We have traveled with OAT previously and have found their trips to be wonderful. However, we booked a trip to Japan for April 2020 which was cancelled by them due to Covid19. Not a problem. Although we had purchased trip insurance, we are told we cannot get a refund, only a voucher. We are both in our 70s and even though the voucher is good for awhile, we are not sure we will be traveling internationally in the near future. So be very careful in booking, knowing that even with trip insurance you will not receive a refund even when THEY cancelled the trip.

We have traveled with OAT 11 times. If I can help it, there will be no 12th. We had a trip to Japan scheduled, and paid for, in late March. The trip was obviously canceled. I asked for a refund of the $7800 and was assured I would receive it. I called five (5) times from March 20th to April 20 to check and was told initially we would receive a refund in 7-10 days, then 1-2 weeks, then 1-2 months, then 2-3 months, then on 4-20 it was "several more weeks" and I asked to talk to a Supervisor. Seven days later on 4-27 a Supervisor called to tell me OAT was not giving any refunds due to a 'Policy Change' on March 23rd. Why all the lies?? I could reschedule another trip and apply the funds towards that if I liked. I need the money NOW not let OAT have it for another year + and pay even more.
Do not book with this company, as I am advising all my travel companions-some who have traveled with OAT 18 or more times. OAT is cutting its own throat by treating all its most valued customers like dirt. Financial problems are one thing, total unscrupulous behavior is another. Contact your lawyer, and/or MA Better Business Bureau & MA Attorney General.

Overseas Adventure Travel cancelled our trip to Italy/Sicily which was to depart on May 17, 2020 in mid March. They refuse to give us our money back although their website all through February and March stated we had the option of a full cash refund or a rebooking. On April 1 they "updated" their policy on their website to say they were rebooking all trips. They rebooked our trip to 2021 even though we requested a full refund. They did this without any consultation with us. We never heard from them until we filed a complaint with the Massachusetts Better Business Bureau, and then only to again tell us there will be no refund. We also contacted the Massachusetts Attorney General's office who reviewed our complaint and told us we were eligible for their assistance.
In addition, we are disputing the charges on our credit card for services never delivered. I do not understand how this can possibly be legal to refuse to refund money to customers who have received no services??? We invested $20,000 in what was to be a "trip of a lifetime" for us. It has become a "nightmare" of a lifetime because of their unethical, disgraceful business practices. Anyone else having the same problem I would definitely recommend contacting the BBB, the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office and disputing charges if you put the charges on your credit card. You certainly won't get any help from OAT. I just hope someone helps me.

Like other recent posts we booked a trip that has been canceled. When it was canceled, OAT website specifically said not to contact them. They would contact us, in order of trip departure date, to discuss rebooking of refund. Now their retroactive policy is no refunds and we are rebooked, without our consent, to 2021. We have not accepted this and are still requesting a refund. Complaints to BBB of Boston, the Massachusetts Attorney General and disputed charge to our credit card company is where we are now. OAT is not being fair and equitable to their clients. The second time we refused the rebooking, we were offered a free pre or post trip, a $1600 value. Those that have accepted the rebooking the first time, oh well, I guess they are out of luck. Maybe the third time they'll offer free airfare.

I had a trip to northern Italy booked for April 2020. OAT cancelled and on March 6, promised a full refund. I have the email that explains that the refund will be 'processed' after April 12 and may take 7-10 business days. Today (April23) I called since I haven't received promised refund and was told that they've changed the policy and aren't giving refunds, only vouchers for future trips. So I'm out over $8000??? They didn't even have the courtesy to notify me of supposed policy change. So disappointed in this company and will NEVER use again.

The facts are undisputed. OAT admits them. In late 2019 I booked and paid for a two-week trip to Mongolia slated for July 2020. It was expensive. It was to include airfare, hotels, and travel insurance among other things. In February 2020, OAT cancelled the trip ostensibly due to the coronavirus pandemic. Understandable. They said they would return all my money, but needed until April 5th because they were inundated with returns and everyone was working from home. Meanwhile the travel insurance company Allianz said I could only get my refund through OAT, so I couldn't even get a partial refund that way. Okay... I didn't receive my refund from OAT by the 5th, gave them 10 additional days, and called them to follow up on April 15th. They admitted they hadn't even processed my return and couldn't tell me when or even if they would.
Meanwhile, I could use that money for completely unanticipated expenses due to the virus myself and this is causing me unnecessary delays in some of my expenses, too. I'm afraid OAT is filing for bankruptcy (though I don't know that for a fact) and have been ripped off for an embarrassingly large sum. One thing's for sure; they aren't candid or honest with their paying customers from my experience. I recommend avoiding them for your trips.

We paid for an advance reservation a year ago. Due to the Corona Virus they cancelled our trip. However, they called it a "postponement". They arbitrarily rebooked us on the trip for 2021 without our consent. When we asked for a refund they said they would not do it and said we should be happy with the $500 credit (that would be 1% per year return) they offer for our trouble. They said many others are happy with that arrangement. It doesn't appear that way based on the reviews! They've had our $23,000 for a year and now want to keep it for another year. Do they really think it will be safe to travel to South Africa in May of 2021? The experts predict it will be 12 to 18 months before a vaccine is even available. We strongly recommend you do not put any money down with this company. They are not reliable!

Booked trip to Greece and Turkey for April 3-29. OAT canceled because of covid-19, promised a refund, and then reneged, saying they were re-booking for next year. I complained to them and they refused to refund. Then I complained to Boston Better Business Bureau and Massachusetts Attorney General. OAT is violating Mass. law that requires a tour operator who cancels a trip to advise traveler of their right to full refund and to give the refund within 30 days if traveler requests it. Citation is 940 Mass. Reg. 15.06. Google it. You can file complaints with both Better Business Bureau and Mass. Attorney General online. I got my refund within a week of filing both complaints, after multiple denials by OAT.

I would give less than one star if possible. OAT cancelled my trip with my daughter (spend was 7K) due to pandemic (totally understandable) and offered me a full 100% refund (great). We spoke on the phone and they followed up with a written confirmation via email. BUT then, they withdrew their offer, said the trip was not "cancelled" but "postponed" and my money was now put toward a trip next year. UNACCEPTABLE (and possibly illegal?) to do a bait and switch after confirming in writing a refund offer.
I lost my job and am a single mother of 4. This was a grad gift and I now cannot afford to forgo the refund that was PROMISED. In addition, the extra hotels and the airfare that I purchased on my own (not thru OAT) was fully refunded by those vendors. I cannot imagine that OAT did not receive any refund from the trip that was cancelled from their own vendors given their years in the industry. For them to not pass along the refunds to their customers is extremely disconcerting to say the least. For them to renege on their PROMISE of a refund to me is unethical. NEVER AGAIN OAT.

My husband and booked a trip to China for May 2020 to China which was cancelled due the Covid 19. We rebooked another trip to the Balkans for May. We bought the insurance for two people -1500. We were told on three occasions to wait for OAT to cancel in order to get a full refund. The trip was cancelled last week. The company now tells us that they have changed their policy regarding refunds and will only credit us for a similar trip that we do not want. We want no more trips from OAT. We want our money back - in excess of $15,000. I call this practice unethical. We don't want their service and they are keeping our money. We are engaging a lawyer.

OAT has a policy of accepting pre-registrations for future tours that aren't yet listed on their website. According to conversations with OAT reps and the confirmation e-mail I received, these deposits are fully refundable ("no risk" is specifically communicated). I cancelled my pre-registration when future travel became speculative due to Covid-19 and was told a refund of my 'no risk' deposit would be forthcoming promptly.
Five weeks later, I still don't have a refund and nobody at OAT can tell me why. In fact, they specifically indicate that the change in policy (from refunds to travel credits) mentioned by other disgruntled customers on this site does NOT apply since pending reservations are always fully refundable. OAT is not the type of tour operator that should play games with customer deposits - particularly those that are fully refundable and committed to in writing. I won't travel with them in the future because I simply can't trust them to follow through on their commitments or policies.

Regarding OAT no single supplement policy. This is really a scam. They claim to have no single supplement, but then offer couples a $1500. to $2000. credit to book a trip. They offer singles nothing. This in effect charges singles a premium to travel. If there really was a no single supplement, they would offer singles 1/2 of the couples credit. Am I the only one to figure this out. OAT charges a single supplement. They are depending on the stupidity of clients to not figure out their shell game.

Our $20,000 trip was cancelled due to C-19. Initially assured a refund to be paid in May, now no refund. Offered vouchers for a trip next year, but it seems to us that plans for a future trip overseas must be dependent on the availability of a vaccine. I checked with two other travel companies we frequently travel with - Wilderness Travel and Rick Steves. Their policies to this date offer full refunds. Disappointed in OAT.

