I was introduced to Square by my cell phone service MetroPCS here in Oregon. In doing festivals outdoors I was very limited in being able to only take cash before I was introduced to square. It is so easy to use and understand. I would highly recommend this for any small business personnel. Or someone just starting a new business. The fees are not that much in using this service. I would not use another service because I have always been so happy with my square system.

Thoroughly disappointed in this company that I’ve utilize for years. Recently November 21 I decided to use cash app debit card for a deposit hold. I was told that after 14 days my deposit would be released and yet it has not been released. If I had use my normal Bank debit card or credit card this would not be an issue. Hmm but because it’s a cash app debit card it’s a issue. Lesson learned do not trust a cash app card for deposit holds. At this point I do not trust this company. I'm going to throw away the debit card after I receive my deposit.

I have been loyal to Square for years, but recently I have been very disappointed and scared to proceed with them. Recently I have added wholesale to my business and I get paid per order filled. Sometimes 1 order ships a day, Sometimes 20. The day before Thanksgiving I had a few deposits hit my account (all from the wholesale company I get orders through) totaling $1700.
I was at the store with my kids getting things for Thanksgiving and when I tried to use my Square Debit card it declined. I could very clearly see there was money both from the deposits + money that was previously in there from my shop sales. After having to call Square they notified me that my account was being reviewed due to those deposits. I explained that I have began wholesaling and that multiple deposits will be expected. He noted my account and within 3 hours it was unlocked. Fast forward a week... I had 9 deposits hit my account for $1900, I was at the store and card was declined again.
I called Square and was told yes, my account was "periodically reviewed" and there's nothing they can do. I literally have no cash, am stuck at the store, gas light on, and they didn't care. It is DEPOSITS, not withdrawals so I cannot understand why the "security alert". Also, they froze ALL of my money, not just from the deposits. I am still without access to my money and cannot get anyone to respond to me. I am now losing major money due to not being able to accept cards at my shop, my bills that were auto drafted have been kicked back including my website payment so that's unavailable also. I would advise you to stay far away from this company.

I have had major issues time and time again that I have had to find ways to resolve on my own. I have lost my entire website, they held my domain name for two weeks, keeping me from being able to move to a new platform, and they have cost me tens of thousands of dollars in business. On top of this, I have never gotten a response on any email sent in for help and they also fail to help me over the phone. I typically spend an hour getting bounced around having to tell my story over and over again before they hang up altogether. Now I only have 4 of dozens of active orders showing up and I have a few dozen very angry clients asking where their order is, and I have no way of getting it to them because Square not only lost all the info on the orders but they also cannot find any of it apparently. This will ruin my reputation and put me out of business.

I had $950 cash within Square Inc's Cash App. I lost access to this account for multiple years and I tried to get my money back. Square had been holding my money for so long that it is supposed to remit the money to the State's Unclaimed Property department. However, it hasn't done so for years and continues to hold the money. I have sent numerous requests to their Support team and they just keep dodging my requests with unreasonable questions such as the PIN number, etc. I lost access for years! Why would I need their help if I had the PIN! I contacted their Unclaimed Property Department (UnclaimedPropertyHelp@squareup.com). They replied to me only once, simply asking me to contact the Support. Then they no longer reply to me. This company is completely irresponsible and robbing money from consumers like me.

We bought the square card reader to take to our first pop up shop. Bank account was verified, all worked, payments taken. Then it was time to get our funds transferred. This was supposed to happen the next working day. Each day I checked our balance and it would tell me the money would be transferred that day. Nothing was ever transferred. Every day, it said a new date until I finally called and asked. They told "your account is under review". I provided all information asked for. Then I checked again, now it said on my balance "transfers suspended". Called again. Was told I would just have to wait as they are investigating "suspicious activity on my account". Wait another week. 1K in payments are still being held by Square.
My account was approved. Business approved. Payments worked. Yet no transfers and I'm being told I just need to wait until my account is reviewed. Judging by all the reviews, that money will never reach us. It's been 2 weeks and hundreds and hundreds of pounds lost. LISTEN TO THESE 1 STAR REVIEWS - DO NOT USE!

I am a small business owner. One of my client's credit card got declined. She was surprised so she tried it again and again. She then ask me to try a smaller amount. Still didn't pass. She then tried her other cards. Didn't work. So she decided to pay with debit. Square suspended my account suspecting fraudulent activity. I provided proof my business does not fraud. Bank account statement, billing etc. It took three hours. I was unable to do sales that day. After reviewing the information they decided to close my account for good.
There is no comeback. They hold on to the money. I lost hundreds of dollars. I wish I saw all the bad reviews about them but it seems that they are good at hiding it. I will not be doing business with Square anymore. A credit card decline is just something that happens. I don't have time to deal with this crap. I have been looking into other option and it seems Clover is a bit more expensive but at least they don't scam you from your customer money.

I own a cleaning business and I only have one client that uses Square. Every time she made a payment my account goes under review. I have called and complained with no resolution. Today I ask to speak with a supervisor. She assured my account was ok and to complete my square security so that my account wouldn’t get flagged. 10 mins after the call I get a email that my account is closed and I have to wait for my funds to be released from the account. This company doesn’t care about your business. If you have a small business don't use this company if you're depending on your money to pay employees or bills because they will hold your funds without notices and it takes 30 days to release.

We had been using Square to track appointments for over a year when we begun experiencing an error message when attempting to access their dashboard, preventing us from seeing or creating appointments. Despite this error occurring in three different browsers on multiple computers and persisting through all troubleshooting on our end, square dismissed it as a browser issue and refused to continue to investigate. This continues to severely impact our ability to run our business and I do not recommend anyone rely on square for anything due to their lackadaisical support.

