This was my first OAT trip. (I'm already booking more.) I was amazed at the level of detail that OAT attended to in order to make this an educational, eye-opening, experience. The trip size (16) was perfect. I am a solo female traveler and felt safe throughout the trip. From my pick up in Bangkok to my drop off in Saigon, I never felt alone, or felt like a fifth wheel. Our trip leader was nothing less than phenomenal at his job. He made sure our every need was met, that we learned about each country and their culture, and that we experienced things we could not have experienced on our own. I could go on for days and not convey all the things I loved about this trip. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

From small organic pineapple and coffee farms to zip lines and river rafting every day was a new adventure. Our team leader, Erick, was amazing guide to insight of the Costa Rican lifestyle and culture, couldn’t asked for anything more, our driver was outstanding, Allen thank you. We experienced wonderful resorts and excellent food and hospitality. Pura Vida.

With 2 troublesome travelers. The tour guide asked to send the travelers home. Against their terms and conditions, OAT did not allow the tour guide to suspend the troublesome travelers. This was a huge disappointment as the two travelers caused much annoyance to other travelers and were not fit to travel. It also took up much of the tour guide's time so he/she had less time to attend to other travelers. I will never book with OAT again.

This was my 3rd trip with OAT after using another tour company for a trip in 2023. The reason I came back to OAT is their focus on "learning and discovery" as well as interacting with residents of the cities/country visited. On my tour we had numerous personal interaction with families, craftspeople, couples, specialized guides from each city or site visited and spontaneous interactions during the day as we walked places. It is these personal interactions that I remember the most and help me feel "connected" to the new location I am learning about and experiencing. Once I realized that the personal connections are what make a tour more than a tour - I have aligned myself with OAT and have already booked a 2025 tour.

Morocco was fabulous and we toured different cities, the Sahara, rural areas and marketplaces. The scenery, food, interactions, accomodations and guide Mohammed were over the top. I also appreciated my tour guide's desire to understand what I like and he helped me find gardens and crafts (in my case) to visit during free time.

Do not feel that we were notified that many stores and restaurants would be closed during much of the trip due to the holidays and possibly being the low season for traveling in the area. Not have many other folks traveling was a plus and the local tour guides were all great and engaging.

I've traveled several times with OAT, and it's been ok. Unfortunately, this time, in Australia, in the midst of our trip, Cyclone Jasper struck as we were to head towards the Great Barrier Reef. It was clear that roads were closed between Cairns and Port Douglas, yet, instead of switching our itinerary to avoid that area and go later in the trip, OAT sent out coach directly into a hazardous area, with landslides that closed the road for flooding (we drove through the beginnings of this, going over floods and rocks in the road), and into a town which proceeded to run out of water (not just drinking water, but showers and toilets!) and food.

No one can control the weather, but OAT could have changed the itinerary so that 1. We weren't in this danger, and, 2. We could visit the GBR - which was the reason that many of us chose this trip to begin with. We have not had *one piece* of communication about this from OAT - this absolutely reprehensible and irresponsible behavior should *at least* Garner us an apology; better yet, a substantial refund.

Xin Chào!! Although at 82 I've traveled quite a bit this was my first OAT experience.. A friend who has done a few suggested we do a trip together and we chose the Inside Vietnam plus I wanted to also do the post trip to Cambodia.. Unfortunately she wasn’t able to go so I packed my stuff and off I went.. I got there a day early, met our TEL and a few others who had also arrived early.. They asked me to join them for our free day and that was the beginning of a most awesome and amazing adventure!! Our TEL AnLi was kind, caring and he was a wealth of knowledge.. He was there for our every want or need. And when we did have free time he was right there with great suggestions, for an activity or taking us to his favorite spots for dinner!!! Awesome!!

We did have a pretty cohesive group, everyone was friendly so that also contributed to making this trip so great .. Every day was a new adventure and we certainly took advantage of it all!! I thoroughly enjoyed every single day being introduced to the country the people the food and the customs.. I can also say the same for Mike in Siem Reap in Cambodia.. He helped us navigate the use of Tuktuks and find our way around when we had free time!! He also made my experience there memorable with his knowledge!! Amazing experience!! We were a group of 7 from the Vietnam part of the trip .. As long as I was going that far I was thrilled to be able to go to Cambodia to see the ancient Temples and walk among them … and yes my breath was taken away .. and yes I did go to the top of Angkor Wat.. our TEL didn’t think I could do it!! He applauded me!!

As you can see I had the most phenomenal adventure ever!! I have new wonderful friends and memories to last forever!! I’d do this one all over again!! And letting OAT make all my arrangements made my trip a breeze!! How nice to arrive at an airport in another part of the world and see that OAT is waiting for Me!! Kudos to OAT and everyone who made this trip so memorable!!

Just came back from this amazing trip with OAT. Our guide in Quito and Amazon was exceptional. Having grown in Amazon, Delfin has a vast knowledge of the flora and fauna of Amazon, rivers and also the Amazon way of life in general. Home-hosted lunch in the forest and a visit to the one room school were true highlights of the Amazon part of the trip.

The enchanting Galápagos Islands are full of charming wildlife and so much opportunity to learn. OAT allowed for different activities in Galapagos portion with snorkeling, kayaking and nature walks on different islands. Above all the Dinghy rides near the cliffs were the best with close encounters with the birds, sea lions, penguins etc.

If you want a unique experience to enjoy part of Eastern Europe, this winter trip is for you. Select the “Christmas cruise” in December, when we left our perfectly located Hotel Dubrovnik in the heart of Zagreb (after the OAT introductory briefing) to roam the city streets. My husband and I enjoyed mulled wine and sausages at one of the many booths and strolled the downtown squares lit brightly for the holidays. Everywhere you visit, cities will be decorated: Christmas trees overlooking waterways, in front of cathedrals, at public buildings and teddy bear Santa’s in windows.

Plus, there are excellent tour guides in each port to introduce you to the rich and complex history of the area. (It was interesting to learn that Dalmatia was once part of the Venetian empire.) Just when we thought our OAT trip leaders couldn’t get any better, along came Djukan, an informed and energetic native of Montenegro (with a high EQ), who blended the 25 on our tour into a “family.” We knew each other’s names within 48 hours. Dovidenja, name tags.

The good ship Athena has well-appointed staterooms, a comfortable lounge area, smooth sailing, and food aplenty. (One complaint: Get a better coffee machine; we Americans are such coffee snobs.) Best of all, it was staffed with people from various countries who genuinely seemed to care about their passengers – and all had interesting stories of their own. Me thinks people do not go on cruises for the food: it was good, not extraordinary, and it was served efficiently and with panache. Wine selections come from in country and vary daily – or you can buy your own offshore or aboard and pay a corkage fee. What a comfortable way to journey through Croatia, its islands and into Montenegro. I particularly enjoyed the mornings watching the sun rise as we sailed into a new port.

Our magical moments: returning from the welcome dinner through the bomb shelters from World War II, now used as sites for raves … Our Lady of the Rocks Shrine in Kotor, enjoying the art without another soul there … the stunning Cathedral of St. James in Sebenik, its architecture transitioning from Gothic to Renaissance (and just when we thought we’d seen enough churches/mosques/synagogues to last a lifetime) … the acapella singing troupe who had us all clapping to Croatian tunes and ended up singing Willie’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” … hearing the profound tale of a woman who lived through the siege of Dubrovnik … and inspiration from a young Muslim woman in Sopot, determined to rejuvenate her village and build a better life for her Catholic family.

It was the full-on OAT experience. Yes, you can go with the crowds in the summer or shoulder seasons, or you can button up your overcoat and go in winter when you will have this special place in the world to yourselves. There’s enough mulled wine and OAT hospitality to keep you warm.

I have traveled alone and planned every trip myself until now. Having decided to let OAT plan my trip, I am forever grateful! Morocco was a place I have wanted to visit for a long time and it did not disappoint! A beautiful country and every city we went to had its own charm and personality. We had a day with locals where I truly enjoyed the family, their meal and without speaking Arabic I was able to communicate well with Hadika, the wife. We visited medinas, millenary irrigation systems, museums, mosques, palaces, kasbahs, a spectacular farm, stayed in great hotels and met wonderful people.

We had two excellent guides because our first one Yassine had a family emergency, five days into the trip. To take his place came Lahcen who kept us on time, taught us history, tradition, beliefs and told us jokes. He was a wonderful person and anyone would be lucky to have him as a guide. Oh we even went to a Roman Ruin on an optional tour and being a sucker for those, I was in seventh heaven! OAT, I shall return!

My husband and I recently returned from the Backroads of Iberia: Paradores and Pousadas OAT tour. We found both Portugal and Spain to be beautiful, but our Trip Experience Leader, Joel, needs some retraining. The first night, I asked to speak privately with him after we got off the bus. Joel invited two other guests to our conversation. I told Joel I was not a fast walker, and I would refrain from going on optional walks so that I would not hold back the group. The others he had asked to join our "private" conversation were also slow walkers. Joel agreed to my statement that I would refrain from optional walks. I held true to my word and stayed in my room when I would have liked to see the places we visited.

Near the end of our trip, I asked him if I could make suggestions for future tours. For example, the OAT booklet said there would be "several steps." That turned out to be untrue. The convent where we stayed didn't have an elevator. The staircase leading from the lobby up to our rooms had a single wide banister made of curved marble. The restaurant was on a level lower than the lobby, so I was constantly going up and down flights of steps. Had I known about all the stairs, I would have chosen a different trip. The convent hallways were dark, and a member of the group fell off the additional steps leading to her room. Her head hit the opposing wall.

When I pointed out to Joel that the booklet states "several steps," and this was not the case, he turned to me and said, "Well, you don't know how close I came to sending you home on the first night." In other words, he did not take constructive criticism well. Furthermore, if he had sent home all three of us slower walkers, our two spouses would have left, too. That would be five persons leaving out of a group of fifteeen being sent home.

Joel went on to tell me that others were complaining about my slow walking. Up until that point, I had felt that I had made friends and was a part of the group. Joel's words ended that. My husband and I sometimes sleep in separate rooms. When a fellow guest congratulated us on our anniversary, Joel turned to me and said, "Then why don't you sleep together?" Joel's remark was rude and totally uncalled for. If Joel leads another OAT tour, I hope someone will retrain him.

He constantly stayed with us, answering all our questions, and showed us many interesting sites. We visited several archaeological sites, including two days at Machu Picchu, which was invaluable. Take your time to see this sacred and ancient land. We visited locals and participated in a "Day in the Life" of the Peruvian people. We visited a farmer and a school to talk to the student. That said, the itinerary was well structured and offered many opportunities to interact with a range of Moroccans. We are traveling with OAT for 15+ years. About 8 trips is the total. Few weeks ago, we returned from OAT trip to Vietnam, S. Korea and Japan. As usual, local and professional guides, organized contacts with the locals, including visiting their homes, and no unpleasant surprises during the trip. The group size was 15 people, which is a typical size of an OAT traveling group.

The air itinerary was arranged by OAT as well. Except a one long, 5 hours, layover in Seoul, no complaint. Guidance to the trip that included expected weather, needed clothing, traveling documents, some history, a short vocabulary dictionary, etc. was provided by the company. We are planning our next trip with OAT, coming in the spring, to Italy. We recommend the company, but still advise to monitor the state of preparation of your trip yourself as well.

About trip insurance. Examine your policy carefully, know what is covered and at what conditions. Document all instances of your trip interruption/delays. The insurance companies succeed rejecting your claims when there isn't a such documentation. Don't blame OAT for poor policy, you are free to buy a policy independently. One thing to remember, based on my recent experience. Your premium won't be refunded, if your trip cost was reduced due to cancellation of some part of your planned trip. However, they happily will accept your increased premium, if the trip by some reason became more expensive.

    Original Review: Dec. 8, 2023

The trips I've had have been led by good trip leaders but in the last year multiple mistakes have been made by office staff. The final one was being told our trip was paid in full then two months later receiving a bill for "customized air", a cost that wasn't mentioned to us when we bought the trip. This looks like Bait and Switch, not a legal practice in our state, Multiple mistakes were made in booking the trip we took in November: We were booked on the wrong date after specifying that we wanted to be in the same group as our friends.

