Don't bother with this at all! It's a scam, and one of the worst rewarding loyalty programs I have ever experienced, worse than Airmiles, which is saying a lot because that program is pretty bad too! Become a member of another flight reward system and never bother with this scammy, dishonest, worthless Aeroplan "rewards"!

4 Hour + wait time on phone. The shortest time I waited was 2 hours. They bounce you around other departments, which you then have to wait an additional 2-4 hours. If the line disconnects, No has the courtesy to call you back after the 4 hour wait. They are rude and condescending and then accidentally hang up the phone.

Be very careful, this company lacks logic and customer service. I wanted to purchase a flight to Germany for $1,688CAD. When I saw there was an Aeroplan point purchase for 50% off the points I read into it, and for $1,000 you could get $2,000 worth of points - that gives you 60,000 points. I thought it was fantastic, because I'd save $688 for my flight.
NO definitely not. I went to go use my points to purchase my flight, and each way had a set amount of points for 60,000 points. It would cost me a total of 120,000 points. But I just spent $1,000 on points. So it said I would have to use my 60,000 points AND pay an additional $1,000.00. Meaning my overall flight actually costed $2,000 rather than $1688.
I of course tried to call Aeroplan, Air Canada, Message them, e-mail them - whatever I can do, but the scam continued. "Technical Difficulties", "Longer Delays than usual", Disconnections. I wasted way too much time. So what I did was I just purchased the flight for $1688, and now have 60,000 unused points hoping that maybe somebody will reach out to me. Overall I have spent $2,688 for a flight to Germany... what A SHAME. For economy class, no cancellations or anything.
Please do yourself a favour, collect the points for many years through your small rewards programs with aeroplan through groceries or drinks, but DO NOT fall for any further scam like I did. They will not reach out to you, they won't even answer your call. Save your money and move on. Just buy tickets like regular people do. Best of luck to anyone going down this dangerous money trap. I guess these companies need to scam people to make up for the money they lost during Covid, it's a real shame.

I am completely unable to spend any points, which sort of makes the whole system useless. The helpline never assists me in any way and they keep bouncing me between various departments before disconnecting me without reason. You also cannot transfer your points out of Aeroplan so I'd avoid it at all costs.

Aeroplan is a joke. I've been on hold with them now for FOUR hours! I came here to see if anyone else has had this experience and yes, it seems to be the norm with Aeroplan. I flew to Italy and back with Air Canada a while back and noticed I hadn't gotten my Aeroplan points. I spent an hour online trying to work on this to be told that I hadn't actually taken the trip! Now I'm on hold, four hours plus and waiting. Aeroplan is a piece of garbage as everyone seems to be saying.

We have flown two long haul flights without receiving all points from Aeroplan. Vancouver to Istanbul return and Vancouver to Auckland return. Aeroplan stated not all economy flights are eligible for points even though we paid full price for our tickets. Aeroplan by not rewarding travel points is a cheating passengers. I will not fly any Star Alliance airline in the future.

I’ve been trying to get hold of someone as it seems my card number is linked to someone else’s email now. (I’ve had my card with the same number for 20 years, and use it to collect points). I’m either put on hold for 2 hours then cut off, or told no one is available, try later. I don’t even get the option to have a callback. They need more staff and more lines.

I have been an Aeroplan customer for over 25 years. It used to have value, but the value of a point has diminished so much it is no longer worth even trying to collect them. One example, a family flight to Mexico and back, almost all my 350K points PLUS over $4300 cash....huh? I used to fly to Mexico for 25,000 points, 100,000 for the whole family, and all I paid was the tax. Now I am spending all my points, and paying additional cash that almost matches a full cash fare from a competitor. Time to move on. This program has lost ALL its value and I will be looking elsewhere to build and claim points.

I have attempted with two different cards, over three months, and with 2 different web browsers and e-mails, to sign up for their plan, and I continue to get error messages saying "Oops, something went wrong". In trying to contact them for this issue, it does not come up as a possible option during their many menu options to choose from. PLUS, the online chat help states up front that you don't get to chat with a live person!! So, is it really chat? NO! Seems I will try to never fly Air Canada again, as this is their main plan for flyer miles, and if I can't collect, why use them?

On May 8th, 2022...I purchased 4 cards worth 500.00 each to purchase a gazebo and make a great Father's Day. BUT, it was ruined because the cards were mailed in 4 separate envelopes and one was somebody else's card worth 50.00...meaning the other person got a great deal of 450.00 more to spend! I phoned Aeroplan and they said I had to send pictures to prove it, which I did.
An investigation was done, which I had already waited four weeks to get the card. They finally said okay and will send another...It is July and I still don't have it! I phoned several times and asked that since they screwed it up, it should be mailed overnight...but no. So, the store said they couldn't hold the gazebo anymore and now it is next to impossible to find the one we want and the size...and still waiting for the card, which another was sent and they said it was sent express, which is 2 days and that was over a week now. I am exhausted and very disappointed in the service.

I had bought Air Canada Ticket Vancouver to Mumbai and return back to Vancouver for about $2200, unfortunately, I had to cancel those ones. For cancelation, there was a penalty and charges of about $300 so I was entitled to get $1,900 whereas they were offering 132,509 Aeroplan points, so I bought those points. I am looking at the offers and even Air Canada Tickets for the last 4 months and what I see is that those 132,509 points hardly fetch 60% of the worth of what I invested. It would have been a wise decision if I would have taken a cash refund from Air Canada after paying the penalty etc. then also I would have been in a profit. NOT RECOMMENDABLE AT ALL.

I was a frequent flyer with Aeroplan before COVID. I used to encourage friends and family to use this product. With the changes to Aeroplan and now that COVID restrictions are easing, I am looking at international flights. I have flown locally and noticed the substantially higher points (about 300%) for booking and when I looked at international flights, using different destinations, it's a case where if I fly Business Class for 2 people, (YEG to Athens) for one of the destinations, it went up from 160,000 (sometimes less) points before to now over 500,000 points!! I have more than enough points accumulated but this is ridiculous/robbery!
I definitely will be looking at other rewards options to travel. South Pacific travel has gone up from 300,000 for 2 people for business class to over a million points needed... to give you a couple examples. Heart breaking, disappointing and ridiculous are the 3 words that I come up with after being a loyal customer for well over 20 years.

Over 100k points of mine expired because Aeroplan missed a transaction back in May 2020. I specifically purchased Banana Republic clothing to ensure my points did not expire and can prove that with invoices and bank statements yet Aeroplan says they refuse to look into it because it happened over a year ago. They forgot that it's been a pandemic the last year and people are not allowed to fly hence why I never checked my account, just assumed I received the points and had another 18 months buffer time. Wrong. The supervisor named Tara in MTL said it's likely an issue with Aeroplan's software but there's nothing that can be done now. After 20 years of being a loyal customer this is how they treat me. I'll be selling all my stock and won't give this company another $, I suggest everyone else does the same.

