On April 18, 2012, I purchased a bag of Blue Buffalo Weight Control Dog Food. I started blending my dog's old food with BB for about 5 days, and then transitioned to BB completely. Once we did that, our dog acted like she had mad dog disease. She would whip her head back and forth. We took her to the vet's after the 2nd day. Our vet told us to stop feeding her BB and go back to her old food. We did just that and the very next night, we had no issues. No BB for our dog ever again.

During the latter half of 2011, we transitioned our cairn terrier to Blue Buffalo Longevity Mature and he seemed to be doing okay until we bought a new bag of food for him in February. Shortly after starting the new food, he started vomiting, having diarrhea, so we took him to the vet's. The vet said it was probably just something he had eaten and gave him pills and some plain dog food. After three weeks, we moved him back to the Blue food and he got sick again, only this time he was straining really badly too. The vet gave him more pills, including worming pills, and things cleared up. The vet suspected that the food might be the issue but suggested we try one last time so we started the transition (maybe 30% Blue) and he got sick again, so back to pills, plain food etc., then finding a replacement. This process has taken three months and my dog has lost a significant amount of weight (approx. 35%) and is very lethargic. I'm really upset that my vet was not aware of the problems caused by Blue and that I have only found out about this now.

On April 23, 2012, my dog became very ill and started throwing up. I thought it was either something he ate at the local dog park or it was the scraps he retrieved from my 1-year-old's high chair. We brought him to the vet immediately, and he was treated for dehydration and had blood work done. He had a high level of LIPA, and the vet believed he had eaten something that was too rich for his system. He was put on 3 different medications and a diet of chicken and rice. Today, he seems much better, but I am so happy to read these other entries. So I do not put him back on the Blue Buffalo chicken dog food!

My 22 month old German shepherd has been on Blue Buffalo since he was a puppy. I had done much research prior to choosing Blue Buffalo as his primary source of food. We live in Canada but on a visit back from the USA, we purchased a new bag of Blue Buffalo from PetSmart in Michigan.

Immediately after feeding our dog kibble from the new bag, he had severe diarrhea that same evening that lasted over 5 days. I took him to our vet for his annual shots and asked about the diarrhea. Our dog weighed 73 lbs on the last vet visit. On this visit, he weighed only 65 lbs. Our vet could not find anything wrong with him. We resolved the diarrhea with a plain chicken and rice diet over a 4 day period. The moment we started to add Blue Buffalo to his chicken and rice diet, the poor guy's diarrhea started over again with a vengeance. We are now back to a bland chicken and rice diet and will be switching him over to another dog food.

I purchased a bag of Blue Buffalo dog food on March 28, and I started weaning my dog off the dog food he was on gradually and was adding the Blue Buffalo dog food to the food we had been feeding him. A few days ago, my dog vomited right after he ate; and what came out looked like white foam. I considered the dog food, but I thought that maybe he ate something outside.

Today, I emptied the bag of Blue Buffalo dog food into the bin where we keep the dog food, and I noticed what looked like mold in the bottom of the bag. When I examined the dog food more carefully, I found numerous large clumps of molded dog food, which had been in the bottom of the bag, and some of the food looked like it had a whitish coating. I purchased the dog food at Petco in Grants Pass, OR on March 28, 2012; and I returned it to the same store on April 20, 2012.

We bought Blue Dog Food, Natural Chicken and Brown Rice for small breeds for our two pure bred Pomeranians, Cinnamon and Midnight on March 23rd. Both of our dogs died on March 27th. This was the only food that they were eating and we always kept our dogs in our care. We contacted the company immediately as our dogs experienced vomiting and decreased bowel movements and we were prepared to either change their food or take them to a vet for assistance as the next best steps, but before we could get them to the vet, they both died quite suddenly together. This could not have been coincidental given that both of the dogs were in excellent health and one was 4 years old and the other only 5 months.

The company has asked us to send the full bag of food and a claim form. We sent a sample of the food as we are hoping that the complaint that we filed with the FDA will help in a more thorough investigation. No family should have to suffer the loss of one dog and certainly not two. We are clearly devastated. They have been less than responsive and we are currently waiting to hear from their "Legal Department" according to a Customer Service rep there. But then again that was several days ago. Unless they are handling an influx of these complaints (which I would not be surprised and would be even more upsetting), we have no reason to believe that more pets will not die as they seem to be taking this report very nonchalantly. Shame on Blue Foods.

We have 2 dogs, a 6 year old and 10 month old who have been fed Blue Buffalo with no problems until 2 weeks ago. We bought a new bag of the large breed puppy chicken and rice, and after the first meal, our 10 month old lab mix got violently ill. She has never had any type of adverse reaction to this food before, and has been eating it since we got her 6 months ago. She experienced vomiting and severe diarrhea. It was so bad, we had to take her in to the emergency vet (it was on a Sunday) to get her re-hydrated (she would not drink any water) and have a few injections to stop the diarrhea.

$300.00 later, we returned home and she was on a chicken and rice diet for a week. We started to re-introduce the Blue Buffalo (at this point, thinking that she ate something outside that made her sick) and she got sick again immediately. We took her in to the vet to be checked again, she was put on probiotics and back to the chicken and rice diet. The illness was absolutely caused by the Blue Buffalo, and both of our dogs are switching brands immediately. Reading the other posts about the exact same situation on this forum is sickening. Why isn't this widely known?

I have been feeding 8-year old Lab Blue Buffalo for the past year. He had bouts of stomach upset over the past year that he recovered from rapidly. We were not so lucky this time. He was violently ill, vomiting over 8 times in one night! We took him to the veterinarian and he was hospitalized for dehydration. No obstructions or diseases were found from the testing. That visit to the veterinarian cost me $650 which, as a single parent, is a major financial setback. I thought I was doing the right thing feeding my dog "quality" dog food.

We had an 8-year-old sheltie that died from aflatoxin poisoning the summer before last year due to the Eukanuba ("Natural Chicken & Brown Rice") dog food that we were feeding him. After toxicology reports and the FDA reconfirmed the tainted dog food, we went on the hunt for a new dog food for our other 2 shelties. All of our research lead us to the Blue Buffalo brand. We had hoped to get both of our remaining dogs on their grain-free Wilderness, but our older dog (9 years old at the time) couldn't tolerate the high protein levels, so we put him on non-grain free "Life Protection Formula" Chicken and Brown Rice. Once we were able to switch them over to the Blue Buffalo, they seemed to do well on it until recently.

