I have been feeding Ultra Nutro small breed for 3 years to my 3 yr old Mini Schnauzer and now to my new puppy. Well the last two weeks they have both experienced runny stools they act fine no fevers. Then I researched the food and found all of these complaints. Has the company even responded? I am switching them. I feel sick to my stomach about this and scared they could really get sick now. It has made me paranoid about even their snacks!!

Nutro natural choice lamb and rice large breed adult - I have a seven year old male golden retriever service dog that was raised on the same food and I was told I should keep him on it since it had worked so well with all the golden retrieves with no issues. So I have continued to feed it to him for five years now even the treats that match. After opening the most recent bad about three days into the bag, his stools started to get loose to the point of like almost melted soft serve ice cream. After a $450 visit to the vet, a massive a out of blood work which all came back fine, and special diet for a week and probiotics and other medicine his stool was near normal and then came time to start his regular diet. About day 2-3 the loose stool came back and now he is straight out has the runs and it smells sour. His energy has been fine but you can tell his stomach does not feel well. I am still in contact with the vet and the problem has yet to be resolved. I was just scanning the Internet for solutions and found this site. But he will not be getting the nutro again since I already contacted Petsmart manager who told me to bring what is left to the store.

My 15 year old Aussie cattle dog has now been sick for 3 weeks and after extensive testing has been ruled out for liver and spleen. I was talking with a friend who mentioned she has a dog that was doing the same thing last week. I asked what she fed hers and she said Nutro. I was like so am I! So I did the IV fluids and Pepcid and got mine back on track but my vet suspected something far more insidious. He finally started eating mild foods and was recovering a week ago when my GF accidentally fed him Nutro again. Started the process over with the vomiting and he was better again. Now yesterday he got into the food of my other dogs that were still on it without Sx. and he threw up the food again last night. I am taking all the food and quarantining it and holding it for inspection because though the other dogs aren't sick they are considerably younger and could probably eat a boot and be ok. I am warning all others to stay off the food if having Sx. and I will retain the remainder for any class actions against this company should I find out this food is indeed tainted.

We have an older small dog. We noticed 3 weeks after we began giving him ultra his seizures increased. We decided to take him off ultra and place him back on old food. His seizures have decreased. He went to having about 1 a month then with food change he was having 1 a day. We are not sure that ultra caused this but his symptoms resolved after changing good back to original.

We had switched food from Trader Joe’s to Nutro. For a while they were eating it. Our Chi wouldn't eat it at all. At 3 in the morning, our 17 year old JRT started throwing up and continued throwing up and then the diarrhea started. We finally took her to the vet and the blood work was perfect, blood of a 2 year old. They asked if we had given her anything new or she got into trash. She is not a trash dog. They gave her fluids and meds. The next day, our other JRT got the same symptoms. We googled the food and found all the complaints. We called our vet and they told us the food was the culprit. We called Petco and spammed Nutro's facebook page. Their reply, "We care about our pets too. Please contact our customer service." I have a friend who fed her dog Nutro and had the exact same reaction and another friend whose 2 dogs died from it, all within a few days of each other.

I started feeding my dog Nutro Lamb and Brown Rice Adult food in June. Shortly after that he started vomiting foamy bile a couple of days a week, then he started vomiting up all his food immediately after eating a couple of times also. I took him to the vet and he was put on 2 different medicines for his stomach. While on the medicine he seemed to be getting better, but once the medicine was done, the bile vomiting continued again and he made it his business every morning to go outside and eat grass like crazy, repeated by vomiting. He also experienced panting. This went on for 2 months. Also he showed no interest in eating or for his food. Then one day I googled Nutro food and I was so upset to see nearly 2000 complaints with other animals having the same issues. Needless to say I switched his food and immediately afterwards the vomiting stopped. Although he still showed no interest in eating, eventually he started to eat and getting back to his old self. I will never purchase Nutro food again.

My dog was sick for 2 months. Not sure what it was, she gets in to everything. German wirehaired pointer always in something, but my brother saw that there is something with his dog and we been using this dog food for years and he said that his dog was getting sick from the food. He was Vomiting Bile at least once a week and mine was also. I looked it up and read all the comments. It needs to be out there that the Nutro pet food is no good. I just went to the store and got Blue Buffalo for her. I hope she feels better about the new food, but I will never buy this Nutro again. Hope this works, to spread the word, to leave a comment and let people know that is going on...

Several years ago, I was feeding my 2 Chihuahuas Nutro dry food for years. My male dog started having problems including vomiting blood. He wouldn't eat. I took him to the vet who treated him for vomiting and gave him something to coat his stomach (they really didn't know what was causing it). He improved some, but then he would get bad again, symptoms would return after a week or so after stopping the medication. We tried the treatment again, and again he improved, but once off the meds he got worse again. He finally sent me to a specialist. He treated him with the same meds but for a longer period of time (I think 2 weeks instead of 1).
I wondered if it was the food I was feeding him, so I decided to change it. I switched to Blue Buffalo. I believe that the Nutro food might have made my dog sick. My Chihuahua is now almost 13 years old and he's doing pretty good despite his aging ailments such as heart murmur. Soon after I switched his food, he started getting energy, acting normal and happy again. He's always been a picky eater and has had issues with foods. Blue Buffalo Basics and even their other varieties that I've tried are awesome. They've done wonders for my dogs. I spoil them and want to give them the best nutrition I can.
Years later, I also became aware of the recall that Nutro had when all those dogs were dying from tainted dog food. I was so concerned that I had given my dogs Nutro all those years. I just hope that the food I use now won't have problems like others have in the past, with food being tainted, etc.

Unfortunately our dog died and now after looking at all the reviews I'm sure it was the dog food.

I noticed since giving this poor quality, cheaper brand food to my 3 cats, my older 7 year old cat has been throwing up a lot. I should have known better. Being an investigative researcher for over 14 years into the fraudulent modern medical system and pet foods industry, I knew many pet food companies use rendered recycled, euthanized cats and dog's from animal hospitals mixed with restaurant scrap meats to increase their profits without any moral conscience about the health of pets. Prepare to be horrified! Google search this heading: Pet foods made with rendered euthanized cats and dogs.

My dog has also been experiencing diarrhea for several days. I recently purchased a new bag of Senior food from Petco. I decided to go online to see if a recall was in effect, as I have had nothing but good experience since I began feeding my lab Nutro (after the Iams scare). I am steaming her some brown rice as I type and I plan to contact Petco in the morning to return this food.

I was put on to Nutro by a Nutro representative at Petco over a few months ago. They vouched for the quality of the food and its benefits on skin and coat. My Dogue De bordeaux has some thyroid issue that affect his coat so I figured it was a solid move. Months went by and I began to vouch for the affects of the food on my dog's skin and coat. A week ago his few bags ran out and I switch from the Chicken Flavor... to lamb flavor. For the next few days my dog had diarrhea, panting, etc. non stop. 140-lb dogue having diarrhea is not a pretty sight with bleeding included. I eliminated new treats, milkbones, even his daily medicine. It came down to the food. As soon as I switched to plain rice and chicken the diarrhea stopped. I randomly decided to google it and here it all is... Over 1500 complaints all similar to mine. This is absolutely disgusting that a company would put out a product like this and charge the prices they pay. Hopefully Petco won't give me any trouble issuing a refund tomorrow. Next time I'll have the Nutro Rep come clean my dog's diarrhea after I work all day.

I was feeding my 11 year old Jack Russell Nutro Ultra Senior for a few months because I thought I was giving her a better quality food and researching. We had no problems until I bought a new bag on August 11th and notice some diarrhea, but then come this last Sunday the diarrhea was explosive and she started throwing up. Took her food away and started her on a bland diet of ground turkey and rice. She seemed to be getting better, but woke up Wednesday morning to find she had thrown up 3 times on the stairs and now bloody diarrhea all over our downstairs. Took her to the vet, fecal came back fine, blood work fine and x-rays fine. I mentioned to the vet that I just bought a new bag of Nutro Ultra Senior dog food, she said to throw it out.
I started to research to see if there were any Nutro recalls and come across this site and found that over the past few months many dogs just like my Molly have had the same exact symptoms. I was and still am so angry at Nutro. Instead of throwing away the food I brought it back to PetsMart and made them aware of what just happened with my dog, they refunded my money. I kept a small bag of the food because I want to get it tested and will be calling Nutro. My dog is now home after an expensive visit to the vet, on two medications (Metronidazole & Famotidine) and a bland diet of canned I/D Science Diet for the next week. She's a tough cookie and I am praying she will be fine, but have read some other dogs were not. There is something wrong with the past few months and probably current Nutro dog foods.

OMG!!! I can't believe this. I have been feeding my buddy Ultra Small Breed for close to 5 years now. I didn't mind paying more at the pet store for this brand because I thought I was giving him one of the best on the market. Over the past two weeks, my dog has had issues with diarrhea, vomiting and when I saw bloody stools, I freaked. He wouldn't leave my side and was very lethargic. Took him to the vet. Blood work came back fine. Stool sample came back fine. Vet put him on antibiotic, which he is just finishing, and beef and rice diet. He is gradually improving but I thought I would research online other food options with probiotics. I could not believe my eyes when I landed on this link and read all the horrible reviews. I never even considered it could be an issue with his food!
I am at a loss! I have no idea what to feed him now. All the brands seem the same to me. I don't have much experience with this. Could anyone suggest alternative reputable brands? He is a toy poodle, 9 lbs. 8 years old and acts like he is a puppy, which everyone thinks he is. I feel just awful!! Also, I mixed my dry food with a little bit of wet just to make it easier for him to eat. Should I be doing this? This is my first dog, a rescue, and I want to do my very best for him. He was in bad shape when I got him and had been doing so great. Thank you for all suggestions.

We began feeding our dogs Nutro Ultra dry dog food 3 years ago when our Chow was 11 years old and our Husky mix was just months old. Our Chow had GI issues her entire life. I had tried multiple different dog foods throughout her life but nothing helped. I wish I had found Nutro Ultra sooner because since I started feeding her this food, all of her GI issues have gone away and, at 14 years of age, she seems happier and healthier than ever. Our younger dog has only been on Nutro so I have nothing else to compare it to for him, but I can say that he has grown to a muscular 70 lb pup who loves to go on long trail runs and mountain bike rides with us. His coat is shiny and healthy. We love this dog food brand and will not switch. I am very surprised by all the negative reviews.

Recently we had a beloved furbaby pass away after being sick for several weeks. I've been doing research to make sure the same thing didn't happen to our other cat, and I came across these reviews. My cat was suffering from many of the symptoms the rest of you have posted about. I did a bit of snooping, and there's an ingredient called L-Carnitine that Nutro, for whatever reason, decided to add to its formula this past year. It's in many of both their cat and dog food products, and is advertised in their 'MAX Indoor Cat Weight Control Formula' as 'help burn fat and decreased levels of fat to help your cat maintain a healthy weight.' Nutro is intentionally poisoning our pets, and we are being made fools of by paying them to do so. If any of you would like to start a class action lawsuit, I will gladly sign up to support it.

