As a nine-time wanderer with OAT to countries all over the world, I‘m always rewarded with exceptional guides who never shy away from controversial topics. The small group size enables us to go into local homes, speak with community leaders, and engage with artisans, business leaders, and agricultural farmers whose endeavors have often been in their families for generations. In addition to the many churches/cathedrals, museums, and historic sites, we also have fun with local people. We’ve danced as an Arbereshe played his guitar, rose before sunrise to give food to monks, walked amongst penguins, rode scooters Ho Chi Minh City, and ate tarantula in Cambodia. There’s a surprise around every corner if you let OAT show it to you!

My first adventure with OAT was Inside Vietnam plus five days in Cambodia. Our guides Henry and Wuthy were superb. Every question was answered, and every request was filled. Once we’d seen the major sites, off the beaten track experiences were the best including water puppets, meeting my university student Nam ** at Dalat University and performing my solo show “Jeannette Rankin Fights Back” on the deck of our wooden boat in Ha Long Bay.

I never expected to take an organized tour to South East Asia having lived work and traveled there for nearly two decades, but the OAT itinerary was enough to make me sign up for the Ancient Kingdoms: Thailand Laos Cambodia Vietnam trip this past February. It was truly a great trip getting me to places I had not visited before and to meeting people and having encounters that were not possible had I been traveling independently. I had never participated in a Buddhist alms ceremony, never tried cobra wine, eaten fried tarantula or traveled the Mekong River and its tributaries.

The learning and discovery opportunities were outstanding, putting us in contacts with Cambodians who suffered under Pol Pot's regime, and seeing the consequences of the bombing campaign along the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos. Our trip leader, Joe, was the best ever and the local guides in each of the countries outstanding. Travel companions could not have been better!

My husband and I just returned from the Ultimate Safari, which goes to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. It was fabulous. Our guide Mandla was so knowledgeable and accommodating. He was perfectly suited for his job. You could tell he liked people and was proud of his country. I really liked the camps. We were glamping. Cabins were comfortable and private. All of the staff were so nice and hard working. The food was yummy fresh and healthy.

I have to say you get up early and the day is very full with game drives and learning activities, home and homestead visits. I feel we got a well rounded experience of some of the aspects of life there. I haven't even spoken about the animals of which there were plenty and the guides work so hard for you to see them! I went to see the animals but got so much more than that. It was very organized and well planned. I would definitely travel with OAT again!

I just returned from OAT tour of Greece and Albania with an extension to Kosovo and N. Macedonia. It was amazing. The group leaders and local guides are the best: they are passionate about their respective countries and knowledgeable about its history and the ancient sites. The food was delicious and the accommodation were terrific and centrally located. Step out the front door of the hotel and you are right in the middle of Athens, Pristina or Tiranë. The days on the OAT boat, Arethusa, were heaven. The captain, hotel manager and crew were welcoming, professional and amazing. Our days on the boat were delightful and equaled with days in beautiful ports. I encourage all to take an OAT tour for immersion in a country, its history and culture. You are guided by caring individuals who hope that you leave enriched by the experience and hopefully will return again to their countries.

Just returned from an amazing trip to Peru and the post trip to Lake Titicaca with an incredible guide, Walter. The trip is hard with several airplane connections, bumpy roads and steep mountains but we were fully immersed in their culture past and present. The balance of organized activities and free time with organized choices of extended exploration was perfect. Walter is a scholar, very well organized and always helpful to each individual. The multitude of transportation arrangements is incredible.... Getting us from one location to another...giving us information before and during travels. If any individual had a specific desire, Walter saw to it that it happened. As someone with special dietary needs, Walter was on top of it everywhere we went.

For each of us, he checked in and made certain that the trip was going well for them and that all their expectations and needs were being met. The hotels were top rated as was the food. The buses and trains were comfortable though the roads have speed bumps and potholes. This is not a trip for anyone with health issues as the mountains are steep, the roads bumpy and some days long. See the 4 rating. I especially loved meeting the local people and the spontaneous stops to mix up with them; ie, a Saturday night dance! This trip was harder than I expected but so worth it to learn and see significant parts of Peruvian history as well

    as life today.

Just finished the Ultimate Australia tour along with the Tasmania pre-extension. This is a one month adventure that gives you a broad sampling of what the Australian continent has to offer. The tour is rigorous but necessarily so in order to see a huge chunk of the world. Beginning with the Island of Tasmania with its fascinating history of convict transportation one gets a good introduction to the European occupation of this part of the world. The first of 4 internal flights takes you to the vibrant city of Melbourne. I never would have guessed a city of over 6 million could offer so much to visit. I had no idea what to expect in our next stop in the great central portion of the country with Uluru Rock and the desert outback but was duly blown away with the diversity and beauty of the land.

Of course you can't help being bombarded with how poorly the indigenous population was treated but the country is clearly attempting to make some amends. For complete contrast we then venture into the rainforest and experienced what 16" of rain in 24 hours is like. Left with a deep appreciation for the importance of preserving this key element of our biosphere. Ended up the trip with a quick snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef which was simply gorgeous and matched only by our final stop in the great city of Sydney which all of us thought we could easily make our home.

And seeing the Sphinx with the pyramids in the background: fantastic! We spent 5 nights on a the Dahabeya Asiya, so relaxing and a great way to spend more time getting to know the travelers in our group. Our trip leader taught us so much about the history of Egypt, the pyramids, monuments and temples. This is a wonderful trip for anyone interested in ancient Egypt!

The trip was a wonderful experience with very knowledgeable tour guides and very amiable fellow travelers. We learned about so much history, both recent and ancient, from both visual and information shared from our tour directors. We were also very lucky with perfect weather.

Our Wildlife and Landscapes tour of Costa Rica was fantastic. Our guide, Alex, was a walking encyclopedia, sharing his knowledge and expertise clearly and with great humor. The locations, accommodations, meals and visits with the local families made the experience exceptional. Alex was flexible when the occasional interruption occurred (a tree across the road) and always found a solution to any issue. This was our first tour with a group, having traveled for years on our own, and we weren't sure it was the style of travel for us. After this trip, we know we will travel with OAT again. The itinerary selection and organization was outstanding.

We had a trio of a lifetime. You would think seeing the pyramids, the sphynx, the new Egyptian Museum, the museum of the mummies, yacht trip on the nile and iconic temples visited would have been the highlights, but the visits with the people of egypt, the camel market the learning to make baskets and having a trip leader who was not just a wealth of knowledge but had an obvious love of his people and his job. He taught us how to read and write in hieroglyphics. Ayman had first hand knowledge of archeology and taught us to love all things egyptian. The food was amazing and learning about Ramadan and the Muslim religion was a bonus. Our group leader Ayman was so helpful in finding the best deals and quality of souvenirs. With a small group of 16 we became fast friends and still keep in touch. That is what makes a vacation epic!

We went on the Pure New Zealand trip. The pretrip in Australia was great. Good hotels, activities and an excellent trip leader Paul. However, the main adventures was a disappointment. Oat chose substandard hotels for our first two hotels. They were dirty and had poor service. The trip leader for the main trip was not very professional in appearance or organization. We did not feel well looked after at all. The promise of porterage (handling of luggage) had to be requested several times and was an inconvenience for our leader. This is a basic amenity when one joins a small group tour. The quality of the included meals were very mediocre.

This is my 5th trip with this organization, and I am not sure I will go with them again.

The trip and experience was wonderful. I took the Egypt Nile cruise with Jordan pre-extension right before the conflict with Iran shut it down. Lots of unique experiences and all the major highlights of Jordan and Egypt were covered. Transportation was seamless and accommodations were great. My only problem was when booking, I got a few conflicting communications and was not given correct cost of flights when I paid, necessitating an additional charge a few days later. Also, there was a 5 to 6 hour wait between flights in Istanbul on the way home.

My wife and I were on OAT's Ultimate Africa tour in August 2025 and had a horrible experience with their customer service people. The bottom line is book your airline reservations directly with the airline, not through OAT. We missed our outbound flight on British Airways and OAT's travel department was absolutely no help in getting a refund or accommodation for the remaining flights on our itinerary. We had to book a complete new set of flights, which in essence meant we paid double for our flights. OAT said to deal with the airline and the airline said to deal with OAT - perfect example of getting the runaround.

We contacted British Airways directly, numerous times, and they said they couldn't do anything since OAT was the "owner" of the tickets. In our last correspondence from British Airways, they said to have OAT's travel department contact them about processing a refund. OAT flat out refused to do that. Why would OAT do that? Were they too lazy to be bothered, or just didn't care? We'll never know. OAT did give us a $1,000 travel credit on another one of their tours, but I can't come up with a reason why I would want to book another tour with them. For OAT, customer service is a misnomer.

Let me start by saying Costa Rica is an amazing place. We did the immersion tour and it did not disappoint. Our guide Allan is what truly made this a great experience. He was so knowledgeable, understanding and kind. We feel we have made a friend for life. The home visit with a local family and cooking a meal with them was amazing. The school visit was excellent. Our guide chose some amazing restaurants to take us to. We had 16 people. All great to meet and travel with. The outrigger canoe trip to the beach was Pura Vida.

