    This company is a disgrace. They took over a website server (Weeby) then after 10 years having an account Square decide to remove 3 x my usual fee for my website. After now writing to them to get a refund, I have spent over a year getting excuses. ‘The system’ don’t allow a refund, promises I’d get it, then not. Well over 50 emails and now nothing. Big corporation that steal money and no one is accountable. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. I will go out of my way to never use them and tell people when possible.

    I have no problems with their card reader services and the business loan has been valuable. However, their credit card is criminal trash. I'm certain there are laws against holding your payment for too long. It's been 9 days since money left my bank. Customer service was worse than useless.. The person truly angered me.

    Unfortunately, Square is dependent on AI algorithms that don't get it right. They will deactivate your account because, suddenly, the algorithm will pick up on something. I have been a business owner for 20 + years. I have multiple merchant services accounts. I decided to use Square because of the convenience, but less than 6 months in they shut my account down because I supposedly violated their terms. All I did was process payments from my customers, all 100% legit, but the algorithm was convinced otherwise. AI is just not there yet.

    Square as a banking institution is absolutely the worst. I own a small business and recently I had my card recently declined because I was a few dollars short. Which I understand that perfectly. However on the very next day they allowed an unauthorized payment of 400.00 to be taken out of my account which ended up making me 296.00 negative. My problem with that is that they had just declined me a day before because I was a few dollars short and that would have put me in the negative. Yet they allowed a payment which was not authorized to go through and placed far into negative balance. They said it would be 5 months before they could settle the dispute of that charge. Never mind trying to get in touch with someone is nearly impossible at least someone you can understand. They are absolutely horrible and I would never recommend them as a bank. Do NOT allow them to handle your business banking! Not safe or easy to use.

    Don't use Square! They are worse than PayPal. Use Sumup instead, they are much better. I received a payment from a client on the 23/12/2025, and today 31/12/2025, they will do the transfer even though they say that it is done the next day. According to the useless AI support, if the transfer day falls on a holiday or weekend, it will be done the next working day. Well, 26 is not holiday in Spain, nor the 29, 30, 31. However, it is taking them 7 days to make MY MONEY available. They are scammers so avoid Square like the PLAGUE!

    Customer service through Square is a NIGHTMARE. They design scripts to give merchants circular logic until their 'internal team' decides to act. Managers are impossible to reach. They DO NOT support merchants.

    I have been happily using Square for my small business for 3 years. All of a sudden, without any explanation or assistance to explain, I am notified my account will be deactivated in 20 days due to violations. I can't think of a more unprofessional method to treat customers. In response to this I am feeling extreme anxiety, frustration, complete confusion, and anger. If you have a different choice for a payment service I highly encourage you pick someone else lest this happen to you as well. I am deeply disappointed.

    If there was a zero; that would be perfect for this company! My husband passed away in September which the Square account is connected to his number & email. His phone has been disconnected. I have been battling to get it changed over to my email and number. They keep saying it will be a few business days to look into it. It has been about 2 weeks. My business money is just sitting there & I cannot release it to my business account because it was in my husband’s info.. I have sent them everything they need especially my beloved husband’s death certificate. This is robbery! I believe they are holding our money trying to steal from us! This is unreal!!!!

    Square is absolutely horrible! I have a legitimate business with all the legal paperwork and Square has deactivated my account with hundreds of dollars that I can not get. Yet my customer is saying that the product has been paid for. So now I am out money as square is saying that my money will be released after March 15 but I have to fulfill my customers order. Square has made my business look completely stupid in my customer's eyes!

    They don't investigate cases and withdraw money instantly without review, worst experience and that's weird that they are still legitimate. Class action lawsuit should be made against them. They didn't even pretend to investigate any claim.

    I recently started an LLC called Revival Diesel and without any reason other than manually entering card number since the customer is out of another state Square had held all funds and deactivated my account. Tried to talk with customer service. Spent 4 hours on the phone and got nowhere.

    I rarely leave reviews, but my experience with Square has been extremely disappointing. They suddenly deactivated my account without providing any explanation. When I called to understand the reason for this decision, the representative I spoke with refused to give me any details. While I was trying to explain why I needed clarification, the agent abruptly interrupted me and simply asked if there was “anything else” they could do—essentially ending the conversation and making it clear that they had no intention of helping. It was rude and incredibly unprofessional.

    What is even more concerning is the total lack of real customer support. If you need help with something simple, someone might eventually respond. But the moment you have a specific question, need to escalate an issue, or understand a serious decision affecting your business, it becomes impossible to speak with a real person. They force you to communicate only by email, and in most cases they provide no explanation whatsoever for their decisions. As a paying customer—someone who relies on Square to process transactions and who pays fees on every single one—I expected transparency, professionalism, and at least the minimum level of support. Instead, I encountered a complete absence of customer service. Totally negative experience. I strongly advise others to stay away.

    My account was hacked on a Friday night. I got an email that said my 2 step verification had been disabled. And then I got a second email saying, my email on my account had been changed. I tried to contact square, can't get ahold of anybody until Monday morning at 6 AM Pacific time. They now can't find my account because it's not under my email and my phone numbers have been changed. I cannot sign into my account says and no account exist. Had to go to my bank. Cancel all of my accounts and reopen new ones. Talk to customer service this morning and they said someone will contact me in twenty four to forty eight hours because they can't find my account either.

    Stay away from this company. They're thieves. I had trouble accessing my account. I gave them my debit card number and full name so they could access it, and they said they couldn't help me. They said the email address didn't match. I told them I had changed the email, but they apparently hadn't entered it into their system. I asked them how I could access my account, and they said, "We can't do anything." Thank God I didn't have any money on the card, otherwise I would have lost everything because these people are inept thieves.

    This statement is being provided to formally document our company’s experience with Square/SquareUp as a payment processor and to caution other businesses regarding the substantial operational and financial risks associated with their services. Our organization was approved by Square and began processing transactions in good faith. Within less than one week, Square unilaterally froze our account and withheld a significant amount of our funds, despite the transactions being lawful, authorized, and fully verifiable. This action was taken without prior notice, without adequate explanation, and without any reasonable opportunity to cure or clarify whatever concern Square alleges to have identified.

    From a corporate and legal standpoint, Square’s conduct raises serious concerns regarding:
    Failure to act in good faith and fair dealing.
    Lack of commercially reasonable communication practices.
    Potential misuse of merchant funds through prolonged withholding.

    Operational negligence and disregard for foreseeable financial harm.

    Upon further review of public complaints and regulatory filings, it appears that Square’s abrupt account terminations and prolonged fund holds are not isolated incidents but rather a repeated pattern affecting numerous businesses across multiple industries. Many reports reference holds extending 90–180 days, with little to no explanation provided — a practice that, at minimum, deserves regulatory scrutiny. It is also widely recognized that Square earn interest from pooled merchant funds held in reserve or under review. When combined with sudden freezes and delayed communication, Square’s actions create the appearance of a system that financially benefits from delaying merchant payouts, regardless of the impact on the affected businesses.

    For comparison, our company processes payments through Stripe and QuickBooks without issue. Square was intended solely as a secondary processor, and yet it has caused the most disruption and financial exposure of any provider we have ever tested. Based on our experience and the overwhelming number of similar documented cases, it is our professional recommendation that businesses avoid Square/SquareUp unless they are prepared to assume significant risk to their cash flow, business continuity, and financial stability. Square’s current practices present a clear and avoidable threat to any business relying on timely access to its own funds.

    Bought this, set it up, sold some items at the vendor show, came home to find out they canceled my account, support was no help, they couldn’t answer my questions and all the money I made has been kept by them.     My account was hacked, and I have been trying for 6 weeks it back running. Customer service is terrible. I get told something new every time I call. I have called at least 10 times. Square has been holding several thousand dollars that my clients paid that I cannot get access to those funds.

    I have used Square for a couple years. This month I tested the unit and processed the first sale. My phone said the sale was complete and I was paid. After the customer left I got a message that the sale was not completed and to try again. The customer was gone. Trying to reach square is very time consuming and mostly impossible! What a terrible company to deal with.

    Up until today (11/13/25), I have been using Square for my small business. After over 6 years of using Square for my POS and card processor, I was informed my account was being deactivated??? Nothing about my business has changed in the last 6 years, so I don’t really understand why this is happening all of a sudden. After doing some research about Square deactivating accounts, this seems to be a VERY common issue with this company! Do yourself a favor and use another card processor! I have a brick and mortar store with no online sales, so I will be switching to cash only and purchasing an ATM until the foreseeable future.

    I had issue that I needed to call the customer service department, the first representative was rude and didn’t help at all basically told me nothing he could do, I asked to speak with a Manager, so supposedly a man named Chris who was a supervisor was actually worse, don’t go with this company! I’m not sure what happened to them but they are HORRIBLE! I ended up closing my account and will NEVER use them again! Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for a better product and customer service that are competent and trustworthy, NOT like them.

    I own a small business where I thought Square one would be convenient to use for credit card payments. First transaction I made went smooth. The second one I made was for $4700 and square thought it may be fraud for no reason I could understand. They said they would hold the payment for 3 months then release it to me. I asked why not just return the payment to the original sender if they thought there was an issue so that I can get paid. They said no that they had to freeze it for 3 months. This is horrible. I have never heard of any company holding your money for 3 months. Scary when it’s a big transaction and you need that money. I stopped using them immediately and went with the bank. I still have another month to wait before they will release my funds.

    As I've had a Square account since I opened my flooring showroom in February of 2025, used the credit card transaction maybe three times as most of all our customers use checks or Zelle. On October 31 I had a large order for tile they wanted to put it on a credit card being hesitant of doing so I had no choice. Put the order in, transaction went through successfully and square 3.5% is 1,000. As I said it was a large purchase. Then now are holding my funds for verification! Are you kidding? I've been verified, used them before, now this. I have to purchase this order as my clients are on a time frame for this job. Now square will let me know after I reverify myself. I have to purchase this material and pick up all on Tuesday 2200 sf of tile!!!!

    This platform is a joke!! They deactivated my account within a few days of opening it. I have $500 being held, I spoke with an agent on a recorded line on 10/23/25. He assured me that my fund would be transferred to my linked account on 10/25/25. My funds are still not in my account and customer service is now saying it will be 11/23/25.     I am a privately owned CBD pain balm seller that, after building the site (Wix - happy with them) and getting all my financial information connect to the store, I was shut down due to Square needing a COA. After providing the requested COA showing far less Delta-9 included that the state maximum %, I spent 6 months of back and forth (due to their horridly delayed email response and clueless phone reps) to get a functioning store.

    Finally, on 10/7 they need more info, again - I provide it, 10/8 they say 'You’re back up and running! We don't need any further information.... (image attached). So I try to run a text purchase via the store - it doesn't work. I send multiple emails to customer service with this issue and get an email from Customer Service team saying they're taking care of me and to follow these prompts to 'change any payment information', when it is clearly the SquareUp Payment Processor that has been the issue - I email him (Jay) multiple times w/ no response, then get notified 10/16 that my account has been deactivated.

    Here's the most amazing part........When I finally get a customer service person on the phone today (Ryan), he tells me 'Sorry, due to your account already have been shut down, I cannot speak with you any further on this or answer any questions, or transfer you to anyone else at Square (I'd already asked to speak with his manager). I am very sorry, but I must end this call.....click.'

