My initial contact and contract was by door to door solicitors. Had annual contracts for Gas service, renewable annually. After a couple of years, was wondering why my gas bill was so high. Extremely high given that I live in the SF Bay Area of California. Contract was up for renewal in a couple of months. Went back and checked the contract price vs what I was billed. Rate for the dead of winter was three times the contract price for five months. Called to report discrepancy, was told that they would send request to billing for recalculation.
And, oh, tried both numbers provided for company, one of which was only a robocall operator: choose one of many dead end suggestions. Waited. And waited. Called and emailed after 30 days. Sent in an itemized by billing cycle of the recalculated correct billing and what I was owed. Person on the second call didn't know what I was talking about, asked to talk to a supervisor. Finally found my request and said that they needed the billing statements from my local provider since they couldn't find two of the statements on their end. HUH??? No records of their own????
Emailed them two of the five that they claimed they didn't have. They emailed back to wait 4-6 weeks for my refund. Waited and waited again. Finally got this "debit card" in the mail. Didn't know what it was for. Called the number on the card, found out this was a company Spark paid to handle their refunds. Instead of cash, they send pre-paid debit cards. Then found out the amount. They had only refunded four of the five months I was over-billed for. Had to email and call again. Again, person on the other end of the line knew nothing, had to refer to billing for adjustment.
Waited and waited another 30 days. Finally emailed and called, again. Person on the line said, the amount was correct. And, they were charging me local tax, AGAIN. WHOA, ARE YOU KIDDING. Get me a supervisor. Restated the whole problem again, and that I was doubly upset now that they weren't going to refund the overpayment of the tax that was incorrectly charged in the five months of billing they screwed up. Supervisor looked, said yes, I was correct, a billing cycle was missing.
Finally, a person who sounded like they knew what was going on. Except, this was months from the first complaint and still not settled. Said they would send it to the billing department, again, the third time. Wait another 4-6 weeks for settlement. Wrote down the number of this "supervisor" from the reverse directory. Asked for a direct line to them. They said there is not a direct line they could give me, so have to continue calling number, get a receptionist, explain problem, ask for supervisor, explain problem again. Get told to wait, and wait and wait.
Finally got second card. Total of both cards about five bucks less than I was owed. Finally they got me to quit. Problem with these cards? You can't cash them out. And unless you use them to pump gas, you will always leave money on the card. If the cost of what you are purchasing is over the card balance, it will not let you use it, unless you are pumping gas.
This company is badly run: no direct supervisor connection, you always get a different person every time you call. No direct access to the billing department for billing discrepancies. Unable to follow contract price: in breach of contract and inability to reconcile discrepancies in a timely manner. And it still amazes me that I had to provide my statements outlining the discrepancies!
Beware and examine your contract vs billed rates. This company is probably making a mint off of customers who don't examine their bills.
We are truly sorry to hear that this was your experience. We'd like to review your account and the calls to see how we can improve. Please email us at officeofthepresident@sparkenergy.com with details of your experience and your account information. Thank you.

My father has Spark as their light company. He told me to call them to see how the rates were. I got a good rate compared to my father's so I decided to go with Spark. When I called, they told me that after a certain number of months or weeks they were gonna give my father a discount on a month’s rate. Another thing about Spark is their rates don't go up and down like other companies. That really helps us out especially right now with how the economy is and how the work situation is.

I did all the research online, and then called to get everything set up to make sure that I went into the plan that I wanted. I'm hoping at some point in time Spark does something more fixed rate so that once we get an average of bills, then I can work on something more fixed rate to budget a bit better.

Spark Energy's rate is less compared to others, so I went with them. I've been with them for a few months now and they're good. But they don't have a good renewal process. I am a previous Spark Energy customer. My rate plan changed which forced me to go out and switch to somebody else. I didn't want to pay too much money when I was renewing. If I'm at 8.5 cents or 9 cents and I want to renew at the same time, same price, Spark Energy should be able to renew it. I understand that rate changes but if they have that plan, they should give me the option to renew it. They should be competitive enough with other providers, then only I can be with them.
I signed up for auto-pay and bills are getting paid. But my problem is that I cannot log into their website. I signed up with the same email address that I had previously. I had no problems signing up. But when I want to log in to check my bill, I am not able to log in. I've raised a couple of tickets but still, they send an email back saying that within 24 hours or 48 hours, somebody will look into it. That never happens. It's not working.
We can definitely understand your concerns regarding renewing and we'd be happy to explain how our prices work and why the same rates are not always available. Additionally, we'd also like to assist with any log-in issues you are having. Please email us at officeofthepresident@sparkenergy.com. Thank you.

