I just recently rescued a puppy two weeks ago when he was 12 weeks old. I heard great reviews from neighbors and petsmart about Nutro. I got the puppy chow and that night, he had runny diarrhea. Figured it was just the quick food change combined with young age. A week passes, he has been pooping on average 10 times sometimes more a days. All runny, mucus, different colors. So I decide to take him into the vet. They check his stool, came back negative for giardia and parvo. Now, two weeks in, he's losing weight, still going 10-12 times a day and is now today he started vomiting after he eats every time. No more Nutro for him.

Our chocolate lab, Gracie, has been eating Nutro Chicken and Rice food for some time. Recently, the packaging changed, but an email I received from the company assured me that it was still the same high quality food. When purchasing the most recent bag, my husband and I could not find "no wheat, soy or grain" marked on the bag. Gracie ate some of the food, but then refused to eat it and became ill. She had diarrhea and vomited on two occasions. She got increasingly ill and within a week's time could not walk without help. Our vet ran tests trying to find out what was wrong with her, to no avail. The final outcome was that we had to have her euthanized last Tuesday.

Recent problems with NUTRO? Read on... 20 years ago we became the "parents" of a wonderful male Westie, "Thor". He lived with us until 18 and then the "rainbow bridge". He had stomach, and skin problems. A breeder in CT, recommended NUTRO Lamb and Rice. We found the problem to be chicken. It cleared up everything. We adopted another dog last year, a rescue pup. We wanted her on NUTRO lamb and rice. We were told that we would have to go to LIMITED INGREDIENTS because chicken was now in NUTRO. We went to LIMITED. We were then told that LIMITED carried chicken. No notice, no labeling. Comment from supplier? "NUTRO has done an exceptional job of destroying and cheapening the brand." If you have problems with NUTRO, change for the health of your best friend.

I usually feed my dog either IAMs or Purina Pro Plan Lamb and Rice without incident. I recently started researching dog foods and found our brands were considered crap so I decided to try Nutro Lamb and Rice in the hopes of feeding my dog a better chow. Two weeks into the bag she began vomiting bile in the night, hours after consuming dinner. Her bowel movements were very soft and yellowish. I only allowed two days to go by like this and took her off the food. I wanted to return it to Petsmart but threw it away instead because I was afraid they'd keep it and feed it to their day boarders. She's on IAMs again and is fine. I don't care if it's "low grade" food at least it won't kill her liver. Why no recall Nutro?

We recently moved and found a great vet for our Havenese. With his allergies the Vet recommended Nutro so we tried it and our dog started throwing up bile. So we switched to Nutro Ultimate with the heavy antioxidants the throwing up stopped and he did become more frisky but his itching returned. So started to do my home work again same thing has happened to Eukanuba, Dick Van Pattens brand and now Nutro. Major companies buy these brands cheapen the product line and heavily advertise the product that used to be in the bag. Now Nutro is owned by Mars.
Like I said this has happened 3 times to us in the last 4 years. I am about ready to make my own dog food. The commercials go heavily on no dyes etc but many change suppliers to Chinese and other wholesalers of the components to maximize profits and pay for those expensive commercials with supposedly 600 quality checks daily. Probably buy the same guy who checked the baby formula a few years ago.

I noticed that Nutro changed its packaging and recipe for the Sensitive Stomach Dry Food (it used to be darker brown) but our dog kept eating it. Last week he was trying to vomit all night and eventually did throw up some fluid. He ate breakfast (Nutro) and threw it all up in an hour. He's been to the vet, and blood work showed his organs are fine but has a bacterial infection. He's been on a variety of GI tract meds (Pepcid liquid, Convenia, Cerenia) and hasn't been eating or drinking. Two days ago he had a miraculous recovery, eating 1/2 a hot dog and a bit of cooked beef. Yesterday, he ate more Nutro and now he's relapsed. Lethargic, vacant-eyed, not eating or drinking anything...turns his nose away from any type of food or treat. We're going back to the vet and never buying Nutro again.

I am shocked to read these reviews of Nutro. My dog has had several attacks of diarrhea and vomiting lately, and yesterday she had a major one. I took her to the vet and she is on meds and rice and chicken diet. I went to the internet to check out reviews on Nutro and was stunned to find so many... and by people whose pets have the same symptoms as my dog. She is very ill. I am taking the Nutro back to PetSmart tomorrow. I emailed them and they said they would make a full refund even though I don't have my receipt.

My dog has been on this dog food for years. Toby had at least two episodes a year with Diarrhea and vomiting. The vet told me to put him on a boiled chicken and rice diet, and give him 1 1/2 teaspoons of Mylanta twice a day for about a week, and I should see him getting better. I thought he may have a sensitive stomach. Well, I decided to try Nutro Ultra for small senior dogs and that is when he felt really bad! Took him off that after reading bad results. So decided to put back on Natural choice again and then I started looking up Nutro dog food and this consumer affairs complaints I noticed. Over 1,000 complaints! Well that is all it took. My dog will never eat any of their dog food again. Taking back the bag to Petsmart and showing them these complaints. Someone needs to do something about this. Thank you all for your comments... You may have saved my Toby!

I started feeding my toy pomeranian the Nutro small breed rice, chicken and oatmeal, and the next day, he was lethargic, diarrhea, bloody stool. He was that way for a whole week even after taking him to the vet. They told me he had a problem in his intestines due to something he ate, and gave him medicine which helped him. When it was time to introduce him to dry food again, I decided to stick to Nutro, because it's hard to find real ingredients at an affordable price for dog food. This time I have been buying Nutro Ultra toy breed adult and he hasn't gotten sick. In fact, his coat looks healthier and he is just fine. I truly believe something is wrong with the Nutro chicken, rice and oatmeal kind after so many reviews I read and my own experience. But I am satisfied with the Nutro food I'm currently buying. There should definitely be a recall on the one I mentioned and I will make sure I never get that kind again!

I could not pass up this opportunity to express how deeply saddened it is to read of all your disheartening experiences that have come about since purchasing the Nutro product line. I too had fallen unaware of such deception in what constitutes sound nutrition and meeting a holistic standard of quality for my pets; because since last year when looking up the company Seeds of Change and seeing my favorite seed company (as and LLC) had been no longer, had to do to with the fact that Mars Incorporated purchased them. Such a business transaction had not only taken care of any future purchase power I was going to choose to extend to the new shareholders (i.e Mars), but immediately put a stop to feeding my dog Nutro Choice and Nutro Max Lamb and Brown Rice Kibble Dog Food as I had done since 1986.
They never had life-threatening gastrointestinal issues but I feel that their growths/tumors (most especially the eldest dogs now of 10 and 13 years of age) may be a symptom of the changes in company acquisition and product line (i.e. vendors?) with the use of GMO infused foods. Please take some time and explore the list of companies owned by Mars Incorporated; and ponder on a connection to the recall (and perhaps not enough thereof as pertains to the amount of testimonials given on this site) of dog food brand names over the years, and quite possibly correlations to some of our dogs diseases and deaths. Here to raise consciousness.

Now I am concerned for my dog - he is seriously ill! Vomiting, diarrhea and may not be alive in the next few days. The Vet says the liver and blood work was way off. Now, I am thinking this is first time that I used Nutro, but I had to travel and wanted a dry food. I had Never used this food before! What a nightmare - don't buy this food. I have been buying Max Cat Adult Roasted Chicken Flavor kibble for my cat, Gray Cat, for years. She really liked it, and I liked it because its location was City of Industry that is local to me. However, something changed one day. The color changed from brown to orange and my cat threw up several times. I tried other brands that she does not like, but at least she does not get sick. I bought it again hoping for the best, and I heard her hacking again and she was bloated. After a period, again I tried hoping brown and it was brown "the old color" and Gray Cat liked it. Then I bought it again, and it was orange again. I would not buy it so many times if it were not the one food my cat really liked. Ingredients read the same but it is not local address any more. Maybe the process changed when they moved. I'm just really sad for my cat. I have not contacted Max Nutro regarding this.

I had my dogs on Blue for some time and the husky got tired of it. So, I switched to a couple of different brands. My dogs loved the Rachael Ray that I can get at the grocery store. That said, Dogs will love anything, so I saw Nutro Balance and thought to buy as I heard good things about this food. They were okay with the food at first, but then on the 2nd bag they started getting diarrhea and vomiting. I gave my dogs steamed rice and chicken and they were okay. I gave them Rachael Ray Chicken with rice and they were okay with the food. I restarted the Nutro balance food again and they are getting sick. It's the food. One of my dogs has the diarrhea and the other husky vomits the next morning and his food is whole. It was not digested at all. I will not use this brand again. I bought the food from Chewy.com and they gave me a refund.

I started this ordeal in June 2015. My dog started vomiting after a new bag of Nutro Senior Chicken Whole Brown Rice and Oatmeal was fed to him. He had the same food for years. We took him to the vet and his liver enzymes were really high. He was treated with antibiotics and looked like he was going to make it. He only lasted 45 days. He was never a sick dog. We contacted Nutro, we filled all the paperwork they asked for, we authorized them to contact the vets (3), and never got a phone back or an email. We called, talk to customer service (after been on hold forever), never call us back. No answers from them. The worst thing is that we lost our dog. He suffered because of the bad food and we had to put him to sleep. DO NOT BUY THIS FOOD!!!

I have had my dogs on Nutro brand Lamb and Rice dog food for over 10 years with no complaints. However, the last 2 bags had different packaging and the kibble looked different... Not brown like they used to be, but yellowish in colour. For the last month, my Border Collie, who used to devour his food, started picking at it. He would either sniff it and walk away or take a few in his mouth and drop them on the floor and walk away. His stools became soft, with mucous and blood 1-1/2 weeks ago. I thought it was simply the heat of the summer and his age. My Jack Russell Terrier wasn't quite as picky and ate it until last week, until he started having the same bowel movement problems that my Border Collie had. I narrowed it down to the Nutro dry food and have replaced it with Wellness Core Dry Food six days ago.
However, although my Border Collie appears to be back to normal, my Jack Russell has continued to deteriorate, even though he's been on a 4 day regimen of Metronidazole. I took him to the vet today and he's been diagnosed with gastritis and pancreatitis. If I can't keep his fluid intake up, I have to take him back tomorrow to be put on IV fluids. He has been prescribed 10 more days of Metronidazole and Sulcrate Plus. He can't have food until tomorrow, starting off with bits of Royal Canin gastrointestinal canned food, then graduating to boiled chicken, rice and boiled sweet potato, and then hopefully introducing the Wellness Core dry food. I have also switched the Nutro Natural Choice dry cat food to Orijen, as they also started becoming disinterested with the new bag of food bought 3 weeks ago.
Five days ago I started researching for recalls on the Nutro food and found no recent ones. Continued research brought me to all these complaints on Consumer Affairs. That was the final heads-up for me. Thanks to everyone who has posted their concerns. I emailed the Nutro Company about my concerns with a link to the Consumer Affairs site. I received an email back saying, "sorry about what you're going through...please call us." However, I've seen several posts on here that people have called the Nutro Company but with no resolve.
According to the veterinarian, there are NO regulations for pet food in Canada and only minimal in the United States. I am so disgusted!! I am even more disgusted that Nutro won't budge from their "there's nothing wrong with our food" standpoint. It's all about the money, you know. I will NEVER buy Nutro brand again, not only because it has caused health problems for my dogs, but also because of their non-caring attitude. Nutro brand dog and cat food needs to be analyzed and recalled if need be.

