After Ancestry failed to obtain my results twice I asked for a refund. I waited weeks in between the tests to find out that they were sending yet another test. I asked for a refund instead of a 3rd test. They said a flat NO. Told me I had to take the 3rd test before they would consider a refund. Never got a 3rd test. They ignored my requests for results or a refund until time ran out to get either. I have no money and no DNA results but Ancestry got paid anyway. NOTHING BUT A SCAM.

Updated on 05/13/2019: We waited for an hour and half to speak to a supervisor. My husband was finally transferred to a MATT who put my husband on speaker phone while the employees were laughing. My husband has a cold. Matt was disrespectful and rude. My husband's results were incorrect and they refused to credit us, send a new kit or say they were sorry. We were told that DNA changes over time! HAHAH Seriously, I bet a few inmates in prison would love to hear that their DNA results may change over time. SERIOUSLY? Stay away from this scam agency!
Original Review: I called Ancestry.com and sat on the phone for 1 hour and was given the run around. I asked for a credit or to have a new kit sent out. I was continually told that a supervisor was finishing up with another customer. I asked for the employee's name and she would not give it to me saying against policy.

Bought an Ancestry dna kit for my mother. She tried it three times. Did not work the three times. So I have messaged them 4 times and called and left my number. I still have not gotten a callback or an email. What a waste of money ($100). She still wants a dna kit so I guess I will go with another company. I am so not impressed by them, they just lost a client and I will be deleting my account.

My brother sent me an invitation to share his DNA info. Ancestry admits their advertisements promise this, but THEY DON'T ALLOW SHARING DNA unless that guest ALSO has an Ancestry account and has ALSO PAID to have their own DNA on File with Ancestry. This is contrary to what their, "Sharing DNA Directions" state. Their representative admitted it isn't stated in their ad. He did not get what he paid for. Ancestry's Help Representative hung up on me. Deal with a more professional outfit!

The information gathered from Ancestry.com is invaluable but their policies on renewal need to be more transparent. BE WARNED - RENEWAL IS AUTOMATIC. While the small print in the T&Cs say it will be automatically renewed, I did not receive any notification that they were about to renew it nor did I receive any confirmation that they had renewed it. My only notification was the bill appearing on my bank statement. I was able to cancel but it cost me one month subscription.

I paid for 3 test. 1 me 2 wife 3 daughter, my test came in first. I had over 1000 cousins all but a handful have nothing in common. Never heard of any last name of family members. But by then my wife's DNA test came in and what a surprise we are 5 to 8 cousins not true. Then my daughter test comes in and we are not a match. My wife is my cousin, and my daughter and me not related. Cannot be true, I have my tree back to the 1800's. This part is true. DNA is a joke on us. Don't pay for it.

My husband has had a paid family tree on Ancestry.com for many years. In 2007 I added details to my entry and many additional family members with photos and details. At Christmas time, he did the DNA test. Then Ancestry offered him the opportunity to order more DNA kits. We ordered one for me. The surprise was that I have to pay another $45 per month to own my own account and have the same level of access that we already have through his account.
Ancestry.com has used the details and photos that I posted on his family tree and now many "relatives" now have essentially been sold the access to my data, but I cannot even get to it without subscribing! I called customer service and was told that it was in the fine print somewhere that I would not get a real DNA result, only matches and that I had to subscribe to copy any hints that I had already built on my portion of my husband's tree! I was essentially out of luck. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT, Ancestry.com! I'm surprised there isn't a class action suit against you for this already.

I was very excited about Ancestry DNA a couple of years ago when I purchased the kit and got to know where my ancestors came from. At that time, I got 81% Finnish (no surprise at all), 7% Irish, 5% Scandinavian, 3% Western European, 2% Eastern European, 1% South Asian and less than 1% Central Asian. All so exciting, right? These fraction percentages made it quite interesting as most of us already have some idea where our families come from. It is the smaller percentages that make the test worthwhile. Now, with the very much praised ‘System Update’ all the results were diluted and rounded up making the test less accurate. This rounding up was supposed to be an improvement claiming that as more people (millions!) had the test done and their results were entered into the global database that would somehow make the test more ‘accurate’. The opposite is true.
The whole point behind a DNA analysis is to prove how UNIQUE a person is and all of this should be based on their individual test result and nothing else! When you start comparing somebody’s sample to thousands of other samples in the database, you’ll get a rounded up, watered down result, and this is completely contrary to the whole philosophy behind ‘everybody’s uniqueness’. With this new system, millions of people are herded into their mainstream national gene pools and everything else is discarded. Then, why not just look at a map and say you are 100% the nationality of the country you come from! It would be a lot cheaper than paying for the test, that’s for sure.
Now, with the system update in place, I find I am 98% Finnish, 1% Irish and 1% Scandinavian and everything else is forgotten. Thank you Ancestry for ruining your test and disappointing millions of people who participated! I want to give you an example of your screwup. In my own original test, I was very intrigued about my 7% Irish heritage because it is not a known fact in my family. My mother does not have it (proven by her test), so I knew this had to come from my father’s side. My father has passed away, so I had my aunt (his sister) do the Ancestry DNA instead and the disappointing result was that she is 100% Finnish!!! Had my aunt done the test prior to the system update, it is possible there could have been some more interesting results. As of now, I don’t recommend Ancestry DNA for anybody anymore. Just look at the map and the country of your origin, and that’s your DNA too...100%.

What is wrong with the thinking in a company when they TRICK people into signing up for monthly subscriptions when by all appearances it is a one time fee?!! I am a retired person and I am right now dealing with trying to get my money back from two lecherous companies. Ancestry.ca and Adobe. NO MORE ONLINE PURCHASES!!! I am extremely disappointed with this company. I purchased the Ancestry.com kit for myself after seeing advertisements claiming that people's ancestry was traced from all over the world and even showing when they came to America, etc. Truth is, you will get a 'hook' only if you PAY FOR 'MORE DETAILS.' I keep getting emails that say they found a link to my DNA...but in order to see what they're telling you, you have to sign up and pay a monthly fee - Premium, Premium Plus, or Complete. I DO NOT want any continual monthly charges nor do I want to give them any of my financial information. I am really angry at this whole scam.

