At the beginning (May 2021) everything was working fine but when we decided to cancel their payroll service we have had the worst experience with this Paychex company. Since May 4, 2022 we have tried to cancel the services and no one after more than a year has been able or wanted to fix this situation. They continue to charge us for service without having another contract with them. We do not recommend it.

We had a great experience with the sales team Paychex and so we switched over to them as not only our payroll provider but our PEO in Q4 '2021. Since then, it's been nothing but headaches. This was our first experience with a PEO, and despite receiving every assurance that they would make the transition seamless, I find myself still to this day dealing with the fallout from the way they mishandled the paperwork with the states in which we do business. Avoid the headache for yourselves and find another PEO to work with as this is not a company that cares about its small business clients.

I'm really just trying to see my paystubs and I have to get a new account access from my employer every time I have to get paystubs. It's insane how locked out of my own data I am just because I got employed with a business' that thinks this is ok for a service to be like this. This is more friction than calling the IRS for anything. Just email stubs. It's not rocket science.

Read the reviews and you see a consistent method of operation. It is CLEAR that you’re not the only one who’ve experienced the Paychex culture of being DECEPTIVE, IRRESPONSIBLE, UNPROFESSIONAL, FRAUDULENT, MANIPULATIVE in their practices. They prey on small businesses because they don’t have the resources and means to fight back and count on bigger companies to overlook the mistakes because they can afford to. The pattern is get you signed up then employees and their supervisors and managers will IGNORE, AVOID & LIE. Employees will get a commission if they sign companies up for their services such as HR, 401K, ERTC, etc. Then there’s no support or follow through.
Writing reviews to just complain won’t cause changes. TAKE THE TIME AND CONTACT YOUR STATES ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE, file a complaint to FTC & BBB. Contact your LOCAL ELECTED OFFICIAL, as there is a movement to investigate PSP (Payroll Services Providers) practices of FRAUDULENT and malpractices. What makes Elected officials work for you is if they have an issue they can work on that will make a difference (or keep them in office or re-elected).
Payroll companies like Paychex have many skeletons and dead bodies buried. This is an organized crime that needs regulation attention. Use these offices and governing bodies to hold Paychex accountable and fight for you because a review here alone won’t bring you Justice - Paychex will continue to hurt people and businesses until they are forced not to with CLASS ACTION lawsuits and INVESTIGATIONS by Congressional Oversight Committees. Take ACTION - don’t just complain. Provide specific employees, documents and details of Paychex for investigations.

When I researched using them, I didn't think to check reviews. But initially I read cost as $90/month. After speaking with somebody at company, they stated since I'm processing weekly it would be $28/week. I added on work comp through a Paychex affiliate. And then Paychex bumped up my invoice to $31 weekly. Even though the payments are to another company, since Paychex processes it, there is additional weekly charge. I was then contacted by sales rep to add 401k. And that would be another $50/month, and of course an additional weekly charge.
Mind you, this is all automated processing with a push of button software. That they're charging monthly/weekly fees for. You still have to go in to a hard to navigate app and process everything yourself. And then of course look at all the reports and double check them. Because they do the percents wrong with paying the taxes. The first quarter, Paychex didn't even pay anything to state. Then when I received letter from secretary's office, after inquiring about my quarterly filing. Paychex finally started doing the state payments. I was supposed to be paying 2.7% to the state, but Paychex was only taking out 1.8%.
So now I owe the state, plus penalty. Every week I had to make a call to Paychex for some kind of mistake. And it would take multiple calls through a few weeks time to correct their mistakes. I was owed $181 credit from Paychex. But they kept processing invoice payments out my account for 5 weeks until finally I went to another payroll company. I would have to call Paychex after every payroll process letting them know, hey you charged me again this week, when I'm supposed to have a credit. They stated they see a credit is due, but hasn't been approved yet. It takes more than a month for approval to correct your mistake?
Every time you call, you get someone with bad attitude. Because they're so inundated with others who've they made mistakes with. Nobody ever accepts any responsibility. And they always say same thing: "I don't know why they did that." Like they're talking about another company. It's Your company and Your problem. So how are you going to fix? I called to cancel services. They hung up and didn't even put my cancel request through. I called again and they have no answer to the over $150 I am owed. Stating they don't know if I'll get refunded, since I'm no longer using Paychex. They can't credit any invoices. How about just putting the money back in the account you so easily withdrew from?
They also have not returned the tax money they took out of check payments since start of new quarter. And they haven't sent that money to the Feds. I don't know how this company is in existence without any fraud charges. They borderline do business that should have people jailed. I have to call Attorney General's office Monday to get my money back. And next I'm filing report with Better Business Bureau. And seeing if there's some kind of arbitration court.

Made a phone call to this company and the receptionist that answered the call was unbelievably rude! I tried explaining my situation to her so I could be transferred to the right department. She constantly interrupted me, spoke rudely to me, and ended up hanging up on me. I tried calling back again simply to see if I could speak to a manager or supervisor on duty to report what had just happened and to also have my initial problem resolved. Yet again, the same woman answered, she continued to speak to me rudely, told me that I didn’t need to speak to anyone there, and hung up a second time. Worst customer service I have ever dealt with! That woman needs to be fired or quit if she hates people this much.

This company will LIE, AND MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT to ruin your business. We have the cancellation notice, names, and emails as proof. I was an employer of a single employee. I closed my Paychex account mid-year because I stopped using the employee. Now, I cannot get Paychex to generate a W-2 that the employee needed for her taxes, even though I am willing to pay whatever additional fees are required. I was bounced from one person to the next for weeks, all of them saying, oh you'll have to call this general number; only to be told when I called that I needed to go back to the first person. TERRIBLE CLIENT SERVICE. No one at Paychex tries to actually fulfill a very simple request for a payroll company -- CAN'T EVEN GENERATE A W-2??

Updated to 2 stars, as the issue was finally resolved and my money refunded. However, it should not take a review on Consumer Affairs, a threat of reporting to the BBB and the State Attorney General to get resolution to a problem. Still would not recommend.
Original Review: March 10, 2023
Last year I changed to Paychex from another payroll company because their pricing was much better. I process one payroll per month for one employee. Well, you get what you pay for. They assured me their system was easy to use and there would be no monthly fee if no payroll was processed. I was not able to see a complete demo of payroll processing until after I signed on, or I would have never used them. I was shown a very watered down version of how it works, which is nothing like how it actually works. Using their system to process payroll was a nightmare. I am very tech savvy and it would still take me 20-30 minutes to process a payroll. Something that took less than 5 with the other company. Finding necessary reports is like looking for cheese in a maze. The entire platform is not user friendly at all. After 3 months, I decided to go back to the other company.
I emailed my sales rep 12/2022 and explained I wanted to stop my payroll and asked what the process was to do this. I never received a response. Due to the holidays and several deaths in my family, I did not have time to follow up. No biggie, since I was not going to charged if I didn't process a payroll. Forward to 03/01/2023 and I get around to reviewing things. I've been charged every month. Numerous emails and phone calls to different reps/associates for nearly 2 weeks all went ignored. After a threat to file complaints to the BBB and my bank, I finally received an email link to complete what was essentially an exit survey in order to cancel, which I completed. I have still yet to receive a response regarding the money I was charged, every person I ask completely ignores the question. I have reviewed my contract again and it only states "monthly" fee.
I questioned this with the sales rep before I signed on and was assured that no fee would be charged for months I did not process a payroll, as I would not have a payroll every month. I assume at this point that I was flat out lied to and this is why the same sales rep, nor any of the other 4-5 people I have attempted to get an answer from will respond to me. I would never recommend PayChex to anyone.

Working with this company hands down has been the most horrible customer service experience and exercise in futility that I have ever experienced. After I fired them from doing my payroll because of incompetence, their inability to return calls (because my rep was "really busy") and rectify problems that their people and systems created, I was still contractually stuck with having to use them to oversee my 401k. This has been a huge debacle as well. They erroneously were withdrawing funds from my account for over 2 years. When I originally questioned it, they gave me the runaround as to being expense related. When I was able to dive into it more deeply, it turns out that they were making a huge error on their end and we're duplicating withdrawals each paycheck.
Getting them to reimburse me the money (thousands of dollars) was a nightmare. They then screwed that up and have essentially ghosted me when I've tried to get them to correct this new blunder. They continue to fail to return my phone calls or follow up with my email requests to provide me an accounting of what happened, why it happened, when they are going to further correct the errors, and what they will do to make me whole. I have dealt with what appears to be one incompetent individual after another and I'm at the point where I'm going to have no choice but to report them to the Federal Trade Commission and potentially initiate legal action if I can't compel them to have the necessary conversations with me. I can't emphasize enough how abysmal their treatment of me is/was, and under no circumstance would I ever recommend their services. Their behavior has been totally shameful.

We were with Paychex for many years. We have a small company (8-10 employees), and the admin fees were about $1400 each pay period. Ridiculously expensive, but we did know the cost going in, so that's on us. When they increased our health insurance premiums by over 50% in October 2022, we could not afford to stay with them. I did some research and found a great company that we now use at a cost of a mere $90 admin fee per pay period - BIG difference from the $1400 we were paying.
My other issue with Paychex, is that since we left, I can not get records. I verified before we left that they would send our W2s and I could get 3rd quarter tax statements, since we paid them for their services through Sept. They told us they mailed our W2s; however, our employees have not received theirs as of this date (3/8). I also have been trying since December (3 months) to get 3rd quarter tax reports and still cannot get them to respond. There are much better options out there, so I recommend doing your research before signing on the Paychex. We've wasted a lot of time and money dealing with them.

*Update 4/10/2023: After posting this public review, Paychex has reached out and we have found common ground. Because of this, I have increased my review rating of the company. We will also continue to use them as our health insurance broker through this upcoming year hoping we have a better experience upon renewal.
Original Review: March 1, 2023
We currently use Paychex for our small business including payroll, retirement services, and also health insurance. This review is specifically for their health insurance department, which is completely unprofessional, unresponsive, and overall a complete and utter waste of time. We had a new employee join our company in December. She asked for a health plan which our company currently did not offer, but we could easily add this plan before our renewal date on Jan 1st. I reached out to our broker Montoya, who I'm convinced has absolutely no idea how to do her job. I asked what are the steps to renew health benefits for our existing employees and how can we add this additional plan for our new employee. I either got no response or if I did get a response days/weeks later after reaching out over and over, it was as though she didn't fully understand how to help us.
Long story short, when she finally was able to move forward with our insurance carrier to add the new plan, the carrier said it was too late as this took place after our renewal date. This absolutely gets my blood boiling. We asked Paychex with PLENTY of time in early December to make these changes before the Jan 1st deadline. However, the broker completely dropped the ball.
When I've called the general Paychex health insurance phone line, I'm met with more people are are clearly miserable in their jobs. When I've finally been able to reach the manager Sean, he was helpful in the sense that he wanted to understand what was going on. I forwarded him all email correspondence to justify that I had asked for these changes in early December, again well before our renewal date. That's where his helpfulness stopped. It's now been almost 3 weeks with zero response from him. No email, no phone calls, no updates. I've since followed up several times via email and phone with no response whatsoever to provide me with an update. Do yourself a favor and don't rely on a payroll company for health insurance benefits. This department is an absolute waste of time. We are moving our business elsewhere, and I hope this review will save other businesses from the frustrating experience that I had.
We are sorry to hear about the experience you have had with Paychex. If you are open to it, please email reviews@paychex.com with your Company Name/ID, your name, and the best way to contact you so we can have leadership reach out to you directly. Thank you.

