I've rented a car with Dollar in US last October. I had problems with the car and I lost 1 day of my trip with it. When I returned the car the Dollar attendant gave to me a discount in the rent, but after that (when I was in my country, Brazil) they've "forgotten" (or didn't recognize) the discount and charge the full amount of the rent on my credit card. I spent a lot of time sending complaints emails to Dollar, without answers. I am very unhappy and disappointed with the company. They promised something for us and then gone back on their word. I need to receive the money back on the discount. I have the receipt that proves the discount given to me.

I rented a two or four-door car for four passengers for $299/13 days, six months before my trip through Expedia with a third party insurance. Once I got to Orlando Airport I was told the only car they had available for that price was a two-door two-passenger car. I had to upgrade my car for $364 extra. Then I was told that they didn't accept the third party insurance I had purchased. So I had to purchase their insurance for $411. Therefore my total payment came out to $1074 from the original $299.

After making it to the desk in San Antonio Airport Location (after a LONG day of travel), I was given all types of options on cars, other than what I requested. I accepted an upgrade (my fault) for "not much more". It turned out to be about 4 times what I requested. The problem was my charge card had already charged for the basic fee. The salesman (and I definitely mean SALESman) said the charge would be total, which was not true, since they charged that, in addition to my initial fee. I have rented many cars in the past with no problem and I WILL NEVER RENT FROM THIS CO. AGAIN! A disgrace.

It has been my worst experience, very unfriendly personal at the desk. Supposedly you have to bring a receipt from the gas station even when you fill up the tank even if it is filled up or they will charge you $11 + tax. A total rip-off.

I rented a car from Dollar at Miami Airport in October 2014. Several weeks after I returned to the UK, I received a toll charge notice advising me that $1.04 plus $15 admin was being lifted from my account. I am positive that I did not drive through any tolls without paying and I have contested this in writing. I have not received a reply and I wonder how many other people have similar experiences with Dollar. It is only a small amount of money but it's daunting that they can get away with this. All I can do is never rent with Dollar again.

My husband rented a car from these people, and an elk jumped thru the windshield. Our insurance company paid. They left the car in storage for over a month and charged our insurance and our credit card. They are completely unreasonable, unprofessional and crooks. We submitted all the documentation to have the deductible paid by our credit card company (as a benefit of the card). Dollar Car Rental knew the claim was in process and turned us over to COLLECTIONS. They refuse to speak with us much less clear up the error. If you value your credit score, use any other company. Ride the bus, walk, hitchhike, horseback, rickshaw anything but these scammers!

Returned the car at the airport, the employee was nice. I asked if I could get the car back if I can't make my stand by flight, they said of course. Also the tank was not 100% full, I was told he would mark full anyways. If it's only one gallon... so that was nice. I got charged 45$ extra for fuel. When I called I experienced the worst costumer service ever. The person on the phone was rude and didn't try to help or explain anything. Don't rent from them, if something goes wrong they will screw you over, their costumer service is horrible!

Absolute worst experience I have ever had at Dollar Rental Car at the Denver Airport!!!!! If I could rate a 0, I would! The woman at the counter was incredibly rude and trying to up sell our car to an SUV, saying that going into the mountains of Colorado with a 4 cylinder would not work and we were going into elevations upwards of 16000 feet (apparently taller than the tallest peak in all of the country).
Two and a half months after I returned the car, I got a statement in the mail saying that I had driven through 4 toll roads in a matter of an hour and I was charged 72.90 for this. Funny thing is, there is absolutely no way that I drove through 4 toll roads apparently somewhere down by the airport because I was sitting in a chair at a wedding in Breckenridge when I "allegedly drove through a toll road". I called Dollar to dispute this and they put me through the run around and told me to call Easy toll, who told me they couldn't help and I should call Dollar again, who said they couldn't help.
Finally after not getting anywhere, I disputed the charge on my credit card and it was taken off. Then a month and a half later, the charge came up again and I was told after being on hold with my bank for 42 minutes that Dollar convinced my bank that I was in the wrong and owed them that money. I am furious and will absolutely never rent from them again!!!!!

Arrived at JFK New York to collect car on 18th December. First problem was the receptionist was busy chatting to her friends on the other car hire desk and didn't look at me once!! The car we were given was not the car we were expecting, As it was dark and we were tired we continued to our destination. The next day we noticed black marks on rear bumper but the front fascia surrounding the number plate was broken. There was no way we had caused the damage. However, when we pushed it back into position we noticed it looked like a crack that we had noticed and drawn attention to. I was furious.
IN ADDITION!!! the seats were actually disgusting. The fabric was filthy to the point that I bought cheap throws as my sons refused to sit on them. I paid cash deposit of $250 coz I never deal with cards. On return they said it would be 8 weeks before I received my deposit back. When I returned the car to the Manhattan department and told her about the condition of the vehicle that they had rented she was not remotely interested. DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY.

12/14/2014 - we were returning from a cruise in Miami and had five people in our party, so we rented a minivan for less than 24 hours to drive to the Ft. Lauderdale airport. We were told to select any minivan from the ones parked in the designated area. We selected one with the back hatch up and loaded all of our luggage. Upon getting into the vehicle, there was a distinct sour odor which was intolerable. We removed all our luggage and selected another vehicle with the back hatch open. We loaded all our luggage again and proceeded to the attendant to exit the lot. The attendant told us there was no vehicle tracking number, so we needed to backup and select another vehicle (even though our vehicle had no writing on the window and had bar code stickers on it in three locations). We went back again and tried to find a vehicle that didn't have writing on the window, noting the vehicle needed a tracking number (and there weren't many to choose from). We finally found one and were checked out from the rental bay.
We were staying at a hotel five minutes from the airport, proceeded there and spent the night. The next morning we drove the vehicle to the Ft. Lauderdale airport and checked the car in with an attendant, received a receipt and proceeded to our flight home. There was no damage to the car when we picked it up and when it was checked-in at the airport. Ten days later my husband received a call from Dollar asking us how we intended to pay for the damage to the car. The Dollar representative gave my husband the impression the car was damaged and abandoned. My husband told them we didn't damage the car, it was checked-in and there was no damage on the car nor none reported on our receipt. The caller stated he would check into this. Now 22 days later, we have received a letter informing us we are being billed $661.77 for car damage. We have no idea what damage they are talking about and how do we defend ourselves when we live out of state? Anything could have happened to this vehicle in the ten days before we were called.

Check your contract to make sure what you agreed upon is written!!!! I was given only two fuel options when renting a car at the Kona International Airport. Option one was to return it with the fuel filled up. Option two was to return it without filling the tank up and paying dollar's fuel charge. I chose to return it full and the agent had me initial. After checking my receipt upon returning the rental I was charged $75.40 for prepaid fuel. I was never given that option and I also spent an additional $25 to fill up the tank before returning it. I called their customer services to ask for a refund of the prepaid fuel and was told that because I initialed by the prepaid fuel line that I will not be reimbursed. I explained what happened and the fact that I was not given the prepaid fuel options but the agent still would not assist me or transfer me to someone else.
Basically the Kona agent told me something while electing something else. I know it's partially my fault that I did not read my contract completely but put my trust in dollar rent a car to be honest. This is the first time I've rented with dollar and I will not do so again. They are completely dishonest. Do not rent from Dollar!!!

I reserved a car through a third Party rental company online, Rentalcars.com. I was concerned about the reservation, so I called the 800 number to confirm the details of the reservation, particularly the daily charge and unlimited KM's. The gal I spoke with went through the rental agreement with me and confirmed the daily rate with unlimited KM rate. I asked her to email me the details from her email account so I had someone I could contact directly in the event there was a problem. She sent me the email with the section of the contract confirming what she had told me on the phone.
When I arrived at the Edmonton International Airport to pick up the car, I discovered they had no office or rental cars at the airport. I had to call for a shuttle to a location in a hotel in Leduc. When I called for the shuttle, the man on the phone said he wanted to be sure I understood that there would be a .75 cent per KM charge in addition to the daily rental amount. I was shocked!! I told him that was not accurate, that my reservation confirmation would make that clear.
I waited one hour for the shuttle and when I finally got to their office, the clerk coldly told me my reservation did not include any KM's. I showed him my confirmation receipt from rentalcars.com and the email I had received from the woman I spoke with to confirm it. He printed out a reservation record from his terminal that said there would be a KM charge in addition to the daily rate charge. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told to wait. I waited and waited and waited! When I approached the clerk again, he said he could not help me if I did not want to pay the KM charge.
I tried to call customer service for assistance and was given the run around and eventually put on hold. No one ever came back to the line to assist me. This happened each time I called. I rented a car from this company a week earlier in Vancouver and I am still disputing outrageous Admin fees charged on toll charges. I have had the same experience of being placed on hold with no one ever picking up the line to address the problem. This seems to be the way this company handles issues. They simply ignore you until you get tired and go way. I will NEVER use this company again.

After arriving in my country I got an email telling me they were going to charge in my credit card all the toll gates I passed (that weren't necessary, one more problem of the GPS). I answered telling again what happened. Their answer was that nothing was to be refunded - that their gadgets was always updated. They supposed that I was lying!!! Any real customer oriented biz would have charged the lower price and not had me drive to the airport to do the silly transaction.

Be cautious with this company - cheating and scamming from clerk & manager!!! We arrived at SFO at midnight on Dec. 23, 2014. The clerk told us they would charge us the amount of fuel we used. When we returned the car, they charged us for an empty tank even though the tank was about 75% full. Even when I showed the manager on duty of the photo showing how much fuel left upon return, he rudely insisted his clerk reported only 50% fuel left. We explained thoroughly that I don't need insurance as I'm a roadstar member. Still got charged $90 for insurance. They told us they would charge us the toll depending on the amount of times we crossed the bridges, but they charged a flat rate every day, even though we only crossed the bridges twice. Shame on them to do business this way. We will never ever use this company in future. From this site alone you will see how many have fallen victim to this cheating company. Some action should be taken to prevent them scamming again.

We were charged $700.00 for a 4-day rental! Unbelievable, especially considering that we pre-booked online several weeks in advance. We didn't get the car we asked for, they left us out in the parking lot standing next to a second vehicle which had the keys locked inside, and then they put us in a Kia and charged us $700. The customer service at the airport was horrible. Customer service 1-800 number had no response and said, "Too bad," and then put me on eternal hold because they didn't want to address the call. I will never, ever use Dollar Rent A Car again. Horrible experience, and a total scam. We booked a car through Holiday Autos (aka Car Crawler). On arrival at Dallas-Fort Worth airport we presented our voucher, which was in my wife's name, to the woman desk clerk at Dollar Car Rental with my wife's US drivers license and the credit card used to pre-pay for the rental. The clerk asked for her International Drivers License. When told she didn't have one she immediately stated that the voucher was null & void as the voucher required one. I offered my International Drivers License but that was not acceptable as the voucher was in my wife's name.
Her attitude was one of glee, I've got another sucker. What was crazy was that my wife is American, we were in America trying to rent an American car from an American company to drive in America! We ended up having to do a separate rental at twice the price. Dollar didn't offer us the pre-booked rate, we had to pay the "walk in" rate. Car crawler refunded the amount of the voucher less $75 admin fee!!! As an act of good will, we are now going into battle with Dollar whose Customer Service is, it appears, only slightly better than their front of house people.
We were also stitched up over the toll charges as the advice given by the clerk was not reflected in the bill we have received. We were told to just go through the tolls and Dollar would charge us for the tolls plus $15 admin fee. We have been charged $15 for each toll we used. No mention of a phone number we could have used to pay for the tolls. We had the choice of 2 cars, a Fiat 500 and a Kia 2, as we were driving to Arkansas we chose the Kia. 2 years old with more dents than a stock car. Well done Dollar for starting our holiday in a most ** way.

