Their "help" desk people SUCK!!! I used their chat to try and fix a sign in issue today and both of the people I chatted with did not care and would not help me. The second employee just rudely told me he could not help, told me to contact my employer, and ended the chat. Both people were EXTREMELY SLOW about helping me and told me I was giving them the wrong info about signing in and security questions, which I was not. My employer solved the problem in two seconds. If you are stuck with Paychex and you have a problem go right to your HR person at work for help. You won't get any help from the Paychex staff. They couldn't care less.

Never again! Most stressful company to do payroll with! They never drafted the correct weekly fees which led to CONTINUAL emails and calls. I would eventually get a refund but had to constantly monitor their drafts and take days to email and get to the bottom of their mistakes. And taking money out of my business account wrongly could have led to overdrafts! Absolutely terrible company. Was not able to reach my representatives, only got a voicemail for my assigned reps. Then an email would pop up a day later with half the answer so I would have to put another call in. Issues would drag out for days that could have been solved with a simple phone call! Had employees working in three different states. They would suddenly drop the reporting but I didn’t find out until incorrect W2’s were issued. What a mess that was.
Finally, when I no longer had employees and shut the account down (their fees were still coming out incorrectly) and they auto drafted with zero notices like my account was a “free for all” for Paychex- they dropped all their responsibility by sending me a mile long email and left it up to me to figure out final state quarterly returns (required by law or fine and penalties are imposed) including my yearly federal 940 filing and payments! Got a crazy crash course hoping my forms, logins and filings were correct and being done correctly. Never again. They have to be the worse payroll company out there! Do yourself a favor and find a competent payroll provider that puts customer service in the forefront. This company has zero stars from me!

The clock in app is horrible, the job cost report are worst, they don't pay my workers comp as agreed, they file the RT6 reports with the state of Florida, they tied me in to a contract and I can’t leave unless paying a $4000 early termination. We have been customers for over 20 years and have slowly but surely watched the service of this company evaporate. Previously I received a call to report payroll on or around 9am every other week. Presently I never get a call from them. I have to call them and wait on hold for about an hour at times to get our payroll processed. Not sure who is working there but no one answers the phone. We are a small private MD office and answer our phones. I wait about an hour every other week just to pay our employees. Time is money and I'd like to send them a bill for wasting my time!
Thank you for your time and consideration.

I took the work of the representatives from this company. I use their payroll services and also workers compensation through them. Trust me, they are awful. You are promised all this help and you never get it. They take money out of my business account when not authorized. I canceled them. They continued to take money out, which lead to several overdraft fees for me.
I have emailed my assigned payroll person(s). Cindy **, was okay with response. Dianne ** is terrible. Several emails and never a response back. I call and am on hold for at least 20-30 minutes. Constantly screwing my payroll and taxes up. Always receiving emails for promotions, but never about my account. Do not use them, especially if you are a small business. I am moving on to a new company.

Customer service is beyond horrible. Communication is extremely poor, and I cannot believe how unprofessional this process has been. Canceling a 401(k) plan has been a nightmare. They charge $1,500 for plan termination and still manage to make repeated mistakes. The process drags on for months, and every time you reach out, you’re assigned to a new person who provides only partial or inconsistent information. After seven months, we discovered that the termination process had not even been started. This is completely unacceptable. Never again.

Paychex is non-compliant. They missed our Payroll date and did not pay our employees. We submitted our numbers on time and the account is funded but they did not pay employees. This now almost happened again - but we caught it. Now we are trying to speak to someone who can help us figure this out - and they don't exist.
They do not reach out to us or lend assistance. Our assigned Rep does not exist - he is unreachable. Does not answer Voicemails - does not answer emails. His manager does not either. Days and days of no service. If you call in, no one can help you but your rep who is non-responsive. They have absolutely 0 customer service, and, they will put your business in a potentially dangerous legal situation by not paying your employees on time. Do not use Paychex if your life depends on it.
I repeat - OUR ASSIGNED PAYROLL ASSISTANT is NON-RESPONSIVE FOR OVER 1 WEEK. His manager is non-responsive for over 1 week. They will respond to this, asking me to email "reviews" at Paychex - just watch. I will email that email - there will not be a response. Pathetic. What makes you think I will email your "review" email address if our assigned representative and his manager won't even speak to us? Give me a break.

I process payrolls for multiple clients and am extremely disappointed with the services provided. A dedicated specialist is assigned to each client. However, someone other than the specialist processes the payrolls, responds to emails and addresses multiple issues that arise. It was never like this in the past. Payrolls are not timely processed and direct deposit premium processing fees are assessed as a result. I can never reach the specialist on the phone, and the waiting time to speak with someone else takes 30 minutes on average. I would not recommend using its services.

I am writing a review of Paychex Payroll services. \I am sorely disappointed with their customer service and with the reliability. They neglected to file our company's state unemployment returns for the past 3 1/2 years. When I brought it to their attention, they took 7 months to get the returns submitted and now I am in the process of trying to find out if they are going to submit the payment or should the company submit payment directly. I have requested that they cover the penalty and interest charges since they were negligent in filing in a timely manner. Now I cannot get a response from our rep or anyone else in the company.
The services has been so awful that we are pulling payroll back in-house starting in 2026. If you are considering Paychex, please think again. They DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. And they don't care about their customers. For the amount that they charge, you would be better off having a local CPA firm handle your payroll and payroll filings.

I am writing to express my extreme disappointment with the recent changes to your business model. As a customer for over 15 years, I have always valued the service provided, but the new approach significantly diminishes the value placed on small businesses. The transition to using overseas service providers presents a major challenge. The staff members often lack a fundamental understanding of payroll processes and communication is severely hampered. While we are assigned a U.S. Payroll Specialist, Denis ** has consistently failed to return calls or emails. This lack of response means that our payroll process, which previously took only one minute, has become a difficult and frustrating experience every time.
It is extremely disappointing that this change has created such a significant disruption. We wish we could return to using our original payroll individual, who managed our needs efficiently through email without the need for calls, and demonstrated a more efficient cost model for Paychex. I urge you to reconsider this service model and ensure that small business owners receive the timely and knowledgeable support they deserve.

Caution, this app isn't made for the workers and getting in on time. This App is Admin nonsense. First and foremost, I think it's low key designed to get people fired. I work in a place that has gigabit internet, and with this app you wouldn't know it. You would figure an app whose primary function for the average worker is clocking in/out would make this priority but no. The app will load everything up BUT the buttons I need to clock in/out, even when I hit the 'clock in' button the buttons turn grey and it will be a few minutes before it accepts the punch in, but what's WILD about that is it accepts the punch in not from the time in which I pressed the button, but on the time the app decided to recognize it. IF I have to engage with this app, but in so doing I have to remember to play around its failures like come in early to give the app room to maybe serve its function, it's a broken tool full stop.
Suggestion (not that anyone cares): have a stripped-down initial menu, so once I input my password/face ID - have clock in/out and lunch in/out buttons load immediately - have those buttons directly tied into the phones clock, hold the very second I click the clock in/out button, then when the entire app finally decides it wants to be utilized it will check the time which I interacted with the button and apply that as my clock in/out time. IF you cared which you don't I'm sure this company is more than happy to add all kinds of useless stuff that will impede or have nothing to do with the primary time keeping agenda, at this rate I feel like they'll have Paychex Coupon rewards Clash of Clans game points so I can get .50 of a chili dog which I'll need since when I get fired because I'm relying on that app I won't have the money for a full priced chili dog. Thanks Paychex!