Our friends had their trip cancelled without their knowledge (OAT did rectify this mistake). We received an air itinerary that showed we had no checked baggage allowance for our final flight. When I called to ask about it the first person I talked to said "I know how you feel, but here's why". Called another time and got another rep who took care of the problem. Of course each call required 45 minutes on hold. Before I could talk to anyone I was put on hold, after over 1 1/2 hours I tried calling using another line and got the message they were closed for the day.

3 days before we were to leave for our last trip we received a call from the car service that was to pick us up saying the flight we were to arrive on had been cancelled and asking what flight we would be on. Turned out someone had put in the wrong flight number. Problem was solved but very stressful until it was. It's disappointing to see a company we liked doing business with in the past doing such a poor job.

My wife and I recently returned from our 3rd OAT trip, this one to Sicily in October/November, 2023. Like our previous trips with OAT, this trip was fabulous. Unlike our previous trips, Sicily was by far and away the most extraordinary trip we've taken. From arranging the air component to the small things like checking in with us at each new hotel to make sure everything was to our liking, the investment in assuring our comfort and happiness was evident to all. Our guide in Sicily, Martina, had such an in-depth knowledge both of the island and of her constituents on the trip that it seemed like she was personally guiding us to everything that we specifically wanted to see, hear, and do.

It was a small group (just 11 of us), and every day was something new and different, and sometimes even totally unexpected - even though the itinerary was there for all to see. Examples include discovering the Dancing Satyr, and then meeting with the captain of the ship who recovered her from the ocean floor. Or hiking Mt Etna with a professional vulcanologist - the same day she erupted (admittedly, OAT had little to do with that one). Everything we saw, did, and experienced were indicative of what we believe is OAT's emphasis on a quality adventure that explores a place in a more in-depth manner, while keeping an eye on assuring the comfort and happiness of its constituents. We are already planning our next trip with them.

OAT is one of the less expensive tour companies. The big draw to me is getting a room by myself for no extra cost. I have been traveling for over 45 years. It is difficult to do today. Too many people everywhere. The vast percentage of people today I consider "tourists." I find the people on OAT are ones that have just begun traveling in the 21st century. So many come with no prior study of the area. ** tourists have become so fat and sloppy. The constant picture taking w/ their smart phones drives me crazy. Pictures of their food, olive oil bottles, the most minor of things. I do not enjoy the group meals. Set plate of pretty inexpensive food. Heavy on the carbs and sugar. But you get what you pay for!!!

The ** public has also gotten much less friendly and/or even pleasant. I set my expectations low when on OAT. They went down market back in the 90's when Grand Circle Travel bought them. One also has to be careful when using their travel dept. I worked for the airlines for over 30 years. But airline travel today is a shadow of its former self. Trans-Atlantic flights included. But that is a whole story in itself! "Travel" just ain't what it used to be!!! So, for what I received, I did not pay very much money.

My friend and I took the tour Crossroads of the Adriatic in September 2023. The tour itself was overall satisfactory. However, our experience with OAT's handling of our airline reservations was totally unprofessional and unacceptable, and we would have cancelled the tour had that been a choice. We made our reservations on January 13, 2023. We were told that OAT would arrange four flights involving two airlines going to Paris, then Croatia, and returning the same way. Subsequent emails from OAT confirmed that itinerary, as well as their "My Planner" online site for their customers.

Almost three months later on March 28, I checked My Planner to see that the flight from Paris to Croatia was missing. We called OAT to be told that everything was fine, until I finally made them realize the problem. We were then told that our original itinerary was not possible because OAT didn't have "a partnership" with one of the airlines involved. OAT refused to grant a refund, and we had to accept six connecting flights and three airlines going and returning, something to which we never would have initially agreed. We were also told that because fares had increased between January and March, we might have to pay more money.

OAT did, at least, issue an exemption from the additional amount about two weeks later. However, we were disgusted by their attitude and the fact that at no time between January 13 and March 28 did OAT attempt to notify us of the airline situation. Instead, we had to be the one to discover the problem and notify them, which at first the OAT rep denied and insisted our reservations were fine.

The day before the departing flight I checked OAT's site, My Planner, to see that my friend's itinerary was missing the departing flight. I called the airline and then OAT. Finally, the problem was resolved and the flight was restored on her itinerary. OAT blamed the airline; the airline blamed OAT. Early next day, our departure date, my friend called the airline to confirm both our flights that day, only to be told that neither of us had reservations because the flight had been cancelled. She then called OAT to handle the situation: No flight had been cancelled, and our flights were finally restored. Supposedly, there was a "glitch in the software" of the airline. However, we lost the aisle seats that we had each paid $39 for that particular flight. OAT claimed that since they didn't handle seating, it was between us and the airline. Again, the fact that OAT had made the reservations with that particular airline made no difference to OAT; we were on our own.

When we arrived that evening for our flight, the airline would not accommodate us (even though we showed proof of payment as their rep had directed during our earlier phone call). Only after our insistence were we directed to another counter where we were given aisle seats in the last section and not as preferable as what we had paid for. I had to laugh when the OAT rep told us earlier that she would make a notation in our record that we would not fly again with that particular airline ... so what about others? We were never told that OAT would take steps to prevent this in the future.

My one previous experience with OAT involved my requesting aisle seats in both international and domestic flights in Asia. I was told OAT would definitely consider my request and that seat preferences would be "rotated." They were never rotated, and I was assigned window seats not only on the airline flights but the train rides as well. When I complained to OAT, I was told there was nothing that could be done.

Having undergone these experiences with OAT, it is my opinion that OAT does not take seriously the transportation itineraries it arranges. And while I accept that the customer has a responsibility to confirm flights, etc., I cannot accept a travel company that overlooks major changes or issues in air flights. OAT seems to make no attempts to recheck such itineraries or alert customers when major changes are issued. This is disappointing and unacceptable from what I once believed to be a professional and well-respected travel company.

I just returned from an Overseas Adventure Tour trip to Scotland. I loved how this company incorporated a wide variety of Scottish citizens in "A day in a life of...". Crofters, Harris Tweed weavers, highland cattle breeders, Isle of Mull cheese farmers, sheepherding, guga hunters, straw weavers, having tea in a Gaelic speaking café in Stornoway, home-hosted dinner with a local family, Soul Food Sisters - a community run café, tours in Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh. I really enjoyed a debate on the controversial topic of Scottish independence, an education of both sides of the debate.

Along with the geological formation of this magnificent country with the human history going back thousands of years, really gives one a true understanding and appreciation of how strong, kind, and intelligent the Scottish people are. Touching the walls of the Broches, castles, and Viking ruins, one can only imagine how life was like for those humans that lived in them during their time there. Driving through Glencoe and the Cairngorms National Park were absolutely beautiful.

OAT created this tour to give a well rounded view of the country of Scotland and the Scottish people. I loved it and would highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to be submerged in all aspects that affected the development of present day Scotland. The foods was very good, plenty of veggies! The pace of this trip was appropriate.

Our first trip with OAT. We reserved a room on the main deck of the small ship Artemis. When we arrived, the only room available for us was in the bow, small and dark with two little portholes. The larger room like we expected was given to a single woman from the “other” group which was over the so called small group size. A late cancellation opened up this room and the other person was chosen and we were moved to tiny quarters. OAT appears to treat returning customers with much more consideration than new ones. The over large other group also dominated the lounge space and did not meld with others. Our guide, the staff, all were excellent, but I won’t trust this company again.

This itinerary provided a closer look at areas of Italy off the beaten tourist path. We visited unique historical places I’d never heard of previously but shall now never forget. The locals were friendly and outgoing; we sampled culinary delights along the way. Program Director Annunziata ** was extraordinary, sharing a passion for her country, wealth of knowledge about the area, and touching personal experiences about growing up and living there. After eating in restaurants, she told us how she prepared menu items--appetizers, entrées, and desserts--in her own kitchen. She was a master in handling our group, providing alternative plans as necessary, and always had an upbeat, positive attitude. I highly recommend this trip for anyone who wants an amazing adventure seeing Italian highlights other than the traditional ones in Rome, Florence, Venice, and Milan.

This was my 12th trip with OAT and while I have enjoyed each, this trip was really spectacular in the sights, the meals and the experiences. I have visited Paris often but never seen any other part of France. On this trip I visited several chateau and even slept in one! Played Boule de Fort, a game somewhat similar to bocce, walked through a traboule (a secret passage in Lyon used in the Middle Ages and again in WWII by Resistance fighters), mixed a blend of wines to create my own "red" at a vineyard, and visited the Lascaux Caves.

I loved the visit to the walled city of Carcasonne and the UNESCO World Heritage sites at Rocamadour and Albi. We had opportunities to sample cheeses and foie gras and pates and even pastries. Most importantly we had the opportunity to learn about the towns and cities we visited and we walked around and through them each day. We were encouraged to interact with people in the shops and markets (and in my case in the laundry) and we did ! Each day was full of activity and adventure and one or two great meals. I am so glad I had the opportunity to go and recommend it without reservation.

I had never thought of visiting Vietnam and Cambodia, but nudges from a friend who had recently been to Africa with Overseas Adventure Travel persuaded me to go. I'm glad I did, because of things I learned, people I met, and memories I have. There were 12 of us on the Vietnam trip, and all in all, we got along well, and more than a few of us got closer as we spent more time together.

I have not done much group traveling, but I'm glad to have done this trip in this fashion, because our OAT guides facilitated so much. Our Vietnam guide, Tran ** or "Yo," worked very hard, and was able to substitute a terrific experience when bad weather cancelled one of our planned stops. When five of us went on to Cambodia, our guide Jack did good work for us and, like Yo, shared a lot of knowledge that enriched our time. In both countries, I liked having time to wander. In Vietnam, I think I would have liked one less stop somewhere along our North-South journey just to cut down on the amount of in-country travel that we did. Again, this was a very enriching and stimulating trip. Food and lodging were fine, the variety of experiences was fine as well, and part of me wishes I could go out the door and have some of those experiences again.

I have recently returned from my first OAT trip. OAT was recommended to me by friends but I was a bit apprehensive about traveling solo with a group of people I had not met before. I was pleasantly surprised. The group was comprised of both couples and singles. We all meshed very well and did activities together outside of our scheduled events. I have traveled quite a bit but never with an organized tour group. There is no way I could have had as many and as varied of experiences in Sicily if I had planned the trip myself.

The Sicilians I met were all quite interesting. We ate in homes of a retired law enforcement officer and his family, an active farmer and his family and a cook and craftsperson. We were invited to the home of an accomplished pianist in Ragusa who played for us in his parlor and showed us his extensive antique collection. In Mazura, after visiting the museum and seeing the magnificent Dancing Satyr, we listened to the captain who discovered the sculpture talk of his discovery adventure.

We hiked on the hills close to Mt. Etna and listed to its thunder on a day before it erupted. In Taormina we viewed the majestic views of the Ionian seaside from the Greco Roman Theater, while we learned of the Greeks' use of the theater for cultural enrichment and the Romans later use of the theater for gladiator games. Throughout Sicily, we had a chance to learn of the merging of various cultures and that influence on the lives of Sicilians today. We viewed architecture that was originally Greek, converted by the Romans and later formed the base for magnificent cathedrals.

One of the most surprising tours of the trip was a visit to the WWII museum. I would not have placed that on a trip I had planned for myself. I was exposed to a phase of WWII history that I had not been aware of and one that has much similarity to what is happening in our world today. These are just a few of the experiences I had on my trip. There were so many more that greatly enriched my life. Our trip leader, Ignazio, was excellent. He set a high bar for future trips. I definitely plan to travel with OAT again and hope that future trip leaders are as great as Ignazio was.

There were so many missed opportunities for cultural interaction. We did our best to do extra activities. According to experienced OAT travelers, this trip was much less educational than others and most were disappointed. Also the Great Barrier Reef experience was not as described in the brochure. We were on a boat with 170 people which made snorkeling a cattle car type experience. Our tour leader had to wrangle the marine biologist to talk to us for about 15 mts as a special favor. Also half the hotel rooms were very small if going as a couple. Good things about the trip was the itinerary which included going to the interior of Australia and the great group of fellow travellers.

