I don't believe these people are allowed to get away with increasing a rental contract when it has not expired. This company first of all is overcharging consumers and are taking advantage of people who can no longer afford high rent prices.

I had an existing space with Public Storage. I needed another space so I logged into my existing account and made a reservation. They had a "half price clearance" going on so I booked a reservation. I received an email saying "Congratulations you qualify for this promotion." The website has an asterisk pointing to fine print for the 50% off and the $1 promotions but there was no asterisk for the clearance. Nothing on the website lets you know that the Clearance is really only for new customers. When I logged into the account the day before I was scheduled to move in, I saw the monthly rent was double what it was.
I called the property manager only to find that even though an email said I qualified for the promotion, I actually did not. This is textbook BAIT & SWITCH and a huge SCAM. Do not rent from this company.. Go to one of the other facilities. I feel bad for the property managers that have to deal with all the unhappy people such as myself that have been duped. District Manager failed to do anything as well and just referred to it as a "system limitation."

I've been in and out of these units for 10 years at various locations - The most recent one for 4 1/2 years. Every time I rented, I was told I had to take at least the minimum insurance. Then just found out that is not true. I had rodent damage, that seems to be my fault for minimum times I actually go there. Their insurance requires you to do ALL of the work for just a Max $250 payout with a hundred dollar deductible. Nobody third party looks at it, they want you to do inventory, provide proof it's yours, receipts, dates of purchase, etc. Hard to do when stuff is made up of collectibles, stuff inherited, and gifted, and then like most people, years of accumulated property through the years or even some hoarding. Then the rent can go up every 6 months or year they say from demand. After being a long term customer I couldn't pay the rate any longer and told them several times it was getting out of my budget.
By the way, keep cardboard boxes off cement. I had one spot in unit that moisture was coming up from poor sealed concrete. I am submitting pictures of proof of my statement. My stuff of loss is my personal property and it's more than $250 to go through clean and do their homework, so it's best I part ways and have found new space. I had a unit in past of a 10X30 and didn't go unit for a year and never had this problem. This was a smaller unit half the size and found competition less than 15 miles away for almost $80 less a month. Now that I moved out, I could move back for less, but I am happy there is finally many storage places around to compete thanks to HOA properties. Creating new competition and competitive pricing of people hungry for new business.

I rented this storage from Public Storage for a year. At the time of rental there was a discount, 50% but I had to pay a fee of which was 45% of the rate, so basically canceling the discount. Then there is insurance, other tax and fees. My biggest distress is that in the 9 months that I've had this storage unit they have raised it twice. I called the corporate office spoke to **, who said they are a month to month company and they can and do raise the price every 5 months. This information was not pointed out to me, at the time of rental and they have increased me nearly $20. If I were to stay there for 18 months the rate will be double and a half. I think this company is nontransparent and people should think hard before doing business with them.

66% increase in rent over two years. I called the facility where I received a national number. I called them and was told that it's a cost of business. My costs haven't escalated like that. My Medicare only went up 1.5%. Why is this allowed? Don't they want customers that stay? I cannot continue this on a fixed income. Beware consumers!!!

In less than 3 years of renting this storage unit, Public Storage has now raised the rent 50 percent. No other company I do business with has conducted business with such disrespect of their customers. How do they justify this action? I have asked the property manager, who is very sweet, but he says it is a corporate decision. When I call, they are unwilling to make any modifications to keep me as a customer. I think, at this point, I will contact the Attorney General for the State and ask that they conduct an inquiry into the matter. Obviously this action is a total disregard for business ethics. Time to look for a different storage facility. Shame on you Public Storage - I always pay on time, respect the rules, and have longevity as a client.

In no way is this review due to the property manager ** or her staff. They are worthy of 5 stars. The problem began almost a year ago when I warned ** that the keypad for elevator access was dying. She told me she had reported it, and reiterated that when I made periodic mention. When it failed, I and other tenants lost access for a week. When I emailed upper management, one guys replied that it was all fixed now and ignored my request for a rental rebate. His boss never even replied to me. This place is far from the cheapest, and I thought I was paying for a higher level of service. Apparently the signs about how much they care don't apply to upper management. I will be moving soon. I hope some other worthy company snaps up ** and her staff.

Public Storage has recently (two weeks??) purchased the storage rental company that we have been with for about 7 years. It seems they have "purchased" many in the area very recently. I received a letter one week ago for each of my two units explaining that they had bought the company and the new rules and regulations.
I tried to log on to the Public Storage website to pay my bill that would be due in a few days using the instructions on the letter I received. The site kept telling me that the info was not correct. I called local office to get info on how to fix this and received voicemail which I left a message on. Got no response within an hour and left two additional messages that day. Never got a return call from the previous day so this morning I went to office.
The office was completely under construction and the young lady in the office said she didn't have any access to the internet so that is why they weren't returning calls. It was also the reason why I could not pay my bill in person since I could not pay it online. Letter has the rate of one unit wrong. The lady at the local office said it was because the computer was charging tax but she didn't know why and she couldn't fix it (This added 15.00 to that unit). She had heard someone else complain earlier in the day but she hadn't passed the info to Corporate (her words). So when I inquired how was I supposed to pay my bill she told me to call the 800 #.
I called the 800 # to be told many things. One, that I can't access the site to pay bill because I wasn't using Internet Explorer. Who uses Internet Explorer anymore??? She then proceeds to tell me that she can log into my account and that it works. So I ask her about the amount due since it is incorrect and she tells me that it shows a 0.00 balance even though the bill is due tomorrow and she can't take a payment when it shows no balance due. But she would have to charge me 20.00 to take a payment EVEN THOUGH IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MY ONLY OPTION TO PAY AT THAT POINT. She claims to have sent these several issues straight to a manager and I would hear back very shortly. Well the rest of the day has come and gone and of course I have heard nothing. I have now spent several hours trying to pay a bill. Will be getting out of this nonsense VERY QUICKLY!!!

When I rented a storage locker recently, the salesperson told me I must take their property insurance at $11 a month unless I brought in my homeowner's policy and proved that my existing policy covered off premises damage (Which almost any Homeowner's Policy will have). Until that time I would have to take their insurance. After reading the fine print in the lease, all that was required was to decline the insurance and acknowledge that I would be responsible for any loss. No proof of coverage is required. Trying to get it cancelled was difficult and when I called today they said I had to come in and sign a form to "decline the insurance and acknowledge that I would be responsible for any loss." What a ripoff - they must hope that most people won't be bothered.

Public Storage is nothing more than a sales/marketing organization disguised as a storage business. The personnel move from facility to facility. It is heavily sales scripted. When you first make the call to the 800 number, in a matter of minutes you will get the feel that you are in a car dealership. Once they get your information they will make an appointment at the facility of your choosing.
When you arrive they will prequalify you for the storage unit based on a series of questions and then take you around in the little golf cart to the storage unit based on the questions you have answered, very similar to the car dealer. Then when you return to the office they will try to close the deal and get your money. If they don't get your money that day, they will make a sales follow-up call using another one of their employees to pressure you into a decision. They have a very sophisticated phone system. Once they have your phone numbers, don't try calling the 800 number back to reach the corporate office for any reason; it will only ring at the facility you visited.
When I first checked these guys out I did not find any bad reviews at first and then I returned and Googled Public Storage reviews and I got hundreds. No kidding. Oh, and the "$1 First Month Rent" is nothing more than a scam. Don't just take my word for it. Go to this site and read the Top 301 Complaints and Reviews about Public Storage at consumeraffairs.com.

