I’ve used Square for about 2 years. Chose them after being charged fraudulent fees by the MERCURY Co., who eventually was sued by CHAMPS sporting goods and we joined class action suit (*got $64 back...of our over $680 losses...). So, having used Intuit Quickbooks charge processing and tired of monthly fees when we barely processed cards, Square seemed like a great alternative, no monthly fee. That is until after purchasing the POS tablets, readers etc. we discovered that some “charges” didn’t fund and showed up instead as “cash” sales (*which should have been impossible since we were only using the Square POS for electronic charge card processing sales, and another old cash register system for cash and checks). Pretty cut and dry, right? Nope.

Firstly, getting ahold of Square to discuss with a human being was nearly impossible; but once done they said it was due to “human error”. ? So, let me get this straight - a charge card is inserted in a chip reader, and processes as a cash sale, and this is my human error? Why? How? Apparently, if the charge card (blue) sales button is touched before the reader this occurs. So we’ve been diligent, yet over $650 of charge sales this year still read as “cash” (no recourse for us, no funding by Square), or processed as “other” (I don’t even know what that term means..).

Let’s say we did use the SQ as a POS and accepted cash or gift cards (* which we don’t have), how would I know if a so-called cash sale was or was not an actual cash sale? (* I wouldn’t). But, since we use an old fashioned cash register for cash and checks, and only use SQ for electronic charge card processing, I can tell. And, unless we are all retarded here the SQ charge card processing steps are flawed and errors occur where charge cards look like they are read but later do not fund and show up as cash. In the past 19 months nearly $700 of “charge cards placed in the SQ chip reader” that have later appeared as “cash sales” or “other” in the SQ report and obviously as such are not funded. Square places blame on the retailer (users error they’ve called it). Is it a scam? I can’t tell, to be honest. Not yet. We now have a camera on our SQ reader....news at 11....

I've used Square for several years, and I've noticed a real drop-off in customer service and responsible management in the last year or so. Basically, my advice for using Square is to limit the charges to smaller amounts ($500 or less), use the instant deposit feature (it's worth the extra 1%), and then move most of the money out of your account ASAP. They used to stand behind their merchants, but that's all gone now. Having been in business for over 30 years, my advice would be, that if you have a business that regularly processes larger payments, just use your own bank to process the charges - at least you know how to get in touch with them!

I had been using Square for my business for 2 years (a health clinic). Suddenly they deactivated my account and I could not process credit card payments. They had no customer service email or phone number available. I had to find an alternative credit card processor immediately. We have a high volume business. This is obviously an emergency when it happens. I still don’t know why they shut me down and it has been several days. Stay away from them!

I work in the music industry and own a major commercial recording studio in New York. Any customer can claim that they do not consent or were not aware of any charge long after it happens and there is nothing Square will do about it. My business has lost many thousands to faulty chargebacks despite providing square with:

    - Contracts and receipts of delivery and consent signed by the very client challenging the payment in the first place
    - Photo ID's of the client, as well as their personal contact info and bank card information

    - Transcripts in email and text that clearly illustrate all the terms and rates, as well as the client's consent prior to the charge being made

There is nothing that square will do to defend a small business from fraudulent chargebacks no matter how much clear evidence they provide them and how little the fraudster provides. They will simply refund them their money in full and allow the bad clients to do this to another small business.

I have processed of 300k since Oct of last year. I had 3 chargebacks out of 450 Transactions. 2 Were resolved in my favor. One I did not dispute because a customer unknowingly wanted to cancel his service. He didn't call us or take the proper steps to cancel. He just called his card company without warning. Square deactivated my account and put me on a the MATCH list so I am unable to acquire new merchant processing for my business.

There are NO live people to talk to at all, and to make matters worse they gave me a capital loan because of how great my business was doing which has now gone into default because they are no longer taking payments from my actual processing. On the surface Square has a very easy system to use. But they have Zero customer service. There is never anyone to talk to and if we are not able to find a new processor we may be forced to close our doors. Stay far away from this company if you want to be in business longer than a year.

This service must have been thought up by a bunch of computer programmers who are trying to maximize profits at the expense of service and support. They charge top dollar for a bottom tier product, although the website is very pretty. It may work well for lemonade stands and such, but if you have large transactions and deadlines to meet, steer clear.

SUPPORT. You have one option for support: email them. Then, after an hour or so, they will send you an automated/ templated response that does nothing for you. Be Prepared for basically no support if something goes wrong. Simply unacceptable for a business that only does things virtually. PROCESSING TIME. They promise 1-2 business day processing, or same day processing for and additional 1% fee. In my experience with them, there is absolutely no adherence to this promise (1-2 days). There is no refund or anything for their failure to deliver. Again, all you can do is email a robot.

Square is a corporate machine that does not add human element to their algorithm. I have processed 500,000 dollars over the last 3 years. Last night they denied a payment from a customer. The payment was approved they just said under review. Told me they needed a profile done. Had to answer several questions. Had to send an invoice. Had to send my i.d. Surprised I did not have to take a drug test.

Well they wanted the customers home address. I did a rental property for this customer. They dont understand that some customers are private. They dont want to give out their home address to someone. They are just doing business within an online world. Well the customer said, "I will do this but I'm not happy." I send them everything they want. Still no deposit. Biggest factor my customer fired me this morning. We have over 70 grand a year of business with them. I AM OVERWHELMED. Funny part the payment they suspended, 2500 dollars. Still no deposit. A lost account for 70 grand. I just sold all if my Square stock. Had 5000 shares. Invested it in PayPal. Disappointed and looking for work. That is the problem with taking human element out of the process. ** Square.

Do not use this APP. They keep your money. They can go in system remove transaction. You better never let a computer be the finger behind your money. Don't use this App. Get Vemo anything else. @cashapp they are owned by Square. I tried to purchase through Zebit twice with two declines so I added more money from my bank account. The third time the purchase went through $59 completed. But on Zebit end they didn't accept it because they don't take cash app payments. I see why. So instead of Cash App putting my money $59 back on card they kept it.

When I emailed them they said, "Oh we are putting money back." When I went into Cash App...the money was not back on my account then when I complained the guy who emailed me said, "Oh the money went back 2 days ago" which was a lie because I was watching my balance. It never returned. My history or purchases didn't even reflect the return of $59 then they went in. Removed the completed transaction $59. Left the ones from declined there but luckily I had already taken screenshots of completed transaction history and I have email.

Whenever there is a return cash app lets you know. I sent 9 emails after they never answered. You see them on Instagram giving money away. Don't dare trust them nor get Cash App by Square... We are reporting them to federal and BBB. Getting this on News so people don't get ripped off and we are coming with lawyer they can bet. You can't talk to nobody but email. Don't trust that ever. Say it was $1000. Can you imagine the drama of getting your money back. I own a business. I will. never recommend Square Cash App. Get Vemo instead. Don't even use their websites. I used Square to send some money from my credit card to my bank account. I did the same day deposit. The full $30 was deposited from my credit card into my normal bank account. I then logged on to my credit card account so that I can pay the statement, and I notice and extra charge of $15 on there, that was sent to the square company itself. I went back and checked my normal bank account to see if I had accidentally sent myself $45 or something, but nothing. When I looked at the $15 charge on my credit card closer, it has Square's address and everything. So they stole money off of my credit card. That money isn't going into MY bank account, they took that extra $15 for themselves.

I can only imagine how terrible this would be if I were an actual customer, and I bought something from someone and then noticed they were charging me these fraudulent charges. I wouldn't ever buy from that company again, even though it's not even the company's fault. But how would I know Square was stealing my money? I would just assume if it's from the same website, it must be the company I bought the item from that was crooked. So, 0/10 would not recommend, they'll probably ruin your company's name.

