We have been feeding our fur babies Freshpet for many years. It appears to be an easy digestible food that keeps them in good shape. And they like it. However starting last Monday little Lola started vomiting and by evening had the diarrhea. Since it was the weekend by then we decided to ride it out to see if she would get better. She seems so much better on Sunday so took her off the chicken and rice we were feeding her and gave her Freshpet For dinner. In the middle of the night she started vomiting and diarrhea again very bloody.
I brought her to the emergency room for treatment. She needed to stay two days with intravenous fluids because she was dehydrated by then. He gave me medication and special food to feed her. She is on the mend. However our other dog Pasha started with the same symptoms last night. He is at the vet now. I’m bringing this up because the pet food is the only thing they have in common. We have thrown it away and will feed them what the vet recommends. I would be concerned to ever feed them that food again!

My dogs love Freshpet dog food. I buy 6 lb rolls and the key to keeping it fresh takes a little effort. I cut the large roll in half. Put plastic wrap on open ends. Put each half in zipper bag and then in a airtight container. The food remains fresh as the day you open it. One of my dogs was a picky eater and now eats all her food.

My little 8lb Chi has been on either the rolled tube food or chicken bagged food for six years now with no problems. April 20th 2019 purchased the bagged food due to my grocery store being out of the tubes. Long story short, my dog got sick, throwing up, loose stools with blood, wouldn't eat and the food by the way had sour smell. She ran a temp of 104.4. Put her on a bland diet and finally three weeks later she seemed normal. As of 90 days later she is in the hospital with the same symptoms. Looks as of now and $2500 and growing, it is gallbladder/liver related.
Also two weeks after the first episode read online Freshpet was having a mold problem. Also vet told us about not feeding no grain diets right now. Been reading about peas, legumes, potatoes or maybe lack of taurine where animals are getting sick and some have died. Freshpet has peas in their food. Google this info and get the list of most of the brands that causing DCM. Dilated Cardiomyopathy.
Hi Brenda, We appreciate you reaching out to us. So sorry to hear your pup is not feeling well. We will reach out to directly so we can obtain some more details.
Please note, The FDA is investigating a potential link between foods that contain peas, lentils, potatoes or other legumes as the main ingredients and canine dilated cardiomyopathy.
On July 12, 2018 the FDA announced its investigation into a potential link between dog foods that contain potatoes, peas, lentils, or other legumes and canine DCM after an increase in reported cases over the last few months. Again, the data we have seen from the FDA relates only to dry pet foods that include legumes and/or potato as a larger proportion of their ingredients and there were no Freshpet foods involved in these cases. This may be because of the differences in the ingredients and cooking process of Freshpet diets compared to dry dog foods. Freshpet includes a high percentage of fresh meats in all of our formulas, whereas dry dog foods will often rely more heavily on plant-based ingredients. The high level of fresh meat in all Freshpet recipes means that our diets provide high levels of not only taurine itself, but the amino acids precursors to taurine and carnitine, additional nutrients that are essential for keeping hearts healthy. Peas, spinach and potato are included in our recipes in lower amounts compared to the fresh meat sources and are used as sources of dietary fiber as well as other essential nutrients such as iron, vitamin A and vitamin K.

My Corgi/Jack Russell was overweight and had some medical issues. He's 11 years old and had lumps on his stomach (non-cancerous). He stopped being excited about his regular dog food and it was even hard to get him to eat it. After we switched him to Freshpet dog food he is so excited to eat! He has slimmed down to be a very lean dog that loves to run again! The lumps on his stomach have gone down almost entirely and his fur is A LOT softer. I would recommend this product to everyone with a dog - I feel good giving this to him and it's definitely worth the money.

When my cat JJ was sent home by the vet, basically to die, I was shattered. My kitchen quickly became a laboratory of experiments of different types of food to try to get him to eat - everything from tuna to sardines to roast chicken. JJ turned his nose up at it all. Then, I happened into a grocery store I'd never been to on a trip out of town. I spotted your pate for cats and figured it was worth a shot. Words almost fail me. The vigor of my cat returned in short order and my cat that was wasting away now wakes me up in the middle of the night to eat. I don't know what magic you use, quality ingredients and care and hope maybe... but the cat who was sent home to die with a tumour is thriving and I am thankful for each day you have given me.