    In short, Square is one of the only companies that I could find that promotes themselves as able to process CBD product transactions, and it turns out they are not. I gave them everything they requested, and still got shut down without any explanation whatsoever. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ever DOING BUSINESS with this unprofessional company. MASSIVE waste of time and money.

    DO NOT USE SQUARE FOR ANYTHING. This company told me to set up my business account and then told me everything was approved so I ran my customer's credit card and square took the deposit of 1895.00 then came back at me and said my ID wasn't approved. My ID is not out of date and is good. They put a hold on releasing the funds for a week I've sent everything they have asked. Now have come back and said they deactivated my account and have put a hold on my customer's deposit money and said it won't be released for 90 days. I'm pissed

    Have had too many issues with Square. Their customer service SUCKS!! They are SCAMMERS!!! We had issues and they said they were going to give us $500 in free processing but it was a LIE!!!     I used Square Banking due to direct deposit from Square card reader for my small business. A check deposit that cleared my client's account never was deposited to my account. I have provided Square proof from the issuer's bank showing funds cleared her account but have never been deposited to my account. After 6 phone calls, 5 emails, 3 chats, and a few posts on their help forum, I have been promised countless times that my concern will be escalated at least 10 times. I received one email very early on telling me the check was insufficient funds. I have sent proof that the check cleared her account, and no one will reply. Not only is this concerning as to the safety of consumer funds, but absolutely terrible customer service. Do not use Square!

    I opened up a Square account for my cleaning business. After three transactions I was told to verify my account with some questions. I answer the questions. After a couple days they open my account back up. A couple days later I got my debit card in the mail and I tried opening a savings account. At that point they asked me more questions and put my account lock again. They asked me a series of five questions which were similar to the first set of questions and I answered them honestly and correctly and I get an email a couple days later saying my account was deactivated. I have called and the people don't understand what I'm saying. All they keep saying is they understand what I'm going through and this decision is final and won't give me a supervisor and won't let me talk to someone higher up because of my account being deactivated that should have no reason and there's no reason my account should be deactivated.

    Square is a joke. They're terrible business and you shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops just to run a small business. You're already trying to do enough just to run your business and these people don't make it any better. I do not recommend square and I do not recommend trying to call someone and I do not recommend anything about them. It's a terrible company that are waste of time. They waste your money and they just want to stress you out and give you a headache and then if you call them they hang up on you like I got hung up on.

    I'm just starting out selling some handmade items online. Since Square offered a free version of their service, I figured I'd give that a try. I wasn't able to do anything with it since there was only one template and everything was in black and white. I signed up for a free account, but they put me in the plus plan and informed me that I'd be charged $49 at the end of my 30-day free trial. I wasn't happy to see that they planned to charge me for something I never signed up for, especially when I wasn't even able to test out useful web design features.

    Never disliked a company so much. Not only are the costs astronomical, the customer support is mostly unavailable, and otherwise completely unhelpful. You cannot get a live person on the phone and it is completely unprofessional. A nightmare!!

    I have been with Square for 8 years and this has been the most awful experience I’ve had with them lately. I deposited a check on Monday, that same day, they put a hold on my check and froze my account due to fraudulent activity. What activity? I rarely use my account. I’ve deposited checks before and within 24 hrs, I get credit. The representatives have gotten rude and won’t explain why a government check would take more than 5 business days to clear! I’ve worked for banks before and I know it doesn’t take that long to clear. Needless to say, when that credit hits my account, I’m closing that sucker down! You can’t stay in business that way and talk to people all crazy. And they never told me why they froze my account.

    Less than 1 star is more than they deserve. I have a client of over 10 years who disputed my charge through Square because the Amex was giving me problems in PayPal. The customer is disputing my charge (<$600) even though I sent an email prior to my new fees and associated services. When I received the email from Square about the dispute, I signed on that day to gather and submit my side of the dispute to show I have in fact provided the said services. This was the first time I have had a customer dispute and the first time through Square. So day 2, I had more documents showing services rendered. Signed on to the dashboard. Dispute filing closed off. So I found square@help-messaging.squareup.com and emailed them my additional documents of proof. First, Juliette said the dispute department doesn't show a dispute on my account. I had to send screenshot of my dashboard to show in fact there is.

    Anyway, instead of forwarding my email to my ex-customers bank, she directs me to Squares AI Chat! AI Chat!? It's not going to understand the problem. Oh I did get someone on the phone the other day. They wouldn't help me because I'm not a 'merchant', are you kidding me? I pay you fees every transaction and I don't get support? What a joke the company is. So I say so "If I'm a merchant, you'll provide phone support?" "Yes." Then he wouldn't divulge the fees associated with Merchant account. What a scam. I said, "Forget it." So, they have tried to debit my bank account so many times, their system has unlinked to my bank. Do you think I'm going to restore the link for them? Attorney General is going to be hearing from me in the next couple of days and I am never going to use Square again. My advice - run away from Square, do not use them. You can see the other bad reviews here! Believe them!

    I can't begin to share the large amount of issues that I have experienced in the 2 months with Square. Account Rep is unresponsive and has poor attention to detail. Fee being charged is incorrect and does not match the contract I signed. Customer Service and follow through is non-existent. I've been calling for a month to get issues resolved and not 1 person has called me back. Asked for a different Account Rep. Excuses after more excuses. I'm looking for a new POS. This company is the worst company I have ever encountered. They have made it harder for me to run my business.

    We took a down payment for a vehicle from a customer. Square requested "more information" from us regarding transaction. We completed the questions and sent required documentation. Then received email saying documentation was unacceptable. Customer was returning the following day to pick up vehicle which we could now not release to him because of Square holding money that they may never release. We quickly had enough and refunded payment. Now customer is mad because it may take 7 days to get back to his account, and we still can't complete his vehicle sale. What a nightmare. We will cancel Square!

    Think twice before using this company! I was introduced to Square by an employer. I am a subcontractor, this is how the employer wanted to pay. He is allowed to print off checks through this company without having the funds in the account. I call him, and he gives me the runaround. I call Square because his name (Khalil **) as well as theirs (Square) is on the check. They claim they don’t have the ability to look into his account to see what the problem is.

    I asked this company to delete me off of his account as a payee. I since this is a scam. I was told by them that this is the only way he could tell me what’s due to me. I replied, "He is bouncing checks, I’m not receiving payment anyway, delete my name from the account." They don’t have the ability to do that. This company needs to have a wheelchair sign in the middle of their square symbol. They have tons of disabilities, incapabilities, mixed with a side of no sense abilities. However, if they continue, they will have lots of liabilities! Run from this company. It’s a cover-up for fraud!

    Square customer service (Lexi) is very rude, and unprofessional. In the midst of me talking and explaining my situation the representative said "Bye" and hung up on me. Furthermore the representative would not provide me managerial assistance, I've asked for the manager multiple times. They refused me of anymore service. They deactivated my account when I provided all necessary business documents, and bank information. They're holding my money, that I need to operate my business,. They refuse to handle the situation with my retrieving my funds, saying I have to wait 3 months. I've done nothing wrong, what they're doing is wrong, and is putting me at a financial loss. They need to be held accountable for how they treat their customers.

    Do not do business absolutely with swear. They will hold the money for 6 months if you have any any chargebacks plus they will cancel your account automatically and you won't receive your money at all for anything and you try to get in contact with them you can't. They have no way of calling them afterwards after they canceled the account. Extremely hard. Extremely hard. They don't have a number. They don't want to do business after that. Very poor after that. Very mismanaged company. You will be scared if you did. They need to be investigated by the FBI and I'm not joking.

    Extremely Poor Customer Service – Holding Funds Without Just Cause. I rarely leave reviews, but my experience with Square has been unacceptable and deserves to be heard. Square has shown a disturbing lack of transparency and professionalism. They have withheld funds from my business account without providing a clear explanation or timeline for release.     Negative review about SQUARE: unjustified retention of funds, Frustrating and disappointing experience with payment handling. I hired SQUARE's services to process the payment for my first credit card payment invoice, which total amount was $1,485 dollars and was charged on May 9, 2025. From the beginning, my experience has been extremely disappointing. Without giving me any clear reason, SQUARE decided to withhold the payment and, to make matters worse, canceled my account without prior notice. Not only did they keep my money, but the communication was almost nonexistent. They only informed me that they might return the amount in three months.

    When that deadline was up, they notified me that they would withhold the money for an additional thirty days, arguing the existence of recent charges, which is false, as I have not made any additional charges since then. I feel absolutely frustrated and cheated. I do not recommend anyone use SQUARE as a payment processing platform, as the only thing I received were excuses and a total lack of transparency and accountability with my money. If you are looking for a reliable company for your collections, definitely look for another option.

    I purchased the reader device for my one and only art fair show. It worked one time before the show, but failed to work at the actual art fair show. I tried to contact Square, but there is no option for speaking with a representative. You are immediately sent to text messages for “chat” support and then the call ends. The reader failed to perform its one and only function yet I am being refused a refund.

    In addition, I never received a receipt or order number from the company despite several requests for one. Interestingly, without an order number, there is no way to return the merchandise because they will not accept it unless they send you one of their own return labels, which they will not do without the order number. One of the chat representatives accidentally responded to me when he meant to text his supervisor. He said, “am I allowed to provide that to her?” after I requested the order number. Why would they withhold the needed order number so that I could pursue the refund? This company is dishonest and absolutely impossible to deal with. They use delay tactics, long wait times, and circular reasoning.

There are so many layers of redundancy built into their processes and customer service that you will never get any resolution to your issue- which has been the same for many, many small businesses. Their MO: if you have a various refund or multiple transactions, they will lock your account and hold your funds for 1-2 days citing a security review.

    At the end of that review- which they refuse to expedite, refuse to escalate and in which NO MANAGER in the entire company will get involved or speak to you, they will close your account without explanation and further hold your funds (which are likely for bills, payroll, or operating expenses) for an additional 90 days. What small business can function for three months without their funds? Square is a horrible, horrible company. You have been warned.

    DO NOT USE!! This company will steal your money. I was a new customer using square for my real estate business. I created an account, bought the pos system, and everything was fine. I worked tirelessly on a property and received my first payment from my client. Square not only took the payment out of her account and they flagged my account for high risk and identity verification purposes. (None of this information was required when creating the account, nor do they deny the transaction until the verification is concluded.) They took her money and refused to pay me.

    My account was under a 30 day review where I needed to plead my case of identity and business validity. For weeks I waited and spent days going back and forth with them giving them all the information they requested. They, then, deactivated my account, and did not issue a refund to my client. They STOLE $5,000 and refused to let me speak to anyone in power. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS. YOU WILL REGRET IT!

    I'd highly suggest using Stripe or another payment processor, opposed to Square, especially if you haven't signed up for Square yet. My experience with Square was fine, until they recently inaccurately flagged my account as high-risk. I've never received a charge-back, and nothing has changed in my business.     I’ve been a loyal Square customer and had no issues until a recent transaction triggered an unjustified hold on my funds and the deactivation of my account. A customer purchased automotive parts from me using his American Express (AMEX) card. Unbeknownst to him, his wife initiated a dispute with AMEX. Once she realized the charge was legitimate, she canceled the dispute, and AMEX confirmed that the funds were returned to Square on July 8, 2025.

