We have insured our 3 year old lab with Healthy Paws since we got her as a puppy. Their claims process is mostly easy and they really came through for us when she suffered an unfortunate accident resulting in dental injury that required multiple surgeries this year. They are pleasant to deal with and work to get your questions answered and claims processed in a timely manner. We would definitely recommend Healthy Paws to other pet parents!

Luckily I did, and one of the best decisions I ever made. Healthy Paws has been so incredibly easy to work with. Submitting a claim is really simple and I'm always surprised by how quickly I get a response, then updates, then a reimbursement check. My dog recently went through knee surgery and It was such a lifesaver to have Healthy Paws behind us every step of the way. I can't say enough about them. “Disbelief” is the only word that comes to mind when reading the poor reviews for Healthy Paws on this website. First, in response to the people complaining about increases in cost: it is common practice for insurance premiums to be adjusted based on the total amount of money the company spends on all claims within a given year. This is not specific to Healthy Paws; they are not out to get you.

Second, after much research, I chose Healthy Paws because I wanted to make sure that I was covered in case in the future, my dog needed some long-term and costly treatment, e.g., for reoccurring cancer. Healthy Paws is one of the few (or maybe only?) pet insurance companies that do not place a lifetime cap on any illness. In fact, there’s no yearly cap either. This means that they will continue paying for your pet’s treatment regardless of how much money they’ve already spent on that particular issue throughout the pet’s lifetime. As inhumane as it may sound, this is NOT true of MOST companies. Many insurance companies will not cover cancer that has reoccurred, or will only pay X amount of dollars towards the treatment of that particular type of cancer. I encourage everyone to look into this before choosing an insurance company.

That said, Healthy Paws DOES NOT cover routine vet care or any vet appointments, and they are up front about it. But really those things were, and still are, the least of my worries. Routine care you can plan for. And vet appointments, even with top specialists, are typically a one time thing (per illness) and a couple hundred dollars max. On the other hand, a single emergency surgery will be several thousand dollars, in addition to the dog-knows-how-much the diagnostic testing costs.

Now, third, my experience with this company has been nothing but WONDERFUL. I never EVER (ever ever) anticipated using my insurance plan as much as we have. I adopted my dog in 2017 at 2 years of age with no preexisting health conditions. In less than 2 years she ended up in the doggy ER twice: first time she broke her toe while running (freak accident), second time for multiple dog bites to the back of the head. Both times all I had to do was tell the front desk staff that we have pet insurance and fill out the form they gave me. Within a day or so I got an e-mail confirming the claim and then within 1-2 weeks I was reimbursed.

But that’s the small stuff. My dog’s body hates her. If she doesn’t do physical therapy consistently, she limps on her right front limb. Nothing I do at home compares to whatever magic they do at the PT place she goes to. Healthy Paws has been paying for her twice weekly PT sessions for over TWO YEARS now. But wait, there’s more.

Despite all this PT, about 1.5 years ago we found out she has a CCL tear (the doggy equivalent of an ACL tear in humans) and needed TPLO surgery. A week or so before her scheduled surgery my dog had a horrifying event in the middle of the night — to us it appeared to be something like a seizure but we later found out it was likely either a small stroke or something called a vestibular event. Long story short, we (well, the neurologist) had a just about 2 weeks to figure out what was going on so that she could be cleared for TPLO/knee surgery. This involved lots of bloodwork, sedation, an EKG, abdominal ultrasound, some brain monitoring thing, fluid to be pulled & tested from her spine, and most costly, a brain MRI (~$3.5k).

By the time I paid for everything up to the brain MRI, my credit card was almost maxed out. And since (thankfully) nothing notable showed up on any of those exams, she was still scheduled for TPLO surgery (~$5k) in less than one week. Upon panicking, a kind staff member at the animal hospital told me about something called a Direct Pay, in which the insurance company pays the hospital directly rather than reimbursing the client at a later time. So I called Healthy Paws to inquire about a Direct Pay for both the MRI and TPLO surgery. I’d called them on a Thursday; my dog’s MRI was scheduled for that following Monday and her TPLO two days after on Wednesday. I had a couple of back & forth calls with Healthy Paws over the weekend and by Monday, her MRI was paid for. They also agreed to pay, and subsequently did pay, for her TPLO that same week.

There’s still more: of course, a year or so after she recovered from TPLO surgery, she started puking all over the place, acting funny, etc. Long story short, over several months more and more costly tests followed, including an endoscopy and cystoscopy. This required general anesthesia and biopsies were taken during each. Every single thing that she had done, I got reimbursed for within a couple weeks max. No questions asked. We can go to any facility and see any doctor we choose and as long as the appropriate medical records are sent to them, Healthy Paws pays the claims.

I am writing this review now because last week, my pup had TPLO surgery on her other knee and again, Healthy Paws did a Direct Pay for us. At this time I knew the drill and it took nothing more than a couple e-mails. They even e-mailed us to check on her a couple days later — which is how I got the idea to write this review. I still simply can’t believe all the bad reviews/ratings on this website. I’m not saying there’s foul play or anything, but my experience with Healthy Paws has just been SO different and I am SO thankful that I signed up with them.

While it would be nice for Healthy Paws (probably like all pet insurance options) to be a bit more transparent upfront about what isn't covered (vaccinations, regular wellness checkups, and most annoyingly the checkup/consultation portion of what are otherwise emergency care visits), we've overall been quite satisfied. The website is user friendly and the reimbursements are prompt and painless.

The only issue we had was in uploading supplemental medical record files when they were requested. HealthyPaws said we could email them but then didn't acknowledge receiving them until we uploaded them a very specific way on our third attempt. This held up our initial reimbursement and was frustrating but we ultimately got past it. Most importantly though, our puppy Louie had a serious health scare at 7 months and Healthy Paws was there for us so we're very grateful and will continue using them.

Healthy Paws has been amazing. I was weary about getting pet insurance as I thought I might not need it but I sure have! My dog has severe allergies which require monthly ** injections and immunotherapy shots. He has torn both of his CCLs and we recently had an overnight hospitalization for eating something we shouldn't have. Healthy Paws reviews our claims SO QUICKLY, typically the day of submission or the day after and we typically have the reimbursement deposited into my account the next day. They are also extremely responsive to any and all questions. The monthly rate does go up but nothing crazy so far and so worth it to know that I can afford to give my pet the care he might need.

I was a customer for 5+ years and purchased policies for several pets. As others have said, their service is modern, fast, and easy to use. I was initially impressed and glad to have the peace of mind. Unfortunately, it seems that their approach is to hook you and then go after your wallet as aggressively as they possibly can. The prices they offer to new customers are very attractive. However, their premiums consistently increase 30-50% every year, so factor that into your decision when you sign up.

They also play games to reduce reimbursements. For example, their "deductible" is highly misleading. Unlike a standard insurance deductible that is based on all eligible expenses incurred, they take an unusual approach and only apply their copay % amount. (Let's say you select their 80% reimbursement / $500 deductible option... they will pay nothing until you exceed $625 in eligible expenses... which I am pretty sure most people would call a $625 deductible.) Lost my trust and lost my business.

Regardless of the cause they are denying any claim regarding diarrhea so if your dog has a chronic condition or just gets into something they weren't supposed to they will deny the claim due to the one episode of vomiting. I'm assuming they will now deny any issue that ever comes up even if years later involving the GI tract so be aware of how they operate and how aggressively they try to deny claims.

The worst issue is the huge increase in premiums this year. Two of our dog policies went up 50-60%. That is a completely unacceptable price increase. I feel there should be a law against this type of price gouging! I talked with the company and was given some excuse about pet claims in Missouri being really high last year. I don't buy the excuse! Premiums are high and constantly increasing even though you may never have a claim. When you make a claim they constantly present obstacles. For instance, I gave them all the medical information they requested and then they delayed about a week and asked me for the same information again and again. They appear to use stall tactics not to pay claims. When I call their claims number I have to wait on the line for an enormous amount of time. They answer the phone fast when you call about making a premium payment or when you are inquiring about taking out a policy with them. In my experience with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance they only want to take money in but they provide little to no claims service. Do yourself a favor and find pet insurance elsewhere with a company that has a good claims reputation. I would give them a zero star rating.

I chose this company based on word-of-mouth and due to them not having yearly or lifetime payout caps. After only two years, my healthy dog (minus some minor allergy issues) has seen an increase in the monthly premium amount by more than 50%! In two years! When I contacted the company I was told that this is because they are paying out more in claims than they are collecting in premiums in my area/state. Basically, my premiums are going up because of other people’s animals. From year one to year two there was a ~14% increase. From year two to year three, the increase was just under 40%!

While I can understand there being some increase each year, 40% in one year is ridiculous. I doubt I will keep my policy for another year. While the claims process is relatively easy and the get your reimbursement to you in a timely manner, Be Aware that your monthly premiums will Absolutely Increase Every Year. I am a very disappointed customer.

So if you buy their pet insurance, you can expect double digit increases when your pet hits senior age. Healthy Paws will tell you premium increases of any amount is within their legal right, that your state approved the increase, that they are just doing it cover their increasing costs. The sleazy part of pet insurance is that the consumer can't just switch companies because future insurance won't cover preexisting conditions, so I am stuck with the double digit increases despite how unfair it is. Moreover, they do gradual increases in the beginning making you feel as though they will continue to be affordable for the remaining of your pets life. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has been one of the greatest investments I have made for my 4 dogs. Without the policies, I would not have been able to afford the best care possible for them. From something minor, such as an ear infection, to a major surgery of a total hip replacement, Healthy Paws has allowed my dogs to live happy and healthy. Yes. The premiums increase every year. But that is to be expected, as premiums for human health insurance typically increase every year. Some years, the increase is more than expected, but even with the large increase, I had peace of mind knowing that had any medical scenario occurred, I could have my dog treated without the guilt of financial devastation.