I used to have somebody else and it was easier to navigate their website than Spark Energy. For some reason, I wasn't able to get into my account after trying multiple times. They would send an invoice to me for my email. Then the email stopped and so I was back on my payments. I had to sign up for automatic, which I still couldn't even get into the account. I spoke to one representative whenever I was setting up my payments. But it takes a long time to get on the phone with anybody. I work night shift. If it's 2:00 PM, it’s 2:00 AM for me. I’m not gonna be able to hold for an hour. I don't have time to wait on the phone forever.
Also, when I initially started, I was supposed to get a Spark $50 referral code from my dad but I never got that. My previous company gave me a $50 Visa and since I got it from my friend, they donated something to the food bank. So, it’s more of an incentive for me to join. Then I was supposed to get $50 credit or something from Spark since I got a referral, but I didn't know.

I was fraudulently signed up a few years ago to Spark Energy! They claim one of their salesman came to my address and had me sign up... Fact is I was NOT home for the first half of the day they claim this happened and later in the day I had company over - NO ONE CAME TO MY DOOR from Spark and they certainly didn't show up later that evening either!
I finally got to the point to look into this earlier this year and I eventually was able to supposedly cancel this so called account (sent me an email stating that is was and that my service would go back to P G & E)! This was followed a few weeks later by a different supplier which I had spoken with but no one connected with Spark Energy! Proof that it was or should have been cancelled! One other thing these crooks at Spark claimed they only received (1) payment from me through P G & E while my bank records and statements show otherwise - a payment fully and on time each month since they, not myself, signed me up! Not one missed payment at all...
Fast forward to 06/20/2020 and in the mail these liars and crooks send a notice that if I don't pay they will send the account which should have been closed to a collection agency - for 727.38 of payments NOT missed! These thieves should have taken it up with P G & E if they (P G & E) failed to send any of the other payments! Oh and the salesman for the other supplier had even said that Spark had their license revoked. Don't believe me, check all the complaints about them here and elsewhere online! For any Spark representative replying to this: ONLY resolution I REQUEST is kill the damned account and drop the bull **** game! That account should have been closed months ago!
Thank you for your review and your feedback. Our records indicate that our Office of the President has already thoroughly reviewed the account and discussed the findings with you. The balance on the account is valid and considered past due.

Looks like they are trying to scam people by sending their agents as agents of my provider. Beware of these people, I will not trust anyone who knocks my door again, lesson learned. And I am never trusting sparkenergy ever again.

I agree with Marie in Sacramento. There are door to door salesmen that pretty much demand to see your PG&E bill. They told me that if I added them to my already existing account that my bill would be half of what it originally came in as monthly. This conversation was not recorded. I of course agreed because who doesnt want a lower bill? She then put me on a recorded line with a gentleman who asked me if I understand what I agreed to. I said yes.
Once my first bill came in DOUBLE what my original bill would have been I called to complain. I was then told that I was on a recorded line saying I agreed to their terms. I agreed to a bill being cut in half not doubled. When they sent that recording to Consumer Affairs they then subsequently told me they could not help me because I agreed to the terms. They never actually recorded the terms that the salesperson explained to me. Now if I want to opt out I have to either pay $100 or wait for the year to be up all the while receiving a bill from this company.
We apologize for your experience. The enrollment verification is recorded by a third party to ensure that the customer is aware of the terms they are agreeing to - this includes the price and cancellation fee. The recorded enrollment confirmation also ensures that the terms that the sales agent explains are the correct ones and if the customer chooses not to agree or has questions about the terms, the enrollment can be stopped at any point.

We switched out of Spark Energy and then I called them to see what their rates were to see if I could come back. It was a lot better than what I came across. Also, there was no cancelation fee The signing up with them went really smoothly and they offered me rebates. There’s a rebate after three months and then after a number of months. Why do you find it okay to charge me an extra month's "Monthly Fee" when I canceled my contract within your cancelation period, 6 whole days before its actual end date? I had a 6 month contract, billed monthly, ended it a week early (which is allowed), and yet you sent me 7 "months" of invoices with an extra month fee. The last bill was for 2 days and it was still the same month! It had a monthly $8.99 fee which I paid for on the previous invoice that I got just 2 days prior! I did everything right. I talked to CS and they said the last monthly charge was actually for January but if you trace my measly 6 months of usage back that makes no sense because I paid for that already. I decided not to waste my time calling back again and pay your little bill.
When checking my history, you always made it difficult to see all my usage in one spot by using graphs with no numbers. When I decided to consider other providers it was difficult to find all the info I needed. You also manipulate users into leaving good reviews for benefits so that you have lots of great reviews and the real reviews get drowned out. They offered me a benefit for leaving a review so that's why I (and many others) left reviews with only a couple hours of experience with their services months ago.
Thank you for your review. Although you indicate that you received more than one invoice within a month, please keep in mind that you are only billed based on the electricity you use. We receive your usage based on monthly scheduled meter readings from your local utility; when your service is switched on a date that isn't the normal meter reading date, you will receive an additional bill for the electricity used for that specific time. We'd be happy to waive the minimum usage fee on your last invoice. Please email us at officeofthepresident@sparkenergy.com

I have dealt with their customer service when I was getting things set up. Then I called back because I have a condo property in Galveston, Texas and then my home, and you couldn't put two accounts on the same profile. With most of the companies now, you can put multiple properties on one. It is billed separately, but you can still see what the usage is on one account.