In early February, we noticed that our 11-year-old sheltie, who is normally very healthy, began scratching and biting at his back hips and constantly licking his paws. After a couple of weeks of this incessant behavior (along with some other peculiar behaviors like eating grass, etc), I decided to take him to see his vet. According to his vet, he was definitely having an allergic reaction to "something" in his environment. His liver enzymes were also extremely elevated, as were other blood levels that indicated some type of autoimmune response. At that time, the vet put him on a short course of the steroid, prednisone, just to help stop his constant itching problem. Although the prednisone did stop the scratching and biting, it caused other problems for Bailey; and we had to take him off the medicine 3 days later.

Two weeks ago, I noticed that Bailey had started to lose the hair on the top of his nose; and within a couple of days, most of the hair next to his nose was gone. In doing some research on our own, we discovered that many people have been experiencing similar problems with their pets (cats and dogs), and it has been traced back to the Blue Buffalo food.

A breeder, whom we spoke to, told us that he thought he had heard that the Blue Buffalo Company had been sold at the end of last year. I could not find any information regarding the sale of the company, but both my husband and I did notice that BB's television advertising has really picked up since the beginning of the year and that they have come out with several new lines of both food and other items such as cat litter, etc. within that same time frame.

According to our vet (whom we took Bailey back to earlier this week for his nose problem), they are seeing "a lot of problems with both dogs and cats" in their office "that appear to be related to the Blue Buffalo pet food." She advised us to get our dogs off all Blue Buffalo food "as soon as possible." While at the vet's, we also spoke to several other pet owners in the waiting room with their pets, which were experiencing the very same problems--which was why they were at the vet's office. Nobody even suspected that it could be the expensive dog food they were feeding their pets.

We took the Blue Buffalo food (3 bags) we had just purchased in mid-March back to PetSmart, and they issued us a refund, no questions asked. We still had our receipt, but according to the manager, they will take back the food even if you no longer have the receipt. Apparently, we weren't the first to bring back the Blue Buffalo dog food.

My question is who is protecting the consumer? Why are these companies able to get away with this? These poor innocent pets and their owners appear to be victims of these large, greedy corporations which care for nothing but the almighty dollar!

Looking online and speaking with people from Pet Smart, we decided to try Blue. OMG! We were so wrong. He has had the worst gas and diarrhea ever, its like water. Needless to say, the bag of food that we paid over $50.00 for and haven't made it through half of the bag will be going in the garbage and we will be going back to Nutro. I pray everyone's pets will get well. Good luck to all.

My Yorkie-Poodle mix had been experiencing consistent diarrhea for about four days. When I didn't see any signs of improvement, I finally began getting concerned and took her to the vet. They completed all appropriate blood work and exams to rule out everything. They came back and asked me about her diet and I had explained she had been eating Blue Buffalo dog food. At that time, they shared with me that they have had multiple dogs come in recently who had been eating the same food and experienced similar problems including high calcium levels, vomiting and diarrhea. They did not have enough information to say that was the cause to my dog not feeling good, but they were concerned with her eating the food.

They also shared with me that the dogs with high calcium levels began eating different dog food and within a week, the calcium levels dropped back into normal range. She never really cared for dry dog food, but Blue Buffalo was the first dry dog food she would eat consistently and seemed to like. She did really well on her first bag so about two months ago, I bought her a second bag. That's when I began noticing changes in my dog with her digestive system including occasional vomiting and diarrhea. I then looked on the internet to see if others have experienced similar situations with their dog and this food.

Hundreds of complaints and concerns came up with all similar situations. How has this issue not been addressed with the maker or places like PetSmart that sells the food? Please note, I took my dog to Banfield pet hospital in PetSmart, the very place where they saw multiple incidences with dogs in their clinic yet they are still selling the food even if the vets did not recommend using. Please, please consider looking into this issue!

We have always fed our dog Blue Buffalo. He's been on it for about three years now and we have never had an issues until he ran out of food and we bought him a new bag. Literally one hour after feeding him the new bag of food, he had the most awful diarrhea. We had to take him out every couple hours. It wasn't normal diarrhea it was like water, no substance whatsoever like he didn't just eat three cups an hour prior. We were not sure the cause of this sudden illness of our perfectly healthy six-year old pit bull.

He drank water constantly, could hardly move. He was so sick. It wasn't until we got on the internet thinking maybe his food was bad that we came across complaints like the ones on this site. We immediately took him off the BB and gave him an entirely different brand. Right after switching, the day of switching foods, he was completely better. No diarrhea, no leaky watery eyes. He was back to his old self. I took the bag back to Petsmart today and they assured me it was not the food. **. They said Blue Buffalo is our best brand. Duh? That's why I bought it for my dog but somewhere along the way this food has become dangerous. Do not let anyone feed this to their pets! What a horrible experience.

I bought a big bag of Blue Buffalo dog food because Pet Goods said it was the best, no wheat or corn filler, which our Golden is allergic to. Our 15-year old cat, who normally does not show an interest in the dog's food, also ate it greedily. Within days, both animals, usually perfectly trained, began having terrible diarrhea and some vomiting. It took us a couple of days to realize that it was the food. The dog is recovering but our beloved cat is still very sick. How can this company be stopped?

I started buying the Blue brand for my golden retriever who is very allergic. He seemed to do very well on it and his fur was much healthier. Now on the second bag, I noticed my 16-year-old cat was eating it - he has never been interested in dry food before. Over the last week, my golden started vomiting daily and his stool has been runny. Now both the cat and the dog are the sickest I have ever seen. Their eyes are swollen, vomiting, lethargic and have diarrhea. They are both truly miserable and sick with the exact same symptoms as everyone else who has posted about this brand.

Taking dog obedience classes at Petsmart led me to discover Blue Buffalo's dog food nightmare! It is heavily advertised to be the healthiest, best, only-natural ingredients, salmon, chicken, no corn, etc. And oh, Blue Buffalo is placed in the front of the Petsmart Store! Of course, I want the best for my pets. Employees raved about its quality. So I bought a big bag of the BB Salmon, wanting to give my dogs the best and healthiest. I do know how to slowly transition my pets to a new food, and I did.

