They said that I didn't return the receipt for the gas that I purchased and so they charge me for 1 gallon of gas which was $10 and I clearly gave the guy at the counter the receipt and made sure the car was full and they still charge me 10 dollars for one gallon of gas. Outrageous. I will never rent from Dollar again!

Picked a car in Las Vegas. Fuel tank should have been full but was only half which I only noticed after leaving the rental office. As we were driving to San Francisco I decided to continue and notify the rental agent upon arriving At our destination which I duly did. This office was most helpful and apologetic and tried to make a refund for the fuel as I returned the car full but was unable do so and advised me to ring their customer service department who would be able to assist. I rang the Las Vegas office who again apologized and said they would make a note of the fuel issue and that the customer service office would arrange for a refund. After waiting on the phone for 15 minutes or more I was greeted by a smug arrogant female who basically didn't want to know more or less called me a liar and refused to do anything.

Arrived at Frankfurt Airport to pick up my "awesome deal" for a compact car. I have rented cars all over the world and many, many times. First time user of Dollar in Frankfurt, however. Clerk pointed out the 2nd page, middle of the paragraph fine print, that states, written proof must be provided that the credit card, indeed, covers full damage in Germany. Needless to say, I didn't have my platinum credit card information on me showing that my credit card has full coverage. Don't all platinum credit cards have this? So I refused to pay the additional 20+/day Euros to take the car. That's how they get around providing you with the "awesome deal". Fortunately I was not in dire need to take the car. My advise: use Sixt rental instead. First and last time I use Dollar.

We ordered a standard SUV (Type Grand Cherokee) at the airport Fort Lauderdale. We got a Nissan car, with nothing in it. Not even a mechanical help to adjust the side mirrors!!! The employees have been very unfriendly after we waited for almost one hour. The car was booked with a full tank. It was not even 3/4 full, and we got nothing back. The driver seat was not adjustable in height, so my wife could not drive because she was not tall enough to see over the dashboard. So we paid the extra driver for nothing. We asked for another car or an upgrade. They said, there is no other car and an upgrade would cost 65$/day!!! Tell you, it was a bad experience. I can not recommend this company, even they have cheap offers.

I booked a rental car from Dollar Rent A Car online for a trip to visit my brother who was have a very serious operation in July 2015. When I arrived at the Las Vegas Airport, I have to wait in line for approx. two hours. The agents were rude and very slow. One agent was chewing gum and blowing bubbles while waiting on customers.
The problems came when it was my turn to pick up my already paid for vehicle. I needed to add a driver, due to the fact that I would be spending most of my time at the VA hospital with my brother, I was told that it would cost an additional $12.08 per day to add another driver. I asked to change that main driver to my licensed, and insured friend, my answer was NO. In addition I was told that the tank would have to be full before turning in the vehicle, or that I could pre-pay for a tank of gas. The average cost of a tank of gas for Las Vegas was $3.50 per gallon. Because it was now 12:04 in the morning, which would have been 3:04 A.M. Eastern time (the time zone that I was flying in from) I believed the agent, but to my great surprise I found that you could purchase gas for $3.09 in many places in Las Vegas.
In addition I was given a "wild card" car. This vehicle turned out to be a Toyota Yaris, which I was charged $34.00 per day rental. This vehicle according to the manufacture holds 11.1 gallons of gas. I was charged for 17.6 gallons of gas at a cost of $3.38 per gallon, I never saw any gas selling for $3.38 per gallon for the entire time that I was in Las Vegas. How can a company charge for something that is not purchased? This company has the worst customer service, with rude employees and in my opinion steals from their customers.

This was my first time to rent a car from Dollar. I booked two months in advance with booking.com to get a car from Washington and drop it off in New York. Booking website showed me that the total charges without the insurance would be 166.25. I also bought the insurance from booking.com. The agent who talked to me in Dollar office was very rude. I don't want to refer to his nationality but he definitely didn't speak good English, and what bothered me the most was that he was super impatient and didn't want to explain anything to me.
He insisted on selling me insurance and when I said "I already bought it", he said: "Ok, so after you have your accident (as if I'm definitely going to have one) don't call us. Call whoever you got your insurance from". Then in the final charges, another 114 was added and it was not clear why. I asked him what it was for and he turned his monitor towards me and started to point at numbers on the screen. I said "I can read the number, I just need to know what this is for because this was not part of my initial booking charges", and he almost yelled "I don't know. Go ask whoever you booked with".
Of course I will call booking.com and ask them about this but my question is why do they even work with third parties when their attitude is so bad about booking with them? Then tonight I searched online and found out that they have hundreds of complaints about scams either for selling insurance or other options when customers didn't ask for them. So, I don't really know if that extra 114 is part of a scam or what, but I made another reservation with Dollar for next month which I'm going to cancel after this experience. If you are renting from Dollar, be aware of their tricks and their attitude towards third parties.

I rented an SUV from rentalcars.com over the Internet 7/15/15 for our family trip to Kona, HI. We were to pick a Ford Escape or similar up from Dollar Rent a Car 7/17/15 $201 for the week. Total bait & switch operation. Dollar wouldn't accept any of the pre-authorized deal with rentalcars.com. Dollar wanted to rent us a Jeep 4x4 for $700 a week. We ended up with a Dodge Journey for about $600 a week. Yes, that's 3x what we had agreed to with rentalcars.com. Please do yourself a favor and don't use either of these two companies. We won't be back to Kona, HI as well...

We waited 45 minutes in line at the Las Vegas airport Dollar rental desk and had at least another 45 minutes to go. I called to cancel the pre-paid reservation and was told I missed the deadline but could request a refund through a partner "CarTrawler" which is apparently located in Ireland. By the time we gave up and rented from Enterprise (which took 15 min.) the line at Dollar/Thrifty was twice as long. We would have spent less time flying from San Francisco to Las Vegas than standing in line at the Dollar check in counter! (Those arriving later had a much worse experience.) The lack of customer service was stunning, and only got worse.
I submitted a refund request with receipts to the CarTrawler website and got no response. I sent two follow-up messages via the site and got no response. I called a toll free number and was told that they had submitted the claim to Dollar and I would be contacted in 48 hours. No contact. I called again and was told the assigned agent hadn't gotten a response from Dollar but would call me. No call. Does this mean that Dollar will not respond to an inquiry from the company it has contracted to handle refund requests?
The number of reviewers who had a similar experience suggests that this is the business model: Entice customers with low rates and discounts for pre-paying. Reduce labor costs to the absolute minimum by understaffing. When customers try to cancel, keep their deposit. Allow customers to appeal but subcontract this to an off-shore company then systematically ignore the request. Does anyone else think this is fraudulent? It would be so interesting to know the total annual revenue from deposits sacrificed by frustrated customers.

Thought I had found a great deal for renting a compact car for $262.86 for 4 days but upon arrival at the desk all these hidden costs I was subjected to that I was not aware of when I was booking online appeared which would have changed my mind about renting from dollar! I had no choice at this point but pay the additional costs as I had already made the partial payment online and if I backed out now I would be subjected to more fees. Anyhow the additional charges exceed the original charges and if I known before hand I would not have rented the car at all!!! So in total I end up paying: $574.17 for 4 days! Now that's just ridiculous and I would have definitely not have rented at all if I knew about those "Optional charges!"

So my grandmother in Cleveland gets ill and I take a last minute flight to go visit her. I go on the Dollar Rent A Car website and reserve a vehicle. I fly 1200 miles and put half of it on my credit card...the shuttle was sooooo late as well. After the long line I finally get to the counter and was told they did a credit check and denied me a vehicle. AFTER TAKING WHAT LITTLE MONEY I HAD AND PROMISING ME A VEHICLE. At this time it was 11:30pm and I had nobody to pick me up. The rude guy at the counter said all I can do is take an Uber (60 miles to my grandmother’s house). Not only did I have to pay $80 for that late night ride, they said it would be a few days until my deposit was refunded.
It's been 4 days and nothing has been returned to my account. I call Dollar Rent A Car and after being on hold for 17 minutes and being transferred twice, they told me to call the 3rd party company who supposedly does the online bookings... I call that number. Speak to a gentleman who informed me that on their end it didn't show I never received the car. Dollar never told them to give me a refund I guess. Now I have to file a complaint with the customer care department of this 3rd party company and wait up to 20 business days while they do an investigation. Anyone know a real number to complain? This is ridiculous.

First of all when you call the 1800 number and they ask you what language English or Spanish, I tried both you cannot ever understand what they are saying. They tell you they will call you back and they don't. When you pick up your vehicle they add a bunch of hidden charges. I had an international student that did not speak English and they charged him for a full price of an SUV and he was given a small Chevy Cruze. What a rip off, sounds like a bunch of thieves. You can't even get through the location of where you rented the car. Every number takes you to a operator in the Philippines. This company sucks. I'm going to make sure I put the off limits to my students that attend courses in the United States.

There were also extra charges made to my credit card with no explanation from them on what they were for. It has also been impossible to get in touch with anyone there. I rented a minivan through Dollar as part of a family holiday to Florida. On arrival I was told I should have navigation. When I asked why it wasn't fitted as standard I was simply told it was an option. I agreed to rent the Garmin device for $195 for the 14 day period. The device was handed to me and demonstrated. Imagine how I felt when the car I chose had not only one but two navigation devices, one built in and one retrofitted Hertz device. When I complained I was told I had agreed to rent the device and my complaint was closed without further communication. Disgraceful policy and disgraceful customer service.

