At one time, it was possible to transfer your points painlessly and at no cost to your spouse and children. We had a great flight in Bus Class to Europe in 1995 all on points! Now, along with the taxes and fees the cost to transfer 25,000 points to my wife for a cross continental flight is almost equal to a regularly priced ticket! Why bother with these guys. Over 300,000 points or miles in my account that basically have zero value! Aeroplan is almost irrelevant now.

I have flown with these guy 4 times in the last 8 months and received zero credit in my Aeroplan account. I have always ensured the Aeroplan account number was entered correctly when making the reservation. The account is active as they deleted points that were 12 months old. They are good at doing that on time. Tried to call into their call center but cannot even get into the queue to wait. Message just says they are too busy and call back later. Waste of time trying to use this program. United Airlines MUCH better... Good bye Aeroplan and Air Canada.

It is impossible to ever get in touch with anyone. The point system is an absolute scam. I often wait up to two hours to speak to a representative who is always unhelpful. It is so user unfriendly to book any flights. The taxes on the flights are significantly higher than if I book directly with the airline. It truly is a scam and I often give up on even using my points since it is such an arduous process!!!

Seriously what kind of business in the world puts their customer on hold more than a hour? I'm not even sure if your phone would lasts before you can talk to an agent before this contact centre. Besides the horrible customer service, they came up with a lot of BS regulations and rules so you can suck and penalizes every penny you have through them. This is the first time I ever felt like writing a negative review about any company, simply because Air Canada's Aeroplan customer service was so horrible. First of all, their phone number is not toll free, which itself is unbelievable in today's world. Then, in order to speak with a human being, you have to wait on hold. Well, I waited for 90 minutes and nobody ever came online. As I was calling via Skype from abroad, all those phone expenses were a total waste. Still in utter disbelief that such a big company can have such poor service. Obviously they don't want to talk with their customers. Avoid Aeroplan customer service at all costs...

I wanted to buy a round trip for a friend visiting us from Calgary in July 2016. I went on the Air Canada web site and saw that there were a number of reasonably-timed departures for both ends of the trip and decided (after speaking to my friend) that an 11:30 a.m. flight from Calgary and a 3:25 p.m. return flight from Victoria would work well. The cost was $394 return, all-in. Of course, I could not book directly from the Air Canada site using my Aeroplan points (that would make far too much sense). Instead I had to go to the Aeroplan site and login, then start looking for flights.

To my dismay, the only eligible flights available on the Aeroplan site were ones that either had horrendously early departure times (like 05:25 in the morning - my friend lives at least an hour from the airport) or had very long stopovers (the flight is around 1 hr 45 mins in a Dash 8 or 1 hr 30-ish in a jet, etc., yet the Aeroplan schedule would have a customer flying out of Victoria at 4:00 p.m. and arriving at Calgary at 11:56 p.m.? Ridiculous!). For the privilege of traveling at such odd times (my friend would have to get up at 3:00 a.m. to make the Calgary departure) I was going to be billed 15,000 Aeroplan miles, plus a surcharge of over $150. I think not. Thus, Aeroplan can get stuffed. I booked the flight via the Air Canada website and was able to have my friend travel (with direct flights to boot) at civilized hours of the day without long stopovers. Aeroplan: YOU SUCK!

TD was quick to push the Aeroplan TD Visa so we could get a 30,000 point signing bonus which we were assured was good for a flight to Edmonton where we planned to go this July. I have tried to book a flight from London to Edmonton return with Aeroplan which would cost us all of our points (31,711) PLUS $957.04. The dates we wanted were not available, with 2 stops each way, long stopover times and having to leave Edmonton to come home at 1:00 in the morning. It was all that was offered. I did the same booking with Westjet and Air Canada and both cost around $1076.00 with no points. One stop and we picked the times we wanted. Air Canada and TD should be ashamed to be affiliated with Aeroplan.

I traveled from Edmonton to Toronto on March 03, 2016 with my wife and toddler. I used Aeroplan miles to book the tickets well in advance. When we reached the Air Canada counter, they informed us that Aeroplan never issued a ticket for my wife. I tried to get a hold of Aeroplan but I was put on hold for 50 mins. and I was left with no option but to purchase another ticket at the counter which costed me $517.78 for one way. As soon as I reached Toronto, I tried to give Aeroplan a call again but their office was close. I made my next call on March 21 to finally get a hold of them and the agent opened a ticket for me but did not confirm if I will get my refund back. On April 26, I called again to ask the status of my request and they said someone will get back to me.

A week later, I received a call from Aeroplan Manager, Eric (last names are not provided) who is in Montreal office informing me that the cheque will be issued and mailed to my address within the next couple of weeks. I waited a month but did not receive anything in mail. I called them again on May 31st, and the agent said she does not have any status report available and their supervisor is gone for the day. I called on June 1st to find out that the cheque was issued with a wrong last name and because of that they had to cancel it. I was asked to call again in a couple of days to check the status. I called again on June 3rd and no action was taken till then. Today on June 10 when I called, agent (Jeff) in Vancouver office informed me no action has been taken still since my last request and the Supervisor (Eric from Montreal office) informed him that the person who deals with issuing refund cheques is off today.

It has been over 3 months now and they have still not refunded me $517.78. This is money theft that Aeroplan is doing and no one is there to supervise their actions or monitor their process. I am being kept in dark every time I have called and each call has costed me over an hour wait. I would want to show you the screenshot of the call I made today which was over hour and a half. I would really appreciate if this can be brought to everyone's attention as I am sure I am not the only person going through this struggle.

I am trying to book a flight in business class that is 3 months out. There are two beefs I have: 1) They call a flight business if one leg is in business class. Even if that is just to Edmonton and then on to a European destination. This is not only deceitful but ends up costing the customer much more in points. 2) I have looked to every destination in Europe - London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt - and there are no direct flights. Not in any date I put in. That seems to be a setup in my view.

I am a loyal Aeroplan member who has repeatedly been subjected to extreme rudeness, long customer wait times, often resulting in no resolution or assistance from Aeroplan. I along with a friend booked online for our kid's graduation and realized we made a mistake on the date immediately following the booking. We both got on the phone at the same time. The response time was over an hour and a half, she was able to make a change with her rep, but I was not. Same company, same policies, but different outcomes, even following up with a supervisor, or one who claimed to be one by the name of Russell **, who claimed he was from the Montreal head office. I have a telephone recording of this individual.

It's a shame that Air Canada would allow such tainted individuals to represent or be associated with a national airline. After waiting over two hours to have my call answered, I was extremely upset with their position and the fact they have different rules for different individuals. One was able to change her flight. I was not. ABSOLUTELY NOT RIGHT!!! I am taking this right up with Air Canada. Moreover, when this supervisor, Mr. ** was informed he was being recorded, he either changed his position or simply was nonresponsive and indicated he didn't have to answer my questions. Very good customer service from none other than a supervisor. STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHADY PLACE.

Tried to book flights to Italy on this dreadful Aeroplan website but of course when it came time to click on the BOOK button, nothing happened. When I finally got through to an agent on the phone she tried to charge me an extra $25.00 even after telling me several other people had to phone that day because they had the same problem I did. Then she could not see the flight I was trying to book. We finally booked one way with the help of the agent next to her. By this time I had spent two hours on this. While trying to book a return flight I found out that Aeroplan agents can in fact see lots of flights (eg. through Geneva) that do not show up on the website. MORE AEROPLAN LIES. Using points to pay for taxes and fees cost over 80,000 points. WHAT A RIPOFF.