I have 3 dogs, 2 miniature healthy poodles (8 years, 3 years) and 1 large golden retriever/shepherd mix (15 months). The first problem that I noticed was Clay, my 8-year-old healthy male poodle, began to have bright, thick, yellow mucus coming out of the front corners of his normally bright eyes. Several times a day, I was cleaning this out.

The second was Clay, my healthy robust 8-year-old poodle, began vomiting repeatedly. All 3 dogs travel in my van each morning. We drive my 16-year-old to school that is 30 minutes away. Clay multi-vomited his new Blue Buffalo Salmon dog food up on the side my van, hanging his head out the window. This happened for 4 days.

Third was Romeo, my 3-year-old miniature poodle, was having diarrhea--yellow, loose mustard stools at 7am, 8am, 10am, 12pm, etc. excessively. I knew the vomiting and diarrhea both began when I started them on the BB Salmon dog food. (I now think of BB as Bad Bad dog food.) My oldest dog was eating grass and vomiting and slowly becoming more lethargic.

With 3 dogs becoming sick at the same time as the BB food was began, I knew it was the Blue Buffalo Salmon dog food that making them sick. So, I took it back and exchanged it for a different BB dog food that would be gentle on their stomach and not be problematic. I bought BB Lamb! Same thing happened! Lasting several days, Clay has thick mucus oozing from the corner of his eyes, and he's also vomiting out my car window. Romeo has diarrhea inside and outside. I now notice they are more lethargic. Not happy, my 1-year-old shepherd/retriever mix is lethargic, not feeling well, chewing grass, and vomiting.

I called my veterinarian that I've used for 25 years for help! He had me bring in my 3 dogs. He immediately figured out it was the dog food and examined them. He ran blood work on Clay and said we had caught it early and it had not affected his pancreas. He did say since Petsmart opened down the street several years ago, he has had several people and pets come into his office with problems as they begin to feed their dogs Blue Buffalo dog food. His staff was also aware of the problems with the BB dog food.

He told me to immediately get them off the BB and put them on Royal Canine gastrointestinal low-fat food. He said this is what he feeds his dogs, and he has had good results with his own dogs and dogs in his practice. He reassured me that it was also good for large and small dogs.

He gave Clay 1/4 famotidine tablets for nausea/vomiting. I thought I might need drops for Clay's yellow mucus coming from the inside corner of his eyes. He asked me to simply use a saline wash to clean them and to change dog foods and it would likely go away. I did, and it did! I changed to Royal Canine and all 3 dogs got well and energetic, playing together again.

Please, someone help do something to protect consumers and pets from Petsmart which is selling Blue Buffalo! Note that I had also bought BB for my cat, and he recommended I take her off it. Blue Buffalo is a lie!

My dog has been on Blue Buffalo for a couple of years. This last bag has made her sick. After a couple of feedings, she suffered gastritis and was drinking tons of water...then eventually diarrhea. It was weird diarrhea too, because it had zero smell. She never goes in the house, very well trained - this puddle of poo on our floor looked like nothing but the dissolved dog food. I immediately stopped feeding her the Blue (it was Life Protection Formula Chicken and Brown Rice) and just fed her boiled chicken and brown rice I cooked on the stove. She became better.

I thought she was all better and that it certainly couldn't be this expensive brand dog food I bought from PetSmart. Well, now I know it was, because as soon as I re-introduced the dog food, she had that same uncontrolled diarrhea accident in the house. I've taken her off the food. I went to PetSmart and told them. They said to switch her to Royal Canin. If they sell such harmful dog food as Blue, how do I know Royal Canin isn't poisonous as well? I guess my only alternative is to make her dog food myself. Rate my overall experience, huh? That would be 'Disgusted'.

I started my 3 month old Lab/German Shepherd puppy on Blue Buffalo Wilderness. She began episodes of diarrhea shortly after starting this formula. I contacted the company and they said that the Wilderness brand was not appropriate for large breed dogs. I questioned why this information wasn't on the bag for consumers. I received no answer. I was told to gradually transition to the Blue large breed adult food.

After transitioning, the diarrhea worsened and vomiting started as well. In the meantime, I have taken the puppy to the vet several times for treatment, with no improvement in symptoms. The puppy is now 4 months old. I called back to Blue to report this continued problem. They told me that the large breed was the wrong recommendation and I should now switch to their Blue basic puppy brand. I didn't find Blue's recommendations to be consistent and wanted to seek further answers to my problem.

Therefore, after getting off the phone with the Blue Company, I decided to search the internet regarding this problem. In addition, I contacted my vet again and started the puppy on metronidazole. My internet search revealed many of these blogs of people with similar problems and they reported notifying the Blue Company with no results. After reviewing many similar complaints about the Blue Buffalo dog food and severe diarrhea problems, I realized that the Blue Company was aware of this continual problem, but did not honestly advise me. I found this to be a serious violation to doing what is right. After all, the consequences could be fatal to my puppy.

In addition, the cost in vet bills has been exorbitant. Therefore, I contacted them back to advise them that I felt misinformed and misguided on the advice to continue with Blue. They told me that it was probably something wrong with the dog since other dogs did fine on Blue Buffalo, and that the other similar complaints on the internet were related to primarily consumer ignorance. Examples that I was given by the Blue Company was of a person that was feeding their dog 10 lbs of food a day and many others that did not wean their animals when switching to Blue food. I assured them that my case involved neither of these examples.

I would have expected, out of concern for the animal, that they would be interested to explore the possibility that their food was a potential cause, and make an attempt to seek a solution. This wasn't the case. They did not covey a concern for the animal. They conveyed more concern with the continued promotion of their product.

The reason I use this term is because it would just run out of this little fellow. By Sunday, he was vomiting. First thing Monday morning, I took him in to his vet.

