Rented out of Denver arriving mid-afternoon on Sat and turning in same time. Easy airport experience and checkin - no upselling; delays; etc. Car exceeded expectations - reserved Mazda CX5 or equivalent for 2 adults; 2 kids; bags for week of skiing and ski bag w kid skis. Car was top-end...leather seats; heated seats - front and back; all safety features including headsup display. Only lacked Nav, Apple carPlay or Google. Clean, low mileage. Price was 60% of major brands. Combination of easy experience; high-quality vehicle; and great price vastly exceeded my expectations and gets 5 star review.
San Diego Payless (airport) charged me for an upgrade, even though I didn't request one, returned the car on day 2 to get the car I originally requested. Also, charged me for insurance that I said I didn't need, and told them 4 times when I returned the car that I didn't want their insurance and they now refuse to reimburse me for the insurance costs! They said I didn't show proof of insurance, even though they NEVER requested it! So frustrating! So, even though the bill shows estimated cost of 501.97, the estimated original cost = 795.68, they never gave me any refund until I made a phone call to request it! Never ever use Payless... You end up PAYING MORE!!
We used Capital One Travel to rent a car while visiting Denver. We picked up our car and took out all the “extras” so we wouldn’t get nailed with a “scratch”. It tripled the price of the car. I was fine with it as I expected to get gouged. Here is the kicker…We retuned the vehicle on time (technically 2 hours early), full tank of gas (have the receipt) and hopped on the shuttle. No one came out to “receive” the vehicle and we followed the instructions to leave the keys in the vehicle. We left the vehicle and followed the guy to the shuttle.
Fast forward 3 days, I received a charge on my cc for over 1,000.00 followed by an email saying I didn’t return the vehicle. I tried calling immediately and was hung up on multiple times and was told to contact a fake #. I finally got a hold of someone who took down my info and concluded the conversation with “you should really take pictures of you dropping off the car”. What inking of businesses model is this?!?! They obviously didn’t log the car in properly and I am now suspected of stealing it?!?! Payless!!!! Shame on you!!!! Now I just sit and wait to see if they “find” their car….
This was the worst experience that I’ve had with a car rental company. I was never told of any additional charges for an “upgraded” car that I didn’t know I was receiving. Customer service basically hung up on me when I called to discuss the issue. BEWARE of this company and the sketchy and shady ways they do business.
I have never written a review before but feel that people's safety is at risk by renting from this company. We reserved an SUV from the Denver location. Despite calling a day ahead to make sure that they had the vehicle we reserved, we were informed that they no longer had a vehicle of that size (this was after an hour long wait on line) and we were given a Jeep instead. If we had all 4 of our original party, we never would have fit in the car with all of our luggage and skis. During the drive to Breckenridge, it started snowing and we were skidding all over the road almost colliding with several cars (even when going at 10 miles an hour). We had to keep pulling over to let other cars pass as we were the only vehicle on the road with this problem. When we finally got to Breckenridge in one piece our vacation was further ruined by the absolutely useless customer service and roadside assistance. Do not rent from this company. They rent death traps.
I reserved a car online from Payless for my trip to San Diego and chose the slightly higher rate so I could cancel if necessary. I arrived at the counter and was told that since I had stated a 10:30 arrival and it was 12:30 they had put my reservation into the no show category and it was no longer valid. I am a senior citizen who had left my home 10 hours prior and was disheartened to hear this. The clerk said they had very few cars left but after a lot of friendly talk he found one although he couldn't give me the rate I had reserved at. He started at $35 a day and then because he was "nice" he reduced it to $30 a day. He showed me the contract with that figure on it.
Long story short - I returned the car and when I got home came across the contract. My original reservation totaled $273.00 and in the end I was charged $687 - both for my original contract and for the one drawn up at the counter. Trying to get through to an actual person is near impossible but will never rent from this company again.
My husband & I rented a Payless vehicle in Kauai in July 2021. Upon checking out the vehicle we found small damage and reported it to the attendant. The damage was noted on the rental agreement. When we returned the vehicle, there were no attendants to assist us, so we followed their instructions for the return of the vehicle. Now, it is 4 months later and because we did not take out their "waiver" insurance we are being charged for damages to said vehicle, without any documentation. We have requested pictures of said damages, but they have refused to supply any. Ironically, the damage charges are equal to the "waiver" insurance we did not take out. We thoroughly checked over our vehicle before returning it and other than the damage which existed at pick up, there were no marks or damages to the vehicle.
We rented a car in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They gave us a car with the wrong air pressure. We travel from San Juan to Ponce which is almost 2 hours away in a dangerous expressway at night. Only to find out the next morning that all 4 tires were overfilled. According to the manufacturer the tires were supposed to be filled up to 32 pounds. If you look at the photo that I’m providing, the tires had an excess of air. 35, 41, 46 and 47. This could have been deadly. We are 2 elderly women traveling in a dangerous expressway at night in a bumpy road. We called the company several times and they never answered or hung up. When we return the car a week later and confronted them with this issue, they asked us, "Why didn’t you check the car before leaving the place." Absolutely unacceptable. They are the ones responsible to rent cars that are up safe to drive.
I am mad as a hornet by the crap I have been put through by the dishonest den of thieves at Payless Car Rental. Overcharged 50% from my reservation rate email and that didn’t occur until well after 30 days from returning the car. Then after I complained to them about the ** charges, they decided to add another $1,100 in false damages charge to my credit card as retribution for complaining, but not until a full 44 days after returning the car and 2 weeks after challenged them about the rental overcharge. They refuse to provide photos of the non-existent damage, nor will they provide an invoice from a vendor to fix said mysterious late appearing damage without any evidence. Anyone who does this a thief.
I had to file a dispute with my credit card company to get the overage reversed and then I had to file a fraud charge with my credit card company to get the subsequent fake damages charge removed. Oh and of course they added on roadside protection fees, which I explicitly declined. If this is how you have to make your stockholder dividends then you’re a bunch of losers.
The business associate at the Miami airport was very friendly and helpful, and even though I didn't get the car from them they did their best to solve the problem. But the real problem is carRentals.com, there is no way to get someone who can really help you there.
The process of picking up the rental was horrible. The service agent did not know what he was doing. Another service agent became angry with him when he tried to rent me a vehicle that had already been rented - she walked up to him and literally snatched the keys from his hand and scolded him for renting a car that was already rented. Then, he became extremely difficult with me, insisting that I initial the form without reading the sections that I was required to initial, insisting "Just initial the form, you are paying anyway." Further, the form printed extremely light (running out of ink?). And...the vehicle was not washed - was filthy inside, bug splatter all over the front and the windshield, and smelled of weed. On the return, there was no one to accept the vehicle. I asked one male who was "working" but was told "everything is fine, just board the shuttle." Caveat Emptor!
Renting from Payless rental was the worst experience ever... I initially had a reservation with Enterprise but changed it last minute because Payless had it cheaper... Well babyyyy that was a bad idea... When I arrived to pick up my rental the sign directed us to Avis car rental and I literally waited in line for over 2hrs. The car was perfect but upon returning the vehicle again a sign directed us to Avis. The guy at Avis took my information and stated, "Once a Payless representative arrives I will have them close you out."
We'll days later I never received a receipt and I kept calling and they informed me it takes 48hrs to get a receipt. This morning comes and I was becoming pissed so I called again and the young man informed me that not only had they not closed me out, but they were still charging me yet the vehicle had already been rerented to someone else. He informed me he has to process a refund which take 3-7 business days and I should have the receipt shortly. If it wasn't for me bugging them they would have continued to charge my card... Horrible customer service!
What a terrible company. I went to Aruba with 9 family members and needed a van to accommodate a party this size. I made reservations with Payless several months in advance. I confirmed reservation a week prior to arrival. Agent confirmed vehicle was going to be here when I arrived. I offered to pay in advance to assure the vehicle would be there. I was assured it would be there without paying in advance. When I arrive in Aruba and proceeded to car rental I was informed the vehicle was not there and company had no vehicle for me. Payless worker told me they overbooked and I was left with nothing. I had to go to other car rental agents at airport and had to rent two cars at a much higher cost. A bait and switch would have been better than what happened to us. Please avoid this company at all cost. Worth paying a bit more to a respectable and reliable company.
We were asked specifically what time our flight got in when we booked the reservation assuming that meant to make sure that someone would be ready to check us in, that was not the case... When arriving at the counter at about 1:40pm after put flight I waited almost 20 minutes for someone to come to the desk at which point I called the 1-224-220-0604 at 2pm which phone records can prove at which point approx 8-10 minutes later I was finally able to talk to a person who I quote said "if no one is there go to the Budget or Avis counter and they can help you". So after waiting another 10-14 minutes in that line i finally get to the counter only to be told that "they can't help me, she is at lunch go back to that counter".
Mind you there was ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING ON OR AT THAT COUNTER STATING THE EMPLOYEE WAS AT LUNCH not that it would have been appropriate for me to sit there for 40 minutes waiting on someone to come out when I had a confirmed reservation for the time of my flight arrival. So at this point I have been on the ground up Chicago an hour and a half and can't even get my rental car.... She comes out at this point as I'm at the other counter so I go over there only to be told that she "came back 6 mins early from her 30 min lunch break" which maddened even more because if she walked in the back at the second I arrived at the counter the timeline still didn't match. It's not her fault she is the only one there while every other counter had a minimum of 3 employees at the desk at any point in time but it was completely an awful and uncalled for experience.
This is the worst car rental company I've ever rented from. The Payless company has no affiliation with the San Diego Payless car rental. Payless says they're an independent company; however, they have the Payless name and should stand behind any theft, or called fraud, that goes on with this company. I wish I would've read the reviews before renting from Payless. They overcharge for rental and add on charges that you declined when you rented the car. Now I'm having a hard time getting my money back and may never see the refund they owe me. Terrible customer service at the Payless, affiliated with Avis, customer service number.
Our contract said 7 seats, we were given 6. The next day, we called to make a swap. After several phone calls to the company, even being hung up on, we received no help. This was rotten of Payless because when we picked up the vehicle, we were assured by their staff it was a 7-passenger vehicle. (We discovered we didn't have enough seat belts when we picked up our remaining party later). This alone ruined our trip.
However, when we returned the vehicle we were notified that the floor mats were what they called "damaged." The company sent photos--if you were to review these photos, it would be clear that the mats were not damaged, they were dirty. And the mats should have been dirty, we had the car for 12 days. Payless adds and takes away whatever they want in their agreement. Do not rent from this company or you will eventually regret doing business with them.
After refusing gas service, I returned car with a full tank. Also, I have a gas receipt printed afternoon before return. An unauthorized $62.38 was on the receipt that I noticed after landing in Az. I can't find any way to rectify the bill at time of this review.
I did rent a car from Payless to drive in California. They charged me extra $250 "flat fee zone" at the pick up since I wanted to drive the car from San Diego to San Francisco. Even though the rental was unlimited mileage, but they are small company and you have to pay extra fee to drive the car in different zone (not true for bigger rental company). The car was new but audio system reset every two hours and once we were in a rest area in route 5, the car didn't start. I was on phone for their road assistant line for hours but no response. I found my own road assistant company to help! Overall very bad experience! Don't rent a car from payless and be aware of hidden fees for driving the car in different zone in a state.
First, I never write reviews but feel people need to consider renting from this company. I had a few bad experiences. The check engine light came on after about 15 minutes of driving, of course meaning I had to go back to the airport. Also, the driver's side mirror was faulty. I called about 15 times but could reach a representative. Fast forward, I get my bill and find out I’ve been charged for additional insurance. The guy helping me at the counter read through what I was signing since I didn’t have the best glasses on and couldn’t see well. So much for honesty. I’ll never rent from them again no matter how much I’ll spend with another company.
I had prepaid a car to pick up in Nashville. When we went to pick the car up they said Expedia never paid them. I was so mad my husband put another car on his charge card. We never picked up a car that I paid for on my charge card. I went with my receipt in hand from Expedia that I paid them and my charge card bill. Showing I was charged. Payless refused to honor it. They just said Expedia never paid them. Since then it's been 2 months and nothing refunded or done. Expedia said they could never get ahold of Payless to verify we never got the car we were charged for so they would not refund our money. So I tried for many days to get ahold of Payless. All numbers and emails say no longer in service. Or does not exist. DO NOT USE PAYLESS RENTAL CARS. I even question Expedia at this point. Really hard time getting to talk to someone with their company as well.
Payless Car Rental does everything in their power to manipulate you into purchasing extra things you don’t need. Don’t agree to anything they are offering! They are high class scammers! It’s a business you can’t trust. Look else where!
When I tried to pick up the car I'd reserved at Payless at the San Diego airport, the price was over double the price I'd been quoted when I reserved it. The guy said it was for insurance. I had to insist, then threaten to cancel before he reduced the charges--though not to what I'd been quoted.
I booked a mid-size car in San Diego a week before my trip. When arrived the mid-size wasn’t available. I was willing to take a smaller car for the same rate. There were no smaller cars either. They offered me an upgrade to a full-size car for 29.95/day. That was the only option. I should not need to pay $398 extra because they didn’t have cars they agreed to provide.
I picked up the car in LV, NV. I arrived a day early and asked how much to add a day. They told me $200 even though 4 days was only costing me $280. I had to pay for Uber to/from rental car pickup and come back the next day; strike one. When I picked up my vehicle I noticed the tires were bald. I mentioned this and they told me it was the only car they had for me. I reluctantly took the vehicle. The vehicle literally had illegal tires; below the wear bar. I drove I-15 from LV to St George, UT. All freeway driving. The vehicle was unable to go over 70mph without the AC beginning to blow hot air. I called a number in my paperwork and was told there was nothing they can do and call roadside if the vehicle breaks down.