It is now 39 days since the war started and 23 days since they agreed to the refund and we still don't have the refund. To me this seems a deliberate way for OAT to draw interest on our money. We didn't know what to expect since this was our first experience with O.A.T. Generally, we organize our trips ourselves. We could not have organized this one to experience the broad range of places, people, and events. Our Trip Leader and Local Guides were very knowledgeable. The range of activities gave us an appreciation for the kind hearts and hard work of the people of these countries, and their peaceful demeanors! We visited ancient sites, always with knowledgeable guides to share the history and significance of each place. The guides gave us plenty of time to explore on our own and were always willing to organize our free time if a critical mass of the group was interested in participating.

Meals were (too?) ample. Guides bent over backwards to accommodate allergies. When some of us caught colds, they helped us find care and pharmacies. We learned much more about the countries, histories, people, and economic and political structures of these countries through our guides and the people we met than we could have on our own. We highly recommend this trip and are looking forward to traveling with O.A.T. in the future!

We also had free time built in so we could explore or decompress on our own....It was a perfect blend...It was rainy and chilly BUT that did not flavor anyone's experience...we went prepared with layers and were perfectly fine..It was actually quite beautiful travelling thru the Highlands with mist and wind...Celebrate the weather and marvel at there IS a reason Scotland is so beautifully green....A first class trip with a first class company. My wife and I booked a trip with OAT in March 2023 and traveled to northern Spain & Portugal for 16 days in October 2023. The Team leader, Ricardo, was OUTSTANDING. He had everything ready on a daily basis. His knowledge, travel experience, English, punctuality, hotels, meals, transportation was flawless. The trip had a total of 15 guests, who all shared the same feelings.

We went on daily, enlightening adventures, traveling on a comfortable bus. When in cities, Ricardo hired a local guide for 60- 90 minutes "deep dive" into the local community. We took adventures every day. Some of them included a tour of a local farm, which catered to the disabled or autistic children. Other days, we met and learned about beekeeping and honey, met with an archeologist to discuss the history uncovered beneath these grounds. We toured the massive Guggenheim Museum and learned of the clamming operation in a tiny fishing village.

We traveled parts the French path of the pilgrims to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and learned the history and tradition "Running of the Bulls in Pamplona" from a long-time participant. Ernest Hemingway was prominent throughout this day. We then traveled through parts of Portugal, to include the Douro Valley and Porto. The river cruise, wine tasting, home hosted lunch exceeded our expectations. This was a wonderful trip at reasonable costs. All flights and travel arrangement were flawless. I would highly recommend OAT adventures and travel trips.

Even though I read reviews, I rarely write them…. I am a 70 year old female who traveled to Peru without my husband in the OAT Affordable Peru travel group in October 2023. This was my 1st experience with a travel group. Prior to traveling with Manuel, our travel guide from OAT, I didn’t have a positive opinion of travel groups. But my opinion changed dramatically. Before even leaving home Manuel contacted me and the rest of our travel group, providing helpful additional information on our future 11 day trip to Peru. When I asked, he arranged for someone to pick me up from the airport and transport me to the hotel because I booked my airfare on my own and not through OAT. He provided an element of safety, ease and comfort right from the start.

I love to travel and when I do I want to understand and be submerged into the culture I am visiting. Manuel intended for us to feel the true Peruvian culture as we visited a local market, cooked and enjoyed a meal with a host Peruvian family, witnessed a shaman explain his rituals, listened to a discussion on coca leaves...and so much more that are too numerous to mention. Manuel was an extraordinary travel guide as we experienced his love of country and culture.

At my age I was somewhat doubtful about my ability to navigate Machu Picchu or river rafting on the Urubamba. I think Manuel’s focus on healthy pacing made it all possible for me. I am appreciative of the expansive amount of information about the historical sites we were visiting as well as Peru’s political atmosphere through the centuries. When the unexpected happened he could be depended upon to handle any situation behind the scenes in a quick and professional manner. I cannot say enough about our travel guide, Manuel. He had the ability to make or break the experience and he exceeded expectation. He was exceptional. My trip to Peru with OAT was an incredible experience that will never be forgotten.

It grieves me to see so many negative OAT reviews recorded in ConsumerAffairs. My wife and I have now completed four OAT trips, having recently returned from the Ultimate Africa tour. After reading many reviews, it appears that most complaints are regarding reservations and what happens or doesn’t happen administratively with the OAT organization. There are many dissatisfied customers who feel they have not been treated fairly or honestly by OAT, most often regarding health issues and decisions or schedule changes. In their defense, there is a lot of paperwork to sift through and I would encourage potential travelers to carefully review and ask questions to throughly understand what is being agreed to. By comparison, there are very few complaints regarding the actual trips and trip leaders.

We have had the most wonderful experience during all four of our OAT trips and we believe that the organization does an outstanding job. The whole travel industry was hurting during Covid and is still recovering from a very difficult time. Hopefully, OAT will continue to focus more on staffing and the administrative aspects of customer service, aka phone calls, and a little lesser budget on printed advertisements, brochures and costly literature that is frequently mailed out. The #1 priority and goal should be to have quality customer service.

In regards to our most recent trip, Ultimate Africa, we couldn’t be more pleased with the entire experience from booking to traveling with OAT. This was a well designed and carried out program, and it would be hard to imagine another company doing any better than OAT, especially for the value. Our guide was totally there for everyone during the whole experience. She displayed the ultimate in concern for our safety, well being and travel experience. She was a true African native, well studied in history, culture, daily life, and many other topics. She was the catalyst that made this trip experience so meaningful.

If I was to do a complete review of the entire trip, it would take pages. What we saw, experienced and learned about Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa in just 16-days was incredible. OAT is fortunate to have our tour guide as a contractor and she should definitely be used as much as possible for this fantastic tour. She is the Ultimate OAT professional guide and a great person of high integrity and personality. My wife and I highly recommend the Ultimate Africa tour. I also don’t want to fail to mention another wonderful OAT tour that we completed this year, the Egypt & The Eternal Nile adventure. This was also an amazing tour that we highly recommend. We are already looking forward to our next OAT adventure.

I have traveled in the past with OAT with a companion. On all of the trips I was very pleased with the company, services, employees, itineraries. I am now traveling solo. Since my past experiences with this company were positive, I decided to see what they had to offer for a solo traveler. They have several itineraries that are geared to solo travelers and they do no charge single supplements on most itineraries.

Additionally, I had my own room—I do not want an assigned room mate. On my most recent travels to Sicily as a first-time solo traveler, I was impressed and pleased with the company. The tour director, the local guides, the food, the accommodations, the itinerary were outstanding. My fellow travelers were warm and welcoming. I needed to change an itinerary due to scheduling conflicts and they changed my itinerary and dates without penalty. My original itinerary was more expensive and they refunded the difference without any issues. Many of my fellow travelers had been on on multiple trips with OAT. They have a very loyal following, and you can add me to that list of frequent travelers with OAT.

I loved traveling with OAT in Rwanda. Our tour leader, Ismail, was amazing -- knowledgeable, well-organized, funny, thoughtful, a problem solver, and patient. The small group made it easy to get to know each other and enjoy the experience together. Although I chose the trip primarily to see gorillas, it was learning about Rwanda that had the greatest impact. The country and people are amazing. Their reconciliation since the '94 genocide is phenomenal. OAT's immersive experience and "difficult conversations" allowed us to really understand how they accomplished their remarkable transformation into a beautiful, functional, progressive and unified country.

The trip had just the right amount of activity without being exhausting or overwhelming and my fears about climbing up the mountain to see the gorillas were unfounded. Our guides chose a route and moved at a pace that accommodated all of us. The pre-trip instructions ensured I had everything I needed for a successful and enjoyable adventure. I'm ready to book my next trip with them.

I have traveled with OAT now 3 times. Each time I have gone as a single with no supplement to pay. The Trip Leaders have ALL been excellent. Every one of them wanted the travelers to learn as much about his/her country as possible. We had the opportunity to spend time with local families for a day or two in what they call "A Day in the Life". We work with them to carry out daily tasks as well as meal preparation. We have the opportunity to learn a lot about the local culture, history, language and cuisine.

We visit sites to learn about the ancient or recent history, struggles for independence, we always hear from someone about a local controversial topic (which has been incredibly informative and interesting). We are encouraged to participate in local activities, like going to a hammam, shopping in the medina or casbah, talking to people in the markets, etc. Museum visits are carefully selected to expand on other information that we have learned. For each trip it has been most rewarding experience. The Trip Leaders encourage bonding amongst the group and it always happens. I have enjoyed everyone on every trip and I have another one coming up soon.

My wife and I took both the main trip, Back Roads of Iberia: Spanish Paradores & Portuguese Pousadas, and the post-trip, Northern Spain: Bilbao, San Sebastian & Medieval Villages. This combination provided us with a terrific overview of the culture, history and lifestyles of the people of Spain and Portugal. It covered a small portion of Portugal, southern Spain and northern Spain. Much of our lodging was in Spanish Paradores and Portuguese Pousadas; these facilities were former sites such as monasteries or castles that each country converted to lodging; each was beautiful and comfortable.

Our daily activities included many walking/bus tours of the cities we were visiting that provided terrific visuals and the history of these sites. And we enjoyed insights into the day-to-day lifestyles and living of the people of these two countries through the Home Dinner and the visits to the olive business and bull farm. Our tour guide was terrific and worked hard to make our trip a huge success. And we enjoyed our "small group" of 16 travelers.

Unfortunately this is the place where those that have unfortunate experiences come and the many happy travelers don't make the effort. I just returned from a 19 day tour "JAPAN's Cultural Treasures" (Tour + pre tour extension), my first OAT tour. I feel that OAT knows their targeted market very well. The activity level and daily walking amount were accurate. The free time seemed like a lot but was just right for resting or additional activity. I noticed a very subtle change in food about 2/3 through. It went from full on Japanese to adding more western type food and food that needed a fork!

The tour leader was very organized, giving a daily agenda the evening before with times and what we would be doing. She was able to "herd" us in a very gentle way. Besides all the beautiful places we visited, we got to understand Japanese life and the everyday people. We traveled as the Japanese do, mostly by train and subway which is also the most efficient way. I was very impressed and will definitely travel with O.A.T. next time.

Why would there be so many repeats if this were not the best company? I had a great adventure on and around the Nile! I have now been on 8 trips, 6 of which were wonderful. The Amazon portion of my recent trip was really awful. Though I had been on more trips in anyone else, except for two couples, I was given a cabin which attracted all the sun and was about 103. The guy did not provide water on for our trips in the middle of the Amazon, and did not point to bathrooms or water telling me that I could go to the bathroom in the woods. He did not treat me as a trusted traveler as the six other guys in other countries did. I’ve been trying to contact them for over three weeks now and they do not respond to my emails or phone calls. They have not hired enough people to answer the phone. I heard from a friend who will not travel with them again that they have gone conglomerate and are no longer a family owned business.

It’s such a shame are used to tell everyone how wonderful the travel agency was, if they don’t correct themselves they’re going to be losing a lot of money. There was a complaint in the villages where I live which has 160,000 older people about them and randomly I ran into a friend who said she’ll never travel with them again. My experience was horrific in that we went to 9000 feet three times, the program started after at 2 AM arrival at 9 AM the next morning which is unacceptable. I will look into filing a more formal complaint since they will not return my calls or my emails. I also averted heat stroke myself twice in The Amazon, because the guide was it not providing water for us during a four hour period of heat.

Actually, we haven't left for our trip yet. We are scheduled to leave in mid October and decided to arrive early and spend the nights of 10/13- 15 at the hotel in Lisbon where the tour will start. My mistake was booking and paying for this early arrival before the tour starts thru OAT. The friend I am traveling with wants to take me on a special trip to Porto for the nights of 10/14 (my birthday) and 10/15. So I called OAT to cancel the early on our own pre tour starting nights of 10/14 and 10/15. No can do.