I have been with Paychex for approx. 20 years. In the last 6 months they have repeatedly failed to process my law firm's payroll as scheduled. In addition, they screwed up 401K withholding amounts. Needless to say this is highly disruptive for my employees. As a result of their errors, I have spent hours on the phone addressing these items. If you try to reach customer service, plan to spend an ordinate amount of time being shuffled between representatives who are unable to help and therefore need to transfer you to another representative. I’ve been a Paychex client for some time, and unfortunately, the experience has gone from frustrating to unacceptable. In the beginning, I could call and speak with any available agent, which helped when my assigned representative was unreachable. But over time, they’ve removed that option entirely. Now, I’m routed only to my assigned agent’s voicemail—who never returns my calls—and I have no way to speak with anyone else.
This issue has been ongoing, and it’s clear that Paychex does not take communication problems seriously. I feel completely disregarded as a client. There’s no transparency, no escalation path, and no accountability. It feels like once they’ve secured your business, you’re just a number—money pulled from your account without meaningful support.
To make matters worse, I referred five companies to Paychex and the process of receiving the referral fee has been a nightmare. Promises were made early on, but follow-through has been nonexistent. Of course, if I could give them 0 stars I would. Just like other clients they got me into the 401K Plan as well. I wished we could get together and bring this to a court against their practices. If you’re considering Paychex, I strongly urge you to look for another provider that offers similar features but actually values their clients and provides reliable customer service.

We moved our Co payroll from ADP to Paychex 3rd Qtr 2024. Paychex has FAILED to file quarterly reports and now the EDD is sending a Notice of Intent to Lien. We have been assessed thousands of dollars in penalties because of this. Last year upon receiving my first Notice, I worked with Paychex rep who said she would take care of it...long story short, I went through 6 reps (none of whom still work at Paychex - emails keep bouncing back) and signed 5 power of attorneys and it still isn't corrected.
Yesterday the Tax Dept (PAC) opened a case and closed it saying it was taken care of - ummmm not true. The Tax Dept conveniently doesn't have a phone number to call. They refer me to my Account Specialist who doesn't even have viewing access to info on my "tax case/resolution". I forwarded the tax dept emails and they bounced back.
Lack of follow up due to high turnover within the company and/or lack of caring, is costing me time, money and my sanity. Seriously - do not sign up for Paychex - consider ADP - I was lured over and now regret it. Emails bounce back - no phone numbers for key personnel and oh, one more thing - their main number goes to an offshore call center who also pass you around like a beach ball. BEWARE!

I'm writing this pointed more specifically at the Paychex Flex app. I hope that a rival company comes up and dethrones this company. If I were to ask anybody on the street with an above room temperature IQ and said, "If you have an app that is meant to help you punch in or out of your shift, lunch etc., what do you think is the most important thing that the app should focus on?"
Most would probably say punching in and out of a shift, this app takes a lunar year to log in, on gigabit internet, on cell service, name your ISP, it will load as slow as Fortnite would on a Game Boy Advance. Then if you manage to get it to load up in under 3 minutes instead of loading the only buttons that allow you to punch in and out, it loads everything else...
Listen, I use your app for punching in and out, not anything else. If I have to plan my lunches and work schedule, not on the times that I have to work but around how long this clunky app decides to hold me hostage, then the app is the problem... How about this, how about have the app log my phone time, allow me to punch in with some resource low buttons, then when I log in with my Face ID or password, it could ask, Did you mean to punch in? If I say yes, then it honors that punch in time so I don't have to wait for it to load coupons or whatever non important thing that isn't what the app wasn't designed for I would like to punch in and out quickly not be late because your app is spaghetti code nightmare, if you can't do the thing that the app is meant to do as a primary just turn the app into flappy bird holy crud.
I'm sorry for all caps but your app is garbage, and you need to hire people who will test this app and give you honest feed back not release garbage that screws people over, it's like if I loaded up youtube, and none of the videos would load up but a coupon for 2 hotdogs would load up and you had to wait 3 minutes for a video to load up it would make anyone angry.
Please have people who aren't devs, who aren't friends/family/ yes men, to test this stuff for you, have them test it in such a way that if they are more than 1 minute late, they are fired, they would tell you straight away that your app is meant to make people lose their jobs. So good job on whatever this app is supposed to be a clock-in and out app it surely is not.

I've had so many "We will call you back, or we will email you, or we will keep you updated" phone calls with them. Now it's October 3rd, I sent in the direct deposit form on Tuesday, it's Friday and of course, they don't have any updates and are saying maybe next week. I'm beyond mad. They are the worst company I've ever dealt with. They have cost me way more money than just this small distribution and the customer service is terrible. Don't put your money in this company.

Paychex does not have customer support for employees. Any employee technical issue (and I've experienced one every single time I've tried to simply log in to Paychex) is deferred to the employer. The entire purpose of a third party payroll company is to increase the efficiency of payroll. All Paychex does is give employers the added responsibility of working tech support for them.

Very disappointing experience.

I’ve been a Paychex payroll customer for over 7 years, and while the service has always been hit or miss, this latest experience was the final straw! Earlier this year, I received a call from a Paychex employee named Jorge **, who informed me that due to a new California law, I needed to offer my employees a 401(k) plan. I was hesitant — I knew my employees weren’t interested, and the pricing seemed high. I specifically asked: Can we cancel the plan later without any penalty or fee if my employees opt out? He clearly stated, Yes, no fees or penalties to cancel.
Fast forward a few months — just as expected, my employees didn’t want to participate. I called to cancel, and to my shock, I was told I owed over $1,800 to shut down something we never even used! When I asked to speak with the original salesperson (Jorge), I was told there was no record of who signed me up and that they couldn’t help me. Complete runaround.
This feels like a bait-and-switch tactic, plain and simple. Beyond this incident, the quality of service over the years has been wildly inconsistent. I’ve gone through multiple payroll specialists — some were great, while others were unresponsive, unprofessional, or just plain rude. Needless to say, I’m done with Paychex. I’ll be taking my business elsewhere and recommend others think twice before trusting them, especially with something as important as retirement plans or payroll.

Paychex has continually dropped the ball in the 1 year of service we were "provided." The first of the issues was the absentee HR "professional" we were provided who was supposed to be there for support and important company documentation/setup. MIA. Had to follow up on all tasks multiple times before actually being helped. After we cancelled the service and only used payroll services, whenever we needed to contact our "specialist" for assistance they were never available and we always had to wait on hold to speak to someone else.
In the time we used the service we spoke to our dedicated specialist MAYBE 5 times. When we finally cancelled the full account in April, we had to follow up with the Dedicated account manager multiple times just to get the ball rolling. After submitting all of the necessary documentation the account sat for months untouched. We thought it was cancelled out until June when we received a monthly billing statement for "Account maintenance" in this case we reached out AGAIN to ensure the account was cancelled.
No response for a MONTH, FINALLY "lost client services" reached out and began processing the cancellation, to which we had to fill out all of the cancellation forms a second time. However they continued billing our account every month and even up until the "confirmed cancel date". We have requested a refund on all billed "account maintenance fees" as the account was supposed to be close in April, it is now September, and after 3 months of back and forth and being ghosted by every rep, we are still not refunded the $$ that was charged. And no one at Paychex is returning calls or emails. Do NOT use their services!

Dealing with Paychex Flex has been extremely frustrating, as the customer service experience is often disappointing. Representatives tend to provide generic, scripted responses and rarely take the initiative to thoroughly investigate issues. Managers are frequently unavailable for direct communication, making it difficult to obtain timely solutions. Companies that value their employees should reconsider using Paychex as a service provider, especially since employees should not have to endure such an inadequate process during times of hardship.
The processing of Hardship requests can take anywhere from 15 to 30 days, and if the timeline is exceeded, customer service representatives typically offer no meaningful updates, merely instructing clients to wait an additional five business days. No company has driven me so insane as they have, they should be proud of their poor customer service and getting rid of them has been a horrible time. Their 401k plan will have a different person from across the world respond each time, they will NOT review anything that was said in earlier emails. If you have a question that cannot be answered in one email, you will need to repeat the entire email as well as additional clarification questions at the same time.
The "point of contact" will deny you as their responsibility, and take days to respond at least half the time. Do not expect them to go above and beyond, getting the minimum amount of work out of them is already past their own expectations of themselves. Once we we cancelled service due to selling the practice I requested the $58/mo view only option to still access reports/employee past paystubs/etc and they just completely closed the account. Closing an account isn’t straightforward—you can’t do it online and have to go through an operator who makes the process unnecessarily difficult. My monthly fee started at $56, then suddenly jumped to $80 with no clear explanation. Paychex is awful. I have been dealing with my invoices for the past 6 months due to being signed up for service that I never needed or wanted and this is was done by Alex **, office located in Bedford NH. I was basically tricked by him. He called me telling me my current plan was going to go up in price and he sent me an email telling me to sign a document to keep the same rate which was a completely lie.
My monthly rate when from 57 dollars to almost 400 dollars per month just for my payroll. I called customer service to help me to get back to my previous package and they had me sign a new documents which according to them was going to get me back to my previous. They had me sent over the same signed document multiple times and things are still the same. Alex had. It has been helping at all, Paychex customer service is useless they never help and transfer the call to other departments and I get nowhere. I was told they would refund me and I’m still being charged 400 monthly with no refund. If I could, I would give them 0 stars. Would not be recommend anyone anymore.

