I went to its office in Illinois, St. Louis Lambert Airport. The employee didn't accepted my card arguing that isn't a "real bank card", he recommended me to look for Payless phone number in Google to call them and tell them to return me the money I paid online to make the reservation. My card (Money Network card) had the money and even though my card is associated to a normal bank the Payless customer representative, refused to proceed with the car rental.

Payless Car Rental was horrible! They were rude on the phone and hung up - it was a supervisor. They price gouge and the minivan we had made mechanical issue sounds during our trip and had a huge mark on the side. We had to clean the car out completely in fear of being charged for anything left on the floor due to reading other reviews where they overcharged people. Do not use!

I declined additional car insurance as I have State Farm Insurance and was still charged an extra $120 for my 4-day car rental. When I called the Payless Car Rental in San Diego back when I was aware of this, they said it was because I didn’t provide a copy of my car insurance card. First off the Customer Service Representative DID NOT ask to make a copy of it as I would have gladly let him make a copy of it. They spoke to me as if it was MY FAULT and I do not appreciate that as it was not. Their little snide & rude comments and attitude had me say a few choice words as well. I will never rent a car through Payless Car Rental nor recommend them to anyone.

When I booked my car rental online, the app offered an option to add insurance for the vehicle, which I selected. However, when I went to pick up the car, the front desk informed me that what I added was not insurance but something else. I agreed, thinking it was fine. A week later, I was charged about $494. When I called them, they claimed the charge was for mileage, but the rental agreement clearly stated that mileage was unlimited. It feels like they are just making excuses to charge extra. I wouldn't recommend using this company.

Worst place to rent a car. These people take so much money from you. They don't record videos of the cars properly (blurry) some cars are dented and they don't show it. The workers don't want to explain to you about insurances carefully. They quickly say what insurance you got. One that has you paying $500 for any type of damage and one that DOESN'T but they never tell you that. They only tell you that you have to pay $500 for damages. My car had a small dent. They consider a small dent A MEDIUM SIZE. In their defense (their words) any small dents are considered medium size which will charge you more for it. These people are bunch of blood-sucking leeches. DON'T RENT FROM THEM. Go rent another place, the airport is more secured than they are.

On a recent trip to San Diego I booked a rental car through Delta Airlines since they had the best rate. I should have known better since I never heard of them. The people at the airport were nice enough, but that is where you need to be cautious. Their paperwork especially their Collision Damage Waiver are misleading. When presented by the agent that this was a waiver of their collision damage coverage, and by signing it I was waving their additional coverage $25 @ day. However, on my final bill there it was for the 7 days I rented the car.

When I disputed it their corporate office said the opposite that by signing the waiver I agreed to their collision damage fee. The first rental car they gave me was a worn out Hyundai Accent with 60,000 miles and stained seats. They did exchange the car the following day after we complained that stains were coming off on our clothes. And for the cherry on the sundae they are charging me an additional unexplained $60 charge. Avoid this place, stick with a reputable rental car place!

I traveled from LAX to SLC to visit my child in a residential facility for my few hours that I am granted each week. My plane was delayed and I was hoping to get my rental car quickly since I prepaid through Expedia. They do not offer online check in like other rental agencies. I was greeted with a line of over 20 people waiting for two clerks processing the rentals. They were taking their sweet time going over their high pressure sales pitches to sell as many add ons as they could. I paid $67 for what ended up being a two-hour rental since I was only there for the day. My flight was shorter than my wait in that line! I will never make the mistake of using Payless again. It wasn’t until I badgered him enough that I did NOT want the WiFi/tablet that they finally took it off. After that they brought me a vehicle with 25% fuel and I was promised 70% or more. The staff was not very easy to work with and it took about 1.5 hours to get our car (even though there was only 1 person in front of us).

This is hands down the worst experience I have ever had with a car rental company. When we picked up the car the first thing we noticed was how dirty the outside of the vehicle was. As we were driving on the highway and the sun shined on the mirrors, I was instantly blinded. I could not see out of any window or mirror. They look like they were all wiped with dirty oiled rags. Once we were out of the vehicle and did a more thorough look at the car we noticed it looked like someone had gotten sick out of the back window.

The second thing we noticed was the pungent smell of cigarette smoke. ] & proceeded to tell me I needed to go to a location 4+ hours away. I tried calling multiple times throughout this entire process to get resolved. I finally spoke to a manager that said I could call the roadside number & they would bring a vehicle to me. I called roadside, they stated it's up to the roadside people if they want to take the time & do the switch, however, I would be charged for it. This is very concerning to me that companies like this still exist today, especially when it was offered through perks@work. Ended up calling co 9Xs on vacation & have yet to get a resolution. Rented from Payless through my Delta app thinking it would be a seamless transaction. Never again. Payless is poorly managed, makes it hard to get to customer service, and when they say the problem is resolved, you find out days later that it really wasn’t. I had a one day meeting in Brooklyn. Landed at 8 am, rented a Tesla but picked up another electric car because they didn’t have any Teslas. Fine. Received a receipt of “expected charges" for my 14 hour rental and I was on my way. Returned to JFK at 6 pm and was told to leave the car with the keys inside behind a line of other Payless cars being returned. I even cleaned out my car!

Boarded my flight at 7:30 pm. 3 days later received a receipt showing I had added 2 additional days and therefore my $78 one day rental was now $250 three day rental. Two phone calls and emails to customer service showing I had boarded my flight (I had to send proof from my Delta miles page to show I actually took the return flight instead of staying in Brooklyn driving around the electric car for 2 extra days). After all this and one week later I get an “Updated Receipt” with the 2 extra days still showing and the $250 on the final total. So that means another call to Payless tomorrow to try to get the fixed. Warning. Stay Away!!! I’ll return to Sixt for all my rental needs.

We actually cleaned a door full of candy wrappers out when we received the van since it had not been cleaned prior to us receiving the car. While in Denver, it snowed around 12 inches, so we were not hiking on any trails or outdoor activities due to the weather. I've spoken with a customer service rep and she was going to send me pictures of the dirt inside but failed to send them. Payless did send over an email and when speaking with them they told me I needed to call the phone number listed in the email which there isn't one and then was told I needed to speak with "Nora ** - Payless Operations Team" but no one could provide me with an extension number for her. They did, however, charge my credit card for $250.00!! Please contact me about this matter.

This company lacks ethics and proper management! I rented a car before I got to the airport while in advance and all they had left was a 15 passenger van. I waited in line for 1.5 hours with only 14 people ahead of me. I got to the counter the guy told me he had only one vehicle left and it was the van. I believe he lied because there were several people behind me and he gave those people rental cars. When I complained, he could care less it was as if I was talking to a wall and he just told me that he could cancel my reservation. These people could care less whether or not you travel, cross-country and prearrange for a vehicle. However, after a couple of day, the engine light came on, and all the error messages, and it wouldn't drive more than 5mph. I called Roadside Assistance and was told I would get a replacement vehicle. It took about 10 hours to receive the replacement, and involved multiple phone calls in the middle of the night. I'm glad I was in a safe place or I would have frozen to death as the temperatures that night were below freezing. The replacement vehicle turned out to be a large gas-guzzling Dodge Ram truck. Because it arrived so late, I had to change my return flight 3 times. Then I was charged $150 for gas. Absolutely would not rent from them again.

