About GMC

GMC is a division of General Motors that currently produces trucks, vans and SUVs. Founded in 1900 as the Grabowsky Motor Company, GMC became one of GM's first acquisitions in 1909.

GMC vehicles are often positioned as more upscale than their Chevrolet counterparts. While not quite considered a luxury brand, GMC often provides a mix of durability, versatility and premium amenities.

Pros
  • Considered more high-end than Chevrolet
  • Above-average warranty on certified pre-owned vehicles
  • Higher-end trims rival luxury brands
Cons
  • Generally not considered as high-end as Cadillac
  • Industry-standard warranty on new vehicles
  • Middling reputation for reliability

Our editor’s take

GMC has carved out a niche for itself as an upmarket truck/SUV brand for those wanting more premium features than mainstream models without the costs of a pure luxury marque. If you’re looking for an upscale SUV or pickup, it’s worth considering. However, its limited lineup could be seen as a pro or con, depending on your needs.

If you want something more affordable, you might want to check out equivalent Chevy models. And if you want the full luxury version of their shared platforms, look to Cadillac.

GMC overview

GMC is one of several car companies owned by General Motors, including Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac. These brands often share designs and components, so you can sometimes find different versions of similar vehicles rebadged across all four lineups.

You might also see GMC referred to as a “premium” brand. That means it straddles the line between being a luxury brand (like Cadillac or BMW) and a non-luxury brand (like Chevy or Ford).

GMC models

For the 2024 model year, GMC only offers trucks, vans and SUVs, so you’ll have to look elsewhere if you’re shopping for a sedan or hatchback. Multiple models are available as commercial or passenger vehicles and in heavy- or light-duty configurations.

The Hummer EV (available as a pickup or SUV) is a noteworthy break from the rest of GMC’s lineup because it’s the company’s only electric vehicle at the time of publishing. (The Sierra EV has yet to be officially released.)

GMC cost

GMC’s highly variable trim levels give you a wide range of options when it comes to how much you want to pay for your new car. See the table below for a comparison of each model’s base and top-tier MSRPs (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price).

*MSRPs do not include add-ons or customizations

GMC warranty

GMC offers the industry standard warranty package on its new vehicles, which includes:

That’s the same as what you’ll get from most other car manufacturers, but it’s also the absolute least you’ll get from any major car manufacturer. And several brands offer considerably more.

» MORE: Compare new car warranties

GMC does slightly better when it comes to its certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles. CPO GMCs come with

  • 1 year or 12,000 miles of additional bumper-to-bumper coverage
  • 1 year or 40,000 miles of additional powertrain coverage

The average CPO warranty only adds the one year/12,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage, and the extra powertrain protection GMC provides can cover the cost of fixing some of your car’s most expensive components.

GMC’s best-selling model in the U.S. is the Sierra pickup, according to GoodCarBadCar.

Are GMCs reliable?

Generally speaking, GMCs aren’t known for being more reliable than the average car. GMC ranked 18th out of 29 automakers in J.D. Power’s 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study and 24th out of 30 brands in Consumer Reports’ 2023 predicted reliability rankings.

We don’t have a sufficient number of consumer reviews to provide our own assessment of GMC’s reliability at the time of publishing, but we will enhance this article with insights from GMC owners once enough data is available.

Are GMCs expensive to maintain?

According to RepairPal data from 2019, GMCs are more expensive to maintain and repair than the industry-average vehicle.

Is an extended warranty worth it on a GMC?

Whether an extended warranty is worth the cost or not depends on a number of personal factors, but our investigation into GMC extended warranties showed that plans had the potential to be worth the cost — if you got a good deal.

Less than 80,000 miles ignition coils went bad. $2200 to fix. This vehicle has been maintained by the dealership since we purchased it. We have also had problems with the computer system of the car and the dealership had to call GM directly and have an engineer help them repair the issue.

