I've been a NetSpend cardholder for years and the treatment I just received from them was horrible. Your money is not safe with them at all, no matter if you file a dispute or have all the evidence to prove your case. They don't care what you have to say, they just won't give you back your money. I paid for something online & the money immediately came out of my account a few days later the merchant took more money out of my account for the same item. I called both the merchant as well as NetSpend & both of them on the line together. The merchant sent a fax over to NetSpend telling them to release my first payment but NetSpend never did so the merchant then took out more money again because each time a piece of the order was shipped part of the money was taken out.
I filed a dispute sent in all my bank records of the merchant taking out the money as well as NetSpend sending me a email saying they received the fax from the merchant & will release the money to be but never did. It took NetSpend 45 days to tell me they aren't giving me back my money because of whatever the merchant said to them. When the merchant isn't the one necessarily wrong its NetSpend because the merchant told NetSpend to release the funds & they never did.
I called NetSpend after getting the conclusion of the dispute & they didn't want to hear anything from me and they wouldn't listen one bit. Netspend then went ahead and removed off of my statements where I paid the $135 on November 29th when the money came out right away. There's no way that I shouldn't have gotten my money back, so I lost out on my money and I have nothing to show for it. So I paid $135 twice for items that only cost $135. I'm highly upset at NetSpend and the level of customer service. Don't get NetSpend at all. It's not beneficial to you.

I love my NetSpend card... It has been a lifesaver! I wanted to get rid of the typical checking account because of several issues I'd had with my bank holding deposits and putting through withdrawals first. With my NetSpend card, I can have direct deposit and it can also be used as a credit card to make purchases online or reserve motels. I've had to call customer service on several occasions and they have always been more than helpful and always friendly! I even had an issue with my card being compromised, and they were quick to get me out a new card and fix the issue! I would definitely recommend NetSpend to others!!!

The first prepaid debit/credit card was Ion Visa. It changed to NetSpend. NetSpend prepaid debit/credit cards are better than sliced bread. It has a very low maintenance fee, no late fees, no overdraft fees, can be used everywhere Visa is accepted. Excellent customer service & great benefits depending on where you load money on your card. I would be lost if I had to totally give up my NetSpend Debit/Credit card. I don't have any need to carry cash on my person. If I do it's very little.

Had their card over a year without issue, however my wife used it to place an order, found an additional charge and called to see what it was. Service rep reported card stolen after he was told multiple times not to (since the card contained all her business funds), refused to let her talk to someone else and actually started screaming at her on the phone. Now her funds are blocked and she is being charged for a new card and activation fees. This is ridiculous.

I obtained a NetSpend card because of the easy direct deposit (and having the $$ in my bank a lot faster). The service is great. The only downfall is if you have to file a dispute for any reason it could take up to 10 days for a provisional credit to be applied, and even that is not guaranteed so if you have any suspected fraudulent activity that you report, you could be without access to cash for a period of time.

I tried to add a 2nd cardholder onto my account and within an hour my account was locked. I was told to send verification documents which I sent, still nothing was fixed. I spoke with 5 different, hard to understand/comprehend reps that all told me the same thing but none would transfer me to a supervisor or higher up. I have had my account for over 5 years and receive my social security deposits in it. Now my deposit is going to be lost or rejected and who knows when I will get it. In August/September of 2014 I ordered a new card and the same problem occurred and after a week of calling and emailing I finally was contacted by the right department and my account was corrected and the block removed. If I can't get this fixed I will be contacting an attorney or legal aid and the BBB. This is ridiculous that adding a cardholder would cause my account to be closed.

Dear Debra,
Thank you for your feedback. We do understand your concerns with our fees associated with your account. Do keep in mind that we do offer other plans that do not charge you per transactions, but monthly. The only reason we will charge a monthly maintenance fee is because the account has not been used in 90 days and this is placed to keep the account open. The item wasn't in stock so we had to start the reimbursement process of my money, you have to provide a cancellation notice from the vendor and they will credit your account in 6 business hrs. I forwarded 7 cancellation forms that were sent to me by the vendor to the documents department, NO! So documents department doesn't want to release the money, at this point it's been 2days 7 texts to the documents department, they responded with disrespectful comments, they play with your money.
I'm a retired nurse and have never encountered this form of fraud. I've contacted my States Attorney's Office along with the Better Business Bureau, come to find out that this particular department is being investigated for questionable business practices. I closed one of my accounts with NetSpend and I was upset about that because I had that account for over three years, and I didn't feel like I was treated fairly. A loan place had taken money out from my NetSpend card and they weren't authorized to do that. It was authorized for me to go in and make the payment, but they took it off anyway. If somebody took from me, I would want my money back. It's not like it was a $300 or $500 transaction that I was trying to get back. It was only $114 that was taken away from me. NetSpend honored one charge but didn't honor the other charge. I called some people and talked to them. They understood about one charge but didn't understand the other amount which also came from the same place. That didn't sit right with me, so I said, "Forget it. Just close my account completely. I don't want it anymore."
And then, I got a letter in the mail saying that if I needed any additional information on why they made the decision that they made, then I could contact them. But I had already requested them to contact me, and they never called me back at all. When I was at a gas station, I didn't get any gas. They've caused me to be low on my bills and I didn't like that at all. As far as the years that I've been with NetSpend, they've been good. But it's just that particular time that I was not satisfied with them at all.

