Made an online booking, paid for it and for my own insurance. On location, they sneaked another, premium, insurance into the contract - without my knowledge and despite my statement that I had already had my own insurance!!! In total, I have paid almost double of the original booking price. Sent them my complaint but they turned it down. A rip-off company - AVOID!

Europcar’s own services are satisfactory (app, prices, information) but in the case of Miami International Airport it does business through FOX off-AirPort, which does not acknowledge Europcar’s priority status.

Upon being given the keys to our rental car, it became clear that the car could not fit our two bags in it (these were not outsize bags, just regular airline "checked luggage"). We had ordered that class of car because Europcar make a point of stating on their website that it takes two bags. I then politely asked for a different car that would simply do what their website clearly promises, but guess what.... "Sorry sir, we can't help you, except to offer you the next higher category of car" (for which I would be expected to pay approximately DOUBLE the price).
I showed the proof of the website which clearly stated (and still states) that the category I had selected was suitable for two cases in addition to four passengers. Again, I received the same unhelpful response from the Europcar agent: "The only option is for you to rent a higher category of car". I politely asked the area manager, but she was unwilling to help with the situation and also refused to give me her name!
Upselling is OK, but not when the customer is - as a result of incorrect sales information during reservation - forced otherwise to leave their suitcase on the pavement. I was simply forced into an upsell. They knew exactly what they were doing. That's the whole game there. Beware - they will do everything to force you, too. I recommend you avoid them like the plague. I followed up with their complaints department, but of course that was a waste of time, they flat refused any compensation of any kind. I cannot adequately express my disgust with this company!

We contracted a service with Rentalcars.com, a special all inclusive offer. At the time of pick up, Europcar charged us for the same insurance a second time 10 days after we returned the car even though we already had one included with Rentalcars. The receptionist had everything ready to sign (only in French - service contracted in Spanish). We assumed it was what we had bought online (Car + Insurance, not car + insurance x 2). Don't even try to contact customer service, they respond like robots and Rentalcars didn't even try to get in touch with Europcar to sort out the problem. We are now in the process of a formal complaint. We are talking about 400 euros for an insurance service sold twice (Rentalcars and Europcar).

My rental was in France (CDG to Rennes). Their website doesn't transcribe dates correctly. This caused me to have to pay, then cancel, then get a refund (immediate), then rebook. For personal reasons, I later had to cancel that booking (rebooked with them for another location, so they were still getting my business). Because my credit card was hacked, I needed a refund on a different card. I STILL haven't seen that refund, two months later. According to my credit card company, I need to wait another month before I can take additional action.
At the airport, a family in front of us was returning a car they had rented earlier because its tire pressure light was on - understandably, they were afraid of a blowout or of being stuck on the side of the road with two young kids. They got another car. We checked in and got a "free upgrade"! Yes, they gave us the car that had the tire light on. The Europcar parking lot attendant wouldn't help (no way to check things like this??). We checked the pressure a couple hours later & it seemed OK, but the car make and pressure measurement units/methods were unfamiliar because we're not Europeans.
Took it to a Renault dealer later & all seemed OK, so it's just a tire sensor they won't fix? This does nothing for relaxation on one's vacation! Arrived home to find an additional $46 charge, with no communication as to what it was for. I emailed through their site (the only option they offer), and over a week later have not received a reply. I have just filed a dispute with my credit card company.

I rented through PayPal and at the airport was asked to pay in full again due to possible collateral damage and no possibility of charging that through PayPal. Received the promise of getting my money back on return. After 1 month calling over and over they have not reimbursed me. Why?

Up until now, I have been a regular customer of Europcar (I even have top-tier status with them). I have noticed their level of service drop over the last 12 months and a recent booking has now led to the decision to switch to a different car hire company. I recently collected a vehicle from Melbourne Airport, upon collection I mentioned to a staff member that there was a tiny chip on the windscreen, I was told not to worry, as it was so small it would not be an issue.
On returning the vehicle, I was greeted by a different staff member who pointed out the damage to the windscreen, I informed him that the damage was there on pick up and the previous staff member had told me that it was nothing to worry about. A couple of weeks later I noticed a charge to my credit card for $1357 from Europcar, despite emailing to and fro for a couple of weeks and disputing the situation they are refusing to refund the fee they have charged to my card.
(In addition to the charge they didn't even notify me that they were going to take this money from my credit card, when I asked about this they told me I had been emailed twice.... turns out that even though I am a Europcar Privilege member who rents on a regular basis, they couldn't even get my name and email address right.)
I wish I had taken a photo upon pickup, however, I decided to trust the word of a Europcar staff member (this was my big mistake). I feel that spending an extra 10 minutes taking photos of every car we hire, just in case this happens should not be necessary. I also feel that we should be able to trust a member of the company to give us correct information when we report something. My advice would be to avoid Europcar like the plague, they have gone significantly downhill in their customer service and should not be trusted.

Booked an automatic Kia Sportage 6 weeks in advance to find a Volkswagen Tiguan with dents and scratches awaited. Europcar's onsite rep offered an upgrade for an extra €15 per day. Furthermore, because we unknowingly arrived on a Bank Holiday, an additional €35 fee was required with an extra €48 to drive from Estonia to Finland. I had hoped to post a wonderful review based on a positive experience but find myself now warning other potential victims of this scam in advance. Avoid..

If you use your Credit Card for waiving Europcar/Fox Rental Car insurance. Avoid at all costs! It’ll cost ya! What to Expect: Wanted to share my more than unhappy experience with using Europcar/Fox Rental Car at the SJO location. Highlights include classic low price bait and switch charges, intentionally higher authorization fees and many times more than the stated policy on their website which will mean you will have to purchase their inflated insurance. If you use your credit card for liability/collision damage waiver, their website is clear in saying a charge of 5K to 10K will be preauthorized. Even the Europcar website that lists the costs of deposit on a credit car for the country of Costa Rica is the total rental estimate + 1600 USD.
But when picking up your rental car, they will instead inflate the cost to $30,000, a flat out incorrect amount and in direct contrast to what their website advertises. See here for this exact detail: **. I am not the only customer that has faced the inflated authorization charge of $30,000 as others have written about the same experience. See: **
So when I rented, how much was the deposit charge in order to decline their coverage? 30,000 USD! Gotcha. Not only is that an illegal and deceptive advertising bump up, they know most won’t have that much credit..the result: Being presented at the time of rental with added fees and their own insurance package of insurance and unnecessary add-ons which is not even on their website. Tripling my total rental cost! Also added charges for things like tire or windshield or theft protection without offering to view the amounts of these charges at the time of rental. No Pura Vida at this place.
Additional concerns. Here is what to expect: This location does not provide a list of charges at the time of rental. Just a supermarket receipt style printout (width 2 inches) of the daily/weekly rental, extra days/hours rental fee and that you’ve looked over the vehicle prior to renting. And, in the smallest font possible will be a list of charges that by signing you have agreed to.
You’ll be a bit confused at this point of the reservation experience, having prepared for the rate you booked and reserved, and which Fox Rental Car/Europcar agreed to but being given something different, and the additional insurance you have or planned to purchase. You will have acquired a reservation quote on their website, pre-read their rental policies on their website to plan for what be charged, and hope that your due diligence will not present any big surprises.
You’ll try to show your reservation, your letter of insurance coverage printed out by your credit card company specifically saying ‘coverage in costa rica’, in order to decline collision/LDL, and surprisingly none of which will be looked at when you present these to the agent. As if they know ahead of time an intention to not allow a customer to use their credit card for the liability/collision damage waiver and prepare the customer to be left with no other option but to purchase their expensive insurance of walk away...
In response to your questioning, you’ll be told that your rate is quite a good one and other rental car companies nearby at SJO where someone may of booked a low rate will often show up for their rental car and will be told no car is available, so that they can rent cars to higher paying customers. And at that point, the agent will show his/her scratchpad with a $1050 number and tell you that you could purchase their Europcar full coverage at this rate. True story! Add to the long flight, going through the airport process, and wanting to get your vacation started, when they say ‘just sign here and here and you're ready to go’, you know that while going back and forth with the agent over the charges, you’ll have to pay for what you didn’t agree to.
And at that point, ‘they gotcha ’ as who is going to decide to just cancel on the spot and then pay really high ‘day of rental reservation’ prices at a different rental car agency. And the process will also be painstakingly slow. Any information you provided when making the initial reservation will all have to be verbally given again, entered into their system, adding to the process. You may see other customers unhappy with the process as I did, but watch them ‘put their hands up’. With that small receipt for a contract, it makes it very hard to read or know what is being accepted. So you’ll sign and hope to clear it up later.
I actually thought this was not the rental contact and that the usual standard sheet of paper would be handed over to me so that I could view each charge (rather than only showing just one total charge for the entire reservation and the daily and weekly rates), and also a place to add the condition of the rental car. The small receipt, which is actually your entire rental contract is ridiculously small and not the industry standard where a normal sheet of paper lists important details that Europcar/Fox Rental excludes:
• breakdown of charges and costs for each item added to your reservation This is different to receiving a list or breakdown of charges in a normal letter size print out.
• The small supermarket receipt rental contract does not have an area to mark scratches, dents, damage for the car are renting! When you ask about that you’ll be told “hey take a video of the car and photos” and when you ask if they have a checked list of minor damages, scratches etc, you are told they have it on the computer, and….when asked to see that, , they will say that is not possible. Sounds more than fishy, lacking integrity, and designed to maximize their profits.I’ve rented a dozen times from other companies, and all used a sheet of paper for a rental contract, and perform a walk-thru inspection of the rental car for both parties protection.
What to expect upon return of your rental car. More concerns. Upon return of your rental reservation: when returning your rental car, they will again take a video, not explain or tell you of any charges and further, not provide you with any printed document; at all. Again, a big departure from the other companies. So effectively, you won’t have the option to discuss ‘their findings’ or possible additional charges when returning the car! Several hours later and after you have left for the airport or are on the flight, you will get an email receipt with the final cost for the rental period. And this one will be a sheet size of paper and include whether you accepted or declined specific charges.
But even this final stage of the reservation will not detail what those costs were for each item. It will just show the total price for everything resulting in you never really knowing what you were paying for. For example, the receipt will not list the cost of each charge they added (or put you on the spot to pay). Poor business practice no doubt intended to reduce complaints or charge backs.
You may try to detail as much of this information as you can during the rental time and send an email to customer support for the branch you rented from and the manager, Edgar Jimenz. You may try to detail this information at the time you return the car. You may try to detail this information in 2 follow up emails to the branch location customer support email address provided. I did all of those. The response each time: No response! At all. What to do?
Only when digging up the CEO of Europcar, Caroline Parot (fyi they bought Fox Rental Car in 2019) and adding their email address to my email inquiry and request for refund did a executive services person reply to investigate (Suhail **). Still no response from the branch location I rented from. Suhail ** will tell you that your credit card is not valid for use in Costa Rica (which it is), and say you accepted the charges, and consider the case closed.
I’ve never been burned by a rental car company and have rented for just over 30 years of my life. This one broke that record. And I hope this experience can be used by others as they make their decision on whom to rent. My best experience in San Jose Airport was with National Car Rental. In sum, everything will be done to maximize profit and leave you little choice but to purchase their insurance, even if the terms on their website differ from what you are being told at the rental counter. And, you’ll be given a small receipt making it hard to know what you are accepting and even harder still to record damages to the rental vehicle. Caveat emptor! You may find other reviews of Europcar SJO here **.

We were visiting the UK from Australia. We used Wotif to hire a car through Europcar. We gave April 2nd, 12pm as the pick up time. Our flight was delayed and we could not make the pick up time, we were 1 hour late. The office was closed and they said that they would not reopen it for us. They told us that our booking was cancelled and we would have to hire another car. We asked if we could pick up the car we hired in the morning but they told us that this was not possible. We had to hire another car at an additional cost of $890.
We also contacted wotif.com to see if they could help because Europocar said that because they were our booking agent, we had to get a refund through them. 3 months on we have still not received a refund. Both Europcar and Wotif state that we are not entitled to one because we were late to pick up the car. It did not matter to them that we were late because the flight was delayed. Surely a company can not take your money and provide nothing in return.