Within hours of feeding this to both my 12 year old pug and 2 year old Pitbull, both had diarrhea... Everywhere for days. I wish I had read these reviews first. This seems to be a common theme among consumers. Thank god I got them pureed pumpkin and was able to nurse them back to health. It ruined their stomachs & my carpet... Not to mention the puke. It was so hard seeing them in pain and not able to hold their bowels for more than ten minutes. They were both lethargic and sad with their tails tucked under not knowing what was happening to them. I feel terrible for buying this for them, but mark my words, it will NEVER happen again.

My 55# Catahoula Cur (10 years old) has been on Canidae Rice & Lamb and on Blue Rice & Lamb. The latter greatly improved her fur: very little grease and no smell. I recently switched to Nutro Rice & Lamb, which she had many years ago as well. Her fur stayed well, so I got the second 30# bag of Nutro, this time chicken because it was on sale. The kibble was different, golden yellow circles (like cheerios). She started having trouble with her bowel movements, they seemed to bother her and they were slow, yellow and slimy. She started to lose interest in walks. The second bag was lamb, and I talked at PetSmart about the changed color and size of the kibble and not being too impressed.
They acknowledged to be aware of it, but didn't mention any complaints. The lamb was also yellow, which I find strange. In the course of recent weeks, she has become worse and often doesn't want to eat, just looks at me as if to say "don't you get it?" She does not have other symptoms such as throwing up, but is simply very lethargic, like a 17-year-old dog. She trails behind on walks. Even the pet sitter mentioned her unhappy behavior yesterday. I swapped the bag for Blue today and am very disappointed about all manufacturers of all products who keep changing/destroying good products.

I'm very glad I found this page which verified my suspicion that Nutro has changed its formula. It took me a long time to find a food for my yellow lab that didn't make him itch and throw up. I thought Nutro Venison and Brown Rice was it and have been using it for several years. Recently, I opened a new bag and he has been itching and throwing up for several weeks off and on, which has gradually become more often. I'm throwing out this bag and have him eating rice and hamburger until I go get him some Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Stomach food. I hope that will relieve his torment!

I am severely disappointed in this dog food we got for our golden basset. We were hoping to improve his diet, but instead I have found that it is much worse for him than even Purina One. We put him on this food a month ago and everything was fine. A couple of weeks into it he started vomiting yellow bile twice a day. We tried feeding him more frequently, thinking that his stomach was empty but it did not help. We switched to a bag of leftover Purina One, which we have used with other dogs and he was fine the next day. After a few days we tried Nutro again and he's back to vomiting. Last night he refused to even eat it. We emptied his dish and gave him Purina and he gobbled it down like he was starving. I've heard about dog foods that essentially starve the animals nutritionally but I always assumed it was the cheap brands. Sorry to say I think Nutro is one of these.

I have bought Nutro lamb and rice for my two golden retrievers for nine years. One of my dogs had issues and could not eat anything but lamb. For this reason they both ate the same. I find every time I go to purchase for at least the last two months my selection keeps changing. The first being the canned adult lamb and rice ground, which listed it as Savory. I used this ground food into hollow bones, freeze them and my last surviving golden Meadow gets this pupcical every night. After using this food she had a bout of severe diarrhea.
I took the unused cans back and was told it was just a branding change not to the food. I asked them why has my dog been sick? They had no response. I exchanged for the grain free lamb and rice and she was fine. I went tonight to purchase these cans again but to no avail, no lamb and rice. I purchased lamb and potato. I asked again if Nutro changing all their food. She said it is just a branding change with Nutro. I told her I didn't believe that. Because my dog was quite sick before. I want to know why Nutro did not warn the consumer of this change in advance? They should know personally that dogs cannot change their diets that fast - they need to be weaned. I am thinking of changing altogether. Sorry Nutro - you've lost a consumer.

I have been feeding our dogs Nutro for 7 years and never have had a bad experience, I want to make that clear, until recently. I bought a bag of the Nutro Salmon and Sweet Potato blend, like I normally do and found out this is what suddenly has caused my Golden Retriever to have a serious bout of diarrhea and my Chihuahua mix to vomit. This went on for a couple of days and I determined it had to be the food. The day I switched to Science Diet Ideal Balance everything cleared up for both dogs. I believe Nutro needs to take a closer look at this problem and recall their dog food. We've been feeding our Pit Bull Nutro brand foods her entire 12 year life; our other Pit as well before she passed. We've had to change from the high protein grain-free chicken to the salmon and chickpea recipe as she had an allergic reaction to the chicken recipe. Since the new bags have been out, our dog has had increasingly more severe gastrointestinal distress. Her stomach is constantly gurgling, and we've had two separate occasions of raging mucous covered diarrhea in the house. This is not a dog that goes to the bathroom in the house.
We've started feeding her fresh chicken and rice, and that fixes the diarrhea issues, but getting her back on your food leads to a re-occurrence. This is absolutely ridiculous; if there has been a new recipe, your consumers should be alerted to this fact, instead of leaving them in the blue; I should not have to do two hours of research online to find out that your company was bought out by another company, or that your recipe was changed. My husband and I are completely outraged by this, and will never again purchase any Nutro products for our pet, nor our future pets.

I don't know why people only write reviews to whine and cry about things and no one ever writes them to say hey its a good product. Squeaky annoying wheels get the grease. I have seen varieties of food make dogs sick and others be fine on it. As for finding bugs... Check where you got it from. My dog meantime has been on this brand since he hit adulthood and has had no issues. He maintains a great weight, healthy coat and no illnesses. He eats the lamb and rice small bites and looks forward to his mealtimes. Anytime he has been sick has been due to eating things he shouldn't have like grass or deer poop.
Honestly, my only complaint about this food is it is a bit costly and coupons are scarce. But he is a smaller sized dog (Corgi- 33 pounds) and feeding the amount the vet recommends (Not what the bag says! What the vet says!) The 30 pound bag lasts him about 6 weeks. (We substitute some of the food out because he is a treat monger) I would recommend this for active breed dogs with thicker than normal fur. It's been very good for him and we are happy and he is happy and healthy.

I am so upset and disappointed right now that I don't know how to start writing this review! I have a 1 year old male Beagle who have been feeding on Nutro Chicken, whole brown rice and oatmeal recipe as per recommendation from a Pet Supermarket associate. Right after we started him on this food, our dog has presented several episodes of bile foam vomiting, making them periodically as well as very soft stool. We thought that the dog was stomach sensitive and may have acid reflux so we took him to the Vet. After several Vet visits with the same issue, he was sent home with some medicine to treat the vomiting and diarrhea. Little that we know, he will improve immediately under a bland diet and medication and right after transitioning to his regular food the same episodes will come back again. We didn't know what to do but we knew our dog was getting sick little by little. :(
Then the nightmare started. We started slowly transitioning from puppy to adult food (same brand) and after 2 weeks our dog got very sick, dehydrated and vomiting and poppy blood!!! We took immediately to the Vet and stayed hospitalized for 2 days. All kind of exams and medicines to treat him and save his life. Finally, the doctor came with the diagnostic "severe hemorrhagic gastritis"! No idea what may cause this to our dog.
After being on special diet, I introduced slowly to his regular food and 2 days after, started with the bile foam vomiting again!!! Yesterday I am feeding him as usual and to my surprise I found on his food what it looks like a "popcorn roach" yes!!! A dried crunchy half roach buddy on his food!!! I got so upset and nervous that I immediately contacted the consumer department for the Nutro company with the complaint. After answering a bunch of questions that took me nowhere, I am going through the food and found another huge roach!!!! Completely roasted!!! Totally disgusting!! See photos attached!!
I am so upset right now and so guilty that I couldn't identify earlier that this brand food was killing my dog!!! Please be aware that this company know exactly what's happening and do NOTHING!!! Several complaints (more than 2000) and a latest recall in 2015 has done anything to avoid this product to reach the pet stores shelves!!! They keep selling them and making sick a lot of dogs!!! The company offer sales incentives to the stores managers for pushing their food that's why the associates recommended on the first place!!! We are now switching him to Blue Buffalo.

In the last month he has been vomiting, doesn't want to go for walks and has a UTI and crystals in his urine. I have had him for 3 years and he has never had a UTI before. The 2 weeks of antibiotics haven't cured his UTI and I have to take him back to the vet this weekend. I truly believe it is the dog food and I will never buy or recommend Nutro Choice to anyone. He has been back on the Purina ProPlan one day and already he is showing signs of improvement!!!

Small Breed Adult Chicken, Whole Brown Rice & Oatmeal Recipe - Our 3 year old Shih Tzu has been eating Nutro dog food since he was 6 weeks old. Periodically he would get sick and throw up bile foam. We thought it was due to having an empty stomach. However recently my hubby bought a new bag of food and within the week he has been vomiting up the food, and yellow bile in addition to diarrhea. Well our dog has never had diarrhea so immediately we got him to the Vet. The Vet ran blood work and his liver levels were high and he was also dehydrated, poor baby.
So the doctor prescribed antibiotics, and iron supplements in addition to nausea medication. The doctor seems to think he just ingested something that did not agree with his tummy. At the time of the doctor visit I did not think it was the dog food since we have been feeding it to him all this time and never has he once had loose bowels. After the visit we had him on a bland diet and after a few days of that and the meds he was on the mend. No more vomit or diarrhea, what a relief!!
So after a few days I slowly incorporated the dog food back into his diet along with rice and cottage cheese. This evening my little guy was vomiting bile and I immediately thought it has to be the dog food!! I searched online to see if there was a recall and came upon the horrible reviews of this food and the illness it is causing dogs and cats. Tomorrow I will be calling the Vet and letting him know in addition to contacting Nutro. I will stop feeding our dog this food. Please beware and always go with your gut feeling. So glad my momma instincts kicked in and I feel confident this was the culprit all along.