After $117, we put him on chicken and rice. The next day he was doing better so we took him in for a follow up checkup the next day. The vet said he would be fine and to put him back on his dog food a little at a time. So I did and by noon the next day, he had the runs again. I had to take him back to the vet only this time they kept him to do an x-ray and run some test. While he was at the vet, I started looking at reviews on Blue Buffalo. I was floored with all the stories on here. So I got with my vet about this matter and put him back on chicken with a new dog food and now he is doing so much better. I started my Great Dane on blue buffalo because the lady at PetSmart said it was the best. I also checked out their website and read the ingredients and info on the bag. After a week, we noticed her waste didn't smell but she had really bad diarrhea and was having accidents in the house. She was really upset about the accidents and hid for hours afterwards. We hired a private dog trainer to help with the potty issues and had numerous trips to the vet for the diarrhea. The vet told us to take her off the blue immediately. She started showing improvement within a few days and even though her waste smells again, she feels wonderful, acts like her old self and is no longer having accidents and being embarrassed.

I'm glad we found the problem before things got serious. I wish this company took the time to actually research these dangerous issues before they stock the shelves. I am also surprised that a company that claims to care about animals so much would continue to deliver a product that makes animals sick. I think they should be removed from the shelves.

We have an 8-year old Great Pyrenees and a 4-year old Pembroke Corgi. The Great Pyrenees has been on Blue Buffalo Large Breed Chicken and Brown Rice with a mix of Blue Buffalo Large Breed Fish and Oatmeal. The Corgi eats the same food a quarter cup in the morning with one cup evening. The Pyr gets a cup in the morning and about 4 cups of food in evening. Symptoms have been starting slowly with our Great Pyr making horrible wrenching sounds after eating and basically doing huge cow pie loose stools in the yard. She was given a blood test last August 2011 and her liver levels (ALK phosphatase) was 250 and now just last week (took her to vet because she was having trouble with her hips and drinking tons of water) the ALK phosphatase level is 850!

I called her breeder and dating back to the 1950s in the bloodline there has never been Cushing’s syndrome or liver problems with any of her dogs or the parents of our dog. Thank goodness I came upon this website. The vet wants to start tests for Cushing’s syndrome, etc. The last vet bill was $200 and if we proceed the next one it will be $200 to $300. The Corgi seems fine but I am going to have them run a blood test on him to check liver levels. He gets a lot less Blue Buffalo than our large breed dog so that might be the reason he hasn't shown symptoms yet. People need to start checking the liver levels of their dogs on this food and reporting them. Blood tests usually run around $25 to $30. If the liver levels are high, switch food first before doing other tests. I am sharing this info to my vet!

I adopted a kitten about a week ago and he was on adult Friskies. I had heard such great things about Blue Buffalo. I knew that was what I wanted to feed him. He started on it and immediately started to have explosive diarrhea. You could hear him in the litter box a room away. It was so bad. I figured it was the change in food so I ignored it. He was happy and playful and drinking water otherwise. I started to get concerned when all he did was have diarrhea and he no longer urinated. He is also litter trained and I would find puddles of diarrhea around the house.

I started him on an anti-diarrhea medicine for kittens and was giving it to him every four hours but to no avail. He was still having explosive stool. I came across these reviews and I am flabbergasted. His diarrhea looks exactly like the consistency and color as described by everyone else and it has been a week of straight diarrhea. He has lost weight and he is loosing his energy more and more everyday. I gave him some Purina wet food tonight and will no longer be feeding him Blue buffalo. He was on the Wilderness Kitten chicken formula dry. I just hope I caught it in time before any major damage was done.

I would not recommend any one to purchase this food. We have two dogs, a yellow lab and a black Cocker. Naturally wanting the best for our dogs, we are wanting to feed something healthy and talk to a Pet Smart young lady, who was trained to say what she was taught. She said this is a good product. I highly recommend it, she said, There was a lady who came in and said that her dog was having bowel problems, going more often than usual. She said do not allow that to alarm you, it will seize. On our 2 bags and I cannot do it any longer. Our dogs are not only having bowel problems, throwing up and urinate in the house and our dogs are 8 and 10, they are house broken.

I am very angry that Pet Smart and any other business would even store this any longer on their shelves, so I took my dog to get groomed and explain to the groomer, I am telling you my dog is not ill to be around other animals, explain the problem they were having, she, the groomer who also shows dogs said what are you feeding them? I told her she said, oh no, and explained the problems with this dog food. Now why in the ** does who ever governs companies who sells these product? After hearing enough stop and remove them from the shelf like they do for people? You cannot keep "natural" their ingredient store on a shelf at a store for many many months.

Needless to say, I am highly upset because my dogs mean a lot to me and to anyone who owns a dog and wants the best for them, by trying to feed them a healthy diet. I would appreciate a refund of the 2 bags which I have receipt and I also like these removed from the shelf of any store, that is shelving them too long of a period, such as Pet Smart. Because of this, I will never buy their product, nor will I ever shop at Pet Smart again. So long as nothing happens to my dogs, as of this point on from this product, I will not need any attorney but I do want reimbursement for the two bags we purchased totaling $63.11.

After a couple months, I noticed that the Mastiff only would have diarrhea and never a regular bowel movement. Then he began to experience incontinence - even though he is potty trained.

I called my vet today and as soon as I mentioned that she was on Blue Buffalo, the vet told me that was my first mistake.

I started getting suspicious of the dog food last night and fed her ground turkey this morning. Her stomach is already back to normal. Never again will I feed her BB and I will discourage anyone from feeding their dog this terrible food too. I stayed a loyal customer after the dog food recall back in 2010. What a joke. That should have been my clue that this is an inferior product that should not be fed to my dog.

Early last spring (2011), I decided to change my dog's food, due to some allergy issues( itching, and foot licking, It is now controlled due to prescription medication). I switched him very slowly from Royal Canin to Blue Buffalo Lamb and Rice Formula. Soon after, he developed horrible stomach noises, and bloody gel-like diarrhea. I took a sample to my vet. They looked at it, and decided it must be coccidiosis. He was treated, and was fine while on the rice/cottage cheese diet. Within a week, it started again. Once again I delivered a sample to my vet. They were going to "test" it this time. The report came back with "giardia". Again, he was treated, and the rice/cottage cheese diet was given. All seemed well.