I got to my destination and borrowed a friend's car for the remainder of the trip. I was not able to use the car. I returned the car unharmed and three months later received notice I was being charged for "tire damage" to the tune of $207.76. When I called them to ask what tire damage and explained to them I had expressed concern about the tires they told me it is my responsibility to prove there wasn't tire damage otherwise I would be charged. What!? Never again will I rent from this company and pray you won't either!
For a recent trip to San Diego I rented a car through Payless Cars using Expedia. Total cost was $381 for four days. When I went to pick up the car the agent told me it was only a 2-door and too small for three people (not true, Versas are 4 doors), and he would give us an upgrade for $7/day. I said sure, fine. He asked if I wanted extra insurance and I said no thanks. My reading glasses were in my luggage, but I signed the form, trusting him, and we went on our way. Once I could read what I had signed, I saw he had charged us $75/day extra for the car grade and added two types of insurance, making my total $885 instead of $381. Payless refuses to reimburse me the difference. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY EVER!
I will never rent a car from Payless Car Rental again. I have never seen worse. The driver picking up at the PHL airport was very nice and helped with the bags but was lead footed on the gas and the brakes. Since all the seats were side-sitting it was a lot of jerking around. But the real reason I'm here is to address the car. It was DIRTY! It had filthy upholstery. There was trash leftover from the previous renter. And it was damaged! The rear fender had a tear in the plastic bumper. And the charged an extra $200 over the $395 claiming it was a refundable deposit. It makes sense that it's a low cost subsidiary of Avis which in itself is not an exemplary company.
I rented a car which broke down during my vacation. I wasted a whole day waiting for a tow truck, then only got a jump, which didn't work. So I call for another tow truck to take the car back to the airport, luckily only 20 minutes away. THEY CHARGED ME $218.OO for the jump that didn't even work!! HOW is this my responsibility??!! I'm disgusted, and fighting the charge but also waiting for them to charge me for the tow!!!
I have been contacted via Facebook and a new reservation was created by customer service with understanding my original price will be honored at close-out.
A confirmation number was received by email for my reservation. The system did not recognize confirmation number when I attempted to change details a week later. Same thing when calling customer service. How can a car rental send a confirmation number if a computer glitch occurred in a previous step that prevents the confirmation number from being recorded in the system? When I called they would not create a new reservation at the same price.
We were flying to Istanbul and rented a car in Payless because it was the only kiosk working at 5:00 a.m. The car we rented was disgusting, dirty and not clear at all. The seatings were full of dirtiness and it was very uncomfortable sitting there. The first car we got had so many problems and the first day the engine went off in a bridge. The second time it went off in Bursa and couldn’t turn on, around 2 h away from our destination and they need more than 6 hours to change the cars. The second car was worse, except dirtiness and horrible interior, it had problems with tires which costed us around 50$ to fix and the Payless company didn’t return them to us. At the end of our trip they accused us that we lost first car booklet and had to pay 60$ extra. Summary, I will never rent a car from Payless company and wouldn’t recommend to anyone because they are terrible and are waste of money.
I don’t typically write reviews but our experience with Payless Car Rental was so terrible. The representative was rude and added additional charges making us feel we had no choice. Our initial quote was doubled by the time we finished. It was very late and rentals were closing so we didn’t have any other options. The car was not a mid size car and it was obviously not cleaned after the prior use. The interior was dirty and trash had not even been picked up. We thought we would be saving money but ended up paying much much more for a small dirty vehicle. We will never use Payless Car Rental again!
Payless Rental is absolutely disgusting and mislead you into charges that you didn’t originally agree to. This was my second time renting with them, in better faith, after a horrible first experience and they were even worse the second time around. During a time of Covid-19, you would think they’d protect the health of their customers, but money is their only motive. I was given a vehicle with vomit, left over baby wipes, bib tucked in-between the seats, and menstrual blood on the front passenger seat.
After returning the vehicle in exchange for another one, I was given yet another dirty vehicle...sticky, not vacuumed, and with a strong stench. The customer service desk only offered me a few sanitizing wipes for the inconvenience. A proper cleaning in-between customers just isn’t a priority to them. To add insult to injury, they added an extra $15 insurance coverage that I did not agree to in my online reservation. I already agreed to two other coverages and did not agree to a third coverage. They refused to refund me for their mistake. I do not recommend this company to anyone! Both of my issues happened at the Miami airport and Miami Beach locations.
I reserved and received a confirmation through Budget for a Toyota 4Runner. Budget switched the reservation to Payless which we specifically avoided. The clerk advised that they never rented 4Runners.
I rented a car with Payless Car Rental in Phoenix AZ to drive 2 hours to get home. They did not have a payless where I was visiting so I could not even turn in the vehicle if I wanted to. PCR didn't even tell me or notify me of this. I had an American Airline special financing card which I have never had before but it has helped me make payments on the airline tickets I purchased. I did not need a rental at the time of purchasing airline tickets. After speaking to the PCR rep at the counter she reassured me I could use the AA card, I did not have it in my possession to show her since it was getting mailed to me. She said once I get it to call PCR and update the payment method. I tried calling after getting the rental placed onto my debit card, they said they could not update the payment until I turned in the rental.
I waited, I turned in the car and the AA card turns out it is not in fact a credit card, but this whole time PCR was not clear the whole time on what kind of card I had, and never asked me if it was a major credit card. I should have done my research but needed a rental ASAP and got it. I wish PCR would have been more transparent on what kind of card I had instead of telling me that yes in fact I could use that card, when I could not, so they assumed the whole time. Now I'm paying over $600 for a rental on my debit card that I could not afford from the beginning. Also, the car was a 2019 or 2020 and when I drove 60-80 mph on the freeway it smelt like something was burning under the hood, I called PCR and told them but since there was no PCR where I was, they could not even give me a rental.
They need to be affiliated with other rental companies in the area due to this, they just told me roadside assistance can help me and/or they can come get the car. The Bluetooth was super crappy, when I would plug my phone charger into the USB, it keep stopping the music and would say, "No supported files"!!?? Then I used the cig charger and it was a bit better but the BT would disconnect ALL THE TIME! It was extremely frustrating. I think anyone enjoys listening to music while driving but for it being a newer car it was ridiculous. I tried to delete all the other phones that were added prev and it wouldn't let me. Brakes were rusted and squeaky. DON'T GO TO PCR. THEY ARE NOT GOOD FOR ANYTHING!!
We rented from Payless Car rentals for a trip to Costa Rica. First, the site claims car rentals are direct with airport so we went with Payless. This ended up to not be the case and the payless office is some 10 miles from the airport. Once they get you there the fun begins. Our reasonable rental went up in cost over $700! As we stood there in disbelief we could here every other person at the counter get the same explanation. Young couples on honeymoon being charged over 1200 American dollars for a car! Take it or leave it they say.
The entire fiasco is over liability insurance. Although the payless website clearly states a 5k or 10k hold can be put on your cc to cover any such disaster they refuse to follow the corporate website. I spoke with another customer in the parking lot that explained they had an 80/20 policy which we ended up being forced to take or they would drop us back off at the airport. Then, they have you sign a credit card slip with damages not filled in. They take an imprint of your card on the page and demand you sign it.
I'm waiting for a 20k charge to show up with damages on it and they have a signed copy that they can fill in with anything they feel at anytime! My wife upgraded the car during the reservation and they ended up giving us a a five year old Nissan Versa with no hubcaps. When we pulled into our resort the RIU you should have seen the looks! Normally I'm not a material guy but even that pushed my limits. The car was a beater. It had been in a river or two and the instrument panel was hardly legible due to being so foggy. It had barely enough power to get out of its own way. We travel about 6 times a year and this was an unforgettable experience to say the least. I would never trust payless car rental again.
This company should be shut down. They are not safe and DO NOT INSPECT THEIR VEHICLES!!! They will make UNAUTHORIZED CHARGES on your credit card well after your rental. The cars are in poor condition.
DON'T EVER BOOK A CAR WITH PRICELINE OR PAYLESS CAR RENTAL. I was told that my car was to be picked up at Orlando Airport. When I arrived they told me I had to go to Kissimmee. I fought with them from 830 am until 1pm. The man at Kissimmee knew I was at the airport. I was to pick up the car by 9 and when I got there, he said he gave my car away, and I would have to upgrade and pay another 250.00! I had no choice since I had already paid 40.00 for Uber to get us there. This car was paid for and confirmed! Please don't rent from Priceline or Payless! I feel it was a bait and switch, we should have never had to pay more for their mistake! They should have upgraded us at no extra cost! Don't trust them! It was a scam.
I rented a car in San Diego for 2 days. The security deposit is $500! I got a 2017 Elantra and the interior is very dirty. I returned my car on time without any scratches. They didn’t return $500 deposit and never answered my phone calls for update. Don't be a victim for this scam.
Rented a car on Expedia for Payless at Atlanta airport. Rental was for a minivan. Went to the counter to pick up the vehicle and the very rude customer service woman proceeded to tell me that we rented a truck and that if we wanted a van we would have a $350 upcharge. After showing her our agreement she insisted that we pay an upcharge. After trying to get a hold of somebody at Payless on the phone, she waived us overstating she put in my last name as my first name and had the wrong vehicle. We got our car.
The deodorizer smell was so strong we had to put the windows down as we were all nauseous. In addition, the car was extremely dirty which was surprising considering we are in the middle of a pandemic. The next morning when we all got in the car there was an overwhelming smell of **. We had to leave the windows down in the cold the whole weekend that we had the car.
When returning the car we reported to the person who we dropped it off with how the smell was horrific and how dirty the car was. She stated to call corporate. Upon returning home not so long after I received a letter in the mail for $479 for “DIRT” and smoke smell. This is completely absurd. Not only did we have the worst customer service I have ever experienced, Payless in NO WAY provided friendly efficient service and a clean car in which they say they strive for and I find it insulting that they would have the audacity to charge ME for a smoke-filled disgusting vehicle in which was overlooked by the previous client.
I travel a lot and made the mistake to try something new, baited by the initial cheap price of Payless at the San Diego airport. Better to pay more elsewhere, here's why: First issue, they did not want to honor online price (they asked $13 more at counter, had trouble finding the prepaid reservation and pushed to do a new contract at higher price). Then wanted $1000 deposit rather than normal $250. Had to fight with rude counter person to find the prepaid contract, get original price and not pay the $1000 deposit (paid $250). Told to sign there are no issues with the car before seeing car. When I complained person said, 'What do you care? You bought the collision waiver'. Next issue, 13 days into the contract I left keys in the car and the car auto locks. No sensor to protect from locking your keys.
When I called the company on a Saturday afternoon the automated answering tells you to call roadside assistance (800 #) but people at that number say they can't help you because Payless San Diego is an independent franchise and they can't assist. Payless sends you to an answering machine. Left message, no answer. Thus, car is stuck. Lucky I have an AAA with roadside. Will never use Payless as they should be really called 'Useless'. If they had polite people who later supported you, the initial price was good. The hassles are not worth it to me. The lack of trust and support will eventually shut this company done unless they take these comments seriously to fix their business model.
I was asked for a 250 dollar deposit and was told it would be refunded when I returned the car. The rep told me it would only be a pending chg. I’ve called 2x. It’s been 2 weeks and I was told they would have to investigate. Thieves!
I reserved a car with Payless car rental and had a confirmation number. They took the money from my credit card. That afternoon when I went to pick up the car they said “we have no more cars”. What??? The car I paid for should have been there, Duh!!! Nope, they had rented all their cars and left me stranded. I had to call the 800 number the next day to be refunded and it took 3 days for the refund. Worst experience in renting a car EVER! Avis car rental saved the day and I had a great car for my ten day trip because of Avis!!!
I've rented cars from them now for three years and had no problems until now! I rented a car on 09/17/2020-09/20/2020 Nashville TN Airport location. I arrived to pick up the car and had to walk 15 minutes to get to the location. When I arrived I only saw Avis and Budget so the Avis representative checked me in and also directed me to the car location. The car was great a 2020 Toyota Avalon. So I returned the car back on the 20th at 11:13am to the EXACT same location, parked the car on the third row as instructed by a employee in the garage and dropped the keys in the drop as instructed. Three days later I am getting charged a additional day and more! My rental total was 183.03. They charge my credit card 268.00 way more than a additional day.
I called the company customer service. Very RUDE. File the claim and they tell me, "We will look at the cameras and verify drop off and charges will be corrected." LIES. Two days later I get a email at 8:00pm at night saying charges are valid, I called customer service again a rude rep and he says, "We are not negotiating with you. It's valid. I suggest you call your credit card." So I hung up and did so. I also emailed the airport supervisor with no response at all.
I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in how this was handle and will not be renting again since I am a long time customer with the first time having a issue and this is how they handled it was very piss poor. AND WILL BE TELLING ALL my referrals I sent to not rent again and will put this on every review I can making me pay for a day I didn't have the vehicle is STEALING and doing this time of our country situation is very sad and disappointing. Also when I looked at the the receipt they have me down for a Toyota 4Runner the wrong vehicle as well. I will put this on every review I can.
I got to the airport and there was no one at the counter. No signs telling us where to go and what to do. After finally getting an answer to go to Avis/Budget the lady up there did not care to help us out. I finally get my car and it stunk like cigarettes and weed. Then I flip up the back seat and it was covered in ashes. I had to return the car only to find the person behind the counter did not know how to work the Payless computer system as he was an Avis employee (and I will say he had excellent customer service). However when the Payless employee finally showed up to the counter he too had no idea how to work his own system.
He then told the Avis employee that I just had to wait for another employee to wrap up their break and I just had to wait another 10 to 15 minutes which I did patiently. Then when they finally fix the computer to re-open my order so that I can get a new vehicle they decide to give me a Buick Enclave and that was an upgrade from what I had originally asked for. However the minute I get into this car it has a huge burn mark in the driver seat. It’s stunk like cigarettes too. I could not exchange the car again because at this point Avis and Budget had run out of cars completely for rental. And then I find that the plates were expired. And when I called Payless and left a complaint. They said, "Sorry. Nothing we can do about it." It’s my fault though. I got what I paid for. The name Payless might as well change to garbage.