I switched to Paychex because I needed help with locality payments. I was looking at ADP also. They do offer this service, but overall the service just didn't fit my needs. There was no place on paychecks for memos which I also needed. My main complaints were the inconsistent help I received depending on who I spoke with and undisclosed charges. My payroll specialist was never available. I spoke with her one time in the three months I had Paychex services.
My biggest complaint however was the charges. I was supposed to have 90 days free, then due to misinformation on something I needed, I was given another 3 months of free services. I was charged monthly, had to request refunds, and 6 weeks after terminating services I am still getting bills. I would NEVER recommend these people and wish I had listened to ADP when they told me "Good Luck" when I told them I had gone with Paychex. Super bad experience with Paychex. Also, they terminate your access to your account within 30 days of termination. I still have access to all of my Gusto information, which was a very good company, but I switched to Quickbooks in order to have everything in one system.

This is without a doubt the worst payroll company. The customer service is truly horrible. You are assigned a "dedicated representative" which is useless because it is impossible to reach them. Every representative I have ever spoken to there was incredibly unhelpful and rude. They all act annoyed when you ask them for assistance with anything (which is their job after all). They make mistakes often and when you call in, you will get bounced around to multiple different departments and told to email multiple different people. Even still, it will take you weeks, sometimes months, and multiple rounds of following up to get any issue resolved, even for simple things that could take other companies 5 minutes. To top it off, they are expensive. Over double the price we now pay with a different provider. It is unbelievable how bad this company is, save yourself some money and a headache, avoid.

I’m absolutely furious—and rightfully so. A sales rep reached out over a years ago and tried to scare me by claiming my small business would face state fines if I didn’t sign up for a retirement plan immediately. I only have two employees, meaning I wasn’t required to enroll until December 31, 2025. I later discovered there was no legal basis for their threat. Yet, they coerced me into paying $160/month, for a service nobody is even using—and it’ll be required years from now. Every month, I’ve been paying for nothing. The employees explicitly opted not to participate, so my employer-based “plan” has been completely wasted. And because it was sold as an installment plan, I can’t cancel without jumping through hoops. I’m out over a year of fees for a plan I never needed—right now.
What I Want You to Know. I was misled into purchasing unnecessary services through fear, not facts. I’ve been paying pure overhead for more than a year with no participation or benefit. I’m effectively trapped in a contract because of the installment model they insisted on. I had to figure out that—legally—they had no right to scare me into joining early. I’ve been working with this payroll provider for about ten years, but after experiencing this deceptive sales tactic, I’ve lost trust and plan to find a new provider.

We are a small, family-owned business that signed on with Oasis nearly 30 years ago. We remained loyal even after they were acquired by Paychex, trusting that our long history would continue to be valued. Unfortunately, the opposite has happened. Since the transition to Paychex, customer service has become almost unbearable. It’s now difficult to reach anyone who can answer a question, let alone resolve an issue. We are passed from person to person, with little follow-through and no sense of urgency.
On top of that, our costs have increased dramatically, with no clear justification. Fees are layered and confusing, and there is no transparency in how our taxes and charges are calculated. We now strongly suspect we are being overcharged, particularly for SUTA, and Paychex has made no effort to provide clarity or support. For a company of their size, this level of opacity feels intentional.
What’s most frustrating is that after decades of partnership, we are treated like an account number, not a client. There has been no benefit to staying with Paychex—just rising costs, worsening service, and a complete lack of accountability. We feel taken advantage of, and we’re now in the process of moving to another provider. If you’re a small business, we strongly urge you to look elsewhere.

I have had the absolute worst experience with Paychex! They didn't file the necessary quarterly reports even when I asked over and over again for them to file. I was charged penalties and fees for the reports they didn't file and they never reimbursed me. I used them for 3 years and they still couldn't file a multi work site report for me nor could they produce the report I needed to in order for me to accurately file that report. When I closed my account they sent me invoices that I had to call to pay since I couldn't go online and just pay online. After I paid the last invoice that I showed that I owed they sent me to collections and even after I provided detailed support of the payment I made showing the ACH receipt and all they still said I owed for another invoice they never sent me. When I asked the collection agency for the invoice that they said I still owed on they claimed that was me not willing to settle the bill.
All I wanted was to verify what they claimed I owed when I felt I had paid everything. After I paid the last bill they never bothered calling me either, just sent me to collections. Not only did they not do their job that I paid them to do then they sent me to collections over an invoice they never sent me and refused to send again. Do yourself a favor and do not use this company unless you want a constant headache and to pay bills you do not owe.

I have been with Paychex for just under a year now and I would say 10/10 don't recommend! They are salespersons and during the implementation process will really sell you on their customer service and how well this system will work for your business. The implementation team disappears after you are set up and issues arise. Let me tell you what Paychex is great at, collecting your admin fees, upping your cost without your approval, not providing what they promise, not able to properly enter job costing job sites, and most never return a phone call or an email, unless it's an auto reply they are out of the office.....AGAIN! I'm pretty sure I'll be looking to just cut ties because they have made it clear my small business means NOTHING to them. So I guess my money would be better spent elsewhere. No supervisors will call me back and funny the district managers don't have phone numbers listed to where you can reach them. Terrible customer service!

Not one good thing to say about this company other than run if you can. Customer service is basically nonexistent. Continual mistakes across the board. From failing to add or remove employees properly, to getting sick hours or just simple hours incorrect. Even using computer systems they can not seem to do simple math. New "specialists" assigned every month and not one of them reliable or reachable. We've had our payroll submitted to the "Wrong department" by said specialists, delaying our employees pay checks. We've received payroll with checks missing. Multiple online platforms make things confusing and all of them have major issues. And despite continual errors that we are expected to catch and fix for them, the prices continue to rise.

The health insurance brokers used by Paychex are worthless in time of need. They are excellent at setting up insurance policies and collecting commissions. When their help is needed they are nowhere to be found. My small business went under after 3 years. My Paychex health insurance broker said I had until Wed Mar 12 to avoid being charged for April. I sent an email and left a voicemail. She had decided to take that afternoon off and Allstate billed me anyway. She got that charge reversed. Now I am charged again in April. She sent one email, which Allstate ignored. Then she told me it was my problem. I went to her boss and her boss agreed it is my problem. They provided no numbers to call until I harassed them by email. I am still working to get the April charge reversed and the health insurance policy cancelled.

Once they sell a service/ product: payroll, 401K employer pooled plan, HR, you begin to receive relentless phone calls for an upsell to another service. You can tell them you’re not ready but they persist. Once you accept the service there is no assistance after. Don’t try to cancel! They make it so difficult for you, I’m assuming in the hopes you forget and they keep charging. The sales rep you work with initially, tells you they can assist with anything but stops responding to calls and text if you’re having trouble with a service. Overall, expect to get “used car salesman” treatment with this company. Promise everything and deliver on nothing.