After two and a half hours I got so frustrated I told the agent to forget trying to book a return flight. So, two one way economy tickets to Italy including tax cost over 140000 aeroplan miles and high blood pressure. WHAT A RIPOFF. I was able to book two return tickets on Westjet for $800.00 in less than a minute. AEROPLAN is the WORST online purchase I have ever made. NEVER AGAIN. They are just PATHETIC and they just don't care. How do they even stay in business? I will use my remaining points to buy gift cards and then cancel my account.

We have been members of Aeroplan for many years. It has always been difficult to book a flight using the Aeroplan program. It has become more and more difficult with the passage of time. We recently dealt with an agent from Aeroplan who gave us a volume of untruthful information and each piece of misinformation ended up costing us money. In an attempt to resolve being lied to we have made several calls to Aeroplan to deal with our particular issue.

To-day's call had us on hold for one hour and fourteen minutes and we were finally told by a very polite and pleasant telephone-voice there was nothing that could be done and that was that. It is apparently impossible to proceed to another level of authority at Aeroplan seeking resolution. It is difficult to understand how an apparently bona-fide corporation can be allowed to operate in this country whilst dealing with customers in this fashion; tell lies, make it a frustrating experience for account holders to attempt resolution of issues, hours of wait times on telephones to no avail, charges, charges and more charges for services not received and HAVE A GOOD DAY.

At one time, I was a proud member of Aeroplan. In the past 15 years, the product and the service has deteriorated. It is now impossible to book flights, even when checking six or more months in advance. It appears that Aeroplan has a scam going. They provide options, but only if you are willing to use double or triple the number of points that you spend. Meanwhile, if you look directly at the Air Canada site, you can see that thousands of seats are available. My advice to Air Canada is that they should dump Aeroplan (I believe that Air Canada owned Aeroplan at one point, but Aeroplan is now owned by Aimia). Aimia has recently announced that you can now pay for taxes and fees using your Aeroplan points. They give you less than one cent per point. At the same time, they will sell points to you at three cents per point. All of this is for your convenience!! Time to dump Aeroplan.

'Aeroplan miles' are not real miles at all. I signed up with this card to get deals on my flights, as advertised. So far, with over 16,000 miles saved, your flight 'deals' end up costing me more money (an extra $60 on a one-way flight) than if I were to just book my own flights on my own, without using my 'Aeroplan miles'. How is this even possible? How do my 16,000 saved miles equate to a more expensive flight? Keep in mind, it is only 1,800 miles to my destination SO their miles system is fake, not based on anything real at all. This is a scam, plain and simple. I will never use this service again and I urge anyone thinking about signing up to NOT do so, immediately.

I was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and closed some bank accounts and credit cards. I had earned and used Aeroplan miles over the years, but most of the time when I tried booking there were always blackout dates, and then I would have to just pay for a flight. I tried booking a flight to recuperate after my surgery and was told that my Aeroplan miles balance was zero. I nearly had a heart attack. This ** cancelled all of my miles because I cancelled my visa card. Not one word was mentioned by the representative about losing my miles! You would think that that would have been something important to advise a customer. I had to send in all of my doctor and hospital letters to prove my diagnoses, but in the end they just said, "Sorry, you should have used your miles more often!" I was livid, and still am. I feel cheated once more, and I am sure someone over there is enjoying my miles. Karma will prevail.

I booked a ticket and misspelled a name. I called the Aeroplan contact number within 3 minutes of booking to correct the error. I was charged $90 for a ticket change. This would not be the case if I were to book a flight any other way. It was explained (in a manner of speaking) to me that this is because it is a "rewards" program. Some reward. No complaints taken over the phone, or by email... You have to write a letter. I have done this before without response. It is almost impossible to book a flight (and certainly not possible at the minimum points required), we must book online, and if you make a typing error... $90. I must say I am glad that I have an Avion card which provides much more flexibility for flying and where service actually exists. (Just checked and it is $25 for a ticket change, and I don't think a misspelled name would be called a change). No use accumulating points on Aeroplan.

I just tried to submit a complaint through the torturous route suggested on the phone by the Aeroplan Contact person: Help Centre/FAQ/Submit a question. You could never find it on your own. And guess what: it did not go through! The network connection was reset (probable cause, busy). Try again later... of course the message was lost. What a scam.

Aeroplan is a loyalty program that actually does not care about its customers. Air Canada should be ashamed of its relationship with Aeroplan and its strategic partnership with them. The actions and unwillingness to help customers has a direct and negative reflection on Air Canada. As a long standing Air Canada member we have NO choice on our loyalty program. Whenever you need to make a change with Aeroplan, everything is about change fees and or the best line is "Sir, it's your responsibility to read our terms and conditions" or "It's not our fault you made a mistake with booking" or the best line of all, "If you're not happy with our program you can chose another loyalty program." Don't take my word for it. Look online over the past 3 years how many customers have logged complaints about Aeroplan and it's fitting they keep getting voted the worst loyalty program.

I personally made an error in booking. I then called back to change the booking and was told I would have to pay $90.00, and my points could only be reused for another booking, and then I need to pay taxes and fee again for booking new flight. How is it fair for a client to have to lose money for an error in booking? BEST OF ALL IS, AIR CANADA DOES NOTHING TO HELP! Beware of dealing with Aeroplan and congratulations to Air Canada for partnering with the worst loyalty program in North America. At the start of this year, my Aeroplan account listed me as AQM for 50,000 miles. But when I received my package in Feb. 2016, it said I was only 35,000 miles. It was exceptionally difficult to get through to Aeroplan. I easily lost a half day of work just trying to get to the bottom of my issue - and still have not. Finally one agent explained to me that AC had changed its rules and that 50% of my miles had to be with AC itself and not with an AC Partner. Clearly, AC/Aeroplan have added rules to Aeroplan that are not known to its customers, and even to seasoned travel agents who have been working in the industry for decades. It took the AP representative a significant amount of time to find this new condition on their website - and I still cannot find it myself.

When I asked the AP representative what my qualifying AQM with AC was for 2015 - after a substantial amount of time - he could not tell me. He suggested I write a letter of complaint to AC. It's now over almost 2 months since I launched a complaint with AC/Aeroplan and besides for 2 letters - which were basically form letters - nothing has been done.

We called Aeroplan to find out why we were not able to complete the transaction and found ourselves "ON HOLD" for HOURS. This is a problem when you have a quarter of a million dollars worth of points sitting in an account for a flight that doesn't exist and no one available to speak to about it. Beware if transferring points over to this account for a trip that may not even exist. I have dealt several times with Aeroplan. I would have preferred to give them a ZERO star, but that option is not available, therefore the 1 star. The only good thing I can say about them is that 3 customer agents out of 10 that I've spoken to this year, were friendly. Average wait time for my call to be answered: 88 mins. If you want to book a direct flight to London for example for the end of the year, you have to use thousands of extra points now with their new system that sometimes forces you away from 'market value' flights. Or risk your life by flying via war-torn countries such as Egypt, Turkey or Warsaw.

What is more, if you are gay and you want to go and see beautiful Cape Town in South Africa for example, you are routed via countries like Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, etc where you can face DEATH or 'rigorous imprisonment for fifteen years.' Egypt for example has the second-highest rate of non-acceptance in the world towards homosexuals. Or even more horrific, Sudan for example: 'Where the penalty of any one offense is death.' SO IF YOU'RE A GAY AEROPLAN MEMBER, WILL YOU RISK DOING A STOP-OVER IN ONE OF THESE HOMOPHOBIC COUNTRIES? How is all Aeroplan members therefore treated equally re flight options and choices?