If I had booked directly with the hotel I could have. So so greedy, OAT. Now for one night (1 night) it will cost me nearly $1,000.00, the full price of all 3 nights.. For one night. Checking in at 3pm on 10/13 and leaving the hotel at 10:00 am the next morning. Cost for 1 night/19 hours will be close to $1,000.00. So be aware, friends, that changes, even a month in advance, to early arrival on your own will cost you the full price with no refunds if you book thru OAT. Book on your own with the hotel. This is the hotel they booked me in for $450 a night that I now have to pay $1,000.00 for one night. Check out the prices if you book on your own. **

The rates run between $100 - $200 per night.

I have learned my lesson! These companies may have been good pre pandemic. Now they are just trying to make up for lost profits by these sorts of business practices. I have traveled extensively on my own (48 countries) but thought that traveling with a small group would be easier now. After this trip, however, I am back to traveling on my own. I would never have to spend $1,000.00 for one night/19 hours on a hotel if I was traveling on my own.

Avoid this company at all cost!!!! We booked a 15 day Tuscany & Umbria Italy tour in October 2022 for a party of 4 (2 couples). One month before we were to leave I received our document packet confirmation with a list of fellow travelers and realized the couple we were traveling with were not on the list. We called immediately and the agent on the phone assured us that we were all on the same trip. Not feeling completely assured, we called back a few hours later and were told that we were NOT on the same tour, they had overbooked and the couple we were traveling with, were put on a tour leaving the day after ours, in other words we were not traveling together. At first the agent said sorry, but there was nothing they could do and offered no recourse.

After making several calls and insisting on talking to a supervisor, all they could say was "there is nothing we can do at this point, it's too close to the departure date". After insisting that, that was not acceptable the supervisor said they would see if they could change some passengers. The supervisor left a message a few days later saying she was us able to, so we had one of two options. 1) refund or 2) Go on the tour and they would give us a $500 credit for a future trip. (Why in the world would they think we would ever want to use this company again!!!). Basically it was "Oh, so sorry our mistake, too bad nothing we can do."

When I tried to call the supervisor back, she was always unavailable. After calling 3 times and insisting on talking to ANY supervisor, one finally came on the line and told me the same thing and that there was nothing more that would be offered, and the supervisor was as high up as I could go to file a complaint. We had been planning this trip for a year and invested a great deal of time and money planning it. We have been greatly inconvenienced and disappointed by this turn of events and feel we should be compensated for the fact that our whole trip was ruined by their mismanagement.

I am very disappointed in the fact that OAT takes no responsibility for their error, they lied several times ensuring us that we were on the same tour, and then doing nothing to compensate for their overbooking. Their agents are poorly trained giving out misinformation at the expense of the customer and OAT again takes no responsibility! OAT is a disreputable, unethical company with no regard for its customers.

Picture it. US. 2023. A group of friends book an exciting, expensive, 17 day trip to Africa. With great anticipation they make arrangements to cover work shifts, take care of pets, shop, pack, buy medications, day dream and share with others the anticipation building for such a big adventure. Then. Less than a month before the trip is scheduled to depart, the travelers are informed that there has been a mistake and the trip is actually over-booked. So we can no longer go. To Africa. In 21 days as is still listed ("confirmed") on our OAT trip planner. To be fair, OAT has acknowledged their extreme error, but as of right now we have not been offered anything close to reasonable reparations.

This is not a long weekend in the Hamptons that got canceled. Through NO fault of our own. This is a huge trip that required a great deal of planning and organization for us which now, even if we can go another time, doesn't seem like our entire group will be available to go together. And so far the solutions we have been given are to go on a similar tour later this year or potentially go on the same trip around similar dates next year - but at a cost of over $2000 more. None of this is acceptable.

This issue has not been resolved and we are expecting more information soon, but I expect there to be recognition that we have been incredibly inconvenienced and disappointed by this turn of events and feel we should be compensated for more than simply the cost of the trip, especially if we can no longer go at all. I'm hopeful that OAT will recognize the extent to which this has thrown our entire summers into disappointed chaos and work to SHOW us that they are sorry, not simply say it over and over without any respectful actions to follow. I would love to be able to update this review with the generous and understanding response from OAT's "higher ups" to our situation. I guess time will tell.

Upon arriving at the hotel there was insufficient parking (cars were backed up onto a city street trying to get in). Maybe not the fault of OAT, blame the hotel. Parked down the street and walked to the hotel. Upon arriving at the meeting area there was a large crowd milling around and insufficient seating for many people. A number of people, including us, left because of the lack of seating and organization.

If OAT can't handle the logistics and planning for a simple meeting at a hotel (everyone who came had pre-registered and had to check in at the OAT meeting desk so OAT knew how many people to expect) I will not trust them to handle the planning and logistics of an African safari. As I write this, my husband and I are finishing up our 2nd of 5 days of being confined to our cabin after testing positive for covid along with several others onboard. Although I feel there are better ways to handle this, it is extreme to be expected to stay in our cabin when everyone is off the ship today and it is 80 degrees and we can’t even take our meals outside on the upper deck or have been offered the opportunity to go out with masks on for a walk around the deck! We were asked this morning to go into bathroom as steward said we couldn’t go into hall while room was disinfected with spray! It would have been nice if ship doctor had at least offered ** to anyone wanting it with a positive test.

This is our 5th trip and we don’t want it to be our last, but as travelers we all assume some risk and it is not right to not have some compensations made for the money we have paid and been loyal customers. When we had Italy trip canceled twice during Covid we never asked for a refund but just rebooked both times. We are only suffering minor head cold symptoms and tested ourselves when we were told there were two positives cases onboard. We called to let cruise director know who tested the us again with the ‘spit’ tests used on ships. The spit tests were negative and he said protocol had just been updated to use any passenger administered test results even though the ships showed us as negative!

We volunteered and paid for our own PCR tests at a clinic to make sure results were correct. We debated for some time whether we should even pack our own tests! If we would have had any idea how this would play out we wouldn’t have tested at all! Just feel keeping people Confined to cabins is overkill and not even allowing them to go outside to get air is not right without some compensation! Don’t know how the 3.5 hour bus ride will play out in a couple days when we transfer from ship to hotel in Lisbon!? Sure glad we get along as this cabin gets smaller every hour!

I had travel insurance yet it has taken 5 months to get reimbursed for both of our tickets. In the meantime, OAT has strung out the payment to its own convenience with no explanation. When pressed through countless phone calls and letters it has reacted defensively and has made no effort to mollify this long-term traveler who by any definition would be considered a loyal customer. Make that, used to be....

Updated on 04/23/2023: Mid-day 27 March we were notified by Allianz Global Assistance that our two travel protection claims had been approved for the refund amounts we requested. The Allianz rep verified the dollar amounts and said to contact OAT for the details of how and when we would receive the payment. We followed-up with OAT; the OAT rep we spoke with verified the settlement dollar amount and said we would receive a check through the mail within 30 days.

Three weeks later we received our settlement from OAT - a limited time voucher, not a refund check as we were told (?). At this point we will remind OAT that the cash refund option they originally offered and we accepted is what we want and expected. It is clearly in both our best interests. The cash refund will give us the flexibility to select the time and place of our next OAT adventure(s) and not constrain us within the limited time allowed by this voucher. At the same time this will be unequivocal proof that OAT honors their word and makes every effort to treat their loyal travelers fairly in every way - for OAT, a road to be ALWAYS traveled.

Original Review: Consumer Affairs Review of Overseas Adventure Travel. 18 March 2023. My wife and I weren't nearly as fortunate as Gail of Laguna Beach. In November 22 we booked on the same OAT Valletta to Barcelona trip Gail and her travel mate are on and hopefully enjoying right now. Similarly, when we were within several weeks of our 4 March 23 departure, we had not received the OAT visa packet which contained all the information and forms for us to submit to PVS International for the visas required for the two Algeria stopovers. We contacted OAT Travel and reported our situation, seeking answers and help.

After many days and many calls and many conversations with as many as nine different OAT travel reps, we still had no answers as to why OAT had neglected to send us the visa packet and how they would help us get the visas we couldn't travel without. During each of these conversations when we clearly needed to talk with a supervisor/decision-maker, we were told it would be 5 to 7 days before we should expect anyone to make contact with us.

In one conversation, an OAT travel rep said that 6 weeks was normally required for the visas' processing and return; yet, they made no offers at all to help us. That was it. Frustrated and disappointed, we went ahead and contacted PVS International directly. Their agent told us that some important information required for the Algeria visa applications - accommodations while in Algeria, an invitation letter, in-country point-of-contact - could only be provided by OAT, which OAT had not offered to us. The PVS agent also cautioned us that they had a backlog of Algeria visa requests awaiting approval and it was doubtful that ours could be approved and returned to us within the time remaining. Judging from Gale's success, having OAT's support, concern and interest could overcome these obstacles.

Twelve days before our scheduled departure and during one of our last calls, an OAT travel rep told us that "even with an expedited processing request, not enough time remained for us to get our Algeria visas from PVS International before our departure." At this point the only decision for us was to cancel our reservation and deal with the consequences. He told us we must now decide whether to accept an OAT voucher for future trip(s) or seek reimbursement of our cancellation fee through our Allianz Travel Protection Plan. Pressed for an immediate decision, we made it. OBTW. We still haven't received a call back from an OAT Travel supervisor or anyone else at OAT who might be interested in helping us negotiate through this unfortunate, but demonstrably resolvable, situation.

On the morning of 5 March, the day after the trip's departure, adding insult to further disappointment, we finally received the OAT visa packet for the Algeria visas with no explanation. Why then? Why not two weeks earlier so my wife and I could be sailing aboard the M/V Corinthian and we could thank Gail of Laguna Beach in person for leading the way for two positive outcomes to the same OAT-based problem.

In early November 2022 when we committed to this trip we bought the Allianz travel protection insurance policies and paid in full for the Base Adventure, Mediterranean Navigation, and Malta Pre-Trip Extension. We had made a considerable financial investment in this 25 day trip. It was to be our 19th trip with OAT/GCT.

From our vantage point at this time, we award OAT a one (being the lowest) star rating for (1) their dismal performance admitting their culpability in causing our Algeria visa problem and (2) the reprehensible way they have managed to totally relieve themselves from any responsibility for fixing the problem so we, too, could enjoy the Mediterranean Navigation cruise for which we paid.

March 6, 2023. I was scheduled for a trip to Sicily to leave March 9, 2023. I came down with Covid and verified by my physician. In consideration for those on the airplane, and the fellow travelers, I asked to postpone the trip to not get others sick. I was very disappointed that I caught Covid, but also not to visit one of the areas on my lifetime bucket list. On March 6, I called immediately to OAT and told them I did not feel it would be fair to other travelers to go on the trip. I could have, but it would have been unethical on my part. OAT told me that unless I had travel insurance that they sold, that they would consider ME cancelling the trip and no refund was due. They were NOT going to give me a refund or allow me to credit the money already paid to another trip when I was feeling well. This is extremely bad business practice and unfair.

I have traveled on 5 prior trips with OAT, and they are in bankruptcy right now. I just found out. I will pursue this matter with an attorney. Covid is a class of protected handicaps! They did nothing for me! Now I just want my money back. I paid $5960.70, of which I will additionally add bad faith on their part. Do not book this company, or you will be treated like I was! To date, we have not gotten our $700 refund and were told by customer service that we would have to wait 2-3 months to get our refund. We have waited up to an hour on hold for customer service to get the answer that refund will take 2-3 months.

At this point, we are not sure if we will again travel with OAT. Very unresponsive and poor customer service. They also told us that they would refund only once we lift the dispute filed with the credit card company. However, the 45 day count would start over. Credit card company said they never received any response from OAT to the dispute so OAT wants only to have us wait for our refund and not deal with dispute. We will never travel with OAT again!!! I made several phone calls indicating that the trip was to begin in 3 weeks and I had not received the application forms. No one returned my call. Yesterday I spoke with a supervisor. I confirmed that I never received the needed information (subsequently discovered that my travel mate had not either.). She was also able to send me the information I needed by email.