My older German Shepherd (8 years of age) was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. Right in the policy documents, it clearly states that the pet must be enrolled in a policy prior to 6 years of age and not be diagnosed within a 1 year waiting period from enrollment date. She was diagnosed 16 months after enrollment and met the age requirement (enrolled at 5 years of age). This past year, she was showing severe lameness and pain in her hips. On her x-rays, the hip dysplasia had caused a fracture in her right hip. The best option was a total hip replacement.

The surgery was performed, I paid out of pocket (put on an empty credit card), and Healthy Paws started processing the quite large invoice (almost 5 figures). Yes. It took 3 weeks to process (would have probably been quicker had it not been over the holidays), but throughout the whole process, the representatives were nothing but reassuring and friendly. Healthy Paws has covered 90% of the surgery (as per my policy selection), in which I am forever grateful for this company. Had I not had insurance, or even had a different company, my dog would most likely be living out the last years of her life (which the vet estimated about 1 year in the condition of this hip) in complete and utter pain. I will never enroll any of my future pets with any other pet insurance company after this experience.

Stay Away! We got Healthy Paw Pet Insurance for our dog a few weeks ago. After two weeks my dog got a laceration on her ears that must have happened during the night and needed stitches. We went to the vet and they had to do surgery the next day. After filing the claim with them, they denied it calling it a preexisting condition. (The injury happened during the night or early morning our waiting time was over.) I understand a waiting period so people don't get insurance for a sick dog after the fact but this not ok. This company is not honest. I get insurance for my dog and get stuck with paying the premium and the $900? Not only that, they also do not count the money I already spent toward a deductible. This company is a scam.

The first claim I made was a disaster! After sending in ALL requested information, I received requests for MORE information! And, the company couldn't/wouldn't tell me WHAT information they still needed. We went back and forth...them. We need more information... (Too during this time, I kept receiving messages they were working on my "claim". I have 2 claims in to them. When I asked which claim, they couldn't/wouldn't tell me.) M. What do you need?... Them. We need more info... Me. What do you need/be specific...etc. So, I called their customer service. The clerk had a hard time finding any of my info. When she located it I told her I just needed to know what info they still needed. She said it looked like they had everything they needed. But 2 weeks later I was still only getting messages they needed more information... No closure on the claim!

So, I called again and wasted another half hr. dealing with this issue. This time I did speak with a supervisor. She apologized for all my frustration. When I asked her when she thought the claim would be complete, she stated THIS Afternoon!! Since their behavior has been typical of "scammers", I did warn her I would be going to another provider if there wasn't complete closure on both claims within the next 3 days. Too, I fully intend to pursue this through the FBI due to the legalities involved. And, I plan to warn as many as possible through social media, if the claims are not fulfilled promptly. Will let you know ASAP of any further developments. (ie. whether or not the supervisor kept her word.)

Every single time that I submit a claim with them, which is usually for minor things like ear infections, allergy shots, etc., they request that my vet send her ENTIRE medical history. This doesn't sound so bad when you have a 6 month-old puppy, but she is now 5 years old and her history is that much longer. She recently had to have emergency surgery for a hernia that appeared and quickly progressed. She has a vet that comes to the house, so I had to take her to an emergency hospital to be evaluated and then to a separate hospital for the surgery 2 days later. In between, her vet sent her a rx for antibiotics. This happened in August. It is now the 2 days before October and I've only received reimbursement for ONE claim. There are 3 claims in total.

She has no history with the other hospitals because she was referred to them strictly for the surgery. They have sent Healthy Paws everything they have requested and I've gotten nowhere with them for reimbursement of the claims. On top of that, I get random emails from them saying that they received line item descriptions for the claims, but need more info. The email has NO information what claim this is for or even the procedure, date or provider. When I asked about this email, they said it was a generic email that goes out, but I should not have received it. Huh?!

I have been on the phone with them 4 times in the past 3 weeks alone to get this sorted out and I'm getting absolutely nowhere. It seems like they are doing everything they can to NOT pay this claim. I signed up with them over 5 years ago as soon as my fur baby came home and she was still in perfect health, so there were no pre-existing conditions, etc. I'm at my wit's end and caution anyone to consider using them. The headache alone is worth reviewing others. I know that that they are not perfect because I had another one with my prior dog, but they were better to deal with. Horrendous! Just avoid. I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Our policy states that they cover all injuries including infections, bloodwork and x-rays. Well in submitting the claim it was rejected twice even after a manager told us to resubmit sending along medical records which described the repeated visit for the infected leg. They still rejected the claim so now the manager said he would appeal with all the time spent and lack of promised coverage. I would recommend shopping elsewhere.

I finally was approved at a fee I could work with. It would be tight on the home front but we were fine and our rescue dog Titian was feeling great! Thank You. I am so thankful. Every year, HP raises my premium, which is not unexpected, but the increases are obscenely steep, and just keep getting steeper. It started with a 20% increase, then 30%... and 4 years into our policies (2 dogs), we now have a 60% increase for each policy. It becomes prohibitively expensive. It is true that they never change your coverage amounts, but they increase your premium until you have no choice but to decrease your coverage and/or increase your deductible to bring the premium down to a more manageable amount. It’s clearly a strategy.

Of course, there will come a point that it will not be affordable at all, which is their goal. By that time, they don’t want to cover your pet any longer, because it’s older and presents a high risk for them. So, they get to brag that they will never reduce your pet’s coverage, or increase your deductible due to age, because they don’t...you do, because you can’t afford it otherwise. Incredibly disingenuous advertising. It’s true that HP has great coverage, and in my experience, they pay quickly, but none of that matters if you can’t afford the policy because they’ve forced you out.

Over a 5 year period my premiums for 2 labs went up 200% with 2 claim between them. One was recent and I had to appeal claim to get blood work covered that was ordered for a protein issue. They base your deductible on your percentage of coverage: ie a $500 claim does not totally apply to your deductible, only 90% does (if that is your coverage) or $450 of the $500. They charge your premium the day before which is fine unless you are canceling coverage which I did.

Supervisor asked me to wait 7-10 business days for refund of $155.75 (that is what my premium was up to for 2 dogs). He gave me his personal email. I sent numerous emails and did not hear back from him. Responses came from info@healthypaws... I waited a month! He wouldn't contact me and the 2nd supervisor said they were working on it! I was a customer for a couple years. This past year with filing claims, the company has been increasingly difficult to deal with and now are not covering expenses which are covered by the plan. I submitted a claim for my dog with a urinary tract infection and as part of the illness visit, the vet ordered basic labs. Healthy Paws refused to cover the labwork citing they don't cover "wellness/ preventative labs". I noted that these were not preventative labs but ordered due to an acute illness. But healthy paws didn't budge stating this was what they determined. So for a 350 dollar vet bill I only received 80 dollars.... I wouldn't care that much but to deny coverage for labwork that should be included is terrible.

When I contacted them they could not care less and just gave a rote response "It was deemed by the insurance adjuster this was not covered" and if I wanted to appeal it I would have to bother my vet to write a letter discussing why they ordered the labwork.. I dread the time when I'll submit a claim for an actual large amount given they are nickel and diming over such petty amounts. (I already pay $600/year in insurance premiums.) I would strongly recommend another pet insurance carrier that honors their coverage. Expensive premiums, minimal coverage and unfortunately they won't even cover expenses they claim they will.

When you get quotes from pet insurance companies Healthy Paws will stand out and look affordable and like it's the best deal you can get. Policies can start at $35+/month. What they don't explain or state anywhere is how much that premium will increase year over year. How convenient. In your second year your premium will increase 15%-20%. So factor that into your math when you look at getting the policy with them in the first place. As others have stated they won't even notify you that this increase has taken place. You will just see that higher number charged to your card without warning. My plan increased by 16% and this is only my second year with Healthy Paws. Can't imagine how much it will increase next year.

Again, as I've read in other reviews here, when you ask them they will respond with a canned answer that the premium increase is because of the state you're in or that pet policies in general are "getting more expensive." It's seriously a bunch of BS. Just an excuse to steal your money. Deceptive company who doesn't care about your pets. They just care about getting your money and tricking you. They get you in on an "affordable" number/cost, then gauge you every year after that. Here's an example of what this insurance would cost over a 10-year period, based on a premium of $51 (90% reimbursement), + an increase of 15%/year And that is likely on the very low end of what your actual increase will be. It could be an increase of 20% every year based on the other reviews I've seen here.

    Monthly cost + 15% increase
    ----------------
    Year 1 $51.00
    Year 2 $58.65
    Year 3 $67.45
    Year 4 $77.56
    Year 5 $89.20
    Year 6 $102.58
    Year 7 $117.97
    Year 8 $135.66
    Year 9 $156.01

    Year 10 $179.41

    Annual cost + 15% increase
    ----------------
    Year 1 $612.00
    Year 2 $703.80
    Year 3 $809.37
    Year 4 $930.78
    Year 5 $1,070.39
    Year 6 $1,230.95
    Year 7 $1,415.59
    Year 8 $1,627.93
    Year 9 $1,872.12

    Year 10 $2,152.94

Lifetime cost: $12,425.88. TWELVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. That's $12k that could go towards any accident that you are worried will happen during your pet's lifetime. Be informed and don't trust Healthy Paws and their BS.