I rented a car in Houston, Texas. Knowing that I would be using toll roads, I purchased, for $62, the transponder so that I could go through EZ Pass on the toll roads. This purchase was HIGHLY recommended by the agent, as I would not have to have cash on hand. The total cost of the tolls at the end of my trip was $8.50. I am being charged an administrative fee of $15 for each time I went through a toll plaza, for a total of $113.40 PLUS the $62 I paid for the transponder.
My understanding was that my credit card would be charged for the tolls. I can see now that the reason they didn't charge my card was so I would be unable to dispute the charge through the credit card company. Also, the bill was sent late enough, and the dispute process takes 5-7 business days, that I will have to pay the bill anyway before I hear back from the company.
I am outraged. Dollar Rental is part of a class action suit over fees like this, and I hope that I can be part of that suit. To be charged over 20 times the cost of the tolls should be criminal. I have no idea what the consequences will be other than having to pay the bill so that it doesn't hurt my credit rating. I will NEVER AGAIN use Dollar or its parent company, Hertz.

I was happy to hear that I am taking the car with full tank and returning it empty, what was not planned, and what happened to me along my history of 35 years of travelling with rented car. I was not told that I am going to pay for this "present", after I mentioned before that I don't plan any additional payments. Later I found, that my signature on taking the car includes payment for this, in addition to 50c per day. It never happened to me in my long experience of car rentals, to sign on items, which were not mentioned before, so I didn't notice that I was signing on these additional items. I found this only after I returned the car. According to my agent, the company agreed to give back the 50c per day, but after two months they haven't done it. I rented a car online from Dollar for 3 weeks $278.98 + plus taxes for pickup at the SF International Airport on Monday, 12/15/2014. My flight was delayed 2 hours so I arrived around 2:30 pm to pick up my car. I was advise by the rental agent over the phone that there would be no problem. When I went to the rental desk there was a car, but that in order for me to rent it I had to accept one of the optional insurance coverages. I didn't know at the time that the agent billed my credit card $704 until after I'd already arrived at my destination 4 hours away. I called customer service multiple times more than 6 to try and resolve the issue by phone. I was told that I in fact didn't have to take the optional coverage and that in order to resolve this billing dispute I had to physically go into a Dollar location.
I called the nearest Hertz location the parent company to try and resolve the issue, but the agent I spoke to stated he didn't have access to the Dollar system and referred me to the Sacramento Airport location which after driving 2.5 hours to get to isn't at the Airport. Once I got there I have had it! I spoke to ** or ** not sure which one who referred me to the Manager ** who kindly shook my hand, listen again to my story and told me he too could do nothing because I rented the car in SF and not from his location and told me I would have to call customer service. He and all his staff watched me dial yet again the customer service number, get transferred around and around not offering help.
Then ** left the front rental area taking his employee with and didn't come back out to check on me or anything. I returned the car very upset, no one cared but they were kind enough to close out my bill and charge me an early drop off fee off $25 fee and a $44 fee for turning in the car at a different location and they didn't give me the $12 advertised rate shown everywhere online but instead $23. So for a 3-day rental they billed me $180!!! I called customer service again and spoke to yet another agent who OVER THE PHONE adjusted the 2 days optional coverage off my bill, but not the other erroneous charges. Worse experience ever. Also the inside of the car was dirty.

I recently purchased a rental on Dollar Car Rental website. I usually wait until I'm in front of attendant but decided to preplan and reserve rental on Dollars website. I seen the option to prepay at a discounted rate $124.00 for the 10 days needed. I didn't notice anything that would have signaled that the purchase would be made through 3rd party company. 2 weeks later when it was time to pick up rental from Dollar Car Rental in Dayton, OH, I owed a balance of $19 at time of pick up. I had cash and credit card but was told I have to use credit card. Since I recently purchased a vehicle 3 weeks ago, for whatever reason it denied me the rental. So I was forced to purchase rental from different company costing me additional $400 since it was last minute.
I contacted Dollar Car Rental for my refund. This is when I learned the agreement was actually made through third party CarTrawler. I contacted CarTrawler about my refund. Two days ago I received an email saying they are not refunding my money and only as a good gesture they will credit me back $42 and keeping the remainder as processing fee. This is beyond insane that I'm charged and wasn't granted access to rental. At best the credit check should have been done at the time when I was charged that way I would have went through a different company altogether. Not to mention my receipt was emailed with dollar letterhead.
I now see so many others have gone through similar experience. This is unethical and unfair business practice to rip people off for their hard earned money when services are not rendered. Upon return we complained about the insurance charge and they said we had the right to decline the insurance at check in, even though the clerk said we couldn't. Don't fall for their scam!

In August I rented a Dollar car at Nashville, TN. A few days later while in Waynesboro, TN. (125 miles away) the side wall on a tire blew out (tires had over 35,000 miles on them). I called Nashville for help finding a local affiliate to replace the tire. Was told no one could help, not to drive over 50 miles on the donut, and I would need to replace with the same brand, size, and type on my own. No straight answer on reimbursement (Maybe, maybe not). Took three days to find, order, and have tire replaced, plus use of car was limited to short trips around town. Their whole attitude was that they could do nothing, and the problem was all mine.
When I returned the car with a new $200 tire on it, and the road damaged tire, I left a note explaining the need for some fair payment on my costs. Never heard a peep. I called twice, was put on hold, and just left hanging in the wind for half an hour both times. They could care less - didn't want to be bothered, and I replaced that old tire with a new one at my cost. Lucky I wasn't on a road trip, or I would have been stuck in some town for three days without any support and unable to travel. Don't do business with these people. I believe they used to be called "rent a wreck" a few years ago, and that's what they gave me. Luckily the engine or transmission didn't go out or they would have expected me to pay for that also from the way they treat customers. Never again will I "depend" on them for anything, or use their "service"!

Rented a minivan in October for Dec 1st-6th from Allentown, PA to Dallas, TX as we were not going back to PA. Estimated charges of 620.06 which was doable and less than flying. At pick-up counter made sure we were returning to Dallas, TX and they said yes on 12/6. Arrive in TX on 12/5 and return vehicle 12/6. They gave us a receipt for estimated charges of 656.00 no problem - close enough. Then two days later our account was charged 1390.34 and held an additional 656.00 that was pending. I called Dollar Car Rental and they told me we were charged a one way drop off fee of 646.86 which we were not told about. They said we could contact customer service, but that the 656.00 would drop off and we would only be charged 1390.34.
So I called customer service waited over 15 minutes to get through. Spoke with Eurice who told us we made the reservations incorrectly and Dollar Car is not at fault. That at the counter they would not have known about the drop off charge. How can your own company not know about the charge? She also told us we were going to be charged for the entire 2100.00 and the 656.00 was not going to be returned. I said we were just told by Dollar Car that it would drop off and she said oh yes if it is an authorization charge. So we are still waiting to find out if the 656.00 will actually drop off the hold it is pending on our account. We could have flown for less than this - whether it is 1390.00 or 2100.00 this is an outrage. Our estimates and what we were told was 656.00 at most! They said they have to send someone from PA to TX to take the van back to PA. The rental van we got in PA had NJ plates. I will never use Dollar Car Rental ever again.

However, we only used a quarter tank of gas. Agent sent us to the wrong stall: we had to find the car on our own. Ridiculously rotten in every regard!! From rental pickup to rental return, to hours of my life spent wasted on the phone with Dollars Customer (OR LACK OF) service there was absolutely nothing about my Dollar Rent A Car experience that wasn't downright dastardly and dreadful! We arrived at the zoo also known as the Los Angeles International Airport Dollar Rent a Car Location on 11/25/14 and were instantly immersed in a whirlwind of constant chaos. Long lines and loud noises, coupled with a strong sense of disarray and disorganization made me question my decision to rent with Dollar before I even reached the rental counter... Should have listened to my intuition I suppose, but I had already paid for the car rental via Expedia.com, and time was most certainly of the essence as we needed reach Colorado in time for Thanksgiving. Due to possible inclement weather conditions in Colorado we decided to rent a vehicle with AWD in the "MID-SIZE SUV" class. After what seemed like an eternity we finally departed the Dollar lot in a Toyota RAV 4, already hours behind schedule due to the Dollar debauchery.
Flash forward 20 hours, 1100 miles, 3.5 tanks of gas, and of course copious amounts of caffeine, we arrived at the Denver International Airport Dollar Rent a Car to return our rental. What happened next was foolish. Freakishly foolish. Upon returning the SUV, we were informed that we would be in fact be charged two full days for the car rental, even though we brought back the vehicle well in advance of Midnight on the 26th. Not awesome. Not at all. If I knew I would be charged nearly $500 for a single days car rental, I would have obviously flown from LAX to DEN and saved myself some serious time and money. Seems logical right? After learning about the 300+ extra Dollars I would be dishing out to Dollar, I asked politely to see a manager to help clarify the extra charges. The manager was or course not on the premises, so we waited around for over half-an-hour, until she wantonly wallowed through the Dollar door visually careless to our Dollar dilemma, and the fact that it was now 12:30AM.
All we wanted was clarification and Customer Service, but that was obviously far too much to ask from Dollar, as the manager (Julie I believe) was short, snappy, defensive, demeaning, and completely careless to our concerns. She even told my girlfriend that "she should rent cars more often, because she obviously has no clue how things work" and "learn to read the fine print." Tired of dealing with the Ding Dongs at Dollar, and tired in general; especially with a 2 hour drive to Summit Co. ahead of us we eventually departed Dollar with a totally terrible taste in our mouths. Tainted and scorned by the experience, would be an epic understatement. We finally got home at around 4AM, hours and hours behind schedule. And with a full day of cooking, and family affairs ahead of us, I think it’s fair to say that Dollar ruined our Thanksgiving. I'll never rent with Dollar again. Neither should you!

I have not asked for this upgrade to Dollar and the seller upgrade the contract without my knowledge. Unfortunately, these contracts are not very clear and as a French tourist, I trusted the Dollar seller, who took advantage of my inexperience. My previous experiences with Autoescape having always gone well, I did not look out of the dollar seller. My rental experience at Dollar Rent A Car at Washington Reagan National Airport was the worst rental experience I have ever had. The rental car lot was a madhouse. It is too small, there was not enough room to handle the cars, and not enough people to take care of the customers. My first disappointment was discovering that Dollar was one of the few agencies that is not at the airport. This required taking a shuttle. The shuttle was overcrowded and skipped several stops because it was too full.
At the lot there was no Dollar Express service. After about a 30-45 minute wait (there was no line, just a crowd of people) I managed to find someone to help me. He told me there were no cars and suggested I take a dirty one that was just being returned by a customer. I took this, as otherwise I would've had to go back to the airport to another rental car agency. I had already wasted nearly an hour at the lot. The car was dirty. Passengers I later had in the car even remarked at how dirty the car was. The car did not have any gas in it. The person before me had not brought it back full. I was told to bring the car back empty. I did.
When I returned the car, the lot was almost the same madhouse as when I left. I did not have time to wait an hour to return the car, so left the keys and the contract, with the written note by the renting agent to bring it back empty on the dash. I did not get a receipt. And then I was charged over $155 to fill it up. I called Dollar customer service to discuss the issue. I was told that unless I had specific written authorization to bring it back empty I would be charged. I said I did. She said that unless I could produce it that was that.
I was given a dirty rental car and simply expected to take it. No offer of compensation or anything. When it was found that the car I was being given had no gas, I was simply told to bring it back empty. I've done this before and there has been no problem. I rent a lot of cars, split between Avis and Thrifty (including some occasional Dollar). I can tell you that if this is not resolved fairly, I will simply use the free days I have earned from Thrifty and never rent from you again -- as well as tell everyone else I travel with what happened. If you're going to cheat your customers like this and not take care of them, you should simply tell them that upfront.

My wife & I were in Houston for 3 days. We rented a car from Dollar Rental in Houston. 3 weeks after returning home. we received an invoice from Dollar demanding a payment of $98 ($8 for 6 tolls and $90 for "administrative fees"). We contacted the Harris County Toll Authority and was told that our rental car did not incur any toll violation. The rental car was equipped with an EZ-Tag that allowed the toll charges to be collected from the account when traveling on those "electronic" toll roads (which we were unaware of). The Dollar employees never mentioned that to us, and the subject of paying for those tolls was never brought up. It was a wicked scheme for Dollar not to mention about the eToll system to renters like us who had never heard of booth-less tolls. As a result, Dollar will automatically collect an "administrative fee" of $15 for each occurrence (even though the toll might only be 50 cents).
These rental companies collect millions of dollars for their silence on this matter. The consumers were never given a choice (of paying on their own or completely avoiding these toll roads). The subject of "administrative fee" might have been written in small print in the contract. It's a deceptive practice at the least. One would not be surprised to find that the "Dollar Processing Center" is nothing more than a sub-division of the Dollar Rental Co. to collect these fees. It's a shame that Dollar has to resort to this tactic to make extra millions. Is it a crime to charge $15 fee for a 50 cent toll? Shame on you, Dollar Rent.