I have been collecting and redeeming points for many years and right now my balance is 523,000 pts. I thought we could use them for some great trips in retirement but now with Covid we are quite reluctant to hop on a plane and go traveling to foreign lands. So I thought maybe we could use some up redeeming for an Amazon e-gift card. Should be pretty simple right. Wrong!
The first time I tried, they said 24 to 72 hrs. to email the e-card. (Anybody else can do it almost instantly) so I waited for 4 days and nada. Sent in a complaint ticket and got a response in a day or two that they would investigate. Waited another day or two and emailed back again to find out where it was at. Was told that my account was flagged for suspicious fraudulent activity. They would expedite this investigation and get back to me shortly. I was also told I needed to update my password which I did. Two days later I followed up and was told the investigation normally takes 7 to 10 days. Finally after a couple of weeks I got the points back but no gift card. What's the point of a rewards card when your only reward is weeks of frustration and hassle!

Every time I called the same answer they gave me: they are still investigating, the vendor did not provide me with the status of my order. They can not refund my AEROPLAN point and they can not re-send my gift card either. They suggest that I will wait indefinitely for the answers. Spoken to 2 supervisors and said the same things.
This is the most frustrating experience that I have dealt with, NO COMPANY had no responsibility for the good and services that they provided for. They even told me it is company policy not to provide any definite answer. Just had a horrible experience with Air Canada/Aeroplan customer service. They were very rude and aggressive and kept repeating their rules about luggage charges. They Claim even that they are owned by Air Canada, they have nothing to do with charges. I called them to discuss and understand the charges and headaches experienced with their partner airlines but they don’t want to help or hear about it. Keep blaming other Airlines. Called the other airlines directly but they blamed on AirCanada because it is AirCanada ticket. They said if the ticket was purchased through them it would have included 2 pieces of luggage on international flights but since the ticket was through Air Canada, they can’t help.
I had to pay well over $1000 for luggage charged by different airlines for only 2 bags plus fees/taxes to Aeroplan, for a ticket I could have bought with cash that would have included bags on international flights. I think this is a horrible system and way of treating loyal customers. In these stressful times not too many people are traveling for fun, usually emergencies etc. The last thing you want to do is deal with rude staff at customer service and airline staff that are gouging you for money for your bags. I think Air Canada/Aeroplan should include luggage charges in the upfront charges at time of purchase and pay other partner airlines or follow the international airlines rules. Almost all economy tickets with international flights include luggage.

First of all, the website is not reliable. I was trying to convert my Aeroplan points into e-Gift Cards in time for the post-Xmas sales. However, all day on December 22nd the e-Store website was down. Then, when I could finally get online December 23rd to make my transaction, I found on December 26th that Aeroplan had cancelled the e-Gift Cards on me, without immediately returning the points. Now, as of December 28th, it will be too late to purchase alternative e-Gift Cards (with the 24-72 hour lag) in time to take advantage of the sales, meaning the price on the items I had in mind will go up. What a waste on something that should be so simple. Plus, all the time and frustration involved!!!

Annually Aeroplan runs this promo but this year's was a real scam that many at Aeroplan admitted they had many issues with. Buy points and get a 110/90/65% bonus of points. I made a purchase of points and received the bonus points expected. However I did not receive the tier level upgrade promised for the promotion because of some "fine print" that wasn't obvious to many! The promo list buy points and receive bonus points and get a "status level" upgrade. It goes on to say take the points bought plus the bonus and divide by 50% and for instance get a 25K status if that formula equals 25,000 points. It then goes on to say or buy 250,000 points and get a one level upgrade to a max level of 75K.
I bought the 250,000 points for $7500 +tax and my current status of 25K was never upgraded to the next level of 35K. I contacted the call center and many reps argued including supervisors argued whether I was entitled to the upgrade or not. In the end they told me that the 250,000 points I purchased plus the bonus I received (225,000) divided by 50% had to equal 250,000 even though the conditions imply that formula applies to all other purchases but if you bought the 250K then you automatically got the one level upgrade. It is also difficult to achieve their explanation given you can only purchase a max of 250K points in one transaction. It was just a scam all around.
I spent $7500 with Aeroplan for the purchase of 250K points and couldn't even get a bump from 25K to 35K status where as someone goes and purchases 60K worth of points for $1500 and with their bonus qualifies for the initial 25K status. There are many other flaws with this promo that were explained by the staff at Aeroplan as well and some others I found during the process but that's another day! AEROPLAN if you're going to run promotions I suggest you should put more effort into a program that leaves customers satisfied instead of pissing them off and becoming disgruntled customers who take their business other places.

I have been building reward points for years now and looking forward to the day to cash them in. In trying to find out how many points I accumulated over many years I discovered that they expire every year. Then I remembered how I struggled years ago to see how your reward system worked but got frustrated by how difficult it was to find a simple answer. Your phones are always busy, I don't have a lot of time to phone back after waiting to speak to someone and then get told to phone back after the call getting disconnected. I wanted answers as to why I lost all my points in every year accept this current one. I never got a notification that I was going to lose all my points by a certain date, it's not what I signed up for?
I've wasted over an hour trying to plead my case unless someone from your loyalty department does the right thing. If I'm not treated right, I will be pushing the company I deal with and others to switch to Air miles or some system that gives you the prize you've earned over the years, a company that you can actually talk to someone in customer service about a grievance like mine, a company that actually is willing to take action and do the right thing, a company that is willing to look at their company policies and change them if they're wrong. I'm a reasonable person but I'm smart enough to know when I'm being given the run around, please prove me wrong, Sincerely Dave. I realize after reading this complaint over that you listen and fight on my behalf not Aeroplan customer service, please deal with them, I shouldn't have to be searching for some justice like this, no one should.

My bad experiences with Aeroplan and AirCanada predate the recent acquisition and are too numerous to enumerate, but missing credits are common, denial of credits as AC says it is Aeroplan's fault and vice versa, failure to respond to credit requests including 2 follow ups, and lack of product in spite of booking well in advance - often reasonable connecting flights are not available, period, are some of the problems. Current issues are missing credits - have tried on-line multiple times and have tried phone (priority number).
In some cases when I have gotten through I get ridiculous reasons for denial such as passenger name not found - when I have AC ticket and boarding pass to the contrary. I was wondering if anyone has considered a class action suit? I think I will go to the BBB. Any other suggestions?

