Upon appeal with Embrace and further documentation from the vet, they did approve the claim.
Original Review: March 6, 2024
Short version: I bought Embrace Pet Insurance on 7/8/23, my dog had nausea and vomiting because of a 24 hour inflammation his small intestine on 9/7/23 so that made nausea and vomiting a pre-existing condition, so they denied a $1000 a 24 hour inflammation of pancreas claim on 2/19/2024, so any time he vomits before 2/19/2025 despite of cause, they can deny paying a cent toward his care.

Carried the insurance for almost two years for two pups before submitting a claim for an anal gland issue. It was denied because they said it was a pre-existing dermatological issue and they would not ever cover it or any other dermatology issues since it was a pre-existing condition. My dog was prescribed ** one time years ago for a bout of itching that was considered seasonal. This particular claim was for an anal gland issue and her anal glands had to be expressed. It was not dermatology related. I cancelled my policies immediately. Sadly, we were referred to them by USAA as my husband has been a USAA member for 57 years. I am very disappointed and will not ever recommend Embrace Pet Insurance. Quite a few folks have had similar experiences with them!

My vet's office has one receptionist who's known us 6 years, and will still file with insurance for us. I received a notice from Embrace that the routing number for my bank doesn't work. In other past insurances (like Medicare), if you owe them money it's a penalty. If they owe you money you're lucky to get a fair amount that you give up trying. We have peace of mind that with paying Embrace's fees, it's well worth it to have a company who doesn't give up trying for beloved pets and their families.
Thank you for your positive feedback, Kathleen! It's reassuring to hear that Embrace's commitment to resolving issues and providing support brings peace of mind for you and your beloved pets.

They do everything in their power to try and figure out how not to cover your pet. If your pet has any pre-existing conditions don’t waste your time with the company. They do any and everything to connect an illness to the condition. My pup was diagnosed with cancer and ended up passing after having a fight with pneumonia. They didn’t cover the visit for pneumonia because they looked in his record and it stated he has a blood clot. They turned around and tried to say it was a mass that could have caused his pneumonia. Even though there is record of the clot being gone. Even though this clot/mass wasn’t on his list of pre-existing conditions that they create. Now it is advantageous for them over a year into the policy so they bring it up. Please beware I am sure there are more honest pet insurances out there.
First and foremost, Calvin, we are so sorry to hear about the passing of your furry companion. We know losing a loved one is not easy, and having to follow up with us afterward can be difficult. We want to be upfront about our coverage and the exclusion of pre-existing conditions, which is defined and agreed upon in our terms and conditions. Thank you for sharing your feedback, Jean. We do offer an optional Wellness Rewards Program that you can add on in addition to the Accident and Illness Policy. Wellness Rewards reimburses for routine and preventative care such as vaccines, flea/tick/heartworm preventatives, spay/neuter procedures, dental cleanings, grooming, and training costs! Wellness is not insurance; it functions like a health savings account, helping you budget for your pet’s routine care expenses, with Embrace providing additional rewards for proactive pet care. Wellness is reimbursed at 100% up to the annual allowance you choose and coincides with your 12-month policy term. The program offers three annual allowance options: $250, $450, and $650. I understand this process may take up to 4 weeks & I am unsure of why embrace would still be missing certain information/records? There are no additional records available other than her recent visit at Smithridge veterinary center & past visit at new Fairfield animal hospital… & I have already explained this to customer service. Can someone please assist to complete these claims?
We are sorry to hear about your frustration with the claims process, Gabrielle. Although we try to process claims as quickly as possible, sometimes it can take longer to process the first accident or illness claims as we gather your pet's complete medical history for the medical history review. The review can take up to 30 business days to complete once we have received all the necessary medical history. Your claims will remain in a pending status while we are still reviewing all of the documents. The good news is that once your pet's medical history has been established, future claims tend to process much quicker, and our standard processing time is 10-15 business days. You are always welcome to reach out to us at 800-511-9172 to check on the status of a claim, and we are happy to help!

Hello Kenneth,
I'm sorry for any disappointment you experienced with your policy! In order for us to process any accident or illness claims, we need to first confirm we have the pet's full pre-policy medical history on file. We look for the detailed chart notes from any exams/visits that occurred within the 12 months prior to starting the policy and through the initial waiting periods. This does not mean we need a full 12 months of records (for example, if the pet was recently born or a newer addition to your family), that is just the parameter we set for any pet to make sure there was a sufficient pre-policy exam done and so that we receive the required records! I see you've already spoken with a representative in regard to the pending records and we are sad to see you go, but we understand you must do what you feel is best for you and your pet. If you have any additional questions, please give us a call at 800-511-9172 and we're happy to help.