Wanted to let you know I have dropped my Ancestry subscription. After doing so I was shocked to find out that I did not own copies of the records I thought I had paid for. I believe that most subscribers are not aware that they do not retain ownership of the records they download. It seems you must maintain their expensive subscription in order to view your records. So If you plan to eventually hand off the research to a family member you are obligating them to renew the subscription if they want to see your work and/or continue it. I assume this policy is explained somewhere but I could not find it and they are not upfront about it. Therefore, I would recommend you think very hard before starting their gotcha and expensive subscription.

I was given an Ancestry DNA kit as a Christmas gift in December of 2018. As instructed in the directions, I registered the kit on an account I opened and mailed the kit in the first week in January 2019. I never heard back about the progress or receipt by Ancestry so I call them on 2/6/19. I spoke to a customer service rep named Matt. After a half hour of fumbling and lack of knowledge, Matt finally located the kit number I provided. He told me that Ancestry personnel had entered my email address incorrectly on his end. He said it was an error on their part and could not be corrected because of the way their program was designed. So he said he would mail me a new kit. We doubled checked the shipping information to make sure they had the correct name and address.
On 2/11/19, not having received the kit, I called again and spoke to Brenda. She told me it would take 7 to 10 days to receive it. I gave her the original kit number and asked her to check the date Matt mailed it out. As before, after about 30 minutes of being put on hold and fumbling back and forth, she told me she couldn’t find any record of it being sent. Once again I gave her all the shipping information and she said she would send out a replacement kit that same day.
On 2/25/19, guess what. Still no kit received. I called again and spoke to Crystal. Another 30 minutes or so, after explaining everything again, Crystal told me they had no record of a kit being sent to me. I asked to speak to a supervisor. Crystal balked, but put me on hold until one was available. Another 15 minutes went by and Crystal was back telling me the supervisor was still busy, but she would send another kit out. We carefully went over the shipping details. She said it would be shipping that day and after waiting another 5 to 10 minutes she provided me a confirmation number.
Today is 3/11/19. Yup you are correct, still no kit. I called again today hoping I would be able to talk to a supervisor. The recording said there would be at least a 30 minute wait to speak to a customer rep. I had other things to do. By the way, I gave all this information to Ancestry in an email survey. Gave them 1 star saying I would never recommend them to a friend. The automated survey responded to the 1 star and asked why. I explained it and have never heard back from them. Same zero response from an email I sent through their website to customer service.

I purchased a DNA kit for 99.00. Was not aware at time of purchase. That to be able to read your results you had to purchase a separate membership to unlock your results. I had taken advantage of the free 14 day membership to build my family tree. Also paid a subscription for 19.99 for one month to utilize some of their info to find your family information. To get full access to all records can be costly. 6 weeks later I get the DNA results. In order to read/unlock the results. You have to pay for a different subscription. Had I known that this was just a money pit and that I had to buy the corresponding subscription to review my results. I would not have bothered with this whole process. I suggest you review all of the subscriptions required to build your family tree. And the subscription required to read/unlock your results. Because I am not putting any more money in this venture. Ancestry needs to let customers know when they are purchasing DNA kits that they will be charged $25 for their materials if they have to seek a refund of their DNA kits. I purchased 3 kits. Got one free for Christmas gifts. No one wanted to share their DNA so I called to get a refund. First they only gave a refund for two of the three kits, as stated because my third would be considered the free one, but they were actually charging me for restocking fees for each kit of $25.00 without my knowledge which I later found out. So, my refund was for about $118.00 which I paid $201.00 with shipping and handling fees. And get this, they told me to throw the kits away instead of returning them! So, I charged sneakingly for restocking fees, but If you ask me that is not restocking!
The next day, I called to get a refund of the fourth one, the one I was charged for since I returned 3 kits the day before and was only refunded for two of those. The person that I gifted it to also felt uncomfortable about sharing their DNA. So, when I asked for a refund they told me they already gave me a refund for three. I told them no, I was only refund for two. We went round and round about this.
I talked to supervisor, who did refund me my full amount of $201.00 as a courtesy. She explained the restocking fee policy. I stated to her that they need to let customers know when they purchase these kits that they will be charged a $25.00 fee if they return them. I don't want to be told this while trying to return them. Also, the supervisor stated the $25.00 is for their materials that customers do have to pay when they are asking for a refund. They just say restocking fee, but I'm still confused because I have to pay $25.00 for their materials that they asked me to throw away! The kit was not opened. I could have returned it, but they did not want them, but wanted me to pay $25.00 for them! Nevertheless, I was refunded my full amount. I was very sorry for the transaction as I did not know they don't accept them back. But, want you to pay $25.00 if you ask for a refund. I just wanted to write this review to remind everyone- don’t even sign up for the free trial if you think you’ll forget about it! There are plenty of free resources to find members of your genealogy elsewhere- with Ancestry, you’re truly just paying for the pretty layout of the website. I got the free trial, right around Christmas. I was going to cancel it prior to them charging me for the subscription. I ended up getting really sick and completely missed the end date. Because of this, I was charged $35.
So, I reached out to Ancestry in hopes of fixing this. I knew from reading the terms and conditions that they won’t refund a monthly subscription- but, I thought that since I didn’t plan on using the subscription, I could be refunded and go on. No, this did not happen. Marie, Darcy, Doria, and Yewande have been the four customer service employees to contact me so far about this case. Darcy first informed me that they couldn’t refund me, due to me having bought a monthly subscription. I understood that, and explained why I was wanting the refund. Doria simply repeated what I was already told, just worded differently.
Lastly, Yewande told me that they “[I] made some searched on my account on January 2nd, 2019”, and again repeated that I couldn’t have a refund. So it appears that if you make a simple search while under a monthly subscription, you will not be refunded. I am disappointed. I pretty much try to refund a service that I didn’t even use after payment, but to no avail. Please be careful with subscriptions. Ancestry will do nothing to help you.