We should have never switched from Blue to Nutro! At the end of June 2015, I grabbed a bag of Nutro Large Breed Adult Lamb & Rice dry food because it was on sale and we were on a tight budget about to head out of town. What a big mistake! We left on the 2nd of July. I was so upset with our sitters because we found 3 spots of dry vomit in our living room and then our year & a half old golden/lab retriever had several massive diarrhea accidents inside our living room (he's never done this before) as well as, same bowels outside when we walked him. We called our vet, put him on rice & boiled meats and it got somewhat better, but then slowly gave him his food with rice and boom, here comes the diarrhea again. Nothing worse than dealing with a long haired dog and that! Luckily, PetSmart has a dog food policy that I can return it and get a refund but now that I am reading a ton of other complaints, I wanted to add one of my own.
Some people are saying that it's killing their animals or making them so sick they've had to hospitalize them. I had our last puppy on Nutro (as recommended by PetSmart & approved by our Vet) and suddenly he refused to eat it at the beginning of 2014. I assumed they changed formulas as they kept placing it on sale. We too changed to Blue afterwards. And now that I'm reading, many did the same. People are trying to get them to recall it but Nutro isn't listening. I hope this helps. I will not be making that mistake again! Thanks. (I added the receipt but he does have some heat damage. It's still there though.)

I have a 6 weeks old Rottweiler Puppy. The breeder had him on Puppy Chow. I went to Petco and the sales associates there advised me that Nutro would be better Puppy food for my Rottweiler, especially the nutritional value. It was explained to me it was made with all natural products, which was a plus for me. I purchased two cans of the Puppy Chicken w/ rice and a 30 lb bag of dry Puppy food. I haven't opened the dry Puppy food yet, however I'm on my second can of Nutro Puppy food. Today my Puppy has been throwing-up all day. I've read numerous reports on this consumer affairs site and the more I read the more I see an overall pattern here. I am throwing away what's left of the canned Nutro Puppy food and I plan on returning the 30 lb bag of Nutro Dry Puppy food to Petco. It looks as though these complaints have been recent, within this year. I think Nutro should take these complaints seriously and pull the product off the shelf!!

I have been slowly transitioning my Chiweenie on to Nutro Lite to help him lose some weight. He was on Blue Buffalo previously. The transition started off wonderful. He was taking Pepcid to ease any stomach upsets he would have. He started with 25% Nutro and 75% Blue. He did that split for 3 days and all seemed well. I transitioned to 50% Nutro and 50% Blue. He started to have some tummy troubles, so I continued with the Pepcid. He had been on a 50/50 mix for a week. All of a sudden, I came home from work, and my dog was pooping blood. I rushed him to the vet to do a fecal and all was normal. We came home, and he wouldn't eat and just lied around. I started giving him Chicken and Rice as well as Metronidazole to ease his tummy troubles.
The next morning he was having discomfort and was lethargic. I scheduled a vet exam. She concluded he didn't have any rectal problems (colitis), and sent me home to continue chicken and rice and the Metro. On my lunch break the next day, I went home to check on my pup. He finally pooped again, but it was super loose, thick, super black and tacky (best analogy would be that of a baby's first diaper). After he pooped, he became uncomfortable again. I'm not 100% positive it is from Nutro Lite, but all the reviews I have read state similar symptoms. He hasn't had any of these symptoms before the transition to Nutro Lite. I would advise to stay away from Nutro Lite if you are transitioning to a lower calorie diet.

This was my Maltese favorite food until a couple of months ago when she started getting sick and would not want to eat it. I thought she just had a problem and took her to the Vet who couldn't find anything wrong with her. After a visit to a different Vet (2nd opinion) confirmed there was nothing wrong with her and I was given a prescription for a different food which she took for 2 weeks and she felt Great. Once again I started giving her the Nutro and almost instantly she started getting sick again!! Something was changed in the original recipe. I'm not the only person having this problem lately with Nutro.

I bought a small bag of the venison dry dog food for my two dogs to try and they ate this food right away at meals, but I noticed they seemed to be throwing up every so often. I thought it odd but didn't link it to the food immediately. I then bought a large 30lb. bag. Each dog would still eat right away at meals, but they have been throwing up every day or every other day. Their throw up was not the clear or yellow color, but a darker, more orange color. As soon as I changed their food to another brand, they have been fine and stopped throwing up. I would NOT recommend this food to anyone. If you research this brand online there have been tons of recalls over the years and many complaints.

My two aging setters have been on the Nutro Senior (silver bag) for several years, with no problems. Just purchased a new bag (new packaging - new formula?) on June 30, 2015. The 11 y.o. English Setter had mucus-y diarrhea the next afternoon (July 1). She seemed to get a little better over the next several days, but today (July 5), vomited this morning, and her stool was just bloody mucus this afternoon. She won't take food or water at this point. I'm seriously suspecting this new bag of food. The 14 y.o. Irish Setter has not had diarrhea, but she is quite feeble (due to her advanced age), and I'm just sick that I gave them that food. It's going in the trash can, and I'm praying my little Rosie pulls through this. Fortunately, there's a veterinarian in the family.

Chicken Brown Rice Senior Dog food - On or about May 28, 2015, I bought a new 30 pound bag of this food. I have fed my dogs (ages 9 and 11 Nutro foods since I adopted them each at 8 weeks old.) I still had a small amount left of my prior purchase of the same, but I had a 10% off coupon from Petco that expired at the end of the month. About a week later, I began feeding my dogs from the new bag. Almost immediately, my 2 Shih Tzu started pooping very large (larger than mine), mucously, urgent poops in my room during the night (something they never do since we all sleep in there with the door closed) and several other soft stools during the day.
I switched over to white rice/pumpkin/boiled hamburger or chicken, and they improved. I started adding in a bit of the Nutro and cutting down on the amount of rice, etc. When I got up to about 1/3 cup of the Nutro combined with the rice mixture, symptoms returned. I went back to the rice mixture and then began adding in Rachael Ray turkey/potato food over the next several days so as not to upset their stomachs with new food. A week later, I have been feeding them the Rachael Ray exclusively and have not had any further problems.
I've seen many comments on this website about dogs vomiting bile. My dogs have vomited bile for years and I thought it was something strange about empty stomachs. I can see now that I have probably been poisoning my dogs for years. However, this last batch of Nutro has something VERY wrong with it and it needs to be recalled.

We just bought a new bag of Nutro Ultra Large Breed from the same location we always do and into their second feeding both of the dogs had explosive diarrhea with a reddish/orange tinge to it and our female has been throwing up on top of the diarrhea.
Our dogs never mess in the house. They can typically hold their bowel movements or pace at the door until we are able to let them outside and to see that they both got sick in the house truly shows how sick this dog food has made them. I am so disappointed that Nutro has not addressed the thousands of complaints that I am now finding online after researching this exact problem from thousands of dog owners. Last week we bought her a new bag of the weight control, which she has been on for the last five. She started it on Saturday. We woke up Sunday morning to vomit dozens of times and loose stools. She refused to eat or drink and was very lethargic. We assumed she ate something bad and she seemed to get better, but still did not eat and drank very little water.
Monday night she had explosive diarrhea everywhere and what looked like a reddish tinge to it. Took her to the emergency vet and they said she probably ate something bad. They gave her something for the nausea and the diarrhea. The only thing that has changed in her diet was this newest bag of Nutro Max. I purchased a bag of the Nutro Chicken, Brown Rice & Oatmeal for sensitive stomachs from PetSmart for my four year old German Shepherd. After weeks of digging, reading and researching I am absolutely convinced that this product is the reason my dog nearly died. My GSD ate his food and a tad later, he started going crazy...shoving his head into the sofa. His eyes were bugging out of his head. His mouth and nose were swelling. Suddenly, his hind end drops to the ground and he's going nuts.
I'm freaking out because I have never seen anything like it. I get him in my car and rush him to the ER on a Sunday. Vet tells me he was going into anaphylactic shock. The vet told me that he may have been stung by a bee or a spider. Who am I to argue that? I have never been a witness to an animal going into shock and it scared the "L" out of me. The vet gave him Benadryl and a shot of a steroid to help him. After waiting to see how he would do, I paid my vet bill of $240.00 and went home. I love my dog so much and I was really shaken by what occurred. I was happy to see he was going to be okay.
Fast forward 4 days later. My dog walks over to my daughter. She is filming him and says "mom, he doesn't look so well." He has those puppy dog eyes going on. He vomits phlegm which has blood in it. We no sooner grab some paper towels to clean it up then he starts going into another episode of anaphylactic shock. Only this time it's bad...real bad. He weighs a 100 lbs and I knew I couldn't get him to my car in the state he was in. I was on the phone with the vet to have emergency services come to my home.
He dropped to the floor and you could tell he was in respiratory distress. His breathing was labored and at one point he became non-responsive. He was drooling and his eyes were blank and staring into space. Personally, I thought he was a goner. As my daughter was crying and didn't know what to do, I told her the very best thing she could do for him was to be at his side, calmly pet him and let him know that she was there for him. By the grace of God, he started looking around and then the vet and her assistant arrived.
My dog was loaded into the car and spent the next 7 hours at the vet. He nearly died that day. Another $800.00 and we still can't find a bloody thing wrong with him. I have spent the last week reading everything I could get my hands on and trying to find out how or why my dog went into anaphylactic shock. Something told me to take a look and see if there have been any recalls on the food and lo and behold I stumble across Consumer Affairs and without a doubt, I see where there could be a real connection. I thank God that I came across the complaints regarding Nutro dog food because I believe I now know why my dog was so ill and nearly died. I will never purchase a Nutro product again.

I had been trying to find them a good, grain-free dry food that they would both eat, and they both decided to eat Natural Choice. I was finally committed to one brand of dry cat food, Pepper being a very finicky eater.
After a while, I noticed that both cats were spending quite a lot of time at the water dish and then started vomiting. At this point, I also noticed that Sherlock, who is food aggressive and doesn't fully chew his dry food, was vomiting full pieces of Natural Choice dry good, only the size of the pieces was at least 3 times the size of this food when it was dry.
I immediately switched to another dry cat food having very small pieces, and lo and behold, both cats go crazy for the new food and I haven't seen them at the water dish but maybe once or twice in the past 3 weeks, since changing to the new dry food. I don't know that all cats will have the same problem with Nutro Natural Choice that both my cats have had, but this is just a review for information only. If you think that your cat(s) may have diabetes because they are spending an inordinate amount of time at the water dish, please try switching to another high grade dry food made with smaller pieces or simply go to an all wet food diet, which I'm beginning to think is absolutely the best and only way to go.