This is the worst payroll company! We have been trying now for over 2 years to get our ERTC credits processed! We were lied to by Paychex and given tracking numbers over 5 months ago saying that the credits were processed for 2 of our companies, they provided tracking numbers but said they could not be tracked since it had been 120 days. 5 months later after weeks of emails following up on where our money was I finally call the IRS and find out 1 of our companies has NOT been filed at all and the other one only the Q3/4 not Q2 of 2020! Nothing but excuses and blaming others for this not getting done. Now they are requesting the same information that we have uploaded to them multiple times over a year ago.
I am concerned that my businesses' company information is compromised and not secure. This is beyond incompetence and I am considering contacting an attorney to see what my options are! We uploaded our documents to onedrive files that they provided last May but now we need to give them our 941s again? I have 3 businesses with paychex and if it was not so time consuming to change payroll companies I would have been gone a year ago, if this is not resolved asap I will be pulling all of my accounts from Paychex!! Shortly after the review, a representative from the Paychex client office was able to get someone to help us quickly, and we were assigned a new payroll specialist afterward. We are happy that it was resolved.
Original Review: Dec. 20, 2022
Been their customer for over 8 years, and thinking about switching it every year. It is painful to switch payroll company, as we have over 75 employees. This year is the worst, when we are assigned with a terrible payroll specialist. Put in a request to do a one time payroll deduction a week ago, to my specialist. Follow up with multiple emails, phone calls, and there was no reply via phone or email. Called in several times to ask other payroll specialist to help, but they said they could not help me, due to the large amount of fund involved, so the request had to go back to my assigned specialist.
Contacted her supervisor Jude **, and he promised me that my specialist would call me back, and that was a few days ago. A week went by, and my request, marked as urgent, has not been processed. Left another email message and a phone message to my specialist, as well as a phone message to her supervisor today. I suspect it would be another 3-4 days before it can be resolved, may be longer. I think this is the final straw for staying with this company. For those who are on the fence, try to look somewhere else. Paychex has good product, but horrible process for escalation and there are too many untrained payroll specialist that just don't care. And if you are assigned to one of them, your payroll life is miserable.

As a church, we were a client for over 10 years. Needless to say, they provided excellent service or we would not have been with them that long. During February of this year, there was a problem discovered with our pastor's W2. After contacting our representative about the problem (which was their fault), it took well over six months to have the entire situation resolved. Instead of simply correcting the problem, matters were made considerably worse. A number of employees from all levels of the company were involved in this fiasco.
There were months that no one at all was working on the problems. Very unprofessional, awful customer service, no integrity or accountability, etc. This is a very lengthy issue but to summarize, if you are considering this company, they are fine unless there are problems. Ten plus years of good service was totally erased when it took about seven months to resolve a large number of issues caused by their ignorance. It would take pages and pages to detail all of the problems PayChex caused for our church and our pastor.
Our pastor was extremely delayed in filing his taxes, our state taxes were messed up (to the point of receiving notices, which has never occurred before), and PayChex kept taking money out of our bank account multiple times, even after we were no longer using them for payroll. I had to mention legal action and contact the president & CEO before certain actions were taken but I really wasn't impressed with upper management either. We as a church HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT using PayChex for any services, especially if you are a religious entity or church. We discovered after changing companies that PayChex had not handled our pastor's taxes correctly for the entire time we used them. And let me say this again, we had used their services for over ten years and the treatment we received was horrific.

Left my company and wanted to roll over my Paychex 401K into new employer retirement services 403B plan. I filled out the Paychex paperwork that was listed as **** (new investment program) For Benefit of (me) and remainder of small ROTH account paid directly to me. All on-line and submitted. Received several follow up emails about status, and one that confirmed my checks were cut and mailed. I received another email within 1 hour stating something was wrong, and no checks were cut. When I tried to call, Paychex phone system will not allow you to talk to anyone in person because I had left the company and only way to communicate was through their “chat feature” on their website.
I requested a supervisor through the chat feature, and they said one would be “monitoring” our chat, but this was the only way to proceed. It appears now that their website was wrong, and they cannot make two different distributions that way and I now must fill out another form and send it back in via regular mail. I DO RECOMMEND anyone use Paychex and consider this a reason to now NOT take a position with a company that does use them.

The church I work as an administrator for used Paychex for 9 years to run its payroll. We realized that as a small employer we would cut our payroll costs in half by using a small local company that provided better customer service. Paychex gave us a discount but I had to call every 3 months or so to ask them to keep giving it to us. When I cancelled I emailed my support specialist and told her to close the account. She did not and I kept getting reminders to submit payroll over the next two months. I continued to email and she responded that she was sorry it was taking so long and would look into it.
After two months I received an email saying that Paychex was going to charge me $58 for not using the service for the past 2 months. I immediately called and the customer service agent looked into it and said he saw record that I had asked to cancel two months earlier but that my payroll specialist had done nothing to cancel the account. He said he would try to cancel the upcoming payment. However it went thru 2 days later. Now I cannot get anyone on the phone so I am contacting my bank to see if I can block them taking anymore money from the church. Really disappointing and I would suggest looking for a cheaper local option to do payroll.

We have been using Oasis/Paychex for Payroll HR and benefit services for a 1 and a half. It is impossible to do anything with this company. The HR person James L. does not do anything right and we have to constantly follow up and asking him to change things for us. Our issues are not resolved and more and more issues are created. We spoke to his supervisor Charles and complained about James then asked together a different rep but that was not done and we are stuck with James who can not get anything right. We called Customer Service and tried to get help but we just get passed on to a different person or they hang up the phone. Than happened a few times and every customer service rep will tell you a different solution and at the end they will say that we need to speak with James. It is a never ending nightmare. DO NOT GO with Paychex. However they do charge you and do take your fees but nothing will ever get resolved.

After 2 years of being a customer of Paychex they are not willing to correct tax returns that they filed for us without charging us a fee. They did give us a second option that asks that we pay additional money to them so that they will calculate, amend and file the corrected returns. I pointed out to them that the paychex website states that Paychex will "calculate, file, and pay accurately and effortlessly". I also found two more places on your website that state the same thing and more. In one spot on the website it states: "Optional Services at No Additional Charge-Tax Credit Services Get Help Finding and applying for tax credits for which your business may qualify to maximize your tax savings".
We have been paying for these services for the past 2 years. Paychex has never reached out to us about the ERTC (Tax Credit) and instead filed the returns without calculating the tax credit. This is now something that we have found and contacted Paychex for help in getting the tax credits that we qualify for. Paychex is now refusing to calculate and file our corrected tax returns so that we can get the credits; unless we pay a fee to file or the second option we pay even more money for them to do the same service your website says are included at "No Additional Charge". Paychex has been calculating and filing our payroll tax returns for the past 2 years. We only asked that they correct the returns that they filed so that we can get the tax credits we paid them to find for us. (Granted Paychex did not help us find these.)

I have been a client of Paychex for many years. We started out with 4 employees and over the years had to let them go until it was just myself left. When we started, we were directed to pick a package that covered all the employees with several options such as Worker's Comp, Data Export, Garnish Services, and others. After the last employee was let go, there was no need for such a package and my company ended paying for package that no longer fit my company's needs. I mentioned the charges to my accountant who had referred me to this company and she stated that should not be paying so much for a single payee.
I recently looked into the excess charges and found that I had paid out over $10,000 in fees that were not applicable to my company. When I called the Customer Service rep, Dayle, she stated that she didn't know why my payroll specialist never mentioned this to me and placed me on a different package. Dayle stated that I could be on a package that was $26/week, instead of the $110/week I was paying. A 2nd call with a another representative from the company elicited the same confused response by the rep, as she also wondered why the payroll specialist never mentioned this to me. Paychex recorded the call, as did I for anyone who needs proof.
A 3rd call with another only wanted to get me to accept a less expensive package, but this one was $46/week. What happened to the $26/week that Dayle mentioned? The 3rd rep mentioned that they could look at going back 3 months to see what they might do about a refund, but I'm looking at what they would do about the last 3 1/2 years of overpayment for services I did not need and never used. I also want to mention that a Paychex sales rep came to my office couple of years ago to make sure that I was receiving the best services for my company. He was only there to upsell me on more services, as he did not understand why the company had sent him out to meet with me when I was the only employee. Obviously, he wasn't there to make sure I was receiving the services appraise for my company.

After years with Paychex, we cancelled to go with another PEO. The only good service we were provided was through our designated payroll person. Everything else -- 401k, HR questions, FSA, workers comp, customer service requests -- I would rate a 0.25. Emails were not responded to. Multi-state workers comp details never set up correctly, no follow up, though their rates were quite high.
Changing to another PEO is always challenging but I can say that Paychex went out of their way to make the change-over as difficult as they could. They sent incorrect, out-of-date reports to the new PEO. They turned off our logins before the set date and records were just lost. Emailing for help the response I received was, "I had forwarded the information on your behalf. That’s all I’m able to do. No one has reached out to you yet? Thank you." If you're thinking of a PEO, there are many providers out there with better user experience. Their dashboard is a taped-together jumbled mess. Not a good experience. Paychex has been around a long time so perhaps customer service is not high on their list.

I was getting ready to enroll into a new 401k with paychex under a different employer ID and wanted to roll the previous funds over. I contacted Paychex and they stated it was my previous employer's fault for not contacting me.
Why did Paychex never contact me?? Why did I get statements up until the date they started taking my funds?? They never once sent me any statements showing any fees that were being charged to my account. How can they charge me fees but never send me any updated statements?!?! I tried resolving this with them several times but all they want to do is blame the employer. I showed them post on their website, their policy paperwork, and from ERISA showing they should have contacted me and they still refuse to do anything. This is unethical!

I was recently laid off from an organization that had been utilizing Paychex for their 401k plan. After considering options, I decided to take a disbursement to cover some recent medical bills that have piled up on my end and was literally sent a message stating that the funds would be distributed to my bank via ACH within 7 business days and in turn made payment arrangements and auto-drafts based off of this information (even allowing an extra 3 calendar days for some wiggle room).
Upon signing into to check the status on the eve of the 7th day, I received a status that "estimates" I will have my funds NEXT WEEK which is a full week past the original quoted date and is going to have the arrangements made blowing up in my face and costing me hundred of dollars of fees. Tried reaching via chat and was told that 7 days was an "estimate" (the word "estimate" NEVER appeared on the confirmation) and had 3 different reps give me the runaround and trying to "lingo" me into their way of thinking.
I have worked in finance and compliance for over 20yrs and after informing them that an estimate needs to be disclosed as such, kept getting told there was nothing they could/would do. I repeatedly (like literally over a dozen times) asked to have a supervisor reach out to me and was denied and then conveniently would have the chat session "terminate for inactivity". Only silver lining to the absolute waste of several hours today is the transcript from the chat session will be very useful when I file complaints with the appropriate regulatory agencies and pursue civil damages against this joke of a company.

The black out period was over three weeks, apparently because they claimed they had to map old funds from old plan to theirs, however this should have been done in advance of the cutover and should be done programmatically. Then, sadly our company shut down a week later. Now, they are charging me $75 to roll over my 401K to my IRA (!!). The fees for their own IRA are much higher than my financial institution. So I feel like I am being gouged for the hot minute they held my account.