I’m super concerned about my 2 dachshunds. All week they have been throwing up and getting diarrhea on and off. On one occasion the diarrhea was very bloody. They have been eating this food for years but recently I started noticing that they're throwing up more often than I would like them to. My dogs have never been finicky eaters but this week they don't even want to look at their food and are being lethargic. I wasn't expecting to find this many complaints and now I'm even more concerned. I will stop giving them this food immediately and will definitely follow up with my vet. Good luck out there and if your dog has been throwing up this week or has diarrhea stay away from Nutro!!

After being a long time buyer of Nutro venison and sweet potato LID, Nutro discontinued that line and changed to a Venison high protein line. I decided to give it a try since they loved the other one. In a matter of a couple of feedings, my pug developed diarrhea, lost of appetite, etc. Not long after that, my 12-year-old pekingese developed the same symptoms. After reading these posts with other dogs having the same symptoms, I definitely believe there is something wrong with their food and it should be made public before pets get too seriously ill and die. I will no longer be purchasing this brand. We switched to Natural Balance.

She has been eating Nutro Ultra for about a year with no problems until we recently purchased a new bag of it from Petco. After she ate her first bowl of it from the new bag, she began to vomit over and over until yellow foam started coming up. Then the diarrhea started, every 20 to 30 minutes, until the diarrhea began to come out Bloody. Then we took her to the Veterinarian. He treated her with several antibiotics including Flagyl, which she was on for 5 days. The bill for the Vet was $265.00. She is now recovering and is still on a light diet, Not with Nutro brand food!

I've been feeding my dog (Rottie / boxer mix) Nutro Natural Choice for large breed seniors for a number of years. In the last few months, he has been refusing to eat (but is still hungry), has had yellowish soft stools, has vomited (he's puked twice in 9 years - that's it!), and has had the worst tummy grumbles and gas I've ever seen in a dog. I brought him to the vet and aside from losing weight, he's fine after a blood work up. I called Nutro and asked if there was something going on with the food - they said no. My Dachschunds are periodically sick from their stomach. Throwing up, and diarrhea are common with them. We put them on natural pumpkin with their dry dog food. They have been on Nutro since they were born. We thought this was a problem with Dachshunds. However, this week, our 10-lb. Mini Dachshund became very ill. He started throwing up his food and had runny stool. He was very lethargic. That night, he was really hot. He had a fever and we took him to the vet the next day. After x-rays, sonogram and blood work, the result was that he had an enlarged spleen, low platelets and low red blood cell count.
The vet suspected a gastrointestinal infection. The vet prescribed him antibiotics. The vet suggested giving him chicken and rice. He ate the chicken/rice and seem to improve a little. His stool was better. The next day he ate his regular dog food. After consuming the Nutro Natural Choice dog food, He threw up all the food. That night his fever grew higher resulting in a visit to the ER. His spleen was still enlarged; and his platelets dropped even more and his red blood cells were dangerously low. The next day his fever spiked to 104.8. We kept him cool with cold/wet compresses. The next day, we took him to our vet again, but she was out of town.
We were recommended to another vet. When we went to him, he was extremely concerned about the fever and the low blood counts. He gave him two shots, one of Rimadyl and Baytril. That night his fever broke. He hasn't have a fever for two days. The doctor put him on Prescription Diet LD. His stool was better and he is improving. We had a recheck with the vet and his platelets shot up significantly. However, tonight, my other Doxies became ill after consuming the Nutro. This week has been a nightmare for our family, mentally and financially. We were very worried about our dog.
After reading all these complaints, I truly believe the Nutro Natural Choice is causing all these problems with my Doxies. Recently, Pet Supermarket had a half price sale on the Nutro. We bought four bags. I notice that other stores are following this pattern. I feel really awful that we purchased these bags and the food got our dogs sick. I believe that Nutro is trying to get rid of their food very fast. I am returning the other bag I purchased along with a copy of how many dogs have gotten sick in the past few months. We love our dogs like our family as do the other families that have been affected by this. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Recently, Big Lots (a discount retailer handling overstocks, overruns, discontinued products) has had very small amounts of Nutro Naturals puppy and adult food. It is VERY unusual for them to have higher-end products, and the prices were 1/3 to 1/4 Petsmart's price. The foods were not near their expiration date, and I questioned how Big Lots got them. Now I know. I don't believe I've had an issue with the puppy food. But, when I started mixing the adult food with the puppy food to wean her onto adult food, she had some major issues of gas and loose stool. My second dog is an older Chi, so the adult food has not been a big staple of her diet, but she has eaten it several times. NOW I'm putting it together that they were both eating grass and had upset tummies; loose or watery stool; and/or the most toxic gas to ever escape from a dog. When I get home tonight, I'm photographing the bar codes/identifying product info and sending them to Nutro, along with a request for any information about complaints related to the products. I have a second, unopened bag and I'm not feeding it to my pups without a response from Nutro. I suggest everyone else do the same.

I have 9 small dogs that vary in age from 14 weeks to almost 13 years old. Wednesday night I noticed that someone had diarrhea (my dogs go on pads). When I came home from work on Thursday, there was diarrhea all over the kitchen. I figured out who I thought it just was and cleaned her up, gave her some pepto. Mind you, everyone is eating Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice Limited Ingredients Small Bites for over a year and I just opened a new bag Wednesday (30lb bag on sale at Petsmart). On Friday, I arrived home from work to diarrhea, blood, undigested food vomit, pee everywhere in the kitchen! I had no idea who was doing what. My 14 wk old shih-tzu's playpen had diarrhea everywhere too. I saw one of my dogs, Lucy, pooing blood.
I had a vet appt anyway for the puppy for shots so I took Lucy with me. The vet gave the puppy an antibiotic shot but not vaccinations because she wasn't feeling well. Lucy tested positive for pancreatitis and had a 105.8 temp and I had to take her to an emergency vet for overnight care. On Saturday, the puppy was pooing blood & crying when she did so back to the vet I go. She stayed with them for a majority of the day - they gave her fluids, antibiotics, etc. No temp, bloodwork good, no parasites. While she & Lucy are being cared for at the vets, I cleaned all dogs beds, washed kitchen floor several times, food bowls, toys, made chicken and riced and cut out all Nutro. Lucy was well enough to come home late Saturday evening with an RX GI low fat diet and meds: famotidine, amoxicillin, metronidazole. Sophie came home with metronidazole (cut into 1/8) & probiotics & RX High Energy GI diet.
My clan had chicken & rice Saturday night and the puppy & Lucy had their RX diet (they all had Nutro Sat morning because, at that time, I didn't suspect it could be food - I didn't know what to think!) Still, someone, not sure who had diarrhea but not much. After I fed everyone, one dog had green fluid watery poo, another had shooting light brown diarrhea and yet another had a mixture of soft and light brown very soft. Obviously, they were still not feeling well. I can't say for certain that it was the new bag of Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice that caused all of my dogs to get sick - making one have acute pancreatitis - but it seems very coincidental that it happened after I gave them a new bag of food. As of today, my dogs are not 100% but I believe they are on the road to recovery. I will not chance them getting sick again and give them Nutro. Now I am wondering about all the times they would vomit undigested food in the past... It was probably Nutro all along and I just didn't make the connection.

I assumed it was a bug and continued to feed her the same food. Now all 3 of my dogs started to get sick and even refused to eat their regular food. I went to the store and it seems that their food is no longer on the shelf. I called Nutro and asked what was going on. I was told they were reformulating it and it would have higher protein, 30 instead of 21. That is a huge jump in protein???? They said there were no complaints about the other food, just wanted to make it better.
SHAME ON NUTRO FOR NOT ADMITTING THAT SOMETHING IS GOING ON. I next went to the computer and looked up Nutro and there are over 1640 complaints about the food in the last couple of months. I printed out some of them and took them to our Vet and they said there were more than enough problems listed in the complaints and to stop feeding my dogs the food. Something has changed in the last couple of months and I do not want my dogs being sick because of it. I have switched to Blue Buffalo Freedom and my dogs are feeling better. Then I realized maybe it's his food Nutro? But I didn't really think it was the cause because it's expensive and we avoided Alpo etc. for our dog’s health... Anyway went to Trader Joe’s and bought the holistic just to try it and boom! Now it's 2 months and our dog hasn't Puked once... so wow! Something is up with Nutro. My pug Tom ate Nutro Ultra, small breed dry food for years. I just put him to sleep on Thursday. He would have been 10 on August 12th. Other than a benign tumor, he had never really been sick. That all changed toward the end of June. Diarrhea, vomiting, the loss of a third of his body weight, lethargy and then weakness. All that the blood panel revealed was a deficiency of protein. There were some good days mixed in there. Initially started giving him Nutro wet mixed with rice. Then at the suggestion of the vet, white meat chicken instead of the rice. He had some good days but it was too late.
I never considered that his food may have had something to do with his death. Maybe, it didn't, however, I just told an attorney I work with on a client that I had to put Tom down. He asked about his food and when I told him he told me of his own sick dog (also, are Nutro), he asked about Tom's diet and told me to go online. I don't know what caused Tom's death and will never know. I look at the comments on here and my own experience and hope that the company and FDA do testing, people take their pets to the vet immediately after any symptoms and that diet be considered or reconsidered immediately. If your babies are ill, I hope that they have a speedy and permanent recovery.

Something must have gone wrong with Nutro's food from what I am seeing here. Suddenly after buying the latest batch (I usually purchase about $100 at a time), first one cat, then the other started with diarrhea and vomiting. I knew there was nothing in the house (they are indoor only) they could have gotten into, and I decided to try feeding them a little bit of homemade food. Amazingly, all of the digestive issues vanished. They have always preferred Nutro over any other brand, so this is quite disconcerting. But I will now have to change them to something else. This is a challenge, as one of them is sensitive to grains and the other is a picky eater.

My dogs have had chronic diarrhea and digestive problems for the past few months. I have fed them Nutro Natural Choice for quite some time with no problems. In May, I mixed large bags of Nutro Ultra and Nutro Natural Choice, with problems ever since. They have had normal fecal tests and taken antibiotics. The vet finally concluded it must be food related. A few days ago, I bought a new bag of Nutro Natural Choice and discontinued the Nutro Ultra. I am seeing some improvement, but it is still not normal. After reading a few of these reviews, I intend to stop feeding them NUTRO altogether. Thanks for sharing this information. My heart aches for all the sick (and deceased) pets, and it angers me to think we have inadvertently sickened or poisoned our beloveds.

Took her to the vet and $600 worth of blood tests later & normal blood work except she is dehydrated (from vomiting) another $100 in hospital care with I.V. Fluids & special diet Vet switches her to (Science Diet wet i/d prescription). She goes a couple days with no vomiting & no issues at all until we started reintroducing her Nutro. (1/4 C per meal) Yesterday by the evening she was roughly 1/2 & 1/2 dry Nutro to Wet Science Diet i/d but this morning we again awoke to vomit in her kennel --it is all undigested Nutro but the i/d Science Diet seems to have been digested and I'm now certain the Nutro Natural Choice is to blame. I washed it down the sink and the Nutro although soft and spongy won't break up! Something is wrong I dont know what but the FDA needs to investigate!

