I rented from Payless from August 11-18 of 2025. I had asked for a mid-sized car. What I got was barely a compact car with a stained interior and an engine notice that made one wonder. They said the Mitsubishi Mirage I received was a mid-sized car. Maybe for really tiny people! Driving down the highways and streets of San Diego we felt every bump and hole due to poor shocks and suspension. And the price was no savings. Don't be fooled by the quoted price. The end price will be at least 50% higher. How are they still in business?

I really hope this reaches someone who can implement this for training throughout your company. I came in to Houston for a family reunion. Not wanting to inconvenience my family due to them possibly being busy, I decided it would be best to rent a car. I was able to make a reservation for a car while exiting the airport, which I found to be very convenient. When I came out the terminal, the shuttle for the car rental place was already outside and ready to take me to the location.

Once I got to the rental location, I approached the desk and gave the customer service rep my ID and reservation number. Once the rep found my info, I was told that I was too early for the reservation and needed to wait. No problem...understandable. After about 20 minutes, I was allowed to come back up to the desk to process my rental. The rep I dealt with was pleasant and gave me a good recommendation on somewhere to eat. Everything was going well until it came time to authorize my car rental purchase.

Once I inserted my card, everything was confirmed and approved. By the way, please make sure you have a credit card for the rental. I saw at least two people come in with debit cards not be allowed to get their rental. Here's where the issue occurred. Somewhere in the rep's process, it was discovered that I had a rental car out in their system. I confirmed to the rep that I have a rental through Avis back home that I was using for business purposes. Once this was discovered, a manager was alerted of the matter. The manager stated the only way I could get the rental would be if I had another driver on the vehicle. Since I was traveling by myself, I was not allowed to get the rental. No problem...understandable.

Seeing that the authorization on my card went through, I asked the rep when the authorization would be removed so that I could attempt to rent from another company. The rep stated that they didn't process anything so nothing should've went through. Houston...we have a problem and it's not understandable. I advised the rep there absolutely was a charge that went through and I needed to know when it would be gone. They stated it should be cleared after midnight. Unfortunately, the authorization is still on my card and I wound up utilizing rideshare companies the whole weekend to get around. It was a great inconvenience to what I wanted to do.

I don't know the process for getting reservations done, but something needs to be instituted that prevents this from happening to anyone else again. I probably could've went to another place, but my time had already been soured by the experience. I hope this finds the right department so that this step could be implemented.

I went thru Priceline to find a car to rent from the Oakland CA airport. I found a medium size suv for $23 dollars a day. I needed it for 7 days, unlimited miles so cool, I will book this deal. So I go online, book the reservation $156 for the week, go to pay in advance and when I got to check out it had gone up another $96 for all these little bulllshit things like tax and fees and dmv and a few more unheard of fees. So now the $156 one week rental fee has gone up to $252 before even seeing the car.

When I was booking the car I went thru and declined all their add ons. I declined theit added insurance. I declined their gas fill up. I declined their towing service. I said no to every one of their add ons. I said all I want is a car at the $23 per day as you advertised. That's all. Even though it was already up to $36 per day. So we go to pickup the car and even though it's already paid for they need to see the card which paid for the rental to verify she said.

So finally we are on our way when I get a notification from my credit card co. that Payless Rentals has hit my card with an additional $425.34 on top of the $257.61. They already charged me making this rental fee $684.34 or $97 per day. I'm like wtf so asked what this ridiculous charge is for and they email me a copy of the break down and all the extra items I refused were on there saying I accepted them all plus a break down of if I didn't return the car on time which that would be the last thing I would do came to $178 which they charged my card.

If anything I would get that car back to them way before it was due but not to early before the return date because you get billed for that. This place is a total nightmare and how they are allowed to stay in business is beyond me and I read where their parent company Avis is becoming the same way. I'm telling anyone who is even looking at booking a car from them don't do, read the reviews and if the BBB gives them a 3 FFF rating that is a definite red flag

I had a terrible experience with Payless Car Rental In Albuquerque and would strongly advise others to avoid them at all costs. I was returning a rental to the airport and, due to a freeway accident, was running tight on time. I pulled up and asked the check-in staff how much it would cost for them to fill the gas tank. He told me he didn’t know and said I should go inside to ask.

Inside, I was met by an incredibly rude agent who told me it was $10 per gallon—which is outrageously overpriced. I immediately told them I’d prefer to fill the tank myself, as I was being told the charge only after already arriving. But they refused to allow it. They claimed the car had already been “checked in” and wouldn’t give me the keys back, even though I had just walked inside.

