I was making the minimum payments on my account and the last few times that I paid they returned my money back and shut down my account without any notice. Then get a knock on the door with the sheriff at the door. Summons telling you that Discover is trying to take you to court. Worst credit company I’ve ever had! So stay with Capital One.

I have had my account for 4 years and have always been very happy with it. I have never been late or missed a payment; they raised my credit limit which was helpful to have available when my dog needed surgery. I purchased a home in June and used more of my credit (of which I have quite a bit) than I had in the past. Most of my open credit is unused and has been so for years. I don't close them because I don't want my score lowered.
I just found that Discover lowered my credit limit by $1,200. Thereby also lowering my credit score. Left me a bit open so that I wouldn't go over my limit. Of course calling is pointless. It is all automated. This happened to me a while back with another card. Same story. My payments on everything I have have been current for a minimum of 10 years. In fact, not on all but typically on one a month (and I alternate) I pay more than minimum due.
Credit Karma continues sending advice to open up more credit so that it lowers my percentage of usage (which is also a mystery to me. Why have it open if you can't use it.) This is terrible advice. I have opened up one or two simply for promotions, paid them off and left them. When you do that, if you have a lot of open credit things like just happened with Discover occur because you have too much open. It's a no win situation. My solution (as I did with another large bank) is that I will cut the card up, pay it off and that will be the end of my relationship with Discover. This is unfortunate as my past relationship was a good one.

Regardless of the evidence and/or documentation submitted regarding a dispute, Discover Card will always side with a fraudulent merchant, especially ** merchants who knowingly and deceptively misrepresent merchandise online.
Reviewed Nov. 24, 2024
Recently I had a dispute with a merchant regarding a charge on my Discover card. The merchant sells magazine subscriptions. They claimed that I had authorized automatic subscription renewals (seems to be how companies like that operate with the intention of cheating customers). I did no such thing and asked Discover to open a dispute.
A month or so later Discover informed me that they had investigated and that the charges were valid. They provided me with documentation that the merchant claimed would show that the charges were valid. The documentation included purported links to eMails the merchant said would support their contentions. When I tried to follow one of those links (numerous times) it simply would not work.
I told Discover those facts and asked whether they had tried following the link that I tried or whether they just accepted the merchant's word about the situation. NO ANSWER was forthcoming. I hate being cheated and that is what this seems to be. Discover did not investigate thoroughly on my behalf. I have cancelled my Discover card and will never use them again.

I've had Discover for a very long time but it will be coming to an end. Discover disputes will always go in favor of the company which you purchase from unless you get a statement from them saying they will give you a credit back. How fair is it for me to dispute car labor done incorrectly on my vehicle, with a vehicle check from another company stating repairs are incorrect. Well Discover has rules that they still go with the other company and just squash their customers. I can't wait to pay off and close out this card 2025.

The credit card company Discover, should just be re-named a card shark. Their business practices are to draw you in and then if you get sick and can no longer work, they take you to court over and over again trying to get money out of someone who can't work. They prey on the innocent and show their evil when you are unable to pay it back. Stick to Capital One.

This is a horrible Company to do business with. I filed a claim sometime early October against South Central Wildlife for $2,300 dollars. Discover credit my money back and when this company sent over whatever they had to send and the credit disappeared. I called Discover and they told me that I needed someone to come out and look at the attic and send over what they say I did that and sent them all the paperwork on October 28, 2024 and on October 31, 2024 the credit disappeared of $2,300 credit showed back up like they had received my paperwork.
On 11-6-2024 the credit was gone so I called Discover and talk to la Porsche and she stated that they haven’t received any paperwork that’s a lie so I ask to speak to a manager. So I talk to Gabriel and he stated that they don’t have any paperwork from me. I sent it USPS two days express so I know they got it when that credit pop back up after I get this resolved. I’m done with Discover Card. I explained to Discover that I’m still hearing noise in the attic that’s why I got another company to come out. The only receipt that I have is on my Discover Bill.

I called as soon as we returned and because we have been loyal members 35+ years, she said it would be added to our next month's bill with a late charge and fees. I said fine. She checked our record and said it had been more than 10 years since the last late payment. Today we again are traveling and my card was refused. I called again. This time I am told the card can't be used because of the late payment. So here I stand at the hotel desk embarrassed. So being a loyal 35+ year member means nothing. Rules are rules. I opened an online CD with Discover. Their app was not able to facilitate the fund transfer from my bank (Chase). I had to transfer funds through other apps and after I funded the CD they changed the rate (to a significantly lower percentage). Then after being in the phone with a rep for 40 minutes, I was advised I could withdraw the funds for 7 days. When I called back on the 7th day to ask for the funds to be withdrawn and close the CD because they didn’t honor the rate I was offered when opening the CD, I was advised that the rep I originally spoke to had made a mistake and I wasn’t able to withdraw the funds for 61 days. Absolutely despicable business practices!!
Discover bank acted more like a used car salesman than a reputable banking institution!! The CD rate change is going to cost me more than $3,000 and so far 4 phone calls upwards of 40 minutes each and now I’m forced to wait an additional 60 days while they sit on my money without any acceptance of responsibility nor will they honor either the rate that was offered or make any attempts to make things right. Well, I received my statement the other day ending oct 4th. Due date is Nov 1st. Paid $400 on the Oct 10th. Shows pending online. But still shows I owe money on Nov 1st. Called them up. They said, "Oh, you should never send your payments that early and now that will go toward you paying your last statement." WHAT? I made sure it says you owe money by Nov 1st before I sent the money. On any other credit card would say YOU DO NOT OWE ANY MONEY AT THIS TIME. If you are sending it early. TG I checked. I would have been late thinking Nov, 1st was already paid. Also I transferred to the no interest for 18 months. So I would have been screwed by being late because they put this towards My last statement because I paid it within a few days AFTER the end of the cycle. So they told me not even to pay the minimum I owe for Nov. 1st till a week before it is due?? How crazy is that?