We had booked our 6th trip with OAT, for this summer. In Feb. OAT cancelled the trip due to Covid-19 with a follow up email stating we could get a full refund. Now they are reneging, saying they can legally keep our money--basically an interest free loan to them--and they are no longer granting the refunds they had promised, stating that our money can only be used towards a future trip. On Mar 11, 2020 OAT cancelled my trip to Vietnam (Mar 10 to Apr 4, 2020) and on Mar. 13 OAT cancelled my Italy trip (May 5 to May 28, 2020). Combined cost of these 2 trips is $17,450. OAT told me I would get a refund but when refund (Visa credit) didn't show up in 2 weeks I called and was told OAT changed their refund policy and were applying it retroactively so I would only get VOUCHERS. I already had deposits on trips in Oct 2020, Jan 2021 and Mar 2021. OAT would not allow me to use vouchers on these trips. Must use vouchers on a NEW booking and vouchers expire 12/31/2021. Since I had already had 2 trips booked in 2021 I had no intention of booking additional trips. Combined my husband and I have given OAT/GCT more than $326,528 for 55 trips since 2006. Until this happened I never had a problem with OAT and highly recommended them to friends and family. NO MORE. STAY AWAY FROM OAT.

We were book on trip for Greece leaving March 21 with a group of 9. We were informed, understandable that they cancelled the trip! We had insurance but when they cancelled they offered us full refund but have since decided to change their policy and went ahead and said we have to rebook on another trip. When we asked what change they said, "Our policy" which they said they have the right to do at any time. We asked when and they said last Thursday. 12 days after they said that they would gives us a refund. They then also want to charge us for any changes with potential increase and decide when we can go. After our previous trip I thought they were trustworthy. DO NOT BELIEVE THEM! Since we had to cancel our insurance after what they said initially we have no way of getting our money back. Buyer beware with OAT!!??

I have taken several OAT trips and was overall pleased with the experience. Based on that, I convinced several of my friends to sign up for a trip to Israel/Jordan for next April. At the time we signed up I informed the agent that there would be 7 of us. They had not yet assigned the dates for 2020, so we made a deposit to get an early notice of the trip. They did not inform me that I needed to create a group number to ensure that we all were included on the same date. When notified we called to reserve for the April 12 trip. When one couple, called a day after notified, they were informed that the trip was full.
Not sure what the purpose of informing the agent that we wanted to go together. Obviously the training is deficient. They would not add a couple to the April 12 trip. Nor do they take names down in case of cancellations. We are terribly disappointed that they could not find a way to accommodate us. A well run travel agency would find a way to get us taken care of, even if it called for them to contact someone already in the April 12 time frame and offer them a credit to change their date. Too much to expect from OAT. Just sorry, you did not sign up as a group. Will seriously reconsider doing OAT again.

Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), is a travel company that caters to adults over 50. I have gone on 6 trips with them and have paid for another one this summer. My husband and I had planned to travel to China and Tibet with OAT on March 23, 2020. Bad timing! OAT, understandably, cancelled the trip but refunded our insurance premium, flight and trip costs, and upon receiving our receipts, will refund the China Visa application fees we had incurred. In addition, they have offered us $500 discount each on any trip we sign up for in 2020. Our trip to China was a last minute deal and they will give us the same price if we book the trip in 2020. Until we know that COVID19 has been contained, we are not likely to take them up on the last offer, but the how they have handled the rest of the cancellation truly reflects excellent customer service!
I have found the places we have stayed in all over the world to be better than any we could afford on our own: palaces in India and 5 star hotels in Morocco, for example. Their guides are excellent and always attentive to the group's needs. The company keeps to their number of 16 people for their trips so we get a lot of attention and it is easier to get into places as a smaller group. Grand Circle, the parent company, does take more people, but I am addressing OAT. I highly recommend OAT and often do to our friends!

We have done 9 trips with OAT and most of them have been very enjoyable. Their air department has gotten better over the years, but we find using miles to be best. You would think that after 9 trips we would get better rooms as has been mentioned in other reviews, but this is often not the case. We were in a coffin like room in Porto and a room with no heat and hot water in Patagonia. The trip leader did not believe me after my cold shower until they checked out the room. This is my major complaint. OAT is very affordable and if you book with them do not expect anything over a 3 star hotel or the worst rooms in a 4 star.
Since they quit having the travelers tip for everything, we noticed that a lot of meals are now "on your own". We think using OAT for exotic destinations, i.e. Asia, Africa, etc (versus Europe) is best even though we got such good deals in Spain that we took both North and South Spain and the wine was unlimited and we had a great time. We agree with other reviews, do NOT buy their insurance. Use the Chase Sapphire card's insurance and buy supplemental evac when in Africa.

I was logging on to get the link the the OAT site to book a trip for next year and spotted this review site. SO sorry for the folks who have had a bad experience but need to say we've done 5 trips and every one of them has been outstanding. And the service complaints, wow, we've had great help from these guys. On virtually all our trips we've done some self hosted travel on either or both ends, and OAT has been able to make that work out much more economically than I could trying to stitch together the flights myself. OAT tends to provide experiences outside the normal travel agency, small groups, run by local folks, spending quality time with local folks. They have a nice balance of independent time on the trip with help sorting out what makes sense for you and your interests, abilities, and physical limitations. At this point I'd have to say I would not want to travel with any other travel company. 5 stars in my book.

As I am about to take my 13th trip with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) I am astounded by the number of whiny comments that seem to make OAT look like a bunch of boogers looking for any means possible to ruin one's travel plans. Come on folks, if OAT were that bad a travel company, how on earth could they have remained in business for this long a period?
Understanding that nobody or no company can be perfect, I have had NOTHING but excellent experiences during my SOON TO BE 13 TRIPS. OAT's team leaders are uniformly superb in their knowledge of their respective tour areas and all have exceptional communications skills. The trips are designed TO BE ADVENTUROUS, so if you're counting coup on whether your hotel is five stars or whether your fellow traveler has a two vanity bathroom and you don't, YOU'VE MISSED THE WHOLE POINT OF THEIR TOURS!! Perhaps you'd be better off with a Viking tour that costs twice as much or even a National Geographic Tour where you'll pay three or four times with the guarantee that they'll tuck you in and kiss your behind each and every night.
As for me, I'm a big boy and can handle the reality that a person who has traveled 43 times with OAT (yes, I actually did meet one of these folks) might and should get a bit better room than I. And as for travel insurance, I'm 71 and all I really need is airvac insurance that one purchases for a fraction of the price for a whole year. And air travel: hell I've been flying now for 51 years and have learned to take nothing for granted.
But OAT brings the richest of travel EXPERIENCES! From having mint tea in a Bedouin's camel hair tent, to cooking your own veal marsala in Sicily, to eating Mopani worms in a mud hut in Zimbabwe, it's all an adventure that one remembers for lifetime. If I wanted everything to be perfectly ordered and planned I'd stay home and be bored: get my drift??

I have traveled with OAT almost every year since my first trip to Thailand in 2000. I have seen parts of the world that I would never have seen otherwise. A visit to an: orphanage, school, and a home hosted meal are standard for all of my trips....wonderful experiences that I would never have had without OAT. Ever been to the snake charmers village in India or a Masai village? The trip leaders are all local people that know their countries and are very willing to share their political / cultural insights, priceless.
Our trip leader Nelson in Patagonia made the comment that in his view there are two kinds of visitor to his country: (1) Tourists and (2) Travelers. OAT is for World Travelers and not tourists. World travelers can expect bumps in the road. It's just life. It's how well your trip leader copes with the unexpected that makes OAT a great way to see the world. OAT is not for everyone...some would like the Club-Med experience at the higher cost? Your choice, but mine will always be with OAT.

I made the mistake of telling our tour leader that my husband had early stage Alzheimer's. Her immediate reaction was to say that OAT policy was to send people with this disease home if they were traveling alone -- he CLEARLY wasn't. She warned me that he would be my responsibility (which I already knew) and then suggested that it would be better for us to go home and she could arrange that. I thought this might be my husband's last chance to travel so I told her we would not go home. Throughout the trip, she harassed me, telling me every time I let him do something wrong, like accidentally pick up and eat someone else's box lunch - a mistake I could easily have made. He also "wandered" once when we got off a bus for a bathroom bank.
If wandering is looking around before you go in the bathroom, then I'm guilty and I bet a lot of other people are as well. To make matters worse, when I filled in the post-trip survey, I expressed my unhappiness with our treatment, I received a form letter that said they would work on the itinerary. In fact, I applauded the itinerary. The sad thing is that the trip would have been spectacular if I hadn't been so stressed about our tour guide, who seemed to be looking for mistakes. Fortunately, my husband had a wonderful trip because I didn't tell him what was going on behind the scenes AND I am certainly not aware of any hardship for our tour leader or for the other travelers.