Being of "so called" ** decent, there is not a lot of information available to go back in time accurately to retrace my family's steps. The prospect of using available technology to point me in the right direction was appealing and although not an exact science, I was willing to further explore the idea. I saw a lot of ads about Ancestry DNA so I thought why not give them a try. November 14, 2018 The nightmare begins... After my kit was late several weeks and never showed at my mailbox, I contacted the company. They apologized and assured me that another kit will immediately be sent out. After some time and my frustration growing, the replacement kit arrived.
I followed the instructions to a tee. I don't smoke or consume alcohol. I made sure my sample was filled to the line indicated and made sure I did not eat or drink anything in accordance to the parameters that they set. Feeling pretty good that at least things will go smoothly from here on out, I resigned myself to a 2 month wait and then obtaining my results. In mid December, I was informed that my sample was received and my DNA extracted. Jan 3rd, 2019 I was informed that my DNA sample was no good and they would need another sample and could send a 3rd kit out to me for free.
I declined because I did not want to go through this fiasco all over again. I was told at that time that my account will be cancelled and that the postage could not be returned to me. I was also told that they would subtract $25.00 from me in addition to the $10.00 postage. In just a couple days or so I made a special trip to a Post Office where I could go into the lobby during normal working hours and place it in a mail drop. I didn't want to just drop it into an outside mail drop since sometimes people put liquids or other garbage there. Then I waited for the results. The only result I got was an email on December 3rd "Still interested? Looks like you didn’t complete your order." They were still trying to sell me what I'd already paid for! I was terribly disappointed in the one page, color-laden map document that told me nothing. My relatives were German, Scottish, and Armenian. No mention of my Armenian ancestors in the report was amazing to me, because my son took a 23&Me test and was identified as having that genetic value. September 2018, I sent in my mom's DNA to Ancestry. Since my mom has a Chinese name, the DNA came back saying that from China Originally, she was not born in China and China has 56 different kind of Chinese. There was no breakdown of which race she is. It seems that Ancestry looks at your name and make a final decision to tell you which country your ancestry are from, not which race and ethnicity we are from. Example if you have a Japanese name and you were not born in Japan, and you are a mix bred, Ancestry will tell you that you are from Japan because you have a Japanese name.
Why do we pay Ancestry so much to do the test, is to know the breakdown of our DNA such as Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, Malaysian, Indonesian, Indian, Lebanese etc. I don't expect Ancestry to tell me that my mom from China because I already know that my great great great...grandfathers were originally from there. Since we are the 15th generations, after moving around the world, my mom was not born in China and her ancestors have moved and stayed in so many places.
Not only that Ancestry sent me "create a family tree" free. It is only free for couple of weeks. There is a conditions. Ancestry will auto charge you for an annual fee since they have your credit card from the 1st day you buy the DNA kit from them. I went to email them to unsubscribe it and they did cancel it for me. DO NOT create family tree on ANCESTRY before the DNA result arrives. If you do the family tree, Ancestry will immediately knows who you are. I did not do the family tree for my mom, hence they told me my mom is from China 'cause of her Chinese name. However, my mom is not from China and was not born in China. And my mom has 6 DNA in her proven by MyHeritage DNA.
I went to MyHeritage DNA, it has a breakdown of my mom's DNA including the percentage of her race and ethnicity group. My mom has 6 different DNA in her. And it also includes where she was born and what race and ethnicity group she is. My mom is a mix bred. My brother and I went to MyHeritage DNA without doing our family tree. He lives in Australia and used his son's saliva and I live in Canada and used my saliva, MyHeritage DNA connected me with my brother's son and my mom. Amazing. When I sent my mom and my saliva to MyHeritage DNA, I didn't give the same address and same email, I didn't do family tree before the result because I wanted to make sure that MyHeritage DNA is truthful to our DNA. Yes MyHeritage DNA is.
As for AncestryDNA, no star for them. Very disappointed. I was planning to do my whole family DNA and suggested my friends and relatives to do it too, I change my mind. AncestryDNA is more expensive than MyHeritage DNA. And AncestryDNA does not give a breakdown of our races and ethnicities. It just looks at your name and tell you the country your ancestor from. If you have a Korean name even though you are mix bred, AncestryDNA will tell you, your ancestor from Korea. Why pay AncestryDNA to do that when we already know that.

Ancestry.com has the worst customer service that I have encountered in a company of its size. On several occasions, I have tried to bring to their attention errors and other deficiencies in their online research process, and each effort has been met with indifference and lack of acknowledgement, much less any effort to correct. The most obvious deficiency I have tried to get Ancestry to correct relates to the U.S. Social Security Death Index.
One item of information contained on that document is the descendant's last place of residence. However, when one selects the Death Index for saving onto a tree, Ancestry transforms one's "last place of residence" to one's "place of death." Obviously, one does not have to die at his last place of residence. And, that error in the process has resulted in millions of incorrect entries onto family trees on Ancestry's website. It is such that one cannot rely upon any previous researchers' entries relating to place of death. And, the place of death can be an extremely important and valuable piece of information to an individual researching his ancestry. But, Ancestry.com will not even acknowledge such deficiency on its part, not to mention make any effort to correct it.