Within a week once more, the diarrhea and gurgling returned. He would also refuse to eat anything. These "bouts" would happen every 2 to 4 days, and last anywhere from 2 to 24 hours. I felt so bad for him, because he would keep looking at me with a "please help me!" look on his face. I kept making changes with his treats (removing each, individually to see which might be the culprit) to no avail. Finally, in September, when he went in for a nail clipping (he is sedated for this), I asked the vet to check him, and take an x-ray if necessary, to see if maybe he had some kind of incomplete blockage that could be causing this. He did the x-ray, and told me that he saw nothing.

I thought surely the B.B. dog food could not cause this? But I decided to change foods anyway. I was a bit worried when I had gotten down to 3/4 of the new food and, 1/4 B.B., and it was still happening. Well, it has now been 3 weeks since the change was completed, and he has had none of the symptoms since. I feel horrible, like I was poisoning my best friend! I think the company needs to do some detailed researching into what could be the cause. I'm sure my dog could not be the only one affected.

Once we switched over to mostly adult food, he started drinking nearly a gallon of water a day and was unable to "hold it" until we could take him outside. After several large puddles in the house, my mother suggested it might be a food issue. We looked this up and saw that others had had similar issues (admittedly, with different BB formulations) in the past. We immediately switched him over to a different brand and within 24 hours, the problem stopped and he is apparently back to normal. This two-month stretch has been the longest I have kept him on it and he has started a few symptoms all in the same week. He started itching all over, itching himself raw until he bled. He vomited once out of no where. His stools weren't the normal color that day and were a little softer. He just looked so sad. I took him to the vet who gave him a shot of something for the itching which has helped. Two days after I took him to the vet, I woke up one morning to find three episodes of diarrhea in one night all over my house.

The whole reason I started Blue Buffalo is because 2-3 years ago Iams almost killed my dachshund when he started violent vomiting and got diarrhea after being on their food. BB advertises that they don't use fillers or by-products and claims that they are natural and very good for pets. So I thought it was a good choice for him. It apparently wasn't. It is no better then any other dog food just because it’s three times the price.

Within weeks, both cats developed mammary tumors, first the older cat, then the younger! The older cat's tumors were aggressive and required bi-lateral surgical removal. The vet said due to the fast growing nature of the tumors, she went ahead and removed all mammary tissue except for 2 small areas. The vet said after a few weeks recovery, she would have to go back and get the remaining masses out, depending on the rate of their growth.

My poor baby had to endure a painful, and now I believe an unnecessary surgery, due to this horrible food. Soon after, the younger cat started down the same road with the fast growing tumors. The vet was shocked at the second cat developing the same problem, since they were not from the same litter or even the same parents. They were adopted from different cities. She said two cats from different litters developing these fast growing tumors was almost unheard of, so she contacted her fellow vets for more input. After lots of discussion, we decided to switch foods as the food and the litter were the only thing the two cats had in common.

We brought home a new lab puppy last February. We immediately put her on the same food that our two cats were on: Blue Buffalo, but for large breed puppy. This dog immediately had pudding stools, which we attributed to the new food even though we mixed it in the old, new environment, no litter mates, etc. She got to where she had to be encouraged to eat her food with wet food and, of course, this was also Blue Buffalo brand but puppy formula. Only occasionally would there be a "normal" stool.

In the last two months, it has just become pudding and straining where eliminating takes a long time walking around the yard in the hunched position. The diarrhea is not uncontrolled. It is just the consistency of the elimination. In the meantime, our older cat now has developed the same diarrhea pudding when eliminating, same color and awful smell. He can't even make it downstairs to the litter box.

The last month has become consistently worse, but again only at the time of elimination not uncontrolled. Both pets are active and seem normal, although the cat definitely lost weight and now blood is in the stool pudding. Today, I switched them both to Wellness foods and hope upon hope they are not beyond help if this does not work. With two pets experiencing similar problems, the only deduction I can make is it has to be this food.

I selected one star as per your form, but in reality, my rating would be a minus 100.

My 7 yr. old German shepherd dog has been healthy all her life, but became violently ill after ingesting Blue Buffalo food on July 4th, as did my male to a lesser degree. I introduced the food slowly, put them on a diet of hamburger and rice prior after first introducing them and only added a single handful of the food that night. I stayed up with her all night, trying to get her to retain water and ice, but she became dangerously dehydrated due to the non-stop vomiting.

For three days, my vet could not tell me if she would live. I returned the bag to PetSmart; it was immediately disposed of so when I called the next morning to get a sample, it was gone. I reported a 'bad smell' and told them she got sick within an hour of eating when I returned the bag.

I contacted Blue Buffalo. They sent an insurance claim form and request for vet records. I complied. They referred it to their legal department and replied that their insurance company required absolute proof that the food was bad. They have had several instances in the last five years of pets becoming sick, including recalls from changing their composition and causing vitamin D poisoning. (I only learned of this afterward.) They offer no proof that their food is healthy or safe, relying on "customer statements" of belief, yet told me my belief was of no consequence.

They misread the vet records, claiming my male had a pre-existing condition of vomiting. The record clearly states that he ate part of a sock and expelled it with no previous or subsequent episodes. They claimed that they could "do nothing" because I couldn't prove the food was bad. I replied in a letter comparing their argument to a person hospitalized due to food poisoning. No doctor tests the food before treating a patient; it would be medically irresponsible. There had been no other changes to their diet or routines prior to this event. Change to a different dog food has had no adverse results. They are happy and healthy again. This company has had many similar complaints, apparently has poor shipping and handling practices, has a short record of production, flimsy packaging, and no procedures in place for training their retailers. Their money seems to go to advertising rather than research and development. Their food was the proximal cause of the problems. I have all the correspondence and would be happy to provide copies.

My female was hospitalized for four days and finally came home, weak, and on antibiotics. My bill was $875 for her and about $100 for my male. Had they been reasonable in their response or even attempted to meet me half way on the issues, I would have been satisfied. But they denied all responsibility on the same logic principals they criticized me for using resulting in justification for them and denial to me.

I believe they have a responsibility to fairly judge the situation and that they did not fulfill their obligation. They advertise that they treat pets "like part of the family". If they were parents treating children like this, they would be in violation of child protection laws. I believe they need to be held to the standard they advertise.