I have had all my dogs and cats on Vital for years with no allergies or weight issues whatsoever unlike all other dog foods I have tried before. I like the protein vs fat balance. I wrote to the company to ask about their ingredients. They shared that all come from the USA except the lamb which comes from New Zealand and the vitamins which come from Canada. Most companies would never disclose this. Freshpet did s right away. I love the variety of food as well as variety of textures. Just a note, my pets drink more water using Vital which is a good thing to keep hydration up. I highly recommend Freshpet Vital. Can be purchased at Petco, PetSmart and most speciality stores. Updated on 01/08/2026: My boy Kozy is 17 years old and is going strong. People, even our vet say "I can't believe he is that old. He doesn't look it. He doesn't act like it." I strongly feel that Freshpet has played a very strong role in his good health, and I always recommend it to my friends with dogs.
Original review: My dog, Kozy, is ten years old. He is a toy chihuahua. He has never been much of an eater, and, in fact roughly once every 10 days, he wouldn't eat at all. After first checking out the price to see if I could afford it as I am on a fixed income, I decided to start giving Kozy a slice of the Freshpet roll along with a couple of large handfuls of the little chicken bits. I began this "experiment" about three weeks ago. I was really surprised that for the first time ever, Kozy actually began running to his dinner dish! He eats EVERYTHING in the bowl (a rare occurrence), EVERYDAY. Needless to say, I have been astonished at these new behaviors. My boy is happy, and so is his dad!???

My dog had been on FreshPet for two years. Over Two weeks ago I purchased the Beef, Liver, Lamb and Egg Grain Free 15 pound bag. I always freeze half immediately as my small dog can’t eat a bag in seven days. Upon opening it, the food smelled “off, sour”. The color looked odd compared to normal. My dog ate it for breakfast then later for dinner. That night he threw it up completely undigested. The next morning, I gave it to him. He sniffed it and didn’t eat. He loves this food, obviously he was ill. He then vomited again and had diarrhea. The vet x-rayed his stomach, did blood work and checked his stools. His conclusion, my dog ate something that caused food poisoning.
I am with my dog 24/7. He doesn’t get table scraps, all he had eaten was FreshPet. He has been on two antibiotics and is still not right. I wrote to FreshPet after photographing the bag’s UBC code and label. They offered me coupons, that’s it. No explanation. I offered to send them the bag (and frozen fresh contents). They did not respond. Of course I don’t want coupons, no way am I giving my dog this food again. I don’t think any food dependent on stock clerks and self closing refrigerator doors to keep it cold is 100% safe. Either way, their response was callous and seemingly unconcerned. It seems to me that they should have examined the bag. We are entering a new week where I am still cooking Chicken and rice for a pretty sick pup.

Then he got wise and didn’t want that either. So I bought a small roll of the beef and he gobbled it down. Then I bought the large roll, but after the 2nd day opening, it had a strange smell and thought it must be me. He started having diarrhea and then started vomiting. We looked at the reviews online and saw others experiencing the same symptoms. This dog food should be taken off the market as far as I’m concerned. The last three bags I bought have mold within days even though they have a date for like 2 months. I have a bag in my house now that mold it within 3 days. When is this going to stop. When are they going to start thinking about the health of the dog opposed to just making money. I also took my Chin to the doctor last year and they said that she had a bacterial infection. When they checked her feces. I am so done with this dog food. It's very expensive to have crappy quality. We are concerned to hear your dog is always throwing up and would like you and your vet to speak to our veterinary team. We take quality very seriously at Freshpet. It’s slimy and smells old, so annoyed. I’ve got to change to another food now, from what is probably poor refrigeration or transport temp! Can’t risk her being so ill on it... I bought Fresh Pet "Tender Chicken Recipe" for our cat. She loved it; however, she threw it up the next morning and then threw up twice more and remained lethargic to the point that I brought her to the vet late in the day. Diagnosis "Scarf and Barf." BUT, when I reintroduced a small amount two days later, and warmed it, the food caused the microwave to immediately "arc and spark," in a manner consistent with the presence of metal. I repeated with a different Fresh Pet sample, then something else. Only the Fresh Pet caused the microwave to arc and spark. Whatever was in the offending pellet emitted smoke immediately as well. The bag was purchased at McQuade's Grocery in Mystic, CT with a sell by date of 9/17/19. The bar code label reads 2797501005. This bag is getting tossed but I will consider trying another in the future.
Hi Susan, Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear your cat was not feeling well. If this was the first time using Freshpet Cat food, whenever a change in diet is made, it must be done gradually. This helps avoid the digestive upsets and food refusals, which can occur if a diet is changed too quickly. As with any new food, when feeding for the first time you should gradually introduce the food a little at time, mixed with your pet's current food. Over time, gradually increase the amount of Freshpet Select. Our recipes contain vitamins and minerals which makes our food complete and balanced. The arcing you saw in your microwave is caused by a combination of our vegetables and mineral mix in our foods. All of our foods undergo metal detection after packing, so we can assure you there is no metal in any of our foods. We will reach out to you via private message so we can obtain additional information.