Ex-girlfriend that lost her damn mind. I did business with them for several years. Transactions ranging from $40-$75 or so. Once I billed a woman over $1,000 but she never paid it. Anyhow, a scammer contacted me and ended up asking for my largest package the gold and diamonds package for $3,500. They asked me to invoice them so I did. They paid it and then had "regrets" and wanted $3,400 of it back via certified check. I'd heard of the cashiers check scam where they send you a fake one but this was advanced as they had apparently stolen a card to send me funds with.

Long story short, they froze the funds along with my other (legit) funds and then ACH debited my personal checking account over $100 for the hassle. This is a tight account for an extremely small but helpful biz. I kept getting emails from a computer script that refused all replies. So I called my own personal financial institution and got everything reversed after massive hassle. This is after informing Square verbally AND in writing that they no longer have my consent (as if they ever did) to debit my personal acct.

They turned around and sent the spammy scripts again and debited the same large amount again. I even informed them my kids would starve and be forced to stay home from school due to a lack of gasoline in my car. Square didn't give the slightest of fix. You can and should do better. I should have expected this coming from a company started by the same schmuck that carelessly kicked me off twitter a dozen times already. I got an amazing bluetooth scanner from PAYPALHERE for free. Even reads the security chips embedded in Visa cards FOR CUSTOMER SECURITY. Something Square doesn't even remotely care about or invest it with its square white audio jack card reader. If you think I'm being silly, I'm not. There is absolutely a reason for those secure chips on cards in the 1st place. Find out the hard way by continuing to use Square. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

Stay away from Square - read below the nightmare they are putting me through. I and my business were the victims of identity theft. The thief opend an account with Square in March of 2019 and made 1 charge for $495 which was fradulent, afterwhich Square put me and my company on the credit card industry blacklist which is known as the TMF list or Match list. They NEVER bother to contact me about the fradulent charge and never gave me notice that I was going to be blacklisted which to me is gross negligence.

All of this was unbeknownst to me until mid August of 2019 when I went to change credit card processing companies and the new company said they could not bring me onboard because I was on the "Match" list. They explained to me what that was and suggested I ask my current processor to find out who put me on the list. They came back and told me Square put me on the list, then told me that even though I had been a top notch client for the last 5 years they would have to cancel my account and stop processing my credit charges since I was on the list.

So now I can't process ANY credit cards with my existing provider and can't get a new company to take me on because my identity was stolen and Square refuses to do anything about it. I have complied with everything Square has asked me to do - I filed an Identiy Theft report with the FTC and filed a report with the Tampa Police Department. None of that seems to matter to Square. They have a stranglehold on my small company and are putting us out of busines. I have contacted them 10 to 15 times since mid August and they give me the exact same runaround each time. "Oh we are so sorry to her about your issue, we will pass this on to our Account Services group and they will get back to you in a day or two."

I have yet - as of 9/22/19 to receive a call back from ANYONE at Square. I have tried numerous times to escalate this to management and am told every time that a manager is not available but they will call me back - again - no callback. I ask for the Accont Services manager and am told that the only way Square Customer Service can communicate with their Account Services team is via email - completely ludicrous and most likely a bald faced lie. If anyone else has experienced a similar issue with Square please contact me - I will be filing a class actioon lawsuit and will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the Florida State Sttorney's Office to try to get Square to remove their stranglehold on my business.

I processed most of my small transactions through them. Some bigger clients came through (5000$) and they shut down my account for being a "high risk." In short, there is no risk. They simply do not want to do business with anyone who does large numbers. That is their prerogative but with 20,000 passed through them and 3k paid in transaction fees I'm feeling a bit put out. I would say, look for someone else to do your transactions with. This company it seems has a habit of shutting down reputable businesses and prefers nickel and dimers.

As long as you are processing credit cards through them, they get paid and everything is fine. Once you need their assistance to protect you from a disgruntled client/costumer they pretty much fall back on their own rules and continue to play a game that cannot be won by honest business owners. Square is a powerful company but associates itself to side with dishonesty and is designed to serve themselves rather than serve their customers and allow the fair players justice. Cheaters will always prevail because as history shows...it is more beneficial to be crooked than to be honest and just. I am very sorry Square is advantageous and sides with the corrupt. How sad.

Read the terms of service very carefully, because did you know a disgruntled customer can dispute a credit card amount 4 MONTHS later and breach a signed contract? Or that Square can then reach into your pockets (your bank account), steal that money by only sending you ONE email and a few days notice that they are going to do it? In the end - the disgruntled customer had the money returned to them and Square gets to say "You lost, but thanks for playing! We don't really care about you as our customer...but please swipe the next credit card because we really like money."

Unless you plan on having every transaction remain happy and pleasant, DO NOT use Square. Once there is an issue (and it is human nature - it will happen) they couldn't care less about you. Definitely research another processing company. You will have to pay fees, but at least pay it towards a company who is not corrupt and plays on a fair & level field.

After many days, multiple half hour calls, and multiple emails with invoices and proof of the transaction, all they could tell me is that their decision was final. I got about 5 more automated emails treating me like a criminal saying they will shut my account down if I try using my personal card again.

Long story short, I had to refund my customer and charge them again using a different credit card merchant. Refunding to their AMEX and then AMEX refunding them took over a week, not including the 6 days of crap I got from Square. I bought the Paypal credit card machine and it worked flawlessly, money was in my account a day later. Square seems like a great product, but once things go wrong you will get zero customer service or even a human to help.

Talk about a greedy company. Simply to add a customer's name and email after you have taken a charge - requires you pay about $30 per month - simply to add a name to a transaction. Also with the latest update, you can't sort by your employees without having to pay $30 a month. There was no emails sent out regarding this change - they just did the change. The lust for extra money from this company is unbelievable. Everything costs... Stay away until a better alternative comes along.

This company will deduct money off your account without notice. They say they send a notice via email but they don't, they are LIARS and the WORST customer service ever.

I don't know who trains these people but the way they speak to you it is without respect and naive, they make their own decisions, they will never work with you or fix any issues you may have...It more of "Good luck, you chosen SQUARE, so deal with it". This company it's a FRAUD and sooner or later will vanish off the market. They have NO credibility nor integrity as a company, so if you think about to take SQUARE, pick someone else. 2 stars because the system works well when it is connected. But over 50% of the off-line payments were 'declined', despite being less than $20, and there is NO RECOURSE to get our money back. Found it amazing that none of the online payments were declined, but mysteriously so many of the off-line payments were apparently declined by the bank (according to Square, had nothing to do with them). Are they really trying to tell me that many people don't have an additional $20 credit limit on their account, and only the people that bought things when the internet went down? Seems a little funny to me.

We were using Square for years with no problems or complaints. Suddenly, our reader stopped working. We logged into our account and found NO notices or communications from Square about any problems with our account. We tried to call customer service, but Square does that maddening thing where they don't publish their phone number until after you are forced to click through all the help topics online, after which they give you a customer code and phone number.

So I finally was able to call, only to have a recording tell me that my account had been cancelled because they "could no longer support my business." They implied that they had detected some unscrupulous activity or something, but the recording told me I had to read the email they sent me for the exact reason. There was no option to talk to a real person, despite the obvious importance of this issue, which I think is absolutely unacceptable. The entire system seems to be set up to prevent them from having to talk to you. But the real issue is that I never received any email from them! Yes, I check my spam folder, and my trash folder. No email. So with no email, and no way to talk to a real person, I have just had my account cancelled with no explanation or recourse.

Another question I have is - why didn't I get a warning first? Or a courtesy call asking me to explain any activity they thought was suspicious? I guess I'll never know because apparently their customer service department doesn't talk to their own clients unless they feel like it. So now my business is down while I scramble today to find a new card processing provider, and Square is now on my list of companies I will never ever do business with again.

