I have been endeavoring to secure a refund of $158.54 since 17 Sep 2020. In spite of the many promises which I have been given by Customer Service representatives, that refund is still not forthcoming. Last Wednesday, 14 Oct 2020, I spoke with a Customer Service representative named Bianca, as well as a supervisor whose name was Jennifer. They agreed to refund my money in full instead of the partial refund of $48.00 which I had been originally promised because it had taken nearly a month for them to refund my money. This morning, Oct 20, 2020, I spoke with a Customer Service employee named Jason who told me that no paperwork in making this refund had yet taken place but that he would put it through without delay. I no longer believe in the credibility of these individuals. While Jason was very nice, I can no longer believe what I am being told by the members of that organization. Their actions speak louder than their words.

My grandson gave me a kit for Christmas and I went through the painful process of doing the spit test and sending in. I thought it would be interesting because I have published a well documented book on my ancestry which is 100% accurate back to 1658. Received results. They were not even close. I believe if I had spelled my name differently... The results would have been totally different.

I sent in my kit and was very excited to get the results. What a disappointment. My results were unlike any I have ever seen. I have seen a pie cut into percentages, with each section representing a labelled country. I received one circle which said on top 100% European Jewish. I've never seen any other results like that. I didn't ask what religion I came from, I wanted to know the countries. When I clicked on the result it just listed some Eastern European countries. None of which I know for certain my ancestors were from. It also mentioned Israel. None of my family ever came from the Middle East. I think they are a bunch of bigots who recognized my Jewish heritage and stopped right there. Again, I didn't ask for my religion. I wanted to know the countries my ancestors were from. They didn't even list Austria and that side was there for many generations. A scam!

Because I have a account myself and have done this without issue. I am assuming my computer is blocking the new activation, okay, no problem. Let me tell you, I tried to chat online. It is automated and keeps asking, "How can I help?" Tried 3 times, now I have been on hold for 30 minutes. So frustrated. Just got home from work. Mom wants me to help her set up an account. This is turning into a 2 hour project. Go to the competition, I planned on getting my whole family on board with the DNA thing. Thinking I should cut my losses and go to the competition. No customer service anymore!!! So sad!! Now it is 36 minutes...REALLY!!! I am a nurse and have had a very stressful day! Not that that matters. Just venting at this point....okay, 45 minutes!! Again, customer service admitted they prematurely emailed health results, took them away, different reps asked me repeatedly since early March to supply screenshots and explanations, while I get no explanations and no product that I paid for. My ancestors are in the Museum of the Native American & have been pictured in ALL of the Jamestown reenactments but Ancestry shows Zero Native blood even though their database says my ancestors are from Indian Town Virginia. The site will list the same person as the sibling 3 times & has no way to join together data from once it makes a mistake. Instead if I delete one of the duplicates it sometimes deletes them all. Will not link them all but will delete them all. Frustrating!!!! The site will not link other family member trees. If you chose a family member to link to the site will not allow you to go back to check other family trees once you picked 1 you like. So you have to hand enter every single person already linked by others.

They also have ThruLines now but they don't simply give you all the DNA ThruLines for your family. If the DNA Proves we are related we should have access to all of that data if we chose to link to it. Ancestry wants a lot of money for very little service & you must do a lot of work over many months to accumulate basic info that is already linked in the database. They do this to take more of your time & money. Too expensive for what they provide. My daughter could not link her account to mine for 2 years even though I paid for her to join at the same time I did. Once I chose a Free account, then they suddenly figured out how to link Mother/Daughter TODAY, 3/17/2020 because & stated that as one of many reason I decided to stop paying them.

Now they are saying they have better data but it is less accurate than it was last year. They decreased my Native percentage & moved them to Mexico when I am a cousin of Pocahontas, a Powhatan Virginian Indian. My grandmother was given a Federal Government job because she was at least 25% American Indian but still Ancestry says that side of the family has NO Indian even though the census record listed them as Indian, then changed them to Mulatto. If they need more data on what Native DNA looks like they need to check my family! They recognize Cherokee from my mother's DNA but nothing from my father which if at least 20% Native from 4 great grandparents.

First I tried the DNA test, and the first results came back as expected, I am many German. Then they revised the results, now I'm English, something that would shock my half German grandmother. Being interested in my family history I signed up for a premium version of this site. Big mistake. It is almost impossible to clearly search for an ancestor. Even when you set for an exact search, most of the time nothing shows up even though if you broaden the search suddenly your ancestor shows up. Or, as in one case I traced an ancestor to Central Indiana in 1936. It is known she was in California in 1967, but cannot be found.