Spark Energy is a complete scam in CA, where we have PGE. A door to door salesperson comes up to "sell you" on spark energy. And tells you, not to worry, in 6 months, if you dont like the service, it automatically cancels unless you renew it. Never received ANY information from spark to my house, just saw it on my bill. The charges were cheap, under $25 a month, and I assumed that's just what it was, until all of a sudden, I started getting charged DOUBLE gas. I called to speak with spark and they informed me that they sent out one letter that was required by the state of California (at least it shows on their end it was printed and mailed) to inform me of this information, and that I now had to cancel spark. It wouldn't drop off. I never received any letters at my house.
SPARK is not needed by anyone in the state of CA as we are PGE state. Their offices are only open in central time, so make sure you call when it's convenient to them. I would NEVER recommend SPARK to anyone ever, and tell everyone to run far. Not only was I unable to speak to a manager as requested, I was told it would take TWO billing cycles for SPARK to stop billing me. RUN FAR AWAY. IT'S A SCAM.

I've paid $6000+ more than I should have over the last 5 years. Stupid me I just thought that was the rate for all these years. Spark stated they send a letter out about a renewal in 2013. I asked if he could give me their phone number and he did. Different providers all start off pretty good, but it seems like as time goes on, the price goes up a little bit, but I stay pretty much the same. There are two of us living in the house. It’s a small house with three bedrooms. And I’ve tried to keep the electric down as much as I can. I only wash a couple of times a week and try to turn the lights off. And just little things so that the bill won’t be too high.
The only problem I have is I’m very warm-natured, I get hot very easily. And so, the summertime, I have my air going. I purchased several stand-up fans. And I have a fan right by the chair that I sit in, and if I feel that I’m getting hot, I turn the fan on me. And I had fans that blow the air around, so that helps a lot, and I know it’s helped me with the electric bill, too. So far, I’m satisfied with Spark. There hadn’t been a problem. Since I am 80, and my husband is 82, I was trying to set up the system so I can automatically pay and they said this cannot be done by the phone. I was previously with Direct Energy and I had a good rate with them. Everything was fine but from a bill of $57 for one month, it went to almost $300 on the next month. It was huge, so I called them and I asked what was going on and if there was a mistake. They said that I was on a promotional rate that had expired and no one told me. The rep said that I should have reviewed something and I did. So, I thought of finding someone else. My friend Natalie had just switched to Spark and she was telling me how much she loves them and she gave me the information. Price stability is extremely important, which was the reason why I chose Spark. I can pinpoint what my bill is gonna be every month without me having to look at it. It has been wonderful because it has been affordable.
We definitely agree with the importance of price stability! Thank you for taking your friend's recommendation. If you recommend any friends or family, make sure to provide them your personal referral code. Also, be on the lookout for a contract expiration notice in the next few weeks.

I was with another electricity company for three years and they couldn't give me a better rate so I started searching for another company and I got Spark. I didn't have to have a deposit with them. It's just that the customer service could be a little better. I’m on a fixed income so I get paid around the third of every month. The other company had my bill to where it would come due on the 5th of every month. I talked to several of the Spark employee's management to see if they could do that, and they would not do that for me. Then once my bill is a couple of days past due, they will call every day about that bill, about the account, even if I've made a payment arrangement. They still call every day.
Thank you for your feedback. At this time, there is not a way for us to adjust the due date; our system is automatically set to allow 16 days for payment then an additional grace period. Although we cannot accommodate your date request, we will certainly make note of your suggestion.

Spark Energy's service has been great. It's all been pretty straightforward and easy. If there's one thing, I hope I get alerts the day before our bill is due. I get the invoice, but it's like a month before. But other than that, it's been fantastic so far. I'm on the Green product. I would like to save the environment in that kind of way. The price was reasonable, and it was actually cheaper than going for coal from some other providers or like normal standard electric. And so, I thought that that was acceptable.

My previous father-in-law used Spark Energy and recommended them. I've been with them for at least 10 years. They're kinda no-nonsense. I don’t have to deal with any paperwork and the payment comes automatically out of my account, which is handy. Their rates seem to be pretty low in comparison with the local provider, which is Reliant. My rate changes based on usage, at my rate per kilowatt hour as well. I've had to call their customer service once and it was super fast. They had my issue resolved in the same phone call within a matter of about five minutes. So, by the time we got through, I got an email that said the times were new, and every package they have available is on the website. So, it’s very self-explanatory and easy to use.
My parents have been very set in their ways, but I’m trying to sell them on the idea that Spark Energy is a cheaper option and it’s a lot easier to use. My father’s biggest pet peeve is dealing with people on the phone. With Spark, 90% of it is how you’re handling it on your own. He doesn’t have to really deal with anybody and get angry at poor phones and at phone takers unless there was a major issue like an outage. But there was an outage once and I had an email within an hour explaining about the situation. I didn’t have to really deal with it.
We truly appreciate your review and your business. It's great to hear that you are satisfied with our service but we'd like to confirm that your rate does not change based on your usage. Your rate will remain fixed for the duration of the contract; however, your average price which includes your delivery charges will vary.