I have a 9-year old Basset Hound and I've been feeding him a mixture of Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice and Nutro Ultra, both for large breed adult and I never had any problems with my dog or the food. It all changed at the end of June. The dog stopped eating and when I took him to the vet he was found to be fighting off some type of an infection. He is no longer running a fever but he seems lethargic and it is still not eating a fresh batch of his Nutro food. I tried feeding him different food and he is now starting to eat. After reading some of these comments, I'm wondering if there is something in the food that may have started to affect my dog.

We just put our 11 year old female Australian shepherd down. My husband has had her since she was a puppy and like many here felt he was providing quality food with Nutro blue. Perfectly healthy previously ........she was all the sudden lethargic and so we took her to the vet. Great blood work nothing detectable by our vet. Progressively over the next week she got worse. She lost her motor skills completely. She was frantically pacing, hugging perimeters in an effort (it seemed) to keep her bearings. She lost 10 lbs over that one week. Again we took her to the vet. Comprehensive blood work, urine, chest x-ray and work up revealed nothing abnormal again.
My vet conferred with three other vets and they could not identify the problem. Their best guess was a neurological disorder but without costly and not guaranteed tests there was no way to be certain. Given her age we opted to put her down at our vet's recommendation. Today my husband said he couldn't help but wonder if something may have been up with the food......it didn't smell right. I decided to look it up and found all of you......What a horrible feeling wondering....Was it as simple as changing her diet?

Since my dog was getting older (she will be 10 in September), I decided to switch her to Nutro Natural Choice Senior Food. Her liver counts were extremely high after the switch and she vomited a foam substance everyday. I read other people online who had experienced the same problems so I quickly took her off of it and started making home made dog food. The day after she was taken off Nutro she stopped vomiting and has had no illness since then. I have taken her back to the vet three times since discontinuing their food and her liver counts have continuously dropped. She has more energy now and is back to the normal playful dog that she was before then. I have reported this to the FDA and am hoping that something will be done so no other owners have to go through the worry of not knowing what is wrong with their dog and the cost of the vet visits. The worst thing was having to see my dog go through the illness and no vet could tell us exactly what it was. I just wanted to take her pain away. I am so thankful that I am not alone, but I wish none of us had to go through this.

My dog got very sick from Nutro Ultra and I am now switching brands. I've been feeding my 6 year old pit bull Nutro (original) brand for several years. One and a half weeks ago I decided to try out the Nutro 'Ultra' thinking that he'd be getting a more premium product. Two days after feeding him the Ultra, he started throwing up in the morning. Then for the next week, he had bloody diarrhea with mucus. During this time I fed him chicken and rice, until his stomach felt better and his stools were back to normal. He got better in about a week.
Since I had been feeding my dog Nutro brand for a while, I thought that it was just coincidence that he got sick the same time I switched food. So, I started him on the Ultra again two days ago and this morning he started getting diarrhea again. I am now certain that the cause of his sickness was the food. The 1500+ reviews on this site confirm this. I am switching brands and will not be using Nutro any more. I am concerned with their manufacturing and quality assurance process and can no longer trust their products.

My 12-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi started throwing up saliva twice a day around 4 am and 4 pm. 10 hours after each feeding. The Vet prescribed half of Omeprazole daily to settle his stomach thinking it was just something older dogs experience. My Corgi was on Nutro Lamb and Rice kibble for many years; however the upset stomach has been going on since mid-2013. The Omeprazole worked for awhile, then gastrointestinal issues started again. After researching recently and finding this website with numerous reports of similar experiences linking gastrointestinal issues to a change in Nutro kibble formulation, decided to stop Nutro. Within 24 hours of stopping Nutro kibble and switching to another brand of Lamb/Rice kibble, the gastrointestinal upset stopped completely, no more episodes of heaving saliva. Given the number of similar reports on this website indicating a connection between Gastrointestinal issues in dogs with Nutro kibble, I would expect the company to take action as you are losing customers and will continue to lose as the word spreads via social media and word of mouth (I will be sure to let my Vet know too).

We chose to switch our dog to Nutro Ultra - Senior as she is 10 and we liked the amount of Glucosamine and Chondroitin in the food. This was by far a huge mistake. We saw over a 2-week period a progression from soft stools to terrible diarrhea. We also noticed a significant drop in her energy level. Since stopping the food and giving her Earth's Pride from BJ's Wholesale, we have noticed a complete 360. We thought we were doing a service for our dog and ended up finding out just how bad this food really is. Have also submitted a complaint with the FDA as nearly 1500 recent complaints shows a troubling pattern of neglect on this company's part.

I have two dogs and have successfully fed Natural Choice Adult Lite at the recommendation of my vet. A new bag purchased less than a week ago immediately began producing gas in both dogs. Coincidentally the older of the two began a palsy-like tremor. All vitals, blood, urine, sugar, bowel, cortisol levels, blood pressure were normal. Only heavy sedatives calmed her. Today I fed as normal and similar symptoms began in both dogs, including diarrhea, lethargy, and other behaviors not normal for either.
I induced vomiting, emptying the contents of both of their stomachs. They improved both immediately. I prepared and fed them a meal of boiled rice and boiled ground beef (cooked separately). They both ate well and are now resting comfortably. Unfortunately, I pitched the bag, but it was purchased at the Petco on Far Hills in Oakwood, Ohio. I am sure a refund is not to be forthcoming; however, I will not feed them the remaining bag for which I paid $60, and will most assuredly not buy the product again.

A couple years later, my pit/rot mix lost control of his back end, he was 12 and this wasn't surprising, however the vet said it was highly likely that he had also been affected with cancer in his bones. My in-laws' dog (who was the sister of my pit/rot) also developed a tumor in her neck that could not safely be removed which ultimately led to her trip to doggy heaven. I had nothing but good things to say about this dog food - my dog loved it, great price, and "quality" product. Then at the beginning of the year, she started throwing up yellow bile. I took her to the vet and they recommended to feed her twice a day because bile is normally a sign of her throwing up on an empty stomach. We tried that but she continued to throw up bile. We took her into the vet again and they did blood work and x-rays. They couldn't find anything wrong with her. It got to the point she was throwing up food when I came across this website.
I really wish I would have thought that it could have been her food but I was so sure that there was no way that it was her food as she had a consistent diet since she was a puppy. Sure enough we switched foods and it went away. I lodged a formal complaint with this company and they tried to say they had never heard of this issue. I find that hard to believe with the hundreds of complaints on this website and numerous others. Of course I did not think it was the food. When you pay $50 for dog food, you somewhat assume its quality. But I'm not complaining, my dogs are rescues who I would pay anything to ensure they get a good food. The vomiting continued with me thinking they must not be feeling well. I mean they are eating.. maybe it's the switch.. They are getting older...
Until My basset hound, Lily, started having seizures. At first, she would run and hide at food time, then she started refusing to come in the house, then refused to eat... Then seizures. She had no seizure issues before I switched to Nutro. She was a couch potato.. Now my baby girl is AFRAID to come inside. I purchased a bag and fed him that bag which he finished in a month. I went back and purchased a second bag. He didn't want it but I figured he was just being fussy. It would sit all day before he would eat any. He started throwing up yellow bile and got diarrhea. I thought it was because he hadn't ate much. After a few days, I called the vet and took a stool sample in to be tested. She thought maybe he had parasites but it didn't show any. She said to put him on rice with a little chicken broth for a few days. After about 3 days, I called her back because the stool was now runny and mustard color. She said to boil chicken and add to the rice.
3 days later I called her back he was still the same. She said to bring in another stool sample to test for bacteria. She tested it and said it showed bacteria and gave me 2 medicines to give him for 5 days. One is a probiotic fortiflora and metronidazole. Today is the 4th day and no change in the diarrhea. Once I took him off the dog food and gave him rice, he didn't throw up any more. She said if this doesn't take care of it she will need him to come in. The problem is he doesn't like people especially vets. He had a bad experience with one when he was younger. If I take him in, she will have to put him out.
I hate the thought because he's 13 years old. Until this happened he was in great health. He is not out of the house except to his yard or to walk with me always on a leash. I'm thinking of just trying Science Diet dog food and see if he will get over the diarrhea (food recommended by my vet) prior to having him put out but I'm not sure if something else is going on. Since I put him on rice, he seems okay just hungry but with more energy... and the diarrhea.

She has never been a big fan of the food and I've always had to dress it up to entice her but she eventually would eat.
Last week she ate her bowl of food and the next morning, 14hrs later she threw up all her food that had not digested at all and she went into a full blown seizure that resulted in a stroke. She spent 48 hrs at the vets to be monitored and was of course fed different food. She has come out of it fairly well and I was able to bring her home but she is blind in her right eye and has instability in her front right leg. I have to now walk her outside to do her business. I'm hopeful she will get stronger as time goes by but my concern is what is causing all these health problems all of a sudden. As I do research and see the issues and concerns with the Nutro products, I have to wonder. This happened a few years ago with Iams and I had to change food then as well as my previous dog started having health problems then too from a change in Iams. But now I wonder what Nutro has done and what food is healthy and natural. Not sure if this will help anyone but I felt it was important to share.

I have been feeding Nutro to two dogs and two cats for nearly 8 years now and have never had an issue. I have at least 10 family and friends that also feed Nutro. Maybe we are getting the randomly "good" bags. Their coats are beautiful, their poop is firm and they are healthy, energetic pets. I am sincerely sorry so many people's pets get sick, but maybe, just maybe it was something else. I felt compelled to post, since it appears the only people that use this site have had issues. Surely with how much Nutro is sold annually and by so many retailers, if there was such an expansive issue as these posts suggests, there would be more actions. I can only figure that these are isolated incidents indeed.

I bought this food going from purina pro plan to trying healthy dog food and this was the worst. My Boston terrier will eat anything and never has an issue. Literally the next day, he was ill almost like food poisoning. For 5 days until I took him to the vets office, he wouldn't eat or drink. He diarrhea everywhere in the house even at the vets office multiple times. He threw up two days. He also lost 2 pounds in 5 days! This was the worst experience ever and I really feel they should compensate the vet's Bill or a class action lawsuit should be in motion. The vet said the probability of the dog getting sick was high from the dog food. I am sorry for everyone's else's horrible experience. For 1600 cases that is really bad. My dog is now on antibiotics and had to have fluid injected under his skin. He is now on science diet recommended by the vets and finally actually ate it. I will keep everyone updated, best of luck!

We were looking for a really healthy snack to feed our Yorkie, and decided to try the Ultra all natural biscuits, small breed formula last week. After the 2nd day of giving her only 2 of these biscuits per day, (Package says up to 3 per day for her weight) she became lethargic, and started vomiting. She vomited 7 times in one night, until there was nothing left but bile. We were up with her all night trying to get her to eat some of her regular food, and get her better. We stopped the biscuits for 2 days, and she became playful, and back to normal. We thought she just had a really sour stomach from God knows what. Yesterday, we gave her only a half of one biscuit, thinking IF it was the biscuits that turned her stomach, maybe introducing them to her slowly would be smarter. Last night, about 4 hours after giving her the Nutro Ultra, she became ill again, and vomited her little guts out! She was weak, and lethargic again! After reading these RECENT complaints, I think their ingredients needs to be investigated! There is obviously a HUGE problem with their products, and I for one, am DONE with Nutro!