When I reached the rental desk 15 minutes prior to my arranged pickup time, I and several other people were informed that they had no 7-seat minivans left and the only solution was to take 2 standard cars for no extra charge. As I was the only driving license holder in our party, this didn't suit and was basically told to hang around for a few hours to see what they could do which is unacceptable after travelling for 17+ hours with a 7-month-old baby. My husband picked up the rental car from Dollar at Orlando International Airport and was asked if he wanted insurance. He said no. When he saw that it was added, he said he didn't want it. The woman at the counter said it was required in Florida. My husband said he had his own insurance and didn't want it. She insisted that he keep it, holding the car hostage until he signed for it. When he continued to refuse, the employee said the cost ($115.96) would be taken off when the car was returned.
When my husband returned the car, he saw the extra charge for insurance and told the return employee, named Steve, he did not ever agree to it, nor did he want it. Steve told him that he had to have it in Florida. After I heard this, I took the receipt up to the counter to get a clarification. I was very alarmed at the fact that our estimated total was $63 and we were charged $272 for a three-day economy car rental. At this point, Steve said it's all explained on the receipt. When I pushed further, he said that the insurance was an option, but since my husband had signed the receipt there was nothing he could do. This was the first time, in the entire process that we were told the insurance was an "option."
I asked to speak with a manager. His name is Carlos **. I have never experienced such horrible customer service in my life! He said it was my husband's fault for agreeing to the insurance. When my husband explained his original conversation with the female employee at the counter, that she wouldn't let him take the car unless he agreed, he said it was still his fault for agreeing. When I asked for a refund on the insurance portion of the charges ($115.96), he offered me a coupon, in his words, "a good faith gesture to restore your faith in us," I asked if it was worth $115. He laughed and said no. I asked to speak with his supervisor, and he said he was it. I asked him to write down his first and last name and the contact information for customer service. However, all he wrote down was this email address.
I contacted the corporate office and received a return call from Carlos's supervisor. He gave a very insincere apology, telling me that we should have wanted the insurance because if we lost the key to the car it would have cost $500. In the end the $115.96 was refunded. However, given the headache and lies I believe they should have refunded the entire amount we paid. 3) When returning, if you are able to find a gas station open at 4 AM [our leaving flight was at 6 AM] around the airport, they charge over $6/gallon, while we will only charge you $3.45/gallon [for another $60 charge]. We found at least 10 gas stations open within 10 miles of the airport all selling gas around $3.16/gallon!

It's very simple: I rented a car at Dollar Rent a Car at San Francisco Airport for a fairly long time, paid in total around 1000$. I chose to fill the gas tank back myself. When I returned the car, the guy asked me where I put the gas. Naively, I told him where, and it was 12 miles from the Airport. However, in the "contract" it was written in very small at the end that it had to be done in an area of 10 miles.
Obviously, the difference between 10 and 12 miles is ridiculous. He said that they will charge me a Gallon for that, and basically added up to 10$ to the bill. Actually, 10$ in gas for the car I rented filled up to a quarter of the tank, but they charged me this for a "gallon", whereas it was obviously too much, and the price for that gallon is 3 times more than the regular price. The tank indicator was completely full and one couldn't see any difference.
If course, 10$ is a ridiculous sum, I will survive that. But that greedy behavior is what will kill these type of companies. I am a regular renter, now they won 10$ but lost a regular customer because they're so greedy for those 10 dollars which they didn't even deserve. Besides, they tried to sell me various options aggressively and I had to be very harsh to decline them because I had them covered through my other insurances. Both of DOLLAR and Alamo are disgusting. The difference is the dollar over charged me different fees that the original receipt didn't show. The Alamo over charged me gas that I returned with full tank gas. Both of the companies I rent for one day. But they overcharged me around $30 dollars for each.

I have used Dollar quite a bit in the past and have usually had a reasonable experience with them, but I noticed a pretty dramatic change this time. They have really shifted to making profits and caring much less about their customers. You really need to be careful if you plan to use them in the future. I am a business person and understand that importance of profitability, but not to the point of making the customer experience miserable and losing business.
First off, when picking up the car and going through the process, they were understaffed and the line was very long. Secondly, I told the person multiple times that my insurance company covers the rental, but he kept trying to sneak extra insurance in and I would catch it when we went through the screen. The price went from around $32/day to well over $250 for a weekend rental. He kept trying to push me to buy the insurance and said that if the car becomes undriveable within the next 60 days even of no fault of my own that I would be liable, which makes no sense whatsoever as obviously there would be numerous other people driving the car during that time period. He was super pushy and left me feeling pretty annoyed and turned off by the process. He also made a big point regarding not smoking in the car (I do not smoke, so it is not really relevant), but I tried two different cars and they both reeked of smoke. So I am thinking, are they going to blame me for that...I also elected to fill the car up myself and he made a huge point of saying that if I did not have my receipt and it was less than 10 miles from the drop off that there would be a penalty.
This was the first time I have had anyone be so aggressive about it. It was interesting. There were multiple other sneaky, pushy, etc. tactics during the conversation that were just odd. (Am I buying this car or just renting it for a couple of days.) Anyway, I had planned to purchase fuel myself before dropping off the car, but the guy was so nuts about it being within 10 miles that I waited until I was near the drop off area and then could not find a gas station. This was my bad, but then when I dropped it off they charged me nearly $10 per gallon and a bunch of taxes and other fees. The person that checked me out could care less about my concerns or satisfaction and just shrugged and said some obnoxious comment that confirmed my feelings toward the company.
By the time it was all said and done, the advertised cost of $32/day ended up costing over $300 (this is with no insurance or extras of any kind) for picking the car up at 9:33 AM on a Friday and dropping it off at 11:58 AM the following Sunday. It was the least expensive car (a crappy little compact). Using a cheap little car that reeked of smoke for slightly more than two days was pretty expensive in my mind.
I recognize that the gas was my fault, but ripping off your customers like that is ridiculous. I think people go with Dollar for the lower cost, but in the end you are nickle and dimed to the point where it ends up costing you more and you get terrible service and rudeness to go along with it. I am going to switch to Hertz or a company with a better reputation, good service and a customer focus. Dollar could care less about whether they keep you as a customer or not. I left feeling like I just got completely ripped off, which I did.

I tried to contact them to get clarification. Emails sent and no one responded and on the phone they could not tell me what it was about. So I contacted rental cars where I booked the car and after a lot of emails and confusion finally I got an answer. I thought they had paid my fine and was ok with that. Recently I got a reminder and surcharge for the fine by the Dutch police and it turned out that Dollar had only charged me to inform the Dutch police that it was me they fine. Very bad experience and has cost me a lot of money.

We also were told we had to pay for a refueling charge or fill up within 10 miles of the airport or we would be charged a fee. We were still charged a refilling charge. I don't have a European Driver's license since I am a US Resident, but my wife had a German driver's license but the Clerk told me Euro license had to be in my name. I then spoke with the Dollar manager who told me point blank that without a Euro Driver's license Dollar would not rent me the car - I then asked the Dollar Rent a Car Manager to show me the reg that states Reservations made in Europe by Americans need to have European drivers licenses and he refused to do so. He quickly took me through the computer screens without giving me the opportunity to read the agreement. He told me that the additional fees were due to taxes and there was no insurance fees. He lied to me when I took the car and did not realize that he charged me with the rental. I found out when I returned the car and gave my final payment. I specifically asked them if they charge deposits if I pay by debit card (my preferred method), and if they did, I would use a credit card instead. The NEW guy at the counter specifically told me they would not. Well, they did authorize $250 on my account anyway, and it was removed several days after I returned the car. However, this resulted in overdraft fees, as I only keep my spending cash in that particular account. I had a little extra in there, for padding, but not $250. I would have put it in that account if the car company hadn't LIED to me about the charges, or used a credit card to avoid that. And I specifically told him that.

We hired a car from a third party company in the UK for a 7 seater vehicle to be collected from Sanford airport Orlando. We paid upgrades and as far as we were aware we had no other costs to the rental to pay. On collection we said we were going to be doing a lot of travelling so we're offered toll pass at a cost of $32.49 per week. We agreed to this and were told we did not have to pay this now it would be taken out of the security deposit we had to pay. That was ok. We were never offered any other extra insurance or other services. We left with the car to enjoy our holiday. When returning the car to the airport it was left with keys in as instructed.
We have been home 4 days and when checking online banking I saw a charge for $187.89, 2 weeks at $32,49 amounts to $64.98 so I was surprised to see such a high charge. I contacted the broker. They informed me that any on airport extra's were between us and Dollar. I asked what I was being charged for and they contacted Dollar who forwarded to them (then on to myself) a copy of what they say was the rental agreement with all costs on. Toll pass $64.98, road safe 14 days @ $6.99 total $97.86, confeerecchg 11.11% $18.09, state tax $9.96, total invoice $187.89... I NOTE THIS WAS NOT SIGNED BY MYSELF OR OTHER DRIVERS...
I had no idea what road safe even was and when I was sent the copy of the invoice I have emailed Dollar, have disputed this and have asked my bank for advice. I have had no reply from Dollar. At no point in the conversation with Dollar agent was I asked if I wanted any extra insurance that I have since found out this is for (finding out from Google after getting no sense out of anyone) I also have seen from googling it that I am not the only one who has been ripped off in this way... Something should be done. Dollar can not keep getting away with this... It isn't a huge amount compared to what they have charged others in the past but on principal it is three times what I did owe them for the toll pass so I am not amused.

I questioned the service rep about it and was told that it was REQUIRED. I did not want to argue with the expert at that time so I checked the box and moved on.
I called the day after returning the car to have this removed. They said that the rental agreement clearly states that this is optional insurance. Yes that is true BUT the agreement was printed after the transaction was completed and I had told the service rep that I did not want the optional coverage. Taking time at the car rental counter to read the 2 + foot long agreement in detail is not what most people do. So they have you. I returned the car and did not have any charges applied for fuel or timing or damage. One month later I noticed a charge applied to my credit card account by dollar. When I inquired with dollar customer service I was told that a 3rd party company had applied the charge on Dollar's behalf on the basis of some putative fine over which I received no notification nor any documentary evidence. Dollar customer service could not help me further and suggested that I contact the 3rd party company.
I find the practice on dollar's behalf reprehensible and I surprised that it is legal in the US to facilitate charges by a 3rd party in such a way. I wish that I had read through all of these negative reviews prior to doing so because I see some consistent stories regarding how sneaky, underhanded, and rude this company is to deal with. At the rental counter in the Minneapolis airport, I was asked if I wanted to purchase additional coverage and I replied no (I never opt for this coverage through Budget either). Then, my card was swiped and I was asked to press agree and sign. Apparently, the gentleman that I worked with went ahead and added the additional coverage fee that I did not agree to, and I unknowingly signed for it.
When I noticed a very large discrepancy on my credit card account, I decided to call and inquire. I spoke with a very rude, unempathetic, and scripted Representative named Star. She continued to repeat that it was their "policy" not to reimburse and that I "agreed" to the fees by signing. She refused to allow me to speak with anyone else (such as a Supervisor) and continued to repeat that "she was empowered to handle the call on her own". Unbelievable that a company can operate in this manner and I sure hope that more people learn about their unethical practices and put them out of business.

If I could I would give Dollar a ZERO star rating. You think you reserved a car from Dollar on the internet because you have a confirmation code with type of car and price for the rental period. Wrong. What you have is a number. Why? Because Dollar does not have to honor the type of car. If you rented a compact, and even if a compact is sitting on the lot at the time you arrive, you are going to moved up to a more expensive car. Why. Because an Express member has priority to the cars. Your rental for a compact will go to an Express member even though you made your reservation 2-3 weeks prior, and the Express member made their reservation in the van from the airport . Express members have first choice on the cars in the lot so your confirmation to a type of car means nothing. What do you have when you reserve a car from Dollar? Anything left over and at 2-4 times the price.