And other cases, two great uncles, brothers, an entry by someone not in the family failed to include their youngest sister, who happened to be my grand mother. And a first cousin once removed was listed as have only one daughter, born in 1947. The other, born in 1951 and a high school classmate fails to show. And the original poster do not correct the date when pointed out the them. If the annual fee was $25.00 this site might be worth the price. However $198.00 a year it robbery. I did cancel my account before being charged.

It was Black Friday, I was video calling my family and we started talking about our heritage. My family has mixed appearances, some have blue eyes, very light skin while others have darker skins and brown/honey eyes. So we wondered what origins we had. I went online to look for a DNA test and found this was on 50% sale. I said to myself: why the hell not. Then I got it and got my entire family a bit hyped about it. I know some 700 years back in my family's history. We are Middle Eastern, my father's side came from the region of Syria/Lebanon/Palestine. Neither my father's nor mother's side has any history (AT ALL) remotely related to anything in Africa. Anyone with any basic knowledge about history knows how the area has one of the most mixed races on the entire planet given how many wars and migrations happened to and from the area. Therefore, a DNA test would be extremely helpful to breakdown what your DNA carries... Or so I've thought.

The results came in and it says 98% Middle East and 2% Senegal (seriously). I was shocked when I first viewed it. I started looking for good 1 hour before I realized that was all they provided. Yes, they have over 800 locations to "scan" against in Europe, and yet still mark the ENTIRE MIDDLE EAST as ONE GEOLOGICAL region. Yes, the most racially mixed region of the world is considered as ONE ETHNICITY. The Senegal part was shocking at first, then I read that they actually slip in African results in many DNA test takers, so they probably decided to do so for me. I mean, I wouldn't be shocked if it actually gave anything that's remotely possible, but Senegal? Really? I'm a Middle Eastern guy who paid $60 (tax and shipping included) to be told I am... Middle Eastern. At best this is a scam. Stay away and I hope this review keeps anyone reading it from getting scammed like I was.

Well, today I came very close to ending my membership with Ancestry.com. I have been a customer since the very beginning. Just so you all know-currently when you share a tree on the platform within Ancestry.com, it probably is not going to the person you want to share with. Over the past 10 days I shared 10 trees-some of them the same tree, some of them different trees. NO ONE, not one got an invite from Ancestry.com to join the tree. NOT ONE.

On Saturday I spent 90 minutes on hold trying to get it resolved (I help a lot of people get started on their trees, and I use ancestry to share it-usually its easy that way. Especially if they have DNA there). After waiting on hold for 90 minutes-customer service disconnected me. On Monday I tried the corporate office-no one answering the phone there on Monday (Columbus Day must be an observed Holiday in the corp offices). So TODAY I was going to get through. (IN between I had emailed, and messaged via facebook-got some seriously comical responses too).

Today I got a human-Brea-she had no comprehension of the issue and could not grasp the problem-so she put me on hold for 35 minutes and disappeared and finally disconnected me. So I called back (fuming this time) and I got Austin. Went through the issue for the 25th time- he looked at the account and said it wasn't possible!! REALLY people? I pay for the World Access Account, $400 annually. I think I am at my breaking point. Maybe its time to delete my trees and go to a company that actually wants my business. Does anyone else feel this way?

Their idea of customer service is to ignore their customers and hope they go away. They don't respond to Facebook messenger in a viable time, they have no escalation resolution team at customer service, if you have had an issue in the past before-now they are happy to tell you "we can cancel your service is you are not happy". What they don't tell you is that they will keep a copy of all your research available on their website. YES-YOUR DATA.

I would think they would want subscribers to let them know when things aren't working so that the engineers can FIX the problem. But alas they prefer to bury their heads in their screens and hope the customers go away. After nearly 22 years with ancestry.com I think its time to move on. They do not care about their customer. THey only want your DNA-which they do sell your mass data to the bio tech firms. Ancestry has lost their focus. And I am very sad to say that.

When I called them to inquire, I was told that they did not have enough samples in their database to do such a breakdown. I suggested that they should tell prospective customers that they could not provide detailed analysis for middle eastern individuals. I also asked for a refund. They would not admit that they should inform individuals of their limitations and refused to provide me a refund because they "had sent the results". When I pointed out that what they sent was no better than telling someone they were 100% European, they just recited the refund policy again. Very disappointing and in my opinion fraudulent.

I paid for 3 test. 1 me 2 wife 3 daughter, my test came in first. I had over 1000 cousins all but a handful have nothing in common. Never heard of any last name of family members. But by then my wife's DNA test came in and what a surprise we are 5 to 8 cousins not true. Then my daughter test comes in and we are not a match. My wife is my cousin, and my daughter and me not related. Cannot be true, I have my tree back to the 1800's. This part is true. DNA is a joke on us. Don't pay for it.