I didn't have my dog on Nutro more than 1 month before he began losing weight and vomiting yellow bile and experiencing severe, also yellow, diarrhea. Took him to the vet and they informed us his dog food, Nutro, had inhibited his ability to produce a healthy bacteria and a protein and essentially his large intestine was beginning to shut down. Vet recommended Purina Pro. He's been on it for 1 week and he's healthy as could be.

My dog has been eating Nutro's Ultra dog food since she was 3 months old. In December Petsmart was out of it, so I purchased one of their other lines of food. She too began vomiting bile in the wee hours of the morning, in which I took her to the vet. They diagnosed it as her just being hungry and that I should give her a treat before bed. Well this kept going until one night she was vomiting and had diarrhea all night. I finally purchased another brand and everything went back to normal. Just this yesterday, I decided to give the Ultra Food again and as soon as she finished it, she became sick. I immediately induced vomiting to get it out of her and hopefully the rest of her day will be more pleasant. Shame on Nutro for not recognizing that there is a problem. I specifically had chosen them because when there was an epidemic of bad dog foods on the market that were killing family pets, Nutro was not one of them. Never again.

We have been feeding our shiba inu and Siberian husky Nutro lamb and rice for the past 5 years now. The last 3-4 weeks, our husky started vomiting and became very lethargic. He does not enjoy his walks anymore and just seems to always want to lay down. We have taken him to the vet 2 times now and all his bloodwork and x-rays were all normal. We switched to just feeding him chicken and rice the past few days and can notice a huge difference and only hope he is on his way back to returning to his normal and playful self.
Thankfully, our shiba has not experienced a reaction as bad to the food, however within the last month, we have noticed that she has started dry heaving a few times. She too went to the vet and all tests were normal. We also moved in with our sister's family, and they slowly transitioned their corgi to be on same food as our dogs, and he too started vomiting, got checked out by the vet and they found nothing abnormal in testing. When our dogs were puppies we fed them a different type of food from Nutro, but noticed they were constantly having diarrhea at least 1-2 times a week. The Nutro lamb and rice was a lot better on their stomachs and they did not have any issues until this past month. No idea what happened with quality of this food, but hopefully they will look into these reviews to ensure their product is safe for pets, which after reading the reviews it clearly is NOT!

USED to feed Nutro Food.......until we went a whole year with no litters of pups. We have been breeding Doberman Pinschers since 1991 and have 16 Dobermans of our own. Usually have 5-8 litters a year. In 2011 and 2012, we had ZERO litters of pups born. Females were absorbing the fetuses before they were born, because of too much protein in the dry food. We have since switched to Loyall Dog Food by Nutrena, one of the few without a recall in their background. Nutro is trash food and the makers refuse to do anything about the poor quality, so just use a better dog food for your pets.

After reading these other horrible stories, I can assume that my dog dodged a bullet in consuming a bag of Nutro Lamb & Rice food. I came to this site to see if others were having problems in receiving the advertised rebate as I have been. I purchased the 15-pound bag in mid-January in response to the Nutro Company's rebate offer of reimbursement of the price of the food ($33.99) with completed form, proof of purchase and store receipt. I thought this was a good incentive to try a new food.
I mailed the required items on January 16th, and assumed I would have a check within 4-6 weeks as advertised. When I hadn't received it by April 10, I called the number supplied on the rebate form, and I was told that there was "confusion" over my address so the check hadn't been delivered. After I gave them the address again, and my post office box number as well, I was assured by the representative ("Michael") whom I was speaking with that he had corrected their records and my check would be sent "shortly." Two weeks later with no check, I called again and again spoke with "Michael." He reiterated that my address was correct in their records but that the check had not been mailed, and that I should allow "a few more weeks" to actually have it "in hand." When I protested that it had now been over three months since I submitted the rebate request so I failed to understand why it would be several more weeks, he simply repeated that it would take "a few more weeks." I therefore wonder if the company does, in fact, intend to honor its advertised offer at all.
As far as the food itself, my dog (a 12 year-old hound mix) seemed to like it and gobbled it down quickly - although she has never been a "picky" eater and gobbles most food enthusiastically. She did have a little vomiting and diarrhea the first few days, which I attributed to the change in food even though I had mixed the Nutro with her old food and gradually introduced it. Now, having read about the experiences of these other dogs and cats, I think we were very lucky and I won't risk feeding her that again. I also think that this company should be taken to task for not recalling what may well be tainted food and for failing to honor its advertised offer.

We had been feeding my Dalmatian/Pit Bull mix Science Diet ever since he was a puppy with no problems. In January, we switched over to NutroMax because it was supposedly a higher quality recipe. The price of the NutroMax was relatively comparable to Science Diet so we thought, "Why not give it a try if it supposed to be a better product?" So we bought the beef NutroMax and incrementally mixed it in with his current food to give his stomach time to transition to the new food.
We began to notice that about 2-3 mornings a week, he would start to heave and expel a yellowish foamy bile-like substance. At first we thought his stomach didn't agree with one of the new Barkbox treats we had been giving him so we eliminated that from his diet. We are very good about not giving him people food. I'll also mention that we currently live an apartment complex so we have him out on a leash every time we take him outside so we are constantly monitoring his outdoor activity.
Even after we stopped giving him the Barkbox treats, he continued to vomit a few times a week. We couldn't figure out what was causing him to get sick. When that bag of food was almost up, we decided to try the chicken NutroMax thinking maybe the beef version was the problem. Once again, we slowly transitioned over to the chicken one. He still had the same vomiting problem and his shedding became worse. True, it is spring and a lot of dogs shed around this time, but it was the worse shedding he's ever had. Plus, his skin became very dry and we noticed it flaking like dandruff. We were considering taking him in to the vet to see what could be attributing to these conditions.
It was finally at this point that my fiance looked up NutroMax reviews/complaints and we found very similar symptoms as to what my dog had. He forwarded me the link to this website while I was at work and after reading a few posts, I immediately called him and said, "Do not feed Kobi that food anymore". That night, we went to Petsmart and returned the food we had bought a few days before. They honored the return and said they were not aware of any recall for the food. We then sought the advice of one of their employees in choosing a different brand of food. We ended up getting the salmon Simply Nourish which will hopefully help his coat and dry skin. It's only been a few days now, but we've already noticed his skin is much better and he has not vomited at all.
Looking back, maybe the realization that it was the food that was causing all these problems was very obvious, but we trusted the NutroMax brand. Perhaps my dog just has a food allergy to one of the ingredients in the food. Whatever it is, we will never be buying this product again.

I had been feeding both of my dogs (Border Collie mix and a Beagle) Nutro Adult for years. Both of them have ALWAYS been PERFECTLY healthy, no health issues whatsoever. I bought my last bag of this food on March 21, 2014. On March 31, 2014, my PERFECTLY HEALTHY Border Collie mix, Appollo, mysteriously died. The night before, he was absolutely normal, happy, and healthy. We woke to find he was an entirely different dog. He could not stand on his own, was breathing rapidly, and just wanted to lay on the floor. I could not get him to go outside, eat, or drink.
Being a very trained, obedient dog, I knew this was abnormal and decided to keep a close eye on him all day. With no progress as the day wore on, I took him to the emergency vet in the early evening. His mouth was cold, and he was generally just out of it... not himself at all. His temp at the clinic was only 93 degrees and his blood pressure was so low that the vet could not get enough blood to do tests. There was ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with my baby physically, as the vet thoroughly examined him. My Appollo took 3 fast breaths, when the vet scooped him from the table and ran to the back with him. He ran an oxygen tube down his throat to try and save him, but after about 10 minutes of this, he was gone.
Have been eating from the same bag of food, my Beagle had been vomiting yellow colored bile, pacing frantically for no apparent reason, guzzling water constantly, and consequently having accidents in the house. Both of my dogs have been house trained since they were tiny pups, NEVER having an accident until now. I think the Nutro food played a huge part in killing my dog, and I have since STOPPED feeding it to my Beagle. My Beagle has stopped guzzling water, stopped pacing frantically, and has stopped vomiting. I think I was unknowingly poisoning my deceased dog. Nutro needs to take this crap off the shelves and test it. He had been eating Nutro Little Bites and we had just gotten a bag of Natural Choice Lamb and Whole Brown Rice because it was on rebate and we figured, "Why not?"

It was mostly bile, but again, we just figured he had a sensitive stomach.
The most recent batch of Adult Lamb and Rice food we bought had a funny smell to it. My boyfriend thought I was nuts, because it is dog food - who likes the smell of dog food? It seems I'm not the only one to notice the smell though. The last week or so, our dog has had more diarrhea than normal as well as more vomiting. Our dog, that used to LOVE to eat, avoids his food, picks at it... Some days he won't touch it at all. Yesterday, he must have been starving because he ate his whole serving of food - since then he has been violently vomiting, cannot hold his bowels and just seems miserable. After reading other posts, my dog has been experiencing other symptoms as well that I wouldn't have linked to his food - scratching, licking, guzzling water down.