I heard about NetSpend when I did TurboTax, probably like two, three years ago. TurboTax recommended it and it’s been the easiest thing because I didn’t have a bank at the time. I could just deposit money and when I have to pay a bill, I can just pay a bill. If I needed to find my routing number, I could go online. I don’t have to deal with so many people just to get what I need. Also, they sometimes have offers that if you spend for Subway or Mc Donalds, then you get money-back rewards and they’ll send you an email telling you when you’re going to get it back. I can use it for anything that you can use a regular debit card for.
I used direct deposit because I worked for The Gap, and that was also good because I could get my money a couple of days earlier. But now that I work for a private organization, I just deposit money and pay my bills with it. Reload locations are really close. You can look online and they show you a lot of different places. You could go to a gas station, or a check cashing place or go through 7-Eleven. It’s really convenient. There are some little perks that I don’t like too much. Like the fact that I can’t call somebody right away if I have to dispute, it has to be done online or it has to through email and they’ll call you right back, so that’s not so bad. They do respond really quickly when you send them an email. But it’s better than a regular bank for me.

It’s been very convenient to use my NetSpend card to pay bills and make online purchases. I use the direct deposit, and I have used the reload location and it’s not hard at all. Every time I call their customer service, I get somebody who doesn’t speak the same language as I. I wish they spoke English. Other than that, I don’t have any complaints.

I have been with NetSpend for over five years and the way I have been treated the last two days is unacceptable. I had an unauthorized charge of $1200 on my account and I contacted them immediately to report the incident only to get the runaround. The transaction took place on the 25th as today is the 27th and I've called 6 times unable to speak to a person who can handle the dispute. I have contacted the merchant who agreed to release my funds back and still to no avail. It's very frustrating knowing that a substantial amount of money missing from your account means nothing to NetSpend.

I've been using my NetSpend card for 10 years and everything works great. I can reload it and have my deposits directly to it. I can use it like any other card to go to hotels, order stuff online, or transfer money. I have three older kids who are always needing money and I can deposit directly onto their cards, which is real simple to do. All of my kids have NetSpend and they immediately get the money. I can also go to any Walmart and withdraw whatever money I want to or reload it. They charge me a fee to reload but it's no big deal. It's like having a credit card without having to pay the interest rates and fees. I just pay the $7 a month and have unlimited access.
The customer service team works great. They're overseas but very business-like, easy to understand and very quick. A lot of times I'll check into a hotel using my NetSpend and when I check out, I call NetSpend and have the hold that they placed on my card removed. And they always do so right away and instantly I have access to that money. They're easy to work with. I have nothing but good things to say about NetSpend. They even came over and did a TV commercial about me.

I've been with NetSpend ever since they came out and I've done all my banking through them. However, I had a big problem with them in December. I signed up for what I thought was a student loan forgiveness type program and I was supposed to give them three payments totaling $700. The first payment was $200 and some odd dollars and the student loan place took it out the day before Thanksgiving.
A couple of days later, I tried to use my card and it was blocked. Then the loan place attempted to take out a second payment two days after they took out the first payment but they couldn’t 'cause the funds were not there. Then I called NetSpend and they told me it was a phishing attempt on my card. They said somebody tried to use my card number at a hotel on Thanksgiving. With that and the combination of the loan place that tried to take funds out, they canceled my card. I had a replacement card which I activated so my pay from work doesn't get delayed. NetSpend told me that they tried to send me a card a couple of times but it never came.
The student loan place attempted to refund $231 back to my NetSpend card twice but they couldn't do it because the account was cancelled. I have three accounts with NetSpend so I asked them why they didn't put in into one of the other three accounts and they told me they don't do that. The student loan place had to mail me a check.
I talked to at least five operators and nobody from NetSpend could tell me what was going on. They have a lot of foreign employees who work for them and they either don't speak proper english or don't understand the situation that I'm trying to explain to them. They ask me the same question but they presented it four different ways. Finally, they put me in touch with an American supervisor and we were able to figure out what was going on.
The combination of that $231 missing and my card getting cancelled, all of it was a compound within two weeks. It caused my light and my gas to get cut off and got me evicted. But nobody from NetSpend or the student loan place cared or can do anything about that. Both companies kept blaming it on each other. It was 50-50. First the student loan place shouldn’t have been trying to take payments out two times within a week when I cancelled the loan. On NetSpend’s end, they shouldn’t have taken a week for a supervisor to tell me that the account was canceled. That last month from the end of December to the beginning of January was ridiculous. Other than that, NetSpend business has been perfect.