I've noticed a lot of very polarized comments from people who have had very unfortunate issues with their pets. To be honest I find this review mechanism suspicious. Since people are more likely in general to complain than compliment it's not a surprise to see such a long list of complaints about this product and such a poor review. Some things about pet food in general are very true: The lack of controls on the pet food industry as compared to human food processing make the industry in general less safe vs human food processing. Even human food processing companies regularly make the news for various incidents. Pet food companies are COMPANIES. Their sole reason to exist is to make money. Driving costs down in various ways is something they all do.
Having said that you can buy very expensive dog food but in the end it's still processed. Personally I think it's more important to shy away from any processed food - pet or human - if any ingredient has originated in China, but that's only my opinion. My experiences with Nutro are fortunately nothing like the average reviewer here. We've had three dogs over the last 20 odd years and all of them have been fed Nutro with none of the issues or symptoms mentioned.
I find the ingredients list and nutritional profile slightly better than the average dog food, and I've examined a lot of them over the years. My dog also eats human grade food - food I eat myself - possibly half the time or a bit more. All processed food is less ideal than "real" food. Also pets, like people, can develop allergies or sensitivities to foods or things in their environment. Pets take more meds than ever before just like people do and meds may interact with food. While I empathize with the people here, especially those who have lost their pets, the testimony here is really not that valid. Mine included.

I'm posting this as a cautionary tale. I cannot say for sure that the Nutro was the culprit for my cat's illness, but it sure is at the top of the list of potential causes. As with other reviews regarding the recent label changes to Nutro products, I too became suspicious after having spent the night in the ER vet with my cat. I have a 13 year old Himalayan cat who has been eating Nutro Natural Choice canned food for over a year without incident. I fed him a can of the newly-labeled Natural Choice Chunky Chicken loaf for adult cats, and he immediately vomited. Then came the lethargy, followed by frequent, hourly vomiting of bile for the next 8 hours. By 4 am I decided it was time for the ER. Because vomiting and diarrhea can quickly trigger kidney failure in cats, I knew time was of the essence.
I'm happy to report he's been home and okay now for over 24 hours, after receiving fluids and meds for the vomiting. The doctor found zero evidence of poisoning, obstruction, or any other indication of disease. My cat never ventures outside, so it's unlikely he ingested poisonous plants/flowers. This leads me to highly suspect the Nutro, especially after reading all of the recent reviews that have similar aspects of unexplained, sudden illness after ingestion. I will no longer be using Nutro. At this point until proven otherwise I really do believe Nutro was the cause. Like other reviewers (who were lucky enough to take their pets home from the ER) the vomiting has stopped after feeding a different brand, Soulistic canned food. Please, use extreme caution with this food!

Two days later (yesterday) my second dog exhibited same symptoms. Vet believes two dogs in same household having strokes at same time is unlikely and we are dealing with a toxin. No new chemical or substances have been introduced into our home. The very inaccessible, restricted, fenced area where our dogs use when outside (which is rare) is free of anything new, and it is highly unlikely that anyone could access the area. I bought a bag of Nutro Natural Choice Chicken and Rice formula at Petsmart for my two dogs (both 65 lbs each). My younger dog is a 7 yr old border collie mix and my older dog is a 12 yr old lab mix. The oldest gets tired of her dog foods after a few bags of the same thing. She's started that at about 5 years old. So I'll switch food every few bags. I've done it for yrs now, and have never had a problem. That being said, I picked up a bag of the Nutro Natural Choice, because I'd given it to her in the past and she liked it. But since the recall a few years ago I hadn't bought it.
After a couple of weeks, I noticed my older dog vomit in the backyard. She does that on rare occasions. So I thought she probably ate something in the yard that upset her stomach. Then the next day I saw her vomit again. 2 days in a row was absolutely not normal. Around the same time, she started limping. Sometimes she might twist her ankle and it's better in a day or two, but this limp got worse and she did not want to go on walks. Within a couple of days, her limp got worse and her back legs were unsteady. She even lost her balance a couple of times. That's when I looked up Nutro food complaints and found the unending list on this sight with much of the same symptoms.
I changed food that day and within a week of eating a different brand of food her lameness and vomiting completely disappeared. I have no doubt that it was the food. Nothing else had changed. I wanted to write a comment the day I found this complaint but waited to see if it would disappear and it is absolutely completely gone now.

I know of at least 4 dogs that have been on Nutro and had the same issues. What is being put in this food to cause this? This needs to be looked into. Thank you.

Got home and fed my dog and noticed that the morsels looked more airy and puffy. The next day my dog was vomiting, had projectile diarrhea and has not been sick for 3 days. Nutro states that they only changed the packaging but clearly they changed more than that. I have now had to located an old bag online and have it shipped so I can start mixing it with a new brand. I've read a lot of comments here that directly correlate a dog's illness or death to this food, which is scientifically (and logically) unsound. Many other factors could have been involved. I've been feeding this food for over a year to my two mixed breed dogs. The older one had diarrhea for weeks. She'd been eating Blue Buffalo for a long time, but her stomach suddenly decided it couldn't tolerate some ingredient. After a week on a Science Diet product (not a long-term solution -- it's made from hydrolyzed pea protein and is very, very expensive) to rebalance her system, I tried the Nutro Natural Choice Limited Ingredient diet. Bingo. Her tummy went back to normal and she and my other dog have thrived.

I noticed in about Feb or March of 2013 that Nutro changed their packaging. I looked at the ingredients and noticed they had changed and the fat content was much higher. It that time I had been feeding this produce for about three years with no problems. Because of the increased fat content I discontinued using this product. Unfortunately my son was feeding his dog the same food. I thought he was feeding a different product so I did not advise him of the change.
About two months later he noticed his dog had extremely loose and black stools. She also started vomiting a salmon color. I thought she was vomiting the food. I took her to the vet and he said it looked like she had been poisoned. We had 4 transfusions, all kind of medications at the hospital, a $2,500.00 bill and she did not make it. I know it was the food. She was restricted to his or my yard and could not have been poisoned. She was a miniature schnauzer and they can not take a high fat content. I find it very interesting that the other accounts seem to be after the packaging and ingredient change! It is a shame they can make changes and not notify the public of the change.

My German Shepherd dog died at exactly 4:02 pm CST today at home. I had changed his food to the Nutro Natural Choice dog food because of allergies and needed a grain free quality food. After about a month, he started having some vomiting of yellow foamy liquid and had bowel movements with mucous present. I just figured he was experiencing a slight stomach upset for whatever reason. Continued the Nutro, and he started becoming shaky in the back legs and panted heavily.
I took him to the vet last week. She thought it was just a stomach upset and said to not feed him any table scraps, just a bland diet. She also gave him a pain shot for discomfort and an anti-nausea shot. Continued on the Nutro, he became more listless, weak and trembly in the rear legs after he ate the Nutro. Between meals he would seem to recover and then become sicker after eating. Towards the end, he refused the Nutro and became quite weak, panted profusely and could hardly walk on his back legs.
Took him to his vet after hours today. The vet said he was in very bad shape but didn't know why. No elevated temp, but his gums were pure white and he was panting and very weak. Gave Vit. K shot, blood coagulant shot and hydrocortisone shot. Also long term antibiotic shot. Brought him home and he died approximately twenty minutes later. My dog has always been very robust and healthy. Only problem he ever had was allergies but I gave him natural fish oils and the problem was resolved. Now he's dead. Got sick and died within a period of 3 weeks after starting Nutro Natural Choice dog food. I am very angry and upset.

He experienced urinary blockage which shut down his kidneys and he had to be put down. We couldn't afford an autopsy so we will never know the cause but I feel that this new food may be to blame. And I, like many others, can do nothing about it because we lack the funding to pursue the matter further. I had no idea Nutro was behind all these recalls until after his death today. It's also the only food that's kept his coat shiny and dandruff free. I wonder if the quality or my cat has changed recently though, because his coat doesn't look quite as good and it's been hairballs galore lately. I didn't think anything of it at first, since she has a sort of sensitive stomach. However, I became concerned when my other dog also started vomiting bile, since she almost never gets sick. They have been vomiting at least once a day for a couple of days now. This, coupled with their weird yellow stools, has convinced me to switch back to Science Diet before they get worse. This Sunday I thought I would have to put her down as her breathing became so labored. Still, it seemed almost like an allergy so I started looking online for allergies and then info on the food I was feeding her. Well the Nutro complaints all sounded familiar including vomiting and falling down. I should have known when she suddenly didn't want to touch her food that something was wrong. I have 2 dogs, 7 & 5, both have been on Nutro natural choice from the start. We have been extremely loyal to the brand and are deeply concerned with recent events. Over the last few months, we have noticed bile around the home, attributing it to change in weather we just watched them carefully. Two weeks ago we bought a new bag of the lamb and rice large breed formula, to our surprise the kibble seemed much larger and smelled more pungent than usual.
In less than 3 days on the new food, our oldest who is epileptic and has maybe 3 seizures a year, began to seize. This continued each day for 4 days, never before having back to back episodes. Her hair was shedding to an alarming degree and dry and she was lethargic and listless. Our boy was incessantly licking his paw, and had dry brittle coat and lifted his leg inside twice, which has not happened before.
After extensive research on what could be happening I finally decided to check for a recall, only to do my due diligence, never thinking it could be the food after all these years. No recall, but to my surprise, I found this forum. We immediately took them off the food and have done chicken, rice and veggies since. It's been 5 days and as of last night they are both back to their old selves, including the softness in their coats. I'm so disappointed in the company, thinking that we were going above and beyond for our dogs, we have inadvertently exposed them to toxins. We will be having the food analyzed.