I can’t stress this enough. Please don’t get this insurance. I got my first pet and decided to get him insurance for the unpredictable. So first of all through out his first year nothing was covered. No emergencies, no meds, no nothing. My dog hit 10 month and was diagnosed with something called a “crypto” which means one of his testicles didn’t descend making it very dangerous and possibly life treating if left untreated.

In their policy is says they cover for this type of issues because is a hereditary problem. I called and asked and they reassured me. Yes they do cover for it so I felt safe to pay out of pocket because I was going to get Reimburse but it Turns out they didn’t cover it and I was left to pay $900 of the full bill. I tried to dispute the issue and called and emailed them until they finally accepted to pay BUT what they did was they applied my deductible and ended up Only reimbursing me $37 out of the $900 which didn’t make any sense because my coverage was supposed to be 70%.

ANOTHER THING. They will raise your monthly every year. Mine went from $74 to $85 (keep in mind this is for ONE PET ONLY). I thought it was pretty ridiculous and their explanation didn’t make sense either. They told it was based on my state. I got my pet insurance to feel safe and covered In case of an emergency or things like this and it turns out I been paying every month to not be covered at all. I could have saved ALL THIS MONEY I’m paying them FOR HIS ACTUAL emergency surgery. I’ve wasted my money $910 to be exact In total paying them monthly for a year to have NO COVERAGE. I pretty much ended up paying double. I could have use those $910 I payed them throughout the year for his actual $900 surgery. I spent $1800 in total. Thanks Healthy Paws! I spent months following up on this promise to which Healthy Paws kept apologizing for the delay in providing documentation, but in the end, no documentation was ever provided.

Their re-imbursements are pathetic and they make you jump through insane hoops to get the tiny percentage of the total cost back. You are better off just opening a savings account for your dog and adding 20-50 bucks every month. This is seriously one of the most backwards rip off companies I have been unfortunate to do business with.

We have had HPPI for 3 years. This year the claim increased by 30%. When I called to ask why, they said that the amount of claims in my state have increased therefore my premium must as well. From their email "Your rates never increase for filing a claim." So, my rates won't directly increase because of any claims filed but because others file claims as well, your premium will increase. Once I brought this up to the customer service agent, she immediately wanted to have a manager call me back. From reading some of the recent reviews on here, at least 3 other people in different states are increasing as well.

Second, when I asked to cancel my policy, she immediately wanted to have a manager call me back again. I said no, please cancel my policy. She then said my policy will be cancelled on 3/15 because I am paid through that day. I said, "No, please cancel immediately, pro-rate my premium and refund me now." Their policy is to cancel at end of billing cycle unless specifically asked to cancel immediately.

Third, I spent 31 minutes on the phone with this. 15 minutes of that was asking for a manager. There were no managers available immediately and one will call me back in 24-48 hours. Lastly, my husband and I were on the fence about keeping pet insurance. We decided that with the amount of money that we would be spending on pet insurance ($65 per month x 12 months= $780 per year) that we would just pay the expenses as they arise.

Hope this information helps. Manager did call back, she was highly competent and was able to better explain why the premium increase (they need to make sure they have enough money to cover themselves), apologized for the unpleasant experience and reassured me that this would be brought up in their monthly meeting (doubtful but she tried).

I’ve had this insurance since adopting my Chihuahua puppy. So about 4 years. My rates went up slowly in those 4 years. Maybe $1 or 2 monthly if at all. I made my first minor claim. The bill was almost $400 but after my $100 ded and everything they don’t cover (vaccine and office visits) I got $65. It was fast and easy. I got the direct deposit in my account literally in 2 days after filing the claim. So I give them credit for that BUT my rate jumped up almost $10 a month after that. Now it’s kind of become pointless. I’d rather open up a safety net credit card for any medical bills from this point on. It’s only $10 but $40 a month was pretty steep. Now we are talking $50? I’m considering shopping around or cancelling. I’m not sure if their practice is to hike up your rate after claims. I’m afraid to find out how high it will go.

I got Healthy Paws Insurance when my dog was less than a year old and had one claim when he was about 2 years old for $900. Since then I have had zero claims and my premium has steadily risen from about $45 a month when I started to about $60 roughly 7 years later (not terrible in my mind). However when I updated my address in their app (As a military member I move around a lot) they had a notification of what your premium IS and what it WILL BE based on your new address, It stated it IS $60 and WILL BE $60, (exact same amount) so I agreed (I absolutely made a note of this). Apparently however, the next day they took it as an opportunity to raise my premium to $159 PER MONTH and not tell me (I found out later from my card statement).

When I told them I never agreed to that amount and to show me when they notified me of the increase, they basically said, "we sent an email on....oh wait, sorry we forgot to notify you". They then said management would contact me. Management (Kyle **) waited 3 days to email me and then said "sorry you didn't notice that we notified you of the increase on... (on the date I called THEM to complain about the increase. lol)" to which I replied I need to speak to HIS manager to get to the bottom of this since me getting a charge on my Credit Card doesn't count as notification and you can't just claim someone was ignorant and wash your hands of the issue. I've been wrong before but I wanted some proof they actually notified me of the increase. He has since ignored my email for the past 4 days.

Lesson learned - They can and will increase your premiums 300% as your dog gets older no matter the number of claims you have (or have not) made and furthermore will ignore you when they make a mistake (or perhaps they purposefully increase your premium until you drop your coverage, in-order to get out of paying senior dog medical bills).

*PS I have made no demands for anything other than reimbursing me the ONE month they charged me without telling me about the increase, so I'm NOT trying to get free things by complaining. I'm just mostly against a company being able to charge you whatever they want without explanation or telling you or jack up your rates as your dog gets older, as it is borderline theft.

I am a vet tech and currently a 3rd year veterinary student. I have had this insurance since 2017. It has been wonderful up until the past 6-10 months. They have changed their customer service to what seems like a third party company of robots. I lost my beloved 1.5 yr old cat in January and submitted claims this past week on his final invoices. He had Type 1 diabetes and I am so thankful I had signed him up ASAP as a kitten before this showed its face. They were great with refunding claims quickly back in August 2019.

However, since November it seems to have become slower and now it’s just straight underpayment. They are claiming my subtotal is $602 when in fact it was $834 clearly stated on invoice. My clinic offers payment plans and I get a student discount which is also stated for the less value on invoice. I thought this would be a simple error and fix. NO. It’s been 15-25 min of waiting to speak to someone. Waiting 24-48 hours for call from claims specialist who called 45 min after scheduled time. I missed her call, immediately called back and was only able to wait 10 min on hold. I called again this morning and again have to wait 24 hours for call back.

I used to be able to speak with a real person that wasn’t on a script. Now it’s, "I understand ma’am but our policy states...." blah blah blah. It’s weird. They all have the SAME exact voice. Not fair they get the frustration in my voice because the company’s policies are unfair to human beings. My cat died. I don’t want to go through this circus. I have emailed all the options I’ve found online. I am just waiting for callback which is truly the worst part. Waiting to have my side heard. I have 6 animals on my policy. I do not feel valued in the slightest. With the preexisting statutes I feel trapped with keeping the policy. I just hope I can make progress with giving my feedback to company.

I am a registered veterinary technician, I have been working in the vet field for 10 years now. I did a lot of research when I chose an insurance company, and I didn't start out with Healthy Paws, but I liked that they offered no lifetime maximum caps on coverage. Anyway. I've been with HP since 2016. I have never had issues with them until the last 6 months.

I adopted a puppy from the shelter in the beginning of September 2019. I decided to put her on insurance ASAP, because puppies like to get into everything. There is a 2-week waiting period, where they won't cover anything. That's fine, most insurance companies do. 6 weeks after I purchased my policy (the middle/end of October), my puppy was given hot dog treats at her puppy training classes for "high value, high reward" type training, and immediately that night had diarrhea. Horrendous upset stomach and she had to go every 2-3 hours. The vet did some diagnostics to rule out intestinal parasites, prescribed antibiotics, recommended bland diet, probiotics, etc. At that point, HP approved the claim and applied everything to my deductible.

Well, 2 weeks after that (in November), she had another round of diarrhea because she decided to dig up and eat a plant in our backyard. Another course of antibiotics, etc. I submitted this claim to HP to apply to my deductible again, however, this time they denied the claim saying that this is a "pre-existing condition" since it happened "during her waiting period," the waiting period that had ended AT THE BEGINNING OF OCTOBER - AND after they had covered everything the first time!

I emailed the claims department back multiple times, and never heard anything from them! In their automated emails, it states to reach out to the "Department of Insurance, Consumer Services." Before I pursued that, I was finally able to call HP customer support, and the lady on the phone agreed that she doesn't understand why the claim was denied, or why my puppy was marked as having a "pre-existing condition" during her waiting period that had clearly ended well before the first incident of diarrhea. She put in an appeal, but I haven't heard anything in 4 weeks - I never even got an email that the claims I put in were being reviewed again or in the appeal process. I honestly doubt that they will be thoroughly reviewed - that is how much faith I have lost in this company.