I called Aeroplan for explanation and after a 1:05 hr wait on hold I did get a representative who although a nice guy could not provide an explanation, but was only able to give me the average price if I wanted to buy 1000 miles from them (C$31). I called for a simple explanation - I thought. I got an email asking me if I was happy with my "recent" points redemption... Since I had no such redemption in memory, except for one ten weeks earlier, I called to make sure that I didn't have redemptions on my account that I wasn't doing. Waited an hour and two minutes then got told it was a redemption I had done in December... early December, two months earlier. Took long enough to do follow up on the redemption that it provides a new definition of "recent" that I am not familiar with. And then they make a guy wait for an hour for an answer. This is not the first time. The record previous to this for waiting for an answer was 42 minutes.

The last complaint I had with them, resulting in a 36 minute wait, was my discovery that the so-called "airport fees and taxes" associated with a ticket obtained using Aeroplan points were higher than any taxes associated with any ticket that could be purchased, by at least a factor of 100%! I checked out the purchase price of the same ticket, same route, same day and same flights with the same seating, and the airport taxes and fuel surcharge for the Aeroplan ticket were twice what the purchased ticket showed - while waiting for an answer from Aeroplan, I even tried better flights, higher cost flights and bookings that cost more i.e. weekends, etc. and not once did I even come close to matching the airport taxes and fuel surcharges that were being charged on the Aeroplan ticket!

In short, someone at Aeroplan is full of bull in the extreme. Those are not airport taxes and fuel surcharges, they are charges collected by Aeroplan and most likely pocketed by Aeroplan. We need regulation on points systems in this country. Nobody should get away with lousy service like this. And further, what they do with those so-called "taxes and surcharges" needs to be followed up because it defies explanation as to why a points redemption is higher. It's high time Aeroplan got their chain shortened big time.

I searched for smart tv's so that couldn't be the case. I had no need for a regular TV. I was trying to replace the regular TV I currently have.

Paul called me a couple days later and requested I send pictures to review to start the process for returning the regular TV. He left this information for me on a voice message. I did. I sent the picture of the box as he requested from my work. As I actually work for TD on the affiliate company team ironically. I am on the TD Aeroplan team. A great team. No one called me back so I called in. A nice representative explained it was being processed and to call back in a couple of days. I did and after waiting an hour to speak to someone while I was explaining my situation the REP cut me off told me she is transferring me to merchandising and then the phone went dead.

I called back. I asked Marie in customer care to transfer me to merchandising. She did where I got Mumta. I had to explain my situation again. She put me a brief hold and then came back to say they have no return policy and there is nothing she can do?! I was flabbergasted by the statement and requested to speak to a supervisor, no one was available and she continued to say they would say the same thing. I demanded to speak to a supervisor or someone that can help me because this entire situation did not make any sense.

This is after I used my hard earned points to purchase an item called in for assistant and then have someone call me a liar, have me jump through hoops to turn around and tell me there is nothing you can do. A Manager was suppose to call me last night after my shift. I received no call. I actually called and no answer. I also mentioned if we do not connect for any reason that I am available to talk 8 am today. Again no call. It is currently after 9 am.

I will keep you informed of the outcome. I've worked in customer service for the last 16 years. Aimia Aeroplan needs to wake up. The same person/people you ignore and dismiss are the same ones securing your company's survival. I will post this story to warn my love ones and friends and fellow points collector of the type of service or lack thereof. It's not fair. We choose you Aeroplan. There is no quality control and no customer service. I can understand how the agents must feel when everyone calling in has complaints like the ones I have read on this site.

Our family has Aeroplan cards and we have been booking AirCanada flights and vacations but with the cards both online and on the telephone. The cards were accepted as valid but my husband's Aeroplan card has a 0 balance. It is active but they don't know why. A supervisor finally came on the line and said, "She has never seen this before". She was supposed to call me this morning from Vancouver. With the time difference she was to call one hour ago but no call. Her name is Sharon. I have spoken to Jay from Toronto I believe and he is arrogant and when I asked to speak to a supervisor, he put me through to web support as he decided I needed to send a credit request. It was sent 2 days ago as I told.him. I am sitting on hold again but I think it was just disconnected after 1 hour. Great service AirCanada. I have been collecting and collecting points for years. I can never seem to use them. I tried to book a flight to New Orleans for a wedding ONE YEAR IN ADVANCE. It was not possible. Well, it was possible, but only through a convoluted circuitous route taking 17-18 hours. The taxes and "fees" alone are more than any other airline. I have tried many times to book something direct, only for it to cost me 40-50% more because there never seems to be availability.

I have several frequent flyer cards. I have flown Delta out of the US and it cost me exactly $0 - no fees, no taxes, just miles. On Aeroplan it is easy to collect points, harder to use them unless you want to pay the equivalent of $10,000 in flights for a blender from their FANTASTIC online shopping catalogue. Once I use up my 138,000 miles (IF it's even possible), I will concentrate on collecting Airmiles. My husband and I have booked twice through his Airmiles points and ZERO with my Aeroplan points. Easier to book. Cheaper to book. Better customer service.

My wife and I are/have booked seats for myself and our two sons, ages 4 and 6, at the time of travel through our Aeroplan rewards program. We booked a seat for myself and one of our sons through their website and we were not charged the UK passenger duty for our son. Since this duty was abolished in May 2015, for kids under 12 everything was in order. They even have it on their website a selection drop down for kids between 2 and 11. However, since we were booking a third seat for another child under a different Aeroplan account and their website doesn't allow for a person to book for a child, we had to call in the third booking.

Apparently all of their reps have no knowledge that this duty doesn't apply to children under the age of 12 and we were charged the duty for our second son. We were told there was nothing that could be done about this and if we wanted to book the seat we had to pay the duty for our 4 year old son. Since we already booked the two seats we booked the third seat. How are their reps allow to charge us for this duty, since it no longer applies to child under 12 and we told them it isn't being charged on their website. We have screenshots of this and anyone can Google this duty to see it is not to be applied to kids under 12.

I started out in 1993 joining Aeroplan and enjoyed it for the first years, holding the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card was able to use the points. I started traveling a lot in 2002 and still do to this day. The rewards program is absolutely useless. Large points for flights and taxes and fees are about 1/2 of a normal ticket anyways. Then there is the routing. WOW!!! The longest durations or the most points ever to get to/from. This past year since December 1st, 2014 to December 1st, 2015 I flew 38 flights for close to 100,000 miles.

Three trips to Europe and back Business Class which equates to my 2016 Tier membership being Silver which is 43000 Aeroplan Points so less than 1/2 points awarded for the actual air miles flown on Star Alliance. Last year I was Elite. This year flew more and due to coding partner rules made a lesser tier. If I was the reader of this I would say it is a waste of time, cancel or don't bother with an Aeroplan Credit Card. Go with a cash Value Card like TD Rewards or Aventura and if at all possible try WestJet for Domestic Flights and International Flights. Join Lufthansa Points Program. Aeroplan started out good but in the last 8-10 years has become a rip off and not worth it.