I value my relationship ship with any organization that grants me credit. I have previously had an incredible relationship with Discover. That recently changed! I received a preapproved offer for an additional card with miles rewards. I accepted and the card arrived approximately two weeks later. Soon after I started getting request from Discover for access to my Income Tax Records. They already had all my personal information, including employment and all my debts. I declined allowing them access to my Income Tax files as they contain unrelated information that isn’t needed for their credit determination. They closed my new account as failure to comply. I just received a letter telling me that additionally they closed my longtime Discover Cash Back card. I have had it for years with a credit line of $11,000.00. I have never been late, missed a payment or encountered any account issues. There was no warning and zero empathy by when I called to inquire.
The Customer Service Representative was short and not helpful in explanation the need for my personal income files. I was willing to provide check stubs, pay ledgers, etc. for proof of my submitted income. My Human Resource Department was on board with providing any details they might need. All to no avail. I’m actually better off without their name on my list of creditors. I was minimally impacted by their decision. I simply called my other creditors and asked for a small limit increase and every single account complied. That allowed my utilization percentage to lower. Discover also added a note to my file that said they made the decision to close my account not me the customer. My only thought for them is, “How did that work out for you?”
To anyone reading my review, inquire at Chase, Citibank, USAA, Capital One, etc., before you ever consider Discover. You’ll find folks that celebrate loyalty, responsibility and a passion for great, fair customer service. I will certainly never refer my family or friends to discover, no matter the cost. The lender market is wide open so go out there and DISCOVER you can do better. My name is Former Customer and I approve this message. My guess is this will never make the review submitted thread but I wanted to give it the old college try.

On June 22, 2024 I was scammed for an online purchase from China in the amount of $142.70. The merchant fraudulently advertised .22 caliber magnum switch guns for $69.95 each, so I ordered two for a total of $142.70. The merchant had a 30-day money back guarantee if not satisfied. I received the switch guns on July 12, 2024, and come to find out they were overpriced plastic toy guns, so I immediately emailed the merchant requesting a refund. The merchant was only willing to give a 5% refund, which would have been approximately $7 or $8 dollars, nor was the merchant willing to give me a return address for the switch guns.
Long story short, I then contacted the Discover Card dispute center and gave them all information and documentation about the transaction. Bottom line, Discover sided with the merchant and Discover NEVER sent me any correspondence (letter nor email) as to the outcome of the dispute, in spite of all my documentation submitted to Discover. Because of this, I paid off my entire balance and closed my account. Also, I had a Discover Bank account with a $16,000+ balance, and I closed that account, too, with Discover sending me a check for the balance. Imagine, I was a Discover Card holder since 1993.

Zero Stars – Discover Will Not Stand Behind You. If you have a dispute over a product you purchased with your Discover card, beware. While you can file a dispute, they won’t tell you that you can only win if the merchant doesn’t respond. Discover seems more interested in protecting the merchant than the customer. We had a dispute with a company that provided a defective product. Despite having proof that the company agreed to refund us— including a signed document from the owner—Discover refused it, claiming they couldn't consider it because it was a legal document, and "they're not lawyers." This was ridiculous since the document was meant as proof, not for legal judgment.
It didn’t matter to Discover that the product was damaged or that the refund was agreed upon; they simply sided with the merchant. Their dispute process exists, but it seems designed to shield businesses, not consumers. Discover is a predatory company, and with so many credit cards out there, consider this a warning. Steer clear.

Discover Personal Loans has truly lost its way. I've been a loyal Discover customer for over 10 years, never missing a payment on my credit cards, mortgages, and HELOC loans. But over the last 3 years, something has changed, and not for the better. Recently, I applied for a consolidation personal loan to simplify my finances during a temporary setback caused by external factors. With a credit score of 760 and a DTI around 31%, I expected Discover to understand my impeccable history and be willing to work with me. Instead, I had to deal with an underwriter who could barely understand English, which is a huge issue when making a major financial decision. This isn't a criticism of where they're from—it's just a fact that clear communication is crucial in underwriting a loan.
Despite being a long-time, responsible customer, Discover treated me like a risk they couldn’t take. Meanwhile, I was offered the exact same loan from LightStream at a rate that was 4% better! That's a massive difference that speaks volumes about Discover’s attitude toward customer loyalty. If you're considering a personal loan, do yourself a favor: stay far away from Discover and check out other lenders like LightStream. They’ll treat you with respect and give you a better deal. If this review helps even one person avoid the disaster of dealing with Discover, it'll have been worth every second of my time.

However, online customer service couldn't explain why I was charged a different rate and simply blamed the merchant. After filing a complaint with the CFPB, the CEO's office responded by saying they can charge whatever exchange rate they like per their terms of service. After being customers of Discover Credit Card Services for more than 6 years, we just found out our Credit Card was cancelled. We had no help at all on the phone. "Not using as intended." As a customer with very good credit and 100% paying our bills, we should be able to decide how and when/where we use the Credit Card at our own discretion, no? That is at least how one uses cards to shop and purchase services. At least we thought so. Vague statement by agent on the phone: "I have never seen such a remark on anyone's file." We have cut up and destroyed our cards and continue on.
We pride ourselves in being truthful and have a stellar credit report, just have no clue. Because Discover decided to cancel our line of credit with them, we are confident that our report speaks for itself. My personal guess is, they are not making money on us, as we have paid our bills on time or before due date in full. Could be wrong, because the current economy seems to like people in endless debt.

Effectively, they froze my card for a whole week for being barely late on one payment after years of regular and on-time payments. And the customer service I received when trying to get it resolved was absolutely horrible. Closing my account immediately and getting a new card elsewhere.

I don't know how you still have people working for your company. Your managers can't handle when their reps have questions regarding their quality scores and say they are being argumentative. Even when their scores are great you still criticize them for having perfect scores. When they say they don't know what can be done better you then again criticize them. How do you expect people to stay working for you when all your managers do is criticize and never say hey you got good scores great job. Here's a reward for good work done like other companies do. And then when people quit you can't be bothered to respond to them to get the equipment sent back. How professional is that? What a joke Discover is.