Europcar erroneously charged my credit card $500 linked to a reservation that wasn't even mine, about 5 months after the reservation occurred. For the last 3 months I have tried tirelessly to have them revert this charge, proved that it wasn't my reservation, opened several cases and made over a dozen calls. It's been an absolute black hole of time. While the customer service reps agree there has been an error made, they always tell me they will forward it on to another team to fix and then I NEVER HEAR BACK. I am at an absolute loss here of what more I can do. People, rent with other providers even if they have a higher daily rate. In this case my dad made a reservation under his name and his credit card, and when we picked up the car I paid the extra charge of having a second driver (me) and since then Europcar has been charging me, with the erroneous charges starting 5 months after my dad's reservation was completed. WTF.
Europcar - if you are reading this, here are a few of my case numbers. How nice it would be to you guys to actually respond and correct this egregious error.

I rented a car in Bath UK for a 3 day trip around Wales. On day 2 I had a tire blow out on a country road in Wales. As per company policy I called Europcar and they connected me to their emergency tire service. I also told them I was more than willing to pay for any costs. On a side note they have no spare or jack in the car. The tire repair company made me sit on the side of the road for 4 hours before telling me that no one will come out. They informed me that they wouldn't be able to help me. I asked them what I was to do and they said we don't know. I called other emergency service companies and they informed me that they couldn't service Europcar vehicles. I almost thought my wife and I would have to stay overnight on the top of the mountain in 8 degree Celcius weather. Luckily, a wonderful couple drove us to a town 10 miles away. It was a Sunday so I had to wait until the morning to go to the local garage and arrange a repair.
Unfortunately they didn't have the proper size tire and had to order a new one which would be delivered the next day. I called the location where I rented the car, told them of our dilemma, and was promised I wouldn't be charged late charges. I got the car back 30 hours late. That was not the truth. The original cost was $209.27, they charged me $591.83. Furthermore, the agent I returned the car to said he wasn’t able to provide me with an invoice and that I would only be charged the same rate as the original rental agreement. Also a lie. I have tried disputing the charges to no avail. There is a real possibility that the tire was damaged prior to me renting the car. The blow out occurred on the wall of the tire facing underneath the car. So not only did I have to pay extra for the rental but $250 for a tire which might not be my fault. Counting canceled train tickets, hotel reservations, changing flight reservations I am out over $1,000.

I hired a car from Luton Airport pick up 24th Feb 2022. My booking was connected to my flight which was due to land at 1650 hours. I went through passport control which took 45 minutes, collected my luggage and proceeded by the bus to the Europcar pick up point. I arrived about 1825 hours and it was closed. Luckily for me the receptionist was just about to leave after “waiting for me”. I explained that I had no idea the desk closed and that I came straight from the flight. He told me there would be an after-hours fee of £60 which I disputed. He assured me he would “waive” this amount. However, it was charged to my agreement which I signed after (I should have checked). After I arrived at the desk two other people also arrived.
I emailed Customer services to dispute this charge but it was not accepted (despite me being told it would be “waived”). I asked Customer services to check with their receptionist which I guess they didn’t. I have been a customer of Europcar for over 10 years and regularly hire vehicles and always find the staff and service excellent. This is the first issue I ever had and I feel completely let down by the company. I am a single person travelling – what would I have done if the Receptionist was not there. From a company point of view, they could have tried to call me to see if I was coming. I have been a loyal customer all these years, but somehow it's not reciprocated and as customers we are just a number. I appreciate they said the office was shut but if the booking is connected to a flight there should be a procedure to ensure clients are managed well and able to collect their car when they have booked one.

Poor customer service and misleading pricing. Quoted price. Accepted and booked offer. Received voucher stating the final price incl. all fees & taxes. When picking up the vehicle (exhausted from no sleep after early am flight, and lengthy period spent at customs & baggage claim), the employee, who spoke as little English as we did Spanish, told us we needed to put a deposit on the vehicle OR purchase extra insurance. We chose the deposit and signed the paperwork given to us in Spanish. When the credit card bill arrived, we realized we had been charged 5x the agreed amount of the voucher.
Also; shortly after receiving the car, we found ourselves stranded with a flat tire. Unable to reach Europcar with the number we were provided with, the police officer who found us, went above and beyond the call of duty to help us change the damaged tire. He recommended we replace the tire, as the other back tire was as dangerously damaged as the one just blown, and he didn’t want us stranded once again with no spare. We paid for a replacement tire at our expense and immediately notified Europcar of the incident, a copy of the receipt and request for refund via email.
We have tried many times to contact them about this to no avail. We were told several times; they were looking into this and would get back to us but never did. When we returned the vehicle, and the damaged tire we had replaced, the salesman promised us he would send us an email with form to submit for refund of tire and overpayment. We were shuffled quickly into the shuttle to take us back to the airport, and the email we were promised was never received.
Never, not ever, again. Do not risk renting from Europcar Costa Rica – Beautiful Country, wonderful people, but this company has not shown us they care about our welfare. They have been deceitful with the information they presented, then took advantage of us when we were at our most vulnerable, and not on equal footing to fully understand what they are doing. The worst is that they will not take the time to remedy any errors which have occurred or negotiate a reasonable solution that is fair to both of us.

I hired a car from Europcar at Alicante on November 9th last year. When I hired the car, via the internet, I hired it on the basis of Third Party Insurance Cover. When I arrived at the Europcar desk in the Airport the staff member I dealt with wanted to charge me €257 for a ten day hire period or over €25 a day for an upgrade from Third Party to Comprehensive Insurance. In Ireland where insurance costs are high, one would have had to pay at most €300 annually for this type of upgrade. I refused to pay this this as it was clearly a rip off.
When I went to the Parking Lot to collect the vehicle, my wife and I noticed a mark or scratch (about 10 centimeters) on the front bumper of the car and we both pointed it out to the girl, who handed the vehicle, before we took possession of it. There were what appeared like six blemishes or existing cases of small damage listed on the invoice and as could see no other clearly visible damage we foolishly assumed this mark, which was the only one we could anyway, was listed 'in the system'. The mark was clearly visible and how it could not have been listed in the system is baffling.
To make a long story they charged me over €300 Euros for a scratch 10 centimeters long, which is an outrageous figure, even if I had been responsible for the damage. I am very disappointed with this kind of service and I will never deal with these people again. Meanwhile, I have also ascertained that some Irish Car Insurance Policies cover you for any car you hire in Spain or any part of Europe anyway, so clarify this before you hire any car anywhere in Europe.

Then it went on and they tried to get me to take an SUV that was twice the price, then they said that we would need a 5000 deposit in some cases, $1000 deposit in the case they were trying to push me towards. Don't rent from Europcar in the USA. They used to be such a good company, but now can't organize themselves out of a cardboard box! We rented a car from Europcar in Miami for a visit to the USA. Upon arrival, I took my family and our luggage 20 minutes all the way to the car rental building across the airport to find.... NO OFFICE FOR EUROPCAR AND NO SIGNS OR INFORMATION.
I found a phone number online for Europcar Miami and got only a recording with "Welcome to Fox Car Rental." There were two options: get their address (recorded) and directions from Miami airport (recorded). These directions sent us outside to bus stop 1 (hardly labeled at all, no sign that says Europcar or Fox Car Rental). Finally, we arrive at Fox and get our car, only to find that road tolls are not included, as they had been on our last visit to Miami three years before. So, after paying more than originally agreed to include Florida road tolls, we leave with our rented car.
When we return the car, I walked in to ask here the shuttle picks up, unloaded our luggage and returned the car. And waited. And waited. Speaking with the attendants there was unhelpful. I received no explanation as to why the shuttle had driven by us without stopping after we had been waiting 20 minutes. Further discussion ultimately led to an unproductive disagreement over how long we had been waiting. After too many requests for shuttle, we ultimately booked an uber to the airport so as not to miss our flight. I read online that this merger/acquisition happened more than 2 years before. Don't rent a car with Europcar in Jamaica! I reserved a car with them through Expedia and they did not honor the reservation. I suggested I could come back tomorrow and asked what time. They gave me a time and referred me to an expensive taxi when I asked for a recommendation.
When I came back the next day there was still no car for me and the service representative was completely unhelpful and unconcerned. The customers in front of me returning their car complained that the car was in poor repair. Finally I just walked away and the company I ended up renting a car with, for twice as much, explained that the reservation was too good of a deal - $330 for six days - that the company will give priority to anyone who offers more money, regardless of reservations. As two women with two children travelling on our own in Jamaica we were depending on the reservation and we did not appreciate the poor service and resulting huge inconvenience.

VERY VERY BAD - AWFUL EXPERIENCE!!! Read this entire review and save yourself a lot of money and wasted time on them!!! Used them for our Cabo San Lucas vacation - was for a pre-paid reservation at the their SJD airport location. We "pre-paid" for 2-week rental and insurance thru Orbitz back in March of 2021 [before the news told us prices were going up like crazy] for a November 2021 vacation. They stated they would not honor the pre-paid rental, and, of course, they would not honor the pre-paid car insurance. Insisted that we take their free upgrade [which means higher cost for their car insurance] to a larger car and crazy high prices on the car insurance!
Absolutely worst car rental experience that I have ever ever ever dealt with in over 40+ years of my life! Not a way to start a vacation. Took way way too long to actually perform the car rental transaction itself. AND, they insisted that they put an additional $1200 credit hold on top of the $1300 car rental charge - so over $2500 to rent a car ... still waiting on the $1200 hold to come off. AND, they insisted that the only way to save any money was to go through a "timeshare presentation" for 90-minutes and we would qualify for a $300 credit back ----> but must show proof that we attended the timeshare presentation [at least they serve us breakfast].
I would not recommend them [or Fox Car Rental - the 1st name of the company that I booked with ... now goes by Europcar]. I almost forgot, we have to now go back to Orbitz and get them to refund our money - Europcar would not initiate the refund of our Orbitz Pre-Paid car & insurance fees ---> ANOTHER RIP-OFF!!!! NOT RECOMMENDED. SCAMMER | RIP-OFF | STAY AWAY!!!! They should not be in business - this really sucks!!!! Just Awful!!!!