I've been with the company, paying their premiums for 3 years. I've only ever filed 2 claims, both within the last 2 months for 2 different animals. They have had a reason to not pay out for either occurrence. I would not recommend giving the company a dime. You will be eating the cost of your vet visit regardless.
Hello Brice,
I'm sorry for any disappointment you experienced with your claims! Our only requirement in order for the coverage to take effect at the end of the initial waiting periods is that your pet was seen for a documented physical exam by a licensed vet either within the 12 months prior to the start date of the policy or within the first 14 days. We do strive to be as upfront as possible in regard to the terms and conditions of the policy, with it being noted in the acknowledgements that have to be agreed to upon purchase and in our onboarding emails. I see you've already spoken with a representative and we are sad to see you go, but we understand you must do what you feel is best for you and your pet. If you have any additional questions, please give us a call at 800-511-9172 and we're happy to help.

I’m very much wondering if it’s worth continuing to be a customer.
Hello Elisa,
I'm sorry for any disappointment you experienced with your claims! Although we try to process claims as quickly as possible, sometimes they can be delayed if we are waiting on any required documentation to process the claim (complete invoice, clear diagnosis/reason for the visit, or medical records). When we are missing information, our standard procedure is to reach out directly to the clinic on your behalf, but we do copy you on the requests for your reference so that you are kept in the loop. A few issues here. First of all, when I submitted the first claim, there were limited choices on the website to pick for my pet's condition. My pet had symptoms that were not described by the website. I picked the closest reason to file, which was wellness. I put her problems in the additional box as instructed to provide more details about my claim, which led to the second issue. The adjuster did not bother to check the additional note and code it as wellness, which was not covered by my plan and my claim was declined. I had to make a call to the claim department to justify why the claim needed to be reprocessed after my pet died. Third, the claims came "nickel and diming" taking things apart to make sure the minimum was paid out.
After my deductible, only a little over half was being paid out when my plan said the payout should be 90%. The only pleasant experience in this process was the kindness and empathy that I received from the agent who assisted me with my call and how quickly the claims were finally gone through though was not surprised with the EOB. I am a healthcare provider and have more encounters with insurance companies that are less than satisfying. It's disappointing that it is the same for pet insurance.
Hello Evans,
First and foremost, I am so very sorry for your loss! I am also sorry for any disappointment you experienced with the claims process. When a claim is submitted with "Wellness" as diagnosis or reason for the visit, it is automatically processed in our system as a Wellness Rewards claim, which is only for routine/preventative care. Because you did not have a Wellness Rewards plan added to the policy, the claim was not covered. I apologize for the confusion and I'm glad the representative you spoke with was able to help resolve the issue! In order for reimbursement to kick in for covered claims, your annual deductible must first be met. You can view a detailed Explanation of Benefits for each claim and any messages from the adjuster who worked on it by logging into your MyEmbrace account and selecting the claim information. You can also view further instructions here: http://help.embracepetinsurance.com/en/articles/4740402-understanding-your-explanation-of-benefits. However, if you have any additional questions or would like further clarification, please feel free to reach out and we're happy to help!

I submitted my pets claim which was denied multiple times without any real medical justification. The adjusters took it upon themselves to diagnose my pet with a disease she did not have & ignored physician's actual diagnosis. Their denial seemed to be rooted in simply not wanting to pay out. It took several letters from vets justifying their clinical decision making and an investigation by the department of insurance to have my claim approved. This took over a month and a half, stress. Would absolutely not recommend this insurance carrier and would urge everyone to have their denials reviewed. Please ensure that adjusters don’t take on the role of vets by making a diagnosis as it is illegal to do so.
Hello Marine, It’s very important as the administrator of the insurance contract that we follow the terms exactly as written and consistently for each insured when it comes to processing claims and appeals. As our terms and conditions state we are unable to provide coverage for pre-existing conditions:
32. Pre-existing Condition(s) means:a. A Chronic Condition observed by you or your Veterinary Provider prior to the end of the Waiting Period for your Pet(s) and any related conditions; or
b. An Illness or Injury that first occurred or showed Clinical Signs prior to the end of the Waiting Period for your Pet and any related conditions.
c. Undiagnosed conditions with the same Clinical Signs as those in a. or b. above are also considered pre-existing.
If you do not agree with a claims decision, you do have the option to set up an appeal with additional information from your veterinarian as to how the current condition is unrelated to the pre-existing condition and we can take another look. We see your appeal has been completed, but if you have any additional questions or concerns please reach out to us at 800-511-9172 and we are happy to help.