I recently rented a car, through Priceline, from Dollar Car Rental, in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Dollar Rental charges usury fees for taking their vehicles onto a toll road. Most rental companies charge 4.00 administration fee for each occurrence of driving on a toll road. (Florida's toll roads use "Sunpass", or they photograph your license plate to bill you for tolls). Dollar Rental charges $15.00 for each occurrence. That fee is over and above the actual toll cost. The first occurrence is supposed to be waived. They charged me for that occurrence. The two occurrences that Dollar charged to my credit card, for a total of $30.00, will effectively have me avoiding Dollar Rentals from now on. (The two tolls totaled $1.35)
Thanks to Facebook, Twitter, and TripAdvisor, I am able to spread the word far and wide as to my experience with Dollar's usury fees. After looking into these fees, I have found that I am not the only disgruntled customer who has sworn off Dollar Car Rentals from now on... Furthermore, Dollars Counter person attempted, very aggressively, to up-sell me on "required" liability insurance. After arguing with the counter person for more than 5 minutes, I asked for a supervisor, who schooled him on liability insurance. I was correct; he was wrong. He also told me that I could upgrade to a full sized vehicle, at no additional cost, if I held a Sam's Club Card.
I gave him my Sam's card, and he took down all the info, but when I got outside, I was informed that he never upgraded me. The reason?... Because I opted to not pay for the additional liability insurance! (I carry liability on my personal vehicle, that covers accidents on rental cars. I ALSO carry supplemental insurance, offered by American Express, for liability). So the additional time wasted, with regard to the Sam's card, was for no good reason. I will NEVER deal with Dollar Car Rental again, and hope that their demise is not far off. If they continue with these antics, they'll be out of business in short order!

WISH WE COULD GIVE ZERO STARS. :-( We rented through a 3rd party car rental service (rental cars.com) and prepaid up front. We have done this several times in the past and it makes our lives easier. That is until we had a Dollar rental. We landed at Las Vegas, and arrived at the car rental center, only to discover that the only rental company with a really long line was Dollar/Thrifty - we should have realized then that we were backing a losing horse! So after waiting in line for 1 hour(!) and watching three of their service assistants 'go for a break' while the line kept on increasing, we were really at the end of our tether.
We were asked if we wanted extras, insurance, sat nav, additional drivers - we replied 'No' to them all, except for the full tank of gas at the end (returning the car to LAX). My husband 'beeped' his way through all of the 'decline' and 'agree' options on the payment screen, and saw the final tally of $66.84. He signed for it and off we went to get the car.
We had booked a Ford Escape or similar, and ended up with a Jeep P.O.S. - dirty, somewhat smelly and as basic as a car from the 1980s. When driving down the Strip in Vegas, the brakes were grinding away merrily. We were tired and wanted to get checked in so left it till the morning after to look at the agreement so we could return the car. This was when we saw that our prepaid car, and the $66 extra had cost us $350 on our credit card!! We called customer service, that was a pointless exercise. "Nothing we can do - this is our policy" they said. We replied "But we were never informed of this additional deposit charge." They simply didn't care - customer service implies a service, nope - none here!
We are returning our dodgy Jeep this morning - let's see how that goes - I may be making another update soon. By the way the 'Deposit' hold on our card won't be returned until the rental period is over or the car is returned to Dollar, and then we will have to wait the period imposed by the card company before we can have our money back. We have rented through Avis, Alamo, Enterprise and Hertz, and never had a hold on our card - how much money do you think Dollar makes just in interest on our money that they have on hold?? NEVER RENT FROM DOLLAR - RIPOFF MERCHANTS!

He asked us to sign on an electronic format before showing us the paper, and then we received a paper with all this options included. We did not noticed this until now, when our credit card payment has been charged.
We feel robbed, since it is clear that your employer behaved in a dishonest and unacceptable manner, he was aware he was stealing us additional money, hoping that we did not notice it. As a proof of this: 1) we received the car with full fuel and we deliver at the end of our holiday the car full of fuel, so WHY DO WE HAVE TO PAY THE PREPAID FUEL (45.87 USD)? 2) Your employer made us pay the PlatePass, but IT WAS NOT PRESENT on the car we rented (54.9 USD). 3) Your employer added in a dishonest way the additional insurance, but you can controlled on your video of the San Francisco Airport that we replied using words and hands NO! 4) They rented us a TOYOTA YARIS even if we had paid for a higher class car.
We now want excuses for this unacceptable behavior and the REFUND of ALL THE ADDITIONAL EXPENSES we pay because of your dishonest employer. We are available to supply all the documents you need for the refund. We got a blow out just before Jersey turnpike toll plaza on 07/31/14, very nearly missed our cruise. We made our ship with the assistance of a wonderful State Trooper who managed to locate the spare tire (no manual) and help us on our way. I paid an additional 1 day car rental for 1 hour late return. Today I received an invoice for $32.25 for Toll Violations .75c & $1.25, I know I paid all tolls as we went through them. I have just read that some roads in the USA do not have toll booths but cameras that pick up your car registration. Surely the rental company should inform customers of this anomaly. If this is the case I feel I should have been afforded the opportunity to pay the tolls due $2.25, instead Dollar wish to extort an addition admin fee of $30 dollars. I really feel that Dollar are the violators, not me. I never tried to avoid paying any toll.

Started driving car - it is all over the road... UNSAFE to drive, called a mgr from the road... Looked at area around shifter, pot all over this car and in map pocket on door - showed check in guy. He could care less about pot... filth or unsafe condition of car.. asked for mgr. None on premise, demanded free upgrade for this nightmare... Charged $520 for this rental.

I called the bank and they told me nothing was run and I had never been declined. I'm a 66 year old women. They told me to walk 2 blocks down the street (bad neighborhood) at 2:00 am and try another company. They had no cars and I had to get a taxi that cost $200. We received a quote for our car rental, and picked up the car we requested at the airport. At the desk they asked if we wanted Dollar-supplied car insurance and we said no, our personal auto insurance covers rentals. They said, "OK, sign here; this just means you decline insurance." Guess what? Not true. We were charged $107.96 for 'declining' insurance. Of course we called after reviewing our bill (and finding out that many, many others have had the same issue, based on internet complaints) and their reply was essentially 'too bad, you signed it and consented to it, and we can't speak to the words used by the guy at the desk because we weren't there, but we have your signature showing you agreed to the terms.' Blatant deception. I will never use Dollar again. Unbelievable.

It took 20-25 min for a shuttle to show up at LAX. It took an hour and 15 min to get through the lines. I was told to go pick a car. There was none available. I waited another 15-20 min. When I returned the car I was not told you need to give them a receipt for gas. I filled up the tank full. Explained I didn't know. They charged me anyways. They gave me a receipt that looked like they charged me for gas and removed it like a credit for one fee. They charged my credit card for gas for another fee.
When we got on the shuttle to go back to LAX we had to wait in the shuttle for the driver and his friend to finish talking for 10 min. The bus wouldn't start. We had to wait another 10 min for them to figure out how to get it to move. I put my luggage on the bus and removed it from the bus and the driver asked me for a tip for driving me to the airport. I had to leave my daughter in her wheelchair and go out to the rental lot. The car was not very clean and had many dings and dents. I took pictures and tried it get them to make notations. They put stickers on the car for dents recorded previously! I rent cars regularly so I know what to expect. I gave Dollar a try but what a mistake. Prepaid a hire car through Rentalcars.com from the internet. After a long flight, arrived in Houston Texas late on 11/7/2014 and went to the Dollar desk to pick up the car. The lady tried to get me to purchase GPS two times in the conversation but as I had my own I declined. She asked me did I want to purchase the extra insurance which I also declined. She then said, "It's ok sir. Looks like everything is prepaid", and since I had booked and paid on the 27th August 2014 I thought I was good to go, but I had to sign for release of the car which I did. On returning home I was billed through my credit card for an extra $277.61 for the extra insurances that I had declined. This is not only a very cunning way of extracting the extra money but is also deceit by misrepresentation.
I was also not advised that I would encounter toll roads, something we don't have here in Northern Ireland. Some I was able to pay by coins as you pass but there were a few I now know needed a electronic pass activated by the hire company which they neither told me about or activated. I was also billed for these five toll charges at a cost of $79.74. This breaks down as Toll charges=$4.74 and administration charges of an extortionate rate of $79.74. After reading about this Dollar company on this complaint forum it looks like con the travel weary tourist. When is someone going to do something about this practice? First of all the first time I rented from Dollar! I get in line with at least 15 other people who were clearly upset about their wait. A customer who claimed he had been waiting 45 minutes asked is there anyone else who may help? The customer service girl at the counter at the Chicago Midway airport starts screaming at him telling him in not so nice words he will just have to wait. I was appalled and frankly no longer wanted to rent a car from them, but I tried other nearby companies and without prior reservations said it would be quite pricey so I was stuck at Dollar and not happy ;(.
I finally get my car and they tell me a stall and it's not the same color of car but the same year make and model so I assume that someone made a mistake on the color. I get to the gate to check out the car and leave and again, it's a long wait.. He's upset that I "got the wrong car", I explained there wasn't an employee to help. The car was the right make and model but wrong color.. He made me wait another 20 minutes!
Then one week after turning in the unit, I am getting calls from Dollar 1-866-242-0559 stating they are turning me into the police for the theft of the car I rented from Dollar!! I'm freaking out! I call them back after waiting on line for a customer service rep and she gets on the phone without explanation and says I won't get calls after Monday. WORSE EXPERIENCE EVER!! NEVER AGAIN!! We have been members of their "loyalty" program for a while and always rent in my husband's name. Two weeks ago in Houston I dropped off the car for us while my husband was busy packing to go. I literally drove the car for 2 miles and didn't think twice about who was dropping off the car. Fast forward to last week, we rented a car in Kansas City, went to pick it up and were told we're on the "do not rent list". Apparently me dropping off the car was some federal crime to them.
My husband tried to talk to the manager about this and they basically told him they won't remove him from the list and didn't care to discuss it. I called the customer service number this morning to see if they could resolve the issue because this was basically a misunderstanding. They could not have been more rude or dismissive and in essence said "too bad and we don't care". It must be nice for them to have such a thriving business that they will drop us as loyal customers without a second thought about it. Maybe the WORST customer service I've ever experienced. I am writing in regards to an incident I incurred with Dollar Rent A Car at the Salt Lake City airport. I made a reservation online through Kayak. The reservation was for $480.00 including taxes and fees. We arrived, were rushed through the registration process. I ordered insurance online for $11.99. **, the Dollar agent, said it was that price. We were told to sign on a few lines and were given back one paper to pick up the car in the lot. When we returned the car, I was given a bill for $972.05. The agent couldn't explain the charges and told me to call the next day. I called back that night and spoke to ** who was extremely rude. When I questioned the charge the only thing she said was, "you signed it, it's in your contract! It's highlighted with a purple circle".
She was unable to explain the doubling of the quoted price and denied quoting us the $11.99 price for insurance. I called back one more time after calling my credit card company because I was actually charged $1100.00! The girl who answered the phone was ** and she was extremely rude! I was put on hold because she was unable to answer my question and did not help me before. I was then hung up on. I called back once again and ** was extremely defensive and argumentative. She basically told me she really didn't care if I was the customer or not. That she was offended that I questioned her.
The next day I spoke with **, who was just as rude and unhelpful, she refused to help me and give me a copy of my contract. She also was confrontational and was void of any customer service skills. I asked her who her supervisor was. She said she was the only supervisor. I continued to press for information on who she reported to and she said that she reported to no one, signed her own paychecks and was the president and CEO of Dollar rent a car.
After further research into this matter I discovered several complaints and bad reviews, including a class action lawsuit, on various websites about Dollar Rent A Car. This seems to be a common occurrence with this company. I feel that I was scammed and cheated out of my hard earned money. I am also severely disappointed in the manner that the employees at the Salt Lake City Airport franchise handled the manner. It was unprofessional and disrespectful.