Once we get a key for a car (another 45 min) we found that the car was broken (bottom engine cover was almost fall off). When I told the Steve (Europcar agent) he told me that it is OK and they are not going to replace the car. Then we realized that the car was not AWD, it was 2WD. We again explain agent that it is not a car that we wanted to rent and was quoted. However, Europcar refused to replace the car and provide the car that was rented. Agent explained me that AWD is 2WD is the same car. As we did not have any other option and did not want to waste our time with such incompetent people, we had to take a car that we were given.
Few day later the broken bottom car cover was touching the road and creating noise and potential danger for the other drivers on the road in case if the cover fall off the car. I have called the rental company and informed them that I cannot drive car in that condition and they have to replace the car. They promised to call me back in 15 min but nobody call me in hours and nobody was answering my call. I had to call from different phone and Europe car agent answered right away and of course that told me that they will call me in 15 min and tell me when they will replace the car and as before did not call me and they stop answering phone. Next day I sent emails to three different email addresses and left the messages for main Europcar office but nobody was answering.
After that I found 1-800 number that I call and lady on the other end assure me that Europcar Costa Rica will definitely call me and replace the car and they did replace the car by the end of the second day. I did not drive car for two days and Europcar agent promised to reimburse two day of rental. However, they have not done it. They were answering me that they are working on it and then told me they cannot reimburse it and offered me two free day rental next time. I have asked now to provide me a rental for two days free and now answer. At the pickup airport at Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mex., I was charged 7.50 USD each day for declining the company offered insurance because I already purchased Expedia’s $11.00 USD per day. I was given a Chevy which has approximately 45000KM and the agent who checked me out took photo of the vehicle both inside and out and obviously there are many imperfection all over. After finishing all the documentation, A $ 7500 USD security deposit was required.
Now that three weeks since I returned the car, the 7500 charge still show up in my statement as pending which according the the bank, the car company can demand payment anytime and the bank will have to pay. By this time, I know I am dealing shady operators so I canceled my card and ask for a new one. The nightmare begins when I return the car and again over 20 photo were taken and they discovered a new small scratch on the front bumper which was determined to be a 100 USD damage. When I ask for detail of the charge so that I can claim with my Expedia coverage, they produced a long damage statement which total $739.38 USD. Unless I pay up or I’ll miss my flight. These people know that because I can claim insurance, It will be an easy decision for me to pay! I am still working to straighten out this mess. I am writing this complaint, not only to show my disappointment on the overall customer support service, but also your lack of interest during the past months to address the issue. On Friday, 24/07/2020 my friend rented a car at Europcar’s location in Eindhoven centre. Long story short, the car had a breakdown failure while we were in Germany, which Europcar attributes to us due to wrong fuel usage. This is something which baffles us, since we are sure we used the correct fuel, at least the one that was on the car’s sticker. We cannot prove otherwise, so we’ll leave it as is.
After break down and calling Europcar on Saturday 25th evening, we were redirected to Allianz and then later to Peugeot, given that the car was under Peugeot’s warranty. After quite an effort to get the correct support, we manage to get assistance called by Peugeot. ADAC diagnose was a broken spark inside the motor, and car could not be fixed. A trailer was called and the Peugeot assistance told us that transportation will be arranged to go back to holiday location. The car was tolled but transportation had to be arranged by us – first surprise.
Following more calls to Peugeot, we were told that a car would be arranged for us at 07:00 in the morning of Monday 27/07/2020, nothing available for Sunday 26th. The car was not present at 07:00 and we got no call informing of such change – second surprise. We were also told by that the car needed to be returned to be returned to Germany. This of course would not be possible, since we had to return to the Netherlands – third surprise.
Contacting Europcar once more and explaining the situation, we were told to wait while people worked on the case. After multiple calls with a need for me to keep on calling to collect feedback of the status, around 12:00 we were redirected to Eurocross services and we were proposed to be proactive looking for a deal. You have read it correctly, we were at this time aligning 2 parties together and we were the customer. From our initially agreed time to have a car (07h00), it took us many calls, alignment and extra trips (taxi paid by us) to arrive at another Europcar’s office around 18h00, 1h30min away from our location.
In the end, after such a long day (and weekend) of trying to get the situation fixed, we finally got another rental car at 18h00. We have not included the numerous calls we had to have between Allianz, Europcar and Eurocross. It still amazes me how from broken-down car on Saturday evening, Europcar could not provide an alternative until Monday 18h, and only after a lot of pushing from us. For me, Europcar is now only a low-tier rental car company name, with low quality and low coverage in the countries they officially operate in, like Germany and The Netherlands. I could have not expected worser service.

I reserved a car with Fox in Cancun, Mexico. I used to rent with Fox in the USA and have always had a good business relationship with them. Apparently they have merged or were bought out by Europcar. What a disaster. If I would have been aware of this I would have never rented from them. Ten years ago, Europcar in Mexico illegally tried to charge me (unsuccessfully) for damaging their car. On this particular trip ie on 11/16/2020, I had a Mid-size SUV reserved, a Dodge Journey. Upon arrival they refused to give me what I had reserved and tried to give me a Chevy Trax. We all know the difference, so let’s not play stupid on this. Then they jacked the price of the car up by over 300%. Yes, I have a picture of the new contract, as I am sure they will also lie about this.
Europcar said they had to charge me for all the insurances, that it was their policy. I assume that is also a lie as I cannot find any such policy in writing. I explained my AMX business card would cover everything, but the other party liability and I was willing to purchase that. The salesperson was very confrontational and refused. He said I either take out all their insurance or I put a hold on my credit card in the amount of $15,000 USD. I even called AMX and had the insurance department explain to Europcar that they would be covering the insurance, but again Europcar refused. I asked to talk to a manager, but none was available. After continuing this line of questioning, they said there was a female supervisor there, but I was not allowed to talk to her.
After 2 hours of lies and harassment I went back to the airport and had Budget pick me up. The salespeople at Budget remembered me from last month and were glad to have my business again. The biggest liar award goes to the rep at Europcar was Andres **. This experience was nothing more than to remind me what a corrupt and unethical business Europcar operates. I talked to some of my business associates in Cancun and they laughed at me, telling me everyone in Mexico knows Europcar is a scam. To make matters worse it was closing time and when I got to the car the fuel tank was half empty. I went back but the counter was already closed so not only did I lose 3.5 hours but I also lost 30 euros. I should have stopped using them right then and there but stupidly I decided to try one more time. On the second rental I received a defective car that was making noise and I had to return it. Unfortunately, I also received a speeding ticket during the rental term. I paid DGT in Spain directly for the fine with my credit card, Europcar had nothing to do with administering the payment. When it was time to return the car I returned the car on time but the person working the counter did not want to be bothered with me and told me to just drop the keys in the dropbox.
A few days later I received a revised invoice and they charged me about 100 extra euros for 2 additional days because the time of return was not recorded as Saturday but rather on Monday. After many, many emails and much stress and after receiving at least 6 different invoices I finally received the correct charge, however they then added another charge. They are fraudulently charging me a fine administration fee for a fine that I paid myself and not through their company. I am now opening a dispute with my credit card company and I will be posting reviews of my experience to warn others. Upon my return to the UAE and being able to see my Credit Card Statement I saw a huge amount deducted from my credit card. I queried this with Europcar El Calafate and indeed it was them who deducted US$1,665 from my Credit Card without authorization. This is totally unacceptable. Nobody can be held responsible for what a government decides to do in these situations. Airlines, Cruise Ships, Hotels all had to refund their customers. How can Europcar just decide on this deduction with no consideration for the situation?
I trust you will consider this situation unprecedented and refund the unauthorized deduction. I will go to great lengths to make everybody aware of unfair dealings at Europcar if this is not resolved. I thought OK I'm in a foreign country and they drive on the wrong side, I'd better make sure I'm properly insured, even though I'd already paid, I paid again. Had a great vacation, took the car back, no tickets, no accidents, no problem. 6 months later Europcar charged my credit card again, almost the same amount bar a few $'s.. couldn't even get anybody on the phone to do anything about it. Filed a chargeback with my credit card company and am waiting to see if I get my money back. I would avoid this company like the plague, didn't get the car I booked, rude customer service and then a second charge for almost $300 6 months after I rented from them.. I hope this company is not indicative of UK rental companies.

Europcar man took total advantage of us and was over friendly which made us trust him and he in a conniving manner persuaded me to sign for all sorts of add ons that I definitely did not require. I thought he was talking about the ones that I had purchased on the FULL PROTECTION so I signed. The company should not employ such people who are pulling the wool over people’s eyes. It looked like he works on commission as he was determined to add on items we had already purchased with a third party at BOOKING.COM. I have tried to contact Europcar and the customer service is appalling. I said to him “where should I sign” and he pointed to all these extras that I hadn’t asked for nor required! Clever man? It has cost me a fortune and trebled my initial cost of hiring a car with the company.
I have read in detail (on Europcar's Facebook page) that it is a common problem that customers experience with Europcar and if I worked there I would try and eradicate this type of upselling when customers are exhausted and trust the agent. It is a terrible reflection ON Europcar staff and company. Isn’t it awful to think that agents have access to customer's credit cards and can surprise them with all these charges? When I go back to Heathrow I will look for him as he has caused me great distress. He also conveniently scribbled his name where it says PRINT NAME clearly. Also he DID NOT warn us that there was an additional driver fee. £116.67 plus 20% VAT. The only thing I agreed to was the FUEL tank option so I am due £369.92.

I rented a car for a month in fall of 2019 from Europcar pickup in Manchester. Not only was there heavy sales pressure at the time of pickup (Manchester Airport) but following the return there were a string of toll bills & parking charges, which I'd thought I'd paid while on the road. Of course there were late fees and Europcar service charges. I no choice but to pay them, even after exchanging emails in an attempt to negotiate. That was all finally resolved in December 2019.
Then, on March 20, 2020 I was contacted by my credit card company that Europcar was trying to charge my car for the entire amount of the rental. I declined the charge and cancelled that credit card. Within 2 days I received in my email 2 new invoices from Europcar. One was a credit notice indicating that it would credit the amount the other with the original invoice with a new number. The invoices were not completely correct though and suspicious looking.
I sent an email to Europcar customer service to let them know about the attempted fraud and the response I got was stunning. It explained that they had "thoroughly checked my rental information and found out that that we amend the invoice of our rental partner rental cars. Any amendments in their invoice will affect your rental information. In light to the information mentioned above, I can confirm that there are no further charges nor further changes in to your rental invoice occur. Please be advise that your account will experience a full refund of the rental charges and recharge the same amount within 3-10 working days as this is our banking process with this process the rental information of our rental partner will amend this explain the charges happened in your account. I do apologise for all of the inconvenience that happened. I do hope this email answers your query."
Needless to say I have no intention of giving this company my new credit card information to complete any transactions. I really wanted to share though as the scam seems to involve even Europcar customer service.

Thieves! Beware! London Heathrow - EuropCar - Terrible Service - Complete Rip Off. They More than Doubled the Price at the counter at Heathrow - Agent spoke in circles avoiding direct answers and refused to acknowledge our insurance and refused to give us a car unless we bought their insurance (at 5 times the price for less coverage) from her and constantly refused to give us a total including our original rate pre-paid. She kept evasively talking about one thing when we were asking about another to deliberately confuse us - a real professional con artist.
Rather than helping us - after a ten hour flight - with another 7 hour drive ahead of us - she chose to deliberately take advantage of our fatigue and need to get on the road to arrive at our destination before midnight.... She chose, instead to completely rip us off. I would NEVER EVER USE THEM EVER AGAIN - COMPLETE CON ARTISTS - Deliberately deceiving and in our opinion Steeling hundreds of pounds and dollars with each fraudulent transaction
BEWARE!!! We would rate EuropCar a big fat ZERO if we could - but to write this warning review - we had to give them 1 star (the only good thing was the car itself). They also used an exorbitantly higher than the banks or visa exchange rate when charging our card in Cad rather than in British Pounds adding an additional $100 plus to the bill that already was more than double what we were quoted when we booked and prepaid for our car rental.
We had chosen a rental car over the train because there were 3 of us and it would have been more economical based on our quote - but in the end the train would have been way way way cheaper!!! Don't use this Company - They will completely Scam you !!!! We are three Adults all working for the Travel Industry with at least 60 years experience between us at the Airport and no strangers to the ins and outs of travelling... But, none of us have never seen such horrific swindling and evasive persuasion tactics to gauge people and deliberately confuse them with what we three all agree was out and out LYING by the Europcar Agent at Heathrow Airport.

Rented a car from Europcar in Austria for 10 days. Instead of getting a bill for agreed upon $608 I got a bill for $1,745. They claimed that the difference in $1,137 was to fix supposed "damages" to the vehicle. Turns out there were some scratches on one rim and a 2-centimeter minor scratch on the passenger side of the front bumper. Those were there before I took possession of the car. Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures.
I went online and found identical rim for about $200. As far as the scratch - instead of a 3-minute buffing job they supposedly replaced the entire front bumper (!!!) as a way to fix this scratch. Whether they did or didn't - I'll never know. The bottom line - they charged me $1,137 for something that at most should have been $300-$400 charge.
Corresponding with the Service Office didn't do anything - they just don't care as long as they got paid. They exhibit zero interest in retaining their customers or addressing their concerns. I will be distributing this review onto as many sites as I can. Word of caution: before renting from this company TAKE THOROUGH PICTURES (VIDEO PREFERRED) for both the inside and outside of the vehicle - every inch of it.