I have 3 dogs. All WERE on Nutro natural choice senior lamb & rice limited ingredient, mostly because my golden was highly allergic to chicken. This seemed to be the only food that kept her food allergies at bay. I used to swear by this brand because of that. I also stuck with Nutro lamb & rice treats. At some point my baby became super itchy & was chewing at herself causing hot spots to develop in less than 8hrs. I couldn't figure out what was causing it, no change in diet/ treats. Then looked at the ingredients in the treats, and at some point Nutro changed the ingredients. To the number one ingredient in the "Lamb & Rice" treats was now CHICKEN. Without any notifications!
I immediately stopped giving her those treats and her skin was back to normal. BUT... Shortly after, maybe two months later I started noticing ALL 3 of my dogs were randomly vomiting then noticed it about once daily, a green/yellow bile like foam. After wondering if it could be the food I asked my mom how her 2 dogs were doing. BOTH of her dogs were vomiting about 3 times a day. One was rushed to the vet after she was vomiting blood and stomach tissue. The vet couldn't find anything wrong with her. My sister’s dog was also on Nutro and she said that her dog had been vomiting too. Our poor babies!! The vet has never been able to pinpoint the issue. Recently our dog started vomiting after every meal. We are now convinced it's the food after reading all the complaints on here. I am so heartbroken we've been basically poisoning our dog with this food that is touted to be "high quality." Never again. I hope this company not only closes but has to pay retribution to all the people that have had to be put through sick dogs, vet visits, and sadly loss of pets. I have a 4 month old Great Dane. Around the beginning of February, I began feeding him Nutro's Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy Lamb & Whole Brown Rice formula. I had purchased the 15 lb bag to see if he liked it. He did. On February 22nd I needed more food and picked up the 30 lb bag. To my surprise, the size of the kibble was larger, but considering my dog was already 50 lbs I wasn't worried about him having trouble eating the larger size. This should have been my "buyer beware" moment.
That night, my dog vomited for 4 hours. I took him to the vet in the morning. They thought he had picked up a bug from another puppy at training. Over the next week, my dog started having trouble getting in and out of my car. He was unsteady on his feet and unsure of himself. In the meantime his gentle and sweet demeanor was changing. He was ornery and irritable -- and it didn't come across like normal puppy changes.
My puppy continued to have a few nights of hacking/dry heaving until one morning (3 am) he started vomiting bile. This happened about every hour, and stopped after about 4 hours. There was no blood. The next morning, after I had scheduled an appointment to see the vet that day, my puppy lost his footing and fell. He tried to regain his footing a few times and was unable, eventually collapsing on the floor and shaking. I took him to the vet right then. They evaluated him and were concerned, but didn't know what to make of it. They treated him with something to help with growing pains, and said to keep them posted.
A few days later, a friend mentioned about Nutro's history of recalls. I started reading. When I started reading reviews that mimicked my pups symptoms, I immediately went to my locally-owned pet store (who doesn't carry Nutro because of its issues, I found out) and picked up a food known for its purity from a family-owned and operated company who demonstrates complete transparency with its products. I also replaced his treats (made by Nutro) and his Greenies (made by Nutro).
After 24 hours on the new food, my boy's demeanor has improved remarkably. He hasn't vomited, dry heaved, or fallen since the switch. He's still a little unsteady on the steps, but I expect it will take some time to fully resolve. His personality is almost back to normal for a gentle giant. Just stay away. It's not worth it. Oh, and the new food I started -- Fromm -- is equivalent in price.

I began feeding my healthy 2-yr old golden retriever Natural Choice Lamb & Rice at the end of July 2014. He began to get runny eyes soon after he started eating this food, and within 3 weeks, he was vomiting bile and convulsing, staggering, loss of muscle control, and drooling a few times a week for no apparent reason. From September 2014 till Jan 20th, 2015 (when it occurred to me there must be some sort of toxin build up in his body), he would suddenly want out, run back and forth retching and staggering until he threw up yellow bile and fell over. I took videos and showed it to a veterinary cardiologist and two neurologists, both said they hadn't seen heart disease or epilepsy present like that, i.e. preceded with vomiting. My regular vet could find nothing wrong with Boon's blood work or on his physical exam. It occurred to me maybe it was his diet, as these symptoms began shortly after starting Nutro NC food.
So after his last barf/collapse on Jan 20th, I switched him from Nutro NC to Fromm GOLD, same price range, still contains some grains, etc. I doubt this was a coincidence -- immediately after we took him off Natural Choice, the vomiting stopped, his eyes stopped running. It has been 9.5 weeks now and not a single retch or collapse from Boon. I contacted Nutro and the vendor of the dog food a month ago, but apparently they do not care about the effect their food had on my pet. I strongly advise anyone who has their dog on this food to SWITCH immediately -- it may take a while for symptoms to show, but why wait that long? He went from 2-3 episodes a week on Nutro to NONE WHATSOEVER for the last 10 weeks on FROMM Gold. That speaks volumes to me. I was lucky to find the solution myself, before spending thousands on Veterinary diagnostics. Take heed, dog owners.... your pet could be next.

But then I was reading more about cats and realized I should be feeding them more protein and less carbs so I researched many cat foods.
I came up with Nutro dry food (and some wet food once a day) and have been feeding them this for 5 months or more. When friends come over they comment on how very soft and silky our cats' fur are, and I didn't realize it at first, but it was directly due to the Nutro cat food since that's the only change we made. If the outside of the cat is healthier then the inside of the cat must be healthier too.
I guess seeing mixed reviews on many cat food sites, I would imagine not all food reacts the same in all cats. You just have to start with the good stuff and see what happens. People have different reactions to different foods too so they stay away from food that makes them sick. Even Nutro has different kinds to try if one doesn't work for you.

It is yellow, frothy, bilious, foul smelling, large quantity projectile vomiting. It wakes him out of a sleep. We noticed that he had stopped wanting to eat, so we thought he had a stomach issue and gave him just boiled plain skinless, boneless chicken and white rice for a few days and he had NO vomiting or diarrhea. So we thought that the "stomach bug" had cleared up. We went back to feeding him this food and he started having this random vomits and diarrhea.
So, we switch foods to Blue Buffalo and we have not had a single issue. Very concerned that something is in the Nutro Natural Choice that is causing dogs to get very sick. Not normal for so many different dogs, no matter the breed, to be experiencing these exact same described symptoms in a same span of time. Since the change, my male has started vomiting bile, occasionally at first then more recently 3-4 times in a day.
My female (who was never on Nutro before) is epileptic, always cautious with her health... watching out for high sodium (she is on Potassium Bromide). She began to lose her coordination, stumble, fell up stairs and afraid to go downstairs and could no longer jump into the back of my SUV. After my female's trip to the vet and numerous tests as well as my male's continued vomiting, we are having the food tested. Nothing like this happened before the changing of food... Stay away from Nutro.

I own 2 dogs (a yellow lab and Jack Russell). I have been feeding them Nutro dog food for the past 3-4 years and felt I was meeting their nutritional needs. Until this past month when my yellow lab started vomiting yellow frothy bile, but only in the early morning hours. She also has had bouts of diarrhea throughout the day for the past 2 weeks. After reading some of the other concerns by other pet owners I felt there could be a larger problem and not just related to my one dog. Hence, I no longer am using Nutro foods!! As it is, I had to have a 3rd dog (chocolate lab) put down last Summer due to liver and spleen failure of unknown reason. I wonder now if it was the Nutro dog food!!!

I worked at a pet company long time ago. Back then a lot of these new natural foods did not exist yet. I have fed my dog Nutro dry chicken, with no problems. She lived to be almost 16 years old and only had arthritis. No health problems with her. I then had two cats. Gave them both Nutro dry cat food. They both lived to be 14-15 and again no problems. Just spewing up hair balls. Now I have a black lab mix. She is now turning 3 years in April. I have had some vomit with her but not just on the dog food alone. She has eaten sticks, grass, string and plastic from toys. She would sometimes have very small amounts of human food, but has thrown them up too.
We do not give her any human food anymore except for an occasional cracker. I have never had a problem with the chicken rice dry formula before with all my pets. Some dogs stomachs may just not like certain foods. But I will NEVER trust a regular-generic dog food company. No matter what they say, they will never have your pets best interest at heart. Byproducts, leftovers, bone/corn meal, artificial preserve-colors-flavors, glutens, animal fat, animal digest (chemicals). NOT for me or my dog!!

We had fed Nutro to our 12 year old Schnauzer since he was a puppy. Occasionally, he would become distressed and vomit yellow foam. However, with the last bag we fed him, he became lethargic and suffered joint pain. He began having seizures and looked like he had aged 5 years. After taking him to the vet, we found out his liver enzymes were elevated. The vet put him on Denamarin but didn't ask, or mention in any way, what we were feeding him. After reading the complaints about Nutro on the Consumer Affairs website and an article from Life Extension about dog food in general, we immediately changed his food.
We found healthy, easy to make, recipes online and began feeding him these healthy dinners. He showed immediate results within one day, at first more energy and now his joint pain is gone. He is recovering nicely and it's very apparent that he feels better. We will never purchase commercial pet food again. He's our little buddy, he can have fresh meals just like us. We were deceived into thinking we were doing something good for our dog, but we were inadvertently killing him.

Her diet has been the same for almost 2 years (using another brand of food). The only differences were these treats, and (2) times now, within 1-2 hours after having a single treat, she became very ill! This last time she became so ill it required a vet visit. I do not know what they did to change the formula to their various types of dog food, but it is obvious that it is harmful to our loved ones so please change your brand of dog food immediately as I am, and tell your retailer to remove this product from their shelves so no other dogs and cats are affected.