When I returned home I called customer service to understand the extreme overcharges, finding only poor service and no answers. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told I would receive a call from somebody within 24-48 hours. I reserved a vehicle from 2/7 to 3/14 so that makes no sense.... I was never contacted or emailed saying I couldn't pick it up late. When I called them first they said they couldn't modify the reservation since I booked through my American Advantage... then I called back and said, "I don't need to modify. I'll just the car for 6 days," but then they said they decided to cancel it since I didn't come. They said they couldn't modify it but they could cancel it without talking to me... Rented Mid size car in San Diego for 3 days. Was given an older Nissan Versa. When I questioned if this was a mid size, was told yes. But if I wanted a car with plug in for my cell phone, I'd have to pay extra. Was very surprised. Declined since all my driving would be short distance. The car ended up being a compact size, crank windows, no adjustment to move seat up higher (I'm very short), no button to unlock doors (had to reach from front seat to rear doors to flip button), no button to unlock truck (had to shut car off every time to use the key for truck). Was surprised car didn't even have lighter plug in for cell, no form of plug in at all. If I wasn't in a hurry to get ahead of traffic, I would have asked for what I paid for. I have NEVER received a rental car so void of all the basic needs. Will NEVER rent from Payless again.

WARNING... DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY! We rented a car from Payless in Turks and Caicos, and two days later, our rental car broke down... the battery was dead. We tried the roadside assistance on the contract, and the number on the key, but was not successful getting in contact with Payless. We walked to a resort nearby to use their local phone, since we decided it had to do with making an international call on our phone. A nice employee from the resort volunteered to give us a jump with his jumper cables when he got off of work.

The young man tried to jump the rental car, with no success. He then tried the 800 number on the contract and got a recording that they were closed! This young man then asked us who we were renting from, and he happened to know the manager. He called the manager for Payless on his cell phone, we spoke to him and he said he would be coming to assist us. He arrived more than an hour later, started the car with his jumper cables, but we let him know that we were not comfortable driving this car for the rest of the week. Would it die again? The Payless manager switched cars with us, and we had no issues with the new rental.

We returned the new rental with a full tank of gas, only to discover that they charged us $40 for not bring back the car that died with a full tank of gas! They also charged us $80 for roadside assistance. We asked to speak to their manager on duty, who never showed up. We were told by the worker on duty, that it would not have mattered. I called today and spoke with Kalyan ID # **. He said they sent a letter to my home and he repeated the address, I said that’s not my address, and how could you make that mistake when you have my drivers license? He didn’t answer then said there was smell of smoke in the car and we had to detail the vehicle, he read the rental agreement and said we have the right to charge a reasonable fee at our discretion.

I said $450. Isn’t reasonable to detail a car, and I don’t smoke. I told him I wanted the charges reversed and this is fraud. He said they will stand. I asked his name and he said, "Would you like my employee ID as well." Don’t rent from them. They find something to charge you with no matter what saying you smell smoke is subjective and can be said at any time. Especially considering I don’t smoke.

I finally called the local number for Payless and reached a recording. The recording gave instructions to go 2 miles from the airport to pick up a car. I was unable to convince a taxi driver to take me to the site mentioned in the voice message. He said, “This is wrong. No one does this.” I then sent an email to the gmail offered on the Payless website but did not hear back from anyone at Payless for two days. I finally had to Uber (for $40) to my Airbnb (as did my daughter). Was unable to reach Payless the next morning.

Finally was able to get a car through Enterprise ($40 Uber back to the airport). Otherwise we would not have had a car to use on her Philly Marathon day. We got a good price and a clean car through Enterprise who saved the day, and I was able to transport her to the starting line and cheer her from various areas of the race. Generally it was an extremely inconvenient situation and the email I eventually received from Payless was non-apologetic and abrupt. They are familiar with this type of feedback. Boy was I wrong. An hour and a half later, four customers had been served (one found out that she was in the wrong line) and I finally get to the counter. It tool just a few minutes to enter/confirm my information, but we had gto stand there waiting until we get a confirmation that an actual car is available. It took me 33 minutes!!!!

The actual car was ok, but the terrible service was repeated on the return. I returned the car around noon on Nov 9. There were a few Payless employees directing us to lanes to return our cars, but no one to tell us what to do. A few of us were standing around waiting for someone to come by, process our return and give us a receipt like I am used to. Finally, we find an employee and asked them what we needed to do. He said to just leave the key in the car and we would get the receipt emailed to us.

11/10 still no receipt so I contact the company. Spend about half an hour going through the rental info. 11/11 still nothing. 11/12 I get a text stating that my rental is overdue and to please contact customer service. I call them and eventually they confirm that I had reached out to them on 11/10, but that it would take 2-3 days before the issue would be resolved. 2-3 days to get confirmation of a return and a receipt is absolutely ridiculous!!!!! All other car companies have automated systems where the cars have barcodes and just need to be scanned in, and end mileage recorded, which takes all of 30 seconds. Not sure why Payless who is part of the Avis group is so different and takes days to do what should be almost immediate. Whoever they have running the car processing for them at Phoenix should be fired. I have never experienced such a screwed up operation in years and years of traveling.

When I asked about the discrepancy in the price he told me it was due to a 250$ security fee and that the price would self correct when the car was returned, when I received my Bank card bill it was 858$, when I called the location and asked about the credit she said the price difference was due to a $39.00 a day upgrade, which I did not request, The car pictured in the ad was a Chrysler 300, the car I received a beat up Kia with 60k miles with peeling paint and a number of scratches and dents.... Never again. I learned the meaning of the old adage "you get what you pay for" with this company. I was in a wreck in my rental (0% my fault. Traffic stopped on the highway. I stopped, but the guy behind hit the gas instead of the breaks and rear-ended me going 60 MPH) and I tried to call the customer service/roadside assistance to let them know and receive help. Their customer service and roadside assistance are two call centers who constantly redirect you to each other, until you are either redirected to the starting robot menu list that their phone number takes you to, or just plain hung up on.

After spending countless hours (at least 12 HOURS) calling them, I finally reach a person who is willing/able to help. They say they filed a report and that I will have another rental car driven to me, and they'll call me when it's on its way. After a day and a half of waiting in a hotel, I call back to check on the status, and the next person I get a hold of says "There are no notes on your account". So I tell them what happened again, and they also said they just filed a report. When I get back into town (by renting another car through a separate company) I go into the airport to let them know what happened to their car, and ask what happened with the support. It turns out Avis owns Payless, and the only representative there can't help me (this was at like 4:00 PM).

I call back customer service again a week later to make sure they at least know their car is in a wrecker lot. The person who I get a hold of (after hours of calling) says "There are no notes on your account", I let them know what happen again, and ask them to give me the report number that they're filling so I can use it for later reference if I need to.

A month later, today, I get a call from the Payless Recovery Department saying they're going to report that I stole the car to the police because it wasn't returned to them. I gave them all the information AGAIN, and I'm hoping that someone will actually put that information in their system. I had travel insurance for the trip, nothing should be coming out of my pocket. Right? Wrong. 2 months later they charge my credit card $4600+ dollars (right at the end of the month when credit reports go out), and I have to go to the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint to get them to drop it.

TLDR: This company has abysmal customer service. If you're in an accident in one of their vehicles, God have mercy on your soul. Dealing with them has been more traumatic for me than the accident itself. Shame on them for real.