Daisy began having diarrhea so I kept the ratio of BB food to 1/2 and the Royal Canin at 1/2 and added white rice. She didn't improve and began passing only blood and vomit, which prompted us to take her to the Cornell emergency vet hospital. Her condition was so severe that they kept her overnight and gave her IV fluids and antibiotics. The vet's notes state that she was dehydrated, had gastroenteritis, and anorexic and that her liver enzymes were elevated.

On August 16, 2011, I received a letter from Kim ** of Blue Buffalo stating that their vets looked over the paperwork from Cornell and claimed that there was no cause indicated, which is not true since the vet's notes state exactly what I told them about changing her food to BB!

This company obviously is more concerned with making money than the welfare of its clients.

Given that this appears to be an ongoing issue and that the initial recall in Oct. 2010 was buried on their website when it should have been the first thing that one sees, I truly believe that a class action suit is in order.

I personally believe that Blue Buffalo, the product and the company, is dangerous. I've owned German Shepherd dogs for over forty years and have experienced nothing like what has just happened with one bag of Blue Buffalo. I transitioned slowly, over a month's time. I had to have my 3-year old male treated for severe diarrhea; my female experienced the same. I took them off of it for four days. When I put a single handful of Blue Buffalo in their rice, etc. mix, he had diarrhea again. On July 4, my 8-year old female, in an hour and a half, emptied all the contents of her stomach. Each hour following that, she threw up at least twice per hour.

Around 12 midnight, she seemed to settle down a little so I decided to get a little sleep. At 2 am, she woke me up with the sounds of trying to throw up with nothing in her stomach; she couldn't even retain water. She became increasingly weak, so I spent the remainder of the morning outside, sitting with her and finally was able, between 3 and 6 am, to get her to retain about 3 liters of water. I left at 7 to take her to my most trusted vet. The technician called and asked him to come in early, which he did. Her blood test was horrible -- electrolytes in the severe category, severe to critical dehydration, but no parasites, etc. I left her with my vet, who immediately started IV drips. I went back to sit with her from 3 to 5 pm. She was listless, trying to hold her head up but nodding off, then jerking awake.

My vet could give no firm opinion on her chances of survival at that moment, despite doing everything he knew to do. He called that evening with an update that was basically the same. The next morning's call amounted to the fact that she had not thrown up again, but was no better, no worse. She began to respond somewhat later that afternoon; and when I went to sit with her around, she was more alert, acting more like herself. I'm hoping she will be well enough and that it will be safe for me to bring her home today. When my vet called last night, he said she was more lively. I believe she was able to rally due to basic good health prior to the Blue Buffalo; but in those twelve hours, I came very close to losing her. Further, I have no assurance that other damage did not occur.

I believe that the Blue Buffalo company is jumping on the bandwagon with profit as its primary concern. It seems, from other complaints I've read on multiple sites, that they are dangerously lacking in research and development, quality control, honesty, integrity, responsibility, and concern. I believe their claims, which amount to being all things to all dogs, are outrageous. I believe that their methods, along with the reasons stated above, leave their product vulnerable to toxic results. I believe they are remiss in the handling of their product. I am suspicious that many of the positive raves of product satisfaction are seeded (people being paid to write positive comments). I believe that their advertising is without justification or scientific reliability. I believe that their product is dangerous and that the company has no valid internal controls aimed at preventing harm.

About the beginning of May, I switched my Papillions to Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken after Petsmart stopped carrying Science Diet Natures' Best for Small Breeds Chicken. Within 3 weeks, I started noticing that they were throwing up every now and then. Soon, they started not being able to go all night without defecating on the floor in the middle of the night. This soon turned to diarrhea. I have spent the past month going back and forth to the vet. They had blood work and stool samples tested, all negative. They have been given nausea medicine, antibiotics, Panacur and a powder to promote healthy bacteria in their bowels.

I have alternated feeding them canned Science Diet with their dry food. Every time I go back to giving them the Blue Buffalo within 3-4 days, the symptoms starts back in. I even have been giving them bottled water. The vet is stumped, but after reading other people's experience with Blue Buffalo, I honestly believe it's the food! Their poor digestive systems after a month and a half of this, are in sad shape and so is my pocket book after over $600 in vet bills. Blue Buffalo sucks and from the looks of it, it isn't worth even trying to contact them since I no longer have the bag, didn't think it could possibly have a connection since I believed their commercials. Don't know how long it will take my dogs to get back to normal but would highly recommend that no one feed this to their dogs.

I went online and saw that their was a recall on the product. I stopped feeding my dog the product and within 2 days, my dog was fine. I spoke with company and got a full refund on the two bags I had. I saved a sample of the dog food. Company is not taking any blame at this point.

I bought a bag of biscuits that had meal bugs in them. They were used and purchased well before the expiration date. I returned them to the store and wrote to the Blue Buffalo to let them know and to request a complimentary bag. I received no response. I heard that they contract the manufacturer of their foods to several companies across the country. Some of those plants are responsible for making lots of low quality and recalled foods. You can take your overpriced food and put it somewhere.

Medical evidence from my veterinarian showed that my dogs had dangerously high calcium blood levels. Evidence points to the cause as being consumption of Blue Buffalo's dog food, "Wilderness" chicken dog food. I spoke with Kim **, customer service manager for Blue Buffalo. She listened to my concerns. She spoke with my veterinarian. Testing was conducted on the food.

As of today, Blue Buffalo denies any responsibility. There is no other explanation for the symptoms both of my dogs were showing. After almost two months off Blue Buffalo dog food, all symptoms have disappeared. Their last blood work showed that their calcium levels had returned to normal. The only change has been getting them off Blue Buffalo.

When my dog was about 4 months old he is 1 year 4 months old now we were feeding him Purina Select puppy chow and he was doing well on it. However within the 3rd bag we bought he got extremely ill, throwing up and had diarrhea. I and my husband were out of town when the symptoms started so I thought maybe he was home sick but the people we left him with also had a dog which ate some of the Purina. We left for ours and got sick as well so the people watching my dog gave him some Iams for the time being and everything went back to normal within a few days.