    Despite this, Square has continued to withhold my funds and has deactivated my account without providing any clear explanation. I’ve fully cooperated with their requests, submitting every piece of documentation they asked for—including written confirmation from AMEX and the cardholder that the dispute was canceled. Yet, Square insists on holding the funds for 90 days, with no transparency about the reason or any indication of a policy violation. This kind of treatment is devastating for small businesses like mine. When funds are withheld without cause, we’re left scrambling to explain delays to our customers and unable to fulfill orders they’ve already paid for. It damages our reputation, cash flow, and ability to operate.

    Unfortunately, my experience isn’t unique. A quick search reveals countless similar complaints from small business owners who’ve been blindsided by Square’s opaque policies and lack of accountability. It raises serious concerns about how Square treats its smallest and most vulnerable merchants. I urge Square to release my funds immediately and provide a clear explanation for the account deactivation. Small businesses deserve better than this.

    This is terrible service, my partner and I have had too many issues. We've had funds delayed for no apparent reason. Along with our account being removed and temporarily in the middle of a transaction with a customer. Which reflects badly on our business as owners having a customer wait to complete payment. We appear unprofessional in front of our customers and potentially can lose customers. I would not recommend the customer service as well were no help at all and constantly disconnected from our chats.

    Square used to be great, so I overlooked their high percentage rate. Good customer service is essential when you have an issue and that is where Square has fallen. Instead of giving Americans jobs to serve English speaking Americans, they have outsourced their customer service dept. to either ** or ** and **. They are difficult to understand usually and when a service call has to be escalated they can only email the dept. that needs to be contacted to resolve the issue. So - they are buying cheaper labor and I am getting uber crappy customer service. If you have to call them, pray you get someone from ** - because the other ones tend to get short and rude….especially the males. For this reason I am now looking for someone to replace Square. I am sick of heavily accented English Second Language service reps that are hard to understand and they have a hard time understanding me.

    Woke up this morning feeling quite frustrated. I’m currently in the process of gathering donations to support the growth of my business (Using the donation link).

    For over five years, I’ve been using the Square app, and I have an active loan with them. My business has never faced chargebacks or any fraudulent activity. However, while accepting donations, I received a generous contribution from a customer I hold dear. To my surprise, Square decided to deactivate my account, citing “suspicious activity” for reasons that remain unclear.

    My customer did not dispute the payment and even provided proof that the funds were deducted from their bank account. When I reached out to Square, their support team was utterly unhelpful; they followed scripts and showed no regard for my history with them. They failed to explain their decision and, in essence, took my money and froze the remaining balance in my account. This feels incredibly unfair, especially since there were no complaints or issues, and I wasn’t even given an opportunity to dispute their decision.

    I've heard of similar experiences happening to many small businesses, but I never imagined it would happen to me. According to their policy, I won’t have access to my funds until January. Thankfully, I have my website through Shopify, or this situation could have severely impacted my company. I do not recommend using Square for any business transactions.

    I’m the owner of multiple businesses and have been using Square Point of Sale under the belief that I was partnering with a reliable and transparent payment processor. Unfortunately, this week has proven otherwise — Square is currently **illegally withholding \$10,000 of my company’s earnings** due to a broken verification process and unresponsive support.

    On July 31st, I attempted to verify my identity through Square's system after being prompted. Their own website clearly states that common forms of ID — including **driver’s licenses, military IDs, and veteran IDs** — are *not* accepted. However, these are the only legal forms of identification many of us possess. Despite submitting valid documents multiple times, the system rejected them without explanation.

    I spent **over four hours on the phone** with various Square representatives. One even **hung up on me**. The others repeatedly told me I would have to wait “48 hours or more” for identity verification — which is absurd given that their system won't even accept standard IDs. They refused to escalate the issue or connect me with a manager or their verification department, claiming no live support was available for that team. **Why have a department that customers can’t contact?**

    As of now, **Square has effectively frozen \$10,000** of my company’s money — funds that were already processed and are rightfully mine. Tomorrow is August 1st, and thanks to Square's system failure and delays, **I will now start the month in the red.**

    * My **employees' paychecks will be delayed**
    * My **business rent, utilities, and service bills are now overdue**
    * I’m now facing **$1,200 in late fees**

    * My business is at risk of **compliance issues with the Department of Labor**

    And **Square refuses to reimburse or even acknowledge these damages.** A company that brings in millions annually is fine ruining small businesses’ cash flow over a flawed and inaccessible verification process. Their actions — or lack thereof — amount to **unlawful withholding of funds** and gross negligence. This is not just bad business — it’s a risk to the very survival of the companies that rely on them.

    Because of this, **I will be removing all five of my businesses from Square** and will never recommend them to another professional. I am currently seeking legal guidance regarding this matter and will be reporting this situation to the appropriate regulatory bodies. If you are a business owner considering Square: **beware.** When something goes wrong, you will not get support. You will not get your money. And you may be left explaining to your employees why their paychecks aren’t coming.

    I have owned a CBD store in southern Wisconsin for the past 4 years. When I first signed up to use them, they said everything was good to go and could start the day I sign up. I had a little bit of trouble with square a year and half in. Without email warning (only on the company's dashboard) I had my funds frozen from transferring into my bank account. The notification on my dashboard said I was not compliant (no one told me about this when they signed me up). I gave all the necessary paper work. Everything was cleared and the funds (after nearly 3 months) were returned. I chose to stay with them seeing how it would be more of a hassle to get up and going with a new processor.

    About two months ago my funds were frozen again. I did the same thing and turned in my paperwork. This time there was something missing and they only gave me 3 attempts to hand in all of my paperwork. When I called in to ask for help, they couldn't tell me what was needed due to the call center being a different department than the one I needed approval from. The compliance team (from what the call center told me) does not have a direct line to other departments or to customers. I called in at least 5 times within this month and talked to someone new time. I had to explain myself to each person I talked to as they do not have internal notes so make sure things are organized and taken care of. Without knowing what was needed I submitted everything that I thought was needed. Again was told I was missing things.

    I am now scheduled to be deactivated from their platform with no true explanation of what I did wrong or what they needed for me to be fully compliant by there measure. Through all of this, they allowed me to still process cards but they won't deposit that money in my account until the investigation is done(they have the option of holding your money up to 180 days) .. Currently I am sitting at almost $20K in funds that are frozen due to this investigation. If you are a business & thinking of using them as a card processor, please keep looking. Find a company who have an open line of communication. Although they have a call center, the call center just filters people through escalating a ticket to the department who will then give you a notification on your dashboard that just has you fill out the paperwork again. If you want to run a good business, stay away from Square.

    I have been with Square for over a year now with my online platform. I had somebody scam my business. They purchased $1000 worth of product. I filled the order, they came into my store and showed me their receipt. I passed the bag over to them, then the person disputed the claim two weeks later. So it was credit card fraud online.. and said they never came in my store so square reimbursed them. I am out $1000 in merchandise. They ruled with the bank even though someone came and showed a receipt to pick up their goods. Be aware!! Square does nothing to help. They said, "Oh sorry the bank won, you need to get a lawyer and go after the bank," and never helped me out at all..

    The worst service I’ve ever had with an online platform. They said I should review credit cards before I accept them. ???? What?? These are online orders??? Crazy! I am a small business and extremely disappointed with the fact that they just said no sorry we’re taking the money back out of your account because the person said they didn’t come in even though they picked up everything. For every transaction, I have to explain everything to Square in order to receive payment. They create new problems each time, sometimes asking for invoices, customer information, and many other details.     Terrible experience! Yesterday, I opened the app to charge a client, but I couldn't find a way to do it. As a result, I had to leave without completing the transaction. I don't understand why Square doesn't have a simple button that says "GET PAID" immediately upon opening the app. Additionally, when I tried to obtain a payment link on the desktop, it was also very difficult, I had to end up calling Square to help me navigate the process; almost ONE HOUR!!!.     I've been using Square for my video production business, but after this experience, I'm looking for alternatives immediately. What Happened

    I received a legitimate payment via ACH bank transfer from a client for a video production contract we won through an RFP process. Square placed the funds on hold, claiming they needed to investigate a potential "credit card scam" - despite this being an ACH transfer, not a credit card payment. I provided all requested documentation about the contract and client relationship. Instead of conducting a proper investigation, Square simply decided the payment was fraudulent and told me the "decision is final." The Real Problem is..

    - Aggressive algorithms with no human oversight: Their fraud detection flagged a legitimate business payment with no reasonable review process.
    - Scripted customer service with no authority: Representatives couldn't provide real explanations and repeatedly said "this decision is final" without actually investigating.
    - Holding legitimate funds hostage: My earned money was inaccessible while I'm actively working on the project.

    - Forcing unnecessary delays: Now I have to issue a refund, wait for processing, and arrange alternative payment methods - all because of their mistake and we're already in pre-production and I can't pay myself or contractors on this project.

    The Bigger Issue - This isn't just poor customer service - it's a fundamental problem with how Square treats legitimate businesses. When your payment processor can arbitrarily decide your earned income is "fraudulent" with no real recourse, it creates an unstable foundation for running a business. For a company that markets itself as supporting small businesses, holding legitimate payments without proper investigation and offering no meaningful appeal process is completely unacceptable.

    If you're a small business owner, especially one that occasionally receives larger payments, consider a different payment processor. Don't rely on Square - this experience has shown me they can't be trusted with important business transactions. Update: Currently switching to alternative payment solutions that treat legitimate business relationships with appropriate respect.

    My experience with this company has been very disappointing, especially regarding transactions. The process is slow, unclear, and in several cases, charges or holds were made without apparent justification. There is no transparency or clear answers from the support team, and resolving a simple issue takes days, even weeks. It's frustrating to trust a platform that manages money in such an unprofessional manner. I don't recommend it if you're looking for security, speed, and responsible treatment.

    Let me start off by saying that the app itself feels quite frequently. Also would like to say that they like to play games with your money they like to accept the money, especially in large quantities and then tell you that they need to verify your identity and then they go onto verify your identity again and then they go on to send you more information to verify your business and your identity and it just seems like they’re holding onto your money to gain interest being as it’s in the Bank And then they want you to verify your customers information which is absurd and then they pretend like like it’s all part of a natural process of them holding your money for an infinite amount of time. It’s just ridiculous. If you plan on using this app plan on not seeing your money for a while

    The worst system. And customer service is not any better. System fails during service hours or will just update in the middle of service hours causing loss of revenue. Tell that to customer service and they read off the script and say sorry to hear that. There is nothing we can. This is by far the worst company to deal with. I lose time and money dealing with it. If I could find an address I would send them a bill for the loss revenue. Do yourself a favor and look for other POS before using this junk. Their system is the other meaning of POS

    Square is a fraud and scam. They took my money and then closed and deactivated my account. I have chatted and sent many emails with no resolution. I did a refund to the client and they told me, the refund is under review. Square not only violated me now they have stolen from my client. Everyone on here that has given the same or similar review, we need to file a class action lawsuit. Square agents lie and they all read from the same script, they disconnect from the chat, they hang the phone up in your face. Square agents won't allow you to speak to upper management. I need them to refund the money so the client can get their money back. I can't afford to take a list like this. Square refund the invoice. I never received the payment because you trying to steal it. Square is a scam.