Half of my family immigrated through Nova Scotia in the early 1700's. Ancestry does not have access to Nova Scotia data so that just cost me even more money. Then I get a 3 month warning saying they are going to bill my renewal. I didn't select auto renew, because I gave myself 1 yr to see how far I got. Then they emailed me to update my credit card info. Which is really weird, because they still just went ahead and charged my card through PayPal I think.
I called and after an hour they issued me a cancellation and said I would be getting a refund because she could see I haven't accessed my info for months. I wasn't happy with their info either. They only link up members who you've already added to your tree. So if you're hoping to find actual DNA relatives, unless you already know who they are, you're not going to get connected to them. That geo map showing migration patterns over the last 300 years tells me nothing of value. Essentially all it says is that sometime over the last 300 years some people migrated from some parts of Europe to someplace east of the Mississippi River and then some of those people started moving to other places in the USA. That ultra generic kind of info is available free of charge from any library as well as the internet.
I bought their DNA service believing it would tell me something specific about me. NO! And their search engine is also of zero value. The people that I did list as guest never came. I’m confused as to what is going on, if I’m in danger and who these people are.

I was excited to sign up for Ancestry in hopes of finding a means of tracing my family tree. What I found was lack of records even for direct family members still living who would absolutely have all kinds of traceable documentation on them. Ancestry's findings will state false information that grandparents had one child, as an example, when I know for a fact they had more! I signed up for the Europe and Canada trace as well but with little or no evidence of a family member.
At first, I thought this may be due to the region I was searching and possible destruction of records so I decided to search on friends who would absolutely have birth certificates etc. and came up with nothing. I also tried the DNA test and I'm very suspicious about the results. I'm well aware of where most family would've resided but when I found an extended tree via a cousin who was also on Ancestry, I started thinking that the "results" of the DNA test were geared toward the bloodline through her family. Regardless, the results are vague anyways and not all that surprising or interesting. I wish I would've read the reviews before starting this as it's expensive overall.

The problem with Ancestry as I see it is that they want you to pay to access your own information. It goes like this. I naively entered a great deal of my family tree that I acquired the old fashioned way (court, probate, census, marriage, land and military records). This is data that took many years to acquire. Then what does Ancestry do? They send me an email saying they had new info and 'hints' on my family. I thought great, I'll check it out, only to find that they are sending me links to the data I just entered. What's worse is that they now want me to pay to access any corroborating documents. These are the same docs I used to compile my tree! And now, if any long lost relatives stumbles across my tree, they will be required to pay Ancestry for the right to see it. I have no say in the matter. Nice business model. You do the hard work, give it all to Ancestry for nothing and then they charge you and others to see it.
And then we have their DNA tests. All they give you are amorphous, ill-defined geographic regions for your ancestry. No surnames to match against. And even these do not always tally with the traditional genealogy results. For instance, when they say I have 10% Iberian DNA just what does that mean? I can go back 400 years and there's not a single Spaniard or Portuguese in my tree. Then they say I have 0% American Indian DNA, but I have family photos that go back to the mid-1800s that clearly show Indian ancestors. I'm not talking about Indian Princess b.s. either. I don't know what their reference DNA samples are, but they appear to be incomplete and way off.

Now it requires you sign up for Ancestry.com and requires you enter your personal information and that of your immediate ancestors, then it still does not give you access to the government owned original data, I have been doing research for approx. 45 years before internet and now I am blocked at all turns unless I pay a fortune for DNA testing.

My son has been begging me for the past couple of years to buy this for him and I didn't like the cost of it so I kept putting it off. Well, my son saved his money and told me that he will pay for it if I order the kit for him. So, I told him I would look into a little first to make sure it's what you're looking for in results. He wants it for learning about his blood history and finding family members. Unfortunately, this doesn't help too well in that unless other family members out there did the test too. So, I read some more info the website and it can be a tad confusing to understand what you really get with the kit itself (since there are lots of extra add-ons you need to purchase for more info) because it's deceiving.
They have a sale going on for $79 instead of $99 so I thought well I guess I can just try it out and my son will be happy. I was going to buy 2 extra kits (3 total) for my other son and me. After getting to the end of the transaction they ask if you want to add all these other things you'll need to access A-Z... well it's not cheap! So I said nevermind sounds like a little scam to get more money and I thought I didn't complete the transaction since it was asking to add more to my order and I exit out of it. Then a couple minutes later I get an email notification of a charge on my card. So I immediately called customer service to cancel the order and get a refund. They said no problem and canceled my order and said the refund will be issued back in about 7-10 business days. They gave me a verification number of cancelation, so I'm thinking I'm good. Ummm nope!
The next day I get an email stating "Great news–Your AncestryDNA® kit has shipped. Your DNA kit should arrive in 7-10 business days (or earlier if you chose expedited shipping*). It will have everything you need to send your DNA sample back to us, so you can start discovering more about who and where you come from. You can track your package by clicking here..." So, I check it and it doesn't show like it's coming to me, so I'm thinking maybe they started shipping and now it's being shipped back to them, nope, a package arrived about 5 days later with 3 kits inside! Umm, I'm not paying to ship them back nor have tests done!
I never received an email from Ancestry of purchase or cancelation/refund, only email of shipping (weird). So, I checked my credit card and it looks like they credited back my money, but not sure if they are going to recharge me! They shouldn't because it's not like there is anything fancy inside the kit, just a saliva tube, mixture tube to preserve it, a ziplock bag to put it in, and an envelope to mail in the sample. I'm just disappointed because their commercials are deceiving and had my son excited for nothing on top of him knowing the kits arrived and were not doing them.

EVERY ** person in the US is from Europe. #4 - “No other information provided” on me. #5 - The website is purposefully impossible to navigate and find help or contact. (See other reviews). After a half hour of searching I gave up to come on here. Ancestry had a computer problem a couple years ago and accidentally deleted many people in my trees. For the longest time, I couldn't get them to admit any wrongdoing but I finally got an honest person who admitted to me that this did happen and many people were affected. For years, I have tried to get them to rectify this but they say they can't. I have paid the premium price for over a decade and for ancestry to not have a back-up or some way of fixing this very common problem that was initially started by them, is inexcusable. The company knows that they are really the only company available that does this kind of service and they take full advantage of it. They could offer a print option so that you could keep a hard copy of your data but since they want to bleed you for as much money as possible with their various products, i.e., ordering a bound family tree book, etc., they won't do this.
This work has taken me thousands of hours of hard work and now it is corrupted and/or deleted. This is not even acceptable, however, I'm confident that Ancestry will continue this until they are forced not to. I encourage others if you are able to find a way to research your ancestry, try to find anything other than Ancestry to do it with. It may not be as comprehensive initially, but it will save you so much grief and frustration in the long run. Good luck!