On July 19 at 3:08 we pulled up to dollar rental car at Newark airport. Valentino went to the desk while I cleaned out the vehicle. The lady behind the desk told him to drive around to return the vehicle in the back lot. He jumped in the driver seat and I got in the car and we drove around to the back lot. We went to the front desk after the car was inspected. We handed her her contract. We asked if she could apply A promo code that we were given and told to give to her upon checkout. She explained to us that it had to have been printed so she could attach it to our contract.
We did not at the time have access to a computer to print. So we asked her if she can get her manager to receive it in an email format to print out. She said she tried to get a hold of him to no avail. She told us that he was not available that he was outside at the time. After going through our charges she explained that it would be charged to the credit card on file, at which time I explained that we needed to change the payment that it not go on the original card on file. We gave her the new credit card which she accepted and try to run through however the system, she told us was not working at the time.
So we asked her again to get the manager because we really needed the payment to go on a specific credit card and not the one on file. She again trying to get a hold of the manager and again told us that he was not available. We turned towards the office and noticed the gentleman sitting down at his desk. When we asked if that was the manager she walked over to him inside the office and spoke to him for about five minutes. She came out of the office back towards the desk without a word. She then went back to the office where her manager was and had another five-minute conversation with him.
When she came back out she apologized and said that it was not possible to change payment at this time. That everything would go on the original card. We then demanded to speak to the manager face-to-face. When he came out he immediately was defensive. There was no professional tone whatsoever. He did not ask if there was anything that he could do for us, or what the problem was. He was immediately aggressive in his tone and mannerism.
When we explained to him the two main reasons we needed to speak with him he continue to get loud and argumentative with us. When I came back with the same tone he told me that I was being unprofessional and that there was nothing he could do for me. He told me that we were in breach of contract because he saw my husband drive the car where he was not listed as a secondary driver. When we explained to him that it was the front desk who asked him to take the car around. He the manager continue to get hostile, shut the system down, and told us that he was done that there was nothing he could do for me and walked away as he muttered, "It's not my fault that you came here at four in the morning, I didn't tell you to come here and drop the car off at four in the morning."
Again there were only two things that we needed to happen. I wanted to change the form of payment which I am entitled to do, as well as email the 20% coupon off to him so he can print it out for us. However after he stormed out he was no longer willing to speak with us or hear anything that we had to say to him. I asked the lady at the front desk if she can pull up the system again so we can ensure that my credit card on file was not to be charged and to try and run the correct card, And at the same time I asked the name of her manager. She would not give it to me. She picked up the phone and said that she needed to ask him if it was OK if she gave us his name. When she didn't get him on the phone she walked over to his office and shut the door she came back with information written on our contract.
She told us that he had written his name down and his supervisors name and phone number on the contract for us. He wrote down the total that was going to be charged to the card ($956) that was on file (which was not the one we wanted to use) and that he could only take cash for the remaining balance due ($168.69). When we explained to her that we wanted to change the form of payment completely she refused the payment because the card we were giving her did not have my name on it. She said that they would only accept cash and that was it.
This by far is the worst customer service experience I have ever encountered. We were the only customers in the building at this time. It did not seem like the manager Bill wanted to accept any type of responsibility of taking care of us in any way shape or form. He would not come out and speak to us initially it took several conversations from the girl at the front desk to him instead of him coming out to the front desk to speak with us. There was nothing else going on at the time. And after the third or fourth time of us asking to speak with him he finally came out. Extremely unprofessional seemingly annoyed that he had to actually speak to us.
In my opinion of being in customer service and management for over 15 years, he does not deserve a management position. He makes dollar rental car look very bad. I will never again use dollar rental car as long as I live. And I will make sure that every outlet of social media that I have and every avenue that I can use I will tell my story and my experience with dollar rental car at the Newark airport. For something so small to become such a big deal and such a hassle is extremely frustrating for me and sad for you! My husband is currently taking me home and I still can't stop shaking and tears of frustration are running down my face for the way I was treated and the situation was handled. I am not asking for anything above and beyond what I am entitled to.

I recently rented a car in Miami 07/11/2015 to 07/17/2015. After a 45 minute wait in line at the counter, I proceeded to the pick-up area. There I saw about 100-150 people waiting around the pick-up counter (which was marked Thrifty). I gave the girl my ticket, she took it and put it under a pile of about 50-60 (? ), not exactly sure how many. She did not give me any info at that time. I asked her "How long will it be to get my car?" She said "about 15 minutes". That is when a person yelled "it's going to be over an hour, because that is how long I have been waiting". I said "No way" to the girl, she didn't even look at me. So I looked her in the face and said "Are you the manager?" She said "No." I said "I want to speak to the manager", She said "I will get him for you."
After asking about 4 times to see the manager (total time 1 hr and 15 minutes), I finally picked up my car, but never speaking to the manager. By the way I paid for a full size car and received a really small car. I just keeped my mouth shut because I was afraid they would take it back and I would have to wait another hour or more. I was nice, but firm, with no manager on duty and 2 counter girls to take all the abuse that all the customers were giving them seems so unreasonable. By the way I made these reservations in Jan 2015. I also explained that to the girl, but made no effect on her. I would NEVER use Dollar again and I will tell ALL my friends about my experience. You may contact me about this write up anytime. Thank You.

Waited :30 for a car with a reservation and I started first in line with one person being helped. Did not have the car in the class that I rented when I went to pickup... but took what they had as I was not going to wait another :30. This was a drop off at another location situation. I returned the vehicle Sunday (today is Sat) and both Friday and today I'm getting messages that vehicle was not returned and if I don't contact immediately they'll report as stolen.
Reached the local dollar person Friday. They sent paperwork in and manager will call Sat to follow up with you... no call. More threatening calls Sat on reporting as a crime. Again talk to local guys... "we sent paperwork in and have done all that we are responsible for... call Charlotte pickup point". Charlotte messages say customer service is closed until Monday. Call the security department who has left the threatening message and wait the :15 because they have "higher than normal volume". Told that the security department is closed and I'll have to call back Monday.

Just avoid this company and go to one that operated honestly! They are very well organized to rip you off. It should be possible to ban somehow companies that are doing business this way. I made a reservation via Auto Europe and paid long in advance around 400 euro for 13 days. When arrived to San Francisco airport, the lady at the counter of Dollar asked me for my credit card and indicated me to read the contract and then sign it. I had to read it on a small black and white screen of maximum size 15x10 cm. Because of the very small screen, I had to scroll I would guess at least 25 very small pages and then signed it on that touch screen. I just don't remember that any price was displayed on the screen. She also told me to bring the car back with the empty tank because they offer for free a full tank of gas. This seemed to me a strange but not strange enough to ring some alarm bells in my head.
It turns out now that they added to my contract a lot of insurances and other services I didn't ask for and my credit card was charged with additional 419 euro. This is more than I paid already in advanced at Auto Europe. Consider yourself warned, and take some time to read the reviews of other clients about this evil company. You will notice that I am not a singular case.

I want to report the very poor standard of customer care I received with Dollar at Denver Airport (at 23520 E 78th St, Denver Intl Airport) - Receipt No ** for car hire (July 02-09, 2015). Here are my key complaints:
2) Dollar sales/desk person was aggressive and rude in Denver Airport pick up area. He insisted I needed a 6 cylinder car for the Rocky Mountain National Park which is not true (60% of cars going there were small to mid-size cars).
3) He also lied to me about needing to pay in advance for the E470 Toll Road in Denver as he stated I needed an EZ Pass, which is not true as there are booths where you can pay cash as you travel.
4) He also insisted that I needed to have Super-Liability insurance and insisted that my credit card insurance would not cover it. He thereby charged me additional $17 per day x 7 days for this insurance. This was not true as I subsequently verified with my credit card company but he wanted to make earn extra commission. This is unacceptable.
I would never hire at Dollar again or use the Holiday.com to hire a car. It's not trustworthy, staff lie about the options and costs and they overcharged me at every stage of the proceedings. I intend to report this to the State Tourism and Marketing in Colorado as well as to the Consumer Association so it does not keep happening to me and other customers. I paid over $500 in total for the week as they kept adding costs and claiming more fees and insurance costs.

I ended up getting a Ford Focus 2013, with 50,000 miles on it. I only had the car for two days. I took the car back, and I was again in a hurry to go back to the airport to catch my flight. As soon as I pulled up the parking lot, the employee noticed the car had a scratch about a foot long on the bumper and it was cracked. She looked at it for a long time, did not even say anything to me and then finally said she had to get an accident report form. I was completely in shock because I did not cause this damage and felt like I was being blamed for it.
She had a manager come out and tell me I had to fill out the form even though it was not my fault. She said their auto body might have record of the damage and if they did I would be off the hook but they could not check that for me and I had to call their corporate number. I was completely in shock. I did not cause this damage. I am now waiting to hear back if they are going to pursue this. It was a minor crack in the front bumper and not anything I did. I am extremely upset with their service, because had they caught this with the FIRST person who brought the car after the damage, and had actually done their job, then I would NOT have been blamed for it. Horrible customer service. I am never renting from them again. I completely feel as though I have been scammed.

We got a quote by phone and arrived to pick up the vehicle. We received the dirtiest, oldest, and most beat up Jeep we have ever received in all of our trips to Hawaii. When the cd player did not work I returned it hoping we would get a nicer one: nope. If it were even possible we were given an more dilapidated, smelly, and dirty rat trap of a vehicle. As we thought we had a pretty good deal and planned on doing a bit of 4 wheeling I left without complaint. Ultimately we had to use beach towels from the resort as makeshift seat covers because the car was so dirty.
The real shock came when we returned the car and were charged over $1,500 for the week even though the original quote was around $500. I disputed, but in the end I had signed the paper they gave me so we got screwed. BEWARE! Dollar is a predatory company that will add surreptitious charges and use your signature against you. READ everything before you sign and if they ask you to buy insurance ask for an adjusted quote before agreeing. I will NEVER use them again.

My family had to rent a car to get from Charlotte, NC to Asheville, NC after our flight was canceled. It cost us over $200.00 to drive it one day, one way. This was May 23rd. We rented it to drop off at the Asheville airport. I returned the car the next evening, tank full, but there wasn't a Dollar representative at the airport in Asheville. We had to have the Hertz rep take the key and receive the car. They said that the Dollar rep picks the cars up in the morning and this was the procedure to to follow.
Three days later I get a robo call from Dollar saying the car has not been turned in. I call the 1-800 # to Dollar and am on hold for 35 minutes. I tell them the whole story and they say that the manager of the Dollar franchise in Asheville will go over to get the car. Two days later another robocall, 25 minutes on hold. Still no car turned in because the manager didn't get the car. They say that it will be fine and I'll get the bill with my total. Four days later I get an e-mail with $1,500.00+ bill stating the car was turned in on the 5th of July in Nashville TN. I will NEVER rent a car from these fools again. This has put a huge amount of stress on me and my family and I now have to deal with them and my Visa bill.

I booked a premium SUV online through Expedia from Dollar at the Denver Airport at an advertised price of $111/day for three days. I requested a Suburban and the boy behind the counter said that he had an Armada. I asked if they had anything else and he said they also had a Yukon (not a Denali). I asked if the price was the same for all of them and I was told they were all premium SUVs and the price was the same. Before he gave me the receipt I asked what the total price was and he said it was $657, which I was OK with because I also got the fuel option. During the return of the vehicle the rude person checking the car in told me the total cost was $990 and pointed out that I was being charged for a luxury SUV. I told her the Yukon was GMC's version of the Suburban, and she told me it was in fact a luxury SUV. We were running late for the airport and I didn't have time to find a manager.
If you go to the Dollar website they show the Suburban as a premium SUV and they indicate a luxury SUV is a BMW/Mercedes. I called Dollar and was connected with a representative that was extremely rude and when I asked to speak to a supervisor she told me that ain't going to happen and she hung up on me. I've sent in two requests through their online complaint system and I have never heard back. I was unable to find a telephone number for the Denver Airport Dollar location so I called the Denver Airport and they gave me the telephone number for Dollar (303-317-0598). Dollar will NOT answer the telephone, even after letting the extensions at the counter and the on duty manager ring for over 30 minutes each. To add insult two weeks later I received a toll bill for $72 which had to be paid within 10 days or else they would turn it over for collection. I only went through four tolls my entire trip.
After reading the fine print I discovered they charged me for; a) maximum toll amount, b) $15 for each toll, and c) some type of because we can charge. I travel on a regular basis and rent vehicles when I travel. I've never had this bad of an experience with a rental car company. I understand that Dollar is also associated with Thrifty and Hertz so I'll never rent from these businesses again. I'm informing my employees they will not be allowed to rent from these locations too. If Dollar Rent A Car thinks this is a sustainable business model I can assure them it is not. Maybe a young enterprising attorney will see an opportunity for a class action law suit against Dollar for overcharging customers.

