My three year old Yorkie is lucky to be alive after a neighbor gave her a treat from your company. We spent the day yesterday wondering if she was going to die. She was very lethargic, had severe vomiting, diarrhea and seizures. One treat almost killed my baby girl. This company needs to admit something is wrong with their food and treats. My neighbor felt bad about giving her this and today his dog is sick too.

I have two cats. One of them I have been feeding Blue Buffalo to since he is 6 weeks old. He is now 4. He favors dry food and has never had wet food. He is 5 pounds heavier than his litter mates. I know because I am in touch with people who adopted them. Thinking I was giving my furry family members only the best, I got a kitten a year ago and also put her on Blue Buffalo. She favors wet food. Blue Buffalo is so incredibly expensive, but I thought this is the best out there and it is worth it! I have had nothing but problems with the little female on the Blue wet food. She vomits constantly and recently started peeing. Not in a territorial spraying way. But she would pee in the bed while sleeping. I would always attribute her problems to her feral ways thinking it was just taking her some time to adjust to the indoors. I feel so incredibly bad now reading these reviews and I am just horrified that it never once crossed my mind that this top of the line amazing brand was the culprit behind my poor kitten's issues. Shame on Blue Buffalo. Time to switch to a MUCH safer brand and save major money in the process.

I "use" to be a huge fan of Blue dog food. My dog has been eating it now for years. Recently she has had the worst diarrhea and GI problems and it's coming from this food. She has been wanting to go potty constantly and making mistakes in the house (which she NEVER does). So far my case is mild compared to what others have experienced but I have definitely taken her off the food and taking her to vet today. Something is up with this food, please take your fur babies off of it.

Our indoor cat that never had an issue is presently with the Vet. So far he hasn't been able to determine what the issue is. When we mentioned the food the cat was on he mentioned that he has seen some issues but nothing this bad. The cat stopped eating 2 days ago and couldn't keep food down. Today she took in some water and kept it down. The symptoms are very similar with several of the posters here. This is the second bag of food for the cat and there was a change in look of the food between the 2 bags. We thought we were doing something great for the cat with this food vs. the plastic bucket of food from the big box store. The food has been tossed. Hopefully the cat will be able to recover.

She started having loose stool, and goes outside to eat grass like crazy. Her vomit is yellow. Today it's a lot of it, 2 handfuls full. I am bringing her to the vet tomorrow. Please help. Thanks.

Blue Buffalo was the first food I fed my cat and it immediately made him sick - throwing up and watery stool. My vet said he was near kidney failure and asked what I was feeding him. When I told her, she said Blue Buffalo has WAY too much Vitamin D and that she has has numerous pets brought in who are on Blue Buffalo with the same symptoms, some who have even had to be put down. This mega-corporation is charging people for a quality product when they are selling dangerous GARBAGE! Those "life bits" actually contain cornhusks which can also cause allergies in pets and they are no more "healthy" than the regular kibbles, it’s just a marketing scheme as is their whole approach. They even have a lawsuit against them by Purina and their argument is that it's just smear campaign by a jealous conglomerate.

I'm not a fan of ANY huge corporation, but last I checked BB was worth well over $50 billion. They also have claimed this whole time to NEVER contain any animal by-products, but recently admitted they do have chicken by-products in their food. When I went to comment on their Facebook page, I thought it was strangely odd to see ONLY positive feedback, while seeing so much negative feedback when I did a Google search. Well, after I commented on a few things, trying to make people aware, they immediately deleted my comments and banned me. So, that explained why there was no trace of anyone on their page having anything bad (truthful and honest) to say about them. WHAT A JOKE! That right there tells me all I need to know. I don't trust them, the truth will come out and I can't wait for the public to realize this company has been lying to us the whole time. I hope they go out of business and have to reimburse all of those people who had hefty vet bills like myself or worse, lost their pets because of their "food". This company disgusts me.

I purchased the BB dry cat food for my two cats. They were both previously on Hills Science diet dry cat food and had no GI issues. I switched to blue buffalo because it was cheaper and supposedly a good product. I still had some of my other cat food left so I transitioned my youngest cat to the BB food first. She didn't like the food, but I figured that she just needed some time to get used to it...Then she developed hard dry poop in a couple days even though she was continuing to drink plenty of water. My other cat was switched to the BB food three days ago. He immediately developed diarrhea. My cats have never had GI issues like this. I am so thankful to have discovered this site and read through your stories before my cats became sicker. I'm switching back to Hills today. Blue Buffalo really needs to take some responsibility for their product...Too many poor animals are getting sick.

I recently switched to Blue dog food for our dogs and after a week, we noticed 2 of them started to be less active. After 2 weeks, one of them became so inactive she wouldn't go up steps but we thought she maybe slipped because it was so icy here. Three weeks, she was whimpering. She was in so much pain we took her to the vet - thinking she possibly had a fracture only to find out no broken bones but her liver levels and blood counts were through the roof. They said to switch her food immediately as she may be allergic to something in it and put they her on meds to help with the liver. This week, our youngest dog is showing all the same symptoms and brought her to the vet also - they put her on meds also and again said to switch the food for all our dogs so we did. In a day on different food, they both are showing signs of improvement. We will never buy Blue dog food again. Very disappointing to buy food you are told is one of the best on the market only to spend $500 in a week on vet bills because it caused them to become so ill. I pray the damage this dog food has caused is not permanent.

After 3 days, she began vomiting (sometimes w/ blood) and had diarrhea (sometimes with blood). She was perfectly healthy before eating this food. We are making an emergency trip to our vet today. This food obviously needs to be recalled and taken from the market. I am hoping our kitty did not eat enough to have been seriously damaged from Wilderness food.

I know for a fact that Blue Buffalo is the reason behind my dog's illness. My dog, Boe, is a 3.5 year old male lab. We have fed him Blue Buffalo since he was 8 weeks and have never had a problem. On November 18, 2014, we purchased a new bag from a local shop as we were running low. We finished up the last bag and then started him on the new bag around November 22/23. Our dog started vomiting November 25th. He also vomited November 26th and November 27th. He still had good energy but we switched him to a rice and turkey diet for 3 days to let him stomach settle. Boe got better and didn't throw up again. So we figured whatever his issue was had passed and started feeding him his Blue Buffalo again. A day later, on Monday morning, Boe threw up again. We rushed him to the vet. We weren't sure what caused it. We didn't think it was the food as Boe has been eating it for 3.5 years. So we got X-Rays, Pancreatic tests, Blood Tests, fecal tests - all came up clear.

All the vet could see was a very sensitive stomach. She gave him anti-nausea shots and cans of GI food. For 5 days, we fed Boe GI food paste mixed with rice. He got better. We thought this was all over and he was healthy so we put Boe back on Blue Buffalo Saturday night and all day Sunday. Monday Boe threw up again. Twice we took him off the Blue Buffalo only to have him get better. And then he would start throwing up once it got into his system. All the tests have come back clear and his environment has been consistent. The only thing that has changed it the Maybe this is a bad bag? Maybe this is related to Blue Buffalo openly admitting that there are chicken by-products in their food. I just know that Boe will never eat their food again.

Before I finish - I would just like to address their statement where they admit that their food has chicken by-product "unknowingly to them" - The whole altercation means 1 of 2 things. 1) They knew about the previous bad reputation of the supplier and looked the other way; or 2) They haven't been doing quality checking. Both of those are pretty bad. I know chicken by-product won't hurt Boe - but who knows what else is in there... they obviously don't. I'd also like to point out that I have been paying premium price for chicken meal and was sold chicken by-product at a pretty high price. BB has stated that there will not be a recall as far as they are concerned. If what I'm buying doesn't match the labels - there should be a recall.

When I complained their legal dept refused to allow customer service to talk with me. They say no proof that it was from their food even though all he ate. Complained to attorney general and their response is they object to what I said about them and their vet. Seems they spend more on their legal dept than the quality of their product.

We have been using Blue Buffalo with our small Pomeranian for about 1 year, and also with our new 5 month old Rottweiler. Up until late November 2014, everything seemed okay, until our Rottweiler puppy started vomiting and having diarrhea consistently over a couple of days. We took her to the vet and they ran tests and everything came back negative (no parasites) - nothing. We fasted her prior to taking her to the vet, and then began giving her a boiled chicken and rice diet. It took a few days for her to pass, but no diarrhea or vomiting. We just now started 12/6/2014, transitioning her back to Blue Buffalo, giving her a mix of the chicken/rice along with about a 1/2 cup of Blue Buffalo. She had diarrhea this morning!! So, now we know it is the food! Please DO NOT purchase Blue Buffalo! We are taking both of our dogs off of Blue Buffalo immediately! We will continue to feed them a chicken/rice diet until we can start transitioning to a new dog food. We will begin using Nutro as soon as possible. Royal Canin is a bit out of our budget range.

I started feeding my 5 year old, very healthy male cat Blue Buffalo dry and wet food five months ago. I saw all of the advertising and thought I was doing the right thing for him. Well, about three weeks ago, he started moaning when he went to the litter box. He stopped eating, refused to even drink water, and then went into hiding. We took him to the emergency vet. Five hours and $500 later, the vet shows us an x-ray of his bladder. His bladder was blocked because it was filled with struck the struvite crystals.

The vet asked us if he had had UT problems in the past. We said not at all. She then asked if we had changed his diet recently. When we then told her about the change to Blue Buffalo, she got an odd look on her face. She said that she had seen a "number" of emergency bladder blockages in cats lately whose owners were feeding them Blue Buffalo. And although she could not "prove" that BB was the cause, she strongly recommended us to cease feeding him BB.

The saga continued when we had to take our cat to our regular vet the next day. He was hospitalized for a week and a half. He was catheterized for several days with the urine filled with blood and urine. The blockage was so bad that at one point the vet said that he might have to perform surgery. Thankfully, our cat improved and all of the crystals passed. This disaster cost us $1300 and a lot of anguish and guilt. I am positive that BB made this otherwise healthy cat gravely ill and near death.

BB Healthy Start Divine Delights & Savory Sizzlers/Beef Sausages - My 6 yr. old Yorkie died last night. And after reading all these other complaints I believe it has a lot to do with your food. My little baby girl experienced a lot of the same: yellowish vomit then white foamy vomit; white foamy in her little mouth; statuesque - by just standing there - when I picked her up she couldn't even give me kisses! My precious little one has eaten the BB Divine Delights for about 2 years now - there didn't seem to be a problem until now. When I looked to see if there were any recalls I was directed here. There were times she would just sniff her food and walk away. We didn't understand what was going on as she seemed to like BB.

Yesterday (4 Dec 14) I took her for her usual morning walk before I headed out to work - 5:45 AM. When I came home from work she wasn't there to greet me. I noticed vomit on the rug - yellowish piles and white foamy piles. When I located my baby girl she just stood there - barely able to stand and barely able to look at me. I rushed her to my vet who started fluids/tests immediately. My baby girl was 80% dehydrated - I couldn't believe it as she was drinking as usual until yesterday when her water bowl did not have a drop left in it. The toxins in her liver where in the 1,000’s when they should only be 80-100.

I have contacted BB for some answers but they have not returned my calls. Does anyone know of anywhere else I can go to try to get some answers besides complaining here??? I truly believe BB food & treats killed my precious baby girl. Please DO NOT purchase this food or any of BB products. They should not be allowed to shelf this stuff as it is killing our babies!

Since this site won't let me reply, only write my own review, here goes. I use Blue food almost exclusively. I do cat rescue, have since I was a kid. Growing up with a nutritionist/nurse for a mom, we did primarily medical cases. Not just cats in casts or whatever. We actually did more with cats and even small dogs with either vomiting or diarrhea that standard treatment hadn't helped. There isn't a cooked or raw diet I haven't prepared at least once! The basics line is really good at dealing with protein sensitivities. I use it for that all the time because when you're talking about a shelter pet, if they can't eat SOMETHING that comes in a bag, forget them ever getting adopted!

The major thing to remember with the LID formulas is there is just ONE protein there, so you can have 2 responses. Either what they are having problems with isn't there and they do great...... OR the protein there IS the problem and they get worse!! LOTS worse!! The upside of that is you just found your dog or cat's allergy trigger. Now you know what to avoid! If you put him on Salmon Basics and he got worse, likelihood is his trigger is salmon or fish in general. Either way, try a fish-free formula. Basics Turkey or Duck or Wellness Lamb would be my next choice. If neither of them worked, it's probably time to have the allergy testing done since what's left are such common ingredients that trying to avoid it without knowing exactly WHAT you're avoiding is all but impossible.

Both have had increasing bouts of gas and nasty diarrhea. She almost can't make it to the dog run. Also she has started mildly throwing up this week after she eats. Their poop is quickly growing fuzzy mold and it's very mucusy. Nothing else has changed, we haven't been anywhere, so I'm changing their food today. For $50/bag, I expect the best ingredients. The Fromm dog food is hard to find so we decided we would switch her to Blue Buffalo since it seemed like the same quality and around the same price. The first day, she vomited 3 times that night. She's a pretty finicky eater as it is, so when she wouldn't eat as much we would add wet food or once in a while a raw egg to her food. She's vomited 5-6 times in the last 3-4 days which is not like her at all. She also had the worst farts and a few days we could hear her stomach in the next room with how much noise it was making from gas. She hasn't been lethargic or acting sick and her poop seemed to be the same consistency (she has always had pretty soft poop). We couldn't figure out what it was until coming on here and reading reviews. The only thing we have changed is the food we gave her. We are switching back to Fromm today!

Thinking that Blue Buffalo was a high quality cat food I purchased it for my indoor cats. Having just adopted a healthy, loving 6 month old kitty from the local shelter I thought we were helping her out. She was in perfect health. The first week we had her she was in good health but a week later she had intractable diarrhea. Her stool came back negative for any issues. Her stools became liquid one week after bringing her home. When we took her to be spayed (thinking she was perhaps getting better) the vet said after they gave anesthesia the stool rolled out off her like water. She has actually lost weight during the couple weeks from shelter to home! I was horrified!

Looking at all of the possibilities the only thing I could figure out was the Blue Buffalo cat food which was new to her. After desperately seeking a solution to her problem I stumbled upon this forum and I am absolutely disgusted at the evident poor and dangerous quality of Blue Buffalo cat food!!! I have been lied to and it has put my animals in grave danger. My little kitty is now on a digestive recovery food and seems to be going in the right direction again.