For whatever reason, my swiper didn't work at the last show I did, so I had to enter credit cards manually. I followed the instructions on the Square Support page, selected Credit Card, and then went through each subsequent entry field typing in credit card number, expiration date, code on the back and customer zip code. In each instance the transaction ended with a checkmark and the word Approved.
When I didn't receive the payments, I contacted Square who insisted I had entered it as a Cash transaction, not a credit card transaction. When you enter a Cash transaction, the screen just accepts it, asks if they want a receipt, and then goes back to the New Sale page. It does not give you any way of entering the credit card information - which I did. They will not reimburse me, so I essentially had a Free Sale at my last show. Come and get it - no charge. They offered me a credit on future service charges, but that doesn't do me any good because I'm switching to another credit card payment service. Using Square is too much of a risk.

They reported my account for suspicious activity with NO customer complaints, just off their “policy” it seems “fishy” with such high amounts, so they cancelled my account even WITH PROOF OF CONTACT and customers agreeing to the amounts! AND they withheld my funds with no way to release for 90 DAYS!! They still have yet to release my funds and will not accept a phone call. After setting up my Square account and linking it to my website where we were selling tickets to our live Zoom conference. Square put a hold on our funds saying our activity was high risk and that our funds would not be released to us for 90 days unless we supplied them with 6 months of our personal bank statements but also my online banking login information and password. What??? My bank said to not give anyone my online banking information and password. At that point square would have everything they needed to not only set up credit cards in my name but also have full access and control of my finances. This is unacceptable and unreasonable.
When I refused to give them my login information from my bank (which was the only thing that was refused they have a copy of my ID, Social Security Card, 6 Months worth of bank statements as well as all of my website, personal and financial information) Square deactivated my account and are still holding my funds. They have absolutely no live representation in their phone support even though their website says they do. It is entrapment! We needed the information because the IRS is going to bill me for the 1099 tax bill. The employees were worthless and not willing to let me provide them with the EIN or the SSN number so they could verify how the account was set up. All we wanted to do was to provide the information to them so they could say yes or no. We asked to be transferred to a or the tax or fraud departments. They said they had neither. I really wanted to like Square and at first I did. I've had it for two years now for my counselling business. I have had to seek assistance for problems about five times. The support is very good. However, I had to constantly uninstall the app, reinstall it, reset the reader etc. etc. and it often still would not work when I needed it. It was very pedantic as to what I had to do, e.g. I found it worked best if I had the reader on before I turned on my phone to access the app. Other days I had to do the opposite!! It was very unpredictable.
I was always nervous as to whether it would work or not after a counselling session and unfortunately it often didn't. It's at the point now though that nothing the support people suggest, or that I now know to do, works. They suggested I send it back under warranty. However, I found out warranty is only 12 months, so that's no use to me at all. I'm now trying Zeller, hoping it's more consistent and reliable. It will be a relief if it is as I've never felt totally confident in square.

High charges on POS transactions. Services are charges a monthly fee AND per use/transaction fee on top of that. Nickel and Dime charges are out of hand. Moved to my credit union for less than 1/2 of the cost per month. Square started out good but then kept charging more service fees. An Example-loyalty program for clients was free and now it's a charge per client. Not worth it, I can keep track myself. I am in business to make money- not make money for Square. I know they need to charge to stay in business but it has become out of hand. I don't want to pay additional service fees so they can loan money to their other clients. Payroll is extremely high. Nearly $40 a month AND a fee per employee on top of that. Not with it....Sad to see a great company killing their own client base.

We operate 2 different businesses. Once we opened our second business and spent an excessive amount of time verifying who we are, sending all required documents and additionally even more proof of whom we are, Square decided to suspend and cancel all future transactions while holding the queued transactions to our actual bank account for 90 days. This has caused grief and suffering to the business and its employees. We had to use reserves from our other business to cover the employee expenses and business overhead. Most small business owners cannot do this and it would cause them to dive in a horrible spin out of business. Square allows illegal activity for transactions but not honest, hardworking individuals with the responsibility of the workers and their families. I will NEVER recommend a company like this and will always suggest other platforms (can't here so my review isn't biased)!

If I could give -1 star I would. READ THIS. This happened some years ago but still makes my blood boil. I put over 2000 worth of sales through. To absolute completion,..following all and every prompts to final sales completion to next transaction/customer. When I checked the next day...all sales completely gone. Nothing!!! Disappeared into never never land w/ me losing 100% of all those sales. No record in Square of 2000 worth of sales. We all know how horrible their customer service is and how frustrating is that. (Just spent another 3 hours today to finally getting 4 numbers... which each and every one of those numbers...drops each and every call, does not ring...or hangs up on you in 10 minutes. To the tune of 15 calls and still no human being.)
After many hours of trying to get to a supervisor let alone a human being...and explaining my situation...the supervisor said... "Sorry". Trying to force me off the phone and the arrogance and rude thing gave absolutely no solution and again was "Sorry" for my money loss. Offered little to no help or even looked into it deeply to see what happened. Could not answer any questions and pathetic excuses and tried to blame me. But after my persistence...the supervisor said he would give me $2000. Credit on my account. I thought at least I have free square for a couple of years.
Get this... After so much more time to try to talk to a human let alone get back to that supervisor to be accountable (hahahaha not)...he said...it was not 2000 worth of sq fees...it was 2000 worth of sq fees. Say what??!? Yep he duped me so bad. So he offered...the sq fees allocated...on 2000...not a 2000 credit. I am so disgusted. Maybe what $100...not 2000. What a sleazy company. He gave no input as to how it happened (sure tried to put the blame on me though)... No solutions to prevent this in the future...or no protection from them. So I only take ca and debit and as little credit card as I can now. Tried to call them today...it's now over 3 hrs and still no human being. What a disgusting service. Run run run...so many other incidents and flaws in this system. Told many times they hold people's money for months and months and is a fight to get them to send you your money. I did have a Square account about 8 years ago under a corporation but not under person dba.
Following their own instructions I sent them copies of my present DBA and the LLC which have different EIN numbers and never even existed at the same time. All they do is keep asking me for the exact same proof over and over. I have sent at least 3 times and they either lose them or lack competence to know what those are. Everything they asked for is also public record on the Florida corporations website so they can easily verify said documents as valid. Basically they stole $300 and refuse to release it even upon proof those are separate legal entities. If this has happened to others perhaps it's time for a class action lawsuit.