So we took the car back to Fort Myers after an hour and a half ride and waiting one hour for AAA. The person at the desk was **. He was an **. He tried to put me in a minivan that had a broken front seat that was not sitting straight. I went back and told ** and he wasn't even apologetic. They do not care once they make a sale. They couldn't care that I spent 5 hours straightening out their puke smelly car and made me pay $74 for their tire that went flat. When I told him that I did not want ROADSAFE, he said that it was an airport tax, which I thought was completely incorrect. I asked again, "It says 'optional.' I do not believe that this is an airport tax. Also the name ROADSAFE does not sound like an airport tax." He repeatedly told me that this was an airport tax. Out of frustration of waiting 30+ minutes and the salesperson being insistent that I was wrong I gave up, signed, and left as I was losing time into my vacation.
As soon as I look this up on the internet, I found out that I am correct and that ROADSAFE is an option and that it is definitely not an airport tax. I don't mind a salesperson trying to push something on me. I understand that it is their job. However I have a big problem with someone lying to me about what something is even after I pointed out that they seemed to be incorrect. The fact that management would only take off half for this is kind of absurd. Dollar will not get my recommendation to any others.

When she got home, she found out that they charged her another 209 dollar for all different insurances etc. It was very difficult to get hold of any help desk or customer service, but finally through Rental cars she got hold of them and they told her that she got 157.16 dollar back...so why not the full amount? They told us that Dollar took that other part as for their risk they took. This is pure rip! They took money from her account and telling her afterwards that it was a risk. If this was true, why did Dollar UK sell us this package?
We were then amazed to find that when we went to pick up our car, we had to wait another 30 minutes to drive it away as there were hardly any cars available for collection and the young kid in charge had no idea what was happening. As the parking garage has no air conditioning, this was the last thing we needed after a 10-hour flight from London. To briefly lay out my story... Dollar Rent a Car accepted a pre-payment from me on their website via a third party affiliate in Dublin Ireland of more than 70% of the estimated total rental cost and then deceitfully added optional charges to my bill when I picked up the car in Orlando that added up close to the amount of my original estimate so I wouldn't notice the difference. In the end, I paid $573 for a $318 rental! I recently took my family to Disney World for a 10 day vacation and rented a car through Dollar Rent a Car for the entire trip. When I reserved the car online, they showed me two different prices, "pay now" and "pay later". The "pay now" option was approx. $100 cheaper so I chose to pre-pay. My estimate for total charges was $318, of which I paid $234 up-front, leaving $83 due at the counter when I picked up the car in Florida.
When I signed for the car at the airport on 5/31/15 (after standing in line for over an hour), I verbally refused any insurance or additional charges. As a matter of fact, I was very clear with the agent at the desk about the fact that I didn't want any of the extra insurance or additional options. My printed receipt from the desk showed my total rental was going to be a total of $339. I didn't worry too much about the extra $20, figuring they were taxes that weren't included in the original reservation. When I returned from vacation, I noticed Dollar had charged the additional $339 to my card on top of the $234 I had already paid! I also noticed the original $234 charge was made by a company in Dublin Ireland, not Dollar Rent a Car. I called the customer support number at Dollar to let them know I had been over-charged and that my pre-payment amount was not showing up on my itemized bill.
They told me that the pre-payment had been applied and that there were additional charges because I had accepted an optional Loss & Damage Waiver fee of $28.99 per day. Upon further review of the itemized receipt given to me when I returned the car to the Orlando airport, I noticed that the original per-day charge for the agreement was not listed on the receipt, nor was the $234 that I had already paid. Instead, there was a per-day fee listed for the additional optional LDW1 fee of $260.91. NOWHERE do I have a receipt from Dollar that shows the ACTUAL total rental agreement cost of $573.53, which is actually what I paid. I've filed complaints through the Better Business Bureau and the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center on the grounds of credit card fraud.

My story started nine years ago when I rented a car from the Dollar Familly for business usage, something done numerous times prior this rental. As always signed for and paid for the loss damage waiver to cover damage to the car if something happened, and it did. The accident occurred during a time when one of our company drivers was driving. At the time of rental he was not specifically added to the contract yet the terms and conditions stated that company drivers were allowed to drive. Shortly after the accident the loss prevention department for Dollar contacted me about the incident. After several discussions I was led to believe that the case was settled.
Now 9 years later a family member asked me to assist him with a 1400 mile drive. He rented a Dollar rent a car. While at the counter I presented my license and received the embarrassing blow "YOU ARE ON THE DNR, can't allow you to drive." The rental agent provided me a phone number to call and a reference number and stated it was for a damage in 2007.
I contacted the number and that is when the fun began. Excessive hold times took seven transfers which went back and forth between Dollar and Thrifty even had one where I could not make anything out of what the man said except to hold. Finally I got to someone who gave me a 405 area code number to call "great, now call on my dime or should say five bucks after hold time." Well from here I was given another number to call--of course another 405 area code. A wonderful lady answered and told me she would help. First sincere person so far.

This is to inform you of my dissatisfaction with the vehicle and the service that I received from Dollar Rent-a-Car during my most recent auto rental experience. While visiting the island of Oahu, I rented a vehicle on 05/19/2015 through 05/25/2015 from Dollar Rent-a-Car 3179 N. Nimitz Hwy, Honolulu, HI 96819. The vehicle that I received was a 2014 Nissan Maxima (vehicle# **).
My first issue started with not being able to start the vehicle when I was initially leaving your lot. After several attempts, I had to track down a lot attendant to assist me which took several minutes. He helped me get the vehicle started and explained the functional basics of the vehicle. On May 22, 2015, while driving through Waipahu, I was pulled over by a Honolulu Police Officer. He stated that the vehicle's registration had expired in March 2015. To my amazement, I could not respond to the officer except to say that the vehicle was a rental. After the officer had done some checking, he returned to me stating that he was not going to cite me for the vehicle's registration being expired. He went on to say that I should notify the car rental company to let them know what happened. He then allowed me to leave.
On May 25, 2015, I returned the vehicle to Dollar Rent-a-Car because my visit to Oahu was ending. While the car was being processed by a Dollar Rent-a-Car representative, my travel companion mentioned to the representative that the vehicle registration had expired in March 2015. Your representative immediately responded with, "Yes ma'am, I know!" His response was short and came across as being upset. He gave no reason or apology for renting an illegal vehicle to a paying customer. I then went in to notify your rental agent in the office of being pulled over by a police officer and not having a current registration on the vehicle. She wrote a note and said, "thank you."
The service that I received from your staff was far inferior than that of other car rental companies for the following reasons: There should have been someone to escort me to the vehicle, discuss the operational features of the vehicle, and to make sure that I was comfortable with the basic functionality of the vehicle before I left the lot. That vehicle should never have been allowed to leave your lot without a current registration. The vehicle was not legal to be driven on public roads and highways. And I could have been cited for your over-site and negligence.
Not one of your staff members apologized for renting out an illegal vehicle or for the inconvenience that it caused me when I was stopped by a police officer. Also, your representative that checked in the vehicle, upon me returning it, was rude by all business standards. I am not sure if Dollar Rent-a-Car changed its service expectations from its staff or to its customers however, I can say that I was not pleased with my experience. I've rented from Dollar many times in the past and have always been pleased with the service and vehicle. This is why I returned. I don't know what happened since. It was very disappointing to me.
For the above reasons, I believe that Dollar Rent-a-Car should reimburse me for the full rental charges debited to me, in the amount of $601.47, because the vehicle was illegal to drive, the service that I received from your staff was inadequate, and the inconvenience of being stopped by a police officer while vacationing on Oahu. I look forward to your prompt reply.

Since I closed the contract out, Swenson won't honor same rate I have been getting and don't have any remorse about me being a $1000 month customer for 5 months - and said they don't have any cars for me after I was just at the airport, and they told me to go back to Swenson to reduce fees. This company does not care about you being a frequent customer and that you have built such a relationship with even employees. There is no point in spending so much money with a company and for them to be rude to you and treat you like crap. You can spend less money at a bar and get treated better. He was extremely rude, sarcastic and continuously attempted to talk to my husband and I as if we were dumb kids. When I had asked him questions, basic inquiries, just trying to understand the process, he would snap and get defensive. He would say things along the lines of, "you're coming to us asking us to borrow our car, you can go elsewhere." I just wanted to know why they needed my employers information and if they were going to contact them. The answer would have simply determined which phone number I would have provided because my employer is a huge organization.
It's unfortunate that this individual was our first encounter in Vegas and he definitely ruined my first day here. I've worked in customer, client services and now patient services, so I understand customer service. I know that as a customer, I should not leave feeling upset, angry and hurt. That is how I left with my encounter with **. He singlehandedly lost a valued customer for Dollar. I will never go back there ever again. For the record, the wait in line wasn't an issue, the car cost, no problem. ** customer service, not up to par at all. Lastly, as an FYI, race is not an issue, as I am African-American.

When I returned the car, they found a small dent in driver's side door. It must have occurred in a parking lot and never even saw it. I provided my car insurance and asked them to work it out with them. He told me it would be $1250 to repair the damage (no formal estimate was made, this was off the top of his head for the repair for a small dent), but he would take $800 now. I asked again that he work with my car insurance to settle this matter. A few months later, he decided to send it to a collection agency. He has never contacted my car insurance company. Now, I have to get a lawyer involved. Other comments have described similar rude behavior and he insistent, "Go call corporate and get out" response to everything.

I booked a car at Dollar Rent A Car online for one day from Orlando to Miami beach at $49, and specified the pick up and drop off point. The confirmation email changed to drop off point to Miami Airport. I called to let them know that the drop off point on the confirmation was incorrect, and that I wanted to return the car to the office on South Beach. The phone clerk said that would require a new contract, and that the current price was $345 dollars. She said I could accept the new price or cancel the reservation. I cancelled.
I called back to ask if a car could be returned to any Dollar Rent a Car location (According to the travel agency page, "most" allow this). The clerk said that I could return the car to a different location, but the company needed advance notice. I told him that I had given advance notice and the price was jacked up by $300, and he hung up. The company's business practices seem unfair, and raising the fee almost ten times just to return a car at a convenient office seems odd. And they didn't want to answer the question as to whether you can drop off at any office, or not.

We even called them prior because our flight was delayed 30 minutes, and we were told they would hold our rental for 2 hours and not to worry! We have rented from this company in the past with no problems but after seeing all of the bad reviews they must be going down hill fast! Horrible experience!

In the last I was sent a bill for $1300 for "hail damage" to the roof of a car. First of all who inspects the roof of a car in a dark parking garage and when you are only 5 feet tall. Second - there was NO hail storm while I had the car. But now it is with another stupid collection company of PurCo. Well - I refuse to pay so they can take me to court. But I seriously advise to not rent from Dollar.