On Thursday June 12th, we booked a reservation through AAA Travel and selected Dollar Rent A Car. We were reserving a car to be picked up at Philadelphia airport on Saturday June 14th at approx. 12:30am, and returning it to Newark Airport on Tuesday, June 24th at 9am. We had to fly into Philadelphia for my father’s funeral. We received a Dollar Rent A Car confirmation in an email from AAA Travel. We were quoted the amount of $564.90. We arrived in Philadelphia at the airport, retrieved our luggage and went out to the car rental shuttle area. It was close to 1am at this point and we waited over 20 minutes with no Dollar shuttle coming. We tried to call and the phone at the shuttle stand was not functioning.
Finally, a shuttle arrived. When we arrived at the Dollar location around 1:30am, we were told very nonchalantly: “Sorry, we have no more cars.” Just like that me, my wife and 2 kids with our luggage at 1:30am in the morning just stranded at the airport with no car. My wife explained to the man that we had a confirmed reservation and he said “That doesn’t matter, that’s not how it works. We don’t hold any cars unless they are prepaid. A confirmed reservation doesn’t guarantee you a car.” He basically just shrugged us off. The shuttle driver advised us to walk over to one of the other rental car companies and he directed us to a path, which turned out to be a hole in a fence that we had to walk over broken concrete and rusty pieces of steel to cut through a fence into the parking lot of the Budget Rental Car location next door. It was pitch black and my wife and kids had a very difficult time lifting and carrying our luggage through this path. That is COMPLETELY beyond comprehension. What type of training do you give your staff? I cannot believe that this is the way you run a business.
When we got to the Budget counter and explained what happened, they were extremely kind and did their best to accommodate us however, with no reservation at Budget, the quote we received was over $1,500 for that length of time and for pickup and return at different locations. They suggested that we rent the car for 1 day and bring it back to Philadelphia and to make a new reservation for the rest of our trip to get a better price. Since we needed to get to my father’s funeral at 10am that morning, and we wanted to at least get a couple of hours of sleep, we booked the car for one day. That one day rental was $211.05.
We called several rental companies to get quotes for the remainder of our trip and each one was over $1000. Finally, I spoke with someone at Hertz (through AAA) and after she quoted me an initial rate of over $1000, she made a suggestion that we take another one-day rental from Philadelphia and return it to Newark the next day then rent a car from Newark for the remainder of our trip since our final return location was Newark. That resulted in 2 additional cars rented and extra gas and tolls out of our pocket, but it worked out to be less expensive. Those 2 charges were $280.89 and $465.72.
We are astounded with the way Dollar Rent A Car treats customers. They were so matter of fact and uncaring. Their attitude was basically ‘too bad not my problem’. In addition, sending us to walk through a dangerous section of their parking lot to drag our luggage through broken concrete and rusty metal through a hole in a fence was very unsafe. We could have been seriously injured.
We believe that Dollar should reimburse us for the difference we had to pay for our car rentals. Here is the breakdown: Original Dollar Rent A Car quote: $564.90, Day 1 rental Budget: $211.05, Day 2 rental Hertz: $280.89, Day 3 remainder of trip Hertz: $465.72, TOTAL PAID: $957.66, Difference paid vs. Dollar reservation: $392.76. This does not even take into account the time we lost and extra money we paid for gas and tolls having to drive back to Philadelphia to exchange cars and then having to make an extra trip to Newark to exchange cars again. Based on all the other reviews I am reading here, I don't understand how Dollar is still in business!

Then when I confronted them on my return, they passed me off from one agent to another then to a "supervisor" who explained to me that I had seen these charges 4 times during the sign in period. What a crook! At this point, I had no more time to argue as I had to get to the terminal. BEWARE... they lie to you, show you a small screen knowing you are in a hurry... and cheat you! So they STEAL your money!

I am glad to learn about the commission on 3rd party liability insurance. The exact same thing happened to us at the Fort Lauderdale Airport this July 2014. We noticed on our receipt that the charges were optional so we went back to the agent and asked him to remove it and told everyone in line to watch out for extra charges. Then the car was damaged and they did not want us to make a report as they said the damage had already been recorded but they could not give me anything saying that. They were angry that we proceeded to mark the damage. We were only going from Fort Lauderdale airport to Miami airport. The optional charges doubled our quoted rate. For the same trip, we rented at the Kansas City airport a compact car and were given a Chevrolet Spark. I notice from other companies that it is in the economy or sub-compact car. So again we felt ripped off. It would hold one checked bag and 4 people. The company description of compact was five people and three bags. We are done with this company even if we pay more.

We rented a car through Dollar.com which was handled by their German subsidiary "Buchbinder/Terstappen" at the Dusseldorf Airport. Upon arrival we were told that we had to double insure the car (damage liability waiver). We called the credit card company through which we are insured against these type of damages and put them on the phone with the rental company. Buchbinder refused to accept this affirmation of existing coverage and said we had to provide everything in writing. So instead of charging us the quoted $400, they charged $1721.59. After several nights of phone calls with the US, I finally got the requested paperwork and they agreed to a refund of Euro 709.72 or $970.68 (see rental agreement #**).
This credit was never processed on the card but held back by Buchbinder against our agreement. Instead there was an additional charge of $117.47 a few weeks later, without any paperwork or explanation. Upon calling them I was told that I had returned the car with a scratch on the front bumper. Therefore the entire front end had to be dismantled and the bumper spray-painted with a special silver metallic paint. As evidence they sent me an estimate by an appraising company, but no proof that the repair was ever carried out. Without proper bookkeeping on their side, without invoice of the actual repair and with the sparse paperwork coming in weeks later - how can I even submit an insurance claim for refund of the money.
I also feel that I would participate in insurance fraud if I was to submit this claim. So instead I disputed the fraudulent charges with my credit card company and filed a written complaint with their parent company "Dollar." They promised a prompt review, but after two weeks I have not heard back from them. At this point, they not only owe me an explanation, but I have spent hours and hours of aggravating attempts to sort things out and they should make up in some way for it.

I was trying to be a good consumer by comparing car rental companies online before my trip to Orlando. I found that Dollar was middle of the road but I had rented with them before so I was comfortable using them again. I got my reservation with my quote of $137.34. When I checked in at the Orlando airport the CS person at the desk checked me in by asking me questions that he answered on his computer screen (which I could not see). I refused all additional coverage and wanted to stick to my quoted reservation. Upon returning my car I received an email with a total of $337.49. How is it that I returned the car with a full tank of gas and it cost me $200 extra dollars?
After reading the email carefully I found that all of the coverage I refused they apparently chose yes for me. I called the 1-800 # hoping to get a credit or resolution and they told me I signed for the coverage. I explained that I signed a screen that I did not see until the end of the questions. She told me, oh well I should have read my contract that I signed. I repeated that I did not get a paper contract and that all I saw was a computer screen that asked for a signature. She told me there was nothing she could do.

I had a terrible experience with Dollar car rental located on Lucas drive by the airport. On Saturday 2nd of august 2014, I rented an economy car Chevy Sonic for the Caribbean festival vacation in Canada. However, when I arrived in Toronto, Canada the car was stolen and burnt on Monday morning. I parked the car in the public parking for $26. I ran back to the Hotel, called 911. The police stated that the car was towed. She gave me the towing company phone number. I called the towing company and they stated the car was found on the street burnt. So, I called the Dollar rental company to see if they can arrange another car for me to get back to Detroit because I was scheduled to work that day. The lady named Ashley I spoke with stated that I have to return the key to the dollar rental company and that my contract with them is terminated. I was shocked. If I didn't have any money to get back to Detroit I would have been stuck in Toronto.
I called the police office, filed a police report and the police stated that I have to go to the impound location in order for them to make the report. So, I caught a cab to the impound location which cost me $30. At the location I waited for the officer to arrive. When the officer arrived I was trying to suggest at least maybe I can clean the shattered glass out of the car and drive it like that. But the officer noticed I was talking out of desperation and noted that the car not drivable due to the driver side and passenger side door been set on fire. The windows were broken. He asked if I had insurance on the car, I stated yes. He said the car company can take care of it from there. So he stated, "The main thing is to get you back to Michigan." I told him what the car representative told me. The officer called the Dollar rental company back to clarify the statement. It turns out the same.
Dollar rental stated that, "Unfortunately we would not be able to arrange for you another car until you return the car key back to us. And secondly, your contracted is terminated." Now how can a car company have me go through all this run around when I have insurance on the car and imagine I didn't have any money on me to get back to Michigan I would have been stuck in Toronto. So the police officer was in disbelieve, he stated never to rent a car from this company again which I now aware of. So he called different car company in Toronto to see if they can rent a car one way to Detroit. Unfortunately he was unable to find one. The God sent officer drove me and my girlfriend all the way to the Greyhound bus station in Toronto.
Right after the officer left us at the Greyhound bus station we found out that the Greyhound bus was booked up until the following day. I took a cab from Toronto to Windsor, Canada. I looked on the cab meter, it read $700. The cab driver only charged me $325 just from my story, he felt bad. Then I took a cab from Windsor to Detroit. I jumped in my car as soon as I got home, went straight to the Dollar rental car location on Lucas drive by the airport. I spoke with the manager named ** about how I was treated ridiculously by his company and how much it cost me to get back to Detroit. He stated that he apologize and understand the inconvenience but that the policy is to return the key and then they can make a decision about getting me another car.
How can I return the key from miles away and like I said before imagine if I didn't have any money to get back to Detroit then I would have been stuck in Toronto. He did not reimburse me the cab fair. Instead of me paying $370 he did his own estimate and charge my credit card $295. I felt like they should reimburse me the cab fare because I had an insurance on the car and it's not fair for the inconvenience I went through and Dollar rental denied me of another car to get back to Detroit. I need your help Mrs. **. If you think there is something that can be done for me to get my whole cab fare back at least or some reasonable amount deduction. I know for a fact that I won't be renting a car from them again.

The entire process was problematic. The line to get the vehicle was over an hour long around midnight on a Tuesday night in Las Vegas. Several people in line went to other rental companies that had no lines to have them match/beat the rate they had from Dollar. The person assisting me at checkout was very friendly, but I asked specifically about how busy they were, and he stated that this was not busy. He said they were not even feeling pressure to rush, or speed things up because it was a slow night. There were 3 employees working the counters, and 1 or 2 of them would often assist one customer and then disappear for 15+ minutes. This happened more than once in the hour+ time I was in line.
During the check-in process I upgraded from a compact car to a Mustang convertible. The upgrade was listed at the bottom of the receipt, but on the vehicle type was still listed as compact car. When I was finally able to track down the person directing people to cars in the lot (25+ minutes to find him), he still tried to force me into a compact car (didn't speak English very well). I had to find a second person that tried to do the same, but I was able to show him the upgrade line on the receipt. He said fine and took me to the most beat up rental vehicle I've ever seen. Being near 2am, I accepted just so I could get to my hotel to check in and get to sleep. When I arrived to the checkout booth, I requested to look over the vehicle so I could document all of the damage already on the vehicle, and she instructed me that they can't do it there because everything was documented on intake. I could definitely foresee that being a problem when I returned the vehicle.
Upon pulling into the lot in San Diego to return the vehicle all of the return lanes were full, so I parked in an open spot. I could not see any employees that were not running around like chickens with their heads cut off, so I went inside where they told me I had to wait and pull it into the return lanes once they were cleared out. When I was able to get it into a return lane, as expected the employee found damage and had me fill out an accident form for the chipped windshield (said he could find the documentation for the rest of the body damage). I disputed filling the form out, but he ensured that I would not be charged for it, but they needed to document it.

Upon picking up the car we reserved 4 months prior, we were told that #1 our "Easy Pass" would not work for their toll bridges and we needed to purchase their "plate pass" at $10.95 a day. Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge once a day is only $7.50 going North, no charge going South. #2 We were told that since we were not carrying our auto insurance card we needed their insurance coverage. Who carries an automobile insurance card? The first car we were given had not even been cleaned out and still smelled from the fast food eaten inside. On the second try the car was fine.
Once I returned home from my trip west, I called and spoke with someone from Dollar Customer Service and I was informed that since I used the extra services I was obligated to pay for them. As if I had a choice! No satisfaction there! After taking an early cross country flight, the last thing I needed or wanted was a hard sale Dollar Car Rental employee pushing me to add extras I neither wanted or needed for my weekend away. When I went to the counter to pick up the car I was told the price was $293. I believe the clerk tried to shove optional insurance coverage, which I had already refused, in on me. I showed the counter guy the quote and he basically said “Tough luck. Take it or leave it.” I think their practices are deceptive, unscrupulous and straight out dishonest. Since other major rental agencies were out of anything but high end cars I ended up spending almost $300 anyway. I would strongly advise anyone considering renting a car from Dollar to avoid them at all cost. Their practices are inexcusable and I feel dirty for even having tried to do business with them.