I immediately called Payless to let them know that I wouldn't be able to pick up my car until the next morning. I should have been picking up around 7pm but, because of the flight cancellation, it would be the next morning at 10am. The agent told me not to cancel since Payless will hold my reservation for 24 hours.

When I arrived the next morning, I was told that the Payless location at the San Diego airport was an independently owned location vs. a corporate location and their policy didn't hold reservations for 24 hours. They didn't have any cars left that fit my original booking, but for an extra $250 they could probably find something for me. Unfortunately, I simply didn't have time to argue with them and just paid the additional money. At the end of the day, they saw an opportunity to take advantage of me and did.

Total scam. Doubled the price of my rental when I went to pick it up. Said it was california law that I had to have some very specific fringe insurance benefit. When I showed them a copy of my insurance, I was told that it did not qualify and there would be no choice but to pay for the extra insurance through them. Was also told that I would be put in a very fragile and small smartcar, not the car I rented, unless I paid for the upgrade. Started using manipulative tactics "Well obviously you care about your wife's safety and wouldn't want anything to happen to her, right? You'd better upgrade, it will just be $20 per day." After much back and forth, I got him to clarify that it was actually an additional $20 per day on top of my existing rental, not $20 per day as he originally explained. Also tried to get me to pay extra to fill up the car before renting it.

Note: it's not at all mandated by law that I purchase additional fringe insurance benefits that they, as the rental company, should have for their own fleet. I repeated many times that I want the quote that I had paid for online, with nothing extra. They told me again there was absolutely no possible way for me to get a car in the entire state without having pre-purchased that insurance on my own plan (well in advance), or by purchasing it through them on the spot. Explained I would pay this at every company I went to (a complete fabrication). Of course, you can't cancel your reservation on the spot and get a refund according to their policies.

Incredibly predatory -- website made absolutely no mention of this, and the online rental agreement made no mention either. We picked up the vehicle, which was not a smartcar at all. it was a roomy midsize vehicle in rough shape, absolutely reeking of fumes in the cabin to the point we felt sick within minutes and had to get a different car. After complaining to several people, the girl doing the inspection said "the front desk guys regularly lie about insurance to get higher commissions. Show XYZ your insurance and they'll remove it." Again, after much back and forth (everyone felt the need to explain to me what insurance is from a VERY elementary level) they were able to remove the charge and actually give me what I had paid for on their site. Whole thing took about 1hr15min to resolve. Never use this company.

They were out of these, however they did have one that was just returned Denali if I wanted. Seeing no choice I took this vehicle with 1/4 tank of gas. Specifically told just return with the same amount. I returned with 1/2 tank and they still charged me 147.00 extra. I have gone through the customer services back and forth for over a month and they refuse to give me my money because they are not satisfied with my receipts. Why do I have to provide receipts for the inadequate process.

So basically this is what they do, a person returns a vehicle with 1/4 tank, they charge this person 10.00 a gallon to fill it up. But they don't fill it up, instead it is passed on to the next renter and process is the same. This is a SCAM and there should be laws against a company double charging for the same gas. The paper work I signed clearly said to return vehicle with the same amount of fuel as when I picked up. I'm so nice I went ahead and returned with a 1/2 tank gas. Lesson learned is Payless Rental Company are crooks and be nice gets you nowhere. Stay clear away from this company. They are CROOKS.

I don't know how old it was, but when I plugged my iPhone into the USB port (no Bluetooth) it identified it as an "iPod." The thing also made kind of a screeching noise when I accelerated, as if the emergency brake was still on (it wasn't).

The chatty clerk also charged me for insurance when I asked it to be waived. I had to sign/initial my name 9 times on a tiny hard to read screen, while the clerk chatted me up about where to go for the best happy hour deals. I got the impression that she was doing this deliberately to distract me. My initial bill was $170 more than what I was told it would be when I reserved the vehicle. When my flight was cancelled and I needed the car an extra day, they quoted me a price of $160. I made a special trip back to the rental center to return the car and get another one from a different rental agency (Alamo). That experience was 1000% better -- I got a brand new Nissan Camry with all the modern amenities for less than the initial price of the Versa. But that consumed an additional 90 minutes out of my day.

I read every word during the online reservation process and didn't see anything about additional mandatory insurance. Every time I've rented a car, any mandatory insurance is ALWAYS included in the reservation and OPTIONAL insurance is solicited at time of arrival. These jerks try to tell you they're doing you a favor.

Once you get taken to their location off-airport in the middle of the night they tell you that not only was insurance not included but that the insurance costs more than the rental! They can tell you any number they want. There's obviously nothing you can do. And this guy was so rude. I was arguing with him and he told me to "walk back to the airport." I wasn't about to walk down a highway in the middle of the night with all my bags, and I'm pretty sure the airport was already closed, so I had no choice.

The likely auto-generated response was not sincere, nor did it address the serious issues that I mentioned. Below is my reply to the generic response that fell short of professional business standards. I rented the car on March 31, 2023 at DFW airport.

I am appalled at your response. It was entirely insincere. Nothing you said was an attempt to address the substandard rental car experience truly. The pictures I submitted confirmed the incident, and yet you still failed to offer compensation or attempt to address my situation directly. I am surprised that even after seeing that your company placed customers' health and safety in danger, you only offered a generic response. It is as if you view the car's overall poor condition as a minor inconvenience and not a serious issue. If I were not in a bind and did not have to make an appointment for my parent's memorial service, I would have canceled the rental on the spot and gone with another company.

Clearly you can see that it was more than just the interior of the vehicle. Yes, the interior was dirty; however, the exterior was filthy as well. Not to mention the dangerous tread level of the tires should be addressed. I did not receive the standard of service that I paid for. These issues were more than minor. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PLACE - COMPULSORY INSURANCE AND HIDDEN FEES TRIPLED CHARGES. Needless to say, I was overly excited when I initially found this place that rented cars for a lot less than the bigger car rentals. According to their website, I was renting a standard SUV (Hyundai Tucson) from January 25th - February 4, 2023 (10 days) for $260.32 (base price) plus an additional $104.47 for taxes and fees. The reservation clearly stated it was $364.79 at time of pick up.

However, nothing could it be farther away from the truth. When I got there, Alberic, the sales rep behind the counter, told me that it was mandatory to get their compulsory insurance, which immediately raised the estimated charges from $364.79 to $930.18 ($565.39 more than what I was quoted. This amount also included other taxes). Needless to say, I wasn’t happy at all. I explained to the sales rep that I always use American Express, which covers as a car rental insurance, and that I also had GEICO as my driver’s insurance company, to which he only said, “if you don’t get our insurance, you don’t get to rent our cars”.

I saw other very angry customers making the same point I was trying to make, but the sales rep seemed very unmoved by customers’ claims. Due to the circumstances, I had to rent the car for one day, which cost me $138.42, but luckily I was able to get a car from elsewhere, where they didn’t try to scam money from me.

It’s extremely sad that Payless Car Rental tries so hard to take advantage of perfectly insured U.S. Citizens’ drivers. This type of practice leaves a very sour taste on tourists’ mouth. The sales rep was not disrespectful, but his nonchalant & unconcerned attitude, just added salt to the wound. Other than the young fellows handing and receiving cars, who were very humble and respectful, the customer service employees and its ownership should be ashamed of themselves.