First, when I arrived at the Payless counter noone was there. There was a sign instead that told me to go outside to the Payless kiosk in the rental car garage. No one was in the kiosk outside either! A woman got out of a car and came over to me and told me that even though I had reserved a car to rent from Payless (and was on time to pick up the car) there were NO CARS AVAILABLE. Not a one!!!! REALLY?!!! Needless to say, I had to rent a car from another company and pay the walk up cost!
Payless Car Rental in San Diego is running a bait and switch operation. The way they work is to put some exceptionally low prices out on the travel sites. I made my reservation through Hotwire. Then when you arrive they have a zero adjustment policy. If your rental time is at 4:00pm then you have to be there exactly at 4:00pm. I arrived four hours early. Then they claim they have no car for you and offer the switch. First they offered me a bigger car for a lot more money. Then they said they had to add a whole additional day of rental to get the car 4 hours early. In the end, they gave me a smaller car at a higher price than what I had the reservation for. They also are very pushy about paying for rental car insurance coverage and demand proof of insurance coverage if you refuse to buy. This is not an upfront organization. You are better to pay more and rent from one of the more respectable rental companies.
I booked a car thru. Booking.com and the reservation was with Payless. I've never rented with them before and the quote was for 3 days for $94.44 for the cheapest car. I arrived at Austin Airport, the woman tried to upsale me saying all small cars were gone and offered a mini-van and I said no. I declined all extra insurance and she looked very unhappy. When I returned the car, I was billed $141 for 2 days and 2 hours of rental. It turned out that (and this is NOT on the contract I signed) I was required to return the car by 3pm which I wasn't aware of. The agent didn't point this out for me.
Furthermore, nowhere on the contract did it say that if I returned the car later, I would be billed close to $10 per hour...I think the woman purposely didn't mention anything and anyway this was NOT on the contract. I tried to talk to the customer service and the guy just kept saying the billing was correct. So I was billed $141 for renting the cheapest car on the selection for 2 days and 2 hours. This company doesn't do business honestly. It should not exist. Apparently, it is part of Avis? I don't understand how company can run business like that. This happened on 3/4-3/6 at the Austin Airport. Booking.com ref. is available upon request.
Made a reservation online for Pick up at San Diego airport. Price seemed pretty reasonable and didn’t think anything of it. Big surprise when I got to the counter, the actual price increased by 100% and agent who was somewhat passive aggressive stated that CA law requires me to take insurance with them. Never heard of that since I have been renting cars for a decade. Since I am covered with my credit card and personal car insurance - I always waive insurance provided by the rental car company. Also to note this is not a requirement, however, counter agent positioned it as such and told him to cancel my reservation. Went to Enterprise instead, paid less and did not have to take insurance with rental car company. I would recommend any car rental company BESIDES Payless which is actually PAYMORE and deceptive practices.
I recently had my first and only experience with Payless. I arrived late due to a technical issue with the airlines. When I gave my confirmation number to the representative, his first comment was "We already gave that car away but I will get you another car but there is a charge of $150.00 that will be added". It just seemed to go downhill from there, he demanded that I take the insurance and I informed him that my company policy covers me on any rental vehicles. He demanded that I produce the pink slip and that I contact the company to confirm coverage.
I have rented cars from all the major leasing companies and have always declined coverage and they have accepted it. There was no way of getting around this fellow so I accepted the coverage and as soon as I did that he dropped the $150.00 charge? When all was said and done on the paperwork, I spent another 1/2 hour waiting for a car. I went thru Expedia and points and will never do that again. Again, it's NOT Payless at the end it's PAYMORE!!! Save time, money and aggravation and deal with the better known rentals companies.
Rented cars several times. Use their shuttle service from Philly always. Every employee I have dealt with has been courteous, professional, and most important... ON TIME! I've dealt with a Sue and Brielle via phone, and Michael and James in person. They are a perfect 10 for 10 with me! I always get the size car I order, always with at least a half tank and return it same way. No surprises on my card which I have experienced with other companies before finding Payless. I will never go to another. 5 stars all day!
I would give them 0 stars if I could post that way but since I must give them a star rating it is 1. Wish I would have done my research a little better about this company before I rented with them as I would have been able to avoid the headache that has come from this experience. Do yourself a favor and pay the extra money for a car with a better rental company.
There were unauthorized charges made to my credit card account. They made this charge, AFTER I had already paid in full for the car and dropped the car off. I couldn't get a hold of anyone at the airport to find out what the charges were for and had to make MULTIPLE calls to the "customer service" line. Once I finally got a copy of the invoice to see what the charges were, I found it was for PDW which I had declined along with all other insurance when I picked up the rental. I was told that I could start a dispute and I would have an answer within 42-78 (2-3 days) hours and should see the refund in that time to my account.
It has been 5 days and I haven't heard from anyone so to add to the inconvenience of this entire ordeal I had to call and cancel my credit card and request a new one and start a dispute with them. This entire ordeal has been an ABSOLUTE nightmare and I wouldn't wish this upon even my worst enemy. I will NEVER recommend or use Payless Car Rental ever again.
I filled out the customer satisfaction survey that they sent me and the response at the end of the survey is completely laughable because based on all of the reviews that I have read, dating back up to 4 years ago, they don't do anything to make improvements to the company. Here is the response at the end of the survey: "Thank you, your survey has been submitted. We appreciate your participation and feedback. We regularly make improvements to our service as a result of the valuable feedback we receive from our customers. We look forward to serving you in the future."
I reserved a full size car at the Philadelphia airport and this is the worst car rental experience I have ever encountered. I waited a full hour on the shuttle in freezing weather. I called and was rudely talked to and (Susan) hung up before I finished my question of how soon can I expect the shuttle That was the first red flag. Get to the counter and Susan continues her unprofessional rude attitude. She informed me they had no full size cars and offered me a van! I asked the purpose of a reservation and she responded “what kinda car you want!!!!” After the exchange I ask to be taken back to the terminal so I can find a car. I called the next day and asked to speak with the manager Sierra answered and ask why and refused to let me speak or leave a message she hang up!! I check Better Business to find they rated this company an F!! I can see why. This is a horrible horrible place for car rentals!!!
I rented a car over Christmas break and they overcharged by over the twice the amount I was quoted saying the car was returned on Jan 3rd with half a tank and at 8pm. I returned the car on Dec 29th at 9am with a full tank of gas. I have called and emailed numerous times without any response. Do not rent from this company.
Let me start by saying my original trip was a round trip flight LGA-DEN for a week. About 2 weeks or so prior to the date of the trip we had an event come up in Dallas so we decided to go there at the end of the trip. Flights were at this point very expensive. Renting a car was a no brainer based on price and the fact that we had bags to check.
We had no flight into Denver so we get to the airport terminal and proceed to the rental car bus pick up section where we were instructed via email to “Call for pick up from the direct line phone at the rental counter in the terminal, then proceed to island 4 for shuttle pick up.” Me along with several other people could not find such a phone anywhere (inside or outside)! The bus arrives by some miracle and we board with the driver less than thrilled with his job not saying a single word to anyone while carelessly tossing the bags onto the bus.
We get to the building without issue and proceed to the counter. I’m greeted by a female in a wrinkly untucked buttondown shirt. She asks me very directly “where are you going?”. I tell her Dallas and she says “why don’t you just fly there? You flew here!”. Does she not want my business? Why do I have to explain my reasoning for how I travel? Continuing throughout the conversation she was very short and quick like she would do anything to speed up the process. I was going to ask for 2 extra days with the vehicle to use in Dallas but I knew after just speaking to this employee for a few minutes I do not want to deal with this company any more than I have to. She tosses me the keys and says “Aisle 56. You’re all set”. No walk around the vehicle with me for damage or to ensure fuel level.
I get to my vehicle and do a walk around myself notating any damages with my camera. I get in the car and immediately notice it has not been cleaned at all on the inside. It had some sort of sauce on the driver door, by the radio, and on the passenger door. A previous rental agreement with someone’s personal information from Avis in the center console. A vape pen in the driver's door.
I arrive in a Dallas and drop off the car to the intake employees and proceed into the airport rental car building. Immediately upon entering I walk directly to the Enterprise counter and book a vehicle for 2 days in Dallas with an experience from the reception desk to the drive off immensely better than Payless. I can comfortably say I will NEVER use Payless Rental Car EVER again. Customer Service can be the most basic process and I promise I’m not looking to have my feet kissed by the employees but basic professionalism is expected. Spend a little more and go with a company more reputable. It’s worth it.
I rented a car over Christmas break and they did not return my car in the system. And I was given a receipt for $270.95 and they changed me for 850.05 saying my car was 6 days past due. When I was on the flight home and had returned the vehicle. I have waited the minimum 72 hours and still have not received my refund or have had anything fixed. I do not recommend renting from them. They are a fraud company. It’s a scam.
My husband rented a car over Christmas week. He was told to bring the car back with a full tank of gas. He gassed it up the night before we returned it at Chicago O'Hare airport. They emailed my husband that it was a gallon short and they were charging him over $80.00 dollars for 1 gallon of gas. He has been trying to speak to someone but nobody will return his call. DO NOT RENT FROM THESE CROOKS!!!
Booked a car through Orbitz with Payless in Turks & Caicos, several months in advance. Upon arrival, they had no cars available whatsoever, neither automatic no manual. I had to rent on site through another company, at about 3 times the original price. Payless cons travelers, booking attractive rentals and then redirecting to another shady operator.
Worst experience I have ever had in renting cars for the past 45 years. Quoted $420 for 4 days in Puerto Rico through Payless Car Rental in Carolina at the airport when it was reserved. Waited for over an hour to pick up the vehicle and was told at that time it would be $420 if returned with a full tank of gas. When the vehicle was returned the agents attempted to charged us for damage to the vehicle that was already present when it was given to us. Fortunately, my son had the presence of mind to take a video of the entire exterior of the vehicle before we took took possession of it.
When we showed them the video of the existing damage, they lost their argument for our paying for the damage. If we didn't have the video we would have been paying for damage that had only been done to the vehicle. Additionally, with added fees that nobody can clearly define for me our charges ended up being $537.57 instead of the agreed up $420. Over $100 of added fees that were never divulged until the vehicle was returned. Avoid Payless Car Rental at all costs!
They are PayMORE not payLess at all. They are dishonest. They put lower rates on the Internet and when I went to pick up the car, they made it the most expensive rate! They wanted to force me to buy their insurance for $20 a day and they insisted that the insurance is mandatory (they did not accept my insurance with Credit Card). I checked with 3 other car rentals, all said it is not mandatory and the max price for insurance is $14 a day! One of those 3 car rentals offered me $11 a day (If I wanted as optional)!
I recently rented a car for our family vacation. Shortly after I begun driving the car, a low tire pressure light came on. We stopped at a gas station to add air. The light would come on about twice a day. We were visiting gas stations twice a day to top the air off. Sometimes air was free/sometimes it was $1.50. After becoming frustrated with this activity, we contacted Customer Service. They advised us to return the car to McClellan-Palomar airport. It was late in the day, and they were closing soon.
Upon arrival, they advised that they do not handle Payless cars. The next day we attempted to contact Customer Service again. As we were close to the San Diego airport, we asked if we could swap out the car at that location. The agent told us we needed to return the car to Ontario, California (near Los Angeles). This was not feasible as we were not planning to go to LA. I am very disappointed that this could not be resolved. I have never encountered such an experience from a car rental agency before.
This has been the most difficult experience I have ever had disputing charges on a car rental. I have rented cars for years. Payless charged me 4 x times the amount of my rental and won't credit my card. You call their Customer "care" number and you are sent to a call center in Mexico where nobody knows anything and can't resolve your problem. I submitted my complaint online as well and nobody deals with that either. PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND NEVER RENT FROM PAYLESS. PAY A LITTLE MORE AND YOU WILL BE HAPPIER.
I made a reservation for Thanksgiving day and as I was headed to the airport to pick up the rental I realized I inadvertently reserved it for 9pm instead of 9am. Oops my bad so I had to hurry up and fix it, the original company Hertz is who I was going through didn't have what I needed for that time so I chose Payless. I rent all the time but I have never used them, hey can't hurt to try. Just needed the car for one day. It was $87. Got the car. Asked about a state discount knowing good well the offer. The guy at the desk said no and I showed up on our company website they did and he looked dumbfounded. Whatever. I didn't have time for all that. It was only $87. I said it's okay. I book out through the company website next time.
Fast forward. I drop off the car, 2 days later my credit card is charged $227. And I've called continuously to no avail as to why I have those charges, no damage was done. 3 days later I finally get someone, he takes down my info days and says he's escalating my call and that someone will call me. It's a week later and nothing. I'm pissed and I've called back only to get a recording. Never again will I ever rent from them.
On November 29 at San Diego Airport I went to Payless to pick up my reserved compact car (reservation through Payless) for a 5 day rental. The customer service woman went into a long, hard sell to get me to upgrade the car and get daily liability insurance, increasing the cost by more than $120. After 10 minutes of arguing, I canceled the reservation and went to another agency. This really turned me off for future rentals from Payless.
I would like to report a bad experience with Expedia and Payless Car Rental in Costa Rica. On expedia.com I rented a van from Payless from Nov 13-29. Expedia reservation says that "due at pickup" was $228.35. Additionally I paid for full coverage insurance through expedia.com as well and this cost was an additional $187.00.
Upon arrival to pick up the vehicle with my entire family after an 8 hour trip, under a rainstorm with 2 small children and 1 infant, they immediately said that the cost "due at pickup" was incorrect and that the real price was approximately $900, plus a $3,000 deposit. Additionally they said that the insurance I paid was something they did not honor or use whatsoever and that they had their own mandatory insurance that was required. Their insurance cost was also added to the "new" rental price. After arguing/dealing with the guy for about an hour, they finally offered to cancel the expedia reservation and create a whole new contract which I was only able to do for a shorter period of time Nov 13-20th due to cost and was left to fend for myself on the remainder of the trip.