First, I want to send my condolences to those whose pets died from this terrible food. I am so sorry. I’m also exhausted, got back from the ER vet at 2:00 a.m. this morn and am now at work. I started buying food at the specialty dog food store last fall because my dog refused to eat another brand I had purchased (Blue) and I found this site with others experiencing the same. Prior to that brand, I was feeding my dog Nutro (Ultra). I've been feeding my pets Nutro products since the 80’s when I was in elementary school. After the experience with Blue, I became suspicious of all the Petsmart brands. Even the ones that were considered high end, I realized really were not, and I wanted to purchase food that didn't have ingredients sourced in China.
So off to the specialty dog food store I went, and began to purchase food they recommended from companies with stringent standards. Problem is, those stores are not as convenient as heading to Petsmart so when my dog ran out of food this past Wednesday evening, I popped into Petsmart and picked up a $15 bag of Nutro to tide her over for ONE day. Thursday morning she began vomiting copious amounts of mucous-y, yellow bile foam almost every hour. I’m not one to freak out over vomiting, but by 4:00 p.m. it hadn't stopped. I've never cleaned up so much vomit in my life. I took her to the vet at 4:30 and he said she was probably upset because of the food and gave her some meds. Came home, and tried to feed her a bit of oatmeal. She continued to vomit regularly. By 10:00 p.m., she was still vomiting and so I got online and found these similar stories. That’s when I got nervous.
At, this point I figured I should maybe take her to the ER vet. As, my family member and I were discussing it, she vomited again. That was all we needed to see and off we went to the ER vet. She had a fever and received some nausea meds and penicillin. Luckily her blood work came back fine, and she is at home recuperating. As stated, I’m at work right now, but someone will be checking on her and the vomiting has appeared to cease. I cannot imagine what would have happened if she ate multiple meals of that crap.
Coincidentally, when I returned the bag at Petsmart, a lady in front of me was buying the same stuff. I asked her if she fed her dogs that and she said no, that she was buying a bag to tide her over until she gets to the specialty dog food store. I quickly told her what happened and she put that bag down fast. We happen to shop at the same specialty dog food store. I can’t help but wonder if that timing saved her dog in some fashion.
We can’t depend on brand loyalty any longer, folks. These companies are being bought & sold, formulas and ingredient sourcing being changed. The bottom line is they want to save $, and China serves them well for that at our expense. And it’s not just our pets, I suspect we will start losing humans as well (I’m sure it’s already happened), to these inferior ingredients in food, supplements and personal care products. Yes, the specialty food is very expensive, but I spent $500 yesterday off of one serving of dinner (poison if you ask me) to my sweet, 10 year-old German Shorthaired Pointer. If I had the money and the time, and had discovered this forum prior to returning the food, I would have had the food analyzed. Best of luck, and again I am so sorry to those of you who lost your pets.

I have been buying Nutro Natural Choice for large breeds for over a year, but last week I bought a bag of Nutro natural choice small bites lamb and whole brown rice formula because Petco was out of stock of the large breed bags. Immediately after feeding my two dogs (both 5 years old) the new bag of dog food, they both began vomiting extensively throwing up dog food mixed with yellow bile numerous times during the day and night. Both dogs became listless and seemed to be getting sicker. My daughter suggested that I change their food, so I took up the dog food and replaced it with homemade chicken and rice.
After doing this, both dogs stopped vomiting, and their energy levels were back to normal on the second day. I am sure that the bag of Nutro natural choice that I bought contains toxic ingredients that were killing my dogs. I returned the bag to Petco, but kept a sample for future analysis. I also have the lot numbers from the bag and the store receipt. I informed Nutro, but have yet to hear back from them. I am concerned about what may happen to other dogs that eat this food.

My poor girl developed bad stools and skin rashes around her mouth and itching all over. It took about an hour after feeding and her rash broke out and she didn't stop scratching herself. I decided to eliminate Nutro from her daily diet and within a few days the rash was getting so much better. My dog has had issues with throwing up yellow bile but that has stopped. As of recently, she has lost a significant amount of hair on her back and the skin looks quite irritated. In November of 2014, she stopped running up and down the stairs, jumping on the couch, or jumping in general which is quite the opposite of her. She used to be full of energy and played all day long. Shortly after, I found blood on her stool and she no longer wanted to eat Nutro (she has never rejected food in all her 8 years of life!!). After researching Nutro dog food, I found dog owners experiencing the same awful situation with their dogs.
I immediately stopped feeding her Nutro. I gave her a mix of lean chicken, brown rice and veggies that I steamed. Within 3 days - yes that's 3 days - she was back to herself. No bloody stools, no diarrhea, no Vomiting, no limping. It has been weeks now and she has not displayed a single one of those symptoms. She is back to her happy, playful, jumping on everything she can self. I have never written a bad review in my life, however, I have never felt so betrayed by a company in my life. I have a 3.5 month Australian shepherd mix from a local rescue organization. We went to pet smart to pick out puppy food. A Nutro representative was on site and met our new puppy and suggested to check out the Nutro products. We were impressed by how many "checks and tests the food passes" and the effects on coat and skin, etc., that we ended up purchasing the large bag of puppy food for large breeds. It's been a little over a month and feeding has been fine until this past week.
Four days ago he started having diarrhea and that first night continued to have diarrhea (explosive) every 2 hours. Then the vomiting started.. Same Yellow color as in other people's comments. Diarrhea mostly has occurred at night and then I restricted food intake to calm his digestive tract and had appointment with vet today. No change in food, environment, no outside elements digested. I couldn't figure out why he was sick! Stool test came back negative, no pain in abdomen or when pressure applied, etc., so vet just chalked it up to upset stomach/stomach bug. We received science diet food and some medicine.
I decided to google puppy vomiting and found and clicked on this website regarding Nutro and was appalled. I can't believe they are still allowed to produce food. I am convinced this is his issue and will be returning the bag of food (small amount that's left) tomorrow. I feel so bad that we have unknowingly harmed our pets because of false advertising ultimately when we just want the best for them. Nutro should absolutely be held accountable and I will no longer purchase anything in connection to their brand.

The manager I dealt with was just as horrified as I was and she replaced my food with a different brand. This last Sunday, my infant was so ill that she couldn't process any of the food I had bought. I rushed her to the emergency room, and sure enough, she had a bacterial infection brought on by the poison food.
I have been trying to get Nutro Max to reimburse me for the vet bill, but they refuse to discuss the incident with me. This is very sad and my little one is still not recovering. If she doesn't make it, I may pursue legal action. This is not right. We are the consumers who bought this product with the belief that there are safety standards put in place to protect our animals. This is where commerce and greed really dominate. My heart breaks for anyone who has lost a pet because of this company and its products.

Two weeks ago, I decided to switch the food for my two chihuahuas, and get something natural instead of the Walmart dog food. Nutro seemed like a very good option, and I got the "chicken, whole brown rice and oatmeal" dry food formula for small breeds. Both my dogs seem to like that food for the first couple of days. I bought the food on the Saturday, and it took less than 3 days for them to suffer from diarrhea. They would not eat anymore. On Tuesday, so only 3 days after I had switched to Nutro, Cappuccino (one of my dogs) started having spasms. They would not each much anymore, and now 2 weeks later, they don't want that food AT ALL. Cappuccino's spasms became worse so I took him to the vet yesterday. Stitch (the other dog) seems to be doing OK, but after the diarrhea, they now both suffer from constipation.
The vet was really clueless, he confirmed Cappuccino is a healthy little dog with good heart and lungs. So he did a blood test. Result: LIVER problems. I did not think of Nutro at the time. He couldn't tell if it was temporary or not (hypothyroidism was a possibility, but it does not suddenly appear within 3 days). Cappuccino is now on antibiotics for 10 days, and after that, we will see. I have been a long time supporter of Nutro, since the 90s. I have raised all of my rescued poodle, poodle/terrier mixes on Nutro and they all did amazing and lived long lives. In fact one made it to 22 years! So it greatly saddens me that I am now questioning this brand. I currently have two rescued terrier mixes. I have had them since 2009 and put them on Nutro dry kibble immediately. No problems. More recently one or the other would randomly throw up but not enough to cause concern (I figured they had just gotten over excited).
I added to my family with a new rescued terrier September 2014 and naturally got her on the same Nutro kibble. In about a month, she started throwing up stomach bile. Maybe once a week, sometimes twice. Sometimes one of the other terriers would do it. The newest terrier, her episodes greatly increased and I became very worried. My vet had me deworm her again (she was dewormed before the rescue group let me take her home) but it did not change a thing. (We did not find any worms, but dewormed her just to be sure). Then my vet had me try snacks at bedtime and even Pepcid AC, a low dose with a snack at night, but my little girl still would wretch up stomach bile two to three times a week.
My vet is taking X-rays and such when I decided last week on a whim to buy a different brand bag of dog food.... Not a single dog in my house has thrown up since. And today I Googled "Nutro and..." and "Nutro and Vomiting" popped right up. I never even would have thought it. I was assuming that maybe my newest rescue had a food allergy.... all of these posts illustrate that something else is clearly going on with my formally most favorite brand of dog food. They just lost a very loyal customer. It is a shame. It was a great product.

In late August we recently bought a new bag of Nutro dog food. She lost interest in eating. She threw up a few times and became very lethargic. The vet tested her blood, urine, did x-rays, Lyme's panel and test results all looked ok. We were so worried about her and it’s heartbreaking to see your dog so sick. She developed signs of ataxia and fever. She was treated with 2 antibiotics and pain meds. The vet could not diagnose her condition- it only led to more questions.
She was tested for multiple diseases, everything was negative. Only 9 days had passed and her symptoms progressively worsened. On September 7th she tragically died of an unknown illness. Our family was devastated. She was our "soul dog" and a cherished member of our family. Is her sudden death linked to this dog food? I don't know for sure. Our 7 1/2 year old Great Dane (Dexter) was always healthy until the summer of 2013 when we noticed he started turning down his nose at his food, (Nutro Lamb & Rice) and would eat grass after his meal and throw it up afterwards. We thought it was due to the vet changing his food to senior so he wouldn't get so much protein which is bad for dogs that are older. She couldn't find anything wrong with him and said to just watch him for now. She put him on stomach meds but he just didn't seem that much better that summer. In Sept, we took him back to the vet and she still said he looked and sounded fine. In Oct, we did blood work but nothing showed up.
In Nov he really started going downhill with constant throwing up, uncontrolled bowl movements, lethargic actions, and a moaning like he just felt bad. I could not take it anymore and we took him to vet on Sat. She did an ultrasound and said he had some masses on his lungs and heart that seemed to be the problem. We had to say good-bye that day and still ask ourselves the question of was it the food we fed him that caused all this. Could the food contents at that time be what took our Dexter from us. Up to that point before we changed his food to Nutro Senior, he was very active and healthy. Dexter went everywhere with us, even won 1st prize at the Cardinals "Dog Parade" and walked in all the parades in town. Could there be something in Nutro's Food that would cause an active and healthy dog to become so sick in such a short period of time? We hope the answer is found soon so no one has to lose their precious pet like us.

I have been feeding Nutro Natural Choice to all of my pets (dogs, cats and a prairie dog) since I got my first dog in 1992. I've had an Australian Terrier, Boxer Mix, Pit Mix, German Shepherd, Miniature Pinscher, APBT, Border Collie Mix, Golden Retriever, Silky Terrier, English Bulldog and currently have a King Shepherd and Yorkie, 3 cats and a prairie dog. Every last one of them solely ate Nutro Natural Choice of one form or another (generally lamb and rice varieties or weight management). None of them ever had a health issue other than the one some of them were adopted WITH (epilepsy, arthritis, Spike's disease etc.). I highly recommend Nutro Natural Choice to everyone, but I cannot speak for Nutro's other brands. I find it crazy that I've had 16 pets on this food with no issues yet people get one pet that has diarrhea and they blame the food.