Well, there is nothing good to say about the purchase of Aeroplan by Air Canada to say the least. I have also experienced incompetent service from the "new" Aeroplan staff. I have been a member for over 30 years, I transfer about a million points a year and I can say that I am also cancelling my credit cards that are based on Aeroplan. Their technology is a disaster now, which worked very well for years and years in general for a reward system. I generally fly a few times a month on points and in 10 years never had these types of issues. I'm also a Diamond member which usually has one to a representative in less than 3 minutes with a generally good attitude, yesterday I waited 3 hours, 5 minutes 42 seconds before I was bored of watching the tv and paint dry.
Also, note they have blocked all their star alliance member flights for departure out of Canada, especially the big ones like United, Luf, etc. Not that I am super fond of some of these airlines, but Air Canada has also passed some very outrageous baggage rules recently. As an example, no one can fly with 2 litres of liquids (check what constitutes liquid) in your CHECKED baggage. This means you pretty much cannot fly with a lot of things. So flying Air Canada, forget points redemption is pretty much a waste of time if you like shaving cream, deodorant, perfume and/or shampoo when you travel. Yes I had some of these pulled off a flight recently because i was over 2 litres in their minds. It's absolutely crazy. Expect it to get worse not better.

I don't want a refund of points, I just want my points converted to something useful - cash or flybys. I never wish to use this company again. I have never been able to complete a booking without error, its been 3 years of trying. How does a customer with over 50K miles book a flight when the website crashes and you spend over 2.5 hours on the phone to the contact centre, only for no one to respond! Very disapointing service, makes you question why you are loyal to Air Canada in the first place.

Over the years I have accumulated over 75000 rewards miles. Without really noticing that most places to get rewards have disappeared. Due to this, I didn't accumulate any points in a year and the company discreetly took the points that I had earned away. And here I am about to book a flight and go to use my hard earned points. I have been on hold trying to deal with this issue for 1 hour & 34 minutes... So far... According to the website, you can have your points reinstated for .01$ per mile, +$30, + tax which is well over $750. The cost of the ticket to buy from the airline is $466. Once I deal with this issue I will purely use airmiles. So much waste to accumulate and redeem points. Aeroplan had become a useless service.

I have been an Aeroplan collector for about 10 years; in that time I had used points for flights and collected well over 50,000 points. Recently I had over 25,000 points taken from my account without warning due to a policy change which allowed them to take my points after not using my card for a period of time. I missed the deadline by 1 week. I spoke to a customer service representative who told me that if I could show that I recently used the card I could be reimbursed. When I called back with the proof I was told the person I talked to was wrong and that I could not get my points back. I was then transferred to a manager who was not helpful at all and also told me my points were gone. I used to go out of my way to try to earn aeroplan points and shop at places where aeroplan is used including flying Air Canada. I have recently used my hard earned miles on Aeroplan flying on Air Canada to book a trip from Toronto to Hong Kong. Because of a family emergency while in Hong Kong, I had to postpone my return trip to Toronto. I found out that I could not change my itinerary online or call the local Air Canada office but had to call long distance to the Aeroplan number between 0700 to 1159 hours. I have been calling for the last three days for at least 8 times. Each time I was put on hold for an unbearable length of time listening to repetitive horrible music with no one picking up the phone or a recorded message told me because of the high volume of calls, they could even allow me to go on hold and I had to call back.
The last time I waited was two hours ten minutes and my line was simply cut off in the end. I now have no alternative but to miss my scheduled flight today and book a separate trip home. In my experience with airlines and their associated travel partners, I have never encountered a company or organization that runs a customer service so unfriendly and unhelpful. Aeroplan is probably the best card to get to accumulate miles but you have to use double the miles to get anywhere. When you compare to other companies where there are no blackouts, they are the better choice. I just recently got Aeroplan again because they had a promo and prior to getting it I noticed that the flights were not that difficult but they are back at making it impossible to get a fixed flight at 15,000 miles so you have to bump up to using 40,000 miles to get anywhere in Canada. They had an option whereby you could add a stop at no charge ie recently I stopped off in Lisbon on the way back stateside from London. In a few days, I'm heading to Singapore Via BKK and back the same route. They have now stopped this option. I don't mind as it may not may economic sense for them, I'm not placed to judge.
However, for the last 4 months trying to get through to the call centre is proving impossible. I tried so many times it was unbelievable, most times you weren't able to even hold, sometimes you will get a recording of the CEO telling you "We are experiencing a higher call volume than expected and you may need to wait for up to 50 minutes". I am at present writing this after being on hold for 2 hours.... I know I can use the website and I would if the website could resolve my problem. It can't. HONESTLY!
The staff were always great and the options were excellent especially if you wanted First or business. They have gone from being the best to the worst!! The only logical explanation I can think of (Unless the Management walks around in constant surprise at the World Ie how many people are calling.. You would think they would have a pretty good idea -) is that they want to drive people to their website.. Which FYI has crashed a few times. Do they have too many people with too many miles and cannot actually fulfill the “sold” product? Is that not fraud? Then you go to the website and it’s down for repair? Shame on you! People have lost flights, points, $ and way too much time.
My personal experience: looks like I will have to purchase (with $) a flight that is crucial to a larger voyage. I had enough points to go round trip to get to and from the starting point. I need to book it soon to catch the expensive overseas flights which are already paid for. The Aeroplan website lets me go through the whole system to set up my reward flights, and then (after all the booking, and credit card rigamarole) it looks like it's working, and then the doomed FAILURE window. No options, just keep trying. After dozens of attempts, for over a week, I'm starting to get the hint that this may not work. To say that I am angry and disappointed would be an understatement. This recent Aeroplan telephone 'issue' is Beyond unacceptable as travellers like myself will certainly become stranded worldwide! And unfortunately when you call Air Canada, they claim that they are helpless to intervene even though as of January 2019 Aeroplan became a division of Air Canada. When one calls Aeroplan, a recording immediately comes on apologizing for not taking your call and states that call volume is high and that regrettably you cannot wait on hold!!!! After reading reviews on this site, I realize that I might as well give up on them. I have been a member for 20+ years and unfortunately my miles expired as I missed the 12 month deadline. I read on their site that they send an expiry reminder...but no way. I always check my emails and my junk folder and I have never recalled seeing an expiry update email since they implemented the expiry rules in 2006.
I lost 80,000 in points and my husband lost over 200,000. Separate email addresses and separate accounts and both of us has never seen an expiry email from them. Totally sucks to lose all those points, but clearly this company is not worth any more time spent on them. It seems that they are impossible to get a hold of, even when you have an issue that is time sensitive. And that they have no "leave a message" or call-back feature is outlandish.
Furthermore, the so called value you get from your Aeroplan miles almost now seems like a scam. A specific example: my wife and I are interested in going to Portugal in the spring. Using Aeroplan, we could redeem 144,400 Miles (basic economy) on Air Canada flights, but would still have to pay an additional $1,213 in taxes, fees and surcharges. This seemed ludicrous so we looked at booking the same flights, same dates with Air Canada - and buying the tickets would cost $1,589 (all taxes fees, etc included). So our 144,400 Aeroplan Miles are worth just a measly $376! This is despite info on Aeroplan's site that suggests 1 Mile is worth approximately $0.025. With this exchange noted above each mile is worth about one-quarter of that!