I chose Public Storage 3 years ago when my family had a major emergency and we had to move. First, the first month's rent for $1 is truly a scam. Next, your unit will go up in price twice a year. I have never missed a single payment in the last 3 years, and they're making a responsible and reliable consumer pay $340 a month for a 10x30? When I saw that my rent was due to go up again in July, I decided to move out. I went to Public Storage in Blaine to have my Public Storage lock removed - and they didn't have the spare key!
I asked if I could cut my own lock with some bolt cutters, and they told me they were not allowed on the property and the only way to have the lock removed would be by a Manager. He was not in the office on the day I was there (June 3rd, 2015) and they said I would have to wait for him to call me so we could schedule an appointment. I said I want to be present when my lock is cut, and they assured me it would not be cut unless I was there. Nearly 3 weeks later on June 17th, after calling them over a dozen times and only reaching a voicemail, someone finally called me back. They informed me that my lock had been cut on the 5th of June, and that someone had tried to call me to inform me. There was never a call placed to me by them, nor a message left, and I am having my T-Mobile call history pulled for the attorney general to prove that.
This meant 3 weeks of time I could have spent moving out was lost. I called the District Manager to politely inform him what had happened, and that I would be happy to settle the situation if they waived the fee for July. (Since I would have been out before then anyways!) Instead, he rudely stated over 5 times that the lock cutting was a courtesy and would not listen or be open to any other way to resolve the matter and that I would be charged for July if I am not out before then. On the inside of their office, there is a sign that specifically says that as consumers, we have a legal right to be present during the cutting of a lock on a personal unit! They never called me, they cut my lock without my presence, they were very rude to me on the phone, and never got back to me for nearly 3 weeks, and are now saying I am supposed to pay for July?!
I am very upset and I am contacting the Attorney General Lori Swanson tonight, and I will be contacting every consumer protection agency I can to make this situation brought to light, and so no one else has to deal with such unprofessional, expensive, and deceitful behavior this business has to offer. (Again, keep in mind, I was a loyal, long time consumer for over 3 years with NEVER missing a payment, and they couldn't make 1 exception for something that was 100% their fault!)

I've had a lot of my belongings in storage for most of the year. I put my stuff in a storage space at a (Public Storage) for like the third time now. I never liked dealing with this (Public Storage) but it is always the closest storage rental to go too from where I am living at the time.. And they're just all over the place it seems, they became a monopoly! But the truth is I've had my stuff in other storage facilities before and they were always so much better than this (Public Storage!!). First of all the other storage facility's treated me like a customer that appreciate my business, and not just another unit they can just fill! There are a lot of complaints I like to say about (Public Storage) and I am sure so many people that ever had to deal with them can agree..
They really think since they're a monopoly that they can just raise your rent whenever they want or if god forbid you lose your job or get laid off or whatever the case may happen to you... If you do not make a payment within just over a 30 day period they will put your unit in lien! And that means they charge you a second late fee which is $50.00. The first late fee is $30.00 by the way. Then they cut your lock off your unit and that is actually the lock you must buy from them when you first move in so then you have to buy a second lock from them again if you get out of lien. You also lose your insurance if you Dare to be late of your unit.. with all your valuables and personals not anymore insured from theft or other! But even worse of all once your unit is in lien and that is only being late for only approx. 35 days they can auction off your stuff! And oh yeah that also is a $10.00 charge when they advertise your personal belongings to the public!
But what most Disgusted me about this storage company (Public Storage) was getting this letter in the mail saying that if my balance is not paid in full by this date.. which is only about 40 days after they put my unit in lien that if they are not able to sell my unit then they will Dispose all my stuff in the unit! That is so Wrong! And it should not be legal! And before anyone says "well you should not be late paying," well this is only after thirty five days and then they own your stuff in your unit. Anyone can fall on tough times with money right? And one more thing.. I made this payment online on the last week of the month and I thought everything was good but what happen was for some reason it did not go thru. Next thing I know my unit is in lien and I have other big late fees now and they also want the next months payment too or I will still be in lien!
And here's the thing I can't figure. I get a whole bunch of bothering phone calls the whole entire month and once I made this payment the phone calls stop and then I get a phone call on the 5th of the month and that is the day they put my unit on lien.. Why didn't they call me these last six days knowing my payment had not gone thru but instead called and harassed me all month long when I really could of benefited from a call when my account was actually in trouble! And you know I never wrote a review online before today. But after I tried to ask customer service if they can please waive one or two of these fees and telling them this was only the first time this happen with my account, I was told no! And the (Public Storage) where I have my unit they did not care to hear me at all and even though I've been a long time customer! P.S I hate you guys!

It is supply and demand without regard to quality of tenant or payment history. If it fills up fast your monthly increases will come fast. I am stuck but will be making arrangements to move. However suddenly this month 9 days later just by chance I checked my email and saw that only yesterday on the 8th did they email me to tell me I was late charging me with a 20 fee and never notifying me that they also raised my rent again. In 1 year it went from 60 to 98. Now it's 118$ monthly. This is absurd. I guess they're not governed by any state or federal laws and can do whatever they want! I was contacted by the district manager who I now cannot get a hold of. I have called this district manager everyday and have left messages, no call back. That same night I receive another threatening email that, since I had already vacated, they would wreck my credit if I didn't pay for the 4 days!! I have little doubt that their actions are legal because it appears that the company is run by, and policies are set by, accountants and lawyers. It smells like screw the public and reward the shareholders.
Nevertheless, these kinds of corporate policies and practices are worthy of attention to warn others away in fear of tripping on one of their money grabbing rules. Now I wait to see how long it will take to get my complete June overpayment refunded to me. I've rented space with PS Storage for 25 +/- years. Last fall, due to the need for expansion into several storage spaces by a cell company, I was forced to relocate my belongings to a different space, several garages down from the existing one. Yesterday I received a notice that as of July 1st my rent will be raised by 17% ($40). I questioned both the date (Shouldn't it be November - 1 year from the move date) and the amount. Initial customer service agent essentially said “Because it's still below market - nothing can be done”. I asked for a supervisor - after 5 minutes negotiating through the phone menu I left a message. Today received a call back from an individual who essentially blew me off - saying no one can give you any reduction in the increase because you are still below market.
Given that I was paying more than $150 more than they say the market is, I said - how about returning the overpayments I've been paying for several years. The response was – “Can't do anything about that”. Of course they can do something about it - PS Storage obviously has absolutely no concern for long term renters, they could (and should) be willing to do something, they just refuse to do so. I will most definitely look for a new facility to relocate my belongings to. They are EXTREMELY convenient to my home (location-wise) but enough is enough. I will pay their 17% increase for a few months - but will most definitely seek another facility who is more respectful and more thankful for their long-term renters.

Up pricing is a trap method used by Public Storage. Once you have moved in and have spent a lot of time and effort getting your possessions in house they raise the "rent". This is done knowing that for you to move is just too costly and difficult, you are trapped and there is no end in sight. If you do not pay they auction your possessions and rent the space to another. If you do pay there is no assurance that in a few months the rent will not go higher once again. In addition they deflect any calls of complaint. You are treated like a dog chasing your own tail and there is nothing you can do about it. They will exhaust you until you either move out, pay the increases or abandon your possessions. No matter it is a lose, lose, lose for you. STAY AWAY or Pay.