Shame on this company for promoting a product that is evidently killing cats and dogs slowly through whatever toxic substance they are adding to their inferior and frankly dangerous product. Follow up to my May 2014 review - my dog died last night. Recap of May 2014: we switched to BB Wilderness food and within a week or two, both of our dogs became violently ill. One recovered, the other one developed Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Protein Losing Enteropathy. He had trouble processing certain proteins and they would leak out of his intestines and into/around his lungs and heart. It took about 2 months of steroids and hand cooked meals to get him back to "normal" but it was a gradual downward spiral until earlier this week when he just couldn't fight anymore.

I don't have 100% proof that this is what killed him, however both dogs got sick from it and worst case scenario, it didn't help what may have been a pre-existing inclination towards something like this. If your dog starts coughing, take him to the vet ASAP and start feeding him/her fresh foods if at all possible. Even BB has no idea what is going into their own foods, as they made clear recently when they admitted chicken byproducts were "somehow" in their food....makes you think what else is "somehow" finding its way in there. If anyone has any questions about these issues feel free to email me. I feel like I've become an expert on dog digestion since making this fatal mistake 6 months ago. **

She started off screaming bloody murder, and that's when I began to find the endless piles of awful diarrhea hidden around the house. The other two male cats seem fine as of now. They do endlessly beg in the kitchen more than normal, but I haven't caught any irregularities in bowel movements. My female Schiller is looking worse as the days go by. I had to move her to a dog crate with a litter box and some BB/water because the diarrhea was destroying my home. I came home from work today and found she tried to eat the BB but vomited inside the bowl, along with being covered in diarrhea. Her little butt is scary BEAT red. He started eating the special food last night and still had 5 piles of diarrhea with blood this morning and refused to eat.

Tonight he is finally feeling better, acts normal again and just ate. But I got Really scared. I will say though that if your dog does not get a lot of exercise (we live on 5 acres fenced) then the grain free is probably not a good idea because it is very high protein. My sister used the same food on her schipoo and he gained a few pounds pretty quick but he is a lap dog and is not very active.

Rebate coupon for $10 would not print out. They would not send the coupon or the rebate (after filling out the coupon) to a post office box. There is no such thing as any national dog food manufacturer that has not caused pet deaths. So it is time to move on and Blue Buffalo is no exception.

We feed our dog, Emma, homemade food and treats because she is allergic to wheat. I was out of the country and we ran out of treats, so my mom thought it would be okay to try her on Blue Buffalo. Emma nearly finished the bag before I threw the remaining handful in the trash. She became super incontinent for 10 days and then got very sick. She was hospitalized for 3 nights and the doctors kept asking if she got into rat poison because her blood work came back showing high calcium + high phosphorus which often indicates high Vitamin D. She does not have kidney failure or liver failure. I looked up on the internet about Blue Buffalo only to learn they recalled some of their food back in 2010 due to high Vitamin D and 36 dogs were very sick after consuming their product. Are they having the same problem now? We are in the process of tracking down our receipt of purchase for the treats.

I have two cats who have both been having bad reactions to their Blue Buffalo food. I switched to the brand over a year ago, and one of them’s been barfing 3-5 times a month, while the other's been having constant diarrhea. They are indoor cats, so I'm able to monitor what they eat. Been around cats my whole life and know this is NOT a normal reaction. Frustrated because I want what's best for them but no longer think it's this food brand.

A few months ago, I switched from Purina to Blue Buffalo grain free dry cat food. It was recommended by my local pet store, Pet Supplies Plus. My four cats seemed to like it, and I felt like I was doing well by them. The food isn't cheap! I have a cat that has skin issues and it cleared them up right away. My cat Eric, had always been overweight, so when he began losing weight, I took it as a good thing. I thought because he was receiving better nutrition and less filler, he was losing the weight. When we started the food, he was twelve pounds, now he is nine, and still shrinking. When bones began to protrude from his entire body, I became very worried. I was considering taking him to the vet, but the next day, it became even more urgent. He started refusing food and water, and was very weak. I took him to the vet and they did a blood test. They determined that it was feline hepatic lipidosis, which is a condition affecting the liver. The inside of his mouth is yellow, he is depressed, vomits frequently, and is still refusing food and water.

After spending $300 that I couldn't afford (and right before Christmas), I was given several meds and IV sub-q fluids I must administer on my own. I have been having to syringe feed him food and water several times a day, most of which he vomits up. I'm so scared and angry about what has happened. The vet said the underlying cause could be several things, one of which was a toxin introduced. I am convinced Blue Buffalo is to blame. I have taken my other cats of this food, and thrown the remaining food away. This food needs to be recalled, before more precious pets are made sick. I was shocked to find this website. How can 800+ bad reviews, claiming injury and death be a coincidence?! They can't. That's not how things work.

Angry doesn't even begin to describe how I feel! We bought our very 1st bag of Blue Wilderness Rocky Mountain Dog food for our 11yo black lab Logan 2 weeks ago 11/7/14, as his current brand was changing formulations and I'd heard that this brand was really good. We started slowing adding the blue wilderness slowly, progressing to 1/2 and 1/2 this past week. He started wanting to go out during the night (always slept through night), drinking tons of water, on Tuesday and Wednesday nights last week. We had snow so never thought to look at his stool in yard. By Thursday night, was visibly sick and wouldn't eat the dry food, but wolfed down 1/2 can of Vet canned GI food. Took Logan to the vet on Friday, and our Vet was certain he's got into "some kind of poison". He had very little red blood cells, very low iron count, and no platelets - basically our dog was bleeding to death. Our vet tried to counteract with Vitamin K and steroids, but nothing worked. He died from a massive gastrointestinal bleed - bleeding profusely from his nose and rectum on Friday night. We will be having the food checked by a toxicologist, and I have all his stools from the yard. It's the only think of to do. Beware!!!

I fed my pregnant female the Blue Buffalo Puppy formula dry dog food. Her along with my male had absolutely no problems with this food. My male actually gained some weight which I approved of since he was a little under weight. After my female had her litter I continued the puppy food thru the nursing period and all the pups were very active and healthy. I sold all the pups at 9 weeks and switched gradually over to the senior formula. This is when I noticed a problem. My female would throw up daily and started to lose her fur. Her beautiful red hair color turned to a dingy faded color. I started to research Blue Buffalo's claim about the purity of their dog food when I came across the claims made by Purina. As I read on with other pet owners experiences, I noticed they had the same problems. I immediately discontinued Blue Buffalo brand food and purchase a Purina brand. The vomiting stopped right away and I continued now only with this brand and type. I'm not making any claims here, I just want happy, healthy pets. You be the judge.

I have a two year old lab, I have been giving her Blue Buffalo since she was a puppy. About two weeks ago she started having bad diarrhea and vomiting. We thought maybe she got into something in the yard. We took her to the vet and they could not find anything wrong. They put her on medication and I gave her rice and meat for a few days. My husband thought it could be her food so we threw it away a full bag that she only ate from for three days.

After three days of the rice and meds I try to mix a very small amount of her food back in with the rice. A few hours later my dog was sick with diarrhea again. I am throwing out the brand new bag that I haven't even used a half a cup from. After reading the other posts I was upset, it has to be her food. There is no other explanation. I switched to Hill's ideal balance Made in USA. I will not risk another try, I love my dog, as do you. DON'T GIVE YOUR DOG ANY BLUE BUFFALO PRODUCTS!!! So I wonder if the bad bags all came from Petsmart and it is actually a Petsmart problem. Where do they store the food before it's shipped to stores?

My Experience with Blue Buffalo hasn't been as horrendous as most reviewers here but I have stopped using this food for a number of reasons. We have a 1 1/2 yr. old Brussels Griffon and 1 1/2 yr. old Pekapoo mix. Both have been fed Blue Buffalo since about 8 weeks of age. Both dogs seemed to tolerate the food okay although our Peekapoo has been a very finicky eater and usually only will eat her food after the other one threatens to take it. Our Brussels on the other hand will eat anything and everything and since we got him would occasionally throw up (once every week or two)... usually bile, sometimes with undigested kibble mixed in. I had always attributed this to him eating other things he shouldn't be. I still felt uncomfortable with him having such frequent bouts of vomiting at such a young age.

So a few months ago I decided I would start trying another brand of food to see it would help any. I ended up buying a small bag of Taste of the Wild Prairie formula to try out because it had similar ingredients, was also grain free and had excellent reviews. For the first 30 days of transitioning him to the new food, I gave him his meal in two separate bowls, one with the new Taste of the Wild, One with the Blue Buffalo Wilderness. Two things have happened since I started the process. First, every single day through the transitioning period, he would eat the Taste of the Wild first, lick the bowl clean and then move on and finish the bowl of Blue Buffalo. Secondly, he has not thrown up a single time since moving on to the new food... almost 3 months now.

I was so pleased with the results I started offering some of the Taste of the Wild to our peekapoo. She's a bit smaller so I didn't think she would like the larger kibble size. Through the first week of offering it to her, she has cleaned out the bowl of the new food and let the Blue Buffalo sit without touching it... every time. That was already enough first hand information for me to move on from this food, now let's look at the company Blue Buffalo itself. Founded by Bill Bishop who previously cofounded Sobe Lifewater and later sold out to Pepsi, and prior to that was a marketing guru for several other beverage companies. This guy is a marketing genius and had no prior experience with animal health or nutrition.

Most pet food brands have started out as family run feed mills that have been around for decades. I'm not implying that this information should automatically make BB untrustworthy but it's something to think about. Blue Buffalo undoubtedly staffs any number of pet nutritionists to help develop their formulas and I am confident that their food is still better than many grocery store brands you can buy...but...when it comes down to it, are you going to trust a marketing guy who just jumped into the pet food industry with the intentions of making himself even richer or someone who's been in the business for decades?

Now lets look at the ongoing lawsuit between Purina and Blue Buffalo. In May of 2014, Purina filed suit against Blue claiming false advertising by the company. They provide expert analysis showing that despite what Blue Buffalo claims, there is indeed a significant amount of poultry by-product meal found in their food, along with a sampling of other things that shouldn't be there such as corn and rice hulls. Blue Buffalo ferociously fires back at these claims calling them flat out lies, even providing their own expert analysis to disparage Purina's independent testing. A quote from Bill Bishop himself:

"I'm writing to you about the lawsuit Nestle Purina filed today alleging that Blue Buffalo has lied to you about the ingredients in our pet foods. We categorically deny all of these false allegations and will aggressively defend the integrity of our brand and our products. It is an easy thing to make unsubstantiated claims, put them in a lawsuit and then publish them all over the web to disparage and defame a company. It is quite another thing to prove those allegations."

Fast forward a few months to October and Blue Buffalo releases a statement saying that there is in fact poultry by product meal in their foods. Of course they place the blame entirely on one of their suppliers for mislabeling ingredients even going further to say that every other food manufacturer is using those same ingredients. It seems to me that...even if the company really didn't know about the mishap which I highly doubt, a prudent pet food manufacturer would test their ingredients when they arrive at their processing facility to you know...make sure they contain what the label says. But then again, Blue Buffalo doesn't even tell you where their food is manufactured. Does this sound like a trustworthy company to you?

Since moving on to Taste of the Wild, I can't say I have reason to feel 100% safe because the brand is associated with Diamond Pet foods who have somewhat of a history of recalls on their food as most companies have. However at least the company actually DOES test their food and issues recalls when there is a problem. I'll take that over a brand that adamantly refuses any wrong doing just to save face while pets nationwide are getting sick off of their food.

We kept telling him, "You got plenty of food and water, what more do you want?" Now looking back on his behavior, I wished that we would have discontinued feeding him that brand. He was so sick that we brought him to the vets. They were very concerned over his condition and had him on IVs. He seemed to recover for a time after we fed him only chicken and rice. Unknowingly we kept feeding him his regular dog food after he got better. One morning I found him lying on the floor and barely responsive. He died a short time later. Had we only gone with our suspicions and discontinued feeding him BB, he may still be alive.

I'd been feeding my two cats Blue Buffalo for 5-6 months. They ate both wet and dry products. My older cat, Sadie, was about 11 or 12 years old, but still active and curious. My kitten, Nala, was extremely hyper. Sadie didn't really like the Blue food. Nala gobbled it up. She loved it. I thought all was well. In late September/early October, Sadie started appearing "sick." I ended up taking her to an emergency vet, and I was told she had a multitude of issues, one of them being small kidneys/kidney failure. I tragically had to let her go on October 6, 2014. I attributed her death to a combination of old age and infections.

Now it is almost 2 months later, and my Nala is staying overnight at the same emergency vet I had to take Sadie to. Two nights ago, Nala threw up a large amount of food, and then lost control of her bladder on me. "She ate too much," we said. After that episode, she was lethargic (very odd for her). "Maybe she has a cold," we said. Later, she refused dinner. Refusing dinner? That's absolutely not like her. So, $1000 later at the vet, X-rays show gas, feces backed up in her colon, and food stuck in her stomach. An inability to use the bathroom. High white blood cell count. All tests for viruses are negative. The vets are puzzled, as there is no blockage or foreign body in her GI tract. There is no reason for her terrible constipation.

Two enemas later, she still is not passing anything. What on Earth could cause a cat to suddenly stop having bowel movements? I started searching online for clues, and happened upon these reviews. Why is it that all these otherwise healthy pets, who happened to eat Blue in the last few months, are dying? I am switching Nala's food immediately, and am hoping she can come home soon. If she is not able to eat or have a bowel movement soon, I don't know what I will do with myself. The FDA and Blue Buffalo are about to get an earful from me.

Both out and inside the house is puppy proof. Finally he had persistent diarrhea with blood in it. He was sleeping all the time and had like asthma attacks breathing through his nose very fast as if gasping for air. We rushed him to the hospital where a vet told us that BB IS NOT a good food to have a dog on. Nothing was wrong with a dog, poop sample is fine, he got fluids, antibiotics just in case, and special vet food. He started eating the special food last night and still had 5 piles of diarrhea with blood this morning and refused to eat.

Tonight he is finally feeling better, acts normal again and just ate. But I got Really scared. Before we switched to BB (it was his first bag) we fed Science Diet which also had chicken for protein. Our dog is babied, he gets a lot of exercise, love and attention and he got really sick. I registered here specifically to Warn people about BB! I did research online yesterday and it seems to be happening a lot, with dry food bags expiring 2015!

She has been eating Blue Buffalo Senior for about two years with no problem. I purchased the last bag two weeks ago. After eating it for a week she became lethargic and started having episodes of the shakes, followed by diarrhea and vomiting. She spent 5 days at the vet and they couldn't find any problems in her stool samples. They changed her diet and we brought her home after she made a firmer stool at the vets. We fed her the prescription food for 3 more days and she was fine. The fourth day home we mixed the prescription food from the vet half and half with her regular blue buffalo Senior food and that night she started the yellow diarrhea again. We put her on a diet of white rice for the next 3 days and she was back to normal.