My dog suffered from sudden paralysis of her hind legs on 12/31/23. She was taken to our local emergency vet clinic, then followed up with her regular vet several days later. She was referred to a large vet clinic affiliated with a veterinary school and had surgery to correct a condition that had developed in her spine. I started to submit claims about 10 days after her surgery and hospitalization. I received e-mails from Embrace stating that several of my claims had been approved and my reimbursement had been deposited in my bank account.
When the money did not go into my account, I checked my online statement and the status of all of my claims had been changed. The ones which had been marked as closed had reverted back to “under review”. I contacted a representative by telephone who was very helpful, but had trouble figuring out what had happened. She eventually figured out someone had incorrectly labeled my claims had complete. Another reviewer had stopped the claims and requested additional medical records. This representative stated she could see where the additional records had been received and would be reviewed very soon. That was over a week ago, and my claim status still say pending medical records. I was under the impression that Embrace provided rapid reimbursement. Mine is a very large claim which had to be paid at time of service. This is totally unacceptable to me.
Hello Lisa, we are sorry to hear you had a negative experience. First and foremost, we hope your furry companion is doing well. If you go online to "seek GOOD advice" about ANY insurance, but in this case, PET insurance, make certain you read the fine print, i.e., "ADVERTISING DISCLOSURE (in part): We may receive compensation from the companies listed". In other words, GOOD reviews = $$$. My pet had a testes that did not descend; in Golden Retrievers, that usually equates to a much greater cancer risk. My Vet highly recommended surgery. $700 later, I submitted a claim to EMBRACE. A portion of the surgical procedure included removing the un-descended testes. Well guess what? That "portion" of the recommended surgical procedure was considered "NEUTERING". And neutering is NOT covered by the EMBRACE policy.
The real surprise came when they informed me that because a portion of the procedure included removing a testes (aka thus neutering the pet), and neutering in NOT covered, they denied 100%, REPEAT 100% of my claim. I need to make one correction: I stated it was a "surprise"; there is nothing that surprises me when it comes to the insurance industry. It's the ultimate "bait & switch" scam. Unlike companies that CLAIM to report "honest" reviews, I WAS NOT paid by anyone to leave a factual review/comment. IF you are reading this review, just know that the organization that "displays" this review, IS honest enough to notify their readers that they also "accept compensation from the companies they post review about".

I had been paying for this insurance for a while a full years, unfortunately my dog already had some preexisting conditions that wouldn’t be covered, but I stuck with it. The cost was increasing and I was considering canceling but I’m so glad I didn’t. My dog tore her ACL and she had a few appointments leading up to her surgery. Embrace covered every claim including the surgery. Unfortunately. Less than 3 weeks after her ACL surgery, she was brought to the emergency vet and needed emergency abdominal surgery, again, embraced covered the claim. I couldn’t be more grateful because you never expect to suddenly have to come up with thousands of dollars for things like this. The only thing I wish was that I could have had a higher coverage amount for my policy.

Thank you for providing that feedback, Clark. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your policy and we are sad to see you go! However, we understand you must do what you feel is best for you and your pet. Premiums do increase over time with all insurance products, and pet insurance is no exception. Your pets health or claims submitted are not currently a factor in the premiums. Some of the factors that impact premiums each year include the age of a pet, tenure of the policy, breed, and veterinary costs in the zip code where the pet resides. Our premiums are based on actuarial data, and approved by each state’s Department of Insurance. Over the lifetime with any pet insurance company you are likely to see very similar trends, it just may vary when the increase happens. We do structure our policies to allow each pet parent to change coverage parameters to adjust the premium based on what they feel is best for their individual pet and situation. Hello S. D M,
I am sorry for any disappointment you experienced with your claim! Unfortunately, a dermatologic condition (ear infection) was noted in the medical records prior to the policy purchase, making it a pre-existing condition. Per the policy terms and conditions, a dermatologic condition means "any illness related to your pet’s skin and is deemed to include ear infections and skin lumps from skin irritation or infection, such as interdigital cysts from pododermatitis, but not conjunctivitis or parasitic infestations." I see you recently spoke with the adjuster who worked on the claim, but if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out and we're happy to help!