Now to the improvement. OAT could find better accommodations. The Holiday Inn was OK, Punta Leona was a definite miss. Would not recommend for a return. Magic Mountain with the Hot Springs was a win. The sloths, monkeys, macaws, toucans, etc were amazing. I will say this 1000 times…. Allan is an asset to OAT. He made this experience so memorable. I’m 76 and have been blessed to have travelled extensively. This Ultimate African Travel Adventure was, without a doubt, the absolute BEST, MOST UNUSUAL, and EXCITING adventure I have ever been on!! We saw all of the “Big Five” animals. We sat beside 4 lions eating the remnants of an wildebeest. Giraffes, elephants, zebras, hippos, rhinos and impalas were seen almost daily. Our guides were the most knowledgeable naturalists I have ever been around. Our group, of 13, had an incredible guide who wanted us to mingle with, and have conversations with, native Africans. So she arranged several events where that took place.

I was left with a love and admiration of a whole new race of people! Our fabulous guide, Mamma G, attended to the tiniest details, organized daily activities down to every minute. No detail was left unturned. She spent her valuable time, getting to know each of us. The Never have I had a guide more congenial or more organized and helpful!

This was an excellent in depth tour of Egypt covering most of the ancient sites from Abu Simbel in the far south near the Egyptian/Sudan border to the Great Pyramids outside Cairo. The tour guides were academically trained Egyptologists who also knew how to maneuver and time our arrival at the many sites in ways that ensured we avoided the crowds as much as possible. The time on the river boat, especially the food, was outstanding. The hotels could hardly have been better in terms of of convenience and amenities. The optional post-trip extension to Alexandria was well worth doing.

A great feature of this as with all OAT trips was a home hosted meal with a local family. In this case we enjoyed two meals, one with a family In a village near Luxor and another with a family in Cairo. Overall there was much to see and do in a relatively short time. A highlight of the tour was the brand new Grand Egyptian Museum which is an overwhelming experience in its self. The only caution would be that there is a lot of walking and climbing stairs often on very uneven surfaces, otherwise this a trip well worth taking.

They had many activities to keep us engaged such a a mascot that everyone had a chance to take pictures with along the way. The effort they gave will keep us coming back. They both lived through the Russian occupation and were really able to share the before and after. The husky farm, the reindeer adventure were not just an hour here but was a total interaction with the owners giving insights into their lives. Visiting the Oodi library was breathtaking with the amount of services available. Learning about the Sami was detailed and heartfelt.

The only item that could have been better was with the office staff Two items. Our flights took us 3 hours in the wrong direction both leaving and coming home. This should have been able to be done better. The other is we should have been told upon booking that we would receive Artic outerwear upon reaching Lapland that we did not have to bring our own. Quite by chance, we were invited to join an OAT trip to Tanzania and we are so thankful we said yes! Of course, the animals were a highlight as you would expect for a safari. But it was the people we met who opened their worlds to us with such grace and goodwill that made this trip beyond anything we had envisioned. Our guide, Emanuel, was a spectacular host. Smart, informed, funny, and fastidious about every trip detail, he embodied the kind of curiosity and sheer delight in living that dispels borders and opens us to our shared humanity. We are grateful to him and to Alex, Francis, and Ronald, who can spot a leopard in a tree or a rhino among the rocks with accuracy and ease. To the Maasai, to the school children, to the astonishing women we met who are owning their place as agents of change, our profound thanks.

We recently took two contrasting Women Only tours with OATS. One to Sicily and one to Costa Rica. The tour to Sicily actually had a male guide who automatically did not fulfill the requirement of an ALL Women's Tour -- but that might have been overlooked by the 11 women on the tour IF he had been a good guide and not dismissive of women's concerns and needs, rude, shaming from time to time, and demanding of attention from us, instead of the other way around. The tour to Costa Rica however, had an amazing guide, female, who fit right in but ALSO was a terrific guide. She was organized, courteous, a great listener and made all the 15 women feel welcomed. An expert in birds, the natural life of CF and history/geology, etc.

On another tour to Portugal/Southern Spain in 2022 we also had a female guide for an ALL Women's Tour, who was also wonderful. We could not say enough positive things about her. So my suggestion is to make sure that the guide is actually a woman if you are looking for a Women's Only Tour and certainly not a man who might not understand that women sometimes want to just be with the girls on a trip (to avoid just that male type of behavior we experienced in Sicily). The two with women guides were outstanding -- could not have been better!

There was no breakfast at 730 said had to make more and also had to go out and get pastries. Items in the room were broken. Would not go back. Not close to anything to walk to.

I recently returned from a trip to Thailand, 16 days. It was a fantastic trip, my seventh with OAT. As always, the trip leader, Kitty, was phenomenal. She made the trip what it was. She is kind, knowledgeable, helpful and accommodating, funny, intelligent, and efficient. She knows her country and planned wonderful surprises for us at various points on the trip. She is a real asset to OAT and they should do anything they can to keep her as a leader in their organization. Highlights of the trip - the almsgiving ceremony with the monks at Sukothai, the visit to the Elephant sanctuary in Chang Mai, the Wellness Spa in Sukothai, the curry making "class" on the first day in Bangkok, the home hosted meal in Chang Mai, and the guest speaker for the controversial subject talk in Bangkok.

The accommodations were pretty good most places, but OAT should find a different hotel in Chang Rai. The one we stayed at was not up to par - room was small for two people and there were only 2 electrical outlets, which in this day and age is absurd. We had 5 devices we needed to keep charged and it was a real challenge in that room. The itinerary for this trip is excellent, but it does require some long days on the bus. Also, the pace is pretty intense. A little more down time might make it less exhausting, with maybe one day when you can sleep in and get a later start on the day. Overall, another great OAT experience, with a deep cultural immersion and a chance to see off the beaten path things and meet local people.

I recently returned from a trip to Ethiopia that far exceeded my expectations. The pre-trip service in arranging airfare and answering questions was prompt and helpful. OATs shines in having the best guides of any company (and I travel a lot) and this trip was no exception. Abi was a jewel. He contacted me in advance to discuss any concerns or questions. He was so attentive throughout the trip to make sure that everyone was getting what they wanted out of this experience. Ethiopia is an adventurous country, but we always had comfortable accommodations often in an excellent location or with stunning views. Food was good with many options including a surprising Italian influence.

The pacing was perfect, we stayed busy with a variety of activities. For instance, instead of seeing all of the churches on one day they were split up with cultural activities. We did not move too often which helped acclimate to the altitude together with the delicious ginger tea. Abi had an in-depth knowledge of the history and culture, and was very willing to share his personal story. He was really good at getting the group to interact with each other and the locals. If you choose the trip, you will be lucky to have him as a guide.

For a cruise that began on Christmas Day, we had nothing but sunny weather. Local guides were excellent, as was the crew and food on the small 150-passenger ship Clio. Bravo!

But we were able to have unique experiences arranged for us, encounters with people and candid conversations about their national history and life with everyday people. The geography, urban and rural, was stunning. Our overall guide made every minute count and had everything arranged to a T. The local guides were fun and very informative. This was my 13 trip, Rwanda, and definitely, overall in my very top 3. Isaac our fearless leader was superb, even taking me to purchase wrist splits that I suddenly needed as I started my journey. I'm really glad I chose to arrive early. The impromptu stops he made happen were always engaging and fun. Unlike some guides, Isaac had the perfect balance of commentary and quiet time. I also liked the way he moved us around each day so we had the opportunity to eventually engage with everyone in our group. Isaac also changed vehicles throughout the day which was also appreciated.

Our drivers Philip and Thomas were second to none. They were our safari spotters, exceptional drivers, and always knowledgeable about whatever we asked. I went to Rwanda for the gorillas, but got so much more. The controversial topics were exceptional, the best of all my trips. What this country has accomplished after such a horrendous genocide, should be a master class for the world. Simply amazing. I can't recommend this trip enough!!!!

Special offers on their website make the trips reasonably priced. One pet peeve of mine is that the number of days includes travel to the start so on many trips, the touring really begins on day 3 and the last day is always a travel day home. Also, a lot of meals are not included and many days or parts of days are on you to figure out.

This review includes a trip to Jordan (pre-trip) followed by the highlight trip to Egypt. Overall the travel experience was very good. Our trip Leader in Jordan (Jafar) was excellent. The Jordan itinerary was also quite excellent. In Egypt our trip Leader (Hussien) was also excellent. The Egypt itinerary was also very excellent. The home meal experience in Jordan was slightly disappointing as the host family requested compensation after offering some home made wine before the meal. This host family also brought out a “Tip” bowl just prior to our departure. That to me is a “cold” experience. This is the first time we had encountered this situation. Most in the group were quite surprised and made the departure awkward.

Finally, my wife and I were disappointed to learn the couple we were traveling with from MCI would not accompany us on the same flights on the return trip from Cairo to MCI. We did travel together on the trip from MCI to Amman Jordan but not on the return trip. Our companions (Joe & Julia **) were arriving at MCI 1 1/2 hours earlier than our flight and we had one vehicle at the airport. OAT was aware that we requested to travel together. We have proof on our documents that OAT knew we were 4 travel companions. We called OAT and requested this to be corrected. We were told by OAT that “we” would have to purchase a “new” if we wanted to fly back on the same flights and arrive KC at the same time. We were told it was OUR responsibility.