I was forced due to a medical condition, to have to move out of my house and store all my belongings. The closest storage was Public storage so this is where I put my stuff. I have been with the company since 2011. I started off with a 20x10 unit but after rates kept rising on me I had to scale down to a 10x10 ( which was only a $20 savings) and they charged me for having two units at the same time. I was moving out of one unit into another, I guess that is considered having 2 units at the same time, at this point I was a customer of theirs for 2+ years already (no loyalty treatment whatsoever).
Now I am in a smaller unit which is closer to the woods. One day I went down to check on my belongings and saw some mouse poison packets in the corners by the door. First off I know I didn't put those in there and I know I had no mice/rats when I moved in, then I noticed cardboard pieces on the couch I have stored, which lead to a box that had been chewed thru. I am very angry and go to the office to ask them about rodents, I was in a storage unit up front for 2+ years....NO RODENTS. They put me in a unit near the woods and now there is rat poison and rodent damage IN my unit. What do they do? They give me more packets of poison and say "The units near the woods are more susceptible to rodents. What can we say, it is Rat City for a reason." I live in White Center aka Rat City and this was their explanation.
Another situation is one time I opened my unit and discovered mold on some items that were visual. Again I am PISSED off and go to the office to complain and they say it will go away when the weather gets better hence we live in Seattle the rainy city. So after several more rent increases in the next two years (It just raised from $225.00 to $248.00) for a 10x10 unit I call to see if there is anything that can be done to bring down the cost or since I been there for so long if maybe they can put a rent freeze on my unit and the answer is NO. I get a speech about land property values and reassessment BS.
Needless to say I can't take this kind of treatment any longer so I called around to a few other storage companies within a 10 mile radius and found a place that for $138.00 a month (no gimmicks) I can get a 10x10 unit and they provide a truck to help move your belongings. I will be moving out of Public Storage on the first of this month. GOOD RIDDANCE to the horrible service and units at Public Storage. I do have one question, when I start moving my belongings, if i find further rodent and mold damage can I sue Public Storage?

In January of 2005 my daughter and I rented a storage space for $95.00. As of June 1st 2015 we have been advised the cost for the space that we have occupied for 10 years will be $178.00 monthly. To my knowledge no repairs, improvements or anything have been done to this space during this extended rental period. This is an increase of approximately 89%. During this time there have been advertised specials for new rentals and yet long-time clients are treated with no regard for rental collected..only increases in the use of facilities. Why is no courtesy extended to me?
I have been harassed on occasions if the rental check happened to be one day late. In these instances I have suggested that I would call TV stations and expose this company and have refused to pay what they have designated as a late fee. An investigation into this company's practices should be forthcoming in revealing interesting details of their practice of raising rental fees at their discretion.

I must say that this company employs idiots and circus freaks. I signed my soul to the Devil himself. They have screwed me blindly. My life is destroyed on the account of their scams and greed. This company should starve to death. I have been living in misery since I first stepped foot into their location. Everything has been lies after lies. They are enforcing fees in order to rank up their revenue. Every time that I speak to one of their incompetent agents they just want a payment. They have no solutions to their customers' concerns.
I have been chasing my own tail on the account of what they say was my fault. I submitted a payment on May 1, 2015, only to find out on May 10th that they rejected my check and charged me all kinds of fees. They claimed that I intentionally submitted a wrong account number. They don't have a customer service department that can handle any of your concerns. They are just there to take your money. They will wait until your things are ready to go to auction before they contact you with your delinquency.
I must say, run like HELL if you are thinking of renting with Public Storage. Your soul will die the day that you rent with Public Storage. These people make you feel like the lowest scum of the Earth if you try to dispute any overcharges on your account. They will fabricate all kinds of delinquencies against you in order to take over your belongings. You will never see the light of day with the SCAM that Public Storage has going on. Everything that they tell you from the beginning is lies after lies. I have an outside drive up unit that has cockroaches and feces everywhere and it's moldy. They claim that they have a great pest control system. The world will be a better place without Public Storage. This company destroys peoples lives.

Public Storage advertisement on web says, "Memorial Day Half-Price Sale: New Rentals Get 50% Off Your Rent Every Month." Thinking there would be a catch, I called the toll-free number on their website and spoke to a nice agent who of course could not give a straight answer regarding how many months would be 50% off. It clearly says "50% Off...Every Month" but this does not appear to be the case. I've decided to rent elsewhere and I highly recommend that anyone reading this check the "fine print" before committing to a deal they offer. Ask the questions before their hook catches the side of your mouth.
P.S. (no pun intended) When I told the agent that I had spoke to another storage place and they gave me a price good for at least a year (I truly did) the agent said to "make sure to get it in writing." So I will share her advice. If PS tells you that the 50% price is good for every month you rent, get it in writing (before you sign a contract).

I saw the advertisement that referred to the $1 first month. I drove to the closest establishment. I found a 6x6 unit that would serve my needs. So while doing the paperwork I was told that I could only use the locks that they themselves sold. I could NOT use one that I had. So I asked how much they were? She said $18. I asked could I buy one from Lowes and she said no. I said "ok, how much is my total?" They said "just sign and date this agreement and I will get your total". She looked at the computer and another lady came over and pointed at a price on the computer and the other lady pointed too and said "this one?" she said "no this one". So my total for a 6x6 unit with lock and $1 first month totaled $57.62. WOW! Just plain crazy.

I absolutely despise these types of storage facilities! The service is terrible, you aren't valued as a longtime customer. If you're one day late they want to foreclose on all of your stuff!!! Absolutely insane to me to be treated like that. And there really isn't anything you can do about it if you can't store it where you are, so you have to take the punishment. There is a solution coming though because my friend told me about some company is starting another solution to storage. I think it's getstost.com or something and I guess they aren't up and running but you can sign up which I did. I can't wait to ditch these bi-polar storage facilities and use a different way.

I import product from China and occasionally need extra space. For the first time ever I rented a 10'x20' from Public Storage. Our boxes incoming from China have a specific size LxWxH so it is very easy with a CAD rendering to see how many boxes will fit into a 20x10 space and how many boxes we have to stack. To the best of my knowledge, 10'x20' = 200 square feet. Despite our accurate CAD rendering, we noticed that a large portion of boxes would not fit. At first I thought we had made a mistake in our calculations, so we recalculated and re-measured everything. The truth of the matter is that the unit that was supposed to be 200 sq feet, was only 144 sq feet of usable space. Moral of the story, people lie, figures do not. If they are charging $150 for 200 sq feet and they end up giving you 144 sq feet, the cost should be $108 as opposed to $150 monthly. Again, this is living proof that figures do not lie.
Secondly, their insurance seems to cover everything. We asked if it covered mildew rodents and the like. Their answer was "yes". "Are you a storage rental facility or an insurance company, I ask"? Most household items are covered by home owners insurance, so before paying extra insurance, please check carefully on what is covered and not. Get them to write it down, and sign. If they are not willing to do that you must not get conned into paying. "Oh, the state of Florida demands you have insurance!" "Ok fine, show me the legislature then". I hope you can see where all this is going? What is wrong with people?

Another predator business. Taking advantage of people at a stress time (moving). The use of storage for your personal belongings is one that is made under stress. My nightmare started in April 2014. Same story as everybody else. Bait and switch with the $1.00 month story. I was there less than a month when the locker was burglarized. They allowed me to look at the storage unit supervised, giving them a rough estimate of what was take. So they could file a police report. (3 days before my son wedding, on May 30, 2014). Stressed again. They filed the police report and placed a lock on it. I really no longer reside in Missouri. But back about every 2 months.
I go to the locker after wedding and prior to leaving and I'm told until I purchase my own lock I can't enter the locker. So now I will never know really who stole what. So went back in July I purchased a lock and completed a more thorough inventory of my missing items gave to front desk employee to add to police report. 2 cases of wine for the rehearsal and wedding stolen. 1 case expensive (Duckhorn), the other cake something. All in all approximately 10 to 12 items stolen. Police Department informed me that they frequently broken into. Estimate of cost to replace my items on a good day $1200-$1400.
Perfect Solution informed me that some of my things were old. I didn't have proof of ownership (receipts). (Who has receipt for their Christmas tree and ornaments). Yes they stole my 7 1/2 ft artificial tree and ornaments. So after the $100 deductible, $508.00. Are you kidding me. That covers my tree and ornaments. I would've come out better donating. What was stolen at least I would've gotten a tax write off. (items Hoover spin brush, HAIER room air conditioner, Samsung home theater, Sony convert tapes to DVDs, Acer aspire notebook, Euro Pro heavy duty sewing machine and a brand new never used fireplace electrical heater (took the heater left the mantel) and of course the rehearsal and some of the wedding wine. How do you pay for storage and not allowed to enter? Who does that? By July 2015 I will have what belongings I have left out of that crooked facility.

