software wanting me to upgrade. I ignored these for a long time but finally (because they were annoying) I tried the upgrade. That was the beginning more annoyance. First their system would not recognize my password, they sent links to reset the password but the links just took me to a site directing me to a "free trial" of a system I did not want any part of. Now every time a start a new scan I get another annoying dialog box trying to force me into one of the monthly fee programs. I am about to abandon this $400 machine because of the annoyance of it.
The case you submitted, 194409, has been updated and we sent you instructions on resetting your password. If you need further assistance, please let us know.

I signed up for the cloud storage, but then my data went missing. I have tried numerous times to contact neat receipts by email & phone but to no avail. Finally got a sales rep who said I needed to upgrade to vip support. Despite doing this, I have still not heard anything. I am close to $400 out of pocket with nothing to show for it. Neat receipts is an absolute rip-off. Seeing that I cannot use my neat connect at least refund me what I've paid for without neat receipts providing any service.

I had the Neat Cloud and scanner for 3 years. During this period countless documents were lost. I stopped using it after the 2nd year and switched to Evernote and the Evernote scanner for which I have been very pleased with both service and software. I was charged this year on my business account $149.99 from the Neat Receipts company. I tried to call to cancel and was on the phone for no less than 4 hours. Each person I spoke to put me on hold for over 30 minutes only to come back and transfer me to another person who put me on hold even longer.
When I did finally get someone, they told me they canceled the service, which they did, but failed to refund my money. I also brought to the attention that on their website the Neat Cloud was much cheaper than what they had charged me for over 3 years. The person told me that was a mistake and he would refund me the difference as well. That never happened. I am out the money and the service, have been overcharged, lost my data, and cannot reach ANYONE at this company. Why would anyone want to do business with this company??? The representative I spoke to is George **.
Marie,
I apologize for the issues you have been having getting your money refunded. I will have one of our billing representative look into this and reach out to you to help you resolve this.

The only contact means to Neat Company is Support which presumes you need more help using their ridiculously difficult system and therefore to bend you over for more fees. In my case I was double charged. Attempting to resolve this, I called their number (866-632-8732) six times. The last one told me to call the same number again as if I was on another number. The run around is what it is. Neat products are for full time accounts, not the Saturday morning bill payer. For Saturday only users, startup will take two hours and the level of frustration will ruin the whole weekend.

I was so excited to be ordering a Neat Scanner for our business. I ordered online and received a confirmation of the order, but for some reason did not receive a confirmation of the shipment information. Finally, I just called NEAT to find out about the order. They have very limited hours so you cannot call them in the evening or weekends. When I was able to call them, they had told me that the scanner had been delivered.
I was very upset as we did not receive it, although UPS had indicated it was left on our doorstep. This was during the holidays and it could have been stolen, although I did receive all my other Christmas presents left on our doorstep by UPS/FedEx and USPS. The representative, "George", sent me an email of the shipment confirmation and said that I could reply to him for further information. He said that he was going to put in an inquiry to UPS and they would more than likely ship out a new one. He would let me know. It has been two weeks, and I have replied to his email inquiring the status. He has not replied. Luckily, we ordered with American Express, and we were able to have the charge removed from our account. I'm so disappointed in NEAT's very poor customer service, and the difficulty in reaching them.
Sonya,
I apologize that there has been an issue with communication on this case. I have looked into this issue for you and it appears that UPS denied the claim to replace the shipment. I have asked one of our support reps to resubmit the claim to get more information on as to why it was denied. I will have the representative follow up with you once we receive more information.

I have owned a Neat Mobile scanner for many years now. I use it simply for scanning documents to pdf files while travelling. Today I attempted to connect it to my new Windows 8 PC. I didn't have a driver, so I looked on Neat's website. Guess what - no "driver download" links anywhere. Tried phoning support at the number shown on their website (couldn't find any email address for support on the website). Kept hanging up on me or telling me to try later. Found another number by doing a Google search. Spoke to a nice fellow who knew nothing about how I could get the drivers but told me just to download the Neat software because it came with the drivers. Went back to website, tried to download software but had to first set up an account and answer a dozen questions. Finally got the s/w downloaded then had to enter another dozen questions to install it. Installed it, but couldn't get it to scan anything and if drivers were installed they weren't apparent and the scanner would not work with Adobe Acrobat.
Bottom line - what a disaster of a company. Wasted 3 hours this morning trying to simply get a driver installed to use this scanner on my new Sony notebook. Finally gave up and went and bought a new portable scanner. Do not buy anything from this company - they have no customer service and no decent website support for simple driver downloads. They are a complete waste of time. Bad, bad, bad company.
Fred,
We do not have a specific download for the drivers because the Neat scanner is designed to work directly with the Neat software. It is not setup to scan through Adobe Acrobat. You can use the Neat software to scan directly to PDF: http://www.neat.com/helpcenter/scan-directly-pdf/