I've been using Square for a few years now as a independent music teacher. The entire time, I've set transactions to be sent to my account for next day. This past weekend I had two transactions fail to transfer on time. Concerned, I double checked my current bank statement (still didn't see the transactions) and reached out to customer service. I waited for about (surprisingly less expected) 15 minutes or so before I got an answer. However, when I received an answer, the representative was less than helpful.
When they answered, they didn't have the best greeting and I thought they had hung up as it took them a few minutes to start the interaction. After giving them the information they needed and my issues. In that same time, I went back to my online banking app to see any updates from there. Conveniently, the two transactions appeared as I was talking with the representative. When asked about the timing issue, if it was a holiday (I am in the United States and the country just celebrated another Independence Day). The only response I was given was "If it was transferred, then we've done our part" and failed to better answer the other questions I had. The representative sounded less than happy being in their position and sounded like they were reading from a script to answer me than give more appropriate answers to my situation. I was not impressed at all.

I provided all federal, state, and local tax docs, business licenses, reseller permits, COAs of products. They will deny you almost anything to hold on to your money. In the end, I had to refund the money to my clients because they tried to keep it. I would give 0 if that was possible. The real kicker is their horrible customer service. They don't tell you specifically what they need. They send an email. More information is need. Yes, but what information specifically? I know you know how to do your job but the rest of us don't know what you are thinking. Zero communication and they rarely reply to emails.

It was the internet's problem, Weebly is the best website builder in the world.
Original Review: July 1, 2021
It has been the worst experience building on the Square owned Weebly website developer over the past six years and I still do not understand why I am even using it. It is the slowest and most nonfunctional website builder in the world and I will be switching my service to the best available after getting some more time to shop around for a better service. Jack Dorsey is solely focused on Twitter and just purchased these companies to profit, rather than help others succeed.

I spent hours trying to navigate their site to get to customer service. I eventually received my customer account number and their phone number to call. When I called the phone number, I was prompted to enter my customer number, the recording said there has been fraud on my account and that my account was inaccessible. There has been no fraud or even one transaction. The absolute worst customer service ever!

And when you call to get answers they just say, "We apologize" and repeat what you say. Never a resolution to your answer. I think they just don't care because they got so big. Guess what? I've spent hours online trying to contact Square, without success. Square has taken funds from thousands of businesses and needs to be stopped.
Original Review: Square processed my first credit card payment of $350 without problems. Next day, funds were held pending review process. The requested paperwork was submitted, but account was deactivated. There's was no problems or irregularities yet the money from my first transaction is being held for 90 days, until mid-July 2021. I have been in business for over 20 years (self-employed). I am a dog training coach. I have clients all over NC, SC, TN, ND, MN, SD. I signed up with Square to offer payment options to my clients. Prior to this, I could only accept cash or checks. Square offers a service where all I had to do is create an invoice, send it to the client via email, and then the client paid it almost that fast. It works great for telephone consultations. A couple of my invoices flagged due to being out of state and a student using with permission, Dad's debit card. I have never had a payment returned for NSF or rejected by a credit card company or a bank.
Square contacted me, informed me that my account was on "hold" until I answered some questions. I answered their questions, gave them copies of my bank statement, my Driver's License, and my phone bill (to prove I live where I said I did). They said the review would only take a couple business days. It took one day. I received an email today stating that my Square account has been canceled with no explanation. They said they were going to keep my last card transaction for over $500 for 90 to 120 days. I feel like I have been held up and robbed! I'm just a little business and I need that money to pay my rent, put food on the table, and put gasoline in the car.
If you are reading this and considering opening a business relationship with Square, DON'T! They will do the same to you. Now, I have to spend valuable time finding another processor who will treat me better and with more respect. They still have not told me why they canceled my account. Square has zero customer service. This company has by far the worst customer service I've dealt with in any field (this includes late night fast good customer service). I didn't use their system much but kept it for convenience. One customer had an issue with her card's zip (they're moving and husband changed zip to new address without telling wife). The payment went through but square locked the account for 2 weeks. I spent hours on the phone just to get the run around with promises of call backs that never happened.
Problem number one is you need a pass code just to be able to call in. Then you sit on hold for at least 30 minutes each call to get in touch with account security just to never get called back. I called them after they missed their promised 24-48hr deadline. I sit on hold for 40 minutes, get told that I will get a return call which never happened, but I get an email 2 hours later asking for more information which there wasn't any more to give. In square's security check they want 3 months of bank statements. I should have refunded and deleted it then.
The last straw was after 2 weeks of the calls on the final day I was told I would get called back after 3 hours of waiting. I called, wasted 45 minutes to be hung up on. I tried calling them back and I get sent to voice-mail even though they were open. I issued a refund to the customer WHILE SHE STILL HAS THE CAR SHE PURCHASED FROM ME. Then square decides to send an email saying they are deactivating my account with zero explanation. The absolute worst customer service known to man. Them deactivating my account saved me the trouble of doing this. This doesn't include them trying to take 90 dollars on the purchase. This company is horrendous.