When getting pet insurance the small print matters. The 6 month waiting period for ortho is one of those pitfalls. No one knows when a dog may have an issue so why wouldn't a reasonable company cover that day one. My dog had 3 teeth pulled because of an infection yet they are running me over the coals because 5 years ago my vet said he had some plaque on his teeth. My vet had to write a letter stating that observation had zero to do with the ailment requiring the teeth to be extracted. I think most of these companies hedge their bet but are unclear about how they decide on claims.

If you’re considering pet insurance from Embrace have an expectation that you will be immensely frustrated, feel as though you’re being interrogated instead of assisted, and have to hold the hand of every single person you come in contact with. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to do business with these people. They are absolute robots who have no ability to provide clear, concise, or accurate information at any stage of your claims process. Both vets that we use had warned us that Embrace is the worst pet insurance company that they deal with and that they have to constantly re-send medical records for their clients. Avoid the frustration and see pet insurance from anyone else - I’d be shocked if there is anyone worse.
8. By purchasing a policy, you give us permission to gather all medical history for your Pet(s) from all your Veterinary Providers as we deem necessary. The medical information must contain detailed Veterinarian examination findings and must be made available to us for review to satisfy the examination requirement in PART II. item 1.
PART II – CONDITIONS 1. Your Pet must have been examined by a Veterinarian in the twelve (12) months prior to the Pet Original Start Date as shown on the Schedule Page(s) or within fourteen (14) days after the Pet Original Start Date. Failure to do so will result in your policy defaulting to an Accident only policy. Meaning you will have no Illness Coverage and your Illness premium will be refunded. You may add Illness Coverage back onto your policy once a qualifying Veterinarian has examined your Pet and detailed records for the exam are available to us. This will result in your Illness Waiting Period end date changing to the date of the first exam. No Illness Coverage is available until a qualifying Veterinarian has examined your Pet, and Preexisting Conditions, if any, may be determined upon the date of the qualifying Veterinarian's examination.
Although we try to process claims as quickly as possible, sometimes it can take longer as we gather your pet’s complete medical history. Obtaining medical history is a process we are continuously working to improve. We work directly with your vet to gather any additional medical records needed to review your pet’s complete medical history and we copy you on any email request to keep you in the loop. The good news is once your pet's medical history has been established, future claims tend to process much quicker and our standard processing time is 10-15 business days. We see you already spoke with one of our team members who was able to assist in getting your claims processed. We appreciate you sharing this feedback as we are always looking to provide a simple and easy claims process while still abiding by our Terms and Conditions.

I've spoken with Embrace and they offer me no alternatives but to fire them and find other coverage. Embrace is a massive rip off and I'm filing a complaint with the Consumer Affairs dept in CA and with the AG's office. These insane business practices have to be stopped by us, the consumers. Get this though, I never have been able to reap the benefits of his insurance since he thankfully hasn’t had any accidents or illnesses. I never got money back, they only told me that since he has been in good health the deductible was dropped. Thanks I guess?? With the amount of money I spent these past 5 years paying for this useless insurance, I could’ve easily used that money to pay for his veterinary bills. Thankfully I switched to another pet insurance which gives me accident and illness coverage AND vaccine and dental coverage for only $34!!! Save your time and money and if possible switch to another pet insurance company!!

Embrace is my go-to recommendation because the customer service is excellent and they cover bilateral conditions. When faced with a life-threatening condition, I could focus on getting my dog well and not the vet fees. Embrace has been phenomenal all these years. Claims process is fast and simple. Policies can be customized to fit each situation, budget, and needs.
Premiums do increase for senior pets, but they didn’t turn away my 9-year-old rescue dog. They continued to renew his policy each year right up to when he passed away at 13. The Embrace staff even sent me a hand-signed condolence card! I’ll never let money decide if my dogs will get treatment because I know Embrace is there!
Thank you for your loyalty and kind words, Jill! We're honored to have been able to help support you and your furry companions over the years. Your experience highlights what we strive for - providing peace of mind during difficult times.

Everything was excellent working with you. I can't believe my puppy passed away so early. The shock is unbearable. Hopefully, I can recover and get a puppy again. I would use from day one, just like I did. The increases were a little on the higher side the past two years. The payouts could be a little faster. Nothing drastic that would make me not cone back.

I love my dogs as if they’re my human children & that means providing the most care I can for them. With that, sometimes comes a hefty financial responsibility. After an unlucky history with our pets to no fault of our own, our veterinarian recommended pet insurance to which we found Embrace. From getting a quote, customer service, billing (premiums included), and filing claims, the process of each step has been simple which is more than I can ask for. The customer service is always fantastic and I couldn’t ask for a better company to insure my furry family members with!