Deceptive Practices and Hidden Fees – Avoid Paychex. Our experience with Paychex has been incredibly frustrating and disappointing. During the onboarding process, their sales rep assured us that we could activate the 401(k) plan when we were ready—a key factor in our decision to sign up. But that turned out to be a complete lie. Without any approval or formal confirmation from us, Paychex activated the 401(k) plan on their own, and then started charging us fees immediately. When we confronted them about it, they deflected responsibility and cited confusing fine print that was never explained during the sales process.
To make matters worse, when we tried to cancel the service, they hit us with outrageous penalties and made the offboarding process intentionally difficult and unclear. It’s a classic bait-and-switch tactic—promise one thing to close the deal, then do the opposite once you’re locked in. If you value transparency, honesty, and control over your business services, stay away from Paychex. Their deceptive sales tactics and hidden fees make them one of the worst service providers we’ve worked with.

They hit our account with $500-$600 per payroll which means adding in manual checks, costs us around $10,000-$15,000 in Paychex fees all at once pulled out of account without us knowing plus amendment fees(which I’m fine with). Getting someone to help solve issue they just say it’s their policy even if we downgrade to a cheaper Paychex account. I’m absolutely livid with Paychex, the company handling my 401k, for forcing me to jump through invasive hoops just to access my own money. After logging in with my username, password, and providing my routing and account details to initiate a withdrawal, they hit me with an outrageous demand: I now have to send a copy of my government ID, a selfie, and re-confirm my bank info through a third-party processor.
This is a blatant privacy violation. They’re essentially demanding that I hand over everything an identity thief would need to ruin my life—after I already verified my identity. The irony? They claimed their third-party system didn’t recognize my phone number (the same one they just texted me on!) and refused to send a simple verification code. Instead, they’re holding my withdrawal hostage unless I comply with their reckless demands. Forcing customers to submit selfies for God-knows-what AI database is unacceptable. We shouldn’t have to sacrifice our privacy and security just to access our hard-earned money. Paychex needs to be held accountable for this predatory behavior. STOP putting customers at risk!
I live in Florida, and they are telling me that I have to travel all the way to New York to process my withdrawal if I don't take a selfie and provide my government IDs to a third-party process. This is going too far. They are basically trying to force everyone into their AI database for some reason and we shouldn't allow them to start this violation of privacy.

So many fees. They are constantly adding fees, changing fees, charging more fees. We terminated our account with them almost 3 months ago and they are still charging us for services every two weeks. I had to do a stop payment through my bank because I am simply tired of the regular phone calls to get our money refunded, only to have more fees charged two weeks later. They have constant employee turn over - which is very telling. In the year and a half we were with them, we went through 3 account specialists. These specialists never answer their direct line, and rarely answer emails so you don't get any real individualized attention beyond them getting you to sign up. We just found out they never forwarded on our 4th quarter taxes when we terminated with them so now the state is assessing late penalties and interest and I've been trying to resolve that with Paychex for over 3 weeks with no progress.
I ended up paying the taxes out of my own pocket - even though Paychex already deducted that money from employee's pay checks and is holding onto it somewhere - just so I could stop the bleeding with the penalties. If I had it to do over again I would never have signed up with them. I absolutely do not recommend. You will spend more time on the phone trying to get refunds for fees wrongfully taken from your account than it was ever worth in savings for their product. Horribly run company.

I am very disappointed with Paychex. Despite stressing exactly what our company required for reporting, journals, and job costing, there were several weeks I received my payroll late because none of the details we discussed prior to going live was taken care of in the backend. The process was painful and very frustrating. My journal entries took nearly three months to get correct and now I have to go in and manually correct all of the journals from the beginning of the year, nearly nine weeks, up to the time they got them correct.
For several months we have been trying to get certified payroll information to provide our customer, and we are being told they cannot provide the reporting we need. This was not discussed in the onboarding process and apparently, we had to be set up a certain way to be able to have these reports. One would think that Paychex, as a payroll professional, would consider this something important to discuss.
Paychex is a big company; however, they do not have the wherewithal one would expect from a big company. Moving to Paychex has cost me a lot of time fixing journal errors, going back and forth with them trying to get, what I would consider standard reports, and a tarnished relationship with our client because we cannot provide certified reporting. We had lengthy conversations with sales prior to switching over to Paychex. Unfortunately, what sales promises is not what is delivered.

I have been a customer of Paychex since 2017 and have been happy until the past several months when suddenly things have become chaotic. I don't know if it is a change in policy or the newest payroll specialist I was assigned in 9/2024. I have not been able to communicate with an actual person since that time; some emails are clearly being answered by AI. I have an over $8000.00 discrepancy I have enquired about and receive cursory answers that don't address the issue. Now they have processed payroll this month for the wrong amount.
Through all of this there has been no way I can see of actually speaking with a manager or any other person. The phone numbers I call go nowhere. I suspect there has been a huge change in this company as this is a departure from the experience I have had in the past when the assigned payroll specialist communicated directly and promptly and mistakes were not made. I am beyond frustrated and will likely need to seek legal redress.

This is absolutely the MOST incompetent group of people I ever attempted to work with. Please do not make the mistake of starting the onboarding process with them. They will get your banking information and take money out of your account EVEN IF YOU CANCELLED THE CONTRACT AND NEVER EVEN RAN ONE PAYROLL WITH THEM! They are horrendous. I was promised that a supervisor would call me today to straighten everything out and, of course, no one called. They will cause you 100 times more headaches than just figuring out how to do payroll on your own. Don't do it.

This may be the single, most incompetent and frustrating company I have ever worked with personally or professionally. At this point, I am entirely unsure how much of the incompetence is accidental and how much is intentional just to get dollars out of me by confusing me and never, ever letting me actually close my account. After two long, soul-sucking years with Paychex, seemingly incapable of submitting and processing our taxes properly for payroll (and causing us thousands of extra dollars to remediate) I called it quits.
Knowing how deeply incompetent Paychex is, I sent a message about cancelling our account in July to get the ball rolling. By December 01st, I had sent clear instructions that our account was to be closed after 12/31 and payroll should be processed through 12/31. They stopped payroll on 12/27, leaving our employee without a check.
When I called to have taken care of, the reopened my account, processed a check for the remaining days in 2024 they had missed, and then subsequently left my account open and started to send me invoices for 2025 and payroll checks to go to my employee. We have obviously cashed none of these given this is not our payroll provider. When I say this is the tip of the iceberg with Payroll's inability to adequately conduct a payroll business in any way, I sincerely mean it. This company should be investigated by the BBB. I'm not sure how companies are allowed to operate in such a manner.

Adding to the pile of 1 star reviews. We contacted Paychex in 2022 and asked if they could help us with payroll for our Small business that is a Sole Proprietorship. They quickly onboarded us and we started paying them a monthly fee to run payroll for us. When we were preparing to file our taxes we were informed that Sole Proprietorships CANNOT have payroll for the owners. The tens of thousands of dollars they sent to IRS was unavailable to us for our 1040. We had to come up with our entire tax burden and the resulting penalties from our retirement fund. When we contacted Paychex they argued with us about the eligibility, they declined any responsibility for signing up a company for payroll that doesn't qualify. They eventually filed form 941x for us requesting refunds.
Today we learned that the IRS doesnt accept 941x forms that are signed by a random attorney at Paychex and the form MUST be signed by the business owner. Sadly Paychex never sent us a copy of the 941x so we are unable to resubmit them... As payroll experts they should have known we didnt qualify and guided us to alternatives. But that would have prevented the sales person from getting a commission so they close the deal whether it's legal or not. Then to fail to understand the requirements for a 941x form is simple incompetence. I used to live in Rochester near the home office, If I was there today I would go in person to show my dissatisfaction. But that's not possible.

I'd leave 0 stars if I could. I have had the worst customer service of my life with Paychex, and every month they somehow seem to care less. Each time I have an issue, I have to send multiple, multiple emails to my rep and still rarely receive a response. I was charged an insane fee because of a mistake my rep made on my account. Even after acknowledging the mistake was Paychex's fault and assuring me the money would be refunded, it took 8 months to get the money back. I sent well over 10 emails requesting the refund. I went through my rep, his manager, everyone said the money would be in my account in 3-5 days each time I asked. Again, it took 8 months to finally get my money back.
To make matters worse, they tried to hide the full refund amount from me, and I only found out they actually owed me more money when I had an auditor find a gap in my accounting. I then had to go through the same process again, which took months and months and months to get resolved. I finally decided to switch payroll solutions, and informed Paychex to terminate my account. I received a confirmation email. Somehow, they never ignored the termination request and continued processing payroll even after my account was terminated! This has been an absolute nightmare. I've never worked with a company that is so terrible at customer service and has genuinely zero interest in making it better.