I've used another provider in the past and Spark Energy is better because of their fixed rate and what they offer. Their kilowatt per hour is very reasonable and decent. Then sometimes, they do the sign-up contract yearly or 13 months. Also, you can change it or cancel it and there's no penalty so it's good. I've just noticed that I could use more energy day or night, and I can expect what I expect monthly. I pay my bill online. It's simple, easy and quick. It's not complicated and it doesn't take you here or there. You just log in and it pops up. Overall, working with Spark Energy helps me save money. I have recommended them.

I live by myself and I don’t use that much electricity, so I kinda watch and keep things down to a minimum because I’m on a fixed income. Plus they were a lot cheaper than Spark Energy. The bill they set me up on had me having to use a certain amount and if I went over it, my rate changed. My bills were like outrageous for a couple of months. So, I called Spark and they fixed it all. They explained to me what was happening and took care of the situation for one month. I was impressed that Spark was very willing to do this and fix that. I thought service with Spark Energy was removed back in 2014 but to my surprise they’ve been my “floating rate” provider since then. ComEd brought to my attention that my $560 bill was partially due to being charged nearly triple what their rate currently is. Granted this is obviously partially my fault but I assumed it was removed and ComEd was again my provider, my bill was reflecting correct charges.- wrong! Highly suggest reviewing your bills if you have automated monthly payment. I was originally disappointed at myself as well as the company but with such a loyal customer as myself why would they want to “renew” a contract with me or try and contact me at all! I contacted them in regards to my non removal of provider and their response was “Well, we have no record of that.”
Spoke to a manager and when I asked what the “contract said” his response was in the state of Illinois a verbal contract is legal and that he wasn’t able to say -who runs a legitimate business with that? I called again and asked for a copy of the contract because ComEd suggested with the situation contacting the Illinois Commission of Commerce and they only file for 2 years. There is nothing from them that they can provide a floating rate so how in the hell are they getting away with it? I know for a fact when they originally had 3 people come to my house in 2012 and sign me up for a 6 month trial period this wasn’t the expected outcome.
I’m so happy I finally was able to figure out why my bill is so high. ComEd suggested to fax in forms for removal or find another provider because of non removal. I’m obviously not the first this has happened to. $3, 4, & 500 bills monthly are a little out of control for a small space. It’s a matter of time before this is a legal matter, I’m sure. That administrative fee and high rates are finally a thing of the past. Currently ComEd is charging 6.725 and Spark was charging me for 17.99... So happy to find out the reasoning behind my high bills.
We are sorry to hear that your experience was not great. If you would like to provide your information so we can search for the call where you requested to cancel, we'd be happy to review so please email us. Thank you.

Because if I knew I wouldn’t agree to sign up.
Anyways didn’t know till my first bill with them to find out it’s like I'm paying double of my gas bill cuz I’m paying $42 a month for their service and gas from pg&e! So I called to terminate the contract I never knew I had which if I kept the contract I would be paying double of the termination fee when it will end either way.. I was informed that they have a recording of me agreeing to all terms so of course I WANNA HEAR IT before paying that $100.. After calling 3 times for the recording they tell me when the agent who has the recording is available they would give me a call. EACH TIME I CALLED they said the same thing so I can hear the recording and no phone call! Last call I did was to speak to a manager and was put on hold. After being put on hold back and forth with the agent and supervisor for 20mins they hung up on me!! So if they can’t help me I had no choice but to get help elsewhere..

And then later in the week, I got a letter saying I'm gonna be disconnected this Friday if I don’t pay it. And I’d already paid it. I looked on my credit I got online and it’s already been paid. Do NOT switch to Spark Energy. I signed a contract with Spark Energy for 18 months at .0178 per therm and called to cancel my contract two months before that rate lock ended. I was told that if I cancelled I would have to pay an early termination fee, which was costly. I then waited a month before the contract ended in attempt to avoid the variable rate hike and was told I could cancel and would start back with PSEG supplying my electricity after the contract ended. Spark Energy then moved me to a variable rate of .16 per therm even though I cancelled at the time of the contract. SO I couldn't cancel early to avoid paying the variable rate hike and I couldn't cancel at the end of my contract to avoid the rate hike.
Either way they will hike your rate to whatever they want for at least two months even after your contract ends or they will charge you an early termination fee for trying to avoid the rate hike. It isn't even about the loss of money as it is about the principle of deceptive business practices. DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THIS COMPANY.