My dog had been eating this food for a good long while and I noticed she would throw up often but never suspected the food till I started noticing it smelling rancid after 1 day and dates were good. I passed it off as just being closed up till I was dog sitting a family member's dog who is small (8lbs) and gave her some of the new roll I just opened and both my dog and that one got very ill. And the small one so bad that she had to be rushed to the vet for severe gastric distress-diarrhea and vomiting and is still very very ill weeks later over this. She was fine till I fed her this food and it sparked my curiosity as to if it was causing my own dog's sickness and started looking online and seen a bazillion complaints for the same problems - some animals dying - and I wanna know why this food hasn't been recalled!! Pets are dying!!
This food has an odor to it even when opening a new tube. I normally purchase from Walmart and it always appeared to be refrigerated well. This issue is with the food. I hate to think I was resp for this because I fed the food trusting Freshpet was safe but it's not!!! I hope the small dog doesn't die as a result of the awful symptoms she is battling. She has had to have IV fluids and is on several meds to save her. This is terrible and explains why my dog is always vomiting and some days refused to even eat it when put out. Something is terribly wrong with this food and it needs to be recalled and people notified before their pet dies. You people should be ashamed.
I see complaints as far back as 2015 and you KNOW it's happening!! If you love your furbaby stay farrrrr away from this food!!! It's rotten before you even buy it and very misleading till you place it in a container and put in fridge for a few hrs then go back and open it and it smells rotten!!!! If you are one of the lucky ones who haven't had a sick dog or cat yet, you would be smart to get them off of this food NOW because it's just a matter of time before you will be rushing to the vet with a 500$ bill to try to save their lives. Shameful that this company is covering this up. Just do a search online and you will see what they don't want you to! I doubt my post will be allowed but if I can save anyone else the heartache I'm going through right now trying to save my relative's dog as well as my own dog being on antibiotics for being sick, it's worth it. DON'T USE THIS FOOD.

Our pugs are 7 years old and have always been on dry kibble, sometimes with added pet-friendly pumpkin added. In February 2019, our female pug became severely ill. She vomited all day, couldn't keep water down, and was shaking. We had noticed over the previous months she had increased in size too. We took her to the vet and had to get her anti nausea medication and subcutaneous fluid treatment. We still didn't know what was wrong. I was starting to worry that she had bloat. For the next few days, she wouldn't eat or drink and would shake at times. Then we saw the FreshPet commercial with the pug in it. We decided then to give it a try. Our girl pug loved it and started eating again and regained her strength. Our boy pug loved it too. They've been on it since February 2019 and since then both pugs look slimmer and less bloated than they were when they were eating dry high quality kibble. They're more active now.
The pugs look like they've lost weight even though they haven't exercised more than usual and look very healthy now. They drink less water now too as before they would drink a lot which made me worry about their health - we think the dry kibble was making the pugs bloated and dehydrated. They love FreshPet so much. Although the cost of the food is more than what we were spending before on dry kibble, it's totally worth it and possibly saves us hundreds if not thousands in potential vet bills. It's worth the prevention. Thank you FreshPet for saving our pugs!

I also noticed that the Fresh Pet Company is loading up their food with carrots. So I decided to start removing almost any sign of the carrots in the Fresh Pet Select, Fresh from the Kitchen bags. I notice my animals stopped getting sick and trying to eat grass all the time. I just bought another bag of it yesterday and it was so loaded with carrots pieces I actually had three handfuls of carrots pieces in it.
It is very obvious to me they are trying to save money by loading up their so called food with carrots. It's disgusting. I will now not only NOT buy your products (which is not worth the money that is being charged for it) I'm going to tell everyone that has asked me about the food that it has now become a horrible food for the animals and don't waste their money. Vet performed so many tests since he was 4 months old, different medications, different expensive foods, many vet bills etc. I cooked chicken and rice for him and it seemed the best option, but he was not getting needed vitamins. Vet finally said try Freshpet, Well, it was a miracle. Looked the food, digestive problems were in check with help of a 1/2 ** hr before meals, Problem I found was he lost quite a bit of weight, and only Walmart and one local supermarket sold your food (Bi-LO). My recent visit to the store had zero rolls (smaller ones) and just a couple of the larger rolls. My concern was a possible recall, since none of the rolls were available, I have never found the refridge, so empty. Have you had a recall? But I must say again this food has been a lifesaver for my little rescue dog. Thank you for FRESH PET.