I finally left the rental company two hours later with my family and all my belongings went from the rain downpour that afternoon. I am extremely disappointed with this reservation because I came to find out Payless did not honor expedia or its reservation & insurance cost whatsoever. Due to all the aggravation I was put through on my first day on vacation I am requesting a formal response with an apology and ask to provide some type/level of customer compensation/restitution for my troubles. You can contact me at **.
I recently went to Phoenix and rented through Expedia. My bill with all fees went from $126 to $229. Payless charged hidden fees. I contacted them and they Said the insurance was mandatory. Make sure to get a final bill before leaving with the car. I will never use this company or Expedia. Stay away. Scam artists.
Car was dated and not the car I requested. No USB port and dirty. Was misdirected by desk to stall and lost 30 minutes finding it. Was told I could not get a hard copy receipt as “the system was down”. Found another associate and got what I needed. Never again will I use this company.
I went to pick up my economy car after flying all day and I was told they had a truck for me. I said, "I didn't want a truck. I needed a small car." The counter person told me a truck was the same size as a economy car! I told him, "I needed a car," and he kept telling me the truck was the same sizes. I was tired and didn't want to keep going back and forth so I took it. Then he told me I needed toll road protection. I needed to spend 12.00 a day and they would take care of the toll road fees. I told the counter person where I was staying and where I was going. He told me I would hit toll roads every day going back and forth to my event. I declined because it didn't sound right. The 4 days I spent in Austin I didn't hit one toll road! I felt the man was just trying to sell me anything! On top of all that the truck was dirty. I had to clean the inside of the windshield before I could drive. I will never rent from Payless, Budget or Avis again.
I am happy to report that Payless Car Rental promised to refund my credit card for the disputed fuel charge. I followed the instructions provided by Payless to create an online ticket on their website regarding my complaint. I received an apologetic response within 24 hours. I am happy that my complaint has been resolved but consumers should be aware that Payless Car Rental charges the customers' credit card for a full tank of gas, stating the charge will be reversed once the car is returned with a full tank of gas. Upon return, they inspect the car and if the gas tank is full they note it on the return receipt. They do not automatically reverse the charges. They will NOT accept the rental return with the fuel reading marked "FULL" as proof. The customer has to provide a receipt to prove that they refueled the rental car.
I was charged $70.67 for refueling even though I returned the rental car with a full tank of gas. Upon return, they inspect the car and if the gas tank is full they note it on the return receipt. According to the receipt Payless issued me, I used a half a gallon of gas traveling from the gas station where I refueled to the Payless rental office in Denver. According to the receipt, I was charged $70.67 for a half gallon of gas.
We had the single most frustrating, disrespectful, representative at the Atlanta airport. Ryan refused to help, refused to give his identification for us to pass up comments, refused to give a contact number to reach, refused to get a leader THEN refused to speak any more at all and just sat and played on his phone for 2 minutes until we walked away. His response when we let him know we wanted to talk to his corporate team was "do it, I'll be here. I will be here tomorrow, I will be here in a week, when you visit in 3 months I will still be here". Apparently this is true though as you cannot get any responses from leaders in the company. Highly suggest to avoid Avis Budget Group at all costs.
Don't rent from Payless. After I paid my bill in full I noticed another $400 charge to my bank account from a different Payless location? One week later, after several calls with Payless employees acting bewildered and escalation to Payless Customer Support I received a note from a different branch manager of an office I did not rent from that my account was charged in error for someone else's rental agreement. Yup, $400 even, if you believe that. The manager wrote to me that I'd receive a refund in 30 business days! Since this was done with a card we all know they can simply reverse the charges so I think they are just hoping I go away.
The bigger problem here is 1) Be prepared to be scammed as Payless doesn't have a way to protect your credit card information. 2) If you believe they care, it doesn't matter because they don't have a process to correct mistakes in a timely manner (which means they don't care). $400 mistake or worse could cause you to have a horrible vacation or miss your mortgage payment. I'd hate to think they might have charged me $2,000 out of the blue. Give your card information to Payless at your own risk.
They scammed me. The website said I was paying 423 to rent the auto. Then I get a bill for twice that amount. I called their CSR immediately and he said that he would have it straightened out before my trip and I would only be charged 423. He said someone would call me back and I am now back from my trip and no one ever called. I will be filing a complaint with the state attorney general and with Amex.
Add to that, the car was damaged -- a warning alert kept going on, there is a bar hanging down from the front end of the car, and the AC did not work. I called another CSR and she told me to return the car to the airport. Do you know how far away that is? I kept the car instead of making that journey. Lastly, when I brought the car back to the airport I told the attendant that I needed a wheel chair to the gate. He called over the manager who told me to walk to the ticket counter and ask for a wheel chair. He said it was "just over there." Well, it was VERY far away and extremely difficult for me to walk with my backpack and service dog. I suffered greatly. They should refund my full amount for the rental given all of this shoddy service.
I left my jeep there for the weekend and when I got my jeep back almost $200 were stolen from my vehicle. Then they try to say that a random person was in the lot, but have videos of the employee that went into my vehicle. They reimbursed me the amount I paid to leave my jeep there and told me they will write me a check for what was stolen. However it's been over two weeks and I haven't received anything. I will never use their service again. They have too many dishonest employees.
I rented a vehicle from Payless on a Hawaiian vacation in August. The Jeep had 20K miles. I got a flat tire while driving on the highway and was just charged $110 2 months after returning the vehicle.
I rent a car on Payless and after 70 days they send me a bill for a broken window after I requested the documents showing the broken window repair. The car they were billing me was a GMC and I rented a Ford. So I requested the receipt with my signature on that car that they said I rented. They went back and forth with excuses and still never gave me any proof. They need to be sue.
The counter guy added fuel on my rental. I did not want fuel and he put it in. He was a TOTAL JACK** and wanted to add all this extra insurance also. They quoted me a price of $121 dollars (email confirmation showing rate and taxes) and some change and it ended up being over $203 for a 2 day rental!!! I would NOT have rented from here had I known what a dilemma it would be. I have contacted customer care and am waiting to hear back. I really would like a refund for that difference. Bottom line, DON'T RENT FROM HERE.
They will sell you extended coverage that is often not needed. The counter person is trained to get you to buy extras. Call your auto insurance company did to find out if you're covered for your rental. If you're covered by your personal Auto Insurance decline all the extras. Once you have signed up for anything extra it cannot be removed at a later date.
Payless is not customer friendly. All buyers beware. This cost me a return trip to the airport or lose $300. Nothing they have is convenient. When sending me out to get the car they neglected to tell me that there was no sign for Payless. I was supposed to know that Payless was owned by Avis! My wife is in a wheelchair. I pushed her around for 30 minutes before finding this out. Absolutely thoughtless.
I reserved a midsize car only to be given a Nissan Versa. Since they were both the same cost per day, I kept it. This car had manual locks and crank windows and no back up camera. I'm surprised it had seat belts. The attendant who checked it overtalked me into pre-paying for the gas by telling me the cost on the street was between $4 and $5. When I started driving around, I discovered that it was only $3.29-$3.59 and the company was going to charge me $3.89 gal. In addition, the price I was quoted online turned out to be just half of what I was charged after all the hidden charges. I regret not doing due diligence and checking reviews beforehand, but this was the first time I was ripped off by a car rental company. It won't happen a second time!
1- The car I booked online when picked up they did not had the car available in full size Sedan category. They informed me after making transaction when it was completed. 2- The other substitute car was Lower class economy sedan and they charged for the full size already did not reduce the price. 3- Warning they will not disclose until your making payment that there is $400 hold on your debit/credit card. 4- My own insurance covered the rental insurance car. Still The agent at Payless will make you call your insurance and will forcefully insist to speak to them directly to check if you have coverage. Even though I provided my personal insurance card information physically. 5- They are shady and lack customer experience will try their best to upsell you addons. Worst car rental period.
I can't believe this is happening in America, thousands of people are being ripped off by this greedy, dishonest car rental company and no one is doing anything to stop them. They are getting rich by literally stealing money from innocent people. I was initially overcharged by Payless about $60, still waiting for final amount. PLEASE do something to stop them from stealing money. They should be investigated for their dishonest practices and dealt with accordingly.
Went through a $2.88 toll in one state, paid directly online within the 4 day period and Payless charged over $20 for that toll as well as a toll in a state over 600 miles away. The pickup and return were at the same location. I sent etollcustomercare(at)htallc.com the Payless receipt showing I drove less than 700 miles. There are no car ferries between the 2 states. It was physically impossible to be in both states in one trip. This could be eliminated by software.
I used Travelocity to rent a car in Dublin Ireland at Payless/Budget to get to Shannon Airport as my airline changed locations because of the Boeing MAX 8 Grounding. I was told it would be $72.85 US dollars for the 12 hour rental. When I arrived at the airport after flying all night they told me it was 72 Euros and charged me 28 euros for not taking their optional insurance. The $72.85 turned into $113.94 and I was stuck because I had a meeting at 3pm and it was already 9am, so I took the car. I contacted Travelocity and they said I had to take it up with Payless/Budget. I will never use Travelocity nor Payless/Budget again. There is no respect for customers by this company and be forewarned before using them.
The Payless we dealt with is part of Firkins car dealership, Bradenton FL. They use them when repairing our vehicle. The rental they gave us died 3 times in middle of the road. We managed to get it home and when we called the mgr to tell him, he told my wife to try to drive it back to dealership!! Or call roadside assistance (another 15 mins on phone) and an hour and a half to pick it up. We requested they bring us a car and he stated, "Nope, can't do it." Mind you they are only 10mins away. So finally after complaining to dealership they came and swapped out the vehicle. What kind of rental business tells a customer who is having trouble with a vehicle running, to drive it anyway - Payless that's who.
Payless/Budget car rental from Hartford Bradley Airport was the worst rental experience in my entire life. I waited 20 minutes for the first car they gave me. It was a large jeep, not at all what I reserved which was an economy car and then as I pull out I noticed it had no gas. I drove back in and the attendant told me I probably didn't read the gas gauge correctly. He tried to start the car and it wouldn't start. I waited 25 minutes for the the second car. I noticed that it had a license plate that was not the same license plate as stated on the paper document. They then gave me a third car. All of this took OVER an hour. I was then stuck in traffic and was anxious the entire trip to Boston. I barely made it to my international flight. Now to add insult to a horrible experience I have been charged for car tolls when i specifically told them that I was using my own EZ pass and made sure the transponder was closed on the car.
I rented a brand new Nissan Rogue from Payless in Reno, Nevada on July 17/18 2019. The bottom line charge was $198. I was worried about hidden charges based in bad reviews I read on the Internet. When I returned the vehicle on July 20 in ref's evening, everything seemed okay. The attendant assured that everything in order for tags $198 charge. Lo and behold my Visa statement showed a charge of $343. I was cheated out of $145. Payless is a scam organization and needs to be shut down. John
I rented an intermediate level car, but was given a Nissan Versa (lower class) without power windows or locks - broken key, seats had stains and car was grimy. When I asked if this was the correct class, I was told it was, but offered an upgrade for an additional 15.00 a day to get a different Versa with power windows and locks. I was lied to about the class. I didn’t know any better and was pressured to sign documents to complete rental. I was foolish and left with this car as I was pressed for time due to family health emergency. Upon arriving at the hospital and looking at the interior (in better lighting) - I noticed the stains and filth, along with the key that didn't work in the passenger side lock. No way to open that door. :( Trying to resolve this through CarRentals.com has been a nightmare. Steer clear of Payless and CarRentals.com since neither company accepts responsibility or values customer satisfaction.
Never got the car reserved for us nor a call back apologizing. Came to Atlanta under bad family matters and couldn’t be there to support for a funeral. Customer service reps at the counter was not nice nor accommodating. Piss poor attitudes. Would reserve or recommend them to anyone.
The most terrible car rental experience. Will never rent from this company. People beware it's a total rip off. Had to wait in the line over 30 min, but I was extremely patient. But I never received the car I reserved. I drove from NY to DC and later I was charged 68 dollars for TOLLS, which is way too much. Because initially when I asked they told me the car has an EZ pass. But for an EZ pass it should only cost half that amount. You can get cheaper rentals with much better service.
I rented a vehicle through Payless to pick up at Newark airport for two days. Returned the vehicle after extending the time by one hour. Received a receipt for total payment of vehicle. Next day I have a 424.00 charge taken by Payless. I call customer service. All I was told was that a request of escalation of review would be done and I would get an answer. That was last week. All I received was a breakdown of charges. Again with no explanation and no one to speak to. 4 times spoke with customer service as well as emailing customer service over a week now and charge is still on my CC and no answer.
I also entered a dispute for the charge with my bank. So far no resolution in removing this charge. Now looking to find their corporate office for resolution. Very frustrated with this company that supposedly has customer service people from another country who know nothing about resolving billing matters and just give you boilerplate answers. I wouldn’t even give this company a one rating. Horrible, but I’m not giving up my money to these thieves. Would never recommend them to anyone. I rent vehicles several times a year through other rental places and have never had a problem like this. Would never use them again.
Priceline quoted me a total of $241.38 including tax. Payless at the Philadelphia airport charged me $327.66, $86.28 more than the quote. Payless PHL told me they did NOT order Priceline. I'm not happy at all with this process. When I called both, each said the other was responsible. I used Priceline before but this has turned me off of them forever.
I reserved a car for the quoted rate of $282. I was SHOCKED to see $1,462 on my credit card. They refuse to discuss on the phone and they basically said “too bad” with no explanation for the difference in their email response. Contact me if you are interested in hearing more about this experience. It’s absolute fraud. I noticed other articles and BBB reviews citing similar experiences. I wish I had read the articles before. Someone needs to stop them!