Same as above 18 month term paid it off in 6 months. Called to ask when I could be eligible for another loan. Thinking the decision was that of a loan officer in their loan department. Have a business that is thinking of using Square for credit card processing?!? BEWARE!!!

1 - When you need to reach someone - you can't. There is no phone support, no customer service, just a bunch of menu options that lead you in circles, waste your time, and end up with you having to email them and wait DAYS for responses that don't turn out to be helpful anyway.

2 - Without any violation of any terms of service, they can just deactivate your account. Case in point, we had a customer order for $35k, they paid by credit card. Apparently Square, a company that EXISTS to run through credit card payments - doesn't like credit payments when they, in turn, make a ton of money on the processing of said credit cards. Without any notice, they deactivated our account from being able to run any additional payments through. So the next week, when we had $80k in five separate payments from said customer, we had to be embarrassed that we had no way of processing that payment. Our attempts to reach out to Square were pointless (see #1 above), and instead we had to hold off on the purchase - and nearly lost the sale in the process! (Yes - $80 THOUSAND dollars of a sale)!

Here's what happened. After running the first $35k, Square - although they won't tell us this, because they refuse to give anyone a reason why their account is deactivated - apparently didn't like to assume any risk associated with the credit card charge. (Even though this is part of the ~3% they charge as a merchant services provider). So - they didn't want our business anymore. BUT - instead of reaching out for documents to support the charge/order/customer invoice/authorization, (as any NORMAL merchant services company would do), they instead sent an email, that was formatted in such a way that all that comes through when you open it is a bunch of lines (see screenshot below).

3 - Be prepared that as a Square customer, you're going to get inundated with emails about things you don't care about. Marketing emails all trying to solicit you to partake in the other products & services Square offers. Because of the volume of emails you receive from them, you will ultimately be trained to ignore most of them without giving them much time & attention. (After all - you DO have a business to run, right?!) BUT... when they send you something that you actually SHOULD read, they'll send it in a funky formatting that your email server doesn't like, so all you'll get are the "lines" referenced in #2 above (again - see screenshot). Because you've been inundated with their marketing emails, and they've trained you to tune them out - you'll thinking nothing of the email with a bunch of lines on it - and presume it's another marketing email you don't need to spend more time worrying about.

4 - When you can't reach someone by phone (see #1 above), and you ultimately email them to then wait days for their response... They'll respond that they can't help you anyway. (see additional screenshot) below.

The most interesting thing of it all is that their rates are turning out to be not so competitive, as we were easily able to find another provider who not only matched Square's rates, but has an easy online portal for us to process the payments, links for our customers to access directly to run their own payments, staff to help us actually add this to our invoices going out, so customers can pay us automatically without us even having to spend time on it, and multiple customer service areas, and a dedicated account rep who is on speed dial if I have any need to contact her.

SO, if you're in the market for something like Square, keep shopping around, I'm pretty confident you can find something much better! And if you're local to me, reach out, I know a guy! (SCREENSHOTS OMITTED BY THIS WEBSITE - FOR REVIEW PURPOSES, I HAD NO WAY TO UPLOAD THEM HERE - SORRY READERS).

We are an established company that provides manufacturing services and retails building materials to contractors and the general public...sales of $900K last year. We are a small business with seven employees. We have accepted payment strictly by check or cash for several years but recently decided to meet the growing demand for credit card payment options by creating a Square account. Easy set up and easy to use...no issues for the first two months.

Then, PROBLEMS. Served up with a big fat dose of extreme frustration Square style. Thousands of dollars in deposits suspended for days while while their “verification team” performed some abstract, unknown “security” checks. During this time (8 days on the second occasion) Square sat on our funds, and provided absolutely no reason why it had suspended deposits into our bank account. Keep in mind, these are funds from actual legitimate sales from extremely satisfied customers. No disputes, no irregularities.

The biggest problem with Square is its almost complete absence of customer service. Woe is you if you need to communicate with these people. If it has not happened to you yet, imagine this. Everything is going great when all of a sudden you receive a little alert message from Square saying “your deposits have been suspended while we look into some unusual activity with your account”. Hmmm you think, these things happen, I better give them a call to see what is up. Their support center does indeed say you can reach them by phone. Call them, find out what is going on and what needs to happen, right? Good luck.

You cannot actually talk to a real person at Square. They say you can but you can’t. I don’t just mean endless waiting times. I mean they are unreachable. To gain access to their phone support you have to download a customer code by logging in and following some seemingly simple steps. This elusive customer code is a figment of someone’s imagination at Square’s head office. We were never able to download a customer code, always got the message “not currently available for this account." Just try and reach someone by phone at Square. Try it. I dare you. There are some mythical tales out there of people having spoken to a real human at Square. We tried more than fifteen times over the course of two weeks. Try it. You’ll see.

Seeing as phone support from Square is merely a fantasy, that leaves only emailing the “support team” to get answers. This is a path of tears that goes on for days. Emailing half-automated quasi humans who have no answers and regurgitate the same rehearsed “thanks for your patience. Our verification team will notify you shortly”. All of this goes on while your legitimately hard earned funds are being held by Square... for days! No reasons, no answers. Frustration beyond description.

Those positive reviewers I see here have evidently not had the joy of being tortured by Square yet. How many negative reviews do you see here? Many many many. Beware. Square is not a good company to deal with. In fact, I would honestly have to say that they are the worst Company I have ever had dealings with. We are level headed, positive, objective and solution minded business owners. We need to soar with eagles, not gobble with the turkeys. So long Square. Your corporate model sucks. My wife and I run a very successful international travel company. Typically we take payments through online sites, PayPal, etc. We figured that having some credit card processing capabilities might be a good idea. Some years ago my wife had a business in the arts field and used Square for card processing and had some decent experiences so she figured that working with this company now might be a good idea. I want to preface this review with the fact that I am a very experienced business person and a very successful former CEO of high tech companies. Not some troll or guy who doesn’t know what he is doing. This is the real deal.

We opened a new account with Square and then the horror show started. The experiences we got were by far some of the worst customer service experiences we have ever encountered in over 40 years if being in business. CEO Jack Dorsey should be ashamed of himself for runners no such a poorly run company. Seriously, this is a disgrace to the world of business. Right after our account was opened and while we were in the middle of processing a very legitimate payment, the account was shut down. This really upset our important customer.

We tried to contact Square and we received nothing but a big run around. There is no one to talk to, no one to provide any kind of service. All you do is hit the big fat Square wall. So what a waste of time it is to even try to work with this company. Go online and read the reviews about them. They are awful and most reviews all mention the same thing — terrible service. We ended up taking our business over to PayPal and we’ve had no problems. My best advice as an experienced business person is to not do any business with this company and avoid the big hassles.

Wanted to verify my business and held my funds. I've had Square register for several years. I use my Android phone to process credit card payments. I was in the hospital in January for two weeks and was unable to work till the end of May 2019. I started working in June and started using my Square Register on my phone in June. I noticed that my deposits were not going into my business checking account. I tried to deal with the Internet on my phone and could not get through to the company. I do not have internet at home and my laptop is old we're talking about 6, and I need to update the internet service.

I tried to call the company and they do not have a customer service. I finally found a number that said if I had a customer code they would answer a question. I didn't know I had a customer code. I found on my Square app that they had a customer contact messenger. Next to that a live chat popped up and I try to deal with that live person typing in my situation on my tiny little phone. All I got was robotic answers from the person stating that I had to deal with the compliance Department regarding my hell deposits. They told me I had to verify my business. Just took me by surprise because I had to verify my business in order to get an account with them.