I've already begun the process of filing a complaint with the Department of Insurance. I have read my policy front to back, and I believe they are blatantly committing fraud at this point so that whenever my puppy has diarrhea in the future, they will never cover it. She was never even given an official diagnosis! Her medical records just state "diarrhea." What that means is that HP has marked her "pre-existing condition" as diarrhea, so they will NEVER cover anything related to diarrhea! Whether it's an actual health condition or if she gets into something she's not supposed to - things that could potentially be out of my control! They won't cover it regardless of the source of diarrhea, even though it happened outside the waiting period!

I have given 2 stars for this review because I have another pet on with this insurance company, and I have had no issues with his policy, and they have covered multiple vet bills that were needed for him. I did receive an email from them at one point stating that if he had any pre-existing conditions they would stop covering his vet bills - mind you this email was sent to me in 2019, and I've had coverage for him since 2016.

Now he actually does have skin allergies that were around before I obtained this policy, and I understood from the beginning that they wouldn't cover those issues for him. But he had been having orthopedic issues and a cough that he had never had before, which is why I started seeking vet care and submitting claims for him in 2019. So receiving that email was concerning to me. They have covered everything with him so far, but after seeing what has been decided for my new dog, I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped covering him too and claim that he also had some sort of "pre-existing condition" as well. I am very disappointed in this malpractice and blatantly being ignored by the claims department in this issue.

I had recently switched her over to Healthy Paws. When I put him on the policy, everything seemed fine. He is currently only 2 years old oh, and I got him his policy when he was five months old. My rates have been going up so much each year this year I inquired as to why the drastic hike.

I was given a bunch of excuses about living in California, their company was bought out so they started my older dog's policy all over again at a higher rate, etc. I was pretty infuriated. I then logged on to my account and noticed that they had documented my pup, who is currently two years old, as being three years old and have been charging me for an older dog. Once I brought this to their attention, they told me they needed his medical records and birth information. After about two to three weeks of pushing me off, not taking my calls, and being barraged with his documentation by my vets, they finally complied and changed his birthday to the correct one.

Unfortunately, they felt that's all they needed to do. I told them they owed me adjustments for all those monthly payments that they had overcharged me. They then sent me an e-mail trying to blame me for writing down a fictitious, inaccurate birthdate, making him an older dog. Seriously? Who would ever list their dog as an older dog? Why, so that I could pay more for my dog insurance?! This company is a total sham and I have taken action. I highly recommend that you avoid them, they are highly unethical and dishonest.

They will cover small amounts, but then when you get referred to a specialist, then they try and say preexisting condition and won't reimburse you like they are supposed to. Don't fall into the trap like me.

If you ever taken your pet for anything prior to having insurance, they will try to link it to anything going on and deny you benefits. If your pet has never been to the doctor for anything, then it might be ok. HealthyPaws is a sick joke, I would never recommend them to anyone or their pet that I care about. I am writing to pat this insurance company on the back. What would I do without you? It was the most horrendous year of my life, and without Healthy Paws, I would really be up a creek. In Nov. 2019, my 6 year old dog, Polly, was diagnosed with IVDD and had extensive tests. Sadly, after working with her for several weeks, she was making no progress and had to be put down. That was SO hard, and HP came in to help with the lion's share of my bills.

Not much later, I got another small dog so that my more senior dachshund/terrier wouldn't be lonely. This sweet little dog and my older girl were in dog crates in the back of my car on the way to a happy day at the dog park. The day was cut short when someone ran a red light and plowed into the right rear quarter panel of my car. The little pup wasn't covered, and though we tried valiantly to save her, she sustained too many injuries to survive. My older girl was in ICU for a week and had her spleen removed... most of which HP paid for. I would not have been able to do all I did for my surviving dog without HP. It took a while to take on another dog... I was in mourning for quite some time after the wreck, but I did get a new girl finally, Abby. I made sure she was covered by HP!

After a month or so, we noticed she was losing weight drastically. After several tests, it turned out she wasn't producing enough Pancreatic enzymes. She's now on medication that she'll need the rest of her life, and once again... Thanks to HP I can take proper care of her. More recently, my older girl was diagnosed with a ruptured salivary gland. You guessed it - more tests and surgery!

So, for the past year and a half, Healthy Paws has been like an invisible friend that helps my pups when the chips are down. They pay quickly and rarely flinch when I turn in my paperwork. They will always be my insurance company of choice! I dinged them one star for the $500 deductible and for not covering office visits. But, gosh... just wanted to thank them from the bottom of my heart for being there for us. It's been the worst year and a half of my life and could have been so much worse!

I have had good experience with them paying small claims. $200 at most, and they're paid promptly. My dog just had her first real issue. Vomiting blood. Possible parasite. Had to be hospitalized for 24 hrs. $2k total bill. CLAIM DENIED. This is absolutely NOT an exclusion listed on the policy. This is the POINT OF AN INSURANCE POLICY - to cover unpredictable medical expenses that arise from unpredictable health events. I am have now been on hold for over 30 minutes and I doubt I will get through. If they do not retract their denial and pay this I will report them to the Department of Insurance.

We’ve had Healthy Paws for 10 months to cover our Golden Retriever puppy. Unfortunately, we’ve had to file a number of claims this year due to multiple UTIs and cases of giardia. We were shocked when we received notice that our premium was increasing 45% after our first year ($55/month to $80/month). Our neighbors have a two-year-old Golden Retriever (same breed, same zip code) and he was much healthier this year. Their Healthy Paws premium increase was only 14% ($48/month to $55/month).

The Healthy Paws states that premium increases are based solely on breed, zip code and age, and not on claim submissions. Based on our experience this is clearly false marketing. I have been trading emails with them this week trying to understand how they justify a 45% increase, and I have only gotten generic responses to the effect of “increasing costs of new technology,” “advances in veterinary care”, and “changes in policies”. Conveniently, last week, they removed the line “Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims” from the website. If you choose Healthy Paws and you need to file claims be prepared to be penalized with excessive annual increases. We had budgeted to spend about $650/year for pet insurance, and after a year to keep our same policy/coverage they expect us to pay almost $1,000/year.

They conveniently lose your pet's medical records and are not proactive to tell you what they need, and are too lazy to reach out to the vet to request them. Don't expect them to reach out if they need something for your claim. They will just pretend it doesn't exist and you will have to contact them ten times with the same information. Don't use them. We have never had any major claims with this company, and most years do not even meet our deductible, for which I am very thankful...our dogs are healthy. However, in the past the company paid our small expenses promptly and accurately. Over the last two years, service has deteriorated, claims have been lost in their system, and they routinely deny charges. Now, you can’t even talk to a company employee, calls go to a foreign service center and are answered by employees who can’t even pronounce the names of diseases or medical conditions, much less discuss why they were denied. I was told I would have to send in my vet’s notes. In the past the company communicated with the vet. I would not recommend this company to anyone. Customer service is nonexistent. Our premiums have doubled, don’t fall for their claims that they don’t routinely raise premiums.

Now one year later the premium was raised to $51.76 per month. That is a 24% increase!!! To make matter worse, the same coverage for the same age and breed of dog would currently cost a NEW subscriber only $39.66 per month. When I questioned this, they just gave me double talk saying if I cancelled and re-enrolled I would have to worry about pre existing conditions... It is clear this company takes advantage of current clients. DO NOT DEAL WITH HEALTHY PAWS, by the time your pet may actually need it, the premiums will have become unaffordable.

This company for all their stated good intentions is a disorganized mess. Some examples:

    - Two claims for different pets we adopted at the same time and provided the company the same medical information when we joined. After boarding they came down with similar conditions at the cost us nearly $1,000. One was covered and one was not. No logic to that.

    - The telephone line is open two hours longer if you want to sign up than if you want to deal with a claim. Real customer focus.

    - One day I called twenty minutes before their claims line closed. I was on hold for over 1 ½ hours before hanging up. My guess is that the staff stopped answering calls so they could go home on time.

    - They do not cover examinations. I naively thought that meant annual wellness exams. No, it means every time you got to the vet with your sick pet. So, what you will pay is your annual premium + deductible ($250 for each dog in our case) + your vets basic examination fee ($51 each visit on our case). After that they pay 80% of allowable treatment. In our case that meant we would have to pay over $800 per pet before seeing any reimbursement. Oh, and if that is not enough, you must submit medical records of your pet or bear the cost of a wellness exam within a short time of signing up (or have a one year waiting period)! Our dogs were adopted and all we had was shot records and lab tests. They accepted that for one dog and not the other.

I could go on about their claims process and how documents disappear into their system and do not appear to be read by the staff. Talking to people is the only way to get action but if they must speak with someone else, your chances of payment diminish greatly. They do not seem to accept emails.

Their customer service calls now go to a call center in the Philippines, where the people are difficult to understand and not helpful.

We are going to be filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau over their lack of follow through. The many positive reviews on Healthy Paws is one of the reasons I signed. It seemed very straightforward, however, my experience is far from the review I posted below, in fact my review is the complete opposite of this so called "breeze". As a healthcare provider I communicate with medical insurance companies daily and that's a breeze compared to this company. Healthy Paws required an exam on your insured within the last 12 months, well I had a thorough examination performed on my pup within days of signing with Healthy Paws (around end of April beginning of May)and no issues found. In September we found a growth on the upper inside lid of my pups eye and it was only detected because of his eye tearing so we brought him to the vet for exam. Turns out it needs removal and sent for labs due to being a Golden Retriever. Well 600+ later the growth was benign, thankfully and now I go to file my claim.