I contacted both Newspapers.com and Ancestry.com again and explained the problem. We received a couple of DNA testing kits as a Christmas gift. Although skeptical about the security risks and past poor experience with Ancestry.com's system, we decided to look closely at what the service has to offer. We were shocked when we read about the company's policy to own aspects of the DNA in perpetuity! Add to that the boilerplate language that says if you agree to the testing that information pertinent to your health could be revealed to third parties. NO THANK YOU. And those third parties could be individuals the company has identified as kin, and no, there does not seem to be an opt-out process from this kind of sharing!
Having DNA results "integrated" into their family trees is concerning as well, especially given that their family trees are not that accurate and it appears that anyone with an Ancestry.com membership can log in and add to existing trees. Maybe okay for entertainment purposes, but not for anyone serious about genetic genealogy! Given the understanding that people receive Ancestry's DNA kits as a gift, there should be a swift and simple way to decline participation and return the product, but NO. There is a phone number listed that you can call if you want to return a kit, but you have to know the last four digits of the credit card that it was purchased on! Yeah, right -- like I'm going to ask a family member to give me their credit card number so I can return the gift or give them the aggravation of trying to return it! Calling the specific number for returns as on their website yielded no help at all!
So, we resorted to calling the main information line and waited a very very long time on hold (15 or more minutes maybe?) and spoke with a rep. We explained that we were not comfortable taking the test and wanted a refund. The rep said that they could not look up information on the kit with our name and address (where the kit was mailed) and that to get a refund that the gift giver would have to request the refund! What scammers! How do they get away with this????When I looked further on their website, I also noticed that there appears to be no such thing as a full refund either! If the kit is returned within 30 days, the refund can be in the $50 or $75 dollar range -- after they take out shipping and possibly other fees. If it's over 30 days since the kit was ORDERED --not shipped, mind you, just ORDERED, there is NO REFUND!!!
And, as if that isn't enough bad business practice, think about all these sub-zero temps that have been happening in part of the country. Have the kits been shipped in a climate-controlled manner? I really don't think so. How well does the kit perform once it has been sitting outside in subzero temperatures for 8 to 12 hours???? Who knows? For those who LOVE Ancestry.com and their DNA testing procedures, God Bless You! But be forewarned. My rant is not just an illustration of Chicken Little screaming that the sky is falling. No. But there are SERIOUS security issues to be contemplated. For anyone interested in learning what can happen when DNA is "commercialized" read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." I have been a member of Ancestry since 2000. I have had multiple DNA tests done, which I manage through my account. When I had my father submit his sample, I did not use the administrator option (purely accidental). After receiving his results, and realizing that they identify *me* as the donor, I called to set it straight. I was told they would fix the problem within a couple of weeks. Long story short, I have made several lengthy phone calls over the course of TWO YEARS, and the issue is still not resolved - despite being told REPEATEDLY that it would be "taken care of"! They have told me to "check back in a few weeks", or that they would "contact me to follow up" (never did).
Why doesn't anyone know what they're doing? I have wasted HOURS of my own time trying to chase down a solution. They have offered me a few months' subscription for free, but that doesn't help to fix the issue. What kind of IT department do they have, that can't make this adjustment to the account?? During today's phone call, I was told that the issue can NEVER be fixed... So why have I been strung along for TWO YEARS?! I would have closed my account and started from scratch TWO YEARS AGO, had I been given this information - but they took that option away from me by continually telling me to give them some time to fix it!
Most recently, I purchased a subscription that was to expire October 1st. I saw a charge to my credit card (which was expired, as I was going to use a *different* card when I updated my payment method on the account) for $149. I immediately went online to cancel. Still, when my credit card statement arrived, it showed the $149 charge, so I called Ancestry this morning. What a complete waste of time. I explained that I HAD cancelled online and Sasha explained that I hadn't gone "far enough", as even when you confirm that you DO want to cancel, you have to continue to another page. So, the initial cancellation did not take effect, and she could only issue a cancellation for MARCH 2018 - after all my $149 is exhausted.
I asked Sasha why there was a checkbox with the reason: "I didn't know my subscription was going to renew" when I cancelled online, if this were a unique problem. She indicated that their marketing department is gathering information, but it was not available to her. So, if they're not aware that the auto-renew is a problem, why are they polling cancellations to see who wasn't happy because they "didn't know" it was going to happen?! I asked her what I could have done differently, and she said I would have to have called and actively canceled the subscription, because it automatically renews (no opt-out option offered).
She also indicated that I had checked a "tiny box" (HER WORDS) when I purchased the subscription, stating that I had read the terms/conditions. Yes, I suppose I had - but I just didn't remember seeing the auto-renewal clause. So, despite the fact that I thought I HAD cancelled the subscription online (or so I thought), and I called as soon as I discovered the charge on my statement, I was offered no remedy (how about pro-rating a refund?) It's not like this is a few dollars, and now I have to find some way to pay for this during heating/holiday season!
Why does Ancestry make it SO difficult to cancel a subscription, yet they have no issues taking payment - even by way of EXPIRED credit card! With NO notification that the subscription is expiring, no opting out of automatic renewal, and no pro-rating payment/refunds... Doesn't it seem that there is only ONE thing on Ancestry's mind? The main focus on the whole free page was the life expectancy!!! That tells me that this is very sick. That means any company or person can plug in a last name and see family life expectancy. Why do they post that type of info to anyone who see it... someone's family's life expectancy. You better believe they are selling this data. If you are excited about looking up your family heritage, and there in bold for everyone to see... life expectancy. Why is that even a part of the research? Why is that public information? I am going to see what I can do to stop this. It would be different if the life expectancy was just from long ago but they are publically posting life expectancy as current as 2004. I'm writing in enormous frustration re the inefficiency of your site. Today I tried (yet again) to follow all the advice given to me from your advisors re how to download raw DNA data, this time with an IT Consultant beside me. He like myself is of the opinion that the site is unusable! Please note these random examples of the failures encountered to date: On the very few occasions when I seem to have been finally getting somewhere I just end up with a screen message from you saying that I can't use Ancestry because you are experiencing 'A high volume of traffic' and to try again later.
I'm managing my mother's account and when today her password again didn't work (which I need in order to download her DNA results for her), my partner -the IT consultant - changed it, only for us to then be told when we tried to use it - that the new details were invalid! Tonight I tried to call you, (no answer), the live chat feature is also closed... My previous telephone advisor, although very pleasant did not send a new DNA link although I had explained that the constant delays had resulted in it expiring. What on earth is going on? To be honest had my mother and I known in the first place that downloading DNA is dependent on either the use of a laptop or computer ('ancient' technology - as most people now use iPads!) we would have opted to use a different site for a DNA test.
This dependency on near redundant technology really needs to be plainly stated before people choose to buy your DNA kit. (Do you realize how frustrating it is having constant interruptions to an already seemingly hopeless task, which inform the user that this – or - that needs be updated or installed?). I'd forgotten how laborious laptops were until being expected to use one again just because Ancestry can't deliver DNA results by more modern means. While being given advice that never works I realize that the delays will not only hold up a crucially important search for a lost family member (when in view of my mother's age of 83 this is a race against time) but will of course inevitably just succeed in pushing me over into another monthly subscription payment, when really all we want to do now is unsubscribe.
Footnote to users: the Ancestry DNA test involves spitting copiously into a tube. N.B. Modern DNA test sites now use a swab! Ancestry is just NOT geared up to the service it is selling. Avoid! Perhaps if it stopped spending a fortune on its TV advertising and used the money saved to get it's service up to standard, customers might stand a chance of getting what they paid for.