I was told because it was so close to the trip's beginning date, my options were: move the trip; submit information to the visa processing company and hope it would be processed in time. The visa company said my passport and visa might be returned a day or two before the trip, or not. I purchased trip insurance ($1500). If I cancel the trip, I receive a voucher for another trip on OAT. There is no way to cancel and receive my money. OAT takes no responsibility for their error. I've travelled with them 5 times in the past and could not be more disappointed that I have to cancel a trip at the last minute because of them. In June of this year, I purchased a trip to Tanzania; a trip I had been looking at for 5 years. I have a friend who also signed up for the trip. I was told to call on Sept. 1 to finalize my air flights. I called and was never able to get a human being on the line. I called back about every other day and was on hold for hours, but no one ever picked up my call. Feeling like something was wrong, I told my friend I was nervous and thought we should cancel the trip. Finally on Sept. 29, a human answered the call. I explained what had happened and that I wanted to cancel my trip. She said she could take care of that for me. I said I expected all of the money back, including the insurance money and she said yes I would get all of the money back. When asked when I'd get the money, she said 30-45 days. I wasn't happy with that answer but said ok.

The next day my friend called to cancel and ask for her money back. She was told she wouldn't get the insurance money back ($1,000+) because it was non-refundable. She referred to what I was told the day before and the gentleman told her I was given the wrong information. It was the first day for the woman I spoke to and she told me the wrong thing about the insurance money. This was relayed to me by my friend. Hours later I answer a call and it is my friend and the guy she spoke to at OATs. He called to tell me about the lady being on her first day at work and she told me wrong. My comment was that I really didn't care, and that wasn't my concern. I was told I'd get all of my money back and that's what I expected. I think we were waiting for a supervisor to get on the line with us. We must have waited 30 minutes or so, and he finally said the supervisor would listen to the taped call to hear what the lady told me.

My friend made numerous calls back, and at one point talk to the man who heads up the insurance company who assured her we would both get all of our insurance money back (apparently the company was handling our requests together since we were traveling together). WE wait and wait...no money. My friend calls back and talks to Pat ** who is in charge of refunds. He assures my friend she will get her money back in 45 days, and I would get mine back 45 days from when I was promised (Sept. 29). Well, again those dates have come and gone and we still do not have our money (the total we are due back is $10,000 and change).

I called today and spoke to a gentleman and explained the situation and he said the finance department sends out the refunds by hand and they are short staffed blah, blah, blah. He cannot get Pat ** on the phone for me, but he said he sent a message to the finance department to ask them to expedite my refund. There is no way for me to talk to the finance company directly nor can he give me the name of anyone for my attorney can talk to as I have lost my patience and see no other option but to get legal action going. He expressed his regret (more than anyone has done for me thus far) but had no further information. I commented I was sorry for him to have to deal with so many upset customers that OATS wasn't taking care of. None of this is his fault.

The icing on the cake is that at least 3-4 times a week I get a letter or email form OATS asking me to save money by signing up for another trip NOW. I believe they should cut the marketing budget and spend more money paying on empowered customer service representatives. I retired and planned to take multiple trips with this company. Needless to say, I wouldn't give them another dime. It's sad because until COVID this company seemed to have a sterling reputation based on all of my research.

When we arrived in Philadelphia at the American Airlines desk to check in for our flight to St Louis we were advised our tickets had been cancelled by British Air. We were not late for the flight and the flight was not full--only our tickets had been cancelled. If we still wanted to be on that flight we had to pay $649.20 additional for the two tickets that we had already paid OAT.

We paid the $649.20 and were seated on the flight AA533 that we had previously purchased thru OAT. We have contacted OAT for reimbursement as they purchased the original tickets. Now, OAT is saying they will review our claim which could take 3 to 6 months. Because we had no contact with British Air, all flights were arranged thru OAT, paid to British Air by OAT we had no contract with British Air, we fully expect OAT to compensate us in full in a timely fashion--not in 3 to 6 months.

The wait to speak to someone was one 1/2 hour, instead of telling me that I could apply my money to another trip, he asked me if I was interested in going another time or taking another trip. I told him no, and he transferred me to the cancelation department, again a wait of over 15 minutes.

After completing the process, I was informed that there was a 40% cancellation penalty. I asked if I could move the money to another trip, and was told that I could not do so. About 10 minutes later I called back, again a long hold, and explained that I found another trip that my husband and I would like to take instead. At that point I was told that even through I had just requested the cancellation the 40% penalty would still be in effect. This is the height of unfairness. There was no supervisor available, their policy is that a supervisor would call back in 7 to 10 business day. Today is day 10 and no return call.

I made a reservation along with two other couples to travel together on the Suez Canal crossing trip with OAT travel company. We paid for the trip in full. A few days ago I received a voice mail saying that they could not accommodate us on the tour so they were moving us to another date. They were supposed to follow up with an email and a phone contact regarding the change but that never happened. Now we have to change our airline reservations and bear the cost of that and we are no longer traveling with our friends. The email has never arrived and it is impossible to reach them by phone to try to work it out. I cannot believe any travel company would behave this way. And forget trying to call them. They never respond to emails. The worst company I have ever dealt with. I will never book a trip with them again. Terrible service.

I have tried to get in touch with a person at OAT for a month- basically since I booked my trip in the beginning of August. I was able to get ahold of one person who told me they could not help me but that a supervisor would get back in touch with me - three weeks later I'm still waiting. This is absolutely not acceptable. I have been on hold for two hours at a time. I cannot imagine if I truly had an emergency. Additionally, I e-mailed several times; I got one response but the person conveniently did not address my concerns.

Bottom line- your customer service representative evidently gave inaccurate information and the company does not stand behind the information provided. I was told by the one person who did answer my call that since my request was less than 90 days from departure, I could not get what is in your own travel Guide. NOWHERE IS THIS STATED-nor was it told to me when I decided to book the additional day (at the customer service representative's suggestion). This is our third OAT trip and it will be our last.

My issue: As directed by the customer service representative, I contacted the hotel directly to add the extra night and to schedule the hotel transfer. At. No time was I told that I would not get the lower group rate. I specifically asked about the airport transfer and was told this would be covered. I was told however that I would have to set up my own transfer.

FROM the OAT TRAVEL BROCHURE: Arrive Early, Stay Later: Arriving early or staying late allows you to spend one, two, three - or more - days abroad in the

first destination on your pre-trip extension or main adventure, or in the last destination of your main adventure or post-trip extension. The additional time is spent at your leisure, and you can either rest up or explore. Choosing this option lets you take advantage of our lower group rates - ranging from $25-$300 per person, per night - and your price includes accommodations, daily breakfasts, and private airport transfers.

I'm am stunned at all the negative reviews as they do not match my experiences with OAT. We took the Iberian Voyage: Lisbon to Barcelona cruise that departed the US on May 9, 2022. This was the first tour post-pandemic for virtually every crew member on the ship and for all our tour guides. They were all positively thrilled to be back at work and it showed in their attitude and attentiveness. Our overall tour guide, Gabo **, was the best guide we have ever had on any of our tours. The ship experience was phenomenal. The food and the service was perfect. The land portion of the trip went according to schedule and was great fun. I would give the tour 5 stars but I downgraded to 4 stars because there were a few negatives. First, getting someone at OAT on the phone was aggravating to say the least.

Second they were slow to refund our money for a Baltic trip they cancelled during the pandemic. It's possible they are having serious cash flow problems due to the pandemic and it may take a few months for them to get back to normal. Before the pandemic they were one of the highest rated tour companies and I'm willing to bet they will be again. And a little tip that might be helpful on any overseas tour: book you air travel through the tour company. They may not route you exactly the way you would, but if any issue comes up, the tour company handles it. We are looking forward to our next trip on OAT, Hidden Gems of the Dalmatian Coast & Greece (2023), Sept 30, 2023.

I fractured my spine 2 days before my Overseas Adventure Travel trip to Spain, France & Portugal in April of 2022. I was in the hospital when the trip departed and then in a back and neck brace, leaving me unable to travel. I have received communication that my paperwork is complete, but after repeated phone calls with long wait-times I am unable to determine why I haven't received a refund. The entire trip plus airfare was purchased through OAT and insured, which should make a refund simple. I'm expecting a refund of around $9,000 and extremely frustrated after repeated attempts to contact the company about the delay, I do not hear back from them.

I had booked and paid in full the Kenya and Tanzania Safari three times, and all were cancelled. I was added to a fourth trip two months before departure. However, I lost my reasonable airfare paid for in November 2021. Now I had to pay another $5,000 for the increased airfare in June 2022, more insurance, and an additional hotel room expense since I had to stay alone one more day. I was told that I would get a refund of $1,000 in 2-3 weeks since OAT caused the increase in expenses not me. I called OAT two days ago, and I was told that the refund was denied. I am a 14 time traveler with GCT/OAT and will NOT travel with them again.

I was finally able to reach someone at OAT and get my return flight changed. During that conversation, I discovered that the change I had requested to my departure months ago, although confirmed via email, had not been put through. The agent I spoke with couldn't help me but referred me to a supervisor, who called me the next day, made the necessary adjustment, and waived the additional cost because she acknowledged that it was their error. I have to admit that, when I've been able to reach a human by phone, they have all been friendly and very helpful; and I'm very pleased with the resolution of my issues.

    Original Review: Aug. 30, 2022

In April, 2021, I booked a trip for October 2022. I prepaid the trip in July, 2021, and purchased travel insurance. Shortly thereafter, I discovered that they were offering free cancellation. I tried to cancel my purchased travel insurance (since they were giving it for free) but was told I had missed the cutoff. That was bitter enough, but since then, trying to get through to them to change my pre- and post-trip itinerary has been impossible. Since February, I've sat on hold for 3 hours and 16 minutes on 3 separate occasions (not to mention many other calls when I held for 45 min or less), only to be dumped out of their queue; the third time the recording said "we will call you back within 72 hours." That was a week ago. Today I called them at exactly 9:00 am, when they first open, and am still on hold. My trip leaves in 37 days and it had better be utterly fabulous to make up for this, but if I can't get my flights corrected, I fear I'll have to cancel.

The organization was great before the pandemic and now is perfectly terrible. First, you have to wait at least half an hour before they answer the phone, and it's more like an hour and a half! Second, last year they cancelled a trip a couple of weeks before it left. No problem about getting our refund back, BUT to get the airfare was a nightmare. We used a company outside OAT because OAT's travel times are so terrible, but OAT said they would only reimburse us $250 of the $1400 cost. We knew that legally they had to reimburse us the whole amount but it would be such a hassle, we finally got the amount back from the airline.

This year, they changed the terms of the trip, cutting the desert highlight by half, which was the main reason we were going and reversing the travel order. Again, this was illegal to do after we signed up and we could have fought to get our money back (again, another independent air fare) but they did it several months before the trip was due to take off, so they kind of had us over a barrel. Perfectly terrible place. It's the last time we'll go with them.

I have travelled with OAT several times pre pandemic and was very satisfied. This past April I booked a trip to Scotland, Ireland, and Iceland. I used their airfare and pickup service in Scotland. Upon arrival at Scotland airport, we were not picked up and had to get to hotel on our own. I have emailed and called several times experiencing three hour wait times asking for a refund for lack of airport pickup. Finally got through on the phone and they took down the information two weeks ago and said management would call me to discuss. I have not been contacted. This company has changed from pre pandemic, and their excellent service has become terrible. I may use them again, but not for a couple of years to see if they have changed. Very disappointing. Be careful when booking a trip with them since they do not seem to have their act together and you do not want to be stranded at a foreign airport.

I agreed to the deposit, but when I read the terrible reviews of this company I called back, only a few minutes later, and talked the the same person (Ed), to cancel and request a refund.

The agent asked me why I changed my mind and I told him honestly, that in case of cancelation I will want a refund as opposed to credit for a further trip. I also explained to him that in the past I had two trips canceled, due to Covid, with two different companies and they both gave a full refund upon request. Regardless of my cancelation, they charged $350, and according to their "company policy" they are not refunding my deposit for 30 days. This agency exercises predatory practices by holding onto people's money.