So in my opinion here is the scam, you sign up with them, they suspend your account for **, hold your money for 90+ days and there is no one to complain to because their customer service is non existent and the only recourse you have is consumer affairs, BBB and the California AG's office. So let's say they have 10,000 accounts and we know they have much more than that and they hold "Suspend" with $500 in each one that's $5,000,000 that they have access to funding them through interest rates etc. These cats are stealing your money and making money on your stolen money. In September 2020 my company completed an Artful Bachelorette Party for my client. The client was sent photos for her event and wrote a 5 star review and thank you note praising my company for a great event. In October 2020 we were notified from Square that a dispute had been raised: "Customer claimed credit was owed." We called the client and she denied raising any disputes, stated she had a great experience with us and had no idea what that was about.
In November 2020 I responded to the dispute thinking it was an administration error. I explained that this client received a full two hour live figure drawing class in September. The client was very happy and left us a great review. We contacted her today and she said that this dispute is a mistake and she never ordered it. I assumed that the $1,109.12 would be credited back to me when a human took a look and would see the error and fix it. In December 2020 Square said that the dispute had gone in the client's favor. I again contact the client, she again denied the claim and also said she has not received a credit/refund and sent screenshots showing her bank statements showing that she had no disputes open in 2020.
In December, January and February I had many phone calls and emails with my Square account manager who agreed that there must be a mistake. I asked her to escalate the dispute and to get a manager and/or someone from the Disputes department to take a better look and get back to me on where the money is. To this date March 1st, I still have no answers on this. There has been no transparency. I'm down $1,109.22. The client claims that they never received the credit so where is the $1,109.22.
Square has been very secretive, unhelpful, and someone has my money and nobody is helping me find it. I have run thousands of events, what if other people started disputing their events after they have had them? It is hard enough being a small business, trying to survive during a pandemic without having to try and fight for money you have rightfully earned. It is also awful that after giving a client a 5 star experience I had to taint it by constantly asking her if she disputed me and asking her to prove that she didn't. Very embarrassing and tarnishing for my brand. I'm hoping this doesn't happen to anybody else.

For two days of an estate sale, we used a Square card/chip reader to take credit card sales only to find out later that ALL of these sales registered as CASH even though, like Rob's experience, everything seemed to be working, including asking how the customer wanted to receive his/her receipt. Since the customers did not give us cash, we have lost $28,000 in sales; I had to write the clients checks for $20,000 out of my pocket. For any aspiring CBD businesses out there, or CBD businesses considering switching to Square, please let me save you some time: don't. When you first begin the on-boarding process for Square's CBD merchant site, it seems like it's going to be a quick and easy process. On April 15th I applied with Square to sell my ** farm's CBD products and received this message: We have received a substantial amount of interest, and we are working hard to review applications. At this time, we expect to get in touch with you regarding availability in approximately 2 weeks. We appreciate your patience as we strive to provide all sellers with a great experience.
Then by May 20th, I hadn't heard anything, so after sending several emails with no response, I had to call which was an experience. The person I spoke to on the phone was very nice, but knew nothing of their CBD department, and told me there was no way to access the department by phone, only email. (Which wasn't getting me anywhere). I corresponded with someone from Square named Isiah who assured me at the beginning of the process that it could take up to 20 days to be approved but they would get right on it.
Fast forward to June 26th, where I still haven't been approved, I am getting short, curt almost one word answers from Isiah, as if I have pissed him off with all these emails I'm sending, since you know, we are WELL past 20 days at this point, so I decide to see if there is anyone else in the CBD department who can help me. I get in touch with someone named Brian from that department, who was informative, helpful, and who realized I didn't have all the necessary forms submitted to be approved to sell CBD through Square.
Which is just mind blowing considering I had been calling and emailing since April 15th when I started this process. I get all the requirements needed to Brian...but when I follow up with him, I get an email back saying that he received a redundancy notice and no longer works with Square, and recommends me to...guess who...ISIAH. I go back to corresponding with him, still short curt messages with my questions ignored and nothing more than a sentence of response to live off of. I felt awful for Brian who was let go, because he was actually so helpful. Seems to me like they let go of a useful employee.
It is July 28th....and after submitting all the paperwork.... I still have not received any kind of message about approval from Square. So anyone needing a processor for CBD...I highly recommend eMerchant Broker processing. The customer service is amazing, so responsive, and if you have everything you need and all your paperwork in order, it should be a very speedy process.

I have modest sales ranging from $200 to $10,000 on most orders. My profits aren’t necessarily 25%, so how can I function as a business with 25% of my funds held? Square can’t/won’t tell me how much of a reserve I must have stored.
I’ve never had a charge back, but holding 25% of my funds because I’m in the graphic arts industry doesn’t seem reasonable. Do people not pay printers? I’ve been in business over 25 years and this hasn’t been a concern, as most of my customers are corporations. I can’t help but think this is yet another bank screwing over the small guy. They received stimulus funds from the Government to stay operational, but makes it increasingly difficult for small business to succeed. What small business is strong enough to have 25% of their gross sales held for ninety days? Unfortunately, I must say goodbye to Square and find another processor.

I applied for a PPP loan through Square, but cancelled the loan application before the loan went through since I was ineligible for the loan. Square pushed the loan through despite my wishes and insisted that I could not cancel it even though their own policies indicate that I do have a right to cancel. There is no way to connect directly to the Square Capital department and customer service is of no help. The only reason I can see for this unwarranted action is that Square receive a 5% commission for these loans. Has anyone else had a similar problem with Square. Feel free to contact me: **.

I'm sure some people have no issues or little issue with Square. Then there are some that told me to stay away from them completely. I also spoke to some other people who used them, and some mentioned it was a hit or miss! I have major issues with Square and will never use any of their services...period! Use them at your own risk! I got laid off from my company due to the Covid-19 and decided to open my own small company, in which I did.
Square will have you submit all personal informations... Driver License with photo, IRS documents, Social security number, address, phone numbers, bank accounts etc... and then request that you send in invoices and company information of companies you are doing business with. Reluctantly I did, cause I needed to collect payment from my customers via credit cards.
I performed my first (and Only) transactions and Lord and behold, they deactivated my account and would not transfer the money into my bank account. They gave me no reason as to why? I made numerous attempts to contact customer support department, but they would not take my call over the phone. I responded by email, just to get the same response over and over "Account Deactivated. Payment card processing permanently deactivated."
I continued to try. I sent emails from my customer to explain they were doing business with me, and nothing worked. Finally, after weeks and failed attempts to find out why, I gave up and had to refund the money back to my customer. I am now using PayPal business and they have been perfect. PayPal requested important minimum information, verified my company and I was up in business in no time. Used them already for 4 transactions and some of those funds were already transferred into my bank account. PayPal customer Service was excellent.
I gave Square so much personal and private information, and now I'm worried how they will use that information. They never gave me a chance. Never gave me a reason why they deactivated me on my first transactions. I supplied everything they requested. They put my customer through extra and unnecessary work that will have to be explained to their corporate office on why the transactions were reversed. It was multiple invoices. As of today, the refunds still has not been returned. It's been a week. I may have to find an attorney to get this resolved. Thank You PayPal for helping my business!