To make matters worse, the tank was almost half full when I returned it (it’s a RAV4 with a 14.5 gallon tank), but they charged me $107 to top it off. That math doesn’t even come close to adding up, and it felt completely predatory. It felt like a total scam. There was zero transparency, no customer service, and absolutely no flexibility. I got overcharged for gas in a way that felt dishonest and predatory. I will never rent from Payless again—and I recommend others don’t either. There are plenty of rental companies that won’t treat you like this.

Be mindful at the desk when picking up the car. I do not have much experience with car rentals and feel like I was taken advantage of. I was charged an extra 100$ that I was unaware of after I returned the car. I had to call and figure out what the charge was for, which was liability insurance. The way the salesman worded it, I was unaware that it was an extra charge. He never said the price. I assumed liability was included in the original agreement. Lesson learned for me.

I am writing this review after a deeply frustrating and disappointing experience with Payless Car Rental. What was supposed to be a simple, supportive rental during an emotional trip to visit my uncle in hospice care turned into a stressful and costly ordeal.

Vehicle Condition: From the moment I received the car, it was clear it had not been properly cleaned or inspected. There was visible trash inside the vehicle—crumbs, wrappers, and debris—which I initially overlooked because I was emotionally overwhelmed and on a tight schedule. However, what could not be ignored was the fact that the car’s door was malfunctioning. On multiple occasions, it nearly opened while driving, which was incredibly dangerous and alarming.

Lack of Accountability: When I brought these concerns up with the rental manager, instead of offering an apology or a solution, I was immediately dismissed. The manager insisted that my claims were false solely because I hadn’t returned the car immediately after discovering the issues. I explained that I was visiting my terminally ill uncle in hospice care and was not in a position to drop everything and return the vehicle. Their complete lack of empathy or accountability was staggering.

Rental Extension & Charges: I was told by staff that they would extend my rental, and I relied on their word during an already fragile time. Instead, I was later charged over $400 in additional fees—an amount I was not clearly warned about and one that I now have to dispute with my credit card company.

Conclusion: Payless not only failed to provide a safe, clean, and functional vehicle, but they also showed a complete disregard for customer care, transparency, and basic decency. If you’re traveling under sensitive or high-stress circumstances, I strongly suggest using a more reputable rental agency. I will be filing a formal claim with my credit card provider and reporting this experience to appropriate consumer agencies.

Got a plane ticket to Sibiu Europe from Toronto via Priceline, and also reserved a rental car via Payless. Hello, The quick process of receiving the car in parking lot and signing a blank statement on the phone is to say the least not the way a rental agreement should be followed. We have rented this car in good faith from Payless and the car provided gave us headache the entire trip with messages that we have a flat tire. This car was to be serviced during our rental period, that will concludes that this car is not serviced properly, and was not safe to rent. We realized that this car had a flat on right front, and little to say that this is not the way a rental car should be provided to a customer. This is not the first time we have rented a car, but it is the first time when a car was returned, drove away by the renting company, and after an hour we are notified that a scratch happened.

We have paid the insurance for this car twice, once at the reservation time and another time with you, and after paying two times the insurance you send this message that the front bumper is seriously scratched on the right side. I am not sure how you define serious, but this scratch is merely a basic scratch, whether we did it or it was there to start with, as our pictures do not match the one you have sent us. I seriously think you hush us into a situation that you control at ease. Unprofessional team on that Sibiu branch… They want your money….

Where do I start? Got a plane ticket to SJC via Southwest, and also reserved a rental car via Payless through the Southwest Portal (they have a business partnership between Southwest and Payless). Quoted price is $370 for a standard 'full size' car. 1. Got to desk and was offered a 2 person mini convertible. Ummm... No. 2. They "found" some other car, which they said was full size (did not mention model). 3. They then told me the price was $392. I said "No, you quoted $370" and that is what I am paying. After much back and forth with the rep, the manager came along and said very irritated to the rep "Just give her the quoted price--do a manual adjustment." So I got the $370 price printed on my rental agreement.

    4. Walked upstairs to the car floor and floor manager up there said, "Here is your car," pointing to a giant (to me) full size Ford Bronco. Like a Jeep Wrangler, but 50% bigger in all directions--The hood itself was level with my neck. 5. I complained, saying I had ordered a 'full size" car, as that is what I am comfortable driving, and also I was concerned about mpg, considering CA's $5/gal gas price. I asked again for something approaching a "full size" car. 6. Floor manager found me a Ford Trax, which was a good size, took my paperwork, printed out new rental agreement, on which was the price of $681. 7. Ummm... No, I said, I was quoted $370. Please provide a $370 car. 8. Manager printed it again, final rental agreement stated Ford Trax, $370. Thought ordeal was over. Not so. Dropped off car with full tank, flew home.