This company is **. They overcharged me like crazy, a whopping $511.33 for 1 day's worth of rental which should be $65.91. Then they said they’d credit me around $300+. Sent me a receipt which shows a charge of $49.95 for FUEL even though I returned the vehicle w/ a FULL tank. So now twice, they attempt to overcharge me. Their customer service is a joke. Filed a complaint with BBB and Attorney General of Florida. Still waiting to hear from Paycrap.
Rental car broke down in the middle of nowhere. Payless told me to call roadside assistance. Roadside assistance said that I had to pay for the tow because I declined roadside assistance. Maybe I did, maybe I didn’t. Besides the point. The car malfunction was due to their lack of maintenance. My son and I sat on the side of the highway for 5 hours before I finally called CHP. The highway patrol gave us a ride to the nearest town. LMAO! Way to go Payless. Congratulations Payless for winning the worse customer service award. And another congratulations for leaving your customers stranded on a busy highway!
I booked a rental car in Florida from Payless, for an agreed price. Before l left home l called several times asking them to verify the pricing, and both times they assured me the price was correct, and there would be no additional charges. Thus assured, l picked up the car, trusting them at their word, which they lied to my face about at the checkout counter again, sneaking in charges for roadside assistance, transponder charges which were not even needed in Tampa, etc. When l got home and saw how dishonest they had been, l called them to complain. They refused to do anything about it, saying l signed the agreement at the counter when l picked up the car, so too bad! By the way, the Better Business Bureau has issued a national consumer alert about Payless. Should be renamed "Paymore". Lesson learned... Next time I'll read the contract before signing and walk away if that happens again.
We couldn't care less that our car was covered with dings and dents - it was the threatening, aggressive upsell pitch from the man at the check-in. We nearly walked away. I would have rather used Uber or Lyft. I won't use Payless again. I was glad I had my rental agreement printed out because what he wanted us to sign was for double the quote.
Worst car rental experience in my life. Not located at the airport, extra-long shuttle wait, extremely long wait to get car (only one employee at counter), reserved car not available (downgraded to a mid-size SUV for the same price), off-site hours 7-11 had to have someone take me to the airport for my 8:20 AM return flight, charged additional $$ for car, customer service # goes to India and they can't tell you why there were extra charges (which ended up being a late fee because the location did not check my car in that I had to drop-off before business hours until the next day). Finally got the refund for the extra charges but that took five days. Never, ever again.
Wish I had checked the reviews for Payless car rental in Houston, TX. When picking it up they said it was inspected with no issues. They said if any dents larger than a quarter or scratched larger than a dollar bill occur I will need to pay for damages. Before I even got close to the car I could see a dent. Then I found another one. I documented that on the paperwork and had a worker acknowledge it. The worker was rude. Then the second night I was pulled over for no taillights.
I called the emergency number and there wasn't much they could do so I waited until morning for a new car to be delivered but then they said they did not have time to deliver a new vehicle but I could drive there to pick it up. This was about an hour away. I would have to cancel my plans and waste money for reservations I had so I just drove the car during the day. For the next 3 days we had to do all our plans quickly so we could get back to the hotel before dark. This was so inconvenient. I emailed the manager twice (Ed **) and never received a response back. Would of been nice to know all this before using Payless. This was my first and last time using them.
I rented a compact from their website however at counter I was told the only thing available was a VW Beetle which he argued was similar to a four door compact. My only option was a Camry upgrade which started at an extra $12 a day then he dropped to $9 and when I continued to question he dropped to $9. I had no choice but to sign for the Camry which ended up well over $200 more. When I went to the parking garage I could see a number of compact cars but not one Beetle. The young lady working there confirmed that they did not have any Beetles there and she cancelled the Camry and gave me a compact for the original price I had booked. The guy at the desk lied to my face and scammed me... To me this is Fraud.
I do not have the time to sit here and write my complaint. This is by far the worse company ever. They operate one hell of a scam!!! I rented the car at the price I was quoted. Once I returned the car, I fly home after my vacation. Little did they know that I was going to be that ONE customer who would check his credit card. When I did, they had charged me $102 more than expected. After spending some time, I finally opened a ticket. Going back and forth with over 20 messages between us, they finally said that if I provide receipts for the gas, they would refund me.
You see, they started that they had to put 8 gallons of fuel in the vehicle. After I swore a little bit, and got angry I showed proof of fuel. Now they credited me the $102, and closed the ticket. Not a Sorry Sir, apologize, or our mistake sir. Just credited the money. My time is worth so much more, and I or my business will NEVER DO BUSINESS with them again. They are a Scam, and they hope that none sees their credit card, so that you do not notice. They are unprofessional, rude, disrespectful, and lawless. Glad I did business with them, cause now I know where not to go.
From start to finish, my experience with this company was horrendous. I had originally booked a full size car with Payless through Expedia. The total cost that was due via Expedia was $87. I opted to purchase $40 collision insurance through Expedia as well as rentals are not covered under my personal policy with Progressive. When I arrived at the rental pick up, I was pressured by the customer service agent multiple times to purchase additional insurance, upgrade the car, purchase prepaid gas, etc. The prepaid gas option was especially confusing as they charged $2 a gallon when the cost of gas off site was $1.81 at the time. The customer service agent laughed at me when I declined and assured me that their option was cheaper. I again declined. I signed the necessary paperwork and was handed the key.
The customer service agent told me to go out into the lot and hit the panic button and I would find it. I found the car easily enough (a mini van) and was on my way. I will say that the car was clean and ran well. I returned the car early on Monday with a full tank of gas as I was instructed. Later that day I noticed that my account had been charged much more than I had anticipated. $143.88 was withdrawn as opposed to the $87 I had expected. I tried to call Payless customer service/billing to no avail. You are not able to speak to someone about your questions or concerns.
The only avenue to have an issue addressed is to open a “ticket” on their website that someone may or may not respond to. I expressed my issues and awaited a reply. The reply stated that since I had already paid and the reservation was closed, they could offer me no refund. I stated this was unacceptable I explained that if any additional costs had been added, it had been against my will and without my permission. They responded by sending me a receipt of services that I had initiated. Indeed on the receipt, the customer service agent had added additional liability insurance of $16.25 per day that I had absolutely not accepted.
My mistake was trusting this agent and company to not charge me for something I had verbally denied. I will never use this company again and would not recommend it to anyone else. The customer service was callous and unhelpful. The staff was rude and condescending. I would assume that it would be more beneficial to go with a larger rental car company such as Enterprise or Hertz even if the rentals are at a slightly higher cost. They at least seem to run their business with an ounce of honesty and dignity.
We arrived at rental desk after long travel and late at night. The clerk explained only some of the additional expenses incurred. My fault for not reading although I was very tired from travel. What should have been a $182 charge ended up $369 due to several "additional fees". However, I did write a letter explaining that their business practice was deceitful in not fully explaining all charges, but they have yet to give me the courtesy of a replay after 4 months. I will never rent a car again from Payless Car Rental.
This was the WORST rental car experience in my life. I called the 1-800 to extend my car rental. The customer service agent said that he wasn't able to assist me and I would have to contact Payless directly in ATL. I called ATL and was routed back to the main reservation number. I explained to the next agent that I called ATL several times and I keep getting routed back to the main number.
I asked if he could help me and he said he was unable. He suggested that I return to the airport in Atlanta to see if they could extend the reservation. I was 2 hours away from the Atlanta airport and I am being told to return to one of the world's busiest airport to see if they can extend the rental. That was beyond ridiculous and absurd. I tried calling Atlanta again and was routed back to the main number. This representative told me to press 5. I call Atlanta again and press 5. After pressing 5, I am routed back to the main number again. I asked for a supervisor and the representative never transferred me to one. He said that there wasn't anything he could do to help me.
The next morning, I called again. The representative said he would email my request. I was given a ticket number. He said I would receive an email within the next hour with an answer to my request. I NEVER received an email. I called back again and gave a different representative my ticket number. He said that he couldn't help because they were still waiting on a response. This was truly one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever endured. Payless rental car is a company the exemplifies horrible customer service. I would never rent from this company. DO NOT RENTAL FROM PAYLESS CAR.
Worst rental experience in 30 years of renting cars. No confirmation email. Closed locations still on listed on the web. Incompetent phone service. Incompetent desk service. Car not ready. Asking the same question over and over. Incorrect info about shuttle. Inconsistent incorrect info about payment refund policy plus.
This company has the worst customer service. I booked a car with this company as a local renter. Please be advised that there are restrictions on local residents. The rep at the counter would not apply any reasonableness to the situation at hand. Due to being a local renter they require documents that support you being a local resident. One of the documents can be a current utility bill. Since my utility bill was not current I asked could I suppose a receipt of payment in full due to the fact that statements are only generated every 30 days. The answer was no. I then asked, "Is there any other document that you would accept?' The answer was no.
After leaving the airport via Uber that cost $20. I called the corporate office and was informed that a bank statement pay stub or a current utility bill would suffice for supporting documents for a local residents are then return back to the airport to see why was I given misinformation. The response was, "Well we prefer utility statements." The website does not say prefer. The website says that supporting documents would be current utility bill pay stub or bank statement. After it has been acknowledged that a mistake has been made... now there are no cars available. I then wait for over 2 hours. Again I am inconvenience due to the poor customer service and poorly ran establishment. I speak with a supervisor and she doesn't offers or willing to make any concessions. I would I strongly advise any consumer not to deal with Payless Rental. They are very unprofessional and unethical.
My family had to travel to Pittsburgh for a funeral so I reserved a car from Payless and requested a toddler seat for my son. When we arrived at the post office no one was available in the airport so we had to go outside to the parking garage and see an attendant. The attendant handed me the keys and made me retrieve the car at the other end of the parking garage and drive it to the booth to check out. When we arrived at the booth he did not have the booster seat that we requested. We had to rent a car from a different company and had to spend double. Thanks for nothing Payless.
Do not rent from this disgusting company! If you don’t take their upgrades then they (Nathan) becomes rude! He argued that we didn’t have proper insure, which we did. When I highlighted the coverage on our papers he blamed us & refused to apologize. He then intentionally typed in our credit card number incorrectly & told us that our credit card had been rejected. I went outside & bought a drink with the same card, then called my bank to find out what he had done. I’m certain it was intentional. Each time he blamed us for everything that went wrong. Total jerks!! Now I discovered that we were overcharged so I have another fight in my hands.
We rented a SUV Mitsubishi Outlander from Payless Rental Cars in Puerto Rico because they were the only company with vehicle availability through the Southwest app or otherwise. We were hesitant to rent because of all the negative reviews. However, we proceeded carefully knowing it could have been problematic. We arrived via plane to the airport and waited over an hour to get a shuttle to the Payless rental car station, which was located outside of the airport.
We called several times and they would just reiterate that someone was on the way each time. When we reached the counter, they tried giving full size SUV away to someone who had booked a standard vehicle and was attempting to upgrade it. I objected to that since he did not have a reservation and I already did. Suspiciously, Payless also preferred that I just use the credit card for my insurance, rather than my insurance company. At the time, I thought nothing of it, but it stood out as unusual. Anyway, the customer service was terrible. The tried to avoid inspecting the vehicle prior to my signing for it. They glanced over major damage and we had to insist that he document the pre-existing damage the was present.
After documenting it with a “S” for scratch, we took the vehicle. We drove it without any issues. When we went to return the car, they immediately tried claiming that there was no pre-existing damage. We showed them the documentation, and they responded that the pre-existing damage was not that bad. A different person, inspected it during the day and wrote a slightly different code. The code was “MB” for missing/broken. The state of the vehicle was unchanged evident by pictures of the vehicle that we had taken before and after. They took over an hour to “handle” the situation and delayed our transit to the airport. They charged my credit card for the deductible without my consent. When I found out what they were trying to do, I tried to freeze my credit card, but was unable to do it before they charged me again.
When I looked at my charges, I noticed that Payless had actually charged the full amount for the rental up front and not when I returned the vehicle. I asked to speak to a supervisor to show the pictures and state my case but they refused to listen. I called Southwest to report the situation and they sent me a form for me to complete and reported that it would take months for them to verify the details and that I would not be reimbursed. This is a fraudulent business. I imagine that they are not permitted to do business on airport grounds because they are not legitimate. I will never rent from them again. I suggest that you beware and avoid them altogether, if at all possible.
I rented a car and went to pick it up at 8 pm at night, so it was dark out. No one from, the company came out to inspect the car with me and I didn't think about trying to take pics at night. The next morning when I got in the car to drive, I noticed numerous dings, scratches, and paint chips all over the car, but by this point the car had been in my possession all night (in my driveway).
I drove the car to my destination, backed it into a parking spot at the hotel, and there it sat until I drove it home. They filed a claim saying I dented the trunk lid. How does that happen when a car is backed into a parking spot and left there? Mind you, there was a curb behind me, not another vehicle. I take the car back, turn it in, and again no one comes out to check the vehicle, even when I asked them to. Turned it in at 6pm and they didn't check it for damage until the following morning at almost 9am. It sat in the car rental parking lot the entire night, where who knows what could have happened, and now I'm having to deal with a bogus claim. I will not be renting from them again, and if you do...TAKE PICS, even if it's nighttime, cause now it's my word against theirs.
In October of 2018 I reserved a car with Payless through Southwest Airlines that clearly stated on the reservation Unlimited Mileage at no-charge. When I arrived at the Payless counter in San Diego during a casual conversation the Payless employee questioned my destination which I freely told him was Yuma, AZ and was headed there as my son who is a US Marine is stationed there was having back surgery on the following Tuesday. I was then told by the Payless employee that there was going to be a Zone 3 $150.00 mileage charge as I was not staying in the San Diego area. I was told if I did not agree to the charge and sign the rental agreement I could go elsewhere to get a rental car. As my son was having back surgery in Yuma, Az the following Tuesday he left me no choice but to agree to the charges or risk no car rental and not being with my son during his surgery.