My first transaction went through seamlessly. My second seemed to go ok too. But then I log in and see that they wanted more details about my business. So I gave them the requested information. They then deactivated my account and told me they were withholding my funds for 2 months. I do NOT recommend this company at all. I have tried and tried to speak to a customer service rep but they have flagged my number in their system and told me to email them. I messaged them on Facebook. They said they would get back to me in a few minutes. Two days have gone by. This is a horrible horrible company to work with. The fact that they can withhold your funds like this is ridiculous. During a pandemic at that, when funds are tight as it is.

For weeks I tried to contact Square which is impossible. Finally after weeks someone called me back and told me someone would contact me immediately the next day. When I started my service with Square I actually went through and read all of their Terms and Conditions, which is never an easy task, but I wanted to make sure everything would be ok since I had a previous issue with another payment processing company. I only had their service for 3-4 weeks tops when I received an email from them saying they were cancelling my account! I emailed back to ask why and after a week got a reply that only stated that they could not go back on their decision. I never asked for them to go back on their decision, I just wanted an explanation as to why they cancelled my account randomly when I hadn't done anything wrong on my account or go against the terms and conditions.
I am very dissatisfied with their handling of my account and not even telling me what I may or may not have done wrong to just randomly lose my payment processing account with them with no warning! Not to mention a small issue I ran into with them before they cancelled, they were extremely unhelpful with and just basically told me to wait it out. Horrible customer service all around.

After much frustration, we could not verify the information on our record. All attempts to contact Squareup and their cash advance system were unsuccessful. Since we have no record nor any recollection of making such authorizations for our debit card account, we conclude that someone unknown to us used our account number to receive Squareup cash advances without our permission. We advise anyone not to use any Square Captial LLC products because they may be knowingly or unknowingly contributing to credit card fraud.

The company did contact me and helped to get a receipt for my purchase. I still find it difficult to update information and will only use companies that use their service, if I don't really care if I get a receipt or not.
Original Review: April 6, 2020
As a consumer, I have made seveal purchases via credit card from businesses who utilize Square to process credit card payments. The information that Square has contains an old email addresses that I do not use anymore. I have tried, without success to contact them in order to update this information. There doesn't not seem to be anyone who can help me. Since email is the only way that I can receive a receipt for my purchases, I will no longer give my business to sellers who utilize Square services. They need to provide some way to update information. At one point, I thought I was going to be able to contact them, but I needed some sort of customer code and the only way they could send me that was by text. That wouldn't work either because the phone number in their system was a land line. This company is a JOKE.

A new business here, I found opening the account to be the only easy and hassle-free process. After accepting about $400 in orders, they froze my account and requested business documents. Ironically the same documents I provided at account opening, in which they had no issues with. After submitting the requested documentation, they continued to process and collect my customers’ payments. Finally, after 2 business days I received an email stating they were deactivating my account and would hold all funds until June 30, 2020. Yes, an entire 3 months! I sell furniture on my web-store and eBay, so there is nothing illegal, fraudulent or suspicious about my business or my practices in any way. In their email they stated I violated their terms but would not clarify as to what specifically.
It was dishonest that they continued to process my customers’ payments while my account was locked. Because of this, every order had to be cancelled and refunded which takes an additional 7 days to get back to the buyer. I only seen this as their sneaky way of collecting people’s funds and having a reason to hold them. I then tried contacting them both by phone and web chat and much to my surprise their systems are set up to ignore any communication with them (except by 48 hour email reply). I was speechless. I lost all 7 sales and customers because of this but couldn't even get a response.
Most non-professional business I have ever done business with. Instead of initiating refunds to my customers, they attempted to "hold" funds for 3 months, I'm almost certain in an effort to rip off customers in hopes they would not come forward for a charge-back. The only reason I can figure they would not want to do business with me is because my business is start-up and I am not processing 10k a week in sales.
My business actually works with multiple payment gateways and this was hands down the most disturbing and disgusting business practice I have ever seen. It isn't bad enough small businesses are struggling today with the COVID-19 crisis crippling business, but you have payment processing companies like PayPal and Square that just find ways to only do business with "big players", making hundreds of thousands in fees. They are not in it for your business. They are in it for theirs! My advice? Get yourself a real merchant account and payment processing company. This place is by far the sneakiest and dishonest company. I will never do business with them again and I would recommend staying away, unless you process a million a year in sales of course!

I answered ALL their questions to validate my account. Sent them my driver's license, passport, 3 months of bank statements, Invoices, link to my website - BASICALLY everything to prove my identity. Then the following day, the day after my account was reopened, I did two more transactions and again my account was put under review. Only this time my account was deactivated. No reason was given they're holding my funds and I had to refund my customers totaling close to $200 because Square claims that they are going to hold my funds for 90 days. As a cab driver if I do not get paid immediately after I run affair then I am out the money. So I refunded my customers and I'm out almost $200 because Square decided for some reason to deactivate my account.
This company is terrible. I gave them all the information that they needed. I answered all the questions they wanted answered. I did everything they wanted me to do. Spent over two hours on the phone talking to these people. Even got my request escalated by a manager and still Square deactivated my account for absolutely no reason at all nor was I given an explanation. All I can do is hope that I can recover some of this money from my customers.
Being a single mother every penny matters. I feel completely robbed by these people. I did the work. I should be paid for it and I find it very unfair that these people think that they can just hold our money or deactivate account for no given reason at all. Please please please read and believe these reviews because every single bad review that I am right on here is true. I'm going through the same thing that these other people are going through. The only difference is my transactions were all very small. Under $100. Find a different company because that little 2.6% just isn't worth it in the end. Using Square trying to save money on credit card transactions isn't helpful because in the end you're going to be out the total amount of transactions just like I am. Hope this helps.

