This may be one of the worst vendor experiences I have ever had. Multiple issues:

-Missed payroll twice in a row
-Promised 3 months of complimentary services which was not honored
-Opened 401k plan, created contributions in error and then charged $1500 to terminate plan
-Made an error in Q2 payroll taxes

    - When attempted to contact specialists for help, they cancelled the requested meetings, hung up, and did not return emails

Their operation seems incredibly sloppy if not borderline illegal given the mistakes they have made. Stay away.

I switched my payroll service to Paychex last October. Before signing the contract, I made it very clear that many of my employees use ITINs rather than Social Security numbers. I was specifically assured that this would not be a problem and that Paychex could process employees with ITINs. That turned out not to be true. Paychex repeatedly charged me monthly fees for “missing Social Security numbers,” along with additional fees that were never clearly explained. By the time everything was added together, my actual cost was nearly double the amount I had agreed to pay.

Paychex later agreed to partially reimburse these fees. However, a new invoice was then created containing charges that were equal to the promised reimbursement, effectively wiping it out. To make matters worse, I have now received a sales call from Paychex attempting to win back my business. Considering that the reimbursement issue remains unresolved, this felt like a slap in the face. The way this situation has been handled is unacceptable and deeply disappointing. Small businesses rely on payroll providers to be honest, transparent, and competent. My experience with Paychex was the opposite, and I would not recommend the company to other small-business owners.

I ran my own payroll as the only employee of my LLC. I spent 30 min/week on it and thought Paychex would be a good value trade. After working with their persistent salesperson we struck a deal for 6 months of free service in October. That's when the trouble started. They didn't understand how to transfer my previous payments/taxes forward and in November they paid my taxes twice. After spending a few hours to resolve the issue, they fixed it in December. In December I received a bill for $60, which they automatically withdrew from my account. Later I found out that they charge monthly fees if you don't run a payroll, this was not disclosed when I signed up.

In January I made a payroll on the 28th of the month, but I was again with another $60 fee. When I inquired they said I didn't make the payroll in time for the cutoff. I'm not sure what it matters because they don't transfer the money, I do. They refunded both charges after more emails back and forth. In February, they charged for doing my taxes with a bunch of random fees, $120 here $60 there, etc. The fees continued in April, which is when I pulled the plug. I thought I had signed up for a free account for 6 months, yet I was hit with over $730 in fees.

After spending hours and what seems like 20 emails, I was able to recover about $600 of those fees. The final straw is when they incorrectly charged my account a significant amount which caused me to be overdrawn. I closed my account in April and asked for my bank account to be disconnected, which they confirmed. In May I was hit with another $20 fee for which I am still waiting for an explanation. I logged in today and found that my bank account is still listed as active.

The frustrating part is that I must have talked to no fewer than 10 different support people, who all seem really nice and helpful, but nothing happens. I was assigned a permanent support person, who no longer works there. At the end of the day, I probably spend two or three times the amount of time correcting their issues than I spent doing it myself. I'm going to try ADP next and see how they do.

My company use Paychex and from day one and over the next two years, was terrible. We finally fired them and hired ADP. Much better as we grew by 150% during the past four years. My problem with Paychex is that they hold ERTC filers hostage to their exhorbitant fees. They lied about them up front, which I acted on and agreed to with their representative.

We were a PEO with Paychex. Some value, but at the end they charged me 22% termination fee on three quarters of filings using info they had in their system. So, to file three quarters with the IRS, using information already in their system, they charged me over $125,000 to file three forms with the IRS. This goes to ethics and larceny. If you call Paychex to talk to someone about it note they have no phone number for ERTC issues. Quite a joke and I have to say, a shitty operation with top down ethical problems. When they denied my appeal, the rep sent me the denial and closed her email with "Thank you for your partnership". I loved that ruse!