After reading the complaints spanning back many months, I am now 100% convinced that Nutro Ultra canned puppy food has made my dog Autumn sick. Like many others, she has developed diarrhea with blood, has vomited bile numerous times every day, and has lost a great deal of weight in the past few months despite feeding her the right amount of food. She's become lethargic as well. On her last visit to the vet they did a complete blood work up and tested for parasites...all came back fine, leaving my vet at a loss as to what is causing the problem. I plan to take her in on Monday armed with all of these complaints printed out, a can of food, and I will be requesting a tox screen and ultrasound of her abdomen to see if she has developed pancreatitis as so many seem to have developed. I refuse to feed her another ounce of this food and will instead switch to a bland diet that I prepare myself. This food is poisoning our fur babies and needs to be removed from the market!

I have a 4 yr old German shepherd...for years we have been feeding her blue wilderness dog food and she has been extremely healthy. Last month I was at a different store and remembered I need some dog food. I saw that the nutro large breed food was on sale (rebate), looked like quality food and was about what I normally pay before the rebate. Our shepherd Misty seemed to eat it fine, after about one week she started vomiting blood, rushed to the ER, the vet thought she may have ate something...possibly outside. $622, for x-rays and medicine...and put her on a chicken and rice diet starting the next day for a week. She seemed great again.
So I began her back on the nutro food and have been watching her closely when outside...1 weeks later and she starts throwing up blood again....back to chicken and rice and it stops. I found out that the food was causing the problems...I will never buy another product from them nor will I recommend their food to anyone else. Unfortunately I sent the receipt in for the rebate and can't return the product...or provide if for this review. It is sad a company can get away with selling food that can kill family members.

We have been feeding our 8-month-old German Shepherd Mix Nutro Ultra Large Breed Puppy Food for the last 6 months. Initially we were feeding her the small bags that we purchased at Pet Supermarket with no problems at all. We decided to buy the largest bag to save money a couple of months ago and bought an expensive airtight container for the dog food. Right away she started to refuse the dog food and vomited bile 2 times in a week in the middle of the night. We started to add the Nutro Ultra wet puppy food to the food to entice her to eat it. However, she started to have really horrible smelling gas and now is having runny stools at least 4 times a week. My husband thought it was due to the wet food we were adding but now I am concerned it might be the large bags that we bought (one bag at Petsmart and one at Petco). I am going to throw out the 55 dollars worth of dry pet food tomorrow. I just threw out the receipt too. Why chance her getting even sicker?

Please don't feed this to your dog!!! We gave this to our 10-week old 4-pound puppy, mixed with the food she was used to. The first day on Nutro she was puking after eating it...figured it was just the transition. Then the 2nd day she was still puking and also having the worst diarrhea I've ever seen in a dog (literally liquid projectile squirting). At this point she had stopped eating and drinking altogether. She would not eat even her favorite foods or drink water. We just figured she had gotten a virus; we didn't even think it could be the food, especially seeing that it was an "expensive" brand. Once her system was empty she started puking bile, having clear diarrhea (water), and dry heaving...every 30 minutes. After 3 days we finally got her in to a vet. The vet kept her for the day and immediately gave her an IV and a weeks worth of antibiotics. I believe my puppy would have died had we not been able to get her in so quickly. I know it was the Nutro; she has her shots, tested negative for Parvo, and had never left our house. We switched to Wellness and haven't had any more problems.

A week ago we bought a new bag of nutro, my dog would not eat it. I assumed he was bored with it, he would eat Rachael Rays but not the nutro. Then 4 days ago he stopped eating all together. After a stomach ultrasound today, he has an enlarged pancreas and knots on his liver. After telling friends and family we are going to most likely lose our smallest member, a few people asked about his dog food. It was a couple of dollars more than what I previously used, Taste Of The Wild, which my dog enjoyed and he had a healthy stool from. My German shepherd, Schultz, turned his nose up at Nutro at first - which was strange because he is a hearty eater. If you put it in front of him and he eats it - but with Nitro I had to entice him to eat. That was Sunday. By Monday overnight (Tues. at 4:30 a.m.), he was vomiting. Let him out to clean up the mess and checked on him and he had a very soft stool. (Now that could be because of a sudden food change, but not the vomiting). My dog has always had a sensitive stomach. I researched the best food and found Nutro highly recommended. In the beginning he was on Nutro potato/venison. It seems he does best on venison. I started the product this past July. He would vomit bile occasionally but had diarrhea often. Since he is known for diarrhea I never thought anything about it. In September Nutro changed their recipe and I started him on Venison/brown rice. He has vomited bile daily. I researched and thought I just needed to feed him as close to bedtime as possible because dogs on an empty stomach tend to vomit bile. Then a week ago he started a cough. I was thinking heart issues because lately I had noticed he was very fatigued after only a short time playing fetch outside.
My dog is only two years old. He has never really taken to this pet food and so I've always doctored his food with other yummy things to entice him. I feel so bad that my dog is sick. To think I thought I was buying the best I could afford and to find out that the dog food is making him sick hurts my heart. On Sunday I am taking him to the vet and will know then if he has to be put down. It is a hard lesson to learn. I am not sure if it is too late for him but I do know my next dog will never be fed anything unless I make it in my kitchen. I no longer have faith in the dog food companies. In October of 2014 I discovered Nutro Natural Choice Toy Breed formula. Until then, I had been feeding him a natural diet of soft veggies and oatmeal. He seemed to tolerate the Nutro but wasn't actually eating much on a daily basis. Then we had a family crisis and I was unable to hand feed him his veggies and oatmeal as usual so he ate more of the dog food that was left in the bowl for him while we were away. He began sleeping a lot and drinking less which is unusual for a 1 year old puppy. I thought maybe he had just gotten a bit lazy. Then he began vomiting and having diarrhea several times a day.
He got to the point that he would do nothing but lie on is bed. He wet and soiled himself because he was so weak and shaky he couldn't walk. We took him to the vet and within a matter of days from beginning to end, his body had nearly completely shut down. I had no idea that he was being poisoned from what was supposed to be "good quality food." This company should be shut down. They have been fine for yrs and I take pride in the fact that I feed my dogs a "quality" food. Something must have changed in their processing as last this past Sunday my neighbor noticed my female pug stumbling in the yard and laying in a pool of blood. We were not home at the time so they climbed our fence and rushed her to the vet. She was on the verge of death, low temp, low heart rate and a great deal of blood lost and in shock. Upon return, the 2nd pug was found to have blood on his back end also so the 2 males were rushed to the vet also. All 3 were diagnosed with pancreatitis. The only common denominator that could have caused this is whatever they ate. The only thing they ate was Nutro Ultra Small breed dog food.
My dogs were hospitalized and the 2 males were given IV, antibiotics and prescription dog food as well as other meds. They recovered well and were released the next day, the female had to have a plasma transfusion, IV, Glucose as well as extensive meds and 6 days later is finally returning to normal although still low energy considering all she has been through. She was barely hanging on for a couple days.
Please stop feeding your dog any Nutro product as they are tainted somehow. We are $5000 deep into vet bills and they are still adding up. I am bringing the food in to have it tested as I want there to be no mistake and I am sending results to the FDA. They need to stop whatever is going on with this food before it kills more dogs. If it hadn't been for my neighbor noticing my dog stumbling, I would have lost her and maybe the other two also. Nutro SLOWLY KILLED MY DOG and after doing research there has been many other cases. I feel so guilty and heartbroken that I slowly killed my dog feeding him this and I want to bring it to light and bring some justice and meaning to his death. PLEASE help me save other people's pets and share this story. Do not feed your dogs The Nutro Company brand of food. I recently had to put my 4 year old doberman down from being poisoned by this food! After many tests and days in the vet's office and thousands of dollars later with NO ANSWERS.
I had googled to the ends of the earth trying to figure out what the problem was and never thought it could be the food as I had another perfectly healthy puppy on it. The symptoms my dog was experiencing included liquid diarrhea, Yellow Bile vomit, extreme lethargy, blood in urine, blood in stool, constant shakes, convulsing, no energy, extreme weight loss, dandruff, eye goop. We went to multiple vets multiple times and I spent thousands of dollars. This went on for about 8 months until I ran out of money and could no longer watch my poor dog suffer.
At one point he laid in my bed for 30 hours straight, I had to bring water to the bed and carry him outside to go to the bathroom. He went from 120lbs to 80llbs in less than a year! Much like everyone else who wrote a comment, all of my vet tests (Blood tests, stool sample urine tests, X-rays, Ultrasounds) ALL came back normal?! SO how could my dog still be in such awful condition?! We thought it was the water, I started giving him bottled water! I never thought it could have possibly been the food because I had a healthy Great Dane puppy eating the same food?
That was until Today. I was sitting in my kitchen in the silence working on the computer when I could distinctly hear (because it was so quiet) my Great Dane and NEW Husky puppies tummies rumbling uncontrollably... Both of them have been experiencing very liquid poops and the puppy has been throwing up YELLOW BILE obviously because I just went through this and had seen these symptoms before. Automatically I realized that it wasn't my doberman who was sick, it was what I was feeding them! I am so sad that it's too late for Diesel and I feel so guilty!
Once I started googling I found this site. I have read every single review and started doing my own research. I am going to have the food tested as well. You should all check out what it says on Wikipedia about how many time this brand has been recalled as well! I have blasted all over their facebook page. I realize most of the site is pure complaining and bad reviews but what stands out is that most of the brands have around 100-300 poor reviews whereas Nutro has almost 2000! So I started reading....and reading! What I found was so shocking and heartbreaking I honestly can't even wrap my mind around it at this point. Every review showed all of the same symptoms that Diesel had and that my other 2 were just starting to show, and some people even with the sad fate of having to say goodbye thinking it was a health issues and no answers from the vet before they found out the true problem. Everything matches to a T what I experienced. All I can do now is try and spread the word and share this story with as many people as I can and hopefully save some other pets from having the same sad fate that mine did.
I also want everyone to know that this brand advertises as a healthy brand and is sold in all HOLISTIC dog food stores and even when you read the ingredients on the bag (as I always do) nothing seems fishy at all. I've always been very aware to not buy junky low quality food (or so I thought). Even more than one vet that I saw read the ingredients on the bag and had nothing bad to say. Obviously there is something more going on here that they are not sharing with us. So let this be a lesson to all, I guess you really can't trust what they tell you is going into your food and it truly does pay off to do the research and not just trust what is put in front of you. I am so sorry and heartbroken that I didn't think to look into this more and I am determined to save as many pets as I can in hopes of bringing some meaning and reason to the death of a very special puppy.