The said they would take the 'Welcome Letter' from the bank. My bank does not send a Welcome Letter. I have spoken to someone, give completely wrong information. Bartenders cannot dip cards to hold tabs, they literally have to hold the card in their possession. In and of itself a deal breaker for any real operation. 2. This is a simple criticism. Square took approximately 2000 dollars of my money for an order that I now can't ship and is holding it IF and UNTIL I prove a negative. What are they asking me to prove? They want me to demonstrate that the person ordering the goods is not some sort of fraudster in collusion with me, by way of a whole slew of redundant, useless information—coming from me, backed up by nothing other than my word. So they're both accusing me of being complicit in fraud and then asking me to prove that I'm not.
The credit card used was not reported as stolen. The transaction and correspondence is standard, rational and backed up by anything but suspicious activity. The person ordering the goods lives at a verifiable address in a former British colony that is one of the wealthiest on earth where fraud using credit cards is almost impossible (even more so than the USA).
What did they consider strange? Oh well the amount of the order was higher than normal even though the products are listed on my website. Do they have a number that you can call to get a customer service rep on the phone? No. Unless you source a special page with a code that you might be able to use to try and get a live person. So now my customer expects delivery of the goods and I can't ship them unless I want to do so for free and risk never being paid. In 12 years with eBay / PayPal / Stripe—I NEVER had an issue like this. Of course, I will never work with Square again but in the meantime, they have my money and won't release it even though I jumped through all their hoops like a good little monkey. Disgusting. I immediately phoned them and was advised they had never heard of Cash App. I tried to get a refund through Cash App - That's a joke. I finally went to my financial institution, who wanted to file a fraudalent action complaint and cancel my credit card - which would mess me up for several weeks while waiting for a new card and then the pin number under separate mailing.
I tried calling the company only to find out it is owned by Square Inc in California and could only get a recording directly me to a website. I finally found where I could get "support" from Cash App who sent me an email saying they would investigate. Investigate what? All they would let me put in was my email! I immediately responded to that email to tell them it was never authorized and who it was supposed to go to doesn't even have an account. In other words, Cash App took my money and had it in their hands.

You can not for example look up items by vendor or create/see any useful reports to help you with your purchasing of inventory. They have a few reports available but it's clear by these that Square don't understand retail at all. When issues arise such as your credit card reader won't work due to issues on their end, it may take hours for them to fix and you are stuck with only accepting cash and therefore lose sales during those times.

I have a dental office and due to Elavon’s confiscation of funds for not taking an online PCI compliance course was fined$25 per month for 9 months. This was done without my knowledge and I only became aware of it due to Elavon calling me to try and sell me another terminal. Decided to switch to Square. Had been with Square for about 5 years and was very pleased, especially with their 2.5% transaction fee. Since then it has gone up to 2.6 +.
A problem arose recently when Square sent me an email stating that a patient who had been rendered treatment with his wife was disputing a charge 3 months later. The reason was “no knowledge of charge”. Square proceeded to ask me to provide any detailed information which would prove that the treatment had been rendered and that the charge was valid. This information was to be forwarded to the cardholder's bank which would make the final ruling. The first thing that made things difficult was that they would not allow me to know the identity of the disputer. The second thing was that I only had a few days to provide the information, in other words it was being rushed. The only thing I was given was the amount of the dispute and the time and day the transaction took place.
I therefore went to my appointment book and looked at the time. I found that there was a man and his wife who came in and was charged the amount of the dispute. As I began to provide the necessary information ie. address, phone number, an itemized list of services rendered and fees for each procedure, realized that this information and the providing of it to third party was a violation of the cardholder's HIPAA privacy. I therefore was only able to provide to the cardholder's bank, the generalized information that we were a dental office and that dental services were rendered. I also provided the address minus the numbers and apt. #. I also stated that under HIPAA I could not give more detailed information.
Now Square claims that they also provided a copy of the signature screen which clearly shows the patient’s name and signature. So, one might ask, how is it that the patient is able to claim “no knowledge of charge”? The bank should also have a copy of the cardholder's signature with which to compare. Despite this the bank ruled in favor of the cardholder and Square proceeded to attempt to remove from my bank acccout the amount of the dispute. I called my bank and blocked the withdrawal because I felt the whole process was biased and rushed. Square then withdrew the funds from my next day's receipts without my knowledge or notification. Square acts like your bank account and the funds you send them to be processed are an “open wallet” for them to take money whenever they please. As a result of this experience I am looking for someone else to process my credit card transactions. BEWARE of Square.

Good if using in person. Never online. Was scammed out of $150 by a merchant using Square Up. Square up did nothing to help retrieve the money. That’s why I always use PayPal. They protect seller AND buyer. If you see HalleyHeart on Etsy or Cheerhub never buy from her, she’s a scammer!!