As my original reservation agreement clearly stated unlimited mileage and a total figure of $226.97 this is the amount I expected to pay. I was given a take it or leave it and go elsewhere option by the employee and I choose to take it and deal with it at a later date rather than risk missing my son's surgery. I do not agree with the charge even though I did sign the rental agreement as I was given an ultimatum by the Payless employee even though I presented him with a copy of the original rental reservation information from Southwest Airlines. This will be the last time I rent a car from Payless and would suggest others be wary of the Unlimited Mileage claim that is given by this organization.
The car broke down. They took hours to get me a tow because they reported my location wrong. They reported the location of the car wrong again and then accused me of stealing it. Now they're charging me for the car even though it was a mechanical issue and I didn't buy their insurance so I might have to actually pay it and not even get a car out of the deal. Plus they keep upping the amount they say I owe. This is a terrible company and it's linked with Avis and Budget so they're probably crap too. I legitimately hope the business fails and falls apart.
What a total shame this place is. They advertise at 20/30 dollars a day. Had a crap compact for two days and 1 hour and cost me $260 after all their bs fees which when questioned about they couldn’t/wouldn’t explain. Zero Stars. ** Payless and change your name.
Payless Car Rental (Payless) deserves an 'F' grade as far as I'm concerned. Let me be clear: I am not someone who takes the time to write reviews very often; however, Payless' conduct has been so egregious that I had to work the crafting of this review into my busy schedule. Also, this is NOT defamation; I have time-date stamped photos, message-board conversation, and three witnesses; all of which can verify the details of this submission. Finally, Payless was pre-warned of this review's pending publication and was given an opportunity to defend its behaviour (an opportunity that has yet to be utilized).
The review: I rented a car from Payless in Las Vegas for six days this past September. The company's agent refused to complete a condition report at the outset -- so I took my own photos instead. Then the agent implied that the vehicle was fine when I returned it on September 13. Forty-six days later(!) Payless wrote a letter addressed to me which contained an accusation that I had caused damage to one of the vehicle's tail lamps during the rental period (said damage is clearly visible in my photos which were taken minutes before I ever put the vehicle in "drive").
Payless then charged my Visa credit card $437.38 USD without my permission (presumably they were able to do this because of some unread contract clause-- not unlike if a hotel were to later charge someone for damage inflicted to one of its rooms or property-- although Visa reversed the charge when I disputed it as being unauthorized later).
As a result of a local postal strike I did not receive Payless' letter until November 8, which is the same day Payless received a heated reaction from me. Following the conversation a member of their staff created an online service ticket designed to handle the dispute; then from November 9 to November 28 I spent precious life-hours going back and forth with The Payless Customer Service Lead (The Lead).
The Lead's first message to me stated: "...it has been determined that this incident was the driver’s responsibility..." and "...Because this is a renter responsibility situation, the charges have been deemed to be valid and a refund is not warranted..." It was DETERMINED? HOW?! When pressed to reveal the proof that I had inflicted the damage, The Lead dodged the demand and asked me to defend myself by submitting the non-existent condition report. When pressed again she stated that "We have forwarded your information to the location for further review." When given a deadline and threatened with negative reviews she continued to offer no proof but did offer to refund 50% of my $437.38 USD.
Finally, when given a deadline and threatened with possible legal action she finally conceded that there is "no documentation on their side." Payless promptly refunded my money and stated: "We apologize for any difficulties you may have experienced during your rental. We hope you continue to choose Payless Car Rental as your rental car company of choice." "NO DOCUMENTATION ON THEIR SIDE" ever existed... And yet I was subjected to a lengthy and stressful process. Payless Car Rental: F.
I rented from this company because they had a lower rate online. After I returned the vehicle, they charged me for a full tank of gas $44 and an additional $88. YOU ARE CROOKS!!! I will review you anywhere I can online to warn others of your practice. CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS. ASKED FOR AN ITEMIZED RECEIPT BEFOREHAND.
This company is pulling a classic scam. They are offering by far the lowest rate on Expedia. When you get there you cannot get the booked rate. They insist you have your proof of insurance. No other car rental company demands this. You just sign a waiver. If you do happen to have it they ask for other documents like outbound flight proof. If you can't supply they offer you a walk-in rate. Of course you have already waited 30 minutes for their bus and are marooned in their lot. Having tipped the bus driver he stopped by the gate where I was waiting for an UBER. "He asked what scam they had attempted on me"!!!! Everyone is a MUG if they don't walk away. DO NOT BE LULLED BY THEIR LOW PRICES.
I rented a mid-size SUV through Expedia for my weekend trip in Colorado from Payless. I had one cost agreed to when I made the reservation and at the counter it became over double the cost. They said part of it was because I was "checking in early". My reservation was for 4 pm and I was at the counter at 3:40 pm. When I returned the car I got a bill for $63.27 additional with them saying I didn't return the car until the next day. Wrong again. I had to provide a copy of my flight itinerary to get them to credit my card.
Two weeks later they bill my credit card again only this time for "Toll charges" and I never once traveled on a toll road. The toll was charged in November-when I wasn't even in Colorado. There is no way to reach them by phone and resolve the issue-they force you to fill out an online complaint form. This makes two fraudulent charges on my Visa.
We rented a car in San Diego in late October. The experience was not what we were expecting. They lie and try to trick you into paying more for upgrades. The car was disgusting and I felt like I needed another shower after driving it. I will NEVER rent from them again.
We booked online and ended up being nickel and dimed to death with fees so paid twice what we expected for a crappy little Nissan. Notice that your confirmation does not have an am or pm so they tried to charge me a late fee for not turning my car in at 3:30 am. I know I selected pm online. They also try to talk you into paying $10-25 more per day for an all wheel vehicle because there might be snow. Like a front wheel drive won't work in snow. I wish I could post you my bill so you can see how shady this company truly is. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM HERE. I wish I would've checked more online reviews as there are articles warning against it. HEED the WARNINGS! RENT elsewhere! You can tell the counter representatives see every person walking in as a SUCKER! Denver Airport Location.
Rented a Payless car thru Kayak website for a few days in Orlando Airport area. Returned it today 10 Nov 2018. Gal with dark hair tried to aggressively double my cost when I rented it. I told her I didn't need any insurance cost and she quickly said it's required several times. She also increased tax double what my rate on website was. I won't rent from them again...very aggressive and not at all ethical.
I was told it would be $160 for a weekend. I was charged $346. I couldn't find the fine print where the would justify the hidden fees. It appears that the fees only appear on the final receipt. I'm pretty sure they just lied and stole my money.
Payless has an F rating from the BBB for deceptive business practices. That's all you need to know. I wish I had, they offered me a "free" upgrade, but ended up charging me an extra $113 for insurance. I declined. Should be to easy to fix right? Nope, they fought me tooth and nail for three months, refunded half, then took it all back when my credit card company got involved. I've since found out this is a common practice, the desk agent will tell you to sign to decline, but you are actually accepting the insurance. I will never use these guys again. You shouldn't either.
I rented a vehicle from Payless at the San Francisco Airport. I got a flat tire in Yosemite National Park. I called Customer service, and they said to drive to Fresno, Ca. on the donut spare tire. I was advised by a mechanic that the tire was not safe to drive the 150 miles to Fresno. I called customer service back, and explained the situation, and was told to purchase a new tire, and I would be reimbursed upon returning the vehicle. Upon returning the vehicle, I was told there would be no refund.
After a discussion with the manager Mr. Robert ** I was given a partial reimbursement. I forwarded all the information to the corporate headquarters, and was told that there would be no further reimbursement. I find Payless management in San Francisco, and the corporate office derelict in honoring the customer service instructions, and forgoing the safety of a customer and family for the sake of the bottom line. I would advise to rent a vehicle from another car rental company when the need arises.
We rented online through Expedia. Got there first of all, did not get the vehicle as described, was suppose to be a small SUV, was given a small car. Was asked on site if we needed a GPS in vehicle, which we did because of some traveling around to outside areas, and marked it as such. No GPS was in car, and they would not give up one without a HUGE upgrade charge. Then when quoting us the total amount, was way above (doubled) what the amount was suppose to be, I asked why, and was told it was for INS, which I then explained we had full coverage on our vehicles and it also covered any rental and we would NOT need that, to please remove it. She seem to do so, or said she did.
Upon closing, my husband stepped up to sign, since card was in his name. He did not read the contract, but trusted her since she had just confirmed by mouth the correct amount. Upon return of the car, we realized she billed us for "Loss Damage Waiver" amount of $188.16. Before paying we tried to explain that to the lady at the counter. She was NOT going to correct it. It was a contract and we had signed it, therefore, owed it!! So whatever you do "READ" every word on your contract before you sign it!!! I will never use Payless Car Rental again!
I had a bad experience. Do not rent from Payless Car Rental! Their contracts are one-sided protecting only them but not the customer. You cannot get customer service on the phone and you will wait hours. I didn't rent a car at the end and they took my money and didn't give it back! They lie over the phone. They say they one thing but do another. I am suing them in court now. This is my cancelation number ** by them. You're all welcome to call me and I'll tell you why not to trust them!
They charged me $123 a month after I had rented the car with them for a "tire repair" that did NOT happen while I had the car. When I returned the car, everything was in top shape and the inspection was flawless. When I called their customer service to solve this matter, they always gave excuses that they couldn't find my records or confirmation number. Then they started saying that their system was down. Then they told me to resolve the matter with RentalCars.com whom I used to make the reservations through. They couldn't solve the problem since they weren't the ones charging me. Overall, This company is a scam! DO NOT GO WITH THEM, YOU PAY MORE WITH PAYLESS. If I could give them 0 stars, I would.
I rented Nissan Altima at a Payless Car Rental location very near Chicago Ohare Intl airport on 3/26/18 and returned it intact 3/30/18, after making reservation for 4 days online with full payment of $177.96 including Concession Recovery Fee, Customer Facility Charge, Vehicle License Fee and Sales Tax on 3/18. However I found Payless charged extra $28.26 and then $124.44 to my credit card without any notice in advance and even afterwards.
Not wanting to waste time arguing with them I determined to consider the $28.26 as e-Toll fees, but I sent Payless my letters a couple of times requesting for their explanation of why and under what pretext they unilaterally charged the extra $124.44 to my credit card afterwards, though I had paid their billed total amount in advance. But they'd never replied to my letters, whiling sending payment demanding notices only a couple of times.
Then they simply sent my case to a collection agency. Last week I tried to rent a car at Budge Car Rental, but was refused because there is an unpaid debt on my credit record. I think this is the very Payless's untrue, baseless and false extra charge issue. I need help to get this false debt cleared by Payless in this most civilized and advanced country in the world.
We were unable to rent a vehicle from PAYLESS as the computer would not let the agent set up an account for us. First, she blamed the credit card company. We called them and they told her that "we could buy the car if we wanted to." Then she said that we had an open ticket with BUDGET Car Rental, which we had canceled, and this was not letting her set up an account for us. On our next credit card statement, PAYLESS charged us for a vehicle we DID NOT RENT and reported that we had driven 1400 miles. We have tried to settle this with them but no one ever returns our calls, letters or emails. Before doing any business with them, go online and read the reviews. Once you've done so, you will learn that this company (who is affiliated with BUDGET and AVIS) is as bad as the Ebola virus. Like Ebola, avoid PAYLESS.
I rented a vehicle from Budget originally down in Orlando Florida, but when I went to pick up my vehicle they transferred me to Payless because they could “offer a lower rate”. Like any customer, I was excited to pay even less. However, I fully regret ever letting them hand me over. The customer support I received was horrible. I needed to extend my rental by 10 hours. Just 10 hours. They wanted to charge me over $50 for my basic car rental!
I then informed them I just searched I could return this car and rent another from a different company for $30, why are you charging me so much? The call center representative couldn’t answer that. So I asked to speak to a supervisor. He wasn’t available. Really? I’ve worked in a call center help desk setting before, there are ALWAYS supervisors on duty. Multiple. I requested the supervisor call me back when they returned. The representative claimed it would take 15 minutes.
An hour later I call back because I still had not heard back. Supervisor is in a meeting. So where are the others? Again can’t answer my question. Representative hangs up on me because he claims there’s nothing he can do for me. Put me on the phone with a supervisor! This place is a scam! I’ve never dealt with such horrible terrible customer service. I will never rent from this company again and will make sure I tell everyone I know who travels to avoid them at all costs!!!!
I picked up a minivan in Denver and booked it to Las Vegas. Once there I could not find another rental, any company. I drove this rental to Orlando. My final destination. Called and informed Payless before I left Nevada, no quote. $3,000.00! Also a day later than planned since the Payless was inside a TGIF Fridays, no signs. Kirkman Dr Orlando. No damage, full of gas.
Ana at the call center extremely rude and no help whatsoever. Giggling the phone call. Her supervisor, Josh ** (so they told me), I assume refused to answer my transferred call after 20 or so odd minutes. I will never be renting from this company again. Worst car rental experience thus far. I still have no real information and no receipts. I will also be letting my colleagues know about their poor business.
We returned our car in perfect condition. Nothing was mentioned about damage at the time (because there was none). Over 2 months later I noticed a $184.00 charge on my credit car from Payless. I called and they said they would get back to me in 72 hours. I called again after a week of no notification and was told it was for windshield repair. There was nothing wrong with the windshield when we returned it. And we were never notified that there was supposedly damage and that they were charging us for it. They just billed our credit card... probably hoping we wouldn't notice. Phone calls just want you to go through the same loop again and I could not get a manager to speak with. Very shady! Never rent from Payless!