I needed the ability to have a bank card that wasn't associated with a major bank, and with better customer service representation, so I contacted NetSpend. My NetSpend card allows me to see exactly what my balance is. The checking account gives me a text message on every spend. Therefore, it helps me keep a very good accountability of the funds that are available. Overall, since using the card, I experienced better money management. In addition, because it’s a VISA card, it allows me access to every place I need to be. I use NetSpend's direct deposit option more frequently. I rarely use the reload location, but they’re readily available.

I've been a NetSpend customer for about eight years. I began using the card right before I started receiving disability so I wouldn't have to worry about a paper trail. I have chronic pain and memory issues so it was really helpful. I have been an excellent customer and since I'm on disability I always pay my loan back between the first and the third.
But a couple of months ago my due date was put down on a different date. I wasn't feeling well that day and I didn't even notice that that had happened until I got a text saying what the due date was. This happened only one time before because another person was new but the manager quickly corrected it for me. But this time when I called to tell them, they weren't willing to work it out for me. I was really hurt about that after being a member for so long. So it's not good and it kind of put me in a bad position. I had nowhere to go with that so I tried to do a monthly payment, which was cheaper, but now it doesn't work and it's all so messed up. It was very disappointing that as an ACE Elite member I was denied an opportunity to have this issue corrected.

First I would like to point out that this is not a credit card and that any monies on the card are 100% owned by the cardholder. You also are required to pay a monthly fee to retain the card. That being said, I noticed a charge from a company that I previously made a purchase from, but had not made this additional purchase. My first thought was to notify NetSpend. I then emailed the company from which the charge originated. By the next morning I received an email from that company telling me the charge was reversed and credited back to my card. That same day I used my card to make a purchase and it was declined?! I immediately checked my NetSpend account for messages and learned that the way they "Helped" me was to report my card lost/stolen and freeze my account.
They then reported that they would mail me a new card that would arrive within 10 business days. I responded saying that was totally unacceptable and that I needed access to "My money" today, not in 10 days because that card held not only money that I had to pay a fee to load on it, but also my child support was direct deposited onto the card as well. Their response was that they were unable to reactivate my card and that (once again) it would arrive within 10 business days. They never bothered to contact the company that I claimed made the charge, nor did they contact me or give me an option to possibly pay out of my own pocket for expedited shipping. All they did to "Help" me was cancel my card. So now I am left without access to "My own money" for up to two weeks. So beware that if you use this card you better make sure you have other cards or cash on hand if you ever have to make any type of inquiry/claim.
Hello Rensje,
Thank you for your feedback. We regret to hear about your experience with our Customer Service Team.
Unfortunately if we are contacted by the card owner in regards to an unauthorized transaction, for security purposes the card is blocked. Deactivation will ensure that there is not any additional funds debited from the account.
When the card is blocked we issue a new card for standard shipping, which is the 7-10 business days. Based on your account type, if express shipping is available there is a fee that applies. If you were not offered express shipping we do apologize for the inconvenience and if there is anything that we can do please do not hesitate to contact us at social@netspend.com.

