Life Alert was founded in 1987, making it one of the first personal emergency response companies in the United States. The company’s systems have a base hub and a help button that can be worn around the neck on a pendant or wristband. Life Alert advertises that its pendants have a 10-year battery life and don't require charging.     Life Alert keeps calling our home despite the many times (I can't even count) I sat and listened to their automated message and pushed the appropriate button to no longer receive calls. They don't even have the respect to call you with a human being. When I got a human being on to ask for at least the sixth time to stop calling, they said okay and then hung up on me without even a courteous good bye. I can't believe where common courtesy has gone these days! If I get one more call, I will definitely want an attorney to contact me.     Don't be fooled by thinking since this company has been in business for years, it can be trusted and is your best choice. There are lots of alert devices available. You have a choice. Don't choose this one. After contacting someone at Life Alert for information on their system, I was persuaded by one of their representatives. I received several calls, even at my workplace. After speaking with this representative, I decided to try the Life Alert System for my mother based on the information I was given. Her health concerns were mainly to do with her limited mobility. She was always afraid of falling.

    After getting the information and assurance from this representative that if for any reason (and was told this several times by everyone I talked with at Life Alert) that the Life Alert system did not meet my mother's needs or she would not use it, I could simply return it and they would discontinue service. This was even verified by the last person I spoke with when they verified information for the delivery. (Once they went over the contract, again saying not to worry about it. The contract is for 3 years but for any reason, we will discontinue this contract and you can return the equipment.)

    Don't fall into the same trap I did. They will not stand by their word. You will be stuck. If your parent refuses to use it, if she has problems hearing anyone on the system to help her, or any other reason, you are trapped. Good luck dealing with them.

    My father was talked into getting the Life Alert system from the local senior center. He couldn't afford the system but Life Alert sold it anyway. Interestingly, they use a non-retractable direct withdrawal. He had surgery a few months ago and has been in a rehab center full time ever since. I called Life Alert to see about discontinuing his service or making changes to the billing because he's not home and because of the hospital bills, their withdrawals are causing bounce fees every month. I called to try to work something out but they are holding to the fact they have a three-year contract and no early releases are possible except death or over six month in the home. I can send the units back but include a check for the remaining two and a half years left on the contract. Really, something to steal from the poor and elderly. I don't recommend these slimy crooks to anyone.

    Life Alert is not affiliated with any senior centers; however, such organizations that cater to the elderly recommend services, such as Life Alert, when someone asks about getting extra help.

    Life Alert does not force, intimidate, or manipulate anyone into using our service. Your father must have felt he needed our services since he signed up on his own freewill after being well informed via a brochure and a phone call. Case in point, your dad had fallen in December.

    When you called us at the end of January to inform us your dad was in rehab with 24 hour care and may be transferred to long term care we advised you that all we needed to cancel your father’s agreement without any penalty was to fax or mail a verification letter to us. We did not receive anything from you.

    You then called a month later to inform us your father may be in rehap for 6 months. We offered to suspend payments for two months, or the agreement could be cancelled with no cost or penalties and all we needed was a fax verification of long term in facility. Again, we received nothing from you.

    Life Alert has been very accommodating to you; and to falsely accuse us of stealing from the poor and elderly is unfair and unwarranted when we have given you options and solutions to your situation.

    We wish your father a speedy recovery.