Never ever use Payless Car Rental! Completely fraudulent company. Bait and switch, fast talking agent overcharged and added charges that we didn’t know about. Had agreement for 262.00 for Ford Explorer. Paid almost 500.00 for dirty minivan. Was told they didn’t have our car (we saw it in the lot). Beware and read all reviews about Payless. None of them good! This company needs to be investigated!!! Total fraud. No way to reach anyone to fix complaints. Customer service told us to wait for our open ticket to be looked into. Ended up reopening ticket still to no avail. Customer service said to just wait. Had no other information for us. Have waited much too long!
Payless Car Rental is the absolute worst car rental facility EVER!!! Rented a filthy dirty car that was on the verge of breaking down the whole trip, the rudest customer service I’ve ever experienced, and waited on a bus for 20 min. while our driver took a smoke break! Unfreakinbelievable. Please pass this along and get them out of business!!!
I reserved a car through Expedia (reserve now pay later) something I've done a many times, when I arrived to the Payless Car Rental to pick up my car I was told my reservation had been cancelled because after midnight the system resets, but it wasn't midnight yet... and I rented the car for midnight because my flight was scheduled to arrive in Phoenix at 11:45pm... I landed early and I arrived early to Payless around 11:45p. The lady at the desk said that she would match the price I agreed to on Expedia.
After two attempts to get me to sign a car rental agreement (thank God I read them because they were higher than Expedia) she found a lower rate than Expedia! I thought that was weird but I accepted the blessing and went to pick up the car... immediately I noticed a few damages to the trunk and the gas hand was not full. I documented it with the agent that appeared offended and after several min of conversation about the gas hand, I sign a form documenting the problems, he releases the car... when I returned the car in the exact same condition including the gas hand the agent asked do I want a receipt or can they email it... I told him to email it... I asked, "Was everything ok?" He said, Yes you're all good..."
I leave to take my returning flight to Chicago once, I land and get a min to settle down (the next morning). I check for the charges and can you believe it I have been charged double from my signed agreement! And $100 more than the charges for Payless on Expedia. When I called to ask, "Why? Whats going on?" I was told it would take a few days to get the invoice because my initial agreement with Expedia was cancelled! When I stated, "How can you see a cancelled agreement (your company cancelled) and not my signed agreement?" He was became rude even threatened to not send the request for the invoice through.
When I asked for a manager I was told the manager was busy and would tell me the same thing as he... when I told this extremely rude person to let me speak to the manager anyway the rude person put me on hold returned after a short time and said, "The manager is busy. Goodbye," and hung up! I looked up Payless corporate number and was re-routed back to the Phoenix airport location...
Please please beware of Payless Car Rental company in Phoenix airport, read reviews and take them seriously. I usually do and I didn't this time... I have disputed the charges with my bank and will post this review on all the third party sites, Yelp, Expedia, Hotwire, Priceline, Bookit.com, etc. I'm also going to report them to BBB after reading all the reviews and submit a report to the eyewitness news team that look into scams...
Rented a car from Payless at their Midway Airport (Chicago) offsite location. Returned car the next day only to find that they had closed their location and moved it permanently without telling me creating a tremendous return hassle. Then they sent me a bill with an additional unauthorized charge. Very poorly run company and not worth the few dollars you save on their rate. I believe they are incompetent at best and dishonest at worst. I will never rent from them again.
We booked the car rental through our travel share, it was low cost as we were on a very tight budget. It was to be around $200. This was in Las Vegas. We filled everything out, we had never rented a car before, so this was a new process. The lady was super nice, and very very friendly. She gave me the paperwork, and the bill was like $500... I freaked, and said this can't be right, this is wrong, she assured me that once the car was brought back, it would be the $200... I had cash to pay it, but they said I had to use credit card, and it would it be charged until we brought car back.
I get my credit card statement, and it was almost 700, and even after disputing it and getting angry they reimbursed me only %20. I will never ever recommend this company. No personal calls, strictly emails back and forth. AND, the car we had, my husband thought the thing was gonna fall apart while driving... Lol it was bad. Payless rips you off, felt very ripped off, and still very angry.
l rented a car on July 6. l was charged 145 and some change. l returned the car on time with a full tank of gas and no damage. On July 16 l received another fee of 165.51 so l called the local agent and they said her corporate could not do anything because it was rented from Payless Corporation. So l tried to contact the office but they can only be contacted via email. It is now July 23 and they have closed my account for the second time stating they could not see an overcharge. This company has caused my account to overdraft several times and they refuse to get me my money. They are unprofessional, they take their time to resolve anything and the account doesn’t allow you to send more than one picture. l would not recommend anyone to reserve a car online from this company. My lawyer was contacted.
I rented a car online and picked it up at the airport in Austin, Texas. When I picked up the car, I noticed that the driver's side mirror was already broken. I pointed it out to the clerk who was handling my car pick-up, and she made a note of it on my paperwork. When I returned the car, they checked the gas level and sent me on my way. Two weeks later, I received a letter to my home address, saying that they were going to charge me for the damaged mirror, even though they'd already made a note of it when I picked up the car as the damage was already there. I've tried multiple times to contact them and I keep being given the same phone number and told to call them.
I now have two claim numbers, but no way to actually submit the paperwork to them showing that the clerk marked the damage on the paperwork when I picked up the rental car. And no way to contact the people who work at the Austin airport where I would assume that paperwork showing the damage would live. The phone number just goes to a call center and not to anyone who actually works for the rental company. And the letter says they will charge me the damages fee a week after they sent out the letter, and there's no real way to file a dispute against the charge and proof that the damage was already there. Horrible customer service, and horrible company.
**Beware** You will get scammed. I had the price quote from Priceline and also bought the insurance through Priceline. Payless gave me a very old car with an aftermarket stereo that didn’t work. Payless forced for to buy their insurance and I paid almost $900 more than I had planned. The car sometimes didn’t want to start. For the rainforest the wipers were torn and old and just smeared dirt around. The return I made arrangements to have them pick up at the hotel. When I arrived home back in the states I had an email indicating the car was missing. I called the hotel and they told me the keys were still there and no had come to get it. Maybe Payless wanted to claim all the insurance money on a missing car. Horrible experience from start to finish.
I rented a car in Seattle Washington (airport). I returned the car with NO damage and in June, I get a bill from Payless stating that I had done glass damage to the car, which was not the case. They charged me $184.00 for this. I called and opened a ticket and got an email stating that they were sorry, but I was being charged due to the damage. I replied many times to the email stating that there was NO damage and requested a phone call to speak to someone regarding this matter. It has been 2 weeks and got no reply, so I called back to customer complaints again and they said the ticket was closed, that they could open it up again, which they did. I requested someone please contact me by phone so I could ask some questions about what they were saying I damaged and to tell them that there was NO glass damage.
I get an email 4 days later with a bill from Safelite Glass Corp. stating solar w/ third visor frit, whatever that means for $184.00. Which told me nothing about what the damage they are claiming I did. They closed the ticket again, so once again I replied that I would like to talk to someone and that I wasn't paying for damage I didn't do. I called my credit card company and did a dispute, so for now, awaiting results on that. My biggest complaint is that they charged me for something I didn't do, and that I can get no one to contact me by phone, I have even tried calling the Seattle airport direct and can get no answer there either. When I had this rental car, the windshield wiper blades were so bad that I had to replace them, so that I could see to drive. They did reimburse me for the blades.
San Diego Airport Rental is terrible - I rented a car through HOTWIRE for 32 dollars a day with Payless. When I get to the desk, the sales employee tells me this car is too small for me and my 2 children. He tells me I need to upgrade and basically tells me the cost would be 550 dollars for 6 days... that's 91 dollars a day. I ask him if that is with the military discount, he then states it would be 492 dollars total. The car was a terrible car and I did not feel safe in it with my 2 children. I was charged all these additional fees and cost of this rental was more than my whole trip. I tried to call to complain but customer service just blew me off. I feel stupid for not looking into this company before I went ahead with the car rental. Worst experience I ever had with a car rental company and I will never rent from them again and I will tell the world not to either.
Never ever rent from these liars. I did not agree to their insurance and they checked that box. They are criminals. No one ever ever cares to do the right thing. If they end up doing the right thing for me I will retract this. I highly doubt it. I will never rent a car from MCO Orlando Airport again!
I reserved a car online with Orbitz for an economy car from Payless for my wife. A nine day rental. The quote was $199 with all state and local taxes included. When she arrived they told her there was a $209.81 deposit. Quite an odd number for a deposit. Stupid, but understandable - we expected a deposit. She specifically asked for no added extras and declined their insurance. Because she declined their insurance, she was charged $99 for declining their insurance. Why should we have to pay for insurance when our own insurance covers rental cars? There were a total of 10 "other charges" that totaled $260.53 add that to the $199.28 that was the actual cost of the car rental and the total was $459.81 before adding the $209.81 for the deposit. So the total at the time she rented the car was $669.62. We were told $199.28 was due at time of rental. In reality, it was more than three times that.
Payless Car Rental at the San Diego Airport - My wife complained about the deposit and she was told they wouldn't charge her the deposit. On the day of rental, our account was charged $209.81 (deposit fee) and another charge for $250. The next day the $209.81 charge was no longer pending (it had been processed) and the $250 had dropped off our account. On July 12th, 2018, 4 days after she returned the car, they again charged the $250 that had originally been charged but then dropped from our account.
My biggest issue is: $99 for declining their Collision Insurance - Seems like that should be illegal! $9 vehicle license fee, 26.55 RSA fee - wanted to decline roadside assistance but was told it's mandatory, $3.95 for using a debit card (that could have been charged as a credit card), $37.08 Airport concession fee. There are other smaller charges as well.
I don't blame Orbitz - although I will never rent a car through them again. Now, after researching Payless, I blame myself. I should have done my research ahead of time. Based on what I have found since researching Payless, they have a long history of making people pay all the additional charges. In fact, it seems that is how they make their living. Their profit doesn't come from renting cars, it comes from all the extra fees they either tell you are mandatory or they slip in hoping you don't notice. I suspect other car rental services do the same stuff. But it should be illegal to be given a quote when you rent a car that says "Amount due at time of rental: $199.28" When in reality you are going to walk out of there paying $500.
My advice is to stay away from Payless (part of AVIS) and do your research before you rent a car. The economy car she was given was in bad shape and as base of a model as you could get. No power windows or power anything. Just a car that had a sputtering engine. Please do your research so we can stop making these companies rich because they feel they can get away with it.
Rented two full size SUVs on June 23, 2018. Arrived on time to proceed with rental. Was told that my four passengers each carrying a medium size bag would not fit into a Hyundai Santa Fe, which by their definition, was the "full size" SUV that I had reserved. This claim was repeated for the second SUV with 4 passengers and similar size luggage. I had reserved each car for $500 for 7 days, or $1000 total.
Agent: "BUT, we can put you in a real full size SUV Ford or Chevy for $2000 more." Me: But that is a total of $3000 versus the $1000 I reserved!!! Agent: "Yes, but you will not fit into a Hyundai Santa Fe. We have had rush on SUV rentals in Denver and all rental car companies are sold out. So this is your only option. Do you want it or not?" The agent brought his manager over and he too said this was our only option. THIS IS A SCAM. We made a different arrangement. When we left Payless, we saw hundreds of rental cars at other rental car company lots at DIA.
I rented a car from the Baltimore airport location in May. It was a 3 day rental, the car sucked but who cares, it was cheap. $158.00 was the cost for 3 days and the $158 was charged to my credit card the day I got home. Fast forward nearly two months and they hit my credit card for 901 yesterday. NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS. The only explanation I can get is that I ran a toll (I did do that because I forgot it was there and didn’t have cash). I told the woman at the counter that I ran the toll. She told me not to worry about it that they would just bill me for whatever the toll amount wise. The toll was $10, NOT 900!!! The person I spoke with yesterday was quite rude and told me there is nothing further he can do for me. I have no idea what kind of war I am going to have to wage with them to get my money back, but I have never had this issue with Enterprise. I guess you get what you pay for.
I never write a review but if this saves anyone from the grief of what I have experienced it's worth it. First of all the economy car rental is a piece of garbage. It has no power anything, and was so archaic I had to get an upgrade. I originally needed the car for 3 days but ended up only needing it for 1 day. I brought it back and explained to them just that and that I also needed to be credited back for the gas I prepaid for. The women was extremely rude and asked me if I had a receipt for the gas I filled the car up with. I said no. I didn't know I needed to bring a receipt in. I thought you just could look at the gas gauge. She told me to calm down. I asked if I could get a receipt for the final charges and she told me it would be emailed to me. Well she never credited me back for the two additional days.
I had to call customer service who then tells you they have to open a ticket for someone else to help you. They would contact me via email. I then get an email highlighting my gas credit. Like that was solving the problem... I ended up calling my credit card and stopping all payment to them. This is the WORST car rental experience I have ever had. Customer service sucks and so do their cars. Some guy picked up his rental car and the tire was flat. They told him they would air it up for him! He said no and wanted a new car. I then witnessed them airing up the tire and putting it back in line to be rented. Unbelievable!! STAY AWAY.
I went to Arizona to visit my mother, flew on American Airlines and got a rental car, at the advice of the airlines website, from Payless. Worst mistake ever. I waited for 45 minutes because both people in front of me had issues. I should have left, but I didn't. They wouldn't let me use my debit card and then charged my actual credit card $500.00. WTF. The car didn't run very well and had a very hard time on the mountains I had to drive through. The set up of the rental car place I don't know is Payless' fault, but I find going into a parking garage and just getting in an unlocked vehicle a little sketchy. Anyways, the 45 min wait was stupid and the $500.00 charged to my credit card is the reason I will never rent from Payless again. The other places cost more because they suck less. Facts folks.
Car rental MCO Orlando Airport June 9-18 2018: I was overcharged claiming I checked the "box" for the DLW damage loss waiver. Total lie. I rent cars all the time, I never check that box! Payless is a joke. Watch your credit card statements. I will never rent from Payless again... unless they fix this. If they fix it, I will let you know! Criminals. Channel 13 Orlando has been notified!