My husband has had a paid family tree on Ancestry.com for many years. In 2007 I added details to my entry and many additional family members with photos and details. At Christmas time, he did the DNA test. Then Ancestry offered him the opportunity to order more DNA kits. We ordered one for me. The surprise was that I have to pay another $45 per month to own my own account and have the same level of access that we already have through his account.

Ancestry.com has used the details and photos that I posted on his family tree and now many "relatives" now have essentially been sold the access to my data, but I cannot even get to it without subscribing! I called customer service and was told that it was in the fine print somewhere that I would not get a real DNA result, only matches and that I had to subscribe to copy any hints that I had already built on my portion of my husband's tree! I was essentially out of luck. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT, Ancestry.com! I'm surprised there isn't a class action suit against you for this already.

I was very excited about Ancestry DNA a couple of years ago when I purchased the kit and got to know where my ancestors came from. At that time, I got 81% Finnish (no surprise at all), 7% Irish, 5% Scandinavian, 3% Western European, 2% Eastern European, 1% South Asian and less than 1% Central Asian. All so exciting, right? These fraction percentages made it quite interesting as most of us already have some idea where our families come from. It is the smaller percentages that make the test worthwhile. Now, with the very much praised ‘System Update’ all the results were diluted and rounded up making the test less accurate. This rounding up was supposed to be an improvement claiming that as more people (millions!) had the test done and their results were entered into the global database that would somehow make the test more ‘accurate’. The opposite is true.

The whole point behind a DNA analysis is to prove how UNIQUE a person is and all of this should be based on their individual test result and nothing else! When you start comparing somebody’s sample to thousands of other samples in the database, you’ll get a rounded up, watered down result, and this is completely contrary to the whole philosophy behind ‘everybody’s uniqueness’. With this new system, millions of people are herded into their mainstream national gene pools and everything else is discarded. Then, why not just look at a map and say you are 100% the nationality of the country you come from! It would be a lot cheaper than paying for the test, that’s for sure.

Now, with the system update in place, I find I am 98% Finnish, 1% Irish and 1% Scandinavian and everything else is forgotten. Thank you Ancestry for ruining your test and disappointing millions of people who participated! I want to give you an example of your screwup. In my own original test, I was very intrigued about my 7% Irish heritage because it is not a known fact in my family. My mother does not have it (proven by her test), so I knew this had to come from my father’s side. My father has passed away, so I had my aunt (his sister) do the Ancestry DNA instead and the disappointing result was that she is 100% Finnish!!! Had my aunt done the test prior to the system update, it is possible there could have been some more interesting results. As of now, I don’t recommend Ancestry DNA for anybody anymore. Just look at the map and the country of your origin, and that’s your DNA too...100%.

I believe that most subscribers are not aware that they do not retain ownership of the records they download. It seems you must maintain their expensive subscription in order to view your records. So If you plan to eventually hand off the research to a family member you are obligating them to renew the subscription if they want to see your work and/or continue it. I assume this policy is explained somewhere but I could not find it and they are not upfront about it. I was given an Ancestry DNA kit as a Christmas gift in December of 2018. As instructed in the directions, I registered the kit on an account I opened and mailed the kit in the first week in January 2019. I never heard back about the progress or receipt by Ancestry so I call them on 2/6/19. I spoke to a customer service rep named Matt. After a half hour of fumbling and lack of knowledge, Matt finally located the kit number I provided. He told me that Ancestry personnel had entered my email address incorrectly on his end. He said it was an error on their part and could not be corrected because of the way their program was designed. So he said he would mail me a new kit. We doubled checked the shipping information to make sure they had the correct name and address.

On 2/11/19, not having received the kit, I called again and spoke to Brenda. She told me it would take 7 to 10 days to receive it. I gave her the original kit number and asked her to check the date Matt mailed it out. As before, after about 30 minutes of being put on hold and fumbling back and forth, she told me she couldn’t find any record of it being sent. Once again I gave her all the shipping information and she said she would send out a replacement kit that same day.

On 2/25/19, guess what. Still no kit received. I called again and spoke to Crystal. Another 30 minutes or so, after explaining everything again, Crystal told me they had no record of a kit being sent to me. I asked to speak to a supervisor. Crystal balked, but put me on hold until one was available. Another 15 minutes went by and Crystal was back telling me the supervisor was still busy, but she would send another kit out. We carefully went over the shipping details. She said it would be shipping that day and after waiting another 5 to 10 minutes she provided me a confirmation number.