They told me that's not their problem, I need to speak to the third party payer, who was Priceline. I call Priceline, they tell me to call Allianz Insurance Company. After HOURS on the phone, Allianz refuses to pay for the dent because the claim was made outside the "45 day window" of my coverage. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS FRAUDULENT COMPANY! I WILL NEVER USE THIS SERVICE AGAIN!!!

I failed to remove the gas hose from a Payless Rental car and as I was backing away, the hose stretched and snapped off the plastic gas cap. The cost of a plastic gas cap is $45 and the plastic housing it attaches to is probably another $100 or so. Yet, 8 months after this happened a third-party insurance company made a claim of $3,200 and showed repairs to areas behind the gas cap and other areas that suffered no impact whatsoever. The only contact with the car was the outstretch gas hose and the only damage was the gas cap. This is such a shameless money grab that I would never rent from this company again.

For a company that calls themselves, Payless, it is absolutely NOT true! They have so many hidden fees that they do not even tell you about. My car rental was double the amount that I selected when reserving my rental in Chicago! The customer service was poor at the counter and no explanation of all these charges, let alone I signed for something that included more than what I was told I was signing for. Now, dealing with customer service, they have the opportunity to make this right but are only acknowledging 1/4 of my charges but telling me, "Thank you for the feedback" and sympathizing with me. **! I will NEVER use them again, and you should too!

A zero rating would have been my choice. The Payless rental service in San Diego Airport is a franchise. A more appropriate name would be "PAYMORE" or "WORTHLESS". I have rented twice from this company at SAN and every time they have swindled me. The first time our flight was delayed and we arrived at the counter over an hour after the reservation time. They said they could not give the car for the reserved rate and nearly doubled the rate from 200 to over 400 dollars. Last weekend I reserved a so called "payless special." When doing the paperwork at the desk, the last thing you sign is the total price which was suddenly 30 dollars more than the rate I had reserved the vehicle for. I had a print out of the reservation with price and reservation number with me, but they would not budge. They wasted two hours of my time.

The "special" was a rundown tiny vehicle with more scratches, dents you would think were possible and a damaged windscreen. I was hesitant to rent this car but when I went back they offered me 4 similar vehicles in similar terrible shape, so I decided to take the initial one assigned. The tiny damage slip was filled completely with all the damage notations. After bringing it back 2 days later, I asked the attendant for a receipt, but he said it would be emailed to me. Had to call them a few days later to get my drop off receipt. I first called the central payless office but they said they could not help me as it is a franchise and not in their system. All in all again a horrible experience. For me never again. This Payless franchise needs to be investigated for ripping off their customers.

I would go out of my way to never rent from this car company again. A group of us had to wait almost 40 minutes for a shuttle from the airport to the car rental location. Watched multiple shuttles for all the other rental companies come and go. When I finally called them, I got a very rude woman who said the shuttle would be there "any minute." It finally arrived about 15 minutes later.

The representative asked me if I was staying in the PA/NJ area, and I said yes, I was going to New Jersey. She never warned me that I would either need an EZ pass or cash for tolls. So when I was driving up to the first toll and had to make that choice, they basically left me no choice but to break the law and go through EZ pass because I didn't have cash (who has cash anymore?? lol). I was really uneasy about this and had to do it several times. It turns out they just bill my credit card, but this would have been lovely to know upfront. I doubt, had I been pulled over, that the state trooper would have been as understanding.

The actual building is nowhere near the airport--it's not even near the other off-site car rental places. And bringing the car back was concerning because I had to stop and get gas by myself and this is NOT a safe neighborhood. When I brought the car back, we had to witness the customer service rep and the shuttle driver get into it over the walkie-talkies because he was telling her he needed gas, and she told him no, he needed to take us to the airport. Now, I wanted to get to the airport quickly just like anyone else, but I was not interested in running out of gas. Luckily we made it, but the whole thing was awkward and a bit unnerving not knowing if we would make it. All in all, the worst car-rental experience I have ever had.

We rented a vehicle with Payless through our American Airlines reservation. After waiting for an extensive amount of time at their counter, the vehicle they provided had dents, scratches and other blemishes across the exterior. The interior was filthy and smelled. As a result of the first wait time we were running late for our meeting, we decided to just take the vehicle and have the lot attendant note all of the issues. We asked the attendant if he had noted all of the damage and his response was "I circled the entire car" referring to the vehicle likeness on their "pink slip". Having the issues noted by their representative, we continued on with our weekend.

When we arrived at the airport car rental return the attendant's eyes widened and he looked dumbfounded, we immediately informed him we received the vehicle in this condition and showed him a copy of the pink slip reflecting the condition we had received the vehicle. He and another female attendant continued to process the vehicle, looking inside and asking us to verify we had all of our belongings and for the keys. Neither of the representatives mentioned any interior smell, we did tell them the interior was filthy when we picked it up, we were not warned or informed there could be a charge to "repair the damage" of the smelly/dirty interior. Last week we received a letter from Payless Car Rental "Customer Service" which stated they intended to charge us $450.00 for "damages".

We immediately sent an email, with all of the pictures we took at the rental car lot when we first saw the vehicle along with a copy of their "pink slip" noting the vehicle was really unfit for rental. This morning we received an email response with spelling and grammatical errors basically telling us, sorry, the charges are valid but they would offer us 25% off. You cannot make this stuff up, will never ever ever use this or another "discount" rental car company again. They also pre-charged us to fill the tank, there was no option for us to waive this and return the car full, thankfully, we read reviews of prior customers who returned the car full and were still charged, we returned the vehicle without filling the tank. That cost us a $25.00 "customer service" fee and $82.58 or 16.2 gallons, the tank's capacity, at $5.10/gallon. Thank you for the platform and ability to share our story and prevent some one else being treated the same way.

Bait & Switch organization. Rude and disrespectful. I arrived at the car rental desk at 9:50 am, 2.5 hours late, the person who greeted me told me my reservation was cancelled because I was late and my rate of $350 for a midsized SUV was no longer valid. They then tried to rent me the same class of car, exact same, for $600. When I said no and asked for the manager, the gentleman mocked me for threatening him and engaged the manager (sitting next to him). The agent and manager then said they could give me a Kia Soul for the $350 (even though I reserved a Midsize SUV, eg, Jeep Compass.) I asked if the Kia Soul was a midsize SUV and the manager said it was. Of course, it's not.

The deception, mocking, ridiculing and overall horrible experience will certainly dissuade me from renting a car from Payless and using Hotwire in the future. I ended up leaving and renting a car from a different rental agency, one that was very respectful, laughed at the fact Payless called a Kia Soul a midsize SUV, and told me they hold reservations for 24 hours. I also found this to be a bait and switch tactic and really think the FTC and Justice Departments should be aware of. The whole experience was terrible.

I waited for 30 minutes to have my car brought to me and no one showed. Then I found out the car I reserved was not available. I was reassigned a car. It also was not available.