She is now on Fromm Grain Free food and has been doing great for the last week. The reason we feed her grain free is because two years ago she started losing plugs of hair all of the sudden while eating regular Blue buffalo Food. Our vet said it could be the grain and we should switch her. So we stayed with the Blue Buffalo brand. In my opinion Blue Buffalo is changing their recipes and refuses to take any accountability for the problems it causes. I got in touch with a regional sales rep and he told me flat out that the $500 dollar vet bill was my problem and not Blue Buffalo's.

Gradually he developed diarrhea, which I expected with the abrupt change in diet and new family/home. On day 8 he had full blown liquid stools. I did some research to find out that several people were having the same problem with Blue Buffalo products. I started him on pumpkin/rice/chicken mash which he devoured as if he had not eaten in a week. On day 10, after stopping Blue Buffalo, he is now vomiting and pooping blood. I also started my three cats on BB indoor grain free dry food in chicken and seafood. They really didn't like either but I thought they would eventually eat it and it is suppose to be great for them. This past weekend my Cayenne kitty, who is never been sick and is always happy and hungry, began howling like I have never heard her before. If freaked us out! Or since I live in Florida was it a lizard?

So, I have a 5-year-old male rotty/shep mix. Took him to Vet for check up recent minor surgery. I was concerned cause he had lost weight (without trying). But Vet was happy with his weight since he had been overweight and we did work on bringing him down from 142 to 125-127 lbs. He was 122.98. Vet said well he's a big boy a good poop could be 3 lbs. I just listened, but in the back of my head it didn't sit right with me. In the meantime I did notice that he wasn't as excited to eat actually quite apprehensive which is very unusual, but still displaying that he was hungry. He became lethargic and again I thought well maybe it's the meds and antibiotics from the surgery. Although again in my gut feeling something was "OFF" about my lively, loving furbaby.

I opened a new bag of BB chicken & rice healthy weight large breed & canned food that I only mix a little in with the dry kibble. I had noticed he started having looser stool and thought that was odd since they have been so solid even after the surgery. Well 3 days after his post surgery visit he became violently ill foaming at the mouth and salivating like a rabid St. Bernard. We got him settled in the house for the night and I slept with him cause I was so worried he was gonna throw up again. He slept through the night and seemed better in the morning. We Went for our morning walk after I fed him only 1 cup of kibble and a little wet. He did seem lethargic and thankfully we can take him to work with us so I could watch him all day.

I fed him just about a 1/4 cup kibble rice & wet food a few hours later. In the mean time I called the vet and talk to Dr. He said just watch him and if he throws up again just bring him in. Well, I noticed he was salivating bad again and decided to take him home thinking he was holding his vomit til we got home in his own backyard. I got him in the car & he vomited in the back seat of the car. I immediately drove to the vet. They did an exam on him and everything was fine, and they said he probably just had a gastrointestinal upset and sent me home with special wet food to feed him that was easily digestible, and a shot to stop the vomit, and gave him fluids. I asked the vet "Well if he is sick, isn't better to let him vomit to get whatever it is out of his system?" He said yes and no. The no being it's very hard on them throwing up.

We went over all the possibilities of poisons, etc. that he may have gotten into. Even the Vet said he was surprised because I watch him like a hawk & don't let him smell too much while walking, and always very cautious with him. That night was the worst. He stayed in the yard for 5 hours salivating and I really freaked out when he started digging in the grass almost frantically and burying his face in the ground!! My dog was digging his own grave!!! I was flipping out. So 5 hours of not leaving his side I finally got him in the house and again slept with him all night. He finally ate at 5 am, and again at 8 am. I have only been giving him the food from the vet, chicken & rice I made.

Everyday he seems a little better, but still very lethargic. He is not drinking a lot of water, so I am feeding him ice cubes. He is going #1 & #2 now. It has been 72 hours since this started and I have been literally beating myself up and racking my brain to think back on what could have happened what could he have gotten into when I turned my head for a second?? Was it the new squeaky balls I just got him? Were they contaminated?? What could it be? Then I sitting on the couch tonight & it popped into my head. HIS FOOD, what if it's his food? How could it be? He has been on BB strictly for 4 years now with never an issue!

So, I do a BB recall search and this site pops up & I start reading all the same stories, symptoms, and reading the same shock & disbelief that it really can be the BB that is harming all of our beloved furbabies! I am appalled that BB has not come forward thus far and done a voluntary recall.. I am not taking any chances. I am not feeding him anymore & switching brands now!! And yes, I will be contacting BB direct, and yes I will be taking my baby to Vet in the morning for blood work just to make sure no serious damage has happened! :(

After tests confirmed a pituitary mass, I wanted to give him what I thought was the best food to help him gain his strength back. I switched him to BB Wilderness Holistic, senior formula. He just turned 13 on the 12th of November, but he was still very strong and full of energy prior to the Cushing's. After about a week on the BB, he developed very loose stools. I started mixing rice and yogurt in with the BB to try to help him. The stools got looser and looser until he was passing nothing but water. He was getting weaker, and I knew he had to be dehydrated, so I brought him to the vet for fluids. She also sent him home with an antibiotic for whatever was causing the diarrhea.

Eventually he got so weak, he stopped eating. I was lucky to get him to eat a few pieces of roast beef or ham. He was even too weak to eat his hard cookies. It seems that his downhill spiral started at the same time I switched him to the Blue Buffalo. It breaks my heart to think I was hurting him, when I thought I was doing the best for him. I had to make the agonizing decision yesterday, when he couldn't stand for more than 30 seconds. Prior to that, he lost all interest in going for rides in the car, which he usually got very excited about. The stairs were too much for him by that point. My guilt will be with me forever.

He's been put on anti-nausea meds, antibiotics, and a prescription wet food. He would get better for a couple of days, until we'd finish the course of meds and wet food and then start him back on his BB - Sensitive Formula. Soon after, he'd start the dry heaving and vomiting again. Since he's been eating BB for over two years now, we didn't think it could be his food. However, after reading these reviews and realizing the pattern, we have switched him to another kibble altogether. It's been a week now and he has not thrown up. Hopefully, we are done with this ordeal! I am so frustrated that more is not being done to make Blue Buffalo address these concerns.

UPDATED ON 07/15/2015: I just wanted to post a follow-up to my November review of Blue. After reading all of the negative reviews and my dog's recent medical problems, I decided to take 3 of my dogs to the vet. All of the dogs had yeast, ear infections, blood in their stools, and one had a severe UTI. Our Aussie was diagnosed with a neurological illness, which appears to be a common problem with dogs on Blue Buffalo. His illness never improved and got progressively worse, resulting in his death. I did not take 1 of my dogs because she was not showing any signs of illness; this was my dog which was not fed Blue Buffalo. I honestly believe Blue Buffalo either caused or at the least contributed to all the dog's medical problems, including his death. I don't know what happened but sometime in the fall of 2014 Blue Buffalo dog's food changed for the worst, as there are way too many people having the same complaints.

I'm starting to think the cause of my cats recent symptoms might be caused from blue buffalo indoor and salmon flavored kibble. One of my four cats recently died from lymphoma. It was then I really started researching the types of foods we were feeding them. I heard a lot about grains and how bad they were so I decided I would no longer feed them crappy foods especially ones with grain. I switched the can food right away and the hard kibble slowly. We tried all of the grain free blue buffalo can food but they wouldn't touch them. They did however eat the hard indoor cat food at first but not a lot of it so I bought the salmon flavor and they ate that one for a while also.

Since switching to blue buffalo, 2 of my cats have had blood in their stools and my 3rd cat has been throwing up a lot and has had blood in his vomit. The 2 with blood in their stool do not eat the hard food anymore and haven't passed blood since. My 3rd cat has had blood work, X-rays and stool sample tested but all came back ok. We have had an ultra sound done and they found a mass but the biopsy came back clear. We have another ultra sound scheduled to biopsy the lymph nodes because he keeps vomiting. All my cats also started drinking a lot more water and lost weight. I cannot say for sure that blue buffalo food caused these problems, but until I know for sure what is, I will not give any of my cats the blue buffalo.

We spent extra money on the Blue puppy chow aka "the good stuff". Over the last two weeks he has been getting diarrhea, vomiting (phlegm) and not eating. He kind of picks at the food but will eat very little. I started making him a little gravy by adding water to it and he will eat a little more if I do that but not like he usually does. I figured it is because he is teething and the kibble hurt his mouth but I started researching because he really wants nothing to do with his food. My searches included terms like 'my dog doesn't like his Blue food', things like that. I thought maybe he is just bored with the Blue. That is when I found the other reviews describing the same symptoms as other dogs. HORRIFYING. I couldn't imagine our little puppy dying! I called the store where we got it (Tractor Supply) and told them to look into the reviews online and to consider pulling it even though there is no recall. It would be the right thing to do....Anyway, I will switch my puppy to another brand and hope we have better luck. Some people have posted that their pet now has neurological damage - I hope we caught this in time.

Blue Buffalo Wilderness Salmon - I had been feeding my mastiff Blue Buffalo adult and senior, but because she's been troubled with ear infections (probably yeast), I switched to the grain free variety. I began by giving her about 1/2 cup Wilderness/2 cups of the other and gradually increased the proportions. As soon as we went past 1/2 and 1/2 she started getting diarrhea. She was getting up in the night, having accidents during the day - this dog was completely housebroken and now poops in her room every day. I've had her on rice with a little pumpkin the past 3 days and she's still got really soft smelly poops. I talked to a very nice woman at Blue Buffalo today and she said "oh yeah- because Wilderness is so high in fat and protein, it's not unusual for dogs to get diarrhea from it." Now really! I've looked all over the bag and I don't see any warning about this happening. And what kind of food is sold with the company knowing that it can make your dog sick? I'm very disappointed in this brand of dog food and I'm not buying it again. I hope I can get my dog to stop having diarrhea one of these days.

I have been a customer of Blue Buffalo for over a year now. Initially, I began to feed my black Labs Life Protection Formula with Chicken and Brown Rice after receiving a recommendation that they'd do well with it. They loved the food. However, my dogs occasionally have allergy-related skin problems. As a precautionary means, we decided to cut commercial grain from their diet and switched both of them over to Blue Buffalo's Basics with Turkey and Potato. Up until this point, I have been very happy with the food.

On Thursday night, I bought a large bag of Blue Buffalo's Basics Turkey and Potato and fed my dogs for dinner. Early next morning, they were both vomiting. We stopped feeding them to give their systems a rest, but their vomiting continued for two days, along with extreme diarrhea. They were both continuously sick for more than 48 hours and having trouble holding down liquids. After consulting our vet, we took both of them in to receive an IV, anti-nausea medication to help their stomachs relax, and to make sure their vital signs were all okay. They were both extreme dehydrated upon arriving at the vet. Fortunately, they are now on a diet of boiled rice, chicken, and canned pumpkin and seem to be feeling better.

I am accustomed to seeing dog food cause stomach issues when it is newly introduced, however my dogs have been eating this for a long time. Moreover, new food or not, I've never seen symptoms this bad. This bag of dog food literally cost me $560. Since we don't feed any treats other than their kibble, and were home with the two dogs the entire weekend, we are certain it was the kibble and not another source. I can only speculate what the issue in the food is, but I'm keeping the kibble around in the event I can have it tested or send a sample to Blue Buffalo. After reading other recent reviews, it looks like other customers are having similar problems. Please do not buy this food until Blue Buffalo announces a resolution to this issue.

She will still eat some of the Fancy Feast, but will not touch this dry food. She seems to know which one is causing the problem. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow. I did a 7-day change over from Pedigree dog food I thought was too cheap and causing his problems. I researched dog foods and this came highly recommended so I thought I would spend the extra money on a new dog food. Since he has been on it, he poops a lot and it is getting softer and he drinks a ton of water! No diarrhea, but he has so much gas, farts all the time and man do they smell.

I noticed a slight tremor on his head the past two days, and he is lethargic. Yesterday he fell down the stairs and last night he lost his balance and peed himself. His blood work came back normal, urinalysis normal. I just fed him the Blue now and while researching causes I ran across this site. I am flabbergasted. I will stop the food today, I wish I hadn't just fed him, thought about making him throw it up. I will try making chicken and rice from now on, but in the meantime I have to now rule out brain tumor or dog food. This is so wrong!!! I don't have the receipt from Petsmart, all I have is the bag of food.

Our 13 year old black lab has been on BB Fish and Sweet Potato for at least the past 4 years and has loved it. Six weeks ago he had his annual check up including blood tests. All was fine - no problems at all. Two weeks after his check up I noticed a lump on his belly that had suddenly appeared. Our vet removed it and sent it in for analysis. It was cancerous and our vet said it was an aggressive cancer. Our boy recovered just fine and then two weeks ago his health started slipping fast - being lethargic, depressed, etc and suddenly had no interest in eating his BB. We attributed it to the cancer.

We started mixing cottage cheese with his BB to get him to eat which he would but only if it was mixed with cottage cheese. Then we began to realize that he seemed fairly good until he ate dinner (BB with cottage cheese) then he would crash with no energy for the rest of the night. Today we gave him no BB but fed him Moist and Meaty instead. His energy level tonight is the best we have seen for the past 2-3 weeks. Not sure what to think but will continue with the Moist and Meaty. I will give an update in a week or so. Today was the first time to see this site and felt compelled to tell of our experience. Again, I can't say for sure but given the other posts, I am now very suspicious.

We have been using Blue Buffalo Dry Food Senior for years with our older dogs, beagles. Our oldest passed last year from a tumor on his liver. He was 16, so we did not think much of; he had a happy life and no other major illnesses. 3 years ago, we rescued another beagle and started him on adult BB. He was 1 1/2 when we found him. About 3 weeks ago we woke up to our young one vomiting. It was all food and toy stuffing, apparently he had woken up and started to tear apart a toy and had eaten the stuffing. He vomited 5 times in 2 hours and wanted to lick everything in sight during this period.

Took him to the emergency vet because he was previously diagnosed as an epileptic and we were afraid it would trigger seizures. Blood and X-rays were normal, he did still have a lump of presumed to be stuffing in his stomach, however it was moving down. We were given anti-nausea medications and went him. Since then, he continues to try to lick everything in sight to bulk up so he can throw up, including his tail when we were not watching. He has had more blood, X-rays and ultrasounds done - all normal. He goes there during the week for daycare because we are afraid to leave him alone for fear if he is not allowed to lick up whatever he can, he will continue to chew himself. This has been like this for 2 1/2 weeks and the internist and the neurologist can't find anything.