I like the fact that I can let my financial aid and my SSI come on there. It's faster than coming in the mail, so I don't have to worry about waiting on a check. It also comes a couple of days earlier. I have told lots of family members and friends about it and a lot of them that have a NetSpend card. I use the direct deposit and its process is easy. I wanted to have a debit card because I didn't have one at that time, so I went with NetSpend. I am retired now and I get direct deposit, so I get everything earlier than what I'm normally supposed to get so that makes me able to pay my bills better. There were only one or two times that I wasn't able to use it because they don't accept the debit card but I finally got them to accept it after six months of dealing with them.
My daughter is also on my account and one time I had an alert on my phone that some gas was bought which was unusual for her to use my card to do anything without her telling me. So I called her and she said someone broke in her car and took her debit card so I figured somebody used it. I called it in and they took care of everything right away. I've called them on numerous occasions and it was always a pleasure. They always fix my issues or explain it to me. So I've never had a problem with them at all. Then the people they hired for CS is pointless because obviously they don't know what they are doing. How does one leave a call back number, but I can't talk to them when I return my call? I got to direct deposit and then they removed me two or three months with this. They didn't even notice me. I just found out when I needed and by that time then, I had to suck it up.
But I like the in-house way of sharing money with our family and friends. That's a neat feature. I love it and had shared it with my friends and family. I tell everybody to get on it to utilize it. And one thing I would like, since we signed up to be with NetSpend and we're customers, and I have on going direct deposits is to get a waiver without having to pay check-cashing fees. I've had several disputes on transactions that come back declined but are still deducted from my account and when trying to resolve it's always pass the buck. It's not that Netspend's problem. It's called the other companies. The surcharges for every transaction is absolutely ridiculous. I was not made aware of it until I called to complain about it to the tune of $100 and surcharges every time I use my card. There's absolutely no type of help understanding even when I explain to my closing on my accounts and over $100 credit on charges that were declined but still went through that they were losing my direct deposits to the tune of $5,000 a month.
They're idiots. They read off scripts and have no power when you ask for a supervisor. It's a joke. You're told that there are none around. I would highly recommend people staying away from this company. I also have a Brinks card that is a prepaid card and they are absolutely wonderful and an Insight Card where they're a great company and have had no issues with either one. Horrible company. I was surprised to see it isn't an actual scam. They send unsolicited credit cards, complete with a brochure of "terms" and fees, claiming that someone "indicated an interest in receiving them", give a phone number to opt-out of future mailings, but when you try, you get customer reps in an overseas call center who say they can't opt-out anyone without the card number--which I fear they will attempt to activate. Then they asked for a mobile phone number, which was REALLY out of line -- this was sent to me via direct mail. I'm sure not giving them my mobile number or any other personally identifiable information. I told them I shredded the card already, and they say there is no way to opt-out of receiving their mailings without it. In other words, false claims on the mailings.

It’s worth having the NetSpend card. I know exactly what I have because it's prepaid versus a credit card that charges me exorbitant fees if I went over and I work within that budget. Then when I use my card, it gives me an alert. The communication is very good between the client and the bank. I also love that I get my government check three days earlier than everybody else. However, the fees vary from 7-Eleven to 7-Eleven. Some of them will only be $2.99 and some will be $4.99. The fees could be cheaper but they’re not exorbitant. Other than that, everything is smooth and I'm very happy. I like my NetSpend card and I don't think I'd have any other card.

I've used NetSpend since 2004. They're good for sending my taxes and my payroll. I have been with them for so long that at one point, they didn't charge me $1 every time I use my card. Then, when I got a new card, they started charging me again. They also wiped out the premiums then they charged them back again. I like the service, however, it changes a lot and never stays consistent.
I had a complaint the first part of the month where they paid two things that came through my account for $101.12 and $101.51. Even though it said from two different companies, it was the same company. The first guy I talked to told me that they could stop the payment but I had to call the company first. He gave me the phone number and told me what to ask for. When I called the company, the lady said she had no record of me so I kept digging. I gave her my card number and she said she still didn't find it. So she went in another way then came up with the order and asked me if I lived in Long Beach. I said I didn't so she said she found an order number that paid for $101.12 and $101.51 but it said Sharon ** on it. She gave me the address and all this other stuff then told me that she'll email me all that information. She then told me I could file a complaint a couple of days later but the payment was still pending.
So I called NetSpend back and told them that it's unauthorized. I asked them to stop the pending payment and not to pay it but they didn't do that. They kept asking me about the products but I told them I didn't get any because I didn't order them and my card was used without my permission. But they said they had to pay it because they got a pre-authorization code. I told them it was a fake code but they still paid it. So I had to fax all my stuff to them, the operator number and information that I got from the company. But if that was my bank, they would have put a claim on it, stopped it and reimbursed me within the hour.
Now I'm waiting to get my money back. But in the meantime, this situation derailed my bills that came through the card to be paid and two of them got sent back. NetSpend also told me that they're going to send me a new card. So I have the same account number that allows my Social Security and my payroll to continue to come to the new card. But they paid out something that they could've stopped and I didn't like that at all. And that's not the first time but the second one. The first time I didn't get my money back and if they don't give my money back this time that's it with NetSpend for me. They told me by the 10th I should hear something.
Other than that, I've never had problems paying my bills with my NetSpend card. And I started doing automatic payments because they do better than the bank. If there is no money, they charge me no fee. But when I have an unauthorized payment to something and they won't correct it, that's my problem. It shouldn't be a problem because there's so much technology now. Also, they're not saying and in no way guarantying me that they'll give me my money back because they said they have to get it back from the company first. We caught the thief before they gave the money to them and they're going to give it to them anyway then ask for it back. I don't think that's going to work. So I'm not happy with NetSpend right now.