Based on my experience and the number of negative reviews, it would be wonderful if the appropriate group could open an investigation into Public Storage's pricing and management practices. Certainly not loyalty generating. This is a publicly-traded company and they have made so many acquisitions that there are very few additional options available for the consumer. If they are going to raise my fee by nearly $20 after 6 months with no additional benefit and no business case for why (other than a verbal reflects the market) it is great incentive to take my business elsewhere -- but there is nowhere to go! Further the price increase does not indicate a from -- only the to. They can and should do much better.

I have been with Public Storage since the end of December 2015. My husband and I were sold on a unit because of their winter special that advertised a 5x10 unit for $105.50/month. It had only been a few months before I received a letter in the mail stating that they have raised my rate to over $139.00/month. Because my contract gives them the right to raise rates, I am locked into this situation unless I want to pay for a U-Haul to move my belongings. When I called to make a complaint with customer service, they explained that they knew that people would be angered by the raised rates and that they may lose customers but it was what they were willing to sacrifice. They would not pass me along to anyone else because the company is refusing to negotiate lower rates with anyone. Please do not use this company to store your belongings. They rope you in with a special promotion and then jack up the prices on you a couple months in.

Okay, so on April 30, 2015 I received a call from Public Storage that I owe a balance of around 45 dollars. I didn't know I owed any money because at the time of signing, March 22, 2015, I was told that the amount of 31 and some change would cover my storage until April 30, 2015 and that I could pay a prorated amount, around 25 dollars, and that It would take me until the end of May. Well I said I didnt need it that long and that I will have my things moved out by April 30, 2015.
Okay, so on April 30, 2015, the day I was going to move my stuff out, Public Storage called me saying I owed money. So I didn't understand how so I drove to Public Storage on April 30, 2015 and talked to someone about the situation and told them that **, the property manager, had told me that the money I paid March 22, 2015 would take me to that very day, April 30,2015. So that employee had me wait until ** came in from viewing the property to talk with her and she told me I owed around 45 dollars. I told her I didn't have it on April 30, 2015. I will have it on my payday, May 5, 2015, and asked how much I will owe then. She said, "Around 57 dollars."
Now I am up because I was told as long as I moved out by April 30, 2015 that I would owe anything. But anyway I told her, "I will be there to pay the 57 dollars on May 5, 2015 and move out." She said, "Okay." So today is May 5, 2015 and I went to the Public Storage to pay and move out. Now they talking about I have to pay close to 200 dollars and now I am really angry because I was told, "Around 57 dollars." So the lady was trying to help me get the situation resolved. She gave me a number to call this man named **. He has the worst ability to work with customers. I mean, this man hung up in my face and told me he isn't calling ** about the situation because it's her off day and that he can waive the fees but won't. This place sucks and I mean this man sucks. So I hope that no one who reads this rents to that place, let alone talk to the sad, horrible employees.

Actually, the price to upgrade to a 5 X 8 was only a few bucks more so I placed a hold on one and set an appt. to meet with the PS rental agent.
When I arrived at PS she showed me the unit and we went back and I signed the rental agreement. But she did everything she could to upsell me -- like larger space, boxes, bins, plastic floor liner, a lock that they recommend for about $18 and they need to approve any other lock. But what really sent me over the edge was she placed a card in front of me and said, "Here are the different insurance levels. Which level of coverage do you want?" The coverage levels were between $3000 and $5000 and I believe that the cost was $11 - $15 which sure jumps up my monthly overall cost.
I said, "I don't want any insurance" and she responded, "You have to. It is a requirement of the rental agreement." I told her that I was through with all the BS and nickel and dime crap they try to charge and walked out. Fortunately I never gave her my credit card. From August 2013 I rented space at the Public storage on Broadway and Hollywood in Chicago. I made monthly payments until May of 2014 which I paid the month of June in advance because I was traveling out of the Country. All my belongings and those of my children were stored in the storage (I had just moved from a 3 bedroom house) ranging from living room, bedrooms furniture, my babies items from bath to everything, TV, computers, DVDs, professional photography cameras, stereos, shoes, clothing, suitcases, DVDs, duplicating machine, then I returned later in July 24th 2014 because I was bereaved. I called the Storage to make a payment on August 30th. They said I was late because my unit was put on auction in beginning July and Sold on August 27th. I asked “how come?” They said I was over 60 days late as their policy demanded. They claimed I had not made any payment since May.
I did clarify that I made June payment in May and that they had put my storage on sale before the 60 days timeline. The storage agent checked and confirmed I did the June payment and asked that I speak with the manager. I called him severally and he never returned my call. I asked another friend to call and he explained to my friend that I was 3 months late. My friend mentioned that it was sold on 51 days and was put for auction way before 30 days. When my friend insisted that he checked the records to make sure I made no June payments, he was shocked I did after verification and now started saying their policy was 30 days not 60 days. My friend said “we would go to court”, then he responded “the storage was auctioned at 100 dollars” and that I owed the balance of 190 plus fees since my payments were about $145 a month.
I had begged to get the contact of who the storage was sold to so as to get my certificates and other important documents and the storage declined to give me. I felt this was intentional knowing that the manager had gotten twice in my unit to see what was inside and will not disclose exactly how it was sold and to whom. They never sent me any auction notice.

With my final month left they called and told me to pay the month or get my stuff out by the end of the day. (Got the call at 4:00 pm). Had I known that my final month would've been spread out over the last 6 months due to a increase in rent I would've gotten my stuff out immediately. To be spoken to like I've just skipped out of rent when in reality I paid for an entire year up front is ridiculous. They said they couldn't even let me get the stuff out the following day unless I paid for the month.
The customer service for clients that have never paid late and obviously didn't know about the discrepancy that wasn't even their fault is terrible. The least they could've done was give me an extra 5 hours instead of treating me like I wanted a month free and like I had tried to skip out on paying for months on end. I'm on SSI due to several disabilities, and each purchase equals enormous sacrifice of food or medication. Every item stored was brand new, placed in plastic storage bags, and further stored in the new 5 piece luggage set. I added moth balls and cedar to each bag and zippered all bags. Periodically, I'd check on my belongings, cleaning out any debris that may have come in from other units. I also sprayed my small space with insecticide, even though I was assured, upon signing the rental agreement, they used pest control monthly and stated that "no one has ever complained about bugs or mice."