I was feeding this to my 13 year old dog for the last 3 months and just recently went to restock on Nutro Lamb Senior canned food. 8 hours after opening and feeding 1/4 of the can to my 10lb dog, she became violently ill. She vomited yellow foam (bile) repeatedly almost every hour, and wouldn't drink or eat. I ended up forcing water into her with a baby medicine pipette (which is very dangerous because they can aspirate it into their lungs)! I was desperate because she was very dehydrated and my vet wasn't available. Immediately the next morning, I got her to the vet for Subcutaneous fluids, vomiting shot, antibiotic shot, and blood tests (the vet also gave me antibiotic pills to try the next day). Her liver enzymes were a little elevated on one sections (can't remember specifically which), but the vet said it was expected because she was sick and didn't suggest liver failure as the cause of her illness.
She seemed to recover over the week as I gave her the pills, but recently vomited yellow once yesterday. She's still eating and drinking, but becoming much more lethargic and I fear she's relapsing. I've been feeding her a bland diet of 93/7 hamburger boiled, drained, and added to rice with some pumpkin thrown in during her morning meal only. After a few days of that, I also introduced boiled carrots, peas, and a small amount of mashed sardine to get her all the vitamins she needs. I'm positive it was the canned food, but I have no means to prove it! I'm so angry and upset with myself because she's never been sick before in all of the 13 years I've had her! I've already contacted Nutro and they called to inquire about the can # and my vet, but I haven't heard anything else yet.

My 2 Boston Terriers are almost 5 years old and have been eating this brand & flavor for a couple years with no problems. I opened a new bag on October 13th and they didn't want to eat it. I thought they were just being picky. I basically forced them to eat it for 3 days until they absolutely refused to touch it. During those 3 days of them eating it they became lethargic, had very bad gas, and obvious intestinal discomfort. I followed them to inspect their poos & they were the foulest smelling things ever & were encased with slime. Then came the diarrhea. I feel bad it took me 3 days to catch on but glad that it only took me 3 days to catch on. I went to the bag and smelled it. It smelled nasty when I put my face down in the bag. The expiration date on the bag said June 2015.
When I called Nutro, they were very flippant about it. They said it was fine when it left their plant in TN so it must have spoiled during shipping. WHAT?! The rep said just take it back to Petsmart & get one with a different lot number. Are you kidding me? I kept samples and returned the bag for a refund. Since Nutro is denying all responsibility and trying to put it on the shipper, why don't they just go ahead and try to say I caused it to spoil? Seems where this whole thing is going. What a load of **. For those of you who didn't know (like myself until today) Nutro dog food is a MARS company. That's right, candy bars. Research them. You might change what you buy & eat yourself!
I realize the $1000 I was spending with them per year is just chump change and will in no way affect them. My goal here is to let others be aware of what happened to my dogs so maybe it won't happen to yours. I'm luckier than others have been. My dogs didn't die from their tainted food.

Decided to "upgrade" my cats food from Purina One sensitive systems to Nutro Max Cat. Cat ate for the first time, within 10 minutes he threw up really bad. He then was out of it and couldn't stand, actually fell over. He spent the night in the vet's last night and appears to be okay today. Thank goodness. What is in this stuff?

My little Dachshund-Pommie cross, Kujo became very ill on Sunday, October 19, 2014, although he started showing signs of distress about the same time we opened up a bag of NUTRO "Natural Choice Adult Small Bites." He's been at the vet all this week - had a 105 fever, liver enzymes off the charts, enlarged liver, enlarged heart and fluid on lungs. He's 9, and was active and lively until this illness occurred. Would not have suspected the food until a second dog, Misty, started vomiting yesterday (4 times). She vomited again this morning so to the vet she went for testing, monitoring and treatment as needed.
Her symptoms are similar to those reported by other pet owners with complaints about NUTRO. Internet research of NUTRO brands provided information regarding a 2008 recall. Further research led me to this site, Consumeraffairs.com, which contains numerous complaints about the various NUTRO brands causing illness in pets through today, October 23, 2014. I am planning on submitted the food to an independent certified lab for testing. My next steps will depend upon the results of testing.

We bought this dog food. We bought our dog Nutro Ultra Gluten-Free Small Breed Adult Chicken, Potato & Peas Recipe Dry Dog Food By Nutro Ultra, thinking it would help our 8 year cockapoo be more active. She was starting to be less active and playful. So we gradually gave her this food mixed with her Ol' Roy dog food for 5 or 6 days. She seemed to perk up and be more playful, but now the last few days she has had soft poop. She has pooped in the house several times, she never does that!!! Then today she has had runny poop, and tonight it was blood mixed in it. I gave her a Pepto tablet mashed up with bread. We took her food away, she will not drink right now. I plan to take her to the vet in the morning. I have read story after story about this food causing these problems. I thought it would be good for her instead of the dog food she was eating, but now she is sick...

We have (had) 2 dogs a 14 year old rescue dog with health issues and 10 year old healthy German Shepherd. They both have been eating Nutro dog food for at least 5 years recently because my rescue dog was having some stomach issues. I was reading the bags and the small bites Lamb and brown rice food said it was good for that. They didnt get sick right away... then she started throwing up uncontrollably one night and in the morning she was really weak and throwing up blackish brown stuff. Took her to the vet. They thought she got into some poison of some kind... She had internal bleeding and we felt that she was too far gone........
A few days later our German Shepherd starting throwing up just the same as our other dog...that's when I thought there must be something wrong with the dog food. Looked online and saw this site. My heart broke..... Took our dog to the vet ...... She ended up staying there 2 nights intravenously feed and anti-vomiting and antibiotics, Science Diet can dog food for GI track... and now is eating Science Diet dry dog food and seems to be recovering. I have the remaining bad dog food and bag.

As I write this, our dog is in the ER for the 2nd time in two weeks with acute pancreatitis. Symptoms are vomiting, shaking, and weakness. We just began introducing Nutro back into his diet yesterday. NUTRO can make your dog very sick. Purchase a different dog food or go to a bland diet.

I recently had to switch to another brand of dog food when Purina discontinued the type I was using. Nutro Max was highly recommended by a man who said he'd been feeding it for years to his large dogs with great results. I have been feeding this since August and in the last month, both dogs have started vomiting yellow bile and having loose stools. They attack the grass every time they go outdoors and one of the dogs (with the more sensitive stomach) drools almost constantly. I almost lost this one to Iams, which is why I had switched before. I finally decided to check online and was totally shocked and dismayed to read these comments, especially after my previous experience. These same symptoms everyone is describing were also what I was seeing in my own dogs. I did all the expensive blood tests, etc before, but decided to skip the tests and just change the food this time. Tonight was the first meal off the Nutro, so I'm hopeful I've changed in time for my dogs. And I also hope I don't wake up to various areas of yellow bile vomit to be cleaned up in the morning.

I have had him on this since 6 weeks, no problems other than sometimes he seem bored with the taste. We gone through 2 big bags; however, he has came down with bowel problems... At first it was soft yellow mush... last night it is dark brown water after this 3rd bag we opened Friday... This is Monday morning, he is still sleeping. Figured I would google the food.... he does eat this third bag of food better.... which makes me think there is something different about it that doesn't agree with him... We are stopping it today.

We've been giving our 10-year-old beagle "Nutro small breed lamb & rice dog food" since he was a puppy. All has been fine up until the last few weeks when our beagle started having very loose stools and emitting unusually strong gas; very foul odor. Then, in the last couple of days, he refused to eat his food. We took him to the vet today and now have him on antibiotics and are starting a bland food regimen of 3 parts rice to 1 part chicken. Hopefully, he'll be fine but we are taking our remaining bag of Nutro dog food back to the pet store where we purchased it and lodging a complaint. Nutro must have put something new in this product or may have inadvertently tainted it. STOP GIVING YOUR DOG THIS FOOD!
UPDATED 03/02/2015: As painful as this is and with the goal of potentially helping others whose dogs may have gotten ill after eating Nutro small breed lamb & rice dog food in the Fall of 2014, I am taking the time to provide an update to information I posted to this site on October 11, 2014. Our family’s beloved beagle, almost 11, had to be put down by our veterinarian this past weekend. He had become increasingly ill since the fall when he initially started showing symptoms of a gastrointestinal illness that we believe may have been caused by a bad batch of Nutro small breed lamb & rice dog food. We had been giving our beagle this dog food since he was a puppy. All had been fine up until about mid-September 2014 when our beagle started having very loose stools and emitting unusually strong gas; a very foul odor. Then, he began refusing to eat his food.
We took him to our veterinarian in October 2014 and they put him on antibiotics and a bland food regimen of 3 parts rice to 1 part chicken. On this same day while doing some online research, we came across this site which detailed very similar symptoms stemming from Nutro dog food. The summary of our beloved family member’s story is that he never recovered from whatever triggered his illness in the Fall of 2014. He got progressively worse with a lack of appetite, loose stools, a consistently potent gas odor and towards the end- frequent vomiting, blood in his stools, dehydration and exhaustion. While we can’t bring our dog back, we can potentially help others.
If you feel that a Nutro Dog Food product has sickened your dog sometime over the last six months, contact Nutro Consumer Relations at 1-800-833-5330 and also post a complaint on their Facebook page (left side). Also, please know that Nutro will not investigate any complaints posted to this site because it’s a for-profit site not affiliated with any government agency. Yes, that’s what they told me in spite of the numerous complaints on this site.

Has Nutro Ultra changed any ingredient in the adult dog food? I've fed it to my two cockapoos for several years with good results. But since August (last three bags) both dogs developed soft runny yellow stools. Then vomiting and diarrhea. My four year old female got sick and began passing blood. Now after antibiotics and special diet they're back on Nutro Ultra and stool has not returned to normal. What has happened to the formula?

As soon as we changed to this dog food from Hills Science Diet large breed puppy formula, our dog started vomiting up a yellow substance. She did this a few times and then a few days later when I was feeding her 100% of Nutro she began to have yellow colored, loose stool. Obviously, this is a reaction to the Nutro food. This food should NOT be on the shelves at pet food stores. I have been feeding her boiled chicken and rice for the last few days and she is so much better and happier. I will never purchase their products again and I do not recommend that anyone else do so either.