I am an AC Million Miler AND Super Elite and can't get service issues resolved! Until about a year ago, Aeroplan was no better, nor worse, than most programs. The separation into a for-profit business from Air Canada was the beginning of the rot. But in the past year, they have become, literally, a scamming business. As other reviewers say, they avoid contact, you can rarely speak with people, they have no ability to answer questions, etc, etc. In the past 2 months, they have failed to credit miles on four occasions - still outstanding, blaming the airlines. On one, AC rebooked my wife and I on a Business ticket (after they made us miss a connection in HKG because of 6-hour delay), then claimed the UA flight to SIN we were put on had 'no trace of our travel' - even after sending them the boarding passes!

On a second matter, my daughter, booked on a business class ticket to from HKG to YYZ was not credited, then claiming it was credited to 'another account' but could provide no information. The third was a flight by my wife from GVA to MUC - all on one ticket on round trip by AC from YYZ, claiming (again) that LH had no trace of her traveling. It now seems Standard procedure for them to simply hope you will give up. I will not as it is time for action, and am prepared to take legal action - anyone else interested?

They introduced "market fare" options for more flights, and I didn't think much of it as I was still able to get regular fare flights without too much issue. I can see now it was essentially a complex system implemented just to drastically increase the points cost for flights. Now, even looking a year in advance at flights to LA or Vancouver, the 50K level (normal) is unavailable for any direct flights, however for 150K-250K+ miles several direct flights are available. It should be illegal to have customers collect points with their purchases (which they make lots of money on) only to so drastically devalue them. Where is consumer protection on this?

Finally get the person to read about my last call and they suggest I wait another week and they will call me. Wait another week, no call. Call in, 30 minutes on hold, get told the same thing, argue with them to read the notes on my file. Finally they do and say "it's with the back office".

In the meantime, they have admitted they only have one serial number allocated to me and thus they know they only shipped me one. They just aren't sure why. This is 100% an internal problem and the easy fix is allocate and ship me another, or let me cancel the order, but they don't get this. Call again and ask to cancel - sure, I'll get a email in a couple days to start this process again. Fair enough. No email, call again and the latest guy (post big hold time) won't even read my file - keeps telling me it takes a couple weeks to arrive and running various scripts at me. Finally break through and he bothers to take my Aeroplan number and with some coaxing comes to grips with 80% of my situation, tells me it's "with the back office" and he'll get back to me in a couple days. And as an FYI, I did get through to Aeroplan, 1 hour and 53 minutes after being on hold, only to be told by the kind young lady at the other end (who seemingly read from a script), that the cause for the extended period of being left on hold was due to "system upgrades that had been performed resulting in longer than average wait times". This is how Aeroplan operates. If they keep you on hold long enough, they hope you will simply go away.

And my call this time was to simply obtain / claim for mileage credits for flights taken over the past year... which I have done online several times already, for the same flights... and no one can tell me why the credits are not being applied to my Aeroplan account. EVERY TIME I CALL Aeroplan, my wait time is between 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours. As a computer scientist, I can certainly identify that this was a problem with the website, particularly with the way it handles browser cookies. A good quality website would not have this kind of bug. They told us that if we had identified the error in the month right away, something could have been done. But judging by the way they handled the first error with "there is nothing we can do", we highly doubt that they would own up to the computer error. Called Aeroplan and the woman started talking over me and telling me it was impossible that I'd been told that as they had no new staff. I said it had happened so I now had used over 20k points and was not happy about it. She started saying I could never book that flight as it only covered 15k. I started to say I chose that flight as it was more convenient and didn't restrict myself to the 15k as I had been told it wasn't eligible for the free flight. She started arguing with me again not listening and I asked her to please stop and hear my story and then she could argue with me.

I thought of what I was facing...changing dates and times. The knowing I'd need to get Air Canada to change the flight I paid for. Knowing that would be fight round two either inevitable change fees...so I gave up. Just what they hope for. This is supposed to be a loyalty program and premium credit card. What was I thinking? Aeroplan provides anti-customer service and TD gets tarnished along the way...colour me disgusted and worn out.

Unfortunately, I was not aware of the policy and did not receive any of their emails notifying me that my points were soon to be expired. Did not give me an option to reinstate. Their policy is flawed, I do not wished to be a part of their loyalty program. This is not how you keep your customers. They should be allow to reinstate the points up to certain time frame, not just cut them off. After spending 10s of thousands of dollars to collect the points all my money and effort wasted.

If I have asked my brother to put a Starbucks card in a bottle and leave to the ocean from Turkey definitely it will arrive Canada faster than this. It is a waste of time.

On Aeroplan site, same ticket will cost me 75K Aeroplan + Total airport taxes, fees and surcharges (CAD)$671.75.

Here is the breakdown: Germany Airport Security Charge $20.60, Germany International Passenger Service Charge $55.60, Russia Terminal Use Charge International $21.90, Carrier Surcharge $440.00, Nav Canada - Air Navigation Services $30.00, Canada Domestic/International Airport Improvement Fee $25.00, Canada Goods And Service Tax $1.25, Canada Quebec Sales Tax $2.49, Canada Domestic/International Air Travel Security Charge $25.91, France Domestic & International Airport Tax $17.80, France International Passenger Service Charge $23.10, Russia International Security Charge $8.10, Total per passenger $671.75. Wow! For the second year Aeroplan charge so much! Use to be around $150 for economy (depending on connections) and $400 for Business. I have to say this is very disappointing. I recently booked a flight from Ottawa to the UK using Aeroplan points. Boy was I disappointed. My only other time doing this was about 10 years ago and was quite pleased - they charged me $150 to book return flights to Costa Rica and I had the choice of many flights to take. This time was completely different. I had enough for 1 and 1/2 flights. The full return flight ended up being more than 1/2 the cost of the fare - and, because my partner was flying with me there was only one choice left which meant, we couldn't fly into Leeds - we had to fly to Manchester instead and we had to change planes in Frankfurt! Unbelievable.

When I asked if I could just book a one way trip using the rest of my points it was even worse cause booking one way using points and one way paying cash would have been more than the cost of booking a return fare! And the return flight was awful - one night layover in the US. They suggest that I try and get a one way fare using Expedia cause they might charge less than Air Canada. Unbelievable times 2.

When I asked how come it was so much to fly using points the salesperson explained that it was to cover taxes and the fuel surcharge. Fuel surcharge at a time when oil prices are dropping like a stone - as I type it's less than $41 a barrel! Clearly fuel surcharge really means the price we pay to fly using points. I am now getting rid of Aeroplan.

I have collected quite a few Aeroplan miles through Air Canada and my TD Visa card. I was looking at trips to Europe and was shocked to find out I would have to pay about $850 to Aeroplan in taxes and surcharges. I looked on Air Canada to see what the taxes should be and found out that Aeroplan charges double for tax and then they add on a $400 surcharge. I found a return flight with Iceland Air for $763 with everything included. It was cheaper to pay for the full ticket than to use Aeroplan.

Needless to say I am going to cancel my TD Visa card as I have to pay $100 a year for the "privilege" to collect Aeroplan. This business practice that Aeroplan is conducting is a scam. It should be illegal to rip consumers off like this. TD Visa should also be ashamed to be affiliated with a company like this. I am not surprised that Air Canada still uses them as their reward partner because airlines do not grasp the concept of customer service.