Today is 3/11/19. Yup you are correct, still no kit. I called again today hoping I would be able to talk to a supervisor. The recording said there would be at least a 30 minute wait to speak to a customer rep. I had other things to do. By the way, I gave all this information to Ancestry in an email survey. Gave them 1 star saying I would never recommend them to a friend. The automated survey responded to the 1 star and asked why. I explained it and have never heard back from them. Same zero response from an email I sent through their website to customer service.

Ancestry needs to let customers know when they are purchasing DNA kits that they will be charged $25 for their materials if they have to seek a refund of their DNA kits. I purchased 3 kits. Got one free for Christmas gifts. No one wanted to share their DNA so I called to get a refund. First they only gave a refund for two of the three kits, as stated because my third would be considered the free one, but they were actually charging me for restocking fees for each kit of $25.00 without my knowledge which I later found out. So, my refund was for about $118.00 which I paid $201.00 with shipping and handling fees. And get this, they told me to throw the kits away instead of returning them! So, I charged sneakingly for restocking fees, but If you ask me that is not restocking!

The next day, I called to get a refund of the fourth one, the one I was charged for since I returned 3 kits the day before and was only refunded for two of those. The person that I gifted it to also felt uncomfortable about sharing their DNA. So, when I asked for a refund they told me they already gave me a refund for three. I told them no, I was only refund for two. We went round and round about this.

I talked to supervisor, who did refund me my full amount of $201.00 as a courtesy. She explained the restocking fee policy. I stated to her that they need to let customers know when they purchase these kits that they will be charged a $25.00 fee if they return them. I don't want to be told this while trying to return them. Also, the supervisor stated the $25.00 is for their materials that customers do have to pay when they are asking for a refund. They just say restocking fee, but I'm still confused because I have to pay $25.00 for their materials that they asked me to throw away! The kit was not opened. I could have returned it, but they did not want them, but wanted me to pay $25.00 for them! Nevertheless, I was refunded my full amount. I was very sorry for the transaction as I did not know they don't accept them back. But, want you to pay $25.00 if you ask for a refund. I got the free trial, right around Christmas. I was going to cancel it prior to them charging me for the subscription. I ended up getting really sick and completely missed the end date. Because of this, I was charged $35.

So, I reached out to Ancestry in hopes of fixing this. I knew from reading the terms and conditions that they won’t refund a monthly subscription- but, I thought that since I didn’t plan on using the subscription, I could be refunded and go on. No, this did not happen. Marie, Darcy, Doria, and Yewande have been the four customer service employees to contact me so far about this case. Darcy first informed me that they couldn’t refund me, due to me having bought a monthly subscription. I understood that, and explained why I was wanting the refund. Doria simply repeated what I was already told, just worded differently.

Lastly, Yewande told me that they “[I] made some searched on my account on January 2nd, 2019”, and again repeated that I couldn’t have a refund. So it appears that if you make a simple search while under a monthly subscription, you will not be refunded. I am disappointed. I tried to cancel which must be done 2 days before the 14-day trial ends and if trying to cancel online you have to push a bunch of buttons and fill out surveys and then still don't complete the cancel. I tried canceling by phone and got disconnected twice. The third time I waited over 20 minutes and spoke to someone who said there was no record of me canceling until today and that since the trial period was over that the $44.99 monthly subscription is non-refundable. I purchased an ancestry kit from Ancestry.com early in 2018. I waited for almost two months after sending my sample in, only to find out that they "lost" my sample. They then sent me another kit. After receiving the "results" from sample they told me I was 60% British, 10% Scotch/Irish, and the rest was "European". I was terribly disappointed in the one page, color-laden map document that told me nothing. My relatives were German, Scottish, and Armenian. No mention of my Armenian ancestors in the report was amazing to me, because my son took a 23&Me test and was identified as having that genetic value. Ancestry.com is a money maker for certain Utah-based organizations, and their focus is NOT on accuracy, but only on volume. Don't waste your money or time with them, only to receive generalized, non-specific results!

September 2018, I sent in my mom's DNA to Ancestry. Since my mom has a Chinese name, the DNA came back saying that from China Originally, she was not born in China and China has 56 different kind of Chinese. There was no breakdown of which race she is. It seems that Ancestry looks at your name and make a final decision to tell you which country your ancestry are from, not which race and ethnicity we are from. Example if you have a Japanese name and you were not born in Japan, and you are a mix bred, Ancestry will tell you that you are from Japan because you have a Japanese name.

Why do we pay Ancestry so much to do the test, is to know the breakdown of our DNA such as Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Filipino, Malaysian, Indonesian, Indian, Lebanese etc. I don't expect Ancestry to tell me that my mom from China because I already know that my great great great...grandfathers were originally from there. Since we are the 15th generations, after moving around the world, my mom was not born in China and her ancestors have moved and stayed in so many places.