I was charged a $250 cleaning fee. I had a trip to New York City the past June 5 of 2015. I first instance, me and my family went to rent a car at the JFK Facility and the representative who attended us was not in the mood, since she treated me and my family real bad. At the end she decided to give us a good rate and put in the system to return the car at 3:00 P.M. The original total charges were for $625 + $90 = $715. After that we went to pick a car and they gave us a White Nissan Armada. On our way to my mother’s house in Brooklyn, the car went off a couple of times. We decided to return the car the same day and the supervisor (rude attitude) attended us and gave us a Silver Chevrolet Traverse. He took the original ticket and gave us a new one without any explanation whatsoever. On my last day, I return the car late since I missed my Flight at 7:47 P.M. to San Juan, due to traffic on the Highway.
Me and my mother, sister and brother in law, were humiliated by the staff and supervisor or manager. He charged me a couple of hundreds without any explanations... I was aware of the gas since it was only approx. half of tank and they charge me $137.36 plus another $90.07 = $227.42 with no explanation whatsoever. I tried to spoke to him again and he left the "Return Car Booth" to say hi to a friend ignoring me and my family - I was about to cry. I went to the clerk around 7:50 and ask for the manager on charge and explain to her the situation and she never help us, at that same moment, the supervisor was there next to me and the clerk with no manners, interrupted the chatter and told me then he was the manager. I ask him that why he ignore me when I needed an explanation, and his response was; "Your answers are in the little letters of the receipt", with a very negative attitude in front of my family.
I ask him again why the additional charges, and he told me that the gas tank was not full and the return time was at 12:00 P.M. and asked me, "What time is it?” like three times with very bad manners for a customer on vacation. I told him that I was not happy with his answer and very bad and arrogant attitude. I asked his full name and the clerk woman and he reply, **, and ask him for his last name and answer me with a very bad attitude again that he's not allow to give his last name for security reason. I told him that it was my first time in 22 years in NYC. He replied, "I doubt it".
I ended shaking his hand and telling him my full name **, General Manager at Casino Real Four Points By Sheraton at Caguas Puerto Rico. Am writing this because of the really bad service from the beginning till end of my vacation at Dollar Car Rental a very prestige company in which I spend money to rent a Car to visit my family for the first time in 22 years. I ordered via rentalcars.com which I always do. We rent for 10 weeks/year or so around the world. My choice for car was Ford Escort which is OK for 2-3 people with 2-3 bags. They tried to convince me to rent bigger car, buy a bunch of insurances etc. When I refuse they give me a Yaris, so small that I can't get even 1 bag in. No complains helped so we had to put bags on rear sits. I complained to rentalcars.com and they told me I got wrong car, not the one I paid for. They advised to go back and change.
We are on vacations, but I offered another 2 hours to get back. After an hour waiting in line there they give me a Chevy Spark which is even smaller - complete incompetence. I started to be irritated and shout at them about incompetence; they told me they will call the police! Not after I told their supervisor ** that I'll claim my money back. I got a better car with his following words: "I will give you a car you did not deserve!" What a way to treat customer and he should be supervisor! Never use this company, I definitely will not. I recently won a prize in a sweepstakes; a $3400 travel voucher. Our airfare, condo, and car rental arrangements were made by a travel representative from the sponsor of my prize. After the airfare and condo were paid, I was sent a gift card to cover the cost of the rental car. When I picked up the rental car in Maui, I accepted the re-fuel charges, and I declined the damage waiver insurance. I was told I couldn't use my gift card to pay; I had to provide a credit card with my name on it. I was told that I could use the other card when we returned the car.
We were given an estimated total with the rental papers, and when we checked later that day, the estimated total was about what we had expected, (the amount on my sweepstakes prize gift card). 5/31/15 we dropped off the car. As we were getting ready to catch our flight, I realized I had left my purse in the rental car. I was able to successfully retrieve my purse, but we didn't have a chance to look at our Dollar receipt until we got home; and discovered our receipt now shows damage waiver insurance, plus the additional taxes and fees; since it didn't show on the rental agreement I received when I got the car; we felt this had to be an error. My Discover card has paid this bill, clearly a billing error that needs to be corrected. I want the damage waiver, taxes, and all additional fees credited back to my Discover card.

I was assured that there would be no problem and signed forms "releasing" me from responsibility for the very slight damage that was done. I would stay FAR away. They blamed me for damage that we didn't do and it ended up costing us over $1,000. They didn't show us to our car at night, they told us that if anything was wrong with it to just come back so they can give me another car. We had to drive to the nearest street light as their section was dimly lit; we didn't find anything wrong with the car so we drove away. Big mistake! When we returned to the airport just after 5 am to drop off the car, there was no one there to receive us so we had to drop off the keys. Dollar opens at 5 am just like everyone else at the Airport.
About one month passes and I get a weird call from PurCo claiming to be an insurance company for Dollar (that's an egregious lie as they are a collections company registered in Utah). She claims we damaged the front right bumper and wanted to charge us $2,300 to fix it. I told her to pound sand -- I didn't know who she was or what PurCo had to do with my rental. I then get a bill for the same amount with no proof of damage and I call them asking for before and after pictures. They only provided pictures of the damage (which was a small scrape on the front bumper which was taken 5 hours after we dropped it off). She then told us that we also damaged a radiator support and that the labor would be several hours. Since we had no way of fighting it because no one was there to receive our car, we had to get our insurance company to cover some of the costs...
They have a racket going on and there seems to be extortion in the works here. If I were to steal money from my own customers, this is how I would do it: RENT THE SLIGHTLY DAMAGED CARS AT NIGHT, RUSH CUSTOMERS TO SIGN AND PAY, THREATEN THEM WITH LAWSUITS AND DINGS ON THEIR CREDIT, EXTRACT MONEY FOR REPAIRS BUT DON'T REPAIR VEHICLE, RINSE AND REPEAT. Go to Enterprise next time, I've never been ripped off by them. Pay a little extra but with peace of mind.

We had an awful experience when we went to pick up our reserved vehicle at the Dollar rental kiosk in Cancun. We reserved a car for one week at a published price of $71. When we arrived we were told we that buying insurance was mandatory despite my use of an AMEX card which in the past has been sufficient on its own to waive insurance. We were given a few options. The first was to leave a $4000 deposit and pay only an additional $29/day. The second allowed a $2000 deposit and a fee of $39/day extra and the last an additional charge of $59/day with a $300 deposit. I'd never been presented with such terms at a rental car company either in the states or international.
When I questioned these fees and deposit I was sent to another gentleman who then said he has a promotional deal which he could offer us. He reduced the daily insurance fee but not the deposit and when I complained further he said, "I'll tell you what. I can give you a car with no additional insurance fees and only a $300 deposit if we attended a promotional tour of the new Cirque du Soleil hotel in Playa del Carmen." We had no interest in spending our vacation time at a promotional event but more importantly were disgusted by this vulgar business practice. We walked away and decided to taxi to our destination in lieu of renting a car.
I remain extremely angry over this and feel that, on an otherwise great vacation, I was subjected to serious exploitation and fear mongering at the outset of my time in Quintana Roo. We spoke to another couple at the kiosk returning their car who indicated they had been dealt with in the same manner. They decided to rent the car with reduced terms by attending the promotional event but also were deeply insulted by their treatment. I can't believe this is a legal way to conduct business. It is certainly an ethical travesty. I can only hope that Dollar rental is unaware of this practice in Cancun. If not you have managed to denigrate your brand and guaranteed that I will never use your company again. I will also do my best to publicize this on whatever travel sites I can.

I filled the car up prior to dropping it off.
Since I thought it was weird that you are not checked in with the car, I took a snap shot with my phone of the full tank and the mileage read. Glad I did that in hindsight, because I received a bill 24 hours later for $166 for refueling charges. When I called, the first lady was rude and said I was lying and I would have to prove I filled it up, when I said I could prove it with the photograph I took and that I could send it to her, she hung up on me.
I called back again and this guy let me email my pictures and is going to process the refund. Honestly though, if I hadn't taken the photograph, it would have been very difficult for me to prove this as I didn't get a receipt from the gas station. I shouldn't have had to do this anyway. I feel that they are trying to scam people by saying that they didn't fill the tank when they did and then putting the burden on us to prove it. About two weeks later I received a bill from Dollar's agent for $838.00 with an explanation that they had the Porsche dealer replace the flat tire with a new one that cost $135.00. In the photograph, I am swollen all over from being in the sun with no water for so long. It would still be another hour 1/2 before we were taken to the Exxon station. After trying to deal with Dollar/Thrifty Car Rentals, I am left to advise everyone what will become of you should you rent from them. On 5/19/2015, my husband and I rented a car from the CLT Airport location of Dollar Car Rentals to drive to CAE Airport (We did purchase the rental insurance). About 30 miles out of Charlotte, NC (at about noon) on Southbound Interstate 77, we had a blowout on the right front tire. We were able to safely pull of onto the shoulder of I 77 where my husband exited the car to change the tire. Unfortunately, there was a lug nut lock on each of the four tires and there was NO KEY in the car to unlock them. I called the Roadside Assistant phone number on the receipt and thus began our saga.
Now, I had to speak to three different people just to determine that we would not be responsible for the tire. (They'd been saying that we could either drive the donut the rest of the way or buy a new tire for the car.)
Now that we were sitting in an Exxon station, we began to call again, only now both my husband's cell phone and mine are on minimal battery life. This person finally (5.5 hours into this ordeal) sent a tow truck driver to fetch us and then go and get the car and he drove us to the nearest tire shop (20 miles deeper into Chester, SC). This morning we drove the car to CAE airport to return it and we were told that no one there could speak with us about it. To summarize the rest, I was put back into the transfer-to-another-extension merry-go-round and finally reached someone who said that she would call the CLT location and speak with a manager. I advised her that I'd much rather speak for myself but was advised that this was the best way. I asked her to be certain to relay the manager's name and number to me so that I could speak for myself should I not be satisfied with his offer. She agreed.
After about an hour, she called me back with **'s lowball offer. He removed a few of the charges and now the bill is $266 instead of $366. When I stated that this was not sufficient, she said that the contract was now closed and "**'s" hands were completely tied. I asked who in the hell closed the contract and there was no answer but she advised that I could call customer service and perhaps they could do more. However, neither **'s last name nor his number could be divulged. So, I was transferred to customer service who answered the phone with "What do you want?" I told her that I wanted the whole thing comped and she said that they were not going to do that but she'd take an additional $60 off. I declined and after another "What do you want?" I was offered $75 off. Feel free to share, share, share.