I signed up to continue with Spark but they weren’t real flexible on some stuff. The length of time that I could sign up for was either a year or two years. So, it was not real flexible in how long you could sign up for. Also, if you’re running a little late with your payment, Spark will drive you insane telling you about it about five times a day. They need to chill out a little bit. The first time they notify me, I’m on it. And as soon as I get the funds, then I send it in. They could just notify somebody once or twice, because nobody has the time or the patience to be pursued in that fashion. Other than that, they’re doing great and my bills are pretty good. Spark energy is nothing but a SCAM!!! Ask yourself this, if their products are so good, WHY ARE THEY SENDING A SALESPERSON DOOR TO DOOR TO GET PEOPLE TO SIGN UP? They are located in Texas and were at my front door in New Jersey....very strange!!! I was told I will get a lower price for gas and electric, but when my bill came the prices were quadruple when compared to my PSE&G. PSE&G prices was lower.
Spark Energy customer service personnel lied to me and told me they send out a renewal letter, but I never received such letter. I called back the next day and another customer service personnel told me that NO letter was sent out to me upon reviewing my account. SOMEONE LIED!!! They will NOT refund several thousands dollars for the OOOVERPRICED Gas & Electric. They are SOLICITORS!!!! Don't give them your business... I will post the evidence from by bills to compare the OVERPRICED charges. Thanks for reading my review and I hope Spark Energy will allow this review. That is if they can handle the truth!!

Verde Energy said that if I wanted to continue with the energy supplier, they would transfer me to Spark Energy. And I got transferred. I have been getting rebate checks from Verde Energy, so I was used to that. And with Spark Energy, I didn’t qualify. But their rep said that he had put in for me to get adjusted checks again and I had never got adjusted checks from Spark Energy. Also, there's a difference with the letters I get from Spark and Verde. If I got mail from Verde, it would be telling me that they were my energy supplier. I was getting rebate checks, and then they would still be my energy supplier. Having to pay for energy supplier doesn’t bother me because they're still considerably low. I've tried to really watch how I use my electricity.
I love the electricity that I get from Spark Energy. Summer’s coming and I wanna get more than one fan, and I know I won't boost up my bill a whole lot. In my apartment, I feel cold sometimes at daytime, but at night, if I'm wrapped up, I'm warm. But I'm pleased with them trying to explain to me about the kilowatt-hours. Since I moved from apartment to apartment, I can compare a difference. My electricity is flowing the way I would like it. It's just that I don't have some type of heat I would like. I will recommend Spark and I'm gonna stay with them. I enjoy my electricity every day.

Starting this year I started receiving charges from this company on my PG&E bill. I immediately call the company as I've NEVER EVER paid anything close to what I was being charged. Come to find out we supposedly signed up for this service which was not true. 1 I have a locked gate 2. I have guard dogs and lastly 3. No one was home at the time we were all out of state. When they provided the phone number used to sign up, it didn't match anyone's. I asked them to cancel the account which they stated I needed to pay what is owed in order to cancel.
I told them I was not going to pay those fraudulent charges that I did NOT agree to. So they close my account and ask me to pay what is needed and they'd reimburse me the total amount. Called one day, a rep said 1 check of $56 was going to be sent. I called another day, another rep said only 1 check of $78 will be sent. Not totaling what I am owed. This company is shady, they beat around the bush, and when you catch them red handed they play dumb. Waiting for resolution. If not, got my lawyers ready. Do NOT trust this company.

My wife answered, I could hear some discussions then, she came to me and I asked: "What? another damn solar company?" No, she said, it's about verifying our PG&E rates. It had been long day and I had had a couple of beers and was very tired. Your agent said that he was s 'subcontractor to PG&E who was sent to verify that I was on the correct rate. He continued that, with the fires lawsuits and PG&E's bankruptcy, I needed to be on a 'lower rate' for gas or my bill would increase significantly. I specifically asked what the bill amount for gas would be and he said it is bundled and not broken out but my bill would show detail charges. I listened to his pitch and then received a verification call (to prove me checked my gs rates) as he went down his printed script and provided responses just to get him out of here!
After I had dinner and my head cleared, I did some on-line research and was disturbed at what I found. By this time it was after 7 PM and your office was closed. I called early the next day (3/14) and spoke to "Josh #**", explained the above facts and told him I had buyers remorse (Intoxicated at the time) and I DID NOT WANT ORDER #** PLACED. Someone tried to fraudulently open an account with Spark Energy in November 2018 with my info. I called Spark Energy to stop it and they said that they could find my information in their system and that they would put a stop on any transfers pertaining to my address. But somehow an account was still fraudulently opened with Spark Energy using my gas meter number. The name, address, phone number and Nicor account number attached to the account is incorrect and there have been multiple people calling about the account that aren't me.
Upon discovering that this happened I called Spark Energy back who then told me that it was my account even though they couldn't find anything in the system under my real information outside of the meter number. They then proceeded to tell me that I needed to pay the Nicor bill even though multiple representatives concluded that the account with Spark Energy was fraudulent. I asked to speak with the representative who emailed me and he wasn't available. Neither was any of the supervisors or any management. I was then told that I was escalating the issue after they tried to resolve it.
I offered to allow the Illinois Commerce Commission, Attorney General and Better Business Bureau figure the situation out. They told me to they would re-rate the account to the Nicor rate but I would still need to pay the bill and they would send me a refund and it would take 1 to 2 billing cycles. I asked why can't they just re-rate the bill and take off their charges instead of me overpaying and them having to send me a refund check for their charges and I was told that that's not the way it goes. After the representative talked in circles for an hour nothing was resolved. On Monday March 11th, 2019 I will be filing complaints with the companies above if this situation is not rectified immediately.