People, I implore you to not vote for any individual who has ever been in office. If we vote all existing incumbents as they come up for reelection, none will be so powerful that a "rookie" will be run over. They'll figure it out, it's not as complicated as your existing representative wants you to believe. And it shouldn't be. They no longer represent the people and it's time we collectively put a stop to it. This is just one example of bad laws protecting corporate and government official's own self serving desires. One official responsible for the so called California "Tenant Bill of Rights" was the son of a wealthy property owner venue who got himself elected for the purpose of aiding his family's business operations, using his wealth to get elected. These are bad laws, unconstitutional laws, and representing the constitute is the last thing on their mind.
They sold my life for two months past due garage style locker space when I broke my arm. I'm 53 years old, worked since I was 16, paid a lot in taxes, followed the law and was discarded like yesterday's leftovers from the sheriff's department, who lied about a fast tracked eviction that took place after I mentioned to my landlord I would be filing bankruptcy to HELP me insure I could pay my rent, when they became fearful that they wouldn't be able to remove me if I didn't pay the rent.
To the Sacramento city parking authority encouraging officers to push the envelope on issuing parking tickets to pay for a sports complex, issuing tickets for time prior to my actual arrival time, to using grant funds to pay for a local health department employees salary who did not perform the described duties, because the employee actually doing the duties was already paid under a grant for another program. This is after the entire grant funding was redirected to the local health department after coincidentally having a local heath executive appointed to the State program that administers the Federal grant funds, and who planned to return to the local organization, bow endowed with millions to offset the reductions to the budgets under Obama Care. See the complicated web these officials weave using your tax dollars as their own personal checking account?
I lost my position while out on medical leave because they saw a way to get me out of their hair, even knowing they would lose eventually, but also aware that the taxpayer would pay the bill for their intentional illegal practices. Don't even start me on term limits, something I actually am against, but the majority wanted it and that is our governing process, I accept this, but not your elected representatives, they are elected to different districts when they term out of one. My home was under three different district numbers in 7 years, but neither I, my home, the street, or my res representative physically moved, just the district map.
If a law is found to be against what the government official personally wants, they simply change it to accommodate them and not the people's interest. This clear theft of my property without due process is a violation of my constitutional rights and shows that my destitution at 53, can, and will happen again and again. Came home and tried to pay month before and the month were in and was told NO. I was charged 109 dollars plus taxes and a charge for a loan of some sorts.
I'm so dissatisfied and sick of dealing with corrupt businesses w/ sales associates not interested in their clients and only want money, money, money. It turns out corporate will only give me a 20.00 adjustment. The worst part is that the things in storage aren't even worth 5$ but their sentimental value is beyond appraisal due to the fact that they were given to my wife and I. They once belonged to my now deceased family member. It's a shame that Public Storage is so greedy they should call it "WE OWN YOUR ITEMS STORAGE", not Public.

We rented a 10x40 regular unit from Morningstar Storage, Around November 2013 Public Storage acquired a majority of Morningstar properties, we rented another unit, a 10x10 climate-controlled unit around December 2013. We repeatedly found the temperatures above 90 (often cooler outside than in the unit), and in one case at 32 and below during a cold spell. We complained repeatedly about paying for a climate-controlled unit and not getting a climate-controlled unit. When we moved out to a more reputable storage unit provider this month we were told the HVAC for our climate-controlled unit was just fixed, so for a year or more they knowingly collected money for a climate-controlled unit while not providing a climate-controlled unit. The statement by the site manager is an admission to fraud, as it indicates they knew they were charging for something they never intended to deliver.
At no time did they offer to move us to a unit that had working HVAC, nor have them offered to compensate for the difference. They simply collected for a climate-controlled unit knowing that the unit they rented did not have working HVAC and thus was not climate-controlled. Upon recent google research we found a case in Charlotte NC (Trott vs Public Storage) which details that maintenance issues with all public storage faculties is part of a nationwide corporate cost cutting agenda, and our problems are not unique to the location where we rented our unit. The condition of the property where this storage facility is at is in terrible condition and confirms everything that is detailed in the Trott vs public storage case.

Stay clear of Public Storage (the self-storage company with the orange logo). My personal experience warns: do not fall for the $1.00 rent special by Public Storage, don't be bullied by high pressure sales tactics rooted in corporate directives and goals, review all invoices for inaccuracy, do not purchase the twice-the-price $18.99 padlock as required (its not). Finally, measure your storage space before you rent. I paid for a 10 by 15 Public Storage space. When measured the actual dimensions were 9 by 14. Put into perspective, that's 17 square feet (11.3%) less than advertised, or 133 instead of 150 square feet. Bottom line; don't patronize Public Storage (the mini-storage company with orange logo) for your self-storage needs. Find a more reputable mini-storage company and come supplied with a tape measure and a mindset to resist any high-pressure tactics.
Follow Up: What I have since discovered from Public Storage by speaking with Public Storage Regional Sales Manager for Las Vegas and Arizona Region, the Las Vegas District Manager and the local manager is that they aren't interested about any of the above and will refer you to their contract which states space configuration is only an estimate. Imagine, a mini storage company whose business it is to sell "space" knowingly errors by 11.3% of actual size. I would suspect that if all 2,200 Public Storage facilities with an average size of 45,000 feet differ by as little as 5-10%, it adds up to enormous corporate gains in the tens of millions of dollars.
Since I initially wrote this review additional information has come to light that reflects on the entire Public Storage Corporation located in Glendale, California. I am now convinced the entire 2,200 Public Storage facilities are run under the same "consumer be damned" attitude, and ALL Public Storage facilities should be avoided at all costs (your cost).
At this time I have an appointment to speak with the above referenced managers. At that time I will report how Public Storage Corporation deals with the outright fraud that I have uncovered. Until then I suggest you do not patronize Public Storage and find you're a reputable mini or self-storage company. If anyone reading this review has similar instances I would be pleased to hear from you to establish a class action law suit against Public Storage.

I have been a customer for 8 years and have never missed a payment. Auto pay, etc. 10 x 20 unit. Over the last two years I have seen a noticeable deterioration of the facility in Issaquah, WA. There is considerable debris from trees, leaves, branches. It's never ending. Many of the exterior lights are not functioning. My two kids tripped and hurt themselves owing to the poor light conditions. If I was a woman there is no way I would go there at night. Risk management should be all over this facility.
The local people that work there are very nice but they say the district manager doesn't care about the customer or facility management. The women working there are in their late 60's early 70's and he asked them to get on ladders to clean out the building gutters! Seriously? They charge top dollar; mine just went up 9.1 percent. In 2014 the national inflation rate was @ 1.5%. If you are going to charge top dollar you need to do a much better job of maintaining your facilities. I am planning to look elsewhere for storage.

My personal property, including furnishings were auctioned on January 27, 2015. I've been storing with Public Storage, since mid 2004 -- longer than 10 years, at their facility in Tucson, Arizona. I live in Los Angeles, California. Due to a bounced check in December, the first time in 10 years, my things were auctioned, because late fees and liens fees were assessed. I informed the office worker that they could merely re-deposit my check, but they did not. Thus, the payment I made in January applied against the December rental. And, when I attempted to make a payment in February, I was informed online that I owed 53 cents, because my possessions were auctioned on January 27th. Now, previously in January, I called John **, the regional manager in Arizona to ask him to waive the liens and late fees assessed in January. He never returned my voicemail.
State law requires that Public Storage send you a written notification, twice, that your items will be auctioned -- I never received these 2 notifications. In addition, auctioning the personal possessions of a long time customer, ever, seems unconscionable and beyond the 4 corners of any written contact. I'm going to pursue this legally and looking at all the complaints, it seems like Public Storage should face a class action suit.
Additionally, how predatory, insensitive, cold and cowardly of the individual who bought my items at the auction, to not be open to talking to me and returning my items. I've spoken with the Senior Vice President for Public Storage, Pete Panos and sent a letter to the CEO, Ron Havner. Public Storage now says they will send my personal belongings to my address in Los Angeles, at their expense -- my concern is if I receive these personal items, will I be waiving their liability for my other furnishings. I'm going to contact a lawyer, first thing Monday.