The Aeroplan point collecting organization is a company OUT to get your points. Unlike the other point collecting companies, Aeroplan has a sneaky way to steal your points from you. They have an EXPIRY!!! If you do not collect any points over a one-year period you will forfeit all the points you have ever collected. They stole over 120,000 points from me last year. If you are wondering how I missed their reminders, they conveniently only send one three months before (which will probably end up in your junk mail if you are a busy person).
My mistrust with this company is deeper. I was in communication with one of their employees who offered to help me. I stayed at a hotel within the year but the hotel did not input my points correctly. I provided proof to Aeroplan (receipt of my stay) but they said it was the hotel's fault because the new input date they sent me was outside the expiry date range; so Aeroplan wiped their hands clean and stole my all my points. If you collect you might be waiting for your young children to grow old enough to visit somewhere. Well Aeroplan stole a Disneyland trip from my family with three young girls. Called the customer service number, 1-800-361-5373, and got a message saying they were too busy to take my call and to try back later. No possibility to wait and not even an offer of getting a call back. It's also impossible to send an e-mail or fill out a form requesting help on the website. This is clearly the mark of a company that has no interest in providing any kind of reasonable customer service whatsoever! Aeroplan and its affiliated company, Air Canada, which also has terrible customer service, are two businesses that should be avoided if at all possible.

Updated on 01/12/2020: I have been accumulating Aeroplan miles for many years in hopes of one day travelling some place with them. In December 2019 I tried to use these points since Air Canada (the least preferred airline I want to use) purchased Aeroplan and will change all the rules and devalue my "miles". I called them 4 times in December 2019, each time being left on hold for over 3 hours only to hang up in frustration and try again.
I gave up and paid for the flight I was looking for. When I wanted to make another attempt, I tried using their glitchy, useless web site to book my flights only to find they really and truly rip people off. These "miles" are not actual miles, this is only a term they use to describe that you have points not worth what is construed by the term "miles". In any event, after several hours trying to work out the best of the crappy options, I wanted to book what I came up with only to find that I cannot book this flight as it had "just changed in price". When I went back to reissue the flight, it wasn't changed, it was the same value but now I was unable to click the last button to finalize the trip. I called the Aeroplan number again and yup... I was left on hold for over an hour before I gave up.
Clearly, they have devised a way to frustrate the end user to the point we don't use the miles we have saved up. They messed up their web site so much that it's almost impossible to use. Who knows how few people they have employed to answer phones but I would guess it has to be less than a handfull because it's impossible to get anyone to answer (if the system doesn't hang up on you first. Bottom line: I will do my best to use up all my earned "miles" and cancel the AEROPLAN card, what's the point in having it if it's not worth using?!
Original Review: I called and attempted to connect with Aeroplan via their website. Neither would work. The second day I tried, I was left on hold for over an hour with no answer. I've saved up Aeroplan miles for years. Now that I want to use them, it's impossible. What's worse is that the price went up while trying to contact Aeroplan and Air Canada. Both these companies suck if you ask me.

Then spent over a half hour speaking to an agent, who tried all sorts of changes to enable access. She managed to fix the problem on my wife's account, but not mine. She said that she would pass the file on to someone else, and that I should try to log in after a couple of days. It's now one week later and I still can't log in. I tried calling the call centre, but due to the high call volume, I couldn't even be place in a queue, but was abruptly cut off. I feel totally helpless. Being honest, I called back to tell them about the error. They were quick to correct it and offered no token of appreciation for my taking the trouble to do so (calling back and being put on hold for a long while only to have them deduct points from my account).
A little later I realized they had taken off too many points from my account! This time when I called again I was very unhappy. After finally getting it resolved they offered me 2K points for "any inconvenience caused". By the way, the website is horrible to use for booking redemptions. Very user unfriendly and constantly logging you off for no apparent reason. The Aeroplan program is very poorly run. The customer service staff don't have a clue what it means to provide good service and each one of the staff I dealt with (including a supervisor) made mistakes when dealing with me. This so-called "loyalty" program is a farce! I have been a member of Aeroplan since the '80s and have always chosen Air Canada whenever possible. Last year I went to Italy for a family vacation that I had been saving my points for. I had enough points for a "free" flight and I purchased tickets for the other 3 members of my family. My "free" flight cost me $578 for taxes, fees, etc. The taxes, fees, etc. for the 3 other tickets were approximately $250. Keep in mind that the flights for 3 paid tickets plus 1 Aeroplan points ticket were exactly the same aircraft, time, etc. When I asked the Aeroplan representative why such a variance existed in fees for the exact same flight, I was told that is just the way Air Canada does it and it has nothing to do with Aeroplan. Good way to pass the buck.
Fast forward to present time. I had nearly 29,000 points after my trip to Italy, which Aeroplan just stole because I had no activity on my account for 12 months. Apparently, I received an e-mail - one e-mail is all they send. No other warnings. The Consumer Protection Act bans most retail business gift cards from having an expiry date for most provinces in Canada. Why not the same for Aeroplan points? I, like other reviewers that lost their points, earned points by choosing what airline to use. Air Canada should find another provider for their loyalty program if they want loyalty from the consumer. There are many other choices and the list is growing. I am cutting up my Aeroplan card and will look to other providers for future flights.

Aeroplan is not a loyalty program. The only loyalty is on the part of their members. Member since 1998 and had over 95000 miles expired in May 2019. Didn’t realize until I started booking some flights in July. Appears I was sent an email a month prior to them expiring buried in my junk/promotional mail. Looked up how to have my miles reinstated. Great! I had a hotel stay in April which I received the partner points for which were not yet converted to Aeroplan miles. I believed the hotel account was setup to automatically convert to Aeroplan but it appears it wasn’t occurring. So I converted the points to miles on their system and called Aeroplan and was told there was nothing they could do because it was a conversion and wasn’t completed prior to my expiry date.
Didn’t matter that I could sent them a copy of the invoice from the hotel. Told me I needed to contact Accor to have them post the hotel stay. They don’t care how the miles get in my account as long as they get there prior to my expiry date. Contacted Accor to see if they would be sympathetic to my situation, reverse what I had done online and attempt a manual system transaction to the Aeroplan system but they indicated they could not. Reading these comments has given me some comfort in that I am not alone in my frustration and disappointment. I feel Aeroplan could do a better job in notifying its loyal members when miles are going to expire, especially with such a large number of miles. You could also provide an exception process when there is a system and timing issue such as my case, then I could consider Aeroplan a “loyalty” program.

Being so incredibly immersed, I put a piece of mail aside from Aeroplan, knowing it wasn't a bill and lo and behold, I find out a year later I had lost ALL approx. 63,000 miles because I didn't make one partner purchase in over a year (I had started using PetroCan). If you phone in and ask for reinstatement, they will NOT do it, unless you pay 1 cent per mile.
The way I see it, they allow businesses to use it as a promotion, then dream up a way to cancel the points, then so as to stop people from feeling like they have been totally taken, they offer them back for a price saying... well it's still a bit cheaper than you would pay for a full price ticket... But if you ever do the math, even WITH using your aeroplan points, by the time you pay the tax, you are paying a good deal of money to use up a substantial amount of points so think twice if you want to use the points for a short flight or save them for a really long one... but make sure you don't do what I did and keep making purchases. Well I was dumb enough to buy them, go to use them and they don’t offer any flights to use them and the ones they do offer are inflated miles and long flight durations. Even tried 6 months out, none! This is the worst air miles company period. They need to be investigated!