As the cups are small, the font for the list of ingredients is small as well. SO, I did not see that they have listed "natural flavors". I called and the customer service operator had no idea what are the "Natural flavors". She said "things to make it taste good" well, like what? "Oh, vinegar and some other things; I pointed out that vinegar is listed already as a separate ingredient. So, probably not, SALT is an ingredient! SALT! Calcium carbonate - lots of things with calcium in them. This is not good for cats.
She told me that it is all approved by whatever board it is that oversees pet food. Well, of course it is or it would not be on the shelf (or in this case, the fridge) - still, the FACT is that my cats are drinking almost two entire bowls of water every day. Three cats - two large bowls. This is not right. She said they have three vet specialists working on these formulas or for them of something but in any event she promised to have them call me as "they" were all on phone calls or just "busy". My little girl, RubyRoo, is super fussy and the only food she has previously eaten straight away is home made meals. I have tried every brand of dog food available in supermarkets and online but she has never went straight to her bowl or been excited when I was serving them up. So, 3 days ago, I was shopping and decided to look in the Freshpet chiller. I'd previously presumed it was going to be too expensive so didn't bother (big mistake!).
I was pleasantly surprised to see how good value the range is! And the chiller was mostly empty which is a good endorsement too. So I took a chance and picked up a 2.7kg roll of grain free chicken. I got home and immediately prepped a perfectly measured portion for my girl (thanks to the handy portion measures on the packaging).
Ruby jumped up as soon as she smelled it, then ate the entire amount in one go. That's never happened before with any other dog food. I've paid 5X the amount that Freshpet costs and Ruby just hasn't been too fussed about those more expensive brands. Ruby has a sensitive tummy and skin too. Even though I didn't introduce Freshpet gradually, her tummy has settled and improved immediately. Her poops are solid again and she is much happier and energetic in general. After she has finished her food, she comes and jumps in my knee and gives me big kisses and cuddles (her way of saying thank you, awww).
So, do I recommend Freshpet? You betcha. But more importantly, Ruby does! She's always had a lovely whiney coat but she's looking even lovelier, and happier too. All dog parents know when they're pupper is smiling, and my girl smiles a lot when she's just been fed now :). Meal times no longer a chore, me trying to make her food more appealing either. I just serve and she eats it up. If you are in any doubt about trying Freshpet, just go for it, it's great value so give it a shot. We knew she needed more nutritious meals but everything we bought either did not agree with her super sensitive digestive track or her picky taste buds. Instead of being able to slice their servings it just crumbled. Not sure what’s going on here. I hope they correct this issue. It’s a very good product but this texture just won’t work.

I have a soft spot for cats with health issues and have adopted several. I have an asthmatic, an epileptic and one with severe IBD. When I started buying the Freshpet I noticed that it smelled after only a couple of days. Super sad because it was actually the one food that worked for all my medical issues. I decided to empty the next bag out into a plastic container and problem solved. We've moved on to the rolls and the cups now but my suggestion to anyone that prefers the kibble in the bag is to try using your own airtight container. It made a big difference.

FreshPet makes a health difference. We have a 9 yr old Morkie. His name is Bailey. The past year we had a terrible time finding a dog food Bailey would eat. He had lost his energy and would not eat. He has been on Freshpet dog food for six months. He now acts like a young puppy full of energy. He now would eat three times a day if we put food down. And to beat it all he licks the bowl clean to make sure nothing is left. What a blessing FreshPet has been.

We loved this brand at first. Smelled like roast chicken and or beef. My dog and my cat gobbled it down each time. Then they came out with a different bag of Chicken for cats. Not sure if the mix is different. But the front of the bag says Chicken and fish and eggs. The older bag just said Chicken and Vegetables on the front. At first my cat would not eat the chicken/fish/egg mix at all. Finally she got hungry enough she ate it and promptly threw up. So I figured something in the mix was not agreeing with her so went back to the Chicken/veggies (which is really hard to find now) and she was happy...for a while. The last 4 bags I have gotten of dog food (chicken) and cat food (chicken/veggies) neither my cat nor dog would eat it. Both smell vinegary or sour. 4 bags!!! All had a expire date 2 months ahead of when I opened it. No mold present (although I have found some in earlier bags).
What are you guys doing that is causing this? I notice there is vinegar in the mix. Did you accidentally dump too much in? I mean it actually gags me when I smelled it. All 4 bags bought at different stores. We love your food but I will not feed my animals anything that smells off. Plus they won't eat it either. You've gone from perfect to intolerable. If you can't fix this I will have to find another company.