Not only that Ancestry sent me "create a family tree" free. It is only free for couple of weeks. There is a conditions. Ancestry will auto charge you for an annual fee since they have your credit card from the 1st day you buy the DNA kit from them. I went to email them to unsubscribe it and they did cancel it for me. DO NOT create family tree on ANCESTRY before the DNA result arrives. If you do the family tree, Ancestry will immediately knows who you are. I did not do the family tree for my mom, hence they told me my mom is from China 'cause of her Chinese name. However, my mom is not from China and was not born in China. And my mom has 6 DNA in her proven by MyHeritage DNA.

I went to MyHeritage DNA, it has a breakdown of my mom's DNA including the percentage of her race and ethnicity group. My mom has 6 different DNA in her. And it also includes where she was born and what race and ethnicity group she is. My mom is a mix bred. My brother and I went to MyHeritage DNA without doing our family tree. He lives in Australia and used his son's saliva and I live in Canada and used my saliva, MyHeritage DNA connected me with my brother's son and my mom. Amazing. When I sent my mom and my saliva to MyHeritage DNA, I didn't give the same address and same email, I didn't do family tree before the result because I wanted to make sure that MyHeritage DNA is truthful to our DNA. Yes MyHeritage DNA is.

As for AncestryDNA, no star for them. Very disappointed. I was planning to do my whole family DNA and suggested my friends and relatives to do it too, I change my mind. AncestryDNA is more expensive than MyHeritage DNA. And AncestryDNA does not give a breakdown of our races and ethnicities. It just looks at your name and tell you the country your ancestor from. If you have a Korean name even though you are mix bred, AncestryDNA will tell you, your ancestor from Korea. Why pay AncestryDNA to do that when we already know that.

On several occasions, I have tried to bring to their attention errors and other deficiencies in their online research process, and each effort has been met with indifference and lack of acknowledgement, much less any effort to correct. The most obvious deficiency I have tried to get Ancestry to correct relates to the U.S. Social Security Death Index.

One item of information contained on that document is the descendant's last place of residence. However, when one selects the Death Index for saving onto a tree, Ancestry transforms one's "last place of residence" to one's "place of death." Obviously, one does not have to die at his last place of residence. And, that error in the process has resulted in millions of incorrect entries onto family trees on Ancestry's website. It is such that one cannot rely upon any previous researchers' entries relating to place of death. And, the place of death can be an extremely important and valuable piece of information to an individual researching his ancestry. But, Ancestry.com will not even acknowledge such deficiency on its part, not to mention make any effort to correct it.

That geo map showing migration patterns over the last 300 years tells me nothing of value. I first opened the account in 2008 just looking to search for family members. Grandparents I stop off and on pick back up when I would get more info. I met a family members that had info on my father sister. That threw me off way off by some years. I even let her be a guest and use it. Last month thing got crazy. I used another site which was 14 day trial and call this person to share the extra information. To be added to what we had. Waited all day. They meaning person never call me back as promised. So I call person. No answer. So I attempted to get back online because I had shared where I was with this person and I was completely shut out of the site I had just created. I was in shock... Well I searched my mind. I call them back. Still no answer. I block them from Ancestry account, and any getting in touch with me. I was at a loss for what happened still is.

On 4/11/2018 I was just putting the finishing touches on info I had research away in a shoebox inside Ancestry. I was assured that with all new passwords

No one could enter. For one it never cross my mind I was in danger. The only thing up until that point was trust. Around 3 AM I was up on the date posted finishing up for figure two I saw clear came through Into the Ancestry tree and clean all the information I store and saved. Sound forfeited. I know all my info was compromised. I have called so many times to Ancestry. I've reported it to the police three times. Last straw was yesterday. I don’t understand what is going on or why. I saw the other two people. They go in as private. I have no security And I’m told it’s hard to prove. I ask the rep to close that account and take it out my name. And refund my money. The people that I did list as guest never came. I’m confused as to what is going on, if I’m in danger and who these people are.

I was excited to sign up for Ancestry in hopes of finding a means of tracing my family tree. What I found was lack of records even for direct family members still living who would absolutely have all kinds of traceable documentation on them. Ancestry's findings will state false information that grandparents had one child, as an example, when I know for a fact they had more! I signed up for the Europe and Canada trace as well but with little or no evidence of a family member.

At first, I thought this may be due to the region I was searching and possible destruction of records so I decided to search on friends who would absolutely have birth certificates etc. and came up with nothing. I also tried the DNA test and I'm very suspicious about the results. I'm well aware of where most family would've resided but when I found an extended tree via a cousin who was also on Ancestry, I started thinking that the "results" of the DNA test were geared toward the bloodline through her family. Regardless, the results are vague anyways and not all that surprising or interesting. I wish I would've read the reviews before starting this as it's expensive overall.