Recently I wanted to use my upgrades - that I EARNED - to travel business class to Paris from Vancouver on a business trip. With the new surcharges on upgrades, it would have cost within $100 of the REGULAR BUSINESS CLASS fare to take a chance on getting the upgrade. What gives? I was outraged. I have changed all my Aeroplan earning options (credit card, etc.) to get AVION points. I still fly Air Canada and Star Alliance when I have to, but I am investigating moving to the Lufthansa loyalty program and booking on Lufthansa flights as an option, as they are much better to their regular customers. Air Canada will sell me a ticket there but when I try to book the flight using aeroplan points I am told that I can only fly as far as Vancouver then have to purchase another ticket ($350) to get from Vancouver to Comox. They say that Air Canada does not fly to Comox but the Air Canada logo is on the tail of the partner airline that flies to Comox and Air Canada will sell me a regular economy air fare ticket from Toronto to Comox. What gives!!

Example 2: In Feb 2013 I wanted to fly to Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Air Canada has a direct flight from Toronto to Puerto Vallarta but I was not allowed to book that flight! If I wanted to purchase the flight using Aeroplan points I had to fly from Toronto to Washington to Dallas to Puerto Vallarta. I was well over 30 hours in transit when the direct flight (that I was not allowed to book) takes approx 4.5 hours. (I am a diabetic and had to stay overnight in the Dallas airport and there were no restaurants open - it is dangerous for a diabetic not to eat.)

Example 3: In September 2014 I used 120,000 points to fly us from Toronto to London England. The fees and taxes that were charged were outrageous! I could have purchased the two tickets in Toronto w/o using points for a mere $200 more than the fees and taxes! In fact, I could have flown from Buffalo NY for less than than fees and taxes charged. The Aeroplan points program is absolutely worthless. I have stopped saving aeroplan points, cancelled my TD Aeroplan credit card, and will avoid Air Canada wherever there is an alternate airline to choose from. I have shared my Air Canada/Aeroplan experiences with friends and they agree that Air Canada and Aeroplan are being unethical. My local TD bank tried to sign me up for a TD Aeroplan card and I told the bank staff why I feel that Aeroplan is worthless and one of the tellers later told me that she had received similar comments from other customers. Rather than booking the flights in my account, which would have cost nothing extra, 120,000 miles was transferred to her account and the tickets booked. On the transfer I saw two items, one for $2,400, which I presumed from the description was the value of the transaction and another for about $300 in tax. Although I did not understand why I was paying the tax on something I already owned, and I believed I was only paying the tax, I authorized the credit card payment.

It was a total surprise to discover that $2,700 was charged to my credit card and 120,000 miles deducted. The cost of the flights, if bought directly from the same airline, were less than $2,400. I enrolled to Aeroplan when I moved to Canada several years ago. Of course, my miles expired the first year and when I finally figured out the rules, about 200,000 were gone. Like everybody else, I think they should have notified me that my miles will expire (although the rule for miles expiring is ridiculous). My miles expired only because I was not using my Aeroplan number when booking tickets, which nobody told me I should do. Anyway, I learned the hard way and continued flying and hoping that I will earn enough to qualify for Altitude status. Finally I did, but they keep changing rules about how much qualifying miles you need to have so I always end in the lower tier than I was expecting to be.

Of course, now you need to have much more than before and this keeps changing with even higher requirements for the 2015. To qualify I even paid more for economy ticket just so my miles count towards the status. It appears that was stupid because they so much increased the required miles that even that will not help me. I will now search for another frequent flier program. I am sure I would qualify for many other programs as well. I am very disappointed with Aeroplan. My husband and I have been loyal members the Aeroplan program since its inception. We accumulated in his account about 350,000 miles (180,000 remaining) and about 200,000 in my account over that time. We were redeeming the miles with less accumulation in the past 5 years as we have retired. I am making this attempt to reach someone who demonstrates care, appropriate timelines for work completion, and reasonable proposals to customers. On Friday September 12th, my son and his family of two children (infant and 3 year old) were to fly form New Zealand to Canada end point being New Brunswick, Canada for a month long visit. The infant became seriously ill which delayed the entire family who now had to plan to travel in two contingents (Dad and 3 Year old) and Mom and infant once the doctor declared the infant safe to travel. Costs have well exceeded $11,000 now some of which will be reimbursed by their health insurance. Aeroplan miles that were lost (88,500) are not reimbursable.

However, the last segment of the trip from Toronto to New Brunswick was to occur through our Aeroplan points. We spent 75,000 points, plus taxes originally, then spent about 450.00 in change fees due to 2 sets of changes. Finally we had to forfeit a segment of the trip due to a lag of 8 hours in a request for ticketing from the booking agent to the attempted ticketing at which point we were called to be told the seat we had booked 8 hours earlier was no longer available. To further anger me, the seat I could have purchased from Air Canada for a total of 220.00 as I was booking the Aeroplan seat, was now unavailable and I would have to pay 800 plus dollars for any available seat.

After further speaking to the agent, I could book a seat through Aeroplan for 48,000 additional points but since I now had only 32,000 points I needed to buy the additional points for almost 400.00! Further I was told that I could not switch payment for the seat with Aeroplan miles from my husband’s account though he was beside me making the booking. I asked to speak to a supervisor who came on and tried to find a solution that was less expensive. She did eventually find a one way non-direct flight with a 4 hour stopover which I could pay for with 29,000 points. With a baby still not in good shape and after a 28 hour voyage, I could not ask the young mother to do that. My solution was to spend a further 48,000 Aeroplan points for a direct flight that I found and booked online through the site... more taxes etc. plus again forfeiting Aeroplan miles as since my daughter in law lives in New Zealand and can only return to Canada every 3 years or so - so the unused tickets (2) that sit in her name are useless to us as they need to be used in one year and would cost us another 180.00 in change fees.

This is written to tell you why we have given up on the plan. We had already determined that Aeroplan was no longer a good value for us due to the difficulty of accessing flights that were possible for us as two seniors. This past experience dealing with the many changes required to accommodate serious illness, the ticketing agent's delay, uncertainty and time constraints further solidified our decision. I spent 30.00 in long distance phone charges, 5-6 hours on the phone. What was once a good deal for us has become a useless asset. You, as a business person, need to understand the experiences that I and many others of our acquaintance are recounting as the impact on your investors of the recurrent Aeroplan problems and unreasonable rules and costs is causing many more customers that use to relinquish our Aeroplan credit cards.

I recently had another experience with Aeroplan and Esso/Exxon of which Esso satisfied my problem with a small rebate. I am suggesting using any airline but AIR CANADA and do not take part in their programs ie Aeroplan. I have all the documentation that was originally sent to me that I will use in my next steps to justify my mistreatment. My intention is to spread the word about this apparent hoax. Bottom line is I am out 25,000 aeroplan miles and basically told to suck rocks.

I had to fly from Seoul, Korea to Saint John, N.B. during that terrible ice storm in December. Several flights were delayed or cancelled, which was understandable given the circumstances. When I finally did get on a flight from Toronto to New Brunswick (after nearly a full day of waiting), it was just bare. I was the last person on standby to get through, and the Air Canada agent told me I had to "rush" if I wanted to catch the plane. And so I did, and only later did I realize that I didn't get credited with my Aeroplan points for that leg, since I wasn't supposed to be on that flight in the first place.

Well, for the last five months, I have been trying to get those points, to no avail. I have followed all procedures, contacted Aeroplan several times, sent copies of my ticket and boarding pass - everything. Only once was I ever contacted by a real person, and when I informed that person (quite politely) of what had happened and again sent all my information, they simply never replied again. I've been using Aeroplan for years and have never seen the service this bad before. This is not the first time miles have not been credited, but I had never had a problem getting them back until this. Sad to think what happens when a carrier has a virtual monopoly on national service...