I switched to Nutro Max Cat food in late September 2009 after having a food poisoning scare with another leading brand. The veterinarian that examined my domestic short-haired Calico cat suggested a few brand names of high quality food that are good for indoor-only felines. So I went to the PetSmart Store in Canton, Michigan and talked with two sales clerks, and they both recommended the Nutro Max brand, which my vet had also suggested earlier that day.
My cat tended to be rather finicky about what I served her, so I purchased several cans, and bag of dry Nutro Max food to see if my cat would like it or not. In reality, she really went crazy over it, and always finished her food that I served every day. So I have always bought Nutro Max Cat food for well over the past four years, with the confidence that I was buying a safe and nutritious product for my pet.
Conversely, I did try her out on Nutro Natural Choice minced can cat food, and bag of dry food early last year on a recommendation from an employee at the local PetSmart store. She wouldn't even touch this new product and turned her nose up at it. Even when I mixed a little of it with her old food, she would paw at it like it was something she had deposited in the litter box, and was trying to cover up. So I gave the Natural Choice food to the outdoor stray cats we feed, and after several days they experienced big-time issues with this food, including vomiting numerous times on the driveway, sidewalk, and even the front porch. It was at this point I switched back to the regular Max Cat brand, and my cat was happy with it. However, the most recent purchase I made of the aforementioned product ended up costing my seven year-old cat her life!
I opened a newly purchased bag of Indoor Adult Salmon Flavor a few days before Valentine's Day. I noticed my cat became sick and threw up in the hallway that same day. Likewise, she also had a can of Max Cat Adult Duck Chunks in Sauce, which was also vomited all over the rug in the bathroom near her litter box a day later. Then two weeks ago, I gave her a small handful of the Indoor Adult Salmon Flavor kibble before noon. Later on towards 4:15 p.m. she was begging for her daily moist cat food, so I opened a can of Max Cat Adult: Seafood & Tomato Bisque Chunks In Sauce, which is one of her all-time favorites. Then five hours later began a living hell that would drain the life out of me to point of total exhaustion, which in the long-run ended up killing my poor cat.
Around 9:30 p.m. my cat began howling in pain near her litter box. She was walking around in circles, and was frequently vomiting all over the rug near the sink in the bathroom. Worse yet, she would try climb in her litter box to defecate and nothing would come out, and repeatedly she would vomit up copious amounts bile afterwards. Likewise, she was drooling on the floor while howling in agonizing pain. This went on for the next few hours without reprieve, and I decided to contact my local animal clinic to take her in immediately for an emergency examination.
I arrived at the clinic about an hour after they opened up, and rushed my cat inside. I explained to the veterinarian, who handled my emergency that my cat couldn't defecate, and had been salivating and vomiting for the past few hours in great pain. So they took X-rays, and performed a series of tests to determine if there was a blockage or not. They were thinking she had swallowed an object she shouldn't have, but this was never the kind of cat who would do something like that.
The X-rays confirmed there was no blockage in her digestive tract, so the veterinarian gave her two enemas in an attempt to get her flowing again. We both agreed that it must have been something she ate that caused this sudden illness. I came back six hours later, and picked up my cat and brought her home for the weekend. She even had two bowel movements that were like black tar. However, she was still very listless, although the veterinarian said that all of her levels were good.
So I figured she just needed to sleep, and I gave her plenty of liquids, as she was displaying signs of polyuria and polydipsia most of the day on Saturday. However, by that evening her health really started to decline, and she was acting very lethargic and would often go into a catatonic state. I also observed that she was experiencing slight muscle tremors, which seemed to come and go. Likewise, her pink nose and gums inside her mouth were pale in color.
The next day, I had to start force-feeding her water, as she stopped drinking and I didn't want her to become dehydrated. Likewise, tachypnea was setting in, which later turned into acute dyspnea by late Sunday night as she was often gasping for air. Her problems with muscle tremors and drooling were becoming more frequent. Sadly, she was whimpering in pain, and there was nothing I could other than to stroke her fur and tell her to hang on.
When she would try to walk towards her litter box or the kitchen, her walking was so wobbly that she fell over several times, like her sense of physical coordination was way off balance. More than once, she urinated on the floor where she was lying, unable to make it to the bathroom. So I placed her food, litter box, and extra water in close proximity to each other next to her makeshift bed in the living room, praying that she would be able to make it through the night.
Finally, she died screaming at the top of her lungs in severe pain Monday morning before I could transport her back to the veterinarian; hence, she fell over in a convulsive seizure that lasted for less than a minute. There was white bloody foam pouring out of her nose and mouth onto the towels she lying was on. Then she tried with all of her strength to stand up, but fell over with a thud on her right side. Ultimately, she died and her life was over like a light switch had been turned off. It was the most ghastly sight I have ever seen in my entire life. I am so emotionally upset beyond words to describe the grief, and agony that I have endured in the fact couldn't do anything to save her life.
There has to be something seriously wrong with Nutro pet food products, and I can't believe the management of this company doesn't know about these countless issues that many pet owners are facing on a seemingly daily basis by using their products. Quality control must be completely out the window at this corporation. How can Nutro be so callous, and sell potentially lethal products to their customers, without caring at all about the lives of their pets? This is just plain wrong in so many ways! All I can say to other cat owners: switch to another brand now, before its too late!!

I began feeding my Jack Russells Natural Choice Lamb and Brown Rice small bites in January. They really liked it so I bought a second bag and now half way through that bag they are experiencing the same problems listed in other posts. Last night both dogs started vomiting. The episodes started at 2am and went on throughout the night. I had to let the older dog out at around 3:30am and the other dog continued to throw up small amounts this morning. I'm so glad I read what everyone else posted because I will stop feeding them this food to avoid any further damage.

After I feed our 75 lb lab (2.5 years old and very healthy), he will throw up about half the time. Switched back to Merrick and the vomiting stopped. Nutro, Natural Choice, Large Breed, Adult, Lamb and Rice, large bag. Very distressing. Nutro used to be a top brand. I suspect that the rice that is imported from China might be contaminated.

My 4 year old Havanese has eaten Royal Canin dry small breed since we've had her. 2.5 weeks ago, we received the coupon for free Nutro food at Petco and my husband could not resist. We bought the pink bag "small breed chicken, whole brown rice & oatmeal formula" with Natural Choice brand on it. We started mixing it with her Royal Canin slowly. Starting four days ago, her food is 95% Natural Choice.
Yesterday she vomited. Last night she was up pacing and then would cuddle and pace again, then she vomited what appeared to be all of the kibble she had eaten 3 or so hours previous. I gave her a piece of milkbone and she took it quickly. So, my husband gave her half of her usual portion of the NC kibble with a little RC in it. After that, she began the pacing/cuddling routine again and we found more vomit this a.m. in the other room. Today she has vomited four times and she just wants to lay in my lap, cuddle and shakes a little bit. I started giving her plenty of water and then read about plain chicken and rice to settle stomachs.
After reading all of these other stories, I'm throwing out the Nutro and just gave her a little plain chicken for now. Will continue with that to make sure I can get her stomach settled today. If not, it is off to the vet. Should have known.....even "free" items have a cost to them.

Nutro Natural Choice Venison Meal and Whole Brown Rice - I have been feeding my two yorkies and my son's yorkie this dog food for several years with no problems at all. I am 1/2 way through a new bag and all three dogs have been sick. My male yorkie has started urinating in the house about an hour after he comes in from going outside. He also is real bloated and has gas all the time. My female has been sick with vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Took her to the vet and he said she had a bacterial infection and gave her two shots and put her on antibiotics for a week; started her on chicken and rice that I cooked. When she got better I slowly put her back on the dog food and with 24 hours she was sick again. Now my son's dog has the same symptoms even though she has not been around my dogs in over a month. (We split the dog food with each other).
I don't know what they are doing different to the dog food but something is wrong with it and it is poisoning the dogs. Even though I have used this dog food for several years I will not put my dogs back on it after reading all the problems everyone else is having with it. The company should have taken these complaints seriously and did their research to see what was making dogs sick from eating it. I have told all my friends in the past how wonderful this food is but now I will make sure they know how sick my dogs got from eating it and will no longer recommend it to anyone. I buy all my dogs food and snacks from Hickory, NC.

I feed my dog various brands of food and have fed her Nutro in the past at times. I just purchased a new bag of Nutro Max Natural Chicken Meal and Rice Recipe - Large Breed Adult Food best by 26 Jan 15 - code 405A1LEB05 16:23 and shortly after she started eating this food I noticed she had urinated on her bed, which had never occurred in the past. Shortly after this she began to refuse to eat her food. This from a dog who excitedly gets up every morning goes outside and then comes in and gobbles up every morsel of breakfast consistently. I mentioned this to my daughter and she noted that my dog has begun to throw up dog food and bile.
I thought maybe the switch was related to the change in food, although this had never happened in the past and this was a normal food in the rotation. I mixed with the prior food and she ate around the Nutro and seemed to do better. I mixed them more thoroughly, not wanting to throw away the Nutro food. She ate the mixture and vomited again. After reading comments of others I will definitely not try to give her any more Nutro. Hopefully, since she is a larger dog, she will be fine when no longer exposed to whatever is causing this illness.

A year or so ago, I started seeing issues with "Hot Spots" on my 10-year-old Aussie's feet and hind quarters. We had recently introduced 2 new dogs to our home and I thought it was stress. His constant licking and itching was out of control!!!!! His skin felt hot and damp, like he was sweating and he had developed a strange odor??? Please keep in mind he was raised on Nutro and nothing else, sometimes Lamb and Rice for sensitive stomach or Venison, when available. After thousands in Vet bills his condition worsened to vomiting, hips not working, hearing going south, etc... Different vets and medications did nothing, allergy testing revealed nothing but the poor guy was suffering badly!!!! One vet told me it was probably a food allergy and suggested a food change, so in my "infinite wisdom" I chose Nutro Potato and Fish, as a complete change!!!!!!! My poor dog was still getting worse!!!!
About a month ago my wife was online and saw consumer reports on this food and that they had changed the formula when sold to Mars????? She had her 2 dogs on Pro Plan so we gave it a shot to completely change the Aussie's food. He is recovering slowly, his coat is getting better, he is no longer vomiting, his hot spots are going away and it seems his hearing is improving??? I never imagined at $60.00 a bag that I was poisoning my dog!!!!!!!! Thank you Nutro!!!! I lost my Terrier last year to complete system failure at the age of 12 and she was a Nutro dog as well. I cannot prove this as related but I do not wish this suffering for anyone's pet... PLEASE Get your pet off of NUTRO!!!!!! Before it's too late!!!!!

Why do they even stock this brand at the pet stores. My cat so lethargic and did nothing but sleep all day. Her eyes would roll back into her head. My cat recently got diagnosed with Round Worms and put on Drontal Saturday, so I thought it was the Drontal reaction. The owner of the shelter I adopted her from emailed me to inform me that she treated Daisy and all the cats at the shelter with Drontal for preventative purposes and Daisy had not trouble with Drontal. So then I put 2 and 2 together and figured it was the Nutro. I pulled the Nutro and gave her Fancy Feast and it is day and night with her today. She is sleeping but when I walk over to her she is wide eyed and not with her eyes rolling into her head and shallow breathing and lethargic.

Yesterday the vet ran a number of tests which showed our poor pup was close to death. Shortly after he had a seizure but survived. The vet asked if there was anything that could have poisoned our dog; exposure to old paint tins, arsenic? It then dawned on us that the period of sickness coincided with the new batch of Nutro. Started using Nutro Natural Choice Grain Free a couple of years ago for my two Miniature Schnauzers after being convinced by a Nutro rep (at a PetSmart store on Saturday) their product would help with skin issues. It did, in fact, help considerably. Would still be using the product if the bag my wife recently purchased had not contained dog food that appeared soaked in grease, and a foul smelling yellow grease caked on the inside of the bag.
Returned the newly opened bag to PetSmart, where a manager and another employee refused to even look in the bag. They happily refunded my money and recommended a better product, telling me returns of the Nutro product for this exact reason were becoming common. One worker even told me the bags left a nasty grease spot on the store shelves where they were sitting. They had been exposed to the foul smell and nasty contents, and had no interest in opening the bag. Two questions: 1) What happened to quality control at Nutro? and 2) Why does PetSmart keep such a poor quality product on their shelves?