I hired a car from Europcar (France) from 15th of Feb 2020 to 18th of Feb 2020 but they charged me for total 6 days with a dump excuse. On 18th of Feb 2020, I went to their office to return the car but the parking area was full and the office was close, thus I parked the car in the basement. I tried to contact to the helpline number and informed them that I have parked the car in the basement. Plus, I also received confirmation in an hour from Europcar side that the car has been received. I have taken all the pictures as proof and send it to them via email. But their excuse was terrible:
“L'agence ne nous autorise pas à vous rembourser car, comme vous avez laissé les clés dans le véhicule, une personne sans abri a profité pour rester dans le véhicule et l'agence n'a pas pu disposer du véhicule jusqu'au 20 Février. Comme c'était votre responsabilité de restituer les clés soit à l'agence, soit dans la boîte prévue à ces effets, ils refusent le remboursement des jours que le véhicule n'a pas été disponible suite au problème décrit.”
English Version: “The agency does not allow us to reimburse you because, as you left the keys in the vehicle, a homeless person took advantage to stay in the vehicle and the agency could not dispose of the vehicle until February 20 . As it was your responsibility to return the keys either to the agency or in the box provided for these purposes, they refuse to reimburse the days that the vehicle was not available due to the problem described.”
The question is how someone can go inside the car when the car was locked? Now, they are giving the excuse that the car was open and it was used by a beggar for 2 days, thus I have to pay for additional 2 days. I was a victim of the Europcar, won’t recommend using Europcar in France or any other part of the world.

I had prepaid my rental through Autoeurope, starting in Queenstown, ending in Auckland. On the voucher it specifically said $0 One way fee or something to that effect. Crossing the Cook Strait you need to return your car in Picton and pick up another car in Wellington - it is still considered one rental though. In Wellington they printed a rental contract that stated I had picked up the car in Queenstown (which I did) and returned in Auckland (which I did).
4 weeks after the rental I get a $1000 one way fee (plus tax and other charges = $1175) charge slapped on my credit card. I'm trying to contest the charges, no reaction. I contest the charges through my credit card and wite lengthy letters to Autoeurope and Europcar. I get my money and never heard from them again. 1 year later I try to rent with Europcar in Australia and it turns out I'm blacklisted (Do Not Rent list) which I didn't even know. Another year later I want to rent in France and call ahead and they tell me I'm still blacklisted. I call Autoeurope and they say the DNR database didn't get updated back then but now it's all solved but they can't help me... so no help from them either. It was not my fault that the auditor in Europcar NZ was incompetent and didn't figure out that the rental car was returned in the right place. This doubled the cost of the rental. I subsequently learned this was not the case. Theft insurance is not "mandatory". I reached out to Europcar who agreed this was sharp business practice but stated since I rented the car they would continue to charge me. I reserved a car in Germany prior to my trip from the US. I filled out all the paperwork online and arranged for the car to be available at the train station when I arrived. I was assured through email that all was in order. The car was not at the train station when I arrived so I had to take a taxi to the rental agency in Freiburg. The agent had not saved any of my information for the reservation so I had to start all over. This took over an hour to redo the reservation. I did not get the car that I had requested and was downgraded to next available. I returned the car an hour before it was due in the contract. I returned it clean, undamaged and full of gas as per the contract. An employee inspected the car and confirmed that all was in order. The agent confirmed that there would be no extra charges and printed my invoice. This should have been the end of the transaction.
Three days later, after I had left the country, I received an email stating that they had charged my credit card for an extra 95 euros. The entire email was in German so I used Google translator to see what the extra charge was for, but there was no explanation. The email came from a "no reply" address so I was not able to question it. I tried to find a phone number to call them but there is no phone number listed anywhere. I filled out a request form on their website to have someone call me but that never happened. There is no way to discuss this issue with anyone at Europcar.
I had no recourse except to dispute the charge with my credit card company. They opened a dispute case and credited my card for the disputed amount. Europcar never responded to the credit card company's inquiries so the case was closed. Now, nine months later I received a letter from Europcar, all in German of course, demanding the 95 euro payment. They refuse to communicate with me in English, they cannot explain the nature of the extra charge, they do not allow me to respond to them in any way, and they have been dishonest with me throughout the transaction. I believe their actions to be intentionally fraudulent and criminal and firmly believe that they need to be investigated by whatever governing authority that has that responsibility.

So a month after coming back home we got an email from Europcar that we need to pay a fine and and they would pay it for us for a %20 fee.
I contacted the city of Madrid and paid the fine online. I sent an email to Europecar saying that the employee never mentioned that the rules of center of Madrid has changed in 2018 and no car can be driving there without authorization. How a tourist can possibly know about this and what kind of rent a car wouldn't give this information to their clients. This is the worst experience I have… This is the worst experience I have ever had with a car rental company. My Mother had just passed away and the LGW North location was closed at 9AM in the morning. I had to get a taxi to the South terminal. After having a 12hr flight all I wanted was to get my rental and drive the 3 HRS to my mum's home. The rep was only interested in upselling me to a Mercedes. To which I politely declined and stated I was tired and had all insurances via my credit card.
The rep then proceeded to hold the paperwork and state sign here here and here. I asked I am not signing for any extras correct. He held the document and in his poor English said he said no. So I signed 4 boxes. I trusted this individual as I was upset and tired. Now I have a 300 pound bill more than what I agreed upon because I took this disgraceful individual's word for it. My only mistake was trusting the rep. This is a complete sham and a disgrace to the rental business. Don't get a car from Europcar. I will continue to post in social Media to spread the word as all Jane Roselyn ** the Cs service rep could basically say, "Well you signed the document." Our son, a University student with little available funds, took a careful route and hired a car with a “big name” when he booked a short trip to Portugal to attend his grandfather’s 90th birthday party. He expressed a wish for a hybrid, but on arrival shortly before midnight on Friday, Europcar informed him that only fully electric was available. They provided him with instructions as to how to recharge the car using a Europcar plastic card. He had a 2 hour drive ahead of him, which turned into a 4 hour nerve wracking trip on his own. The reason.... The plastic charge card given to him by Europcar did not work, so he was unable to recharge along the way. He had nobody to telephone and was understandably shaken when we saw him the following morning. Fortunately, we attended his grandfather’s party at a restaurant which offered a free charge of the battery.
Shortly before leaving for the airport one day later, the battery charge showed that the distance possible to drive on the most economic setting, fell about 5km short of the airport. This assumed not using windscreen wipers, radio, air conditioning etc. As he was due to drive to the airport alone to return the car and catch his plane, we felt it was not prudent for him to drive the car, given the vehicle’s estimate of driving distance. Europcar was not reachable as it was Sunday and their local branch and telephone lines were closed. We contact the emergency number given which was an independent tow company, not linked to Europcar. We then had a few minutes to organise a taxi to take our son a great distance to the airport.
My wife and I returned the car documents including the faulty charge card to the Coimbra branch of Europcar the following morning as soon as they opened. Rather than solving the problem, they informed us that as they do not hire any electric vehicles from the Coimbra branch, they could not check the plastic charge card and could do nothing to assist with any of the problem. Cutting a long story short, Europcar directly charged the towing cost to our son’s debit card (without informing him first), they also charged an additional Euros 50 to his card for the non-return of car documents, despite the fact that these were returned at 9am on Monday morning to Coimbra’s branch.
Following this I telephoned Europcar several times with no success in getting the problem sorted. I was informed that I should write to a complaints department. Emails went back and forth for a couple of months. I felt that my son had paid for a rental car and was provided with a different vehicle to that requested. He was given a faulty card which meant he was unable to recharge the car. In my eyes this is clearly wrong and means that the product hired and paid for, was faulty.
Europcar’s blunt response was that the car was checked and works. They also state that there were no problems with the previous rental and the following rental, so that it must have been ok. The message I am getting from Europcar is that we must obviously be lying about the problem and that hat we should go away. I requested the name of the person writing to me and details of the head office so that I could take my complaint to a location which would take the complaint seriously. No response from Europcar Lisbon. I tried to contact the UK office in which country the car was hired, but was informed I had to contact the Lisbon office as the car was collected there. Snubbed again when I tried to contact Lisbon Europcar.
I had a different opinion of Europcar before this situation and I find it a real shame that my family has not been given proper attention and that money was debited to my son’s card not only for the towing cost, but also for non-return of documents (the latter was subsequently returned after several calls from me to Coimbra and to Lisbon). I will not be giving up, but I am stuck as to where to turn to next.
A disappointed family.Eric **

I am (was) a regular Europcar customer (5-6 times a year for a week or so each time, for a few years) from the Heathrow Europcar branch. I was really pleased with their friendly service, their cars and their prices. However, I was recently charged with damage to wheel rims. I hadn't done this, but also hadn't checked the car when I picked it up as I dealt with them so often and they were usually so good about checking and noting car damage before renting. Initially they said they would check the video from the day, then afterward said there was no such thing as a video to determine the state of the car on site exit. Fine - it was my fault for not examining the car myself. I am insured anyway so the charges would be reimbursed to me.
Then, around the same time, my credit card was stolen. Shortly after I received a rude and threatening letter from Europcar (unsigned). They had leapt straight to the conclusion that I had cancelled my credit card to avoid a £100 charge, even though they also knew I was covered by card insurance! How insane is that? I called the company and spoke to someone named Will - who was very rude, and said he didn't care if I didn't use the company again, he would not issue an apology. Nor would he put me through to a supervisor. All this despite my assurances I had no intention of attempting to defraud anyone, and as soon as I had a new card issued, I would pay the charge.
I have just now paid the charge on the phone with the same chap Will, who still refuses to apologise for the letter or his rudeness on the phone. Because of this, I shall no longer be using Europcar. A shame that one person so angry and petty can ruin the customer experience so totally, but there it is. I recommend that everyone take the time to photograph and document every inch of their car when they pick it up. Who knows how many times they will charge different people for the same cosmetic damage. It is quite a scam and obviously more lucrative than keeping regular customers.

They falsely claimed that our credit card did not cover CDW, tried to sell us unnecessary insurance, tried to get us to sign a (disclaimer?) form that contained several false statements. They claimed that we should have made the booking directly through Europcar Birmingham. Eventually, possibly because we had plenty of time and would not capitulate or go away, they cancelled our original contract and wrote us another under the same terms as the original, but for substantially less cost. Utterly bizarre.
After this, we made sure to photograph every inch of the car on receipt and return as insurance against false damage claims. My husband and I reserved a car for ten days (in August 2019) with Europcar through Auto Europe, at a cost of $1,060 US dollars. After a long flight from LA to Lisbon we arrived at the crowded Europcar Lisbon airport window to pick up our already paid for rental car. After 2 hours, our number gets called and the Europcar agent tells me that our reservation was canceled. The Europcar agent explains that they notified Auto Europe and we in turn should’ve been notified. I asked the agent how this could be possible when the car had already been paid for. Then he offers us another car for an additional $1,700 plus a deposit of $300 that he assures us will be refunded. Weary, tired and vulnerable we sign up for an upgraded rental car that we didn’t want, at over 2 times the price.
Once we returned to U.S. we went back and forth with both companies (each pointing the finger back at the other) in an attempt to recover some of the cost. Additionally we have been trying to get our deposit back, as we returned the car with no issues. It’s now Jan 2020 and we still do not have our deposit. Europcar told us that the credit card company keeps blocking the refund (the money was easy to take however). Our credit card company informed us that they would 1) never block a refund and that 2) no attempt from Europcar has been made to refund any money. In the meantime we spent more on this rental car (over $3,000 US dollars) than we did on our airfare, an excessive amount.
I highly caution anyone who decides to book with either company. It appears to be a successful business model to take advantage of vulnerable travelers by lying and upselling customers to scam them out of more money. I can’t believe that either company is allowed to conduct their business with so little integrity and a complete lack of ethics. My entire family travels a lot and we will never use either company again.