I’ve been feeding the chicken Freshpet to my dog for a year or so. As he loves beef, I decided to try the beef recipe. I bought a small bag with an expiration date far in the future, and put it in the fridge. When I got it out the next morning to feed to my dog, the package was so bloated with air that it looked like it would burst. I opened it, and it smelled sour. Threw it out immediately. A few weeks later, I decided to give it another try. Same thing happened again and I had to throw it out. Haven’t had this trouble with the chicken, so doubt it is the packaging. Regardless, I won’t ever purchase the beef flavor again.

Flatulence in dogs may be associated with both dietary and non-dietary causes. Dogs that are exercising or playing more than usual may suddenly be "gulping" more air, contributing to gas. My rescue has been eating a variety of Freshpet foods for a year, since dental surgery to remove most teeth. He LOVES the food. The only complaint I have is the grocery store I most often shop in for Freshpet food repeatedly sells food that had been soured or is turning green. Ever smelled soured bologna slick with green mold? This is the smell. One time I let my dog have it anyway, thinking I was wrong, and he got sick with diarrhea. I have had to throw away 5-6 bags and one tube of food in the last year.
I think they are shipping the food unrefrigerated and/or storing it unrefrigerated. The sell by dates on the packages are always months away from my purchase date, and the food I get from Petco and Target are always fresh. It's this one grocery store that repeatedly sells bad food. They also are often out of certain FreshPet foods for weeks. Four stars because I reached out to FreshPet last summer about the spoiled food at this one store and got no response.

That smell only lasted 1 day. No my store doesn't have a defective fridge, yes I checked the exp. before even leaving the store (common sense). The food had a very sour, putrid smell by the 2nd day. I even tried freezing half of it and it still smelled. My dog had regurgitated his food that day but I thought it was due to something else. I finally realized that the food could have made him sick. I called the company. They were nice and said we will look into it but I am concerned if this food has bacteria what is it doing to my dog? I thought maybe there was a problem with the distributor in my area, maybe one batch had a problem and they deliver to all those stores but to see how many people have had the same problem and their dogs getting sick (complaints since 2018) what is going on? In January 2019 I bought a bag of the soft chicken based food (not the loaf) and it seemed fine. My dog Bella loved it. However, after only two days I opened the bag to feed her and noticed a strong sour smell. Also, the food had a greyish color. The expiration date wasn't until May of 2019, and I know I sealed the bag properly. Our refrigerator is in top condition. I wasn't happy, but I hadn't saved my receipt so I didn't return it to the store. Thinking it was a fluke, I went to a different store and purchased a bag of the beef based kind. It seemed fine and she ate it, but during the night she became ill, throwing up and miserable. The next morning on instinct, I opened the bag and again was greeted with a foul sour odor and the food had turned a greyish tint. And again the expiration date wasn't until months later. I inspected the bag and there were no tears or damage. I tossed it and took her to the vet where he diagnosed food poisoning.
Happily, she recovered. I just called customer service and they thought it was probably that the coolers from BOTH stores were faulty and they're gonna check it out. Really? I've been reading all these reviews where the SAME THING is happening. Faulty coolers/tears in bags, etc. And also the response that "you should gradually introduce a new food." This wouldn't explain the sour smell/grey color though. They said I should've saved the bags so that I could have provided more detailed information about the product so they could look into it. The representative kindly offered to send me free coupons...no thanks. And risk my dog's health? Along with wasted money? I say there needs to be a serious investigation done by an outside party. This is happening too often. Beware, folks! Do NOT buy this product.