When I and my husband got home we went to pet smart with the bag of Purina and got a new bag this time of Purina One. My dog Cujo refused to go near it obviously sensing something horribly wrong with the food so we took that bag back as well called the company and got a bunch of coupons which we have not used as well as our money back. After this disaster I started looking online for better dog food. My other dogs i grew up with were always on Kibbles and Bits and never had any problems but I found out by our vet that that food is like candy to a dog so I was like no way we need something better. I came across Blue Buffalo online and so many people at the dog park I go to told me how good the food is so I said hey let’s give this stuff a shot.

Well to say my dog loved it would be an understatement I would feed him every day at 10 am in the morning if I was not awake he would bark and bark until I got up to feed him his food and it wouldn’t take him anytime at all to finish it. I would have to feed him another bowl by night time to make him happy. So at first I was like oh my god thank you Blue buffalo! Then the troubles started.

At first when the diarrhea occurred I thought ok the vet told me this would happen if I switched him cold turkey from the Purina but it would start to harden after a few days. However that was not the case. Early morning right after Cujo ate he would ** normally just once and then after 4pm everyday during his next bowel movement it would be pudding, and I mean actual pudding like taking a cup from the fridge and pouring it on my carpet and it smelled so foul I would want to vomit while cleaning it up. Not only was this diarrhea horrible because of the smell but he couldn’t control himself it would hit him all of a sudden and we would go he couldn’t ask to go outside so house training was put on hold making the matter all that much worse.

But I kept feeding him the food convinced it was just him adjusting. After I would say about 4 months of this going on however I finally said enough is enough something is wrong with my dog. I took him to the vet where they told me it would cost over $800 dollars for tests and meds to find out what was wrong and that he was probably allergic to something I was like no I’m going to try something else so I went to pet smart and talked to one of the dog trainers he said it could be blue buffalo had too much protein for my dog (he's a Siberian husky) the trainer suggested Nutro Ultra and I bought it.

Within 1 day the diarrhea was gone. 1 day! Meaning it wasn’t the dog it was the food! Since then I haven’t went back to Blue Buffalo I have switched my dogs food a few more times because he didn’t like Ultra and I’m still trying to find something he likes as much as blue with not much success but I will not go back to that food. The Bag once opened always smelled horrible it would fill up the room with whatever meat smell was in its worst being the fish and the diarrhea wasn’t worth the happiness of my dog, I didn’t want to put him in harm of having more serious things happen to his stomach. All in all I have to say stay away from this food there is something not right with the ingredients they use. Go to Evo or Diamond or Canidae just stay away from Blue you will be a much happier dog owner for it!

I adopted a puppy at 3 months old. I wanted the very best for him, so I talked to a few people about what to feed him. When at a Petsmart, they told me Blue was one of the good holistic brands, so I started my puppy on it. At first, he had occasional bouts of diarrhea, which I assumed was from switching his food (which I did gradually). He is now almost 6 months old, and has battled diarrhea since the day I got him. At best, his stool would be the consistency of a thick pudding. However, the last 3 weeks, (since he started his third bag of chicken and brown rice puppy formula) he has had uncontrollable diarrhea, to the point that I was waking up to a horrible mess every morning.

I cooked him rice and chicken, and after a day of this, his stool hardened. So I would start mixing his food in gradually. As soon as I did, the horrible and uncontrollable diarrhea would come back. From day one, I assumed that I most likely just have a puppy with a sensitive stomach, since dobermans are prone to this, but I became extremely worried about him, this last 3 weeks. The only reason I didn't take him to a vet was because he was rarely vomiting and would still drink water, and want to have his play time.

After 3 weeks, I knew I was going to have to take him to a vet. The poor little guy couldn't control his bowels at all anymore. Just out of curiosity, I started reading about his food and saw all these complaints. I decided I would try a different food, and give him 24 hours to see if there was a change. I went out and bought him a different brand of holistic food, and sure enough, within 24 hours his stool is completely normal. It has barely and odor and is totally solid. It hasn't been normal since the day I got him. The smell alone could clear the neighborhood when he would go in the past!

This food just has to be awful. Since he's been on his new food, he is a new dog. He only goes about 2-3 times a day, and it's a small amount with virtually no smell. I can't believe a company like this is allowed to make the claim that they are a holistic and healthy dog food. Do not feed your beloved pets this brand of food. It will surely make them sick, if not kill them. My boy could have died if I did not discover this. I can't even imagine. At best, it would have cost me hundreds of dollars in vet bills, like some others, just to determine this food is harmful to my puppy. I'm disgusted and will never purchase another product made by this company. I will also make sure everyone I know who has a pet, stays away from it.

I have been feeding my dogs with Blue Buffalo for almost a year. I was on my 12th bag at Petco to get my free bag coupon. When I opened the 12th bag, it smelled more fishy then usual but I fed it anyway. When I put down the bowl, my big dog flipped hers over. My little dog ate hers and threw it up whole pieces in one chunk. I thought maybe she got a little too much salt water at the beach. My big dog got hungry and ate her spilled mess of food.

I continued to feed it and 5 days later, my big dog started to throw up whole meals. My little dog is more fussy, or so I thought, because she did not eat hers at both morning and evening feedings. Both dogs started to vomit but mostly the large dog. I immediately stopped feeding them the food and tried some chicken and rice. Again, the vomit came. What went in came out a few hours late whole.

That night my little dog had bloody diarrhea and my big dog seemed constipated. I took both dogs to the vet and they could find nothing wrong. While walking my dogs before going into the vet, my big dog finally had her big bout of bloody diarrhea. They gave me pills and IV fluids for my big dog because she lost 4 pounds in the few days and was severely dehydrated as she could not keep anything even water down. My big dog is 12 years old.

I got a prescription food for the dogs and by the end of the week, both seemed to be doing well. After a week of that, I decided to get another bag of Blue Buffalo. Stupid me, but I thought after a year with no problems, maybe I just got a bad bag so I wanted to give them the benefit of doubt. Well, 5 days into the next bag, my big dog started the same symptoms as a few weeks earlier. I immediately stopped and started her back on her pills and prescription diet.

I brought the 2nd bag back to the store and got my money back or a gift card because of no receipt. I'm still not sure what to feed, so I just cooked for a week or so. Well the story gets better because I work at the store that I bought the food from. I was in the store and saw another bag in a shopping cart that was opened. I asked the cashier and she said it was just returned because the person's dogs got sick. I found the return slip and called the lady to see what happened. All 3 of her dogs had the same symptoms as mine. She also said her larger dog got more sick then her 2 smaller ones, just like mine and that may be that the larger dogs ate more.