I used my air miles through Aeroplan to book a room for my daughter and wife this December 2018. My daughter checked in with her mother that has Asthma and they were not in the filthy stinky room for more than 5 minutes and she could not stop coughing. We asked them to see another room that maybe did not smell like cigarettes as it was suppose to be non smoking. They told them no. They tried to go back up to stay but did not even last an hour. They had to go find other accommodations because they were going to sleep in the car. I used almost 160,000 air miles for a one week stay. Booked this through Aeroplan. They now have our money/points for the week long accommodation and will not return it. We were there for 1 hour. The door lock would not work properly. They could not secure the door properly.
While leaving the hotel they encountered two women shooting up in the hallway and cockroaches. They took pictures and video and will be reporting this discrimination and fraud. This ruined our Christmas. All I was trying to do was send my sick wife away for a week. I will be pursuing this matter. Air miles has emailed me back saying there is nothing they can do. This is unacceptable. Why affiliate yourself with such a horrible hotel. To scam people out of their miles? Why else would they do this? You are a large corporation. I am a hard working citizen that deserves my points back. I tried calling over and over to advise you of the situation and now I have had to spend an additional $1500.00 for them to go to another hotel plus use 160,000 air miles for a 1 hour stay.

However due to a sickness in our immediately family we had to postpone our flight to Jan 5th. On the new flight, premium seats are available on Air Canada but not to Aeroplan. We are forced to settle for economy seats but must forfeit the nearly 50% more in hard earned mileage points we used for the original booking which were paid in kind by Aeroplan to Air Canada. No one at Aeroplan will help saying it is out of their hands. Air Canada turns around and says they cannot help as it is an Aeroplan issue. Years ago you could get somewhere with Aeroplan points, and the customer service was great. Number 1, they were actually reachable. I cashed in 50,000 points for a gift card, never received the card, tried logging a complaint on the site without success, and basically realize they just stole my points and did NOTHING about it. Further to that, I fly constantly for business, and the accumulation of points is a mere FRACTION of what it used to be. I hate Aeroplan, and I use the word hate very sparingly. No wonder Air Canada is dropping them. They're useless.

I try to book flights from YYZ to SAN for the holiday season. What I always get year-after-year is little to no availability for departures in December. On top of that if I'm lucky to find a flight the taxes, fees, and inconvenience with multiple connecting flights make it pointless. It costs almost as much as just buying direct flights on dates I want. So my other option is to "Market Fare Flight Rewards". I have 38,000 "miles". I need 41,000 more miles to fly to San Diego. The cost for the cheapest flights turns out to be a mind-blowing $1626 + $124 in taxes which is 2.5x the total cost of the ticket cost without Aeroplan. You can collect Aeroplan for free but what really bothers me is the false marketing as incentive to buy flights with Air Canada or paying outrageous yearly fees on an Aeroplan credit card only to find out your points are pathetic and you basically can't use them towards any travel. False marketing, horrible selection, outrageous costs.

Since it was the first time I was redeeming points, I chose to call an Aeroplan agent to help complete our booking (additional booking fee of $63). The agent was able to see FMFR flights for my preferred travel dates that were not listed as available on the Aeroplan website. I found this strange. We were flying business class and the agent booked us on a return flight (AC845, November 5, 2018) which was not currently listed as FMFR for business class (only economy was offered as a FMFR). The agent was confident that business class would become available on the flight between our booking date (April 2, 2018) and our departure date (November 17, 2018). I trusted her confidence and used my points to travel business class even though our return flight was booked as economy.
I was advised by the agent that our economy tickets would be upgraded to business class when the customer (me) alerted Aeroplan that business class had become available as a FMFR on AC845. The agent suggested checking the Aeroplan website or calling the Contact Centre periodically until I saw that business class was available for AC845.
I called the Contact Centre once a week between April 2, 2018 and November 17th, 2018 to no avail, business class was never made available as a FMFR. I also checked the Aeroplan website periodically but was skeptical that it would ever be listed as I knew that my agent had booked our departing flight without that flight ever having been listed on the website.
In the end, it was a stressful six months wondering if our tickets would ever be upgraded, in the end, Air Canada did upgrade our economy seats to business class, but this only occurred 10 minutes prior to boarding the flight (the deadline for Air Canada to sell business class seats on that flight). When two seats had remained unsold, we were upgraded.

I am outraged how Aeroplan regularly steals points from loyal customers and has a "too bad for you" attitude when you contact them to claim the points YOU EARNED AND COLLECTED. I collected over 100,000 Aeroplan points saving up for a trip. When I went online to redeem them my balance was 0. Called customer service where they told me I lost them because I didn't redeem them. Ya that's the point - I was saving them! They then told me I can buy them back if I pay them over $1000. After spending thousands to earn them I now have to spend a thousand more to keep them. SCAM!!!
I can't believe they get away with this! Their excuse is "we sent you an email and it bounced back" - which is BS! I will never use Aeroplan and will TELL EVERYONE THE SAME! Go with AirMiles/Aventura points or any other reputable points provider. DO NOT TRUST AEROPLAN!! The businesses that are customer focused/customer centric will be the ones that survive the future. Clicked on Aeroplan website where it says ''Use Points to Rent a Car'' and in same box it clearly says ''Choose ANY date and ANY destination''. It also says in Canada, US, and Europe. Well when clicking in this box, it brought me car rentals in Florence Italy airport, both Avis and Budget, but only offered cash purchase - not use your miles!! Called customer service on this who first were equally perturbed, but then came back with a lame excuse that they did not have an agreement with that destination and company for purchase with points. Escalated the situation to supervisor Jeff who agreed to forward the issue to the Aeroplan Division in question for review.
Came back 2 days later with basically same mention and that in the Terms and Conditions section, they covered the issue of availability. No mention of this is made in the clickable box or no asterisk with a mention of ''certain conditions apply''. I find that this was misleading given they were quite able to take a cash purchase but not allow a points purchase, again, contradictory to the promise made above. I stated my firm disappointment to the supervisor and felt that the program let me down and has diminished value. Oh, I forgot to mention, I am a Diamond Aeroplan member for several years now, and a regular member for over 20 years. Aeroplan is without a doubt the single worst rewards program on the planet. Calling it a rewards program is completely inappropriate, because they don’t reward you with anything. I tried for years to redeem my long and hard earned points on flights. Every time I tried to use it for flights, I would get some 36 hour, 4 leg journey from Boston to New York. Should be an hour, not available for anything less than two days. Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. So I never was able to redeem my rewards points for a flight. So I just kept saving them. I’ve been saving them since 1983. A number of years ago they changed their policy, their points expire after one year if you haven’t acquired anymore.
So I tried really hard to remember to go to home hardware and give them my Aeroplan card, just so my points wouldn’t expire. I just went on to finally use the points for some merchandise, only to find that 30 years of points have been deleted, because apparently I missed the 12 month deadline. I called, and as other reviewers have noted, there is “nothing” they can do. Of course there is something they can do. They could give me my points back. But no, if I want my points back I need to pay $999, and they weren’t even worth that much to begin with. What a scam. The only good thing to come of it, is that I will never again feel any pressure to fly Air Canada. Air Canada is the worst airline on the entire human planet. I have never received such abysmal customer service as I do regularly with Air Canada. So now my obligation to fly them has ended. Good riddance.