I like the machine from the Neat Company. Even though I’ve had it a while, I’m trying to get acclimated to locating the folders. I have 150 on the thing and I need to consolidate under the general categories like auto repair, recipes, because stuffs are helter-skelter. I can find stuff by just scanning it, but it’s a little time-consuming, so I’ll just have to figure out how to put the new folders exactly where I want. It definitely is something that takes some getting used to, but it definitely keeps stuff organized much simpler and easier than a manual file system or an old hard copy system.

I first heard about NeatDesk on TV. I was trying to figure out an easier way to make my tax man not to pry so much when I give him information. I just haven't quite figured out how to organize everything yet but he wants everything in an Excel program. Neat doesn't really do that but I pretty much use it everyday -- I get receipts every day so I feed them in. Same thing with business cards... I just feed them in there too.
I'm not making it everything it can do but it works for me. The only reason this thing isn't moving is because I can't make it move in some way. If I had more experience in that area then maybe I'd more than likely use it a whole lot more. Right now I'm learning how to print out reports to separate stuff.

I got my Neat Desk as a gift and I use it once a week to scan documents and receipts. It doesn't do exactly what they say it would but it does allow you to separate it into different categories. Their customer tech support or the support that they have is pretty awful. You call them, ask questions. They don't really answer the questions for you. They're not very helpful.
When I wanted to get the bigger scanner instead of the little one, they tried to play games as far as gouging me with the price. So I told them I could find it for a cheaper price online. Then they lowered the price even though I told them I already have the scanner and the software. And I found out that I'm not the only one. I've talked to the people that have their product and dealing with them has not been very good.
I just wanted to know how come the software wasn't doing the things that they advertise it as being capable of. People that answer the phone really don't know the software that well and some of them don't even use it themselves. So it was a bad experience. Anyway, if you need a scanner, it's okay. But there are better scanners out there. I found that out, too. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't buy them, but it was a gift for me. I would not buy a Neat.

I like the way NeatDesk works. My wife worked for a medical official lady who owned her own business who had NeatDesk and my wife came home and talked about how great it was. Even though it's probably a lot more than what we needed it for, it would be something that as the company grows we could build into it so we thought it's worth the investment to get it because it would help keep everything organized especially since we're a new start-up company where it's just her and I. We needed help to get everything organized and to keep paperwork together which is easy to lose. NeatDesk has been fantastic because even if I lose the paper I can always go on it and I've got a copy. As for the Neat Cloud, I'm not putting anything out there. I prefer to keep my privacy.

They tell you lies when you're trying to buy it from them. They gave me a cash price on it but it ended up charging me the full price that they would have if I was getting it off credit. They just keep lying and when you ask a civilized question, they won't answer. They said I could send it back within 30 days. I told them I'll send it back to them. They said, "oh you cant do that". And they don't speak English, to top it off with, so they're hard to understand.
I haven’t used it in a month or so. It’s aggravating because it don’t put them in the right places or the right dates. I used to use it to scan the reports in it from the handicap I take care of, the medical records and stuff, and I wanted to use it for my business also but it got me disgusted. And then it says it stays on your computer but no, you’ve got to pay an extra $14.95 a month to have it on some file. And then when you try to download it back, it tells you it takes three days to get it downloaded. Ridiculous. Also, when I installed it, it went out within 30 minutes and it took over four hours for them to get it back up.
I’ve watched it on TV for about three years before buying it. It said that I could store my files and I got eight file cabinets full of files so I decided to get one because I needed it, I thought... They got them on sale now, $200 off. I wouldn't buy one if they gave it to me again.

I saw a NeatDesk advertisement and did some research on it because we got tired of all the clutter and paper. Now, anything we buy we just scan it in there and then we just toss the receipt away. We have a receipt bin and, either at the end of the week or end of the month, we'll take all our receipts and scan them there. It separates everything - gas receipts, food receipts... It has been a really great tool. It's a really awesome concept that they came up with.