    Terrible. Shouldn't even exist. Marked my business as fraud, and didn't deposit the payment that the customer had paid me for the service. And now I'm pretty much forced to issue refund back to the customer. For another form of payment. Mind you. My business is fresh and been owing it for a couple of months now. Had no issues with my recent payments at all from my customers. Please do us all a favor and close this transaction service for good. 👋🏾

    The worst payment platform, easy to open, purchase terminal and mobile terminal to use with phone. I never had this company, I made my first charge, and they cancel my account, telling me I do practices not allowed by them. I had cc authorization form from customer and invoice and all set properly, they close my account, took 2000 dollars from customer and never gave it back, and this scammers contacted me after 2 months. I told the customer to file a charge off to get money back, Square contacted me like nothing happen and asked me if this was a honest and legal charge off. The reality is they keeped the money, never put into my account or refund customer and after they close the account with no legal right, they contacted me to ask this questions.

    I have all the emails to prove they are a scam and bunch of liars. They close accounts with no right, they treat you like crap and you never had dealings with Square. You call them and they refuse everything and denied any wrongdoing, I have the habit to record everything and send a lot of emails to have proof. I'm reporting their scam practices to the proper agencies as well of providing proof they are the worst. STAY AWAY FROM THIS SCAMMERS.

    Frustrated by False Information and Delays. I'm extremely disappointed with Square. Today, I received a completely false statement from one of their representatives when I asked why my funds were being held longer than usual — something that has been happening more and more frequently lately. I clearly have official reports showing two transactions processed yesterday — one at 5:36 AM and another at 9:06 AM. However, the representative claimed: "YOUR money is not being held by us, as YOU made the transfer after 5 pm local time... YOUR bank does THAT... It's posted for up to 2 business days."

    This is not only inaccurate but also insulting to anyone who keeps track of their finances. I made the transfers well before 5 PM, so their excuse doesn’t add up. It's frustrating and unacceptable to be given misleading responses when asking valid questions about my own money. I expected better from a company handling financial transactions. If Square can't provide transparency and accountability, how are customers supposed to trust them.

    Horrible. We own a automotive repair shop. Some weeks are busy and others are slow. Once in a while, we will have a large job like $7000 engine or what not. Every time we have a larger transaction, they freeze our account and it screws us for ordering parts on time and makes us look horrible. We are leaving Square to go with a real merchant. Cheaper and no hassles like square always creates.

    i just got scammed also. First customer just paid $7,222.40 and they deactivated after they paid. Account was opened for 2 weeks and as soon as I got funds in there. They took it. I spoke to Kate and Kathy and another non professional jerk! that hung up on me. They claim to not have anyone you can speak to at all. Which is total BS. Just a bunch of people with accents that answer you. I will make sure to file a lawsuit against this fraudulent company. We need to all join forces to stop this. I wish I would have read these reviews before. Now I cannot pay my bills.

    Just used Square for the first time!! And it will Certainly be the last. Had a customer pay me $3000 on the credit card. Square deactivated my account. Locked it. Now they're holding the funds for 90 days. They said they will release my money into my bank account in 90 days. I will Not recommend them to my worst enemy.

    Beyond the worst payment processing company. Every transaction needs to be reviewed and it takes 24-48 business hours to complete. Complete bullcrap.     They create false fraud inquiries to hold large payments for days even with contact and invoice provided. They over reach their responsibility in an attempt to collect interest on funds ran through them. Highly recommend finding a more honest service. Very dissatisfied. Do not recommend.     The worst company I have ever worked with. Was sent faulty register, that I purchased in full. The systems never performed as promised. Spent 2 months with Square being forced to troubleshoot their issues with my time, and repeating every time you call in. Square offered the bare minimum resolution each time, which in turn lost me revenue every time the register was used for 2 months. After square's refusal to offer a reasonable resolution that didn't involve me wasting more of my time trying to fix their problems, I requested a to refund and was completely refused and ignored. After placing a BBB complaint, I received a laughable message from the square complaints manager, which refused any resolution, but requested I contact them to discuss further or if I had concerns, which I did, and have not received a response back yet (it's been 6 months now, but maybe they are just busy) I strongly suggest anyone thinking to use this company, don't.

    Only getting one star because I had to to write a review. As I’m reading other reviews I see A LOT of people have had the same issue. My husband used it before, no problems. This time, they requested he send in invoices and other documents to complete the transaction. All that was requested, was submitted to them. Got an email this morning, stating they terminated his account and will release his $5900 in 90 days. Although they already charged my husband's client's credit card. So they keep our money for 90 days, for what?!?! Called customer service and they are useless as well. Not sure how they get by withholding people's money with absolutely no reason as to why!

    They don't even deserve 1 star. Awful, Awful, Awful. I have been trying to rectify an issue with them for over 2 weeks, representatives are rude and unhelpful. Over 6 hours of phone calls so far with no resolve, managers do not call back and nearly impossible to get one on the phone. I have been refused a manager on my last 3 calls in.     They are changing me for a refund that I gave the customer. The payment never made it to my bank and when I called the gentleman refuse to let me talk to a manager. He told me he could not tie the line up while getting a manager. I was told he would have manager call me back and no one never called. Also I called back and they give you a number that only gives you the run around like texting but it will say someone will be right with you and after 10 min no reply. I will take legal action if they deduct $54 from my account and from this point on I will never use them again.

    Stop!!!! Don’t do it. Find someone else to help you. Square is a big scam they. I started a small business a few days ago. I needed a credit card payment processor. I made a huge mistake listening to one of the sales representatives telling me that the process with this company is smooth and easy from first time small businesses that’s just starting up. Well yeah. I get all my information in about my business. They reviewed, gave me the ok that my account was up and ready to be used, so hey I really thought everything was fine.

    I get my first customer and yes it’s a credit card so I run it. It go through, sent me a receipt so I’m thinking everything is still ok. A few minutes go by I look on the app to see how everything looks since it was my first transaction. Well a slap in the face is what I got because it was nothing in the account. I give it a few more minutes. Still nothing so I called Square to see what was going on with the payment. They say, "It’s on hold." Now I’m thinking like, "Ok, it’s cool. I know it’s the first payment, so ok." I asked him how long do the hold usually be. He goes to say they need more information about my business. I say, "Ok, like what?" I go into my account. They asking for stuff I don’t have yet. Mind you I just started the business.

    I talked to 5 different people before I can get a supervisor to see what was going on. How do I get 3 months of bank transactions on a new business and why wasn’t I told that I needed that before I can use it? I do what the man told me then 3 am the next day they emailed me telling me my account was deactivated but still have my money. Now I can’t get in touch with nobody til Monday. Just sad. You can’t make an honest living nowadays. Everybody just want to take from you.

    The worst customer service in the world. They send you to a person that only texts with you. I made a mistake and charged a customer 630.00 for a 63.00 item. I immediately caught the mistake and sent him a refund and recharged him for the 63.00. This all happened within a 3-minute period. I got my billing for the show only to find they charged me 7.5 % on the 630.00 charge. I had total sales that day of 341.00. They charged me 25.75. Crooks. I would not recommend these jokers to anyone. You make a mistake, hit a couple extra zeros, not paying attention and they are gonna stick it to you brother. I text them and ask for one of the managers to call me. Their reply was like, “Sorry sucker we got you.”

    Warning to Merchants: Be Careful with Square. Square has shown clear bias toward fraudulent customers. As a merchant, I experienced a chargeback situation where a customer bought my product and then fraudulently disputed the charge. Instead of supporting the business, Square sided with the customer and did nothing to protect me or investigate the fraud properly. This kind of behavior feels like a betrayal to those of us who rely on their platform. I’m deeply disappointed and feel that Square's policies open the door for scam buyers to exploit honest sellers.     Square Withheld My Funds and Offered Zero Accountability. I am appalled by the complete lack of accountability and service I received from Square. After purchasing a digital gift card through their platform—intended for use at a small business—they unilaterally deactivated the card and withheld the remaining balance of $171.00, despite multiple documented attempts to resolve the matter.

    Even after all conditions were met—including proof that a prior dispute had been cancelled and formal documentation submitted—Square refused to restore access to the funds or issue a refund. Instead, I was met with scripted responses, deflection, and the bizarre claim that I was “not a customer,” despite having created and accessed an account through their system.

    To make matters worse, Square made it nearly impossible to speak to a real person, escalated nothing, and essentially pushed responsibility onto the small business, which had already done its part to advocate on my behalf. Square’s internal systems seem to lack any transparency or chain of accountability, and their “support” was dismissive at best. The bottom line: Square took my money, erased my account access, and ignored all efforts to make it right. If you value your time, your money, or basic customer support—avoid using Square.

    I own a catering company and previously, we've used Square at a different restaurant so I had some pretty positive experience in the past. I've even participated in beta tests and provided lots of feedback. Last year, I left the previous business and opened my own cafe (franchise) and started to do catering for the corporate brand of the franchise. We found we needed a POS to use at street fairs and events as well as for invoicing for catering so I set up a Square account and accepted a catering order via the invoice system.

    The next day, I received an email that my account was disabled and when I called support, they said it was the final decision and they couldn't help me any further. There was no reason or further information. One rep was able to help me get the payment refunded but still no reason why the account was disabled or what I could provide to prove the business information. They're unable to send me to any other manager or person to help.

    Square abruptly closed my verified account and is holding $200 of my hard-earned money with no justification. I complied with all of their verification requirements, used the platform properly for legitimate transactions, and followed every rule. After contacting customer service multiple times, I received nothing but generic, copy-and-paste responses. No one could explain why the account was closed, and no one would help me retrieve my funds. I have been completely stonewalled with zero accountability from Square.

    This company is shady, unresponsive, and acts with no transparency. If they can just take your money and cut you off without a reason, no one is safe using their service. I do NOT recommend Square to anyone—especially small businesses and individuals who rely on quick access to their funds. Desired Resolution: Immediate return of my $200, A written explanation for the account closure, Accountability for how they treat verified users.

    My experience has been horrible with the Square app which they call square.com and also squareup.com which makes things even more confusing. To launch my own retail store, I started answering questions and in fact, there were so many questions that I was suspicious of why they needed this information. In fact, I suspect, although I do not know, that somewhere in their terms of service they can sell this personal information, otherwise why do you require so much information abt me? I stopped answering the questions but had already input my credit card info. I had 7 days to cancel before I would be charged.

    I called on day 5 and spoke with someone for 18 minutes. He said he could not FIND my email address or name despite numerous attempts. I now think this is deliberate. I think square inputs the info AFTER 7 days so they can charge me. I have since been charged $11.35 for who knows what and the $32.00 monthly fee. I then called the customer support line today. They did find my email this time but claimed they found no prices applied to my account! Through my bank, I now have stopped payment for any future charges and am disputing the charges made because I called to cancel my subscription within 7 days. What a mess!! I do not recommend.

    Square has non business even being in operation. I have several businesses and one where I have had my sweater account for 8+ years. I have a newer business for my tea and I have an entertainment company. My square for the entertainment I had a show and had 1300 that I invoiced and was paid. These people deactivated my account and told me they are holding my money for 90 days and then somehow for my Tea company my payments for tea that came in they are holding it for 90 days and deactivated my account saying that they can’t support my activity which is bull.

    I’ve been using them, all of my businesses are LLC and compliant and they want to deactivate my account with no clear or valid reason but to hold my money!!!! And the customer service bless their hearts but they are useless. This company needs to be shut down and to put a hold on my money that was paid to me for my product and services is unacceptable! Absolutely unacceptable, do not use them. The one account that I’ve had for years I’m closing and going a different route because square is crooked and cons.