They claimed they didn't even receive one of my forms until I pushed them to look again and they suddenly found it. They will tell you every new form will take 10 business days to process but not even bother to start the process until you push them to. They sent one form to the wrong email and it took five days to be corrected. They finally released my money after 3.5 weeks of going back and forth but of course I won't receive it for, you guessed it, 10 business days. I had my own business 20 years ago and used Paychex for our payroll services. Twenty years ago, the company had competent representatives and delivered dependably reliable service. NOT ANY MORE!!!! Do not waste your time, money, and energy retaining Paychex services! In the past 11 months (since starting another new business and hiring Paychex for payroll services) they have consistently disappointed at E-V-E-R-Y level E-V-E-R-Y single month! Eleven out of eleven payrolls that their "specialists" have "completed" have been WRONG... & not just small inaccuracies. In fact, one month they actually PAID a payee who hadn't been on payroll in MONTHS! I have also been assigned a new "payroll specialist" EVERY SINGLE month! Hence, all of the empty promises made each month with empty assurances that things will get better are forgotten with each employee who is turned over.
Dollar amounts have been wrong, payees have been wrong, one payee actually received NO PAY for 3 months, and then Paychex asked ME to pay her! Fees were charged without notice or approval, fees were raised without notice, direct deposit accounts were improperly set up (or not set up at all), follow-up was nearly non-existent, and competence (on every level) was MIA. Final straw... last Friday "Client Retention Specialist", Stacey, assured me she'd resolve and follow-up with resolution by early the following week. Stacey was a "no call", "no email", "no follow up" for an entire WEEK before I had to reach back out to HER -- and she is the "Client Retention Specialist".
I have spent so much wasted time, energy, and resources attempting to get the service I was promised. As a new business owner, I reached out to Paychex to make my business life easier. If you are looking for the same, LOOK ELSEWHERE, and please...alert your friends, colleagues, and fellow business owners to do the same. Paychex has morphed into an unreliable, incompetent, uncaring, costly, and unconcerned company that everyone would fair much better to never engage.

There is no follow up or responsibility taken to make sure everything is in place to run your payroll. It is the absolute worst feeling when your employees call you at 6am because they didn't get paid. Then you spend hours on the phone to get a hold of someone to let them know your payroll did not get processed.
Nice internal notification system- wait for the client to notify you that your systems didn't work. Getting my payroll specialist to even respond 2 years ago before the pandemic was horrible so we decided to start entering payroll ourselves instead of the phone calls. We were given a new payroll specialist recently and I have yet to talk to her. I email with read receipts and get that but never a response. She has never called me back. I even had someone last year that made an appointment to review our accounts and he no showed. You call and ask to speak to just anyone and you will wait 30+ minutes and they usually can't help because you have to speak to your specialist. Paychex is not the company it once was and customer service is a thing of the past.

We used to be a ten year PayChex customer. November, 2020 personnel changes were made that completely created such payroll chaos one employee left due to it. Coupled with that, we were advised to complete certain State agreements where we had employees. This proved to be unnecessary and costly leading ongoing conflicts. When requesting assistance from PayChex, we only received a "not our problem" basically. We terminated our arrangement, chose another provider and remain pleased in this new payroll company's services. I'll never darken PayChex's halls again.

First of all I have used Paychex as my payroll provider since 2017. I had relatively no issues up to 2021. The employee who was the Paychex payroll mgr assigned to my business quit. Then Paychex eventually assigned me a new Payroll mgr. That's when the problems started. Now I have no help at all. I asked for a payroll to be completed in December before year end 2021. (As you know there is yearend tax planning involved). Paychex removed the payroll taxes necessary not once, but twice. They then made the payroll payment to the employee account, but then removed it and credited it back to the business account. So no payroll was made to the employee prior to year end. But twice the amount of the taxes were removed from the business account.
I have tried for 3 weeks to get someone at Paychex to help fix the situation, the supervisor to my payroll mgr Ali ** said in an email that her employee would fix it. Never happened. I have emailed and left voice messages to several mgrs of Paychex about the problem. No one answers or cares apparently. As of this date Paychex never paid the original employee payroll and has not refunded the taxes they removed from the business account. Then today without any notice from Paychex they removed money from the business account and paid the employee. But the amount is Tens of Thousands of Dollars different than the amount of the original payroll requested.
How bad is that for a payroll company to first be so incompetent to mess up a simple payroll and then not try to fix it expediently then to initiate a different payroll that was never requested. Is that criminal to remove money from a bank account when not requested? I have asked repeatedly for someone to call me but no one calls. What should I do? Paychex just seems to ignore the issues. And to rub salt in the wound Paychex charged my company $374 dollars for their work. Now I have no idea what the W2 for 2021 will look like and what tax issues it may cause. RLM

No response all day. Now the market is closed and it's too late to reallocate. Actively looking to replace Paychex with another service.

We started with Paychex Flex in April 2020 when our non-profit organization grew too large to use paper time cards and manually process payroll. We were promised great things and had very high hopes. There were CONSTANT issues. We had to contact customer service nearly every day. There is a different department for every little part of the system – one for payroll, one for time and attendance, one for this, one for that – and they all have extremely high turnover. I wish I kept track of how many account managers we had! Nothing was user-friendly – we never even could manage to obtain a basic employee list. Payroll took hours and often had to be done on weekends in order to get employees paid on time.
In August 2021, after once again being sold on empty promises, we transitioned our account to a PEO. We needed some help with our benefits and were promised lower rates and better coverage through their group health insurance plans. The transition to the PEO account was a nightmare, we had to download and manually upload thousands of documents because they can’t transfer it themselves and our employees were extremely frustrated throughout the transition. Again, we were shuffled around between a million account managers who never seemed to have the answers to our questions and loved to pass us on to the next one.
We were promised a flat rate, but repeatedly received separate bills for every little thing and given every excuse as to why. We paid thousands of dollars per month, only to find out in November, as our plans were coming up for renewal, that we were supposedly not eligible for the group health insurance through the PEO. What were we paying for?
Needless to say, we terminated our contract. We were supposed to have access to everything in our account for 30 days post-termination, but all of our access was taken away immediately. Employees have no access to their pay stubs, we can’t see approved time off requests, etc. We can log in but there is NOTHING there. We basically lost two years of employee information. We’ve spent hours on hold with customer service only to be hung up on MULTIPLE times after nicely explaining our issue and have gotten nowhere.
On countless calls, Paychex employees loved to brag about how they were named one of the “World’s Most Ethical Company”, but the way they handled a non-profit’s business certainly says otherwise. I could go on forever with specific incidents and documentation to back up our stories, but it would not get us anywhere. In the end, if you care about your business or your employees, DO NOT consider using a single service from Paychex.

One day I get an email, he is no longer my payroll specialist. Then starts the revolving door of new payroll specialist. Some having more talent than others. Yesterday, I had to call them for a mistake in two of the payroll checks, and to ask where my payroll journals are. FORTY-THREE minutes on hold, why because my payroll specialist is out of the office, and she was out of the office the prior week, and I had to wait on hold then too. I am seriously considering dropping them after this year, and I have a feeling after reading a lot of these reviews that I am not alone. Oh, even the receptionist doesn't answer the phone.

As of right now, I am on Day 9 I discovered a payroll processing problem that has not been resolved. I am dealing with 2 levels of support: Payroll Specialist & Client Services Supervisor. Response time on calls or emails is slow or non-existent. My Payroll Specialist's voice mailbox is full.
I've even reached out to my CPA's Paychex representative to see if there is another route to get support. Here I get call backs but we've been unable to be available at the same time for 2 days. It has been 5 days since a solution was proposed by my Payroll Specialist, but then nothing happened, and my corporate bank accounts are in limbo.
It has been 2 days since I've requested answers to these 3 basic questions (and all I have had in response is silence):• Is corrective action is actually underway?
• By what date will monies be reversed?
• Have any incorrect tax fillings already occurred?

Nowhere during the process was I alerted that Paychex would charge such an outrageous fee for something that other companies (such as Fidelity) does for FREE. I chose to move my 401k elsewhere rather than keep it at Paychex because 1) I no longer am employed at my previous company and 2) Paychex's miscellaneous management fees were way too high as is. I am so upset. As an employee I beg business owners to consider using someone else for their payroll and benefits.

That got their attention. In addition, I had 2 employees (2 hours a week) who were auto-enrolled in retirement services that they didn't want and that has cost me more. Spent an average of 30 minutes on hold with each of many phone calls. Paychex workers on the back end were nice enough but all they could offer is "sorry". Paychex's awful customer service is one of the reasons we decided to leave them for ADP. Our ADP rep recently brought to our attention that our Form 5500's were never filed properly for the two years we were with Paychex. As any small business owner would know, this mistake carries hefty fees and fines along with it. I called to have copies of the forms sent over to me so ADP could accurately handle them only to be told they couldn't submit them to me even though my information is involved with the closed account and my business partner (who was dealing with serious family health issues) would have to call.
After the back and forth and being told she would only need to call in for a quick moment to have the forms sent over and that they could be sent to me (even though I couldn't just have them directly???), they had her on and off hold multiple times and felt the need to harass her with every bit of personal identifier information including information that is in no way relevant to the requests being made since the customer account number, business information and her basic information apparently wasn't enough to convince them who she was.
I originally asked the rep I was speaking to speak to a supervisor to explain the situation to avoid this to begin with, only to be put on hold for over ten minutes and then be told the same information by the same person and that a supervisor wasn't willing to speak to me. My partner ended up being on the line for 22 minutes for a call which I was specifically told would take less than two. TO LITERALLY EMAIL COPIES OF FORMS. I then waited over an additional hour for the forms to be emailed over. Individuals we dealt with: Abby (no last name provided), David (no last name provided, and Karen ** in addition to whatever supervisors told Abby they wouldn't speak with me. So glad we're not with this company anymore, they genuinely suck.

A Negative 5 star rating should be added so users could properly rate Paychex. I've never written a review before, but since Paychex is the worst vendor relationship I've experienced in my 24 years of being in business, I figured it was time to start. My negative experiences with Paychex over the last 4 months have been too numerous to document in 200 characters, so I will just list a few of the highlights. I purchased an existing business that was using Paychex for payroll and Paychex was contacted 30 days prior to the purchase and was informed that I was retaining all of the company's employees and wanted to continue with exactly the same settings as the company I was buying.
More than 3 months after buying the company and after countless calls with some being over 4 hours long, they still had not corrected the issues & problems. It started at the very beginning when I told the salesperson I was assigned that I wanted the same pay periods as the prior company and she suggested I change them as they would "help her numbers for the month". I told her no and she went ahead and set up a 3 way call with someone else from Paychex to push the change of the pay periods and again I said no.
When I went to run my first payroll, I learned that they went ahead and set it up the way they wanted even after I directly told them no twice. This began a series of errors where I would call in and after talking to several people and being on hold several hours the issue would be resolved, only to find out afterwards that in fixing the issue, 2 or 3 new issues had been created. Eventually I got fed up and cancelled the account and of course now I'm writing this review while I'm on hold to find out why I'm still being billed for an account that has been cancelled. I wish so much that I had checked these reviews before setting up an account with Paychex because I see countless others that have had similar experiences and frankly, I have strong doubts about the authenticity of any of the positive reviews here. SAVE YOURSELF COUNTLESS HOURS OF AGGRAVATION & WASTED TIME AND USE SOMEONE ELSE.