    9. Get the visa bill from Payless for, you guessed it, $392. (See #3 above). Price was printed on my agreement as $370, and also emailed to me after I did checkout for the reservation, also as $370. 11. Called Payless. Explained whole deal. They said "Well you got another car type". I said "That's not my problem, I have a receipt." They hung up. 12. Called again, explained whole deal again, guy SAYS they will fix my bill. We'll see.

We rented a Mid-Size SUV through Southwest for April 3rd - 6th in San Diego. Upon arrival at the Payless Counter, the attendant offered us an upgrade for only an additional $10/day. Shame on me for not reading the details, but we were charged an additional $40/day, I guess I’m too trustful. When we went to receive the vehicle, it was not an upgrade. The attendant in the lot told us this was the vehicle he had cleaned for us earlier that morning. The counter attendant also continued to say, over 4 different times, "you wanted the insurance?", and "I have you down for the full coverage", I had to insist several times that we declined the insurance. The overall experience was very, very shady. To top it off, I had temporarily misplaced the rental keys at our resort, when I asked the concierge if anyone had turned them in, he asked which rental company.

When I told him Payless, he went on a 10-minute rant about being an ex-employee and to make sure I read all the paperwork and fine print because they are encouraged as employees to be deceptive. Again, shame on me for not doing my due diligence but shame on Payless (AND AVIS) for being this type of company. We travel over 12 times per year for competitive softball and I will never use Payless or any of its affiliates (Avis or Budget) again, due to this experience. I've already cancelled 2 future reservations.

4/22/25: We recently traveled to Colorado and were in need of a SUV to accommodate 2 adults and 2 children with enough room for luggage and ski equipment. When issued the SUV, we noticed NO floor mats throughout the entire vehicle. Well in Colorado, in March, the conditions for clean floors are not ideal. We left the facility and headed to Keystone CO. Three notable safety concerns were "over-looked" from Payless. 1) The hood was NOT latched and after noticing the hood flapping around on the highway, we needed to pull over to re-latch it. Definitely could have caused an accident. 2) The tires were grossly over-inflated to 47 psi (the normal was supposed to be 36), another serious problem while driving through the mountains! 3) There was very low coolant in the vehicle, and we needed to add more from our condo's maintenance supervisor. None of these concerns were address from Payless.

Once turning the car back in after 1 week of driving/skiing, we got an email stating we were being charged an addition $125 cleaning fee. We asked to send pictures and descriptions of what the additional charges were from. The "pictures" provided where 1) dust particles around the mileage indicator. 2) dirt/rock on the floor in the back seat from shoes- NO FLOOR MATS to assist in keeping the floors clean. Picture 3) and 4) were of the 3 row seats folded and roller marks from luggage being place in/out of the car. If these are the reasons for an additional $125 added for "cleaning" when Payless failed to provide adequate accessories to assist (floor mats!), then maybe the "RENTAL" business is not for them!! We rent vehicles frequently and have NEVER had this problem/issue before. Never this rip-off place again!

I waited in line at the Payless desk in Phoenix for 3 1/2 hours with a toddler. I was told I was not able to cancel my reservation without forfeiting the entire cost. Since the wait was so ridiculous, the other customers and I took turns going to other car rental counters to compare prices and the costs were not that much lower. A few customers decided to rent with someone else anyway, and left the line which was the only fast movement we saw all day.

This was my first experience with Payless and I think it 's safe to say that my take-away (and everyone else in Phoenix that day) was NEVER AGAIN. The only reason I didn't go with another company is my sister booked the car for me and my rational brain kept saying, "it can't be much longer or no one would ever book with them". When I finally reached the front of the line the employee, who was very kind, said it wasn't high season-this was pretty standard for them. Appreciated the honesty at least. Do not book with them, if your time is valuable at all.

Customer facility charge $6 per day making $24, late fee $20, energy recovery $2.40, MA excise TX reimb $16.46, 4.50 for transportation recovery... then sub total tax of 6.25%, city surcharge %10 and police training fee $2 then another toll and fuel services per day 59.96 totaling $417.94 for a 4day rental 🙄...like my flight from MD to BOSTON, MA was cheaper than this... this is just highway robbery...