The problem with Ancestry as I see it is that they want you to pay to access your own information. It goes like this. I naively entered a great deal of my family tree that I acquired the old fashioned way (court, probate, census, marriage, land and military records). This is data that took many years to acquire. Then what does Ancestry do? They send me an email saying they had new info and 'hints' on my family. I thought great, I'll check it out, only to find that they are sending me links to the data I just entered. What's worse is that they now want me to pay to access any corroborating documents. These are the same docs I used to compile my tree! And now, if any long lost relatives stumbles across my tree, they will be required to pay Ancestry for the right to see it. I have no say in the matter. Nice business model. You do the hard work, give it all to Ancestry for nothing and then they charge you and others to see it.

And then we have their DNA tests. All they give you are amorphous, ill-defined geographic regions for your ancestry. No surnames to match against. And even these do not always tally with the traditional genealogy results. For instance, when they say I have 10% Iberian DNA just what does that mean? I can go back 400 years and there's not a single Spaniard or Portuguese in my tree. Then they say I have 0% American Indian DNA, but I have family photos that go back to the mid-1800s that clearly show Indian ancestors. I'm not talking about Indian Princess b.s. either. I don't know what their reference DNA samples are, but they appear to be incomplete and way off.

My son has been begging me for the past couple of years to buy this for him and I didn't like the cost of it so I kept putting it off. Well, my son saved his money and told me that he will pay for it if I order the kit for him. So, I told him I would look into a little first to make sure it's what you're looking for in results. He wants it for learning about his blood history and finding family members. Unfortunately, this doesn't help too well in that unless other family members out there did the test too. So, I read some more info the website and it can be a tad confusing to understand what you really get with the kit itself (since there are lots of extra add-ons you need to purchase for more info) because it's deceiving.

They have a sale going on for $79 instead of $99 so I thought well I guess I can just try it out and my son will be happy. I was going to buy 2 extra kits (3 total) for my other son and me. After getting to the end of the transaction they ask if you want to add all these other things you'll need to access A-Z... well it's not cheap! So I said nevermind sounds like a little scam to get more money and I thought I didn't complete the transaction since it was asking to add more to my order and I exit out of it. Then a couple minutes later I get an email notification of a charge on my card. So I immediately called customer service to cancel the order and get a refund. They said no problem and canceled my order and said the refund will be issued back in about 7-10 business days. They gave me a verification number of cancelation, so I'm thinking I'm good. Ummm nope!

The next day I get an email stating "Great news–Your AncestryDNA® kit has shipped. Your DNA kit should arrive in 7-10 business days (or earlier if you chose expedited shipping*). It will have everything you need to send your DNA sample back to us, so you can start discovering more about who and where you come from. You can track your package by clicking here..." So, I check it and it doesn't show like it's coming to me, so I'm thinking maybe they started shipping and now it's being shipped back to them, nope, a package arrived about 5 days later with 3 kits inside! Umm, I'm not paying to ship them back nor have tests done!

I never received an email from Ancestry of purchase or cancelation/refund, only email of shipping (weird). So, I checked my credit card and it looks like they credited back my money, but not sure if they are going to recharge me! They shouldn't because it's not like there is anything fancy inside the kit, just a saliva tube, mixture tube to preserve it, a ziplock bag to put it in, and an envelope to mail in the sample. I'm just disappointed because their commercials are deceiving and had my son excited for nothing on top of him knowing the kits arrived and were not doing them.

Ancestry had a computer problem a couple years ago and accidentally deleted many people in my trees. For the longest time, I couldn't get them to admit any wrongdoing but I finally got an honest person who admitted to me that this did happen and many people were affected. For years, I have tried to get them to rectify this but they say they can't. I have paid the premium price for over a decade and for ancestry to not have a back-up or some way of fixing this very common problem that was initially started by them, is inexcusable. The company knows that they are really the only company available that does this kind of service and they take full advantage of it. They could offer a print option so that you could keep a hard copy of your data but since they want to bleed you for as much money as possible with their various products, i.e., ordering a bound family tree book, etc., they won't do this.

This work has taken me thousands of hours of hard work and now it is corrupted and/or deleted. This is not even acceptable, however, I'm confident that Ancestry will continue this until they are forced not to. I encourage others if you are able to find a way to research your ancestry, try to find anything other than Ancestry to do it with. It may not be as comprehensive initially, but it will save you so much grief and frustration in the long run. Good luck!

We received a couple of DNA testing kits as a Christmas gift. Although skeptical about the security risks and past poor experience with Ancestry.com's system, we decided to look closely at what the service has to offer. We were shocked when we read about the company's policy to own aspects of the DNA in perpetuity! Add to that the boilerplate language that says if you agree to the testing that information pertinent to your health could be revealed to third parties. NO THANK YOU. And those third parties could be individuals the company has identified as kin, and no, there does not seem to be an opt-out process from this kind of sharing!