Her vet also would not say it was the food but also told her to stop with what she was feeding and go to the prescription food for a while. Like my dogs, hers got better in a few days with prescription food and lots of pills. All dogs vomited and had bloody diarrhea.

I never met the lady with the 3 sick dogs. It was just my luck to be in the right place to be able to compare stories. Something is not right? I even told the Blue Buffalo lady who comes to our store to try to sell more food, and she now avoids me. She did get the lot # off of the lady's bag that was returned but I still do not know what was done.

This holiday weekend my husband and I went to Petsmart in Green Acres Mall and purchased a bag of dog food. The company is called The Blue Buffalo Co. In the front of the bag, it says Longevity. In the back of the bag, it says, "Best by July 13, '11," in the bottom of that, it says, "TL5 21-19." It could be TLS but I think it says, "TL5." About the fourth feeding, I jumped and screamed because I saw something come out of the bag that wasn't nuggets. Silly me, it was a piece of paper with the color black and red. If you know what a paper bag is like, well, the paper seems to be like that. Maybe a little different. But it's definitely not a paper bag.

I immediately called my daughter because earlier I called her to tell her that I noticed that my dog's pee had changed color to dark yellow with a tint of orange. But she told me that it could be the color of the nuggets that changed her pee color. She asked me to immediately call the company and let them know. An answering machine picked up and I left the message in the machine that I had found something in my dog's food. About three minutes later, a representative called me back and asked me what did I find in the dog's food bag. I explained to her the item that I found and she told me that she would sent me a prepaid envelope, so that I can send it to her. She also wanted me to send her a picture of the item in an e mail which I did. She thought it was really funny. Kept laughing all through the conversation.

As I grabbed the bag to seal it, I noticed a big ball when I realized that there were nuggets together forming a nice size ball. I didn't want to touch it after that. My husband wanted me to brake it and see if anything was inside but I refused. I didn't want to find anything else out. I think that dog owners should be aware of this because I don't know what's in that paper. And the truth is, I got scared. I keep the bag of dog food underneath the cabinet along with my other dishes that I don't use. Should I let someone else know about this or should I just forget about it.

I wasn't going to say anything about this, but I can't let it go. I recently bought a bag of Blue Buffalo Large Breed from a Toledo Petsmart. Petsmart is a wonderful place to shop, but it's nearly a 45 minute drive for me. I was willing to make the drive because this Blue Buffalo dog food is supposed to be good. After making a 1 hour and 30 minute round trip to buy my dog food, I found that my dog food was all moldy. This was a new bag of food and it was a solid ball of mold. It wasn't a little, the whole bag was mold! It smelled horrible and would have been even worse if I would have fed my dog this crap. Petsmart was great about the return. They gave me a full refund with no questions asked and I got on a much better food. They told me that I was not the first person to return a moldy bag of Blue. Shouldn't there be a recall on this? This could really make a lot of dogs sick!

In the last 6 weeks, one of my Chihuahuas (10 year old male registered) began having something resembling seizures, but he remained conscious. I was horribly alarmed since I was out of town but convinced my spouse to take him to the vet. Blood and urine tests revealed nothing. Antibiotics and steroids, another emergency vet trip 2 weeks later (I did this trip, to a long time vet two states away) and a change of diet, more antibiotics, negative tests for tick disease, X rays showed nothing the vet was very concerned about (only a few small spots that faded after a week on Ketoconozole) but he's still having episodes and extreme weight loss. A temporary return to the Blue Buffalo and symptoms returned and worsened.

Interestingly, a trip to Pet Smart to get more dog food resulted in a discussion with a rep from Blue Buffalo in the store who inquired about my reasons for buying the low allergen diet (which did not help and which had the same effect as the regular varieties after a trial). She gave me $4 worth of coupons (which I used immediately) and said she would be there the next Sunday and to be sure and let her know how my dog was. However, I did not make it to the store.

Also, two daughters (9 years old full sisters 3/4 Chihuahua-1/4 Mini Dachshund) of this dog also have had identical symptoms; the first one on two occasions within the last 6 months, the second concurrent with her father's symptoms, but starting a week later. My vet bill is now $300 plus expenses, and I still don't have a diagnosis. The vet recommended putting my dog on Hill's Science Prescription z/d, which I did as soon as I could purchase it. He is better, but is still having evening episodes. The symptoms are like those listed for Canine Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome. Eating the Blue Buffalo brings on episodes in the time it takes for digestion to begin, and they continue.

I recently purchased a bag of dog food from a PetSmart that will remain nameless. It is a food called Blue Buffalo. A lady that works part time for their company told me about how great it was and that they made their own food using the best ingredients and that it was the best on the market. I tried a small bag and for two weeks, my dog had the runs, but it gets worse. She told me how this food nourished the body very naturally and I should give it a few weeks to really see the results. I listened and I went back to buy another bag. I got the bag home and it was a solid chunk of mold! It was absolutely disgusting and it smelled horrible. God knows what might have happened if my poor dog would have eaten it.

After seeing this, I found out about the false claims that Blue is making. They do not produce their own food and they have no idea the quality that is put into it by the co-packers that they hire to make it. In fact, they have been having mold problems for months that they aren't even aware of, but pet stores continue to take returns from unhappy customers. Their food does not prevent cancer! Blue Buffalo is a lying, dishonest company! I have pictures to prove the horrible mold too.

I have been feeding my 7 month old puppy Blue Buffalo's dry puppy lamb and rice formula for six months and have never had a problem with it, until I recently opened a new bag. He immediately developed diarrhea and gas. On a hunch, I pulled the old bag out of the trash and compared the ingredient list with the ingredient list on the new bag. They have changed their formula but have not put any identifying notification on the bag, nor was there any sign at Petsmart where I bought the food. So consumers are buying this without realizing the formula is completely changed, unless they happen to compare old ingredient lists to new ones. I guess we consumers have to bring our reading glasses with us every time we buy pet food. I wonder how many other dogs are out there getting sick and their owners have no idea that the pet food formulas have changed.