I had to fill out all the information that OAT already had and submit it to a totally unaffiliated website. I got NO HELP from OAT. In addition, and as a warning, I booked this same trip a year ago and after paying in full and getting confirmed, I was "bumped off" less than 60 days from my departure date. No reason was given. Sicily’s Ancient Landscapes & Timeless Traditions is my first trip to join OAT. On Day 3, our tour’s first real start date, I was surprised that despite having 1 whole day in Palermo and walking around for about 4-5 hours, we didn’t go inside any of the top attractions in Palermo, like Cappella Palatina/Palazzo Reale, etc., except for the Cathedral.
As such, on Day 4, I have decided to stay in Palermo, instead of joining the optional tour. On Day 5, the itinerary states that we are going to Segesta which mentions the 424 B.C. Doric temple which is the one and only attraction in the area. But guess what, we actually did not go there, but saw the temple a few kilometers away! For Syracuse, the tour does not go to the most important tourist site of Parco Archeologico della Neapolis (which includes Teatro Greco and Latomia del Paradiso/Ear of Dionysius). And even for Mt. Etna, the tour just stays on the lower part (1,900 meters) where no entrance fee is needed and does not go up to the top (2,920 meters) which is the real attraction, by taking the cable car and then the 4WD minibus.
In addition, we have this hypocritical guide – Viviana **! Having joined OAT the first time, I naturally asked Viviana why we didn’t visit these top sites. She then became so defensive and even retorted why I did not tell her beforehand when we were in Segesta that I would like to see the Doric Temple as she would have directed me to go on my own (as some other people in her previous tours did).
So on Day 8, I knew better and asked her if I could go to Archeologico della Neapolis on my own when we reach Syracuse. Again, she became so defensive and to make the story short, the next morning, she told me that I will be “dismissed” from our tour immediately as I was “spreading among my tourmates that this tour is bad”. Frankly, I was relieved - I ended up seeing much more places and top sites on my own in the remaining 7 days, (like in Mt Etna, I went to the top which you would know once you were up there that there is really not much to see below) but spent only less than 1/3 of what OAT refunded to me proportionately!
If you just want to go to Sicily so that you can say that you have been there, then this tour can be for you. Otherwise, if you want to see the real thing, this tour wastes a lot of your time (and money too) by having lots of cheap fillers - so-called cultural and local experiences, without going to the real top interesting sites, or in some cases, the tour might go, but you only get to see them from the outside or from a distance! What is the point?

I have taken 10+ OAT trips and have been generally happy but have a few suggestions for those who are new to OAT:
1. I book ground only and make my own air reservations. The same goes for any pre- or post- stops. I keep the OAT reservation as simple as possible.
2. I have separate medical evacuation insurance and don't buy their insurance. (But note that evacuation insurance only covers mishaps during the trip, not before leaving.)
3. When getting on the phone with their rep I make these things clear right off the bat and cut off their sales attempts.
4. If I'm traveling with a friend we agree on a time and have the OAT rep conference in the other person. The single supps go very quickly and there is no guarantee that a space will be available even an hour later. So definitely book at the same time.
5. Particularly if you're interested in a free single supp, be aware that new trip dates are posted as earlier dates fill up, so keep checking. I'm going on the Prague trip in October and just noticed that a new date with 2 single supps has appeared.
6. The tour managers I've had have ranged from good to excellent and have generally found them to be hard working and helpful. When you buy into a group trip you give up a certain amount of independence and simply have to accept that. Also, the group leaders are not responsible for the reservation process or other policies coming out of the Boston HQ, but frequently bear the brunt of traveler complaints.
7. Many of the hotel have been very good, especially in Europe, but quite a few have left much to be desired either because they were shabby and badly in need of renovation or because they were poorly located. It's true that travelers with the most seniority get the best rooms, but this is no different than airlines giving upgrades to their best customers. As you take more trips you move up in the pecking order and also accumulate credits that can be applied to future trips.
I continue to travel with OAT because overall I'm satisfied.

I didn't keep track of all the iterations so the below is essentially a sampling of my frustration. Representatives presented themselves as knowledgeable but the information provided was simply wrong. In particular, they really have no clue about how upgrades work. We were upgrading our coach seats to business for the Africa safari trip. There was great initial confusion on the part of OAT about what could be upgraded, and for what cost. We were simply given incorrect information and ended up paying $600 more per person than promised. Still worth it to us. But the upgrade didn't include one of the 6 flight legs, a long one, for some reason.
i) "It will be done as soon as departure is within 3 months." (Nope.)
ii) "We'll take care of it as soon as the seats are released to us, when we're within 3 months." (Nope--never heard from OAT about this.)
iii) "The airline will upgrade some legs on a complimentary basis." (Really? When has an airline ever done this--and they didn't, of course.)
iv) "Call the airline." (And the airline of course won't touch these since they're through a travel agency.)
All the while listening to the same hold music with each painful OAT "hold". I think the representatives are happy to get you off the phone and move on to their next satisfied customer rather than bothering to know what they're talking about and actually solving a problem realistically. Dealing with their air desk is supposed to make the flight portion of the trip easy--not even close. With this experience and according to the other reviews, OAT may be losing some pretty frequent and relatively high-end travelers (such as ourselves).

Unethical pricing. We received a brochure for a 21 day tour of Africa. After waiting for an hour on the phone, my wife was ready to give the credit card information. The woman reviewed everything and stated it was a 13 day tour. My wife said it was a 21 day tour according to the brochure. The woman conferred with someone and then told us it was a marketing error and that it was really only 13 days. We'll never travel with OAT again.

Air France could not provide me with a seat in premium economy on the return trip. I submitted all paperwork less than a week after my return to be reimbursed for the premium economy surcharge for that leg of the trip. Despite numerous calls to OAT I have not received any refund as of April 2019, over one year later. I have been continually lied to by customer service people at OAT. The bottom line is, DO NOT take a trip with this tour company. They have zero credibility and the worst customer service of any company I have dealt with.

Phone issue was same problem then, "we are in process of training....". prior to that, in 2016, took their trip to Nepal -- 12 hours nonstop in an incredibly cramped United Air flight (had I known, I would have booked myself on a more customer focused airline. We were planning on taking our 1st OAT trip this August to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos. I booked in on November 27th, 2018. OAT booked our flight incorrectly, TWICE. They booked it a day too late. The error was not caught until last week, five months later. To change the flight, it would cost us $500.00. OAT acknowledged it was their fault, a Supervisor said, and I quote, 'it was human error. The 2 people involved will be reprimanded. It will be a good learning experience for our staff and for the company.'
They adamantly refused to absorb the $500 for the 'correct' flight, the flight we were supposed to be on a day earlier, even though it was their booking mistake! I have 2 e mails and a letter that was mailed just last week with the incorrect dates! So their fault, they admitted it and they are not willing to 'do the right thing' for their customer. I asked to speak with a manager, and they refused. I have never, in all my years had a company refuse to rectify their mistake. Terrible customer relations, terrible customer service, hold time was over 10 minutes, inexperience young adults that take sales calls for OAT from home!
They have been nothing short of unprofessional, unwilling to take the proper steps to rectify their errors. Their young and inexperienced employees get a lesson in booking the proper air travel dates and MY EXPENSE! Thanks OAT. Thanks for ruining my vacation. Lucky for us, there are many companies out there that will be greatful to have our business. They get an absolute -0- in our book.

I have traveled many times with this company, therefore I am sometimes given very good rooms in hotels. It always bothers me to hear people complain about the frequent travelers getting upgrades. Today Most US companies give their frequent customers perks. My grocery store gives me sale prices if I show them my frequent shopper cards. Airlines give their good customers early boarding, and sometimes reduced baggage fees. Hotels sometime give you a free stay after several visits, even Amazon has perks. Think about this before you complain about it. I always let them book my air and then I change or upgrade my seat. They have also changes routing if I requested.
My final comment about these reviews. Why do so many refer to the company as OATs when it is OAT. I am suspicious about these reviews. As for customer service, I’ve not had problems but many companies I deal with have phone waiting time. Also OAT always books my air, and I monitor it. You can make your own seat upgrades after, I do have a problem with the reviews, The call the company OATS but it is OAT. Why are there so many poor reviews with the wrong company name. Were they really written by the travelers.

During my current trip I learned about OAT's "caste system" for assigning rooms. The most loyal travelers (think cumulative spending of $100k or more) are given seriously upgraded rooms. There may be some ranking on spending after that, but I couldn't tell based on my two trips. Next are couples, friends traveling together in solo rooms and finally lone solos.
As the lone solo on the Backroads of Iberia tour, I was routinely assigned to rooms I considered substandard. Sometimes I was on a different floor or wing. While others spoke of their views and even patios, my views were of dark interior shafts, service areas, a busy street and walls. None had much natural light. Looking at the evacuation floor plans posted in every room confirmed mine were among the smallest and least desirable in the hotel. What a shame, since the focus of this tour was on the historic Pousada and Parador hotels.
My friends who have extensive experience with OAT confirmed this is their business model. I don't begrudge others their upgraded rooms. But if I want to travel with OAT again I needed to find a solution to feeling like a 3rd class citizen. And I may have found one. In the last hotel of the trip, I had a room which required keeping closed drapes for privacy, thus zero natural light. As I was not feeling well and spending lots of time in the room I followed one friend's advice. I upgraded myself. It was 25 Euros a night, but I went from a dungeon to a sun filled room with a view. Wish I had done this all along.
So now I know the score with OAT room policies. No point in complaining about it. I will set aside some extra money and choose if and when and I want to use it to improve my experience. It's like a single supplement, but one that I control. PS - Do tell your guide in advance if you do the same. I didn't and my took it as a criticism of her leadership.