The next step is to scope him to see if there is anything there. I am waiting for the vet to call to arrange this appointment and continued day care for next week when I decided to see if BB changed their formula because we have all hashed this out and there is nothing new or changed so I thought maybe this formula had changed. So I Googled BB formula change and this is the first site that came up. After reading these reviews, I think that it must be the food. I'm going to go with a chicken and rice diet for the next couple of days and see what happens. I think we will still have the scope done in the meantime just to rule out this last possibility that it could be something there but I will speak about the possibility that it is BB to the vet when she calls. They know he is on BB but that didn't bother them. So now this is my game plan and now we wait...

My puppy is thriving on Blue Buffalo! She transitioned from Science Diet at four (4) month which required a handful of the newly introduced dog food being mixed into the familiar dog food. She's strong and active with a beautiful coat. Her stools are consistently solid and she is eating twice a day and having bowel movements 2-3 times per day.

Perhaps some of the folks 'switching' between flavors are doing so abruptly (and dogs cannot handle a quick transition of their daily diet - even among the same brand). It seems a bit staged/peculiar that I'm reading almost daily reports from October 7 - November 4th bashing Blue Buffalo. Was an alert from Consumer Affairs sent out prompting any bad experiences from Blue Buffalo? No. Attributing a dog's death to Blue Buffalo is pretty serious. Those owners writing in from October 7th - November 4th (NOTE THE CONSISTENT CHAIN DURING THAT PERIOD) may have detected their dog's 'ailments' earlier with some visits to the vet. These seem to report their animal getting sick out of the blue (either immediately after switching blends or after several years of use) with some dying. Be encouraged to read reviews outside of this website.

A few months ago, I read some negative press about BB, but ignored it because our dogs were healthy. I purchased a bag of senior food on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 from Petco. On Monday November 3rd, Zeek slept in. He is usually up, as soon as our 3 year old is up. I let he and his brother outside, but Zeek did not go down the stairs to do his business. He came in and brushed up against my 3 year old and just cried.

I went to touch him and he cried again, something was definitely wrong. I immediately called the vet and took him in. He was panting, shaking and salivating. He acted as if he were suffering from paralysis. Scared me to tears. The doctor did X-rays and a complete blood work up and there was nothing. We were sent home with a hefty vet bill, some muscle relaxers and pain meds. He continued like this for 2-3 days and started acting like himself, but had not eaten much. Today, he exhibited the same symptoms only after he has eaten his food. I convinced his food is bad and causing his sickness. I will be throwing out a $55 bin of food.. Never to purchase again. Please stop hurting our four legged family members.

After trying other brands & bombing out (cat either would not eat it or was allergic with skin itching), I saw Blue Buffalo had a new product, BB Basics Duck dry cat food, so I got it. Cat liked it & didn't get sick, but his skin itched (allergic). So, after that bag ran out, I bravely went back to BBB Turkey & Potato (dry), hoping the situation was fixed. YEA!!! My cat loves it, and no diarrhea!! Also, his coat is smooth and shiny again! A note to dear Blue Buffalo: Thank you for fixing the problem - please be careful - my kitty & I really need and appreciate your cat food! I recommend this cat food, but mistakes do happen.

Have been feeding my cat BB Basics dry 2 yrs. Happy with it & cat did well. Then he got diarrhea. Vet gave Flagyl & probiotics, but it did not help. I found this site & stopped the BBB dry & Flagyl, & just gave the probiotics & canned food. He immediately got better. The bag of dry food BBB had a "lighter color" and I was worried they changed their formula or changed ownership (they did not change ownership). Just read that one of BB suppliers gave them an ingredient with by products (chicken meal), and Purina is suing BB! BB claims to not have known about it, and is stopping this ingredient. Could that be the cause of my cat's diarrhea?

That's when the foamy mouth and vomiting and diarrhea started. I thought we just got a bad batch and bought more. It was not crushed or powdery but dogs still did not want it. Still showing symptoms and my mom's old English swelled to the point like he would burst after one small feeding. They are supervised and contained so I know it's not trash eating. I decided to write a complaint after reading Tammy's comments about Anna. What a beautiful cat--- and, so young--- like my cat. Please read below:

My beloved Bobo Magic Panda bear, a five year old Norwegian Forest cat/ Oriental mix, died on Monday, October 27, 2014. He had been fed BB Sensitive Stomach dry cat food since I adopted him from the local humane society, along with Fancy Feast can food daily. I was shocked that I took him to the vet to get well... not to die. Bobo had no pre-existing conditions since he was a kitten..... perfect health. Well, until about one month before he died. Bobo started running in and out of the litter box, along with looking for anywhere to pee in the house. This was not his normal behavior. I took him to the vet immediately... was given antibiotics for an infection... and took him home.

Two weeks later we were back at the vet again. Same process-- antibiotics. The vet mentioned putting Bobo on CD and I commented about my dislike of corn, wheat and soy in dog/cat foods in the Science Diet foods at the vet office. Da, dumb me---I wasn't thinking it could be the BB dry cat food I had been feeding my magical Bobo. After the 2nd round of antibiotics wore off, I was back at the vet office because Bobo was not crying out in pain, not to mention he was throwing up. The vet kept him for the day (a Friday), cleared him out of any crystals, gave him fluids. I decided to take him home for the weekend with oral antibiotics.

That was my last weekend with my magical "Bobo Magic Pandabear. " Bobo was one of those male cats that can sit on your chest "just so..." and cause your blood pressure to go down... Bobo knew when I needed to zen out. He was so much more special than any words I could type here--- remember he was a Siamese mix.......I had to take the day off from work the day Bobo died because I was so angry. I am angry thinking that I had purchased the best dry cat food that I thought would keep Bobo with me into "old age" for both of us. I will be an advocate into finding out if it indeed was the BB Sensitive Stomach dry cat food that was his demise. Shame on you Blue Buffalo.... should that be the case.

My poor cat Tybee is in the Emergency Vet now for 3 days with a catheter. He had a urinary blockage and couldn't urinate. This is a very serious condition and he might not make it. I have had several conversations with more than 1 vet about this. They told me that the food is the problem. I protested and defended Blue Buffalo (Wilderness) food saying it was a good, grain-free food. Yesterday after another talk with the vet treating my cat, I was convinced the food is the problem. She said they have seen several cases like this from cats who eat Blue Buffalo food. Tybee had been throwing up for almost a week before we noticed the urinary problem. I have another female cat so last night, I returned all the unopened Blue canned and dry food I had. I had just bought them a few days ago and luckily hadn't opened them. The food I was using was the Blue Wilderness grain-free dry and an occasional can of their wet food.

For the last year I had been combining the Weight Control with the Indoor to try and compensate for my female who is overweight and male who is skinny. They are brother and sister cats and are 4 years old. This last month I was using the Weight Control combined with the Salmon Formula. We also gave them the Blue canned food on occasion all varieties and the Blue Treats. I believe my boy got sick originally from the Salmon Treats. I only give treats about once/week and after opening the bag and giving them the treats, the vomiting started. I am saving the treats and unused food for evidence.

So yesterday I call my sister in Georgia to warn her about the cat food. Guess what...her older female cat is sick with a UTI and the vet said the Blue Buffalo food is the problem. She also argued with him defending the food. He said the smaller companies just don't do enough testing of their food. Both our vets recommend Hill's Science Diet Urinary formula and my vet said the Royal Canin is also a good choice. So I am switching immediately and just called my Mom to tell her to get her dog off the food too. I am so upset and mad at Blue Buffalo right now. I will be telling everyone about this and hope to save other pets and owners from going through what we are right now. Please pray for my boy Tybee to get through this...and by the way the vet bill is $2,000 so far.

I have read previous complaints and want all people reading this review to know how honest and genuine this post is.... Beware of this pet food! I feel awful right now, like I poisoned my kittens. On Friday Oct 31, 2014 I purchased 5 cans of Blue Wilderness kitten food from PetCo. I am writing this review on Wednesday November 5th. Since my purchase, the kittens have consumed a total of two and a half cans of the wet kitty food (half can mixed with dry food different brand in PM). This morning I noticed a single drop of blood on the ground. Closer exam confirmed blood with mucous. Saw kitten go the bathroom and what ran out of his backside shocked me. A tan, loose substance with blood in it.

Immediately I called the vet, brought kitten and stool sample. Vet confirmed stool was without parasite and prescribed an antibiotic for a possible stomach infection. Upon getting home, I feed the kittens (fortunately NOT BB) and both ran to bathroom after eating. Now I saw my other kitten with the same stool, no blood. Grabbed that stool, returned to vet for exam. Again sample without parasite. Speaking with the vet they asked about diet and whether I had changed their diet. I thought nothing of the different brand of food, but mentioned that both kittens have had excessive thirst over the past few days.....I mean they just keep drinking water.

After my two trips to the vet today, and two traumatized kittens, It occurred to me that maybe I should google this new brand of food. What popped up on google MORTIFIED me. All of these reviews mention exactly what is happening with my kittens, thirst, diarrhea, bloody stool. After 2 1/2 cans shared by the kittens. Good grief! What could possibly be in this food??? Everyone, please be aware of the potential problems with this brand. I feel just awful, like I poisoned my kittens. Why is this brand allowed to continue selling this? I spent $125 at the vet today, but finding out that the cause is this cat food is worth every penny. And PetCo is going to hear about this tomorrow. Shame on anyone involved with this food.

The phone number on their bags and website just rings and there is no way I found to speak to anyone. I also sent emails. Over a week later I did get a hold of someone who could not offer any information on the safety of Rosemary. For a company that seems to now be spending so much on advertising, one would hope they would be as eager to offer decent customer support. It is no wonder discerning stores like Pet Food Express are pulling Blue from their inventory. I returned my last bag. The fact that they also didn't offer any perks for non profit pet charities doesn't help much either, but we were willing to pay top dollar for the best food that our dogs would eat. We have switched to Natural Balance (very rescue friendly) and 1st Mate (grain free and no rosemary extract).

After 1 year, I gradually switched to Blue Buffalo dog food as I saw an ad on TV promoting the benefits of this type of food. Izzy begin to cough up in the evening after we went to bed. Every morning I found a pile of regurgitated dog food. I thought she just was getting into something outside or from one of her doggy toys. I took all her toys away. Her vomiting continued and then she began having butt rubbing on the floor. I took her to the vet, who said she had rectal glands clogged up. We medicated her for this. It seemed to help some, but not completely.

The last days of her life were vomiting, constantly needing to go out and pee but she wouldn't pee much. We took her to the vet again, who put her on IV and said that her kidneys were shutting down. She had to stay overnight. I was called that night to come down as she was not going to make it. She passed away in my lap and now is in a better place with no more suffering. I am heartbroken and have lost my best friend. Our 4 year old black lab has eaten blue buffalo her entire life without issues. Two weeks ago we purchased a new bag at petsmart and our Hurley was hesitant to eat it (& she's a hefty eater). She finally gave in and ate about four/five servings of food. Over the next week she began pooping mucousy muck, spinning her bottom on the carpet, drinking an extreme amount of water, wheezing & dry heaving and having accidents on the carpet (which hasn't happened in yrs)!! I took her to the vet last Monday and our vet found nothing and said it was a gastrointestinal upset. He told me that if she didn't feel better to bring her back in a week for more tests. Well she felt better for about 3 days but still had an aversion to the blue buffalo, eating only small amounts here and there. Thinking she basically had a stomach ache we continued to try and get her to eat BB.

When she finally gave in and ate she again started with all the symptoms above and then became lethargic and would barely move. In fact we took her for a walk and had to carry her home. :( At this point we decided to rush her back to the vet. As we were making the necessary calls Hurley stopped breathing and passed away. The vet attributes her death to some sort of toxicity. I have to say that everything was fine until this last batch of BB which is what persuaded me to look for recall info. I'm absolutely mortified to see so many pets with her symptoms! I am extremely upset that BB is putting out a product claiming it to be superior when it fact it's killing our pets. There is a definite cause for concern and action! BB needs to take a hard and thorough look at what's changed with their food and correct whatever is causing the illness and death!!

Within a week my pom started w/ diarrhea then bloody diarrhea. No money for a vet and talked w/ a rep from BB at Petsmart said that I should switch to BB small breed lamb. I did so and she got better. My Pom is 4 yrs old and it has me concerned. I am now trying to introduce her to a grain free Petsmart brand Simply Nourish. I don't like the idea that something could be formulated to keep you locked into one specific brand.

This summer one of Pugs got very sick, head ticks, and vomiting, and diarrhea. We waited till the morning called our vet and took him in. They suggested we bring him to an Emergency Animal Hospital in the area. After 4 days of treatment going from Emergency vets to Neurologist and back, our Pug was put to sleep. This cost was over 5 thousand dollars. Early Sept. we took a trip Wa state to visit our oldest daughter and family, and we took our other pug. After two weeks there our second pug became ill, could not walk, could not keep his balance, had eye ticks (eyes twitching) vomiting and diarrhea.

We immediately took him to a vet and he was treated by a vet who specialized in senior dogs (our pug was 11 years old). She treated him for the possibility of a middle ear infection, the diarrhea, and gave us an appetite enhancer. We put him on boiled rice and boiled chicken. After a week and a half he began eating walked better but still unstable and he looked like he had a stroke, his head fell tilted to the left. We also were informed he had crystals in his urine which can affect the brain. We now believe that our other pug that was put to sleep and suffered from similar condition and this pug were both sickened because of Blue Buffalo Senior food.

Last year, my now 9 year old Pug Suzie had 10 bladder stones surgically removed. The veterinarian sold me a certain brand of dog food meant to prevent urinary tract infections and bladder stones that had grain in it. After researching on the web, I changed Suzie's diet to certain top rated grain-free dry dog food. When we moved, it was difficult to find the brand we started with, so a couple of months ago, we switched to BB Wilderness Salmon Diet. Every day Suzie wolfed down the BB food, barely chewing it. It seemed to be the best food she had ever eaten by her reaction.

When I recently purchased a second bag of the same, Suzie suddenly turned her nose up to the food when she came to her dish to eat. She would sniff the food a lot and hesitantly eat one mouthful, then walk away. This is highly unusual for a Pug that will eat anything and acts as if she were starving all the time. With much coaxing she would come back and very slowly eat the food. Each day she took longer and longer to want to eat the food. The day before she was going to have surgery to have two cancerous skin tumors removed, she refused to eat her breakfast at all, so I worried she might have a tumor in her stomach.