I could not get my money back to go to another car rental business! I was told there would be a $250 hold on my account because I was using a debit card plus the car charges. I was charged a fuel fee, but I would get that charge back if I returned the car with a full tank of gas. Well, after 3 hours, yes 3 hours, I finally got a car. The car they brought me had never been vacuumed from the previous customer and had remnants of someone who ate in the car. So much for coronavirus cleaning! It was returned 3 days later. I received an email bill and, I was charged for a car I never was given or drove!! The charge was for a week. I never got my fuel charge back and as of today after contacting customer service twice, I am still be being overcharged for a larger car that was never given to me or that I drove. I needed to rent a vehicle to attend my daughter’s graduation in San Francisco, online I chose the option to rent a vehicle with unlimited mileage, I picked up the vehicle on May 26, 2022 around 7pm from Payless car rental at the airport. The problem began on 5/28/2022, while on a trip from hotel room to a store, going up a hill, the vehicle’s transmission gave out. My reasoning for this is because in the am I saw transmission fluid leak where the car was parked at hotel the morning after. At 12:30am I rolled the car into a safe location to park the car. I dialed the office number and used #3 prompt service to get roadside assistance, I was not connected w/ anyone and was given a 1800 to dial if no one answered. I was connected to someone who asked me for an RA number. The number on paperwork was not on their system. Was advised to call company and get correct number in the am when the office open.

We purchased an Uber, got back to hotel, & at 7am we called the company and were given an alternative ID number. We called roadside assistance, they set up a tow and Uber service to go pick up the car rental replacement. The Uber dropped us off at a random Avis office that was closed. We tried calling back and that is when the Run around began. An employee at this office that was closed was kind enough to give us a ride to the airport that was near by thinking maybe the car was there. And simply the drop off was a mistake. Well come to find out there is no Payless at the airport. I begin calling customer service back who tells me to call roadside assistance and getting transferred to supervisors, who told me to wait and transfer me back to the original customer service prompt. I also called the rental place and left voicemails or was hung up by the company, or was also transferred.

I get in line at Avis, because no Payless, entire time still trying to get ahold of someone to help me on the phone. Avis employee sends us out of airport telling us there is Payless nearby. We get in Uber to this Payless rental car place nearby that ended up being permanently closed. I began calling again, finally get ahold of someone who begins new ticket (roadside assistance) for an Uber to pick us up and take us to the correct place for a replacement car rental. My phone was dying, so I give them a second phone # to contact me on send me notifications. I get notification that the new car rental replacement is in the Oakland intl airport for pick up. But no Uber notification. I begin calling back, and am transferred person to person. It’s afternoon now and we are hungry. We walk to a place to eat 20 mins away.

Finally get ahold of someone, who tells me Uber is waiting for us at the SF into airport for pick up. I tell them why there? And why no notification to the correct phone when I told them my phone was dying. And sure enough when I charged my phone, the Uber notifications were being sent to the phone that had died. I finally call my daughter and ask her to pick my girlfriend and I up and take us to the Oakland intl airport. We arrive and the MVA# they provided us for replacement car did not exist. An Avis employee that was handling Payless rental place as well began calling the Payless at the SD intl airport and they were on the phone for about an hour getting the run around as well. Eventually they stopped picking up the phone or hanging up on the Avis employee.

Avis employee took notes and documented everything and gave us a replacement car and wrote up new paperwork but that would match our paperwork. Told us to drop it off at Payless car rental and gave us her contact information to give to Payless. While returning car at SD intl airport on 05/29/2022 @ approx 10:55pm the Payless employee was rude and yelling at me to take vehicle to Avis drop off although I had paperwork and was given instructions to drop off Payless. I went to Avis drop off and was told they understood was I was telling them, but that I need to drop off at Payless. The employee Greg walked me over to Payless and tried explaining the situation to the woman employee who began yelling at us that she didn’t care, and would not take the vehicle back and she didn’t care about the car. While I tried to ask for the woman’s name, she would not give it to me.

I also stated to her that I would never rent from them ever again and they also had the worst customer service. As I was talking. A gentlemen who did not look like an employee but was the woman’s fiancé began walking towards me and yelling at me. He told me he was the woman’s fiancé and that I was yelling at his woman and that he was going to kick my **. The Avis employee began ushering me away. All while this man began following us. The Avis employee could not close our account but that he would take the vehicle for my safety. I left the garage area and was picked up by girlfriend who was waiting outside. I contacted the Avis employee from Oakland intl airport, who told me to make formal complaint and then the contact customer service and try to get ahold of corporate. My account is still not closed even though I dropped off the vehicle. I have the call log available. Of me being on the phone all day Saturday.

I have the text notifications available as well from roadside assistance. And i imagine there is cameras in the garage to see the interaction between myself and the Payless employee and her fiancé. The footage should also show me dropping off the vehicle. I shall try contacting Payless customer service next. Do Not Rent From Payless, I should have done research, except I just blindly trusted a rental agency at an airport thinking they would be more legitimate.

In what felt like a "shell game" when adding insurance, it was explained that we had an option to put a security deposit of $3000 if we were electing the least amount of insurance, or, $300 which would cover any damages to the car with $0 deductible. We opted for the full coverage at $300. The total invoice when we picked up the car was almost twice the online quote at $1,018.98 USD. It was explained that we would be refunded $300 when we returned the care. Still how would got to what would have been $718.98 is beyond me but what the heck - I mean we're on vacation, right? Now I see on my credit card statement an additional $300 at the time of the rental which means I'm now paying $1318.98. I intend to dispute at least some of these charges with my credit card company. In addition to being asked to pay for damages we were not responsible for, we also had about a 30 min. wait at the airport (with an infant in tow) when we picked up the vehicle because Payless had rented the car to two different customers at the same time. From start to finish, this was a terrible experience and evidence that Payless' fleet and administrative management is incredibly poor. Do not trust this company. Rent elsewhere.

DO NOT RENT FROM PAYLESS. Customer service is nonexistent. At Ft. Lauderdale airport they are only open from 8-4, yet they let me make a reservation to pick up a car at 4 and return it at 7. This place is like the blind leading the blind but I'm sure the blind would be more efficient. Our flight got canceled so we had to book a different flight and would not be there until 11 pm. Called them to let them know and the person on the phone didn't really care, they are more of a "just a live person answering the phone". He said ok. Show up the next morning at promptly at 8am. Tried to charge us $400 more and this is for 1 day less. Um NO. They got it down to $200 something more, again NO. Wanted us to cancel our reservation and then make a new one. Nope, our reservation was non refundable. So after an hour and a half, YES 1 1/2 we finally get a vehicle. Not the vehicle we reserved of course but at least we had a vehicle.

We needed to drop the vehicle off at 7am so we could catch our flight. They didn't tell us about drop off, so we call, BETWEEN 8-4, and the lady I talked to said (and it took awhile for her to get to it) that we are to park the car and there is a drop box to leave the keys. We get to the drop off place and other cars are pulling in so there is a line and there are people working, so we parked it, gave the keys to a person and happily left. Like I said blind leading the blind. Worst experience renting a car ever.

Easy airport experience and checkin - no upselling; delays; etc. Car exceeded expectations - reserved Mazda CX5 or equivalent for 2 adults; 2 kids; bags for week of skiing and ski bag w kid skis. Car was top-end...leather seats; heated seats - front and back; all safety features including headsup display. Only lacked Nav, Apple carPlay or Google. Clean, low mileage. Price was 60% of major brands. Combination of easy experience; high-quality vehicle; and great price vastly exceeded my expectations and gets 5 star review.

They said I didn't show proof of insurance, even though they NEVER requested it! So frustrating! We used Capital One Travel to rent a car while visiting Denver. We picked up our car and took out all the “extras” so we wouldn’t get nailed with a “scratch”. It tripled the price of the car. I was fine with it as I expected to get gouged. Here is the kicker…We retuned the vehicle on time (technically 2 hours early), full tank of gas (have the receipt) and hopped on the shuttle. No one came out to “receive” the vehicle and we followed the instructions to leave the keys in the vehicle. We left the vehicle and followed the guy to the shuttle.