I arrived last night at the airport and learned they had changed my flight date by one day later however I was not notified. Evidently, during the “administrative audit” saw we did not want an extra day in Hanoi so changed my flight by one day. I was told that they had called (numbers were verified) but I did not receive call. To me, this just verified what I had read and will no longer use them for airline reservations.
When I returned home and wanted to reverify later in the evening I was SHOCKED to get an answering service. The gentleman who answered to transfer to the service was very rude! In fact she alone spoilt the whole trip due to her lack of leadership and other problems too long to write about. Upon returning home, I filled out the survey and wrote a letter to Harriet Lewis. Someone from her office called and we played telephone tag for a couple of weeks. We finally spoke and she solicited more comments regarding my survey results and letter. Indeed, they seemed more than willing to accommodate our interest in synching this trip with our plan to see our daughter in Aix en PROVENCE in May. And then it all fell apart!
In late Feb. 2018 I called OAT to ask a few questions. After more 90 minutes on hold, I hung up and emailed their customer assistance address. The return email was an auto-generated reply that said this was a “no-reply” address. Huh? So, I kept calling and calling FOR 6 weeks, after which I tried their Marketing Manager and their Public Relations Office. The Marketing guy apologized profusely and said someone from travel bookings would call me. Or not as it turned out. I waited 3 days and called him back and said I wanted to cancel and to process a full refund. I also explained why, that this was by far the worst customer service I’d ever experienced.
By the way, each time I called I would listen to this pathetic refrain: “We apologize for any delays. We are installing a new phone system and it’s taking a bit longer than anticipated.” Except that, based on customer reviews going back more than 2 years, OAT had been making the longest communications upgrade ever! Bottom line issue seems to be that OAT will bend over backward in booking your trip, but then put you at the end of the response line for all subsequent communications. The single exception is if you are an OAT veteran traveler.

Just happened across this site and was very surprised by the negative reviews. We travel extensively but almost never with a company. That said, we've now done 3 OATS trips and I believe they were all exception. A major piece of each of those was their help with flights. Our trip to India we booked, but OATS actually coached us on what to get (ie got 0 for helping us but did). Last year OATS helped us craft a trip to S America, where we added days in Lima before the started the OATS tour and then a full 9 days we spent in Colombia, all booked through OATS who were able to book us cheaper and more efficiently than we were able to. Then this past summer we had a last minute trip we needed to schedule to Europe and I happened to call to see if they had something going on we could use to get us to Europe. They didn't but they had a trip on our list, Africa, that flew through Europe.
They were able to get us our flight to Europe cheaper than we could, albeit very late, AND add 2 weeks so we could do what we needed to in Europe, AND add 10 days on the way home in Atlanta, which allowed us to do a visit with my family on the way home. We got three trips and paid for flights for one. Sorry for these other folks but our experience has been great. BTW, my mom died while we were on the first part of this trip and the OATS folks were responsive. We ended up not changing our flights, other than staying in the south a week longer on the way back, but they were trying to help and gave us great advice. As a primarily independent traveler, I have nothing but respect for OATS. Great company.

Months after booking, I received a letter informing me that there were changes made to the itinerary. They removed a lot of the museums and excursions that were included in the price, without replacing any of these or reducing the price.
I booked my airfare with their travel department since I wanted to do a layover in Hong Kong. I paid for business class and all segments were booked in business. Then I get a phone call from the travel department (in October - the trip leaves 11/27/18) informing me that they made a mistake on the Hong Kong -Hanoi portion and had to change the flight to get me there earlier and with the other travelers. The travel agent neglected to inform me that I was now flying coach for this segment.
Called the company numerous times and was told that nothing could be done. I emailed corporate three times and have yet to hear back from them. Their customer services is horrible. As for the people who answer the phone to begin with, we've had nothing but excellent service, including making plane reservations. We live near RDU, and flights to other smallish airports, like Vilnius for example, can be hard to get right, but they've done a great job for us, including getting inexpensive upgrades for premium economy on Cathay Pacific for our flights to Asia. I think their trips, their planning, their service is first rate, and on the 7 trips we've taken there are many, many people who've traveled with them over and over, which is the best kind of "review."

I have just completed my fourth trip with OAT. Over a short period of three years I can see that the value for the dollar has decreased. Unless you are traveling as a single with no additional charge for a private room, you are supplementing the cost of those who are. This pricing scenario has to be covered by cheaper hotels and meals among other ways. I had a very bad experience on my last trip. I usually book my own airfare knowing my transfers to and from the airport are not included.
This was made quite clear when we were not permitted to accompany many of our fellow travelers on the bus to the airport even though there was plenty of extra room, and were told to take a taxi. I told them that Odysseys Unlimited, who we have traveled with many times, welcomes their valued customers to use the airport transportation if there is space available...at no charge! OAT's reply was, “Too bad we don't.” Maybe OAT should look at trying to offer a little more service to couples who are supplementing their "no single supplement" customers.

My husband and I have traveled with OAT 11 times. We love their tours- especially the small size and the superb guides. Their air service, however, is mediocre at best. We have just had a most unpleasant experience with them on our travel home from Australia. This trip, I think, is the first time we have used their service and I would hesitate before ever using their air service again. Below I highlight just two of our problems as a warning about OAT air service. Our poor opinion of OAT air service started months ago. I didn’t keep the details because I did not anticipate future problems. For some reason I called OAT air services and found out that the time had changed between our arrival in The United States and making a very tight departure home. The OAT person told me that if I wanted to keep abreast of these changes I needed to be in contact with the airline directly.
Our most serious complaint occurred when we were in Australia. A little over a week before our return flight, we received an email from our superb Australian guide saying there were issues with our flight. The message she sent on to us said the only flight available for us to get home on our booked date was an ECONOMY flight back that night even though we had booked BUSINESS class tickets. The Bangkok office which handled bookings was closed for the weekend and an extra day for a national holiday. Our guide then decided not to wait three days for making a change but worked with the home office in Australia and then a special contact in New York to rebook us on another BUSINESS flight home with a stop in Melbourne on the day we originally requested.
When I got home I wrote and talked to OAT. I learned most disturbing information. SEATS MAY BE AVAILABLE ON THE FLIGHT YOU WANT BUT OAT DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THESE SEATS. The carrier determines what access OAT has depending on OAT’s arrangement with the carrier. This also means that you can not get on the phone and deal directly with the airline; you must go thru OAT. There is more to this story; bottom line - Beware of unpleasant consequences if you book air travel with OAT.

They took care of our group of seniors to the utmost of their abilities. When I was struck with altitude sickness in Peru our guide could not have been more helpful. He did exactly what was necessary to get me the proper treatment so that I could recover quickly and rejoin the tour in less than a half hour.
On the Ecuador part, I became dehydrated. Once again, our guide made every effort to protect my well being by speaking to the locals, and finding a store that sold Gatorade, and he made sure I was prepared with it for the rest of the journey. We never felt that we were being coddled, we simply felt that the guides in both countries had our best interests, our health and safety at the top of their priorities. A couple of key pointers about my Peru Travel experience with OAT in late 2017: 1. They are quick to take your reservation but you will spend almost 2 hours on the phone waiting for OAT customer service at any point after giving them your money. Horrible customer service. Virtually no customer service provided since I'm sure so many give up trying to reach OAT after making a nonrefundable reservation deposit. 2. OAT on their website will delete or prohibit from publishing, truly useful mixed and negative reviews. Biased and sneaky. 3. They force you to eat with the group at expensive restaurants. If we didn't have to do this and if the trip was cut short by at least 2 days, the price would have been a bit more reasonable.
4. Above all, the tour guides make all the difference and unfortunately our guide Jose ** was more so an attention seeker and impatient with us older folks than a patient educator about Peru. He was more interested in showing off about his trials and tribulations in Peru than focusing on the history, facts and dynamics of the country and the broader population. I would request a different tour guide if you weirdly enough choose OAT for your Peru experience.

I have not yet gone on my trip, so I cannot offer a review in terms of actual travel and accommodations but I was deeply bothered by the misleading information I was given when making arrangements. When I booked my two trips, I wanted to include a visit (on my own) to Santiago. When I asked the rep (Sarah) how much this would cost, or if it would be extra she assured me it would most likely fit within the travel budget and wouldn't exceed the $1700 I was already paying for airfare. She said it "might" be a little extra... When I said, "Well I hope it won't be a lot," she assured me it would not be. She mentioned a small amount, and while I can't remember what exactly what that was, it was so minimal I told her to proceed.
She said she would have the back-to-back team give me a call. It turned out to cost $350 additional, plus another $85.00 for a hotel room (the latter of which is understandable because of the flight times). When I complained to an OAT rep, they reviewed "the tape" of our conversation and found (or claimed) she did not say these things. I told them there were three phone calls and it was one of the latter calls that we discussed this, but they refused to listen to the other tapes. In fairness to OAT, one of the reps did offer to apply a trip credit from the first trip towards the second - which helped take the sting off the additional fare. It's not a make or break thing for me but just want to warn you - ask specific questions, write down their answers and the DATE AND TIME of your call.