The doctor said Suzie's appetite was excellent 24 hours after the surgery and when the hospital kept her one extra day for observation, Suzie kept voraciously eating anything they gave her. Suzie came home and again when I offered the BB Wilderness Salmon, she picked at it and walked away, coming back to eat slowly when we begged and coaxed her. Today she ate one mouthful of food and then refused to eat anymore at all. I called the BB company and asked if they were getting a lot of complaints about their food after I read the comments on this website. They said no and suggested I exchange the opened bag for a new one where I had purchase it, being careful the expiration date was different so I wouldn't get food from the same batch. I also chose a different flavor to see if my dog would eat it with more gusto.

The instant I put Suzie's bowl down with the BB Duck flavor, she ran over, sniffed it to see if it was the same old food, and very excitedly wolfed down the Duck diet. There must have been something wrong with the Salmon diet food that Suzie detected by smell that disgusted her. I could not see or smell anything wrong with it, but thought it might have been tainted by rodents at the factory. Just a guess.

I have fed Bella, my 5 year old Yellow Lab, Blue Buffalo Life Protection Chicken & Rice Formula for the last 3 years without incident. The last bag purchased in September has me suspecting something is wrong with her food. At first, when she began having terrible gas, I never connected it with the food. Then, she began having bouts of terrible mucus filled diarrhea along with vomiting. Her energy level was completely down and she seemed somewhat depressed (I don't know if dogs get depressed). Initially I was figured she either got a little bug or ate some grass.

To ease her stomach, I gave her white rice and boiled chicken. Within a few days her vomiting and diarrhea cleared up and she seemed to be a little bit happier. I switched her back to her food and the symptoms returned with a vengeance. At that point, I knew something had to be wrong with the food. So I went online and found these reports. Now, I don't know if all of these are genuine, as some claim. But I do know what is happening to my baby. I went to the pet store that I purchased the food to ask for another brand until I could cook a big batch of homemade food for her. I discussed the recent happening and he mentioned that there was a voluntary recall only told to distributors. HOWEVER, I called Blue and they denied this. Perhaps the well intentioned kid saw something about the 2010 recall, I don't know.

What I do know is this. My dog was severely sick. Removal of Blue cleared her symptoms. I'm tempted to take her in to the vet to see if blood results come back normal and no permanent damage has been done. Blue is sending me a claim form which I will fill out in the hopes that whatever is wrong will be found. Other people also need to send them their information in order for a real investigation to be done. I still have the food and the bag. I ask that those of you who are posting or searching for answers do the same. PLEASE take the time to contact Blue and let's make a difference now to hopefully keep others from getting sick.

Anyway, I always mix yogurt, beans, peas or carrots, a little "wet" food and some dry Blue Buffalo. This time for the first time I mixed a tablespoon of the Blue Buffalo wet food.

This morning my beagle was extremely sick, having vomited all over the floor. Later that morning he had a bad case of diarrhea. Our second puppy (mini schnoodle) is just new to the family, has been with us about a month. We noticed our Bully (10 mos) was having frequent loose stools and sometimes worse than others but attributed it to him sniffing and eating something he wasn't supposed to as puppies sometimes do. The schnoodle transitioned to BB puppy food fine. This last bag (the largest) we bought at Petco three weeks ago has caused both dogs to vomit immediately after eating the first batch. My Bully began wheezing and dry heaving and vomiting a yellowish white foam for a day straight.

The schnoodle has unlearned all of his crate training because he pees and poops uncontrollably. His stools are mucousy and runny. My Bully's are the same. I kept telling my husband that it had to be the food! He was not convinced until I found this site. BB is killing animals and may have ruined ours. My Bully has a knot that feels like a tumor that just randomly appeared in the last week. We are stopping this food immediately! We'll do rice and chicken until their tummies settle. Hopefully that works. I truly feel bad for all who've lost animals to this obvious negligence. I hope that my dogs survive this.

As soon as I brought it home and gave it to him he chowed down and acted like he loved it. The bag recommends only giving him 1/2 cup a day since he is only 5-10 lbs. What's odd though is he acted like he was starving every time I went to give him a scoop, and would barely let me even get it out of my hand so I've been giving him just a little bit more the past couple days and this morning I woke up to a couple piles of watery mucous looking poop, almost like a tan-clear color.

He's not potty trained yet so there was some normal piles than you could see a pile where it was starting to turn watery than a pile where it was ALL mucous. Dale is a full blood pug and I know they have allergies real bad so at first that's what I thought until I read these reviews. It looks like it's probably the food itself, not just an allergy to it. He won't eat or drink now and is super lazy and won't even follow me around or try to chew on my shoes (he's in that stage). I am pissed at this point. I was told at PetSmart BB is a good all natural food for small dogs and the girl even said she has a Pomeranian that absolutely loves it. I guess it's my own fault for not doing any research until now. I just trusted the store that has this crap on its shelves.

I do a TON of rescue work and this is totally my go to food. I have NEVER had an issue with any of the different formulas I have tried. I was surprised to see so many negative reviews on here, but when I read them, it suddenly made sense. I've seen tons of people complaining about almost the exact same thing. At 1st they start off with the puppy food which is chicken and rice and the puppy does really well. But when the dog reaches a year old, or a year and a half they swap to adult food, SALMON adult food. No wonder they have problems! They got the puppy's system really settled onto chicken, chicken and more chicken, then suddenly throw a ton of salmon at him. They are already changing the formula a bit going from puppy to adult, why would you also swap what meat protein they are eating at the exact same time?

Dogs (and cats) are well known for developing sensitivities or even outright allergies to different meat proteins, that's why they make LID food to begin with! Knowing that, if you fed nothing but chicken as a puppy, why would you suddenly swap it completely when you transition to adult food? It's not like they don't make the exact same thing as an adult formula too.....

I'm greatly concerned that I can find no posts or internet info on contemporary actions by Blue Buffalo, that would address what seem to be numerous and common complaints. The only recall addressed (that I've been able to find) was one concerning an excess of Vitamin D in three of Blue Buffalo's formulas back in 2010. There seems to be a weighty preponderance of anecdotal evidence amassing that there may be a more current issue to be addressed.

We've been feeding our adopted Maltese mix BB's Natural Chicken & Brown Rice for Small Breed Adults for about two years. She has always been enthusiastic at mealtime, but has seemed a little hesitant at the most recent 6 pound bag, thus the impetus for my online research. She hasn't manifest any of the urinary or stool issues described, but since a number of the complaints here mention her type of food, it's cause for concern, and Blue's apparent silence only amplifies my concern.

The bag label purports to be "Manufactured in the U.S.A.", but many of the posts here hint at recent change in BB's ownership. I don't want to overreact, but could they be outsourcing beyond their ability to adequately control quality? This brand's ads and prices give the expectation of a superior product, so their customer relations should be able to support that expectation; or expect to lose their brand integrity, no matter how polished or prolific their ads are.

I mixed it in so it was only 1/4 of the amount of food I was giving (quality dry foods). Within hours of eating the food with the BB mixed in, one of my cats started having issues, going in and out of the litter box repeatedly. Now I'm fasting her and hoping her system settles down soon since she only got the food for 2 days before I realized it was the cause. Nothing else had changed, she's a strictly indoor cat, and has no access to medicines, garbage, or chemicals because I'm extremely careful about that.

I'm calling my vet first thing in the morning to get her checked out. Hopefully, all will come back fine and she'll just need to have bland foods for a few days then back to her old diet. I'm definitely returning the food to the store, too! It's always a good idea to keep receipts for things like this, just in case. I'm also going to warn everyone I know about this food. We thought that our 1 yr old dog was coming down with a virus or something when she started vomiting bile and having mucousy diarrhea. She was on their Rice & Chicken Puppy food purchased from Fleet Farm (and has been on it since she was 7 weeks old). Two days of rice water to thicken the stools, several days of rice and chicken diet to ease her stomach and then onto Blue Buffalo Basics (sensitive) Turkey & Potato Puppy to transition back to solids. The Basics sensitive variety is not available at Fleet Farm so I've gotten that at Pet Smart. After completing half the bag of Basics, I tried to transition her back onto the regular Puppy and she started getting sick again.

By this time, she had completed that original bag of Puppy BB that she seemed to be "sensitive or allergic" to, as I thought, so I got another bag of the Basics. The Basics sensitive line still worked okay for her. We've also used several canned BB foods lately that seemed to be okay. Recently, I bought another bag of Puppy BB Rice and Chicken, this time from Pet Smart, to try it again. This was before being made aware of this contamination situation (by a friend whose dog just died this week from a massive tumor growth that she links to BB). Assuming our dog might have sensitivities again, I mixed her foods off even slower, but once we got toward the 75/25 ratio with the regular Puppy chicken rice vs Basic sensitive turkey potato, she started getting loose stools again and has even had two peeing messes in the house which NEVER happens. She's on the Basics again and doing fine. All told, two BAD bags of Blue Buffalo Puppy Chicken and Rice, and two GOOD bags of Blue Buffalo Basics (Sensitive) Turkey and Potato for Puppies.

After reading the reviews, I'm quite certain it's not our dog...it's the food! Loose mucousy stools, vomiting bile, coughing, wheezing (vet verified it wasn't kennel cough), house peeing accidents. Thankfully, she didn't seem to have the lethargy or tumors that other dogs have had...at least not that we know of, yet. I'm disgusted by Blue's failure to acknowledge their mistake... They said their company that supplies chicken mislabeled their chicken so Blue wasn't aware that it had chicken-byproduct in it, but they very clearly stated that it would still be fine and wouldn't affect the health of the animals. Byproduct should be okay... something else is in here and that poor company became the scapegoat over a minor accident. Blue ended their relationship with that company since they had an error and accidentally got some byproduct in their chicken.

This past Saturday my beloved 3 year old Siamese Anna passed away. She began throwing up in the morning somewhere around 7 AM. She first emptied her stomach of the Blue Buffalo cat food she loved, ate all the time, and that we thought was healthy for our pets. She was diagnosed that day with pancreatitis and hepatic lipidosis. Her glucose level was 300. She was sick every 5 to 10 minutes at first with increasing frequency until it was green foam - filled with bile. She was hospitalized and I expected her to get better by Monday, but a little after 5 PM they called me to tell me she arrested when she attempted to vomit again.

After her passing I began to research to see how she could die so quickly and easily. Then I found article after article of pets developing pancreatitis from Blue Buffalo after the company was sold, and subpar ingredients such as carrageenan being purchased from China and added to our pets' food. I trusted Blue Buffalo. I am furious. When will our country do something to stop what I feel amounts to murder when we knowingly allow American companies to purchase and use products that are detrimental to our pets. They don't have a voice, and they rely on us to speak up for them.

I truly believe that if it wasn't for Blue Buffalo cat food, a product I specifically purchased because I believed it to be free of Chinese products, my Anna would be here today. You have no idea how personable she was, and how she looked at you with all the love of her heart shining through her eyes. She was just three years old. I've been feeding my two male Pomeranians Blue Buffalo puppy food since 8 weeks old. All was well. They are now approaching 1 1/2 years old. I couldn't get the usual food at the store so I grabbed a bag of BB small bread healthy weight. Both dogs refused the food at first. I figured they just needed time to adjust. Eventually they gave in and ate the food. Everything seemed normal for about a week, until I noticed some stool variations that were unusual. Again, I attributed this to the food change.

At about 2 weeks in, I noticed one of the Poms having a sort of neurological tremor in his lower jaw along with foaming salivation. I was immediately concerned and watched the dog carefully. The symptoms suddenly stopped. 2 1/2 weeks in I noticed the same dog had urinated an odd color. That same night he urinated what seemed to be pure blood. He was taken to the vet the next day for a urine analysis expecting to find some sort of bacterial infection. Worse than that his blood count was 50% less than a normal reading. His prostate was swollen and he was having obvious painful urination. The vet was perplexed by these symptoms.

When the UA came back negative I knew I had real trouble. This 1 1/2 year old puppy is now fighting for his life with some type of toxicity that was introduced to his system. This unknown toxin has created an anemia or auto immune problem. Teddy was 12 pounds on Monday and 11 pounds on Tuesday and losing blood on each urination. The vet put him on prednisone and stopped the blood within approx. 24 hours. I thought that would be a great turning point. The following day I ran another blood count at the vet and Teddy dropped another 5 points. The dog is seemingly losing the fight.

I come home tonight to find my other (had been) perfectly healthy Pom with a foaming saliva and lower jaw tremors. I INSTANTLY recognized the connection with the food which I had discounted earlier as the other dog was just fine. I truly believe that this food is toxic. What are the chances of two perfectly healthy dogs showing neurological issues in the same week? These dogs are from different litters. The vet also asked a lot of questions about food and toxicity. Now I come to this site to become horrified by the other very recent complaints about the same product.

This is disgraceful behavior of ** corporate policies that care only about profit. These people have NO regard for the lives of our animals. For God sake: They poison humans with GMO food and fluoride in our water and toothpaste and tell you it's good for you. I'm sick to my stomach at this point. These dogs are part of our family. They have been taken care of to the best of our ability and now we face losing them to a bad batch of Blue Buffalo. At this point I have taken the matter into my own hands and I am attempting to detox these dogs on my own. The vet said the next step for Teddy is a blood transfusion to keep him alive. I am already into this mess for $750.00 and rising.

Thank you to all the inept morons that work at Blue Buffalo. You have reduced your reputation to -0% with me and many others. I vow to expose your company for what it has done to my dogs and to all other dogs and families, including the pet store I bought this product in if they don't remove the food from the shelves tomorrow. I have 2 Labrador Retriever pups (5 months old) who have been on Blue Buffalo since I got them at 8 weeks. One of the pups has a more sensitive system than the other. He's had a few bouts of diarrhea and vomiting over the last 3 months. Vet checks have all been fine. My thought was maybe his treats weren't agreeing so I've switched those around. Not much change. The other pup, however, has had several bouts of gas since 8 weeks old and until today, no diarrhea or vomiting. (BTW, these issues never came up with our 9 year old lab who always ate blue buffalo life protection).

Yesterday, both pups developed horrible diarrhea (mucous-y & very runny). They seem fine otherwise. They eat BB Wilderness Puppy Chicken kibble and BB Wilderness Puppy Turkey & Chicken canned food (both grain free). They ALSO eat Bil*Jac Grain Free Soft Training Treats for Dogs. I'm trying to figure out which one is causing the problems. I'm going to report these incidents to both companies. I'm also going to call Petco and their vet to see if any other similar issues have been reported recently. As of today, I eliminated the BB canned food and the Bil*Jac treats. After reading others reports, I might eliminate the kibble too! Will report back once I know anything.

