The walls at Bed Bath & Beyond may have crumbled, but the name will live on.
Overstock.com has acquired the BB&B name, the company’s customer database, website domains, and other intellectual property. Going forward, Overstock.com will toss its moniker and become bedbathandbeyond.com.
“This acquisition is a significant and transformative step for us,” said Overstock CEO, Jonathan Johnson. “Bed Bath & Beyond is an iconic consumer brand, well-known in the home retail marketplace. The combination of our winning asset-light business model and the high awareness and loyalty of the Bed Bath & Beyond brand will improve the customer experience and position the Company for accelerated market share growth.”
What shoppers can expect
As things like this go, the transition will come complete with a shake-out that could change as Overstock gets comfortable with BB&B’s assets, products, and customers.
For one thing, Bed Bath & Beyond devotees will be able to access the vast and growing assortment Overstock offers, along with the kitchen, bedding, and bath-related products for which Bed Bath & Beyond has been a destination for over 30 years.
If you’re among the Overstock.com faithful and a member of the Overstock Club O loyalty program, you’ll be transitioned to Welcome Rewards. The newly branded Welcome Rewards program will continue to offer 5% reward dollars for all purchases that can be fully redeemed in subsequent transactions.
The re-launch of Overstock.com as BedBathandBeyond.com should hit stride sometime before August beginning with a new website and app.
Here’s what you can kiss goodbye
Those brick-and-mortar BB&B stores are gone forever. The deal excludes those assets, as well as the assets of buybuy BABY and Harmon banners operated by Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc.
Still, questions remain. For one thing, what happens to the BB&B inventory that doesn’t get liquidated? Overstock says it’s not part of the deal and didn’t disclose what will happen to the leave-behinds.
If you’re sitting on any in-store credit or need to return or exchange something, sorry. When May turned to June, both turned to dust.
Bed Bath & Beyond gift cards? All reports say they’re no longer valid, either. However, Shelley Hunter at GiftCards.com, says that If you have a multi-store gift card with the Bed Bath & Beyond logo, redeem the gift card for another brand listed on the card.