Very dissatisfied with the customer service. I had money pulled out of my account on a card that I had reported lost and you guys left active. Well I reported the withdrawal done without authorization in a minutes of it happening. I explain that I had just done a transaction in my hometown and 7 minutes later the transaction in question was done in a town 3 hours away driving distance. Well they gave me the story that they had to investigate. I said what is there to investigate if the transaction according to the rep was done on a card I had reported lost and that NetSpend kept it active. Well they were real rude and when ask to speak to a supervisor on 2 occasions they left me on hold for almost 2 hours and never came to line. This is very disappointing because you guys treat the customer as a suspect instead of a victim. The transaction was done on December 9, 2016 and I'm yet to have any response.

I initially got this card because at one point banks would not give me a checking account. I always loved the getting paid early feature. At my last job it was 1-2 days before. With my new job I get paid a couple of hours after payroll is processed. Even though I currently have a checking account, I still have the bulk of my pay deposited to my NetSpend account. Getting paid early is a beautiful thing.

I don't like carrying money on me in particular now that I'm a senior citizen. NetSpend debit card is better than a credit card in my opinion. There's no interest rates or late fees or hidden interests. I love the ANYTIME ALERTS especially if the card is STOLEN I would know where the card was used and when. If I want I can obtain more than one card having the choice to use one for loading and use when shopping and the other as my primary account debit card which I can leave at home.
The fee to reload is much less than interest paid for the use of a credit card and credit history isn't rated. I like the ease of use since the debit card is accepted everywhere I go and is also a method of keeping me within my budget. Customer service is great in every request I have made and have never failed to have a solution to any problem I've had. If NetSpend wasn't available many people wouldn't have convenient use of an affordable debit card and would have to purchase money orders which can become more costly than loading fees. I'm grateful to whoever thought of NetSpend Debit Card.

I have had my card since Sept. 2016. I can't say enough great things about this card. In today the Banks have so much control over their NSF fees that it is disgusting. They will charge you 30.00 for .10 or .15 cents short. NetSpend doesn't at all. Plus they give you 24 hrs to put money in your acct before they charge you. If you do, then No Charge. You get your direct deposits way before time that the banks did. I will NEVER go back to a town bank again. I will ALWAYS use NetSpend as long as they keep treating customer like they do. Thank You NetSpend. You are truly a God's send.

I'm a disabled veteran and I only get a certain amount a month. I didn't see any sense in opening up an actual bank account because every time I get paid, it goes to my kids and my rent. Getting NetSpend is way more convenient and they have a limit but I never go over that limit. They also have good security features on my account so I don't have to worry about it getting hacked. And if I have problems with money getting fraudulently charged, they take care of it. Every once in a great while when I absolutely need to I do direct deposit. I know they're there and if I ever come up across cash and need to put it on my card, I know I can do it.
I've filed a dispute with them involving Xbox where I messed up and thought it was a fraudulent charge. I forgot that I charged it months before and they took care of it. Xbox and NetSpend worked together to fix it so it was awesome. Initially, Xbox wasn't working with me. I had to keep pushing and pushing and finally, I got it taken care of. NetSpend took care of their stuff right away and gave me all the information I needed. It took a little bit to find out what department I needed to call but things went smoothly once they got me squared away. It's an easy service.

Well, no card was mailed to me until December 29th, 2016 where I was made to pay a late fee for rent, late fee for phone, had to borrow money for my monthly bus pass. So from Dec 5-Dec 29 it took NetSpend and multi calling and searching for a NetSpend TEMP card, that I am giving you this POOR rating. If you had (-) ratings then I would go pick that instead. NetSpend costed me $125 late fee on rent, $35 late fee on phone, and borrowed $70 for bus pass since it took 24+ days to get a replacement card. Now with the new card, I have about $8 left on it for the month.