I've had multiple door salesmen come INSIDE my apartment completely harassing me to switch to Spark. They guaranteed me all these rates that I'm almost positive they had no idea what they were talking about. The first women to come had me lend her my phone charger so she could charge her phone, then had me call to sign up for Spark and stood there telling me what to say. When they ask has the representative left your property, she had me lie while standing right next to me. I receive my first month bill with an over 100% increase in the amount I was charged. They sell it to you as your bill will be the same except you get 100 free dollars a month (which is not true, $100 dollar value in coupons). Legally, this has some serious issues with sales practices.

The day I moved, I had them leave the power on at the old place for one more day, and that way we had a good transition. I had plenty of time to do the setting up and everything was good. We were offered a lower rate over a longer period, and the rate was the same when we moved. The amount on our electric bill has been fairly consistent and it has been cheaper moving over here. The only thing we have issues with is our gas. However, our rate is about to go up and we need to set it again. Still, Spark has great rates and great customer service too. There's not a bunch of wait-on-the-phone whenever I wanna talk to somebody and they're very easy to deal with.

She cancelled everything, gave me a confirmation number, her name and ID NUMBER. Feb 19 my mother gets her gas bill and almost had a heart attack.
The bill was over $500, Spark had charged her $306. I called Spark to ask why she was being billed when I had cancelled in Jan. I was told they had no record of the cancellation in their system, I tried giving the rep my confirmation number and the info of the person who did the cancellation. She would not take it saying if the cancellation wasn’t in their system there was no way to trace the number and since my mother enrolled she was responsible for the bill. We checked Spark Energy and they seemed to be reputable. They had a better rate, too. I’ve checked from one year to the next to see if there was a difference and there was a slight difference in 2018 because it was a little colder. 2016 and 2017 weren’t too bad. This year, being as cold as it is, it probably cost us a bit more, but it wouldn’t cost us more with anybody else. Spark Energy has not changed its price at all and it has been the same for the last several years.
The only thing is they sent us a Nest thermostat. It controls the heat in the air conditioning, except it controls it at its own terms and we have no control over it. We can leave the house and come home, and the thermostat will be blasting at 77 degrees in the heat. In the summertime, we’ve left and come home, and I had it set for 76, 77, 87, and 88. I primarily put the air out to get the humidity out of the house and the temperature rose, but it wasn't big a deal. So, we come home and it’s down to 71 or 70. It changes its settings by itself.
We didn’t have a smartphone when it was installed and we’ve never connected it to a smartphone since my wife got one about six months ago. It is a little complicating and it doesn’t make sense if the thermostat should run itself and we should have no control over it. We can change it, but we have to be here to change it. If I was gone for two days and it sets itself for 77 degrees, it would be blasting the heat off for two days. Even when I’m home, it changes. I get up in the morning and it is 70 degrees, although I want it at 72. In order to get it to come back up, I have to turn it up to 73 and it will come up, then I turn it back to 72. The billing comes through like it is supposed to and they take the money out of the bank like they are supposed to, and it hasn’t been as expensive except this year. The weather affects the usage and this year, we’ve had an extremely heavier usage, but next year could be a lot better.
Thank you for your feedback regarding your experience with Spark Energy. We are sorry to hear that you are having issues with your Nest thermostat but hope that you are able to troubleshoot and correct the settings to lower your usage. We appreciate your business!

A few months ago I had 2 door sales representatives from Spark Energy come to my door. They informed me that Spark Energy was a third party energy company that could offer competitive therm rates cheaper than PG&E. They mentioned there was only a small $4.99 service fee and could cancel anytime. I went ahead and signed on, and didn't see a problem until the 3rd month. I have solar panels, so when my bill came out to $306 it was an obvious invoice. My PG&E showed 2 gas fees: one from PG&E and the other from Spark. I called PG&E and asked for an explanation of fees. They said, they would always be on there because they deliver the gas and explained the credits removed since now Spark was charging their own therm fees. The PG&E credits removed totaled $53.18. PG&E said they only charge, .45 cents per therm.
Now, Sparks separate fee was $127.14. I call Spark and ask them what they were charging me for and they said .82 cents!!! PER THERM!!! Highway robbery!!! Rep apologized about the door sales reps and said they should have explained the introductory rate better. I cancelled Sparks that minute. People, please don't make this mistake! I overpaid $94.67 extra!! It's not worth switching over to companies who promise you the best rates and apologize when you call and say it was supposed to be an intro rate! Thank you for leaving your feedback. Although we don't have 24 hour customer service, you can always correspond with us through email if you are not able to call us during our business hours. There are many competitors that actually close before 7pm. In regards to the switch hold, it is only kept on the account until the balance is up-to-date; this ensures that the balance is satisfied before a customer switches which would otherwise leave us with bad debt.