Booked a trip with OAT to Morocco for 9/28/2021. Unfortunately, I fell and hurt both of my knees and my doctor felt I was a fall risk and did not feel I should be taking this trip. I needed physical therapy. Between Allianz and OAT they gave me a run around. Allianz informed OAT to release my money but I have not seen one penny of this money. Can NOT get through on phone. I have stayed on hold for over three hours with NO one helping me. Any suggestions on how to get my money back would be helpful.

I was booked in a three week tour of Egypt and Israel for April of 2020. Unfortunately the pandemic hit and my tour was cancelled. Even though I had purchased the insurance, I was informed that I could reschedule but was not eligible for a refund. I carefully explained that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me. I was encouraged to pick a date for 2022 and just see if something worked out. In September of 2021, I notified OAT by email that I would be unable to travel. In December I was notified that they needed information from me for my pending trip but that I could receive a refund for the Israel portion. I again informed them, I would not be traveling in January. They offered to start an appeal on my behalf so I could receive a refund on remaining monies.

On December 23, I received an email stating that my refund would be returned to me within 30 business days. Today I received a telephone call stating they were going to assess me a late cancellation fee despite the fact that I have a copy of an email stating I would not be traveling with them. The gentleman said there was no one to whom I could appeal and that I was just plain out of luck. These people are not honest and cannot even be trusted to do as they state in their emails.

I will continue to travel but will certainly not ever consider OAT. Our government helped businesses such as this through the pandemic but left the consumer out to dry.

I had a lot of second thoughts about booking at trip with OAT after reading all the negative reviews and problems people had once they booked a trip. I am a hard man to please, just ask my kids or my wife. My experience with OAT was stellar from start to finish. When I finally decided to book my Feb. 2020 15 day trip to Israel the salesperson answered every question I had thoroughly and patiently addressed all my concerns about the negative reviews. I was invoiced correctly from the get go. I had some follow up questions after I booked and they were all answered promptly by email or a phone.

Unfortunately 3 weeks after I book OAT had to cancel the trip due to Covid. They called me and explained my options. I choose the refund back to my credit card. They said it could take up to 4 weeks to appear on my credit card. Well today about 3 weeks later the credit is there just like they said. This unfortunate situation could not have been handled any better. I can’t wait to one day take my first trip with OAT hopefully sometime in 2022!!!

I am a 12 time traveler with Grand Circle and OAT. But maybe no more. They are impossible to reach by phone without waiting for hours. I even tried their emergency phone number and was on hold for hours. What if I had been stranded in a foreign country? They cancelled my Eastern Europe to Black Sea Cruise in Sept 2021 and cited "covid" or "civil unrest" issues. Baloney. They cancelled because they did not sell out the cruise and lied about it to me. I know because I went with Viking during the same month with no excuses like Grand Circle gave me.

Add to that they promised me a $1,000 credit on my next trip- which was to Antarctica in December. The invoice they sent me showed the credit- and 1 month later a new invoice arrived with the credit removed. Why? Another lie? Something is really wrong here with the company now and I would suggest be very careful with bookings as they are not the same company I traveled with for the past 12 years.

The tour guides have been excellent and the structure of the trips have been so well balanced with history, scenery, culture, hands on opportunities and free time. I’ve tried other companies and prefer OAT. The accommodations have been much, much better than Rick Steves and the smaller size (16 max) is better too and costs less. The people I’ve met are really great, not pretentious about their money or intellect. Just out to have fun and enjoy the surprises in store. Each trip has offered some very special moments that I doubt you’ll find as a tourist on your own or with another operator.

Something is going wrong with OAT. They are changing policies on people on the fly. I signed up for a trip to Spain for September, 2020 during the winter of 2019. Due to Covid, the trip was cancelled. I asked for a refund of my $700 deposit, but they said no refund, it would go towards another trip. I was not happy about that, being an advanced age and not knowing when Covid would end, but stuck with it. Today, June 7th, 2021, I tried to sign up for another trip to Spain in May of 2022. But they wanted another $700 deposit. I said that they already had my $700 deposit from the cancelled trip for more than a year now, but they said it was a "credit" on my account and I needed a new $700 deposit. Ridiculous! They want me to cough up another $700 a year in advance of the replacement trip? That would be $1400 of my money they would have and I still don't know if Covid is going to allow travel to Europe a year from now.

And .... I am wondering with all the complaints I am reading about, and with so many others complaining about the same thing happening to them, will this company even be around in another year? Then where would my $1400 be? I am calling my credit card company and hoping to get my original $700 back. No way I am booking with OAT again after this mess. And I'm certainly not giving them another $700 for a trip that may never happen. Beware!

OAT cancelled my trip without my knowledge and refused to give me a refund. I learned about the cancellation when I received a strange email from their insurance company stating they had changed my travel insurance as requested. Since I had not requested a change to my travel insurance I contacted the insurance company to inquire about their strange email. It took several insurance company personnel to find out that OAT had cancelled my trip due to Covid-19 and arbitrarily placed me on a trip a year later. OAT's actions were particularly deceptive, because only 3 weeks before the cancellation I had attended an OAT traveler meeting during which OAT management assured the attendees that if OAT cancelled a tour due to Covid, OAT would issue a full refund. Yet only 3 weeks after that meeting, they cancelled my trip and refused to refund my payments.

I wrote several letters/emails to request a refund. My emails reminded OAT that only 3 weeks before the cancellation, OAT management assured the attendees at an OAT meeting I attended that full refunds would be given if OAT cancelled a trip due to Covid-19. However, there was no response to my emails - just a voicemail stating they would not give me a refund. I was shocked at how poorly the cancellation was handled - that OAT never had the courtesy to contact me to let me know my trip was cancelled. I had to learn about the cancellation after inquiring about the strange email from their travel insurance company. I had taken several trips with OAT before the cancelled trip. I enjoyed those trips and if OAT had acted properly and refunded my payments for the cancelled trip I would have joined them on future trips. However, the treatment I received showed a lack of professionalism and more importantly trustworthiness.

As an established international company I am very disappointed that they would treat one of their frequent travelers in this manner. That is particularly the case because I was looking forward to resuming international travel when Covid-19 is behind us. There are so many more places I want to visit and I now have to find a travel company that I can trust.

OAT Tripadvisor promised I could cancel any time for any reason and get 100% refund, which is stated in their contract, and I agreed to take travel insurance, for which she pushed hard ($2300). Had to cancel for unforeseen medical reasons following month. Had paid $1000 deposit to OAT. OAT refunded $400, then told me I had to contact a company called Allianz to whom they had given $600 of my deposit to without my knowledge. After months of filling out Allianz's online forms, plus sending them hard copies and a physician's letter, since it was impossible to reach anyone there by phone, I gave up being stonewalled by Allianz and recontacted OAT.

OAT's answer was that they could do nothing to help me and that I had to deal directly with Allianz. So I lost $600 of my deposit and the $2300 in travel insurance all in a period of one month. By the way the OAT insurance Company??? it was Allianz. Definitely a conflict of interest. Bottom line...After being an OAT customer for more than a dozen years, I will never again trust OAT with my money.

We have previously enjoyed four tours and excellent service with Grand Circle Travel (parent of OAT). Our 2020 OAT tour to Israel and Greece was cancelled due to COVID-19 (understandable). Customer care since then has been awful. Originally OAT offered a full refund and future travel credit. When we opted for a refund, we were notified that refunds were no longer available and we were required to rebook the same or different tour for future travel. I protested this and was elevated to a manager who told me they would not make an exception.

We then reserved a 2021 tour. When the invoice for the new trip was received, it was nearly $2000 more than quoted by the Reservation agent. I protested the higher cost and was told they would investigate the travel credits that had been offered by the agent. We were at the deadline for receiving the "Good Buy" discount for the new trip so I paid the full cost of the invoice under protest. OAT then applied travel credits so that I had a credit balance of -$1989.35 on an invoice date June 17. I called to ask for the credit balance to be refunded. OAT said they would send a refund in 90 days. Instead, I receive a new invoice on 8/11/20 with Miscellaneous "COVID Certificate Issued" cost of $1989.35 added to trip cost, so now my credit balance is zero. No call or email to explain the additional cost.

A call to OAT indicated these "COVID certificates" are for future travel, even though I was told it would be refunded. I once again asked for the money to be refunded and was told my request would have to be submitted to a manager as an exception. Very disappointed that OAT is clearly forgoing customer service in favor of their own financial protection. OAT and Grand Circle are not to be trusted at this point.

In 2016, I began my first OAT trip in the Peruvian Amazon. The next stops were Lima (Macchu Pichu), Quito, and, finally, the Galapagos Islands. Upon stepping off the plane in Lima, my chest severely contracted -- the first time ever! Clearly, I had developed High Altitude Sickness, severely exacerbated by our direct travel to an artisan village at an higher altitude than Lima. Within two hours, I was very ill....parched, dizzy, exhausted. I now understand that our very competent guide was communicating with his 'local' supervisors who made no attempt to provide medical assistance, even oxygen, for three days until I was hotel bound in Quito.

OAT in Boston later claimed that there was no medical facility in LIMA to treat me. It was our guide's personal friend, a high altitude specialist, who confirmed my illness and connected with my travel insurance company in Canada. I was given no option but to return home ASAP (2 days later) although by that time I had recovered. Unfortunately, HAS did spark asthma which continues to affect my life....ALL BECAUSE OAT'S ITINERARY IGNORED THE NEED TO REMAIN FOR A DAY OR TWO AT THE LOWER ALTITUDE TO ACCLIMATE.

For many weeks, OAT in Boston (Including top management) refused to accept ANY responsibility, even claiming that Lima had no medical facilities to treat me!! Initially, I only requested reimbursement for the second half of the trip. I was refused -- not their fault that I became ill in Lima. Eventually, I contacted the Attorney General of Massachusetts (also in charge of Consumer Complaints). A day later, I received a FULL REFUND for the entire trip from OAT. That is the way to go!!

I have since traveled two more times with OAT and been generally very satisfied with OAT. I later learned that the itinerary from Lima has been changed to a night or two in the Sacred Valley -- at a lower altitude than the artisanal village. I am now booked for travel in late May 2021. No travel insurance covers Covid 19-related travel disruptions. I don't want to pay in full close to departure date in late May. At age 75, I might not be able to travel at a later/safer time.

I paid a $350 pre-deposit for OAT's trip to South India for 2021, which is refundable until dates are selected. OAT informed me that that are not running the trip in 2021 due to COVID, so I requested a refund. It's now been over 2 months and I haven't received the refund. I've called a couple times and have also sent emails, which they never respond to (maybe because they don't want a paper trail?). The last time I called they said it would take 90 days for them to refund the money. I'm now going to try going through my credit card company to see if the amount can be credited to my credit card (one of the reasons I would never pay them with a check).

I've traveled with OAT 11 times, and have had wonderful experiences, but their front office is a real problem. Undoubtedly they are having cash flow problems, but this isn't the way to treat long-time customers. I've seen other reviewers note that they are now trying to give credits for future trips rather than refunds for fully paid trips. I have 2 trips planned with OAT for 2021. I have downloaded the terms and conditions that I agreed to for those trips and took screen shots of my account showing the date of the agreed to terms. These terms pre-date the new terms recently adopted by OAT and provide for a refund for any trips cancelled by OAT, rather than a credit.

I would advise anyone who signed up for a trip with OAT prior to COVID to download the terms that they agreed to. It would be useful to have this information in writing in the event OAT cancels a future trip and refuses to provide a cash refund. Their new policy dated May of 2020 (and later versions) does note that they have the option of providing a travel credit, which they would undoubtedly opt to do. In the meantime, if COVID is still an issue 90 days prior to my next departure and they haven't yet cancelled the trip, I will transfer the deposit to another trip rather than letting them hold the entire balance while I fight with them about providing a refund.

I have a confirmation e-mail stating I would receive my cash back. How could the Trip insurance not honor my $300 Claim and how can OAT agree to give me my cash back and not follow through. How legal is it to hold people’s money.

They are not a ethical company. I loved traveling with them because of small group size and single supplement. I do not feel this company is ethical as there are complaints with BBB, Attorney General of Mass, TripAdvisor and several other travel sites. They need to be taken to court as I was lied to by their travel advisors and I also have confirmation from them, stating I would get a cash refund for my canceled trips.