    Although I read a lot of bad reviews about the Square, we trusted Square as we never had any issue until recently. I was on call for straight 9 hours to resolve 1 issue, but no help. They hung up on me. As a manager of restaurant, they didn't help me and I had to bring my owner on call while he was on vacation to other part of world but they hung up on us after being on hold for 30 mins+. After that, when I called back, they transferred my call to almost 5 different department but at last customer service representative, named Sophie literally said, "I CANNOT HELP YOU OUT OR CONNECT YOU TO MY SENIOR. THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO". Never have I experienced such a worst customer service in my entire life. Definitely switching to other POS for all my business soon. SQUARE ACTUALLY SUCKS BIG TIME.

    I would not ever in life advise anyone to open a account with this company. 1) They are not a bank yet they hold your money as if they are but longer than a bank. 2) The reps lie, I have been waiting since 02/07/2025 for a supervisor to call me, I was told that it would be 2-3 business days here it is 02/14/2025 and yet to have talk to one. I have sent paperwork more than once to prove I am a business owner. I have had a payment from a customer returned to them for no reason. Just because is not a reason to make me lose money.     They apparently can pull money from your account without notification! I own a plumbing and heating company. If a customer for whatever reason thinks they were overcharged, Square credits them back. Not even asking the company what happened or how much was spent on materials that I PURCHASED! They took a total of $7135.00 from my account with 0 notification! You can't get a straight answer from the customer service agents at all. They tell me 2-4 weeks while they investigate the circumstances then I may get the money back. Meanwhile, I'm out the $4876.00 I spent on materials that's in the customer's home. Square is the worst company ever and I can't see how this is even legal!

    One star is generous. If I could give negative stars, I would. Square has been holding my funds for months and keeps giving me the run around as to why the funds haven't transferred. How can a business like mine survive if we can't get paid for sales? Can you say FRAUD? I finally filed a fraud complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. Their behaviors are criminal. Steer clear.

    On12/30/24 I took a payment for 1200. Square already took their 35 fee. Now for the last 3 weeks the deposit date to my bank account has changed. When I call they keep putting me on with other people making me re explain things and will not under any circumstances talk to a supervisor an now they deactivated my account. Somebody please help...

    I was so excited when I learned Square was going to build a restaurant platform. So I wish it was not so... I have been having nothing but problems, I have not been able to use food printers in 5 days so food items are not printed to prep stations. With having to hand deliver each ticket to the kitchen from the dining room causes delays, lost tickets, and improper prep....

    And this is my problem with square as told to me by customer support... 1. There is no live phone support to speak about the problem 2. It is the customer phone support that must create a "ticket" to engineering. 3. Engineering then has two days to respond to that request and let you know the issue is being looked into 4. After that the department has no obligation to ever contact you again with any updates. 5. If you want to speak to engineering about an update please refer to #1 above. I owe square over 20K on the loan problem, I wonder how fast they will contact me of I stop the payments!!!! DO NOT USE SQUARE, and I challenge any Square rep to dispute the above review and complaint!

    Honestly, I found this site to share a review of my experience. I nearly gagged at the 1.1 rating for Square. Not much more needs to be said as the service of Square is absolutely awful across the board. My "I'm done" moment is that I tried 3 times to get them to increase my Bill Pay limits since I often have bills larger than their $5k limit to pay and was tired of chopping them up into a ton of smaller pieces to use the service. They simply decided that "I didn't qualify" with no context and that was it. Save yourself the pain and pay a bit more for a better payroll experience. Never want to use any of their services again, I'm that frustrated.

    The worst service I have ever experienced. I had so many issues with them. They are slow, not flexible and hard to get your stuff done. They ask so much in fees and deliver nothing in return. Extremely stressful engaging with them. I had to lose my account 'cause I changed my phone number and couldn’t verify my business no more. They did not give me the opportunity to use my email for further verification codes or just to update my new phone number. They told me there is nothing they can do and I should create a new account with another business email (which is insane because I do not have a second business email). I am so glad I do not use their poor quality services no more. I can now easily proceed with e transfers directly to my bank account without having to pay them ridiculous fees for each transaction.

    Square does not issue all refunds. I order online and shop with square card. I do not receive all refunds. Also if you are with square watch your balance carefully because they have a way of manipulating your funds. You can have 1k, make no transactions and watch how square slowly but surely eats away at. I have to find another company. Square is not honorable. If you pump gas with card it will say pending $100 however you only pumped $50 in gas. Pay close attention to how square manipulates that some cases you may not get the remainder $50 back. I do not recommend square. They are stealing from their customers

    I am trying to claim Payment Card Settlement and they want 2004 through 2019 Credit card numbers. I got all the numbers from other Merchant processor I worked since 2009 through to first half of 2013. I work Square 2013 through 2024 and I need Visa and Master Card Statements but Square only provides starting 2022. I paid over $70000 merchant processor fees to Square and I am entitled to get most of them back but since I don't get numbers from Square, I can't. I talk to Square Supervisor, she just apologized for inconvenience. I told them thousands of your Merchants will be affected and they will come back and hit you hard if they don't get what they deserved and received another apology.

    Slow, negligent and ineffective customer service. So many issues and features that don’t work properly or thoroughly and you can’t get any help with anything. To call in it can take hours of being passed back and forth for a simple issue and email support does not respond and when they do they can’t help… but now my business is so wrapped up in everything square and I’ve invested $1,000 on equipment, it will be such a headache to switch everything over - gonna have to ride it out until a slower season when I can build a new website and set up new scheduling software to something more equipped for a spa/appointments based business. If you need more advanced infrastructure than simple point of sale, just look elsewhere. You won’t be able to get support unless you can make calling them a full time job itself…

    I had an issue with an “automatic gratuity” addition of 15% to multiple invoices. This issue was brought to my attention by a diligent client, as I do NOT ever add a gratuity to any interior design invoices. ANU, my Customer Service Rep from squareup.com was on the phone with me for 1.25 hrs., attempting to assist me in REMOVING the option for ANY gratuities on ANY invoice sent via Square to my interior design clientele.

    Anu was gracious, patient, determined to solve my problem, placed me “on hold” to ask for addt’l assistance, and she uncovered the exact issue with my Virtual Terminal and “why” Square was automatically adding a gratuity to multiple invoices. Unbeknownst to me? This has been occurring since May, 2024. After following Anu’s precise instructions, step-by-step as she walked me through a process? This issue was resolved, and ALL gratuity options were removed fr my squareup.com account. She was superior in her manner, mindset, and management of My Issue— which was, potentially, a significant PR nightmare. (How does one explain an automatic addition of a 15% gratuity on an invoice for goods purchased to ANY Client??!) Thank you, ANU, for your help, patience, understanding, and your professionalism!! I’m indebted to you. Thank you!!!

    Manager Harmony w/ Square is Rude & Horrible. Manager Harmony w/ Square gave me the most humiliating, insulting treatment today. She was attacking me, rude, cutting me off, dictated when to move to next question without finishing prior, didn’t let me speak & hung up on me. I generate $201K in sales yet Square raised fee from 2.9 to 3.3% on virtual invoices transaction which is what I called today to resolve & got humiliated instead.

    I’ve given them 3 years of my business but they proved they don’t value me as customer at all. Nowhere a company instead of lowering fees as you’ve been loyal to them - they raise them on you. And you try to resolve but get attacked & hung up on. I’m in complete shock of how horrible Square is and its manager Harmony is absolute despicable person who should be fired! If she will continue working I’m definitely leaving Square. I’ll take my business elsewhere who won’t abuse me like this Co did! Stay away from Square!

We took a payment from a repeat customer, they said it was a fraudulent card, had to issue refund to our customer, takes seven days for refund to be issued. Our customer was very unhappy.     I would leave negative stars for this one. They deactivated my account after I took ONE payment from a family member after completing services for them, didn’t and still won’t provide me with a reason why. When I asked for a manager they said based on my “status” I couldn’t speak to one. From the one payment it took, they are continuing to hold the entire payment hostage for 90 days. Then, even after I removed myself, they continued to send me marketing emails. Then today after being deactivated for at least a month, I got charged for their text services and something else I never even got the chance to use.

    Their 24/7 support is NOT 24/7. No one knows anything about your account. It took them 45 minutes just to find mine once. They must not keep good notes because when I had to call multiple times, the next person had no idea what I was calling about or who had told me something else prior. Absolutely ridiculous and the fees are absurd. Not. Worth. It.

    A walk in customer paid with a credit card, it turned out it was stolen as Square claimed!! They blocked my account and even the payments that were not in question! They forced me to refund the stolen card payment to release the rest of the funds! It was a big mistake moving to Square! Just don’t buy their poor service.

    I have been using Square for many years. Recently they put my account under review and have been holding my invoice payments over $3000 for many weeks now. It hurts small business that needs to pay employees and rent. NOBODY ever contacted me to let me know or ask any questions of me, no phone call, text, or email. I called customer service to find this out. Nobody on that review team can be contacted. This is outrageous. I now see how many horrible reviews Square has and I understand why. I will be changing all of my billing soon.

    So I placed an order through a highly recommended small business for a special gift for my significant other. So a week later my package still had not shipped. No updates at all. I tried contacting the business. But magically all their contact information was removed from their account. So I found their email in my order receipt. Imagine that... Their email suddenly doesn't exist either. So I contact Square. The customer service agent literally told me It's not their problem, they can't help me. I need to reach out to the business. I told them I've already tried that, and she told me to wait for their response. Because it's not their problem. Told me the only way to get my money back from the now bare website I ordered from was to dispute it with my bank.

    I told the chick they are very much responsible since they processed the payment in the first place and own rights to the web page building site. Even copy and pasted their own privacy and terms and conditions right to the chat. She still showed no empathy or care that she was now breaking the law. I told her I was reporting them to the BBB. Before doing so I found this page... Turns out, that just a week before I placed my order, they stole thousands of dollars and the website from, and deactivated access to the Business owners. I instantly called my bank and filed a dispute. This company purposefully bought out a long-standing web page building company, stole from and bankrupt all the business owners, and is still using their pages to steal from their customers.

    We all should band together and seriously start a class action lawsuit. I mean I'm pissed about my own money, but I can literally feel the pain Square has caused all of the business owners. Such an evil company purposefully destroying good businesses and amazing people and they think they will just keep getting away with all of it. We need to do something. We need to stand up for ourselves and fight back.

    I use Square to cash my work checks. My recent check went through my money was added to my account and then 10 days later square takes back my money and says the check was blurry. I have been calling, emailing everyday trying to get this resolved. I have submitted new pics of the check customer service says this issue needs to be submitted to a higher ups but the claim isn't submitted instead I'm lied to by every customer service rep I talk to saying they will submit my claim. I'm being punished for square inadequacy if the check was blurry it shouldn't of been approved I should of gotten an email stating so and to resubmit a better pic not approve it then take it back days later.

    On top of that they are also saying I owe them 351.03 that they try to take out of my connecting account s 4 times a day and not one person I've talked to knows why this amount is being taken from me. There's no check ever for that amount nor one even close to that amount. If that was a check that was blurry again that's on square I was never sent an email about this other unknown check being blurry. Why was it approved if it was? When was this check submitted? How long ago? Nobody knows All they do is say I owe them this money but there's no record of anything on my account. I can't get answers to either problem.