He was losing hair and developed a skin infection. He was miserable. He also started vomiting every morning and night, normally about an hour before meal time. I thought he was just hungry. Then my female started getting sick too. She is 4 years old and has never had to go to the vet in her life (other than shots and for her basics). I knew something was wrong when she just stopped moving. She was acting depressed and I couldn't get her excited about anything. Then she started the vomiting too. Licking her lips nonstop and shedding like crazy.
I immediately went back to Petco and switched foods. Within 4 days, they were both back to their normal selves. I can't believe they haven't recalled this crap yet. SHAME ON YOU NUTRO MAX. For OVER 20 years we have used Nutro Max dog food (4 dogs - 3 of which lived healthy happy lives to the old age of 18 and 19). All Australian Sheps - we told everyone (friends/family/work associates) for years that this was the only food they should feed! We watched the bags shrink and the price sky rocket but that didn't stop us from giving our beloved pet the food we thought was the best for our crew. Our recent issues began earlier this year, with our current 9 year old Aussie - always a healthy appetite she began refusing the food, her skin was dry and flaky, she began scratching, even biting at her coat/feet, shedding more than is typical..... It was gradual but then we visited our vet.
She inquired about our feeding habits - we answered, NO we didn't change foods, we didn't provide treats and we didn't give table food (no change at all, we said). So vet suggested that we try Benadryl as needed..... We did this but only occasionally and then, the symptoms worsened... She began having "shivers" or "quivering", she became increasingly lethargic and she developed a hot spot (first hot spot ever in any dog we have every owned), she bit at her coat and feet even more, I was calling for yet another appointment with our vet. Then, just by BLIND luck.... I saw an article from another Nutro Max long time user that just floored me, honestly I read it at least 10 times. Their story was mine!! I could have written it word for word. Same symptoms, same timeframe!
Not only did Nutro Max change their bag, size and price - they changed the ingredients and they are obtaining ingredients outside the country that are unregulated sources? I am absolutely sickened - I missed all of this, no notice!! We have spent $1,000s with this company, we trusted them!!!?!!! We even told everyone this was the food for their pets! We have 3/4s of the largest bag remaining, that's approximately $35 (small change to the $1,000s we have spent) but my adorable Bella will not get one more small bite of this so called "food" - would any Nutro Max representative like to buy this back from us? Or pay for our vet visits? Or pay for unnecessary Benadryl we gave to our beloved pet? Or her PAIN and SUFFERING? SHAME ON YOU, NutroMax.
To Nutro Max - feel free to contact me.... I don't expect to hear from anyone; however, I will be letting all of our friends and family that if they are feeding this product that they should STOP immediately! Hopefully we can prevent others from experiencing what we have been through! Absolutely sickened, A long time customer who is NO Longer Your Customer.

My husband purchased the Nutro Dry Puppy food by accident. We mixed some of that with the latest bag of Nutro Lamb and Rice. Suddenly, my dog stopped eating completely. We purchased another bag of Adult Dry Lamb and Rice, and tried feeding that to him. He would not eat anything at this point, not even his favorite treats. He started throwing up water. Eventually, he stopped drinking water. He was barely moving. He was unable to walk. We rushed him into the ER on a Sunday night - $500 later. His blood tests came back normal. The only issues were that he had very high calcium levels and his heart rate was very fast. The vet said it was probably an aggressive form of cancer. My dog is only 5 and he was perfectly healthy. I refused to believe he could get so sick so quickly. I went online and found out that other dogs were getting sick from Nutro. I switched his food immediately. Purchased Nutro Natural Choice Lite Chicken, Brown Rice & Oatmeal dog food, Nutro Natural Choice Tartar Control biscuits the week before Christmas (2013). Our 4 year old Beagle mix has had no health issues aside from she can gain weight easily so we feed her weight management versions of most food. She has not been eating any trash, candy, or people food from inside the house... not been kenneled for months and there is a cover of snow on the ground and bitter cold outside, so getting to other sources of 'outdoors' snacks has been extremely limited.
She began to have acute vomiting (bile & food) after eating the dog food. She also has acute vomiting with wheezing/cough later after eating the Tartar Control biscuits. She is urinating and passing normal stools but is also licking around her anus. Whether this is related, I don't know, but it seems excessive. For several days, we withheld each product individually, then re-introduced them individually, with the same results each time. We have taken her off of all of these newly purchased Nutro products. Our dog is still eating from an older bag of Nutro Ultra Weight Management that has never made her sick. We have been using the Tartar Control biscuits for over a year with no issues and had run out of them. "The problem is in the new bags." I sent a similar notice to Nutro on their website. This post is in follow up to one that I made on 6 November 2013. In that post I stated that the illness my dog was suffering from was directly related to Nutro Dog Food, this was NOT the case. Since that post my 18-month-old puppy has passed away, the cause was not the dog food but a disease called Leptospirosis. I would encourage dog owners who read these posts to discuss the disease with their vets. The symptoms of this disease is identical to the symptoms described in the majority of the posts that I read prior to my first post. The death of my puppy and countless other dogs could have been prevented by a simple vaccination, the vaccine is not considered a core vaccination that is why it is not routinely offered. This disease can also be passed to humans by infected dogs. This summer/fall London, Ontario has seen 7 cases of this disease, our vet mentioned that he had known only 1 in the previous 30 years.

A week ago, I posted my concerns about Nutro Ultra dry puppy food. Last week, I was running out of dog food and had to make a decision to stick with Nutro or switch to another brand. After reading the criticisms, I was scared to say the least, but after reading other dog food sites reviews on the product, I decided to stay with Nutro Ultra. Over the last week, my concerns have subsided, and I am happy with the food. My dog isn't vomiting anymore, no more urinary problems, and scratching rarely occurs. I have never had any issues with diarrhea while feeding him Nutro. I believe the vomiting was caused by him eating too much too fast then playing/exercise immediately after.
I have stuck with the recommended amounts from Nutro and don't play with him for an hour after eating, and it appears to be working. I get numerous compliments on my dog's coat from friends and veterinary staff, and nothing but compliments concerning his health during checkups. I know it has only been a week since my original post, but I felt like I let the horror stories about Nutro get to my judgement/emotions and posted my concerns before allowing time to substantiate them. I am pleased with Nutro Ultra, my dog loves it, and I would recommend it to others. I did notice many of the complaints below are on the Nutro Chicken and Rice Formula which I have no experience with, and not the Ultra puppy brand that I am using.

Within the past 4 weeks I purchased a big bag of Nutro Natural Lite dog food. I did notice that it looked different than the same food I have been feeding him for years. He seemed to eat it fine, but eventually decided he wasn't interested. So I was doctoring it up for him = adding pumpkin, adding wet food. Well, he still was snubbing it here and there.
Over the last few weeks he seems to be drinking water like he is on steroids, throwing up a few times a day, refusing to eat his food, and he urinated while he was laying beside me. I can't tell if he has less energy because he is on pain meds for a bad back and has been living a pretty sedative life already. But according to everything I have been reading that seems to be another problem dog owners are having. Also I noticed he has been reverse sneezing more than normal. I have taken him off this food because I took him to the vet and explained my Pug's symptoms. They have him on a prescription diet food for 4 days now. Wondering if things will get better on their own just by switching foods. He is still throwing up but will now eat his new food.

I am concerned about Nutro Ultra Puppy dry food. I gave it 3 stars because I can't say for sure if it may be causing problems. I will feel terrible if it is because I read these reviews earlier today, but also went to other pet food rating sites that rated Nutro Ultra as a top quality brand, and today had to buy more food and still chose to stay with Nutro Ultra and bought the large bag. I have been feeding this to my Beagle/Terrier mix from the first day I got him at 8 weeks old, and was sold by the advertising that was certainly backed up by the higher price.
My dog is now just over 3 months, and at first things seemed to be fine. His coat looks great and no problems with stool. However in the last week or so, he seems to be having problems with urinary incontinence. Today I took him out and he relieved himself, and within an hour had gone on the floor. This has happened off and on over the last few days when he never had problems before, and I was expecting his bladder control to increase not suddenly decrease. Also, he has been vomiting probably 3 to 5 times a week for the last 4 or 5 weeks. Probably due to bloat, feeding him too much, and exercise after eating I figured, but he has done it a few times at night. Also, I figured this was due to his love of eating worms on the sidewalk, and basically any animal feces other than dog he finds when we go for walks before I can pull him away.
He has had modest scratching which has actually seemed to decrease lately. He seems to be in a great mood all the time, so no complaints there. I am going to continue to feed him Nutro Ultra puppy dry food and see if his problems continue with urinating in the house. I will update my post in a few weeks if there are any increase/decrease in his health. Reading all the complaints worries me, and I love my dog very much and I just want to make sure I am starting him off to a long life of good health with high quality puppy food like Nutro Ultra claims. I will be very upset if this is a case of a large corporation (Mars Inc) buying a successful brand name associated with high quality like Ultra had in 2005 only to change the formula to lower quality ingredients while keeping the high price in order to increase profits risking the health of our pets.

I’ve been feeding our dogs (now 1 dog, the other was almost 13 and that’s old for a great Pyrenees) and all 3 of our cats (2 now as the 14 yr old was switched as much as didn’t want to science diet renal help for her kidneys) for over a year, probably closer to 2 years. I’ve had no issues other than finding out my Maine coon mix cat might be allergic to chicken. From what I’ve read a lot the negative comments are from owners who didn’t transition their pets slowly into the new food. The rest do appear to be a mystery. I’m sad so many have lost their pets, but having worked in a pet retail store, if the food was really the culprit, there would be a recall involving Nutro. I have not heard of one in the year and a half I’ve worked at my store, nor have I heard about complaints from customers.

We have been purchasing Nutro Brand Lamb Meal and Rice Formula for years. Recently, I noted that our local store was only carrying something new called Lamb Meal and BROWN rice Formula. I bought it figuring it should be ok. Our 8 year old Black Lab has always done well on this Nutro dog food. The first night we fed her this dog food, she vomited and vomited and vomited. Our poor dog has been so sick for the last 5 days and we finally figured out it must be the dog food. We took her to the vet today, X-rays and blood work revealed nothing. After reading the other reviews on this site, I see we are not the only ones experiencing this. We won't be feeding her this food anymore because she won't even eat it at this point. We will never buy this dog food again and I hope people can get the word out that this dog food has something wrong with it.

I have a 19 month old golden retriever named, Charley. About a month ago, he started vomiting and having diarrhea. We took him to the vet and got X-rays, fluids under the skin and given antibiotics. We started to transition from chicken and rice to Nutro Ultra. Once the transition reached past 50%, the symptoms started again. The vet repeated X-rays, fluids and got blood work. All of his tests came back normal and was placed on ID (canned). Again, when the transition reached past 50% he got sick again. We met with a specialist who thinks that the food is the issue, since he is doing so well on ID. Our vet advised us to throw away all of the Nutro Ultra food, as that is the likely culprit for the illness. It is a shame, because he did so well on it, all of his life, which makes me wonder if they changed the formula, because there are too many similar cases out there. After a month and over $2,000 in vet bills, we will NOT be buying Nutro food.

I have feed Nutro large breed puppy and Nutro large breed to several GSD's without one single problem over the years. All of my Shepherds have lived at least 12 1/2 years to over 15 years. The 12 1/2 year old one is still alive. No hip problems, skin problems, stomach problems. Now have my dogs had upset stomachs, vomited, had colitis??? Of course but not due to this product. I was on here as part of researching Blue Buffalo Wilderness Large Breed Puppy as a possible change or to mix in with in Nutro for a GSD puppy I am picking up soon. At first I was shocked to see the negative reviews so being some what suspicious in nature. I started to check other brands and WOW THEY WERE ALL BAD. Every brand from the More expensive like BB, Nutro, Eukenuba, etc were just as bad as the grocery store brands on here. EVERY DOG FOOD IS KILLING DOGS ACCORDING TO THE REVIEWS.
Are some products bad for your dog? Yes of course. But dogs get sick, like people do, due to viruses, bacterial infections or other things they get into....animals, plants, chemicals, other sick animals excrement etc. Use these reviews as part of your process but other sites like dog food advisor, vet sites or even the reviews of these brands of pet store sites will give you another resource to make a decision. Nothing against some of the people on here but it seems like every one wanted to blame it on something tangible and not factual. If your dog tolerated this food well for months or years then the cause is most likely something else!!!! I have and will continue to highly recommend Nutro Products. Sorry Folks but they are awesome.