So I switched over to Paychex thinking it would save me some time but it had ended up being more of a headache and more time consuming than my previous provider. From adding new employees, to creating manual checks, the process takes about 4-5 extra steps due to tall the different tabs, sections and clicks you have to go thru on their website.
To create a manual check on my previous provider, it only took 2 clicks and less than 5 seconds if you already have the data. For paychex, I'm not even sure how to do it, you have to click on payroll, then scroll over to an employee name, click on a drop down menu, make a selection and I'm still not sure how to get printed. To create a new employee, same multi step process involving way too many tabs, clicks and procedures. What should take 2 minutes takes about 10 minutes on Paychex. So not only did this cost more, it takes up more time.

My mother in-law passed away in April and we got the information about her 401k in early May. We were told by 4 different people that the paperwork was on its way. When we called again to tell them that we had not received it, a new rep says “I don’t know why they told you that, nothing has ever been sent”. When we asked if they can send an email, they said they don’t do that. So we hung up and called again. The new rep said they could and we finally get an email June 18th. We filled it out the same day.
On Monday June 28th we called again and the rep says “Everything has been processed and a check will be mailed out Thursday, July 1st. We call today Friday, July 2nd and they say “I’m sorry you got the wrong information but your check is still being processed.” Why should it be this difficult to send money that does not belong to you? Why didn’t anyone tell us about getting direct deposit when you first emailed the paperwork? (We did ask) Where are the supervisors and why can’t I speak to one?

This company is the single worse vendor I have ever worked with. I have been trying to resolve an issue with the State of Virginia where Paychex made an error in a payroll tax filing and they have been negligent, at best, in their efforts to resolve it, to the point where my company just received three fines from the Virginia Department of Taxation.

My company used Paychex for over 20 years, but over the past year + their service was so poor that I switched companies. I didn't want to have to go through the hassle of switching companies but their response time was so bad. You can no longer pick up the phone and reach your payroll "specialist." I would wait days before receiving a reply and when I did it was an email, not a phone call. It took almost 3 months to get a tax form amended.

My company has been using Paychex for over two years because they purchased our former payroll company. There have been numerous mistakes. They leave out sales peoples auto allowance for example. There was an employee that moved from NJ to PA. They changed the address on the pay stub but kept taking taxes out for NJ. We set up a new employee in DE and they were taking out taxes in CA and MD. Another new employee was set up but not paid for over a month because they need a different direct deposit form. This is only a small portion of the mistakes. I have called a supervisor and all she did was make excuses. I asked to speak to a supervisor two weeks ago and have not received any communication. It is clear to me that I am dealing with people who just don't care. My only hope is that someone will see this review and respond.

We have been with Paychex a few months now and nothing has been easy about it. Constantly being blown off by my rep and have to wait on hold to speak with anyone if you need immediate assistance. The point of using a payroll service is to make your life easier, which has not been the case with us. They say they are compatible and user friendly but it’s almost impossible to submit payroll with assignments on an iPad.

I was originally signed up with Paychex under another company. That company has long since closed down. When my current company decided to start using Paychex, I thought, great- I love them. Something has changed in the last 8 years. First I couldn't sign on because everything related to me was from my previous employer - phone number, email, login, password. I still show the company on my profile now that I have finally gotten into my profile after 5 chats. Each chat gave me only one piece of the puzzle. No one stayed with me to see it through. This process of getting access to my paychecks has been harder than any other software or website that I have ever tried and I have been on quite a few. I am so disappointed with this process.
Why would you leave information from a previous employer who has shut down? Why would I be burdened by that information which I don't remember 8 years later with a new employer? You guys need to figure out how to take on an employee who has been with a previous company and how to better chat with your customers and not leave them hanging. If I were in a position to chose a company now, there is no way I would choose Paychex. We even used them for HR services and paid to get help to set up our employee manual. That was a different company than this one as far as access. What happened? While I am at it, do you think you could remove my previous company from my profile. I don't particularly like looking at it since they went bankrupt. So very sad.

We have been with Paychex for several years. They boast a large portfolio with many additional add on's, all of which become costly and tie you into staying with them when they do a horrible job in other departments. HR, was costly and did nothing for us but create a generic employee handbook meanwhile leaving us open to PAGA law here in California. A former disgruntled employee took advantage of this and we had to pay out a huge settlement. This should have been caught by paychex "HR" specialist from the start. They take no responsibility for this oversight. Meanwhile this one error could have bankrupted us. If it wasn't for the fact that our business was so busy this would have been a departure from them. Sadly our agency is growing too quickly, has benefits, and 401K plan through Paychex tying us in.
Fast forward, we continue to have small issue after small issue with them that all could lead to bigger problems. Any time these are brought up, Paychex absolves its self always placing the blame on us. Stating they are just a recording/reporting company and that it is our duty to double, triple check their practices and numbers to make sure everything is okay. They never take responsibility, their customer services is insulting, and they will leave you open to legal vulnerableness. STAY AWAY. Now that our agency is in a more stable position internally we will be looking at other payroll companies this year in order to break our ties. Couldn't be more disappointed!

Our experience with this company has been absolutely terrible. It started with our previous payroll company retiring, and they had set up moving all of their accounts over to Paychex. I should have done more research before we agreed to sign on, but lesson learned. As we moved towards tax season, we realized there was a massive discrepancy. Mind you, we had no hand in switching over any information from our previous provider to this one. It took several attempts to get someone to contact us back regarding the discrepancy, and then another several weeks to get someone to actually look into it. We contacted at least 10 individuals throughout the company, with no response.
When our 'payroll specialist' finally got back with us, they found several payrolls were missed in the transfer and they proceeded to tell us they would charge us nearly $700 to fix the discrepancy. No matter how many times we tried to explain that there was no possible way we could be at fault, they didn't listen. We had to close our small business down for a a day to go to the nearest office (an hour away) to get anything resolved. Even then the employee in the office (by herself) had an almost impossible time trying to get through to anyone to get our issue resolved. Several months later, and plenty of failed correspondence, we were finally told that we wouldn't be charged the fee. The amount of time waisted on this issue alone should have been enough for us to jump ship.
Afterwards, we were offered a 401k option for our company. Again, I should have done more research, but we're big on giving people a chance. We were told it would be easy for the owner and myself to contribute. We signed up for this 401k over a year ago, and we have never been able to use it. After waiting on hold for over an hour to get through to the department, we were told they would have to call us back. When they called back, we were with several customers and asked if we could call them back in 10 minutes. They told us no, and that we would have to go back in the waiting queue. Again we tried to contact numerous employees to try to find a resolution, and nearly all of our e-mails and calls went unanswered. We were sold a clear, easy to use package that we never had access to.
Later, we were sent an e-mail asking us to explore further HR options. During the meeting, we were told that upgrading our package with Paychex would provide us with "a payroll assistant that actually knows what they're doing". According to the individual that was trying to sell more services, the only way to get a Senior Payroll Specialist that knows their job well is to pay more money. Ridiculous. We've had countless disappointing interactions through our time with Paychex. They no longer accept reviews on Google, or Facebook, but I felt like I had to find somewhere to warn people to learn from our experience. We've even been told "We do not fill out forms" after asking for someone to help us with an income verification form. After expressing all of our grievances when we were asked why we were terminating our account, the response we received was "I am so sorry for your poor experience with Paychex."
We're loyal customers. We run on a small town mentality, and just expect to be treated with decency and honesty. This is something Paychex will never be able to provide. Stay away from Paychex. You'll just throw money down the drain with this company, and never be able to resolve anything because of their terrible customer service.

I will be brief. I had issued the first two rounds of checks with Paychex. It was the first month. I was discussing payroll with my CPA who expressed concern about an issue with the way my account was set up that had serious implications and penalties for my business if not corrected. I reached out to Paychex with a total of 9 emails starting with my direct agent, through her chain of command up to the corporate office. After several weeks (of being charged more for not running payroll than for running it) they told me the issue was resolved. After following up I learned that it was not resolved. They lied. They are not responsive, they don’t know a lot about payroll. We paid our cost several hundred dollars to correct the issue finally.

I work with several payroll companies and even recommend payroll providers to clients. I'm really writing this review to warn anyone thinking of hiring this company as their payroll provider to seriously reconsider. I think Paychex is the worst payroll provider out there or at least is out of the several companies I have used over the years. It is really important that a payroll service provider is trusted, competent, and has great customer service. Unfortunately, Paychex is none of this.
I cannot tell you the amount of errors that Paychex has committed and this was with providing very clear instructions on changes for each payroll period (you don't even receive reports to review before processing). I cannot trust them to submit tax filings on time or accurately and they even voided two payroll periods for an employee without authorization from the client or myself. This void if not caught would have meant an improper W2, taxes not remitted, and the employee in a tough situation.
The worst is that the payroll specialist is unresponsive and you cannot reach anyone over the phone. I've had more success with Twitter unfortunately. It would be great if their customer service was at least expectational because I understand everyone is human and there are likely to be errors, but the fact that you cannot get ahold of anyone as a payroll provider is ridiculous. Every payroll period I have to worry that payroll is not getting processed because the specialists are this unresponsive. One time I was even able to get through on the phone and instead of helping me, the person on the phone actually yelled and insulted me - all I needed was confirmation that our state registrations had been set-up with Paychex, but that was too difficult. Please do not use this payroll provider.

I went into Paychex flex website and saw that they were charging me outrageous fees, I had over a $1000 in my account and now I have $90 when I chatted with their support team they told me it was because my plan was the only one left from a company that was closed, so I was getting charged all the fees. I think this is absurd and should be illegal. I did not agree to that, why would I be charged for a 401K program from a previous employer. They literally stole my money. I set up a payroll account with Paychex for a personal employee. The specialist who set up our account collected all of the documents required in order to have Paychex assume responsibility of paying the taxes on my behalf, filing the quarterly reports and paying the EDD fees, etc. He assured us it was set up and ready to go. That specialist then passed us off to a new specialist who was completely incompetent. She made a mistake of pulling funds from a different account instead of mine and paying someone else's employee instead of mine. So at that point I asked for a new specialist (this is #3 now).
A month or so in she tells me none of the documents were in to allow Paychex to do the reporting and pay the EDD and taxes on our behalf so not only do we need to do that but now we are late and will face late fees. I now have delinquency notices from the EDD, my taxes went unpaid and when I asked Paychex for the address of where to send the tax payments they didn't know! I got two different addresses from two different specialists.
I have contacted the company dozens and dozens of times over the course of the past six months and all they do is hand me off the next person. No one will go to that first specialist responsible for setting up the account to find out what went wrong. I have evidence of emails that he received all the documentation. I have emails with him telling me it was good to go. But not one Paychex representative will tell me they messed this up and help me fix it. They just put the blame back on me. They don't care about us individuals who only employ one worker. They aren't making enough money on us to treat us right. I am still in disbelief that they created this huge mess and won't take ONE SINGLE SHRED of responsibility. It is disgusting. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS unless you want a huge amount of stress and mess to clean up by yourself with no help.