I send in the bill and now Healthy Paws wants every single record from the time I brought my pup initially home, (very different from just send in your bill) we're talking over five years. Even though the examination performed showed no signs of anything they still required records. Even after sending in Dr.'s SOAP Notes including bills I keep receiving the same redundant email that we need the Dr's SOAP notes, so frustrating. When you try and call the reps are obviously foreign and basically following they're flow chart of questions. I was lucky enough to actually speak to a supervisor and he informed me that they needed more notes for Luke in fact like I said everything from the time he joined our family. So now they have every single note on my pup and going on 30 days since filing the claim. So if your looking into healthy Paws I would disregard statements/reviews as posted below as very untruthful and misleading!

REVIEW: "Filing claims with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is a breeze. You simply take a picture of your veterinary bill and upload it to the website or through the Healthy Paws app. The vast majority of claims are processed within two business days. Keep in mind that your coverage only kicks into action 15 days after you sign up with Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. If you are seeking treatment for hip dysplasia, then the waiting time until you can file a claim is 12 months".

I started with Healthy Paws in 2016 insuring a (4) year old, 45 lb mixed lab. I was told annual rates would increase a minor amount and only due to inflation. This was false. My dog's renewal for 2020 (turning age 7) is going from $44.79 per month to $60.91 per month, an increase of $193.44 annually. This is a 36 percent increase. Healthy Paws will increase your rates until it is unaffordable. Their advertising on rates is simply untrue. Much better option is to put $100 monthly in an account for your pet and self insure.

As an aside I've not filed a claim and paid my bills on time. Just a guy who wanted insurance for my dog at reasonable cost. Be aware, when they tell you the deductible is a certain dollar amount, they mean that it's a Benefit dollar amount, not an actual out of pocket amount. For example, I have an 80% plan with a $500 deductible. I submitted a claim for $23. They processed the claim by calculating 80% of the amount ($18) and applied the $18 to the deductible. Not the $23 that I paid out of pocket. So, a $500 deductible is actually a $625 deductible. I've read over my insurance certificate multiple times and can't find the language of how this is determined anywhere. After 32 years in the insurance industry, I can't recall a single instance where this is how it's done. I'm not saying they aren't entitled to make a contract determination, but the language should be much cleared up front and the contract significantly clearer. Incredibly deceptive.

    Reviewed Sept. 25, 2019

I’ve had almost nothing but good experiences with Healthy Paws and I want to address some of the complaints in the one star reviews. Firstly, I signed up my puppy, Sammy, two weeks after we got him at four months old. My husband and I had been researching insurance companies and Healthy Paws came up time and time again as the best value for money in terms of cost and reimbursement. This was 2.5 years ago.

The day I registered Sammy he began exhibiting signs of Parvovirus, and we had to take him to the emergency vet. He was in intensive care and quarantined for 4 days. It was touch and go for a while as to whether he would survive. He made it through and we ended up paying over $3,000 for the treatment. Healthy Paws did not reimburse me and I didn’t file a claim because I read all the terms and conditions. It clearly states that there is a waiting period, and all other limitations are outlined on the website. Anyone who took their pet to the vet within the first few weeks of the waiting period (a waiting period that is perfectly reasonable as to avoid preexisting issues, which the company clearly states it doesn’t cover) and writes that they were shocked at being denied a claim is either illiterate or lying. It clearly states online what is and isn’t covered and in what time period.

My monthly premium is $31.95. My yearly deductible is $250. And my reimbursement rate is 80%. While I don’t think this is a steal, I think it’s a reasonable price. Compared to other insurance costs and reimbursement levels I think this is one of the best deals out there. I will admit that I haven’t looked into new insurance companies since I signed Sammy up two years ago so it is possible that there is something better out there now, but I haven’t heard about it.

Do I wish that preexisting conditions were covered? Of course I do, but find me a single pet insurer that covers preexisting conditions and I will pay for your pet’s insurance for the rest of their lives. Do I wish that the cost of the vet visit was covered, sure I do. According to the company it’s so that it can keep its premiums low and offer the higher payout rate. I can suck it up when the vet costs $60, but when you see a specialist or emergency vet the office visit cost is often a lot higher (our emergency vet cost around $200 and dermatologist for Sammy cost around $300).

There are other things that aren’t covered, but these are clearly laid out online. I think that many other insurance firms have similar limitations (no preexisting conditions, no preventative trips like vaccines and neutering). Two things that they don’t cover that I wish they did (and I don’t know how this compares with other companies) are prescription food and behavioural issues. I understand that things like training would be difficult to cover, but seeing a dog behaviourist and other treatments for anxiety and fear issues is something I believe should be considered on a case by case basis.

That being said, Healthy Paws has been a lifesaver. Every insurance company has a deductible (for humans and animals alike). I’m not sure why some people felt it was appropriate to give the company 1 star for this when there are literally no other alternatives. No company offers a $0 deductible. I’m our case, Sammy has come down with every illness possible. If your dog swallows something, x-rays will cost you around $500 or more (at my vet in Chicago at least, and they are by no means the most expensive). One incident like that and your deductible is met AND you get 80% of the rest back.

I disagree with people who say that you’d be better off putting aside $30 a month and covering costs out of pocket. That’s $360 a year and wouldn’t even cover Sammy’s x-rays (which we had to pay for more than once in a year). Blood tests are hundreds of dollars. Travel sickness pills are $70 for 4 pills. Medicated shampoo and medicated mousse or powder for skin issues can run around $50 a bottle. If your pet has any type of skin or food allergy it can cost you thousands of dollars doing food trials, blood tests, x-rays, allergy tests and paying for allergy pills. Trust me, we’ve been through it all.

If your pup gets an infection or is vomiting from an upset tummy, a course of medication can cost a couple of hundred. Yes, if you have a super healthy pet that never has any accidents and only goes to the vet once a year for vaccines then you’ll probably pay more in premiums than you’ll get back. But if your dog breaks a bone or has to have any kind of testing or operation or (god forbid) gets cancer, the insurance will pay for itself. Yes, you never know and you might not need it but why take the risk if you truly love your pup? What if they need a $3000 operation you can’t afford?

I can honestly say that without Healthy Paws I’d be bankrupt. I ended up with a sickly pup, but I would recommend this company to everyone. And the reason I was prompted to write such a long review is because last week my card got declined. I made the payment and my account seemed to be active, but yesterday I received a letter saying it would be terminated next month due to non payment. I sent an email to Healthy Paws and got a reply within 12 hours confirming that my account was active. Just to make sure, I called them today and after reading these reviews I was expecting a long wait. Nope, I waited on hold for less than 10 minutes, spoke to a very helpful associate who confirmed all my account details and reassured me that everything was up and running. Perhaps the people waiting for 2 hours are calling on a Sunday morning?

In terms of the claims, the only time I had an issue was with the very first claim. When I sent the claim I was told they couldn’t pay out without Sammy’s full medical records (that’s understandable). I had the vet send them over. When I tried to go back to the claim I had left it too long and it was “closed.” I am under the impression that they do give you a reasonable amount of time to follow up (I was a bit slow and looked into it again two months later).

Instead of giving up and writing a bad review, I resubmitted the claim. They again told me that they needed medical records so this time I emailed the medical records and claim directly to them. I received a check in the mail within a couple of weeks. I then changed my reimbursement method to direct debit. Since then, I’ve used the app to submit all claims and never had an issue. I’ve submitted about 10 claims in one go (from the previous 12 months) and never had an issue. The direct deposits appear within 2 weeks every time. Whenever I’ve had a query I’ve simply emailed and they’ve been very quick to respond.

As someone who has claimed thousands of dollars in medical bills, I have NEVER had an issue with non payment. I feel like I am uniquely qualified to write this review as in his second year Sammy was at the vet every month. Now we’ve figured out his allergies and while I wish that Healthy Paws covered some prescription food, we have to pay $100 in injections every month. Getting $80 of that back every month is a lifesaver.

TOO LONG DIDN’T READ: I would 100% recommend this company. I feel like most of the bad reviews are user error and a lack of understanding on how insurance companies are. I doubt you will find a better value for money insurer. I especially love the ease of submitting claims through the app by taking a picture of the receipt, and getting a reimbursement the next week. If you can find a better insurance company for pets, I will eat my hat.

Instead, they denied the claim, stating they did not have the medical records when I know that the records have been sent to them numerous times. I have even sent them myself. They are a total scam. Do not give them a dime. They will not help your pet.

I don’t know what to do with my old dog with cancer. New pet insurance won’t cover previous problems. Maybe Healthy Paws cancelled us since one of my dog has a cancer and using insurance to have surgeries. I don’t recommend Healthy Paws.

Updated on 08/09/2019: I posted a review a few hours earlier today. As a follow up, I finally got to speak to someone who was able to answer my questions on how to hopefully get my claims paid. It was 1hr 33 minutes before my call was answered. And an additional 17 minutes before I was able to get off the phone. All totaled...1hr 50min 2 seconds. And I still have to resubmit my claims. During the call the woman told me she has a lot of "pet parents" complain due to long wait times and slow or frustrating claim processing and that the people I had spoken to before today were no longer working there so Monday I will resubmit all of my claims to hopefully be paid. Then I will be running as fast as I can to another company. Ridiculous.