THIS was VERY unfortunate and INCONVENIENT…. Especially when because of airport issues in Dallas/Ft Worth we did not fly in to MCI till the next day m. ** had to pay to spend the night in KANSAS City waiting for us to come in on our flight, because we had only one vehicle at the MCI airport. We can provide OAT with the documents of proof the it was requested that we fly together. We feel this was an OAT issue, NOT our fault and therefore NOT our responsibility to FIX and PAY for a new ticket after we already paid OAT for this planning if we wanted to fly together with our companions which “we recommended” to OAT for this trip, as this was their first experience/tour with OAT. 😕

The food was fabulous, and the lectures and activities on board kept us busy all day- if that's what one chose to do - including a polar plunge! A pool, hot tub, sauna, spa and gym, as well as 2 bars and a coffee shop offered more ways to keep busy. Decks on multiple levels allowed plenty of time to whale watch or simply enjoy the peacefulness of the glaciers and the sound of ice cracking. Simon, our tour guide, was outstanding in all aspects of guiding our 16-person tour group. We were able to experience and enjoy many cultural aspects of each location and even participate in some impromptu activities. All accommodations, transportation, meals, and activities were flawless. When previously unknown ceremonies were going to interfere with our visit to the Grand Palace, Simon was able to coordinate interchanging that visit with another activity on the following day.

The entire itinerary, from our airfare, and from our arrival in Bangkok to our departure from Hanoi, was meticulously laid out. Even roadside stops during our longer bus trips, to nature breaks at pre-selected "Happy Rooms" made the longer drives seem much, much shorter. From the popular sights like Angkor Wat, to the fun scooter ride through Saigon, to the meals during home visits, to the more serious Chu Chi Tunnels, to the very somber Killing Fields and Genocide Museum, to the Hero Rats, it is difficult to pick a favorite activity. The visits to the Black H'mong and Red Dzau villages were well done and extremely informative and enlightening. I would highly recommend OAT and especially Simon as your tour guide.

This trip exceeded all such possible expectations! The pre-trip alone to South Africa was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Guides Wesley and Adolph provided mind-blowing animal experiences. Glamping was a treat! Staff were so supportive and fun! Food is delicious! Add to that animals frequently passing the tent in their own special way of welcoming you.

Then, the camps in the other 3 countries added to this level of experience with new guides and new local interactions. Learning about the local cultures in school and village visits opened up the world to us in a most meaningful way. Everyone, everywhere is so willing to share their lives and thoughts with you. Camp staff are local and wonderful people. Food is gourmet level. Guides are amazingly skilled. Introduction to over 105 bird species; hippos; elephants; leopards; lions; cheetahs; bat eared foxes; mongoose; baboons (107 in a trip paraded past my tent); monkeys; rhinos; zebras, impalas; kudus and more in their own habitat is unforgettable. It's baby season and we saw baby everything. You will never forget the sight of a 2 day old baby impala running in the bush.

OAT continues to be an excellent value for the dollar compared to other companies. OAT is well-organized with support, communication and information from start to finish. The small group size enhances the pleasure of journey and the Trip Experience Leaders are top-notch. Individual needs such as food allergies are carefully attended to. The emphasis on learning and discovery for local cultures and realities makes these trips a significant cut above any "plastic", surface, drive-by trip you can take.

We recently returned from an amazing trip to Tanzania with an extension to Kenya. There were 10 of us in Kenya and 14 in Tanzania, ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to see and hear much better than in a larger group. What made this adventure amazing were the people who helped us along in our travels. Our tour leader, Godliving, and the extension leader, George, were phenomenal in sharing information about the land, fauna, flora and people who live there. They were transparent in their love of their countries and around the challenges faced.

We were able to talk with members of Maasai communities in both countries, then met with persons with Albinism, participated in making a water filter at WWEA, watched women weave palms on the side of the road, had a meal with a local family and visited a primary school in Tanzania and more. The cultural learning in which we engaged added great depth to our experience of these countries.

Along with our tour leaders, our drivers in each country added to our experience when on safari in particular. In Kenya this was Abdi and Bajay. In Tanzania we shared time with Frank, Cosmas and Shabani. Each of these individuals had sharp eyes and a great knowledge about the fauna and the people that we encountered. Perhaps because we spent more time with the latter three we got to know them better. Each provided us with vast amounts of information as well as sharing something about their lives along the way.

We were amazed at how they could spot animals at a distance or paw prints on the side of the road or pick out a carcass in a tree. We saw all of the big 5 between the two countries as well as so many other animals and birds. Sitting in the midst of Wildebeests stretching from horizon to horizon in Tanzania gave us a 3D experience of the enormity of the migration events. We are still smiling and recounting all of our adventures between us as well as with family and friends.

At some of the places we stayed there were some special staff members as well that seemed to go out of their way to ensure our stays were better than "good". In the Rustic Camp on the Serengeti the Chef was phenomenal and a staff person named Gift ensured a gluten free diet was available and delicious! At the Tloma Mountain Lodge it was Nyange who ensured the needed gluten free diet reached us. As well as generally being amazingly pleasant and helpful.

While all of this was fabulous, there were some glitches on the travel end. When the flight to leave was changed by the airline, 10 of us were told at the counter that we had cancelled our flight out of Kilimanjaro. It is a long way to and from Africa for us and the delays and errors such as the one mentioned were difficult. In all however, we will travel again with OAT given our in country (countries) experiences were top notch.

There may be spontaneous stops to experience a local market or festival. A Day in the Life provides an up close look at a local family business unique to the area. Groups are small. Pre trip and post trip add-ons are a great way to see and do more if your time and budget allow. OAT hires the best local guides available. Many have worked with OAT for over a decade. A South Pacific Odyssey: Australia & New Zealand was an exceptional and beautifully curated tour that delivered a memorable experience across both countries. The itinerary was thoughtfully designed, with the right amount of time in each location, allowing us to explore, learn, and appreciate the diversity of these two magnificent destinations.

Australia: The pacing and time allocated in each place were excellent, and most of the hotels were in fantastic, centrally located areas. The only disappointment was the camping site in the Northern Region of the Outback, which is in serious need of refurbishment. The chairs around the fire were old, dirty, and many were torn. Most tents did not have lights—only a few did—which made settling in at night a challenge. The toilets were much too far from the campsite, and the food served there was unfortunately very poor.

That said, Jason, our Outback guide, was outstanding—knowledgeable, engaging, and a true highlight of that portion of the journey. Additionally, the optional tours throughout Australia were excellent and added tremendous value.

New Zealand: The itinerary continued to shine here, with well-planned timing in each destination and all hotels offering comfortable accommodations. The only weak point was the breakfast at the hotel in Hokitika, which offered little variety, poor coffee, and a disappointing fruit plate. Beyond that, the optional tours in New Zealand were exceptional, and the customer service exceeded expectations.

What truly elevated this South Pacific Odyssey was the exceptional leadership of the Travel Experience Leaders:

Bec **, our TEL for Australia, was consistently accommodating, attentive, and thorough throughout the entire 17 days. She ensured everything ran smoothly, made everyone feel supported, and added warmth and professionalism to every moment.

Noeline (Noels) **, our TEL for New Zealand, was extraordinary in every possible way. We’re sorry to hear about the concerns you encountered, as this is not the experience we want for our travelers. The camp is located within the Chobe Forestry Reserve, a natural bush environment where wildlife activity can occur, though situations like this are not typical. We’ve reviewed this stay with our local partners, who have confirmed additional preventative measures ahead of reopening. We appreciate your feedback as we continue to improve future journeys.

I was more than delighted with my first O.A.T. trip. I traveled to Egypt and Jordan in November 2025. My guides were highly educated and knowledgable and so willing and eager to share their enthusiastic love for their countries. They made every part of the journey an exciting and educational adventure. O.A.T. made sure that every meal was prepared according to strict provisions so that no one got sick eating the wonderful variety of foods. The accommodations were luxurious and I didn't pay extra for a single supplement so I did not have to share my room.

The office staff were kind and helpful. They made custom flight reservations for me, including last minute flight changes. Unlike other tours, there were several home visits with local families. All of my fellow travellers were returning, appreciative & dedicated travelers who were devoted to to O.A.T. repeatedly emphasizing the trips offered by O.A.T. were the finest of all group travel experiences. I thought this would be my one and only big travel adventure, but now I am planning the next one! and I will definitely travel with O.A.T.

I have travelled with a number of other companies and have never had so many unique and interesting experiences in urban, village, and rural locations. With a small group, an excellent tour guide and knowledgeable local guides we were able to enjoy cultural, political, historical, dining, transportation, and adventurous experiences on the Ancient Kingdoms, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam tour of 20 days. Not every experience was comfortable, learning firsthand about the victims of the Vietnam war as well as the totalitarian regime of Pol Pot in Cambodia. In addition, we were able to see how OAT and Grand Circle Travel have enriched the residents of local villages with schools and other educational resources, clean water supplies, sanitation and other village enhancements.