I agree with the other reviews I have read about Dollar rent a car..DON'T RENT FROM THEM! I rented a car for a drive from San Diego to Phoenix, pick up on Friday 8/1 and return Tues 8/4... Of course the line for pick up was incredibly long, 50 or 60 people waiting in line. I was told to pick a car out of a certain row. There was only 2 available, I chose the wrong one for sure.
1.5 hours into my drive, a part from the front bumper came off. I was driving down the freeway dragging it under the front tires. I had to pull off the freeway in the desert which was about 110 degrees. Called the 24 roadside assist from Dollar, was told to either pull it off or duct tape the part! Since I didn't pay the upcharge for their insurance, they were not willing to do anything but file a accident report against me! I tried to explain it wasn't a accident, the part just came loose.
Finally I removed the part, went to hotel to get out of the 100 degree heat and called again. They said they had a different car for me, just pick it up in either San Diego (120 miles) or Phoenix (200 miles). I then tried to get confirmation that it was safe to drive, a supervisor said it was ok as long as I didn't drive it in the rain! Well the forecast was for flash flooding and thunderstorms in the desert for 2 more days. I stayed at a hotel till the forecast removed the flash flood warning, drove back to San Diego, returned the car ready to explain the problem I had. The worker saw it and recognized that someone hadn't reinstalled the part properly when it needed repairing, they said go and didn't write it up. I am sure if I were to see the repair records for that car, it would show that part was "supposed " to have been repaired recently!
I wanted to write this to warn anyone thinking of renting from Dollar... My car had worn front tires, 44,000 miles on it and bad brakes. I thought since they are a national chain with locations at the airports, they were a reputable firm.... NOT SO.

I got all the driver's information and called. They came and picked up the car. They said, "We will give you another car later." They said they didn't have another so they were breaking the contract on the 1st so we would get charged for 2 days. They put a 900.00 dollar hold on my credit card. We explained we were stuck in Ohio and needed to get another car so they needed to close out the contract and remove the hold. They said they would and it would take 1 or 2 days to be put back on the charge.
On the fifth day, they still had not closed the lease and refunded the money to the card. We keep calling and they keep saying, "We will take care of this." Meanwhile we are stuck and cannot rent another car until they release the funds. I called and rented another car from them and was told they had another car available so then I called and told the representative. He said well, the reason they were not giving us another car was there was no police report. I told them this all happened on private property and the other driver gave all their insurance information to take care of the damage. So why lie about not having another vehicle then change the story? Why hold the funds up knowing we needed to get another car? This is the worst car company I have ever dealt with. The Representative said they might close the rental and remove the hold in 5 or 6 more business days. We only had the car 2 days. I am going to file a lawsuit if this is not resolved immediately.

When we picked up our rental car at LAX on June 1st, we specifically told the agent at the front desk that we did not want any extra Insurance - package because we were fully covered by the pre-booking. He asked us twice and we answered him very clearly twice: NO WE DO NOT WANT ANY, THANK YOU. He then told us that we were right. He could see that everything was prepaid (we showed him our original contract/voucher) and we had nothing to worry about. He then asked me to sign my name on the receipt and I asked him what I was signing and he told me that this was a standard procedure and there were no hidden cost on the receipt. They just needed a signature for them to assure that I was the driver and to match the signature on the credit card.
THEN this Friday (01 August) we have discovered that there was a claim on my credit card of USD 579.99 from Dollar RAC LAX Los Angeles and I have been informed by yesterday that this is a claim on extra insurance and fees and etc!! Please notice that in your agency you have a thief, a liar and a criminal employee at the LAX rental office! You are advised to withdraw the claim immediately to avoid us reporting this incident to higher authorities. We reserved a small SUV with Dollar Rent-A-Car, going through the AAA website to do so. Although we have done business with Enterprise in the past, without problems, we figured we'd save a few dollars by going with this company instead. We also assumed they must be OK, otherwise they would not be endorsed by AAA. We were renting for two weeks.
Our experience picking up the vehicle at the LAX rental office was terrible. First of all, it took the shuttle over an hour to arrive at the airport. Not only was the driver not the least bit apologetic, he actually copped an attitude and became defensive about the situation! Once we got to the office, we waited in line for two hours (!) to get to the counter, only to have to go through another 25-minute process to get the vehicle we had already reserved. Then, it was out to the parking lot to finally get in the actual vehicle. Well...no. That took another half an hour, because the staff was behind on cleaning vehicles that had been returned. Signage in the lot was not clear, and no one was available to help customers, who were wandering around the lot. We finally tracked down a reluctant employee to help us figure out where to wait in line (again) for the vehicle.
This was our first trip to LAX; I realize that flying in on a Saturday in early June probably means lines for cars, because it's the start of the vacation season, and LA is a hugely populated place anyway. That said, I have a hard time imagining that the same level of truly abysmal customer service and long waits was happening down the road at the Enterprise office. The vehicle, a Nissan Rogue, ran fine for two-week trip, thank goodness. The return process was not as bad as the pick-up process. But, a month later, we got a bill in the mail to pay a $7 toll for going over the Golden Gate Bridge. No problem. Dollar tacked a $15 "administrative fee" onto that toll and took the $22 right out of our credit card on file. Again, maybe that's standard practice. I very seldom write bad reviews of companies, but we will never again do business with Dollar in any location.

On April 29, 2014, I reserved (online) a vehicle for my husband to pick up on June 27, 2014 and to returned on July 11, 2014 in Aguadilla, PR. When my husband arrived to pick up the vehicle, he was told that the amount quoted online did not include insurance. My husband called me in NY and explained this to me and I then reminded him that our personal insurance - Geico (which includes liability, comprehensive and collision) - covers rentals while on vacation. While on the phone with me he explained this to the Rep, but she insisted that he had to take the insurance. In the meantime I checked the internet to see if I could reserve with another vehicle rental company but everything was already booked. I told him to just rent the vehicle and I'll deal with it later.
He was given a 2014 Nissan Versa; he had problems with the acceleration so he called the next day and was told to bring it in and they would replace. He did and was given a 2014 Kia Rio... There was a note on the vehicle about the tire. The woman told him it had nothing to do with the tire - it was the tire sensor that was the problem, but it had nothing to do with the tire or vehicle itself. Well, lo and behold, every other day he had to put air in the tire because the tire had a slow leak.
On July 11, 2014 when he returned the vehicle, he told the Rep about the leak and had explained when he picked up the vehicle it had a note on it about the tire but the Rep told him it was the sensor, etc. He also asked him about the insurance and the Rep told my husband had he told them about it when he first picked up the vehicle then he wouldn't have had to pay for the insurance provided by Dollar. So again, he calls me and I'm clearly upset about this information since the 1st Rep was told about our insurance and we had to pay an additional $279.30 plus taxes which we did not need to spend. We were also charged an additional $55.30 for AET... What is this????? My husband thinks it is the E-ZPass which he only used maybe 4 times and we were charged for the entire 14 days. If it was for the E-ZPass, we didn't ask for it - he could have easily paid cash at the tolls.

The day I picked the car up it, after standing in line for nearly 40 min, it seemed there was a misunderstanding as I was told I had rented a standard car and it would only hold 4 people and I had 5, mistakes happen, so the lady seemed very nice and explained they didn't have a full size car for me to rent. She then went on to tell me she would get me a premium car at a 50% discount so it would only be a couple dollars more and I could get on my way and I happily agreed.
Well I dropped the car off not paying attention to the receipt the dollar man handed me until I was home and to my surprise my total ended up at $666. I'm going through the worst service example right now with Dollar (one star is far too much). I booked a car for 21 days thru the web. They confirmed. They said ok and made me an offer (at €430 - my credit card was already charged with €570 corresponding to the first booking). I accepted the offer and asked for a refund. They emailed back that the price would the same, no refund. I sent two emails because I thought that it was not fair. No answer.
Yesterday, I received by email a voucher for the first booking (they did not take into account the changes). So I went on their website to send a note, but it did not work. So I called (internationally) to ask for the right voucher. The customer representative said he could make the changes but I have to pay even more! He could not do anything else. So I asked to speak to a manager. He put me on hold for ever. I finally hanged up. I sent another email to complain. Guess what? - No answer. Tomorrow, I will (maybe) pick up a car. She said ok and directed me to "sign here" by the x to decline coverage, and I did and I used my credit card on the electronic pad and she put the paperwork into a folder and closed the folder and wrote directions to the hwy on the front and handed me the envelope under my arm as I left with bags and granddaughter off to the car.
When I received my credit card statement which was clearly at least $200.00 more than I had expected, I called Dollar. The woman I spoke with was clearly used to this kind of call. She said that I signed that I agreed to an optional coverage for loss damage (I don't know why anyone would agree to this as it was more than I was even renting the car for!) It was clear to me that this is a practice of theirs. I believe they intentionally misrepresented the transaction. When I printed the reservation it said 12 passenger van, not 15. I called the customer service number and was assured it was indeed a 15 passenger van that I had reserved. Do you record these calls? If you do please play the recording and listen to her assure me repeatedly that I have a 15 passenger van reserved. I choose to reserve it without the additional insurance since my credit card company told me it was insured if paid for by my card. The website allowed me to reserve it without insurance and quoted the price shown on the reservation.
When I arrived in Panama, the attendant at the Dollar rent a car booth told me I could not rent it without the additional insurance, that this was not allowed on vans, regardless of what the website allowed, or what was on my reservation. Doubling the price, trapped in a foreign country with my wife, children and grandchildren I had no choice but to accept the new price and rent the van. When we went outside it was not a 15 passenger van, but a 12 passenger van. The attendant did not care. There were several 15 passenger vans a few feet away, but none available. Still trapped in a foreign country 1000s of miles from home with my wife, children and grandchildren, I had no choice but to accept a smaller van at twice the price. Which I paid. We had to wait hours for a family member to travel 100s of kilometers to Tocumen Airport to help move the luggage and family members that would not fit in the 12 passenger Van.
How can they justify quoting me a price without insurance then when I am trapped and at their mercy, demand I pay it and double the price? They may set whatever policies you choose, but I cannot understand why their website does not reflect their policies. How can they justify their customer service representative assuring me I had a 15 passenger van reserved, then providing a 12 passenger van when I am 1000s of miles from home in a foreign country?I am not a wealthy man. My family saved and planned for this trip for over a year to attend my father-in-law's 85th birthday. My treatment at the hands of Dollar had a very big adverse effect on this trip every day we were there. Avoid Dollar at all cost.

I rented two automobiles in June 2014 from Dollar-Thrifty at the Munich Airport. The attendants gave me the option of returning the car full of gas or prepaying... I told her that we would return the cars full, which after paying $154 for diesel, they were returned Full. After receiving my VISA statement, I noticed they charged me an additional $170 for diesel. I emailed them about the problem, sent them receipts, and they continue to refuse to reimburse me for the unauthorized charge to my VISA account. As a result, I rented two cars for three days and it cost me over $1000! Beware of renting from this company. They will rip you off and blame you for the problem!

I rented a car online and was quoted a cost of $131. When I arrived at Orlando airport to pick up my car, the service was quick, but the man said it would cost me approximately $375. I questioned as to why it would cost so much and showed my print out from the computer confirming my $131 booking. He then stated that Florida state law requires me to have third-party liability insurance and pointed to a small square on the pamphlet about this, I argued that I was fully covered by my own insurance company and did not need this. After 15 minutes of arguing relentlessly with this man about my quote and personal insurance he told me simply "without third-party liability he would not rent me the car", $13.99/day. Taking my $131 up to $374. I was fuming.
I arrived at my hotel, reviewed my paper print-out and seen that this was considered an "optional coverage". I spoke to a few of the group members I was meeting and they all confirmed they denied this coverage with no issue from their rental agents for other companies. I called dollar.com and was informed that the AGENTS RECEIVE COMMISSION FOR SELLING 3rd party liability!!! I was refunded this coverage (but had to find a dollar.com location for this). To add to my aggravation, two of three back seat belts didn't work. NEVER AGAIN!!