That should tell you something. I've been a member of Aeroplan for about twenty years and have watched the program go from "quite good" to "a complete waste of time".
Over the years, Aeroplan has done everything possible to make it as difficult as possible for you to redeem your points for travel. The number of points required for a flight keep going up (even as you're searching), the number of "reward" seats available on a flight keeps going down, the "recommended" routes will take you halfway around the world (even though you know there's a direct flight available), the extra fees keep going up (what exactly is a "carrier charge" anyway?), the telephone waiting times are designed to deter you, and now the website search doesn't return any results. The 'deliverable' (mailed letter & attached gift card) does not have the same order/confirmation #s which AEROPLAN provides online (email & a/c) upon placing an order; nor does their front-line help-centre have full/clear access to their non-transparent 'tracking' system. SO... While endeavoring to establish that an ordered gift card has not been received, it has been OVER TWO MONTHS, multiple phone calls with front-line help-centre phone agents' hands tied due to lack of information access.
Our multiple calls get deferred 'by message' to their 'back office' for a supervisor to follow up; with no ability to talk directly with a supervisor, unless the supervisor chooses to call us. Their front-line agents do not record sufficient/adequate 'notes on record' of our past conversation(s)/communications (hence repeating history is necessary = 'very frustrating'). AEROPLAN supervisors (x2 now) have called us to 'look into it'. Yet, there has been no follow up by either, or resolution that OUR ORDER HAS NOT BEEN DELIVERED.
We're out by $250! 33750 POINTS due to their lack of consistent 'tracking' number system, access to full information, and effective/thorough follow-up. TRULY DISAPPOINTING. Today I was trying to book a hotel for an upcoming trip to Toronto using my Aeroplan points, as I've done many times over the past decade. When I searched for available hotels on the Aeroplan site, having specified "Toronto" and "City Centre" (the other choice being "Airport"), the site returned 13 search results. Of those 13 "Toronto hotels", only TWO were actually in Metro Toronto city limits, which is what you expect when you specify "city centre". Three more were in far flung corners of the "Greater Toronto Area" (GTA), five were in other cities at least one hour from the Toronto city centre (assuming perfect traffic flow!) and, finally, yes, THREE were in NEW YORK STATE! Then I saw the announcement that one of the hotel chains I had often booked with has dropped Aeroplan altogether - ouch.
As an Aeroplan member since 2001, I had long ago concluded from bitter experience that using points to book flights was almost always a waste of time - too few seats available and too few flights to choose from. I have a high number of Aeroplan points and was looking to use them for an Air Canada flight from London to Toronto for my daughter and her family. The points themselves were reasonable. However, the taxes and fees etc. added a huge number of points based on a cash figure of $2063.44. I then checked with the airline direct and found that the total cost was $2876.90 including taxes, fees etc. That in itself makes it hardly worthwhile to use points and booking direct would add Aeroplan points rather than using over 400,000. However, my question is why Air Canada indicate taxes etc. at $733 and Aeroplan $2063? They should surely be the same as the definition that Aeroplan use on their website for this part of the cost is "Miles will cover all taxes, fees, charges and carrier surcharges related to a flight reward that are imposed by the airlines, governments or authorities".
Note that there is no mention of fees to Aeroplan. It would be extortionate even if they did, but which 'authorities' are receiving the extra $1330? Surely this is borderline or actually illegal? It appears that Aeroplan are making money under the pretext of it being imposed by bodies external to them. There is absolutely no point in querying this by calling the helpline as, notwithstanding the time taken to get through, there appears to be facility to escalate a complaint to a higher level. The executives of the company hide their contact details and there is no way to email a complaint.

This organization should been fined and put out of business. While I've used my points to travel numerous times over 15 years, the ability to actually find available travel dates (even as far out as 6+ months) has with time, become increasingly impossible with Aeroplan (especially to South America and most Caribbean/Southern destinations).
Website availability calendars will show available dates, however departure and return dates are "purposely" set so far apart that selecting travel for 1 week periods has "by design" been made almost impossible. Selecting "stated" available dates almost always ends up costing a "premium" number of points. Good luck trying to reach customer service as waits are consistently a minimum 30-60 minutes. Customer service is the worst of the worst. My advice to anyone considering applying to become an Aeroplan member is to look elsewhere. I booked a flight last night with Aeroplan to business class from YOW to YVR, only to find out that I could not travel on that date, so I cancelled and called Aeroplan as soon they opened at 07:30 this morning. When I explained what had happened, they said rebooking would cost 100$ and a full refund would cost me 150$ to refund points and dollar portion I paid. I had trust in them for having a honest and fair policy which is not true. Advice for others reading this: call as soon as they open and they answer fast but this mean 04:30 in BC.
While I had new travel dates, I decided to go for a refund as to avoid this again in the future. I told the agent it's better to pay for your flight, this way, it gives you 24 hours to change your mind without fees on any class of fare paid and without the hassle. The agent being rude asked me where did I find a 24 hours, she said when you book, it's final. It cost 100$ to re-book, if more than 22 days from travel, 150$ for refund to reinstate your purchase, if not you have a credit for a year on same class you booked. You need to contact Aeroplan to rebook where this is when they charge you 100$ up to a year. After the year, you forfeit your ticket. You only get one email on this so don't lose it. If you can't find business class, you can book economy but you forfeit half your miles and if it costs more, you pay more.
Availability is very poor and most flights are either too early, too late or with a connecting flight as when you compare on Air Canada site, there are 5 or 6 times more flights there. Seats and flights are very limited. I managed to get YOW to YVR business class one way this time but had to check calendar and choose a date 3 weeks from when I really wanted to travel. I decided to get a refund, paid 150$ plus tax, miles instantly went back in my account. To not take another risk, I decided to redeem for 4 gift cards leaving my balance almost at zero. I have American Express Platinum card which is 499$ a year, I will keep as long as they partner with Fairmont to give me Platinum benefits thereto, it's worth it. If that partnership gets cancelled, then I cancel my card as I will not use any of the other benefits that related to the Aeroplan program except for lounge's access.
I heard Air Canada is leaving Aeroplan by 2020 to start their own program, I can't wait to see what the new program would have in store but I will surely try it. My return flight was booked with Westjet dollars, when I called this morning, no hassle, got credited everything no charge as it's within 24 hours. I hope the new Air Canada points system works similar to the Westjet program. I have been a member since 2001, was great at start but in recent years, the program is failing, same as AirMiles where I stopped accumulating miles, I will do same with Aeroplan. I will not go out of my way to accumulate Aeroplan miles and will only get those from business that only offer them but will book gifts cards instead. MyPlan: when I reach 3500 Aeroplan, I will redeem for a 25$ gift card that I can use.