Having DNA results "integrated" into their family trees is concerning as well, especially given that their family trees are not that accurate and it appears that anyone with an Ancestry.com membership can log in and add to existing trees. Maybe okay for entertainment purposes, but not for anyone serious about genetic genealogy! Given the understanding that people receive Ancestry's DNA kits as a gift, there should be a swift and simple way to decline participation and return the product, but NO. There is a phone number listed that you can call if you want to return a kit, but you have to know the last four digits of the credit card that it was purchased on! Yeah, right -- like I'm going to ask a family member to give me their credit card number so I can return the gift or give them the aggravation of trying to return it! Calling the specific number for returns as on their website yielded no help at all!

So, we resorted to calling the main information line and waited a very very long time on hold (15 or more minutes maybe?) and spoke with a rep. We explained that we were not comfortable taking the test and wanted a refund. The rep said that they could not look up information on the kit with our name and address (where the kit was mailed) and that to get a refund that the gift giver would have to request the refund! What scammers! How do they get away with this????

When I looked further on their website, I also noticed that there appears to be no such thing as a full refund either! If the kit is returned within 30 days, the refund can be in the $50 or $75 dollar range -- after they take out shipping and possibly other fees. If it's over 30 days since the kit was ORDERED --not shipped, mind you, just ORDERED, there is NO REFUND!!!

And, as if that isn't enough bad business practice, think about all these sub-zero temps that have been happening in part of the country. Have the kits been shipped in a climate-controlled manner? I really don't think so. How well does the kit perform once it has been sitting outside in subzero temperatures for 8 to 12 hours???? Who knows? For those who LOVE Ancestry.com and their DNA testing procedures, God Bless You! But be forewarned. My rant is not just an illustration of Chicken Little screaming that the sky is falling. No. But there are SERIOUS security issues to be contemplated. For anyone interested in learning what can happen when DNA is "commercialized" read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks." I have been a member of Ancestry since 2000. I have had multiple DNA tests done, which I manage through my account. When I had my father submit his sample, I did not use the administrator option (purely accidental). After receiving his results, and realizing that they identify *me* as the donor, I called to set it straight. I was told they would fix the problem within a couple of weeks. Long story short, I have made several lengthy phone calls over the course of TWO YEARS, and the issue is still not resolved - despite being told REPEATEDLY that it would be "taken care of"! They have told me to "check back in a few weeks", or that they would "contact me to follow up" (never did).

Why doesn't anyone know what they're doing? I have wasted HOURS of my own time trying to chase down a solution. They have offered me a few months' subscription for free, but that doesn't help to fix the issue. What kind of IT department do they have, that can't make this adjustment to the account?? During today's phone call, I was told that the issue can NEVER be fixed... So why have I been strung along for TWO YEARS?! I would have closed my account and started from scratch TWO YEARS AGO, had I been given this information - but they took that option away from me by continually telling me to give them some time to fix it!

Most recently, I purchased a subscription that was to expire October 1st. I saw a charge to my credit card (which was expired, as I was going to use a *different* card when I updated my payment method on the account) for $149. I immediately went online to cancel. Still, when my credit card statement arrived, it showed the $149 charge, so I called Ancestry this morning. What a complete waste of time. I explained that I HAD cancelled online and Sasha explained that I hadn't gone "far enough", as even when you confirm that you DO want to cancel, you have to continue to another page. So, the initial cancellation did not take effect, and she could only issue a cancellation for MARCH 2018 - after all my $149 is exhausted.

I asked Sasha why there was a checkbox with the reason: "I didn't know my subscription was going to renew" when I cancelled online, if this were a unique problem. She indicated that their marketing department is gathering information, but it was not available to her. So, if they're not aware that the auto-renew is a problem, why are they polling cancellations to see who wasn't happy because they "didn't know" it was going to happen?! I asked her what I could have done differently, and she said I would have to have called and actively canceled the subscription, because it automatically renews (no opt-out option offered).

She also indicated that I had checked a "tiny box" (HER WORDS) when I purchased the subscription, stating that I had read the terms/conditions. Yes, I suppose I had - but I just didn't remember seeing the auto-renewal clause. So, despite the fact that I thought I HAD cancelled the subscription online (or so I thought), and I called as soon as I discovered the charge on my statement, I was offered no remedy (how about pro-rating a refund?) It's not like this is a few dollars, and now I have to find some way to pay for this during heating/holiday season!