This time I had a car reserved at a national car rental company but noticed online that Dollar was running a $15/day special that they pick the car. I was in no hurry so I made a reservation about 2 hours before my arrival. I arrived and went to the desk. They were not busy but one woman in front of me was having a hard time with her reservation. She had a confirmed reservation but the Dollar employee could not get the "rate code" correct so even though her reservation had one price the computer had a higher price. The employee got on the phone with Dollar and kept telling them she could not go into the computer and change the rate code. Finally she handed the phone to the discussed lady and the lady said something to the effect of "So you want me to make a new reservation?".
AT this point she angrily walked away. Well I was next so here I go. I handed the employee my ID and credit card and explained to her that I had the car for two days but probably only needed it for one day. She said that was fine. I almost jokingly said "There is not a penalty for early return is there?". Well she looked up and said, "Just a $25 penalty". I was paying $25/day for the compact car (which I have never rented but was will to check it out). She kept typing and I started thinking first "It's just $25 then that's really stupid to charge for early return). I have never been charged for an early return but maybe this day in age there are trying to get every penny out of people so I said "Lets just change the rental to a 1 day rental". She stopped typing and said she could not do that. Are you kidding me? She can't make a reservation? Now I'm feeling violated. I said, "OK then just cancel that one and I will make one on my computer".
She seemed happy with that. So I stood at the desk and made another reservation. I finished the reservation and she then informed me with a gleam in her eyes that I could sit over there in a seat because it would take at least 30 min. for her to receive my reservation. Really? Now she's messing with me. I went and got my bag and came back 20 min. later long enough to see the same women that was in front of me be told her reservation was not in their computer yet and she would also have to wait. She stormed off and rented from another carrier. I asked the lady to check for mine and was told it hadn't been 30 min and to sit down in those same chairs. I called your customer service number upon arriving at my hotel and talked with an agent and I asked to speak with a manager because I was not going to pay more for a decent car when I should have had that to begin with, had I know this I would of went elsewhere, I have never had poor service or anything like this happen and I rent cars a lot. He put me on hold and then came back asking me for my number and said that the manager would call me back.
I have yet to get a phone call and if your service was up to par, someone would of called me back and made things right, I am the customer here. So this tells me that your company don't care about good customer service and I'm totally dis-satisfied with my whole experience. Word of mouth goes a long way whether something was good or bad. I will Never use your company again and I will suggest to my friends via Facebook not to as well. Someone could of at least called me back to say something even if it was not what I wanted to hear. I will post this issue on Facebook, no one should have to go through this dealing with this company, they should be put out of business... PERIOD. I didn't take their insurance and I went over the car with a fine tooth comb took pictures of all dents etc...

We landed at Tampa to pick up our preordered car from Dollar. We requested a Ford Focus sized vehicle but when we collected our vehicle it was a Chevrolet Spark. We were disappointed but as we had been up for 20 hours we took it. On the way out of the airport the passenger airbag light came on but we continued to St. Petersberg. I contacted Dollar who didn't want to know either about the fault or the car being so small and underpowered. It was grouped as a CDAR, and I think it's a money saver for Dollar as it's not an interstate vehicle. I spoke to a number of locals who all spoke badly of Dollar, never again. It's been a lesson in life for me. I'm back to Alamo or Enterprise.

We arrived for our pre rental at the Fort Myers airport. The rental agent wanted to charge us $300 extra for tolls. We said no. Also another $300 plus for an extra driver. Again we said no. We purchased a Florida Sun Pass at AAA for $25, activated it, and incurred approximately $11 in tolls. The first car we rented had a broken front seat and we returned it for a replacement.
After turning our vehicle in, we received a bill from Dollar for $114.80. They said this charge was for tolls. We sent them documentation for our tolls. Then they reduced the charge to $11.80. (They charge a service charge of $15 per unpaid toll). Their customer service today told us that the toll charges were in the Florida Keys. We were never there! We were on a one week cruise during our 30 day stay and the vehicle was left in Fort Lauderdale. They now want documentation that we were on the cruise to drop the charges. We estimate that we have expended well over 12 hours of our time dealing with their errors. Do yourself a favor. Join us and never ever rent from Dollar!

The Dollar Rental registration process is a scam. I was charged $ 83.97 for Loss Damage Waiver which I did not want. May 6, 2015 at the Denver Airport I completed the rental process using their small monitor to decline options listed on 20 unreadable screens. Upon completing the process, I told the agent that I did not want any options. She assured me what I did was correct. I signed the form and was given an unreadable receipt (print too light to see). Later, I received an email receipt showing the charge for the waiver. When I called to have it corrected, the customer agent, **, said I had authorized the option. End of story, no chance of speaking to a manager. This registration process is trickery - a scam with no recourse.

I had rented compact car weekend, and I had pre-booked it which showed total charges to around 75 dollars. When I went to pick up rental car, the lady representative was good enough to ask all questions and I only signed up for supplementary insurance which was 27 dollars a day so if I calculate it would be around 129 dollars but when I returned my car they charged me 174 dollars which was a surprise to me as I was expecting 130 or some. After that I called their customer care and tried to ask her to explain all charges and without hesitation she said "All charges are under contract and I don't see any overcharge" and said "Have a nice day". This was completely harsh and rude, and I am sorry I would not accept it, felt cheated.

I want to be honest as possible. Please do not go to the Dollar Rent A Car in 1025 S La Brea Los Angeles 90019. I rented a van for my wedding in Vegas. 4 people were going. We waived the insurance and used our own. The manager said as long as we showed proof. We showed that our insurance carriers over. He said "That's fine." We went on our trip, brought the car back in the same condition. We got charged for a week of insurance. He said we never showed proof of insurance. We said, "But in front of us you said it's fine. We brought the contract before we even rented the car." Then he stated, "That's not valid." We were blown away. He then said, "Your insurance has to fax it." We said, "Ok fine."
We went home, got our insurance to fax it and for 2 weeks the manager played phone tag with us stating he never received it. Then I guess he got tired of us calling. He said, "I received it but it's 45 pages worth." He yelled at me and said, "You used all my ink and paper. I am sick of this and you." Then he hung up. I been contacting the BBB ever since. I left a bad review on Yelp and many others have too. We lost 120 dollars that we can never get back. Please stay away. I promise you it is a big mistake.

My husband and I rented a vehicle from Dollar in Florida while on vacation from Canada. We paid the optional insurance with Dollar (SLI) plus we used additional personal Canadian Insurance (ICBC) for coverage. Unfortunately, we were in a car accident in Miami. This was both our first car accident we have ever been in and were both very shaken up; after being hit entering an intersection by a speeding 21 year old, who was changing lanes in an intersection. He hit our rear tire on the passenger side sending us spinning through the intersection and deploying the airbags. I was badly burnt and bruised by the side airbags from my elbow to shoulder.
We flagged down a taxi to take us to Miami Airport/Dollar to fill out accident report and get another vehicle for the duration of our trip. There we filled out all the accident reports, gave copies of police report and towing company information. We also called our personal insurance company in Canada filing a claim giving Dollar all of our insurance information. We expected to get another vehicle... Just the opposite! The manager approached us saying "you don't even know where our car is or how it's being paid for and you think we are giving you another car." Absolutely, shocked and disgusted that he never even bothered to asked me if I was ok, clearly seeing I was bandaged up and had no regard. We had an hour drive back to our hotel. Our insurance company even talked to the manager on the phone saying we were 100% covered for another vehicle. He said "no way, you're not getting another car. Go somewhere else."
After returning home a few days later to Vancouver, BC we received numerous daily automated phone messages for a week straight from Dollar. The messages saying it was Dollar Security and we need to immediately return the vehicle or they are taking legal measures. This ridiculous story still goes on since it's only been a month. We have been charged $704.19 on our credit card for a 5 day rental and the other driver has retained a lawyer. Dollar Rent-A-Car is not getting away with this horrific customer service. Hopefully they will also have to pay something with the additional coverage we paid for and never again will we use them. Thanks to National Car Rental for their services after the ordeal.

Before I get into why I will never rent from this horrid place, I'll explain why it got 2 stars! An employ named ** at the Dollar rental located near LaGuardia Airport was one of the best employs I've come in contact with anywhere. He was so kind and helpful and talked to me like buddy, like on the same level. I could tell he cared about me and getting me a nice car. It is a shame there wasn't more of him. So, this man got us an amazing car that was spotless and smelled great and was cute.
We rented it on Thursday for $180. It was a great day. No wrecks, no flat tires, nothing wrong. We returned it 3 hours early on Friday morning. Full tank and spotless. (At this point all my money on my card was being held. I assumed the bank was doing it thinking it was stolen because it was swiped in three different states in one day.) So, after I dropped off the car I went outside and called the bank (because it had just opened.) They let me know that they were not holding my money. My account was at $27.04 from $400.00. The Dollar rental place had charged my card $372.96. I went inside again to ask questions. I walked up to the counter, with my bank on the phone, and simply told the lady "I had been over charged by a lot." I showed them the receipt showing only $180 and explained I was on the phone with my bank that said they charged me $372.96.
The woman went from nice to evil. She got all hood rat on me and started speaking as if I was dumb. I was not informed that the place would hold a large amount of money till the car is cleared. Then they return it. But yelling at me and being rude wasn't the way to tell me. I tried to ask when it would be returned. It was when she was talking but it was at the end of her sentence and it honestly sounded like she was done explaining (so I cut her off on her last word... not a big deal I had a smile on my face and a sweet attitude.) And she snapped and said "MA'AM. I'm speaking! BLAH BLAH BLAH" I was furious. She told me it would return no later than midnight.
Well here we are the next day at 1:00 pm. No money being returned. I have $27 to my name. and the bank is closed. I have called multiple times but they won't help me. "Ma'am, the people you need to call only work on the weekdays. You will need to call Monday, or come back in then." Funny story I fly out Monday. So I may not get my money back. I wasn't even a bad customer. I recommend that you do NOT EVER RENT FROM THIS PLACE. IT IS THE WORST PLACE EVER. I HATE THEM.

I arrived at the counter after a long day at work and hectic flight trying to make a cheerleading introduction event at my daughter's school.
Upon arrival at the counter, I was asked for my insurance information. I gave them my insurance company name and policy number, but was told I had to have documentation with detailed coverage information. I got on the phone and was trying to have my agent email this information, but was becoming late and was going to miss my daughter's cheerleader introduction. After several extremely rude and unprofessional comments by their staff, I went to the next counter and rented a vehicle from Budget. During my conversation with Budget, I stated I did not understand what the problem was next door as I had a confirmation number and had reserved ahead of time.
The agent at the Dollar counter looked up and was extremely rude and unprofessional and made the statement, "cause we only rent to people who fly in"!! As I'm standing there holding all my baggage renting a car from Budget, and paying twice the price that I was promised through Dollar, I am wondering how a company so unprofessional and incompetent can even stay in business. I called their customer service line to ensure I was not charged for the vehicle I was never given and really was not treated much better. So after stating that we wanted to hire the car from Sacramento CA and drop it off at Dallas TX, we received a quote for £545 to hire the car for 14 days. They took the full amount of £545 and immediately after said that a "one way fee" of $500 was required upon pick up because the destinations were different. When we arrived in Sacramento, they swiped my credit card and authorised a payment of $1091. $500 one way fee and a security deposit of $500 that would be returned when the car was dropped off at Dallas.
Half way through our trip, we decided that we didn't want to travel all the way to Texas and decided to stay in Las Vegas for the remainder of our holiday. We immediately notified Dollar and told them the situation and they said that because we were giving the car back early, we were due a refund of the remaining days still left on the car. So, we filled the tank with fuel and dropped it off at Las Vegas. The extremely rude woman occupying the booth said that we would receive a refund of $600 minus a EARLY DROP OFF FEE of $250. Terms and conditions state $80 max. Now a week since we dropped the car off and not only have we not received a dollar from Dollar, but They have now taken another $400 off my credit card. I had pretty much the exact same TERRIBLE experience as everyone else posting here. I recently took a trip to Phoenix and used Dollar for their rental services (which I had pre-booked). While talking to the employee I repeatedly denied wanting to use their insurance/coverage because I had my own. After she handed me the keys and directions on where to pick up the car, she asked me to sign some prompts on one of those tiny computer kiosk screens that you use to swipe your credit cards in. Each prompt had a huge paragraph with tiny print, "agree" button, and a place to sign. There were about 9 or 10 screens total. The whole time she kept quiet, and just told me that a couple of prompts were going to come up and that all I needed to do was hit "agree" and sign until they were all gone.
I should have taken the time to read each, but she REALLY made it seem like these were just formalities that everyone had to sign for. I thought that having repeatedly told her I did not want insurance/coverage or extra options would have been enough. I think Dollar gets around this by claiming that "LDW1" (Which was one of the major extra option that I ended up unknowingly signing for... an extra $242.91 to be exact) is "not considered insurance"... which is complete crap. The lady did not print out and give me an extra copy of the paperwork. And I didn't even ask because, again, I assumed that what I was signing was just purely administrative that everyone had to go through before getting the keys.
I ended up paying $305.82 in OPTIONS... that I was not even aware were being added because of the set-up of the prompts and how the employee handled the situation. She just played it off as if they were just administrative screens. Yes, I should have asked what I was signing for, but honestly, the way they have their employees shuffle you through all the steps and the manner they do it... it's just absolutely sickening how they're able to get away with this. I can you sit there and scam hardworking people like this. I should have researched their overall rating before booking with them. It's safe to say I will NEVER book with them again and I recommend that you avoid them as well.