I have a nine year old Bloodhound that has allergies and have been for some time feeding her The Vital Freshpet Beef & Bison 5 LB. Grain Free rolls. The other rolls do not specify "Grain Free" and contain a lot of water. Recently Freshpet changed the labeling along with the recipe. Before they changed the product I would cut into the roll and it would be very meaty unlike the other rolls which contained way too much water (another reason I did not purchase). Now, when I cut into the new rolls water squirts all over the place which never happened before and the consistency is not the same. They now fill the package with so much water it is definitely not the same product.
I did call and email Feshpet and got the typical corporate response and it is not the fault of where I purchased. I tried two definitely sellers. Corporate states they have not changed the recipe which I highly disagree. In my opinion the only reason for the packaging change was to change the recipe. I cannot complain about the food itself. My dog loves it. When I started buying Freshpet for him he loved it and still does. However, as someone who lives on SS (poverty level) I had ask for help from them for coupons and explained my situation to them in a DM on Twitter. They were very gracious to send me a coupon for $6.99 and 2 for $2.00. This was very helpful as I am buying 4 - 6# rolls per month for my dog. Things have been difficult for us and I again requested help with coupons and got one for $1.00. It was not only insulting to me as a great customer but will not help me to continue feeding my dog their product. I have decided it would be better for us financially to start cooking his meals and not purchase again.
I'm truly very sad about our plight in not being able to continue being a great customer, but they need to rethink offering a little help for those of us that find ourselves in a position of financial weakness. I am elderly and unable to work, and I have never desired to be a charity case. But for goodness sake, if someone is humble enough to be honest about their situation, check it out, help them out. Enough said!

Going to try to take back to store but not sure I want the meatloaf style either. They did turn their noses up past two days but eating kibbles that is dry. I have a 13 yr old Pomchi. First I started out with the chicken rolls about a year ago. My dog loved the food. No complaints, but recently after a few bad batches that smelled funny and had a grey color she wouldn't eat it anymore so I threw them away, so I figured I would try again when I saw a new kind in the cooler. Switched to Freshpet small dog food in the bag. She loved the taste but by the 3rd day she has been very ill with horrible diarrhea. I don't know what's changed with the formula and what's in it that made her so sick but from now on I will be cooking her food for her, no more store bought dog food. Too many recalls... The food was purchased at Tops Market in Fredonia NY.

I started purchasing this food for my dog who was having some skin reactions to regular dry kibble. When we started using FreshPet last year, everything was great. His skin started clearing up and he was devouring his food. So we continued feeding him meals. Over the past few couple months we've noticed the bag smelling sour the next day after opening. We get one good feeding out of the bag before we have to throw it away. Thankfully we only buy the small bag since hes a small dog, but it's becoming a waste. I love the food for my dog but wondering why it's going bad so quickly. I've tried the grain free, the Roasted meals, chicken, beef, buying from different stores, etc. And each time, it's still going sour. We securely close the bag each time and are wondering what we can do to keep it fresh. I really don't want to change food since my dog loves it so much.

My Weenie dog is 10 months old and very thin. I have been giving her a very expensive dry food mixed with a little moist food and she just doesn't eat much at all. I decided to try the food in the roll for puppies and she loved it. I give her a thick slice twice a day cut up in little chunks. I feed her one chunk at a time to make sure she chews it and not just suck it up in 30 seconds. To keep it fresh I use my FoodSaver after every time I cut a slice off and store it back and take the air out to keep it fresh. So far so good.

With my feeding each dog 1 cup 2x day, the small bag lasts about 2 days. No problems with odor. It is expensive but my fur babies are worth it. I am a health conscious person and the 2 ingredients in Freshpet that I don't like are Carrageenan and natural flavors. Science proves that Carrageenan is Carcinogenic to humans and animals. This is the 8th ingredient on the list of ingredients. Natural flavors is a cover up for "other" ingredients that the manufacturer doesn't want you to know about. READ LABELS, understand what you are feeding your pet. Do your research. I tried this product for my two felines and they do like it. I have not had any issues in the last month with mold, smell or spoiling. My cats are 14 years old and quite healthy. I had to throw away both bag and roll on 2 separate occasions and am very disappointed as these are not cheap and I expected them to last the 7 days after opening.
I just purchased 5 days ago 2 small beef bags with an expiration date of April 2019 and have not even opened them and they are now full air which means they are probably contaminated and will not last once opened. I am going to see if I can take them back to the store I bought it from for an exchange to hopefully get a later expiration date. I am not sure if there is a recall but after reading several of these reviews there seems to be similar issues. I had my 3yr. old Shih Tzu on Freshpet Vital for the last 6 months and had to take her this morning to the vet for a $1500.00 operation for bladder stones. She started with a UTI about one month into beginning the food. Never thought spinach was the problem as it causes oxalates. She has been suffering on and off with UTIs for the last few months. We should have been advised by the company about how spinach can affect these dogs or cats. I am very disappointed with this company.
I am so sorry to hear about your pet's recent surgery and history of urinary tract infections, I hope they are feeling better. We shared your case with our vet team, and we wanted to pass along what they told us:
Dogs can get a wide variety of bladder stones, and it is not known which type until the surgery and then the stone is sent off for analysis. The two most common types of stones are struvite and calcium oxalate. Struvite stones form in infection and are very common in dogs with a history of urinary tract infections and small breed dogs. Dogs can be more prone to urinary tract infections for many reasons with the most common being conformation of the urogenital tract. Calcium oxalate stones can be difficult to prevent because factors responsible for formation are not completely understood. In healthy dogs fed a well-balanced diet with spinach, it has not been shown to be an issue. Certain dogs that may have a predisposition, it might be recommended by their veterinarian to avoid certain foods that are high oxalate foods such as spinach. I would recommend to speak with your dog's veterinarian about possible causes and ways of prevention in the future. I would also recommend to review the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicines Urolith center . This website contains a wealth of information on bladder stones and crystals: https://www.vetmed.umn.edu/centers-programs/minnesota-urolith-centerFeel free to call us if you need any additional information.