The Netspend PrePaid Mastercard is very easy to apply. It is also easy to get deposits like pays or earnings and tax refunds. I have also paid my bills using the account and routing number. The major drawback to this type of account is that you pay for everything. You can be charged a fee to deposit and also fees to withdraw funds. Everything is a cost. Also, if you have ongoing payments such as rental cars and storage payments you will be charged more and have to wait for a refund of extra fees. Please weigh your options with these types of accounts. Also, if there is a problem you must create and forward your dispute in writing. The fees are the main drawback here.

I got NetSpend as a secondary account but I'm not using it. I contacted them because I needed an online bank account then I could do credit check. I like the card I got, and since it’s a debit, whatever I got I'm able to spend and I can't spend more than I have. I could use it anywhere, too. In fact, sometimes we go out of the country and I can use it there unlike other bank accounts where I have to call them first to let them know where I'm going to be. Paying bills was also convenient and using direct deposit is easy.
My only issue was that last month I sent an email to ask about a 10 cent charge on my phone. I didn't recognize what it was, but it turned out to be a foreign transaction. Whenever I told them about it, they didn't call me back to discuss. They said it was a fraudulent transaction and went ahead and blocked my card. But since I was thousand miles away from home that time, I had no money to get and I could have no way to use ATM. I was driving a truck and I had to wait 10 days for them to send me a new card. It would have been nice if they called me first, discussed it and asked me if I wanted to block the card, so I would have time to get money off of it. So that was a bad experience. In fact, it kinda got me looking around see if I could find another bank account somewhere but right now I can't. But I like NetSpend and it's been pretty convenient. Other than the issue I had last month, never really had any problems.

The refer a friend program is nice too and with that no one loses. You are given a 20.00 reward for referral and your friend once they activate their card with 40.00. There are other features of the card like the payback rewards I haven't used but all in all I appreciate netspend, and the CSR are friendly. Hope to see more incentives in the future.

I've been with NetSpend for about 10 years now and it's a reliable card. With it, I can only spend what I have and I haven't racked up as much debt. So, as far as overspending, it has really helped a lot. I also have all of my bills connected to my card which is very convenient. I use direct deposit and it's very easy to do. My sister introduced me to the NetSpend card and I decided to get it. I read the terms and conditions, and the program they offer, and I liked the card. I use it to pay my bills and make online purchases. It's easy to use their reload locations and direct deposit option. Using my NetSpend card saved me a little bit of money on transaction fees. It's a pretty good card overall however I had a few bumps in the road with Netspend.
I used to have it to where I could overdraft a lot until a girl lied on me and took money out of her account and transferred it to mine and I got it off my card and gave it to her. And then she called the company and said somebody stole her card. So she put me in a compromising situation where NetSpend banned me from their services except for the card that I do have, and once that card's gone I'm banned.
Another issue is they allowed other consumers to delete money from my account without permission because someone did some kind of online purchases that I didn't make and they didn't refund my money. I think it was also her who did this because she has my information, such as my name, Social Security Number, date of birth, and everything that she needed to gain access to multiple different accounts I had, not just with NetSpend. So I had to fight this out, go to the government, and put an ID alert on my information. Every time somebody uses my card or any of my information, I get an email about it now.
Netspend doesn't do its investigation properly and doesn't side with the customer even if the customer is right. If they do their investigations correctly they will see that I don't create fraud. They could take my personal and criminal history, and see that that's not in my lifestyle. I want Netspend to unblock me and let me get other cards. I need to open another card from time to time since I might need to utilize and share money that I don't have on the card at the time until I get my direct deposit. They know that my direct deposit has been coming to that card for the last 10 years, so there wouldn't be an issue of me paying them back. I wouldn't try to run for $20 or $50, and I've never done that.

Paying $10 a month is a lot cheaper than paying $2 for each swipe, and that's what I like about NetSpend. Additionally, I get my check a few days earlier through them. I also like that I get the notification on the phone of how much I have left in my account. It calculates everything for me so it’s a lot easier for me to manage my money. I use my NetSpend card to pay bills as well, and it's very convenient. I also use their reload location at H-E-B and the process is very easy. I just give them the money and they swipe my card and then the money’s in there within seven minutes.
I used the NetSpend site and e-mailed them for a transaction. I was getting my money back and to have them put it in my account as soon as possible, and they did. NetSpend is a great debit card company and I love it. It’s user-friendly when it comes to online accounts. I've been using it for almost three years, and I won't stop using it because I like it a lot. It’s a lot better than having a bank account.