Seems there are some positive reviews and some not in regards to Europcar, mine obviously is not and I shall NEVER rent from them again... ONCE BITTEN... Peter.

I had a very unpleasant experience with Europcar in Bordeaux Airport, France. After having paid the rent cost, I picked up the vehicle and provided my debit card for the deposit. The deposit of EUR 400.00 was taken (not just authorized) from my card, but it was never returned to me in full!!! I was charged for a premium insurance without my agreement. As I paid the basic insurance while booking the car, I did not expect to be charged 81.00 euros on the top of the cost. Furthermore, Europcar withheld it from my deposit rather than notifying me during the pick up. I did not speak French, but I questioned that amount on the invoice. Their employee assured me that nothing would be taken from my card and full deposit would be paid back. As it turned out, that was a pure lie!
I dropped the car off. There was no problem with the vehicle. However it took them one week to return the payment, and instead of EUR 400.00 I only received 319.00. I tried to contact their customer service many times, but their responses were unhelpful and time wasters. Nobody really read my complaints, and I kept receiving the same stupid message that the payment was according to the invoice. They completely overlooked my point regarding their fraudulent approach by taking extra charge from clients' deposits. Please be aware of these fraudsters! If possible, never hire their cars. They cannot provide what you book on the website anyway, but that was another downside.

If Europcar's quote is the cheapest then they may use underhanded tactics to recoup money. For us it was by adding an upgrade charge WITHOUT telling us about the charge. Oh, the figure was on the agreement, nestled in among many other figures, in small print AND NOT in English. If you choose to use Europcar then please, please, ask them to explain every figure on the agreement before signing. Don't worry about the queue of people behind you, in fact tell them that you've heard reports that Europcar have hidden charges on the agreement and that they must check too. Once you've signed the agreement Europcar's customer service will not accept any complaint, no matter how many witnesses you have that you were not verbally notified of additional charges. I hope you enjoy your holiday.

I rented a car in Rome Fiumicino Airport in July 2019. Arrived to collect the car late in the evening so the Europcar representative didn't check for any of the damages. I believed this was standard procedure. When I delivered the car back, the representative says there is damage to the car that was not there before. How can they state if nothing was checked at the time of pickup? He then asks me to write a statement about what happened, which I do and sign. A few days later I get charged 500€ for 1 scratch that I didn't do. Also receive a document with my signature saying that I admit that I did this damage to the car. This is stealing and producing fake documentation. Please avoid these scammers!

We rented online directly with Europcar, Rome in July 2019. When we arrived the model of car we reserved was not available and we were offered an alternate which was damaged, dirty inside and out and did not have a full tank of gas. We complained online a couple of times but to date have received no acknowledgement or reply.
A few months ago they double charged our credit card an administration fee for a supposed traffic ticket that was issued against our rental vehicle and they claimed we would receive the ticket directly from the police. When we emailed them inquiring about this, their explanation was inadequate. They charged our credit card again the same administration fee about a month later and our credit card company advised us to cancel our card and have a new one issued in order to prevent them from continuing to charge our credit card. To date we have yet to receive any traffic ticket from the Italian police. Stay away from this company - they are corrupt.

I recently rented a vehicle from Europcar at KLIA in Malaysia. The car plate number was **. (Model: Alza) Rental was from Dec 20, 2019 till Jan 04th 2020. Overall service was TERRIBLE! From the onset, the car was not washed and was very dirty and bad odor inside the car. Mind you I tried calling them from the time I drove out on all the numbers they provided me, but no one was answering the call and it was constantly going to voice mail. I somehow manage to get hold of the KLIA2 office and they told me they will get the Main office at KLIA to call me back but nothing was heard from them at all for the multiple times I have tried to reach them.
Problems with the car:
1. Not washed and dirty2. No water in the tank to clean the windshield
3. Front tires were in bad shape. An accident waiting to happen as the brakes was shuddering when applied and with the rainy weather, the car was also skidding.
4. I had to constantly visit the petrol station to top up the air for the front tires.
Although I cannot wholly blame the staff at KLIA, the full responsibility of the condition of the car lies with the management, who are a bunch of incompetent irresponsible bunch of idiots!!!! Here is a poorly maintained car, and nothing seems to be done by them to upgrade their vehicles. I have been an Europcar customer worldwide for some years now, but I now think I should take my business elsewhere. All I can say about the management at Europcar Malaysia, you are truly a bunch of irresponsible IDIOTS!!!!

Instead, they offered me a lower rate car with no offer for reimbursement or compensation. The car did not have the right seatbelts to be able to safely include a car seat for my toddler. A few days later, they brought the car I was supposed to rent but it was an old version (even less safe for a car seat). The worst part was that they just didn't care. There was no attempt to fix the issue at the counter or online (I sent a couple of messages in the Europcar website and I have not received any response).

Before I provide the details let me see that I have made many trips to Mexico and I’ve rented a car every single time usually with Budget or Enterprise and that all amounts stated are in U.S. DOLLARS. We did the rental car reservation when we booked our flight on Southwest Airline’s website and so expected this to be a reputable company. IT IS NOT. We reserved a midsize car for 7 days and were quoted, in writing, $114 and cents total. When we got to the counter we opted not to take the full insurance on the car because we have a credit card the covers it. They wanted to charge us $104 (U.S. DOLLARS) per day and would not allow us to decline insurance unless we agreed to reserve a security deposit on our credit card of almost $12,000 (U.S. DOLLARS). The rental with insurance would cost us $842 plus additional taxes.
We canceled our reservation it’s and rented from another agency. Because you’re a walking last minute booking we still paid $752 with the other agency, but we’re not gonna get in to the scam that your Europcar was trying to pull. This expense forced us to cut our planned activities during this trip in half and ruined our vacation. These people were to try this in the United States they will be shut down and their owners will be sued into bankruptcy and most likely spend some time in jail.

Last October I rented a Europcar car at Tromsø airport for 5 days. I returned the keys convinced that I had not done any damage to the car; after 4 hours I received a communication via email saying that after washing they found a scratch under the rear bumper, complete with a photo attached. The damage was very minimal, I thought I could have caused it without realizing; we had traveled several kilometers on unpaved roads under repair and it could have been a little larger pebble to have peeled off the paint.
I was ready to pay what was due but I did not receive any communication reporting the amount of the damage. After a couple of weeks, and without any proof, the full amount of the deductible, 9500 NOK, almost € 1000, was withdrawn from the credit card. I wrote to the Tromsø office and they simply replied that the repair costs in Norway are very high, to my subsequent request for a more correct evaluation I had no answer. I then wrote a protest email on Europcar.com website and another one at the Rome office (customerserviceitaly@europcar.com) but I only received automatic "no reply" responses. I do not have photographs of the wheel to prove that I didn’t do the damage, so reluctantly opened a claim with via my travel insurance for the car rental. I’m convinced that either the damage was there from a previous rental OR, more likely, someone else damaged the wheel after the return and Europcar decided to pin it on the last renter, betting that they wouldn’t be able to contest it as I can’t. Europcar did not immediately cooperate with my insurance company to provide the necessary details for card services to issue the check, but eventually did.
In the process even though they knew that this was being handled via claim, Europcar attempted to charge my card (thankfully the charge was blocked automatically by Chase as it was international). The check was issued at the end of November. Europcar continues to harass me via email instead of reaching out to the issuing company directly because they say they haven’t received the check yet. They’ve threatened a collection agency and are demanding a stop put on the check and that the insurance company complete a wire transfer. They continue to refuse to reach out to the insurance company (card benefit services through my credit card) about this. There was no incident with the wheel while I rented the car.
A month after they accepted the return and charged my final payment and sent the invoice, they decided to say I damaged the vehicle. Now they’re threatening me with a collection agency, harassing me, and continue to refuse to work with the insurance. Never, I will never rent from them ever again, and frankly they don’t care.

From what I can tell, at minimum, they are unable to charge me properly. At worst, they're actively trying to engage in fraudulent behavior--I don't think this is the case to be honest, but it's frustrating to the point where I am on the verge of cancelling my credit card.

To add insult to injury I was charged over mileage on the return. The contract clearly stated 800km, but I returned a day early and they said it was now 700km. They take advantage of people getting off long haul flights.
About two months after my rental, I get a charge that put my account overdrawn making me incur additional charges. They had sent a letter but it was received weeks after the charge. No one told me about the charge on the return. Apparently there is a small dent, in the pictures they sent I can barely see anything and know that this do not come from myself. The reserve light had not ever come on, so there was 7+ liters in the tank when I added the 42 liters. Total fuel in the tank at that time was at least 49+ liters. Average fuel consumption is normally 28 km per liter. Thus, there was at least 49, and as much as 54 liters of fuel in the tank when I returned the car.
I asked the attendant where I returned the car if the fuel level was okay. He responded that it looked good. He marked 7/8 on the paper and said all was fine. The next day I received my invoice and the charge showed adding 21 liters of fuel, plus service charge, for a total fee of 52.98 Euros. I acknowledge the fuel gauge showed to be on the very edge of the full line but would have gladly taken the car and topped off if I thought necessary.
On 17 November I received an email with my statement of return. The details were somewhere on the enclosure to the message - - - - which is 250 pages in total. Later the same date I received via email my official invoice noted as paid. Subsequent to that date I received two requests for feedback on my rental experience. On both occasions I sent comments similar to what I have written above, to include asking for an acknowledgement of receipt of my feedback and an explanation of the refuel charge.
On 26 November I was back in the Barcelona Airport and visited with an agent of EuropCar at the same office as I initially rented my car. Then Europcar chimed in saying that unless this was either (1) officially put under review or (2) I paid the fine, Europcar would charge me for an "admin" fee. I immediately contacted both Slough Council and Europcar to begin the dispute process. Regardless of what they pledged to do, Europcar still hit my card without waiting for the ruling. I had to dispute the charge on my credit card and have now received notification from Slough Council that they have absolved me of the fine and considered the case closed. I have also notified Europcar that this has been resolved in my favor and sent them a copy of Slough Council's letter.

One month after I returned the car they had an adjuster look over the car and write up how much the repair would cost- not an actual repair, just a estimate. I went online and rejected the claim, but never got a response, only an automatic response that they are very busy and it will take weeks to get back to me.
In the meantime they send me 2 more letters requesting payment, I responded each single time, but have gotten no response to my rejection. Now in Germany as soon as the rental company returns the deposit back to you, the rental agreement has ended and no more claims can be made. Still, Europcar is harrassing me with the bill. I looked online and found a page that says for a wheel rim cover it's 20 Euro that the rental company will have you pay immediately upon return of the car, which was not done in my case. I also came across an article that Europcar fraudulently overcharges customers in the UK for so called damages to the car. Which they are trying to do with me. Stay away from Europcar! They tease you with great rates, but you will pay so much more in the end. It's not worth it!!!!

SUCH A SHAME! I have used Europcar on a few occasion in Europe and I found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful and had no real complaints. During my last trip to Marseille, I rented a car from the Europcar airport branch and upon the return there were some markings on the car. As I have picked the car up at night, these marks were not recorded so they may have been there or not. When these few marks were pointed out by the lady at Europcar upon return of the car, she asked me if I was responsible. At no point during the rental had I had any scrapes or scuffs so from my point of view these marks were pre-existing, which is what I relayed to her. No-one likes to pay more for services than you have to, however, if I damage something I will always except responsibility and report it and pay for it out of common decency and an the possession of an ethical moral compass.
After a month of my return to the UK I received a bill (Direct Debit from my Visa Card) for nearly as much as the initial rental due to ‘damage’. The very fact that the lady and I had agreed that the fault was not mine was why I was so shocked to receive a bill and secondly I am so insulted that Europcar had the audacity to question my integrity that I won’t use them again.