My recent trip to Morocco with Overseas Adventure Travel was nothing short of transformational. Our Trip Leader, Aziz B., made the experience exceptional. His depth of knowledge, warmth, humor, transparency and pride in his country brought every moment to life. He is truly one of the best guides I’ve encountered anywhere in the world.

What made this journey stand out most was the profound cultural immersion. Spending time with a nomadic family and then with a local farming family—who work multiple jobs just to make ends meet—opened my eyes in ways I didn’t anticipate. These encounters were humbling, real, and deeply human. They reminded me of the resilience, generosity, and dignity that define everyday life in Morocco. The country itself is spectacular: the Medinas, the mosques, the artisans and their centuries-old crafts—all breathtaking. But beyond the beauty, my greatest takeaway was something far more meaningful.

Morocco is a powerful example of how Muslims, Jews, and Christians have lived together in peace for centuries. You feel this harmony everywhere—in conversations, traditions, neighborhoods, and the stories shared with pride. In a world that often focuses on division, witnessing this coexistence firsthand was inspiring and hopeful. If you’re considering this trip, go. And if you’re lucky enough to have Aziz as your leader, you’re in for an unforgettable experience.

The Sahara Desert Camp overnight, Camel Ride and climbing up the Sand Dunes was one of the highlights of our trip. Watching the sunset, gazing at the horizon over the Sahara Desert, created a calm peaceful feeling that was breathtaking.

Mohamed our Tour guide Director, was exceptional! He is so knowledgeable and personable. It takes a special talent to foster a strong sense of unity and connection among the group members. He served as the "glue" that brought everyone together, through shared experiences, engaging storytelling, and simply a warm and inclusive personality. I believe I accidentally deleted your survey. As I said I am not fond of homework. However, your trip was terrific. I enjoyed all aspects. Nyrille was absolutely phenomenal. She is an asset to your company. It is difficult trying to please everyone. I did have a conversation with her about my photography. I understand the majority rule as it should. However I know the countries I had the opportunity to visit have wonderful birds. In my opinion I was not given nearly enough time to photo birds. All of us wanted and did see a tremendous amount of animals, it was fantastic. However, I was only able to photo a few birds. I am very experienced with a camera and photographing birds would have not taken any longer than taking pictures of animals.

I was disappointed regarding the bird photography. As I said the pre trip was more than I ever expected. The camps were fine. My one complaint, admittedly I hate hot weather but certainly knew going to Africa it would be hot. I truly believe the camps could be more comfortable by at least having good fans. Example in one camp the ceiling fan was placed in the room not over the bed, it was useless. If going offer fans, as you should at least place them properly and have well made ones. The first camp ice was readily available the other two occasionally. In the extremely hot weather ice is almost an necessity. The food was fine in all three camps and the entire staff made you feel welcomed.

The other issue I had was the bugs were horrible in the first camp, I had hundreds, the other two camps were fine. The food was good in all camps which I appreciated, the staff ability to cook as well as making us feel comfortable. I also thought the school, community garden and family meal as well as the history of each country was not only educational but very heart felt. These people love their country, I found it very refreshing considering they have so little. We are very spoiled in US, and these activities sure put things in perspective, I personally thank you OATS for that opportunity.

Please allow me to state once again how articulate, knowledgeable, intelligent Nyrille is. There was an issue on our trip. She handled it professionally and explained to all why OATS decided to make their decision. In addition I had an issue, birds, and I admit I was somewhat rude. I did apologize and Nyrille very kindly accepted my apology, Prior to my retirement I was a banker, I would have wished all my employees were as good as she is. During our trip she constantly spoke about OATS and how happy she is to work for you and complemented your organization. As I have said she made the trip with all her skills and experience one I will never forget. Amelia

I traveled with Grand Circle in 2023 and had a very positive experience. However, when booking a trip with OAT, I was met with inconsistencies in what each rep was telling me. I was 'talked into' booking an extension to my trip, with the understanding that I could cancel at any time without penalties. Not true. What happened was that the nonrefundable portion of the trip insurance went up significantly, and when I was faced with having to cancel due to family illness and funding, I found myself 'out' over $1,000. The extension did cost me dearly in increased nonrefundable insurance costs (never explained to me) when having to cancel. Of course, I had the option to roll over the funds into a future trip with ever increasing trip costs. Be very wary of falling into the traps of early payments and trip extensions, unless you are very certain that you will be traveling and investing significant amounts of money into future travels with the company.

Around half of the trip was a disappointment. The arrival and first hotel stay and tour were excellent, other than the dinner restrictions: while a limited menu is understandable, when I asked for a second bottled water, I was told by the server "NO". Such limited restrictions became a common theme; throughout the tour, the very limited options showed that OAT paid the minimum amount for their profit margin. Much of the food was second-rate, and the servers were surly. In Zagreb, we were served a rich chocolate cake as dessert, yet would have had to pay for the typical coffee.

Most of the hotels were acceptable, but at the Farm experience, my traveling companion and I were given a tiny room with unacceptable beds. I am 6' 1", and my buddy is 6' 3", yet we were given two narrower-than-normal twin beds, with only 12" of space between them. Then we had to actually angle the two small beds away from the wall so we could open the bath door. While the transportation was stated in the itinerary, the bus rides were much longer than expected, spending 6 hours three times, 8 hours once, and 9 hours once; the description alluded to shorter time. Also, the repetitive nature of the War discussions and multiple war museums became tiresome; we fully understood "War bad, peace good, ethnic conflict."

Then there was our Tour Host. While she was moderately knowledgeable, as a student of history, when I asked further questions, I was either dismissed or told not relevant. Her abilities beyond the scripted descriptions was a disappointment. Then there was her general attitude, along with 2 of the local tour guides. They described how they let the macho males believe they were in charge, while stating that the women were the smart ones, actually in charge. That showed in her treatment of my friend and I; we were with 8 older females on the trip, and she didn't understand that we were sophisticated international travelers. On the way to Bosnia, she described the Muslim culture and the appropriate means of dealing with the locals.

When I asked about the common phrase "a sallam alikum," I was told it was inappropriate, and I would be laughed at. On the very contrary, whenever I used the phrase, I was greeted with delightful surprise and appreciation that I had bothered to understand their culture. Additionally, her need to always be right meant that we were corrected inappropriately multiple times. Her prejudice against males showed multiple times. My travelling buddy and I were going to use OAT for their Vietnam Immersion trip, however, after the mind-numbing long bus rides, the poor sleeping accommodations, and OAT's need to pay minimum food costs, not only would we not be using OAT again, as well as refer others away from OAT.

These were far from our first tours, which were taken with two other companies. Why did we switch to OAT? Simply put, OAT trips offer more than tours. A hallmark of traveling with OAT is the contact with locals in their own businesses and homes. These contacts offer you the chance to get to know the places you travel to through the eyes of local people, eat with them, and hear their candid views on a variety of issues. I have recently completed my 13th trip with OAT and had another wonderful unforgettable time. My latest trip was to Kenya and Tanzania. OAT's strength is that, along with the country's major attractions, you meet the people who call it home. You spend time in their schools, villages and homes. You talk to them about their experiences and come away with an understanding of what it's like to live there. The company is very responsive to traveler's input and will modify the schedule to improve the pacing and experience. The accommodations for this trip were very good, the food was abundant with plenty of choices and the pacing was just right. We went on many game drives and saw herds of zebras, cape buffalo, wildebeests, impalas, giraffes, rivers full of hippopotamuses. We saw large prides of lions and several cheetahs along with numerous different kinds of birds. Our guide was fantastic. He made sure everything ran smoothly and he was an expert on every kind of animal we saw. He facilitated our interactions with the local people and made sure our accommodations and meals were just right. I would not hesitate to recommend this company. The groups are relatively small and that leads to a much more personal experence. I have been on "Big Bus" tours with up to 50 people. OAT is infinitely superior.

The rain came only briefly early AM and late PM. Never got wet. Every day was a new discovery/adventure. In Bangkok touring the flower market, Grand Palace, watching a colorful performance of classical dance at their national theatre and watching the activities at Bangkok floating market. Next stop, walking on the bridge on the River Kwai. Followed by walk to the memorial of the allied soldiers during the war who were forced to build the train tracks. A sad experience. Next day a time to get wet learning to harvest chestnut and trying to free oneself from the mud. Days that followed included visited to a historic park that a ruins of when Thailand had a kingdom.

A visit to an orphanage and hearing the history of the children were moving moments for the members of our trip. Time to get wet again bathing with an elephant. A visit and talk with the female members of the Karen Long Neck tribe. (Rings are their collars.) Visits to the white/blue temples were like visit to a set of the next Star War's movie. She not only led the group, she shared her personal experiences growing up in Japan and gave us insights into the culture that you could get no other way.

We traveled from Tokyo to Hakone to Kanazawa to Kyoto and finally Hiroshima. Each location exposed a different facet of Japan. I thought the balance between structured guide-led touring and free time was perfect. OAT opened the door to interactive experiences that would be difficult to impossible to achieve touring on your own. Especially the home visit, where we were invited into the home of a local resident, to share our life at home with our Japanese hosts and learn about their daily life in Japan. We also were given the golden opportunity to have a private meeting with an A-bomb survivor in Hiroshima. We listened to her story of surviving the devastation in Hiroshima and her message of peace to carry home.