I was traveling a lot for work and my Credit Union card either kept getting compromised or I would have these issues where even though I let them know that I was traveling, they would put a stop to my account while I was out of the country because I couldn't always answer the phone on their fraud calls. And so, one of my friends recommended a prepaid card just as a safety measure because NetSpend's network seems to be a little bit more secure. And when you call and let them know beforehand that you're gonna go out of town, that's fine. And so, that's how I ended up using them.
I designate a specific amount that goes into my NetSpend account every pay period and it just stays there. Then I use that card if I'm gonna be at a gas station and I wanna protect my other ones. I also use it to pay a few bills. Then their system also allows sending a cashier's check to someone or money order with a lot less hassle. Because I travel about three days out of every week for work, I can't always physically get something. I have my grandmother in an adult daycare program and I pay for it. I don't like writing them checks from my regular account because it takes them a long time to cash them. So, I send them a cashier's check and I can do it straight from my NetSpend account. But I don't use it as a financial management tool. My mother is a president at a Credit Union and so she manages my finances for me.
Whatever their system is on the back end allows for transfer to happen. If I transfer money from my Credit Union account or my E*Trade account to NetSpend or if I get a reimbursement for my travel from work if my job processes it in the morning, it happens in record time like pretty much overnight, which doesn't happen with traditional banks. So I use it for convenience.
However, their customer service is where I have my problem because they obviously have an outsource model for their call center and support center, and they're not good at dealing with gray areas. It's difficult dealing with them at any capacity. And even if you ask to speak with a supervisor, they're just not empowered to do anything. I purchased something online around mid-September and the commitment date from the vendor was that I would receive it within 10 days. After 10 days, I didn't get it. I sent a communication to the vendor and there was nothing. And then, I requested a refund--still no response. Of course, you have protection when you buy something online. So I went to NetSpend and told them about it and that I'd like my money. They made me wait 90 days because they said that they can't get a hold of the vendor, and the very reason why I wanted a refund. That should have been an automatic credit to my account.
But there was a situation where--I'm in the process of planning a wedding--and my mother wanted to pay for my dress. I got my dress in France and I was over there. So, she went to a place and loaded the money onto my account 'cause there was no way for her to transfer it from her account to mine. That was $14,000 that came in and that was a tax issue. So, the fraud department or compliance department from NetSpend called me from Austin headquarters. And they were like, "Hey, we need you to confirm what these funds are, blah, blah, blah." So, I provided them all the documentation and the lady that I dealt with there was amazing. She was on it and she was in this country. It was easy to rectify that.
On their end, when they need something, they'll make sure that it's handled here stateside. But on our end as a customer, it gets outsourced and it's obvious that it's India. I work for Apple and I manage our call centers and so I know what that looks like. You're gonna get the runaround and it's not gonna be easy which is the reason why I only relegate it to very specific types of transactions. And so, there's the disparity.

I was looking for a debit card that I didn't necessarily have to go through banks and I was working at a check cashing place that promoted NetSpend at the time. It wasn't until after I got the NetSpend card that I noticed some of the benefits of having the card and I've pretty much kept it ever since. I get text messages every morning as far as what my balance is so it can keep me on track. I'm able to login either through the app on my phone or just through sending a BAL text to get my balance. It's been able to keep me aware of what my spending habits are, if any charges came through, if I was waiting for charges, and especially if there have been any charges that I didn't authorize to go through.
I like being able to not carry cash but also the fact that I get paid a little early before my paycheck hits. There have been a few times that I had to use the overdraft feature because I didn't calculate what was coming through correctly, which has been nice.
Once I've had some charges that I didn't approve go through. I talked with a representative and I wasn't planning on doing a whole lot of anything but just inquiring where they were from or did it say what it was for. The rep at that point of time cancelled out the card and I just had a deposit on the card so I won't have access to my money. It probably would have been easier for me to get in contact with the people who actually charged me and have the charges reversed, especially because I actually do business with them so it will be in their best interest to investigate to make sure that it wasn't an invalid charge.
I was upset at first so I asked for the supervisor and I was on hold for an actual hour before a supervisor got on the line. They advised me and if I knew someone who had a NetSpend. I told them I did and so I had to buy another NetSpend card to transfer the balance. Once I got the balance transferred, I was able to actually pull the money out of that account. I then advised them that from what the situation is, they should close the new account because I won't be using it and they should mail me a new card for the first account. They assured me that it was gonna rush delivery but I found out later on that it was not. When I got the new card in the mail, I went to go activate it and found out that the second account that I got opened just to transfer the money was the one that the card was attached to, which was supposed to be canceled and it wasn’t, so I was upset about that.
I finally got the card for the current account I wanted to keep and that I have right now. Then there were charges on there for transferring fees and so I was upset about that again. There were two representatives I talked to who calmed me down and helped me out. They reversed the charges due to the fact of everything that was going on. It was a big headache and a big mess and it even tempted me to not go or use NetSpend again if it wasn't for those individuals who I talked to lastly. I also found interesting that when I had an issue and complained, it took an hour for them to get the supervisor. But when I wanted to speak to the supervisors to give them praise because I was able to understand and someone finally helped me out after being frustrated, it was within five minutes.
There are still those people who ended up helping me out but I just wished that they would listen to the situation and try to help instead of telling me "You said this so that means this" type of thing because it's like they weren't listening to what I was actually saying. At any rate, I love NetSpend since I originally got it and I understand that everyone's not perfect. They did make up any mistakes or errors that were caused either by them or not by them.