They told me to go on dashboard on Squareup.com and finish the verification process. I went online and my tiny little phone to the square app and found my dashboard. I found the need to verify your business button and I clicked on it. There were several questions they ask me and I answered them as best as I could. They wanted my business registration and they wanted to see the forms that I had four customers to sign as I use their credit cards. Some I do have a form for my U.S. Mail clients. I also swipe peoples credit cards and they signed with their fingertip on my phone. I filled out all the information and then it said I had to upload my business registration in the form that the people sign for credit card payments.

Being 65 years old and been on computers for a long time, I had very stressful time trying to deal with taking pictures and uploading them. Well their app wouldn't allow me to upload anything. I took a picture of the documents and it wouldn't upload. So I dragged my computer out of my house into the library and I could not get online. I went to a private home, and this is after of week of frustration, the person realize that my laptop hasn't been online so the updates didn't take for my Internet Explorer. I tried to deal with that and that did not work out well. The person's home that I was with help me on their computer to go to the dashboard the questions I answered were there and they uploaded a letter that I designed 2 give them the information they needed and as a letter of formal complaint.

My funds were being held as hostage, because they didn't have paperwork! Well if they had a problem with my account they should not have allowed the credit cards to go through instead of receiving payments from my clients. Once I receive the payment I service the customer and they are on their happy way. They do not have a customer service department. There is no one to call if you have a situation. Everything is done through the internet, supposedly through their emails in their message chats.

I couldn't get the information through to them that I don't have internet at home, I use my phone to process my credit cards and I expect to have my deposits within the 1 to 2 business days in my business checking account. There was no one for me to get through and it was very frustrating upsetting and actually set back my health situation. As of today I still do not have my funds deposited into my checking account.

This is a poor way of doing business. I'm sure on there and they don't have to deal with customers and only deal with people that they take a percentage from that they don't have issues. But it's very frustrating on my end and I'm sure many other people that my issue was dragged out over a week interrupting my business schedule and not receiving a resolution for my situation.

If I was able to call someone and get the information sent to them quicker some way other than the internet. I wouldn't be writing this bad review. They did not take care of me as a customer. This has gone on way too long and I have ended my relationship with them. They finally emailed me and told me that it only could be resolved for my dashboard. If I didn't like the way they did business guess I should refund my customer and get an alternative payment. Well you know that's not going to happen, because my clients have their product or service and there's no way of contacting them and inconveniencing my customer through the U. S. Mail. It's almost $300, but I'll take the loss. And they lost me as a customer. VERY UPSET

You may think you're happy with them for the first few weeks until they pull something off like this with your money. Try calling them - it's a joke. I have operated 2 businesses over the past 19 years. Every time a customer handed me a credit card my heart sank. The fees were only half the frustration. I felt like I was being scammed for years and obviously I was since I just received a check from a class action lawsuit. Then along came Square. I thought for sure it was too good to be true. A flat rate which meant I could take American Express as well? Well it is true. I can switch between my 2 businesses on my cell phone to run credit cards. Easy as pie. My complaint is the lack of customer service. Life is good until you have an issue. They are only open Mon-Fri and they do not have 24 hour support.

I think my account has been compromised and it still has been a few days since I contacted them and no response. I emailed them on a weekday as well. You have to search for a contact number. I'm in a panic. I don't have time to search for anything. I need to speak to someone now. We are dealing with credit card numbers and bank accounts. So in closing, this is a great product until you have an issue.

Square refused to deposit the funds into my account and, in fact, notified me they were closing my account and holding my funds for THREE MONTHS. I attempted simply to refund the client, but Square then said it would take TWO WEEKS to credit the client back. They have done serious financial harm to my 40+ year old business as well as damaged my business reputation. Everything I sell is fully compliant with all local, state and federal laws yet they have chosen to restrict my legal commerce and intend to hold my capital with ZERO compensation. This company is openly discriminating against many individuals and committing fraud by retaining funds illegally for so long.

The replacement worked for a couple weeks then did the same thing. Would work for about 2 hours, then would have to be recharged, then it had to be on the charger constantly. I only use this on weekends, and only about 5 months out of the year. The rest of the time it sits in my money bag. It won't even hold a charge long enough for you to process a single card now, even if it's plugged in. At this point I can only use their free charger to process cards! Save your money!!

I called fake Cash App support phone number 2 weeks ago without knowing and got scammed $2100. If Cash App customer support was more reachable and more helpful I might’ve been able to get my money back but their slow response and bad customer support made me lose the most urgent time I could’ve tried to get my money back.

When I leave, the money is already in my Square account and in my bank account the next day. That is a tremendous bargain for less than 3% processing fee and quick payment. I tried to reply to it and provide evidence on Square website but their website does not work or allow me to move to next step. It is stuck on one page. I tried to call them, after going through 5000 phone options and finally getting a phone number to call, it put me on hold and then asked for me to hang up. They said someone will call me back shortly. When they finally called back, there was no one on the other end. I said hello three times before they hung up. I get an email a minute later saying that I did not answer my phone which is crab because I did and I have been using my phone all morning.

Square does their best to prevent people from calling them. Their so called automated online chat assistant is just garbage and keeps giving you useless information that you already know. IF someone is dealing with few thousand dollars of disputes, they would want to talk to some live ** person not your piss poor automated system. Your system does not give me the answer I want with regards to details of disputes and I can't wait ** 3 months for the ** bank to review my evidence. Square is good at taking 2.9% processing fee which is highest in the market and make billions, but when it comes to helping your customers, you use a third world phone and online system. It is just fantastic service.

Updated on 05/30/2019: Having researched a payroll tool, I stumbled upon Square. On the face of it, they offered everything I needed so I initiated an account. I immediately received an email from an account exec named Sydney **. And that was that. None of my questions were answered and I was basically ignored. Tried emailing (6 times), calling (10 times) but none were replied to. Even worse, phone calls were purposefully dropped by reps that didn't know the answer or didn't care to answer any questions. And the aforementioned rep, Sydney ignored all of the emails sent to her directly.

Making things worse, having realized that it's a one star company and the advertised service won't be provided, I requested for my account and my info on file to be deleted. These, repeated, requests were ignored as well. And instead, I received an email, which turned out to be a promotional email. This means that my email was added to their email list without my consent. And my details were probably packaged and sold to the highest bidder (yes, this is exactly how they do it). This was a horrible experience and I advise anyone looking into this company to stay away. The level of contempt and incompetence is simply unmatched.

Original Review: Count: 7 dropped calls, 0 solutions/ assistance provided. 2 weeks in total of chasing them without receiving any assistance, 1 answered emails (out of 5 sent; a response of "we'll get back to you", without actually following through with the promise). Their customer service is conveniently handled by a Call Center, so that they wouldn't have to account to anyone. The reps in the center are clueless, on top of being rude. I was hung up on 7 times and I highly doubt it was due to a technical error. I was told lies and when asking for a ticket number, timeline or anything factual, the rep simply hung up (a rep named Paul did it twice).

Recommendation to dealing with these type of "service providers: Download a conversation recording app; And more importantly, DON'T USE SQUARE! There are a lot of alternatives out there and you'll be saving yourself time and nerves, while actually receiving a service. SQUARE IS A JOKE! You will only be wasting your time. And if you're in doubt, I'm obviously not the only one having a issues with them (average 2 stars all over the net).

After about a year of using their system and getting their new retail system set up and all my inventory into the system they suddenly disabled my account due to not abiding by their rules and regulations. They have kept my deposit which luckily was not a large amount but I feel how they treated me as a customer is completely wrong.