    I work hard for my money as most do and having it taken back and nobody helping you to resolve this issue. They pretty much took it back because of their mistake and they are treating me like I'm a criminal trying to cash bad checks when it was them who has now stolen my money and will not even acknowledge me. I call ever day and it's just a joke to customers service, it's not their money so why would they care. I have never dealt with so many unprofessional people who lie and never even submit my claim as they say.

    I've asked now if the money has been sent back to my employer nobody knows I've asked why I'm I being charged this $351.03 nobody knows I've asked what can I do to get my money back nobody knows and doesn't help. I just want my money back and to resolve this and get rid of square. I regret ever doing business with them. At this point they are thieves that stole my money and will not give it back or answer or help me. I have no idea what to do anymore I can't get help or answers.

    Square transferred $500 of mine to a closed bank account. After catching the mistake I contacted customer service and was told to add the correct bank account and the funds will instantly be transferred in 7-14 days. I waited, nothing happened. I contacted them again and was told to provide a transaction number showing the funds were sent back to square. I did that, nothing happened. I contacted them again and was told I needed to provide the bank manager name, email address and a letter stating the funds were sent to square. I did that, and was told an email could not be accepted as a letter. I had to "get a physical letter from the bank and take a photo of it" and then email it to square. I did that, nothing happened. At this point, I think its a lost cause. What should have been a simple correction has turned into months of back and forth. Square will steal you money plain and simple.

    I have been using Square for a while and they are "ok" in their customer support, but in August we signed up for Square Payroll and I cannot believe how much time and stress this portion of Square has caused me. They didn't pay a State FMLI tax that I authorized them to pay. They told me I didn't authorize them. I sent them the screenshot of where it was authorized. They then gave another lame reason they didn't pay it. Then I found out that they reported 0 wages on a quarter that our company had over $3800 in wages. They don't seem to reply to my emails with all me attached documentation. They are a big problem and do not do their job.

    Before you get square, please search for other pos. I regret using them as a pos and whenever problems occur on their end, they never take responsibility. They didn’t do their job which was filing unemployment tax because they do payroll, they took no responsibility and I got stuck with having to pay the state $1250 in penalties. They took more from card sales than what they said they would in their contract… Good luck trying to get proper service from customer service support.

    This was the worst experience with any company I’ve ever worked with. I am a small business and am a vendor at large festivals, I use the Square however my money accidentally was transferred to a closed account. My bad, but it’s three weeks later and they can’t find it. I have given them letters from my bank stating that it was bounced back weeks ago And I talked to a person from Square every day for at least two hours mostly on hold. I am planning a trip down to headquarters to see if that helps me Thanksgiving is tomorrow and I have had no money for my holiday. I am extremely disappointed and panicked. I honestly think they’ll never find my money.

It seems like a great idea because they take a percentage out and put it in savings and it's great... but I just went to take money out and it WOULDN'T ALLOW ME ACCESS TO MY FUNDS! INSANE. On top of it, there is no customer support around it. They just said my request is with the elusive "account team" that conveniently cannot be contacted directly. Don't do it, seriously.     I have used Square only a handful of times and I will never use them again. Long story short, I have 4 transactions totaling $700 and I am unable to transfer the funds to my bank because the account is under review. It's been under review for a year now and I have called every month and am told the same thing. A review usually takes 24-48 hours. It's been a year. Finally, after submitting all requested information to verify myself and the type of business I have, I received an email saying everything was reviewed and am able to transfer funds again. The review never got lifted however and am back again calling them only to get the same runaround of being told that the account is under review, and they will need to escalate the issue to their internal team who will get back to me with an email. With as many people this is happening to, I feel like there is enough information for a class action lawsuit.

    If I could leave zero stars I would. I have had nothing but problems with this company from my information being stolen and hacked to poor customer service and them locking up my account (when it was me trying to use it but when I was being hacked they were useless). They shut down my Business page without warning me and told me it was because they weren’t sure of my identity. I’ve had them for over two years. I don’t know how this could be. I run my business to them and that’s about to change. I will be looking for a new company to run my POS system through as well as, my business page. Extremely disappointed. I would highly recommend looking for a different brand. This one is garbage. Gotta figure out what to do with the terminal that I spent money on that I will no longer be using.

    I had the worst experience with Square Pay. The api is ridiculously difficult to use, and every time I try to make a payment, it just doesn’t work. It’s frustrating, especially when I’m trying to get things done quickly. On top of that, I keep receiving endless SMS messages that are completely unnecessary. This app is a total headache and not worth the hassle. I’ll definitely be looking for an alternative!

    I’m extremely disappointed with Square’s handling of my account. After they deactivated my previous business account last year, I gave them another chance with a new business, hoping for a better experience. Unfortunately, they have let me down again. They suddenly deactivated my account without warning, claiming they couldn’t support my business needs. Even worse, they’re holding on to my funds for 90 days, which makes it impossible for me to access the money I need to fulfill services for customers who have already paid. This leaves both me and my customers in a difficult position, as they think their payments have been processed while I have no way to cover my costs or offer refunds.

    Square’s decision has disrupted my business operations once again, and the lack of transparency or flexibility in this situation feels unfair. If you’re a small business counting on quick access to funds, be cautious about using Square. This experience has cost me time, money, and customer trust. I expected better support and flexibility from a payment processor.

    On 10/30/24 I received a $6900 payment which triggered an account review. I submitted everything and was cleared. Square processed the payment so they could take out their fees, of course and then 2 days later I went to transfer the funds out and recieved ANOTHER review for the same transaction. This transaction asked for my ID which was just approved 2 days prior. After submitting my ID, I get an email saying activities in my account cannot be supported and they are holding funds for 90 days.

    If the transaction had something wrong with it, isn't it against regulations to have processed and charged fees from it? I go to refund the customer and instead of refunding with his money sitting in the account, Square attempts to take the funds from the bank account linked. My bank blocked it and flagged it as fraud thank God. They recommended I have the police station put this on file. A police officer offered to be present while I call Square and see what the issue is. He was able to hear, and write a detailed report of them telling me that transactions can only have 1 refund attempt and since the first attempt failed, I would have to refund the customer. They said by refunding the customer, I would erase any risk for chargebacks/refunds and they would initiate a transfer for the remaining funds to reimburse me.

    After the call, the account did show that they initiated a standard transfer just as they said, so I refunded the customer. When the transfer date hit, they changed it to transferring me $0.00 and suspending the funds that were initiated by them. They clearly did this to deceive me into covering the refund so they can keep the payment for themselves. Luckily, I had the police report and they're going to be losing a lot more than $6900 after the penalties they will be receiving. Because of this police report, the FTC was able to prove wilful intent and is currently finding out if they can skip over a warning notice and go straight to issuing violations because this year they are really putting their foot down on scams committed to elders and I am 62. Scammers messed with the wrong grandpa. I also turned in all names of the associates who were informed of this and refused to do anything about it.

    Our business, established in 2004, has used Square since they first launched. One of our long-standing clients, who had never previously raised any concerns, unexpectedly issued a chargeback for a 12-month service agreement using their AMEX card. Square immediately withheld the entire amount for the 12 months. We submitted extensive documentation, including signed agreements and email threads showing the client had no complaints about our services. Thirty days prior, the client informed us they were planning to close their business, so we offered an additional 30 days of free service and promptly halted all withdrawals. However, attempting to resolve this with Square support has been frustrating—they consistently defer to the bank, claiming they have no control over the situation. As a result, we're now in the process of switching to a different merchant service provider for all three of our companies.

    On 10/30/2024, I took an ACH PAYMENT for $9,994.53, to have a security hold put on my account which I figured it was normal for the protocol on to have my ACCOUNT DEACTIVATED TODAY by email saying that, "Because of the type of transaction we will not be able to support your business, and you cannot get your money back for 90 days!" I am out of business before it started. My client is upset to no end, from their reviews I see people are writing the DEPT OF FINANCIAL PROTECTION CALIFORNIA.     If you're seeking a safe way to process transactions, look elsewhere. I have never had anyone request a refund until recently. I have an online written policy stating that if you cancel a pet transport within 24 hours you do not get a full refund because of all the research, time, communications, gas, transaction fees, etc involved with making that transport happen. The customer cancelled a couple of hours before the transport. I gave the customer a partial refund and deducted a very small portion to cover what was mentioned. The customer disputed the transaction to receive the full amount back. I spent time, energy, and never got back the transaction fee I paid to make this transport happen.

    Square allowed the customer's bank to decide what the verdict was. Of course, even after sending a lot of detail and screenshots, her bank still decided to rule in favor of the culprit. Square never did anything to make the situation right even after contacting them directly. With a payment system like square, you might as well take a risk accepting transactions in cash or Zelle without the fees.

    I purchased the Square Terminal from Best Buy a month ago and have been using it to run my salon business. Out of the blue, Square deactivated my account on Friday with no warning or explanation. I immediately reached out to their customer support, only to be told to email back to the same email and wait for a response by 5 pm that day. I never received that response.

    All weekend, I tried calling, only to be met with no answers. When I called again first thing Monday morning, I was hung up on four times, seemingly just to avoid the customer satisfaction survey at the end. The representatives were unable to give me any explanation or let me speak to a manager. The entire experience has been frustrating and unprofessional.

    Square claims to be small-business-friendly, but in my experience, they are anything but salon-friendly. I run several salons, and I’ve never encountered such poor service from a payment processor. I wouldn’t recommend Square to anyone in the salon industry or any small business for that matter. The lack of transparency and disregard for customer service is a huge red flag.

    Squareup seems to prefer restaurant businesses as all of their recent changes are for restaurants. I'm an artist. Today I discovered that 98% of my artwork wasn't showing up on my website because of the recent changes done by Square. I had to reassign categories for all 200 items because they don't care. There's no point calling them, they just don't care. I'll be moving my site in 2026. After 6yrs with them, I'm done. No, I do not recommend unless you run a restaurant.

    So basically, I’ve been using Square for a few years now and what I’ve noticed is anytime a customer challenges like transaction rather there in present swipe their car you take the picture, you write the contract and everything at the customer files a complaint with their bank you will lose your money And there’s nothing about it so I will be cautious about using as far as credit card transactions because if a customer can challenge the transaction square's going to put the money on hold and they’re gonna refund the money to the customers bank and you will lose

    Square is awful! It started out strong but then spammed my inbox with unnecessary information about loans, payroll, credit card offers. This is overwhelming and caused me to overlook one very important message about account verification - AFTER I had already been using the service. As a result, Square deactivated my account without notice and without remedy. They are currently holding my funds and I have no understanding of when or if I will receive them. Furthermore they were my only CC processing tool, so they effectively have also shut down my business. I have spoken to three customer service agents to no avail or cure. I wish I could tell everyone not to use this service!

    Choosing Square was the absolute WORST option I could have chosen as a super small business. Their algorithms or whatever their system uses is nothing short of a bipolar AI program, the same system that will alert you saying your business qualifies for a loan, will turn around and tell you that you DON'T qualify after you've signed the agreement docs lol. This has now happened twice to me. The first 2 loans went great, paid them back, easy peasy! 3rd small loan they offered, I got prepared for that money, spent money on other products to prepare to spend the loan money on main products... All the sudden "YOU'RE NOT APPROVED!!!" Almost went out of business overnight.