Very easy to submit claims! Quick turnaround time is appreciated. Has easily made us able to extend the life of our senior dog who had a kidney scare that would have been a difficult decision otherwise. Only complaint is that prescription dog food is not covered. Our dog medically must be on prescription diet but it is not covered on the plan.
Thank you for your feedback, Sarah! We're glad to hear that our claims process has been smooth and efficient for you. Your policy covers FDA-approved prescription medications for covered accidents and illnesses. Unfortunately, prescription food does not fall under that coverage but is reimbursable with the optional wellness rewards plan. Wishing your senior dog continued health and happiness.

I got Embrace for my beloved Phideoux, a chocolate Labrador Retriever. When I first got her insurance was to be covered in case she suffered an accident. I never expected she was going to have cancer. Embrace was with me since her first diagnosis. They covered her specialists visits, lab tests, and prescriptions all the way to her last injection. Embrace has a very friendly claim submission and a quick review with a rapid response. They always deposited the approval amount in 2 days. It helped me to keep up with expenses and being able to continue paying for my Phideoux treatment. When Phideoux went to Heaven they were empathetic and caring. I received two beautiful condolence cards that brought me comfort when I needed it. I love Embrace!
Thank you for sharing your heartfelt experience, Silvia. We're deeply saddened by Phideoux's passing, but we're grateful for the opportunity to support you both throughout her journey. Your kind words mean the world to us, and we're glad we could help provide comfort during such a difficult time.

I’ve been a loyal customer with Embrace since 2011. I’ve ensured 4 dogs through them. The experience was excellent until around 2020. There used to be personalized correspondence. Refunds have always been timely and claims easy to submit. Rates used to remain consistent throughout a dog’s life. Over the last few years much has changed. This year we received a generic email that our premium rates would be doubling. $300 per month for 2 dogs!!! No explanation. We’ve been forced to increase our deductible to the max to be able to keep our older dog covered. For years I consistently recommended Embrace to all of my friends with dogs. I can no longer soundly make the recommendation. Sadly, we will be changing our insurance with future dogs.
Hello Annette,
We sincerely appreciate your loyalty and understand that it may feel like you're being penalized. We want to assure you that it is not our intention for you to feel that way. Our aim is to provide comprehensive coverage, and as pets are insured for longer periods, we anticipate covering a broader range of potential risks. Consequently, the premium increases to align with this higher risk and the increased likelihood of coverage.
Premiums do increase over time with all insurance products, and pet insurance is no exception. Some of the factors that impact premiums each year include the age of a pet, breed, tenure of the policy and veterinary costs in the zip code where the pet resides. Our premiums are based on actuarial data of all the policies we have in force, and approved by each state’s Department of Insurance. Over the lifetime with any pet insurance company you are likely to see very similar trends, it just may vary when the increase happens. We do structure our policies to allow each pet parent to change coverage parameters to adjust the premium based on what they feel is best for their individual pet and situation. If you have any additional questions or concerns, we can be reached at 800-511-9172 and we're happy to help.

I am writing this review to share my extremely disappointing experience with Embrace. My interaction with them has been characterized by a questionable appeals process, selective use of information, and a blatant disregard for the evidence I provided. One of the major issues I encountered was their appeals process, which seemed designed to be deliberately convoluted and unhelpful. Despite presenting solid evidence disputing their claim of a pre-existing condition in my pet, they continued to ignore the facts. Our initial vet misdiagnosed the condition, and we sought a second opinion that confirmed the error. However, Embrace persistently refused to acknowledge the correct diagnosis.
It became evident that the adjusters and underwriters selectively choose certain verbiage to suit their agenda of avoiding claim payouts. During my interactions with them, I was appalled to hear an adjuster suggest that I personally go back to the first vet for more information if I wanted to appeal again. This is not only unprofessional but completely absurd, as it is their responsibility to thoroughly investigate claims. Furthermore, the company relies on policy terms and conditions, specifically #32 regarding pre-existing conditions, to justify their actions. However, it is crucial to note that our vet only officially diagnosed our dog after the policy was purchased. This fact seems conveniently overlooked, highlighting their unwillingness to consider the timeline of events and putting their profit over customer satisfaction.
In my pursuit of a fair resolution, I requested the cancellation of my policy. It is clear that Embrace prioritizes financial gain over ethical practices and customer welfare. I echo the sentiments of another reviewer who suggested that the company should employ vet techs. Ironically, one of our adjusters was a former vet tech, and this did not result in a more compassionate or customer-oriented approach. In conclusion, I strongly caution against choosing Embrace for your pet insurance needs. Their unscrupulous tactics, disregard for evidence, and lack of customer-centric values make them an unreliable and unethical choice. I encourage pet owners to explore alternative options with more reputable and ethical pet insurance providers.
Hello Shabril, we are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your policy, and your claim did not turn out the way you anticipated. The policy Terms and Condition, which are provided and agreed upon at the time of purchase, reviews our definition of a pre-existing condition which is as follows:
It’s very important as the administrator of the insurance contract that we follow the terms exactly as written and consistently for each insured. Ultimately we do have to go off the medical records provided by your veterinarian when it comes to processing claims and appeals. We see you are in communication with one of our team members to discuss your concerns and we appreciate you sharing this feedback as we are always looking to improve while still abiding by our Terms and Conditions.