I was originally with Paychex "SmallBiz Payroll". At some point they switched me over to "PayChex Flex". It calculated the OT incorrectly, they opened up the employee portal for employees to change their own tax status and many other issues that they refused to address. I asked them to change an EIN # to our new one and change bank account information, which they denied.
Finally, I chose to change providers in June 2020. At the end of Jan. 2021, we didn't see the W-2's yet. When I called they said my new provider would process them for us. But the new provider has a different EIN, the last paycheck on the old EIN was from PayChex. They agreed that W-2's were included in my package but gave me 3 different excuses on why they needed to charge me to process them (each a different rep).
1. Since I no longer used their service, the agreement on processing the W-2's is void. I would have to pay, if I still wanted them.2. Since we are past the period that they were supposed to provide them, I would have to pay a fee to get them processed.
3. Because I did not tell them that the new processor was using a different EIN, they assumed that they would not process the W-2's. This is 1 of the things I tried to do before changing companies, change the EIN.
Meanwhile, they really only care about charging me more money for services that were already paid for and part of my package (which they agree to). Paychex, please do not reply to this comment with a canned message to write an e-mail like you did all the others. If you really care, fix the issue and get us our W-2's quickly.

We used this company for years. Their payroll processing fees are very confusing as well as their reports. They continue to switch account representatives without notifying the customer. Account representatives are unresponsive and do not provide the customer service they market as a company. We chose to switch providers due to the inconsistency of their services and billing. Apparently it’s the responsibility of the customer to request year end statements (W-2, 940) if you no longer have any active account at the end of the year.
As per previous reviews, it’s the customer's fault for assuming that a business would automatically send year end documents if you conducted business with them during the year your filing.... which all small businesses have to do/provide by law. Not sure why Paychex is not held to this standard. By the way there will be an additional charge to process these documents. I would highly recommend not to use Paychex as your payroll service provider. Standing your for their standard response to email their reviews department. Wait for it....

Hello, Our company has been a long term client of Paychex and started using their 401(K) services several years ago. Unfortunately, I would not recommend to anyone to use their 401(K) services. Complete ineptness. We were set up for automatic contributions. The company stopped withholding automatic contributions from our account several months ago, completely at random, without any notice. Meanwhile, they continued to charge us their monthly fee without fail. Moreover, when the problem was discovered by us, after over 2 hours waiting on the phone, being bounced back between 3 different people, the last one of whom placed me on hold and never returned (!), we still weren't able to receive any answers, explanation or a proposal on how this will be fixed.
I was able to finally communicate with another customer service representative over chat but no matter how much I asked to be connected directly to a supervisor, a manager or someone with more than a perfunctionary knowledge of their system, who would be able to look into this case and provide some answers, the answer was that no one is available to speak. At 5:15 pm, in a company that has working hours until 8pm, apparently every single supervisor and manager has signed off for the day already. I operate my own small business and we are always available to take clients' calls until at least 6:30 pm. But for a large business like Paychex, working hours seem to be very conveniently set to end at 5pm, it seems.
I asked to provide me with a direct phone number so I can reach someone tomorrow without wasting 2 hours on hold again, and the answer was "NO". For a company that markets itself to small businesses, this type of ineptness multiplied by a terrible (non-existent) customer service is unacceptable. I see other clients being unhappy with their service. I wished I checked reviews before signing up for their 401(K) service.

I left PayChex years ago due to ongoing problems. I went to Advantage who was shortly thereafter acquired by PayChex. I am paid on a monthly basis on the 15th of each month. I have a single employee who is paid every 2 weeks. In the past year I had to contact them after I was not paid one month. I was told my specialist was "out of the office" so someone else would handle it. I was also paid twice within a week. After bringing it to their attention, via another contact because my specialist was out again, they reimbursed my account but kept the fees they charged me.
I sent my specialist an email early December asking that my Auto Fringe benefit be paid in my next check. I was told, by another stand in for my specialist that the notes were made to do so. Then, in Dec I was again paid twice in one month. As I was preparing my year end tax information for my accountant it came to my attention that after being advised that my Auto Fringe would be paid ... it in fact had not been. I asked my specialist to please include her manager on emails following my first double payment so that he could see what was going on. She didn't do so. The second double payment, failure to pay the Auto Fringe & failure to pay my employee their final check for the 2020 year all occurred after my request was not fulfilled. What happened then was they said it was my fault for not catching what was being sent to the unemployment office. I had all the proof that they knew I was the owner and that they had said I needed to pay unemployment, but they did nothing. NOTHING. They blamed it on me. The helpful person in the unemployment office said she had seen it many times. If you want to use an aggregator service like Quicken or Personal Capital, you can't. As someone nearing retirement I need to be able to look across my (Paychex) 401k as well as my IRA etc. For example am I 60/40 across everything? With their 1990's technology it is impossible to do so. I've spoken several times to someone who is supposed to help me. She is very nice but has provided zero assistance. Something has definitely changed with this company!! This is not the company I signed up with! I’ve been with Paychex for a few years, only because I don’t particularly care for change. I’ve had a few issues over the years, but they’ve always been satisfied through good managers fairly resolving the issues. However this last occurrence has caused me to go with another payroll company!! They processed an entire payroll period in advance using hours from the previous work week; they paid employees that were not reported to have hours (just giving money away!). They caused my company to lose money and confidence in their service.
When I called to speak to a manager, I had to leave 3 messages. He never called back! When I demanded to speak to “his” supervisor, he immediately became available... But his attitude was extremely poor, as if he was doing me a favor by talking to me; or that I was interrupting his work day. He never offered a professional courtesy, so I asked... His offer was insulting considering the anxiety and financial stress this caused. I haven’t responded to his email because my response will be to take my business elsewhere.

We are a small business under 7 employees. After we signed up with the Paychex, we realized that they were charging a lot more in payroll processing than what was promised to us. We canceled their services late November 2019 and asked for entire year data to be exported to us so we can upload to ADP. To our dismay, even after canceling their service, they went ahead and issued w-2s in January 2020 for the calendar year Jan 2019-November 2019 the time we were enrolled with them. We called them that we cancelled their services and their w-2's are incorrect whereas ADP filed full years' w-2s. They said we cancelled payroll processing but we did not cancel their tax filing services. How ridiculous response is this as if this company is working like two disjointed organizations.
When pandemic hit in March 2020 and when employees started applying for the benefits they were told by the IRS that they earned twice the amount. We informed paychex that they reverse their w-2s based on the IRS suggestion and set everything right with the IRS. Around September, we received a note from the IRS that we owe them $100k. After researching we found that paychex had filed Q4 2020 and annual payroll return 944 whereas ADP had already filed these returns with accurate numbers. IRS suggested that paychex should reverse their filing as it reflects inaccurate numbers. Despite numerous requests, paychex did not take any action and IRS sent us a notice in November to levy our assets.
Again we sent numerous requests and paychex came back with saying it is not their responsibility to file amended return because it was not their error. We requested them to provide copy of the tax returns they filed (which we paid for and entitled to) so we can file amendment ourselves and to this date they have not responded. Paychex persons do not even bother to respond to our email nor providing phone number to call. This is the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Their website is very poor to navigate and once you cancel services you cannot even get any reports including tax forms that you paid for with their services.
I have no idea where to turn to other than paying IRS to provide me returns filed by the paychex. I would suggest stay away from paychex. There are better payroll services at a better prices out there. Save yourself a runaround when you have better things to do like running your business like myself who is writing this bad experience working past midnight.

If you are thinking about signing up for anything to do with Paychex, don't do it! After a terrible startup, took them six months to transfer 401k funds and many other errors including inaccurate math on 401k accounts, funds not being in the proper funds and 12,000 dollars not being anywhere and only discovered that is was missing and at first they said that it had not been deducted but then after I did some research it was in fact deducted and held by them somewhere, who knows where. The most aggravating part of it all is that one department cannot "see" what another department has done or needs to do, can you imagine that 401k can't see what payroll has done as far as deductions!
The salesperson gave us a cost for the PEO and claimed that "our savings on worker's comp alone would pay for the PEO", what a lie. We were being charged over $326 per pay period which means about $7000 per year, I now have a quote in place for $2900 for the year. If you were getting service then the cost might be justified, these people are so stupid and the system so bad they made me crazy. I am not the type who complains and here I am on the web ranting about how bad they are! As many people have said, they do not deserve one star, they truly stick!

I can’t even begin to describe the problems this company has. Despite paying good money for them to provide payroll services for my small company of 10-12 employees, there has been nothing but issues from the start. Communication is not good. If there is an issue your “representative” tells you to call another department. Unhelpful and unprofessional. I had to email many supervisors and representatives over the course of nearly 3 months to get vacation/sick time for an employee and switch them from an consultant to a W2. They charged me right away for the sick and vacation time (an extra fee) but yet forgot to add this on the employee's profile until I had to spend time calling them and having them backdate it.
Paperwork kept not getting filed and disregarded. Employees not getting paid on time, then when I call and spend hours figuring it out I was told that the employee would be paid that day. Only to find out it never occurred. So I then need to take time out of my day to follow up again. It doesn’t help to elevate your concerns to supervisors as they don’t follow up either. They either don’t care about your business or don’t value small companies. Not sure which one it is but I am researching frantically to find a new payroll company.

Due to the Pandemic and job loss, it was necessary for me to disburse and close out my 401k from my previous employer. At first it seemed pretty simple. My online account stated what my vested balance was, all my statements show my activity throughout the year with the matching vested balance. Paychex screwed up a $2000 loan amount which was paid back in full over a year ago. They were still showing the $2000 balance because someone "keyed it in twice by a mistake". So they then deducted the $2000 loan amount off of my vested balance amount.
I have called there 20 times in the last 4 weeks. Speaking to every department all stating different things. No managers available to speak with. No calls backs as they say. No emails with their findings as promised. This company has NO IDEA what they are doing. They stole $2000 from me and I am at a loss on what to do. I will NEVER EVER deal with Paychex for ANY services again in my life. Even my plan Administrator said they are very slow and hard to work with. He has also been looking into this for weeks with NO RESOLUTION. BEWARE.

But I sent her 2 emails and 1 text message letting her know we couldn’t afford it right now, I was being consistent of her time. All of the sudden, I get 3 charges on my account totaling over $300 dollars. I called & they will reimburse me my money but told them I expressed my concerns once more, I was deceived! Said no! Anytime I had a question for PayChex, my hold time was at least 20 minutes. Then you’d finally reach someone and they’d say that’s not their department - so I’d wait on hold again. Their departments don’t communicate between payroll and onboarding new employees. Additionally, when I left my company and became eligible to request a cash out of 401k- they charged me $75 to withdraw- but they did not provide me this information before enrolling AND they involuntarily enrolled me! When I called them about it, they said they’d send me the policy which I never saw initially— obviously not helpful. I would NOT recommend this terrible outfit to anyone. In fact, it seems like a scam.

I've been working with Paychex through my employer for the past six years. The FSA account makes it very difficult to file basic claims for debit card usage. There doesn't seem to be a clear reason why some transactions require more information and others are accepted. Sometimes I have identical co-pay claims for small amounts. One will be approved while the other requires more information. It's a tedious process of going back and forth with healthcare providers and Paychex to provide exactly Paychex requires.
At first, I thought I just wasn't doing a good job getting the right type of receipt. After awhile, Paychex would find a way to deny my claim for reimbursement (small sums, like $40). I would always get the hold removed from my debit card eventually but it usually required me to follow up with a phone call, wait on hold for 30 minutes or go back to my provider to request a more detailed receipt. There has to be a company that processes FSA claims more efficiently and with better customer service. At this point, I'd rather pay the out of pocket taxes than keep dealing with this headache.