I have been an Aeroplan member for 15 years. Over the years, I have had a few flights on points, most of which I have obtained through my Aeroplan Visa card. The flight selection has never been great, but I was usually able to get something that worked with my schedule. However, in the last two years, Aeroplan has deteriorated quite significantly. I tried on three separate occasions to book a flight from Fredericton to Toronto. This is usually a direct flight that takes about 2 hours. On each occasion Aeroplan had no direct flights available. The options given to me were ridiculous (e.g., Flights to Ottawa or Montreal and an overnight stay bringing me in to Toronto the next day). I have had it with Aeroplan. I have cancelled my Aeroplan Visa card and switched to a card that has no annual fee. In my opinion Aeroplan is a scam and I would advise anyone who has an Aeroplan credit card to cancel it. You are paying a big annual fee for nothing since you won't be able to use all those points that you are accumulating.

This is to inform those traveling out of country (Canada, in my case), on Aeroplan points, that getting hold of these people, once abroad, to make changes to your half used flight, (sorry, you can't do that on the web site) can be next to impossible. The country I'm in is Thailand. No 1-800 calls, no operator so no collect calls (does Aeroplan accept collect calls?) and no calling cards. Of course this is out of Aeroplan's control so they just drop the ball at this point. You now dial the 1-514-395-0300 number and wait and wait and wait while the time on your phone drains away at 33 cents/min. They offer the "call you back at your number option" and then tell you it's an invalid number.

If and when you are able to make the changes, you must call back again to confirm that it actually happened. Here we go again. In conclusion: 1) Unacceptable call center wait times; 2) No call provisions for travelers in 2nd and 3rd world countries; 3) No provision to make ticket changes on website once ticket is started; 4) No number or place to leave feedback on their website.

Aeroplan wiped out all my points because I supposedly had no activity in the last calendar year. This was shocking to me because I had two flights in December, two flights in March, and a retail transaction in the summer. I was told by a customer service rep at Aeroplan that sometimes transactions don't register (Sometimes!) and that it is up to the customer to verify that all transactions have gone through. On top of that, there is a very narrow window of 6 months in which to notify Aeroplan. From my perspective, this means that I cannot put my faith in the links between Aeroplan and Air Canada's booking system.

I sent an e-mail of complaint to Aeroplan and got a generic response back from the Manager of Customer Solutions, which did not address the specifics of my complaint. To add insult to injury, the letter says that I have 7 years to buy back air miles that should never have been cancelled in the first place, at a cost of $30 plus 1 cent per mile. Can't beat THAT kind of customer solution. I am feeling the love even now. I have decided to park my loyalty elsewhere... I have already booked with WestJet.

All my travel on AC in the past 2 years has been international... London, Frankfurt, Sydney Aus... sorry sir! When TD bought some Aeroplan accounts, I was hoping that mine was one of them but it was not to be. The only reason I stay with Aeroplan is the ability to accrue double points by using my Visa and Aeroplan card at certain grocery stores, gas stations, hotels, etc. There are other better cards but you must use your credit to get any points at all. I have managed to get quite a few points in the last few years and use them mostly for travel between Vancouver and Toronto. I find that I have to be flexible with my dates & book early enough (at least 3 months I find) to get direct flights at the base miles rate.

This whole new "market fare" business is BS and does not cost less points as advertised. I see no difference and think points asked for are way too much in any case. The way they have the system set up makes no sense, especially having to pay fees and taxes on rewards. How is it free then? I looked up a ticket for Toronto to Cancun return and Toronto to Vancouver return, for the exact same dates. The flight to Cancun was almost $200 cheaper yet 40,000 and Vancouver is 25,000 points. I used my points for Vancouver and will pay for Cancun. This is normally what I end up doing as the fares for inter-Canadian travel are ludicrous. Since my family is in Vancouver and we visit a couple of times per year, it's the only reason I give Aeroplan any stars. I have been able to use my points for flights with them if booked in advance enough.

As for cruise bookings, I see there is a complaint that Aeroplan gift certificates didn't come soon enough so a person lost their money and canceled their cruise. He says he also lost his wife's cruise's money and points. This I find difficult to believe. We are using Aeroplan for a cruise to Alaska and our agent made it very clear that if the gift cards don't arrive in time (and that they are normally quite slow) that we can pay for the cruise, submit the gift cards and be reimbursed. Also, this is what travel insurance is for. If you cancelled your cruise for any reason, such as inability to pay for the cruise (if you are only using 50,000 Aeroplan miles towards it, that's less than $500 so I am surprised that would cause you to cancel and not just pay it or charge it and get refunded), your wife's travel insurance would have covered her. It covers if the person they are supposed to travel with cancels and even will pay single passenger surcharges if they still plan to go alone. Therefore, while I understand Aeroplan is frustrating, I do travel a lot and find that cancelling one's cruise over 50,000 points, losing your wife's 42,000 points, all airfare, deposits, etc., is a gross exaggeration.

Even worse than Aeroplan is Aventura, of which I am a member as well. I plan to convert all my Aventura points to Aeroplan though.

As a member for the past 3 years, I believe that Groupe Aeroplan is perhaps one of the worst rewards program in North America. Last year, Groupe Aeroplan Inc. recently changed their terms/conditions that requires all members to have at least one activity within the 12 month period. Should no activity be present, Groupe Aeroplan will have the right to remove all the points in your account without any warning.

Though Groupe Aeroplan decision to remove all the points from members is understandable, the company's policy statement to charge Aeroplan members a fee of "$30 plus $0.01 per mile" to reinstate and re-credit your account is illegal and morally unjust. For example, I had 30,000+ points in my account and did not have activity within the 12 months period of my Aeroplan membership. Aeroplan offered me to pay the company $350 in total to have my account reinstated. To pay such a high fee to Groupe Aeroplan is obviously illegal and violates customers appreciation towards a rewards program that is suppose to reward its members.

Aeroplan should have no right to take miles away from customers who had paid for those miles. Aeroplan continued practice of this new rule has made several members upset and furious. For those who plan to join Aeroplan, please be sure to read their terms/conditions very carefully. I am sure that Aeroplan is well aware of this frequent complaint. Aeroplan must remove the $0.01 per mile charge fee for reinstatement. For members to pay such a huge fee due to inactivity is unjust and unfair.

I tried to book an economy class flight to Toronto for Oct. 24 on my Aeroplan points. but was told no seats were available in economy. I wanted to, however, I could book on that date in Premium Economy. Premium Economy, according to the promotional material I had received, was a new class midway between Business and Regular Economy with all sorts of very attractive perks: priority check in, boarding, more room, etc. It cost a lot more points, 36,000 rather than 15,000, but I am elderly and arthritic and I thought it worth the extra points.

When my ticket confirmation arrived, it just read "Economy," but I thought this was just some sort of glitch that could be straightened out at the airport. When I got there, however, I was told that there was no premium economy service between Winnipeg and Toronto, and that I had paid over twice the normal amount for an ordinary economy seat. It had cost me this much because through it I had been given a seat on the day I requested. I am retired and could easily have changed the date of my flight had I known. I found out in Toronto that there are no in premium economy class seats on domestic flights and only a few on international. (I am going to Venice in May, but there won't be any premium economy for that destination).