Over the course of the entire trip we were exposed to every mode of transportation and a wide variety of Japanese food. All of it excellent. Our visit to a Gokayama mountaintop village took us back 300 years and give us insights into Japanese culture that were golden. We have just returned from another wonderful travel experience with OAT. We had a trip leader who took great care of everyone in our small group and was passionate in sharing about the people, culture, politics and religion of his country. The different cities and towns we visited provided a wide variety of experiences and included times spent with a number of local families from different backgrounds. Accommodations and food reflected the local culture and was all excellent. It was a rich experience of sights and sounds from the modern city of Casablanca, to the new port in Tangier, to the narrow alleys of Fez, to camel rides in the Sahara Desert, and snake charmers in Marrakech and many more places in between.

I am writing this review regarding our recent experience on The Morocco Sahara Odyssey tour. Our experience with the staff at O.A.T. from the beginning and throughout our trip planning was exceptional. All of our questions were answered and the detailed "Trip Planner" could not have been improved as provided. The tour guides, Mohamed **, our initial contact and guide for our "Pre-Tour and "Base Tour", was an excellent communicator throughout our time with him. He took care of every detail and was always available for our every concern, and questions. He is a very patient, professional and passionate guide. So willing to share his knowledge of his country. He set a very high "bar" for our tour guide expectations, and we were never disappointed by him.

Our experience with our "Tour Extension" guide, Abdou **, provided us just what we needed, as we were entering the final phase of our journey. A little slower pace, and much needed time to prepare for our return home. He was very sensitive to our every concerns and was very knowledgeable of the remaining sights we toured until the end. Not to mention, making sure we all got to the airport on time for our flights back home. "Job well done Abdou."

I gave a "4" Stars for the trip, only because I felt that some attention needs to be given to the maintenance needed for the 2 night Sahara Desert portion of our trip, and possible change of the places we were experiencing for overnight stays. I believe our guides were made aware of any comments of issues with these locations. Thank you again for making this much desired trip made possible for us.

This is my first and last trip with OAT in Brazil. OAT has a good reputation, but our experience was not consistent with what I’ve heard. One of the scheduled activities was to do a motorcycle Uber ride in Rio de Janeiro. There was no vetting of the drivers and my driver was jumping off curbs and weaving between traffic going into head on traffic and then went between cars. When leaving between cars, the car in front backed up into us and crushed us. The tour guide did an incident report that I was hit by a car while on the motorcycle.

OAT never even followed up with me. I still have a painful knot on my shin months later, probably chipped the bone. The other comment I have is that drinks are not included at most meals. Unusual for tours I’ve been on. The hotels were fairly modest and our shower did not work on the boat. I heard from other people on the trip that this was not as good as other OAT trips that they’ve taken. I suggest people don’t use OAT for Brazil.

My trip to Mongolia ,terrible guide then OA trip leader said our flight to Gobi Desert was going to be by bus, not plane. OAT claimed the plane had broken down in South Africa. Back in the USA, one rep broke the news that OAT had forgotten to book the plane. How unethical to lie to 16 customers about their, OAT mistake. I told them I didn't believe their story on a broken plane and was asked not to take any more trips.

I did the Tuscany and Umbria trip in Oct 2025. Great balance of planned activities and explore on your own. Also, focus is on lesser-traveled areas and "Day in the Life" of the countries, so you get a better feel for how the local people actually live. The food was excellent, and the hotels ranged from good to great. The bus was comfortable as well. With a small group of 16, it wasn't too overwhelming, and gave you a chance to know some fellow travellers. Our guide was top-notch as well. I have done a total of 23 trips overseas, but this was my first with OAT. It was among the best trips I have ever taken!

We were so fortunate to be able to see quite a lot of lions, as well as a cheetah and a leopard. On past safaris I had just seen a hyena running in the distance. This time we saw hyenas in their den, gorging on a kill, and sleeping off their big meal. We even saw a wild dog running off.

I recently returned from Jewels of Bohemia with a post trip to Vienna. I generally love OAT trips because of the knowledge of the trip leaders for each city as part of the itinerary. OAT is also the only game in town for no single supplement which makes it my #1 travel group. HOWEVER, as OAT continues to become more successful and grow, they may be slacking on the training and supervision process for new trip leaders. The trip leader for our base trip had recently completed her training with OAT and had shadowed this trip ONLY ONE TIME and otherwise had NO experience with OAT.

SHAME ON OAT! This was a huge disservice to the novice guide and a disappointment for the trip travelers. As someone who has successfully trained and supervised hundreds of young people, I would NEVER "not observe" a new trainee at least several times before letting them fly solo. My experience on the Jewels trip was subpar. It makes me worried about being in this position in future trips. OAT needs to put more emphasis in training their new trip leaders and local guides, necessary to maintain the excellence I have experienced in 9 trips.

I just returned from the best trip of my lifetime -- the Saharan Odyssey venture in Morocco (Sep 2025). There was no question that Zaid (our incredible guide!) could not answer! His passion for traveling and love of his native country was palpable. And his command of the English language, to include idiomatic expressions, was truly amazing, especially considering his humble beginnings. I started out thinking primarily about all the SHOPPING I was going to do. But by the end, all I cared about was learning more about those wonderful people from all ends of the spectrum. We broke bread with Nomads, farmers, and one chance encounter with a beautiful family residing in a home constructed of cardboard and plastic. They shared all they had with us in their impeccably clean abode despite a moment's notice.

One of the upper-end shopkeepers that we met said it beautifully: We do not judge people by their religion, but by their BEHAVIOR. Having lived in Saudi Arabia for many years, I was surprised to experience a Muslim country where religions co-exist, women can enter mosques/drive/work, couples can hold hands in public, etc. (acknowledging that things have changed greatly for the better there since I left Saudi in 2001.) Truly the trip of a lifetime!! Thank you, Zaid, for making it happen!!

This trip to Ireland was my 5th OAT trip and had all the positives of my previous experiences that keep bringing me back. First, the exceptional Trip Guides--each has been superlative--conveying their deep love of their country as well as deep knowledge of its history and geography, and awareness of its challenges and controversies past and present.

The consistently excellent components of OAT trips have been 1) the small group size (never more than 16) 2) clear guidelines about level of activity/level of ability required; 3) willingness to set the expectations for timeliness and activity levels and keep to them so the group experience isn't compromised; 4) absolutely top notch, best-in-the-business tour leaders living in the area; (5) experiences in local eateries and experiences unavailable to larger groups; (6)Controversial Conversations--hearing from individuals who have been on different sides explaining their thinking then and now; (7) home-hosted meal and day-in-the-life of a resident with deep local roots.

And all of this is accomplished with seamless attention to transport, baggage, reservations and all the logistics. Additionally the tour leader is aware of and seamlessly attentive to individual needs that arise in ways that promote comfortable camaraderie among our diverse group without favoritism. And best of all, there is always emphasis on having a great time, which was made even more fun by the great sense of humor of our trip leader Tom in Ireland. Laughing and learning together with good people, in beautiful settings, without concern for the logistics--a great trip, adventure, and vacation that checks off all the boxes!

We’re sorry your return was delayed. To clarify the record: the disruption stemmed from a lost passport at Frankfurt, which prevented check-in and—under airline policy—led the airline to cancel the original tickets. O.A.T. did not cancel your flights. While replacement tickets were ultimately purchased directly, we extended a $1,000 goodwill credit even though this circumstance isn’t covered by the travel protection you held (lost travel documents are typically excluded by insurers).

Our trip to Sicily was delightful, largely because of OAT’s meticulous planning and our Trip Experience Leader Gaetano **’s knowledge of each day’s sites and of each person’s particular needs to enjoy these sites. I was not aware of Sicily’s multicultural history, and I enjoyed learning more about its role in World War II. (I did not know that after WWII, some wanted Italy to be America’s 51st state.) Gaetano arranged for expert speakers, even a volcanologist, to address us about everything from an ancient earthquake to the Mafia to Mount Etna. My favorite was riding in a Fiat 500 in Modica down a mountainside, which reminded me of scenes from a European movie. Speaking of, the Greco-Roman amphitheater in Taormina and its stunning view of the Mediterranean coast serves as the setting for a season of HBO’s “The White Lotus.” If you feel like you’re in a movie, you’re probably not dreaming. In addition, she was fun and created a family out of 14 people from all over, which made the trip even more enjoyable. Every day was another learning experience with great information from the Irish people themselves— a demonstration of shepherding, weaving, an apple farm and its products, a deep dive in Belfast and Derry with people from all sides of the past conflicts. We visited ancient sites and were provided the deep history of those sites, as well as actually visiting a folk village demonstrating how the Irish lived in more recent historical times.

We also had our own performances of Irish step dancing, as well as of traditional music, with explanations of each and how they developed. The ability to learn so much, and not just visit and look at famous locations and monuments, is what makes the OAT experience different and special. My most recent trip was Brazil in Depth. We saw the major sites in Rio, but also spent time talking to residents of two favelas. In Brasilia we saw all the impressive modern public buildings, but also saw the "superblocks" where people live their lives.