I purchased a brand-new 2025 GMC Sierra at the beginning of September with zero miles on it. About two weeks after purchasing the truck, I noticed the tires had dry rot on the sides. I contacted the dealership immediately, and they dismissed the issue, saying there was “nothing there” and tried to wipe it off with a wet towel. After getting nowhere, I contacted GMC directly to report the problem and ask for support, but they were unresponsive. I eventually contacted a Firestone dealership, and they confirmed the tires were in fact dry rotted and replaced them. However, I had to pay the installation fee of about $190 out of my own pocket.

I reached back out to GMC, requesting reimbursement since the tires should never have been in this condition on a brand-new vehicle. GMC refused, stating the dealership said it was “normal wear and tear” despite the vehicle only having zero miles at purchase and under 2,000 miles when the issue was reported. Common sense states that a vehicle with 0 miles should not have dry-rotted tires (while the tread remained in perfect condition).

I am extremely disappointed with both GMC and the dealership in Bunkie, Louisiana. I expected better customer service and accountability, and this has left a very bad impression after purchasing a brand-new vehicle. 1 star was generous for both GMC & the Chevy dealership in Bunkie, Louisiana. My Resolution Specialist Echo, was NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. This was a horrible experience with GMC, the dealership, and the Resolution Specialist. The pictures were taken at the Firestone dealership prior to replacement.

Purchased a new 2024 Acadia. Now have just under 18,000 miles. In the first year I had to take it in for headlights, brake lights, sunroof seal, brakes, tire sensor malfunction and coolant leak. The dealership said they couldn’t help me without proof because the car wasn’t throwing codes when I brought it in for some of those issues. I had to take videos and photos for them to believe me. They assured me they were ordering parts. That never happened. Now with the coolant leak my car had to be towed to be repaired due to a faulty hose or valve, it’s hard to get clear communication. They’ve had my car for 3 weeks now.

I’ve been in a rental they are paying for but I can’t let my dog in the car and I need to drive her to appointments. No one will communicate with me and the customer care rep says she’ll call me at times that work better for my schedule and then doesn’t. She randomly calls me at night when I’m caring for my children. When I say I need them to either give me my car or pay the detail fee for the dog in the rental and she says no. This company sucks at customer care. I have been very patient but I’m over it now. I tried uploading photos but it won’t allow me too.

Long story short (over 10 months of fighting - Calling nearly every day), we owned a 2017 suburban premier. My wife and two small children were driving to soccer practice when my wife hit a pot hole. This is a common occurrence that happens to most of us on a semi-regular basis. However, what is not common, when my wife hit the pot hole, a portion of the 7 total airbags deployed. Burning my wife's arm and scaring my children to death. Luckily the injuries were only minor. Now, we were instructed by our insurance agent (because the car is now "totaled" basically) to call GMC and they should have a program to assist with clear malfunctions like this. We were told that there have been numerous other cases where airbags have malfunctioned and manufacturers are normally open to assisting in these cases.

We contacted GMC were told to take the car to a certain dealership and they would investigate and more than likely cover the repair (because of the facts presented). Additionally, while we were waiting (for nearly two months) they would cover a rental up to a certain dollar amount per day. We had numerous car experts review our car and the conditions that led to the airbags being deployed and they all determined that the car malfunctioned however the "Specialist" sent specifically from GMC (about a month later) stated the car operated correctly and no action was necessary on behalf of GMC. This was shocking but then GMC stated we owed for the Rental on top of the diagnosis. We had email chains, phone records etc. stating that there was no payment required for the rental. However, the dealership withdrew $1,200+ dollars from our account on the direction of GMC leadership.

We fought them for the next 8 months and we did finally get reimbursed but if we did not have the perseverance to keep fighting them, we would have had a totally lost vehicle and our bank account would have been an additional $1,200 lighter. So at the end of the story, we were only left with a "totaled" suburban and a new perspective on GMC and their products. Their products clearly malfunction and GMC is unphased. I would not recommend a GMC product to anyone. We now have a Ford Expedition Max and could not be happier (Honestly, bias aside, the Ford Expedition is far superior to the Suburban in numerous ways).