This is the second time I’ve called Discover to dispute a charge, and I was informed that the charge cannot be disputed at the moment due to their 15-day dispute resolution policy. When I requested Discover to block any future charges from this merchant, I was told that they couldn’t do that either. Two months later I still didn’t see it and inquired and they said they “didn’t see where I was due a credit to begin with” when I had the previous conversations in writing. He stated we all do, I stated no they don't, he stated, "Yes they do, if you don't believe me you can hang up and call back." How ignorant for someone to say such things. As a former customer of Discover Credit Card, I am compelled to share my disappointing experience with their abysmal business practices. My account was unceremoniously closed by Discover simply because I did not use the card for a few months. This heavy-handed approach to customer relationships is nothing short of appalling.
Instead of valuing long-term customers and fostering relationships, Discover chooses to penalize individuals who may not use their card frequently for whatever reason. Not only did Discover close my account abruptly, but they also failed to consider any extenuating circumstances that may have led to the lack of card activity. As a customer, I expect a certain level of communication and understanding from a financial institution, especially one that claims to prioritize customer satisfaction.
This experience has left me deeply disillusioned with Discover Credit Card. I cannot in good conscience recommend their services to anyone looking for a reliable and customer-friendly credit card provider. There are plenty of other options available that treat their customers with respect and understanding, unlike Discover. In conclusion, Discover's decision to close my account due to inactivity is a clear demonstration of their shortsighted and customer-unfriendly business practices. Save yourself the frustration and disappointment by steering clear of Discover Credit Card.

They refused to even open a dispute, stating that the hotel “provided a service” and it was my problem that I was not satisfied with it. Would you be comfortable sleeping in a bedbug-infested room? June 18th we called again in the morning and were told the same thing. The letter never came. We called again at 5:30 and we were told it takes 48 hours. Why does it take so long for a simple letter? There is absolutely no sense of urgency. They don’t care that this was an important request by one of their customers. My relationship with Discover started out great. I always read and heard the advertisement “You’re never responsible for unauthorized purchases on your discover card.” THAT STATEMENT IS A COMPLETE LIE! I never thought it would apply to me and hoped it never happened. Well, unfortunately it now has happened and as helpful as they seemed and sounded in the beginning, they have now done the exact opposite. Basically saying, "We are done investigating, you are now responsible as we have put charges back on your card from months ago. And if you choose to continue your fight and investigation you will need to do that on your own."
Meanwhile, these charges will remain until paid in full. Even though I’ve sent in all proof and receipts and spoken to “experts” who specialize in these situations who have looked over my documents and said, "Oh my gosh I see exactly what you are saying and the proof you’ve sent in is correct to back up your dispute in plain black and white." Now all of a sudden, nothing makes sense and they closed my case with no progress or results in my favor. I always recommend Discover and thought highly of the company and customer service. I've had my Discover card for 5 years. I use credit cards because I like the convenience and always pay off at the beginning of the month. After this last debacle won't be using my Discover card. Last month they sent me a notice of late payment. Which is impossible since I pay my balance off each month. When I called support they couldn't explain why I received the notification. They brushed it off by saying since they forgive the first missed payment there was no late charge. So I'm good. (RIGHT!) Truth is Discover should not have flagged me for a late charge in the first place!
This month I checked the Discover web portal to be sure my payment posted. So I went to the Discover web portal and the dashboard still shows that I have a balance still pending. I thought WHAT! I'm sure I made that payment. So I went to my bank to see and sure enough my bank shows that amount had posted the previous day. So I dug further. I went my account using Discover's web portal, clicked the dropdowns to access recent payment history and Discover's own portal contradicts itself in that the posted payment history does reflect the fact that payment was posted the same day my bank says it posted, but when I talk to the Discover customer support person the support she tells me that my payment has not yet posted even though their web portal says it's posted. They have no explanation for that!
The issue is that as long as there is a balance on my account Discover will try to charge me interest. They have done this to me before. I'm tired of it. I think Discover's accounting systems are flawed and their customer service needs to be better informed. There are better credit card companies than Discover. I would not recommend Discover to anyone.

I absolutely hate Discover. I have reached a point in which I don’t know what to do. 2 months ago, I applied for an Secured Credit card, in the hopes to improve my credit score. I signed up on Credit Karma and got approved. When signing up, I clicked the button to deposit $100 into the account. I remember clearly there was an option to click:
-$200
-$300
-$400
I have even gone back through the process to make sure. Within the hour, I received an email saying that Discover was requesting to withdraw $1000 from my bank account. I immediately called discover telling them I could not afford putting $1000 into the card. The teller was kind and basically told me that I would have to call my bank to stop all payments from discover. I did so and within 3 days, the money had still been withdrawn. I called multiple times and was told that I would have to wait until the card came in, then cancel it, and request my refund. I waited a week until the card arrived, canceled the card, and was told I would receive a check in the mail within a week. It has now been two and a half months and I have yet to receive my money back. I am BEYOND LIVID. None of the employees are on the same page and I have been given a lot of wrong information by almost every employee. Here is a basic outline of my experience:
1- waited a week on check2- called a week later after not receiving check and I was told to wait another week.
3- waited another week and didn’t receive refund. Called again and was told that whoever told me that was wrong and that I would have to wait two months until I could receive a refund. I then asked to have it expedited and they approved.
4- I was told I’d have to wait a month to receive the money.5- I waited a month and STILL DID NOT RECEIVE THE MONEY.
6- I called again and was told that I would have to wait ANOTHER month in order to request a refund, which would ultimately be a direct deposit into my account.
I waited another month and I have called. I was able to give the teller my information and was approved for a direct deposit refund. The lady told me I would receive my money within 3-5 days. It has now been five days and NOTHING. I called today and was told that the teller gave me wrong information and that I would receive the refund within 16 days. Then, they proceeded to tell me that if I didn’t receive my refund, to give it another month until I could request another one. I am FED up.