They are probably selling DNA to research labs and this is a farce to get people's DNA to do research on.

I could cancel at any time in my free trial and not get charged the $35. Well, it's been one month and I just found a $35 charge from them in my account. What the heck?! I have been an Ancestry subscriber for years and I am finding that their searches are getting more and more tedious and difficult. Currently, once you find a census record for a family (not always easy as transcriptions are not always accurate or, in fairness, possible to be accurate because of bad handwriting on the original images), one can often only link in the person who was the query of the search. Sometimes the transcribers did not associate the names on the census pages with the correct families and it is impossible to do multiple names in the family at one time. I am finding this to be true quite often now.
In the past when this happened, one used to be able to go to the image and link people in from the image, but now I find that once I have linked the first person, I am forced to do tedious searches for all of the other members of the family so that I can link them in. If I try to link a different person from the index on the image, I am only allowed to save the image to my computer which is not what I am trying to do. It used to be that when one went to the index on the image and clicked on a different name, one got an option to link the new person into the tree or save to the computer. This option disappeared a long time ago and I have no idea why!!
I am also finding that I frequently have to go to other places like familysearch.org to find a document because sometimes the options for a census search are not even available when I hit the search button for a person in my tree. Once I input more information for the person, I can usually find the record in hints, but honestly, what is the point in doing the search if I am not even going to have access to the right documents. I am finding these problems to be more and more common. I suppose it may be that their search engines are overworked, but for the price we are paying they should fix the problems. Their search engines used to work much better years ago. I don't feel that I am getting good value for my yearly membership on a World subscription. I am not a novice to this site. I have been using it for years and these searches used to work much better.
Recently, I decided not to renew my subscription and I swear it was often as quick to look the records up on other sites and type in the information into my tree on Ancestry. I really like the linking feature and the fact that so many new British records have been added, but after today's terrible search experiences, I am thinking it is not worth the money. Once I laboriously manage to get the new records linked in that currently only appear to be available on Ancestry, I doubt I will be back. I have several months left on my subscription, so perhaps service will improve, but my experiences over the past couple of years are revealing that the search experience is getting worse and worse!
I use Chrome which I read in someone else's message is the search engine they tell one to use. I also have over 10,000 people in my tree, so suppose that may be a problem. Maybe Ancestry searches don't perform well for people who have trees with a lot of people. Anyway, I have been getting more and more frustrated the past couple of years and at this point think I am getting very bad value for my money. I only resubscribed because they were having a sale when I bought a DNA kit. I will never pay full price to join again!!!

Ancestry.com is an absolute rip off. They take your family photos and sell them to places like Pinterest without contacting the family first. Their DNA testing is another worthless item - vague at most. They also allow other members to pilferage your site, swiping family photos, allowing them to contact you & stir up family crap that happened 80 years ago as to who got great grandma's stuff and who did not. They also allow other members to steal your personal data and post it on their fb pages. If I had to do it all over again I would have never made an ancestry page to begin with. It has caused nothing but grief. Stirred up crap that happened years before & also allows Ancestry.com to cash in on all this stuff by selling it to third party vendors.