Rented a VW Golf for 6 weeks which was a good vehicle. Upon picking up the car I advised them that I may extend the rental by 1 or 2 extra days which was agreed that I would pay for each extra day a certain amount. I actually extended by 1 day only but was charged for 2 days as the car was returned 2 minutes outside their 30 minute grace period for being late according to Europcar even though my rental agreement said 3 pm and the car was returned at 2.58 pm which is what I had to go by.
They also charged for 42 days of roadside assistance $350.00 which I never asked for or agreed to. Even worse was the fact that I returned the car full of fuel after fuelling up at the last possible fuel stop at Fiumicino Rome Airport. I would have used 1 liter of fuel for the last 8kms after refueling but somehow Europcar managed to find the car needed 13 liters of fuel. They just charge your credit card with whatever they like, once they have taken a copy of your card you are at their mercy.
Their customer service dept is in the Philippines and it is impossible to speak to someone of authority to ask for copies of charges etc. It took 3 weeks to get anything and in the end all the charges still stood. There is no reasoning and you have no comeback whatsoever. They must be ripping people off left right and centre. Definitely would not rent from Europcar again, they are THIEVES! We rented a car through Expedia, arrived in Frankfurt only to find out our choice was not available (a frequent occurrence with rental companies). We accepted an upgrade at extra cost. The car was great, good mileage. Upon return a small 2 inch scrape was noted on a rim. The return agent noted that it was there when we accepted the car so we didn’t think anything more of it. Almost 6 months later we received a curtly written notice of damages and amount owed of just under $1,000 Canadian. An itemized list of work done to repair the rim was also included where they charged for valve stems, front and rear alignment etc.
Firstly, we did not create the scratch on the rim. Secondly, it does not cost $1000 to repair a rim, more like $250 maximum and it certainly never includes a rear wheel alignment. I will never rent from this company again and in the future will take a video of any rental vehicle upon acceptance and return also, I will keep all paperwork for at least one year after return. Finally, we contacted our credit card company and invoked their insurance policy regarding rental vehicles which, more than 1 year after the rental return, paid the damage claim. The lesson to be learned here is to always check and verify everything, keep all paperwork and do not trust any company. We are all vulnerable to scams so, behave accordingly.

Absolutely disgusted with the level of service provided by Europcar Naas. I was charged €650 for a small scratch which I pointed out to them on returning the car. The female staff member acknowledged how minor it was and said that it would be likely I wouldn’t even be charged for it. She mentioned that scratches less than a €2 coin in size are not charged. I was then sent an invoice for €650 with €420 of that listed as ‘labour’. I have photos of the scratch and have been advised by repair centres and other car rental companies that I am being significantly overcharged.
I found a 2019 Europcar Light Damage Schedule online which confirms that the price of a scratch this minor should be no more that €150, not 4 times this price. I have been repeatedly ignored by the branch manager and Europcar customer service. I will never be using such a dishonest company who engages in misleading practices and treats their customers so poorly. I had another booking with Europcar Naas at Christmas which I have now cancelled.

Do not rent a car from EUROPCAR! They exercise questionable practices taking advantage of tourists. We rent a car via Expedia for one day on Santorini Island in Greece. The rent costed $49.54 with $11.00 collision protection insurance included. When we arrived to the agency on the island, we were told that we had to buy full coverage insurance or they would freeze $10,000 on our credit card for two weeks. We didn’t have $10,000 on our credit card; it was our first day in Greece, so we assumed that it was a Greece policy and purchased the insurance for $99.99. (Total: one day rent of an economy car in Greece for $150!!) They gave us the “upgraded” car – a small SUV Nissan Pulsar with scratches on the rare bumper.
The car was pretty new and drove smoothly. We drove it for a day and returned on time. Upon return, they started acting as crooks making pictures of the car and they gave us a document to sign, which was done outside, in complete darkness. We felt that we were tricked; the agency just wanted to get full coverage insurance on the car in order to repair it. Later we rent a car in Athens in another agency, no $ 10,000 freeze was required (only $300 for the duration of the trip). It proved our suspicion about Europcar.

The person who checked us in said everything was fine and directed us to where we could pick up our booked taxi to our b&b. We were not issued a receipt (our mistake for not requesting. While waiting we observed our newly washed vehicle being driven to the general rental area. We went to our b&b and thought everything was fine until our credit card was billed for the extra day.
We turned in the car in the early afternoon but when we requested a copy of the invoice, it stated we turned it in the morning of the next day which was entirely false. We have been in contact with the booking agent but just keep getting the runaround. It was our mistake not to get a return receipt, but none was offered and were told everything was fine by the person checking us in. My advice is to be sure you request a receipt upon return as we feel we were totally ripped off by this company.

When I returned the car (Jun 30) the deposit amount was unblocked and at the same time Europcar withdrew about 524 Euro from my account. After 2 weeks I got an answer that this is an insurance payment. But I rejected any additional insurance and I KNOW that insurance should be paid at the reception during the car pick up. The sting is that Europcar charged us an administration fee of $51.75 for sending emails to Cardiff and us. Ouch! Europcar would not budge on this fee and both representatives REFUSED to transfer me to a manager. The patent response was that the administration fee was in the rental agreement. A few days later a receipt came in my husband’s email charging us for 13 liters of diesel, plus a refueling charge. However, the one agent at the desk refused to release it to me unless I purchased insurance not for the 2 days before my father came, but the entire time, even though my credit card and insurance covered me.
Thinking that we could sort this out when we returned the car, (and being tired from the overseas flight), I gave in. I have used Carhire multiple times but every time I use them from Dublin Airport without fail I receive unexpected charges. The staff are trained vultures clearly on commission. First experience, credit card fails to work so I need to pay full for insurance, fine. Second time CDW isn't included so I need to pay extortionate amount at pick up. As I appear angry with amount I am then advised of multiple price options. The angrier I get I am offered lower cost. How does that make sense? My only advice to customers is to get angry and they'll randomly give you reduced fees?? Third time I am fully prepared having paid for CDW upon booking and credit card ready to go. My pick up is a breeze. Upon drop off, surprise, surprise I am tackled with tank not returned full despite me filling to the point off clicking literally 3 minutes prior at petrol station located at airport.
As staff sees I am not happy with this he then brings me to front and points at a scuff mark on the underside of front bumper which I literally have to bend down and see. I receive a 420 euro fee for this which is absurd, if anyone was to inspect the car at pickup you would never have picked up on this mark. As mentioned I have rented cars all over the world and only ever have issues in Ireland, coincidence, I think not. I am always left with a sour taste leaving Ireland which is quite sad. It is obvious to me that they will do everything they can to get some money off you, either pushing you to pay huge insurance costs at pick up or taking whatever they can off you if you paid deposit. I have not talked much about the staff themselves but let's just say I feel they are for the most part the scum of the earth.

On arrival at the appointed time, we were told that there was no vehicle for us. We were then offered a larger vehicle at a higher price, when we refused we were offered a 8 - 10 seater Mercedes van that was banged up, with window chip and too huge for city driving. I was accused by their processing agent of having a dog in the back seat. I told the lady that the car was dirty on pickup and that I DID NOT have a dog in the car! We needed a car for our 16 day trip to Ireland. I went online to see what was available and was very much surprised at the low cost of car rentals in Ireland. Or so I thought… I had read that the Irish roads are very narrow, and often parking was hard to find, so I looked to Europcar.com to find me a proper rental. I looked to rent as small a car as I could. Ended up reserving a Ford Fiesta or equivalent with unlimited mileage for 13 days to be picked up in Dublin for the unbelievable price of $172.84! Driving on the left side of the road would be something new for me, and although I consider myself a good driver I knew that anything could happen, so I opted for the Collision Damage Waiver offered for the allotted time for an additional $143.00. Easy peasy!
We arrived in Dublin, spent two interesting days using public transportation and then on the day we were slated to leave for Belfast we went down to the Europcar office to pick up our car. Location of the rental offices were convenient to public transportation and the staff there was extremely friendly and helpful. The first thing that I was informed of (that was not mentioned in the online reservation site) was the fact that Ireland laws do not accept US purchased Collision Damage Waivers. The CDW for which I prepaid via the website was completely and totally ineffective and unnecessary. Europcar offered a local and highly recommended Collision, policy that I would have to pay extra for – 16 Euros/day. Then to make sure that we were covered for anything unforeseen possibly happening to the car such as a tree falling on it, or someone hitting it in a parking lot (which the CDW does not cover) we opted for the Complete Car Coverage package – 24 Euros/day.
Secondly, the rental staff member in questioning me regarding how far we were planning to drive noted that a small gasoline fueled car does not make the same sort of mileage as does a diesel fueled vehicle. And with the cost of gasoline being higher than the cost of diesel, we would save on refueling costs by renting a diesel. Being that they had no very small diesel powered cars available, the only choice being an very comfortable, quiet and powerful Audi A4 TDI, we had little choice but to rent the Audi. Obviously, the A4 rents at a higher cost than the Ford Fiesta – upcharge of 20 Euros/day.
Thirdly, because we were renting the car in the Republic of Ireland, but were planning on spending part of our trip up in Northern Ireland there is a charge for taking the automobile “out of the country” with a one time charge of 30 Euros for the rental. Add to those charges a one time Location Surcharge (whatever that is…) of 25 Euros, and a THW charge (whatever that is…) of 8 Euros per day. So adding all those extra charges to the standard 8.45 Euro per day charge for any rental, plus the 13.5% VAT tax on most but not all of the above, our grand total came to $1106.20 Euros.
Now I have to admit that prior to even starting to look for a car rental online, I was expecting the car rental for our trip to run somewhere around a thousand dollars simply from prior experiences in renting cars. So the fact that it ended up coming to a couple of hundred dollars over that was not the shock that it might have been to someone completely uninformed.
Also I have to say that despite the fact that the Audi A4 was a bit larger than what I had originally wanted, and it did take a little longer to get used to its larger width on those tiny country roads, and it was a bit tougher to park it in spaces that were designed for teeny tiny Euro cars, I enjoyed driving the A4 tremendously. It had a very comfortable interior, was extremely quiet on the road, had a staggering amount of power for passing and hill climbs and held the road like a race car. I do not regret renting it at all. And I did get a full refund from the organization that I purchased the US CDW coverage from once we returned to the US and I called and explained our situation. Could have avoided that whole part of the story had their website simply stated that any type of insurance bought in the US for a car rental in Ireland would not be honored there and a separate policy would have to be purchased there at extra cost.

On returning the car I had an absolutely nightmare. There was no damage to the car. Absolutely none. The collection clerk refused. She said somebody must have leaned against the car door. I did not have time to continue the argument because I had to check in. I did take out damage insurance so I was not too bothered. However I have now had £346 bill to my credit card that I have to claim back and I cannot contact anyone at Europcar. I have to do it by email for the details of the repair. When picking up the car, I pointed out the tire damages and was assured that the car is fully expected and safe to drive. However, it was failed to be sufficiently documented. While this was obvious that the tires would have been damaged when the rim was damaged, I got stuck with the charges of EUR 199. The Europcar team answered any Emails and the use of subcontractors cannot even provide information whom to contact. If you rent you need to pay attention to any detail, but they may find something other small detail to charge you for.

All was good until the car started smoking under the bonnet. We pulled over, got the kids out and called Europcar. Took 10 minutes to get through then waited 40 mins for tow truck. Tow truck took car and left us, we then were told it would be another hour for a taxi, so we arranged our own and then arranged our own transport to their office the next day. We were given another car which as we walked up to it was dirty and had the undertray hanging about 2cm above the ground. We rejected this car as it was unsafe and after 2 hours we left the branch with another dirty car. 30 miles down the road when we were going to pick up our kids we realised the car had no rear headrests, a key safety feature for children particularly. So we decided to complain, so far we have been offered a free upgrade on our next rental, as if we will ever use them again!