Ever since I installed the NeatDesk onto my laptop, I cannot scan documents on my printer. I can't figure out why my computer won't download the driver to scan because I can only scan one document at a time with Neat. It won't attach them all into one PDF file and it freezes up if I scan more than three pieces of paper at a time. We're a trucking company and we have three trucks and I have thousands and thousands of receipt that I have to keep track of and all the stuff that a trucking company has to keep track of. I bought it for all my receipts because I was putting it in a spreadsheet on Excel. It was primarily for our business. I don't have time to restart it every third receipt when my driver comes in. I've spent three days trying to figure this out, uninstalling, reinstalling, and being frustrated, wanting to throw it across the room. What I don't like is it doesn't do what's advertised. I cannot make a report. I would have to have a separate receipt for each thing that I put in. We have so much paperwork and I wanted to eliminate clutter. Then, I heard about NeatDesk from an infomercial. It helped me keep everything in one place, and I can easily find anything by searching keywords. In the couple of companies I worked for as administrative assistant, they used something similar, the Fujitsu. But I know that the Fujitsu is very, very expensive. It’s like nearly $2,000.
I’m currently still in the process of catching up with all my paperwork so I use NeatDesk around twice a week or more. I use the features for scanning and organizing receipts or documents. I also use the Create Contacts feature. I haven’t used the features for creating reports yet. All the paperwork needs to be in there first. That’s to come useful later. And, I haven’t tried using the NeatCloud mobile app either. We don’t really need that at the moment. But eventually, we probably might. Overall, I’m very pleased with NeatDesk. I started doing bookkeeping for a local company here. This job here was supposed to be a temporary job, but it turned more or less into a fulltime job because it was taking so long to do the weekly receipts. Then, I heard about NeatDesk from a TV commercial. Using its scanning and sorting features, I found it a whole lot easier just standing and letting the receipt put itself in the specific folders, than having to try and figure out what each one was and manually typing it in. NeatDesk helped me get the receipts scanned in a small period of time. I love it!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to use NeatDesk for the reports. I would have to have all the information from my employer as far as bank statements and all that, and I didn’t have access to that information so my job was mainly scanning receipts in and then putting it in the cloud and he would do the rest. My only issue with it is the synching. I was having problems getting whatever work I did on the NeatDesk to transfer over into the QuickBooks account. And so, I’ve still got all that work on my computer waiting to be transferred over while I’m trying to figure out how to do all these. I contacted tech support for both companies and neither one of them could help me think them up.

Overall, it was a positive experience. I did have to call a few times asking that they extend the 30 days because you have a trial period of 30 days and it wasn't long enough. The trial period starts when you ordered it and I didn't get it for a week. And then, it just wasn't enough time to explore whether it was something I wanted to keep or not. And then, something else happened with the cloud thing that apparently I was supposed to cancel and I didn't know. It came with my free 30-day trial. It was a trial to use the NeatCloud. And I didn't notice for a little bit, but I had two withdrawals from my checking account of $15, around $15. And when I called them, I kind of had to press my case to have them take it off. The fact that I never used the cloud feature was what helped me. And finally, they cancelled it and they gave me a credit on those two months that they deducted it from my account.

Overall experience is satisfactory right now as I’m still learning it, so I'm still learning how practical it’s going to be. I wanted something last year for organizing taxes and keeping track of my expenses. Then, I saw one of the hundreds of commercials Neat Desk Scanner used to run all the time on TV. It came in handy because I didn’t want to have to scan, and organize the scans into files. With Neat Desk, once your files were setup, it was just more convenient.
I was using it often last year. I just used the basic feature. I set up a file and scan it. I wasn’t using Neat Cloud. I don’t know what other features there are, I’m sure there are others, but I never got that far into understanding what it can or can’t do. This year, I haven’t spent much money so I’ve just been collecting the receipts, and I’m planning on scanning them all at once.
In terms of organizational benefits, it was a lot easier for me to take a compilation of all the stuff I scanned and send it over to my accountant. The only issue was if you sent over a complete file it gets to be lengthy. And you couldn’t send it through regular email, and I would have to create a generalized spreadsheet from all the cost. You didn’t need to have the receipts much but I sent my accountant a couple pages where there were major receipts like county taxes and license plates. But all the other little receipts of purchases, I didn’t send that to him.
It’s a good product and if you add a couple other things, it would make it ideal. I was having issues when I was scanning and it was infuriating. I would scan something and it’d give me a certain value. Sometimes, it doesn’t do a good job reading the numbers or the dates. So I would place that in there and then it would just change, and I always had to keep an eye on it. It would change something and I had to go back and change it again, and it would change it again. Why is this doing this?
I noticed too in some detailed receipts, such as pharmacy receipts that has language written on there, it locks up and doesn’t do anything. You have to turn everything off and start over. I know the limitations of the system. I’ve managed to work around the glitches. At first, it was frustrating and time-consuming, but eventually I fell into a pattern. It worked out all right.
These days, somebody can probably come up and engineer and design something a little bit better, cause it does have glitches. Tell your engineers not to sit on their butts. They need to fix these issues so they would have a great product. Then it’d be worth the money. You are asking a lot of money for that product. Honestly, a lot of people told me that you’re wasting your money and your time, but once I got my mind set, I went with it. I’d say for the $400 I spent, it’s really worth like $150 cause of the issues with it.