I tried to contact Aeroplan by email, then phoned Customer Service. The implication, after I had spoken both to the agent and his supervisor, was that the mistake was mine. I ought to have known what the "Classic Flight" designation on my ticket meant. I am neither senile nor stupid and I think the promotional information about Premium Economy is willfully misleading, legal but unethical. I feel very angry and like the victim of a a practice that comes close to fraud. I was offered no compensation for my wasted points, only that someone from head office will phone me during business hours sometime within five business days. I have no confidence that this will be anything but a waste of time. I was also told at the airport (where I was very politely, even kindly, treated by an Air Canada attendant) that Aeroplan and Air Canada are no longer affiliated. This being so, why then may I only use my points on Air Canada or Star Alliance?

Now during last year when I sold my business, there was a lot of turmoil and activity going on and I had forgotten to use my Aeroplan account within the 1-year frame period. Usually this is not a problem as Aeroplan normally sends me an email warning to use my Aeroplan acct within a certain time frame. But because the email went to my business email address and I had already sold my business, I never got the notice.

So Aeroplan terminated and cancelled my 60,000 points that I had collected and spent an enormous amount spending to get. I had phoned to complained to them that I never got the notice but it all fell on deaf ears. I thought this is grossly unfair as they had already been paid by the companies that used their point system so they should re-issue me those points. They replied NO and that there was nothing they could do about it. I feel greatly cheated and have vowed never ever to patronize businesses using Aeroplan points again.

This is an inconvenience for anyone, especially when I'm registered as a frequent flyer and my account number is on my ticket. Once I've paid and the dates are expired for the trip, why shouldn't I get my points automatically? When I buy from other stores, I'm not required to prove the use of them before getting my mileage points. This is ** from the get-go. If you're making things difficult for no logical reason, I'll move my business elsewhere and will inform all my traveling friends of the problems with it.

To start with, we had to book with an agent as the Aeroplan site explanation about booking made little sense. Then we wanted to change our reservation but could not because although seats were available, Aeroplan will not be buying them from Air Canada, so then, why am I collecting these points? To add insult to injury, the cost to cancel the flipping tickets is more than the refund I am getting back for the service charges for booking! Ack! I will be letting all the places I shop, because of Aeroplan, specifically know I will no longer be shopping there because of this.

Nothing happened. That’s the problem. Any flight you try to book takes 12 to 14 hours with 2 or 3 stopovers and either does not have a return flight or a departure flight in 1 or 2 week spans. When you talk to them on the phone, again nothing happens. They just say, “I’m sorry, sir.” This is not a loyalty rewards program; it’s a joke. I’ve been a member since 1991 and in the program went from great to horrible. I will drop my Aeroplan miles and go to TD Cash Rewards certificates. It’s good anywhere.

Who knows where Jenny is. Probably on the moon. I had no luck at trying to book a flight using Aeroplan points. Each time I hit "book," it came back with a completely different flight to those selected. I spoke to an Aeroplan agent who assured me there was space and said I should speak with a webmaster. What a joke. After an endless wait, I got Jenny who knew less about their website than I did--she couldn't even find the filter for non-stop or one-stop flights and wanted me to change my security settings.

I spent over 10 minutes, trying to guide her through the Aeroplan webpage. All the while, she talked over me and kept telling me she couldn't find the various flights which I had up on my screen. After spending a total of 3 hours between the web, the Aeroplan agent, and Jenny the Mastermind, I gave up and resolved to dump my Aeroplan cards. I've written to presidents and VPs of both Air Canada and Aeroplan, but if past experience is an indication, I'll never hear a word. I'm not sure Jenny even knows what a computer is.

But if we waited long that we lost our Toronto - Sao Paulo flight. Air Canada simply said that was our problem and that we would have to pay for the Ottawa - Toronto flight once it was added.

I tried to claim the reward from points. There's a Sennheiser wireless headphones redeemed for 14,000 miles. I placed order on Jan. 5, 2011. Then about 2 weeks after, the item arrived, but it was an Adidas Ear, which was worth about $9.99 at electronic stores. I called Aeroplan immediately and followed their return merchandise procedures. I returned the wrong item on the same day.

It was confirmed by Purolator that Aeroplan received the returned item. Until today, Feb. 25, 2011 (almost 2 months after the order), I still haven't gotten the right item back. I called them every week since then; their answer was always the same--"We are processing your case and will send the item to you when it is ready." I asked why I need to wait for so long, and they said they have no idea and it's just waiting for the item. If they do not have the item, they should not post and show that they have a lot of merchandises for redemption.

I am very upset that Aeroplan treats the client this way, and I found they are so dishonest. Also, the support line takes forever to get some answer. I was listening to the same music for about 20 minutes every time I call.

I was planning a trip from St Johns, NL to Toronto. The last time I had checked my Aeroplan account, I had 35,000 air miles. I went into to my account to make reservations and to my surprise, I had 0 air miles. I called Aeroplan customer service and spoke with an attendant. I did not get any satisfaction so I asked to speak to a supervisor. I did not get her name. I asked for an explanation and she told me that my miles had expired due to "account inactivity." She said that I was notified by email. I can't remember ever seeing this reminder. I told the supervisor this and she said, "Our policy states that we can cancel your air miles without notification." She said that I could get the air miles back for a $30.00 fee plus one cent for each air mile. I did not feel that this was appropriate as it felt like I was buying back something I already owned.

My card was issued by Home Hardware so I told her, "If I went back to the store and got a proof of purchase in the last 12 months, would you reinstate my air miles?" She said that they could not do that. She said that if I could prove that I had flown with Air Canada in the last six months, they could reissue my air miles. I said that I bought an Air Canada ticket for my wife five months ago. She said that the ticket had to be in my name. I said that we both use the same card. She said it doesn't matter; the Aeroplan contracts are only issued to individuals and can't be issued as a joint account.

I asked her if Aeroplan get any complaints regarding miles being cancelled. She said, "Not really." I said that I was very upset about the way things turned out. I was very disappointed with Aeroplan and that I would be going to the media. She did not seem to be concerned and wished me a good day before hanging up.

Subject : Why our itinerary were changed during our trip without getting our agreement and confirmation?

We booked 3 round-trip tickets (HKG-KIX) by Aeroplan reward plan. We departed from HKG to Osaka (KIX) on 1 Oct 2010, and 10 Oct 2010 flied from Osaka to HKG.

However, on 10 Oct 2010 11:30am, when we check-in at KIX airport, the ground-agents told us our tickets are invalid and we cannot fly unless we buy new tickets! With their limited English standard, we told them it is nonsense and kept urging them to help us check the reason and details. They said that they were unable to contact Aeroplan center since the Aeroplan office was closed on Saturday! After hours, they finally discovered that our tickets schedule were changed on 6th Oct 2010 by Aeroplan, that's why they cannot search our record based on our original reservation itinerary.

At 13:00, they immediately issued temporarily e-tickets for us and the airplane was delayed due to our issue. Our itinerary were changed to transfer at Beijing. At Beijing, we have to claim our luggage and have to check-out and check-in again, and passed through the custom within an hour in such a huge airport! I and my parents (they are senior with age over 60) were so rushed, so frustrated and so angry at that moment, totally disappointed.

    Now here are my questions:

    1) We were shocked, why our itinerary were changed during our trip without getting our agreement and confirmation? After back to Hong Kong, I checked the email and know they have sent us email about the schedule change on 6th Oct, but it is definitely not a good practice to change anything on your own but not getting our acknowledgment. We were on trip and stayed in some rural area without any internet connection, how could we able to know the change?!