I opened a new bag of Blue Buffalo Small Breed Healthy Weight kibble last Monday, October 6th to feed my two shelties, age 9 and 6. On Tuesday morning, I found vomit in the 9 year old's crate. He also had bloody diarrhea. He refused to eat his breakfast and dinner. On Wednesday, the 6 year old sheltie had the same symptoms. Both were taken to the vet who found no parasites, bacteria or viral cause for their conditions. They are on medication for nausea and diarrhea for 7 days. Both are on a bland diet of chicken and rice until their symptoms are gone. The vet thinks they ingested contaminated food. A younger sheltie in the house eats a different Blue Buffalo kibble formula and he has experienced no symptoms. I have called Blue Buffalo and left a message for them to call me. I will switch all three dog to a brand of kibble I can trust - either Purina or Iams, as I know they thoroughly test their ingredients and food in their own facilities.

I had been feeding my Cocker Spaniel and Yorkie Blue Buffalo Senior Chicken and Rice canned food along with Life Protection Formula Senior Dry Food for the past 3 years with no issues. In fact they both became much healthier, leaner, and their coats improved greatly within a month of starting them on Blue. I should add I was also employed by Blue for a year so I was very familiar with their products as well as their corporate arrogance. I continued to buy Blue after leaving the company because I felt it was by far the highest quality product available. Approximately 6 weeks ago both of my babies started acting lethargic and both had terrible gas with explosive diarrhea and vomiting. I fed them a diet of chicken breasts and white rice for a little over a week and they were back to normal with solid stools and normal energy. I put them back on Blue and within 3 days they were having diarrhea and were both vomiting again.

I am done with Blue. I don't know if they changed their formula or decided to cheapen their ingredients to make more profit, their new manufacturing facility or what, but something changed dramatically. In the past when informed of ill pets, the message was clear that it was "something else" causing it such as pet parents feeding their pets unhealthy snacks in-between meals and the complaint was blown off. I have seen firsthand the effect Blue has had on my babies and there is no doubt it is due to the food. They need to investigate this and not ignore it.

I purchased two 30 lbs. bags of life protection formula large breed puppy food from PetSmart. He has been on the food for almost a month now. He has diarrhea, horrible gas, stomach rumbling, growling, and watery goopy eyes. It has been hard getting him to even eat the food. I took him to the vet. The first thing she asked was what food we were feeding him. She confirmed my suspicions, it was his food. I thought I was paying top price for top quality, I guess I was wrong this time. I came to this site because my mother's friend's dogs had become sick and after talking with her vet, they decided Blue Buffalo was the cause. Knowing that we use Blue Buffalo (Healthy Weight Chicken and Rice) she was concerned for our pup and wanted me to do some research, which brought me here. After reading many of these reviews, and knowing that people mainly write reviews when something has gone wrong, I thought I should write a positive one since we have not had any issues. We have been feeding our three year old mutt, Dottie, Blue Buffalo Life Protection Formula (chicken and rice) since she was around 6 months old with no issues. She does not love the small, black Life Protection bits, and often leaves several of them on the floor outside of her bowl, but what kid eats all of their veggies all the time? The only times she has been sick over the past few years, we could trace it back to eating garbage off the street (city life can be tough sometimes), cat food, or our friend's dog's food while we were on vacation. Every dog is different, and my heart goes out to those of you who have sick animals, but Blue Buffalo has worked just fine for us.

Recently added to this list, watery goopy eyes, foamy mouth or drooling and lethargy. Thought they may have gotten into something or contracted a new virus but was talking to a friend who feeds his dog exact same food. He said his dog has had more gas than normal, acting like he doesn't feel well and had recently had seizures!

I went online to see if there was anyone who faced same situation and was shocked and saddened because this food is not cheap and I thought I was feeding my babies a better food for their age. All was well with the world. My American bulldog is now 1 and it was time to switch her over to adult food. Since I was told Blue Buffalo was the better food over Purina dog chow, I decided to switch all dogs to Blue Buffalo chicken flavor dry kibble. Big mistake. All three of my dogs had a severe case of diarrhea within a couple of feelings and got worse as the days went on. I was told that sometimes dogs need time to adjust (I didn't switch them cold turkey, I gradually changed the food) and to try another week or so.

Well I started seeing blood in their stool and had enough. My Maltese has already had pancreatitis this year and I was not chancing that again. My dogs can eat anything. One of my dogs has eaten dry wall when I wasn't looking and it did him no harm. But a single bag of Blue Buffalo that is supposed to be great for them has caused them so much discomfort that my dogs are pretty much lifeless. I will NEVER buy this brand of food or treats again. I have read so many complaints about the same thing and I think it's time this brand addresses the issue or comes off the shelves. I'm very disappointed. I took the Blue challenge and it failed! After 48 hours, our Lab mix developed a severe case of diarrhea. Since the only thing new that changed was the food, we immediately changed back to the Nature's Recipe and lo and behold the diarrhea was gone. I attempted to return the unused amount of food to PetSmart without any luck because I didn't have the bag. I emailed Blue Buffalo and they advised that they don't provide product refunds. So much for standing behind your product. I did some checking on the internet and found numerous posts from people who encountered the same problem with this food. I purchase various flavors and yes, sometimes if I give them Wilderness their stools are not as solid as on the Life Protection Formulas. I hope that Blue food is not responsible for all the sick dogs. I read these reviews and I do not think that you can blame food for everything (seizures or intestinal blockage, etc.) I mean just like humans, dogs unfortunately get sick. It's not necessarily because of the food you are feeding them. I have to believe that if ALL these dogs were getting sick because of the food, the FDA would get involved and there would be a recall, just like Natural Balance, Purina, Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Diamond, EVO, California Natural, Nutro, etc.

I follow the recalls and one of the reasons I only feed Blue food is because all these other brands seem to be getting recalled every other year. Acana and Orijen are great - but they've been recalled too. Maybe the Wilderness food is too rich for some dogs or maybe dogs that are used to eating Pedigree and Eukanuba can't transition to a food with a lot of meat and no corn or wheat. Who knows. But I cannot believe (and I pray I am right) that if food caused ALL THESE ILLNESSES, the food would have been recalled.

We just had to take our 5 year old black lab to the vet, because she had an episode of explosive, uncontrollable diarrhea, followed by bloody stools the next morning. They determined that the problem was Clostridium. As a senior undergraduate, majoring in biology and minoring in both animal science and microbiology, I just HAD to do a bit of reading about her diagnosis. We have been feeding her Blue Buffalo Wilderness (Salmon flavor) for over a year now without any interruptions, or major complaints. However, upon reading about the possible origins of this type of illness, I was quickly able to narrow down the potential source of transmission for our girl. We are very careful about keeping her surroundings healthy, and it had even been several days since we had last been to the dog park before this all happened.

It seems that her food was the only possible source in our case, simply because the other options would not have been applied within a reasonable time frame surrounding this infection's incubation period. I am especially concerned after reading several other reviews, about dogs that have experienced similar symptoms. Our pet store is very understanding, and will replace any bag of pet food if you buy it from them and have a problem. However, that doesn't seem very fair when the contamination would have occurred before the product reached their shelves. Please look into this potential contamination issue, and address your customers' concerns promptly, and responsibly. That $200 vet bill really did not belong in this struggling student's budget this month. Thank you.

My husband and I were buying Natural Balance for about 2 years, but switched to Blue Buffalo one month ago after hearing how great it is on TV (big mistake). Yesterday around 6am my dog started vomiting while laying on his bed. He stood up and vomited again, then walked a few feet and vomited again. Right after that he collapsed and laid there lifeless for a few seconds. He then lifted his head and just laid there alert. This was the most terrifying thing I have ever experienced. My dog is my baby. I noticed he also pooped while laying down.

I called the emergency vet freaking out crying uncontrollably while telling them what happened and took him right in. I am still waiting on his superchem blood work. The physical exam was good. The vet was puzzled, and then I told her that we did switch his food to BB and she looked at me with a concerned expression. She said that the owner of BB also invented vitamin water. The ingredients of the food are not based on science, at all. She said that most of the expensive food is over supplemented. She recommended Science Diet, Iams, and Royal Canin. I left my dog at the vet for most of the day for observation. He did fine so I picked him up that afternoon and brought him home. I have been giving him cans of I/D and he's doing great. My dog has NEVER gotten sick like this. The only thing different was the dog food BB. I will NOT give him the rest of the BB. It will go in the garbage. I hope he'll be okay from here on out.

In the "Blue Buffalo Savory Seafood Stew" I saw a little blue something in the food as I was mixing it with the supplements. I pulled it out, washed it off and unrolled it. It looked to be a piece of blue rubber. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it came from an inspector's glove. It was about an inch long.

I had to look through each of the cat's food to make sure there wasn't anything else in there before I gave it to my cats. Being that this food was adult cat food I went the very next morning and purchased her Blue Buffalo's Blue Wilderness Kitten. She ate very healthily and has doubled in size in the last 4 weeks of her joining our family. About a week ago to our horror, our very playful sweet kitten started seizing, it was absolutely awful. Our vet (who is a great family friend for many years, was even a guest at my wedding and was almost my father-in-law's brother-in-law about 40 years ago) said we should ignore this one as she is so young and may have just been over excited. Yesterday my nieces were playing with her and a more violent seizure occurred to which we took her to the vet immediately.

Our vet said she seems very healthy and normal and didn't want to put the tiny thing through the stress of blood work and neuro tests until she has 2 more episodes. She has stopped eating as much as she used to and this morning to my immense horror had 5-7 seizures in the span of about 10 minutes. I took her to our vet again immediately to which he noticed her behavior was certainly different as she used to let out a loud meow and snap right back to her normal crazy and playful energetic self, today was not the case.

The food is the only thing we can attest to these sudden and terrifying episodes. The vet decided to monitor her for the remainder of the day to determine what tests are necessary as well as the recourse for the future. I can tell you after reading all these shocking reviews we will never by blue buffalo again nor will we ever recommend it. We will be putting our 2 australian cattle dogs on different food as well. Our American Bulldog mix just turned 9 years old and has been eating Eukanuba his entire life. Since he's getting older I thought it may be time to put him on a senior, more natural food diet and after talking to our local pet store we decided to go with Blue Buffalo.

In July we did a gradual switch, introducing him to the new food a little bit at a time mixed with his Eukanuba. At first he was extremely gassy, much more so than usual, but we figured he was probably just getting used to the new food. A couple weeks later we took him on a weekend trip and he threw up and acted sick and lethargic all weekend. About a week or so after that, he randomly started having accidents in the house. This is a dog who would literally rather hold it for 12+ hours than go out in the rain! He NEVER has accidents, and he didn't even seem guilty from it, it was almost like he was trying to tell us something.

The accidents continued off and on for the next couple weeks so I started making him boiled chicken and rice. We also took him to the vet and she gave an antibiotic and said we shouldn't worry about the new food and there was no need not to continue it since he was probably just getting used to it. At this point, we bought our second bag of BB.

Continuing with the chicken and rice, along with the antibiotics and some canned Science Diet w/d from the vet, he seemed to get a little better so we slowly introduced the BB back into his diet. He started having consistent diarrhea almost immediately and a week or so later when we fed him, he left half his food there, uninterested. He also would not drink water (I gave him broth from the boiled chicken to keep him hydrated). At this point I decided to Google "dog sick blue buffalo" and of course this website is the first thing that comes up!! I felt so guilty as it was my idea to switch his food when he had been perfectly healthy, and the poor guy was sick for almost 2 months! I immediately ordered him a bag of his normal Eukanuba and threw out almost an entire bag of BB.

As soon as we fed him the Eukanuba again he was instantly a new, happy dog. He's totally back to himself, perked up and drinking water again, it's like night and day. Never switching this guy's food again and definitely will warn other dog owners not to use Blue Buffalo!

We thought he was losing weight because of it being summer time and just wasn't eating as much. I noticed he too was now vomiting.

We had to put our dog down, she was too sick to save. We changed the cat food and he is no longer vomiting and is putting weight back on. I have sung the praises and recommended Blue to many people until now. On my recommendation, my sister began feeding both of her dogs Blue two months ago. One of her dogs is now having thyroid problems and the other is losing his hair. I told her to stop the food immediately.

I am only now able to write about this. It has been too painful. We put our sweet dog down on September 3rd. We noticed the color of the food changed a few months back, but didn't think much of it. I guess this is when they changed the formula. I don't know if this is a case of a good company getting too big or what. What I do know is I have a family missing our Ginny very much. We have a four-month-old Golden Retriever puppy named Chance. I used up a good portion of our phone data plan doing extensive research on the best dog foods for our new family member. After discussing it with a manager at a Petco I decided to buy "one of the best dog foods on the market". Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Life Protection Formula was not appealing to Chance from the very beginning. He picked at his food and seemed very reluctant to eat much at a time. His diarrhea was awful, runny and his foul gas has been almost unbearable.

The vet thought he may have had an intestinal infection such as giardia (which can be difficult to identify with a stool sample at times) but he gave us antibiotics that we administered for two weeks. During the course of the antibiotics I boiled rice and chicken and even gave Chance a bit of pumpkin occasionally. The only time his stool got fairly solid was when he stopped eating the Blue Buffalo. As soon as I put the Blue Buffalo back in his bowl and he started picking at the food again his watery, foul diarrhea was back in full force. Also, each time I put the dry food in his bowl he would sniff it, look at me, then walk away. I have had puppies before, even a Golden, and never did they continuously turn their noses up to the dog food. Chance would typically eat it in the evening after probably just getting too hungry.

Chance finished all of the antibiotics and still had the diarrhea all day long. Each time I gave him chicken and rice only his appetite would improve. The vet recommended a different medication for another five days. I gave him Panacur. Still his diarrhea persisted!!! On Sunday I sat down with my husband, grabbed my phone and typed in "Does Blue Buffalo cause diarrhea?" and immediately saw all of these similar concerns on this site. My husband threw the remainder of the very expensive Blue Buffalo in our trash can. I bought Kirkland Super Premium Puppy Food that day, poured it in his bowl and Chance gobbled it up... ALL two cups!!!! It took a few days but his stool is solid and we are so elated to see him feeling better.

My husband called Blue Buffalo headquarters and after first denying to have any knowledge of all the complaints, the woman finally said their "legal team is looking into it". I certainly hope a recall is done very soon. We will never take a chance on Blue Buffalo again.

