Life Alert was founded in 1987, making it one of the first personal emergency response companies in the United States. The company’s systems have a base hub and a help button that can be worn around the neck on a pendant or wristband. Life Alert advertises that its pendants have a 10-year battery life and don't require charging. Monitoring centers are UL-certified and have the Five Diamond designation from The Monitoring Association.

My father had fallen in his room. He has dementia and we did not know if he would remember to push his button. Thankfully, he did and Life Alert alerted the authorities and the ambulance took him to the hospital.

I got the service for my 89-year-old mom. The sales rep totally misrepresented the terms, which he omitted to mention includes a 3-year commitment. He did say that there would be a full refund within 3 years if my mom died or went into a nursing home. But he did not say it was a 3-year contract. The actual terms stipulate that if the subscriber dies "while at home alone," there's a refund. The nursing home placement just enables the contract cancellation. I had asked the rep if placing her in a private home qualified, and he assuredly said yes. But that would not satisfy the contract wording. They hurried to get the system installed, even though I wanted to wait a few days so I could be at my Mom's. I should have insisted because I would have read the contract and gotten angry then, not after the equipment was installed, and nixed it before my mom signed the contract (but they know this).
So I called the next day to cancel the contract (thank God for the standard 3 business day cancellation). I was sent to a voicemail, but no one called back. I called today, and the same sales rep instructed me to call ext. ** (and he offered no apologies for my dissatisfaction). The "retention rep" then says I have to speak to the sales rep and transfers me before I can tell him what I was told. So I'm back to the sales rep who then says they'll have to call me back. I don't trust this company, especially to monitor my Mom's safety. My aunt has this service and has had no problems, but all I've gotten is false information and now a run-around. We'll see if this gets resolved today. Next stop is the BBB.
We have investigated this issue and found that our billing department has been returning the complainant’s calls and leaving him messages regarding this account. Further investigation has uncovered that our sales rep was clear in explaining the terms of our service agreement.
However, even if the sales rep misrepresented the terms, Life Alert has a three-tiered, fail-safe procedure that protects our customers from buyer’s remorse. Our service agreement is explained during the initial presentation process, and then it is confirmed by another individual from the verification department. It is confirmed yet again by our customer satisfaction team before shipping the equipment. Lastly, the customer is given time to read through the contract in the comfort of their own home before signing and sending it back to us.
We called the complainant again today and when speaking with him, he admitted that he did receive the other verification calls regarding the terms of our service agreement but must have misunderstand all of the information. He then told us he had “no hard feelings” against our company.
We believe that since his aunt has our service and has been very happy with us, that he wanted the best for his mother as well; so he ordered an enhanced home and personal protection package, but within a few days he decided his mother didn’t need all that protection and wanted to cancel. We have since been in contact with him and this matter has been resolved.

I have made numerous attempts to terminate the service for my father, and Dave at the company keeps hanging up on me. I don't even know what to do now! He would not transfer me to a supervisor and will not allow the service to be terminated except in the case of DEATH. Really, so for the rest of my father's life he has to pay this company! I don't think so! If anyone has any idea how to get this company to terminate service please let me know.
Life Alert does not telemarket or cold call so when someone wants or needs our service, they call us. Apparently, our customer felt he needed our service since he contacted us. We investigated this complaint and found that our service, policies, and personnel were in good standing and followed procedures.
Due to HIPPA laws, and for the protection of our customers, we cannot release any information or make any changes to an account without the authorization of our customer or his POA. The complainant’s name is not on the contract, billing, nor is she named as the POA. Our calls are recorded for quality assurance and we have reviewed her conversations with our customer service representative. Our policies were explained to her by our representative when she called regarding her father’s account. She proceeded to be rude, demanding and abusive when we asked to have the responsible party call us to make changes to the account.
A separate department called her the next day to explain our policies again and the reasons for it, and to have her father call us directly. She said that she had paid for the service and she should be able to talk to someone; however, the payee’s name and credit card number on the account is not hers. Then she claimed no one ever said anything about a service agreement, which is untrue. When explaining how we have people call to confirm our service agreement terms she abruptly said thank you and hung up on us.
We have since spoken to the responsible party on this account and have rectified any problems and concerns they had.