    They make you feel safe and like you can trust them then they literally are responsible for killing your business overnight. The most RIDICULOUS reasons they will give you IF YOU CAN ACTUALLY FIND OUT WHY lol. But the point is.... Square will make you trust them, then at your companies most vulnerable times they KILL your business. They just did it to me AGAIN.... Offered me a small biz loan I really needed, used what I had to prepare.... 2 days later "Oh we're sorry your business doesn't qualify" lol. It's all done by computers, not humans, and their system lies to you, gives you hope, then turns into AI Hitler and initiates genocide on your company. Worst decision I ever made was using this company and I'm about to change. No way you can trust a company who uses a system that LIES to you! Period!

    The online shop sync and platform is very poor. Technical support is poor and limited. I've given 3 months of trying to set up the online shop and have had 0 progress with website having products available for purchase. A lot of time wasted. The pos system is fine for store front. I would not recommend Square to a business with plans to sync storefront and online presence.

    I wish I could put -5 stars. WARNING!!!! Do NOT use Square for your small business banking needs unless you don’t want to receive/or have access to your funds for weeks at a time. I signed up for my Square account Monday October 7th, received an email stating my funds were to be available to me by the Friday October 11th. It is now the 11th, I have received an email saying my account has been verified… Still no funds. I contacted customer support only to be told that I must wait an additional 1-2 business days before I will receive my money. This will have a HUGE negative impact on my business. I need access to those funds to start on other business projects.

    Do not use Square if you are a farm and need to sell product by the pound in an online store for products that don't weigh exactly 1lb, or are variable weight packages. Even though this appears to be an option and Square will try and make you upgrade to get this feature, this is not an option. Customer support is atrocious. Spent 2 hours going around in circles on the chat. Then finally called and spoke to a live person. They don't even seem to have brought meat at the grocery store themselves, or to understand that for meat and lots of other fresh items the /lb basis is not what is charged if the actual package weighs a different amount than 1lb. I had to explain 6 times what I needed.

    The concept of losing money on each sale, or of over-charging customers didn't seem to bother them at all. Customer service solution initially suggested that I needed to enter every single package of meat (all weighing different amounts) separately into inventory to have this in my store - over 5000 individual items that changes on a monthly basis. Ridiculous. Then, when I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told they would have to see if 'that was an option', then went on a protracted hold - interspersed with 'Give me one second' over 32 times (I counted after the 5-6th time I heard this). Supervisor was more helpful and actually told me it wasn't possible to do what I needed to do on Square. No refund possible, hours of time wasted.

    They block your account for no reason and you can't access your money. Then tell you your account is under review, for no reason, and you can't access your money until they finish. We are seeking damages caused because we couldn't get our money for a job we were on. I'd highly recommend another platform to use.

    I used Square to receive a payment from a customer. The payment went through but square decides they are going to freeze my account and not say anything. Customer service is horrible. They say they can hold all of the money in the account for however long they want. Horrible horrible app. DO NOT USE. I have had problem after problem and they aren't open on weekends. So if something happens on a Friday you're done till Monday. Just keep that on mind also.

    Problem after the magstripe card reader read the credit card and the purchase was authorized the screen goes black and the signature page doesn't appear, transaction cancelled. No help from support other than to suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the app. Can't even give a feedback about it.

    Horrible customer service for a new user, deactivated my account as soon as it was activated with no explanation. Customer service was horrible and could only say what the stock email said. In addition to deactivating my account they took the $$ from the credit card and are holding it for 90 days. It was a lot of money. What are they doing? Laundering money? is that how they do it? If they deactivated my account they should have cancelled the transaction. It's their way of making money, investing while the small business owner can't live.

    I loved Square. It's easy to use, lots of features. Except customer support. I used my square card for a purchase that ended up being a fraudulent company. I provided all the proper documentation. Square kept judging in this company's favor. There is not one person you can speak to in this department. This has been going on since Feb. It's September. Not one call, not one email, not one acknowledgment. Left several complaints, messages. Nothing. I closed my square and went to wix. I can not believe that Square didn't care about fraud, me, or even have the respect for me as their customer to talk to me. I'm extremely disappointed, and very angry.     If I could give negative stars, they truly deserve it. Apart from their fees being high, their services are below sub standard. I sent Square link for payment to a new customer. He made the payment and the app notified that payment has been received. Last time I had received a small payment through square and it was auto credited to my bank account so I did not really check. I thought I would get in my bank in 1-2 days. Even after 15 days, when I did not receive the payment, I reached out to them and they told me that my account is under review and I would have to re-verify my identity. This was only my 2nd transaction and I had already verified my identity at the time of creating the account. They told me after successful verification, they would take an additional 1-2 BUSINESS DAYS to transfer the money to my bank.

    Please take note that I had not received any emails or notifications on the app which showed my account is under review. Anyways, I uploaded my DL and submitted for the review. Now, again after 2-3 days I received long list of documents that I needed to furnish for a successful review. They gave me two options. Either upload all the documents and SHARE MY CUSTOMER'S DETAILS, ALONG WITH NAME OF THE COMPANY, CONTACT PERSON'S EMAIL AND PHONE or refund the money to the customer and take payment through alternate modes like cheque or cash. Mind you, this is a new customer and the materials have been already delivered to him. What if he refuses to pay me after the refund. This Square company is running a scam. Here are 2 reasons why:

    1. Most likely, it will use the data of my customer to approach them to verify and then sell square POS to them. We can't even do anything because this might have been written in the long agreement that we accepted at the time of signing up.
    2. Square gets to use my funds for 20-25 days INTEREST FREE, whereas if they get a bank loan, they would have to produce documents, submit collaterals and pay interest on it. Zero Consequences, unlimited money.

    3. They didn't even reach out to me to inform that they had my money. I had to reach out. Imagine how much money this company has of people / companies who might have not tallied their accounts or simply forgotten to claim.

    Once I receive this transfer, it is a big bye bye to Square.

    PLEASE DO NOT USE SQUARE! This is the worst company I have ever used for my businesses. Every time I charge a customer.. Square holds my money for weeks or months before release my funds. Customer Service doesn’t allow you to speak to A Supervisor! They are currently holding my funds for 90 days before releasing it to me. They deactivated my square acct. And won’t explain why and are now holding my money for 90 days without explanation. I was told that they don’t support my business (transportation), yet for months I’ve been using square.

    Every time I charge a customer they hold my money and ask me to send pictures of my identification, pictures of the customer while charging for the transaction before releasing my funds. Ridiculous! They have returned funds back to a customer because I didn’t send enough photos to prove it was a legitimate charge! They take their fees and hold on to money that is yours for weeks-90 days until the review the transaction, which they usually send back to the customer for lack of pictures/proof. I’LL NEVER USE THIS SCAM COMPANY AGAIN!

    I’ve tried so many times to give Square a chance. But, they continue to remind me that this is the worst company to use for small business wanting to use their app to charge customers for services rendered. If you're ok with charging a customer and Square asking you for photographic proof of purchases and holding your funds for weeks-3 months after charging your customers.. Square won’t disappoint when it comes to holding onto your funds. It never fails! Use Clover or any other company to charge your customers! Square will make you wait for weeks-months to get your money! Square is the worst company you can use to charge your customers for your business!!! This company needs to be investigated!

    Advertises products but doesn't sell them? My team triple checked the stand that we needed, found it on Square, added it to our cart, purchased it- then they upgraded us without letting us know to a stand that does not fit our current iPad. After being sent in circles, they admitted they don't sell the stand we need anymore... Not to mention, between them and Doordash- they keep blaming each other for the last 4 months when it comes to Square needing to integrate our DoorDash system... If we didn't already have the equipment set up at my space, I wouldn't have gone with their system but we are renting the equipment from the landlord of our space (Who also happens to hate square).

    My Dr. uses Square for payments. I paid him $150.00 for an appointment with an HSA. Square put a hold for $300.00 on my HSA account. Then Square paid the Dr. $150.00 and left the $300.00 hold on my account. So, now my account is down $150.00 (paid the Dr.+ $300.00 (from the original hold) for a total of $450.00 now tied up on my HSA account. I have been in contact on a regular basis with my HSA provider and the Dr. The Dr. called Square and they told him there isn't anything they can do. I called Square myself and they were totally useless and told me to wait "for a while" to see if it drops off.

    I'm now into this 3 weeks and they still have a hold on my account for $300.00 and no one seems to be able to get this resolved and in the meantime I can't use any of the funds in my HSA. The CSRs at my HSA tell me they have this issue all the time with Square and they are also very frustrated with these situations that are very frequent with payments on Square. NEVER USE SQUARE. NEVER!!

    So today, after using Square for OVER A YEAR, all of a sudden, decided to "hold my funds due to a security issue". Now keep in mind, if Square wanted to ask me questions, they decided to wait until I, someone who uses Square for her EXTREMELY SMALL freelancing writing projects, had all of $15 deposited. It might not seem like a lot but to me, I worked for that. They had months to ask their "security" questions, but decided "let's wait until she gets a deposit". Then, I was upset, so I called their oh so helpful customer service. They transferred me to their even better security team. This man PROCEEDED TO LIE TO ME. He told me, rather assured me, that he "took care of the security issue, and I could expect my account to be open and I would have access to my funds in 2 hours."

    I should've known better because it was 5:16 pm, and their telephone customer service hours close at 6 pm. So I guess he just lied to get off the phone. Because ****SHOCK ALERT**** 6 hours later I still don't have my money. I will pull all of my money, as soon as this stupid, ridiculous, disgusting security issue is resolved, and I will spend the REST OF MY LIFE TELLING EVERYONE HOW HORRIBLE SQUARE IS. I should also note that of course this GREEDY, DISGUSTING, HORRIBLE APP TOOK THEIR FEES ALREADY FROM MY 2 SMALL FREELANCING JOBS, BUT WON'T PAY ME.

    This company puts a reserve on your account to protect your business from chargebacks, but the issue with this is I don't have chargebacks. They are holding 4066.15 from me and can't tell me where my money is. They are making interest off of my money and refuse to give me my money. I haven't had any chargebacks and continue to state, "It's to protect you from chargebacks." Lily, says, "I know you don't have any chargebacks, but it's for your safety." No, it's not. They are scamming people and making money off of this so called scam. STAY AWAY FROM SQUARE. I am a small business and 4066.15 that they are holding hurts. I took a deposit for a j, job was supposed to be done over the weekend, I met my client use the app and without notice they flagged him for fraud.     10 years + using Square as our credit card processor. This has been an entire disaster! *Lacks security measures (our account has been hacked 3 times with a loss of $10,000). *Horrible customer service. (Near impossible to get CS on the line. When you do get someone, they are in India with English not being their primary language.)

    July 29th 2024. I get an email from Square stating our email address on the account had been changed. I was provided a link to contest the change if we didn't request it. I clicked on the link to contest the email change. Never heard back from Square. Aug. 5th 2024. I could no longer sign into my account to run credit card transactions. I called Square and they tell me I do not have an account nor did I ever. I was hopping mad. "Interesting" I said, given that YOU emailed ME to tell me my email address had been changed AND I just transferred $5,000 from the account on July 1st. Square asked for a screen capture of the email they sent me. Which I did. Was told by Square that wasn't proof I had an account. Geeeezzzz!!!! They have not responded to my last few emails.     I set up an account with this company to take credit cards for my construction business. It took me about a month and I set up an account with this company to take credit cards for my construction business. It took me about a month and I took my first credit card payment. They took a $15,000 payment from one of my customers and then sent me an email and said, "It’ll be 30 days from today until you get your money and you must do this. This is this before we can release it."