Like so many of the previous comments, my wife and I have had many very enjoyable and worthwhile tours with OAT. For 14 years it has been our "go to" company whenever we did not want to travel to a particular location on our own. Now, with Covid-19, OAT has decided to screw all its loyal customers by reneging on its obligation to provide cash refunds for tours it cancels. In spite of our refusal of OAT’s offer to rebook the tour for 2021 and our request for an immediate cash refund, OAT unilaterally and without any authority booked us on a specific 2021 Fjord tour departing June 7, 2021, and ordered trip insurance from another company on our behalf. But the rebooked tour is not even the same.

Our 5-day Copenhagen pre-tour and overnight ferry to Oslo was deleted without reducing the total tour price. And, significantly, the fjord cruise portion of the tour will no longer be handled by the venerable Hurtigruten Line, an important reason we signed up with OAT in the first place. Instead, the cruise is to be undertaken by Havila Kystruten, a brand-new company which apparently has no experience conducting fjord cruises, and whose ships are still under construction in a Turkish shipyard. We have just mailed our 3rd request for a cash refund, and we suspect it will be rejected like the others. We will then follow the advice of others, and file a complaint with the Mass. Attorney General.

On Tuesday of this week (May, 2020), I was scheduled to leave on a trip with Overseas Adventure Travel. I prepaid $8,000 three months in advance of the scheduled departure date. Upon their recommendation, I bought their travel insurance and was told, "You can cancel your trip up to the day before, even if it is due to a 'bad hair day'." It turns out that I did not cancel the trip, instead, Overseas Adventure Travel cancelled the trip and will not give me a penny of my $8,000 back. When I asked for a refund, I was told, "We didn't cancel the trip, we postponed it until a year from now." Why should Overseas Adventure Travel have the use of my money for a year? I would like to have my own money back, to make good use of it. I'm reporting them to the Better Business Bureau and the Attorney's General Offices of both Colorado and Massachusetts.

All over the internet you will read other reviews from people who are furious for this same reason. Do not give Overseas Adventure Travel any of your money. They will willingly accept it. However, when they cancel your trip, you will NOT get a choice to either 1.) postpone your trip or 2.) refund your money. You get no choice. They will keep your money. I am out $8000.

OAT's actual tours are great but, in recent years, their administration and customer service have become difficult to work through. Now, like others, our May 2020 OAT trip was cancelled by OAT. OAT's Travel Passenger Agreement, which I had to electronically sign as having read and accepted in order to book our reservation in June, 2019, clearly states that, in the event that OAT cancels a trip, we are entitled to a refund if we so desire. OAT's first communication to us regarding the trip cancellation acknowledged this fact when it said "We (OAT) hope that you will hold your reservation to travel with us in the future." OAT created a contract between us in 2019 and it doesn't get to unilaterally change that contract now. Yet, that is exactly what they are trying to do.

In 2021, OAT is not even offering the trip that we purchased for 2020. Their position is that, "You've purchased a trip. We no longer offer it. You may not have your money back. So, select something from among our other offerings." Really??? I've contacted OAT six times by phone, email and letter, requesting a refund. Online evidence indicates that OAT has provided some other customers with refunds. My experience is that, when you call you can only speak to a customer service rep who simply says that "We've changed our policy." When you ask to talk to a supervisor, the rep responds that "They don't accept inbound calls." That's a Catch-22, clearly designed to prevent the customer from gaining any relief.

My wife and I have been on several trips with OAT and were always impressed with their people and service. However,... everything has not changed. Even though they committed in writing to give us a full refund for a trip they cancelled as per their policy at the time, they now say the policy has changed and since we had not yet been paid the refund, the new policy applies and we are entitled to 'credit' only.

Frustrated by long delays in phone calls, no response etc. by email has made it even worse. How can you plan a future trip when the world is shut down. I can't even enter the USA to start the trip. The OAT mission statement is geared around 100% customer satisfaction but that now seems to only apply if it suits them.

I would not recommend anyone book with OAT or Grand Circle.

We booked a trip to Kenya and Tanzania for August 2020. On March 31 we decided to cancel due to COVID-19. In a telephone call with Overseas Adventure Travel, we advised them of the wish to cancel and requested a refund in accordance with their terms and conditions published on that date on their website. We did rebook for August 2021, however. At the end of April, not having received the requested refund I spoke with their travel department. I was told there was nothing in their records to reflect payment but Corin said she would check and call me back in two business days. No phone call. I called and spoke with Jenny. I was told that over the first weekend in May the company changed its published policy and would only provide a voucher for a future trip.

I requested a call from a supervisor, which I did received on May 7. I was told their legal department told them that notwithstanding their clearly published terms and conditions as of the date of our cancellation which provided for a refund, they would not honor that policy. I advised them that we've filed a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the AG for Massachusetts. While the company certainly can change its policies going forward, they are bound by their published policy as of the date of the notice and request for refund. The terms and conditions which they created and published on their website constitute an enforceable contract with their client. We'll have to await their further action by either the Better Business Bureau and/or AG Consumer Affairs department.

Last Sept. (2019) we booked a tour to Spain and Portugal with OAT Tours for 3 weeks in May 2020. We have been talking with OAT since Feb. about what they will do as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Cancellation policy on their web site is very clear about retaining a fee if the traveler cancels the trip and returning the remainder to the traveler. Prior to March 31, 2020 they stated if we cancelled, we would have to pay some fees ($300 trip cancellation, $150 airline cancellation, and forfeit the insurance cost- this is stated in their Passenger Agreement on the web site, which is a legal document and we were required to agree to), but the rest we understood would be returned.

On April 07 OAT sent an email saying they have “postponed” our trip until the same time next year (we have not asked for or authorized that change). Also, they have said their Cancellation policy is changed and they will only offer a voucher for a future trip (although the Cancellation policy in the Passenger Agreement on their web site is still the same as above. They have cancelled the plane reservations (which they made as part of the tour) and have written us that we are confirmed on the 2021 trip. On top of that, they sent a bill for an additional $1,390 for a trip extension which we did not ask for and did not authorize. They gave us a cock and bull story about how it will be removed, but no explanation for how it was charged. They are not giving us any choice, except to take the “postponed” trip, accept a voucher to be used for other trips in 2021 or 2022 (forfeiting the insurance), or forfeit everything.

We paid $24,000 for the trip and they are refusing to give any of that back and we do not want to make any commitments at this time, due to the Covid-19 situation. There is a possibility that other events (including a daughter’s wedding) may interfere at that time in 2021. We bought trip insurance, but found that it doesn’t cover epidemics. OAT sent a letter signed by the president and vice-president (husband and wife) saying how they value our business and our safety and that’s why they’re doing this. This company is privately-owned and part of a wealthy private equity and investment company (Kensington Investment Company, Inc.) and probably have plenty of money to cover their debts. I’m amazed at their cavalier attitude. We are pursuing various avenues of redress. We will never do business with this company again!

In the past I have informed OAT that I cannot and will not go “my account” an electronic system and I instructed them to mail/email everything to me in hard copy. I received the Contract Terms and Agreement which I signed and mailed back in. It specifically stated that a timely cancellation would give me a full refund. Also despite my request to get receipts, etc on email OAT did not send me a copy of my travel insurance policy or policy number.

On 2/28/20 I received email from OAT saying trip was canceled. It gave options to “minimize the impact” of that cancellation. Option 2 stated that I could receive a full refund of everything that I had paid to OAT, including the travel protection plan that I had purchased. On 3/3/20 I called OAT and spoke with “K..” saying that I wanted a full refund. She stated that the refunds would be sent back to banking institution from which they were received. She stated that my purchased travel insurance would go back on my debit card and the trip fees would go back to my bank account. On 4/9/20 I call OAT again to find out why the refunds had not been sent to my banking institution. I did not get the name of the person I spoke to that morning but “she” that I spoke to assured me that the refunds would be issued within a week and sent back to my banking institution.

On 4/30/20 again I called, this time I spoke to “R...” He stated that no money was going to my banking institution but that I would receive a travel voucher. He stated that the policy had changed on 4/24/20 and cash refunds were not being issued. I never received any notice of policy change and the original contract terms and agreement form that I signed stated that there is a cancellation full refund policy. I have filed a complaint at the Boston Better Business Bureau and have received no response from OAT. Today I am filing this complaint. Tomorrow I am filing a complaint at the Massachusetts Attorney General.

I do not want a travel voucher because I will not be traveling with Overseas Adventure Travel again. Under the original contract terms and agreement I am entitled to a full refund issued in cash going back to the financial institution from which OAT received the money. Failure to refund all my money is not only a breach of contract on their part it is downright robbery because they have taken my money and refused to return it.

There are still tourists stranded in Peru -- it is not a desirable or safe destination and its borders are closed. Initially, the OAT representative said I would get a refund within four weeks. When that didn't happen, I called and was told that OAT's new policy is to offer credit which can be used later. No refunds.

I pointed out that OAT's Terms and Conditions specify conditions under which refunds are offered and that I met the criteria. Nevertheless, OAT refuses a refund. Their behavior as a corporation is unethical and leads me to question whether I will book future travel with this company, assuming it stays in business (not likely). So, I have turned this matter over to my credit card company, confident that they will get the refund for me. So much goodwill built over the years, gone in an instant. I have read on other websites that many people are in the same boat and have filed claims with the Better Business Bureau (some successful) and with the New York State Attorney General. They said they would return all my money, but needed until April 5th because they were inundated with returns and everyone was working from home. Meanwhile the travel insurance company Allianz said I could only get my refund through OAT, so I couldn't even get a partial refund that way. Okay... I didn't receive my refund from OAT by the 5th, gave them 10 additional days, and called them to follow up on April 15th. They admitted they hadn't even processed my return and couldn't tell me when or even if they would.

Meanwhile, I could use that money for completely unanticipated expenses due to the virus myself and this is causing me unnecessary delays in some of my expenses, too. OAT told me I would get a refund but when refund (Visa credit) didn't show up in 2 weeks I called and was told OAT changed their refund policy and were applying it retroactively so I would only get VOUCHERS. I already had deposits on trips in Oct 2020, Jan 2021 and Mar 2021. OAT would not allow me to use vouchers on these trips. Must use vouchers on a NEW booking and vouchers expire 12/31/2021. Since I had already had 2 trips booked in 2021 I had no intention of booking additional trips. Combined my husband and I have given OAT/GCT more than $326,528 for 55 trips since 2006. Until this happened I never had a problem with OAT and highly recommended them to friends and family. NO MORE. STAY AWAY FROM OAT.

We were book on trip for Greece leaving March 21 with a group of 9. We were informed, understandable that they cancelled the trip! We had insurance but when they cancelled they offered us full refund but have since decided to change their policy and went ahead and said we have to rebook on another trip. When we asked what change they said, "Our policy" which they said they have the right to do at any time. We asked when and they said last Thursday. 12 days after they said that they would gives us a refund. They then also want to charge us for any changes with potential increase and decide when we can go. After our previous trip I thought they were trustworthy. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! Since we had to cancel our insurance after what they said initially we have no way of getting our money back. Buyer beware with OAT!!??

I have taken several OAT trips and was overall pleased with the experience. Based on that, I convinced several of my friends to sign up for a trip to Israel/Jordan for next April. At the time we signed up I informed the agent that there would be 7 of us. They had not yet assigned the dates for 2020, so we made a deposit to get an early notice of the trip. They did not inform me that I needed to create a group number to ensure that we all were included on the same date. When notified we called to reserve for the April 12 trip. When one couple, called a day after notified, they were informed that the trip was full.

Not sure what the purpose of informing the agent that we wanted to go together. Obviously the training is deficient. They would not add a couple to the April 12 trip. Nor do they take names down in case of cancellations. We are terribly disappointed that they could not find a way to accommodate us. A well run travel agency would find a way to get us taken care of, even if it called for them to contact someone already in the April 12 time frame and offer them a credit to change their date. Too much to expect from OAT. Just sorry, you did not sign up as a group. Will seriously reconsider doing OAT again.

Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), is a travel company that caters to adults over 50. I have gone on 6 trips with them and have paid for another one this summer. My husband and I had planned to travel to China and Tibet with OAT on March 23, 2020. Bad timing! OAT, understandably, cancelled the trip but refunded our insurance premium, flight and trip costs, and upon receiving our receipts, will refund the China Visa application fees we had incurred. In addition, they have offered us $500 discount each on any trip we sign up for in 2020. Our trip to China was a last minute deal and they will give us the same price if we book the trip in 2020. Until we know that COVID19 has been contained, we are not likely to take them up on the last offer, but the how they have handled the rest of the cancellation truly reflects excellent customer service!

I have found the places we have stayed in all over the world to be better than any we could afford on our own: palaces in India and 5 star hotels in Morocco, for example. Their guides are excellent and always attentive to the group's needs. The company keeps to their number of 16 people for their trips so we get a lot of attention and it is easier to get into places as a smaller group. Grand Circle, the parent company, does take more people, but I am addressing OAT. I highly recommend OAT and often do to our friends!

We have done 9 trips with OAT and most of them have been very enjoyable. Their air department has gotten better over the years, but we find using miles to be best. You would think that after 9 trips we would get better rooms as has been mentioned in other reviews, but this is often not the case. We were in a coffin like room in Porto and a room with no heat and hot water in Patagonia. The trip leader did not believe me after my cold shower until they checked out the room. This is my major complaint. OAT is very affordable and if you book with them do not expect anything over a 3 star hotel or the worst rooms in a 4 star.

Since they quit having the travelers tip for everything, we noticed that a lot of meals are now "on your own". We think using OAT for exotic destinations, i.e. Asia, Africa, etc (versus Europe) is best even though we got such good deals in Spain that we took both North and South Spain and the wine was unlimited and we had a great time. We agree with other reviews, do NOT buy their insurance. Use the Chase Sapphire card's insurance and buy supplemental evac when in Africa.

I was logging on to get the link the the OAT site to book a trip for next year and spotted this review site. SO sorry for the folks who have had a bad experience but need to say we've done 5 trips and every one of them has been outstanding. And the service complaints, wow, we've had great help from these guys. On virtually all our trips we've done some self hosted travel on either or both ends, and OAT has been able to make that work out much more economically than I could trying to stitch together the flights myself. OAT tends to provide experiences outside the normal travel agency, small groups, run by local folks, spending quality time with local folks. They have a nice balance of independent time on the trip with help sorting out what makes sense for you and your interests, abilities, and physical limitations. At this point I'd have to say I would not want to travel with any other travel company. 5 stars in my book.

As I am about to take my 13th trip with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) I am astounded by the number of whiny comments that seem to make OAT look like a bunch of boogers looking for any means possible to ruin one's travel plans. Come on folks, if OAT were that bad a travel company, how on earth could they have remained in business for this long a period?

Understanding that nobody or no company can be perfect, I have had NOTHING but excellent experiences during my SOON TO BE 13 TRIPS. OAT's team leaders are uniformly superb in their knowledge of their respective tour areas and all have exceptional communications skills. The trips are designed TO BE ADVENTUROUS, so if you're counting coup on whether your hotel is five stars or whether your fellow traveler has a two vanity bathroom and you don't, YOU'VE MISSED THE WHOLE POINT OF THEIR TOURS!! Perhaps you'd be better off with a Viking tour that costs twice as much or even a National Geographic Tour where you'll pay three or four times with the guarantee that they'll tuck you in and kiss your behind each and every night.

As for me, I'm a big boy and can handle the reality that a person who has traveled 43 times with OAT (yes, I actually did meet one of these folks) might and should get a bit better room than I. And as for travel insurance, I'm 71 and all I really need is airvac insurance that one purchases for a fraction of the price for a whole year. And air travel: hell I've been flying now for 51 years and have learned to take nothing for granted.

But OAT brings the richest of travel EXPERIENCES! From having mint tea in a Bedouin's camel hair tent, to cooking your own veal marsala in Sicily, to eating Mopani worms in a mud hut in Zimbabwe, it's all an adventure that one remembers for lifetime. If I wanted everything to be perfectly ordered and planned I'd stay home and be bored: get my drift??

I have traveled with OAT almost every year since my first trip to Thailand in 2000. I have seen parts of the world that I would never have seen otherwise. A visit to an: orphanage, school, and a home hosted meal are standard for all of my trips....wonderful experiences that I would never have had without OAT. Ever been to the snake charmers village in India or a Masai village? The trip leaders are all local people that know their countries and are very willing to share their political / cultural insights, priceless.

Our trip leader Nelson in Patagonia made the comment that in his view there are two kinds of visitor to his country: (1) Tourists and (2) Travelers. OAT is for World Travelers and not tourists. World travelers can expect bumps in the road. It's just life. It's how well your trip leader copes with the unexpected that makes OAT a great way to see the world. OAT is not for everyone...some would like the Club-Med experience at the higher cost? Your choice, but mine will always be with OAT.

I made the mistake of telling our tour leader that my husband had early stage Alzheimer's. Her immediate reaction was to say that OAT policy was to send people with this disease home if they were traveling alone -- he CLEARLY wasn't. She warned me that he would be my responsibility (which I already knew) and then suggested that it would be better for us to go home and she could arrange that. I thought this might be my husband's last chance to travel so I told her we would not go home. Throughout the trip, she harassed me, telling me every time I let him do something wrong, like accidentally pick up and eat someone else's box lunch - a mistake I could easily have made. He also "wandered" once when we got off a bus for a bathroom bank.

If wandering is looking around before you go in the bathroom, then I'm guilty and I bet a lot of other people are as well. To make matters worse, when I filled in the post-trip survey, I expressed my unhappiness with our treatment, I received a form letter that said they would work on the itinerary. In fact, I applauded the itinerary. The sad thing is that the trip would have been spectacular if I hadn't been so stressed about our tour guide, who seemed to be looking for mistakes. Fortunately, my husband had a wonderful trip because I didn't tell him what was going on behind the scenes AND I am certainly not aware of any hardship for our tour leader or for the other travelers.

The company's insurance is more expensive than purchasing by oneself. I went with the company policy figuring it would be more convenient if it became necessary to cancel my trip. However, this was NOT the case. In order to file a claim I was sent via the web to another site. I had to fill out all the information that OAT already had and submit it to a totally unaffiliated website. I got NO HELP from OAT. In addition, and as a warning, I booked this same trip a year ago and after paying in full and getting confirmed, I was "bumped off" less than 60 days from my departure date. No reason was given. I foolishly rebooked for this year, but due to an illness in the family I am now unable to take the trip. No one at OAT seems to care, nor do they offer any help. Chose another travel company!!

We have traveled with OAT four times (Spain/Portugal, Turkey, Morocco and "The Holy Land" and have been very pleased with the trips until our most recent trip to "The Holy Land". They arranged the air and said our VISA to Jordan and transfer to the hotel in Amman would be covered by OAT. Our flight to Amman was changed by Austrian airlines to a day earlier for reasons that were not clear. Because of this change we arrived in Amman the day before the official start of the tour and because of that OAT refused to pay the VISA fees or provide transfer to the hotel in Amman. Upon our return I had a long conversation with customer service and they remained intransigent citing bureaucratic rules. If I ever travel with them again I will book my own flights.

Sicily’s Ancient Landscapes & Timeless Traditions is my first trip to join OAT. On Day 3, our tour’s first real start date, I was surprised that despite having 1 whole day in Palermo and walking around for about 4-5 hours, we didn’t go inside any of the top attractions in Palermo, like Cappella Palatina/Palazzo Reale, etc., except for the Cathedral.

As such, on Day 4, I have decided to stay in Palermo, instead of joining the optional tour. On Day 5, the itinerary states that we are going to Segesta which mentions the 424 B.C. Doric temple which is the one and only attraction in the area. But guess what, we actually did not go there, but saw the temple a few kilometers away! For Syracuse, the tour does not go to the most important tourist site of Parco Archeologico della Neapolis (which includes Teatro Greco and Latomia del Paradiso/Ear of Dionysius). And even for Mt. Etna, the tour just stays on the lower part (1,900 meters) where no entrance fee is needed and does not go up to the top (2,920 meters) which is the real attraction, by taking the cable car and then the 4WD minibus.

In addition, we have this hypocritical guide – Viviana **! Having joined OAT the first time, I naturally asked Viviana why we didn’t visit these top sites. She then became so defensive and even retorted why I did not tell her beforehand when we were in Segesta that I would like to see the Doric Temple as she would have directed me to go on my own (as some other people in her previous tours did).

So on Day 8, I knew better and asked her if I could go to Archeologico della Neapolis on my own when we reach Syracuse. Again, she became so defensive and to make the story short, the next morning, she told me that I will be “dismissed” from our tour immediately as I was “spreading among my tourmates that this tour is bad”. Frankly, I was relieved - I ended up seeing much more places and top sites on my own in the remaining 7 days, (like in Mt Etna, I went to the top which you would know once you were up there that there is really not much to see below) but spent only less than 1/3 of what OAT refunded to me proportionately!

If you just want to go to Sicily so that you can say that you have been there, then this tour can be for you. Otherwise, if you want to see the real thing, this tour wastes a lot of your time (and money too) by having lots of cheap fillers - so-called cultural and local experiences, without going to the real top interesting sites, or in some cases, the tour might go, but you only get to see them from the outside or from a distance! What is the point?

I have taken 10+ OAT trips and have been generally happy but have a few suggestions for those who are new to OAT:

    1. I book ground only and make my own air reservations. The same goes for any pre- or post- stops. I keep the OAT reservation as simple as possible.

    2. I have separate medical evacuation insurance and don't buy their insurance. (But note that evacuation insurance only covers mishaps during the trip, not before leaving.)

    3. When getting on the phone with their rep I make these things clear right off the bat and cut off their sales attempts.

    4. If I'm traveling with a friend we agree on a time and have the OAT rep conference in the other person. The single supps go very quickly and there is no guarantee that a space will be available even an hour later. So definitely book at the same time.

    5. Particularly if you're interested in a free single supp, be aware that new trip dates are posted as earlier dates fill up, so keep checking. I'm going on the Prague trip in October and just noticed that a new date with 2 single supps has appeared.

    6. The tour managers I've had have ranged from good to excellent and have generally found them to be hard working and helpful. When you buy into a group trip you give up a certain amount of independence and simply have to accept that. Also, the group leaders are not responsible for the reservation process or other policies coming out of the Boston HQ, but frequently bear the brunt of traveler complaints.

    7. Many of the hotel have been very good, especially in Europe, but quite a few have left much to be desired either because they were shabby and badly in need of renovation or because they were poorly located. It's true that travelers with the most seniority get the best rooms, but this is no different than airlines giving upgrades to their best customers. As you take more trips you move up in the pecking order and also accumulate credits that can be applied to future trips.

I continue to travel with OAT because overall I'm satisfied.

I didn't keep track of all the iterations so the below is essentially a sampling of my frustration. Representatives presented themselves as knowledgeable but the information provided was simply wrong. In particular, they really have no clue about how upgrades work. We were upgrading our coach seats to business for the Africa safari trip. There was great initial confusion on the part of OAT about what could be upgraded, and for what cost. We were simply given incorrect information and ended up paying $600 more per person than promised. Still worth it to us. But the upgrade didn't include one of the 6 flight legs, a long one, for some reason.

Variations on the response to this:
    i) "It will be done as soon as departure is within 3 months." (Nope.)
ii) "We'll take care of it as soon as the seats are released to us, when we're within 3 months." (Nope--never heard from OAT about this.)
iii) "The airline will upgrade some legs on a complimentary basis." (Really? When has an airline ever done this--and they didn't, of course.)

iv) "Call the airline." (And the airline of course won't touch these since they're through a travel agency.)

All the while listening to the same hold music with each painful OAT "hold". I think the representatives are happy to get you off the phone and move on to their next satisfied customer rather than bothering to know what they're talking about and actually solving a problem realistically. Dealing with their air desk is supposed to make the flight portion of the trip easy--not even close. With this experience and according to the other reviews, OAT may be losing some pretty frequent and relatively high-end travelers (such as ourselves).