We explored the rivers in the Amazon and Pantanal to see animals and birds in their habitats, but also visited remote villages where we met the residents and learned about their way of life and how they managed living in such isolated places. This was not a trip for someone who wants nothing more that to check off the famous sights, although it does do that. The most spectacular trip I have ever been on is the OAT Irish Adventure: Dublin, Belfast & the Northwest Counties with the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands pre-trip extension! What makes OAT special is the small group size limit of 16 which allows for adventures in out of the way places that can only accommodate small groups. Our very knowledgeable and experienced leader, Cian, proudly and enthusiastically took us to see Cyndi the weaver in a small, thatched cottage where she demonstrated intricate weaving on her 150-year-old loom. We visited Tom and his sheepdog, Rock, who skillfully demonstrated herding sheep. At a family cider farm Danny entertained us as he showed us the cider making process.

Cian and driver, Kevin, spotted cows on the beach for a quick photo stop, and took us to see the beautiful, lush green of Ireland. Favorite spots were the Giant's Causeway and the Cliffs of Moher. We were immersed in local experiences like the Irish dancers and the home hosted visits. We also got a picture of the history of the troubles in Belfast with a black taxi ride and a discussion with men of three different sides of the conflict. Our very nice hotels were located in town centers so we could explore on our free time with ease. OAT does a great job organizing trips with attention to detail. Trip leaders work hard to make your trip requests happen. Cian surprised us with treats and unexpected overlook views and stops along the way. Kevin surprised us with a beautiful solo in a small church along the way.

In Scotland, our trip experience leader, Robin, shared his knowledge and experiences of his country. Highlights were seeing the Kelpies horse sculptures, the medieval Stirling Castle, and the National Monument featured in the film Braveheart. A favorite was walking along the banks of the River Tay to see the 600-year-old Birnam Oak tree forest setting from Shakespeare's play, MacBeth. After the Dalwhinnie Distillery tour, Robin and driver, Kevin, took us to an alpaca farm where we got a up close fun experience with alpacas and highland cows. Robin arranged for us to visit Blair Castle and we got to see the bagpiper there. Robin had a gift to help us see the country through his eyes, to experience probably the best shortbread in Scotland, and to contribute our small group's cohesiveness, full of fun and laughter! We usually travel independently in Europe or on Oceania or Viking but decided to try OAT for a trip to Rio/Amazon/Pantanal. It was the worst trip ever. We actually returned 5 days before the trip concluded because we couldn't imagine continuing. The tours were so dull, for example, in Manasus our guide took us through a fruit and fish market and then through souvenir shops and in Brasilia we actually spent upwards of an hour looking at a middle class unremarkable condo and then interviewing the condo security guard about his low Brazilian pay which was embarrassing. Accommodations onboard the Amazon ship were cramped, food sparse, and bird watching itinerary became quite repetitive after multiple trips.

Our Rio hotel was advertised as being on Copacabana beach but our balcony faced a brick wall. Lots of 6 am departures to locations with little of interest. Tour guides idea of helpful remarks was to caution us to limit our water intake as bathrooms were unavailable on nature hikes. I calculated we paid almost twice as much to travel with OAT than if we had booked our tour independently. So disappointed.

Here are the pros and cons of OAT, in my opinion, after 7 trips: Pros: no single supplement on land trips; small group (16 max) on land trips; universally outstanding trip experience leaders; great interaction with local people and culture; “off the beaten path” activities as well as must-see sites; hotels are usually well-located; almost all tips are included; returning traveler credits are excellent and special prices are often available close to departure dates. Cons: OAT-offered trip insurance is very expensive; having OATs reserve airfare doesn’t work for me since it’s not ticketed until 45 days or so before departure. Features that vary by trip: hotels are generally good but quality can vary; focus on local food means there may be little variety; on some trips little food choice is offered. In summary, as a single traveler OAT is my go-to tour operator. It’s not perfect but it’s the best I’ve found within a reasonable price range.

This trip, Idyllic Great Britain, was perhaps the best of the many OAT trips I've taken. The fact that there were only six in the group was an added plus; I was amazed that OAT hadn't cancelled with so few registered, but it was in keeping with OAT's focus on small groups. Our tour leader was excellent and handled any blip - such as a big windstorm, making our scheduled ferry trip from the isle of Orkney impossible. All the local guides were excellent, with high points being a talk with a builder of stone walls and a day on a farm. I will highly recommend this tour.

I loved that our travel group was small and that we stayed in places that were NOT as touristy. The opportunities to explore on our own as well as visit planned sites was really a plus. The cultural immersion and opportunity to experience the day in the life of locals was a special feature. Accommodations were comfortable and conveniently located. I had a wonderful trip, as a solo female traveler. Marko, my trip leader was great. From being picked up at the airport, baggage in every room and all the little things oat does to make a seamless trip. Started in Croatia ended in Greece, land and sea, the home hosted visit, the day in the life, the national park in Croatia, too many wonderful memories. My trip leader, Marko and the staff on our small boat were amazing. The last day I asked to do something that isn’t on the OAT books and bungee jumped off the Corinthian canal. Nance my trip leader made it happen. The period to the end of my trip. I forgot to talk about the food, this was a food cooking tour. The ladies in Croatia should be on every tour cooking or not, they taught us how to make sthol. Great vacation!

We were so considered prior to our arrival then upon landing, we were taken care of from the beginning to the end of our experience in Iceland. Our trip leader was the best ever experienced who was really so wonderfully charming , so much fun and truly steeped in the Icelandic culture, which she lovingly shared during for our entire journey. Our introduction to this amazing country was full of joyful moments, outrageous vistas, authentic musical moments, tours of villages, towns and the capital city, visiting museums, and cultural places. We learned about and rode the unique and beautiful Icelandic horses..

The people attending to us made us feel right at home, treated us so sweetly and made the most delicious food while entertaining us with songs from ancient times. Planting a Baby Larch tree in the countryside was a moving moment for me.!! Our hike through ancient Lava fields and Black Ice was exhilarating. It was raining, cold and challenging yet we all loved it and had a Vodka toast together! Then just before flying home we bathed in the Blue Lagoon Glacial waters! This was our 8th trip with OAT and we look forward to our next Adventure in the very near future.

Simply one of the best led, organized and interesting OAT adventures we have been on. From the very experienced senior guides, Martin and Gabby, the addition of Lorena from the South American office of OAT, to the organized and spontaneous activities, the spectacular scenery, the local villages and the more than comfortable accommodations, this is an experience well worth pursuing. Highlights for us included a very personal discussion re: the "disappeared" in Argentina, going to a Melonga club, the High Altitude Museum, cooking experiences, visiting the Cerro Negro community, hands on experiences with ceramics and trying to find rather obscure items in a central market. We were fortunate enough to experience several holiday festivities involving parades, ceremonies, music and street dancing. And once again, all of the meals were excellent, showcasing local foods.

As we've mentioned in the past, however, for senior citizens there's an over-abundance of food at most meals which results in a lot of food not eaten and wasted. Some thought needs to be given to a proviso of some sort for selecting smaller portions if desired. There's so much more that could be shared including how friendly the Argentinians and Chileans are and how safe we felt walking around Buenos Aires and Santiago on our own. Just a super adventure! One concern we do have and it occurred for the first time on our 2024 trip and again on this most recent trip: the presence of travelers who have been on 25+ OAT adventures. The first experience we just chalked up to "luck of the draw". But with the second occurrence, it seems more problematic.

Here's the issue as we experienced it: both of these individuals were traveling alone and throughout the trip acted almost like a junior trip leader. Frequently interjecting during talks/presentations about their experiences on other trips or how things were handled differently; they often talked about how they were "consulted" by OAT since they were so experienced and how they interacted with OAT management and were privy to OAT's inside operations and upcoming new adventures. A little bit of this might be understandable, but both of these individuals were over the top and often annoying. OAT needs to consider how they involve these travelers and to insure they understand they are not adjunct trip leaders and should not be involved in any aspect other than as travelers like the rest of us.

I have not even started my tour yet, and I am disappointed! It was never disclosed that baggage fees were not included with the price of the airline. I opted to have them make my flight reservations because the agent said it is seamless and better than making my own. After I received my itinerary, I called Customer Service, the agent was rude and disrespectful. She said I should’ve read the travel booklet. However, at the time of booking, it was over the phone, and I never received anything in writing that would have told me my baggage fees of $100 were not included! I was on the phone with Customer Service for over 30 minutes. The customer service agent was not knowledgeable and was rude and did not even attempt to make it right. This is not starting on the right foot but hopefully my October 17 Pura Vida trip will change my review. Stay tuned.

The well planned days allowed several activities in the same day, which would have been very difficult to plan on our own. Meeting local families & how they lived was also a great experience.

Three girlfriends and I joined the Overseas Adventure Travel group to Croatia for 18 days. I liked the somewhat relaxing schedule, guided tours mixing with optional tours and self-guided ventures. I also enjoyed the immersion of local cultural interactions and people from each city we visited.. The food was 3 star, but our tour guide, Zoran, was 5 star! Additionally, our group of 16 meshed really well and friendships were formed.