I came from England South London to visit a friend. I hired a car from Dollar using a company that had recommended them. However later I learnt that the Dollar car hire company are a fraudulently car hire company with disgraceful customer service skills. They lack communication. They had added additional charges without my consent and took money from my account without consent. I had consented to $220 coming out of my account and later I found that they had taken $3220 for the rental.
I had to contact the fraud team at my bank to notify them that money was taken out my account. My bank managed to do a conference call where the lady at customer service was very vague about the information and could not clearly explain why the amount was so high. Oh yeah she even told me that optional extras had been added despite me refusing the extras at the Dollar desk when I was confirming my booking.
I had one letter from Dollar stating that the car was parked in the wrong place 8 days after the agreed return date. I had been in England for 8 days and no one contacted me. The letter had no telephone number, no email. It just had a name and address. I agree I may have parked it in the wrong place, however I made attempts to confirm the parking space but did not get through. Apart from the letter they made no other effort to contact me. I had to contact the company that recommended them to get a response. They said they were refunding me and did not say anything else. I was unaware that they were planning to steal money out of my account. My bank advised me to cancel my cards to avoid further fraud from Dollar.
In addition to this they had applied optional changes which I stated clearly when I got the vehicle that I did not require. However, they applied them anyway. I am disgusted and disturbed how they could charge such an outstanding amount without any consideration of notifying myself. Dollar made no attempt to let me know what they were doing despite having all my personal details.
The customer service lady she informed me that there was no damage to the vital however they were charging me liability insurance which I was unaware of in addition to other cost which I was shocked about. I had sent an individual who live in Atlanta to show the company where the car was located, however the person had been treated and told that the police would be called because they were informed where the car was. The individual had also tried to make numerous calls to the company and was unable to get correspondence.
When I made my complaint they actually refused to look further into it and send me attachments confirming that I agreed to pay $220. Then they sent me agreement of $3220.02 WHICH WAS NOT SIGNED HOWEVER THEY STUCK BY IT. First time going to America and I am actually put off. I am advising anyone who is coming from abroad to find an alternative car rental company. It’s the worst service that I have experienced.

I asked the rep on the phone, "What is my Final Charge?" after I knew the last day I would stay. He told me, "$262”! I asked, "That's It, Right? No more charges?!" He said, "that is the final bill." I arrive to the airport to drop off the car, the rep states to me “final charge is, $330.03”, and states that it’s because I returned the car late! I did not have time to argue with him and I did not have a chance to fill the 1/4 of a tank missing because I was going to miss my flight, so they charged me $ $48.31 for the gas missing and the rest I have no idea why!
I just contact the customer service in Corporate, and they informed me of the charge the rep failed to mention to me!! The representative at Dollar Rental lied to me! Again, it makes no sense. PLEASE let everyone know that when it comes to extending a rental agreement, they get the charges in writing immediately before they make their decisions based upon a "sale" representative statements!

I rented a car on February 23rd, 2015 at the Orlando airport and one month later got a phone call saying I returned the car with damage to it and they wanted me to pay for it. There was no damage on the vehicle when I returned it and nothing was noted by the person checking me in, other than mileage reading and having a full tank of gas. When I protested, the person on the phone got nasty and told me that according to the rental agreement I signed I was responsible for whatever damage they said was on the car, NO MATTER WHAT.
They didn't care if their employee signed off or not. I wrote a letter to the company and explained the situation and several weeks later received a letter from the Dollar Claim Center that listed a claim number and a charge of $173.00 that they demanded payment for. I contacted the credit card company (AMEX) that I used for this rental and they are going to deal with the claim. When I asked the AMEX people how Dollar could demand payment for something I didn't do, I was told that they do this ALL THE TIME.
They are the WORST, followed closely by Hertz and Thrifty. The law governing car rental contracts is written to favor the company and customers have virtually no protection against this type of fraud. We reserved in advance a car from Dollar at the Phoenix Airport for the dates of March 28, 2015 - April 4, 2015. The rental, and the fees quoted, were specifically for an "SUV Standard - Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo or Similar." After standing in line for 30 minutes late in the evening on March 28th, we received a Jeep Cherokee. I called the Dollar rental customer service line on Thursday, April 2nd to request an adjustment to the account for the difference between the vehicles. After talking to the agent and her supervisor, I was repeatedly told that I needed to have the Manager on Duty at the PHX airport location where we rented the vehicle, make the adjustment. I asked for their phone number but they would not give it to us.
On April 4th, when we returned our vehicle, we were told that there was not a manager on duty. He took our receipt, promised to talk to the manager when he was in the office but would not give the phone number to the location so we could follow up directly. We just received the receipt via email and unfortunately, the adjustment was not make. Needless to say, I would never recommend Dollar rental. The service was the worst possible and even more concerning was that there was fraudulent actions with no way to raise the concerns by contacting the PHX airport location directly.

After 14 hours of flight with a 2 years old kid we went to the Dollar desk to add a toddler seat and collect our car. The lady at the counter tried to sell us few covers and we told her that we want only the one that would waive any cost against car damages like scratches, broken windscreen etc. Unfortunately I didn't check the bill since the only things I wanted to do was to take the car, get to the hotel and let the family rest. Back at home I realized I was sold the PPP, ESP and platepass and nothing that would cover what I asked for. The very upsetting bit are the PPP and ESP covers which were of no benefit whatsoever for me since I already had a travel insurance that covered the same things. And to make things worst, after spending more than $120 in extra insurances I was not covered for what I asked for.
Dollar instead of been sympathetic with tired travelers they try instead to rip them off (and couldn't find a better place to practice this expedient). I'm really astonished that they are still allowed trading after so many complaints. As a customer, when dealing with an official company trading in an airport you expect to find some professionalism and that the airport itself would check the trading standards of any company located in its premises. Avoid completely to deal with them!

I reserved a car 30 days prior to my arrival at Dollar Rent a Car, location: 2600 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Arlington, VA; when I got there a rude black fat guy told me that there is no car to rent. I told him that I reserved a car 30 days ago, then he told me with a heavy annoying voice "Look around you and see all these people, they are waiting for cars as well, and they made their reservations prior to come here also" and I told him why people should make reservation, and he replied "Well that's a way to bring people here to rent whatever cars we have. If we tell people we do not have enough cars to rent and they will wait for a few hours, they will go to different place" and he told me "Why don't go you to another rent a car place and rent your car." But since I did not know around too much, and I did have a car with me to begin with, the shuttle took me from Ronald Reagan airport to their place, then I did not have any other choice, I had to wait for a car.
Finally after two hours, a car arrived at the parking lot, then a young lady came to me and said "Sir, we have a car that just came to the lot. Do you want to take it," I told her, "Well that is not the type of car I reserved", and she replied "Well sir, if you do not take it, you might wait for another two hours, or you might need to come the next day to get what you reserved." I was very tired, I decided to take the downgrade car.
The nightmare is still going with Dollar Rent a Car. Two weeks later I received a Toll Violation letter from them stated that during the time I rented the car, I went to New York in several occasions, I have 5 toll violations, and they charged me $97.44. However during my entire time I rent the car I only drive 79 miles from the time took the car from their parking lot to the time I returned it. The distance between Virginia and New York is 248 miles on way. How can I receive 5 toll violations to New York.
People who are working at Dollar Rent A Car might not know math too well, that's ok, but let us do some elementary math. One way from Virginia to New York is 248 miles, so back and forth is 248 miles times 2 is equal to 496 miles; then if I went 5 times, it will be 496 miles times 5 equal 2480 miles; the Dollar Rent a car people tried to tell me that I drove 2480 miles during the time I rented the car. However during my entire trip in Virginia I stayed in a hotel close to Dollar rent a car. When I returned the car, my ticket showed that I only drove the car for only 79 miles. Don't spend your time to go to Dollar Rent a Car, just go to another faithful place.

For over 20 minutes they harassed and badgered me to sign up for every extra service they have. If I didn't the agent tried to make me feel stupid and guilty. I talked with his manager after the car was returned, and I was told: "We train our agents to ask you 3 TIMES to get you to buy a service. Research has shown that people will eventually buy it." Imagine going to McDonald's and they ask you, "do you want a Coke with that?" and you say “no, I have one”. What would you do if they said "How about a Dr Pepper?" “NO” you reply. "OK, how about a Sprite" - you would go nuts. This is exactly what Dollar rent a car does. They know you HAVE to get a car, and while they have you, they pummel you upgrade.
So, after 20 minutes of this haranguing, I go to the car lot. "We don't have your convertible, how about a nice Chevy Impala?" Really???? I said no, and had to wait over an hour to get the car I reserved weeks prior. The Dollar car fellow said that since Hertz bought them, they have a ton of fewer cars. And the car was crap. 51,000 miles, repainted, top wouldn't go all the way down, the seats rode low like a go cart, the electronic key fob barely worked.
Dollar should be called Nickel & Dime You rental car. Their supervisor pretty much said they know foreigners will cave and buy a ton of upgrades, that's why they keep pushing and pushing. Harassment, pushiness, and no concern for the customer. Car wasn't available for an hour. The car was a year old and worn out. The worst rental car experience of my life.
Plus, if you need your wife/spouse to drive for a bit, they charge $10/day to add another driver. This cannot be legal. Even if the main driver is incapacitated, they'll sue you if they find out someone else drove the car. My could not see out the back (the lowered roof was in the way, and the seats were too low), but they refused to refund us for that. Again, they only care about money. Just a nasty, pushy, insensitive, low class company that belongs in the 50's, in a 3rd world country, that only has $$ as their goal.