When I called and spoke to a service rep which I was only able to contact the payroll section of their company because their lines were down that day which seems to be a common problem he told me that I was canceled because of the products that I sell being a vape and smoke shop and letting them know this before buying their system. I was told there would be no problem. Now a year later they changed their rules to target stores like mine. The worst part about it is that they canceled my account on a Friday where finding a new company is almost impossible and leaving me without a POS system to continue sales as now the system I bought is utterly worthless. They took my money then tossed me into the street and will not speak to me.

Their customer service is basically non-existent. I've emailed them many times and keep getting the same response from a bot stating that I violated sections of their terms of use without any further explanation. They won't even speak to me nor give me a customer code to contact customer service anymore. I cannot use their credit card system for my small business because they are unable to verify my identity and I have a business EIN number with my own social security number. I was told to call the IRS and figure out what they show as my name and address. The IRS even sent me a letter verifying my LLC information. Square up rep stated the decision is final. Apparently a born and raised US citizen with a global entry card and an LLC business with a letter from the IRS doesn’t exist! Yeah Square, I’m a fake person! Thanks for not helping to even try and solve the issue. I went with Merchant One. Amazing customer service and cheaper rates!

My customer somehow found out that, if you pay someone through Cash App and then disputed it, cash out will refund the money. Regardless if the money was rightfully yours or not they take the side of whoever dispute. Which cause them to then deactivate your account and pretty much tell you, "Oh well." So then that means whoever is paying you got off with free work. Not cool at all.

I wanted to understand their process when first asked to verify business information (information that was sent when account was set up) but monthly they randomly lock the account and request the same information. After sending 3 months in a row I actually found a way to contact them via phone buried in their web site! The division that answers is a place holder in charge of making sure you can't talk to anyone that can do anything! They forcefully commingled funds via two different companies with two separate accounts.

They pierced though corporations which is wholly illegal in every state! After deactivating my account (I am sure in retaliation for my complaints via email and customer service place holders) they processed charge backs and because they left me NO way to log into a deactivated account I can not print out the invoice (via the invoice authorization paid direct from client) I can't dispute the information directly. After a scathing email and threatening to contact my lawyer they answered via a reply...but they can't send me MY INFORMATION, MY INVOICES or my client's multiple charges! This company is crap.

Wish we could leave negative stars. This company is a mess. We have used them for over two years and we got our first chargeback in January of this year. Square gave the bank back the money for them to hold in an Escrow account while we disputed the chargeback. We were constantly harassed by Square to pay them the $9650 that they never should have gave to the bank in the first place. Square then stole money from another company that my name is on but is completely separate from the first one and are not allowed to share funds. It took three weeks to fix that screw up. Yesterday the dispute was decided in our favor since the customer was in the wrong.

After I got the email that we won the case Square sent me an email asking for money for the chargeback when we didn't owe them a dime. We also use them for payroll. They have misfiled our state taxes for almost a year. I have contacted several times and sent all the paperwork and yet I got another notice from the state that the late fees caused by Square that they said they would pay have not been paid. I tried to call them about payroll which I pay around $40 a month for and my customer code has been deactivated! This is the shadiest business I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with.

I used Square because it's supposed to be the best point of sale app out there, the free card reader is a bonus also... But mainly, I was attracted to the instant deposit feature... I dont like waiting "x amount of business days" for the bank to give me my money. It's funny, they can always take it right away cant they? Anyway, I set up my account. Gave them my SSN, verified bank account and finally linked the debit card associated with the bank I have linked. Per their website, this should enable the instant deposit feature, which again, is why I signed up.

3 or 4 days later I accepted a payment for a sale of 76 dollars and it was approved. I went into my account settings and enabled the instant deposits switch. I also set the auto deposit schedule to daily. So, I go to my deposits tab, I see the transaction and select it. Underneath the 76 dollars there is a greyed out box that says "Instant deposit unavailable". YES my debit card and bank support instant deposit per their website, it was over the 25 dollar minimum, and well under the 10,000 maximum. I was within all the requirements stated on the website.

I close the app and check it about 2 hours later, to my surprise the instant deposit button was now blue and clickable. I was shocked, so I clicked it and to my amazement the Box immediately turned gray and again said instant deposit unavailable. Are you kidding me? I feel that is crap, complete crap. If there is some kinda policy where the first payment has to be reviewed for a few days then it should be clearly be stated on their website WHICH IT IS NOT.

I know they don't care if one of their customers is angry because they are a multi-million-dollar business but that's exactly why it sucks so bad. I signed up for the app specifically to get the instant payments. I was expecting and planning to have that 76 bucks immediately not into business days. The website says instant deposit works even on weekends, it's a Saturday. So I thought I would still get it today anyway. However, now that apparently it needs to be reviewed for 1 to 2 business days I'm going to have to wait today tomorrow Monday and Tuesday. So much for the instant deposit... Unbelievable.

Oh I almost forgot, after the 1 to 2 business days it also could take another one to two business days for it to actually get to your account so I could be waiting until Wednesday with the way it's looking. I know there's a passage somewhere on a message board from one of their employees or on their FAQ/instructions section of their website that says something about being able to get money right away after signing up for the app and advertised just how easy and convenient it was.

But what can I do? Complain? Who's going to read the complaint? An employee getting paid 10 bucks an hour to read it and send a generic response back? Nobody cares. Even if the CEO Reddit he wouldn't care either. I read and read and read to be sure that I could get the money right away. What really makes me mad is that after a few hours the button was blue and let me click it just to tell me to screw off again, what the hell? I know what the employees would say to this anyway, "All accounts are subject to review. It's how we ensure the safety of all of our customers." Blah blah blah blah blah. Just really convenient it happened on the very first payment. Damn it. I bet they still take the extra 1 percent for the instant deposit fee also.

Square is a total joke. I have used them for a long time now to process over $50,000 a month in credit card transactions thru my website where customers purchase merchandise from me. Whenever there is a charge dispute in the case where the cardholder claims to not have any knowledge of the purchase yet I have complete and full documentation of how the customer purchased hundreds of dollars of items from me, Square just simply sides with the cardholder and pulls the funds out of my account. In the end of it all I am out hundreds of dollars in merchandise and shipping expenses while the cardholder received the items and gets every penny returned to them without a doubt.

It has happened several times and Square does not offer any way to protect the store owner from this scam. While it’s no sweat off the back of Square. They receive thousands of dollars of processing fees a month from me but absolutely do not stand behind me in any way when something like this happens. Beware because they do not hesitate to pull funds out of your account and give it back to the cardholder without even looking into the matter at all.

I only do a few local art shows a year. ** is my business. To all my customers at S.F. Cherry Blossom Fest in April 2018: Not one single customer contacted me to notify me that they were not charged on their credit card. I know there are a few honest people out there! That's because Square took my money. Here's my story: I apparently wasn't aware that I had my iPad switched onto cash payments, so when I had my customers sign their names after they swiped their credit cards, it looked like all the sales went through.

After the show was done and I went home, I saw only a couple of sales actually went through and all the others vanished. I contacted Square the next morning and was advised there was NOTHING they could do - even though I asked if there was a way they could examine my iPad - hoping to retrieve any information. Instead, I was promised $500 credit towards credit card fees. Apparently I 'misunderstood' when a Square agent later explained credit was towards $500 worth of sales I made. About a $20 credit?

But here is evidence that points to the very real possibility that Square took my money; Eventually, I spoke with manager Emmanuel, who explained that the first agent should have told me that there actually was a way that their engineers could have gotten into my iPad and retrieved this information so they could have contacted my customers and verified the truth of my sales! Emmanuel told me (conveniently for Square) they couldn't have their engineers do this now because I had received a refurbished iPad, (from Apple) which Square would have needed to verify the information from! - (How did they know I had recently received a new iPad?)