I recently purchased my first GM vehicle, a 2025 Buick Investa while living in St. Louis. Unfortunately, I've had continuous issues with the passenger side door speaker, which has been cutting in and out and producing a lot of static. When I took it to the dealership, they acknowledged it as a known issue and assured me they could fix it. However, just two weeks later, the problem returned, along with issues with the vent knob, which broke after I attempted to adjust it. I visited several dealerships, Houston TX only to be told at the last minute that they didn't have the necessary parts, despite having made appointments. This has been incredibly inconvenient. Today, I drove over an hour after leaving work early to get my car fixed, North 1 Houston TX only to find out that the dealership's internet was down for two hours and they hadn't notified any of the customers with appointments.

The customer service has been disappointing, both from the local dealers and from representatives in St. Louis. Having previously owned BMWs and Fiats, I expected much better service. This experience has left a sour taste in my mouth regarding GM, and I am now determined to share my experience with others. At this point, I just want to sell the car and move on from GM products entirely. If I'm spending my money, I expect to be treated with the utmost respect and care, as if I were spending a significant amount. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience with GM.

I bought a 2017 GMC 6.2 new, kept it serviced better than factory recommends, it had a lifter noise. Had to replace cam, all lifters, etc. Parts alone were over 2,000.00. Labor was as bad, it's a 4x4. I've owned GM pickups since the 70s and would not drive anything else, I worked at Chevrolet dealer in the 70s now I will never buy another one, if I ever buy another truck it will either be a Dodge Hemi, or a Toyota pickup. I never thought I would say that but they have designed a problem child.

I own a GMC 2022 Sierra Denali that has been sitting in the dealership parking lot for 5 months now. The engine light came on and it was diagnosed with a transmission issue that they can not seem to acquire the part to repair it. They have no idea of any kind of timeline for the part and are telling me that I could be waiting a year for the repair. Meanwhile, I have contacted corporate and they are not offering me any more information or hope for the repair. I have not been offered a loaner that I can use and am at the mercy of GMC. I will never, ever buy another GMC vehicle of any kind again. The company is the worst I have ever dealt with on any issue that I have ever had with a product. As long as they receive money from the government to keep the company running, they do not need to worry about making their customers whole or happy.

I currently own 4 GM vehicles and 10 over the years. Never again. Letter to GM. I am writing to formally express my deep dissatisfaction with my recent experience as a GMC customer. Over the years, I have been a loyal supporter of the brand, having owned no fewer than ten GMC vehicles. In total, I have owned over twenty different vehicles, including motorcycles, and I can confidently say that my recent experience with this Buick has been the worst I have ever encountered with any automotive company.

At just 1,700 miles, the turbo failed, rendering the vehicle inoperable and I am told it will be months before it is fixed as the parts are on back order. Apparently, this is happening to a lot of their cars from what they are saying. This is simply unacceptable for a brand that promotes reliability and quality. What has compounded my frustration is the lack of support and accountability from GMC. Despite repeated attempts to contact your customer service department, I have received no meaningful assistance or follow-up. I was told I would receive a callback within 72 hours—this did not happen. I had to initiate another call, only to be told again that someone would return my call, which again did not happen. When I called a third time, the representative I spoke with was extremely rude and unprofessional.

Additionally, the dealership has been unhelpful in resolving the issue. The complete absence of communication, compassion, and customer care from GMC has been disappointing and disheartening. Based on this experience, I have lost all confidence in your company’s commitment to its customers. I can assure you that neither I nor my family will ever purchase another GMC vehicle. Furthermore, I will not hesitate to share my experience with others and strongly advise them to consider alternative brands that demonstrate greater accountability and respect for their customers.

Purchased a new 2025 GMC Canyon. Day 4, engine light came on. Took it to local dealer (different from purchase dealership), and they told me that the entire engine may need to be rebuilt. This may take 4 - 6 weeks. That is roughly three times as long as I have had the vehicle. They did not have a "courtesy" car so I had to Uber it to Enterprise, rent a car on my dime, and wait. We will see how long this takes.