I pay annual dues for their services over $300 yearly and there are still things I can not get. I can't even use my AARP yearly since I used it 1 time.
The DNA is a great option BUT... as a serious Genealogist you find MANY, MANY people due their DNA because the commercials on TV to see where they come from. When these people match you, you email through Ancestry DNA and you never know if they get it because they do NOT have trees online. I wish Ancestry would have their email information on their information so we can contact them directly. I understand possibly some people may not want to be found, but there are other issues involved as well. Have it marked on ALL DNA RESULTS how that person is related, maternal/paternal would also help us with these people.
On the hints, there are many that are 'GREY OUT' and you can't delete them from your hints. They say they have been working on that. It is been a year. Hmmm... how good are their computer techs? Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of good from Ancestry but their customer service hangs up on you, you can't hear them or they don't pick up. I truly recommend you download your RAW DNA from Ancestry and put on a free service GEDMATCH.COM. Very medical but you get people's emails to contact them and you find matches.
Also FAMILYTREEDNA.COM buy their kits and do your DNA with them too. I am just starting to use it, very medical again, but it will pay off. SUGGESTION... use your same login name from Ancestry on these accounts so when people are researching they will remember you from Ancestry and so on. ANCESTRY.COM.. I used Ancestry.com briefly many years ago doing genealogical research because I was given a free 30 day trial. I actually did most of my research by visiting the LDS church in Salt Lake City, and Federal archives (microfilm) in my area. Ancestry.com did not really provide much information for me that I did not already have from my research. For the beginning researcher it provided some good background information on family history, regional history, that kind of thing. I recall the interface being easy, and it was fun, like opening a big box filled with unknown treasures. It had access (at that time) to some of the census rolls, which was great info that I normally had to struggle with, and also some ship rolls as well, although I don't think I found the information on the main immigrant ship that I was seeking.
When I used it, it was not as in depth as I would have liked it to be, but I think it is good for most researchers. It definitely is a time saver, especially for those who are starting out in their research. I had a trial a very long time ago, about the time it came out. I did build a family tree but had already done so from my previous research. I did not use the AncestryDNA as that is a newer creation, but my uncle did so. He discovered that in some distant past we had Native American blood in our veins -- which was not reflected on the official family tree. Kind of cool, that. I would like to do the AncestryDNA now that the science is better, and hope to do so before much longer.

There was only a couple of small things that I didn't like about Ancestry.com. First, the "registration" process was a very time consuming process. But although the sign up process took longer than finding my family tree, it was a relatively user friendly experience. Second was the fact that you could only get so much information as a guest and you had to pay to get the rest of the information, but I understand why it's set up that way. It distresses me how much money it costs, i.e., it's more money than just having the U.S. membership. I don't really understand why there should be more money charged for searching outside the U.S. for ancestors when our country isn't all that old.

I own a membership. I'm a DAR volunteer genealogist and I use it for research for others. Before it was available, I had to visit libraries, cemeteries, courthouses etc.. Now I am able to most research from my home computer and not having to travel for basic family research. I wish Ancestry would develop a program that could be used in schools that would introduce children to do family history. How much more I would have appreciated Am. History if I had known family members arrived on the Mayflower, fought in the REV WAR and the hardships they endured. It makes me realize how easy my life has been. Also, I have visited, with my grandchildren, the places my ancestors lived and tell them the stories I have learned so they can learn and appreciate Am. History.
I also like sharing and connecting with other family members. There are always new members who connect with my family who add info on family history that I otherwise not know. Sharing pictures and family stories are great. My husband and I have meet with other family members that we would not have known without this website. I have done the DNA test and I am sorry that many on the DNA test group that connect with do not do a family tree or have theirs locked so we can connect. The mystery continues. I respect their privacy but how much they are missing out on.

Be careful when purchasing ancestry.com subscription. Purchased a month and then I went in and purchased a six month subscription on my account. They charged me for the six month and another month. When I called them to get my credit for that month charge they double charged me. They would extend me another month... So I explained to them that was the purpose why I went in to do six month so I wouldn't get charged for the month service. I then decided since I wasn't get my credit I cancelled both subscription charges.

I use my own account and I'm about to send the DNA sample to them this weekend. Hoping when they are done with it they will come back with some good news. I can't wait to see exactly where I come from and what I am made up of. It's very exciting to do this and I will wait very anxiously to see the results. I like that they are going to help find my ancestors. I have always wondered about my bloodline. I think it's awesome and a real neat thing they have and are doing something like this for the people. I'm sure others will tell you that as well.

I used my late Uncle's account when I was visiting him. I have an ever expanding family tree but have not been able to use the DNA service. I am hoping to be able to have my analysis done for my birthday this year. I wish I had more time to spend on Ancestry. They have things available that you would have had to travel all over the world to reference not that many years ago. About 20 years ago, I spent one day a week for three months searching for one of my ancestors in the Fort Wayne, IN library. I gave up when I didn't find any information. Now the information is available through Ancestry.
I like that Ancestry is a good starting point for the neophyte family history researcher. The site is easy to use and it offers success as opposed to frustration. But I dislike the increased cost of membership. My family is on a fixed income and the cost is not something I can afford to pay at this point. A lot of the information can be found using other sites if you have the time to do the research.

I spent a lot of time in the past trying to find my biological parentage and/or roots by going online in my cousin's account and by using the adoption agency and ultimately a search company that advertised on Ancestry.com's website. I have long since given up trying to trace my ancestry but when I was doing it I tried to build a family tree with the software program he sent me. Unfortunately I did not have enough information to get very far with my biological roots and my adoptive lineage was much more detailed. The results alas were disastrously disappointing though interesting through no fault of the website.
Ancestry.com is probably the most comprehensive site to use for genealogy drawing from myriad sources and archives that enable most people to draw a good search path. But one thing that troubled me was that most of the source focus was on American genealogy and I was born in Canada and that made the choices much more limited. Of course the website cannot archive sources that are not available and that was a lot of the problem with Canadian ancestral information.