Now today, March 6, I called Square and wanted to take up the offer from just over a month ago from Emmanuel hoping they might be able to apply the credit towards their credit card machine that prints because this would be hard evidence that a sale went through instead of just relying on something invisible. The Square agent and management said I misunderstood Emmanuel's message, and they will not apply the free processing fees for up to $1000 and the case is closed! Right after the conversation, I received this email from Square that it's been more than 2 weeks since they last heard from me, so the case is closed! I trusted Square. How can they do this? How disappointing.

No reason given - I had to call to get that. Apparently our business activity, which they describe as car hire, is banned. I asked for the details of where this is explained in the Terms and Conditions - I'm still waiting. Apparently Square don't bother to check a company's business activity (or, presumably, anything else) because they aim to set up the account quickly 'to provide good customer service.' Is it good customer service - to supplier or customer in the card transaction - to set up firms without checking them and then cancel them without notice? Or would it be better customer service to do these checks beforehand?

The lack of due diligence conducted by Square before allowing cards to be processed should be alarming to anyone who pays or receives payments this way. It is extremely questionable. If you are a Square customer I recommend you call them to see if you have inadvertently contravened their complicated terms, otherwise you risk, as we did, having thousands of pounds tied up with Square for 6 months that you cannot access. We have been with Square for about 1.5 years, but have only used their service maybe a few dozen times. We were given NO notification in our account, but they sent our company an email telling us to refund 2 large website sales due to possible fraud. One was from 15 DAYS previously and was fully processed, the other we had NOT even received the funds for. So they SUSPENDED the account for our retail website. Mind you, this suspension is due to an error THEY MADE. They are asking us to refund funds that are either long since processed (products delivered) or have not even been transferred to us from them. So, it is quite obvious their security team/software is not doing the job we rely on them/it for AND they obviously do not know where funds are located.

Trying to contact them is the most ridiculous process we have ever had to deal with. Not only do you have to find a code, but finding the code requires you go into their community and ask the question. We had to read directions from a support specialist and the last two directions were to click on "I Don't See my Issue" and then click "choose to call us". Which then provides you with a long customer code. We could not find the code anywhere else unless we went through the Customer Support Center/community. We finally get the code and make a second call (the first call informed us that we needed a code to talk with someone).

After we inputted the code, we had to wait to find out in a list of what number to push to talk to a person, because none of the selections addressed our extremely important issue. Then we were informed that the support team is ONLY AVAILABLE M-F (side note---like ALL others, our website runs 24/7)...meanwhile, our account is suspended for our retail website. You know, the item that pays the Square fees, that pay the Square support team to not be available during a serious monetary issue?! In the end, Square made at least two significant security errors, will not provide the means for a customer to find out information on the issue, they want our company to pay for it, and they want funds returned that were never paid. Our faith in the reliability and support from Square is now completely demolished. We will be moving to another card handler. Bye Bye stock too.

They will set you up and allow you to process and deposit several payments into your bank account, building up trust that everything is working. Then out of nowhere they will deny you the ability to deposit money you received from your customers into your bank account until you provide them with additional sensitive and detailed financial information, such as your corporate account balances and financial history. No explanation on why they need this information and why it wasn't requested upfront before setting up your account. It's bait and switch and if it's not illegal, unethical at best.

If you tell them you are not comfortable providing this information, they will tell you the only way to handle this is to cancel the transaction and contact your customer to pay another way. The issue is our customers are long gone and we can't get in touch with them. I'm out over $3,100.00 in transactions. This is theft, you can't bait someone into processing your payments and then hold their money until you get request "additional information" that is not necessary for this service.

They will fall back and say it's part of their service agreement, that they can request "additional information". However, when I asked again why it is necessary for them to see our corporate transaction history and information that has nothing to do with Square, the representative said she could not answer that, when I requested to speak with someone that could provide me that answer, she said there wasn't anyone else to speak with. I pushed the issue and ended up with their counsel's information listed below.

Conclusion - They are holding 3,100.00, that I can't get out of the account and if I give it back to my customers, I can't get in touch with to reissue the invoice to. That means, they stole and won't release my money until I provide them with information they have no reason or right to. I'm sure we are among numerous companies with the same issue. So in 3 months they say, "You're allowed to deposit your funds but you don't have a linked bank account," the confirmation emails they say they send to link a new bank account NEVER get received (after making 50 attempts trying to get it) and you still cannot contact anyone to help. They are THIEVES. I have now read hundreds of reviews like this and I cannot believe there is not some sort of class action suit against them. I will be taking legal action and I think everyone who has dealt with this should as well. Absolutely TERRIBLE company - ripping off young entrepreneurs and small businesses for tens of thousands of dollars.

Please consider another company if you’re a small business and depend on getting paid when a customer pays you. Square will hold your money for as long as they want to. So at the end of the week I’m the one footing the bill to pay my employees, my expenses and material bills. Wouldn’t be a problem if Square wouldn’t just let $10k sit in an account and you have no access to it.

Try to call someone and can’t get a real person. Send an email, and you get the same generic automatic reply every time. Sending you to their FAQs about depositing the money to your bank. And when none of it applies to you and you still have no idea why they're holding it and try and contact them again, you get the exact same email sent back telling you to read the FAQs. Just go with a different company. Save yourself the trouble and risk of losing your business. There are better alternatives out there! PayPal worked much better, I decided to give Square a try because it seemed more convenient. Biggest mistake I’ve ever made. PayPal has never given me a problem and I don’t know why I was dumb enough to fall for the Square scam.

I’ve been with SQUARE for several years. Each year increasing to $770,000 processed for 2018. HUGE problem is, when a customers is not happy with the medical service we have completed/provided, all they have to do is file a credit card dispute with their bank. Square bows down immediately and pulls the large amount out of your account, holds it for "the dispute" for about 90 days, all the while collecting interest on your money you already paid them a service fee for.

Then if you call you will get a millennial with no common sense nor client service and does absolutely nothing for loyal clients. They just don’t give a damn. I’m seeking a better processing company after this last time where they have 4200.00 for the next 90 days. AND their interest fee is higher than most. Extremely worthless customer service. I don’t even know if that is legal to withdraw and hold someone’s money for 90 days on a complaint??? I’m looking into the legalities of this.

I rec'd an e-mail telling me that I should refund the transaction and process it with another company. I tried to contact them by phone and e-mail more than 20 times only to get the same e-mail message.

Finally on Jan 24th I was able to speak to them over the phone. What I was told was that their "Review Department" decided not to process the transaction as they were uncomfortable with the information I provided them. I then asked to speak to the "Review Department" so that I could provide them with further information and get this straightened out. I was told that isn't possible. I then asked what information were they uncomfortable with and was told she (Chelsey) wasn't able to give me that information. This company has $4,000 of my money and are withholding it illegally. I wished I would have found this site before I would have opened an acct with them. I think that all of the people on here should file a lawsuit against them. I will be looking into taking legal action against them.

As pissed as I am, I am sharing my experience so that other small businesses don't get screwed like I did. I'm a mom and a small business owner. After a year of using PayPal to accept my payments I decided to branch out to credit cards. Everything went well with Square to begin with... until I needed to contact them. It's not easy, it involves research and jumping through hoops. I received a large order and was excited, but I also decided to be smart and reach out to AMEX to make sure the card was legit. Amex told me because I didn't have the full credit card number they could not check on their end and I should contact Square to get the information needed.

When I finally figured out how to get Square on the phone and spoke to them they told me they can't see the credit card number either and they can't confirm with AMEX, but they assured me that there were no red flags on their end and that if the billing and shipping match there shouldn't be a problem and they also let me know if anything did go wrong it was on me. Ummmm, ok why am I paying them if they can't even protect me? I wondered. I mailed the merchandise and made sure to get tracking and signature.