My friend and I had taken a trip with this company earlier this year and we were extremely satisfied. The process for registration was easy, all questions were answered, the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and professional, and the group had wonderful experiences. We therefore decided to take another one early next year. Again, the process for registering for this trip was wonderful. However, once our trip was booked, our experience with this company became totally different. We were no longer able to speak to an agent without waiting a minimum of 30+ minutes on hold. We were given different information about flights every time we finally did manage to speak to an agent. One agent said that we could get a direct flight home. Another agent told us they did not exist. We asked for business class seats. One agent told us they were not available. Another "managed" to get them for us.
I wrote an email with my concerns to the email addresses listed on their website, a week ago. I did not receive any response. I therefore sent the email again a few days ago. As yet, I have not received a response. I therefore called this morning. In order to bypass the 30+ minute wait, I called the number for new registrations and was immediately connected to an agent. I asked to be connected to a supervisor and she would not give me anyone's name, phone number or email address. She asked me to tell her and when I explained the issue her response was, "we don't monitor emails." I asked her for the name of someone in charge. She was either unable or unwilling to give me a name and said it was a team and the only way I could contact them was by regular mail. She either did not have or would not give me a phone number for them. Altogether, I felt her tone was curt and she was not at all helpful.

We have a trip to Cuba scheduled to leave Sept 29. With the destructive path of Irma we are concerned about whether the trip will go. All we get when we call is a standard reply. The trip leaving on Sept 19th was cancelled less than a week before departure. Complicating this is that we are residents of Fort Myers, FL and have no power. We need to be in FL repairing our homes and those of our friends. OAT will not return calls. If we cancel we lose our money. If we wait for them to make a decision it delays our return to FL to recover from Irma's damage.
Is this an indication of OAT service. How can they assure that we will be safe traveling in Cuba. We didn't sign up for a trip that has any chance of unnecessary risks. We have seen first hand the amount of resources needed to begin the clean up in Florida. Cannot imagine that by Sept 30th Havana will be safe for travel. In addition I learned yesterday that trips supported by the foundation can be more than the promised 20 people. Why are their group sizes for foundation trips different than their standard 12-16. Had we known the group would be larger we would have never signed up.
When I called the toll free number and was not satisfied with the response, I asked for a return call and have not had a response. I have never dealt with a travel organization that is so unwilling to answer questions in a timely manner. We have traveled with OAT before and expected better from them when dealing with natural disasters. To assure safety and allow travelers to make plans the late Sept tour to Cuba should be cancelled. If it is not cancelled travelers should be told what changes will need to be made and allowed to reschedule if not satisfied with the changes or apparent risks.

I traveled last spring with OAT to Central Europe. The travel guide was outstanding, attentive, smart and very competent. All the individual guides in the various cities and towns were interesting and knowledgeable. The accommodations were always great, both clean and convenient. Our intercity travel was very comfortable and I would definitely book all my travel with this company. I traveled with another company and OAT far exceeds them in customer service.

I have a trip reserved to Iceland this fall and I'm considering just saying bye bye to my deposit. I have questions about the invoice and can't reach someone on the phone to ask and they don't respond to email either. Very bad service; I don't know what happened.

I'll begin by stating that my husband and I have enjoyed five trips with OAT and Grand Circle as well as the Cuba Revealed trip with the Grand Circle Foundation. We have never been disappointed. In April, 2017, however, we were literally walking out the door to catch our cab to the airport for the OAT Sicily trip. At that moment I received a text that our Delta flight out of Pensacola had been delayed. We might, however, still make the connection to Rome. Following up on the second Delta delay notice, I learned that we would not make our connection.
Finally, we learned that our only means of reaching Sicily would have been to fly from Atlanta to Paris the following day; spend the night in Paris; fly from Paris to Rome, spend the night there, and finally meet up with our group three days after the tour had started. All of this came shortly after our local guide wrote a comprehensive letter to all of us, informing us that there would likely be an Alitalia strike in Rome that would affect our flight to Palermo. Although she had not intended it so, she gave the impression that were the strike to go forward, we would be on our own in Rome and would have to make our own arrangements.
Realizing OAT/Grand Circle cannot be held responsible for weather over Atlanta or airline strikes, it still would have been helpful to get any bit of support from them, but none was forthcoming. It seemed to me that we had paid in full and were on our own, with our bags packed and every travel "t" crossed and every "i" dotted.
Finally, an OAT agent said that she wouldn't blame us if we cancelled and we did. The very next day I sent a three-page letter to Trip Mate Insurance, along with the claim form. I could go on in detail about how long it took to get a response from OAT or Trip Mate. In fact, I had to be the bird dog, staying on our case for about six weeks when I finally learned that a travel voucher had been issued to OAT, and I'm not sure if it would have happened without invoking the help of a man in an upper echelon who, long after I sent my complaint to OAT, responded by phone, telling me the letter had just arrived on his desk. Caveat emptor: the voucher can only be used for travel with the company and must be used within a year. By that time, any trip we really wanted to take had been filled, but we could put a "tentative" deposit on a 2019 trip in which case we'd have to ask for an exception to the one-year framework.
Now we've booked a trip on this continent, and our voucher has been applied, but we still have an $800.00 insurance voucher that must be used within the year. From our current invoice it appears there are also dollar credits for future travel, given that our new trip was less expensive. So we ask ourselves, do we stick with the company to use those credits or cut our losses and run?

I tell all my trip leader that I would follow them to the end of earth. People who are looking for adventure, foreign culture, food, religion and customs should try OAT once. Make sure you are in good physical condition, because you walk an average of 3 miles per day, and you are on a go from sunup to sundown. My experience with OAT while in Lima, Peru was jilted into an unpleasant reality when only six hours into the trip, my purse was stolen while dining with our group at La Panka Restaurant. While having our lunch, the tour guide asked me to learn a new dance that he knew as a native Peruvian. I was hesitant, but decided to be polite. As a reflective person, I thought it strange that he wanted to teach me a new dance during lunch and while local dancers were performing on a stage not far from us. The rest of our group of twelve were all seated at our table but when I returned, my purse was missing from the seat where I left it. Many in my group helped search for the missing purse to no avail. Stolen were my purse, passport, credit cards, phone, and cash. It was a flash of thinking and feeling like I had been set up. There were surveillance cameras but the tour guide was unable to get any information and did not follow up on this as he said he would.
I travel often and although I know unfortunate events happen, but OAT was not at all supportive throughout the travel claim process, as I did purchase the additional insurance for $699. I missed two days with the group and was by myself in Lima until I could go through the process to purchase a new temporary passport. The American Embassy in Lima had very few employees who spoke English. It was a harrowing experience over-all and as of April 3, I am still waiting for answers from Trip Mate Travel Ins. Company. I spoke with representatives and a supervisor at OAT and it is clear that they take no responsibility. They keep repeating that the Trip Leader has excellent reviews and they doubt highly that he had anything to do with the theft.
I can not help but feel differently and will never forget how awful it is to be in a place where one is at the mercy of others. OAT advertises as budget friendly; however I could have traveled with National Geographic or another well known travel company simply because of the additional expenses incurred due to theft in Lima.

There are so many opportunities here for hardworking and excellent people. At the same time, we don’t tolerate subpar work/unprofessionalism. I had purchased the travel insurance. My mother is 94 and in the pre-hospice program. She had two heart related surgeries in 2015. When I booked the trip she was pending Medicaid and we were expecting Caregivers to arrive shortly. The Medicaid was delayed and as of the date of my canceling this trip the caregiver status was not guaranteed. Although I have provided medical documentation, the travel insurance, Tripmate has denied my claim. They did not deny my claim until February but have issued me a travel voucher which I am not able to use due to my mother's health. Due to my mother's declining health the travel voucher is a mute point even though it is suppose to be good for one year.
The travel voucher has been dated to expire in November even though the insurance company took 6 months to make the decision. I have gotten nowhere with the insurance company and have not been able to get in touch with OAT as no one appears to answer the phone. I would never recommend this company to anyone ever. In December 2016 I signed up with OAT for my first travel adventure alone, as my husband has become permanently physically and mentally disabled. This was a big deal for me and I put myself into the trusted hands (based on recommendations) of OAT. They signed me up for TripMate for $599 and this was paid up front with my deposit. Because I trusted OAT, I didn't personally check out this company. BIG mistake. My husband and I have travelled extensively before and had such good experiences with travel insurance, I didn't realize that this bad behavior was possible - and especially marketed by OAT. I agree with the previous reviewer - Shame on OAT!
Long story short, my husband has had another health episode that makes leaving the country right now ill advised. No problem - I have insurance right? WRONG! After finally getting through to them, trying to open a claim, giving them my info and then committed 2 typos that required multiple call backs before I could even get to the claim - I downloaded the 5 PAGE document required - with multiple doctor's signatures and a signed release form for all of my husband's medical records! And mind you, I have already paid TripMate, non refundable $599 for essentially nothing. My entire claim was to recover $300. And it could take me weeks to get this all submitted, and after reading these reviews I see it is hopeless. OAT - you've lost a customer. At least until you sever ties with this sham.