He has had a few small seizures since starting the food but no big ones. He is so playful and loves to snuggle again.
I have read the negative reviews. The first thing I noticed is that almost all of them begin with how great their dog has done on the product. Then they talk about getting a bad batch of food. This is a fresh product. Have you never bought meat at the grocery store that you had to return because it was spoiled? I have. I started buying the chicken bites about a year ago when I lived in California. My cat LOVED it and I saw a great change in her behavior. Before she was always hungry and crying for more food no matter what I gave her. When I tried the chicken bites, she calmed down, slept through the night and wasn't begging for food. In fact, she only ate a small amount to be satisfied. I always provide dry food and, of course, water.
When we moved to Oregon a few months later, I started buying the chicken bites again, but they would not last. As soon as I opened the package it would start to deteriorate quickly. The expiration date was months away. I thought it was a fluke, so I tossed it and bought another one. Within a day, it had mold growing and the stench was so bad that I had to seal it up and take it outside. I decided to take it back to the market. The odor was so bad that the manager gave me a refund and two free bags as an apology.
I thought that was a great deal, but my cat refused to eat it. I smelled it and it was already going bad. I opened the second bag and she wouldn't eat that either. I threw both of them away. I then decided to buy the pate in the roll and she loved it. That was three months ago, buying one roll per week. For the last two weeks, I have noticed she is snubbing her nose at this and again, the food is rotting too fast. Sadly to say, I think we are going to have to stop spending money on food that rots long before the expiration date and more importantly I need to protect my cat's health and not take a chance of her eating bad food. I have purchased these products at different stores, so I don't believe it's a cooler issue, I think it's a product flaw. I am very careful about keeping the product cold and sealed at home as well.

Hi Colleen, thank you for reaching out to us. We are so sorry to hear your girl was not feeling well. Most of our rolls and roasted meals contain garlic powder at small amounts. Whenever a change in diet is made, it must be done gradually. This helps avoid the digestive upsets and food refusals, which can occur if a diet is changed too quickly. When feeding Freshpet for the first time you should gradually introduce the food a little at time, mixed with your pet's current food. Over time, gradually increase the amount of Freshpet. We will follow up with you directly so we can obtain the name and location of the store so our sales team can follow up with this issue. As our foods are all natural with no artificial or chemical preservatives, they can be naturally at risk for spoilage similar to other fresh groceries if exposed to oxygen for a prolonged period of time. Our 6 month old mini Blue Merle Aussie had stopped eating his kibble about 3 weeks ago. I tried the tough love without giving in and giving him treats and top ups but I started to get concerned because he is a puppy and needs to eat. Thought maybe teething and hormones were to blame but it was obvious he was bloody bored and was tired of the top ups of sweet potatoes, scrambled eggs etc. It was kinda getting stressful. Every time it was feeding time he'd just walk away. So I did some research and picked up the Fresh Pet Turkey roll with blueberries and spinach grain-free. Well holy cow. He was so excited and goes crazy for meal times. I'm so grateful I found this amazing product and it's full of good stuff and he literally seems so much more happy and content. His tummy issues have stopped also.

I owe you a most heartfelt apology. You responded immediately to my original complaint. I on the other hand failed to respond in a timely manner to your generosity. You not only sent me product the very next day after our telecon, but coupons as well. I will say that my Yorkie with the least amount of teeth was very happy with the chicken roll. She just wouldn't eat the larger chunked bag bits (L2 vs L1). The other continued on the bag bits. We finally fed both with the roll, which I slice and cube into quarter inch cubes and they are happy and eating very well.
Thank you for being so consumer oriented and gracious enough to provide the alternative product. We are extremely satisfied and grateful to have such a consumer oriented response from a company that we would have believed, until dealing with you, would have blown us off as complainers. Thank you again for your customer care being genuine. IT IS SO REFRESHING TO BE VALUED AS A CUSTOMER AND NOT JUST DISMISSED! I apologize again for not affording you the same courtesy of a timely response. My only excuse is I did want a trial period with the roll before I wrote. Ya'll are wonderful!!