When I called them, they told me that it was because they had a recording of me changing my story saying that I gave my card to my son to use which was a lie, my son has his own Discover card which is backed off of my card so he wouldn’t need to use mine.
I asked them to send me the recording. They said I had to get a subpoena. I have spoken to literally four different people and each time had to start over with my story. They asked me to prove that I didn’t make the charges and I told them how would I do that? If I don’t even know what the charges are. I have over $100,000 in available credit from different credit cards, including a platinum American Express and many other cards such as Citibank and Capital One, which none of them have ever given me the trouble this company did. But for heaven's sake, do not have a problem or fraudulent transaction. When I opened a Shopify store I used my Discover card to add the DropShipper Spocket to my apps. For 288 dollars. Which is a fee for 1 year. I then worked on getting this store going, but it did not work the way I wanted. Lucky for me, the renewals for the second year was declined because I did not have enough funds on the card. I then spoke with Spocket and was told, that the payment was declined and I am not a member anymore. I was happy to hear and took of my payment method of the account (Discover) thereafter.
On 11 11 2023 I received an email that my transaction went through. I renewed Spocket for 288 dollars. I was shocked. I did not even have my Shopify store anymore, they did not have a payment method on file and still charged my card. But what was the more shocking and upsetting is that Discover Card despite me not having enough money and despite there was not authorization paid the 288 $ and then blamed me.
From there on I pay so much more interest that I was not able to make it below my limit and they keep on charging. I tried communicating a couple times. They absolutely do not care and keep saying it is my fault. I keep writing reviews now and Spocket gets reported to BBB and Attorney General. Discover Card in short paid an unauthorized transaction and blame that on me! There is no attempt otherwise to help to get balances down or any offers to help for loyal customers. Because they removed all control over account management functions, I cannot replace cards, change authorized users, or utilize any other card management features to manage the fraudulent activity. Someone initiated a fraud review and Discover cannot account for that. Someone tried to apply for a credit increase in my name and they can't figure that one out, either. I have spent countless hours passed around customer service/supervisors/fraud and back again with no resolution.
Don't fall for the "lower interest rate" scheme. Your account will be "reviewed" once a month for the full year to "decide" whether to unsuspend the account or not. It all leads to further problems until the situation becomes impossible to resolve and you close your account out of sheer frustration. Recently, the Better Business Bureau had to get involved when Discover tried to charge me 69.09 after the full debt amount was paid off. They tried to pass off the extra charges as "residual interest". Once the Better Business Bureau stepped in, they removed those charges. Now, due to the fraud on my account, a new account has to be set up and the cards. I have been informed that I still can't replace my card or manage the new account.
I now have no card, no means to replace or manage a new card, and no control over my account. At this point, I feel like scammers have more access and control to my account than I have. The company is too compartmentalized, the customer service is institutionalized and ineffective (non existent, honestly), and there seems to be no accountability for Discover to protect its customers. For this last reason, customers should understand what Discover's pay off program entails in order to make an informed decision.

I recently switched bank accounts. I had a zero balance on my Discover card so hadn't updated my bank information yet on my account. I initiated a balance transfer last week. Your form did not mention the bank it would be going to - if it would have I would have caught my mistake and fixed it. Today I get the email that the $9k posted to my Discover account and that email listed my old bank which is how I learned of my mistake. I (mistakenly) thought I could call Customer Service and get this fixed. NO. So to recap we are at a point now that this could be fixed and I not out money (and Discover not out money as I am **NOT** paying back money I won't get. I will just file bankruptcy.
Discover told me that I need to call back March 17 so I can go through some kind of "punishment" period where I do not sleep and worry 24x7 about being out this money. Only on March 17 will they bother to help me. I bet the person I talked to is giving himself time to divert this money to HIS PERSONAL ACCOUNT during this 8 days. I am already under a lot of stress and this has put me over a mental health threshold. I will track down whoever steals my $9k and "deal with them" since Discover could easily reverse this today but won't. 8 days for punishment? I have been punished enough under the Biden Administration as have many others. I made a mistake. I will never pay this balance back. I will come after your employee who is giving himself time to divert my money to his prepaid debit card!

Beware of Discover's Shocking Lack of Customer Empathy. I recently had the most astonishingly terrible customer service experience with Discover, and I feel compelled to share my story to warn others about the shocking lack of empathy and assistance I encountered. Despite being in the Executive Office of Customer Advocacy, Joseph and the Discover team openly acknowledged their ability to address a late payment issue but callously declared they were "unwilling" to do so. This response, or lack thereof, left me questioning if their role truly encompasses advocating for the consumer. The complete disinterest in resolving my concerns reflected poorly on Discover's commitment to its customers. It is abundantly clear that they have zero regard for their customers as individuals. This has undeniably been the worst customer service experience I have ever encountered.
I want to emphasize that I will not rest until this unfortunate experience with Discover's customer service is widely known. It is my responsibility to ensure that others are made aware of the lack of support and empathy they may encounter as Discover customers. Discover's handling of my situation has been nothing short of a disgrace, and I implore others to reconsider choosing them for their financial needs. No customer should be subjected to such callous treatment, especially when it could have been a straightforward matter for them to do the right thing.

I have a Discover credit card. No problems. I have a Discover savings account. No problems. They touted their new cash back debit card. I applied and was sent one in short order...but...problems. I tried to activate the debit card online. Problems. I called a rep and patiently, verbally verified my identity. That wasn't good enough. He wanted me to upload my driver's license (and possibly other docs) but I interrupted him only to say no. I understand that they want to protect themselves, but uploading docs online wouldn't protect me. I told the rep that I was going to cut the debit card into pieces. I did so immediately after the call.
Document uploading demands are increasing with more and more companies. Even after complying, they still tend to refuse service. I'd had that negative experience with another company, and will never upload docs again. I'd rather divorce myself from any company that states such a demand - even if that means having no credit card at all. Therefore, even though the debit card is listed on my Discover account, it remains at zero. I've zeroed my savings account, too. Depending upon the possible merger Discover may have with Capital One, I may rid myself of the Discover credit card as well. Discover has sadly gone downhill. If you are considering doing business with them, this would be a very bad time, and possibly a very bad decision.