I am writing to let you know of the experience I have had with your agency and how it ruined my retirement trip. First of all I was working with Sarah who eventuality left your agency to start her own business. I was then switched over to Cheri ** and no information was given to her from Sarah. Only the information I had kept. We pretty much had to start all over again. I not only found this to be a pain in the ass but totally unprofessional. My trip was to travel to Australia and New Zealand from November 22nd to January 30th. After spending much time with Cheri over which places to go, she then mentioned the bus passes since I did not wish to drive because they drive on the other side of the road and sooner or later I would have an accident. She told me it was a 'hop on hop off' bus ride which gave me the impression that it would be easy and convenient. This was not the case.
First of all she never told me the bus schedule until the last day I saw her and that was the last thing she said to me. Because it was the off season the bus only ran on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Causing me to stay 2-3 days longer than necessary where ever I went, wasting time and money. She should have told me this before selling me the bus pass. After less than 3 weeks I was so fed up I went back home. She also should have advised me about the heat and that I would have been better off going in February not November. I hold her responsible for ruining my trip. In all fairness she should reimburse me for the bus passes and spending over $600.00 in costs for changing my flight schedules. I know this will never happen, she will keep her job and I am out a lot of money and a ruined vacation.
You should teach your employees to be professional in informing the people who are trusting you with the money they are investing in their vacations. I am planning another vacation. To see the mountain gorillas in Rwanda. And you better believe I am not going to waste anymore time and money on your agency. I have already told a number of my friends to stay away from your business.

I have taken about 41 trips with Grand Circle Travel and OAT. 3 were the worst trips ever - Australia and New Zealand was a nightmare because of the people in the group and an inadequate tour director. Costa Rica and Guatemala was bad because the tour guide in Guatemala kept trying to get money from us to feed kids. I just went to Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Russia on May 20. I had signed up to go to the ballet in Russia but because of problems with our tour director that day I wasn't able to go. We were supposed to meet at the coat check at 4:30 and our tour director and the group never showed up.
When they were about to close the Hermitage Museum where we were, I went to a shop and asked them to call our hotel so I could find out where our tour group was. Our tour director was not in her room so I took a cab back to the hotel where we were staying and got there at 6:30 which was time to leave. Our tour director suggested I have a sandwich and go - forgetting I am gluten intolerant and I would want to change into something other than jeans to go to the ballet and I was so aggravated I didn't go. OAT called me too about paying the fee for the ballet and I told them I wouldn't as I didn't go. They called again yesterday and said because they couldn't give 24 hour advance notice they had to pay and expected me to pay. I did and wish I hadn't.
The trip was good but the airlines OAT chose were horrible. I missed my flight to Germany and had to stay in a hotel at San Francisco International airport. Same thing happened flying from St. Petersburg to Germany and I had to stay in a hotel at the airport. The airline insisted I had to buy a new ticket and because of the language difference it wasn't clear why but I paid $440 for a new ticket and they charged me for both my checked bag and carry on. The total for all of this was about $800 and I filed a claim with Trip Mate and have heard nothing. I will never travel with OAT again and I will pester them to get the money from the tour director as it was her fault I missed the ballet. And now I will pester Trip Mate like OAT pestered me.

Complaints about OAT: In May, 2015 I took a trip to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos. Everything about the trip was very well organized and I believe everyone in our group had a similar positive experience. However as a Canadian I was treated in a very unusual way. From the time I registered and paid my deposit I suddenly seemed to have become an American, albeit without going through Immigration or applying for, or receiving, a Green Card. For the real reasons known only to OAT or Grand Circle, I was shown as living at the Head Offices address in Boston. If that was not weird enough, I was travelling with a friend from London, and during the trip I met another Canadian and a Swiss woman and we all had our place of residence changed to exactly the same Boston address! All of this was done without our permission or agreement.
It is my opinion that such an arbitrary and insulting action probably negated the contract we, the travelers, had with OAT as what we provided as our true and legal address was dismissed as irrelevant and another one substituted. Now, why would any company treat its customers in such a cavalier way? Their explanations are interesting. I have written three times and demanded a WRITTEN answer and the only one I got after the first note was that OAT could not handle non-US addresses or postal codes! I have told them in the strongest possible language that I do not believe them and that I have my suspicions as to what they are up to.
After the second and third notes I had phone messages from various employees suggesting that they had the answer to my questions and that I should call them back to discuss. When I returned the call after hours I’d say if the answer is the same as before don’t call me back as I am not interested in repeated rubbish answers and guess what, I hear no more. The question as to why any company would deliberately change registration information, but only for non US residents, would seem to be connected to how the company records and reports its income to its shareholders or to a statutory body like the IRS. By changing my address the money received from me, and other non US residents, shows as US sourced and not Foreign sourced. If this is true it could be a serious problem.
In my correspondence with OAT I said I would never travel with them again if they did not change this practice. I could not get any definitive commitment as to when that might change. The fact is that if they do not want Canadians or other nationalities to travel with them they should state so. (The insurance cover, which is very expensive anyway is available only to US residents. This might be a hint that while they take money off foreigners they cannot handle the recording of it.) I have done OAT the courtesy of showing them this note before I post it in the Complaints section, with no response from them. Should I have any facts wrong I will make the necessary corrections. Their bizarre behavior certainly affected how I viewed the whole holiday and while I thought it was well planned and organized I should not have had my citizenship denigrated by faceless people. This was for us a recurring unexplained distraction.

There are many safari organizations that do a much better job than OAT. Took the Africa trip 5 years ago and it was great. Took it again in June and it was poorly done. They overtaxed the resources on the ground and some things advertised did not happen. We did not get to the Okavango Delta, we did not get a whole day in Chobe National Park. We lost three days with hard uncomfortable travel from camp to camp and one camp was falling apart, was poorly maintained and needs to be closed for a complete revamp.
One place we stayed was more like a Mom and Pop motel in Arkansas than a safari camp in Botswana. They didn't even have their own jeeps and guides - they rent them from another camp. When we crossed the Zambezi River in very small outboard boats we did not even have life preservers - they jeopardized our safety. Some of the wildlife viewing was spectacular and in some places, especially Zambia, we saw very little.
Schedule were not done for us, the customers. They were designed for the guides. We were traveling during Africa's winter and got up very early each morning for game drives and were told every day that it was too cold to see wildlife; so we drove around in cold open jeeps with blankets, waiting for the sun to rise. OAT in Boston told us they could not give us specifics on which of their schedules we would take because, as they said, they were done at the last minute. When I arrived at the Berlin Tegel airport to begin the tour with OAT, a bad windstorm came in and the luggage from many flights could not be taken off the airplanes. We were told to leave the airport and the luggage would get to us, to leave the details of where we were staying. The tour leader told us not to worry, but after two days and no word, I insisted that we go back to the airport to find some information. There were six of us on the tour with no luggage. The tour leader said that he tried to call, but got a busy signal and that's all he could do. We demanded to be taken to the airport and he finally agreed. It was then that we learned that our information was not entered into their computer and so with insistence, he did that.
When we got to the hotel in Prague, the wonderful staff helped us track our bags and they found that my bag was delivered to Dresden, but the tour leader told them to send it back to Berlin because he thought he would have to pay for the transport. The manager at the Prague hotel explained to him that we had trip insurance and he would not have to pay.
I tried to reach the home office of OAT travel in Mass., but I could not find an email address. I finally emailed my children back in the US and asked them to contact OAT for me and tell them what was going on. They called and that was when I finally got an email from someone at their quality management department. I gave her email address to the other people who had no luggage, and she started working on tracking our bags.
Finally, two people got their bags along the path of our travels. She told me she located my bag, gave me the tracking numbers and said she was working on getting the bag to me. I asked the tour leader if he thought I would get the bag before the end of the trip and he was shocked and angry that I had contacted the home office. He had done nothing to help us, but report that he tried to call and got no answer.
Our last stop was Budapest and then I was ending the tour and flying on my own to London. I was not taking the post trip extension to Vienna. I asked the woman at the home office if my bag could be forwarded to me at my hotel in London and I was told that since I was no longer touring with OAT, that that was not possible. When I reminded her that my entire airline ticket, including the flight to London was booked through OAT, she finally agreed.
I finally got my luggage three weeks later, when I was in London. When I arrived home, there was a survey form from OAT for me to fill out about the trip. There was also one for Trip Mate travel insurance to file a claim for what I had to buy. A few days later, I received a call from someone at OAT wanting to discuss the survey form I filled out. He had me on the phone for forty five minutes and I told him how poorly trained and lacking people skills I thought the trip leader was and how miserable the trip was.
In the end, he offered me $250 towards a future trip with OAT. I asked him why I should ever book with them again considering the lack of cooperation I've had during this trip. I also told him that there were enough other companies that I would go through before I ever booked with them again. To add even more stress to the entire mess, the insurance company did not even cover the walking shoes I had to buy, claiming that they would only reimburse $250 and therefore they would not cover the cost of the shoes. I have already discouraged two people from booking a trip with OAT because of the experience I had.

The treatment her friend received during a horrific time was appalling. The follow-up experience after she and her son finally got home to the USA was even more disconcerting. Regardless of the extenuating circumstances of the earthquake that leveled that country, being left behind without this tour group was so unprofessional. The reason people hire Tour Groups when traveling outside of the United States is so they are safe. Not only did the tour guide leave them stranded they also had their travel visas and documents required to travel. After five days of anguish and using their own money were they able to get out of Nepal but to finally arrive in Chicago. They had to make other arrangements to finally get home to Colorado.
Upon their arrival to Colorado they had made numerous attempts to contact Overseas Adventure Travel to inquire about being left behind and this company has made no effort whatsoever to resolve this situation. This company should not be allowed to take people's money to travel. They are a disgrace to other independent companies.