Dollar Rent a Car in MSP I give this one star because I can't give it anything LESS. I returned the car on the day scheduled, two hours early. Almost a week later, I got a series of harassing phone calls saying the car had not been returned and if I didn't get in touch with them they would report it as stolen. No one answered the phone. No one answered emails. When I finally reached one person, he said the fact that I returned the car two hours early through off their system. Really? Their system is so fragile it fails if you bring back the car early? Still no resolution.
More harassing phone calls. Second man said their record shows that I returned the car immediately after renting it. In other words, no record that I had possession of the car. Then he said they had the car and had rented it a couple of times since I returned it. So why was I getting phone call after phone call saying I hadn't returned it? More than a week after returning the car I still don't have a statement, which I was promised. And the problem hasn't been resolved. The company is unresponsive.

I rented a car returned on 7/13/14. First when picking up, I changed my reservations from 1 week to 3 days. I went from my reserved rate to the regular rate. This I understood until I was also charged a fee of $25 for changing. So this means if I had just called to cancel my reservation and then walked in, I would have paid less!! The answer was, "this is policy". Next I returned the car on time, except, my daughter forgot to take out our $500 Nikon camera. I called the office when we found out and first I was told that they were too busy now, to call back. I called back. I was transferred to the manager's answering machine. Left a message and no call. The next day I called, spoke to the same attendant I first spoke to. He again transferred me to the manager, Eric, who did not answer his phone.
I called back the next day more agitated and desperate and spoke to Carlene, the manager on duty now. She was polite but in the end, said that she did not know where the key was to the LOST and FOUND cabinet, that the manager, Eric, was out of town for the weekend. She said that unless he called back, there was no way of her knowing. She never called back. I called her back again on the last day I was in the area. She said that there was nothing she could do and to call back on Monday. I called back on Monday and was told that they were busy, to call back. I told them I had called too many times already, that they needed to call me back.
Left a message on Eric's answering machine and have yet to hear from them. Today is Tuesday. The camera would have easily have been found under the front seat as it was placed from the back. The cleaning crew would have found it when they prepared the car for the next customer. Nothing yet from Dollar Rental, the worst car rental company in my experience. Do not use this company just to save a few dollars, because in the end it will cost you quite a bit more dollars... Dollar Rental company is all about the "dollar", not about the customer.

I am from Scotland and was holidaying in Orlando with my family. I hired a SUV from an agent in UK called holiday autos and was provided with a voucher for car rental for 14 days with Dollar. I paid fully in UK with all extras such as collision damage waiver, airport tax, breakdown assistance, theft waiver and third party liability protection. When I turned up in Orlando airport after 16-hour journey, I waited in queue for almost an hour. The agents are very slow. When I signed the contract the guys told me I have paid in full and needed to accept 13 places before signed electronic contract. He said no further charges applicable except for unpaid toll or road offences if Any. He took my credit card details for security deposit of $410.
When I returned the car after 14 days, I was horrified to be charged $283 for optional extras (road safe, PPP, and ESP) which I did not sign up for. I don't know what the hell those things mean!!! I disputed this with an agent in Dollar rental counter and she started arguing that I have signed up for these and showed my electronic signature. These were not explained to me and the guy actually added these charges fraudulently. When the argument became serious and other customers waiting in the queue started looking at us, the lady went in the office and came back and returned the overcharged money $283. This almost took an hour and luckily we had enough time to check in. The outcome is good for us, but the experience with Dollar was a nightmare. I would never recommend this company or thrifty to anyone. I believe there is a lawsuit against these 2 companies.

Knowing July 4th would be a bad time to pick up our car, especially late in the day, I called a few days in advance to check that they'd hold on to a car for us as reserved. From what I now see to be their company policy it's Tell the Customer Anything that will keep them from canceling the reservation in spite of the truth of your statements. As you can guess, there was no car, promises of paying our taxi costs until we could get a car the next day were mere words, they refused to give us information over the phone the next day as to whether cars were actually there or not, etc. Car Rental companies are apparently completely unregulated and know they can go about their business in the most corrupt ways unobstructed.
Renters beware. Get everything in writing and don't take much of what they say as fact. They make it up as they go and simply do not care who is inconvenienced or overcharged. Dollar is not alone in this. Read reviews of the others and you'll see that it's the Wild West when it comes to car renting in America.

I went through Kayak to do the reservation which sent the reservation to Rentalcars.com. On the reservation we declined all the coverages and arranged for a mid-size car. When he checked in they said he had reserved a compact car which was very small and for a minor fee he could upgrade. He agreed and signed the agreement without reviewing it and ended up with a charge of $800.00 on his credit card for a one week rental. The upgrade ended up doubling his fee and they added back in all the optional coverages we declined when we made the reservation. I have a complaint in with Dollar and a case number but their only response is you're out of luck because he signed the agreement. They took advantage of my son who is inexperienced traveler and it appears they do this quite often.

The desk staff member was of very little help and conned us into paying an extra $200 dollars to take optional insurance coverage he told us was "not optional"! He also failed to add a SunPass when we'd asked. We'd not realized this until we got out to the car, by this time clearly too late to do much about it. The car park experience was not much better either. They tried to give us an 'Economy' car when we'd paid for a 'Compact'. We were then made to wait for almost 30 mins to get the car we'd paid for! The car when it did arrive had done almost 23,000 miles and was a nail! Had gearbox trouble and sounded like a wheel bearing or two were on the way out. Won't be using Dollar again. Took my family to Hawaii for the first time. Went to get a car I had reserved 10 months before the arrival date. Was told the car I reserved they didn't carry. My question is why would they have the car on their list if they don't carry it? Frustrating, we waited for a good half hour in line. In that time there were two people that came back in and said the car they went out to get didn't work. Not a good sign. When we finally got up to the desk, the gal told us that they would have to give us a different car.
This was upsetting; the car we got was nowhere near as nice as the car I had reserved. The inside was vacuumed, but that was it. The door panels had dried on mud, the back seat had stains from where people had sat with wet clothes on. The inside of the windows were so dirty, we had to stop and try to clean to see out of. I go to the counter and the lady told me they do not have rental cars available and there was a waiting list of an hour and a half. I told her my situation and that I had reservations and she did not seem to care. She said my options were to wait or I could get an SUV for $40 a day more. I told her that was not an option and I should not be penalized because they do not have cars; they should put me in an upgrade for free. At this time she has an attitude behind the counter like she has been inconvenience and her manager had an attitude as well. That's when the gloves came off.
I told her to put me in the SUV at no charge so I can make my appointment. She said not a chance. I had 2 options and that was not one of them. She then asked if I was going to wait. I then told her not a chance in Hell, that I wouldn't ever rent a car from them again and to cancel my reservation. I then went to Avis and got a rental car right away, but found out that they charged my card twice for a car that I did not rent coz they did not have. DO ME & yourself A FAVOR & DO NOT EVER RENT FROM THRIFTY OR DOLLAR AGAIN!! I wish on their website or fb they had a dislike button.

We reserved the car February 8 for pick up on July 2, 2014. When we went to get the car, they tried to talk us into an $800 upgrade. When we received the car we originally requested, it was dirty, specifically smelling of cigarette smoke, stained seats, cigarette burns on seats, wine spilled in the back, etc.. Just thrashed in general. Not the car you want to spend several weeks in with your children. We went back to talk to someone about getting a different car in Manchester. She just sort of shrugged and said sorry.
As we headed north, I called customer service and the lady told me to stop by Portland, Maine. We could trade it there, but was unwilling to reserve it for us. When we got to Portland, they had no car for us. The man there said we could trade the car at the Bangor airport on July 6, so we tried to call before we headed in to Bangor. However, this information would have been given when I made the booking so imagine my confusion. I, not being familiar with the relevant laws, then basically paid twice the amount I was told I would be required to pay. I left the US saying that I would NEVER EVER use this company again. My trip and my rental was from the 19th May to 21st May.
Imagine my shock and outrage when in July I receive a letter from Dollar Car rental with imaginary toll violations in the amount of $0.77 with their $15 administration fee. Again I am not a resident so unlikely to do the run around required to query this, as I have no idea what this company is speaking about. I also receive this correspondence after the deadline to stop payment from my credit card. I feel like I have no control over the money that these people deduct with their concocted charges.

The man told me the price would still be the same so long as I returned it before the 7th day at 2pm..... (IN my past experience with them I swore I would NEVER use them again.) Not to mention the rental they gave me was VERY poor quality.... The Windshield wipers were broken... (didn't find this out till making my 11 hr drive.. and they didn't work....) The bumper on the car was zip tied and duct taped because whoever rented it before me did major damage and they halfway fixed it.
So I returned the car on Day 6...with a full tank of gas.... to find I have an additional 60+ dollars in charges.. I ask for an explanation.. and the employee was VERY rude and nasty. I asked to speak to a MANAGER and they say there isn't one on site and won't be and that I can call the 1800 number and they will address the issue... I call the 1800 number and the girl that answers is rude and tells me she doesn't see any extra charges I'm talking about..... Then when she finally sees them she tells me she will only give me 10 dollars. Yet I get my bill days later and the amount is even higher than what was agreed upon. I called the number on the bill to inquire about it. The man was very rude. Asked me if we'd driven down a toll road. I explained that we saw a sign but when we got to the toll location it was shut down and there was no way to "PAY" for a toll. Called the collection agency back and referred the info to them. Still not willing to waive the fee and was told that it was our responsibility to know the rules of the road in states we were traveling to and that we signed the form with the "fine print" stating we would be responsible for the 15.00 per violation for admin fees. Basically we are SOL and nobody there is willing to work with us. when we rented the car the man pointed to the area of fine print and explained that it said if we got a traffic ticket we would be responsible for it, NOTHING was said about a TOLL... I show the receipt. He nods, continues to circumvent the car and hands me the 2" printout..
Everything ok... As I walk to office, he speaks English and says I don' t need to go to office, everything ok, just get to shuttle. Rushing around 6am, finally at airport we see he printed that the gas was 3/4 empty and we were charged $120!!!!!! No one answers their phones - only messages and hang ups. These people are good at what they do. Better Business Bureau won't touch them and LA prosecutors office doesn't care about tourists. WE ARE IN A WORLD WHERE YOU CAN DO ANYTHING AS LONG AS YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH IT, no more morals or right or wrong...
Look at these lists of complaints and no one cares. I am curious if the guy that lied and stole my overcharge gets to keep some or does he just get a pat on the back for a job well done... This is customer service American style, like the fine print on your phone bills and corporations that don't answer their phones. We need a better business bureau to watch the Better Business Bureau.

My wife had a two day rental from RDU airport Dollar Rental. Her car was in for maintenance at the dealership. Her rental was for 48 hours to be returned at 6pm. I met her down at the rental place to pick her up at 3.30pm. She left work to return the car early thus allowing us to pick up her fixed vehicle from the dealership. As soon as she pulls up to the rental return place and begins to step out I asked her if she filled the vehicle with fuel. She forgot... easy thing to do when you are juggling a work schedule and still taking a conference call while returning the vehicle. As soon as this conversation takes place the attendant hearing our conversation immediately logs the vehicle in. I inform him we are going to fill the vehicle up with fuel to which he says, "I already scanned the vehicle in, too late."
No one at this point had inspected the vehicle for damage, nor had they recorded the mileage on the odometer. I left with my wife to fill the vehicle with fuel. Upon our return the following had occurred:
1) They had reported the vehicle as STOLEN.2) They had billed my credit card 30USD for fuel (they had not seen the fuel gauge at this point)
3) The manager asked the officer to cite me for trespassing. If I return I will be arrested.
4) Accused me of touching the attendant (male). The attendant on questioning by law enforcement stated I placed my hand gently on his elbow while explaining the fuel situation. However the "manager" tried to turn this into an assault.
5) The manager took pictures of both my wife and myself with her cell phone and stated she was taking pictures of the car. It was obvious she was not.
Cut a long story short, they are money hungry with very poor ethics. They did not properly inspect the vehicle on return and I asked the officer to address this with them. Logic dictates that you provide good service with a view to making sure you treat the customer fairly. We paid for the rental, we refilled the car, we returned the vehicle early. BUT, we were charged an additional 30USD (they pulled this out of this air) and because we disputed the manner in which we were treated we're then told we could not return otherwise we will be charged with trespass. Way to go, Raleigh Durham Dollar Rental. Treating patrons fairly is a better business model than unfairly treating those people that try to do the right thing. Since I cannot return to your premises I cannot rent from you again.