Three customer care gave 3 different reasons for this charges, one said the $59 was for tolls, second one said because my contract hasn't closed, he can't do anything to help me and the 3rd said $129 was charges for bringing the car 4 hrs later than I said I would return it even though I had requested for an extension at the time of me picking up the rental. Re: Payless Car Rental Company, I am writing to express my outrage and disappointment at the unacceptable experience I had with your company during my recent car rental. Firstly, when we arrived at the pickup location, we were asked to select a car from a specific row, only to find that the car we were supposed to pick up was not even in the slot. This happened not once, but twice, wasting precious time and causing frustration. To make matters worse, when we finally got into the second vehicle, we discovered that there was no key fob in the car. This is a basic oversight that should never happen, and it's shocking that your company could be so careless.

But the cherry on top was when we were stopped by the police just 2 miles from the airport because the car we were driving had an expired out-of-state tag. This was not only embarrassing but also caused a significant delay to our journey, putting us over an hour behind schedule. What's even more appalling is the nonchalant attitude of your staff when we complained about these issues. They seemed utterly unbothered and told us that no compensation or offset would be offered. It's clear that customer satisfaction is not a priority for your company.

To add insult to injury, when I called your customer service to report these issues, I was met with indifference and given the same unacceptable response. It's clear that your company is not interested in making things right or providing a decent customer experience. I demand a formal apology and compensation for the time and inconvenience caused by your company's incompetence. I expect a prompt response and resolution to this matter. Sincerely,.

You're frustrated, angry, and can't believe you've wasted so much time and energy just trying to get someone on the phone, from the right dept! Beware! They will smile while overcharging you for things you didn't agree to or don't need. And if the overcharge wasn't bad enough, the experience and lack of professionalism is mind boggling. They gave me a car that was already rented out. I mean really? I wasted another 1hr at the airport trying to get another car (they could have just given me an upgrade for the trouble, but no!). Waited some more for a infant car seat, and then some more for one that wasn't broken!...

I can't make this stuff up! A nightmarish experience that took over 2hrs at the airport when it should have been more like 20-30min... and then having to endlessly dispute the overcharge fees for that car seat among other charges until I was blue in the face!! So many 1 star reviews for a reason! Needless to say, I'll never use them again and just trying to warn the next person that renting from Payless will have you paying more! It's not worth the headache!

Wife verbally declined insurance as our home / auto policy covers rental cars. The sales person at desk had her initial that we wanted insurance. When we notice the charges after we returned the vehicle they accused us of trying to scam them by trying to get free insurance after the fact. Total misrepresentation, and terrible customer service. Stay as far away from this company as possible.

I rented a car for 28 days from Paphos airport Cyprus, Within the first 24 hours of the rental after only having driven from the airport to the hotel, (20km) the electrics failed which made the car unusable. I called the assist line and was told to wait in my hotel for a technician to call. They called and came to the hotel a few hours later. They said they'd need to exchange the car, so made all the checks and switched vehicles. When I arrived home 29 days later I saw a new charge of 15.80 on my credit card, I enquired and was told it was for petrol consumed on my original car, (That I'd had only driven to the hotel - which malfunctioned and was un-drive-able.)

When the original car was collected from my hotel the petrol gauge was still on full. I wrote and complained. The car was un-usable and still had a full tank - so obviously whoever collected it drove it somewhere to be fixed then back to the airport - which all used petrol, then the gauge was read. So claiming that 15.80 of petroleum was used in one short trip is outrageous. I can’t accept being penalised for a vehicle we couldn’t use within 24 hours of the rental. Especially as even if I'd wanted to I couldn't drive it to a petrol station. I have always followed the contract details on every vehicle hire.

Payless should be apologising for my wasting a 1/2 day of my vacation waiting for their faulty car to be exchanged - Not making a money-grab for a few euros from a customer who over the past 14 months has spent more than 1300 euros on car hire from their company. It’s totally outrageous, and I'd highly recommend any future customers beware - as it seems they can simply go into your bank account and take whatever they want.

I rented a vehicle thru CarRentals.com. Keep in mind I have rented thru them many times and had nothing but a good experience. Now this time it was Payless. Ok I can do this, Well I rented a Tahoe. When I got to Phoenix Airport and stood in small line! It did not go fast, anyway when I got to the agent they had a Arcadia for me and I said what about the Tahoe???? "We don't have them." Ok ending up getting a Armada, Then The insurance I had purchased was no good at Payless, So I bought theirs at 65 dollars a day. The Vehicle was filthy inside the windshield was just a full of smug. Contacted customer No help. I would never rent from PAYLESS. They are terrible, pay more anywhere and you will be glad.