    If they would’ve told me these things upfront, I wouldn’t be so upset. But they made it hard for me and my client had to go back and cancel his payment through his credit card company days later and redo the payment in another method because of their so-called policies that they never ever disclosed upfront. I do not recommend Square for anybody, they are horrible. The customer service stinks. You call him with somebody answers. You can barely understand them and they can do nothing. Then you get a email after email that saying stuff is completely irrelevant To the situation. Do not use Square. They are scammers.

Their customer service doesn’t do anything to help a situation, I was getting paid via Square and the first payment they held it for a week, not too bad. I received a higher payment (bigger client) and they held it for 5 days. And never deposited the money. They made me issue a refund which prolongs the project by 2-7 more business days because they already took the money out of my client's account. If you’re in tech and you’re planning to replace companies like square let everyone here know!! If you’re looking for payment processing, run away from square.

    I would give them zero stars if I could. I was using Square for my new business, and my business took off. After 8 months of no chargebacks, but an increase in payments they put a reserve on my account holding 20 percent of each project I was completing. I had customers sign a satisfaction letter waiving the right to chargeback payment, and saying I completed our contract in full also providing their Identification. At first they were holding each transactions 20 percent for 60 days from date I received payment. They had so much money of mine they actually caused me issues with clients because I didn’t have money when I needed it to purchase materials. Who can afford to not have 20 percent of a job done?

    Then after verifying my account several times they deactivated my account, and right before my money was to be released they claim they are holding it for another 90 days. They also took money from my available funds without pre warning, and don’t show record of where it is or how much. They won’t provide any statement of where and what they are doing with my money. I also had a Square checking account and my daily transactions would change often. A payment I made would go from a processing payment to a paid payment for up to three weeks then be moved back to processing after being “paid” for 3 weeks.

    They would change my balance, and date transactions went through, and money would disappear. They would also take paid transactions and void them after several weeks of being paid. I personally believe they keep peoples money and make a profit on it, and hold it for as long as possible. They are crooks!!! Don’t use!!! Stripe is a better alternative

    Service is ok UNTIL you get a dispute! 4 months ago, I shipped a customer's item out within days of receiving the order. The customer received the item (tracking verified). Customer filed a claim with his credit card and SquareUp notified me. I immediately contact a Square representative and provided the order, the payment receipt, and the tracking information. They said that they would submit it it and get back to me. I was quite confident that I would prove my case, it was pretty open and shut.

    A week goes by and I follow up. They never sent in the information (Oh great). I resubmit the information and I get this indifferent fine print nonsense that they have up to 90 days to review, blah blah blah. I asked for more information (credit card issuing bank information) and what else would they do. They said, that they can and will only do something once the credit card company makes a decision. And no, they won't share the credit card bank issuer who took my money. So I had to wait 4 months. 4 months passed and this is the message I got.

    "We challenged this payment dispute on your behalf using the information you provided. The cardholder’s bank has reviewed this information and decided to resolve the case in the cardholder’s favor. Since these funds were previously held by the bank, no additional funds will be held from your account. Unfortunately, the bank does not give us rights to re-challenge a cardholder’s dispute after they make a final decision. If you’d like to pursue this further, you can consult with a lawyer to initiate a legal process with the cardholder." So yeah, I removed ALL my payment processing from Square (GoDaddy Payments sucks too) and now process credit card payments using a 3rd party Costco-Converge that will actually advocate for me with informed and pro-active representatives.

This has been the absolute worst experience of my life, they are holding a very large sum of money from me and my business with no resolution/way of retrieving it. I have been sent on the roundabout for days with customer service and have now even been blocked where I can’t even get through. If you care about keeping your money safe and do not want your money stolen from you, under no circumstances should you do any processing with Square Invoices.     We received this email from Square. "We’re sorry to inform you that Square can no longer support payments at your business due to policy reasons. Starting today, your account is deactivated." We called to find out what is going on. The support people said they were not allowed to tell us. We asked to speak to a manager to no avail. We replied to their notification email asking why they dropped us. No answer. Their action caused us difficulties.     I had a unprofessional customers service lady on the phone rude telling me that they didn't charge me twice when I was in the free trial period. I explained to her I was looking at my bank statement gave her the dates I was charged and she still was arguing me down telling me she didn't see the charge and basically called me a liar about the whole situation. I was on the with phone with her over an hour being patient for her not to resolve the issue and be rude. I don't understand how the company take people money and can't find the records but the bank statement doesn't give false information.

    I have been notified of several disputes. I am blocked from my account records. I cannot get through to a human using the number posted on this site. The Resolution Team emails do not include a contact number. There have not been any responses to reply emails. This entire experience with Square has been difficult and unprofessional. I was with the company for one month, and have had many difficulties. Now, I cannot get in touch with them as their system does not work, numbers are invalid, and no one responds.

    Morons, IT support is a joke. I paid for my domain and now they will not transfer it. It's on sale for $6000. They have blocked me and I can't change the IP address. Crooks!!! Stay away. I was going to use them for POS but I will ditch every service I have with them now. STUPID PEOPLE WORK HERE. VERY STUPID PEOPLE.

    We WERE clients with Square for years, processed $1,000,000+ in sales and when we tried our first ACH sale with them they didn't transfer the money when they said they would, asked for tons of information and questions and basically held our and the client's $$$ hostage. Nothing had changed with our business situation and they already had the money from the client so it wasn't to prevent fraud as they already had his money...How could it be fraudulent? Canceling our account with Square as soon as this nightmare comes to an end and will share this with all of our peers.

    AVOID THIS COMPANY. I am a fairly new business in the commercial equipment market. I signed up to transact credit card business with SQUARE in April. After only 4 invoices totally less than $5000, I received a long set of questions that needed to be responded while my account was disabled. They required a government issued ID, a selfie photograph, several months of my company's bank transactions and detailed questions about the nature of my legitimate business. These questions were replied truthfully. There was nothing out of the ordinary about my business.

    Within a week, they deactivated my account and told me that the moneys that were paid by my customers would be held for 90-days. They gave me no reason why they cancelled my account. There were zero chargebacks, zero issues. I called their offshore customer service who would tell me nothing except that the explanation would be in a letter. The letter explained nothing except that too many chargebacks would result in account deactivation. I HAD NO CHARGEBACKS. They told me that the decision was final and that there was no appeal process.

    I have moved my business for the time being to PayPal and will evaluate other services. But one thing that I will not do is to endorse SQUARE which is a HORRIBLE company to deal with and they have wrecked my cash flow for the next 3 months for NO REASON. If you are a small business like me, you would be well advised to AVOID SQUARE!

    About the chargeback (Dispute Case) - We got 2 disputes from the customers and they didn't even help. 1. Customer purchased the item from our store - worth $500 - and at that time we put manual card number and after that they opened the dispute said they never made this payment. We have the receipt with their signature and the information of the item. Square said that because we put the manual card number so they cannot challenge the dispute - It's ok, we accepted it and lost $500.

    2. After that, we follow their policies about the dispute as they sure they can protect us from chargeback. We served the service for customer as repaired their broken screen of iPhone (we let customer tapped their card when they made payment, checked their ID, had the warranty policies in the receipt, and collected their signature..). After that customer opened the dispute because he broke the screen and want free replacement. It is out of warranty policy. We submitted all the evidence to Square and we still lost the case (they said it depends on the bank). What the hell is that? Very frustrated with them. If you open small business, don't choose Square. You never got protect from scammer even you did it right as Square's policies.

    I simply moved money from my personal account to my Square account and it was held for fraud. And customer service is nothing about it and told me that I had to go through the dashboard and wait 3 to 7 business days, very unhappy with the service. They make it very difficult to do transactions in and help you in any way. Poor service.

    Absolute WORST company ever! They are complete thieves and crooks taking and holding small business owners' funds claiming additional information is needed to justify a hold. When you try to contact customer service to see what is necessary they play games and never give a straight answer. Zero help or support.

    Square customer service support is the worst I’ve encountered; expect to be transferred multiple times to different departments and to hear the reps repeatedly read from scripts that say they understand you. And expect promises but no resolution nor follow up. They had multiple system outages and issues during the week leading up to Mother’s Day that prevented customers from ordering online. And neither announcement nor support during that time. Square introduced system changes with incorrect data mapping on their reports, reported by users, and months later still not fixed with no fix date. Data error is being considered a feature by their product support team. I was offered no fees on $1000 of sales for my troubles, the equivalent of about $30. Insulting to say the least. I plan to change platforms.

    Probably one of the worst PoS system when it comes to selling high-volume items. I do not recommend Square for anything that is high volume retail such as a Convenience Store. Let me lay out the scenario.

    Owner of Square A customer goes to you with 10 items.

    What does Square make you do? Click on search library (on your screen). Scan the barcode, it searches your library for the item that is associated with the barcode. You click on the screen to add item to customer cart. Now, you cancel the search bar. Click on the search bar again. Scan the barcode of the second item. Click on the screen to add the item to the customer’s cart. Clear the search menu, click search again and scan the third item. You do this 10 times, for 10 items which takes approximately 2 mins and all the customers behind them are extremely frustrated as they wait.

    Any other PoS including PoS that was made in the 1990s.

    A customer goes to you with 10 items. You can the first item, it automatically adds the item to the customer's cart. You proceed to scan the 2, 3rd, 4th …. 10th item, and you're done in 3 seconds.

    This simple feature has been requested for 2+ years now and they still can't figure it out while other companies in the 90s done it in a day. If you are a retailer that sells a lot of things, Square is so bad and will add huge lag.

    I run a website using Woocommerce and I have been accepting Square for years now. Several months ago, I received a notification that I can now accept Cash App Pay (Square) by just enabling the option. I wanted to give my customers more options so of course I enabled. Three months later and $5000 worth of transactions through Cash App Pay, I am told that those transactions were ALL VOIDED. I only found out as one of my customers reached out to me saying she checked her Cash App and the transaction was cancelled. When I called Square and waited on hold for at least 30 minutes, I was told that the only thing they can do is tell me to contact each one of my customers and retake the payment manually.

    This is why I am saying Square and Cash App is fraud:
    • Cash App never notified me that these transactions were voided (if an order comes in through Square and it is not successful, the Woocommerce plugin lets me know that the order failed).

    • The monies never entered my Square dashboard.

    These guys should be run out of business for scamming small time businesses like myself. My only hope is that a much larger business with a bigger legal team experiences this same issue and then sues the daylights of those idiots at Cash App and Square. AVOID!

    If you're a larger business with larger… If you're a larger business with larger transactions stay away from Square. They will hold your funds hostage while they do nothing for days on end with pretend investigations. We had a customer who made a large purchase. Amex even called square to verify the transaction was legitimate and they still refuse to release our funds. Their customer service is non existent. There is no escalation process they say there is but there really isn’t. It’s the same group of people at a call centre who have no authority to do anything. It seems square would just rather us choose another company who has the capacity to deal with larger businesses rather than to make our business a priority.