I have had this insurance for my dog for probably 10 years. The price started out ok and had risen to 230.00 per month. It was my fault for not checking but my friends were paying a quarter of this price. It does not include any meds, shots or teeth cleaning. I called and had it lowered but it is still high. At this point, my dog is already at its breed's max age and afraid to switch. Think next time I am going with Nationwide. They did pay out on a surgery many years ago, but have well made up for it and I could do a few more surgeries and never cover the insurance I have paid. You would think they would cover teeth cleaning once every 4 or 5 years. Nope and if your dog gets a dental disease too bad.
Hello Don, we are sorry to hear that. We appreciate you choosing Embrace over the last 10 years. We know a premium increase is not ideal. Premiums do increase over time with all insurance products, and pet insurance is no exception. Some of the factors that impact premiums each year include the age of a pet, breed, and veterinary costs in the zip code where the pet resides. We do structure our policies to allow each pet parent to change coverage parameters to adjust the premium based on what they feel is best for their individual pet and situation.
As far as dental coverage goes, our terms and conditions state in Part III Coverage- We will reimburse you for eligible Veterinary Treatment expenses caused by Dental Illness in excess of the Deductible amount, subject to Co-Payment requirements and a $1,000 Annual Maximum sub-limit, for all Treatment(s) except dental prophylaxis, for conditions that started after the Waiting Period and during the policy period. Charges associated with the dental prophylaxis, such as polishing and prophy of the teeth, is only eligible for reimbursement through our Wellness Rewards program.

I had a difficult time understanding the changes in my insurance policies but that's probably because I am dumb (lol).
We are sorry to hear about your frustrating experience, Sandra. Fetch is a separate pet insurance company and is not affiliated with Embrace. We want to be upfront about our coverage and the exclusion of pre-existing conditions which is defined and agreed upon in our terms and conditions as: 32. Pre-existing Condition(s) means: a. A Chronic Condition observed by you or your Veterinary Provider prior to the end of the Waiting Period for your Pet(s) and any related conditions; or b. An Illness or Injury that first occurred or showed Clinical Signs prior to the end of the Waiting Period for your Pet and any related conditions. c. Undiagnosed conditions with the same Clinical Signs as those in a. or b. above are also considered pre-existing. There is a 2 day accident waiting period, a 14 day illness waiting period, and a 6 month orthopedic waiting period for dogs. We do however distinguish between temporary and permanent pre-existing conditions. If a pre-existing conditions is deemed temporary, if your pet goes 12 consecutive months without any recurrent signs or symptoms it could be eligible for expiration so we can provide coverage in the future. I submitted my claim via the app and it was processed within two to three days, which was awesome!!! I purchased the premium package and included the wellness. Embrace paid the entire claim!!!! My only issue is that I wish the wellness was higher than $650. The main reason I got it was for his dental cleaning. However, by the time December rolls around for his cleaning, it’ll all be used up on his grooming and part II of his wellness! :-(. So far though, I’m quite satisfied!! :-)

My cat had an incident that came up in September and they fully denied my claims because I took him to the vet in February during their "trial period" for a wellness check to check on his shots and to get him adjusted to the move. Their practice is to go by Vet notes not diagnosis or tests done. They will do and find anything to not pay you for the coverage you paid and claim it under pre-existing conditions. Save your money and try another company because they don't care.

I am very sad to write this today. For the past year my wife and I had been extremely happy with our Embrace Pet Insurance. As a family with six cats, we were impressed with how quickly Embrace responded to emergencies once the initial claim is processed. When our beloved cat Rutabaga died, we were reimbursed nearly $10,000 of what turned out to be his end of life coverage fairly rapidly.
Unfortunately, our experience renewing our insurance has not been similarly pleasant. We were shocked to find our policy had increased from $80 to $113 per month for 5 cats. The only claim we made (that was covered) was Rutabaga's inoperable tumor. We have spoken to customer service twice about this, and no one was receptive to our complaint – probably because it is obvious that we’d be on the hook for new pre-existing conditions if we were to change insurance providers. We strongly recommend thinking carefully about who you get your pet insurance from. The last thing we expected was our other cats’ premiums would increase so much after losing our Rutabaga.
Hello Neal, we appreciate you sharing your experience through such a difficult time with Rutabaga. Please know we are thinking of you with this loss.