I have people that are calling me on vacation. Waiting for their deposits and now I have to tell them that it may not be deposited till Saturday. So I hope you get to enjoy your vacation. I'm starting to think they hold payroll in their own bank accounts. I think BlackRock did that. It's making money our interest. In what a wonderful company to keep charging you money. Constant employee turnover, meaning that you might have a different person assigned to your account every few months. New costs popping up all the time, including "adjustments" months after the fact, with no explanation. After selling my business, they continued to deduct fees from my bank account until I had my bank manually stop any further payments. Shady stuff! Stay far away from these jokers.

My experience with Paychex has been an absolute nightmare. Customer support is practically nonexistent, and what should have been a simple issue turned into months and months of pointless emails. Every response comes from a different person or department, and the answers constantly contradict each other. No one seems to take ownership or know what is actually happening.

They opened a PFML account on my behalf that I never needed, and even after the state confirmed it was closed, Paychex still hasn’t resolved it properly on their end. Meanwhile, I continue seeing unexplained extra charges with no straight answers — only generic responses and endless runaround. I genuinely do not understand how this company operates the way it does. Instead of helping businesses, they create unnecessary problems, waste enormous amounts of time, and leave customers stuck in bureaucratic chaos. At this point, I feel they should be reported to the Better Business Bureau.

After struggling for over 3 months, attending Webex after Webex meeting (where Paychex employees talked about me amongst themselves while I was on the meeting and were extremely condescending) and providing endless reports, we noticed in a training video that Paychex failed to "turn on" several icons on the mobile app to allow us to take meal breaks and transfer to jobs. But even after fixing that, the reports provided never came close to what we were sold. When we decided to cancel Time and Attendance, my emails we forwarded to person after person, all denying responsibility while they invoiced us for another month. Then when we were finally provided a link to cancel on line, we were told it would take another 30 days to be effective. So Paychex managed to charge us an additional $160.00.

They also refuse to refund us the set-up fee and monthly costs for a program that NEVER provided the information we would assured they would provide. But it's not just costs. Paychex employees do not act like business partners. They never actually provide support or training and never solve an issue. They just continually invite you to Webex meeting after Webex meeting that they record and every time you have any problems they just email you over a transcript of the meeting even if absolutely nothing was resolved.

My hope is that others take the time to research before choosing this company. Unfortunately, I relied on a recommendation and have been dealing with the consequences ever since. I was also told Paychex would be more affordable, but it’s clear that you get what you pay for. We recently transitioned away from Paychex after a very frustrating experience. During onboarding, critical items were mishandled, including issues with our workers’ compensation policy that created unnecessary complications and additional work on our end. Support was inconsistent, difficult to reach, and often unable to provide clear answers. Even simple tasks like running a bonus payroll required multiple calls and long hold times.

Billing was another major issue. After terminating our account, we continued to receive invoices related to post-termination adjustments. Most notably, we were sent a bill for $1.06 in sales tax and told to pay it and request a refund, rather than having it resolved internally. This felt inefficient and unnecessarily burdensome. Overall, the experience was disorganized and frustrating, especially compared to the level of service we expected. We have since moved back to ADP and have had a much smoother and more responsive experience. I would strongly encourage businesses to carefully evaluate their options before choosing Paychex.

Paychex created W2's for us with non-compliant (illegal) numbers for two years. Customer support seemed good until my CPA discovered their error... When asked to fix, the nightmare began:

      - Trying to charge me over $1,000 EXTRA to fix their illegal, non-compliant W2's
      - Won't cover IRS penalties and CPA refiling penalties as a result of their illegal, non-compliant W2's
      - 5 hours wasted on 4 phone calls
      - Promises of action, followed by silence

      - Unreachable during scheduled appointment

Attached screenshots show it all. Take your business elsewhere. I see that their robot will respond to this message pretending that they care and are going to help. It's a scam! If they cared, they would've already solved this properly.

They NEVER RESOLVED and have not even begun to work on this. This puts me in a terrible position. I would urge anyone NOT to do business with PAYCHEX UNLESS you want the IRS breathing down your neck.