Why does Ancestry make it SO difficult to cancel a subscription, yet they have no issues taking payment - even by way of EXPIRED credit card! With NO notification that the subscription is expiring, no opting out of automatic renewal, and no pro-rating payment/refunds... Doesn't it seem that there is only ONE thing on Ancestry's mind? This time it was completely different as though someone has changed our history. I know where my family traveled from and this time it looked like my family was from the US which is BS. They also made my family all labourers but there was great wealth, and a few famous people. Our name had surnames and we even seen when they traveled to this country. Now they are publishing rubbish about my heritage.

The main focus on the whole free page was the life expectancy!!! That tells me that this is very sick. That means any company or person can plug in a last name and see family life expectancy. Why do they post that type of info to anyone who see it... someone's family's life expectancy. You better believe they are selling this data. If you are excited about looking up your family heritage, and there in bold for everyone to see... life expectancy. Why is that even a part of the research? Why is that public information? I am going to see what I can do to stop this. It would be different if the life expectancy was just from long ago but they are publically posting life expectancy as current as 2004. That is really sick. This company is doing more with this data. I am not buying it now.

I'm writing in enormous frustration re the inefficiency of your site. Today I tried (yet again) to follow all the advice given to me from your advisors re how to download raw DNA data, this time with an IT Consultant beside me. He like myself is of the opinion that the site is unusable! Please note these random examples of the failures encountered to date: On the very few occasions when I seem to have been finally getting somewhere I just end up with a screen message from you saying that I can't use Ancestry because you are experiencing 'A high volume of traffic' and to try again later.

I'm managing my mother's account and when today her password again didn't work (which I need in order to download her DNA results for her), my partner -the IT consultant - changed it, only for us to then be told when we tried to use it - that the new details were invalid! Tonight I tried to call you, (no answer), the live chat feature is also closed... My previous telephone advisor, although very pleasant did not send a new DNA link although I had explained that the constant delays had resulted in it expiring. What on earth is going on? To be honest had my mother and I known in the first place that downloading DNA is dependent on either the use of a laptop or computer ('ancient' technology - as most people now use iPads!) we would have opted to use a different site for a DNA test.

This dependency on near redundant technology really needs to be plainly stated before people choose to buy your DNA kit. (Do you realize how frustrating it is having constant interruptions to an already seemingly hopeless task, which inform the user that this – or - that needs be updated or installed?). I'd forgotten how laborious laptops were until being expected to use one again just because Ancestry can't deliver DNA results by more modern means. While being given advice that never works I realize that the delays will not only hold up a crucially important search for a lost family member (when in view of my mother's age of 83 this is a race against time) but will of course inevitably just succeed in pushing me over into another monthly subscription payment, when really all we want to do now is unsubscribe.

Footnote to users: the Ancestry DNA test involves spitting copiously into a tube. N.B. Modern DNA test sites now use a swab! Ancestry is just NOT geared up to the service it is selling. Avoid! Perhaps if it stopped spending a fortune on its TV advertising and used the money saved to get it's service up to standard, customers might stand a chance of getting what they paid for.

I question the accuracy of the DNA lab, my husband and I submitted our DNA samples with two different activation codes and when the results came the results were identical! I think they tested his sample twice and entered the results under my code.

I am very disappointed in the results sent from Ancestry DNA. The results show 47% "Other". Are they kidding? For all the testing they supposedly do telling me 47% of my DNA is "other" is absolutely worthless. Don't waste your money.

Ancestry.com provides absolutely nothing for your money. (I have not and will not subscribe to their "services" as I've received NO value from their initial response on my test kit.) 23andMe provided much more value for initial investment. The attachment sent with the "Results" cannot be opened by any known reader. I've no clue on my heritage except for a brief, one-line description with NO supporting information. And, here's a rub - "submitting a receipt" will add a "Verified Buyer" label to your review; Okay, where do I find this? Could I have overlooked this important number? Save your money. Invest in, hey, a money market account - you'll get better return.

I ordered the DNA kit. Results came in and reported I was 15% Irish, 70% Western European, 15% other. Western Europe, 8 countries, 70%. I still have no idea what the majority of my heritage comprises. I'm very disappointed. I wish I had gone with another company for this information.

I ordered a DNA kit, the post office is returning it for insufficient address. I called and asked how do I get a refund and was told I would be charged $25, so my refund would only be $54. Ha, so I will lose money!!! The customer service agent was helpful and I realize it's not her policy. What a crock.

Ordered DNA kit. They took my money and my DNA and never gave me anything in return. It's been six months now with no results. All I get is, "Sorry we will ask for a report from the lab" and the lab has never responded and after all this time they offered me a one month free subscription. They are probably selling DNA to research labs and this is a farce to get people's DNA to do research on.