I have a German Shepherd diagnosed with hip dysplasia and regretted not looking into pet insurance sooner. Another German Shepherd came into my household in November and I began researching pet insurance options. I narrowed it down to Spot and Embrace. However noting a vast difference, I appreciate the transparency Embrace offers, they will inform you within the month what will and will not be covered due to pre-existing conditions. Spot on the other hand will not until you present them with a claim.
I want pet insurance for the peace of mind and security. After seeing so many reviews around insurance as a whole not paying out due to inflated pre-existing conditions (ex. a dog vomits, and now no GI issues will ever be covered), then paying into a policy for years and being denied from something I could've been told month one. That idea gives me the opposite of peace of mind. Additionally, I found Spot to be more expensive, for the same monthly price, the annual limit was less.
When I got back the pre-existing report of what conditions will not be covered for my 7-year-old, I was initially disappointed with how some signs and symptoms were interpreted. Of course, I expected the hip dysplasia to make an appearance in that department. Though as others have said I noticed that a minor skin condition that went away without medical intervention was turned into an incurable, permanent concern.
However, I'm so grateful to the Embrace team & specifically to Kyle ** for handling me with so much professionalism and patience. He helped me through the appeals process and stayed in contact with me, he reviewed all the what-if scenarios I could come up with in the event the appeal didn't go in my favor. The appeal was reviewed and resolved very quick and thankfully this one was overturned. I find them to be very fair with pre-existing conditions. No pet insurance would cover my pup, Lobo's hips dysplasia at this point. Above all I can appreciate the transparency into KNOWING what will or won't be covered.

It would be helpful to have a breakdown of what is covered and what is not and why when communicating to members about the reimbursement covered. It all feels very subjective and doesn't leave me feeling like I am getting the most out of my policy or even understanding what the policy is covering according to my claims.
Thank you for sharing your feedback, Lauren! We always aim to be upfront about our coverage. Your policy terms and conditions outline the coverage and exclusions, while the explanation of benefits for the claims provides a breakdown of the coverage. For a guarantee of coverage prior to a procedure or treatment, you do have the option for pre-certification. In general, the people at Embrace are very nice to work with, fair-minded, and the reimbursements are more generous than what I'm used to getting from health insurance for humans! Sometimes their response times can be excruciatingly slow (recently, it took 4 months to settle a claim). And oftentimes you have to submit an appeal because they mis-categorize a type of treatment my dog received that is, in fact, covered by my policy. If you have patience, they generally get around to agreeing with your appeal, as long as it has grounds.
Last but not least, the annual premiums jump quite a bit as dogs age. The older my dog gets, I have to weigh the expense/value of insurance against my dog's life expectancy. So I'm caught between a rock and a hard place...do I spend a lot for insurance I might not use? Or pay for costly insurance which covers treatment that might or might not improve quality of life for a senior pet?
Hello Tim,
Thank you for taking the time to provide that feedback! I apologize for any disappointment you experienced with the claims process. We try to process claims as quickly as possible, but sometimes they can be delayed due to pending medical records, a clear diagnosis and/or invoice, or in this case if an appeal is submitted. However, I am glad to hear you have overall had a positive experience and I hope you won't hesitate to reach out if you ever have any questions or concerns in regard to your claims in the future!
We also understand your concern in regard to premium increases! Premiums increase over time with all insurance products, and pet insurance is no exception. Some of the factors that impact premiums each year include the age of a pet, tenure of the policy, and inflation. Our premiums are set by our underwriter, based on actuarial data, and approved by each state’s Department of Insurance. We try to keep up with the actuarial fluctuations as best as we can and adjust premiums accordingly from year to year.
Embrace's coverage structure allows each pet parent to change coverage parameters to adjust the premium based on what they feel is best for their individual pet and situation. If you are interested in exploring these options, you can do so via your MyEmbrace account under "Change Coverage" and can view more detailed instructions here: http://help.embracepetinsurance.com/en/articles/4428785-changing-your-pet-s-coverage. My GSD has to have surgery with only a day’s notice of finding his problem. The Embrace representative talked me through the process of starting a claim. Within two days, Embrace had the records from my vet, had processed the claim, and reimbursed my costs. The communication with Embrace was easy to access and I was constantly updated throughout the entire process. Of special note, when I told my veterinarian office staff that my insurance was through Embrace, they complimented how easy it was to work with Embrace. By the end, all went well and my GSD is fully recovered.