We signed up with Square in Oct. 2019 to take advantage of the easy to use Square Terminal. We provided everything they asked for as a business processing over 800K in credit card sales. “Welcome aboard!” they said. “We’ll take care of your needs” they said. We ran a 19K sale and all of a sudden they treated us like we were criminals. My account lead totally dropped the ball. His boss blamed it on “algorithms” as though that excuses their bad behavior. They now demanded months of documentation from us, which was fine, except for the fact that they held our money as ransom. Their merchant services department should be called anything but and they talk to you as though they can’t stand you. They even asked me to turn over our business checking account user ID and password! I told them to go fly a kite.
Now that I want to dump them after only 6 weeks of using them, they won’t refund me the $600.00 plus in expenses I paid for the Square Terminals. These people are bad news. They try to get you over a barrel and then coerce you. They lie. They are nasty. And they can go pound sand. Jack Dorsey....you need to examine the ethics of your company....and yes that’s Twitter and Square. Both immoral.

I just found out that using Square is not secure. Square will only help you if you are a seller. If you use your credit card at a service or provider your transactions and whom they were with, last four of your credit card and other personal information is often sent to the wrong email address. I just found out today at 5:15 pm that my transactions have been going to someone else's email account and they are getting text alerts also. After spending the last 30 minutes with their customer service department, they cannot provide any proof that it is corrected, nor can you speak with a supervisor or anyone within the security department. I do not believe this is safe to use.

We processed a transaction for a client for close to $20000. We supplied product the to customer then the customer put a dispute through their card company saying they never received the product even though they did. This was close to a year after the transaction. We sent Square all supporting documents showing product was received. Didn't hear anything back from square until they said we lost the dispute and now owe $20000. How do you not even contact us to discuss the matter especially when all supporting documents were there. Extremely disappointed. Would not recommend to anyone as they can claim anything and take your money without even making a single phone call to you to discuss or remedy the matter.

I needed a way to accept credit card payments. Most banks charge a monthly fee plus a high percentage from your sales (which can be a big rip off). Specially if your sales are higher than 4 digits. A customer told me about Square. I look it up and signed up right away. No monthly fees and kind of low % rates.

I took payments with Square all day Saturday Nov 30th. At the end of the day I added up my transactions twice. Monday morning square deposited money but almost $500 short? The first time I called and wrote an email a representative sent me a quick email saying that I only had 17 transactions & that there isn't anything she could do for me? She said I only had 17 transactions & that is wrong. They then asked me if I kept 2 copies of every transaction? I replied, "That's what I'm paying you to do?" I called again and answered many questions and by email. Square said they will do an investigation. I still haven't heard anything?
What's worse is every time they contact me they address everything to my mother and she has a square reader for her business? After reading all these negative comments I'm calling my lawyer in the morning. I wish I never got this machine. I'm just starting a small business & this was my 1st selling opportunity. I needed that money to buy more supplies, so I'm probably going to lose my business. I'm going to call my lawyer & get my money & buy a reliable system to take payments. Never buy this machine!

I've been using Square for 5 years and have been their biggest fan. I even bought Square stock. I have been using the wireless scanner for about 6 months. Last month while at a show where others were complaining about the internet reception my scanner was working better than fine. I would just put a customers card near my reader and it would run. I was surprised at how sensitive the reader was. Well I just got one of my credit card statements and 5 of the sells I made were charged to my own credit card. One of many in my wallet and not linked to any account on my phone. The reader had been in my purse with my wallet, not in my wallet. My wallet was nowhere near my phone or reader when I made the sells.
When I called Square regarding this they looked at the charges and suggested that I reimburse myself. When I said that it was their equipment that failed and that they should reimburse me they said I had no proof. Really???? I'm not in the business of charging myself for my own product! I am sure that I'm not the first person that has experienced this malfunction! Tap technology is new and square's wireless readers are malfunctioning. They are denying any problem to protect themselves and I for one have lost complete respect for them.

I rarely leave reviews publicly. I have given Square over a month now to reply to my concerns. We are a mental health counselling agency and they cancelled our ability to use their services and only sent us to a link (https://squareup.com/legal/payment) of 30 different terms of service reasons why they could have made their decisions. When I asked for clarification by email, someone named Roland replied: "Our decision to deactivate your account is final. Our Merchant User Agreement outlines specific account types and processing patterns that we are unable to support, and your account matches one or more of these conditions. I’m unable to address this with you any further, as I’ve shared all the information I can provide."
When I tried again, the same person said the same thing. When I tried calling, and gave them my unique code that the website provided me for phone support, I got an automated message stating that we violated their terms in some way but nothing specific again. We run about $50,000 of credit cards/debit cards per month, and this left us really stranded and we ended up losing about 3 weeks of merchant services to this. It only hurt our clients. We are now back up and running but for what?
Square simply decided unilaterally that we can no longer use their services. We do not fit any one of those 30 illegal or unauthorized business types and had been using Square since 2014 with no issues. Also, we had just updated to their new terminal device spending almost $400 and now have to find someone to buy it. I am happy to discuss in more depth our experience to anyone considering using Square, or to media outlets because once they make a decision, they really leave you in the dark to clean up the mess they create and I don't want others to go through the same thing. You can reach me at ** or at ** (feel free to remove my information if it is not appropriate for this review).

Had a transaction go through on Square and all was fine until Square determined that for some reason they did not like it. They cancelled the account with no explanation. Trying to follow up on what happened was impossible and talking to someone on the phone was never going to happen. To make matters worse, they still have the funds. They took the money from our client, and have kept it now for over 3 weeks. Can not get any headway on getting the funds returned. Even if you follow their directions they do not work. And you still can't talk to anyone about it on the phone. Horrific customer service. I recommend anyone but Square.

My 1st transaction resulted in a hold being put on my account. They wanted copies of my id, business license, 3 months of bank statements, invoices (which my company doesnt use), proof of an online presence, and the nature of my business. Other than my id and business license none of this is their concern. They refused to lift the hold on my account without this information and I was even told to fabricate invoices. The whole ordeal was stressful and unnecessary and the steps you need to take to even contact customer service are lengthy and unclear.