I returned the van with gas level higher than what I had received. Still they charged me for the gas. Did not even inform me that I had been charged. We're very rude, in spite of me being very polite, on being asked about it. When I called Dollar customer service, they informed that the Edison, NJ, where I rented the vehicle is privately run and they do not even have means to see the final rental charges applied.
This is appalling, as we are at mercy of unscrupulous elements fleecing customers in those privately-run shops branded as Dollar Rent a Car outlets. I would not recommend them at all. National and Enterprise on the other hand have always been awesome, it just that they did not had 15-seater van that I wanted, and hence went for this.

Rented a car in Cancun, Mexico. It was advertised at $8 per day. We were then told that it didn't include insurance of any kind, nor were airport fees and taxes included. A 10 day rental ended up costing $800 instead of some reasonable amount. In addition, the car, some sort of VW was the worst car I have ever driven. I learned a lesson. Mexico will never be in my travel plans again.

On May 31 we arrived to Atlanta and went quickly to pick our rental at dollar. When we buy our trip we selected an economy car for ten days and four people. They said it would be a Kia Rio or a similar vehicle. Well they said that the similar would be a Smart car without a trunk. What???
We ask for a manager and for our surprise she treated us in an aggressive manner, talked to my husband disrespectfully and told us to get out of the line and call expedia. After a long shot Expedia told us that they change our reservation to Thrifty which is the same than dollar but like a miracle they to have another car at the same price than mine. She told us that they don't had more cars. The poor service received and the way she treated us is the company policy as she told us. And we also had to pay another insurance because they don't accept ours.

We rented a car from Dollar Car rentals in Oakland, CA while on a trip to visit family. We reserved a premiere car at least 6 weeks in advance. When we got to the location, they checked us in and said there might be about a 20 minute wait. After over an hour, we finally questioned why we had not gotten our car and we were told they did not have a premiere vehicle or anything close to it and that we would have to choose from what they had available which were either compact vehicles or mini-vans. Both of which were not well suited for our travels, but we ended up with the mini-van because there were four of us and four pieces of luggage and a compact would not work.
Our biggest concern was we "RESERVED" a specific type of vehicle and it should have been there and that we downgraded our vehicle but they did not downgrade the price. We had no problems with the vehicle throughout the week. But when we went to return the vehicle we were told there was pet hair in the vehicle and that they were charging us a $150 cleaning fee. The problem is we did not have a pet in a the vehicle at any time while we had it. We were angry and had a few choice words and asked that the manager show us the pet hair. He had the nerve to say he already saw it and there was no need to show us.
I asked for his name as he was not wearing a name tag and he refused and he said he was the manager on duty. We were angry and made it known (but not Jerry Springer style, that's for sure) and this guy threatens to call the "sheriff" and walks away. What type of company does this? This is unprofessional and in my opinion illegal. How can you just determine you are charging people for things without being authorized to do this? I've now read many similar reviews about Dollar/Thrifty car rentals and this company needs to be stopped. They need to be put out of business or forced to change their business practices... It's almost as if their employees get paid an incentive to find up charges and this needs to be investigated.

I originally made a reservation online for a standard sized car. When I arrived at the counter the sales rep offered an upgrade for what I understood to be a "MINIMAL" fee. I apparently did not read ALL the fine print. When I returned the car a week later my fee went from an expected $350 to $850! When I called customer service they said there was nothing they would or could do since I signed the contract. I asked to escalate the call to a manager and the person told me that was not possible and Dollar does not operate that way and my complaint was logged. Infuriating! I understand that I did not see all the fine print in the contract. However, I feel I was suckered and their response was less than ideal. Never again from Dollar! Poor choice of Name for a company that operates like that.

I rented a vehicle from dollar in the Tampa bay airport. 1st off waited for over an 1 1/2 hours for car. Initially had 3 agents and the line was extremely long when 1 agent decided to abruptly leave causing a longer delay. My agent informed me I needed to activate sun pass (similar to EZ pass) at a cost of $44.95 to drive to Clear water beach. Untrue. Didn't go through one toll. Also informed that if I pre pay for fuel would only be charged for gas needed at $3.50 a gallon. Also untrue. Was charged 59.84 for a fuel tank. When I complained about this at return, the return agent had a smirk and refused to assist. They low ball the other rental car companies and then provide poor customer service and provide you with misleading information to recoup that money. NEVER AGAIN will I rent from Dollar.

PLEASE DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM THIS COMPANY! We flew into Orlando Int'l Airport on Thursday 22 May 2014 and picked up our rental at Dollar's counter, we were given a hard sell from the get-go. The clerk get repeating what would happen if we did not take their insurance and toll "meter"... It was so intense that I got a creepy feeling that something bad will happen, if we did not accept! We still opted out and my husband, who was pretty frustrated at this time, told the clerk that we will never rent from them again because hers were high pressure tactics.
Fast forward to early Tuesday morning (outside of the hotel), as we are about to open the car door for our theme-trip... The car door will not open, the remote is not responding. I called Dollar to inform them and the first thing that I hear is... You did not take our insurance, so you will have to pay for a tow truck or someone to check to see what is wrong with the vehicle. And, we will have to pay for it out of our pocket or go to our insurance to get reimbursement!!!! WTH! Then to add insult to injury, the guy says that we must have left the lights on overnight and run down the battery. I was ballistic, I have rented many cars over the years and if there is a problem, the response is to send someone out to check at no cost; or I am advised to take it to the nearest car rental facility for an exchange.
At that point, I Googled Dollar Orlando, only to find that the Orlando's Attorney General has launched an investigation into their deceptive practices and hard-charging sales techniques plus there are over 500 complaints on the internet. I immediately called them back with that info and stated that I will not be paying for anything because it was their car that was not starting. That is when they changed the tune and promised to send someone out free of charge. Thirty mins later, an extremely RUDE man with a foreign accent turned up, open and started the car. I repeat, do not rent anything from Dollar. I believe that Dollar actually put a half-dead battery in the car and knew that it would die at some point, then they take the opportunity to charge the client. I can only imagine what they do to international visitors who don't know the laws of this country; are here for a short time and have to return home; and aren't aware of the crooked, unscrupulous money-grabbers in this country. I certainly look forward to the outcome of any action that the Orlando Attorney General's office will take! I plan to be a part of the class action suit.

I rented a minivan for my family trip to Orlando, Florida (through a travel agency). Everything was fine till we got home, 280 dollars on extra charges, extra insurance we did not ask for, roadside assistance and a 14 dollar charge for a toll. We paid all tolls. I have rented from different companies and never ever had a problem like this. Be extra careful when renting from Dollar and double read everything!!!!

My 27 year old daughter who has never rented a car before was tricked into all sorts of extras, bringing the price up from $50 as per our reservation on the net to $161. Nothing was explained and she was rushed into signing. She was at an airport in a hurry to get to a wedding rehearsal. When she came back they said she had signed and nothing she could do. I tried calling 2 days later to customer service and they where rude and said "too bad"! I had to demand an address to write a complaint and was given an address to Thrifty rental car Inc. When I asked if they owned Dollar I was told the Hertz really owns them.
I am going to write them but the customer service rep told me nothing would come of it. It is a written contract. Their attitude is horrible. And obviously they are in the business of lying in their ads on the internet. I since found out the staff gets a commission for up-selling and they do it without mercy.

Ripped us off $171 for services we did not ask for and nor did we want. We paid everything up front in the UK through rental cars.com and when we got home discovered that they'd charged us $64.90 for a toll pass (we actually paid $10 in cash for the one toll road we used!) and $83.86 for roadside assistance (come on, they're not going to leave one of their own cars broken down somewhere are they?) Not only that, but the vehicle they gave us was rubbish. It was covered in dents and scratches and smelt bad. If we hadn't been so tired and the queue hadn't been so long, we'd have gone back in to complain about the state of the car right then - wish we had now. We have been going to Florida for 25 years and have never had this happen before. We'll go back to Alamo definitely now.

I rented a car from Dollar for my Memorial Day weekend vacation in Ohio just this past weekend. The car was booked online when I made my reservation through Southwest airlines back in February. The total cost of the car was listed at $66.00 for pickup on Friday the 23rd and return date of Monday the 26th, 2014. When I got to the rental agency, I went through the usual lingo where they try to sell you more coverage. Supplemental insurance, uninsured motorist, gas, collision, etc. which I declined all of them. I already have most of those coverages through the Wells Fargo credit card I was using. I just wanted the rental price I had signed up for. Nothing more.
Well after the verbal agreements were done, I was told that there would be series of pages that were going to show up on the small credit card kiosk and to hit, "YES" to all of them (that was merely agreeing to the terms we had just went over and that I had denied optional coverage) and then sign on the last page. When I got to the last page I noticed the price was $163.08. When I asked the clerk why it was so high, I was told it was including the deposit, which doesn't actually get charged to the account if the agreement is honored. Ok, so I signed and was on my way. Well when I returned the car to the airport in Columbus, the guy checking me in said the bill was in fact for $163.08.
Apparently in the screens I was told to hit "Yes" to was me agreeing for, Loss Damage Waiver (Collision), which I clearly told the clerk I didn't want. When I went to the counter to talk to a manager, I was told they couldn't take it off and that I should have read the screens better. I asked why they train their employees to tell customers to do things that serve to benefit the company and deceive the customer, he had no response. I even told him I could supply proof that I already have coverage not only through my credit card but through my existing insurance policies. Paying an extra 111.00 dollars (which is more than the cost of the car) for something I have would not be beneficial even to the dumbest of people. When I called their corporate line, I was told again they could do nothing but would be willing to send a 20 voucher in the mail of my inconvenience.
I told the operator I would be disputing the charge at which point I was now denied the voucher (aren't they special). I have no problem whatsoever for honoring the rental part of the car. In fact when I looked at my receipt closer, it shows I denied coverage for everything but Loss Damage Waiver (Collision). The agent I was dealing with was friendly and I'm actually willing to give the benefit of the doubt that it was probably just a typo his part. But now I am being inconvenienced by it. I have never used Dollar, I usually rent from AVIS. I have never had a problem with renting cars before, but rest assured this will be the only time I will ever rent from this company! I will be very vocal with anyone going forth to steer clear of Dollar.

Hired a car for a week, returned the car on the correct date. Car checked over by Dollar staff & documents checked by staff in the office. I returned home to England. Few weeks later got several letters from Dollar threatening me unless I returned the car I would be prosecuted. Numerous attempts to contact them. Then Dollar took over 1000 taken out of my English bank account without any authority. My bank were very good & we managed to contact Dollar & had three way conversation. Staff VERY rude to us, we were put on hold for over an hour.
We eventually got a promise the money would be returned within 5 - 7 days. No money arrived so we rang back. Staff VERY rude again & when asked to speak to person in charge they were very obstructive. Female manager finally told me she would look into the debacle & after 3 weeks the money was returned to me. What was horrendous was the manner in which the staff dealt with me & the bank & the fact they took money out of my account when they had the car in their possession. I have e-mailed the company and haven't even had an apology.

I returned the car to the San Francisco airport drop-off after gassing up to the full level. I drove straight to the airport - a distance of 10 miles. They asked where I gassed up, and of course I told them. They said that meant I used a gallon for the Ford Focus and the rate was $8.99, plus service charges for a total of $12. This company is made of unethical, unscrupulous gougers and rip-off artists. Never again - their short term gain is their long term loss and judging by the reviews, everyone agrees.