This company basically pretends to offer such great insurance for your pets, and was the preferred provider by USAA, but apparently because I did not read the fine print and was told in a condescending way that I should have read in advance of the policy, my cat's claim was not valid. At no point did any representative call me to explain the policy. I had made a call several days before I took my cat to the vet because THEIR WEBSITE WAS DOWN and I was not able to review the policy because of their failure to have the information available on-site, which they keep urging us to do. The representative on the phone told me that I had a 90% coverage for my cat! She went into detail about this coverage BEFORE I took my cat to the vet, with NO MENTION of this pre-policy thing. Unbelievable.
Hello, Heather. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your policy. We try to be as clear as possible about our exam requirements and pre-existing conditions which are in the policy terms and conditions: Your Pet must have been examined by a Veterinarian in the twelve (12) months prior to the Pet Original Start Date or within fourteen (14) days of the policy. Failure to do so will result in the illness waiting period being extended to the date of the first exam on file. This is also agreed upon when signing up for a policy and sent out as a reminder in your onboarding emails. We see you already spoke with a supervisor regarding your concerns, but if you have any additional questions, please give us call at 800-511-9172 and we’re happy to help.

This company will give you the Idea that they cover your pet for "everything". Pay $20/month extra and they cover wellness visits, dental cleanings, etc. The problem is if you have any pre-existing issues they will deny coverage. You're denied if you don't use your funds by submitting a very long detailed claim. If you don't use your funds, they keep any excess_ no refunds no rollover, they pocket your money. Buyer beware.
We are sorry to hear you have been disappointed with your insurance policy and the optional Wellness Rewards program. The Wellness Rewards works like a health savings account, helping you budget for your pet’s routine care expenses and Embrace throws in a little extra to reward you for being proactive with your pet’s care. Wellness is reimbursed at 100% up to the annual allowance you choose. It is important to pick an allowance that you will use fully as it does not carry over to your next term which is included on your Wellness Rewards certification of coverage as well as commonly covered items.
We want to be upfront about our insurance coverage and the exclusion of pre-existing conditions which is defined and agreed upon in our terms and conditions as: 32. Aloha, I am writing a review about our first claim for our 7 year old dog Kona. After finding a broken tooth in her bed, it turned out that she needed three teeth removed. It was a bit back and forth trying to get the insurance company what it needed from the vet but after about a month or a month and and a half we finally got it sorted and the claim got paid. Happy in the end so all good. I wish the insurance company had communicated better with the vet's office, but I guess it could’ve been the fault of the vet as well. I know it’s a busy office.
Thank you for sharing your experience, Danielle. We're pleased to hear that Kona's claim was resolved satisfactorily, and we hope she had a quick recovery! First of all, they cover all preventative vaccines and Heartworm medication as part of the $500 coverage. Not expecting to use it so soon, the 2 year old pup we have insure started limping. I took him to the vet and X-rays were taken and found a torn CCL on the left hind leg. I submitted the claim and it was accepted and we were off to a K9 ortho surgeon for the repair.
By the time we arrived at the surgeon we had met our injury and illness deductible set at $500 which isn’t hard to do at a vet's office. All we had to do was send in an itemized estimate for the surgery and it was approved. Embrace paid ALL BUT 10%. I am so grateful having this insurance, especially in this day. Another thing I will mention, all claim were approved and paid out in less than a week. And if you are USAA member, submit your member number and receive a discount.

Three months later I called to reinstate my policy and I was told I could only do it up to 2 months after cancelation. So I was able to sign back up with a new plan but now dealing with preexisting conditions not being covered that would have been before my canceling. In all the years I had Embrace coverage I paid religiously and my dog has been healthy enough that Embrace has not had to pay out much compared to what I paid in. I am disappointed that in today's economy they could not have been more forgiving and reinstated Lexis policy. It is disappointing.
Hello Kathryn, thank you for sharing that positive feedback about our coverage and team. We are happy to hear they are always helpful and we have been quick to reimburse. We are sorry to hear you had to cancel your policy under those circumstances. We do have a strict reinstatement policy as your pet would have a gap in coverage that would allow their health status to change. We hope this information provides some clarification surrounding your concerns.