When our account was finally closed in Feb 2020 (we stopped processing payroll through them in May 2019) they continued to bill us for their Section 125 plan ($50/month) until I called them to cancel. Silly me assumed that closing our account meant our account was CLOSED. When I called to cancel they said they couldn't refund the charges since I didn't call them to cancel. We were charged and they stole over $1,300 from us since we stopped processing payroll through them. Don't ever use them.

We are a very small company. We are being charged and paying $10.00 a month for 2 employees that do not participate in the 401K Plan. Even though they do not participate, they were given a distribution, and have no idea they have money in a 401K account. The funds do not earn interest, and are not invested. It makes no sense that they were given any money, it should have been distributed to the people participating. I was told too bad, that is they way they (Paychex) do it. I was told as long as they have a balance, I have to pay for them as if they were participating, even though the employees choose Not to participate.
I was also told they could not received the money until they terminated their employment. I am stuck paying $120.00 a year for as many years as they are employed? I was told by Megan at customer service that was the way it was, and too bad if I did not like it. There was nothing I could do about it. Or I could terminate the service, which I am looking into. It is not easily done when you consider tax consequences for the employees. We only have 2 people participating as the company overall has been very unhappy with the program and the service. I actually pulled all my funds out due to the lack of customer service and ridiculous "rules" that do not make any sense. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I have been asking for a worker's comp report since our policy renewed in Sept. and was promised it would be done the next day - that was 10-days ago and no one will respond to my emails. I have gone up the chain of command and still no response. I finally asked the person who answered my call for payroll why I am constantly on hold for 30-minutes and his answer was - a lot of people were on vacation. Not a good answer. This company suddenly declined - I do not know what is going on, but I no longer trust them.

The only reason one would hire a payroll company is to ensure the correct taxes are being deducted and being distributed to the correct agencies to avoid penalties and interest. With that said - I hired this company based on a neighboring business recommendation. The representative who signed me up said he needed my state and federal numbers, which were provided. I hadn't processed payroll for a few years, but I was assured that these numbers don't expire.
In June of 2019, a employee is hired and money is deducted from my account for payroll taxes and as far as I knew they were being distributed to the correct agencies. I also assumed all the forms were being filed on my behalf. I had some problems with my contact with this company and decided to switch to another payroll company in February 2020. Money continued to be deducted for processing payroll for 3 months after they were not being used.
It was when the new payroll company went to file my taxes for the 1st quarter of 2020 in California I was informed that the number provided for the state was not a valid account. At first I dismissed this as PayChex had made the deposits, or so I thought. I finally got the account number straightened out, but that leaves what did PayChex do with the money they were supposed to deposit, and more importantly why was I not informed there was a problem when the 2nd quarter of taxes were returned to them. The 3rd, 4th, and 1st quarter of 2020 was the same thing.
Fast forward to today - I've been going back and forth with this company trying to get them to make things right. At first they said they would do this for me for a discounted rate of a $150 per quarter, or I could have my account/CPA do this for me. Let me get this straight, you want another $600 to do what you were hired for in the first place? This was the reason I hired your company. To avoid situations like this. Some back and forth emails and they agree to do this, but they want me to DocuSign an Absolution Letter (Case # **) absolving them of any liability for the penalties and interest for their negligence. This was something that should have been rectified the 2nd quarter of 2019 and yet here we are the 3rd quarter of 2020.
To be transparent the state's money was redeposited back to my account in April of 2020, but once again there was no communication of what this was for and I thought it was a refund for being charged for services they were collecting for, but no longer were providing. I'd like this company to fix their mistakes and it is their fault I have penalties and interest owed to California. As mentioned in the beginning, why hire a payroll company - isn't it to avoid situations like this?

During a phone call to explore this I found out that if I don't ask them to initiate payroll at least two days prior to the payroll date they charge almost double. Who knew? Now I am on hold with the 401 folks because they are charging me $70 per month to put $396 in a 401 account. This was after paying $1500 to even get the 401 going in the first place. And that was explained to me after I had agreed. To be fair, this has gone on for far too long and that's my fault, but I also have had two parents to take care of. Both dead now so I have time to look at this stuff. But really, it started out at $28.00 per month or close to that.

Lost my job during Covid in a company using Paychex for payroll and 401k management. I issued a 401k rollover into my personal IRA so I could withdraw some emergency money and got hit with a 75$ distribution fee. Paychex is a company that epitomizes the greed of a financial firm ripping average Americans off during a national epidemic when people can barely pay for food. Paychex also overcharges for account maintenance (way above industry standard) of top of the funds' management fees. If you are a business considering Paychex for payroll or your 401k plans please consider an ethical company that actually respects people. Paychex will overcharge and rip off your employees and your staff will not be happy! Shame on you Paychex for pocketing 75$ for an automated digital process!

After referring a client, Paychex convinced the owner and only employee that he should have their HR/Employee Handbook services to the tune of $4-500.00 per month. Apparently this was a handbook to protect himself, from himself. Upon discovery, this was cancelled months ago. Now several months later. Paychex began to deduct $180.00 per month for 401K fees. What 401K? We've asked for an authorization signature and a refund. It remains to be seen whether or not we get either. I've stopped referring Paychex to any client.

I fired their Cobra Department last month, but this month they sent me another bill (which I will not pay). When I emailed them about the bill and the fact that I still do not have the $500, no one responded...which is typical. If you are considering this company, run now.

USE AT YOUR OWN PERIL!!! They deserve a negative star if elephants could fly right?? They didn’t get anything correct. Payroll to employees is very crucial and they made the process a living nightmare. They made it two payrolls! Only because it took that long to get another one in place. It took them an extra month to get started, and I knew I had made a mistake. I was already looking for a replacement before the first payroll and had I known the level of incompetence, I would have never let them go forward for the one month they did get. Lack of communication. Last minute- we need this signed and this signed and we didn’t get this after documents being sent 3 and 4 times. They took 401k deductions without a 401k in place. They sent 100% of payroll for federal income tax.
Now 6 weeks after I terminated services, in my opinion for breach of contract, they are charging 1200 for “final audit” for a $50,000 in payroll. If it wasn’t so “fubar” it would almost be funny. So as other reviewers out there have posted the last dime they are getting from my small business, and the lawyer will at least be asked about this, not that it would be worth the hassle, and this crooked company knows that. There are much much better companies out there!!!!

At one point, my payroll specialist sent me "by mistake" the W-2's for six employees from another company…including their social security numbers, income amount, home addresses, etc. All at my fingertips, right there. If I was not an honest person I could have easily used this information. These people had six figure incomes. I have had them regularly process payroll incorrectly…probably 10+ times a year or more. This company does not care about your business AT ALL. They are difficult. When you have a problem, they show very little concern. In my experience with Paychex, as a provider of 401(k) retirement services, there are decided shortcomings in the quality of their service. While they did provide what I found to be an excellent selection of funds to invest in at the same time they also lack many features that other companies offer standard. For example:
2) Paychex doesn't provide detailed up to date information on accounts.
3) Paychex doesn't provide any information on employer matching funds.
4) Paychex doesn't allow account holders the option to rollover their fund in like-kind to another retirement account.
5) Paychex charges a $75 fee for rollover checks. Many financial services do rollovers such as this for free. Is it a coincidence this is the only rollover option they offer?
6) In my case, in a process filled with errors and a not at all user-friendly system, my rollover request took 5 weeks to complete.
Most professional financial institutions provide all the above features as a standard service. If Fidelity is a Porsche then Paychex is a Yugo. In my opinion, it's generic, bare-bones, brand X, bargain-basement financial service and it shows. Before hiring Paychex you should thoroughly review their service, what they offer, and what they don't. Then compare them to other companies and see what they offer. Then finally ask what is the best service for your employees and will serve them best for their retirement and investment needs.

Yeah, you heard that right, $14,000 per year for a company of 12 employees. I never agreed to that price and now that I look back at our payroll fee history, I see it gradually climbs without authorization. I have been asking for payroll fee breakdowns and a solid quote for future business as I do not want the hassle of changing payroll companies. We will see how it goes.

I am a business owner in NYC and was completely ripped off by them. I cancelled the account on several occasions and (admittedly my fault for not checking regularly) came to find that for TWO YEARS they were auto debiting funds from my account for services I was not getting! When I confronted them they gave me a run around for over 6 months and then credited me $45 after fraudulently taking over $500! Don't walk, RUN from this horrible company!

After sign up, I was told they could not do this, but instead wanted me to sign up for their retirement program instead. I also have been passed on to several different assigned payroll reps, the majority of whom are inconsistent in their availability, slow to no response time on matters or payroll inaccuracy corrections & most notably, do not offer accuracy/correctness of payroll service. I also have been overcharged for service this year without formal notice, and currently am waiting for response in resolve this matter.

I hired Paychex for my payroll and Worker's Compensation insurance, because I was sick and tired of my previous Worker's Compensation insurance company holding on to an exuberant amount of money until the end of the year. I preferred to go the route to pay what was needed. But I cancelled my payroll and Worker's Compensation and payroll services with them in November 2018, because of the non stop harassment to purchase their other services. Today March 16, 2020 I received a bill from Paychex Insurance Company Inc. that I owe a balance of $393.22 from November 10, 2018, and they will be deducting this amount from my account. Wait...what!?!? That is ridiculous!!! As a small business I can't go back to my customer more than a year later and be like you owe me hundreds of dollars. These larger companies need to be held accountable for their oversights. Oh well it cost you money... Guess you'll do better moving forward!

Worst decision of my life! They have stolen so much money from me by signing me up for services that I don’t need and didn’t ask for. Then it is 100% impossible to cancel the service. I have been trying to cancel them for a year and a half and they are still charging me! I am going to have to close my business checking account in order to get rid of them. They have literally taken thousands of dollars from me! When you call you just get the runaround and they send you to someone else that also gives you the runaround. My experience with Paychex has been an absolute nightmare. Do not use them!

I recently called Paychex because the company I worked for closed and I never received my W2. I got on the phone with the rudest man that no empathy whatsoever about my situation. I tried to explain to him that my wages had never been reported to social security or the IRS by them and he said because I wasn't the accountant owner he wasn't talking to me and he was disconnecting the call. After seeing all the reviews on different issues one common thing is the arrogance of every employee of Paychex.

I must hire a new payroll service and my bank's branch manager recommended Paychex. She will never do so again. My stomach began to churn during the set-up process because my contact consistently failed to reply, follow through or get anything right. Try as I may, she could not wrap her head around my title no matter how many times I told her, "No, I am not Owner. We are an LLC. I am Member." The closest she got was Managing Member - WRONG! But that was the least of it. The Specialist's promised 30-minute training session lasted a scant five minutes. He could not wait to get off the phone, which really did not matter because everything he said was wrong.
Then came the magic week - payroll #1. Mind you, I have but two employees, so doing payroll for my business is not rocket science. But they got it wrong and were told in writing to stop everything unless and until they could sort things out. Uhuh ... they issued two direct deposits, but reversed them shortly thereafter. Since my employees live paycheck-to-paycheck, and suddenly seemed to have watched theirs evaporate, you won't be surprised that I had two super surly employees on my hands. Solution: I wrote their checks, stupidly assuming that sorting things out with Paychex would not be that hard. Wrong again.
Finally, and only because my branch manager interceded on my behalf, we got the payroll funds Paychex had helped itself to out of my account returned, but only AFTER it received two written cease-and-desist orders. My banker has blocked Paychex's access to my account, so, unlike other reviews I have read here, I am confident that this tawdry experience is behind me. If only I had found these reviews at the front end of all of this. I hope you read them and then search elsewhere for payroll services.