Fast forward 3 days, I received a charge on my cc for over 1,000.00 followed by an email saying I didn’t return the vehicle. I tried calling immediately and was hung up on multiple times and was told to contact a fake #. I finally got a hold of someone who took down my info and concluded the conversation with “you should really take pictures of you dropping off the car”. What inking of businesses model is this?!?! They obviously didn’t log the car in properly and I am now suspected of stealing it?!?! Payless!!!! Shame on you!!!! Now I just sit and wait to see if they “find” their car….

I have never written a review before but feel that people's safety is at risk by renting from this company. We reserved an SUV from the Denver location. Despite calling a day ahead to make sure that they had the vehicle we reserved, we were informed that they no longer had a vehicle of that size (this was after an hour long wait on line) and we were given a Jeep instead. If we had all 4 of our original party, we never would have fit in the car with all of our luggage and skis. During the drive to Breckenridge, it started snowing and we were skidding all over the road almost colliding with several cars (even when going at 10 miles an hour). We had to keep pulling over to let other cars pass as we were the only vehicle on the road with this problem. When we finally got to Breckenridge in one piece our vacation was further ruined by the absolutely useless customer service and roadside assistance. Do not rent from this company. I arrived at the counter and was told that since I had stated a 10:30 arrival and it was 12:30 they had put my reservation into the no show category and it was no longer valid. I am a senior citizen who had left my home 10 hours prior and was disheartened to hear this. The clerk said they had very few cars left but after a lot of friendly talk he found one although he couldn't give me the rate I had reserved at. He started at $35 a day and then because he was "nice" he reduced it to $30 a day. He showed me the contract with that figure on it.

Long story short - I returned the car and when I got home came across the contract. My original reservation totaled $273.00 and in the end I was charged $687 - both for my original contract and for the one drawn up at the counter. Trying to get through to an actual person is near impossible but will never rent from this company again.

When we returned the vehicle, there were no attendants to assist us, so we followed their instructions for the return of the vehicle. Now, it is 4 months later and because we did not take out their "waiver" insurance we are being charged for damages to said vehicle, without any documentation. We have requested pictures of said damages, but they have refused to supply any. Ironically, the damage charges are equal to the "waiver" insurance we did not take out. We thoroughly checked over our vehicle before returning it and other than the damage which existed at pick up, there were no marks or damages to the vehicle.

Then after I complained to them about the ** charges, they decided to add another $1,100 in false damages charge to my credit card as retribution for complaining, but not until a full 44 days after returning the car and 2 weeks after challenged them about the rental overcharge. They refuse to provide photos of the non-existent damage, nor will they provide an invoice from a vendor to fix said mysterious late appearing damage without any evidence. Anyone who does this a thief.

I had to file a dispute with my credit card company to get the overage reversed and then I had to file a fraud charge with my credit card company to get the subsequent fake damages charge removed. I did not need a rental at the time of purchasing airline tickets. After speaking to the PCR rep at the counter she reassured me I could use the AA card, I did not have it in my possession to show her since it was getting mailed to me. She said once I get it to call PCR and update the payment method. I tried calling after getting the rental placed onto my debit card, they said they could not update the payment until I turned in the rental.

I waited, I turned in the car and the AA card turns out it is not in fact a credit card, but this whole time PCR was not clear the whole time on what kind of card I had, and never asked me if it was a major credit card. I should have done my research but needed a rental ASAP and got it. I wish PCR would have been more transparent on what kind of card I had instead of telling me that yes in fact I could use that card, when I could not, so they assumed the whole time. Now I'm paying over $600 for a rental on my debit card that I could not afford from the beginning. Also, the car was a 2019 or 2020 and when I drove 60-80 mph on the freeway it smelt like something was burning under the hood, I called PCR and told them but since there was no PCR where I was, they could not even give me a rental.

They need to be affiliated with other rental companies in the area due to this, they just told me roadside assistance can help me and/or they can come get the car. The Bluetooth was super crappy, when I would plug my phone charger into the USB, it keep stopping the music and would say, "No supported files"!!?? Then I used the cig charger and it was a bit better but the BT would disconnect ALL THE TIME! It was extremely frustrating. It had barely enough power to get out of its own way. We travel about 6 times a year and this was an unforgettable experience to say the least. I would never trust payless car rental again.

I fought with them from 830 am until 1pm. The man at Kissimmee knew I was at the airport. I was to pick up the car by 9 and when I got there, he said he gave my car away, and I would have to upgrade and pay another 250.00! I had no choice since I had already paid 40.00 for Uber to get us there. This car was paid for and confirmed! Please don't rent from Priceline or Payless! Rented a car on Expedia for Payless at Atlanta airport. Rental was for a minivan. Went to the counter to pick up the vehicle and the very rude customer service woman proceeded to tell me that we rented a truck and that if we wanted a van we would have a $350 upcharge. After showing her our agreement she insisted that we pay an upcharge. After trying to get a hold of somebody at Payless on the phone, she waived us overstating she put in my last name as my first name and had the wrong vehicle. We got our car.

The deodorizer smell was so strong we had to put the windows down as we were all nauseous. In addition, the car was extremely dirty which was surprising considering we are in the middle of a pandemic. The next morning when we all got in the car there was an overwhelming smell of **. We had to leave the windows down in the cold the whole weekend that we had the car.

When returning the car we reported to the person who we dropped it off with how the smell was horrific and how dirty the car was. She stated to call corporate. Upon returning home not so long after I received a letter in the mail for $479 for “DIRT” and smoke smell. This is completely absurd. Not only did we have the worst customer service I have ever experienced, Payless in NO WAY provided friendly efficient service and a clean car in which they say they strive for and I find it insulting that they would have the audacity to charge ME for a smoke-filled disgusting vehicle in which was overlooked by the previous client.

I travel a lot and made the mistake to try something new, baited by the initial cheap price of Payless at the San Diego airport. Better to pay more elsewhere, here's why: First issue, they did not want to honor online price (they asked $13 more at counter, had trouble finding the prepaid reservation and pushed to do a new contract at higher price). Then wanted $1000 deposit rather than normal $250. Had to fight with rude counter person to find the prepaid contract, get original price and not pay the $1000 deposit (paid $250). Told to sign there are no issues with the car before seeing car. When I complained person said, 'What do you care? You bought the collision waiver'. Next issue, 13 days into the contract I left keys in the car and the car auto locks. No sensor to protect from locking your keys.

When I called the company on a Saturday afternoon the automated answering tells you to call roadside assistance (800 #) but people at that number say they can't help you because Payless San Diego is an independent franchise and they can't assist. Payless sends you to an answering machine. Left message, no answer. Thus, car is stuck. Lucky I have an AAA with roadside. Will never use Payless as they should be really called 'Useless'. If they had polite people who later supported you, the initial price was good. The hassles are not worth it to me. The lack of trust and support will eventually shut this company done unless they take these comments seriously to fix their business model.