I first heard about NeatDesk on a TV ad. I needed a Neat Scanner Because my desk is not neat. I tried it a few times when I was trying to do my taxes. I tried to scan a bank statement and it didn’t seem to do anything but give me a picture of the bank statement. Most of the materials referred to online tutorials and stuff. Maybe, I’ll try it again, but it didn’t seem simple or easy to get to customer service.
At the time, I was trying to get my taxes done and there’s obviously a deadline. I didn’t have a lot of time to fool around. I tried going through a few of the things and it just didn’t seem to meet the expectations I had from the TV ad or the website. I just think the Neat Scanner takes a lot more work than they tell you. Ultimately, it seems like I would have to spend a lot of time planning how I would categorize things and to manually associate things on a piece of paper with this digital file, which it wasn't clear that this would save me any effort.

I’m doing pretty well with it but I know it can do a whole lot more. I got it so that I can integrate it with a lot of other software - accounting software, tax-wise. Overall, it's a good experience.

We actually have purchased three NeatDesks and they are working awesome. We love them. I first heard about the NeatDesk being advertised over the Internet and TV commercials.
We know we needed a Neat scanner since we started going paperless in the dental office and we needed something fast and efficient and small in order to get documents into the system to be electronic. We use NeatDesk all day long, at least 10 hours a day. We scan into the system. We use it for insurance cards and any paper documents, scanning them indirectly into our computer system. It’s just able to get it from the scanner into the computer system and everything is completely organized. It puts it all into one base folder, and then were able to add it to whichever patient in our system we need to. It’s awesome.
We have heard about using the NeatCloud on the go, but we don’t do a whole lot with the cloud. We only scan just minimal things into the computer system because were just trying to go paperless as much as possible and the less paper to scan, the better. But in the future, if we would need it, we were definitely open to trying that, just not at this time. I had one issue with them with one of my scanners that was having an error. I called in and whoever was on the 1-800 number was great and helped me fix the problem right away, so no complaints from our end.

NeatDesk had a lot of glitches. I probably would have return it if it wasn't past the time. We’re working through it. We haven’t had the time that we probably should’ve spent with it, but there’s been a lot of hang-ups. I’m not crazy about it. I thought it would be easy; it’s not easy. I thought it was gonna be simple. I thought you put the stuff in there, it would put it in, and you would be able to locate it. With NeatDesk you have to spend a lot of time setting it up and then we have had the glitches. That was disappointing.
When I first got it, the support told me that I could set it up so it would go into Dropbox. It won’t do that, it gets an error every time. We've called Customer Service. We found out it's because you can’t set it up in Dropbox; you have to set it up on your C drive. It’s a pain in the butt to get it into Dropbox and have it work. I think it’s a great concept, but it needs some work and it needs some communication with the customer. I spent a lot of money on it and it’s just sitting here.

I thought about it for quite a while and I know some people that has it and I decided to get one. Overall, I like NeatDesk. I like how it’s set up and how it works. I use it every weekend to scan, save and set up what type of document it is and if it’s going to be taxable or not. I just go ahead and set up my files and put what I want to put in each file and be done with it. And then, I usually export my PDF files also to my laptop so I have copies of those files.
The only thing I don’t like about it is it’s slower than a regular scanner. Once you scan the document, you end up stuck in there for a minute or two until it goes through, before you can do what you need to do... In addition to that I think someone could help out that it be more tailored to the veteran. I’m a veteran and I do a lot of my medical through the VA and as far as statements and stuff like that, I have to go in and change everything because I don’t think Neat knows how to address certain government forms and statements...
Overall, I don’t regret buying it. All the other features about it, I actually love. I think it’s worth the money, although it needs a couple of improvements...