Oat's advertising states "Enjoy FREE Single Supplements on all of our Land and Small Ship Adventures and trip extensions." Therefore, if you travel as a couple, your effective cost is much more per person than a single, since two people get the same room as a single (yet pay twice as much). OAT does not give any benefit or discount to the Couples. It is clear that OAT caters to singles and penalizes Couples.

I have read with dismay the negative reviews here about Overseas Adventure Travel. I have no way of knowing the whole story about these negative stories but people do not go online to give compliments, usually just complain so it can seem to skew the overall impression that is given about a particular company. I have traveled with OAT 11 times and Grand Circle Cruise Lines (same company) 1 time and have never had a bad experience with customer service personnel, air travel, trip leaders or in-country experiences. It does not mean that issues did not come up but they were dealt with in a quick and professional manner.
One of the things I have learned is that you have to be flexible to do adventure travel and stuff does happen often beyond the control of the company such a major weather changes, insurrection in a country (happened to me in Thailand), transit strikes, etc. Most travelers do not read the fine print or may not buy travel insurance. It is not reasonable if you make your own travel arrangements and flights are delayed they are responsible for making any financial loss up to you. They are also not responsible for meeting you at the airport if you do your own arrangements.
On a trip to Morocco, my United flight was delayed departing D.C. and I got to NY with not much time to make my flight to Morocco. An OAT rep. met me as I departed the plane and got me to the airport terminal I needed to get to to make the flight. Without her, I would not have made the flight. My luggage did not make it, but I got in several days later at the Morocco airport.
OAT has a maximum of 16 travelers and I have never had more than 16 and often less on one of their trips. Grand Circle Travel and small ship cruise lines can have 24 or in the case of some trips like Antarctica it could be 100 with multiple trip leaders. I have had a trip go with just 9 people out of 16 possible but it is not reasonable that if the number that signs up for a particular date is below the minimum needed that the trip will still go. They offer other dates but that may not work for some travelers. Flexibility is the key and read the fine print!
I recently attended an OAT/Grand Circle travel meeting in Sarasota, FL and 700 people attended to learn about changes and new trips in the coming year. I have met travelers who have taken 30 or more trips with this company and they would not be doing so if they were having negative experiences. I also have a friend who was at the tip of South America waiting to go to Antarctica in 2015 with Grand Circle, but a ship electrical problem and closing down the port because of bad weather in the Drake Passage ultimately cancelled the trip for 100 people. OAT/Grand Circle put them up for 3 more days, paid for them to get back to the US, gave them a full trip refund, and gave them a $1,000 credit to use for a future trip. Does that sound like the company being described in these reviews? Some of the things that make OAT/Grand Circle stand out are:
1. Free single supplements on land tours and partial credit now for some small ship adventures. I do not know any other company that does this! 2. If the price for the trip drops (it happened to me for Costa Rica), they immediately gave me a refund for the difference before the trip began. 3. Includes US airfare in the cost of the trip from the closest major airport to you. Also included is the cost of in-country airfare. Many companies do not have this in their advertised prices and you have to ask and add it in to find out the true cost of the trip. 4. Ability to set up a private adventure for 10 or more so that it would just be your group. 5. Applies 5% of the cost of the trip to a future trip over the next two years. 6. Give a free travel related gift before travel. 7. Grand Circle Foundation have given back hundreds of millions of dollars for schools, orphanages, wells, etc in the communities they visit around the world.
As I said, I am sure than some of these reviews had some legitimate complaints but some people are impossible to please and have unreasonable expectations when problems happen. Those people are better off served by another travel company. If you are going to do adventure travel, you have to be flexible and be reasonable in your expectations. OAT/Grand Circle is the finest travel company I have ever experienced, period!

OAT was purchased by Grand Circle Tours some years ago and has now adopted their policies for many administrative processes - which is why those who have traveled with them in the past have noticed a change. As for cancelling a trip - it must be for one of the reasons stated in the insurance policy. You generally have a few days to cancel the trip insurance and try another policy. Read it. Call and ask questions before you purchase it. I have had no issues with 3 different refunds from 3 different travel insurers given that I had medical situations and documentation. You cannot decide that you cannot go - a doctor must tell you that. It is the same as any other insurance - the insurance company always determines what is covered and what they will pay.

OAT is a third rate travel outfit. We stayed in second class hotels... some of them filthy. The group leader was ignorant and rude. I had to endure her horrible behavior to other members and endure personal attack against myself. The quality of the tour was at a third grade level. This tour is for the deaf, dumb and blind. Don't waste your money and time.

I have traveled with OAT one summer ago and had a wonderful experience. I was scheduled to travel with them again this summer. Unfortunately I had to cancel my trip. When I called OAT they walked me through the process of getting my refund. I cancelled in January, my trip is the middle of June. I was told when I called that I was out my 1200 in trip insurance and my 600 dollar deposit, but since I had purchased travel insurance through them, I would get my 600 dollar deposit back, all I had to do was file a claim. Per their instructions I filed the claim with Trip Mate.
A week later I find out my claim was denied. When I called to inquire I was told I was given a 600 dollar credit for another trip with OAT. I explained that OAT told me I would get my money back. They said file an appeal. I have and will wait to see what happens (On a side note when I called OAT to tell them of the denial they told me there was nothing they could do because it is not their decision. It is up to the Insurance Company which they have nothing to do with. I said "Funny, then why am I getting a 600 dollar travel voucher for your company if you two have nothing to do with each other?"). I will keep you posted and let you know if they make good on their word.

We had an even worse experience with OAT. We paid for a cruise in the Ukraine and about 2 weeks before it was supposed to leave we were notified by OAT that they had to cancel it because they never got permission from the Ukraine to travel there. Was OAT sorry, not in the least! To top it off, they wanted to keep the $9,000 we had paid to be applied to a future trip. We have never and will never travel with them again!

I am due to go on my 5th trip with OAT in two weeks. I decided to get on the site just to see some reviews. For a company this large, I was astounded to see only 11 reviews and all BAD. I now see why anyone I've recommended to this company has not signed on. Our tour guides have been great. Things have always gone pretty smoothly. We've stayed in really nice places, but I have to agree with the poor service coming from the home office. The right hand NEVER seems to know what the left hand is doing.
OAT is SO stringent, so petty and unmoving on some things I find it disgusting and a VERY poor business tactic. Even with someone doing as many trips as my sister and I have, they will not budge when it comes to giving that lousy little credit toward another trip if it falls just weeks after their designated expiration date. How in the hell can they expect the average person to be able to take two expensive trips in back to back years? Make the damn credit for more than one year or make it indefinite. They goad you with these tiny credits and then REFUSE to work with you to keep you as a customer.
I have written time and time again, called, gone direct to the Lewis' about the utter waste of postage, paper and redundant mailings and nothing changes. The cost of our trips go up, in part, due to the UNBELIEVABLE waste in mailings alone. Example - once signed on for a trip, wait until the time period for cancellation has expired before sending out the costly trip package. Just think of how many people cancel 24 hours after signing on for a trip, but OAT seems to be so needy for business, that they waste approx. $10 in mailing a welcome package which will be tossed away. WAIT until the time frame for cancellation has passed to mail anything to the client!!! Same goes for when you've done a few trips with them, you get your choice of a gift. Long story short, my sister and I should have received one jacket each, but due to their errors, we each received 3 or 4. Wrong colors, wrong sizes, wrong item, etc. At least 4 OAT employees have agreed with the utter waste of mailings.
So there is good about the company and the trips, but they have a LOT to learn about customer care and keeping customers. I agree, OAT shows NO concern when they cancel a trip. They could care less about the customer and how they have worked other things around an OAT trip only to have it cancelled. If just 4 people sign on for a trip, have done all their personal prep, paid for the trip and ins. then it should go as planned. OAT is NOT poor and I doubt many trips have just a few people going, so on those trips that do have a low number at least contact those few people and discuss it with them, don't make the decision without some kind of input from the client as to how this will affect them. Most people are willing to change unless they have other air plans, using miles, have paid for ins. with an outside company, etc.
TIPS: As for this new tipping plan OAT has, I would like to know how much they are tipping assistants on busses, baggage handlers, etc. I hope to God they give a decent tip each and every time. I have been on enough trips to see how utterly CHEAP Americans can be when it comes to tipping. If OAT recommends a $2 tip, by God that's all they will give or less. It is embarrassing to be with a group of Americans and actually see them STIFF on tips or give one that is nothing more than a slap in the face to the very deserving people working so hard to make your trip pleasurable. Most people on these trips have money and will buy $1,000 rugs, jewelry, etc. but are cheap, cheap, cheap when it comes to the service people.