I've rented cars from them now for three years and had no problems until now! I rented a car on 09/17/2020-09/20/2020 Nashville TN Airport location. I arrived to pick up the car and had to walk 15 minutes to get to the location. When I arrived I only saw Avis and Budget so the Avis representative checked me in and also directed me to the car location. The car was great a 2020 Toyota Avalon. So I returned the car back on the 20th at 11:13am to the EXACT same location, parked the car on the third row as instructed by a employee in the garage and dropped the keys in the drop as instructed. Three days later I am getting charged a additional day and more! My rental total was 183.03. They charge my credit card 268.00 way more than a additional day.

I called the company customer service. Very RUDE. File the claim and they tell me, "We will look at the cameras and verify drop off and charges will be corrected." LIES. Two days later I get a email at 8:00pm at night saying charges are valid, I called customer service again a rude rep and he says, "We are not negotiating with you. It's valid. I suggest you call your credit card." So I hung up and did so. I also emailed the airport supervisor with no response at all.

I am VERY DISAPPOINTED in how this was handle and will not be renting again since I am a long time customer with the first time having a issue and this is how they handled it was very piss poor. AND WILL BE TELLING ALL my referrals I sent to not rent again and will put this on every review I can making me pay for a day I didn't have the vehicle is STEALING and doing this time of our country situation is very sad and disappointing. Also when I looked at the the receipt they have me down for a Toyota 4Runner the wrong vehicle as well. I will put this on every review I can.

After finally getting an answer to go to Avis/Budget the lady up there did not care to help us out. I finally get my car and it stunk like cigarettes and weed. Then I flip up the back seat and it was covered in ashes. I had to return the car only to find the person behind the counter did not know how to work the Payless computer system as he was an Avis employee (and I will say he had excellent customer service). However when the Payless employee finally showed up to the counter he too had no idea how to work his own system.

He then told the Avis employee that I just had to wait for another employee to wrap up their break and I just had to wait another 10 to 15 minutes which I did patiently. Then when they finally fix the computer to re-open my order so that I can get a new vehicle they decide to give me a Buick Enclave and that was an upgrade from what I had originally asked for. However the minute I get into this car it has a huge burn mark in the driver seat. It’s stunk like cigarettes too. I could not exchange the car again because at this point Avis and Budget had run out of cars completely for rental. And then I find that the plates were expired. And when I called Payless and left a complaint. They said, "Sorry. Nothing we can do about it." It’s my fault though. I got what I paid for. The name Payless might as well change to garbage.

Payless Car Rental in San Diego is running a bait and switch operation. The way they work is to put some exceptionally low prices out on the travel sites. I made my reservation through Hotwire. Then when you arrive they have a zero adjustment policy. If your rental time is at 4:00pm then you have to be there exactly at 4:00pm. I arrived four hours early. Then they claim they have no car for you and offer the switch. First they offered me a bigger car for a lot more money. Then they said they had to add a whole additional day of rental to get the car 4 hours early. In the end, they gave me a smaller car at a higher price than what I had the reservation for. They also are very pushy about paying for rental car insurance coverage and demand proof of insurance coverage if you refuse to buy. This is not an upfront organization. You are better to pay more and rent from one of the more respectable rental companies.

I booked a car thru. Booking.com and the reservation was with Payless. I've never rented with them before and the quote was for 3 days for $94.44 for the cheapest car. I arrived at Austin Airport, the woman tried to upsale me saying all small cars were gone and offered a mini-van and I said no. I declined all extra insurance and she looked very unhappy. When I returned the car, I was billed $141 for 2 days and 2 hours of rental. It turned out that (and this is NOT on the contract I signed) I was required to return the car by 3pm which I wasn't aware of. The agent didn't point this out for me.

Furthermore, nowhere on the contract did it say that if I returned the car later, I would be billed close to $10 per hour...I think the woman purposely didn't mention anything and anyway this was NOT on the contract. I tried to talk to the customer service and the guy just kept saying the billing was correct. So I was billed $141 for renting the cheapest car on the selection for 2 days and 2 hours. This company doesn't do business honestly. It should not exist. Apparently, it is part of Avis? I don't understand how company can run business like that. This happened on 3/4-3/6 at the Austin Airport. Booking.com ref. is available upon request.

Big surprise when I got to the counter, the actual price increased by 100% and agent who was somewhat passive aggressive stated that CA law requires me to take insurance with them. Never heard of that since I have been renting cars for a decade. Since I am covered with my credit card and personal car insurance - I always waive insurance provided by the rental car company. Also to note this is not a requirement, however, counter agent positioned it as such and told him to cancel my reservation. Went to Enterprise instead, paid less and did not have to take insurance with rental car company. I would recommend any car rental company BESIDES Payless which is actually PAYMORE and deceptive practices.

When I gave my confirmation number to the representative, his first comment was "We already gave that car away but I will get you another car but there is a charge of $150.00 that will be added". It just seemed to go downhill from there, he demanded that I take the insurance and I informed him that my company policy covers me on any rental vehicles. He demanded that I produce the pink slip and that I contact the company to confirm coverage.

I have rented cars from all the major leasing companies and have always declined coverage and they have accepted it. There was no way of getting around this fellow so I accepted the coverage and as soon as I did that he dropped the $150.00 charge? When all was said and done on the paperwork, I spent another 1/2 hour waiting for a car. I went thru Expedia and points and will never do that again. I would give them 0 stars if I could post that way but since I must give them a star rating it is 1. Wish I would have done my research a little better about this company before I rented with them as I would have been able to avoid the headache that has come from this experience. Do yourself a favor and pay the extra money for a car with a better rental company.

There were unauthorized charges made to my credit card account. They made this charge, AFTER I had already paid in full for the car and dropped the car off. I couldn't get a hold of anyone at the airport to find out what the charges were for and had to make MULTIPLE calls to the "customer service" line. Once I finally got a copy of the invoice to see what the charges were, I found it was for PDW which I had declined along with all other insurance when I picked up the rental. I was told that I could start a dispute and I would have an answer within 42-78 (2-3 days) hours and should see the refund in that time to my account.

It has been 5 days and I haven't heard from anyone so to add to the inconvenience of this entire ordeal I had to call and cancel my credit card and request a new one and start a dispute with them. This entire ordeal has been an ABSOLUTE nightmare and I wouldn't wish this upon even my worst enemy. I will NEVER recommend or use Payless Car Rental ever again.

I filled out the customer satisfaction survey that they sent me and the response at the end of the survey is completely laughable because based on all of the reviews that I have read, dating back up to 4 years ago, they don't do anything to make improvements to the company. Here is the response at the end of the survey: "Thank you, your survey has been submitted. We appreciate your participation and feedback. Let me start by saying my original trip was a round trip flight LGA-DEN for a week. About 2 weeks or so prior to the date of the trip we had an event come up in Dallas so we decided to go there at the end of the trip. Flights were at this point very expensive. Renting a car was a no brainer based on price and the fact that we had bags to check.

We had no flight into Denver so we get to the airport terminal and proceed to the rental car bus pick up section where we were instructed via email to “Call for pick up from the direct line phone at the rental counter in the terminal, then proceed to island 4 for shuttle pick up.” Me along with several other people could not find such a phone anywhere (inside or outside)! The bus arrives by some miracle and we board with the driver less than thrilled with his job not saying a single word to anyone while carelessly tossing the bags onto the bus.