First off, the "manager" at public storage told me that insurance was "required". I asked to see the lease, and no, in fact, insurance is NOT required. Not by the terms of this lease. But WTF, the lease does provide, in many places and in all caps, that public storage is not responsible in any way, shape, or form for damage to my property while at the storage site. So if public storage has no risk if my property is damaged, why would they required me to protect myself? It is their way to jack up the rental rate by $15 (minimum). I asked the "manager" - do you tell all of your customers that insurance is required by this lease? Who instructs you to do so? And I asked her, too, if the rental rate is $15 more than the rate they quoted, why not just tack on the additional $15 rather than try to trick me into paying for something I am not required to buy and don't want?
Another trick: The lock. She put the lock on my unit before telling me I had to pay for it. And for this -- a lie about the insurance and a trick about a cheap lock, I had to pay her an "administrative fee" of $22. For the record, I have a good enough income I can easily cover this minor monthly rental fee. I am just having serious issue with being treated so poorly. I have serious issue with the "manager" blatantly misrepresenting the lease (which does not require insurance) (and if it did, I think public storage would be obligated to tell you up-front that this is part of the rental rate) to people who may not know how to read leases. I dislike being scammed. I regret deciding.

To my dismay, the first thing that popped up was an undercover story done by my local news cast Fox 40. It is here that I learned of the multiple units being robbed at Public Storages just in the Sacramento and surrounding areas. But the clincher is after 9 mo. & another 12 mo. they have yet to be reimbursed. I certainly hope that this will not be the case w/ me. The other disheartening story I read re: Public Storage units only was how they are making well over a million $ a yr just on the sales of the insurance. The greatest insult is that... anyone that signs a rental contract with Public Storage will learn they are REQUIRED to pay for insurance... it's mandatory. Many folks have homeowners, but regardless, whether you want or not, if you find yourself storing your property at PS, you'll be paying a monthly insurance premium. Insult? The cherry on top is when you dare file a claim. First, PS had captured on video four men snapping locks and stealing property out of units. To file a claim, there's a $100 deductible. And God forbid if you have no pre-storage photos or receipts of initial value, it will be an unhappy day for you.
I reported to BBB... and guess what? PS no response. They don't want to respond. Why? They are in bed with this insurance company. Surely someone out there knows a hungry lawyer... willing and desperate and capable of instigating a class action suit. One person, alone, is of no consequence, but if every outraged person that has been forced to purchase useless insurance, a deceptive trick (you are quoted one price, but then once you realize the monthly total it's significantly higher, thanks to this "mandated" insurance).
PS? You're nationwide and powerful. But ordinary folk despise any business that is so devious, it CHEATS customers out of their hard earned money. Since insurance is a mandatory requirement, it must be included in the advertised monthly rates Since your special lock is the only "approved lock," that cost must be factored into the initial cost to rent a unit and let's allow a public forum of anyone that's had damaged goods and attempted to make good on this "insurance" and it will expose the most offensive and unethical aspect of all. My property has been ruined by water that poured through the ceiling. I won't bore you with the sad details, only I will mention that I have a new found purpose and mission in life... and that is to expose behavior that is unethical and illegal and hold the criminals accountable.

In most states, they are required to send you notices both by regular mail and by registered or certified mail (most importantly this one because it verifies that they sent it and you received it). Two other units were burglarized that night and when filing the police report at the office the next day, I'd heard there were other thefts just 2 weeks before. This location has only 4 exterior cameras, according to an employee. In my opinion, this Public Storage location is not secure and should be avoided at all costs. There are no interior security cameras, again according to one of their employees, and no direct alarm to the police when outer doors are pried open which is the apparent case here.
It seems strange that such an unsecured property has NO negative reviews and makes me wonder if a number of other renters in this facility have been duped liked me, thinking their possessions were secure. I'd be interested in talking to an attorney about a possible class action suit, with the other renters there who've been affected by theft in recent years, to see if there's been any owner fraud involved with regard to their online reviews which distort the reality of what's going on at that location.

I explained that I came there because the customer representative and I spoke about the items that I need to store and both agreed that I need a ground level storage unit.
After I hung up with the customer rep, the woman from the facility called me 2 minutes after to confirm what I will be storing and the unit I will be coming to see. They got me to come there with my items under false pretenses and used the "Bait and Switch" method to try to get me to agree to a storage unit that is significantly more expensive. I tried to explain why this is wrong and she kept cutting me off by saying "You don't understand" while speaking with her hands and pointing at her head. I work in sales and if I was ever to behave like that with a client, I would be fired. When requested to stop saying that "You do not understand" and instead try to help me by possibly offering me a better deal, she refused.
I offered the names of the sales individuals that I have spoken to that offered me the price and the time of our conversation, as well as asked to pull up the recordings of our conversation, to which she continued to obnoxiously speak to me with her hands and claim that I don't understand their policy. I have called Corporate offices to file the complaint, where I was given the name of the regional manager. The regional manager does not bother to answer his phone or return his messages either. When I called the corporate office again, I was told to deal with the regional manager, Eduardo, who obviously does not bother to call anyone back, even though I have left him voice messages for 3 days.
The corporate office points fingers at the managers and managers don't care to do anything. I have never had a manager speak to me with their hands and not bother to solve the issue. No one at the company is held accountable for their actions. Even though I had names of the individuals I spoke to, the manager nor the corporate cared to hear it. There are plenty of small businesses that deserve the business before Public Storage. Stay away if you don't want to deal with uneducated idiots that lack common sense or customer service skills.

Signed a lease today for a 10x20 storage in Woodbury, MN for storing vehicle. I was almost mandated to buy a plastic mattress cover and padlock from them to rent me the unit. Manager's argument was that I needed to lay the plastic mattress cover on the floor so the floor does not get dirty. Driving over a plastic sheet is something I heard for the first time and unsure if illegal. I defended on the basis that the car may skid and hit the front wall. Later on I was told that I needed to clean the floor in a way I got it (such as brooming, spot cleaning etc.). The padlock was twice more expensive than one can buy from store, but the manager said I needed to use the exact same padlock they carry. Could not show the evidence in the policy so I realized she was trying to meet her sales goal by fooling me. Ended up renting, but did not take any of their product. The consequence is I was not given the access code until I show them what lock I would use, but they started charging me from today. Will see how tomorrow goes when I go back to them with the padlock I bought for less than half price they were charging.

If not paid, auction was set for 11/25/14 at 10:00 AM. My husband made a payment by check online which bounced. He made another payment on 11/8/14 which went through for the amount. The facility sold my items. What is strange is that they did not apply the October payment. I have had rental spaces in the Lakewood CO (Union/Alameda) location for 6+ months, pay on time over $200 per month. Recently I was moving one car out and wanted to move my cousin's car in. The rude young woman (Carrie or Casey) at the front desk didn't even let me ask the whole question of what I needed to do before immediately barking out that it can't be done. I asked politely again and she said, "no, it can't be done." I said "fine please cancel my parking spot for $58 per month." She then proceeded to say that there were a couple of options. By then she had lost me and I was out the door. My cousin went up to the location by my bad recommendation and signed up for a spot and they charged her $80 for first month rent. Within 24 hours she called to cancel and they said that they could not refund any money as they have a strict no refund policy. She had not parked her car there and they would even consider a partial refund.
We found out the name of the manager Larry who was waiting for the call and basically said the same thing- "no refunds, if you give in to one customer service issue you will have to give in to all." He was also rude and had zero customer service skill. When I asked him from a confirmation on my space being cancelled he said that the only way I could cancel was to go back to the office and ask for a cancellation receipt. I shared that the rude young lady did not share that and he immediately skipped past the poor service again. I would suggest that anyone considering renting space from Public Storage run as fast as you can. As you can see by the huge amount of complaints posted that they are not concerned or care at all about there customers. I look forward to telling my bad experiences story with every person i know, through Facebook and every other channel I can find.