Extremely Frustrating Experience with Paychex. I had a very disappointing experience with Paychex. Signing up was straightforward, but that's where the positives end. After signing up, I was bombarded with calls from their sales department. Whenever I declined their offers, the calls kept coming, and they would even press for reasons why I wasn't interested. To make matters worse, they changed my email without my consent, which caused me to miss important messages. They then proceeded to deduct money from my account without my approval. It feels like they prey on unsuspecting clients from trusted banks, luring you in with the bank's reputation.
Customer service is a nightmare. After weeks of waiting to speak with someone, I was constantly shuffled from one representative to another with no resolution in sight. The same excuses were repeated, and it seemed like they were always "busy" or needed to "get back to me." Overall, I find Paychex to be a greedy company that seems more interested in robbing people of their hard-earned money than in providing any real service. I would not recommend them to anyone.

Anytime I called, it was a run around of being transferred from person to person having to reexplain and reconfirm information. When you finally get a contact person, they are responsive at first, then stop. It took reaching out to management to get the claim processed. Employers should really test filing death claims (with and without beneficiaries) before committing to and implementing Paychex. I wouldn't even rate this company as a 1-star... I HAD to in order to leave a comment. Where do I begin:
1. Benefits. As an HR professional, I can't speak to anyone about the insurance rates. I can't speak to anyone about claims experience. I can't speak to anyone about lowering the rates my employees get as premiums. I have no say whatsoever in how my employees are impacted.
2. They just turn "free functions" on willy-nilly without telling me how it works or if it's going to even be a benefit to my employees. They don't communicate to the company at all... Everything is reactive...no proaction. And when they do have the RARE occasions of communicating, they send emails to ex-employees!
3. If an employee terminates, they leave that employee setup as an admin. Even after that ex-employee terminated 3 years ago!
4. They can't customize their system. For example, you can't make up reason codes for terminations. Why can't it say "Involuntary...failed drug screen" or anything else? I have to use the "Other" option and then enter a description. That's fine except that the description doesn't show on any of the headcount reports...so it does NO good!
5. As the company administrator, I can't update an employee's phone number or email address. I'm told the employee has to. However, the employee isn't able to log in because their old email or old phone number doesn't work or they don't have access to it. So how can the employee log in when there's a security code emailed or texted to them and they can't access it!?
6. Any person employed by my company has 3 years worth of stubs and tax documents. However, terminated employees, WHO CAN LOG IN, do not have access to them. Why?
7. They change their background screening process and doesn't tell me. No emails or phone calls...nothing. So when I ask about it, I get 14 pages of just screen shots saying "here's how you do it." Um...where's the training? Oh here...watch this webinar (which is designed for new clients...not existing clients who are being forced to change).
8. I can't setup taxes. As the company, I should be able to setup a tax for a school levy and set it up on an employee. Nope. You have to email someone to set it up. In the meantime, you've already processed payroll and now missed a tax deduction on an employee.
9. I'm just getting started and running out of space to write.

But, they have tried to charge me 4x for a single payroll in the past.
We used to be in their 401K program for an initiation cost of $2500.00 plus monthly maintenance fees. The 401K program that the salesperson sold to us, was Not what we were enrolled in. We were committed to the 'Boiler Template' 401K, which did not fit our company's needs. After many headaches, and no response from the salesperson, we finally dropped their 401K program. Make sure you have a written program and it meets your needs before paying for this. Overall, we should have stayed with ADP. The few dollars saved is not worth the headache. Now we're going to have change back. I would guess that Paychex' drive for expansion of their services is their demise.

My employer uses this "service" even though they consistently don't get our payroll out on time. About every two months it's late. We finally get paid after our boss spends a day or two on the phone with Paychex. Paychex also offers an IRA program. I cannot recommend this either, not even to my worst enemy. I have one, it's a nightmare. Number one, your weekly contributions aren't credited until the following week. This enables Paychex to collect interest on all that money for the week. Number two, I took out a loan against my IRA. The payments towards that automatically come out of my paycheck every week through Paychex. Paychex said I missed a payment.
Again, payments are automatic. Also, EVERY one of my pay stubs shows a payment made. A week ago they finally told me their payroll computer doesn't communicate well with their retirement computer. NOT MY FAULT! The Paychex Flex website employees log on to still say I'm missing a payment even though repeated phone calls have been made by me and my employer. They admit it's their fault and still won't fix it! If you want angry employees and don't want to wonder why they quit and went somewhere else, use Paychex. They suck in every which way.

There are so many departments and they have no idea what the other departments are doing. Concerns don't get addressed, just bumped to another department (assuming anyone actually responds). Every pay period had errors or late direct deposits or tax mistakes. I still have not been able to resolve tax issues from 2 years ago - just keep getting pushed from one rep to another and is obvious no one knows what they are doing.
When I tried to leave last year they promised if I switched to their PEO platform I would have a wonderful and personable experience. Only 1 of my many dedicated reps seemed competent and knowledgeable, the rest were just as disappointing as I'd had horrible experiences with before. I spent more time (hours+) dealing with payroll issues through paychex every week than if I'd just run payroll myself. Most of the time spent was trying to track down someone with any knowledge of my account. Even had a rep respond that it's not his department but offered no suggestion of who to contact. Their errors and omissions have cost me 1000s over the past several years that I cannot recoup - because no one knows how to resolve the issues. It's clear it's either a severe management issue or overall lack of training by Paychex. Either way they are certainly NOT a company to trust your employees with! Good riddance.

Updated on 02/26/2025: My response: No thank you. We ended up getting rid of your service. If you look at your reviews you can find business owners in hot water with the IRS because of your systems glitches. You guys stole money from me by messing up hours. I feel no obligation to help you make your inferior product functional.
Original Review: Before purchasing this software look at how many paid ads push the organic search results far from your view. There is a lot of money being spent on SEO to hide what the public is saying. If you take a look at overall ratings (Google 2.4 stars) (Trust pilot 1.1 stars) (Consumer Affairs 2.7 stars) (Yelp 1.7 stars) you will get an idea of how horrible it is to enter a partnership with this business. The first 5 search results are not quality urls that are clearly black hat seo tactics. It's the only positive review copy you can find, and it's paid for (they will say sponsored next to them). If you check the actual reviews on trust pilot and other reputable review sites there are tons of business owners talking about things that Paychex did, sometimes even causing the IRS to get involved! They have it set up to where you can not get help with the technical issues they have.
They make you port every complaint through your hr department (meaning the only person who can get that kind of tech support is probably a 6 figure employee). That alone says a lot about their business model. In my opinion businesses who don't provide a service that is helpful should not be around. Do your research and I'm sure you will make the right choice. Payroll is a pain, but it's even more of a pain when it constantly messes up what the actual business numbers are supposed to be.

Paychex has got to be the worse payroll company I've ever experienced. I've referred many of my clients to them for payroll and 90% of them are unhappy and frustrated. In addition to payroll services, you have to pay separately for them to pay payroll taxes with the IRS and State. I never heard of anything more absurd. Many of my clients left Paychex with multiple notices from NYS Unemployment for failure to pay unemployment taxes.
They also have a tactic where if you leave them, it is impossible to get any prior year reports!!! We recently contacted a representative name Doris ** (who lied to me and said her name was Vee); requesting for the NYS-45 with the employee attachments and she was CLUELESS. She had no idea what those forms are. When ask if we can be transferred to someone else that can help, she refuses and proceeded to send us forms that we didn't request. When ask to speak to a supervisor, she threw a fit about how we were yelling at her on the phone and hung up!! She needs to be fired!! Very unprofessional.