I received a card in the mail from years ago and decided to use it for direct deposit. When I first signed up, I was told that the ATM would be free. Come to find out, that was not true. I am charged $5 to take money off of my card. So that one left me a little POed because it charges whatever the ATM charges. And then, NetSpend charges $2.50 for using the ATM.
I usually use it for my rent purposes by money order. When I went to Kroger recently, it was telling me that the form of payment couldn't be used. It was saying it was a credit but I told them that I'm using a prepaid card and I've always got money orders with it. I tried to explain it to the representative but he didn't understand. He said to buy money order online. If that's the case, then I might as well just pay my rent online. I don't want to go through an ATM because it's gonna charge me $5 per transaction and let me take out so much in one time. It's not gonna give me the $900 in one setting. I'm gonna have to take out $200 at a time and that's $5 charge every time.
I understood their security work for that. I used to work for Kroger and they used to have those things where people were using false information to take money from prepaid cards. They should just say it and not to beat around the bush. I'm fine with it. They said that it's not working and to contact the banker's side. I told them that it's NetSpend. So I called NetSpend's customer service and asked for a supervisor. It's ridiculous that you have to wait for a supervisor. I left the phone on for literally an hour and 30 minutes and then I hung up because no one came.
I'm trying to figure out if it's the system or if this is something that we can't do with the NetSpend cards anymore. That's all I wanted to know to make sure so I know which way I need to go as far as getting my money for my rent taken off a different type of way. But there's only one way I could and that's with ATM and $5 versus free of bank fees. NetSpend could use some work.

I’ve been with NetSpend for a few years and it’s been up and down with them. They have their quirks but I have my own issues with my finances because I’m a disabled veteran. They get me my money three days early before it actually hits, which is good. They have overdraft protection for up to $100, which I use every month. But in some cases, they cut the card off from me for three, four, or five months and then reactivate it. It's weird.
When I’ve had a death in the family, they did not help me. It was three or four days before it was time to get paid and I could not attend the funeral. I was highly upset with them as much as I was upset with missing the funeral. They wouldn’t even let me speak to a supervisor because this is the set rule. I said there should be someone with overriding capabilities who can listen to my issue and say that I've been a loyal customer for six years, that I've always got my money on time, that I've always paid whatever fees I had back up front so I should be helped. But NetSpend flat out refused.
Two months before that, I had a similar problem. My son was in the hospital and I was trying to get there to see him. I had no money, was not at home and had no transportation. I was stuck where I was. I called and asked NetSpend if someone can lend me $20 so I can either call a cab to get me to somewhere where I can get a ride or have access to one. They flat out refused and gave me the same spiel about the set rule.
They charged me a whole lot of extra fees on things, too. When I went to the casino and pull money out, I get charged $4 at the casino but then NetSpend also charged me $2.50 so it’s $7 every time I make a withdrawal. That’s $10 a shot. So if I withdraw two times and go twice a month, that’s $40 right there which is my own money. I’m gonna be avoiding them soon. They need to speak to their customers once in a while and ask how we're doing so we can send comments in. And they do send emails, but they probably stick these up to somebody else's rump and say that's lunch.

Also, every time I get some money out, it costs $5.50. I always take all my money out ‘cause every time I go to the bank machine, I pay for the bank and I pay for them. Then the max is only $300 so that means if I want to get $900, I got to go $300, $300, $300 and it ends up costing me $15. That part sucks about them but other than that, they’re all right.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback with us. Thank you for the review.