I have 2 dogs insured thru Healthy Paws. I have repeatedly submitted claims for emergency treatments on one of my puppies. These claims date back to January 2019. I have been told my claim is closed due to a lack of medical record submission. Every time I have called the wait is 30 to 40 minutes. As of this moment I've been on hold for 48 minutes. When someone did answer he was unable to help me with a claim even though I pressed all the right buttons. So, they keep taking my money every month and refuse to pay my claim. I'm told if I cancel my policy my claims will be permanently closed and I have no chance of ever recovering any of my money. WORST SERVICE EVER!

I signed up for their pet coverage for my mixed breed dog, with no preexisting conditions, when she was under 1 year old. The premiums were raised considerably every year and she is only 4 years old now, and still healthy. The plan doesn't cover office visits, preventative care, etc. So unless your pet has a catastrophic injury or illness it is not worth it. Better to put the same amount for monthly premium into a savings account.

When I originally signed up, I was assured that premium increases would be modest. Last year, they incorrectly charged my credit card and had to issue me a refund. Read all of the info on their website and then if you have questions, call for clarification. I signed up my girl at 8 weeks of age. I have had no problem getting them to pay. At one point, it was a bit slow when they needed to hire more people, but after that period it has been fine. I had Trupanion for one of my last dogs and the "Per incident" deductible sucks. Luckily, Lucas (the dog) had been serviced by Healthy Paws for over a year and we felt comfortable with the claim process. Usually these insurances are reimbursement based, but because it was such a large amount, I talked to a HPPI representative and was able to get them to pay their part up front (90%!) and I ended up paying only $500 for my dog's pre-surgery consult, surgery, and post-surgery check! And, because of their unlimited lifetime claims (unlike other providers) I have no worries that I am going to run out of insurance money as he ages (since he's just a pup). Overall wonderful service. I have been with Healthy Paws for about 4 years now. I pay $90 something a month for 4 of my 6 cats. The only time this insurance proved to be any worth is when one of my cats had a UTI and a blockage which required an emergency vet overnight stay. Other than that with the $100 deductible, we don't cover vet exam, don't cover a plethora of meds, and then 70% copay. I have submitted claims for $300 and gotten maybe $20 back.

They have this God-awful app. I submit a claim. The following day I get a notification that they have no health records. Even though I've had my vet(s) fax and I've emailed several times and received confirmation the records were received. So I call and they confirm they have the records and to disregard that message. Then I get an email saying that they didn't get the invoice I uploaded on the app. I resend that. Then 2 days later the app asks that I sent the invoice for a 3rd time. They lollygag and BS just to give me $15 bucks. It's ridiculous. I'm currently on the phone as I type this to see what the crap is going on that they are asking for the invoice AGAIN. It's a $90 bill that I will get $12 max from. I guess Healthy Paws thinks I pay them with the money tree outside my house, and that I dont have to work that I can just sit at work with my line tied up on their loud hold music.

This insurance comes in handy if you are looking at bill over $600, but for your average checkups, vaccinations, and minor incidents, it's just a black hole you toss your hard earned money in. Within the 4 years, I think I've faced to price hikes. I would leave and go with another company, but on while on their plan one two cats have had a UTI and one has been diagnosed with bronchitis, so if I leave them for another company those will be uncovered 'pre-existing conditions'.

Screw this company. Use a different insurance company! I have 2 dogs and I use Embrace and Healthy Paws to insure my 2 dogs. I got my youngest dog insured through Healthy Paws LITERALLY as soon as I got her as a puppy, so there were no pre-existing conditions. I have been extremely fortunate in that this particular dog is very healthy and needs very little medical attention beyond routine care. So imagine my delight when I had to file my first claim ever when my dog was about 2.5 years old. She was presenting possible neurological issues and I took her in for a neurological exam. We were, again, very fortunate in that it was not neurological, but she was, unfortunately, still sick. I went ahead and filed the claim (the bill was somewhere around $600 I believe, with 90% reimbursement and a $100 deductible). Oh joy, here's what happened:

In less than 24 hours after filing the initial claim online, I received an email from Healthy Paws stating that they were not covering A SINGLE CENT of the claim. WHAT THE **?! I was furious, and clearly, still am. You'll see why. I called immediately and got on the phone with a lady who was a total jerk to me over the phone. Without even looking at the claim, she tells me that they don't cover "wellness" issues. I explain that it was NOT wellness. In whose mind is a neurological exam considered "wellness?" And to boot, we found out during that exam that it was not neurological, but that she was sick and had to be treated right then and there.

I explain to the customer service lady all of that and she was just like, "Hmm. Well, file an appeal." Let me get this straight---YOU SCREWED UP AND NOW YOU NEED ME TO DO MORE WORK TO FURTHER ILLUSTRATE THAT YOU SCREWED UP? Did I get that right? Yes, sadly that's what happened. I file an appeal (what BS), and then waited. Waited. Waited. Waited.

Weeks go by, I kid you not, and the status of the claim is perpetually being "processed," so I call again and this time the person I speak with was at least nice, and they tell me that I can escalate the claim to have it be processed faster. Like...what?! Again, are you ** kidding?! Why do I need to call YOU and ask YOUR COMPANY to do your job in a timely fashion? This is insane. So I ask them to escalate the claim. I waited. I waited. I waited.

I call again and they tell me the same thing: It's being processed as fast as it possibly can. This is where I really lose it with this BS scam company. I ask the person on the phone how it was possible for them to REVIEW and then DENY the claim in under 24 hours, but when I file an appeal, I'm waiting for literal months? GET THIS >>> The agent on the phone literally said to me, "When we get claims, WE DON'T ACTUALLY READ THE CHART NOTES OR EVEN REQUEST THE CHART. We just look at the line items on the bill and base it off that." Could you get any lazier?!

They don't even READ what the EXAM was for. They just GUESS AND WING IT. Yes, you read that correctly. They are trained to literally just skim through all of our claims and make nonsensical, whimsical decisions, nearly always leaning toward "Deny." I'm furious at this point--again, still am--and I ask yet again to have Healthy Paws escalate the claim because this is ** ridiculous. I've been waiting MONTHS for THEM to fix THEIR screw up. How is this company still legally allowed to operate?? So I wait some more. And I wait. And I wait.

A few more weeks go by and we literally went through all of fall and it's nearly the beginning of winter. I call again. The person I speak with this time is a bit more helpful in explaining things. She tells me that within Healthy Paws are multiple different departments, and the claims department doesn't speak with the appeals department (or something along those lines), and that one department somehow has the necessary paperwork, but it's likely buried under a stack of other appeals and that they'll get to it eventually. She then tells me that I can escalate the claim, and I explain to her that I have already done that.

She pauses a moment and then says, "Oh, wow, yes you're right. You've escalated it twice already... Hmm, that's odd... It shouldn't take this long, NOT IF YOU ESCALATED IT." <<< I put that in all caps because apparently it's fine for an appeal to take that long if you don't call and escalate it? Like...what?! This company is god-awful. The same lady then asks me, "Well, do we have your chart?" As in my dog's medical chart from the vet, and I confirm that my vet has sent them my dog's chart to them MULTIPLE TIMES. Then she asks me HOW it's being sent to Healthy Paws, and I tell her that the vet has been faxing it to the fax number listed on the blank claim forms from Healthy Paws, per Healthy Paws' instructions.

GET THIS, the lady tells me NOT TO FAX THE CHART (that's literally what it says to do), because the majority of the time, THEY DON'T GET THE FAXES and nor do they ever use a single ounce of initiative to reach out to the vet to ask for it in order to do their damn jobs. She tells me instead to have the vet EMAIL it, you know, the opposite of what the form instructs. So obvious.

I call my vet (for the 5th or 6th time at this point), and ask them to please email the chart instead. They email it to HPI immediately. The vet is pretty annoyed with Healthy Paws at this point too. They do NOT recommend HPI as pet insurance to anyone anymore. Not just because of my problem with HPI, but because ALL of their clients go through this same nightmare with this company, and the poor vet continually gets stuck in the middle, repeating the same exercises over and over again for every pet with a claim. What a nightmare.

After the chart gets emailed to HPI, I go back to ol' waiting game. Another week or two went by and FINALLY I get the results of the appeal. Guess what? They approved the appeal--but, out of the nearly $600 bill, with a 90% reimbursement, want to know what they sent back to me? A measly $100. I am so furious with this BS. Again, I can't remember the exact total for that bill, but it was close to around $600, and with a %90 reimbursement, well, that should be a LOT higher than $100.

I call AGAIN and speak to ANOTHER person, and this person explains to me that HPI DOESN'T COVER ANYTHING. LIKE ANYTHING AT ALL. It's either not covered by "their policies" or they just deny it outright. What fun. Great company. It's now spring and I just had to file my second claim for--get this--$18 for her meds because she was sick. THEY DENIED IT. An $18 claim, which is COVERED according to THEIR POLICY, but now they're trying some more BS stating that her meds are BEHAVIOURAL (WHAT THE ACTUAL **?!) and sadly, HPI (aka the devil) does not cover "behavioural issues."