My experience with Paychex has been nothing short of a nightmare. As a business owner, I rely heavily on efficient and reliable payroll services, but this company has consistently failed to meet even the most basic expectations. The customer service is abysmal. Reaching a representative takes an eternity, and when you finally get through, the support is unhelpful. They seem entirely uninterested in resolving issues or answering questions, which is incredibly frustrating when dealing with something as critical as payroll.
The most alarming issue, however, has been their consistent failure to make timely tax payments. We've faced numerous instances where our taxes were paid late, resulting in penalties and fines. This level of incompetence is unacceptable. Despite multiple complaints and requests for resolution, the problem persists, showing a complete lack of accountability on their part. I would strongly advise any business owner to avoid using their services. There are plenty of other payroll companies out there that are far more competent and trustworthy. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere.

If there is a possibility zero or negative stars, I would have given it. But here we are, they'd get 1 star and I'll explain why. I own a small business that was supposed to open shop in September 2023, and had reached out to Paychex to help with payroll. It turns out that I had issues with constructions and wasn't able to open until May 2024. I had reached out to paychex to put my account on hold. But they didn't, so they keep taking money from my account.
They then later said, they would only be able to deactivate the account. I asked them to deactivate the account and asked for a refund of all the monies they took from me. They refunded the money for maybe two months, but they still keep taking money from my account in subsequent months. All this while I have been talking to different people at Paychex and they keep passing me around.
When I was finally able to start running my business, I decided not to use Paychex anymore because of their obviously fraudulent behavior. Had to go with ADP. Just today, I had to walk into my bank so they can help stop Paychex from stealing money from my account. The bank said they've done that and now I'll be moving ahead with a claim, to retrieve all the monies stolen from me by Paychex.
It looks like no one is running this company, or that those running it and their employees have no idea what they're doing. Or maybe they are deliberately just fraudulent. I don't know how this company has not been sued in a class action.Im pretty confident it's a matter of time. And I'll be waiting to cash-out. In the meantime, I'm retaining my own counsel and they'll pay every penny they stole from me with interest as well as my attorney fees.
Well, just for the good of the public, I'd like to share the names and contacts of a few people I have interacted with at Paychex and they have all been playing games. Make sure you avoid these people like a plague. Because of Google's review guidelines, I will not be able to share full names, phone numbers, email addresses, or other forms of contact information. But if you're talking to the following people at Paychex, just know that they won't help you. They operate like
Krista,Gianna,
Ben,
Alex.
I interacted with more than these people, but I'm not able to determine their first names from their email addresses. In summary, AVOID PAYCHEX. THEY'RE LIKE A CURSE TO YOUR BUSINESS.

I'm a small company with only 4 employees, I thought Paychex would be Ideal. However after they paid two employees who were fired a year earlier, one with a paper check which I caught and tore it up. The other one went direct deposit, to a employee that hasn't worked for me in over 14 months. The pay was for overtime and he never worked any time. I complained and demanded Paychex put that money back into my account. They said that's my problem and it was up to me to get that money back from a terminated employee. I disagree with that I didn't do it they did why should I have to seek repayment when they caused the issue not once but twice.
I told Paychex supervisors, managers and anyone else who would listen, they all said someone would get back to me and no one ever did. So I told them last year in June they got until the end of the year to pay me back or I will not be using Paychex after the first of the year, I said do not bill me for services and do not ask me for payroll. They called me every two weeks I said where is my money and I said no payroll until you pay me. So they Billed me every month for the last 5 months when I said do not bill me I am not using our services. I call them I get hung up on, no one calls me back, no one answers emails.
Then a employee has the state come after me for sick pay not being listed anywhere on his pay stubb and cost me $2000.00 in legal fees. When I told Paychex what they did to me the rep was changed and the new rep had no clue and said OH they will fix that. I said no payroll until you pay me . Now they owe me the direct deposit they made into a terminated employee's account, plus the monthy "variable" fees they debits out of my account the last 5 months. I cannot understand how they can charge me for payroll when I have done none and told them last year that I am not doing any payroll untill they pay me back.
When I asked about the variable fees they has some story and told me they were non refundable. NON refundable, they were not supposed to charge me and they have the nerve to tell me they are non refundable. They owe me the direct deposit they made to the terminated employee, they owe me the last 5 months in fees and they owe me for the legal fees I had defending myself when they as a professional payroll company failed to follow the state of California payroll requirements sick pay accrual. That is a breach on contract. I'm out $4000, they hide, they don't return calls, they don't respond to emails. Maybe they will respond to a lawsuit. It does seem they have a few of them, after googling "paychex lawsuits" there are litterally dozens of them. I hope they read this and do something before I add one more to the heap.

I found myself consistently facing terrible communication issues. Their business is split by department and every time an answer is needed there are a minimum of 10 email addresses or 10 potential people that might answer you issue. Most of the time the answer is “we can’t help you. Call this other number.”
My company chose to return to Paychex against my recommendation. The handover was horrific. 6 months into the handoff and I have employees still receiving communication of dropped coverage, not being able to sign up for benefits, and a team of 10 Paychex employees who have not once been concerned about our terrible support. Mistakes we made on a regular basis on simple payroll. I was constantly assigned a new 'payroll specialist' and would have to then reteach them how to enter my payroll. They claimed to have an 'easy online payroll entry feature' that wasn't easy and nobody trained us how to use. Further, after we moved to ADP they continued to charge us fees for doing absolutely nothing and when confronted said that the proper paperwork for cancelling wasn't completed. Terrible from the top down. Unfortunate that they have the market share that they do, as they make it hard on small businesses to function and aren't cheap. If you are considering payroll companies please do yourself and employees a favor and avoid this one.

There are a lot of problems with Paychex (which is the biggest understatement ever stated and if you purchase them you will find out); however, I think a lot of it stems from the fact that they have an amalgamation of different software and have no clue how it works or what it does. When we signed onto Paychex we were told that they had a vendor solution that would have access to... they did not. Sales reportedly said they did to then have support say they didn’t know what was occurring. This is a common theme, a lot of promises and no delivery at all once paid. Not even an attempt.
I have been a customer for over two years and they still do not have a way for me to enter my employees without having to go through them. I have asked for support numerous times, and they are not able to explain why. Paychex does not handle anything to do with workers comp or with anything outside the bare minimum of what they can do to keep you from leaving. They are less than helpful with any question about taxes they take out and will always say “we don’t know why... talk to an accountant”. I assumed if I was paying someone to handle this, they would be able to understand what they were being paid for, and good luck with their vaporware Quickbooks plugin that doesn't work.
Payroll never runs on time or without errors. All my employees hate Paychex because they are never consistent on paying the people they are paid to. In addition, there is no way for an employee to enter their ACH information, which is a super common feature OF ALL OTHER PLATFORMS. They have no idea what they are doing with W2’s and they have no idea of what consent for digital W2 is even though they wrote an article about it. They will always send paychecks to the wrong address. I have never had them send them to the employee's address and they always send them to a random address with very little explanation of why they do that.
As I write this, they have messed up payroll again, after two years of doing it and if I didn’t have 401k through them I would have left but I am hostage to them. On top of that, their user permission system is a joke of confusing check boxes that their support team doesn't even fully understand and their team takes months to setup the system incorrectly. If you are thinking about buying them, please for the love of god don’t.

I joined Paychex in July of 2023. At that time, I was told to submit my prior quarterly tax returns so that my W-2 at the end of the year would be correct. Correct My "dedicated representative" sent an email confirmation that all documents had been imported to their system and that I was all set. Further, the platform that I spent the text agents want, also confirmed that the representative had accessed my documents. In December, I received a completely incorrect W-2 and began reaching out to my representative. The same representative that assured me that my documents were imported, now claimed that she never received the documents.
I have spent the last 2 months sending emails and making phone calls that go weeks unanswered. I asked for and received another representative who also fails to return my calls, along with good supervisors. Ultimately, today I was told that the documents that Paychex received for a second time last month, are not sufficient to process the W-2 correctly and the originals sent in July are still unaccounted for. The sheer disregard, incompetence and lack of customer service is absolutely atrocious.