On three occasions I have received receipts for purchases made by my mother. We do not share accounts or cards of any kind. After confirming what had happened and sorting out how this occurred, I was only able to come up with one possibility. My mother does not have email (and for that reason has never had my email address) and her cell phone is only for emergencies. It did not occur to her that receipts could be sent to her phone, and actually I don't think that they can. It would seem that Square attached her to me solely based on last name. There are not a lot of us and we are probably all related but we do not all know each other and we don't want our data shared without our consent, even with family.
I have disconnected my email from the square system. I'm guessing this means I can't get my own receipts either. This is fine as I do not want to have my business run through a system that may send data to someone I don't know. I tried to reach Square about this (four different phone numbers and customer support. Apparently only vendors are considered customers. Beware of letting anyone run your card through square. Who knows who will get your receipts. Heaven forbid your name is common, could be anyone.

I just recently received an email from Square congratulating me on one year of doing business with them. Lo and behold, just today they suspended my account for suspicious activity. I attempted to enter all of the required information to unlock my account as they requested. Unfortunately for whatever reason they are not accepting my uploads. There is no option on the site to request help in uploading the required documents. I do not take it lightly that they have essentially shut down my business despite having no problems for a year now. I am currently shopping for another payment processing site as this is unacceptable. Buyer beware when you use Square.

This crew of shysters ought to be ashamed of themselves. They closed my account with zero forewarning. No explanation. I’ve tried repeatedly by phone, email, FB Messenger, and evening posted in their community, to no avail. The last thing I did was send money to my two younger sisters who are in need of some help. $80 went to my PayPal to send to one sister, so she could buy an electric blanket. The other went to PayPal so I could send $50 to my youngest sister, so she could buy food for herself and two kids because her abusive live-in partner won’t give her money for groceries. So I try to help my family and end up losing everything because of it. I guess it’s true what they say, No good deed goes unpunished.
5 years ago I was told I had 3-5 years to live because Duke University couldn’t figure out what was causing my health issues. We finally figured it out to me Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic issue. Because of that I also have heart failure and a vascular brain mass, not to mention Dysautonomia and MCAD. So I had to find something I could still do. I decided to give up our family bakery and go back to my artwork. I’ve been working to set it up so I can help my husband make up for my lost income and to cover my medical bills because I cannot get insurance that will cover this mess. So we pay all my bills and medications out-of-pocket. I’m over here trying to set up my business and they decide to screw everything up on me. Not. Helpful.

We have been with Square for about 3 years. Square decided to deactivate our account without reason. Upon phoning Square, they still were unable to give us a reason. Square are holding thousands of $$$ of our transactions. They will not refund, or process our money, for up to 90 days. Once they do, the transactions will be reversed, sending back the money to our customers, for which we have provided goods and services. We only found out about the deactivation by an email, sent to our Junk Mail folder. We have been in business for 28 years, and now have no processing capability. Current transactions are in limbo. Square will not provide any further information.

Avoid these con artists. Terrible customer service experiences on phone and online. As many other customers have said on here, they randomly hold your money and DO NOT release your funds the next business day by 4pm. As a small business, I used PayPal processing for the past 6 years in USA, and they gave me my money instantly, no problem. With Square, they will not give me instant access to MY money. They state on their website that money I take in on a business day will be in my account on the next business day by 4pm.
I emailed Square to clarify that after my first sale was made, and they replied back "Yes, your funds will be in your account by 4pm tomorrow." And I phoned to make certain this was true, as I had not received my funds yet on the next business day. The team member told me that I would have the funds by 4 or 4.30pm today after she looked up my account. Well you can guess. The funds never showed up, so I called help line and was given some excuse that there had been a delay and no one knew why. Hmmm. Lots of other square reviews have said the same thing
This company seem to be fraudsters and liars. They publish their policy as funds being in your bank account on the next business day, but it is not true and they will not do anything to remedy the situation. I spoke with Laura, and Ben who was supposedly the head of customer service in Dublin. Poor choice if he is. Both of them could not have been more disinterested and rude. Ben refused to let me talk to a higher level supervisor and said no one knew why this happened but would not accept responsibility, nor advance me the money anyway as he said the money cleared my bank that morning. Well if the money cleared my bank why didn't I see it?? I told him it was fraud to advertise the next day funds protocol and then wash his hands of it when it didn't happen, and he just said sometimes these things happen. No explanation whatsoever.
Even after I told him I had phone call and email from 2 of his employees that day and night before saying my funds would be in my account, and available to me, today by 4pm, he still just felt sorry for himself and told me he wasn't enjoying the phone call and was going to hang up. I again asked for his supervisor and he told me I could cancel my service with Square if I was not happy with their service. And then he said it's probably the fault of my online booking service, Acuity scheduling. So I told him it's Squares interface with Acuity, if there is a problem Square should sort it out and give me my money now. He was not interested and hung up!
It's amateur hour over there, and unprofessional does not even begin to describe them. Don't believe what you read on their site and be prepared for sub-par customer service. I think there are better options out there. Small business owner has it hard enough without having a supposed support service working against them. It's 2019. This company is a dinosaur. Obese and inflexible and stuck in 1990's. Customers have choices now Square.

I have been using Square for my company since January of 2019. In the beginning, everything seemed great. THEN, MAJOR ISSUES started coming forth. Deposits not able to go through because of THEIR "technical issues." I would try messaging and calling for support with ZERO help, but the standard, "there is nothing with can do at this point, our systems should be up and running accordingly soon." This is NOT an appropriate response when you provide a company one of your most valuable assets that you wake up every morning to grow and provide superior customer service (if you care) to your customers.
In return, when you have worked an incredibly long week and would like a deposit into your bank account, the company you trust your deposits with should be able to step up and handle those transitions. MULTIPLE Times Square has not been able to come through, nor has the ability or care and concern with poor customer service to follow up and provide a solution. I write this post to hopefully help others avoid these unfortunate issues that will ultimately deflate you overtime. Go seek a reputable merchant that truly CARES and will make every effort to make sure you are taken care of with a positive outcome. ZERO STARS GIVEN.