My 10 year old Dachshund recently went down with IVDD (pinched vertebrae nerve) and we were told she needed to lose weight. She was recently on one of the top brand dry kibble, but we switched her over to the Freshpet Stews to see what she thought. At first, we mixed it half and half with the kibble. After two weeks, she is now on straight Freshpet and not only does she love it, she's losing WEIGHT! I would HIGHLY recommend Freshpet to anyone who is looking to change their pup's diet and wants to give them a controlled amount. Bubbles is a happy, healthier dog. We are sold!

I have 2 small dogs. A 1.5 year old Maltipoo and a 9 year old Chihuahua. The reason I began buying this product is because my Maltipoo was a little underweight. Although she has a healthy appetite and loves to eat! I began cutting a roll and chopping it up into tiny squares and adding it to her kibble. She loves it and she’s gained weight! My Chihuahua is more finicky. She ignores it or walks away. That’s when the puppy will eat her food too! I’m hoping the food will reduce their constant scratching as it drives me nuts and I hate to give them **. What concerns me are the dozens of negative reviews describing vomiting, bloody diarrhea and death! This terrifies me and I pray this doesn’t happen to my babies because I love them so much!

I have a rescue Bichon, he was a very picky eater, plus he acted like his food hurt him to chew. I had his jaw x-rayed, sure enough, blunt force trauma, broken jaw, jammed joints. I gave him Fresh Pet, awesome!!! He LOVES it, he waits for me to fill his bowl! No more waste, easy for him!!! Thank you for a great product I feel good feeding him.

I have two dogs, one 4 years old and one 14 years old. The 14 year old has a lot of trouble chewing and Freshpet has the ideal products for him. Both dogs really enjoy the food and it is easy to use. Although it costs a bit more I know I am giving them the best food possible.

I get a little bit of Freshpet and add a few crumbles to the regular feed recommended by our vet and our dogs now eat their dry food very quickly which was not the case prior to this change.

Freshpet is refrigerated and is only shredded chicken, peas, carrots and rice. My little dogs love it AND it’s great for them! They refuse anything else.

I have a Poochon who is the pickiest eater on earth. I have tried just about every brand of dry, wet, fresh food out there and she just turns away and I end up throwing it out. I finally saw the Freshpet Vital Small Breed fresh dog food in the store and said I might as well try. Well. She loves it. She eats it every day and there is no waste. I'm so happy as I was having to feed her people food but I wanted something with dog nutrition and this is it! There are 2 different ones, she loves them both. They are small bite size pieces and when I opened the bag and smelled it, boy, I said "That smells so good that if she won't eat it I will!" Thank you for making this food. I highly recommend it for any picky eater.

Called customer service rep to inquire as to why one of their products I have been purchasing is in short supply for several months. I have to frequently travel to 3 different stores to find one roll of cat this specific food. One specialty pet food store owner says he is at a loss and told me that he "receives only 1 roll every Tuesday"?! Store #2 says the same. I called Freshpet to see if product was going to be discontinued soon, recalled or whatever. I have been noticing that several bags of another of their products are very old and should have been removed by the distributor, also of concern to me.
The reason I started to feed this to my cats is because another brand was rancid and made all of our animals very sick last year. Now I want to know a little more about this company. The rep who was a company employee knew nothing about the products or cared much about. In my opinion if this is how they handle customer service then I am not buying this food anymore. I can only speculate as to the company culture that they have formed over at Freshpet. This is not cheap pet food either. They are on the high side of cost. I recommend everyone watch a documentary on the very flawed, self regulated pet food industry called "Pet Fooled" available on Netflix.

3 Chihuahuas and a Cheagle, needless to say meeting all the needs was getting quite daunting... until I took a chance and got my first roll! I mix it with their dry food, little warm water and a slice or so and not a nose snub in the lot! Even with 4 dogs a roll can last 5 days. Bonus is I can take a pinch, put a medication in it and they wont even spit the pill out anymore. Joy. I love my 'kids' and FreshPet rocks!

My 15 year old poodle and 3 year old yorkie love this food. They tell me when it's time to eat, and they clean their plates. The poodle is the picky eater. And it's easy to cut off how much you want them to have.
