About Life Alert
Life Alert was founded in 1987, making it one of the first personal emergency response companies in the United States. The company’s systems have a base hub and a help button that can be worn around the neck on a pendant or wristband. Life Alert advertises that its pendants have a 10-year battery life and don't require charging. Monitoring centers are UL-certified and have the Five Diamond designation from The Monitoring Association.

I fell during a routine walk in our apartment. I tried to rise but could not so I pressed the button on my Life Alert pendant and did not have to wait long. Thank you.

I lost electrical power and without power I lose oxygen, which I require 24/7. Life Alert responded immediately and sent police and medical help as needed. I will be eternally grateful.

I fell in the backyard near the patio. The Life Alert button was pushed and help was on the way in a matter of seconds. It was wonderful that we were able to communicate the entire time, as we live in a rural Mississippi County. We’ll never be without Life Alert, it’s worth every penny!

My husband fell and could not get up. We called Life Alert using his call button. A policeman came first then the paramedics. They did a small exam to make sure he was alert and not injured. The whole thing took 15 minutes or so. They were very efficient. The woman who responded to our call was courteous and stayed with us till the policeman came.

A few weeks ago I fell in my bathroom. It was a reaction to my regular medication. The woman from Life Alert stayed on the phone until the police and EMTs came. She asked how I was feeling and gave me peace of mind. I’m very glad I have Life Alert.

My mom experienced a fall, she’s 89 years old, and she pressed her Life Alert button. When she did not answer Life Alert immediately had the EMS team dispatched. They followed up by calling all her contact numbers. We are very grateful for their professional and quick response.

My mother was with her caregiver when she slipped from her wheelchair to the floor. The caregiver could not lift her up to get her back to the wheelchair. They pressed the Life Alert pendant and help was sent quickly. Thank the Lord there were no injuries.

My 102 year old grandmother was home alone; she fell and pressed the Life Alert around her neck. Life Alert didn’t get a response from her so they dispatched paramedics immediately. I cannot imagine my life without Life Alert. My last experience I was home alone and sick, very sick. I called Life Alert to come to my rescue and they arrived and took me to the emergency room. I was admitted for 1 week, I had a bad reaction to a prescribed medication.

I was discharged from the hospital for CHF. 24 hours later I could barely breathe. My friend was afraid to take me to the ER, and I couldn't walk to the car. I pushed my Life Alert pendant and 911 came and transported me to the hospital ER. I was admitted for 5 days, and then in rehab for 8 days, then discharged. I am doing better now.

My 83-year-old father sought information from Life Alert and did not immediately sign up with them. He had given the sales rep his phone number and email address. For six months, a regional rep called and sent him friendly emails (on her long mail list of friends), political jokes, "I care about you" notes (always with a reminder to get Life Alert). I contacted her at his request to stop the calls and email spamming. When she didn't desist, I contacted her company manager. Eventually, the emails stopped but the regular sales calls didn't. He told me the same lady sales rep (Marsha **) had personally called him to see how he was doing and he had signed up for a year of service. They installed the monitor and a smoke detector, and he initialed the paperwork.
When I visited, I discovered he had initialed a three year contract, not one year, with monthly auto payments from his credit card. They checked in with him to assure the equipment was working once a month for three months and thereafter never checked in again. Their lengthy disclaimers on the contract deny responsibility for almost any accountability for successful emergency response. At the end of a year, he decided he did not need their less than supportive services. After hours of searching and getting the runaround, we got the phone number for the contracts department.
Upon learning that he wanted to cancel his services, they were rude, dismissive and told us they'd either continue to withdraw the monthly payments or take a lump sum for the remaining 48 months, service or not. "The only way he can drop services is if he dies or goes into a nursing home, and we require written proof of either of those." So he was contractually obligated to keep paying them for three years and he continued their services. Thereafter, they did not check in with him or verify that the equipment was in working order nor did they upgrade his equipment, which contractually should have been done.
A month and a half before the end of the three year contract, we notified them he would not renew it. Though they tried to persuade us to let the contract "auto renew," we cancelled it, received mailing labels, boxed the outdated equipment and returned it to Life Alert (note that they require the original box!). In summary, their sales rep used high pressure, unethical techniques and preyed on elderly fears and insecurities. Then the installer had him initial a three year contract, and their monitoring services were not maintained. Zero star rating.
We understand and appreciate your concern over your father’s well-being; unfortunately, you are under a false assumption about our contract and business practices. Since we do not cold call or employ telemarketers when someone needs us THEY call us. Your father must have felt that he needed our service since he contacted us. Sadly, our direct sellers have experienced that a delay in our service could have catastrophic results for the elderly, so they view every inquiry as a call for help and they send friendly reminders as to not to put off our life saving service.
Life Alert does not force, intimidate, or manipulate anyone into using our service with our friendly reminders. All the same, if you specifically asked for your father to be put on the Do Not Call list, he should not have received any more calls from us. Please contact us at our private email, wecare@lifealert.com, with your father’s name and number so we can investigate who the direct seller was that kept calling your father as well as the manager to whom you spoke with.
Regarding the contact; Life Alert does not offer a one year contract. Instead, we have a three-tiered, fail-safe, procedure that protects our customer’s from buyer’s remorse. All of our direct sellers know our life saving contract very well and advise potential customers thoroughly.
Still, just in case there are any misunderstandings with the customer and our contract agreement, the customer is notified two more times by other individuals in different departments (not sales) and the contract is reviewed again. The last person to call the customer to verify all the details of the contract is a man who has been with the company since the beginning. He knows the contract very well and knows how to clearly explain it so that there are no misunderstandings.
But what is just as important and often missed by some people, who have no problem signing contracts for items such as cell phone services or home/auto leases, is that our contract agreement is the customer’s price protection so the customer is guaranteed a fixed cost with no increases, no hidden fees, and that the account will not be sold to another company, like other medical alert companies do without contracts. In addition, the account is not activated until the agreement has been read, signed and sent back to us.
Therefore, your father had been notified by three different people in three different departments regarding the details of the contract, along with being sent the contract in writing for him to review, sign, and send in, which he did willingly. Lastly, our contract is only for 36 months and after having our service for a year, your father's remaining amount would be for 24 months, not 48 months as you claim.
Life Alert provides our customers with new, top of the line, life saving equipment; low battery notification; monitored emergency upgrades; plus we own and operate our own emergency center, benefits other medical alert companies do not provide. Furthermore, our top of the line, life saving service, is in many cases less expensive than unknown, less reputable medical alert companies.
At no time did we promise to call and check in on your father monthly – that would be an impossible task. Yet, what we do strongly recommend is that our customers check in with us monthly to make sure their equipment is working well and the batteries are active. We give them memory markers that will help them remember when to push their emergency button for a monthly test, such as, when they pay their rent or mortgage – push their button; or when they sit down to pay their bills – push their button; etc…
You are under another false assumption that we are contractually obligated to update your father’s equipment. We have our customer’s test their equipment monthly to ensure everything is working well, but if it is not, then we troubleshoot the problem and if the problem requires new equipment then we replace the equipment.
We hope we have cleared up any misunderstandings that you may have had, and have explained our caring business practices.