I have told every person I know not to use the company for payroll or retirement services. Currently, to leave, I am to pay $1,500 and so I am being held hostage by this terrible company. Nearly every employee is either incompetent or worthless. This has been horrific, from start to finish. My payrolls were almost always wrong. The customer service is horrible. There is no management. I have (finally) received an outpouring of apologies and Paychex has righted their wrongs.
Original Review: Feb. 12, 2024
1. I was incorrectly onboarded and told by my onboarding specialist Conor ** to cancel tax payments from my previous payroll company, as Paychex was going to do that. After being summoned to COURT due to non-payment, I discovered Paychex failed to pay my Virginia payroll taxes for Q3 2023.
2. Due to #1, I have made several phone calls and emails which have largely gone either unanswered or met with "we will have to figure out who is responsible." I don't care who is responsible. I was met with an unexpected late payment bill due to your incompetence from the Virginia Employment commission of approximately $86.
3. Inconsistent payroll times. I have been told anywhere from 4 pm to 8 pm is the due time for payroll submission. I hadn't been charged a late fee until I processed it at 8 pm for our most recent processing, to which I was told via email that I would accrue a $70 late fee. When I pushed back, I was told that I would receive a credit for $70. I just received a bill with a $29.68 discount, which does not cover the $156 I am owed.
4. Still no response about my cancelling services or fees accrued due to Paychex's incompetence and failure to respond. I have never received such poor customer service, and warn all those who are considering your services.
5. While boasting 24/7 customer service, phone calls go to voicemail every day, and emails go to a "pool" - this means that there is no corresponding between myself and a single representative. I have to explain my issue every time. As a result, nothing ever gets solved.
These are just the highlights of an otherwise sub-par, lackluster experience that I wish upon no other small business. I have spent countless hours trying to ensure my employees get paid, that I don't get ripped off as a company, and I don't end up in court or worse due to someone else's incompetence. Of note, I attempted to respond to reviews@paychex.com as indicated in many of the one-star reviews on this site, however it got kicked back stating undeliverable.

Our small family business was offered a flat $33/month service all inclusive by their sales rep. At the end of the year we were charged a surprise over $100 for W2 and year end reports processing. Talking to our rep led to no resolution. Talking to the manager resulted in one time credit only. The following year in 2023 they started charging $85/month until we noticed and contacted them. The new rep. (they always change) promised to look into it; in trying to follow up the answer was "I applied for an adjustment", but after several attempts to follow up she just stopped answering, no credit was issued. Eventually we quit them and received a call from their "retention specialist" who could not help with the past charges, but offered future discounts. They keep trying to process ACH payments 2 months after quitting, good we notified our bank to ignore the attempts. What a mess, would never expect this from a US based company.

Get a new Rep, keeps happening. DO NOT sign up for any 401K service. They do not disclose any fees up front, tell you "you can cancel anytime". Send e-sign docs that you can't read. My CPA sent the dates they needed to refund which I forwarded to Khance and she said we didn’t try until recently to stop their service. Even though that is not true, but shouldn’t the standard be you don’t charge for services you didn’t provide? I have the dates they debited and my CPA can vouch for providing these services. We were left to figure it out on our own, and our employees are furious as their paychecks are continually wrong. Everything was supposed to be smoothly transferred over, and never was. Weeks went by as we asked why the PTO had not been updated, and we had no "go to" person to fix it.
Our new employee asked how he had accumulated 3,443.610 hours of PTO when he was only with us for a few months??? This is just one instance, but again, no one to ask as we now have 4 different contacts and have no idea who is supposed to do what. As a business owner, we hire companies like this to make our job easier, but they have made my life a living Hell! Simply said, the service with Paychex has been absolutely abysmal. Benefits administration was an absolute nightmare, and oversights left some people in our company in financially difficult and emotionally exhausting positions. The customer service is horrendous - one example is that in the middle of open enrollment prep, my specialist left (I was informed quite literally only hours before she left) and it was weeks before I was assigned a new specialist, leaving me in an unbelievably chaotic position at a very challenging time.
At one point, I asked Paychex not to file a report for us, and they did anyway. I'm told one thing by one person and a different thing by someone else. I never know who to contact for what, including the fact that I spent over a month trying to figure out what steps we needed to take to leave Paychex, instead I was passed around from person to person. Paychex was exhausting to work with - they clearly have pretty high turnover based on how many people were assigned to our company over the past year - which adds to the challenges of contacting people for help. Save yourself the headaches - do not use Paychex.

Payroll representatives change on you more often than you think of! The changes are never communicated in advance, and you are notified just via an autoreply at the time of payroll processing. The autoreplies state that someone else will take care of your payroll, but then your employee found themselves not paid because in reality no one would taka care of. Then you call to deal with another rep just added to your account to process with delay, and if you are lucky for that time you move on. Next payroll comes, the current rep makes mistakes and you have to call in to fix it. Another rep is not assigned and the cycle goes on and on and on.
Payroll has been processed with an error rate of 40 to 50% resulting in half of our workforce overpaid or underpaid. Hours wasted in calling the general line and dealing with general representatives because your assigned ones are just incompetent, and their supervisors are nowhere to be found and no one answers you for days. Naming the most recent ones George C and supervisor Nikki N. It is an absolute disaster! Based on our experience with Paychex and my opinion, you should run away from this company!

I am compelled to share my recent encounter with Paychex, and regrettably, it has been an exceptionally unsatisfactory experience. Over the course of a week, I invested over an hour on the phone attempting to address a persistent issue, engaging in a frustrating cycle of being transferred from one representative to another. Despite reaching out to 8 different individuals, and even escalating the matter by sending over 12 emails (with a copy to Manager Ja'net **), my efforts have yielded no conclusive answers. This extensive back-and-forth has left me with lingering, unanswered questions and employee unpaid for now 2 weeks.
My frustration reached its peak when, amidst explaining my ongoing concerns, I was abruptly disconnected by the representative. This incident not only disheartened me but also prompted me to seriously question the standard of service provided by Paychex. The prolonged duration and complexity involved in obtaining answers have prompted me to consider terminating my account with Paychex and seeking services from an alternative company. The persistent challenges in reaching a resolution, marked by multiple contacts and numerous transfers, have only intensified my disappointment.
While acknowledging the intricacies of addressing customer concerns, the recent service I encountered fell significantly short of my expectations for fair and transparent communication. This experience has left me doubting the overall reliability and customer-centric approach of Paychex. I sincerely hope that Paychex takes this feedback seriously and endeavors to enhance its customer service standards. Timely attention to such issues is paramount in maintaining a positive customer relationship.

If I can give them less than one star, I will! Customer service is horrible! I own a small business and have used PAYCHEX for a couple of months, but after several payroll mistakes, I have decided to determine them! We called and emailed more than five times to confirm our account was closed. Four weeks after our account was closed, we received an email from someone stating that we run payroll and we owe taxes! I got highly concerned because how can that be possible if we have been using another payroll provider?
I spoke with someone, and they stated that they could do nothing because, under my login information, someone ran payroll for my employees! I panicked because that meant two different payroll providers paid my employees, but how could that be possible? I checked with my employees, and none of them did! After a month, I got hit with a $178 fee for TAXES, which, again, we haven't used PAYCHEX for over three months! I contacted the 1800 number, and they sent me an email to communicate with **, Amanda, where she sent me evidence that payroll was run under my name on check date 09/01/2023.
I provided her with several evidence demonstrations that we have been using another payroll provider. Her response to $178.00 was that my business would continue to be in the collection and that it was not their fault that I ran payroll twice, which, again, after determining their account, I am never logging in! She even recommended I file a police report instead of just bringing the balance to 0.0 and apologizing for the misunderstanding. I will understand thousands of dollars, but as a small company, why would you not understand after several evidence that we have been using another company? Please don't use them! PAYCHEX is going to be in court soon!