Beware, at first, they always seems to be very reliable with their initial plan. My first plan with them is 0.075/kWh (because of -$60 when using over 1000kWh), so my house's average fee each month is around $120 (some months are below $100). BUT, the December bill's usage was suddenly doubled (to $229.39) without anything changed in my home (we're students and spend a lot of time studying on the library for the final, so it's supposed to be lower).
Not only that, the January bill this month is $602.14!!! I thought it must be a mistake in meter or system. So I called them, and they said the rate was doubled because I didn't renew the plan which they said they already sent me notifications of. I checked the email again, and there is no renewal letters, no warning, literally nothing.
Also, when I ask about my sudden high usage, I mention it must be something wrong the meter (because I don't use that much, ~2600kWh for 2 people, I even travel to another state the whole holiday), but the "customer service" keep repeating "No no, it's just because we use too much". Wow. [I read the paper and "Your right as a customer" is completely misleading now, we have no right to doubt the Meter as they said.]
When they doubled the rate, they (the guy name Edward) sent the email said they can adjust the last rate IF I agree to sign a renewal plan (so the customers cannot escape). So I called the number again, this time they (the guy name Daniel) said they can renew but cannot adjust the rate because "it's not their fault" lol. I can see how inconsistent, unprofessional, and greedy they are. Trying to exploit everything. Very disappointed about how they handle this situation.

Other than that, my son hasn't had any problems with electricity. I pay the bills and I do it online. I keep the website pulled up and it's really user-friendly.
Thank you for your feedback, Ms. Perez. There was a change in market conditions which caused electric rates to increase for all suppliers, but we strive to remain competitive. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us for more information about current rates.

I checked rates online and learned about Spark Energy. They had a low rate and didn’t have an early termination. I clicked, filled in some information and signed up with them. Compared to our previous provider, Spark Energy was competitive.
Thank you for your positive review. We strive to provide competitive fixed rates along with excellent customer service and it delights us when we achieve that. We hope that you consider us when you are ready for a new supplier.

My father passed away on October 17, 2018. When I reviewed his Nicor Gas bill I saw that he had service with Spark Energy at $1.39 per therm. I currently pay $0.36 with Nicor. I called Spark to explain that my father passed and to tell them that I would like a lower rate for the past bills, this is a very high rate! I was told that this is the rate and no adjustments can be made. I was told that a letter was sent out, I was given tracking number **, which per the USPS is not a valid tracking number.
I spoke to Cynthia, employer ID **, a district manager who told me she is the highest manager I can speak to. She said the meter reading is accurate (please note it is an estimate, the meter is read every 2 months, with a scheduled reading on January 14, 2019 but Cynthia is insisting that it is not an estimate). I am being told not only can the rate not be adjusted so that it is a more acceptable rate for these last few bills, including the current bill, but I am also being told my cancellation is effective on January 14, 2019, at the next meter reading. How is this possible? This is robbery! How can anyone be willing to pay such a high rate.
Hello Oana, we'd like to confirm that we have received your email and our Office of the President is currently researching your father's account. They will be in contact with you soon.

I've been looking at my bill and I wanna cry. Somebody from Spark Energy came to my door and I asked if it will help me where I don't have to pay so much on how much usage I use for electricity. The reps were very helpful talking to me about my bill, the rates, and how much other suppliers cost, as well as the kilohertz and how much electricity I use. I said that I didn't wanna be paying a high electric bill. For this month, my electric bill is around $62.39, but last month, it was around $40, and it is not that bad.
We appreciate your positive feedback and we are happy that you decided to give us the chance to be your energy supplier. We encourage you to contact us so we can ensure you continue the savings with another great fixed rate contract. Hope to hear from you soon!

When I started off with Spark Energy, it was rocky. I initially saw them at the powertochoose.org website and I decided to go with them because of the cost per kW that I was expecting to pay. Their customer service reps were courteous but they had a hidden cost in the online tool, so it led to a higher rate than what was expected and agreed to. The way the website displayed it, it was a fixed rate but that was not the case. Then they switched me to the green product without explaining what it was. I was on a different one before that was limited to 2000. But I’m in a 12-month contract so I can’t really do much about it at the moment without incurring any additional fees.
Hello Robert, we are sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with the plan that you initially selected. We would like to assure you that we do explain the details of our plans displayed on the Power to Choose website by providing the further details of the plan in the Electricity Facts Label or "EFL". We'd like to discuss this further so we can ensure that you make an educated choice when using the Power To Choose website; please email us.

They told my husband and I that we would get to use $100 a month for whatever we wanted. Just got our first $100. We can't use a single cent without paying money. The "rewards program" is just advertisement for other companies that probably pay Spark to give discounts and put their products up for sale. After reading more reviews on here, I'm worried this is not the only thing they lied about.
Thank you for your feedback Sandra. We apologize if the Rewards program was not correctly explained or if there was any confusion regarding how the program works. We'd like to clear up any questions you have; would you please email us with your account details and questions? Thank you again.