A few months later I get an email from Square saying that a bank reached out to them and that this sale was under investigation and the client said they had not made the purchase. I was so pissed. So Square said I could provide evidence and challenge the bank. Luckily I had all of the evidence needed... Matching billing and shipping, email correspondence and proof of shipment and delivery signature. I got an email yesterday that the bank sided with their own customer... (Why am I not surprised?) And that I need to pay Square back in full. I emailed requesting a payment plan, they responded giving me some options and then debited my account the full amount. WTF!!! Thanks for protecting a small business owner and thanks for taking funds out with no time wasted and putting me at negative. I'll never work with them again. That's not taking care of your customer.

We submitted all the required information and received a congratulatory email welcoming us to their payroll. After that we submitted all of our financial information for our bank and the financial information for the individuals we had to pay. We processed the complete payroll as instructed by Square. Square immediately took the money out of our account to cover the direct deposit payroll.

Once we were done with that a few hours later we received an email from them requesting more documents. 1 item on their list we did not have available so we called them to ask if this was going to be a problem and they continued to demand we submit information that we told them we could not provide. At that point I requested to cancel the account so that I can process the payroll another way. I request a refund and to cancel the account. They advised me that a refund was not an option? I was extremely confused. They advised me in writing also I saved the email, that I can not have a refund. They also advised me in email, that I can not have a payroll account with them and my account has been deactivated? At this point I am a little past confused. Of course all I wanted now was my money back.

I went to their dashboard where it advised me to write out checks for my contractors, however the money was still not in my bank account? I never wrote the checks because they have the money, so if I would have wrote the checks the checks would have bounced. Needless to say I tried to call them and my code was deactivated. I tried to get a new code and a message came up that said, "No telephone support is available for your account. Please email instead." WOW! So basically they still have my money to this day. $1113.00 to be exact and the most confusing part of all that made me cry with tears was that, I later found out that in their fine print when you agree to deal with them, they have it written that they can pretty much do whatever they want at their discretion. Yes including keep your money. Be careful with the internet folks. It's a lot of bait and switch out here and it's all just a click away.

We signed up for Square to process payments for credit cards. We had no issues for several years till one day we had 2 deposits of $5000 and $1900. They froze our account and asked us what our company did. They had NEVER asked us when we signed up! And the type of business is in our company name. Hard not to know what we do! They proceeded to close our account and freeze our funds for 30 days. That was August 1 and as of November 14th we still do not have our money.

We got another generic email last week stating they will keep our money another 60 days. This is fraud. We are a small business and need our funds! We have emailed countless times and all we get is a generic email. There is no way to talk to them on the phone or have an email to a real person who will directly correspond with you. Do not use this service. At some point you will regret it. They will steal your money too. Remember, they have access to your checking account and will debit money from your account like they did with us.

I have a new phone and got the notification to accept the transfer so I did. When I opened the app, I was not able to cash it out. My debit card was no longer accepted and every bank transfer attempt failed. I tried refunding the $800 and it failed too.

I contacted support and they answered back via email saying they closed my account suspecting a violation of terms but couldn’t disclose why and their decision was final. Meanwhile, I needed to cash out the funds left in my account. Well, I can’t cash them out. It keeps failing. I just want the money refunded. We have bills to pay. This company is a joke. Did the photoshoot, delivered the pictures to customer. Once the customer got the final product / service the customer complained to BOFA that charge is fraudulent. Square did nothing to help our business and despite all the evidence we submitted sided with customer and BOFA. Square did a chargeback and took $400 out of our business account and we got $34.99 insufficient funds penalty on top of that. Expressed my concerns to Square and their reply was, “You should always have the funds equal to deposit in your account.” Now I am taking the customer to small claims court. Never use Square to grab payment from customers. If there is a issue Square will always side with the customer.

I opened a Square (or Squareup) account for my online business. We average $3,000 per day in sales and I liked how easy it was to use Square, and that payments were deposited to my bank the next day. After 4 days of sales without any issues, Square decided to put my deposits on hold while they requested more information from me about my business. I provided all information within hours, and they said the review process would take 1 to 2 days and that deposits were still held until the review was complete. Very annoying, but I understand - I just wish they would ask questions up front instead of allowing me to run transactions first and then deciding there is some problem that requires them to hold funds.

After 2 business days, I had not heard from Square, so I called them. The customer service rep was polite but basically couldn't tell me anything except to keep waiting. I waited all weekend and when Monday morning rolled around (today), I emailed them. The rep was polite and said he would escalate my case to get it done more quickly. By this point, I had $18,841.72 being held by Square for sales over a period of 6 days. Three hours after the conversation with the customer service rep, I noticed that my account showed it had been deactivated. I didn't receive a call or an email or anything, just a red alert icon that said my account was shut down. I tried to call Square and they would not give me an option to speak with anybody, the only options were to listen to recordings about how my account was deactivated, funds would be held, etc and to reference an email they claim to have sent.

I went back to my inbox and there wasn't an email, but apparently it got picked up by a spam filter because it showed up later. The email was as vague as the recordings, basically they deactivated my account because they cannot support my business, and funds were to be held for 90 days! There is no option to call them, the email actually says that phone support is only for customers with active accounts. I had one until you morons closed it! So my only recourse is to wait 3 months for funds to be deposited, hire a lawyer and get them to pressure Square into releasing the funds early, or simply refund all my customers and try to run the sales through again using a better method.

Square is a joke, their customer service is non-existent, and they tried to kill my cash flow for no reason. I didn't have any chargebacks, the transactions were all valid, there really isn't any reason for them to flag my account as a risk unless they just can't handle the sales volume we do, which I doubt is the case. But if it was, it seems like a reputable company would reach out first and let a customer know there was an issue, instead of just shutting everything down and sending some generic email that says we're keeping your money for 3 months and you can't do anything about it. These guys are a total joke, do yourself a favor and get with a real credit card processor. If you use Square, make sure you don't count on those funds to be deposited into your account, they could email you one day and tell you that they are keeping them for as long as they want to for no reason.

On October 1, 2018, my first day using Cash App, I received $750 and I tried several times to move the money out of the Cash App account. Every transaction "failed" for my "protection." I decided to Google "cash app customer service" and the first returned search provided a toll-free number (855-349-6628) for Cash App customer service (I actually took a screenshot of the search results). I called the number and explained my problem regarding the failed transactions. I was asked various questions. At this point I was not suspicious because I initiated the call after performing a Google search. However, after being placed on hold for several minutes notifications began appearing on my phone, one of which was a notification stating that my bank debit card had been unlinked from my Cash App account. I immediately disconnected from the number I had called and I realized something was wrong.

By this time I was locked out of my Cash App account because the PIN had been changed. Within minutes my Cash App account had been depleted of $750 and had been cashed out to a Huntington Bank account. I could only email Cash App customer support and explain the situation. I immediately contacted Huntington Bank and that bank took a report to initiate a fraud investigation, and provided me with a reference number. Cash App customer support bounced several emails back and forth with me before finally sounding like it had a reasoned grasp of the situation. On October 10, 2018 Cash App customer support sent me an email stating that it had concluded its investigation and that after opening a new Cash App account I would be reimbursed through a "secure transaction."

On October 11, 2018 I provided Cash App customer support with the requested information (including a copy of my driver's license). No reimbursement has been forthcoming. On Friday, October 26, 2018 I Tweeted about my Cash App fraudulent transaction and the shoddy actions taken by Cash App customer support. Immediately after making the Tweets Cash App customer support contacted me and asked me for my email address so it could look at my situation. I provided the email address and in response I was told that my case was being "escalated" for review by a "team member" who would reach out to me shortly. Throughout the past weekend I was told that I would be contacted "momentarily" or "shortly." This did not occur.