We travel the world, hiring cars regularly. Great experiences with Avis and National. Europcar at Exeter in England, and subsequently, Europcar corporate, are unscrupulous, thieving criminals. They double charged us, would not communicate, hung up on my wife three times, wasted hours and money. Eventually our travel agent lodged a credit card dispute with her bank, and three months later we finally have our money back. Europcar continued to protest and still haven’t contacted us. They couldn’t provide proof justifying two charges for the same car, same location, same surname. There’s so much hire car choice, don’t risk it with these thieves.

We rented through Expedia but upon picking up the car were told that we would need to pay an extra £750 for insurance for 15 days. After much negotiating and calls to our credit card and insurance companies we got that reduced it to £350. They cancelled the Expedia rental and initiated a new rental. The engine started smoking after about 80 miles of driving. We called Europcar but they said they could not deal with it. Instead they transferred us to the car manufacturer (Peugeot) who said that we would need to wait up to 3 hours for their assessor to arrive. We were under a mile from a different Europcar location but Europcar refused to send anyone to help until Peugeot had done their assessment.
After waiting for hours we were told we could drive the car the short distance to Europcar and request a replacement. Luckily we made it 5 minutes before closing and they had a car available. If not, I suppose they would have left us standing on the street with all of our luggage. When we returned the car, they confiscated our contract and promised an accounting by email. The accounting never came. Instead they waited until we were back in Canada and charged my credit card more than expected.
Be careful with this company. They have cars but service levels are terrible when there is a problem. If you book through Expedia, be aware that you may be quoted obscene insurance rates upon pickup of your car. Also, don’t be like us. Keep a copy of your contract and do not let them confiscate it. If they overcharge, you will need it to prove your case with them.

I have used Europcar several times in the UK but this time I had a really bad experience. I will never book with them again. I had reserved a car for $240 at the London City Airport branch of Europcar but when I got there they told me my reservation had been manually cancelled online. This made no sense. I explained that I had not cancelled my reservation as I had been on a long flight from America with no internet connection. But the staff at the branch told me there was nothing they could do for me. It was a busy bank holiday weekend and all they could provide was a Fiat 500 for 1600 pounds!!! There was no way I was paying that and I ended up getting a car from Avis for 900 pounds because I was left high and dry at London City Airport late on a Friday evening. Still screwed, but not as bad as Europcar and the car was a lot better than a Fiat 500 for 1600 pounds.
I subsequently filed a complaint with Europcar customer service but they were beyond useless and unable to explain why my reservation was cancelled. They implied I must have cancelled it myself which made no sense and was not possible. My guess is that someone at Europcar cancelled my $240 reservation so that they could rent it to another more lucrative customer for a higher price on that busy bank holiday weekend. So they shafted me. I will never rent from this company again. Their customer service was hopelessly inadequate.

If ConsumerAffairs allowed me to give 0 stars, I would. We reserved a car to pick up in Chartres to drive to Blois in France. We did not want to take the train because we would get into Blois 4 hours too late to go on a Chambord Chateau tour that had been purchased in advance. We emailed with two separate Europcar employees and were told we would be charged fees for people to come into the office to rent us the car on a Sunday, which we agreed to. We received a booking confirmation from Europcar with instructions regarding pickup and drop off locations in Chartres and Blois. On the day of the rental we took a taxi cab to the pickup location which was located in an industrial part of town. We waited until 20 minutes after the appointed pickup time to call Europcar.
We finally got ahold of a customer service person and were told we would need to call Europcar France which we did. This employee told me that we had gone to the wrong pickup location even though we had that location right there on the paper copy of the confirmation email. We thought this was crazy but decided to continue trying to get the car. We went to a hotel in Chartres where the employee told us we should pick up the keys to the car. We called a taxi and took it to the hotel location, but the person had no record of our pickup and no keys to any car. At this point we decided we just needed to catch a train to Blois which meant traveling back to Paris and taking a train to Blois from there. We eventually got to Blois 5 1/2 hours late and never got to see Chambord Chateau. I am 60 years old and have never been to France. What a terrible experience! If you value your once in a lifetime European vacation, do not deal with Europcar at all.

I wish I had read the reviews of Europcar before we went to Australia. We rented a car through Europcar in May 2019 and since we were dropping the car in a different location than the pick up location, drop off charges were of importance to us. I located through rentalcars.com a rental that did not charge the drop off charge of 500 AUD (Australian dollars) by picking up the car at the Downtown Melbourne office rather than at the Melbourne Airport. I called to confirm that this was true even though the voucher and back up paperwork clearly stated that the drop-off fee on that rental was 0.00 AUD.
After a taxi ride which costs us 80 AUD to the Downtown location I noticed that the electronic contract that we needed to sign to pick up the car showed a 500 AUD drop off fee. I told them that was wrong and showed the three places on the voucher and other paperwork that stated the 0.00 AUD charge for one-way drop off.
The clerk was very nice and said she could not make the change there but would submit copies of our paperwork and voucher and the main office would clear it up. We had already prepaid for the rental (which had to be cancelled 48 hours prior to pickup in order to get a refund) and our taxi fee to get the the downtown location so I felt we had to believe the clerk that indeed this would be cleared up by the main office. I emailed the company that day as well and customer service at Europcar asked their staff to take care of this for me. I assumed that was done until we came to drop off the car at the Sydney Airport. The drop off charge was still there! Again the desk clerk said that she needed to send copies of our paperwork to the main office and they would take care of it and not to worry.
Two days after returning to the States I get an email from that clerk saying that there was "misinformation" and that the charge was correct. I have been fighting for five months this charge and asking Europcar to honor the prepaid voucher that we submitted. My credit card company was also involved with my dispute. Europcar will not refund the money because we signed the electronic contract. But what could we do on a Sunday morning after showing up to pick up the prepaid rental car (by taxi) that was non-refundable at that point???
After all the extra cost of a taxi ride, postage, and my time in outlining the history of this rental to Europcar and my credit card. No real explanation why they would not honor the terms on the prepaid voucher except saying it was "misinformation". No apology for my time, money, or inconvenience. We travel often and for the lack of honor and integrity that Europcar has shown to have I would NEVER rent a car from them again. My rating is actually a zero because of the customer service in their main office.

However, a family member who rented with another well-known agency through Easyrentcars and had the exact same insurance coverage plan that I purchased had no problems with them accepting the coverage in Ireland. I spoke with the insurance provider I initially purchased and they confirmed their coverage extends to Ireland.
I believe Europcar provided me with misleading info in order to upsell insurance. When reaching out to voice my concern with Europcar to try to get this resolved, it took 3 weeks with several follow up emails from me to get any substantive response, and their response was that they still would not acknowledge the vendor's insurance I purchased. As a result, I paid for double coverage and ultimately incurred an additional expense of almost $700. I would not recommend anyone rent from Europcar.

Beware, if you need to make any adjustments to your reservation, better not do it online. I learned the hard way. Had convertible reserved for 2 months to be picked up at Avignon train station, went online to update pick up and drop off times because it says in the contract if you don't pick up/drop off on time you will be charged 95 euros or full booking price. Once I adjusted the times, the system subsequently canceled my original reservation and created new one, which all seemed ok since all the information was the same (car, dates, pick up/drop off location). That is until I received an email saying that my reservation cannot be confirmed because the car is not available. WTH?? I had that car reserved for 2 months!!
Spend next two days calling all the customer service numbers I could find, spending money on international calls. London customer service seemed to be the most helpful one, but even they couldn't get through to the agency in France to try and fix the situation. No one answers the phone there ever and there is no direct email to try and get in touch with the train station branch. BTW, sent 2 email inquiries online as well through the website, no response to either one. London customer service told me that this is not the first time they see it.
Train station branch most likely didn't have the car in their possession and would've had to source it from somewhere else (makes me wonder if I would've had the car on arrival at all if I didn't make any adjustments to the reservation), so when I updated the reservation and the original one got canceled, they took it as an opportunity to get out of the arrangement. There was zero warning online that that could happen and didn't really cross my mind because it seems so ludicrous. After all that I had to reserve a car elsewhere and since it is now so close to my travel date finding the convertible was impossible. Conclusion: Would not recommend.

Would strongly recommend not using this location and certainly would not use it if you have reserved a Europcar through Expedia. I ended up paying twice as much to rent one of their cars as I did when I rented from Avis. I paid Expedia for the rental but was charged an additional 90 pounds by Europcar. In addition, I was charged 39 pounds for something called Basic Rental Extra Days (This shouldn't have been a surprise to Europcar as I had already paid Expedia for a 22 day rental). I was forced to buy insurance, even though I had ensured my U.S. insurance covered my rental and I had purchased liability insurance through Expedia (my deductible was still 1200 pounds). I was charged an additional 55 pounds for another driver's license, even though my U.S. licence met Europcar's requirements for not needing another one. AND I had to pay 124 pound for something called Premium Station Surcharge.
Do the math. I had 500 pounds of unexpected charges. I have asked Europcar Customer Service for an explanation and have not heard back from them. I do not believe this situation was unique to me. As I waited for my car, 3 other people at the counter being served seemed to be asking about the unexpected additional charges. GO TO AVIS.

We were traveling in France all the way in Australia and rented a car from Europcar Avignon TGV for one day to drive around in Provence. We paid over EU 350 for the one day. They gave us a brand new VW Golf which had only 12km on the odometer. Well turned out it was a faulty car. We barely drove 10 kms and the clutch kept stalling, at about 30kms it started to burn, thick foul-smelling smoke was coming out from the bonnet. It broke down in the middle of the countryside, our family (with our 3 youngs children in tow) were stranded by the side of the road under the 35-degree heat.
After calling Europcar Assistant and waiting an hour for a mechanic to come and check the car, he had a quick look and said the clutch was just sensitive, then drove away and left us to try our luck again. We trusted him, got back into the car, it broke down again after 5 minutes. Had to wait for the mechanic again who came and said my husband had to go with him to tow the car back to Volkswagen! It was THEIR faulty product and they were making US look after it?
Over FIVE hours later, the whole day was ruined, we managed to return to the Avignon TGV office and the manager there spoke to Europcar customer service, who promised a refund for the rental charge and also our taxi fare, but said the refund will take a few days. We took it in good faith and left. Two weeks later, Europcar in Australia emailed us to say they were NOT giving us a refund for the rental charge, only for the taxi cost and a 50 euro reimbursement for inconvenience!
They even charged us a call out fee, when it was THEIR FAULTY CAR that put our family's safety at risk and ruined our entire day! What's worse, there was another random charge to our credit card which they refused to explain. We could not believe it! Outright robbery is what it is. They think because we're out of France now, that they can do whatever they're pleased. We won't let this rest until they agree to refund the rental charge. Too bad they can't refund a whole day of our time ruined and distressed. We will never rent a car from Europcar again.