I had a good experience with my NeatDesk. I've been using its scan to PDF feature. Primarily, I bought it for that purpose; multiple sheets into a PDF and to scan checks, deposits and what have you. There are some little issues. I understand sometimes the paper crinkles or I may have it in crooked. I had a couple of problems with what I thought was a clean sheet of paper. Sometimes it pulled in crooked and then it bent a corner on me, and then it jammed up. It was easy to unjam, that feature was very good. I turned it upside down and fed it in the other way and that seemed to work. It corrected the image right side up the way it's supposed to. It skipped blank pages the way it's supposed to so it's working there. But I was disappointed that I could not put in a business-size check other than putting it into the full 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 wide slot. If it looks like they set it up for a regular 2 1/4 receipt that comes out of a cash register but not checks. It will be better if the slot were just a little wider. On the next version, they could put them in there.
I did talk to somebody at The Neat Company and they noted it on a service call or something about the way that it sets up on your computer. Like you put five or six files into My Documents folder, and I realize I can establish a new folder. No problem reading the PDFs. I've put about 200, 250 documents through it so far. Thank goodness I have the Neat scanner to scan everything. Overall, I'd say the experience was good. It's reliable. I like the way the machine recognizes it right away. When you boot it up, it doesn't take a while. I was happy it's better than average, but I don't think I'd put it at the top.

But we really like NeatDesk. In fact, she works for another person too and I'm not her primary employer. And she said, "I really love yours, I need to get one myself". Well, anyway, as far as that, it sounds like that its really being useful because I'm eliminating paper every day. And so, we're quite satisfied with it though.
I would recommend it. This product, it not only appears to be really great, but even people who have not embraced the Computer Age, if they've got a neighbor or a friend or employee that they can direct, then it gets rid of people that would have paper accumulation that can't even use it themselves. NeatDesk offered a free trial and I can return it if I don’t like it. So I tried it and remembered to return it but it took a whopping 140 some dollars out of my checking account. And it doesn't do what they do on the TV. It is a lot of work. It was exciting for the first three days to learn it. You learn that whenever the receipts go in, it doesn't actually take that thing and store it in your provided categories. It doesn't itemize it out. You have to do that. I’m still dealing with receipts. In other words, there’s no such thing as a Neat machine for dummies. All it is technically doing that another computer doesn't do is the divider tray which is for business cards, receipts, and documents. That’s the only difference. It just doesn't give you enough information and also, it doesn't work with the Microsoft Surface 2. You would have to go buy the $800 Surface Pro in order for the Neat machine to work. It doesn't work on a standard tablet. It has to be on a $900 or a $1,000 tablet in order for it to be efficient.

I have NeatDesk installed on both my PC and my Mac. It’s an awesome scanner. I have scanned things in and realized that I’ve had to verify amounts in particular where it might misread an amount because of clutter on the receipt. I'm a bookkeeper and I had heard about it from a client, but at the time it was more than what I wanted to spend on a scanner. More recently, though, I had a client that I do work for who told me that he had bought the NeatDesk and that I would be using it. Right now, I use it on a weekly basis, for scanning purposes. I look forward to whether or not it integrates with QuickBooks. I'm a member of the AIPB, American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers, and there have been discussions about scanners and their ability to export transactions into QuickBooks.
Its Cloudfeature is neat. You can use your camera, take a picture, and integrate in. I have not tried that yet, as I’m not a big fan of the cloud, the reason being we see organizations come and go that had online services, integration services with QuickBooks, accounting software. If they go out of business, where are you? So I don't know that I will use it in the cloud. And when I installed NeatDesk on my Mac, it synced up and shifted my folders from what had been under my folder to my husband’s folder so I wasn't impressed with that. But so far, it's extremely easy to use, easy to create folders and easy to review. It’s a reasonably priced scanner for all the features that it has: digital recognition, like whether it is a business card or a receipt. I love the ease of use, the clarity that it provides and being able to customize your own folders. There are a lot of features I like and I really look forward to becoming paperless as a result of the NeatDesk.

I don't remember how I learned about it but I'm glad I did. I started with the receipts for tax purposes and then I started to get rid of some of this paperwork that snows on me every once in a while. That way I can push through it. I have to develop a system so that it could read and can tell itself where to put it. I haven't done that yet. That way all I have to do is stick it in the machine. It would be great if you could just put a code letter or something at the top of the page and it'll tell it exactly where it would go - one or two letters in large print. That's my next step.
I use it every day. I've used it for organizing and paperwork. In all our wisdom, we're moving toward a paperless society and then some invented a high-speed printer and now we're inundated with it. It is so much better compared with my previous method. I have a lot of archived material and I'm moving to put it all in under the system. It makes for a more efficient system. You can get more done because you don't have to spend so much time hunting for stuff. Another feature I like about it is it does double-sided quickly. It's a five star machine.