I created a semi tree with what info I could find. I had a 15 day trial and used that to find out what I did. I was able to find 1 side of my family and find the lineage that I didn't know even existed. It was a good start to give me some basic info to continue my search of both sides of the family. I also got to learn where a lot of my family was based so I can go to those areas for more detailed info. Also gave me names of older family that I can connect with on social media. Overall, it was a fun and exciting experience. However, I had issues with the 2 side of my family. Since there was adoptions I was not able to follow past my dads parents. It left a lot of my history still unknown... also some of the info that I did find, was very unsupported or supported with just shreds of info, often making me question the connection to my family. I didn't use the DNA service yet but its been a plan of mine for awhile, I was just wanting to get more details before I did.

I started out with Ancestry.com because at the time, it was brand new. I thought it was great! When I first opened my account, it was relatively difficult to get used to the way the website worked but after a few times, I got used to it. Their website was fairly easy to navigate as well. All of the information that I previously acquired took forever because I had to go from place to place in order to obtain it but with their website, everything was in one place. I am currently still working on my family tree, which is coming along pretty well.
I liked the fact that I could access the information whenever I had the time, unlike going to the library or courthouse during certain days and hours. I have my own membership because of my busy schedule, I needed something I could use at my leisure (ex. Late evenings and weekends). The only thing that I disliked about it was the price. I haven't used the DNA services due to the costs involved, but would possibly consider it in the future if the cost was discounted enough. I'm still fairly new to this process. Sometimes their website would also freeze up, however, that rarely happened.

The specific things I like about Ancestry.com are the searches are very detailed and the response time is fast. They also do very well with the searching of your family tree and I also like the dna testing so I know exactly my origin. The most I dislike about Ancestry.com is the price of membership especially with the dna samples. The lowest price memberships don't give you a thorough research so you have to spend more to get the results your looking for which in my opinion is ridiculous.

Ancestry was fairly helpful. Allowed me access to resources online and easily that would've taken a lot more effort for me to locate on my own. I like the family tree function and seeing it build on its own. I think the website is very user friendly. I think that the ability to go between different menus is very helpful. The user interface is also very easy to navigate. I think the cost per month is exorbitant. I initially used a trial membership but once I believed it was too expensive I cancelled it and started using my mother's. We have a family tree and I like researching it. I would've remained on longer as a paid member to get access to materials if it hadn't been so expensive and even a yearly membership would be worth it if halved.

Other than that my experience has been very good. I like the fact it offers a lot of different ways to find my ancestors. It's fairly easy to navigate and pulls up a lot of interesting possibilities. I haven't used the AncestryDNA as yet, but I am planning on it. What is aggravating is not knowing how to locate ancestors that are buried in private church cemeteries, or private graveyards.

I was using Ancestry and still have my information and tree available, however, I was unable to pay consistently and let my membership lapse. But it was a very interesting and informative experience. I learned many things about my family lineage and will probably renew my membership off and on in the future. If, in the future, I am able to upgrade my membership to include Europe, I'm sure I will be able to better check the information I have found so far and find out much more about my lineage. I like being able to cross-check information with public records, etc. I saw a few photos of family members I had never seen before.
However, if I wasn't careful, I could choose a wrong ancestor by looking at and connecting other people's family trees to mine. Some dates and names just didn't jive, so I wasn't always sure if a person was actually my ancestor. For instance, a member of German royalty appeared to be a distant grandmother of mine, but when I looked her up via internet information, she had no children. People need to be very careful about that type of thing.

I purchased my own membership for a few months. I used Ancestry to trace my lineage and to research other friends' family lines. I was able to trace my family back to colonists and then to England, information I did not know. The site had real documents I could view, which was helpful. I also learned the ship family came to America on. I learned famous relatives, which was neat. I did build my family tree and got the information I set out to explore. Once I learned that, the site was not needed anymore.
I was happy with the information provided and the ease of use. I liked how once I entered my grandparents' names, the rest of my tree and lineage had already been done and I just had to hook up to my family tree. That cut down on a more of research time that I might have had to spend looking for records to find their parents' names. However, on my mother's side, they had very few Mexican records for people whose trees originated in Mexico. Also, I could not keep the membership once I had the info I needed and justify paying monthly. Maybe a flat fee would be a better way to charge.

My experience has been fair. I like looking through old records and at some of the old phone books used to help identify people. I have my own membership and I am building a family tree slowly. I search when I have free time. I learned some things about my ancestry but I would like to be able to trace my ancestors back to the early 1800's. My search seems harder once I go out of the 1900's. It takes time and it is hard because the last names sometimes do not match exactly. Because when you have a lot of people with the same last name you have to keep working until you narrow it down because you want to be sure that it is the right person. The names are harder to connect unless you have the correct spelling of the last name. But I am going to take my time and try to connect the people. I like the way people are added to your family tree. Once you find one member of your family tree it should be easier to find the next person. The new website is harder and more confusing to use than the older one. I also hate that they have discontinued the disc version a month after I spent $40 for it. It's also too expensive. Lots of records missing that they should have for the money. I have to wait until they have a sale and can never afford international version. I have the US version.
I use it to research my pedigree. It's a decent source of records and they keep updating them. I pay no attention to other people's research. I'd rather do my own. Others can be flawed and mess me up. When I run out of new hints and documentation I branch off to other lines of my extended family. I have an extensive family line traced back far enough that I don't think there would be any new info or surprises. I use it during the day every week or so to see what's new. Ancestry definitely has the biggest collection of genealogical material and the most users to connect with. I have an account with them but only pay for a short-term subscription every few years since it is all I can afford. Since I first started using the site in 2002, it has become much easier to work with and add information to my personal family tree since they started using the "hints" and letting you transfer information quickly to your tree by doing side-by-side comparisons of the data with the people in your own tree. The cost is what makes it most difficult for me to use. I can only afford short subscriptions every few years. I recently took advantage of the half-price six-month subscription, and that has been great.
I am a contributor to two family member's trees at all times. I currently have my own short-term subscription as well. When I don't have a subscription of my own, I check my family member's trees every so often when I receive e-mails from Ancestry letting me know that new things have been added. With my short-term subscription, I am in the process of building a partial family tree.