Very disappointed in the blue buffalo brand. We recently just adopted a puppy and were set on feeding him the best. So we purchased blue and have had nothing but problems. We have been feeding him blue for 4 weeks and he has nothing but diarrhea. He has been to the vet 3 times and everything checks out; no worms, no parasites, normal temp. We couldn't figure it out until I started reading other consumer reviews. This far have spent over a grand on vet visits all due to feeding our puppy what we thought was "the best". Turns out blue buffalo did nothing but make him sick as a dog, literally. Very, very disappointed seeing as how blue should stand up to word that they have "quality" food. Will never advise anyone to feed their pet blue again.

He had his yearly exam 3 months ago and not a crystal or issue was found. My vet has informed me that it was her 3rd male tabby in just a couple of weeks that have been diagnosed the same and all were on diets of Blue Buffalo Freedom. I am not positive at this point that the food is the cause, but I did want to bring it to attention. My Cat now will be on a special Veterinarian prescribed diet. I am so happy that I found out the issue early enough to hopefully reverse the damage.

To give him some variety I bought Blue Wilderness Puppy with Red Meat and since I started to blend it with Merrick, the puppy started to throw up and not be interested in the food. Then gradually as the concentration of BB increased he started to have soft stools which then turned into projectile diarrhea with gas several times during the night. We had some friends visit us with their puppy and he tried the BB too. The next day he was also sick with the same symptoms. I am taking the BB bag back to Petco and going back to Merrick.

My 9 year-old German Shorthaired Pointer had been thru 2 bags of regular Blue and things appeared ok, but in retrospect she was munching on grass more than usual. Anyhow, I saw another type Blue that would suit her better (Senior formula, but still chicken flavor). She's not a picky eater, but when I opened the new bag on Sunday she would not touch it. Not alarmed because she tends to eat according to her energy expenditure. Monday came and she was fed again with the new stuff.

She still wouldn't touch it so knowing she didn't eat the day before, I poured bouillon over it which always works. She still would not touch it, and that alarmed me. I immediately went to a specialty pet store and requested a good food that was not sourced in China. They recommended a Canadian brand (apparently Canada is much stricter with pet food regulations). Brought it home and pup gobbled it up. My dog is a smart girl with a nose built for hunting. I truly believe something was off with that food and she knew it. I googled "dog won't eat Blue" and stumbled upon this disturbing collection of comments. I will never buy this brand again.

Both of my dogs have been eating Blue Buffalo food only for a long time. I chose it because of the ingredients and because it is supposedly best on the market. The last purchase turned out to be this disaster. Both of my dogs got severe diarrhea. Obviously of bacterial nature. Lasted 3 days. I eventually nursed them back by fasting them, then giving them rice water, then just rice, then rice with chicken. They livened up. Then last night I tried to go back on the food and mixed it with rice. This morning both of the dogs have the same type of diarrhea like before and are lethargic and weak again. Rice is on the stove again. At first I thought they ate something rotten on the street or something that my dog stashes away. But now I know for sure it's the food. It made me look up possible recalls, and I found this. It seems all of the dogs got sick around the same time as my dogs. I am throwing away the rest of the cans that I have and probably will just cook for them for awhile. Poor babies.

Not even sure how to begin. In memory of my beloved George whom we had to put down on September 4, 2014 @ 10:55 pm. Hearing my daughter crying and trying to pull her hair out, cried out it was her fault our first family dog died, her reason... it was her idea to switch George's food to Blue Buffalo. George never liked it... hardly ate it. That should have been the only clue I needed. But I couldn't afford to toss $50 out the trash... that was our budget for his food. Six weeks after he was started on Blue brand he was diagnosed with tumor in his spleen that turned out to be cancer which had spread to his liver.

My kids begged me to write and tell others and hopefully this would spare a family from losing a family pet. I can only state facts: George had a tremendous appetite for the 3+ years we had him and yet would go the whole day and barely touch his bowl when filled with Blue Buffalo Grain free adult beef recipe. We would make him chicken and rice to supplement. Six weeks past before that bag would be finished. Our 3 1/2 year old Blue Pit was rushed to the vet for emergency surgery to remove a splenic tumor. Biopsy results would reveal it was cancer that had spread to his liver. Surgery gave us 12 last days to treasure what was left of George's time on earth with us. The timing could just be a coincidence, maybe...not. We will never know. But if this story spares a life... I wished I would have researched before I bought that cursed dog food.

I started my 2-year-old German shepherd on Blue Buffalo Blue Wilderness Chicken Recipe a week ago, and for the last few days she has been developing diarrhea, which she had never had before. I looked up Blue Buffalo Reviews on Google and came across this site. After reading all the posts regarding the issues lately with this product I just threw out the whole bag of food. There goes $50 in dog food.

There obviously is something wrong with this brand lately from what I have read. I thought I was changing to a reputable brand of high quality dog food, but after this experience, I will not go back. I just returned from a local Pet Food Store specializing in quality pet food and picked up a bag of Acana. Very pricey, but they have never had a recall and they use high quality products in producing the dog food. Be careful in choosing some other high quality dog foods as they may be manufactured by Diamond, as some of these do not even disclose that they are manufactured by the same company that produces these lesser quality products.

It's too bad that Blue Buffalo does not come out with a statement. If this is an isolated incident in the manufacturing process, they are losing more customers by not making a statement so that their loyal customer base can remain. I for one will not go back.

First, on the reviewer that said most of these were bogus complaints from other companies, I disagree. I am glad your pet has no issues with the product. Our dog had been on Blue Buffalo for 2 years now with no issues, but we believe this last bag does have issues. He would not eat his whole bowl of food, but would eat half for a while now. He is 13 years old, so thought it was his age. He has had diarrhea now for a few days. I just switched to the rice and cooked chicken to see if it will help. He had a little blood in this last stool, so I am a little worried if the bland diet doesn't help. Of course, this could be something happening to him physically, we still need to check out, but the coincidence is pretty overwhelming. I need to check what is a good dog food for older dogs and not harsh on their stomachs and intestines.

I put him down on the floor and he lost balance and banged into the wall. At first I thought he had a stroke. The vet told me first to put some honey on his tongue. I did that and he profusely started throwing up the food. I took him to the vet, he vomited in the elevator and three more times at the vet, all Blue food.

The vet stated his blood sugar kept dropping. He was given Glucose through IV. The vet thought that maybe he had a mass in his abdomen or a tumor on his pancreas. This did not make any sense because he has never had to see the vet for any kind of an ailment. He was only 9 years old. I went to the Vet to see him at 4:45. When I arrived he had already passed. I think this is from the food because two of my other dogs threw up as well. Bogey was the first of the three to eat the food and ate the most of the three.

I switched to Blue Buffalo dog food about a month and a half ago. 2400 in vet bill so far, it is the biggest regret for me. My poor 5 year old Maltese is suffering from liver failure, jaundice, lethargy, not eating........ She spent five nights in the hospital, jaundiced and forever undergoing tests to see what liver function she has left. Next step is a surgical procedure where she has to have a liver biopsy! She was a perfectly healthy dog prior to the switch.

One day ago I opened up a different new bag of Blue Buffalo for our Lab puppy. He began experiencing diarrhea. Searching for a cause of my poor dog's liver failure, we stumbled across this website. Once I showed my vet these posts she immediately place my dog on yet another medication thinking there is a good chance it could have been something in the dog food. I went to the pet store today and told them about the crap they were selling. They informed me that Blue Buffalo was recently purchased by the Mars company.

I know we can't prove anything, but it is awfully coincidental that these postings are happening to this many dogs. Can't help but think there has been a change with the integrity of the food they are processing. The FDA needs to regulate our dog food companies and stop allowing them to put the crap into it. Also, we know about the health risks from the chicken from China, so why are we still selling it in the USA or allowing it in our pet food? I saw the previous post about people being paid to write blogs about Blue Buffalo, I assure you that my dog is real and has some serious health issues. She is yellow from jaundice and suffering. That is her reality.

I purchased some dry and canned Blue Buffalo dog food for my 6-year-old Pit Bull. I specifically chose the "grain free" food because of its deemed quality and nutrition. After feeding my dog a half-and-half mixture of dry and canned food on Monday, on Tuesday I awoke to her vomiting foamy bile and experiencing explosive bloody diarrhea. The vomiting subsided when I began feeding her pumpkin and green beans (due to their bland, yet, fibrous composition - and yes, it's vet recommended) but the diarrhea continued.

Today, I took her to the vet and the diagnosis was Clostridium, a bacterial infection in the digestive tract. Mind you, my dog is the ONLY dog in the house, has NOT been in contact with any other dogs (e.g., dog park, PetSmart, etc.) and I ALWAYS go out with her for potty breaks to ensure she does not get into anything (call me an overprotective "parent" but I'd much rather be safe than sorry, especially when she's exposed to various things in our yard). After documenting symptoms, history and changes in diet, the vet is almost certain the introduction of Blue Buffalo is the culprit.

After returning from the vet's office I decided to do some research and found this very helpful page on consumer reviews. I see a pattern of symptoms related to Blue Buffalo from many of the posters - vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, lethargy, fever, etc.- and I am APPALLED that not only have I spent a lot of money on what I considered to be top-quality dog food and it made my dog SICK, but I'm also appalled that apparently nothing is being done to investigate why so many animals are suffering after consuming Blue Buffalo products.

Not only am I angry that this company claims to produce a quality product, when in fact it does NOT and causes health issues in the animals that consume it, but I am also heartbroken for so many pet owners who have experienced what I have (or even worse!). I am not one to use the words "always" and "never" because they imply such finite opinions, but it is with 100% confidence that I say I will NEVER buy any product from Blue Buffalo again.

Our 3 year old Yorkie has been eating Blue Buffalo for over 2 years. He is a healthy little guy and just had a comprehensive exam 7/15. I just bought a new bag of the Blue Buffalo small breed adult at Petco on 7/26. I recently opened the new bag in the last two weeks and last Sunday, August 24 started a week I will never forget!

Our dog started dry heaving on 8/24, and on 8/25 he was throwing up several times a day. We took him to our regular vet who said he was dehydrated and had a 103.3 fever and may have pancreatitis. We opted for fluids and bought a can of bland GI food and went home to monitor him. Our dog was fine after fluids and the bland food - 8/26, 8/27. He was eating, drinking, and pooping normal. We we started to re-introduce BB on 8/28, he could hardly eat the dry BB food and didn't finish all of it or left half chewed up granulars around his bowl (which he's never done before). Thursday evening he had explosive diarrhea but I thought it was because we moved him back to his regular food too quickly. Friday he was fine, until...Saturday morning at 2am I heard him dry heave, and at 5:30am he was vomiting and when I took him out, he had another diarrhea explosion.

I took him to his regular vet at 9am and he had another explosion in the parking lot, complete liquid! He was at the vet all day getting fluids and testing, and he tested positive for pancreatitis! By 7pm he was still vomiting even after being placed on anti-nausea meds and so we did x-rays to see if something was stuck in his gut.

My vet closed at 8pm so we had to transport our dog to an ER vet clinic. He had bloody, liquid diarrhea in the waiting room, omg! They kept him overnight to ensure 24 hours of fluid. He has now eaten small meatball-sized portions of bland food since 1pm today, 8/31. He's home now and seems to be on the mend, thank God! I hope he wakes up a new dog tomorrow as this has been a horrendous experience. I will continue with antibiotics and anti-nausea meds and bland food through the next day or so and I will never give him BB again. We are switching to Royal Canin Rx or Science Diet! While at the vet searching for answers I came across all of these negative reviews of Blue Buffalo and what it's doing to our beloved pets. This isn't right and I hope for a recall or some type of answers. I will be returning my bag of food to Petco tomorrow!

Suddenly, she stopped liking it. Never dreaming anything could be wrong with her food, I started hand feeding the wet to her. She would not eat the dry no matter what I did to try to make her eat. I kept wondering why she was acting this way over her food. During this time, I noticed her stools were hard and she was urinating large amounts. Four days ago she started to vomit and when nothing was left to throw up, large amounts of slimy, yellow foam gagged her. Then nasty diarrhea started. Not one minute did I think her illness was due to BB.

But while at the Vet, he asked about her diet. I was proud to say, Blue Buffalo!!! The Vet's nose wrinkled and he questioned the current quality and origin of contents being used and thought I should consider changing once we are able to get her healthy. We have four cats, all males and two are 5 1/2 and are littermates. The other two just turned a year old (August) and are not littermates but from same rescue. I keep hearing that many of the more popular and common brands of wet and dry cat food (found at grocery stores) are made up of by product and not always the best quality since to us, they are not just "pets", they are my "kids". We had been getting Blue Buffalo and two other quality brands for them from pet stores since we can't find these foods at the grocery store. Last August, my husband was laid off from his job, so we ended up switching to the cheapest brand of the quality food (Performatrin Ultra) and there were no problems with our cats when we changed foods.

We continued to get the Blue Buffalo dry (the Adult Indoor Health, weight management, hairball control, odor control - chicken and brown rice recipe). This is when we only had the two older cats, who were 4 1/2 then. We adopted the kittens from a rescue last November when they were between 3 and 4 months old and had them on kitten food (2 wet meals; 1 dry per day). The other two also get homemade wet in the mornings (boiled chicken, peas, baby clams), dry food for lunch and wet canned cat food for dinner. Earlier this summer, the two younger cats, about 10 months old, decided they like the adult cat food, so once we were out, they had the same thing as the two older boys. The homemade boiled chicken, peas, baby clams for breakfast, dry (Blue Buffalo, brand mentioned above) for lunch and Performatrin Ultra for dinner.

When my husband finally got another job at the end of July this year (2014), I went to Petco on 8/11/14 to get them a bunch of the cans of Blue Buffalo (three different flavors which are all chicken and turkey). I still had the other brand left, but added the Blue Buffalo with it until that can was finished. Two days later I noticed one of the 5 year old cats didn't have his normal appetite and was very picky, which is so unlike him. I took him to the vet on 8/14/14 and they couldn't find anything wrong. The next day I noticed diarrhea in the litter boxes and had to watch. It was him. He had it multiple times, including outside the litter box. That night, I noticed it was mixed with blood. Back to vet the very next morning, 8/16/14. No fever, bloodwork was fine, had xrays done and they looked fine.

He was given sup-q fluids and a shot of something for vomiting and diarrhea and we were sent home with antibiotics and three cans of a bland (for digestive health) prescription food. I only gave him that and he gobbled it down and wanted more. He seemed to be on the mend. When that food was gone, I was told I could switch him back to his normal food, canned Buffalo Blue, which I did. He wouldn't touch the turkey flavor and reluctantly ate the chicken. A few days later, our other five year old had vomited multiple times in the basement and I noticed diarrhea in the litter boxes again. After observing, it was the one who was currently vomiting that also had diarrhea. He refused to eat, had him in our room with litter box and water by himself since he seemed to want to hide under our bed. We had grilled chicken breast that night so my husband cooked extra up for the cats.