I was feeding my dog (small poodle mix) the dry food, Nutro Adult - Small Kibble (pink bag with a terrier on it). At first she was eating the food but then after some time she would just sit there at the bowl. I would tell her to eat and she would eat some but then she would just walk away and eat more later. After a while, it got to a point where she didn't want to eat it at all. Then, she started vomiting every now and then. That turned into every night. The same time of the night, she would vomit. She was also very lethargic and just laying around, panting more than ever (as if she was hot) and also shaking (as if she was cold), excessive use to go outside and urinate (every couple hours), etc.
So I STOPPED feeding her the food completely. For 3 days, I gave her nothing but white rice. No treats, nothing just rice. I then changed to Nature's Select and her stomach seems to be better but there are still symptoms remaining. I have sent a complaint directly to the FDA and think everyone should do the same. I am very upset and do not even have the funds to get proper treatment. I will never purchase this food again as I have Googled and read reviews of past occurrences from prior years.

I switched my service dog to this brand and have used about half a large bag. My dog has become incontinent, is excessively thirsty, and is urinating in the house. She just turned 3 less than a month ago, is completely trained - as I indicated also works as my service dog. I took her to the vet and her urine shows no infection. Before testing for kidney failure we decided to try something for incontinence, although she is young and has had no problem until a week or so ago, when she became so thirsty. I am wondering if this food is tainted, but can find no recent recall. As of tomorrow she will be taken off the food and given only food I prepare for her for a while. I am praying she will heal and recover as not only she my helper and my companion - she holds my heart in her hand.
I am disabled and elderly, and can not obtain another service dog due to waiting time and related expense. I also am not able to expend the time to receive one from a school as I'm unable to be up for extended times. I also am not able to train another myself due to worsening health issues and age. I am also a wheelchair user and in need of knee replacement also. This is not only harmful to me should I lose my helper, but it breaks my heart to see her so uncomfortable. I pray I can halt whatever is happening. She had no problems until I began feeding her this food a few weeks ago.

In February, we adopted a 7-week-old American Foxhound. Within weeks, he started having seizures, so we rushed him to the emergency vet where they informed us he had hook worms and a severe infection in his intestines. He is now almost 11 months old, and has not had a seizure since around 6 months old. I work at a pet store, and knew that I wanted him on Blue Buffalo. However due to his belly issues, the vet said we should switch because he was constantly having loose stools. He has been on Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed puppy for nearly 8 or 9 months, and at first he would gobble the entire bowl up as soon as we would put it down for him.
Starting in July we noticed that he was itching severely, even though he gets his flea/tick/worm medicine monthly. My first reaction was to think it was the food, however our vet told us that it was a ragweed allergy and to give him Benadryl, which gave him no relief. After a few weeks of that, I took him back in demanding that it had to be something else, and that's when the vet prescribed him an antibiotic and a steroid for his skin (he has small red bumps on his belly, and had made spots so raw they were bleeding). My puppy has been completely potty trained since around 3 months old, even when in his cage for hours while we are at work. He never goes in the house.
While on the medicines we would wake up to him peeing everywhere! Imagine a 65-pound puppy in a daze, legs locked, standing over you peeing while you are in bed. I knew that something wasn't right. He also has a decreased appetite. There are many days where we can only get him to eat one bowl of food, and that can take him almost all day to get through. After reading some of these reviews, it seems more prevalent to me that it is most likely the food. Has anyone else experience extreme itching while using this food? I am at my wits' end and looking for other vets so that we can get this fixed. I am also switching his food back to Blue Buffalo, considering we have cleared up his intestine/worm issue. I think he will do better on it.

Then this weekend, we came home to find a large amount of undigested food on the floor that he had thrown up. Ever since he has been very lethargic, not eating anything, initially drinking a lot of water. We took him to the vet today and have him on antibiotics and are awaiting the results of blood work. Then while doing some research tonight, I came across these threads and it seems more than a coincidence that other people have had and are still having similar issues. We have decided to stop feeding him this dog food even if it is not the cause of his illness due to the doubt it has set in my mind that this is not a good dog food. Good luck to everyone.

Below is my original post. I switched dog food the same day. It has been a little under 1 year and the pugs are doing much better. Honestly no problems at all. For all the readers who feel it's not the dog food... well I don't believe in consequences anymore.
I have a 6-year-old female pug and a 3-year-old male pug. I've been feeding them Nutro Adult (chicken, rice and oatmeal formula) for about 4 months. Let me first remind you, I've had no issues with either of these dogs until now. Over the past 2 months, I've gone through so much. The 3-year-old male first experienced diarrhea. I took him to the vet and a couple antibiotics later, we were back to road to health. Then shortly after, he started urinating blood. No stones in x-ray, but I'm waiting a month to do another lab test. Then about 3 weeks ago, he had anal glands protruding out of his rectum. He has also gotten ear infections in both ears. This was all in the past 2-3 months.
The 6-year-old female pug also had her first anal gland issue a few weeks ago (exact same thing). Now she has an ear infection, vomiting 2-3 times a day of mostly bile. Tonight was the first night she did not eat. The vet yesterday gave me some medicine for the nauseousness and said she should feel better in a day. Well she is getting worse. I honestly started thinking I was doing something wrong because both dogs are getting sick all of a sudden. Then I thought it was the dog treats. So tonight, I decided to Google the brand of dog food. I'm absolutely in shock, but a little relieved to know something is causing this. I'm changing food ASAP!

This morning 2nd dog now has bloody stool. Headed to the vet this morning. It must be, has to be the food. The vet said that with the serial number from the bag we can call to see if it has a problem. Cooking all dog food for now. I have 2 dogs, one about 6 1/2, the other a Pit/Boxer mix that 12 1/2. I been feeding them Nutro Senior (chicken and brown rice) for maybe 10 months or year. We almost lost Bailey the elder dog a couple of weeks ago. If it wasn't for a wonder, caring vet. And he was so sick it scared her. Reading these complaints, it's stuff I've been dealing with for 10 months, that we attributed to age. The upset stomach, we had him on Pro-Pectalin and Sucralfate for months, along with yogurt.
About 3 weeks ago Bailey became sick, somewhat lethargic. That was Wednesday, exactly 3 weeks ago. On Saturday we rushed him into the Vet. Totally lethargic and anemic, his red blood count dropped from about 50 to 18. Went through almost all testing described already online, liver, kidney, heart. We knew his auto immune system was haywire. She was convinced it was tick illness, ran the full panel, nothing. We looked at a possible cancer, maybe his spleen. On Monday he collapsed, right in front of the Cardiologist, so he had a complete cardio workup done. Nothing, again.
By 10AM Monday, we, a team of Vets all talk and discussed whether to transport him to TUFT ICU. They weren't sure he was going to survive the day. He survived. So now, week later were still confused what’s going on. Treat him with Amoxitab and then Micocycline hoping that it’s tick related. By the following Saturday he collapsed again. Another day at the vet, IV this time. Stopped all medications, began a stick regiment of LOTS OF TLC, starting with cooking him all meals. BLY, yes there was vomiting. So, ground beef and white rice then ground beef with mash potatoes.
So now a week later, much better, not 100% but definitely turned the corner. Monday's blood was 42, but his plates were off, so she want to continue a low dose of Prednisone every other day for a while. So here we are today, I've begun introducing dog food to him. I can tell you it's not NUTRO. But watching him very closely. My Vet is still scared with the long term issues. She's going to try and contact them to find out what the problem is. This is totally unacceptable. Somebody needs to step up.

In the beginning of Sept. 2013, we began feeding our 8 year old Beagle Nutro Naturals Lite. Despite having no problems with her previous food, Purina Beneful, we had heard several complaints about it and thought that by switching to the Natural Choice dog food that we were making a good decision. How wrong we were...
In the beginning of October 2013, after a few weeks on the food, our Beagle's demeanor had changed. Her energy had diminished and she was spending more time in bed. On October 13th and 14th, she began vomiting a lot. At that point, we became very concerned about how lethargic she was and the amount of vomit and took her to the vets where they administered an antibiotic. We were advised to watch her and follow up in two days and continue antibiotics at home. On October 15th, I came home to find her extremely lethargic and the whites of her eyes were yellow. I immediately called the vet and took her in where they hospitalized her and gave her IV antibiotic treatments and blood tests. The vet kept asking me if she could have eaten anything toxic like a mushroom but we just did not see her eat anything out of the norm (And with young children at home, all cleaners are locked up and not accessible!).
The next day, the results of her blood tests showed that her liver enzymes were at 500 vs 100 and that her gallbladder numbers were at 3,000 vs 150 (Not a typo - yes 3,000!) However, after just 24 hours of IV treatments and antibiotics, her demeanor was starting to improve and the whites of her eyes were returning to normal. Again we were asked if she could have eaten anything toxic to which I replied no. We were given the news that she could come home but would need to continue antibiotics until we could get her liver and gallbladder numbers back to normal.
After we were able to bring her home, we racked our brains with the constant question - could she have eaten anything toxic? Her food was the LAST thing I thought it could be until on a whim I decided to do a Google search on Nutro Naturals and came across this site. Reading through the thousands of reviews, seeing many dogs with very similar symptoms, there is no doubt in my mind that this food was the culprit behind her failing liver and gallbladder.
After a week of antibiotics and specialized food, her blood work was improving. Her liver enzymes were almost back to normal and her gallbladder was at 450 as opposed to 3,000. However, that is still 3x the norm, so she has continued antibiotics for an additional week and more blood work was tested today.
I am extremely grateful for our vets and that it appears we were able to save her life without permanent damage. However, I am saddened for all the dog owners out there that lost their pet to this food. And I am outraged that there can be this many complaints and yet the FDA has not recalled this product. Coincidences happen in life but not that commonly - not to the tune of 1,200 plus complaints on the Consumer Affairs website. Even though my dog appears to be on the mend, I will be contacting the company and the FDA to file a complaint. If this food has impacted your pet, please do the same.

I noticed that both of my dogs would vomit bile or undigested food (hours after eating so it shouldn't be undigested) at least twice a day. They both started having trouble going to the bathroom and we noticed blood in their stool. We thought we would try a different food to see if they would eat so we switched to Simply Nourish. Over a month ago she started vomiting a frothy yellow color vomit. And she had suddenly started seizuring. She has never had seizures before in her life. I took her on emergency to the vet. He did a ton of extensive and expensive tests. Turns out her liver enzymes were through the roof. He put her on seizure meds, Denmarin (to clear the liver) and a Laxative syrup to help clear her system of toxins.
Thankfully, a month later her recent liver tests came out great. But she has to stay on all these meds the rest of her life. I believe there is something toxic in a batch of Nutro Natural Choice. An investigation should be launched immediately. And a recall should be started too. I pray for all the dogs out there that have yet to get the bad batch of Nutro Natural Choice Dog Food. God help them. Where are you Nutro??? I thought your company had integrity??? I am very surprised at you.