This morning (Monday) I contacted Cash App customer support through Twitter and I was asked for my email address again! The last word this morning from Cash App customer support is: "Thanks for that info, Scott! The team working on your case is just getting here for the morning. We've notified them again, and they'll be reaching out to you soon. Thanks for your patience, they'll follow up soon!" It's ironic that none of my attempts to move my money out of the Cash App account were successful because of Cash App declining to process the transactions for my "protection," yet hackers were successful on the first attempt to deplete my account. The $750 may not seem like a lot of money, but the theft of the money has put me one month behind in my rent. I certainly DO NOT RECOMMEND the use of Cash App, owned by Square.

On July 23rd I had a customer’s associate pay an invoice of $10,000.00, the transaction was from American Express to my Square account. Everything had gone as smooth as expected. Transaction made that same day. On Oct. 22nd three months later Square gave me notice that they would be withdrawing $10,000.00 from my bank account for unknown reasons, unknown as to why? An option as to a resolution was presented after that had charged my Square account the $10,000.00 and made a request to my bank for the $10,000.00 also. The representative I spoke with were misleading as to what was occurring and later had to be cleared up by a supervisor. Basically, we are taking $10,000.00 from your account and that’s that.

I contacted my customer and he verified with his associate the associate did not dispute the charge with American Express and the associate further sent me an email stating he did not dispute the charge and that American Express initiated the verification with Square on their own. I provided Square with that documentation and they said they called American Express and the challenge had not been cancelled. I forwarded that information to the associate and he said he called American Express to make sure it was cancelled. The dispute department of Square is very sensitive to you telling them the truth that they do not want to hear. They asked for written information and they will not rely upon it.

I went further and contacted American Express and they wanted to talk to Square and resolve the issue, but Square had rescinded all my phone privileges and we could not get though. Square has cut off all communication except email and 24 hours to 5 days to respond. At this point Square has suspended all recurring billing to all my customers and I must find a new service provider and redo all the clients with recurring monthly invoices. I will state that I have never had an issue with Square prior to this and did not become concerned until I witnessed Square’s reluctance to settle the issue and further their access to my bank account to withdraw funds is unbelievable. Further, I did not really get alarmed until I started reading all the other people that is having virtually the exact circumstance with Square.

On July 24th I had a customer pay her invoice of $702.04, the transaction was with Square. Everything had gone as smooth as expected. Transaction made that same day. On September 4th, a month and a half later square gave me notice that they would be withdrawing $702.04 from my bank account for unknown reasons, unknown as to why? Not an option as to a resolution, an argument, explanation, nothing! Just were taking $702.04 from your account and that’s that.

What I later found out is that my customer who was elderly, and who had been satisfied with my services and the transaction of paying her bill, was now concerned when she got her Credit Card statement, the $702.04 charge that showed up on her credit card statement was vague in description on what it was and from where, again another Square problem I believe. So being concerned and she honestly didn’t remember the transaction, she argued with the credit card company Chase to refund her the $702.04. After getting notice from Square through my email I traced back and called my customer immediately of what was going on and what to expect. She had apologized and said she would call Chase and have them return the funds ASAP and close out the invoice, and she did.

On September 10th Square sent me an email that they no longer can support processing any future transactions from my company, again no reason to why? Nothing? All I can think of is that the charge looked fraudulent by not using the card swipe attachment, Well Square, don’t sell the idea of being able to process cards if you’re just going to screw your customers out of their funds in the end and not give your customer an opportunity to explain the situation. Or make it policy to always use a card reader. Even though I’ve never had any issues with any fraud. I read Squares terms of the use agreement and I don’t fit any of the services that they list to be a concern.

Now the problem is I have a customer who paid me (Square), and claims that she has called chase and instructed them to credit back the amount owed, Chase claims (I have paper work documentation for this transaction) that they credited the account back on the 7th (I have letter documentation proving this, Chase Ref# ** Chase 1-888-862-3267) as of today Square won’t respond to any emails from me and or phone messages, they stole my customers payment and won't credit my account. This organization is NOT about customer service and they offer no help at all. Stay away from this company. It's not worth the headache!

I really hope this review helps someone who went through the same incident as myself. This review is for people who had three (small or big) cash transactions taken out of their checking accounts. I am not a merchant. I do not have the Square Up app, nor the Square Cash app on my phone. I deal with many merchants that use Square Up. I paid a merchant that uses Square Up. I swiped my card, and signed. The purchase was done on a Saturday. I checked my checking account on Monday and right after that point of sale transaction there were 3 $10 cash debits totaling $30 from Square Cash.

I transferred all of my money out of my checking account into another account. I called my bank, canceled my debit card, & was informed I would be credited back the $30 and any fees occurred from me emptying my account. My bank informed me that due to the small amount there would be no investigation by my bank or Visa. If you are not a merchant there is no telephone number that you can call to contact Square Up or Square Cash. I emailed Square Up informing them of what happened. I received an email informing me to contact Square Cash. I emailed them again informing them I cannot contact anyone in Square Cash because I am not a merchant nor do I have the app. I received the exact same email response but at the bottom of the email it had my first email and a case number. I have received no assistance regarding what happened. This happened over a period of three days.

I contacted the District attorney’s office of where I live, & I was able to speak with the investigator. He informed me because the amount was small my police report might not even be accepted. He did say what occurred to me was identity theft. He told me what I needed to do. All 3 of my credit reports were already locked, and frozen because of what happened with Equifax a few years ago. I contacted TransUnion online and informed them I was a victim of identity theft. This information was documented on my credit report and TransUnion forwarded that information to Experian, and Equifax. I contacted the Fair Trade Commission online and filed a complaint for identity theft. The entire process took approximately 15 minutes. They will ask for your checking account number and routing number.

After what happened I’m a little paranoid so I gave my routing number but not my checking account number. I do believe the more info you give the more they have to go on, but I gave all other information that was requested. You need to give a statement, and you only get a certain amount of letters. I went straight to the point and gave the info that I believed was most important. They ask if you want to set up an account at the end of the process, and I opted to just in case something else happens.

Many merchants still use Square Up, and unfortunately this company is still active. One of the merchants I deal with requires me to use a credit/debit card to reserve an appointment. I’ve done this every time since January 2018, but a few months ago it saved my card info. I honestly can’t remember if it asked me or if it automatically did it. I allowed it, because it was convenient to not have to enter my card info each time. There’s my debit card info sitting available right in Square Up’s system.

After this incident I removed that card (which was already canceled), but the merchant I deal with requires a card to reserve an appointment. I know there are many people out here who do not believe in using credit cards and prefer cash or debit, but the protection we have can be limited. There are many credit cards that have zero fraud liability. So whether the thieves take $5 or $25,000 you are not liable, and it’s not your cash they are stealing. I have opted to using a credit card, especially if it’s a merchant with Square. This time it did ask me if I wanted to save my card on file, I opted not to.

I truly believe if more and more people file reports with the Federal Trade Commission, they eventually have to investigate this company. Hopefully, this will also call attention to how Square is conducting business with the merchants that have entrusted Square with handling their transactions. I know this review was long, but I want to give details that might help someone, or keep someone from having to go through this.

I reported this to support immediately and I know many others did as well that they had sent money to this same individual. It has been a month without any assistance and I just received the following response below. They expect me to bother law enforcement over a transaction under $20? What a waste of law enforcement resources when they know this user scammed multiple people. They do not post anywhere that there is no buyer protection when sending money using the app.

Square used to be reputable company but I can guarantee people will stop seeing Square as a reputable way to send or receive payments if they allow the scammers to take over and start scamming people. This is the email I received from square support: "Please contact your local law enforcement and provide the details you know of the transaction to them.