I would give a 0.5 star rating for the air travel from the US to Croatia. My friends and I were on a flight that was severely delayed, thus connecting flights were missed. From the time we learned that the delay would cause us to miss our connection to actual arrival in Dubrovnik, the customer service folks from OAT provided zero assistance. We had to figure out our next flights and hope that we would be met by OAT transportation upon arrival in Dubrovnik, 24 hours later than anticipated. I will book my own airfare in the future.

No matter where we went my trip leader would ask someone a question and they would gladly show us their bows or explain how the arrows worked. Or explain the game of knuckle bones. Women participated in horseback riding and archery. It seemed that they were treated with a great deal of respect and so were we.

I felt like they were honored to have me in their house and every place we went told me the story of their lives and how they got to where they were in how important their culture was. I have never been so touched and amazed by people. Forget the two humped camel ride, horseback ride, motorbike ride on the lake, excellent food, all of which were excellent, but the people every one of them made this trip work. Our trip leader was so patient and helpful and answered any of our questions. I have never enjoyed a trip more. I got very, very sick all night on the dinner the tour provided at the Scandic Kiruna hotel. It was chicken!! There also should be more meal options provided on the tour and I think it can be done without raising prices. I think there should have been one more major city included in the base trip such as Stockholm or Oslo or replace Helsinki with Stockholm or Oslo since there wasn't much to experience in Helsinki. In addition the individual guides in each location were ok except for the one in the Vik village on fishing. His powerpoint didn't work and he was limited in his presentation. Also the hair dryers in the Thon hotels did not work...They would overheat and die!!

I’ve just returned from my 10th O.A.T. trip, and it was another excellent one—the Baltic Capitals. It was a blend of historic sites, including difficult Nazi and Soviet ones, and delightful experiences like walks in the Old Towns, nature hikes, and centuries-old architecture. The leader, Marius, was attentive to everyone and always patient and good-natured. The hotels were comfortable and well-placed in quiet locations near the Old Town in each city.

Food was usually good and sometimes excellent. Free beer or wine with most lunches and dinners. I always like how leaders encourage people to go their own way if they want; I did that for a few half days and found very rewarding things to do. One was an afternoon nap, as this trip was pretty tiring for me, walking 3-6 miles a day, often on cobblestones. I suggest half-boots, and do carry water each day. Past trips I have particularly enjoyed are Morocco, Adriatic, Bohemia, Loire Valley France, and southern Spain. But every trip has been worthwhile, memorable, and enjoyable. I highly recommend O.A.T.!

Our small group of 8 women was very well taken care of by our tour leader Nino. He was engaging, personable, knowledgeable and very considerate of individual needs within the group. All of the hotels we stayed in were very well located with easy access to all there was to see in each town. The opportunities to interact with local people through a Day in the Life/cooking classes etc is invaluable. I really have no suggestions for improvement.

Highlights included surfing in Lima, horseback riding, Via Ferrata (climb 1,000 feet, 6 zip lines down), hot springs, climbing Huayna Picchu and exploring Cusco’s unique neighborhoods.

This tour was excellent, as was the pretrip to Scotland. The itineraries, which were followed conscientiously, balanced the must-see places with formal (guides, OAT materials, events) and informal information (discussions, conversations) about the history, culture, daily and varied experiences of the Irish and Scottish. Our guides were absolutely excellent in their own ways and essential to the trip experience. OAT does an excellent job selecting and communicating with their trip experience leaders in my opinion. We appreciated the guides' use of WhatsApp for daily schedules, clarifications, and ongoing communications. I like that they leave the WhatsApp group up for after trip communications. Our guide and answers to most logistical questions were just a WhatsApp message away, most hours of the day.

I took advantage of most of the optional trips, which were well worth the cost and time away from other available sites. The home visit in Ireland was very interesting and we appreciated being matched with a family whose interests were similar to ours. They were enthusiastic OAT supporters which I have heard on other trips.

Some other activities are worthy of note. On the Scottish pretrip we had a walk/talk with an experienced arborist who shared a history of forestry in Scotland, showed us native and trees imported to Scotland from US, and even took us to the 600 year old Birnam Wood. Historic conflicts was a theme throughout both pretrip and regular trip, which left us with a much richer understanding of the these two island nations.

On the Black taxi tour, in the discussion at the Felon's Club in Belfast, and in the Museum of Free Derry tour we heard first hand accounts from some who have been active over time in moving beyond The Troubles. A local professor joined us for the two days in Derry to further elaborate our understanding. I recommend this trip and the pretrip for those interested in going beyond seeing beautiful countrysides and old buildings (of which there are plenty), to better understanding the history and culture of these countries and maybe even something about conflicts that plague societies and nations today.

The only difficulty was the rapid cable car ascent on the first day in Chamonix when we’d not sufficiently acclimated to the elevation gain and the temperature drop. Thankfully, on the main trip, our TEL did direct me to free time hiking options; not so much on the Post Trip. I’d recommend messaging the Sir Edmund Hillary connection to the first Winter Olympics alpinist gold medalists. I’d also recommend overhauling the TEL scripts. I asked specifically for insights into back stories on cultural icons. On my “pre-trip in Finland” for example, a local guide introduced us to why the music of Sibelius moved her. I’m now hooked/launched on a new learning curve/adventure because of her. Or, to put it in Hillary’s words “It is not mountains we conquer, but ourselves.”

Very active trip with 2 castle hikes on cobblestones, national park hike on Plivice lakes to view waterfalls, cave walk, and many other very long walks. Averaged 5 miles a day. Do not take this trip if you have any type of walking problems. You must be fit. Good itinerary but needed an additional day in Optijia with is a beautiful resort area - a welcome respite. Several very long bus rides which were made tolerable by our guide who provided a lot of information. Again, and maybe the straw that broke this camel's back, are the poor hotel accommodations.

In Zagreb we stayed at Best Western which was the most horrible experience of the trip. We were told by our guide not to expect a view. OMG my room faced a wall with a ledge that was littered with cigarettes butts. The room was dirty and approximately 9 x 11 feet. Pipes broke and I had to be re-roomed after unpacking and my shower. The second room was approximately 8 x 8 feet but had a window looking out on the back pf the hotel. Do not take this thrip unless they change that hotel. Substandard rooms. It ruined my entire perception of Zagreb which is recovering from an earthquake. Many buildings are closed or under reparation.

Pre trip to Albania was worth it. This fascinating country deserves its own trip itinerary as we only stayed in 2 locations. The Sarajevo stop in Bosnia Herzogovina was the best. We never got to Mostar because of a road accident that required a detour. I would have liked to spend more time in this country. Several of the cities that we visited have opera and concert halls. Our guide helped us to find a Jazz club in Zagreb and a concert performance in Ljubljana. The latter was excellent.

Going to non tourist locales gave us the opportunity to mix with locals. Information about such locations and events, particularly musical, should be included in the trip information. Most of the included meals were quite poor in quality. This was the same problem that we encountered, off the ship, on my last trip - a boat trip around Sicily. So my complaints about poor hotel accommodations and poor food on my last trip were ignored. OAT just won't upgrade these. One friend refuses to go on another OAT trip. So I can't recommend this tour to friends and family.

The tour covered a lot of ground in the country, covering farm life, the fishing life, the waterfalls, glaciers, birds, geysers, volcano craters, tectonic plate riffs, lakes, and the two largest cities.

On our Galapagos/Machu Picchu tour, the land tour experience was beyond our expectations. The guides/leaders were all experienced, patient and thorough. That being said, our experience working with their accounting and scheduling departments have been total disasters. Billings, credits and communications have been confusing and frustrating. Letters we received telling us our vacation insurance was cancelled and when we called, we were told it was a known problem. Funny, no one told us. Credits received for overbilling and then rebilled and telling us we had to pay the balance immediately. We will not go on another OAT tour again.

We have traveled with OAT on 13 trips, to all corners of the Earth, and love the experiences. We are retirees who enjoy traveling with like-minded people who are physically active, curious about other cultures, and want to do more than just sightseeing. We enjoy OAT's cultural immersion, and being in a small group (8-16) where you get to know everyone else. And OAT is philanthropic, so on each tour we visit schools or local facilities that OAT has financially supported. Our favorite OAT trips: Tuscany/Umbria, France, Morocco, Ancient Kingdoms, Iceland, Japan.

We had no idea we were about to experience the trip of a lifetime until we started traveling with Overseas Adventure Travel’s trip leader, Annanciata (Anna). From the moment she greeted us at the airport with her smiling face and provided clear guidance on what to expect as we transitioned to the other side of the globe, she was amazing. Her extensive knowledge of all things Africa, combined with empathy for the diverse needs of our group, ensured that we were constantly learning and experiencing our new adventure with a sense of curiosity and enthusiasm, both individually and collectively.

If you want to see the “Big 5,” meet locals in their community, or enjoy delicious food in beautiful outdoor settings, this is the trip for you. We went to see the wildlife and came away with meaningful friendships and a deeper appreciation for African culture, grounded in meeting people where they are, discovering our shared hopes and dreams, and valuing our differences.