I cut one into very small pieces and put a tablespoon amount in his dish, which he finally ate. The next morning in the litter box, again, more bloody diarrhea so off to the vet with him. That was 8/21/14. They felt maybe it was something he picked up from his brother and since he was eating, they gave him the same antibiotic and sent us home with three cans of the bland, digestive health, prescription food and his problem seemed to have cleared up. When finished with the prescription food, it was back to Blue Buffalo. None of them have had the dry since this started since I don't want to give them anything that will irritate their insides even more. Now the two youngest cats are having diarrhea but have not been as lethargic as the older two.

I'll probably be making another trip to our vet even though we've just spent $592.00 within a week, but I want my cats well again and am so afraid that this will cause lasting damage. I had been wondering what the heck was going on with our boys, so I did a search of pet food recalls, but didn't see any for Blue Buffalo. I then did an internet search of Blue Buffalo, vomiting, diarrhea in cats and found an article about it, written in 2013, and was directed to this page, only to find tons of entries about other pets having the exact same issues. I will be letting our vet know about this and will provide the links for them.

I have been feeding my Shelties Blue dog food for the last three years. About one year ago, my female sheltie started experiencing hot spots, ear infections and finally was diagnosed with a Thyroid condition. She has itchy patches of skin that looks like cradle cap. Once on thyroid meds, her energy improved, but the skin condition is terrible. She then started throwing up and having very soft stool after she had eaten. She would hardly touch her food unless I added meat to eat. She would eat the homemade chicken or beef and not touch the Blue dog food. Our male sheltie also started throwing up right after eating. This has happened many times in the last month.

I went to pet store and met a lady who told me to change dog food as Blue was not good. I came home a researched it online and was shocked to read about all the problems people have had with this food lately. They must have changed their ingredients or are outsourcing it to another company. I too have tried to call them and there is no answer. I am very upset about this as my female sheltie has suffered a lot and now I am worried about permanent damage to her major organs. I will be throwing out the two bags of Adult Chicken and Rice that I recently bought. I also bought the wilderness salmon mix. This is not acceptable and very disheartening to know that I have fed my two pets, on a daily basis, something that was not safe for consumption.

I have searched to see if this food was recalled, but I can't find anything. If anyone has had this issue or other issues with this brand, please post what you know. I have already spent a lot of money for vet visit, labs, meds, etc. I know that she did not 'get into' something around the house, so my only conclusion is that something was wrong with her dog food. If he only ate that stuff - what else could have killed him? I was recently made aware of an article in the Bloomberg Business week dated July 28th. I thought something was wrong with the first bag so I bought another and she still refuses to eat it. I tried to call the company at the ph# listed on the bag to see if maybe they changed the ingredients or something....but there was no answer, it just rang about 20 times then stopped & no answering machine to leave a message!? I have been dealing with one sick beloved Puggle for the past two weeks. I ended up in an emergency vet service hospital this past Sunday because she had violent diarrhea and vomiting. She would begin to pant heavily and head for the front door to go out. Sometimes she made it, sometimes not. This was the 2nd weekend experience. The first weekend was 8/17 and I thought she had gastro distress because I had caught her eating grass in our backyard. She was on a bland diet of rice, boiled chicken and broth from 8/18 to 8/21. I began weaning her on to Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken/rice on 8/21 evening meal. She was fully on her Blue Buffalo by 8/23 evening meal. At 4 am on 8/24 she begins panting and runs to the front door again.

The emergency vet took her temp - it was normal. She has had anal gland problems before and she checked them and she was fine even though she had started dragging her butt on the floor or grass outside. They gave her subcutaneous water to prevent dehydration, an anti-vomiting shot and an antibiotic to deal with the diarrhea. It was suggested I had a bad bag of dog food. I began researching online, found this website with similar stories and I am feeling horrible about what I have been feeding my pet. I have a fax into my regular vet and am awaiting what to do next. Office visit and reassessment of food for my pet. She is doing fine on rice, broth and boiled chicken so I do believe the Blue Buffalo is the guilty cause of her distress. Bad Blue Buffalo, BAD!!!!!

Took her to the vet and she was having heart problems and was able to almost fully recover after a week of heart meds and antibiotics. She ended up losing 20 pounds. In early Aug she had another episode with vomiting, labored bringing and coughing. We did not want to put her through testing due to her age but the vet suspected heart and kidney failure. We are treating with heart meds but she continues to cough. Last week the 13 yr lab woke up with panting and was walking into walls and disoriented. Due to their age they don't get into anything, mostly sleep. So I started to check out the food. I have recently changed food with hopes that one of the dogs won't have permanent damage.

We had our Boxer/Weimaraner cross on Blue Buffalo for over a year. She is now three. Over the last month and a half, we have had a seizure, vomiting, loose and bloody stools. She is usually such a happy and healthy dog. We went to the vet and her stomach issues were of course hard to diagnose. She was put on antibiotic and recommended a bland diet. She was fine on the bland diet and we thought the antibiotic worked. So we gave her her Blue Buffalo. The vomiting and diarrhea started again almost instantly. We have obviously pulled her off this food and switched brands and she's now back to her old self!

We wrote Blue Buffalo and they responded immediately. They were very kind... however...They denied having issues or a bad batch. I recommend all of us contact them and demand a recall. Something is very wrong. I don't want any more pets to get sick. I have heard they outsourced to China recently where they don't have the same guidelines.

Our Golden Retriever got sick after I started feeding him the Blue wilderness Beef flavored dog food. He became violently ill... started vomiting, had projectile diarrhea, blood in his urine and his stool. The first time this happened I took him to the vet about 4 weeks ago thinking he had eaten something strange (he's an inside dog, but we live in a rural area with wildlife in our yard). Spent just under $300 to treat him for an intestinal infection... unknown cause. Started feeding him the food again, within a week he had the same symptoms. Took him back to the Vet. The vet ask specifically if I was still feeding the Blue Wilderness. I said yes. I did not make the connection to the food until that moment.... which made me feel so bad about my choice of food for him.

The Vet's dog had the same reaction to the food and she told me to trash it so no other animal could get to it. I don't have the bag but I kept some of the food. I am tempted to get an outside lab to test it for unknown toxins. Someone told me after this last episode to check online to see if any recalls or complaints had been placed against this food and WOW I was stunned! Could not believe all the complaints against this dog food brand and I had fed it to my baby! I spent $60 for a bag of food then $600 to treat my dog from illness from eating it. He's a perfectly healthy dog with no health issues until I fed him this food.

I am happy to say that he is on the mend after this second scare and doing well after just a few days of medication and TLC. I'm hoping he did not suffer any serious side effects from this food. If you are reading this, please do not ever buy Blue Wilderness for your pet.

I have 2 dogs and 4 cats. Similar to the other stories that I have read, at first everything was fine and their vet approved of the food based on his exams during things like vaccines, etc., not having anything to do with any reaction to the food. Then as time went by and I did things like buy a different flavor or bag size there were numerous (yet subtle) issues. I mention 6 pets, and there were 6 different reactions. The oldest dog developed diarrhea, though not every day. The younger dog started to have a bright pink spot on his muzzle, which kept getting redder and then he started fussing with it. The oldest cat began throwing up a lot. The one eyed cat had oozing from his bad eye and my calico cutie was getting bald spots.

I worried. I asked the vet. I lost sleep. I pondered. I tried to make sure there wasn't anything left out for them to accidentally get into. Finally even though the vet naysay'd me (because he felt I was giving them very good food) I changed their food, because I couldn't think of anything else they all had in common (besides living in the same house). Almost immediately the problems began to lessen and finally went away. The vet still disagrees. I've changed vets.

She is now on different food and is back to normal. I am very angry that we spent so much on this food and there apparently is no quality control. It is very upsetting to spend so much on what we thought was good food, then had to spend over $200 in vet fees in meds and tests, just to find out that the food caused all this. I purchase an 11lb bag of Blue Wilderness dry cat food every six weeks for my two, 14 month old, inside cats. They have been eating this food for about 9 months without any issues until I bought my most current bag (Duck flavor) 3 weeks ago. I noticed an increase in vomiting shortly after purchasing this but didn't think much of it. They were only vomiting yellow fluid, barely any hair, unless they just ate they would vomit their food and yellow fluid. I thought maybe they had to adjust to the different flavor although that has never been a problem before.

Over the weeks the vomiting got more and more frequent, I thought maybe it was something I was leaving out so I would run through the apartment every morning before I left for work and every night before I went to bed and did not give them any treats of any kind to be sure these were not upsetting their stomach. I also never feed them human food, so it is not that. The vomiting persisted.

Finally, I came home from work for lunch last Thursday (9/14) and there were 4 pools of vomit on the kitchen floor and 2 in the living room (I was only gone for 3 hours). I cleaned it up, cats were sleeping and I went back to work. I get home at 5 PM, 3 more pools of vomit in the kitchen and 1 more near the bathroom. I noticed my male cat was not himself. He is very very playful, jumps all over me whenever I get home, and he didn't even move. All he wanted to do was lay in a corner and his eyes remained half-closed.

For the next several hours he howled and vomited every 30 minutes to an hour. I wasn't able to make it to my vet on time before they closed so I watched him closely and tried to wait it out until the morning. Any time he tried to eat or drink, he would throw up. After I took away his food, he regained some energy but I knew he couldn't go without eating, so I wanted to take him to get an X-ray for fear he may have swallowed something that was causing an obstruction. My male cat has a tendency to eat random things, especially pieces of plastic bags and hair ties. However, there was no obstruction.

They said it was gastroenteritis (inflamed intestines) and they couldn't tell me an exact cause. They gave him an antibiotic/steroid and I took him home, relieved. Now it has been 4 days and several hundred dollars since my vet visit, and not only is my male cat vomiting again but my female cat has begun vomiting yellow fluid as well and is laying in a corner incredibly lethargic tonight. I have absolutely no concern that she has swallowed anything unusual, she has never tried.

I started thinking, maybe it is the food? It is the only common denominator between the two cats. I've noticed they haven't ate as much in past weeks as they usually do and they have barely touched their food bowl in almost two days. Also, the vomiting started about the time I got this new bag of food. Just to test my theory, I tried to feed it to them by hand and they both ran away. Keep in mind, this has never happened. They love when I feed them bits of food by hand and have always loved blue buffalo.

After this rejection, I got online and started researching and I see other consumers reporting the same thing I am going through right now. I will be taking another cat to the vet tomorrow and throwing away this food immediately. I am hesitant to ever buy this brand again. Please submit a recall.

I would like to say that I work in a Veterinary Clinic and 98% of the urinary problems (including total blockage) with cats and dogs in our clinic are on a Blue Buffalo food. It is a very serious and even deadly situation when a cat (or dog) is blocked. Also the expense can be in the thousands if surgery is required to fix the problem. We are not a clinic that thinks all people should buy their food at our clinic--- there are other foods on the market that you can get at the local pet store. The bad thing about it is that once they have urinary problems they usually have to be on a special urinary diet for life-- so not only has this food created a large vet bill but now the animal needs to be on a more expensive urinary food.

Ok I should start from the beginning. I had a 6 year old leopard hound that had gotten a small wound on his right leg. I didn't think much about so I cleaned it and soaked it then put ointment on it for about two days then his whole leg swelled and he refused to walk on it so off to the vet. They told me he had the beginnings of heart disease so they put him on a diuretic. The swelling went away but he still refused to walk on it. I then did research for a low sodium dog food. Hills ideal balance had an ok rating so I started him on that and called the vet and told them the swelling went down but he still didn't want to walk on it. So they put him on an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic.

Then he started doing awesome. No more limp and was acting like the dog I knew again. But I still wanted him to have the best food so I went to dog food advisor and looked up foods that had a 5 star rating. Blue Buffalo ranked one of the best. So I said ok when he finishes the small bag of Hills I'll start him on that. He had now been on the antibiotic for 6 days and I stopped the anti-inflammatory because he was doing great. I gave him the Blue Buffalo but he didn't want to eat it so I figured he was just being picky because it was new so I mixed in rice and sometimes tuna if just rice didn't work. Then he started to seem lethargic again so I figured it must be because he wasn't eating all his food and then diarrhea. So I thought it must be the antibiotic.

Then on day 3 of the Blue Buffalo he ate in the morning and then threw up about three times and went and hid in his dog house. I couldn't get him to come out. I tried giving him food he refused to eat anything but was still drinking and every once in a while seemed to be having dry heaves. Then he just wanted to rest so I left him be for a couple hours then came back out to try and get him to eat. No food. He wouldn't eat anything. No rice, no cooked chicken, no biscuits but he was still drinking so I put his heart medicine in his water and didn't give him his antibiotics because I figured that was why he kept throwing up and had such a terribly upset stomach. I continued to try and get him to come out of his dog house but to no avail. He was still dry heaving and refused to move.

I had to work early the next morning so I figured I'd let him sleep and try and convince him to eat in the morning before work. When I came out in the morning he had passed. I had thought his heart must have been worse than we thought. So we started giving our other dog the rest of his bag of food because it was supposed to be so great. Now about 3 days of her having she started acting strange too so I started to research and found all these other dogs with the same symptoms. I just hope I'm not too late and I don't lose both my dogs because I was trying to give them the best. They really need to find out why their food is doing this and recall it.......

I had started reintroducing her regular Blue Buffalo that week and same thing started all over. After it was recommended that we feed just rice and chicken which helped. Turns out it is Blue Buffalo. I took my dog off the food. 3 days later and a hefty vet bill. Finally this morning my dog feels and acts soooo much better. No diarrhea, and well hydrated!! Now she is back on her food of Eukanuba & Science Diet's GI prescription and doing amazingly well.

    Reviewed Aug. 7, 2014

I had been feeding my Jack, Jack Russell, Blue Basics for several years. Chose to change to this food after he developed skin allergies. In March 2014 he suddenly started having seizures. He was 15 and my vet and I agreed due to his age we did not want to stress him out and cause another seizure so we did not do blood work. On July 19, 2014 he had a seizure which lasted over 2 hours and he had to be put down. The most horrible experience ever. One week to the day my other dog which is a Boxer and is 19 months old came up to me after eating and started having a seizure - never before had he done this. We spent well over $400.00 on blood work. Liver enzymes were elevated but the vitamin D level was normal. I cannot say for sure that the Blue had anything to do with this but after reading other posts and the elevated liver enzymes I believe it is the food. I have already changed his food to vet recommendation and pray this never happens again.