I'm officially leaving them the negative reviews they deserve all over the internet and filing an official complain with the BBB. SCREW THIS SCAM COMPANY. They are an honest-to-god total scam and a huge waste of your money, time, and peace. They do NOT help your pet in any way. They take your money and do not reimburse you for things that are stated under the policy as items that do qualify for reimbursement. They do not help you financially with your vet bills, in any way. It's the exact opposite. They are rude, disrespectful, lazy, they cut corners, and they drag their feet on doing literally any task that is a part of their job. They do not follow their own stated policies. They do not care about doing anything correctly. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

I've never had to leave a review like this before. Healthy Paws is a complete scam and I've had to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau because their customer service literally refuses to respond to me (I'm not even joking, it's the most insane thing I've ever experienced). So, after paying over $1,000 dollars in premiums they have repeatedly refused to cover any of my pet's medical conditions. When I first rescued my dog, he had Giardia, poor thing. Once we cured that, he started having some other - shall we say - tummy troubles. Healthy Paws refused to cover any vet bills because of his "pre-existing condition" (aka, the Giardia). But surprise! This time around, he didn't have Giardia. He had an allergy, which we didn't know about because until then, he had been on a special medical diet. So, two unrelated conditions. But Healthy Paws didn't care.

So then, last month, I take my cat in for a routine check up. After the blood test, the vet orders an additional test to see if he has hyperthyroidism. He does, my poor old man. So here's the thing, a while back, we'd done the same test (my cat is old and so naturally he's showing signs of aging). But the test for hyperthyroidism came back NEGATIVE. Can you see where this is going? Yep! Healthy Paws calls it a pre-existing condition. So, not only will they not cover any future treatment for his condition, they won't even cover the initial routine visit, because as a result of a routine check up a "pre-existing condition" was found! But it gets better. I e-mail Healthy Paws customer service and after they confirm they won't pay for anything, I ask them to cancel my policy - because honestly, what's the point if they're just going to call everything a pre-existing condition. So...the just don't respond. Until I've been charged for another month.

I tried to contact them for 10 days. 10 days via all channels available to me. I even found the director of marketing on LinkedIn and tried to message her. Lol - I know, but desperate times... I finally just filed a report with the Better Business Bureau to try and get someone else to make them cancel my policy and give me a refund. So, here's the moral of the story, Healthy Paws is a scam and their customer service is a nightmare. Shelly ** - watch out for her. I googled Healthy Paws Shelly ** and hoo boy, seems I'm not the only one who has been pitted up against her. Hug your pets and keep them away from Healthy Paws.

Healthy Paws claims policy premiums do not increase annually based on age so I insured my puppy. At 8 weeks old her premium was $.47.19 per month. At age 4 years (on her birthday month) her premium increased from $66.63 to $91.65 Per month. Because Healthy Paws Assured me that the price increase was not based on age I decided to get a price quote for a eight week old puppy and guess what, the price was $33.26 per month.

I understand the concept of premiums based on age when a policy initiates. I do not understand why a new policy would have a lower premium than I currently pay unless the premium is in fact based on age. This practice of reduced insurance prices for puppies and kittens during their first years gives insurance providers an unfair advantage due to fact that changing insurance providers requires Initiating a new policy for your, now, adult pet. Because we are talking about Healthy Paws insurance I will tell you what Healthy Paws offers for my four-year-old dog. Updated on 07/18/2019: Hi everyone! Please look for me as Diana of Cheshire for the original post 04/04/2019 regarding my puppy getting parvo and Healthy Paws denied the claims despite the fact their website states "a new illness that first shows signs or symptoms after enrollment, including any applicable waiting periods" there he should be "eligible for coverage." There is a computer screenshot with the date 03/15/2019. I posted a screenshot with my original review to show that statement. I also retook the screenshot on my phone on 04/04/2019 to show you that the statement was still current.

Seeing how Healthy Paws is a very unethical company because of the false advertisement, I've decided to filed with BBB. They responded to BBB saying it's in the policy that they will not pay after 15 days despite the fact they stated they will in their FAQ on their website, and they disregarded my actual finding that they are providing false advertisement. I've decided to file Consumer Affairs. Consumer Affairs received the same response.

My next step was to the state Attorney General. I will file again to the Federal Trade Commission. Today, I received an email from the state Attorney General. Healthy Paws still denies by stating their policy and ignoring my actual findings. I'm not worried because I know the Attorney General and government officials are going to look into Healthy Paws once I finished writing a review to be sure my review is on top to warn consumers. I'm going to post on Yelp as well to warn others.

Today, I actually went back on the site to see what they did to their what is covered section in FAQ. Can you believe they actually changed "a new illness that first shows signs or symptoms after enrollment, including any applicable waiting periods" to "if your pet shows signs or symptoms of a new accident or illness after enrollment, and after any applicable waiting period, it will be eligible for coverage.". I will provide computer screenshot with a date on the bottom. They know what they did wrong. I'm going to sue Healthy Paws for false advertisement for sure for false advertisement and changing their site after I stated the actual findings. They messed with the wrong consumer.

Consumers if you have been ripped off by Healthy Paws before 04/04/19 (since I have two screenshots of proof that they stated they will cover including any applicable waiting period), please file a complaint to your Attorney General and post on social media. Attorney General/Government officials will take care of it. Use my screenshots and reviews as proof. Healthy Paws need to be sue for false advertisement and changing their what is covered section after my actual findings, and not taking responsibility to follow through what they advertised on the website. They will use their policy as an excuse to not accept claims despite the fact their FAQ stated they will. I don't know when they changed their FAQ what is covered section but it was after 04/04/19.

Original Review: Hi Everyone! If you are a new pet owner thinking about getting insurance, DO NOT GET HEALTHY PAWS. I will tell you why. If you're a consumer like me who reads the FAQ section, then you will realize how much of a false advertisement Healthy Paws really is during an emergency situation and their 15 waiting period contradictions.

I've decided to sign up on Feb 22 or 23 for my puppy. I understand there is a waiting period HOWEVER, under their WHAT IS COVERED? in the FAQ section if you read very carefully they stated: "Our plan covers the unexpected things that come up with pet health care, whether that is an accident or illness. So if your pet gets sick or injured, that is what Healthy Paws pet insurance is here for! Our plan has no caps on payouts: no per incident caps, no annual caps and no lifetime caps. If it's a new accident or illness that first show signs or symptoms after enrollment, including any applicable waiting periods, it's eligible for coverage. For any covered condition, our policy covers medically necessary veterinary treatments, including but not limited to: Diagnostic testing such as x-rays and blood tests, Hospitalization, including any treatments while in the hospital, surgeries, prescription medications."

My puppy ended up getting PARVOVIRUS on March 2. He was hospitalized for almost a week. I've filed the claim. Guess what? Healthy Paws decided to reject the claim because they considered a parvovirus to be a "pre-existing condition" and he was in the 15 day waiting period. Do you see how contradicting what they stated what will be covered? My pup had blood tests done, and was hospitalized. He did have "a new illness that first shows signs or symptoms after enrollment, INCLUDING ANY APPLICABLE WAITING PERIODS" there he should be "eligible for coverage." I don't know how many consumers got ripped off by Healthy Paws' false advertisement. I just want to warn consumers who actually read their policy and FAQ to not sign up if you think they will cover emergency situations like parvo.

I have filed with BBB. After I'm done filing for Consumer Affairs, I will file a complaint to State Consumer Protection Agency, Federal Trade Commission, and State Attorney General because they are advertising false products. This company seemed like a good company at first. This is why I chose them but then I realized how bad of a decision it was with the rate increases. They start off small like the first year I had no claims so it went from like 50 something for 67 then the following year they charged me more because I moved. Mind you I moved within the same county and only 5 miles away. I didn't move to a different county or a different state. I moved 5 miles and nothing changed about his treatment with his vet and they raised me to 80 something. Now mind it that year my dog needed some treatment so I knew that is why they raised me but they said it's because the higher cost of animal treatment in my new area which is obvious bs.

Now this year my dog got sick and needed medical treatment and I finally really started using his insurance after 2 years of barely using it at all and now it's coming on his 3 year anniversary and now they raised me to 120. They say they don't raise you based on claims but based on the higher amount of animals that need more and more care and that they need to raise everyone's rates so they can keep up the level of care but I don't know any of my friends that got raised this high and if and when you complain to them they will tell you feel free to shop around knowing damn well that your dog now has pre-existing conditions now so no insurance will take your dog with pre-existing conditions.

So in the span of less than 3 years they went from charging around 50 to 120 and what are you supposed to do? You are stuck and they know it. So please shop around and make sure you really read all the fine print before even getting a animal so that way you can have insurance from birth and hopefully you will not get screwed over like I did.

Terrible, would give it negative stars if at all possible. Firstly they don’t tell you about the 15 day waiting period and that if anything arises in that period it will not be covered. We went in that time not knowing about the 15 day waiting period for a cherry eye, of course that claim was denied. Subsequently my poor dog had to have surgery 2 months later for that since it didn’t get better, which they also denied stating that it was present in that waiting period!! What the hell! So if any health issue at all arises during that time it will basically never ever get covered! And getting these people on the phone takes forever! No one answered the phone for a whole 30 min! And then to top it all, none of these facts are stated on their website, they keep telling me it’s on the policy, but not on the website?! How’s that even legally possible? Horrible company would avoid at all costs!

I can't say enough about Healthy Paws and how it has been a life saver for me and saved me so much money and stress in the end. I have read other reviews about how they have increased their rates every year and I have experienced the same except it was more like every 2-3 years. I have 2 dogs and at times when money was tight, I thought about canceling my policy since I kept my dogs healthy and take them in for their routine check-ups. Here I am 8 years later, and I am so glad I did not cancel.