We have been with Paychex since July of 2017. To start, their sales reps pressure you into signing what they say is a "Locked in" rate for as long as you are a Paychex Member. Why? Because we're a 501c3 Organization and they believe in giving back. Yeah Right! One year later, we saw an increase of almost 200% in our monthly fees. I had to call and talk to multiple people to get this back down to the normal rate. Frustrating.
Moving forward, when they set up our 401k account they didn't set it up as a SAFE HARBOR plan like we instructed. So one of our employees lost the opportunity to contribute the full amount he would have been to otherwise. They also screwed up our retirement contributions for another one of our employees. On the payroll side, they take forever to get back to you with a question and they also managed to mess up one of the FSA accounts we tried to set up for our employee. All in all, it's a company that promised a lot and failed multiple times to deliver. My only mistake is not switching sooner.

Customer service is beyond awful. They pressure you to sign agreements and don't explain what the contract states. They don't return calls, they don't answer questions. Their fees are outrageous. When trying to cancel, they then tell you that there is a $1500 transfer fee when the contract clearly states that there is no cancellation fee. When asked about this, Paula in customer service stated, "Well, you then spoke with the wrong person." When we brought up that who we spoke with worked with PayChex, she then stated that we should have read their contract better. When sales people come out to meet with you, they pressure you to sign at that time. It would take hours to read the full contract. Even if you said you would get back to them after you read the contract, they likely would not get back to you as they never do.

From the beginning there were multiple red flags in the quality of service Paychex offers. I foolishly overlooked these because I knew of multiple other businesses using them and assumed they were a reputable company. After multiple tax reporting errors within a few months time (that I or the state had to discover, Paychex overlooked) which have resulted in numerous hours wasted fixing, penalties and other frustrations, I couldn't help but vent to other business-owner colleagues. Sure enough, several of them use Paychex and informed me that they are experiencing the same frustrations with this company. When trying to resolve the errors, my "designated client representative" has been rude and dismissive to myself and my office manager. I cannot wait to dump this company and won't look back.
I strongly recommend using ANY other company but this one. After some research I am in talks with switching my account to Gusto and so far the customer service experience is night and day (worlds better than with Paychex), and the cost structure is nearly identical. I am very excited to be making the change and hope that this review can help spare others from having the same miserable experience that I and countless others are having/have had with Paychex.

As Treasurer of a non-profit we had Paychex process our payrolls until September 30, 2019. After some problems, including our staff not getting paid at one point (their error) we switched to a different company. They continued to bill us and automatically withdraw the money from our operating account but later refunded it after complaints. In January they submitted incorrect year-end reports and W-2's even though a representative called and asked if we needed them to provide the service. We complained again and they said, "Sorry, but there is nothing we can do." They told us to call the government agencies and tell them that two sets of year-end reports and W-2's were submitted. They also billed us for the year-end processing.
They claim they will refund us but can't assist us because they are no longer our provider and do not have power of attorney. It's ironic they can't call for us but they can continue to pull money from our checking account even though they have a Separation Agreement on file. I would never recommend Paychex to anyone. Their departments don't communicate with each other and they claim it is computer error. Not an excuse. Obviously these people are not doing their jobs correctly and there is no one in upper management to complain to. They just shift you around from one representative and I cannot find a corporate phone number or email to send this complaint to.

I had overpayed for COBRA and was told in September by a Paychex representative, via email, that they would refund the overpayment. After requesting the refund again in mid-Novebmer, I finally received a check for a fraction of the amount. I immediately contacted Paychex and told them that I was owed more. I was told that the payments team would review it and I would be contacted as soon as there was an update. Later in November, in December, and January I sent emails the person who was supposed to be looking into this - I never received a reply.
In January I began calling and each time I was told they were working on it. At one point I was told I couldn't have the refund until the end of February! After more insistent phone calls, I was told that it would be expedited, a check would be mailed to me overnight and I would receive it on January 29. I have not yet received it and have called to get the tracking number, which no one has been able to give to me. I have asked to speak to a manager multiple times and was flatly refused or told they were "busy."
Multiple representatives said they would look into it and call me back with updates, but none ever has. I have been told since January 24 that the remaining balance of my refund has been processed and a check mailed, but I have not received it. My experience is very similar to another experience that has been described here. It seems like this is a pattern of deception and fraud by Paychex. If there was a zero star option for Paychex, I would use it.

Paychex is engaging in fraud. Too much info to type here but they are blatantly reactivating closed accounts. Reactivation yields a withdrawal from bank account on file. My last contact with them was October 2018 - I closed my account and told them to REMOVE MY INFORMATION FROM THEIR SYSTEM. They said it was closed and removed. Almost 2 years later (January 2020) I receive a letter saying they will withdraw nearly $400 from my bank account for "services".
Ridiculous. I called and someone said they would call me back. Unbelievable. No emails no calls 5 days later. They want customers to trust them with their money but they can't figure out how to delete information from their system? On top of that they will just keep making attempt after attempt at withdrawing money that is not theirs, if you cancel. Good luck using a stop payment, they will change the name and keep attempting until it goes through. I reported them to AG. I know 5 other people whom all canceled at the same time and got the same letters. One of them was even told they would take fees out and issue a "refund" of remainder a week later. They are negligent and not an entity that will use your information responsibly. I would never trust them. Scammers. thieves. This will be reposted if removed. THERE IS NO WAY YOU ACCIDENTALLY REACTIVATE CLOSED ACCOUNTS.

When they did ran it I never received my check and they said I have to pay to get another one. Also Jennifer is a payroll specialist who also is a piece of work and does not do her job. Please go somewhere else. ADP is a good company so far.

From our initial account set up in 2017 to our latest payroll issue in 2019, the entire Process of dealing with Paychex has been a nightmare. The lack of organization, streamlining, communication, and responsiveness existent with the Paychex Company were brought to this company's office of the President on several occasions, to no avail. From the start, it took considerable effort on our part just to get the Flex department to respond and move the process of setting up our account forward. Later on, their general non-responsiveness went so far as to delay payment to several of our employees because of errors created by Paychex that were ignored by the Flex team, despite many requests and attempts to get the issue resolved.
Our latest issue with them consists of 2 of our employees having their pay Double-deposited into their account as well as the company owner's account having an unauthorized debit of over $7,000!! We brought these issues to their attention and have been waiting over 5 hours for a response. We have been on hold for over 22 minutes just trying to get someone on the phone who can give us an explanation and, hopefully, a solution! It appears that Paychex will be playing the "Non-responsive" head-in-the-sand card, yet again.
We have spent hours upon hours on the phone either on ridiculously long hold times or, even better, explaining to one department what the other department does since communication between the department employees is too much to ask. Instead, they prefer to let the client figure out Paychex department processes and allow the client be the communicator between the paychex teams; A process which typically consists of tossing a customer in between 2 departments and from rep to rep, each of whom seems as un-informed as the next since it appears they do not encourage their team to keep notes in the system as to the status of a client's account.
To make things more fun, Paychex Flex reps consistently blame another department or another person and seem to collectively enjoy the unified motto of "I didn't do that so I don't know why it's like that" followed by silence and no resolution. Or, (my personal favorite which has happened to me on numerous occasions) they like to simply hang-up when they can't resolve an issue! This leaves the client going through the annoying & time-consuming process of calling again, only to get put on hold again, only to get someone new who has no clue what the issue is. All of the above is compounded by the fact that upper management and so-called "Client Services Specialists" seems care very little about the client's account issues or how to fix them.

I operate a small Katy, Texas manufacturing company and have been using Paychex for our payroll/company healthcare. In 2018 I had a grandchild of which is living with me, along with my daughter. They have both been covered under my healthcare, but I have been told that my granddaughter needs to be removed after 18 months. The father of my granddaughter also works for me but was covered on his mother’s health insurance. Now the father will have to pay for their healthcare and so will our company.
The Houston Paychex team had no idea on the rules as it applies to the Department of Texas Insurance. After days of back and forth, phone discussions with the State of Texas, State of Florida and Aetna, it was determined that since Paychex had the underwriting done in Florida then it doesn't need to comply to Texas state laws. The State of Florida, State of Texas and even Aetna are surprised. There is not much I can do at this point but believe that other companies need to be made aware of potential risks of not being protected by the laws that govern the state of which they operate.

Moreover, they have sent me payroll checks from other companies by mistake too. Talk about confidentiality. I can't believe a company with this level of incompetence is still in business. My old employer started a 401k and enrolled me without my consent just before they went out of business, I found out that $133.90 went to Paychex retirement services by a letter I received from them. Our employees made a decision to enroll in the Health Insurance Plan offered by Paychex. After receiving our premium bills our employees realized that they were not placed in the Tier they had chosen which resulted in higher costs per month. Our employees requested to be placed in the Tier that they had SIGNED A CONTRACT for, however, was told this needed to be completed 7 months from now during open enrollment. HOW ARE MY EMPLOYEES GOING TO AFFORD THIS? As the owner I furious to think that they are putting a financial hardship like this on my employees.
When reaching out to Paychex, I was on hold for over 10 minutes and then I was told they would communicate through email. My employees requested to be removed from the Healthcare Plan due to the unforeseen costs. Extremely disappointed, my employees did everything they were supposed to and now these added costs will not allow for additional holiday bonuses.

We had insurance with Oasis for a year. We got a reasonable renewable from them, and signed on for another year. They moved to Paychex and dropped our coverage, a month into our policy. It turns out that they aren't a certified insurer, and so they can just raise your rates significantly (I have heard of others being increased 42% in a year!) or drop you with no warning and no consequences. And then you have to scramble to be covered. We have 4 weeks to find new insurance for our employees. They won't answer phone calls. I would never risk my personal or employees' health care on such a company if I had the chance to do it again.

After getting a new job and realizing I would no longer need COBRA coverage I requested a refund for the month of coverage that I had just sent in a check for. I was told in early September a check was going out and I'd receive it within 7-10 business days - after that period lapsed with no check insight I called Paychex and they said it must have gotten lost due to no apartment number being listed in my address (which is BS because even without a number listed we still get the mail in my building). But I gave Paychex the benefit of the doubt and believed them when they said another check was being sent out this time with the correct apartment number attached.
Well surprise surprise the second check never arrived either. After the failure of the second check to arrive I called and was told they would wire me the money and I'd see it in my account in 1-2 days - guess what? STILL NO MONEY. SO I call yet again and am told that they were sorry but wiring was now against company policy. So I was promised they would send another check but this time priority mail with a tracking number so I could account for it. The deadline for the priority mail check came and went so I called again and was told they still hadn't received the new check on their end and that I'll hear back next week. I know I won't hear back next week and that I will have to call YET again. My partner and I are going to hire a lawyer because at this point we see no other options.

I called in to ask was direct deposit available. At first I was told no. That I couldn’t. It was too late. Then he changed to I could. Little did I know that you had to request them to release the for to my online account in order to request the funds via direct deposit. After that it goes all wrong. Once the distribution is processed you are given a confirmation number and a message that said fund will be available within a week.
So I wait. No funds ever released and I had been getting the runaround and lied to. It took a nice agent to get a supervisor which I requested three phone calls prior to walk over and get the ball rolling again to get my funds. If I ever work for another company that trust it’s 401k with its services, I will not be participating. The worst and I mean the worst service. But I must say every person that answered the phone was polite but not very helpful. Kudos to the last agent who went the extra mile.