I was referred to this company by my accountant. The accountant indicated the company made payroll “easy and reliable.” Since joining PayChex I had a terrible start. They had a new rep every other month and I couldn’t get a hold of anyone. Finally, one person became my rep for almost a year. He was great and promised to fix my issues and he did. I am on my honeymoon as I write this review. I noticed a large withdrawal on my business account. Turns out PayChex just decided to pay my employees at the beginning of the month instead of the 15th. This happened once before, and I noticed an email saying I had a new rep. I never tamper with my account. It is the same amount every month and recalibrate at the end of the year. This is twice now once before without the reliable rep.
Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. I will be terminating my services when I get back from my honeymoon. The hour I waited on the phone to ask why this happened and was quickly told this was not her department and then hung up on makes me want to figure out how to file a class action against this company. I will give them one opportunity to keep my business. You can pay your employees two weeks early and then the president of the company can sit on hold and listen to elevator music for an hour. Then I will let him talk to explain the problem. Once he completes his or her explanation I will tell the individual not my department and disconnect the phone line. Somehow I think I will not get this offer.

I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding a concerning and unauthorized incident involving Paychex and my personal 401(k) funds. I believe that this matter requires immediate attention and resolution. I was made aware of a highly distressing situation where Paychex, the company entrusted with managing my employer's payroll and retirement, utilized my personal 401(k) funds to cover expenses related to my employer's plan. This action occurred without my knowledge, consent, or any form of prior notification. I was not provided with any instructions or notifications to transfer my 401(k) funds to a different account or to take any action to protect my savings. Paychex withdrew funds directly from my 401(k) account for months to cover expenses related to the canceled plan.
This has resulted in the depletion of nearly all of my retirement savings and subjected me to tax penalties and fees due to the unapproved distribution of my funds. When I reached out to Paychex they informed me that there was still money left in the account and that the rest was going to be taken out in order to cover the billing for the plan. A plan that has been cancelled by my employer.
Paychex is literally stealing from their customers without their knowledge. This is criminal. It would not surprise me if this company goes under investigation and is charged with fraud. I'm sure I'm not the only person this has happened to. If you are an employer considering a payroll and HR solutions company, please go with anyone but Paychex. It will only bring you headaches and grief. Thank you for reading, Jessie **.

The company provides absolutely no assistance when it comes to some of the most critical issues. They make costly errors. Having an issue with one of the states not getting required reports. For almost a year, I was sending Paychex communication and notices from that state. Nothing was resolved. Miscalculated some reports for California. We got Health benefits through Paychex (BIG mistake!)--going back and forth regarding eligibility for one of the employees who's supposed to be eligible for the benefits for the last two months. They can't figure out why the employee does not show up on eligibility list. Pushing me there and here, sent me lists of items I am supposed to review and make sure they are entered correctly in the system--all there! NEVER can get a hold of my supposedly representative. Just extremely frustrating. Will be looking to switch, for sure. Just sick and tired of their incompetence and complete indifference.

This company is nothing but a headache. Haven't used them in about 2 years and still getting bit in the **. This company does not have integrity nor do they care about who they're able to swindle. They will tell you it is a pay as you go contract but it's not. They overcharge and never refund you. They straight thieves and garbage company to work for. Nicolette ** is the worse sales person and her boss. They completely lied and overcharged. Don't ever sign up for workman's comp thru them either. They use Markel and it's a garbage company. Learn a lot of life lessons having to deal with this company.

I would like to preface that I understand that the day I called was the Friday of Labor Day weekend so I understand that possibly a few people were out of office that day. However, the way I was treated absolutely ridiculous and I wish I had the name of every employee who hung up on me because they didn't want to help. To start off one of the employees that I help wanted to get access into his Paychex account to view his paystubs. I initially called to get some help on where to find the access information as I didn't see it show up on the employee overview. I then called Paychex the first time to get a hold of someone and see if I just didn't have the permissions to access this and get that fixed and have the invite sent out from their side in the meantime. I was on hold for 50 minutes! Which is ridiculous already to begin with, but I stayed on the phone because I needed to get this taken care of.
When a representative finally connected to me I explained the situation and then within minutes she hung up on me and sent me back to the phone menu! There was no warning or notice. I thought maybe it was a mistake so I called again. And after another ridiculous wait time I was connected and the employee hung up on me again. I called multiple times and was on the phone on hold for HOURS. I called my direct representative, nothing. I called other departments to transfer me over to someone and got no help whatsoever. I eventually gave up.
Then today I was on hold for almost 40 minutes and the representative I spoke to had no idea what I talking about. They are supposed to know the difference between the business's bank account and an employee's business account. I didn't realize I had to teach the representative that I was calling for assistance on basic information they should know.
Not only that the question I asked was can we have two separate BUSINESS Bank Accounts to submit payroll. I was told this was in no way possible. I asked why? Why on Earth would a large company like Paychex not have simple coding to add multiple bank accounts that I can choose to draw payroll from? I also was on hold with your online chatbot who by the way was fantastic and his name was Jake. He deserves a raise or a bonus. He was able to assist me today but your employee's need better training in order to help customers. I shouldn't have to explain to them basic information they should already know

I left my job at an employer using Paychex as its insurance broker. My employer did not correctly enroll into COBRA so there was a delay in benefits being able to be enrolled in. It took multiple emails and calls to get updates. Finally mid-August It was escalated to a COBRA benefits supervisor who told me it could be expedited and paid for over the phone. I filled out paperwork and sent it back via email and called and made the payments for July, August, and September-- over 6100 in total. I gave it a few days and when I still hadn't heard back I reached out and again was told it was being validated and as soon as it went to the carrier it would be active.
Meanwhile, I have an injured back and am in excruciating pain as well as having type 1 diabetes without access to insulin pump supplies, and I can't send rescue meds to my child's school to stop seizures in an emergency because they are 3k out of pocket. I followed up with emails, phone calls, I called the insurance carrier and begged for assistance. I asked for the ombudsman and was told no one existed in that role at Paychex. The rep I spoke with today told me it went to the expediting team this am and it shouldn't be much longer--- but it has already been over 3 months and nothing has moved. On the insurance side they are telling me it's as simple as a phone call or pushing a button but paychex states legally it's much more complex as that. It seems to be more of the same bait and switch and empty promises from Paychex. I do not know who to turn to- no one is taking responsibility or taking care of this situation.

First my employer is the client BUT IT'S MY MONEY NOT BEING DIRECT DEPOSITED TO MY ACCOUNT. I'm a very disgruntled employee ...Paychex inc. so far has lowered my wage. YES lowered my wage for 3 payroll cycles.. My boss caught this and tried for weeks to get them to change the amount back. NOW they are not direct depositing my pay to my bank! And my Boss has contacted them and they said they would fix it. That was days ago.. All other staff got their money. WHY IS THIS COMPANY TARGETING ME????

We are a small business and hired Paychex to help us with HR. We used them for a few months and then decided to downsize our business and no longer needed their services. We canceled services in March--in writing. They confirmed that we were cancelling services. They then charged us again in April. We contacted them. They apologized and refunded our payment. They assured us they were closing our account. Again, they charged us in May. We went through the same correspondence. I assumed that was the end of it. My bookkeeper found two more charges in July. We had been charged for June and again in July. I reached out to them and demanded that they ensure our account is closed and return our money. They returned our money and assured us again that the account was closed. This time, I took it one step further and contacted our bank. I put a stop payment on the account. It is now early September.
We received a call from Paychex billing that they could not process our payment for August and we have an overdue balance with them. They could not process our payment because I put a stop payment on them--because our account was cancelled in writing in March. This is been such an ABSOLUTE nightmare that I am writing this review as a warning to anyone and everyone who considers hiring Paychex.

We switched to benefits through Paychex in July. From the very start it has been a nightmare! No assistance setting everything up, the rep showed us a PowerPoint that helped none and then was MIA which resulted in our benefits starting a month later than planned. Submitting claims has been terrible. I have had to call them at least 1 time a week every week for assistance and it’s the luck of the draw if you get someone who actually knows what they are talking about. I have never had this many problems. NEVER AGAIN.