In December, my 8-year-old German Shepherd started limping. I took him to my vet and they did an x-ray and discovered severe erosion of his femoral head which was suspect of either a bone infection or bone cancer. I had to take him in for an MRI and biopsy which cost over $5,000. After the first result came back with mixed opinions, I had to consult with a Veterinary Oncologist and got the same mixed opinions. In the meantime, while I was waiting for the results, my 9-year-old female German Shepherd suddenly collapsed in January. I had to rush her to the Emergency Vet (close to $3,000) to find out she had end-stage Hemangiosarcoma. I chose not to put her down right away and chose to use alternative treatments for her to make her final weeks more comfortable which they covered the majority of those expenses.

Sadly she is no longer with us but Healthy Paws was so great to notice on her final bills that we had to put her down. I didn't have to call to cancel as that was the last thing on my mind. They went ahead and canceled her policy and credit a portion that was already paid. They even sent me a condolence card hand signed by those at Healthy Paws which brought tears to my eyes. I can go on and on but I will end this note by saying that if I did not have Healthy Paws I would probably have to put both my dogs down early on as I would not be able to afford the $20,000 in veterinary expenses I have incurred in the past 3 months. Plus they have been easy to work with whenever I called and have been so caring and compassionate when it came to the loss of my dog. Rest in peace, my dear Zoe.

After our first and only attempt to file a claim we could not get through to anyone on the phone. We had noticed a discrepancy in our vet’s notes where her tech had understandably written down the wrong date of the discovery of a lump. We wanted a chance to explain this issue & suggest they call the vet to clarify. After no answer and no way to leave a message, we mailed a letter explaining why the vet's date was wrong and the emergency vet's date was correct. They completely ignored the letter/never asked us more about it. Multiple requests via email to have someone call us also ignored. Beyond that, I was inundated with requests for more information when everything we had had already been sent twice. They would say they received the records and two days later I would get another email stating they do not have the records needed to process the claim.

How is this possible? We had gone to great lengths to send everything as requested with their claim forms, all previous medical history, etc - all neatly bundled together. The entire experience was a stressful nightmare. When you are paying a premium and submit a claim, you expect more than incoherent requests and you expect to be treated like a valued customer. We were not. Ultimately, the only coherent communication we received was a claim denial. I cancelled the policy immediately and have decided to set money aside in a special account each month to cover any large unforeseen animal mishaps.

Since that was rectified Healthy Paws has been quick at approving claims and just as prompt at paying the claim and directly depositing it into my account. I have been a customer of Healthy Paws for over 5 years now. I've had two of my pets covered with Healthy Paws within that time. I've never experienced huge increases in premiums with my first pet's insurance. She was covered for nearly 4 years, but that pet has since passed. Currently, I only have one pet covered since Jan 2016 with a premium of $39.72/month. After one year it increased slightly to $43.70/month, which is reasonable. However, the next year it jumped to $54.18/month, and they just raised it again to $67.81/month this year. These are substantial increases, which they justify as increased cost of vet care. They really put pet owners in a bind and forcing them to choose between what they can afford and their pet's life.

Starting over with a new pet insurance company will make our pet ineligible for certain coverage based on new health conditions that have been found since then. Healthy Paws says that rates are not affected by the number or nature of the claims that we submit, but I do not believe them. Unfortunately, we have had to submit many claims for our accident-prone dog, so it's a suspicious coincidence that the premiums keep jumping up. I am not a happy customer of Healthy Paws and hate how they are taking advantage of the situation that many other pet owners will face.

According to their website: "Due to the increasing cost of new technology and advances in veterinary and specialty care, your rates will increase slightly to align with the claim payouts of each state. These manageable annual increases provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical and diagnostic options available today." I DO NOT consider a yearly increase of 24.28% to be slight or manageable.

Unless your dog is at the end stages of life or at the beginning and has thousands of dollars worth of vet bills, this insurance is truly terrible! We have 3 dogs and each has his own deductible; we have paid monthly for years, and never meet those deductibles, so, we're paying for this insurance in case of emergency, but, never seeing any payment in return. I know this is because the monthly costs are low compared to pet insurance that costs $100+/month for 1 dog. I would not recommend this insurance to anyone who has a dog/dogs who are in good health or well-behaved.

I purchased the policy way before this ever became an issue however, due to the veterinarian putting down that his testicles had not descended (which is perfectly normal at 2 months old), Healthy Paws used that as an excuse to not pay for his surgery. They called it a "pre-existing condition"! When I attempted to fight this, Healthy Paws representatives made it come off as if I was being ridiculous and was only after the $. This type of surgery typically costs $1,000 + dollars and keep in mind under Healthy Paws' "policy", Cryptorchidism is categorized as a hereditary issue - which should be covered according to their ads.

This company will look for any reason not to pay out what they advertise! Everything under the sun could potentially be considered a "pre-existing condition". If your cat has the sniffles one day and ends up with lung cancer - that's not paid for because of the "pre-existing condition" OR if your kitten has ear mites and later down the road develops a tumor - somehow, Healthy Paws will also categorize that as a "pre-existing condition". The other dogs run to the kitchen for food, but not her she just patiently sits by the door waiting to go with me. I have no idea why. And for years I never needed it, I would think from time to time about canceling it but, I knew if a real emergency came up I would need it. I thought if I was ever in an emergency room with my dog I wouldn’t want to have to euthanize because I didn’t have the money. Then I worried about them finding an excuse after all of these years of paying to not pay or help with a claim when it came down to it.

When I called them about my dog having cancer, I really thought negative... That there’s is no way this company is really going to come through. If they weren’t going to help I for sure can not afford this, but I can’t let my best friend down she deserves a chance. Healthy Paws shocked me and helped give me hope for my precious Gracie. They have paid all of her bills minus the deductible. Thank the good Lord I kept this policy and that they are actually an incredible company. I’m still wondering if it’s too good to be true...

When we called to inquire as to why such a high rate increase we were advised that our specific area (zip code) had a major jump in pet care costs, thus, the need to increase our premiums. The agent also denied that we would have been given a 3% increase quote. (Basically called us liars). Since the calls are recorded we recommended they pull the audio file). We had zero claims for the year and had purchased a $250 annual deductible with 80% coverage and no annual caps. I am so angry right now. I changed my billing method last month and was assured it was all changed over and cancelled at the other end. Voila, double charged and I also received a $40 insufficient fund charge as I was in the process of closing the original account I used, which I had explained to the agent. I called and the girl I spoke to WOULD NOT agree that I was double charged, kept saying she didn't see it anywhere, yet she continued to quote my two separate bank account numbers. Finally she said she would pass it on to "Ops", I asked when and she said immediately and this is day four. The agent was very snippy and rude. I will probably cancel my insurance if this is not sorted out immediately. Bad customer service on two counts!

My dog got sick with vomiting and the runs and week after Bravecto. Then I looked at the web page. 7.1% of dogs get these symptoms. Prolonged these symptoms can lead to death from kidney failure. I then took my dog to the emergency pet hospital for fluids to protect her kidneys. So far a bill of about $650 was submitted to Healthy Paws Pet insurance but they are only giving me $50 credit toward the $250 deductible. They pay for almost nothing in an emergency which is why I pay them every month. Do not get this insurance - put some money aside every month instead.

I chose Healthy Paws because I thought it was the very best. It is not. I purchased to best coverage. I purchased policies for 4 dogs in 2014. Since then my rates have increased 62%. This year's increase alone is 25%. This insurance is terrible. They know they get you because now 4 years later my dogs would be at a higher rate if I chose a new insurance company. And any minor issues they've had in the last 4 years such as ear infections would now be considered pre-existing if I switched to a new company. Don't make the mistake I made. Do NOT choose Healthy Paws for your pet insurance. Very dissatisfied customer.

I understand increases are necessary each year. But telling me you have to increase my costs by 25% this year alone because the "insurance commissioner" won't let you charge me less is insulting. DON'T get this coverage. Healthy Paws will increase your premiums ridiculously. It is a bait and switch operation clearly. Reasonable rates when you start but not for long. And it's not due to the age of my pet. Two of the dogs I have covered are only 4 years old. Be warned. You will be ripped off by Healthy Paws.

This company took forever to process my pet's claim even after they had all necessary records. It took 4 phone calls over a 2 week period to find out why the claim was just sitting without being processed. After all of this nothing was covered. I read the fine print and they seem to make up exclusions along the way to avoid having to pay anything. Complete lack of communication, and once you get someone on the phone they don't seem to have a clue as to what's going on. Stay away from them... Run fast!!

I cancelled this policy over a month ago using their app. I was billed again. I again contacted them by email and again they billed my account. If they are this incompetent in dealing with a simple administrative procedure just how good will they be when your pet's life is on the line. I have never seen such a disregard for customer care nor this level of administrative incompetence in my life.

I paid into this policy for 2 years without submitting any major claims. When I finally submit a claim for my dog's recent knee surgery, which cost $3000.00, they refuse to pay! They claim it is a preexisting condition, even though it did not arise until after I purchased the policy. The bottom line is that this company will look for any reason to avoid paying out on a policy, even after gladly taking a customer's money for years. Do not buy with them, they are a complete scam!

This company is quick to take your dollar, but slow to reimburse. They love to flag claims, after a four year member, to review in order to delay payment. I regret ever choosing Healthy Paws!! Once your pet has a condition, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to go to another provider, due to that condition being ruled pre-existing!

I have been going to a very well known Pet Grooming place for almost 4 years now. I recently needed to have my dog's hair trimmed within a matter of hours for a family gathering and my usual spot could not accommodate me. I found Healthy Paws and I am more than amazed with the level of professionalism and also the level of dedication they had to make my dog feel like one of their own. #newdogspot!