Deceptive and total lack of transparency! Don't explain what interest saving balance will be, and no way to have payments go to interest accruing balance. Instead, they apply all the payments to the 0% interest balance transfer. No way to pay off the interest accruing purchases other than pay off the entire balance, including the 0% balance transfer. What is the point of a balance transfer unless you buy nothing? Fine, but they need to explain all of this carefully. The card stinks. Notice the difference in number of stars between this and Chase. I have loved Chase, always very clear and transparent. Never had a problem. Also, Discover has an upfront fee for balance transfers which isn't made explicit until the transaction is completed. I had Discover for about 8 years and when I first got them, I loved them! But the longer you're with them the more screwed you become. I had to use my Discover in 2020 after I lost my job… just to be able to eat. And well they took full advantage of that and charged a ton of interest and then as interest rates rose, obviously so did my interest rate to a staggering 29%. I could barely afford the minimum and the interest literally made the minimum I was paying not even scratch the surface of what I owed. Basically, my min was $182, and my interest was $178 each month… so it was going down… by like $4. I tried calling multiple times and saying I’m going through a hardship I need help, I can’t pay this. They froze my account and lowered the min to $100 and the interest to $50 a month for 2 months…. Okay thanks that really helped me.
Mind you, according to the pay off prediction it would take 30 years to pay off if I paid the minimum, why would 2 months at that rate do anything??? You froze my account, just leave it like that for a least 6 months, a year??? Like I have never been late ever and I have been a customer of theirs for years but because I got screwed over cause of a global pandemic and I needed to eat, I am now screwed… Well I eventually got approved for a loan to consolidate my debt and get a lower interest rate and the bank that approved it took a while to approve it. So by the time the payoff amount came the payoff number that bank had was $30 more than paying off Discover.
The bank wouldn’t let me change it cause it was what was approved so they told me to send it anyway… I then had a credit of $30. I called and asked for that credit back. They said, "You need to wait until the 25th for the new billing cycle." (Mind you this is the beginning of that month), well I waited!!!!! And guess what???? My balance which was -$30 and THEY owed me… they charged me interest!!!! $55 of interest!!!! So now I owe them again!!! I called them and after being on hold forever while they figured out why this would happen and they were talking to their manager they said the manager will have to look at it and refund me this money and then I need to call back in 48 hours to then request my $30 check!!!
You have my address, you have my bank… why do I need to request something that should be automatic…. Well I am not sure if they will move this forward because they’re saying that there justified in charging me the interest of $55 because from the 25th of the last month to the beginning of the next… when I paid it all off… I still had a balance so for a week in that billing cycle I had a balance, so that $55 is the back pay from when I still owed… like how crooked can that be!!! To be fair the people you talk to are super nice and understanding, I truly believe this is the higher-ups at Discover that don’t care about their customers… well besides getting new ones.. thanks for screwing me Discover…

It felt like Discover was trying to make it difficult for me to get information and dispute charges.
I called Discover regularly and disputed nearly $6,000 of charges. However, Discover only credited me for several charges. Discover canceled my cards and issued new ones on several occasions, but fraudulent activity continued to occur. After nearly two years, someone from a different credit card company suggested that I change my account password. Once I did that, the fraudulent activity ended. If Discover had informed me of this earlier, many of the charges could have been prevented. Discover advertises that its services are safe and customers have fraud protection. What is the point? If I want to stop "new charges" I will just decide not to use my card. The only reason to block purchases is to stop recurring charges. If I had fraud, I would just get a new card number so there is literally no point in suspending all my purchases. If I get a new card number the purchases will continue on my new card. To be fair to the agent, I could just be stupid and need more things explained since this is my first year opening credit accounts (although I have a pretty good existing credit score at 740, thanks mom!) and I'm ultimately new to this. But it really shouldn't be this hard to get answers even if I need more information than a seasoned credit account holder. I am currently trying to switch from Capital One over to Discover it due to better benefits and the intro 0% APR. Chatted with a guy on their live online chat for 30 mins or more, with it going absolutely nowhere. After 30-45 mins I sort of (?) got my answer on why I was having errors and ultimately was denied. I kept getting an error screen about not being able to retrieve my bank account log so I started a support chat. Initially he said it was the name on my bank info not matching up, which I verified 3 times with him.
After doing that for 10 minutes, it was another issues of "multiple inquiries". So why couldn't you tell me that was the reason I was unable to apply instead of running me around in circles about my bank info which was right all along? My agent somehow pretty much kept talking and talking without answering my question of what that meant. Finally I just tell him to tell me the names of my inquiries. I have my car loan and my Capital One card which are reasons to deny me. This isn't the agent's fault, but I can't wrap my head around my boyfriend with zero credit score and zero history can get approved for a 1000$ limit cash back card but I'm denied even with a good score.
Overall, saltiness about being denied aside, the customer service was just unhelpful and unclear about answering my questions. I have never had to chat with customer service for any company for longer than 15 minutes maximum so this was crazy to me, to get an answer I could have received in the beginning. I applied and was approved for a card a couple months ago. Since my credit is what most consider very good I had no problem getting it. However, I went back and forth about getting another card, but I had a family vacation coming up which was a cruise to the Bahamas. After getting the card I waited to activate it until a couple days before we left. I got on the Discover App and set up an upcoming travel notification and everything I needed to do on my part. Once I got to the city I would be getting on the ship I had to pick up a prescription from a Big Box store pharmacy. When I tried paying the card was declined, mind you I had used it a few times the night before, so I assumed it was either their card reader or a technical issue. After getting onto the ship I initiated a chat just to double check and was asked to call an 800 number.
Once I called I was informed that the card had been flagged for possible fraud and I would need to do an ID verify. Not a problem, or so I thought. After providing every number that I had available to me at the time, I was told they were unable to verify me. Mind you I’m on a ship that is floating further away from land and this card is my only access to any type of funds. My service is fleeting the further away I get and the call keeps dropping. I’m so stressed and honestly terrified about what I will do. Each time I call I’m met with the same problem after explaining the situation each and every time beforehand. None of the representatives were helpful and a few were downright disrespectful and rude! One actually hung up on me after saying “Nope can’t verify you. The card will remain locked for 14 days. Is that it?”
The last gentleman I spoke with was very helpful and tried his best, but was unable to get me verified. He explained that I had to be verified by a phone number that I’ve previously been associated with. I’m 19 and have just recently had a couple bills transferred into my name, so I assume maybe I could verify with one of my parents' phone numbers. I’m still not sure because no one would steer me in the right direction. After that final call, I accepted that I was in a really bad situation. This company stranded me a 1,000 miles from home in another country with $61.00 to my name. They essentially ruined my vacation and put so much unnecessary stress on me. I understand the security is in place for a reason, but I feel like they could verify someone in more than one way especially since phone numbers are so commonly changed!
If I had not scheduled the travel, went through verification twice (once just days before) and was verified in a different both times, I would understand. I did everything I was told to do. I provided everything I was supposed to provide. This vacation was planned for over a year and less than 30 minutes it was completely destroyed and I was literally as the saying goes “Up the creek without a paddle!” Or a penny. I’ll end by saying when you have a customer who does everything you ask of them, has impeccable credit and payment history and there’s an issue, you should be able to resolve the issue in a few ways. I was desperate, I was scared, and defeated! I pleaded with them to please help me and was met with some of the most unprofessional help I’ve ever experienced. If you go with this company please just be careful and repeatedly clarify that everything is taken care of.