In April 2011, my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed OAT's "Turkey's Magical Hideaways", with a pre-trip extension to Syria and a post-trip extension to "Nemrut and the Bible Lands". We were on the pre-trip in Syria, just as the Syrian opposition to President Bashir al Assad inched the country to the brink of civil war. Fortunately, our guide, Nabil **, was able to skirt any areas of conflict, and we completed the scheduled itinerary. This was our third time exploring Turkey, not counting the two years I spent there on assignment with the U.S. Air Force Medical Service Corps; but we felt there was still more of this country that we wanted to see and enjoy. So in 2013, we booked a return trip on OAT's "Turkey's Sacred Lands and Ancient Civilizations", with a scheduled departure of October 2014. Using OAT's "Good Buy" program, and including the cost of travel protection paid to OAT's travel insurance subsidiary, we prepaid the trip at a cost of approximately $12,000 for the two of us.
The itinerary for the scheduled 2014 "Sacred Lands" trip included travel and stops in Southeastern Turkey, along the border with Syria, and included Sanliurfa, Mt. Nemrut and Gaziantep, which is less than twenty kilometers from Aleppo, Syria. After ISIS began its barbaric campaign kidnapping and beheading Americans and others, and seizing large areas of Syria along the Turkish/Syrian border, we concluded that it was simply not safe to travel to that area at this time; and heeding published travel warnings, we decided to cancel trip.
Upon contacting OAT, we were told by our travel representative that the trip was "going as scheduled", and that their people in Turkey had reported no problems in the scheduled itinerary areas. This in spite of the fact that it was widely reported by U.S. news sources that ISIS fighters were moving freely between Syria and Turkey, and had detonated IEDs at village markets on the Turkish side of that porous border. We did note that future departures for this trip were listed on the OAT website as "Sold Out", which may be marketing-speak for "Cancelled". I would love to hear from any travelers who took the October departure, as to their experiences, and whether the trip adhered to the published itinerary.
We were adamant that we were simply not prepared to travel to that area at this time. After confiding that she herself would not travel to that area at this time, our travel representative advised that, if we did cancel the trip there would be a penalty of $6,000 or roughly 50% of the amount we had paid. The penalty amount would have to be appealed to and adjudicated by the travel insurance carrier, a GCT/OAT subsidiary. If the appeal was successful, we would be issued a voucher for future travel with GCT/OAT, rather than a refund.
The only alternative offered was to transfer our total payment to another GCT/OAT trip. This option, however, had to be exercised by the Spring of 2015. Ultimately, with greatly diminished enthusiasm, we elected to switch to the GCT "Romance of the Rhine and Mosel" river cruise in November 2014. The OAT response to this whole matter has made us question their level of commitment to us as returning travelers. Since 2007, except for our independent travel, we have given all of our "tour" travel business - a total of ten base trips and nine pre or post trip extensions to GCT/OAT. We have, additionally, encouraged ten traveling friends to use GCT/OAT as their preferred tour operator.
Prior to the unpleasantness regarding the cancellation of the 2014 "Sacred Lands" trip, we had booked and paid for GCT's "Bordeaux: Vineyards, Vintages and Chateaux" with a departure in the Fall of 2015. Beyond that trip, it will be less likely that we will view GCT/OAT as our preferred travel partner, as I feel our money, loyalty and recommendations over the years did not count for much, when we needed an expression of appreciation beyond that you would expect to be given to even a first-time customer/traveler.

Numerous customer service agents told her that they were working on an issue and would get back to her, including supervisor James ** - but none of them never did. When I called to find out what had happened, I received the exact same treatment - I was transferred, told that people would call me back, and the issue was never addressed. When I asked to speak to the manager of the supervisors, I was told I could not speak to them.
It's the same experience you get from a mega corporation like Verizon or CapitalOne, except you are paying them thousands of dollars to guide you through a foreign country. I have been on two trips and been fortunate to have only minor problems. When you book a trip with OAT, they require you to sign an onerous contract waiving just about all your legal rights (like the right to a trial, right to bring a class action, etc.). Also, they pretty much say, they are not liable for anything that happens to you, including death, because they allegedly have no control over their overseas vendors, such as bus drivers, tour guides, etc. Amazingly, they reserve the right to overbook trips and give you notice, just 4 days before the trip, that the trip is overbooked and you have been bumped. As other people on this site have said, they reserve the right to cancel at any time. They also reserve the right to increase the price of the trip at any time if things happen such as a change in currency valuation, price increase in fuel, increase in admission fees at parks, etc.

**Don't ever use the room safes to put your valuables in.** I booked a trip with OAT to Africa. While there, I used the room safe while the camp guides took us out on safari each day. It just so happened that I counted my money in the safe before I left one day and even wrote down the denominations of the bills I put in the safe. Later that evening, I realized $400.00 was stolen from my safe by the staff at the camp that stays behind while we were all out on a scheduled safari drive. How clever of them. Another woman had her traveler checks stolen. Plus, she already signed them in both spots so she was out of luck too. I complained to OAT the day after this happened but they DID not care and DID nothing about it. I was a seasoned traveler with them for years but will **never**, ever travel with them again. When they bumped me off the tour, I incurred a penalty for the flight cancellation, lost a prepaid one-night hotel stay (I was planning the trip in 2 stages with a 1-night layover), plus the cost of the 2 visas, altogether almost $1000. We went to Morocco in March 2011 with OAT. Our flight, Sacramento-Houston-Paris-Casablanca, was late departing from Houston by three hours because of engine trouble. Our tickets were booked by OAT. I called on the cellphone saying that we would miss our connection in Paris, and hence, the agent to receive us in Casablanca should expect us in the subsequent connection to Casablanca, which I can only find out in Paris. There were none to receive us in Casablanca. We had no time to telephone from Paris as we had to run to our subsequent connection. We had a real scare in Casablanca, had to buy telephone coupon card for $100.
Calling the number in USA was a hellish experience. The access numbers given (zeros and country code, etc.) were wrong. Finally, after an hour of effort, I got the agent in USA who asked me to take a taxi to Marrakesh (some 100 km. away). It was real bargaining and fleecing by taxi driver on the way, jacking up prices as we went along. Fortunately, at the hotel name given to us, the OAT agent took care of the taxi bill. The rest of the trip was fine.
The trauma at Casablanca still haunts us. I have made two telephone calls to senior persons at OAT asking them to at least reimburse me for the telephone card, to soften the blow and to win our loyalty in spite of their error in not having an agent meet us at the Casablanca airport in spite of our having alerted them from Houston. No, it was a flat refusal to do so. I will never spend a nickel traveling with OAT.

Overseas Adventure Travel disappointed us. We had paid for our Morocco holiday and had paid OAT to arrange for our air travel from Sacramento, CA so that if there is any delay in flight, a representative would still meet us in Casablanca upon arrival. Our flight from USA got delayed.
In Paris we had to take the next flight to Casablanca as we missed our original connection. I had phoned OAT before we left USA that we would miss the connection in Paris due to delayed departure and have to take the next connecting flight from Paris. I could not contact OAT from Paris because of long hold time on the telephone (40 mins.). Lo and behold, there was no rep at the Casablanca airport upon our arrival late in the evening. I had to buy a phone card to call OAT in USA and had to endure a wait time of 38 minutes. After a lot of shouting, they agreed to transport me by taxi to Rabat (100 miles away) at their expense.
Most complaints on tour operators stem from missed connections. OAT, in spite of their boasting about repeat customers, failed us. Further, I had asked that their office call me to explain why there was this slip up. They have not cared to call us yet. This is what they care about customers. Do not trust them. I had to buy a telephone card in Casablanca for $20 to call them in the USA. I was on hold for 38 minutes.

I booked a trip to India using this company because I heard this company was a reputable and good company that provided everything including international air. I paid a $350 deposit around the beginning of May 2010 which is non-refundable after 30 days. They said if I paid the balance full online, I could save an additional $50. So I paid in full including all applicable taxes online by using my checking account. Since I had plans to spend a time with my family in Japan on December through January, I had to book and purchase the tickets for my own round trip airfare from San Francisco to Narita and a round trip airfare from Narita to Delhi. I did this about 3 weeks ago. If I waited, those airfares would have gone up significantly closer to the trip. As you know those tickets are non-changeable and non-refundable. I also just applied for a visa going to India.
Yesterday, a tour operation manager from Oversea Adventure company called me and told that the tour I booked had been cancelled due to "insufficient participants". I was totally devastated. I can't cancel the trip for fear of not getting my money back, but they can cancel the trip with a short notice? They said they apologize for the inconvenience and I will be receiving a full refund in 10 days. I told them that I had already paid for connecting flights and asked them what they could do to accommodate me. They said that it was not their responsibility. They also said that they would not pay for any fees regarding my connecting flights.
Before I booked this trip, I checked two other companies about a similar program in India. Programs on their website tell me it's guaranteed tour or not and sales agents informed me that some of the tour is not guaranteed. So for this company, I didn't even think there was a chance that their trip can be cancelled due to insufficient participants.
Regardless, their sales agents should have inform me about the possibility of trip cancellation before they take my deposit money like the other travel companies. People who want to travel with Oversea Adventure company should read all of their reviews prior to booking with them. What happened to me shouldn't be allowed without some sort of compensation.