We get to the building without issue and proceed to the counter. I’m greeted by a female in a wrinkly untucked buttondown shirt. She asks me very directly “where are you going?”. I tell her Dallas and she says “why don’t you just fly there? You flew here!”. Does she not want my business? Why do I have to explain my reasoning for how I travel? Continuing throughout the conversation she was very short and quick like she would do anything to speed up the process. I was going to ask for 2 extra days with the vehicle to use in Dallas but I knew after just speaking to this employee for a few minutes I do not want to deal with this company any more than I have to. She tosses me the keys and says “Aisle 56. You’re all set”. No walk around the vehicle with me for damage or to ensure fuel level.

I get to my vehicle and do a walk around myself notating any damages with my camera. I get in the car and immediately notice it has not been cleaned at all on the inside. It had some sort of sauce on the driver door, by the radio, and on the passenger door. A previous rental agreement with someone’s personal information from Avis in the center console. A vape pen in the driver's door.

I arrive in a Dallas and drop off the car to the intake employees and proceed into the airport rental car building. Immediately upon entering I walk directly to the Enterprise counter and book a vehicle for 2 days in Dallas with an experience from the reception desk to the drive off immensely better than Payless. I can comfortably say I will NEVER use Payless Rental Car EVER again. Customer Service can be the most basic process and I promise I’m not looking to have my feet kissed by the employees but basic professionalism is expected. Spend a little more and go with a company more reputable. It’s worth it.

I was tired and didn't want to keep going back and forth so I took it. Then he told me I needed toll road protection. I needed to spend 12.00 a day and they would take care of the toll road fees. I told the counter person where I was staying and where I was going. He told me I would hit toll roads every day going back and forth to my event. I declined because it didn't sound right. The 4 days I spent in Austin I didn't hit one toll road! I felt the man was just trying to sell me anything! On top of all that the truck was dirty. I had to clean the inside of the windshield before I could drive. I will never rent from Payless, Budget or Avis again.

After a positive interaction with Payless Car Rental, Elisia increased their star rating on Nov. 7, 2019.

    Updated review: Nov. 7, 2019

I am happy to report that Payless Car Rental promised to refund my credit card for the disputed fuel charge. I followed the instructions provided by Payless to create an online ticket on their website regarding my complaint. I received an apologetic response within 24 hours. I am happy that my complaint has been resolved but consumers should be aware that Payless Car Rental charges the customers' credit card for a full tank of gas, stating the charge will be reversed once the car is returned with a full tank of gas. Upon return, they inspect the car and if the gas tank is full they note it on the return receipt. They do not automatically reverse the charges. They will NOT accept the rental return with the fuel reading marked "FULL" as proof. The customer has to provide a receipt to prove that they refueled the rental car.

    Original Review: Nov. 2, 2019

I was charged $70.67 for refueling even though I returned the rental car with a full tank of gas. Upon return, they inspect the car and if the gas tank is full they note it on the return receipt. According to the receipt Payless issued me, I used a half a gallon of gas traveling from the gas station where I refueled to the Payless rental office in Denver. According to the receipt, I was charged $70.67 for a half gallon of gas.

His response when we let him know we wanted to talk to his corporate team was "do it, I'll be here. I will be here tomorrow, I will be here in a week, when you visit in 3 months I will still be here". Apparently this is true though as you cannot get any responses from leaders in the company. Don't rent from Payless. After I paid my bill in full I noticed another $400 charge to my bank account from a different Payless location? One week later, after several calls with Payless employees acting bewildered and escalation to Payless Customer Support I received a note from a different branch manager of an office I did not rent from that my account was charged in error for someone else's rental agreement. Yup, $400 even, if you believe that. The manager wrote to me that I'd receive a refund in 30 business days! Since this was done with a card we all know they can simply reverse the charges so I think they are just hoping I go away.

The bigger problem here is 1) Be prepared to be scammed as Payless doesn't have a way to protect your credit card information. 2) If you believe they care, it doesn't matter because they don't have a process to correct mistakes in a timely manner (which means they don't care). $400 mistake or worse could cause you to have a horrible vacation or miss your mortgage payment. I'd hate to think they might have charged me $2,000 out of the blue. Give your card information to Payless at your own risk.

They scammed me. The website said I was paying 423 to rent the auto. Then I get a bill for twice that amount. I called their CSR immediately and he said that he would have it straightened out before my trip and I would only be charged 423. He said someone would call me back and I am now back from my trip and no one ever called. I will be filing a complaint with the state attorney general and with Amex.

Add to that, the car was damaged -- a warning alert kept going on, there is a bar hanging down from the front end of the car, and the AC did not work. I called another CSR and she told me to return the car to the airport. Do you know how far away that is? I kept the car instead of making that journey. Lastly, when I brought the car back to the airport I told the attendant that I needed a wheel chair to the gate. He called over the manager who told me to walk to the ticket counter and ask for a wheel chair. He said it was "just over there." Well, it was VERY far away and extremely difficult for me to walk with my backpack and service dog. I suffered greatly. They should refund my full amount for the rental given all of this shoddy service.

From start to finish, my experience with this company was horrendous. I had originally booked a full size car with Payless through Expedia. The total cost that was due via Expedia was $87. I opted to purchase $40 collision insurance through Expedia as well as rentals are not covered under my personal policy with Progressive. When I arrived at the rental pick up, I was pressured by the customer service agent multiple times to purchase additional insurance, upgrade the car, purchase prepaid gas, etc. The prepaid gas option was especially confusing as they charged $2 a gallon when the cost of gas off site was $1.81 at the time. The customer service agent laughed at me when I declined and assured me that their option was cheaper. I again declined. I signed the necessary paperwork and was handed the key.

The customer service agent told me to go out into the lot and hit the panic button and I would find it. I found the car easily enough (a mini van) and was on my way. I will say that the car was clean and ran well. I returned the car early on Monday with a full tank of gas as I was instructed. Later that day I noticed that my account had been charged much more than I had anticipated. $143.88 was withdrawn as opposed to the $87 I had expected. I tried to call Payless customer service/billing to no avail. You are not able to speak to someone about your questions or concerns.

The only avenue to have an issue addressed is to open a “ticket” on their website that someone may or may not respond to. I expressed my issues and awaited a reply. The reply stated that since I had already paid and the reservation was closed, they could offer me no refund. I stated this was unacceptable I explained that if any additional costs had been added, it had been against my will and without my permission. They responded by sending me a receipt of services that I had initiated. Indeed on the receipt, the customer service agent had added additional liability insurance of $16.25 per day that I had absolutely not accepted.

My mistake was trusting this agent and company to not charge me for something I had verbally denied. I will never use this company again and would not recommend it to anyone else. The customer service was callous and unhelpful. The staff was rude and condescending. I would assume that it would be more beneficial to go with a larger rental car company such as Enterprise or Hertz even if the rentals are at a slightly higher cost. After leaving the airport via Uber that cost $20. I called the corporate office and was informed that a bank statement pay stub or a current utility bill would suffice for supporting documents for a local residents are then return back to the airport to see why was I given misinformation. The response was, "Well we prefer utility statements." The website does not say prefer. The website says that supporting documents would be current utility bill pay stub or bank statement. After it has been acknowledged that a mistake has been made... now there are no cars available. I then wait for over 2 hours. Again I am inconvenience due to the poor customer service and poorly ran establishment. I speak with a supervisor and she doesn't offers or willing to make any concessions. I would I strongly advise any consumer not to deal with Payless Rental. They are very unprofessional and unethical.