They were incompetent at a deep and systematic level, could not or would not perform even the most basic tasks, follow simple directions, despite directions repeated, in writing, again and again and again. They passed my very simple account between three different managers and two different “account specialists”, none of whom could apparently follow simple directions, all of whom blamed the last worker on the account. They billed me incorrectly, refused to identify what I was being billed for (still haven’t), would not respond to basic questions, wasted hours of my working time deadline with them. I can’t recall a more remarkable show of incompetence with another company I’ve dealt with for my business (law firm) - ever. Run, don’t walk away from this train wreck.

This company DID work to resolve the issue with me, and refunded the money due me. However, it took a lot of work to get this done. I would advise PayChex to NOT seek the business of such small companies as ours. We are a tiny non-profit. We do not have a full-time bookkeeper who might have noticed the errors earlier. Additionally, our only goal in signing up with PayChex was to beat the price we had with another payroll service. As it turns out, the "deal" PayChex offered was good for only one year - but we were never told this at the outset.
PayChex agreed to extend this for an additional year - however, the fee they are currently offering (for the upcoming year) is still more than we were paying for our original payroll service - meaning that in one more year, PayChex would again be charging us considerably more than the original payroll service.
Original Review: Oct. 15, 2019
I am sorry that I had not seen your site prior to signing up with Paychex. I volunteer as the director of a very small non-profit counseling agency. We had been using QuickBooks for payroll, at a cost of $125 per month for unlimited payrolls. The fee included a subscription to QuickBooks online. One of our board members was in a marketing group with a Paychex employee, JB. JB said that because we were a non-profit, Paychex could do our payroll for much less. I cannot recall the figure that she quoted, but it was ridiculously low, and actually had to be adjusted by her manager. We were assured that the rate would be well below that of QuickBooks. The first and second weeks' charges were under $20.
However, in October of 2018, when I was looking up an item online in our bank account, I realized that PayChex had (since the 3rd week) charged us between $70 and $85 per week. Since this was a direct debit, I had no awareness that they were charging us erroneously. I immediately contacted Paychex, and was sent a Proposal which stated that our fees would be $11.+ per week (based on 8 employees) and a $129 annual fee. Paychex told me at the time that they had issued a $720 credit. However, I recently realized that no such credit had been issued - And, in recent weeks, I found that Paychex had followed their proposal for 20 weeks, and then began increasing the fees, without any new proposal. Last week, I realized they were back to charging $50 or more per week, and had been doing so since July.
Further, today they informed me that they "don't refund money when they have overcharged, but just apply credits to future payroll." However, they did not do that either. I cannot help thinking this is a rip-off company. The fact that payroll charges are (typically) directly debited from one's bank account makes it easy for them to depart from the agreement they made with us. This is dishonest - it's hard to imagine that it's accidental, since all of these things are stacked in PayChex' favor. In my opinion, this is a dangerous company!

If there are a few things that a business needs in a payroll company, it is detail-orientation, precision, accuracy and reliability. Paychex is a MAJOR FAIL in all of these categories. In the past 6 months, Paychex has: (1) accidentally paid an employee who was terminated for stealing (this happened 6 months after the employee was terminated), (2) failed to withhold taxes from an employee's paycheck for an entire year because of a "data entry error," resulting in him owing thousands of dollars in back taxes, (3) repeatedly made mistakes on payroll resulting in employees not receiving their paychecks for days (currently, my top employee is in Czech Republic with no paycheck in his account), (4) been unresponsive and mildly dismissive when trying to resolve the above.
I was really rooting for Paychex (I am originally from Rochester, NY and love seeing a hometown company thrive). But this company's unreliability knows no bounds. If you are looking for a Payroll company that will erode employee confidence in you as an employer, choose Paychex. If not, RUN in the other direction.

I am very dissatisfied with my experience with Paychex because their sneaky salesperson lied to up-sell me into an expensive plan which didn't meet my needs and then continued to charge me fees even after I closed my account. The plan she sold me was HR Solutions and we would allegedly get a part-time HR professional to do recruiting, write our Employee handbook, help with documenting problems with employees and fighting illegitimate unemployment claims. This seemed like a great package since we are a small company and can't afford a full-time HR person.
Instead, they charged us $600 per month for nothing. The HR Generalist who was assigned to us didn't write our employee handbook and only directed us to self service websites for posting job ads and a self-service website for writing our own handbook. They even gave me a hard time for wanting to add my wife onto our 401k plan but put other, ineligible employees, on the plan. In fact they added her only after I notified them that I was discontinuing service with Paychex. What really bothers me now is after I closed my account, they are still charging me expensive service fees. I got a bill in the mail for $200 for administering a 401k plan holding $744. I'm absolutely disgusted with Paychex and would urge anyone considering Paychex to use ANY OTHER COMPANY.

I sent to different faxes on 2 different days and for some reason they decided to input the 2nd distribution that I faxed over 1st which therefore they made the check payable for the entire amount to one company. I wanted a distribution between 2 different accounts.
Now instead of getting my hard earned money the right way as I requested I will now be without it for who knows how long. And this company charges for the distribution. I'm sure they will charge me again. I have to wait to receive it them send in 2 forms filled out and signed. They are a complete joke. Several years ago I had a great experience with Paychex. When I started my second business I obviously had to use Paychex again from my previous experience but this time it was completely different in a very bad way. I was treated like my business didn’t matter to them. When I first started it took 1 1/2 months to get an agent assigned to me. This agent assigned wouldn’t return phone calls or emails for several days if at all. There were many discrepancies with issues to my account that never got attention. 5 months later this agent received a promotion and further wouldn’t handle any of my issues that still was needing attention. I then get put in a waiting list for 2 1/2 months to get another agent. Now L & I payments are late and no one would help sort these issues. I was forced to close my business and these issues have yet to be handled until today.
I received an email from Paychex stating that it was not their negligence because my L&I account wasn’t created until June. Well that’s because their agents don’t do their jobs. If you are considering using Paychex, Please Don’t shop elsewhere or be prepared to be neglected like me and many others have been. My husband and 400 of his coworkers lost their jobs last month. They were blindsided when the company decided to close its doors without notice. Being a really rough time for many, Paychex has only made it worse. They were awful when the company was running. There were several times they thought about not using Paychex. I wish they had followed through before closing their doors. Using the Paychex website and calling for assistance is like going back 30 years. The website functions and looks as if it were made in the early 90's. The many many employees we spoke with directly might seem to have an understanding of their own industry, but it becomes apparent quickly that is nowhere near the case. You will get varying answers to the same question. A number of former coworkers keep in contact through a LinkedIn group who are sharing their awful experiences with Paychex so I represent a good many.
Personally, 3.5 weeks and 7 phone calls later, they finally told us they don't do direct rollovers, only indirect which incurs extra charges and tax penalties. What we were trying to avoid and something easily done by a reputable company within a certain amount of time. We were told to fill out page 4 and return it. The second rep walked us through what we should put on page 4 because it's very confusing for a simple one page process. The entire rollover was rejected because he provided inaccurate info about our account. Even though he stated it was right in front of him.
We then filled it out according to what the third and fourth rep stated. This included being told we had to have the address where we directly wanted the check sent somewhere on that page. We simply had to write the same info on one line as was on the line above it. Simply putting an arrow wasn't good enough...but none of that was even necessary because they don't mail checks directly to a new retirement account. It could have been done online (but the page was only blank to never load on our end and no one would correct that issue for us to do anything online). Why there are even options to choose on page 4 makes no sense if they do not deal with direct rollovers. They only mail you the check in the end anyway. There is no point.
It took the 6th call to expedite this time sensitive matter and took several days after that to see any progress being made. That's when we discovered they were mailing it to us and ignoring our request to directly put it into another retirement account. Even then, we have yet to receive the check that we will need to forward to yet another company. We did a rollover 2.5 years ago between 2 other companies and it was smooth sailing with only a few days to be reflected. It's a joke of a company and I would worry if the company you work for picks them. If you are the one to pick an HR service, I am telling you to run, not walk, away from Paychex.

We recently switched from SurePayroll to Paychex to provide our payroll processing. Immediately, a significant mistake was made by a team member of Paychex wherein they entered the wrong pay rate and tax with holdings for one of our employees. When she found out about the mistake, it caused our employee to become so disgruntled, that they quit the job. She held our company responsible for the mistake of Paychex. When I contacted Paychex about the issue, their only resolve was to compensate us 4 months of services. This would seem like a decent compensation. However, this is actually the same amount of overpayment money we paid extra to the employee who quit. So, for their mistake, Paychex gives us compensation in the amount of basically nothing. Because of how they have handled this issue, I would definitely not recommend them to anyone.

Finally got through to another person and promised a call back from a supervisor, Sebastian in 15 minutes. That was at 4 pm; it is now 10:29 pm and no call. This is ridiculous as they do not care about their customers and they need to take responsibility for their actions!!!!

I have waited day after day to be lied by several different reps on when and where my distribution check is. My first check didn't arrive, and they made me wait 15 business days when it clearly wasn't coming. Request a new check and wait another 15 business days for it never to be sent. I counted on that money and have had several issues because of lies and promises given to me by Paychex. TERRIBLE! Eviction, late bills etc. Terrible customer service reps that tell the same canned response over and over.

We’ve had a Paychex FSA for three years now. It is absolutely not worth the hassle. They regularly deny claims for obviously medical charges (think co-pay at “Foot & Ankle Clinic” or “Emergency Room.”). We have to log in and check whether a claim has been denied and then hunt down receipts, upload them and then call to make sure a customer service representative has checked the upload (usually they have not). They put a hold on the card until you go through this tedious process. For us it happens in 1 out of 3 claims. I see that Paychex is considerately responding to all of these reviews. I would suggest your time is better spent improving your service since the sheer volume of these negative reviews speak to the quality of the customer experience. I know how to call customer service. My point is that it shouldn’t be this difficult.

I have 30+ years of accounting experience. Selecting Paychex for the company I currently work for was not my decision and I have no choice but to work with them. I have done payroll and benefits myself. It is much Much faster and more efficient to do it yourself than to deal with this company. They have great sales people but do not back up their product with fast or efficient help, particularly in the benefits department. Need an answer now? This is funny because you will be tied up on the phone or passing emails back and forth to those who do not speak on the phone to get an answer to something.
It could take only a few days to get an answer or it could take a week or more. Sad thing is that if you do your own payroll and benefits it is much less time consuming for you than it is to deal with this company. They drain your internal resources by taking up your time. Almost all of the people you speak to on the phone have never actually performed the function and therefore have extremely limited knowledge. To sum it up: This company is smoke and mirrors and its highest priority is selling more services. EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE for what little they actually do.

The service was to create paychecks for our employees - removing taxes and ensuring they were submitted to the government and the state. For two year this did not happen and now I am being penalized by the government & state for this. I get the run around from every person at this company that I've spoken to. I now have to obtain legal representation to get the fees paid. Stay far away from this company.
Hi Helen- I am so sorry to hear that this has been your experience, and would like the opportunity to see if I can be of any assistance. Please e-mail us at Client_Relations@paychex.com with your company name/ID, your name, and your phone number, and a member of our team will reach out to discuss in further detail.