We have 3 adult dogs (2 labs and 1 golden retriever). We switched to Nutro Natural Choice Adult breed chicken and brown rice several months ago. We had previously fed the dogs Pro Plan, but one of the labs had an allergy issue so decided to change food. Soon after, all 3 of the dogs started vomiting bile. It only happened once or twice a week, but these are dogs very seldom vomited before. We discussed this with our vet and he said exactly what a previous reviewer said, that it was probably caused by acid reflex on an empty stomach. The Nutro had been recommended by our puppy trainer (we raise puppies for Canine Companions for Independence), but after reviewing the various posts on this site and reading having the exact problems, something has definitely changed in the Nutro formula. We immediately threw out the remaining Nutro and are changing over to a different food.

All tests are indicating a toxin is the culprit for my dog’s death last night and the critical state my other dog is in. Diseases have been ruled out. No bacteria either. I have filed complaint with FDA. I have a pretty full 15 pound bag to be analyzed. My dogs had no access to other food other than the Nutro. I do not provide treats since they don't like them. Deceased was 4 years old and my other dog is 3. Both in good health until about a week after feeding them from a new bag of Nutro ultra small breed.
I bought it in August but had some left in bag so I did not open right away. The kibble is darker than the previous bags. They have been on Ultra two years. I am grieving. Nutro closed today so I can't share my pain and concern with them. I have about $5000.00 in vet bills so far since last Saturday when I first took Eli to the vet. I miss my little Eli. I hope Coco can make it. They are giving her plasma now.

My Shih Tzu Eli passed this evening and my Shorkie Tzu, Coco, is still in hospital. I am crying as I write this. Both have eaten Nutro Ultra small breed for two years. Late last week, we opened a new bag and it has gone downhill from there. Add in that the vet we were seeing did not take appropriate action and after several office visits this week, IV fluids and blood work for both, we have concluded that it must be the dog food. I am going to have it tested to leave no doubt. Eli was so precious. He was a rescue a couple of years ago and has been a blessing. We will miss him. I hope Coco makes it through. I can't lose her too.

We just bought a new bag 10 days ago and after a few days all four of our Maltese were sick with symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting, very unusual for them and all of them at one time???? Now, that's a bit much, so we knew there had to be a common factor. The only thing we can contribute it to is the new bag of Nutro dog food. We stopped feeding it to them today when we ran across all the complaints. So hopefully we will have a positive outcome. I am so sorry for those who didn't.

I switched my puppy to Nutro after we adopted him from a shelter two months ago. He has continued to have diarrhea and vomits at least once a day. It's sometimes his food which doesn't seem to be breaking down as it's whole or it's just stomach acid. I thought this was the best choice for my dog so I've been changing other things, like no treats, feeding less at a time but after reading all these other complaints, I'm returning my bag I just purchased and seeing what other options there are. If I have more health problems with my puppy Nutro will be hearing from me.

My 7 yr old Yorkie has been vomiting since Saturday, with bloody stools. Have spent almost 900 dollars trying to get him better. But after reading these complaints, I may have found the problem! He had been eating Nutro Naturals toy breed kibble, got sick, had been without dog food, just boiled chicken and rice. Seemed better after he got back from vet yesterday. Fed him Nutro canned turkey and rice sensitive stomach food, started with the vomiting and lethargy again this morning. I am so sorry to hear about the other fur babies having the same symptoms, even unto death. I think the company should take this seriously. Can't have this many different breeds in different states with the same problems, not a coincidence!

I adopted a Lab mix puppy and switched her onto Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice a few weeks after bringing her home. She started vomiting bile in the mornings and sometimes in the afternoons. I took her to the vet and was told she may have acid reflux or just be vomiting because her stomach was empty. I fed her smaller meals more often. She was still vomiting bile so she went on antacids. The medication did not help.
After watching my dog wretch and vomit almost daily for almost a year, I again consulted a vet. The vet wanted to do several tests, an endoscopy and a biopsy. This would have cost several thousand dollars. I decided to try a different diet first. I switched her onto another name brand food. Within a couple of weeks, she was no longer vomiting bile. She has now been vomit free for two months.
When I was taking her to the veterinarian for this problem, I told them I was feeding Nutro food. They said it was a great food and it was not the problem. I believe they were wrong. Something in this food is causing dogs to vomit bile. Obviously, not all dogs are affected. Nutro has thousands of happy customers. However, a small percent (including myself) had a bad experience.
I contacted Nutro with my story. At first it seemed they would be helpful but they quickly went on the defensive. They kept going on about their quality ingredients and their quality control. I do not doubt the quality of their ingredients. I doubt their research on how their ingredients affect all dogs. When I asked the agent if there has been any other cases like this and what their resolutions were, she declined to answer. She did not seem concerned about my situation because I had already switched my dog onto another brand food. I believe in her mind I was already lost as a customer so she was not open to helping me.
Consumers need to be informed. Something in Nutro dog food is causing a small percent of dogs to be ill. Research needs to be done to find out what it is. Veterinarians need to be informed that these symptoms can be related to Nutro dog food. I do not want any dogs to endure what my puppy had to go through.

I am so thankful that I did the research trying to see if any problems had been reported about Nutro dog food. I have a Mastiff 7 years old and a Chihuahua 6 yrs old. I have a two year old pug and two other small dogs. I bought a new bag of this food about a week ago from Petsmart. All dogs have been on this food for about 4 years without any problems. The pug started throwing up yellow, semi-digested food about three hours after eating this food. He also was moping. I stopped the food, gave him rice over the next few days, and he improved. Last night I again tried the Nutro food - he has now thrown up twice, is having chills, and looks miserable.
Another one of the dogs has developed loose stools. Is a virus or some infection that they have passed among themselves? Or is it the food? I think my level of suspicion is highest for the food. I will stop using it. I have had it with corporate America, mass produced dog food, and all the crap that gets put in the food to maximize profits. I am going to start making their own food at home as of today. Enough is enough. I also wonder if the epidemic of angiosarcoma in dogs is somehow tied to this manufactured food. There seems to be an inordinate number of dogs dying from this lethal cancer.

So we called the vet to take her in but by the time we went out to open the car door, she had died. I later, about 2 weeks, gave the leftover food, that was in a sealed container, to my Niece because she had a Mastiff and within a week of feeding the food, dog has died!! This is no coincidence!

I started changing my dog over to Nutro Natural Choice Limited ingredient Lamb and Rice formula dog food back in August. Mid August my dog had two seizures within a couple days of one another. She had never had seizures before. I gradually changed her over to all Nutro and noticed she just wasn't that interested in eating her food...seemed rather lethargic...not really like her normal self. When I took her to the vet, they said she had elevated liver enzymes which indicated some kind of toxicity.
She had been on JUST Nutro dog food for 3 weeks and she had two more seizures...within 15 hours of one another. Her next trip to the vet revealed normal blood work (so it COULD be epilepsy...right???) and she was started on phenobarbital. I have since read that rosemary oil/extract or rosemary of any form is TOXIC to pets (AND to humans in large quantities!!). It is a neurotoxin and can do great damage to the brain, causing seizures. The Nutro formula I had been feeding contains...you guessed it, ROSEMARY!!! I freaked and am going tonight to buy something different.

My 12-year old Siberian Husky was recommended to start a weight control diet. We chose Nutro Natural Choice over a supermarket brand thinking we were doing good by her. We were wrong. Within 5 days of starting the latest bag, she was vomiting and had diarrhea containing blood. She stunk to high heaven and was very lethargic. Upon a $700 visit to the vet for x-rays, blood work, etc., they decided she had enteritis and placed her on a special food along with antibiotics and probiotics. She recovered beautifully until.....
We reintroduced the Nutro Natural Choice last week (8/22/13) when the special food prescribed was finished. Here it is 1 week later and she is sick again, all the same symptoms. After tracing back, we discovered that 5 days after the start of this bag she was sick, and now same bag 1 week later sick again. I am very upset that there is no recall on this product. She may be a dog, but she is still our first baby and trying to do good for her is making her extremely ill and could have killed her! PLEASE RECALL THIS FOOD! My dog is a 3 year old Chihuahua mix. He's been eating this dog food for almost a year now. When I bought a recent bag last week (8/24/13), it looked different. The colors were off from the previous bags. That should've been my gut feeling not to feed it to my dog. He ate it for about a week and yesterday, he started vomiting. This morning, he had bloody diarrhea. Since I'm a nurse, I knew those weren't good signs and symptoms and I didn't want to take a chance to wait it out. I took him to the vet. Thank God all his blood tests came back normal and there's no pancreatitis. The vet said it has to be the food I bought. That's the only thing he eats. He prescribed him antibiotics and famotidine. Plus he got injections of fluids.
I can't believe this is happening. You hear about it on the news and hope to think it doesn't happen to your pet! Pets are not like kids. They can't talk to tell you where it hurts! If you see symptoms, you should take your pet to the vet to get them rehydrated, especially in smaller dogs. I will contact Nutro very soon! And as for Petco, I was able to return the food, but they will continue to sell it because they haven't heard any bad thing about the brand. I tried to explain to them, but they totally brushed me off!

I recently bought a bad batch of Nutro Max Puppy food. I have been feeding my 2 Papillons Nutro for months without incident. I love Nutro brand and used it for years with my Yorkie, who was a picky eater. I never had a bad experience until recently. I bought a bag a week ago and fed my dogs for 2 days before my female was vomiting and had diarrhea. I thought maybe she got a hold of something on our walks or maybe my little girl gave her something. She remained interested in our walks and was still active and interested in cuddling, but continued to have diarrhea for a couple days. I was still offering her the Nutro Max puppy and plenty of water and Pedialyte.
She started recovering after I stopped feeding her. I read about fasting her to clear the diarrhea. My male developed the same symptoms as my female was recovering. I stopped his food immediately and fast them both for 24 hours, then fed only boiled chicken and rice (bland meal). After 3 days of the several small chicken and rice meals several times per day, they both recovered.
I wasn't sure if they got a parasite of some sort or if it could have been something they ate. So, I fed my male the Nutro Max again once and his next bowel movement was diarrhea again. After consulting a Vet I was pretty certain it was a bad batch of food and not a parasite of any sort. I started the chicken and rice immediately again and my male's next bowel movement was normal again.
I called PetSmart and they of course offered to exchange the food but insisted that they had no other returns and wasn't aware of an issue or they would have pulled the Nutro from the shelves immediately. After my conversation with PetSmart, I decided to investigate further myself and searched "bad batch of Nutro dog food" and stumbled upon these 1476 complaints. Needless to say... I am on my way to PetSmart and will no longer trust my buddies (dogs) health in Nutro hands... Sadly enough.