Oh, let me tell you about my wonderful experience with these parasites. My father died on 3 August, 2011. As executor, of course I had to look to settle his finances and estate. Discover Card and their merciless dogs began calling 24 hours after the man died. The calls came at a rate of about 8 per day. They always began with "Sorry for your Loss", and then "You are under no obligation to pay", which was always followed by "Is your checkbook handy?". Every. Single. Day. They would call me while I'm trying to calm down hysterical family. Call me while I'm talking to the estate lawyer. Call me when I'm trying to talk to the coroner. Every day, multiple times per day. All for a lousy 3,400 bucks, which they would have gotten once I'd had the man's finances in order.
I NEVER forgot how they did this to me, and at a time when I should have been grieving, this parasitic company wouldn't even let me do that - they were too busy calling me on their speed dial with their minions. Even after I paid off his debt, and my own and cancelled my card - telling them exactly why I would never do business with them again - they had the audacity to provide me with false sympathy, then suggested I keep the card and put it in a shoebox 'for a rainy day'. I'll never use their card again, or any of their services, so the remainder of my time in this world.

The Discover Credit Card folks really need to be taught how to deal with people. Discover employees are rude, arrogant, superior. Unfortunately, people today are incomes are changing with every day. I notified Discover that I'd be late with my payment and some "**" calls me and commence to yell and demand for my payment on this very day. She didn't want to hear about my problem but just wanted the payment. Discover really needs to screen their employees on proper technique on speaking to customers/people in general. Mostly I've had good experiences with Discover Card, but like most people who come here, I didn't come here to give them kudos. My wife has always liked their customer service and normally I have not had any problems with them either. But one bad experience can really turn a person off and like in my case I just don't trust them anymore. Discover has a policy that says if you didn't receive any goods or services and you are disputing a charge then you are normally (something like that) entitled to a refund. It's important to me that I can trust their word on this. But unfortunately I was ripped off nearly $100 and received absolutely no goods and no services. Zero on either. Zip nada nothing. As a credit card holder one would think that a person in this position would have the option of not paying, stopping payment, getting a refund, whatever.
It's supposed to be MY money. I'm paying the bills. It's NOT Discover and it's NOT the crooks who took my money. So why don't I have the choice not to pay crooks if I don't get anything, I repeat ANYTHING for my money? Without going into further details I would suggest to people that they do like I do and start using a different credit card other than Discover because if you think they have your back and you don't have to pay crooks who outright steal your money, you might be sadly mistaken. Unfortunately Discover card cannot be trusted.
They don't have your back and it's not like using cash. It's not really your money. You might think it is but it's not. I think it might have something to do with the crook. For example if the crook is the government, oh well gee I guess that's different huh? If it's the government well I guess they are always right. It's like Lilly Tomlin and the phone company "We don't care, we're the phone company" (for those of you old enough to remember). Well buyer beware when say you are renting a cabin from a government owned park. They can rip you off whenever they feel like it. Discover card won't do anything about it. They don't care.

Discover is racist towards minorities, if you make a large payment on a card with them, from your bank that you have been using to make regular payments from. They will not show that you have paid down the card with the large payment, until up to 8 business days after they review that the payment is the legit. Meanwhile the funds are already out of your bank account. If you want the payment to show quicker and the funds be available on the credit card, you have to three way to your bank with Discover on the phone, so that they can verify the payment came from your account, which is very disrespectful, because they are treating you like a child at that point. They say that normally when you make a payment it takes two business days for funds to be available on the card, but yet if you try to pay off half or all your balance on the card, it takes up to 8 business days for funds to be available after they do research.
This process can affect your credit, because when your statement closes that is the balance that is reported to the credit bureau, so let's say statement closing date is 09/02/2022, you made a payment to pay off the last statement balance that was $3,000 on 08/31/2022. That payment is not going to show you paid off the balance to the credit bureau until the next month, and you want to use less than 30% of your credit card. But the 0% promotions do not help your credit when making purchases, because your credit usage still needs to be less than 30%.
If you had a large purchase using way more than 30% credit card utilization, your credit will take a hit for that one month, but by the way Discover takes care of large payments made to them, your credit can take a hit for two months. Also this has nothing to do with them being racist for this part, but they charge 3% of the balance to come up with their minimum payment, when other creditors only charge 1% of the balance, this pertains to 0% promo offers as well. Minimum payment with Discover is 3% of balance no matter what.