I rented a 5 unit at Simms and Alameda facility at the first of the month. I started moving my stuff in and noticed half of the wire roof was missing and was bent like someone got in there already. I should have noticed upon inspection of unit but didn't. On the other hand, this unit should have never been rented like that, so PS never inspected it after last people vacated. Asked to move to a different unit, sure for 27.00. Asked to move to smaller unit, sure for 20.00 lock fee. They no longer move people for maintenance issues. Also, I was charged 28.00 for a 3 dollar lock, robbery. I said I had a lock at home and was told it would only save me 2 dollars. I said I will be out at the end of the month and will pay triple to another storage facility to know my belongings are safe.
I will NEVER do business with Public Storage as long as I live. You lost my business forever. They said I could leave my key for maintenance to fix it but no time frame on when it could be done. Sounds so fishy to me and I feel doing business like that is so shady. Maybe there is a reason for this? My advice is to spend the extra money where your things will be safe.

I called him and he said it was customer service that could help!! No one there knows what they are doing and who is in charge. I complained that we were not even informed of the changes. And the District manager did in fact have information that the letter was not delivered to us! And yet even with that information no one could help by at least keeping our current rate for one additional month, even an employee. I spoke to an employee of Public Storage and that person stated that the major complaints about Public Storage is that they increase rates without notification to their customers!!! BEWARE!!!! Better yet GO ELSEWHERE because if they can't even provide assistance to a disabled Veteran then they do not deserve to be in business with these practices.

I rented a 10x20 space at Public Storage at 8733 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, NC in August of 2012. In October 2014 I had reduced the amount I had in storage and made arrangements to move into a 10x10. In the process of moving I realized that three of my triple laminated, furniture grade storage units I had assembled were significantly damaged by an active termite infestation. They also destroyed a cardboard box that was on the floor (fortunately just pots and pans within). There was also a significant infestation of large, black carpenter ants. When I inspected the smaller unit I had reserved, it had two termite tunnels on the wall.
I was informed by a wood destroying insect inspector that the state does not require treatment for these facilities. I think most consumers would assume that they can place furniture or boxes on the slab as you would in a slab on grade home. Because I observed mud tunnels in two storage units I think it is reasonable and necessary to require that these facilities be treated and maintain contracts that will ensure those that use these facilities will be made whole if damage occurs. I suspect that the drywall in these units may well be significantly infested.
I calculated the material cost of replacement at $768.01 based on Home Depot pricing (calculation document available) and when I went to file a claim, realized that the insurance they required would only pay $250 with a $100 deductible for vermin damage, or clearly insufficient to even pay for the material, let alone the labor involved. I think that Public Storage is negligent in several respects and they have refused to do more than help process the insurance if there are problems.
My concerns: I assumed that Public Storage would have a pest agreement that would not only insure that this type of destruction would not occur, but that if it did that some entity would be financially accountable. They obviously do not and do not even spray the perimeter given the infestation of ants. I assumed when I found the damage that Public Storage would do the right thing and take full responsibility and they will not. They have no plan to disclose the infestation on this site to renters and likely this is a problem that potentially extends to other sites. My situation is the tip of the iceberg. Renters should be able to place furniture and boxes on the floor as they would in a slab on grade home or be informed that that they should not. I consider the amount the insurance offered in the inadequate policy and the insult. I posted as a review on their web site and they have not shown it.

My family has been a customer since 2003. A few years ago, they increased our rent from $75 to $95 without notice, and not too long ago, they increased it to $115/month (again, without notice). All of our payments are through auto pay, therefore, it is automatic each month. The manager at the Public Storage on Belleview in Denver called and told us that the payment didn't go through. So, I did a manual payment online. The next morning, we were unable to enter our storage and was charged $220 cash to enter even though we told him we have already paid. Keep in mind that my dad (who does not speak English) made the payment. The manager did not give him a receipt and when I called to talk, he hung up on me and refused to return the money. This was not the first time this happened, a few months ago, we got a call that they were going to auction our storage. I had to and the manager was not cooperative and rude. I told him that our rent was automatic each month, therefore, if he did not receive our payment, it is his system's fault and that he should look into it. He again, hung up on me.
I called back only to be greeted by the answering machine, so I left a message and told him that if any of our things are auctioned, I will sue the company. A few months after that, our storage was broken into. We have insurance on this storage, so they said that they would do an investigation. It has been over a year and we still have not heard back from them. We thought about switching storage on multiple occasion, but this storage is the most convenient. I'm very disappointed in the way management is handling the situation here at the Belleview Public Storage in Denver. The manager here definitely take advantage of the fact that many of his customers do not speak English. I DO NOT recommend this place. It's a total SCAM.

We went down to TN, from MI to pick up our things from the storage unit, only to find out they had auctioned off our unit the week prior. They placed a lien on our unit in July and never notified us. The 5 payments we have made since then was being applied to the monthly rent and not past due balances, so they claim they had the right to auction off our unit. Every time we made a payment via the internet, the amount given was not included in the total. If you call to make a payment, they charge $25 so we choose to make payments online. When we did call September and spoke with a customer service rep, he never notified us then either that the unit was in a lien status. He stated the payment we were making at the time would put our account in good status. So instead Public Storage, left the lien on unit, continued to collect my 5 additional payments, just to auction it off two weeks later.
We lost EVERYTHING! The only amount remaining on the bill was lien and late fees of $150, that we were not aware. $30,000 worth of stuff sold for $1,600 with only a $150 balance... WTF. We went to TN with 2 trailer loads and 2 van loads. When we moved back we were only able to take 1 van load. The rest ALL gone. Our kids are devastated. These storms were coming from the direction I was going to drive to so I decided to wait for the storm to pass on October 15. I did not think it would be a problem to vacate my unit first thing the next morning. I went to my unit on October 16 and vacated the unit, made sure it was clean and notified the employee. The employee checked the unit and said it was fine and he would give me my vacate papers.
I asked if I owed anything for vacating the following morning and he said I owed $108 for the remainder of the month. I was stunned and asked why I was being charged for the rest of the month. The employee said it was in the contract I signed. I said, "It's only a matter of hours I overstayed and only due to the storm." I live on a fixed income and did not have it in my budget to afford renting the unit for a longer time. They make people pay for something they are not getting and using the contract to extort money from people. I would not mind paying for the extra day but not anymore. I STRONGLY encourage anyone who is considering Public Storage for their storage needs to reconsider and find a company that actually cares about it's customers. While this location (Public Storage Property # 23055, Arlington Heights, IL) does have friendly staff, this company is not about customer service or working with people PERIOD. I rented a unit in March 2014, paid 3 months up front and then fell behind in September and now October. I lost my job and have absolutely $0 income, have depleted my 401k and have been scraping up money here and there to make payments here and there as I can (I've started babysitting for family members who are paying me to do so).
In any case, my unit is scheduled to go on the auction block in two days, less than 2 months after I feel behind in my payments. I owe them about $200 which includes late and lien fees. Everything I have to my name besides my car is in that storage unit and this company REFUSES to work with me despite my efforts to show that I am trying and WANT to pay my storage fees. On top of that, the call EVERY SINGLE DAY which I see as harassment considering they clearly know my situation. They also harass my mother (b/c I put her down as EMERGENCY CONTACT) on a daily basis even though I've demanded twice that they stop calling her. Just today, Samantha called me yet AGAIN asking me when I planned on paying and to remind me that my possessions would be going up for auction on October 23. She then had the nerve to ask me how I planned to pay the fees/money I owe them after the sale of my possessions... and twice used the term "ABANDON".
Excuse me, Public Storage, I clearly have NOT ABANDONED my property so stop calling it as such! Someone who has made even small payments and is TRYING to meet their financial obligations with you is not abandoning their life's possessions. BOTTOM LINE, THEY DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT YOUR SITUATION AND THEY WILL NOT WORK WITH YOU SHOULD YOU FALL INTO AN UNFORTUNATE SITUATION SUCH AS UNEMPLOYMENT. The funniest part about this, if I've heard it once, I've heard it 20 times... it was in your lease that you signed (fees, liens, etc). Yeah, I know... I should've NOT SIGNED the lease because I should've known that there was a possibility that somewhere down the line I would lose a job and fall on hard times financially. Yep, next time I'll remember that before I sign any lease. What a load of crap... and, if you're reading this review, make sure you check other consumer review sites out. Public Storage has more complaints than any company I've seen, and it seems to be that people are complaining about the same issues over and over.
Wake up Public Storage, sooner or later people will wake up and go down the road to the next storage facility. And thanks for giving a crap about good, hardworking people who, though no fault of their own, have fallen on hard times. AND MOST ARE WILLING TO PAY WHAT THEY CAN AS THEY CAN... that's the worst part. You are taking from me things that mean nothing to anyone but me and things that are simply not replaceable, as well as all of my winter clothing. Maybe I'll find some of my things at the Goodwill or Salvation Army when I go looking for a winter coat.