***AVOID - LIARS & THIEVES - AVOID*** Last month I had the misfortune to hire a car from Europcar at Stansted. Never again. As with most car rental companies, Europcar will seemingly stoop to any level to scam money from customers. For starters, it took almost one hour of queuing before I began the seemingly simple process of collecting my keys. I had already paid for the car online and had elected to take the full insurance. Simple - no additional costs I (foolishly) thought.
With a queue forming behind me I was hurriedly taken through several documents that required my signature and also a swipe of my credit card. Being keen to avoid any additional expenses on my credit card (and having paid for the car and insurance on my debit card). I asked for confirmation that no money would be charged. I was verbally reassured that this was a swipe for a deposit only and that no money would be taken.
Imagine my surprise/horror when a charge of £116 appeared on my credit card statement several days later! When I challenged Europcar, I was informed that I had unwittingly signed for additional insurance to protect my excess on the full insurance I had already paid for! At no point in my conversation with the service desk handler (I was going to use another word there but this review would then be blocked) was I given the offer to accept or reject this option and neither was it explained to me. I had signed for something I did not require, need or want.
Since Europcar have declared that my signed documents are legal and that they are not going to refund me, I plan to get my money's worth by going on every possible review platform and shouting it from the rooftops how immoral, dishonest and deceitful these clowns are. Even if I can stop one hire I will count this as money well spent. Please do yourself a favour - avoid these jokers. Go to another company - BUT - make sure you read everything! Do not rely on having it explained to you (as it would be in every other industry on the planet). And just to reinforce how low Europcar are, I was told that it was basically my word against theirs when I stated that my options were not explained to me! To say I was disgusted is an understatement!

Our experience with the company was good up until it was time to return the vehicle. When we picked it up, the tank was at 6/8. We pointed that out to the rep and asked him to indicate it on the contract and sign. Additionally, we took a picture of it. When we returned the vehicle, we made sure to show both: the picture and the contract to justify the tank at 6/8. When the confirmation of return was handed over to us, we noticed that she indicated the tank at 4/8!!! Equivalent to 23 euros of the fine along with 1.25euro/per missing litre of gas. The rep refused to change it and instead, told us to contest with the customer service. Since we were in rush to catch our flight, we sent a complaint with all the pictures to the email on the website. Within 5 days, we received a confirmation that we will be reimbursed. However! They don't just reimburse the difference but credit the amount they charged and debit the right amount.
We are from Canada and our credit card was in CDN$, which meant that when we paid in Euros, we bought them from our bank at one rate. And when we were reimbursed, the bank bought the euros from us... At a significantly lower rate than when we buy from them. Additionally, we are charged 2.5% exchange fee on both amounts. We ended paying even more for the reimbursement. Although the front desk process went well at downtown location in Cuidad Obregon Mexico, the car had an obscure and minor crack on front windshield that both a young staff member and I missed. It became obvious, after the fact, that this staff member missed the crack on purpose when we returned to have car reinspected after our 4 km round trip. When we returned, we spoke to the manager and three staff members. One reason we suspect foul play is the miles on the contract were not correct; they were off by 100 km on contract indicating car was driven between contracts by their staff. Second reason is another staff member, who was not present during the car inspection, adamantly stated he washed car prior to delivering and in his inspection the windshield was not damaged.
The fact is he did not wash the car prior to delivering as I saw him leave in another rental car to take one of their staff members somewhere and I distinctly remember the younger staff member washing the car. The facts tell me the this agency was covering up the damage until they found an unsuspecting victim to take the fall and pay the damages that they either missed from a previous contract or worst caused themselves. Booked a car from Canada, to be picked up in Gatwick London. When we arrived there was a “Problem” with our booking and we were told we should make another booking. The Europcar staff member entered all the details. I asked him if they were the same as the original booking. He said they were, however he had changed the return time from 3pm to 10am. Due to the stress and pressure we were under we did not see this change. We returned the car after a month in good condition, full of fuel and at 3pm. The return agent at Gatwick said we were late, so I explained my side of the story. He said no problem.
We would not be charged a late return charge (Lies). Well guess what? After returning to Canada we see the charges to our credit card and sure enough, we were charged a full day's rental extra as a late return penalty. I challenged this with Europcar, they replied that they could see the original booking with the return time of 3pm and the new booking with 10am, but it was my fault for not noticing a change that I did not request, therefore I was stuck with the extra day penalty! They couldn’t care less about customer service. Also while I was in England Europcar charged me a no show fee of £85, even though I did show up on time and rented a car. I challenged this with Europcar and after some effort the money was refunded, I lost money on this because of differing exchange rates.
When I told Europcar about losing money because of their mistake, they pretty much said, too bad. I travel to England every year for 4 to 5 weeks and rent a car every time. Needless to say I won’t be renting from Europcar, their short sighted greediness to get an extra day's rental will cost them a five week rental. Not impressed at all with Europcar and most definitely would not recommend them.

Had booked a car at Porto Airport via Ryanair, including insurance and roadside assistance. "Keddy" (which really is Europcar) sold us the motorway vignette, but also put another "roadside assistance" for an extra €9/day on our agreement in Portuguese without telling us anything about it (other items, except the vignette and this were in English). We only noticed when we got the final bill in English after the end of the rental period. On complaining with attachment of our original booking which had included roadside assistance already and explaining the above, we were just told (about three weeks later), we had signed the form, so everything was alright.
We had also been made to upgrade to a bigger car because the booked model allegedly could not accommodate 2 suitcase despite the website saying so and putting one suitcase on the backseat was allegedly illegal. Turned out we had to put the second suitcase on the back seat in the bigger car, too (or convert the back to a loading area).

Rented a minivan this past June from Europcar in Spain. We prepaid for the car back in April and the contract gave specific details and requirements which we complied with. At the time of rental, we decided to add insurance so instead of honoring the previously prepaid contract, they drew a new one with double the charges. On top of that, the initial prepay was NEVER refunded so we ended up paying 3 times the amount. When we tried to resolve the overcharge, Europcar ignores all messages and does NOT respond so now we have to try disputing the charges with the CC company. Lost time and effort that does not warrant the service received from this shady rental car company. Stay AWAY from this car rental company and you will incur heavy losses.

This company is a complete scam. First of all, the quoted price is not the price that you end up paying. They force you to buy extra insurance, even though we had already purchase outside insurance and had credit card insurance. The insurance is almost 50% of the car rental, then they want you to sign a 2000 voucher. Then they tried to give us an old car, we had to fight with them and even then we did not get a car until 3 days later. I was on vacation with my 3 kids and they messed up our entire trip. Worst company ever to rent a car with, they scam you and tried to get money out of you any way they can.

Booked a vehicle from Dublin airport--decided to pay maximum for larger vehicle, automatic, insurance etc.--wanted no hassle whatsoever. At time of booking agent recommended an extra 30 euro charge for terminal pick up--I naively agreed. Arrived at desk--appeared as though they gave away our vehicle as he had to call to see if another available. He fixed us up quickly BUT--we had to hike (2 seniors, 2 adults, 2 children and bags) over to terminal 2 (pick up was supposed to be at terminal 1). Upon return home, I requested a refund--30 euros not a big deal but it was inconvenient and we were charged for something they did not provide. The response was terse advising me that their staff would never charge me for something without my consent. I gave my consent upon their advice--respondent failed to address my basic point and hence no refund.

If you have any other alternative to renting a car in France, use Hertz or another internationally reputable rental agency and avoid using Europcar. Despite having purchased the full insurance package, covering any scratches, etc., Europcar charged us a so-called “damage administration fee”. When we returned the vehicle, the Europcar representative indicated that there was a scratch; (b) at that time, we indicated that there simply was no scratch whatsoever; (c) the Europcar represented indicated that there would be no charge in any event since we had purchased the full insurance package.
And, furthermore, when we initially picked up the car, we were not allowed any opportunity to examine the vehicle or to review the “scratch report” on the vehicle. Furthermore, we returned the car with the gas tank 3/4 full rather than one half full, for which they charged us an absurd 100 euros. This whole process will certainly discourage us from further using Europcar or recommending Europcar to other travelers.

When we arrived after 9pm, there WAS someone at the desk but since we hadn't arrived for our 9am flight, they CANCELLED the reservation and I had to buy a new one. What a surprise, it cost me several hundred dollars more than the original reservation. I would NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use Europcar again. Scam. Rip off. And a customer agent who hadn't bathed in long enough to stink like a dead skunk. plus, they charged me GBP 50 because of a late arrival. Absolute **. In 35 years of international travel, this is the worst experience I have ever had with a rental agency and I hope you never use them.

So I rented a car at Quito Airport through the Europcar App. I was quoted $329 for 10 days. When we arrived I was told that I HAD TO purchase extra insurance (surprise, surprise...) and ended up having to pay $499 in order to get the car. The car was the worst piece of junk I ever had. It was super banged up and one headlight was not working, the radio wasn't working and one of the tires had a leak, as we realized after a few days. When we dropped it off the guy who inspected the car was obsessing over a small dent on the top of the door frame (one of hundreds on the car) and almost try to pin it on us. These guys are like an organized crime syndicate.
I wrote to Europcar and the sent a standard response saying that "the extra insurance is optional" and that you would otherwise have to leave a $10000 deposit for the car (which is worth maybe $2000) in case of damages. They also claimed "With regard to the state of the vehicle, Europcar has vehicles in optimum condition for rent thanks to maintenance by the Mechanics Area. We have not had news of failures with the vehicle CDMR 2018 CHEVROLET AVEO with internal code B58." It was by far the worst rental experience I ever had. I recommend you rent from other companies.

Europcar charged me extra day rental for returning car at 14.23. I was on a flight at 11.25 which I can prove. Numerous emails from different people as they prevaricate to evade paying me back. They also had a car available in the class I booked and had paid for but did not upgrade me as per their T&Cs. Instead I had to pay an extra 300 euros for an upgraded car I did not want but either that or nothing. It all be interesting to hear what they say about altering the time the car was returned as this was never mentioned in the previous few weeks of emails. Could they possibly have altered the information to suit their cause (of making money)?

Rented car online through Expedia. Bought rental car insurance. When I arrived sleep deprived and unable to do basic math, they told me they didn't have my car, and that they wouldn't accept my insurance. They ended up charging me almost 4 times the agreed upon rate - and I signed, because what else could I do? I was alone without phone service in a foreign country. Returned the car, and they settled the bill. Then almost 2 months later, they billed my credit card an extra $60. The credit card flagged it as fraud, and I agreed. Now I am getting nasty letters threatening to turn me over to the solicitors because I refuse to pay their as yet unexplained upcharge. NEVER AGAIN. This is a fraudulent and dishonest company.

After returning rental undamaged the return agent was able to find 2 small tiny scratches which one was just dirt. He took pictures and informed me I would have to pay repairs and other charges due to damages. Total scam!! $800 was the total after all the administrative and loss of rental time to get fixed. Not only did I feel like I got scammed I totally did! Stay away from Europcar.

I got my rental car in Italy. They had me sign all the paperwork (not really explaining any of it) at the counter then I walked half a mile to get a car. Stood there for 30 minutes while they figured out what car they felt like giving me, so it wasn't an assigned car. Returned the car to discover that there was no instructions for after hours returns at their location in Milan (yay) and - worse yet, they charged me for a full tank of gas even though the car I'd been given hand only 3/8ths. Apparently the paperwork at the counter claimed the unknown car's tank was full, so I had to pay it. 50 Euros to learn that if you're using them you need to DOCUMENT EVERYTHING, including pictures of the gas when you pick it up.

Booked our rental through Rentalcars.com, which said it was insured. When I went to pick up the car it was an additional charge for insurance or we were not allowed to leave with the car. Original rental price was $320. The additional insurance required was $502. When I contacted Europcar about this they stopped responding to me. Two months after my rental they charged me another $50 and the credit card purchase shows that it was a manual entry. Do not rent from them, they are terrible. I have rented cars in Europe before and never have I had such an issue as with this company. I had to report my card as being stolen so they cannot keep charging me.

I rented a car for 1 day to drive from Paris to Geneva. Upon return in Geneva they pointed to a small 1.5 inch scratch behind the rear right wheel and asked if we were responsible. We declined responsibility and they did not press the issue. 2 days later we were charged USD 839 to repair the scratch. I returned to Europcar for justification of cost and they were not able to produce repair quote or proof of repair on the vehicle. They could not produce history of incidents or repair to that particular vehicle either. I think the scratch is there and being used to bill other customers. It is clear that they have a business practice to take advantage of tourists in a hurry to catch a plane. They will charge for anything and everything they can to boost profits. I will never rent with them again.