Payroll departments, don't talk to Time and attendance, 401k departments and... They all seem to work in silos and trying to unwind messes they create can take up to a year and a half to resolve. PLEASE do not participate in their 401k program, that is worst of all! for a year and a half they were taking company associate fee's our of asset/employee accounts. Every time I reported the issue, they claimed it was fixed only for it to happen again. Our company was only 75 employees and now we are down to 40 and they still can't get it right. We are in the process of moving our 401k out and will be doing payroll next. Please save yourself the hassle.

Updated on 03/30/2026: After a week of more emails, more phone calls, and more waste of time and I still have received no help. I have repeatedly asked for someone knowledgeable to call me, but all I get is the same canned responses.

Original Review: If I could give it a zero star, I would. Absolutely horrible customer service. I submitted the correct information; Paychex erred in entering it. I have spent literally hours on the phone and so very many emails to explain, very simply, to them the error. Each time they write back that it has been corrected, but nothing has changed. I have a different agent every time. I don't believe they even read and understand the problem that I am simply stating. The error is in an employee's PTO, so it is reported incorrectly on his paycheck voucher. This is wrong and needs to be corrected, but I can get absolutely NO help by someone who knows how to fix it, or it seems, even understand the problem. There has got to be a better system than paychex. When the sell you on the system, they say there is a dedicated payroll specialist. I have NEVER been able to talk to that person, and it is a moving target as the "dedicated" specialist is always changing.

In sum, a nightmare from the start, Paychex comes in last with the worst reviews of all providers, according to A.I. and this makes perfect sense. RUN the other direction unless you like being put through H.E. double toothpicks. Five payrolls in (semi-monthly, so 2-1/2 month’s worth of Paychex), every single payroll had many, many, way too many errors, they don't even know how to calculate time a half. It takes a back and forth of 4 or 5 times before all of the errors are fixed. All afternoon in other words, and if the clock turns to time to get off work, they stop working to fix their errors and stop responding to the email conversation leaving payroll unfinished ⏰️ forcing you to call their after-hours emergency number, and the next payroll will have the same errors and more!!

Communication is horrible, employees will give you the run around instead of referring you to a supervisor when they don't know the answers which creates email strings miles long. All of the terrors, I mean errors never end up getting fixed and you'll be left working a half day on Saturdays figuring out and then cleaning up their mess with manual entries.

I was running the same payroll for years, perfectly every time. Instead of getting some of my time freed up, Paychex added to my load, very hard to get through a payroll now that was once a breeze, although time consuming with 50 employees. I had no control in the decision of which payroll company to use for outsourcing, and would never have chosen Paychex.

Pay great attention to A.I., Paychex comes in last. They are pathetic and have no business being in the payroll business. Paychex, you should get out of the payroll business and save the next poor souls from having an option to select you. Also, they will return your calls at 6:00 a.m. because they don't have a mechanism in place to even get the timezone part of their system straight.

Be sure to download and retain all journals, particularly the ones that have the mistakes on them as later they'll deny that there were any mistakes! Here's what A.I. has to say: While no third-party payroll service can guarantee absolute perfection due to potential human data-entry errors, several platforms are industry-recognized for high accuracy, automated tax compliance, and guarantees that reduce the likelihood of errors. Based on 2025-2026 reviews, here are the top services recognized for accuracy: Top Choices for Accuracy and Reliability.

Gusto (Best Overall for Small Business): Known for dependable, automated, full-service payroll that handles calculations and tax filings with high precision. OnPay (Best for Accuracy Guarantee): Renowned for its commitment to accuracy, offering a guarantee on tax filings and handling, making it a top choice for minimizing mistakes.

Rippling (Best for Automation): Designed to reduce human error through heavy automation and offers a 100% error-free guarantee. Wave Payroll (Best for Simple/Cheap Payroll): Guarantees its payroll software to be 100% accurate, with direct integration into its accounting software. ADP (Best for Comprehensive Support): Offers strong, reliable, "mistake-free" quality, particularly for businesses that need robust reporting and deep, attentive record-keeping. Deel (Best for Global/International): Uses in-house infrastructure rather than third parties to manage payroll, aimed at reducing errors and improving compliance in over 100 countries. Paychex.