I have been a member since 1992. Recently I tried to use my miles for a one way ticket from Toronto to SFO. I did not have sufficient miles so I decided to purchase what I needed. When I got done investigating, the amount I had to pay (not including the over 34K miles I had) was more than the cost of a one-way ticket! I decided to fly from Detroit. Then I was told my miles were going to expire. I have never heard that airline miles expire with any other airlines, so I went online to see how I could use them. None of the gift card options were of interest so I donated them to a charity. I have chopped up my card and will not try to use it again. When I went online with Aeroplan to try to contact them electronically, I could not find a way to do that.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Australia in March of 2018. We have booked a cruise and require round trip airfare Toronto to Sydney. We have been saving our points so we can fly business class on this flight. I checked in advance with Aeroplan when we could book this flight, as I wanted to book it as early as possible to get business class seats. It was recommended to me that we book one way travel, that way we could book the outbound flight as early as possible, as these seats could be gone if we waited for the return flight to open up. I was told we could book 350 days in advance.
I checked regularly when the flight would open. On the day the flight opened, I found a flight direct (with a stop in Vancouver) that showed available seats. When I went to book it, it came up and said "due to real time availability the seats were not available". I thought this was because I was too early. I kept trying on that day, nothing. The next morning when I checked the flight did not appear on the search. I then called Aeroplan. They told me there was only one business class flight available. What!!! I proceeded to book one business class flight and one economy. I was later able to upgrade the economy to premium economy (for more points). When I checked the Air Canada site for this flight, there was only one seat taken in business and one in premium economy.
This indicates the Air Canada only ever gave ONE seat to Aeroplan in business class. I spoke with Aeroplan and they confirmed this. When I went to book the one way tickets for the return flight, the same problem. Still checking and the only seats taken in business is our seat. This is totally unacceptable. You save miles for a long time to use them, you go online EARLY and there are no seats. This is not because someone got in before I did, I could accept this, but because Air Canada has not given Aeroplan sufficient seats for 2 people to travel together. Totally unacceptable. This makes we wonder I participate in the Aeroplan reward program, I think I would be better with a different reward program.

They never credit my miles, I always have to call after each trip. Even then when I try to enter missing miles online, it seems that there is always some kind of a problem. Then you call and they make wait for hours on the phone, to finally let you know that you have to send a special email. After sending an email for each flight, they always make sure 1 or 2 are missing in your account. It seems they do everything possible to avoid crediting you, your earn miles, they mainly hope that you will simply forget about that. Aeroplan is simply a rip off company, can't really believe that Air Canada deals with them, what a disgrace.

Aeroplan appears to be intentionally blocking reward seats on 2 Star Alliance partner carriers AVIANCA and COPA with only an explanation that it is an IT problem with no expected date of fixing. Yet researching the web I find that there are other travelers experiencing the same problem and that it is ONLY Aeroplan doing it. Other Star Alliance carriers apparently are not. If they are the reward program of a Star Alliance Carrier (Air Canada) they should, under no circumstances, be allowed to block reward inventory from other Star Alliance carriers. It is part of the reason we give Air Canada our business... Shameful.

I had a large number of Aeroplan miles but did not use my Aeroplan card much. I received an email last April just before I left on vacation that my miles would expire soon. During the vacation I presented the card on at least 4 flights with Air Canada partners and it was accepted without comment so I assumed the points were reset and did not check my account. Only recently when I was checking my account did I realize that they had rejected each of my attempts to deposit the Miles and then deleted the Miles. Only when I called them did they inform me that the Air Canada flights were on a class which did not give Aeroplan miles. There is nothing in the Aeroplan documentation that indicates only some Air Canada (and partner) flights give Miles. Therefore I think I should have been given the benefit of the doubt and had my Aeroplan miles restored but Aeroplan would not even consider that option.

Why do I pay a much higher charge for taxes and fees when I book a flight with my Aeroplan miles than for the same flight booked directly with the airline? For example, a Montreal-Toronto flight booked with Aeroplan costs 7500 points plus $85.22 in taxes, fees and surcharges; same flight booked online with Air Canada directly costs $124. 31, including taxes, fees and charges of $54.31. Is this legal? Does Air Canada not care that so many Canadians complain about this "loyalty" program?

Then I tried on Aeroplan - even using my 55,778 Aeroplan miles (oh AND I am an Aeroplan silver member - whatever that means), the cost of the flight requires me to use ALL of the miles PLUS $1315.59 in cash!!! Aeroplan points are useless. There used to be a time when the program was pretty good. Being a member for 24 years I have watched it erode to the point that the points and status mean nothing anymore, unless the old Super Elite Status, which is almost impossible to obtain now. For about the fourth time this year I have sat down for over an hour trying to get a flight in 11 months from now, this time, from YVR to London looking for Business but Economy only and a layover in Montreal or Toronto. So I move my date of departure up down close to a month, nothing. I change routing, try and find a flight that is direct and save the 6-9 hour layover and hotel.
I am trying to plan a multi-city for two so trying to reduce travel time. Here is an example of the searches I get back: YVR to London 15 hr 20 mins, London to Rome, 2 stops, 9 hr 30 min travel time. Total Duration 23 Hrs 53 mins. I move it from YVR - Frankfurt or Paris or Rome or anywhere to get decent flight as my dates are flexible. So I go on the AC website avoiding Aeroplan and within 3 minutes the first search is a direct flight with one stop over and lots of seats available, total travel time 13 hrs 40 mins only $900.00 more for two tickets. Using points the taxes and fees are outrageous!!! These are old points as I travel a lot but never AC if I can avoid it on international travel these past few years due to this program.
Also the planes are often older and interior in disrepair and the so called loyalty program is useless. If you book through an agent who will try and find you a seat sale they might book on another Star Alliance portal (airline) to book on an AC flight as it is cheaper for some reason when they are looking at times in the hundreds of dollars. That makes sense to anyone even to AC you would think, but guess what, points don't count towards status. You must book with AC and fly on an AC plane or one operated by AC to get qualifying miles on a flight towards perks like lounge access, etc. So you pay more, fly on an older plane to get stale food and a free beer in a lounge also priority check in. If I can figure out how to ever get rid of these points, 360,000 points on a flight or a bunch of gas cards is my next step.
I have now dropped my Aeroplan credit card and picked one with lounge access and baggage perks and next switch to Lufthansa's program. Still Star Alliance and a much better loyalty program, the airline recognizes flights with all star alliance members. Better Loyalty program website and much better planes, well done Aeroplan, you drove me to do some pretty intense research to avoid you after 24 years by trying to force me to pay more to use your airline booking service and by trying to force me to just buy a ticket by making redeeming points. So inconvenient to a loyalty program member.