We waited about five minutes and got another turn, this man was very polite however a young lady came over to help him, I was at the counter for about fifteen minutes, then off to get my car. I asked for help to find the car in the lot, the man said go down there on the right, there were twenty cars there so I got in a car and checked out. I had to exchange this car at another dollar location later for front end problems. This location was very prompt no problems. Their price was good they never tried to over charge me for anything. I rented a car from Dollar while on a business trip and was not sure how long I would need it. They told me there is a fee if I bring it back early. If I needed it longer that was no problem and they would extend the agreement as long as needed. When I ultimately needed it a little longer they charged me $25 as a change fee. I wanted it for 36 days. They said I had to bring it in for an inspection after 30 days or they would report it stolen and have me arrested (that's great customer service). A supervisor told me I could bring it into any Dollar location so they could inspect it and renew the agreement at the same rate. When I brought it in they were rude and told me they were going to charge more money unless I took it back to the original rental location. There was no need to fill up the tank since I could remain in the same vehicle.
I took it back to the original rental location and they cancelled the original agreement and wrote a new agreement. They charged me $10 per gallon for gas. Then when I brought the car back a couple days early they charged me another $25 fee. They have absolutely no customer service, they outright lie to you, and everyone tells you something different. When I checked out they gave me a receipt indicating the charge would be $1366.27. They billed my credit card $1634.04. I would give them a negative rating if I could. Recently vacationing in Hawaii (Big Island), I decided to hire a car. After lining up in front of the Thrifty booth waiting for someone to serve me, a lady approached from Dollar. I informed her I was wanting to rent through Thrifty as I work for an airline and get industry rate through that particular company. She proceeded to tell me that the two were interlinked (same booth/desk) and I could make the booking through her. When I questioned what price would be charged for the vehicle and what discount I was entitled to, she proceeded to tell me that a discount would be applied once the car was returned and I could pay for the two days hire at that time also.
Upon returning the car (time out 7:11am 3/6/2015, we returned just after 7:20am 3/8/2015), I was charged for a whole extra day and informed that Dollar do not in fact do any industry rates. While I appreciate that man who served me that day was apologetic (**), I think it is appalling that I was blatantly lied to in order to secure a booking in the first place. Perhaps the staff are ill informed of the company policies/procedures or the company cares little for integrity and honesty among their staff. Had I know how deceitful the first employee was, I would have hired a car from anywhere else, at a higher cost. Would not recommend this company to anyone purely from this encounter. I use rental companies when I travel on a regular basis but this was absolutely disgraceful.

Other than the requested vehicle upgrade ($150) and full fuel tank (16 gal @ $2.06 = $33.28) optional items were included in the final cost w/o my knowledge or an explanation as to what was being added and/or how they would benefit us. I was aware at the time of booking and vehicle pick-up that there would be miscellaneous fees (taxes and such) that were required with all rentals. Because I signed the contract Dollar is saying I did in fact acknowledge and agree to the additional options and had the benefit of the coverage for the duration of my rental.
How could I have the benefit of this additional coverage when I wasn't even made aware of what it was or how it could benefit me? Dollar is also refusing (in an email sent to me) to acknowledge any discussion I had with the agent at the rental car counter before signing the contract and being directed to where I could pick up my car. My wife immediately returned and waited 45 minutes for the phone to be located. It had been completely stripped of all information. All of my vacation photos, text message history, telephone listings, etc. were gone. I met with Dollar Rent a Car manager **. He said he would review the parking lot video tapes and call me on Sunday 03/15/2015 with the results of his investigation.
Upon returning to Wisc, I had my phone examined by Verizon. They informed me that someone had attempted to gain access to my phone by guessing the security code. After 10 failed attempts, the phone automatically wipes all information clean. The car had just been returned, they knew who owned the phone. There was therefore no legitimate reason to attempt to access it.
Sunday came and went with no call from Mr. **. I have tried calling him repeatedly at the number he provided. A recording then states I have been forwarded to a voice mail system, however this exchange does not subscribe to this service. Calling Dollar Rent a Car results in endless dead end phone tree options. I finally submitted a written complaint online but as yet have heard nothing. The customer service person said I had to catch a bus outside of the airport luggage pickup. After running around and asking for directions, I found out the desk was actually upstairs in the airport. Then I went through the pick up and told the desk attendant that I did not need the insurance and needed to get the cost down from about $477.00 for the week - reduced to about $280.00. Then I went through some screens and I had to agree on. $45.00 charge for toll roads - just in case I used one? After completing, I had to sign the agreement on the screen - with no new rental total. This is the worst rent a car company to rent from. I wanted to spread the word to all the people that are my friends because the are basically scam artists that do anything to take the customers money any way they can. When I originally booked my car I was told it was going to be 296.46. When I looked at everything the total charges were 492.83... I looked at everything more closely and realized that they charged me for an insurance package for 97.93 that was optional. I was very upset because when the guy at the rental counter asked me if I wanted insurance I said and I quote "if it's not required I do not need it". So when I got back to the rent a car place I tried to talk to the woman and she said she can't do anything because I agree to the charges.
I was calm with her and tried to tell her that I hit agree on the screen because the guy that put the coverage on there informed me that I needed to just hit agree and sign once the screen came up, as everything that was on the screen was everything he just went through with me. So the woman then told me to call the customer service number and talk to them and they could help me. And she informed me that she would let the manager know what the rental salesman had done.
So when I call the customer service number and talk to a different lady she told me she can't do anything either, she was unprofessional and condescending during the entire call. So I politely asked to speak to a manager because I was upset and not willing to pay for the charged insurance that I specifically said I didn't want. She told me that they do not have supervisors that they transfer calls to and that there is nothing that she can do. So PLEASE do not give them business. I've rented for business and/or leisure for over 30 years - this was the WORST experience on all fronts. A comically awful facility with staff that couldn't care less about customers and seem hateful of their jobs. You've been warned: choose anything BUT Dollar for JFK. Filthy, run-down, poorly maintained fleet of cars - and I mean "fleet" loosely since there were only a couple of subcompacts "ready" on our arrival at 6:30 am. After dealing with desk, we sat outside in the freezing cold with no one in sight for several minutes.
Finally, a nice enough guy approached and told us to wait in his dirty hut. He eventually tried to roll us into a half-cleaned compact car that was filthy inside and out complete with horribly stained seats and mystery odors. When we asked for something more hygienic/presentable, he showed us another half-ready car on the line that proved even worse. Front desk was rude and told us we'd have to deal with ** the manager if we wanted a different car. But we'd already been told ** was "out," and, later, that he was too "busy" to deal with our concerns. ** wasn't busy. He was sitting by himself in the warmth of a dark outbuilding and couldn't be bothered.
When we finally had gone back and forth, inside to desk and out twice, then walked around the property and sleuthed him out, he didn't even get up, just shouted at us across the creepy dark room. He was lazy, verbally abusive, rude, and cruel to my young daughters and me, insisting it was our fault -- we were just being "picky" in not accepting the run-down, unready cars we were shown. Then he basically told us to leave. After all that, within 5 minutes of departing JFK, we had a transmission emergency problem (flashing lights requiring that I turn the car OFF on the highway!) and the wiper fluid was flashing low. Our time-sensitive trip was planned with the precision of an atomic clock - no time to turn around and not a single Dollar location on our routing - so we were stuck with this wreck. A few more transmission warnings, calls to Dollar from the road, and our own wiper fluid and somehow we survived.
Felt bad for the two fellows with their pathetic little spray bottles, trying to flip the cars faster. Must be tough working for that cretin of a manager and an understaffed company that doesn't take any pride. Alas, spray bottles aren't enough to transform the Dollar wrecks we saw. Perhaps the biggest joke is that after completing the survey and getting woken up by a Dollar agent this morning to follow up, it was immediately clear he didn't care about our experience at all - only wanted to make sure that a flip, speculative comment we made about what the manager might have been doing on the computer by himself in that dark building wasn't "literally" true.
Seriously? That's all that mattered given the detailed substance of our feedback and time I took to lend genuine feedback? My children could have been injured in that wreck on the highway given the transmission issues among other things. No sincere apology, no offer to do better next time or improve customer service or better maintain the deplorable cars in use, no token 5% or other compensation for our trouble - just some defensive posturing that they "take surveys very seriously" and they are "#2 at JFK. " #2?! Is that so? Says who? Under what metric? What hogwash - internet is littered with upset customers.
I used to think the company and car didn't really matter. And for the most part in many locations that is true. And I am quite flexible and not remotely picky. But when you can't get the basics from a major rental company - i.e., a relatively clean car properly maintained that gets you from point A to B safely - can't get out of the rental place in under an hour, and the manager hides from and denigrates you without grounds, something is clearly amiss. Rent-a-Wreck would have been better. This place should be closed barring a major overhaul.

My recent experience with Dollar Rental car company was terrible. I went with this company due to it being the cheapest out of all the companies at the Sanford airport. I now know why the prices were so low. I was deceived by the customer service agent who told me there would be over 60 dollars in "toll fees", recommending the $ 45.99 "Plate Pass" for my benefit. In my driving routes for a week in Florida, I encountered ONE toll for .75 cents, which was on the way back into the airport.
On top of the "Plate Pass", the customer service agent also tried to scam me into the gas plan where Dollar refills the tank for me, telling me it was the best option, but neglecting to inform me that the gas would cost 9 dollars a gallon. Thankfully I did not choose this option. I found out how much the gas was by reading the fine print on the rental agreement. My vehicle was RETURNED to the SANFORD AIRPORT on FRIDAY, MARCH 6th at approximately 1230 pm. However, I received a voicemail on Wednesday March 11 stating the car was not returned, and would be reported stolen if action was not taken. I then called security to inform them the car was returned 5 days earlier.
Because I already had a terrible experience with this company, I assumed there would be bogus late charges or some kind of fee to rip me off. So I inquired about those fees. I was then refused information about any late fees or charges, and when I asked to speak to a supervisor I was told she will not be coming to the phone. A receipt was then sent promptly to my email address, 5 days after the car was returned. Dollar Rental is a rip off company that will scam, cheat, and lie to their customers to con money. I had to go back and get my luggage and return the car keys. I ended up renting from enterprise. The clerk said to call the manager (Mr. **), I called and he stated “there is no guarantee for a car seat.”
With being a great manager why didn't dollar email or call me to let me know about the car seat? I wasted an hour at dollar. Why not make a note on the reservation and let the customer know that no car seats was available? The manager seemed liked he didn't care and didn't apologize for what had transpired. I forgot people don't care these days.

I recently rented a car from Dollar in San Diego. I had reserved the car online after purchasing my plane tickets from Southwest Airlines. I checked several other car rental companies deciding on Dollar because they were the least expensive and they were part of the Southwest Airlines frequent flyer program. When I arrived in San Diego to claim the car the original quote was ignored. The taxes and other charges on the original quote were tripled. Additionally they charged me for the Southwest frequent flyer program and charged $120 for insurance I didn't need. They told me to return the car by 1 PM, I returned it at 11:45 but was charged for an additional day... they said if I had returned it 30 minutes earlier I wouldn't have been charged. Nobody told me that until after I returned it however.