Made a dispute because a restaurant puts food we cannot eat in their seafood bucket, they admit these details are not mentioned in online ordering, and they don’t do refunds. They won the dispute, Discover said there’s nothing they could do. It’s like poisoning our food and getting away with it. So I closed the account not realizing the dispute chargeback was underway, by the time I realized I was slapped with late fees.
I called Discover and they said they could reverse 1 late fee, when I pay just agree to the whole amount and not to worry the fee removal would be reflected, and it would take 2 business days for this payment to be withdrawn from my bank. Turns out Discover bamboozled me despite everything being recorded on the call and in their notes. The total amount was withdrawn the same day. No fee reduction whatsoever. Not only does Discover not fight for you when vendors could get away with murder, they have shady business practices to get any last hurrah. Ok, I applied for a $500 line of credit on a secured line, I was approved, so I added my wife. After weekly payments to pay my card down to zero every week, I decided we needed a larger limit increase. I was approved for the max of $2500 Secured. I choose to do $1000, bumping our credit limit to $1500 total. November 1st my we deposited the $1000.00, it typically can take up to 8 business days to reflect your account. It's November 18th, no limit increase, I've called 11 times and get the same ** run-around story. The people are very friendly, but management and the secured line department supervisors are absolutely worthless.
After reading 172+ negative reviews, it warranted us to yell them to stop our credit increases, Expedite and refund our $1000. They said it will take 2-3 BILLING CYCLES? WHAT??? I should have trusted my gut and never applied for the increase. I'm a person of integrity, something this company lacks big time. I can't say it enough, the people are nice who answer, but trying to get anywhere with anyone is next to impossible. They said the reason for the 3-week delay is unknown, they have multiple people working on it and they are all communicating by email. SMH, it takes 1 individual who knows what they're doing to push the reflect to account button, they can't seem to find that button?
Long story short, if you're needing a tradeline with revolving credit for any of the many reasons, go with Open Sky or Capital One, Discover isn't accepted everywhere like visa and master card is. I'm not trying to knock the company, but they somehow lost $1,000 of my money which my bank confirms is in Discover's hands, but have zero answers but the same sob story I get every time I call. I will keep my current $500 card open, but I truly hope this reaches you and you find truth in this and what many other 1-star reviews are saying.

I had the bike built but the card was declined, I called CS and they said the account was so new they couldn’t help me in anyway, I politely asked for a reference number for our conversation and was promptly hung up on. No big deal, I’ll put it on another credit card and have Discover fix it all in a couple days.
Two days later I called and asked to have the balance transfer fee waived so I could have zero APR to pay off this mountain bike, I was passed around to about eight different employees, two of whom admitted there were a lot of problems with the instant credit and something should be done, but ultimately the blame was placed on me since “Discover can decline any purchase for any reason”. I was also called “presumptuous” for thinking Discover would right their wrong and help me balance the transfer with no fee. Discover decided there was nothing they were willing to do or could do, whatever it actually was, and when I responded with “if nothing can be done I will cancel the card.” They swiftly responded “okay your card is canceled, have a good day.”
I was in complete disbelief and will never touch another Discover product with a ten foot pole. I was a Discover Card holder for 9 years from 2001-2010 (among many others). My initial credit limit was $9,000.00 with a APR of 18%. As a rule, I always keep my credit balances low and pay the entire balance off every month and I have never missed a payment (with any of my credit cards). Every 2 years I would call customer service to request a lower interest rate and they denied the request every time. In 2006 my credit monitoring service stated that Discover Card was continually running a credit inquiry on 2 of the 3 credit bureaus every 90 days. Discover service rep explained that the inquiries are for periodic account reviews for the purpose of automatic credit limit increases, that I never received. In 2007 I requested a credit limit increase and was instantly approved for an additional $300.00! One $300 credit limit increase in 9 years with stellar credit (820).
In late 2009 I started receiving letters from Discover stating that my account will be closed if I do not use the card more frequently. I began rotating my credit cards for weekly trips to the grocery store and set my account for autopay. In 2010 Discover closed my credit account without warning, although customer service stated that 1 letter was mailed out and not returned. This account closure directly caused my credit score to decrease -23 points which also lowered my credit rating. I called Discover Card customer service to request a review of the account closure and the rep informed me that the only option is to re-apply for a new credit card account, which would again, just bring my credit score/rating down even further, so I declined. Unfortunately 12 years later every other day, I still receive multiple pre-approved credit card offers/invitations from discover (not exaggerating). Discover Card is the only credit card that I've ever had an issue with.

The last supervisor mentioned to me: sorry, the merchant has responded to us and informed us that the transaction was valid and asked me to seek the dispute outside Discover!!!
So, after 25 years of being a loyal customer to Discover, I decided to end this one-sided relationship right there. I just found out the true color of Discover customer service... They really don't care about their customers the way they claim. They believe that their cashback is going to keep all customers chasing them. This might've been true back in the 90s, Discover team: "wake up!" Many other cards have better cashback than yours and provide waaaaaay better (and genuine) customer service than the one you claim to have. I closed my account permanently without any intention to re-use the Discover card in my lifetime again!!!

When I retired, I made the mistake of closing all my credit accounts. Also, I paid off my home so I had no mortgage. The bottom line was, in a few years my credit was gone. Since I saw my income was better than I thought and my payments less than I had anticipated, I needed an item that required credit. But, I had no credit. So, I had to start over. I knew I'd likely have to get a secured card to start with and pay it off monthly.
So, I applied for a Discover card. Their customer service is pretty good. Otherwise, but that's where it ends. I applied for and received a secured card. One week after getting the card - no, I think it was the same day - I got by email a request for an IRS form to prowl around in my income taxes for the last two years or I would lose the card. Well, I'm not about to subject myself to that so I closed my account. Did not even activate the card.
I asked when I would get my money back. I closed my account March 30, 2022. Following was my reply: "Thank you so much for holding! Taking a look I do see that you closed the account back on 03/30/2022. It takes up to 2 billing cycles plus 10 days to receive the refund. I hope this information helps. What else can I assist you with?"
If my math is correct, that is about two and one-half months give or take a week or two and not including mail. Oh, they send you a check. They do not put it back into your checking account where they insist on getting it from you. If you apply for a card from them, any card, expect the IRS form. If you want to allow them to dig into your taxes and you want to do it, that's your business. But be aware it will happen that way. If you don't want it, don't waste your time. I now have a much better card and it is not secured and it has a nice line of credit.