SLC Airport Car Rental - Took 50 minutes to help one family in front of us rent a car. Then 15 minutes for them to look up my reservation and let me pay. Slow, and rude, they couldn't have worked slower if they tried and made it clear that they didn't care about the customer. Just as we finally got help, after 50 minutes of waiting at the front of the line, a blonde woman showed up to join the two lazy men who were already working and instead of hopping on her computer to help move the line, she stopped to chat with lazy guy number one at his computer, making him pause helping us to chat about their weekend. Rude AF. Will never rent from Avis or Payless again. Have only boycotted two places in my life, this makes three. Unforgettable experience, I have gotten my drivers license in a California DMV faster than the Utah Payless desk could run a card payment. Plane lands 9:10, bags collected by 9:25, car rented by 10:50! What!?! Wow. Just wow.
Listen everyone! I rented a car in Dec 2017 through Travelocity in Guadalajara, Mexico (will full insurance through Travelocity) & I had the WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! I called 2 times before to make sure my rental care was there & Payless confirmed but when I got there, the staff named LUCIO ** was mad that no one told him because he only had one car left. We even had to walk miles in the middle of the night because their office inside the airport was closed... Really? Anyways, he didn't have a copy machine to make copies of the agreement form & LIED to me saying for only $50, I would get additional car insurance so I said okay. He asked for me to sign saying the car is fine WITHOUT seeing it but luckily, my boyfriend realized what was going on & said no until we see it first. When we dropped off the rental car, he told me he charged me $450 extra so I didn't sign the receipt but they still charged it on my credit card! WHAT?
I asked to speak to his manager named JOSE ** & he wasn't there so he called him over the phone & when I explained it to the manager that I didn't agree to pay that much, he said, "Oh well." No one spoke English! Payless told me someone had to speak English & have the contract form in English! I have been calling Payless for the last 6 months (maybe 25 times already) & every single staff does not know who I can speak with. I have even been asked to email documents/proof and no one has emailed me back. I am sick & tired of being ignored. I have been manipulated! This is not fair & affecting me emotionally and mentally. So much anxiety, anger, sadness, & hate. Do not rent from them! EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU WILL SAVE MONEY COMPARED TO OTHER RENTAL COMPANIES, DO NOT DO IT! I called Travelocity and they took all of my information, recorded my testimony, but NEVER called me back! No support!
Location: Denver CO Airport. Worst rental experience ever. When we checked in the associate told us that we deserved an upgrade, of course he DID NOT mention that he would be charging us for it, just initial here, here, and sign here. Long story short, our $246 rental turned into a $466 rental. Already filed a BBB report and now I'm off to leave reviews over every possible platform. This company is the worst.
Orlando Florida MCO Airport ---I am currently on vacation but I'm so disgusted with the company I have to leave a review and aid in warning people before you use this company. I booked a rental for June 7th in advance on Expedia. I paid in advance for Collision Damage $50. Expedia let me know that $85 will be due at counter.
Upon approaching the counter, I notice there was a line for Hertz, Enterprise, etc...but no one waiting in line for PAYLESS. Smh. This should have been a warning. Once I approached the counter, the lady ask for my credit card and ID. But before the little lady explained what I was paying for, she quickly swiped my card. Once I reviewed my receipt, I let her know that the charges were not ok and she should go ahead and cancel the whole transaction which she did. Now there is a hold on my card which they say should lift by Monday June 11, 2018.
After reading these reviews I am happy that decided not to take any of their ** vehicles. I would be in a worse situation than I am now. They are still holding my money. I call to speak to a supervisor and OLIVER [a PAYLESS representative] hung up on me. Smh. They are liars and scammers. Do not waste your money here!
I reserved a car through the Payless website for a trip to Breckenridge from 4/20-4/27. When I reserved my car to Breckenridge for the week this is the email I received back showing a reserved car for a Toyota Corolla or similar (STANDARD/INTERMEDIATE CAR) Booking Reference Number: ** - Confirmation no. **. When we arrived at the airport location to pick up the car (Toyota Corolla or similar) I was informed by the agent that they did not have the car that was reserved on my reservation and that they would need to put me into another car.
I was asked by the agent where I was going and I stated that we were headed to Breckenridge for the week and he said "Oh that will be fun but it looks like you will get snow after 1 am but you should be ok with the car I am giving you." Not once did he ask me to upgrade the car he was giving us for the week. After I paid for the car, we walked out to the lot to the spot C79 and the similar car that I had reserved was not a Toyota Corolla, but a Dodge Caravan Minivan from Texas. Not liking the choice I was presented with, but knowing that we had another hour or so drive to Breckenridge, I took the minivan as the car I was given by the agent.
As we left the airport, it was raining and about 30 minutes into our drive to Breckenridge through the mountains, the rain changed to sleet and snow. We were fine up until the Eisenhower pass at the top of the mountain. As we exited the Eisenhower tunnel, there was about 2 inches of snow and ice on the backside of the mountain. At this point and over the next 6 miles down a 7% grade decline down the mountain was the most stressful, God awful, and terrifying ordeal I have been through.
Not more than 50 feet after exiting the tunnel, I slowed speed down to 3 miles per hour and immediately started sliding down the highway at 3 miles per hour. It took us over 2 hours to get down the backside of the mountain. The entire time sliding on the snow at 3 miles per hour. The back end of the minivan from Texas was fishtailing every time I stepped on the brakes AT 3 MILES PER HOUR. By the time we reached the bottom of the 1st mountain hill I was having a panic attack and couldn't breathe as for 2 hours I honestly thought we were going to die, and for a person who had heart surgery, this was not a great way to start off my vacation. I had to park at the bottom of the pass for 20 minutes to try and calm down in order to proceed towards Breckenridge.
Once we finally got a bit of traction from having pulled off onto the shoulder of the highway we slowly made it past Dillon at 10 miles per hour, and this is when all hell broke loose. We just passed the Dillon exit and started up the hill towards the Breckenridge exit when the tires on the Minivan from Texas started spinning and we could not go anywhere on the highway. At this point all I heard was a loud blaring horn coming from behind us, looked up in my rearview mirror, and was almost killed by a semi truck that literally missed us by no more than 6 inches because we could not get any traction with the minivan that was provided to us by Payless and ended up spun out behind other vehicles that were on the highway.
At this point my heart was pounding so much I almost passed out knowing we were almost killed at the start of our vacation. No more than 3 minutes later a tow truck came along and asked us if we were ok. I could barely speak as I was so scared, and so Gilbert from Dillon Towing and Recovery asked us if it was a rental car and we said yes. He pulled in front of us, loaded us up on his tow truck and towed us the next 5 miles to the parking lot of 7-11 in Frisco. He looked at the minivan and said "I cannot believe the car rental company would give you a minivan from Texas that has No Snow or No Mud tires and not even a set of tires chains and send you out on the road with this."
The tow fee was $220 and he also stated that if the police would have got to us first it would have been a $400 ticket for not having the proper tires on the vehicle PLUS the $220 tow fee. I called the manager and tried to explain everything that happened and instead of any good customer service she argued with me for 15 minutes on the phone stating that I was incorrect, it didn't happen, and that all of her employees are persuaded to ask the customer to do an upgrade on the vehicle when checking out. So after a bad experience starting off the vacation, a bad experience with the manager, I finally called the 800# on my form and started this process. They have refused to reimburse me the $220 towage fee and insist they did nothing wrong.
I rented a car on behalf of my son who was traveling only with a debit card. I called Payless before my son reached his designation, in speaking with the customer service representative she assured me that he could rent the car with a debit card that there would be a 200.00 hold on the card. When he got to El Paso it was a totally different story. He ended up having to rent from another rental company and because it was a last minute rental the cost was double. I will never rent nor recommend Payless to anyone!
I was traveling to Atlanta and reserved a car online, opted for a Hyundai Accent or similar, for the 7 days and I received a quote of 205.00. Cool, can’t beat that! Arrived in Atlanta and the agent asked did I want to upgrade, my reply no! I already had an insurance plan that I also purchased online, so I didn’t need their insurance. He mentioned that I take the fuel option, but if I bring it back full I would not be charged. To make a long story short! I returned the car on full. When I received my final bill it was 384.38! I was charged for an upgrade, but I drove away in the Hyundai Accent, I was charged for insurance, fuel and a few other things I never requested. After contacting them I am receiving emails that say they cannot refund any money. So I’m constantly going back and forth with them! Finally notified my bank to dispute the charge and looking for a class action lawsuit claim against them!
Worst ever. I flew to Baltimore to receive cancer treatment at National Institute of Health on 4/1. Rented a car that was disgusting & unbeknownst to me had expired registration. I found out when I drove on government property for treatment & was ticketed. They refused to adjust charges. Said, “Well you did drive it.” After calling corporate they finally comped the rental & then last week found they illegally charged my cc for their ticket for no registration & a $75 administration fee. As if their office deserves a tip of $75 when they can’t even handle their business affairs & register their car. This one was expired almost a year & corporate informed me that Baltimore airport location had 6 cars that were not suppose to go out due to expired registration and every one of them was sent out with customers.
Now I’m in the middle of a serious cancer battle which is stage 4 terminal & have to deal with a dispute with them & cc company as if I’m not dealing with enough & even worse they sent me a 5 page letter with one requesting signature to charge card & they already charged it on 5/17. Also sent copy of ticket in their name & tag number on ticket didn’t match one on contract. I highly recommend nobody do business with them & I also just read they are under investigation with BBB for receiving over 800 complaints & that news was just issued 5/27. They are rude, thieves & need to be shut down. How do they rent an illegal car and not only expect customer to cover the charge but paid ticket late & also put late charge for their ticket on my cc. I’m Single mom fighting for my life against terminal cancer now have to waste energy. I don’t have to fight to get my money back that I need for my 16k a month treatment. Total ** rental company.
We booked a rental for a mid sized car online two days in advance for pick up at the Atlanta airport on May 16, 2018 at 9:00 pm. Upon arriving the only vehicle available was a Grand Cherokee Jeep so we were told at the counter but when we went downstairs to get the car the attendant said that it wasn't available due to some sort of recall (she didn't know why). So upon going back upstairs to the counter the person said that she had rented the only two remaining vehicles left. I asked why the counter sales person wasn't notified and got no answer. So I cancelled the entire reservation and went to a competitor to arrange a car. I would Never use Payless again due to their incompetency (at least in Atlanta Ga).
I reserved a car in Phoenix online through American Airlines Partners program; it looked like a great deal. However, when I got to the counter, they said they didn't have the reserved car, that I'd need to upgrade. I replied that other car companies gave me a different class car at contracted rate, if they failed to have the car I'd reserved. The guy at the counter proceeded to try to browbeat me into taking a different car at an additional $200 cost. I refused to go along with the scam and of course had to spend the extra time to find another car, and without a reservation. NEVER again will I rent from this company. I believe their practices are dishonest, if not illegal.
When we arrived at the airport we discovered they don't have their own counter at the car rental center, turns out you have to call phone number (that we were given by a DIFFERENT rental service because Payless did not provide us with the number) to have them come pick you up. We, along with other travelers, called over and over and no one even answered the phone. Finally, after over a hour later we were picked up and brought to the actual Payless rental center off site.
When we returned the car to the rental center a man came out and told us they were CLOSED and we had to return the car to the airport...we could have missed our plane home. 6 weeks after this I receive and bill for a $50.00 fee from Payless for incurring a red-light ticket in Chicago. I can't even prove that I actually got this ticket from the city of Chicago, I have received nothing from the city. The website this notice from Payless directs me to pay this alleged fee appears to be fraudulent.
Plane arrived at 11:00pm. Payless was suppose to stay open until 2:00am. They were nowhere to be found. Left me stranded at the airport at that time of night. Had to get a car from someone else. Should have done that in the first place. Never again will I do business with them!!!
I reserved a car at the ONT Cal location as the price was less than half of anywhere else. Then I decided to check reviews. I saw all of the terrible reviews and started getting real nervous. I could not cancel as I had prepaid with a debit card, so I was stuck. I arrived to pick-up and everything actually went ok. Now 2-weeks later I am not happy. Going through my bank account and see a random $39.46 charge from Payless. No e-mail, nothing! I called, just to be told she has to send a request for someone to look into it. WTF! That is unacceptable!
I called yesterday to ask when I was getting my $100 deposit back and they said I need to allow 14 days. When I asked if he would check to make sure it has been initiated, he was rude and said, "No. You have to wait 14 days." I see where this is going. So now I am waiting for some other CS rep to contact me about the unauthorized charge on my acct. DO NOT rent from them, not worth the hassle. I truly believe they make random charges thinking you won't notice, then when you call they pass you off to someone else.
Was quoted $211.99 for a car. When we arrived at Orlando Airport we went to the car rental company and was offered an upgrade for $6.00 per day, we declined...the clerk printed out the paperwork with the upgrade and we told him we weren't paying for it. He tore up the contract and said "I'll tell you what, I'll give you the upgrade and won't charge you for it." We then inquired about insurance...he informed us we needed to purchase it because Florida's accident rate was only second to New York. So when we saw the new printed out contract we were told initials, initials, initials, and sign here. Not having my glasses and feeling bullied by this Rep, I signed just to get out of the presence of this rude individual. I figured I'd deal with another person when I called to straighten this matter out.
When I called to open a ticket (as they called it) I spoke to a rep that spoke broken English...told them of our problem...I was told that I would get an email within 72 hrs. (yeah right) After not hearing from them I called in 72 hours. My email I gave them was nowhere close to the email they were trying to send it to. So much for speaking to a person who is fluent in the English language. Again I asked to reopen my ticket and have it reviewed. The charge at the counter was to be $446.46, when I checked my bank account they were trying to deduct $528.47. So I added this to my "open ticket". Long story short...my request for a car at the quoted price of $211.99 was refused because I initialed and sign the document. Biggest group of legal thieves I have ever dealt with in my 64 years here on earth. Stay away from this company, they do not live up to their name.