To summarize up front, This was a well-designed and spectacularly-led tour that enabled us to experience the history and culture behind the leading sights of Sicily. To substantiate the credibility of our critique which follows, I need to say that my wife and I are very experienced global travelers. I have visited over 73 countries (some many times over) for both work and recreational tourism. This was my 13th trip to Italy and 4th visit to Sicily but my first trip using Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT). Specifics Reviewed:

Planning: OAT does an excellent job detailing and elaborating their itineraries. Even better, the Itinerary was executed very effectively over the course of the trip. Post initial booking… preparations and planning were simplified with continual updates by both the OAT staff and as the time for departure neared… by communications with the onsite Tour Leader. I was very impressed by the manner in which the tour leader sought out our motivations and interests in signing up for this particular journey and more so, how she used this information to personalize aspects of the journey for individual travelers.

Group Leadership: Our Tour Leader (Viviana **), a native Sicilian, communicated flawlessly in conversation and in writing. She continually anticipated the needs of our group and more importantly… the individual needs of our members. She was extraordinary well-prepared, sincere, kind and effective. Without hesitation, we assert that Viviana was the best guide or tour leader we have ever experienced in all of our years of travel. We now have signed up for another OAT Journey and are hopeful that the tour leader can be half as effective as Vivana. As I said, the tour was very well designed, but the great success of its execution lies with the actions and insights of the Tour Leader.

Events & Activities: We really enjoyed the cultural emphasis of the Tour Design. We got to meet and seriously interact with Sicilians which brought “color” and “life” to the sight-seeing aspects of the journey. Vivianna continually added surprise activities or events, never allowing a dull moment. Nonetheless, sufficient free time was allowed to enable group members to go out on their own and focus on personal interests.

Meals: Lunches and dinners that were provided were well conceived to provide a good sampling of the tastes of Sicily. Food and wine were plentiful… perhaps too plentiful! Lodging was generally OK, but in a few locales, we would have happily paid for an upgrade. Logistics & transportation: Very well designed. Luggage was flawlessly picked up and delivered at all sites. Buses were generally roomy and comfortable. Overall, this was very well done and meticulously overseen by our Tour leader.

Conclusions: My wife and I have travelled for the most part on our own without groups. We were more than pleasantly surprised…indeed impressed by how well this small group trip went and how many new/novel things we saw and did versus our prior three independent trips to Sicily. We, therefore, highly recommend this trip, without hesitation… and must add that if are going to Sicily, you should ask for Viviana!

This trip far exceeded my expectations. From the ship to the superior trip leader to the incredible places we visited, I could not have expected anything better than this voyage. I went to places I never thought I would see, especially Algeria. The history of Malta and Gibraltar; the exotic market places and fortifications of Morocco and Tunisia; and the glory of Malaga, Valencia and especially Barcelona made the trip. But our tour leader, Adane was more than a treat. He did everything for us, many times over and above what was expected including getting an authentic Berber shirt! He is a treasure for OAT. There is much more I could add, but suffice it to say, everyone should join OAT and take this trip!

Further, he schooled us on how to handle the markets, pointing out the best places to purchase and how to avoid getting hassled by the competition. The civilization speaks for itself. Incredible. And the locals we engaged with were friendly and informative. Lastly, the group of travelers were so much fun to be with, many having traveled extensively with O.A.T. In April 2025, OAT changed the starting date of our two week Egypt trip from October 20, 2025 to November 1, 2025. OAT claimed the reason was "an issue with our ship." Hard to believe they couldn't find a way to fix, repair, or find a substitute vessel for our trip. I suspect OAT did not have a sufficient number of paying customers to make the trip profitable for OAT, so they simply decided to combine two different trips, although this is not something I can prove. I had already paid for partially-refundable air travel to and from Egypt from the U.S.A, so I lost $3400 from the $12,000 that I paid the airlines for two tickets. OAT refused to reimburse me for the $3400 the airlines kept when I cancelled the flights. OAT offered me a $1000 credit on future travel....LOL!!!

Thus, I cancelled the OAT trip on April 18. The OAT customer service person that handled the OAT cancellation indicated I would receive my refund (mid-four figures) within 30 days. I called after 20 days to learn when I should expect the refund. The OAT customer service person said they have 30 days to complete refunds and that I should not expect the refund any sooner. Well, it's been 30 days and still no refund; therefore, I called OAT today and was put in a hold queue by OAT's telephone system...for 30 minutes. While continuing to hold on my phone, I called on my wife's phone and within 3 minutes, Briana answered (still no human on my phone).

I explained the refund scenario to Briana, who put me on hold. Approximately 5 minutes later, she indicated that my refund had been approved, but had not been processed back to my bank's account, claiming they were short staffed and COULD NOT PROVIDE ANY TIME FRAME FOR WHEN OAT WOULD ACTUALLY PROCESS THE REFUND TRANSACTION.

In an attempt to get an actual time frame, I asked Briana to speak to her superiors. She put me on hold again. She apologized when she returned and said she was unable to provide any concrete info regarding my refund time frame, but said she sent an e-mail to "finance" and would get back to me on Tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath. This issue will be sent to the Texas Attorneys General. In addition, I will add this complaint to every social media website I am associated with, along with the BBB.

The philosophy of OAT is "Learning and discovery". In this trip we were able to take care of sled dogs, meet with a therapist who uses animals in her practice, toured the largest iron ore mine in the world and spoke with an employee of an oil rig to discuss how Norway strives to become fossil-fuel-free country while drilling for oil. OAT provides an immersive experience and opportunity to understand the people and values of the country we visit.

I recently returned from the Ultimate Africa Tour guided by our TEL, Fortune **, and I can honestly say it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. Each game drive felt like a scene from a documentary, with Fortune’s expert guidance making the experience even more thrilling and informative.

Our camps were nothing short of fabulous — comfortable, and perfectly situated. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, offering amenities and an authentic connection to the landscape around us. It was glamping at its finest! I also fell in love with African sunsets! And the food… Wow. Every meal was a culinary delight, with fresh, local ingredients and flavors that reflected the richness of African culture in the perfect open-air settings. It was impossible to pick a favorite dish — everything was just that good!

The staff truly made the trip exceptional. Warm, attentive, and friendly, they went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcome, safe, and cared for throughout the journey. If you’re thinking about exploring Africa, do not hesitate — this tour is the real deal. Fortune and all involved deliver an experience that’s not just a vacation, but a powerful and lasting memory.

The itinerary allowed us to see all the temples, tombs and pyramids at times when other groups were not overwhelming our experience. The hotels were fabulous and historic. The cultural experiences, home-hosted meals, livestock market, spice market and other shopping options were terrific. The small group (16) allowed for more detailed information about temples, hieroglyphics, history, etc. The dahabeah was a wonderful experience--5 days floating on the Nile. For my trip to India, OAT recommended booking an additional day at the arriving hotel, so that I can recover after a very long flight and 10 hours time difference. OAT scheduled both the flight and the hotel, which I paid in full. When I arrived to the hotel in Delhi in the middle of the night, I was informed that the OAT room reservation will only be available at noon. So, instead of resting after the long flight, I had to wait in the lobby for hours. After complaining to customer service, OAT has never bothered to reply. Although I enjoyed the trip itself, I will not travel with OAT anymore.

From the moment I arrived late at night to the Hanoi airport, anxious and scanning my notes for the liaison to escort me to the Old Quarter, I could never have imagined that the kind smile that greeted me would belong to none other than my Trip Experience Leader himself, Tuan (Tom) **. That moment set the tone for what would become one of the most memorable and enriching journeys of my life.

Tom is a rare soul—an incredibly gifted individual whose calm demeanor, gentle humor, and limitless patience shaped every day of our Vietnam adventure. Navigating a group of individuals you are unfamiliar is no small task, yet Tom made it feel effortless. Whether we were exploring the bustling streets of Hanoi/Saigon or the tranquil beauty of the Dalat, he created a space where we could be curious, brave, and truly present.

Tom transformed what could have been a logistical nightmare—crossing the famously chaotic streets of Vietnam—into a moment of empowerment. Under his guidance, I not only conquered my fears of dodging scooters, but found myself enjoying the thrill of riding through traffic on cyclos and motorcycles with a confidence I never thought I’d have.

But it was Tom’s deep connection with the Vietnamese people that left the most lasting impression. Watching him seamlessly engage with elderly villagers one moment and joyfully join a spontaneous game of kickball with children the next was deeply moving. Even the unexpected—bureaucratic hiccups or sudden changes—were handled with such grace and diplomacy that our group was barely aware of the complexities being managed behind the scenes.

By the end of the trip, it became a running joke among us that if a river blocked our way, Tom could part the waters for us. And honestly, we meant it. I had booked my own airfare and was the last of our group to depart from Vietnam by several hours, yet Tom remained behind doing work in the OAT Saigon office and came back to the hotel — something the company didn't expect or require him to do -- yet he did it -- and even took me to eat at his favorite noodle restaurant during a thunderstorm before seeing me off! To anyone considering traveling to Vietnam I am telling them to go with OAT. Go with open eyes and an open heart. But most importantly, go with one of their Trip Experience Leaders—because if you’re lucky enough to be paired with someone like Tom, your trip will not just be a tour. It will be the reward of a lifetime.