Can't imagine how these people sleep at night. As I read other reviews and the response of Spark Energy I am even more appalled with their lack of ethics. I noticed a very high bill that came in and called to find out why. As it turns out, after the "guarantee period" they started ratcheting up my energy cost per unit. When I pointed this out to them they said they would review the account and get back to me with a potential refund as they were charging me TWICE as much as the going rates that you can search online and this included their own guaranteed rates.
After their review they claimed that they sent me a letter and that because they sent this letter they weren't going to refund me for their obscene over-charges. Don't believe them when they tell someone in these posts that they will review their account. After their "review" they claimed they sent me a letter and therefore were not going to reimburse me anything. I never received a letter from them and regardless of whether they have sent one to other customers it should not give them a license to start charging you much more than market rates. My reward for being a loyal customer was doubling my rates. They are unethical, and dishonest in their business practice as well as their baloney response.
Thank you for your feedback William. We can understand how frustrated you are and we apologize that your experience has not been great. Our Office of the President would like to review your account which would be a separate review from the one you received from our call center. Please email them to us.

Handling transition: I took over power from a previous tenant also using Spark. Previous tenant had arranged to turn off power on October 31. The customer service representative suggested I take over the electricity on October 30 to avoid a gap. I received confirmation of this. Then Spark/Reliant turned off power on October 31 as though I had never taken it over. Evidently someone at Spark failed to cancel the turnoff order. I had to go a day without power and water (power runs the well) until they could get it straightened out. Billing - twice I have received the bill so late that even though I paid by bank bill-pay right after getting it, it did not get to Spark in time for them to process it and credit my account. Because your bills come so late, I will no longer be able to use convenient bank billpay but will have to telephone instead. I'm sure you don't care about my inconvenience, but the late billing reflects poor organization and processes.
We sincerely apologize for the initial situation that caused the interruption in service. We'd like to review your account to see if we can assist you with making your experience more positive. Can you please email us at officeofthepresident@sparkenergy.com? Thank you.

I interacted with the reps about my bill and when I had to renew my contracts and they were professional. On the whole, my experience with Spark has been fine. I’ve had Spark Energy for nine years since I got my first house. They were the lowest rate at the time and after I went with them, I kept on renewing because I’m not good with jumping back and forth. I’ve never had a problem with them and I don’t feel like my light bill is too high. I’ve had the paperless billing and it’s always taken out. Plus, my lights are always on so I can’t complain. I had to call the staff eight years ago since I didn’t realize you had to call and renew contract all the time but Spark has been great so they should keep it up and I have recommended them.

An elderly neighbor showed me his bill after he noticed Spark Energy as a supplier. He hadn't noticed it before but couldn't understand why his bills were always so high. Evidently he had changed suppliers several years ago. He vaguely remembers someone had called him saying they were a supplier for National Grid and requested his account # to give him a discount. Which he gave out. He thought National Grid did it.
We contacted Spark Energy and they said he had a contract with them but he was sure he never signed a contract nor would Spark send him a copy of it. He asked them to stop billing. That didn't happen until we called National Grid. Spark Energy was charging him .15 kwh vs National Grid's .04 per kwh. He switched back to National Grid & at his request, they put a block on his account so that no other outside suppliers could make changes to his account in the future. My advice is IF YOU HAVE ELDERLY FRIENDS/RELATIVES LOOK AT THEIR ELECTRIC BILL! If Spark Energy is on it GET RID OF THEM. They charge VERY HIGH RATES.
Thank you for your feedback regarding your neighbor's experience. Please note that in most cases, a signed contract is not required for enrollment and verbal authorization can be provided instead. The details of the contract are sent in a welcome letter afterwards which also explains what will occur once the contract term expires. If your neighbor would like to discuss his Spark Energy account further, please have him email us at officeofthepresident@sparkenergy.com.

I was looking for a new company and I saw Spark Energy. They had good ratings and I tried them out. I’ve been with them for at least five years now and they're pretty good. I like them. But for the last two to three months, the bill has been getting higher and I don’t know why. At first it was okay, but after my contract finished, it needed to be renewed and they didn’t let me know until a little while ago about the increase. I looked at my new bill coming in and it’s $188. But my bill normally would be no more than $130. Other than that, if I called, they always came through and answered my questions when I needed them.

We have a three-bedroom mobile home and when we used a different provider in the past, our bill went to $444 for a month at one time. So, we switched to Spark Energy. We initially discovered them from the Greensheet, a little local paper that you get for free that lists all the stuff, and we liked the amount of deposit and the low cost per unit they offered. We're on a fixed income so we've selected a fixed-rate energy product with Spark and since we switched, our bill has been $219 a month. I love them to death. They’re a great company and they have personable people.
We appreciate hearing how our customers feel so that we can understand every customer’s needs. We can also certainly understand how important savings and low costs are and we are happy that you have found that in Spark Energy. Thank you for your review.