A few short days later I receive notice that my card was temporarily on hold pending verification of my identity. I had to sign some forms to do so. I have been waiting almost 3 weeks with no word. Calling the security department is pointless as I get the same rehearsed speech. I could have spent the entire limit the first few days after activation then they verify? Most backwards procedure ever. My advice stay far away from Discover. Soon as I get this verification cleared I am cancelling the account without ever using it.

My FICO score is 799. Discover would not increase the miles card by $1000. to help facilitate our trip. All the phone reps were or so sad that Discover wouldn't increase, but no one was available to override the policy & procedure. FICO SCORE = 799... Other Discover card has a credit limit of $17,100 of which over $15,000 was currently available. I have cancelled both cards immediately and will never, repeat never apply for or accept another Discover card as long as I live. Even the people who answered to phones could not believe it.

I applied for a Discover card on the 20th of March and they approved me and now here it is March 31 and still no credit card. Nothing in my mailbox or anything sent to me saying they sent out my card. I had to cancel that one and order a new card. I was lied to about the new card being in by the next business day. So I would not advise letting Discover pull a credit report on anyone who has perfect credit because you’ll never receive your card.

I got approved for my Discover card a little over a year ago. In February I got a phone call stating I needed to fill out a form for SSA to verify my identity. Why didn't you verify my identity when I applied? Because of me neglecting to do something the company should have done before approval they have now froze my account. I just got the email this morning that they are freezing my account even though they did freeze my card almost a month ago. Screwing me out of the 18 months 0% APR. This is really shady behavior. A big named company like Discover should be verifying people's identity before approving any credit limits. My 18 months would have been up this September. I always paid at least my minimum balance off every month and this is how you treat your customers? You call them with a shady request. Asking for us to print the form out fill it in then take a picture of it to submit.
I did eventually reach out to customer service to confirm if it was a scam which they said it was legit. When I asked why wasn't this done before approval they said they couldn't answer that and I'd have to talk to someone else. I was approved for a limit of $500. Maybe they considered it a small amount so they didn't check my identity for that reason, I'm not sure because no one at Discover will answer my questions. I get the same results over the phone and online. It was a great card up until this lack of proper verification on their end. Maybe next time they should verify the identity before approval. In the meantime, I am still paying my card off, even though I can no longer use it, that's just the type of person I am. For anyone looking for a credit card company beware of Discover's suspicious actions. I have talked with many people about this and all of them agree that this is shady on Discover's end.

I just received a letter in the mail stating they are canceling the account due to inactivity. I called customer service to see if it was a mistake. No, it was not. They did not care that I was trying to pay down the large balance I accrued during this difficult time of COVID, they only cared that I had not racked up additional charges while trying to pay it off! I even escalated the call to a manager named Robert out of the Utah office and he confirmed. I'll NEVER refer anyone to Discover Credit Card unless they are an enemy!

Been with Discover Card since 2007. In December 2021, Google Play charged my card $84.68 for an Epoch Times android app subscription. I did not make that charge. I provided Discover Card numerous forms of documentation from the Epoch Times proving I did not have an subscription, that I did not own an android, and that Google showed no such subscription under my account. Apparently, Google Play collected money from my Discover Card and pocketed it for themselves.
Having worked in the legal field for 28 years as an investigator, I made sure I closed any excuse Google Play could give Discover. However, Discover approved the charge claiming they received a document from Google Play which convinced them that I had in fact made the charge. Not only did I never receive a copy of this alleged document, Discover never informed me what Google was claiming. Discover pushes security above everything, but allows fraudulent charges to be made against their customers. So, after 15 years, I'm closing my Discover Card account. I suggest you do the same.

This has put me into extraordinary finance distress and nearly another hospital visit for mental reasons. I called Discover about solutions and the first rep I spoke to was completely ignorant and soulless. He was of no help and just constant bad news with no light at the end of the tunnel. I spoke to another rep about possibly closing the card.
He asked if I wanted to close, I initially said yes, however asked about other options. He began speaking about options and I began to give other questions, but then I lost connection. The card was then closed upon me calling back. The $10,000 I paid toward my Discover card was after nearly 3 years of perfect, on-time payments. Again, not even a month later my limit was lowered by 80%. I struggle to pay my car and may potentially lose my apartment I share as a single father with my son. The card has been fine and customer service has been good to work with, but Discover has one huge issue—their payments/available credit takes FOREVER to update. With my other cards when I make a payment it adjusts my available credit immediately; with Discover it can take up to eight days. There’s been times where the payment has posted to my bank account and I was still left without available credit. To quicken the process you have to call and have them call your bank to verify funds so it’s a huge unnecessary inconvenience. This may be a deal breaker for me.

I'm currently working on paying down some other credit card debts on cards that have been canceled. So I forgot about my Discover Card having a zero balance with an available credit line of $2000. If you're erroneously charged. Good luck getting your money back! If the vendor responds at all. And I mean at all. Any false information. Any document that may not even resemble the transaction - they will side with the vendor! They create many consumer barriers for disputes: such as "you have to wait for the disputed amount to post to your account before we can investigate." And/or "this dispute can only be done by phone." And/or "we miscoded your dispute". And or "we can't tell you what evidence we will need in order to side on your dispute".
They will hang up on you if you ask them what they require from the vendor as part of their investigation. Refusing to be transparent about their dispute practices. BTW, I WAS a customer for 14 years. They lost me for $27.50. $27.50, 4 phone calls, 2 mistakes on their end, total of 4 hours of my time and energy. I hope that others learn from my experience and curb their use of Discover. You may have better luck going straight to the vendor to get your money back.