    2) Did you notify the airline system at Osaka Airport about our reservation change? Why they were unable to instantly know about our ticket status? Why would they hardly contact Aeroplan service center, because of the office closed on Saturday in Canada? Supposedly it is 7x24 service!

    3) When we transfer at Beijing airport, why we have to do luggage claim and re-check-in again but not directly transfer at flight gate?

Finally, I won't blame any airport-ground-agents in Osaka since they really have put their big effort on helping us. I saw 7 agents working together on helping our issue, and the flight was delayed too. I thank so much for their help and support.

In conclusion, I am disappointed with Aeroplan.

    1. Just hours before flying I find out for some reason that my Aeroplan status no longer exists and this is after I made my arrangements and booked my flight with you and you charged me fees. Apparently this was effective as of yesterday! I was not even given a courtesy call to notify me, especially considering you knew I was traveling since I booked with you. I could have booked $69 return with taxes and it would have saved me. I booked with you so I can use the Air Canada lounge. I was on the phone for nearly 2 hours with an Aeroplan agent who kept giving me the run around and telling me he can't go and make changes to my account when I kept explaining to him that I had a flight in a few hours and wanted to use the lounge. Who cares about the account now?

    2. What is extremely discerning was a breach of the privacy law. The agent told me that my account was frozen by the compliance department and asked me all sorts of sensitive and private information, such as, all my bank accounts, credit card information, what bank accounts did I have, etc. I answered all his questions and was growing rather concerned and panicky since I wanted resolution so I can go to catch my flight. Every time I answered and asked him why is he asking this (a natural question because I was so concerned) he would accuse me of not wanting to cooperate and withhold information and that I wasn't given him all the information about my accounts.

I felt like I was being interrogated in a disciplinary way. He then asked me all the companies I worked for and did I ever work at a bank before. And if I can think of any reason why the compliance department is investigating me, can I think of something that happened recently? Have I done anything to Air Canada to cause them to request launch of an investigation on me? And he was accusing me of withholding information on several accounts. Now I was extremely panicky--I did not understand how this was relevant and now feeling like it was some criminal interrogation.

The agent then told me that "there is nothing" he could do for me because compliance froze my account and they had to resolve it and he had no information. So now I want to know why I was requested to provide him with all that personal and sensitive information (employer history and banking information) when it was not relevant as he could not have and was unable to help me anyways. And why I was made out to be a criminal or something and accusations of me withholding information every time I asked why this is being asked of me as this is my right. All this is a serious violation of the Privacy Act (PIPEDA) across multiple principles:

4.2.2. The Limiting Collection principle (Clause 4.4) requires an organization to collect only that information necessary for the purposes that have been identified.

4.2.3. The identified purposes should be specified at or before the time of collection to the individual from whom the personal information is collected.

4.2.5. Persons collecting personal information should be able to explain to individuals the purposes for which the information is being collected.

4.3. Principle 3: Consent. The knowledge and consent of the individual are required for the collection, use, or disclosure of personal information, except where inappropriate.

4.3.2. The principle requires knowledge and consent. Organizations shall make a reasonable effort to ensure that the individual is advised of the purposes for which the information will be used. To make the consent meaningful, the purposes must be stated in such a manner that the individual can reasonably understand how the information will be used or disclosed.

4.4.1. Organizations shall not collect personal information indiscriminately. Both the amount and the type of information collected shall be limited to that which is necessary to fulfill the purposes identified. Organizations shall specify the type of information collected as part of their information-handling policies and practices, in accordance with the Openness principle (Clause 4.8).

4.4.2. The requirement that personal information be collected by fair and lawful means is intended to prevent organizations from collecting information by misleading or deceiving individuals about the purpose for which information is being collected. This requirement implies that consent with respect to collection must not be obtained through deception.

When I asked for a reference or ID number the agent refused and was curt and said he couldn't care less for Aeroplan and if it went down or lost his job, he couldn't even care less. So if I wanted to complain about him, I can go right ahead when all I wanted was a reference number!

    3. I was finally passed on to a supervisor (Alex) after much request and wait. I didn’t have much time to speak to him as I had to leave for the airport. When I arrived at the airport, I find out that Aeroplan did not get an electronic ticket issued to me for Chicago to Orlando so I would have been stuck in Chicago! Yet I paid, got a confirmation and receipt from you! In short, I was running around in the airport from kiosk to kiosk, quite frantic since I was missing my flight out to Chicago from Toronto as I was trying to get this resolved. I ended up missing my flight despite my efforts. Finally, Air Canada Customer Service Team Leader John, after witnessing my going through much stress, panic, frustration and lost of my purse as I went from kiosk to kiosk, helped me and I finally got another ticket issued out.

    4. However, to my dismay, I see now as I waited for my flight out (finally) that you had the audacity to charge me for the ticket stating that "I requested for a change"! This has to be a joke! You want me to pay twice because the first time I paid you, you didn't generate me a ticket and as a result I was running frantically around from aisle to aisle, kiosk to kiosk, trying to get this resolved, missed my flight, and nearly had a heart attack?! This is totally unacceptable!

Please reverse these charges to my Visa card ASAP. I am traveling and do not want any problems of having extra unplanned charges to it. I don't want to be rejected for a hotel and not have anywhere to stay because of another Aerpolan issue. Wouldn't that just be a grand story? I also would like a response regarding issues numbers 1, 2 and 3--what is going on?

I paid fees to accumulate my points faster (more expensive credit cards, yearly fees through credit card) and I have been accumulating points for a very long time now. I finally try using my rewards mile for the very first time ever and this is what happens?! And all the questions and interrogation I went through is a privacy law violation. This is misuse and mishandling of customer information! As per PIPEDA and Aeroplan’s policy, I would like a formal explanation of the customer agent’s purpose of his inquiry and intentions for collection of my personal information (i.e. regarding my credit card accounts, banking information, past employment history and going back to 1999, etc.) and why I was constantly accused of withholding information.

What a nightmare of a story! And it was by sheer dumb luck that I did not end up stuck in Chicago without a flight--only because I was asking a lot of questions when Air Canada said my luggage was too big for carry-on and I was telling them I was afraid of my stop-over at Chicago because luggage always goes missing there. The Air Canada agent told me it was very lucky that she spotted the error in her system, i.e. that I had no electronic ticket with United Airlines.

We wanted to use it for flight tickets to go back to my hometown. I started to call Aeroplan miles about four or five months before our planned dated. I checked the airplane that only two business seats were occupied for about at least a month, but there wasn't any seats available for Aeroplan miles customers.

They asked me to keep calling almost everyday because they do not when there will be more seats available, and also they do not know how the Aeroplan miles seats works. They told me that is all dependent on the airlines. I asked them to check full Jan, full Feb and full March because our travel time is quite flexible, but there was nothing.

Every time, when I call, it takes them at least 1 to 2 hours, sometimes even more to check all over again. I am wondering why they didn't have a waiting list of the customer needs that seat, and remind them when there is seat pop-up? Then they can email the customer to remind them if they still need it. They should have a better system to serve these customers. About a month later, I started to check if they have economic seats available, again "no". Finally we bought three tickets for our trip.

Recently I started to check what I can do with so many Aeroplan miles; then I checked hotels, but hardly find any, almost just "none". We feel so cheated. We started to doubt the value of the Aeroplan miles, and are thinking about changing our credits back to cash rebate.