Landed at Miami Intl. airport @ 6:30 pm. Got to rental center and had 50+ people in line waiting. Finally got to counter with my Premium full size car reservation which was paid online for $142.00 for 4 days. I opted to pay for toll pass and was forced to purchase insurance (they refused to rent without purchasing) which my personal insurance fully covers. Now my total was $310.00. I was sent to the garage to pick up the car and the same 50+ people were waiting for cars.
I finally got to the window and they tried to put me in a subcompact car (I'm 6' 2"), then a Dodge Caravan and whichever car came next. I demanded a Premium full size car which is what I paid for, at about 9:00 pm I was able to get a Chevrolet Impala. I went thru numerous tolls and the toll booths indicated a violation every time. I was very upset over the whole experience. Never again will I rent from Dollar Rent A Car.

In November of 2014 I reserved a mid-size car for pickup the week before Thanksgiving. It was advertized as a Dodge Avenger (same as the 2 years previous). When I arrived at the airport, they gave me a Toyota Corolla. I'm 5'7" and too tall to get in even with the seat lowered to its lowest point. They don't have anything else. So I figure I'll take it and exchange it at the local office at my final destination. I couldn't get that office to answer the phone, so I went to the office and got a run around and excuses that they'd just merged with Hertz so things were changing. Wrong, that merger was over a year ago. I ended up with a a Hyundai Elantra. Only slightly better.
Then I returned the car before the office at the airport opened, but I placed the keys in the box just as directed when I picked up the car. Then I received the receipt. I was charged an extra day because I'd turned the car in a day late! I sent an email and it took a month to get a response after I called them. They said they sent an email to an email I hadn't used in years and wasn't on my complaint form or my online profile. I had to prove I had turned the car in on the required date, I did and they offered me vouchers for a couple days free rental on the same too-small car at a future date. What a bunch of scam artist! Had this been 2013 this location would have had 5 stars. Wish I could give it 0 stars. I am not sure what kind of issues they are experiencing but they need to get it together. The first person that checked me out was very sweet but seem like she was new. She quoted me a price and said that it was including the rental the airport fees and roadsafe. Then she proceeded to offer me what she called "Optional" protections, and I declined them. When I saw that the amount of roadsafe I called back and asked if it was indeed optional and the person on the phone was rude and snapped at me that the person who rented it to me would have told me that. I explained that I was not told that it was optional nor did I know what it covered. I then was charged an hour late fee but I was never late. I picked up at 16:25 and I was in the Airport returning at 16:25. The rude girl in the pink jacket was flirting with the male that was ahead of me.
So I had no other choice but to wait. When it was my turn 5 mins had passed and it was 16:30 and she was very matter-of-fact that there was nothing she could do because it was the computer charging me, but they had my due back time as 16:00 and not 16:25 as when I picked it up. So I was charged a whole hour that I did not use, a whole day on the roadsafe, and another day of airport taxes and fees. And I am still waiting on a callback from a manager. If you can avoid this place you better save yourself the headache. P.S. They most likely get commission off their "Optional" protections, so if you must rent there make sure you DOUBLE check to make sure they are not charging you for additional services, because they will and say that YOU agreed to buy it.

I called Thrifty and they told me to bring the vehicle back to the airport myself and fill up the tank before I did so. Even though I was very far away from the airport, I filled up the tank and returned the car and was given a new one.
Fast forward 7 months. I've been back home and have all but forgotten about renting a vehicle down in Florida. I am checking my credit card statement and suddenly notice a $65 charge (fine) on my credit card. Of course there is no information available online so I call Thrifty. I am then informed that I incurred toll violations when I was in Florida in Orlando and Boca Raton. I did drive in Orlando but was never anywhere near Boca Raton. Thrifty could not tell me why it took 7 months to charge my credit card for these alleged violations (I did pay for all tolls in cash, but don't have the receipts anymore obviously because it was 7 months ago). Even though this company seems cheap, I would not recommend people rent from them. This is one of the worst customer service experiences I have had in the USA. We rented a car from Dollar in Denver to go skiing for the weekend. We flew in on Saturday morning so that we could drive straight to the resort and ski that afternoon. After checking in at Dollar and signing the contract, we were told to wait outside for our car. Outside were 8-10 people standing around waiting for cars, with one employee standing there. Apparently they had run out of cars and were waiting for them to come out of the car wash. We stood there for 30 MIN waiting to get a car so that we could leave. Both the employee standing outside and the manager were completely disinterested and could not care less - no apologies for the fact that they were delaying all of their customers because they could not manage their business properly.
The reason I am writing this review however is because of what happened after returning the car. A week later, I receive 7 calls and automated voice messages from Dollar (on a Sunday night) telling me that my car is overdue and I need to contact their security department immediately. Upon trying to return their call, I was put on hold and then hung up on twice. When I eventually got through to someone, they told me their security department was closed and would reopen on Monday. When we returned the car the check-in person took our contract and did not return it. When we looked at what the return person provided, it showed we requested add'l liability coverage.
I called Dollar and got an extremely rude person who said our contract showed we agreed to add'l coverage. I insisted we did not and requested a manager. At the start I would like to point out that we have been renting from Dollar Rentals out of LAX for years and while we have had issues with the cleanliness and in some cases the overall state of the vehicles we have put up with it due to the daily rate. Our last experience where the car choice was limited to a group of cars that looked like they had never been washed and food and drink had been spilt over the seats has caused us to write this review.
In addition to the above the first car out of LAX was a lemon with the A/C not working and the auto clutch slipped as you pulled out (a bit dicey in LA traffic). When we returned the car they not only were not interested, we were charged an additional $240 because they could not locate the altered travel documents from our agent (even though we had the receipt and voucher).
The second car we picked up from SFO was a little cleaner though by the time we got two days into our trip the transmission began to fail in it as well, therefore we had to go 100 miles out of our way to swap it in Las Vegas. At the end when we finally dropped of the third vehicle at LAX-- no one was interested in resolving our poor experience. Thanks to the efforts of our Travel Agent we ended up getting $120 refund which is still about $180 less than we were charged. In summation all I can say is use another company as we will be in March when we return to USA. It appears the staff are in the midst of a restructure or something and they don't give a hoot.

I was not alone - there were numerous other customers receiving the same information. We were informed that Dollar was short some 70 to 120 cars that day and that cars would not be available until at least the following day. With the exception of one customer service agent who was at least polite and attempting to provide travelers with alternate car rental agency info, customer service support was non-existent.
To make matters worse, the customer service team was rude and dismissive of passengers. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was told none were available. Passengers were not given any info as to how they would be made whole or if they would be made whole by Dollar if they rented from another company. When I asked what Dollar was willing to do, I was told to call Dollar's Customer Service number which, when I did, I learned was closed as they only operate Monday through Friday from 8-5:00. It was a miserable experience which could have been handled a million times better with proper customer service support.

I rented a Toyota from Dollar at Dulles and turned it in a week later. A week after that Dollar notified me that I had incurred four unpaid tolls on Virginia highways and that they would charge those fees plus a hefty handling fee to my credit card. They provided an alleged list of toll violation places and dates. The clerk who rented me the car, incidentally, warned me I would probably incur violations if I did not buy their toll plan.
As it was, on each date the Toyota was sitting in front of my daughter's house far, far away from the alleged places of violation. I contested the violations on the form Dollar provided but received no response. I did so a second time. Still no response. They then debited my credit card. If there is recourse short of involving my credit card company and potentially harming my credit, I'd like to hear it. I'm assuming that they knew the amount (under $100) would not be worth a legal wrangle. I'm assuming, too, that they saw a 75 y/o woman coming and decided I was an easy mark--which I guess I was.

I rented a compact car (very low quality) from Oakland airport as a walk-in rental. The original amount was $92.25 for a 1 day rental. After a long flight back from Sweden, the destination of the car drop off was John Wayne Airport in orange county. I told the lady very clear that the amount was for a 1 day rental and return destination in JW AIRPORT. I returned the car 7 hours after the rental and they charged me $325 for dropping off the car at the wrong location. They put in the contract that I suppose to dropped the car back in Oakland CA (I live in San Diego County.).
I called customer services and they couldn't help me remove the extra charge. Then I was transferred my call to a corporate office to dispute the additional charge. They SAID "NO." HOWEVER I WILL NEVER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE RENT CAR AGAIN FROM DOLLAR RENTAL CAR. AND WILL MAKE SURE NONE OF MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY RENT A CAR FROM THEM. THEY ARE A BUNCH OF THIEVES. Be aware that they are making their money on small prints of their long contracts.

I recently made a reservation for a compact car through Dollar in Puerto Vallarta, for $84.06. The advertised price stated that the car would be rented in the airport. However, when we arrived in Puerto Vallarta, we were taken on a shuttle down a random Mexican backstreet to Dollar's rental center, well away from both the airport and any reasonable competition. There, after a long day of travel, with a tired baby and a sick mother, we were told that we needed to pay $42 per day for basic insurance. I explained to them that I had already made my reservation and agreed on a price, but they did not seem to care about our original agreement.
Since neither Natalie or Olivia could tolerate any more traveling in the heat, and the neighborhood did not feel safe enough to try to hail a cab, we were forced to pay the exorbitant rates - nine times the original price we were quoted. We were also told we would be given a free upgrade to a larger car, which we were instead later charged for. I have spent months traveling in Latin American countries, and have never been robbed so severely - to my surprise by a supposedly reputable American company.

I booked a car two weeks in advance in Punta Cana airport 24/12/2014, reference number: **. When I arrived to the place Dollar's staff said "no cars." All my questions had one answer "no cars" or "maybe cars will be available in couple days!"

I highly don't recommend it to anyone at all. They have charged me for one month toll road with almost 200$ and when I figured out that it is too much comparing to other companies, they told me that they can't do anything about that and I even couldn't cancel it in the middle of the rental. It was a simple robbery!

I wanted prepaid gas. They billed me for a gas tank with 20 gallons capacity, but the car they gave me could carry only 10 gallons. I also left my sunglasses in the car, one hour after I returned the car I called them about it, they referred me to a website to fill up a form. I told them exactly where in the car the sunglasses are, but they told me they couldn't find it.

In August of 2014, I rented a car from Dollar Rental Car in Salt Lake City. I picked the car up at the airport and brought it back a week later. When I dropped the car off, there was no one there to check it. Two months later, I got a phone call from another company representing Dollar. They told me that there were three rock chips in the wind shield. I told them that this damage did not occur while I was driving the car. The lady seemed to take my word and hung up.
Several months later, I got another call asking how I wanted to settle this issue. I said that there was nothing to settle since I did not cause the damage. They contended that they had tried to call me several times and had sent information about this claim. I had heard nothing from them. They called me again recently, claiming that I owed them $40.00 for this damage. I have still refused to pay. They sent me documentation that indicated that they discovered these rock chips two months after I had dropped off the car in August. How many people have driven that car in two months! This is bordering on harassment and is totally ridiculous. Needless to say, I am never renting another car from Dollar and would not recommend this company to anyone. What a ripoff!