OK, so here is the deal. I traveled a lot on AC - Super Elite for 10 years. Lots of international travel. Let me give you an idea how I was treated. About 5-6 years into being Super Elite I was late for a flight in Houston. I called the Super Elite phone number (which gets answered immediately) and told them I was going to miss the flight. They ask how late, and I said probably 10 mins. "No problem, you might make it, the flight is late". Well, I got to the gate agent and they were pulling the jet way from the plane. The agent looked up, saw my passport and immediately radioed the pilot. Yes, you are reading this right, they opened up the plane and I boarded. And it goes on, I have punted poor souls off planes because I needed the seat at the last minute and so on. Not proud of this, AC simply allowed it.
Now that I am a mere "mortal" (and my life is far more balanced), I am trying to use the 100's of thousands of Aeroplan miles I have accumulated and it is impossible. When I was Super Elite, this was never a problem. Want to fly biz class to Hawaii last minute? I would log in and choose my flights, pay very little in taxes/fees and off we went. Easy! Fly to Asia and upgrade to biz class, not problem. I would often buy an economy ticket and get upgraded merely by asking when I checked in.
However, now, it is hopeless. The program is clearly geared toward Super Elite flyers, which means you are literally in the air 4-7 months of the year. This is sad. Frankly, I wish Aeroplan would simply "call a spade a spade" and terminate the program for non-frequent flyers as it gives false hope, collects data on purchasing habits without anything in return and sours people on travel. The latter really bothers me because travel is what makes us more human!
In a nutshell, take a deep breath and liquidate your Aeroplan account using "gas cards" or buying a TV you don't need. Then cancel the account. Then, get a "Travel rewards" card from any of the banks. TD has a good program with Expedia. Then you will get 1.5% "cash" back and if you use Expedia For TD to book your travel, you will get a total of 2.5% cash back on the travel you do book through Expedia For TD. Unless you want to travel on business (and it better be worth the sacrifices that come with it) and achieve Super Elite Status, the Aeroplan program is not worth the stress or hassle.

She asked me to send my credit card statement to her and when I sent it it's automatically getting blocked from their end due to security concerns.
I have sent email from different email IDs but none of them worked and when I explained this to her she was mad saying "I am getting emails from all other customers." "Then why I am not receiving your email?" And she said "You first check with your bank if they have charged you or not." As if I was lying. Finally somehow she got the email and she said we will refund my money back within 3 weeks and I did not get any refund, so when I called today they said it's 8 weeks not 3 weeks, so still I have to wait. The website doesn't refresh. Bookings are no longer possible, even after hours of multiple attempts, across three different browsers. Technical Support (option #4) disconnects you rather than talk with you, after 21 and 38 minute waits respectively. Option #1, a real person, when I actually get one, insists on charging fees because I didn't use the website - which doesn't even work. I would like to know why Aeroplan make it impossible to use air miles. I have tried the following: Tried to book an Air Canada vacation with my husband using points. We cannot book separately because we are sharing a room. To transfer miles from one to the other, it costs over $1,000 which is more than the cost of the trip. Tried to use an Air Canada gift voucher to pay. Can't do that as it can only be used on Air Canada flights. Tried to book various trips on points - usually involves several stops and takes 12 plus hours to get somewhere that should take four maximum.
Tried to book a flight to Europe. It requires a huge number of points and then you charge a surcharge of I think about $550, that is higher than booking the flight with Air Transit or West Jet. Tried to use them all up by flying business class to Europe. Your surcharge is about $1200. Why is there a bigger surcharge to fly business class? I am sick and tired of this. I pay an annual fee for credit cards to accumulate miles and then cannot use them or the cost of using them is too high. I will cancel those cards and never fly Air Canada again. I will not let this go and if will take it to any level to ensure people know that their points are worthless.

I have carefully examined the demerits of Aeroplan. It is nothing short of a complete scam. The premise of this card is by using their Visa; you are to collect points to reduce the purchase on flight, hotel, and car rental. In fact, the opposite holds true. You will indeed have to pay more for all three... a lot more! They inflate the costs of the hotel and car rental prices; and then reduce the costs marginally; making it look like they're actually saving the Aeroplan member money. No; not at all. In fact, on their car rentals; you stand to save over $400 dollars, in a week, by seeking out your own deal. Same holds true for the hotel.
On the flights. What an absolute sham. To take a 6-hour trip, it was going to take me a day and a half with a one-day stopover on the opposite side of the continent; in order to make the points work for me. My advice? Take your card and file it under "G". There are a lot of seniors who might get taken for a ride on this. The government should not allow this to happen. Their phone lines are busy forever. So unless you have a spare 2 to 3 hours to get through; then forget it. The person who I eventually spoke to, was an angry female who was sarcastic and adolescent. Stay away!

I usually haven't transferred points from Aventura... Always lots of availability. So, I call Aventura to top up my Aeroplan points. They disappear from Aventura immediately, but take about 4-5 days to show up in Aeroplan. (Why is that in this digital day and age?) So I wait the 4 or 5 days and I sign on again. Le Voila, no availability, or if there is, it's at their 'market value' section which is usually double the normal poor schlep's category. This has happened every year for the last 4 or 5 years, which is why I'm convinced it's a scam. The system sees how many points you have, and determines what it will show you.
If you have enough points for their regular stream, there suddenly is nothing available and so recommends you try their market value stream where you'll have to 'top up' your miles and they make more money. It usually ends in a shouting match between me and some poor Aeroplan person, who of course can't help me. Last year, I ended up just buying a full price flight, which at Christmas, wasn't cheap. This year, I started 3 months early, and there's STILL no availability... 3 months early! What a crappy company. Who runs this business anyway? There should be laws about these scammy reward programs. Air Miles is no better... way fewer service ports and still ridiculous extra charges. And just when I was going to use them, WHAM... they raised the amount needed for a flight. Pr-cks! I'm sick of these reward programs that aren't really reward programs at all, and I'm now on blood pressure medication. But, Merry Christmas to all!!

This makes it virtually impossible to plan a trip during our evening in the western time zone. Aeroplan have shut down every night this week!
It could be moderately acceptable if they were busy adding new flights instead of figuring out new ways to extort the maximum amount of points from Aeroplan customers while flying them with as many layovers as possible that include lengthy connection times. If you then decide to buy into using more points for Business for better timing then you will get the pleasure of flying Economy for the longest legs, and with luck, you might get a Business seat for the final 50 minute flight on a commuter airline that has no business class seating.