I have renter's policy and asked her if I can use it, she said ABSOLUTELY NOT - policy of the Public Storage. She stated that this is one time deal and then I will pay $36, BUT when I got all the paperwork it stated $49.90 per month and only next month at $36. Month at $36 is the $1 month rent plus all the fees!!!! I called few other storage companies and they ALL told me I can use renter's policy plus for $50 I can rent 5x15 unit with no sale. I paid $50 for 5x5 only!!! I called Public Storage immediately and Diane (manager I guess) told me NO refund and plus she lied to my face and said that she NEVER told me I cannot use my renter's policy.
I am not crazy. I asked her twice and both times she said NO I can't use my policy. The Brits have a pejorative term for a person or company that engages in cunning and sneaky behavior that is "technically within the rules of the law but borders on being unethical." It is called "sharp practices." The self-storage company known as Public Storage meets this criteria hands down. I pay all of our bills online through our bank. The bank immediately removes the funds from the designated account and less than 48 hours later the vendors are paid. Last week, I received a call from the manager of the storage facility I use informing me that the electronic check I submitted had been returned due to insufficient funds. I said that's not possible because the bank would not have processed the order if there was not enough money in my account.
That's when I found out Public Storage had taken nearly ten days to process the payment! I quickly came to the conclusion that Public Storage's extreme tardiness on processing my payment was done with the intention to be able to assess me for late fees and returned check fees. The fact the bank has not charged me, too, for a returned check tells me my hunch is correct. By my reckoning this company must collect tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars every month every month from customers. I gave notice last Thursday and our stuff will be out by the end of the month. Public Storage is a sleazy company. Don't do business with Public Storage.

First of All, I would like to say that I'm elated that I finally got whatever is left of my stuff out of pawn/hawk. That is exactly the situation you put yourself in when you rent from public storage. There was a time when I was late and they hit me with a 50 late fee then 100. When I finally got caught up, they raised my rent. When I called the district manager about reducing my rent, she didn't even return my calls. After all the fees and raises, the rates end up being just as high as a pawnshop. It seems like this company is after everything they can get from you. If they see you pay late, they get whatever they can from you, including your stuff. Also, they cut your lock after only 7 days late. Once you pay up, then you have to buy another lock again at around $20. I was also raised twice in two years. My rent ended up being higher than other vacant units in the same facility, same size.
There were also problems along the way with my unit. When winter comes along and there is a snowstorm, many times my unit was snowed in. The plows would shovel the snow into the doors of the units. I called the dm and she acted like it was my fault that the company she hired to plow did this to me. She had someone shovel out my unit, but she was very rude and cold about it.
I thought I would be glad to get my stuff out, but that turned out not to be completely the case. Again elated that I no longer have this noose around my neck. However, things change when it comes time to move everything out. Everything was pretty tightly packed. When I started moving I realized that the roof was leaking into my unit. A lot of what I was storing had to be tossed. A few electronic items that worked prior to storage no longer worked. There were several paintings that had watermarks from flooding as well as mold spots from moisture. Some pieces of furniture had been damaged from water. Our king size mattress had to be tossed. Also, there were pieces of furniture with metal hinges, and the metal hinges were completely rusted. Also a few other metal items that had gotten rusted. There was also a container of miscellaneous tools that already had showed rust.
It appears the roof was leaking when I first got the unit based on the extent of the damages. What's really upsetting is that no one at this facility told me. What really stunk was having to dispose of the king size mattress and other furniture (which were damaged by the roof leak) at my own cost since there are no dumpsters on the facility. If I would have left those things, I would have been charged again.
Also, there were remnants of skeletonized water bugs. Probably from all the water in my unit. Also, tons and tons of spiders. Neither of which I had before moving my stuff into this unit. Anyways, I figure after about 3 months a lot of the stuff got ruined so I wasted all the rent/late fees/raises. I called the district manager and she never returned my calls. The insurance is useless and won't cover water damage.
Other than a couple of boxes stored in tupperware containers, most everything turned into garbage. If I would have known, I seriously would have given everything away and saved the 250/month for two years and had myself a nice car. Do not waste your money with public storage. I personally feel that the local governments should put laws into place to limit companies like this from charging outrageous fees and take advantage of consumers. When one becomes late with public storage, it's worse than pawnshops and credit card companies combined. This company also will do NOTHING to work with you on any level.

Beware consumers. My complaint: 1/ PS raised my rent 25%, 2/ after 5 months, 3/ with no phone call, email, or written notification, 3/ no one at the front desk could help, 4/ I had to call 2 different numbers, stay on the phone through 2 menus to talk with someone who - you guessed it - says they can't help. They claim they sent me a warning postcard - I never got one (and have read complaints where people had my experience). They say increases can start anytime, basically.
I am frustrated by: the amount of the increase, no warning, the automatic deduction, no help, and how soon it started after I got the unit (I broke my back to transfer into this unit - because it was a good deal). I have been using Public Storage for decades. Other problems - at different locations that I've let go because I didn't want to waste time: 1/Leaking ceilings, 2/a break-in (that involved multiple units), 3/and being charged for a full month after turning in the key on time.
Leaky boxes - I brought in the damaged lids about 8 box lids (that covered about 6-7 feet length) and I was given a tarp to use to cover the boxes. Break in - nothing was taken, however I did not have time to go through all my boxes. I filled out the form as requested. Over charge: I turned in my key and they said I had to pay for the month. I was exhausted, I don't want to get creditors calling, so I just paid for the month, without needing or using the last month. This last issue (auto deduction) verges on them having access to your bank account and taking what they like. I feel this is dangerous to the consumer. I am going to take my account off auto-pay. This is a warning to other consumers. Research other companies before you store.

After TEN years of renting from Public Storage, I had fallen behind a month because of medical problems. When I called them in July 2014 to make arrangements for the missed June and now late July payment, I was informed that the unit was already posted for auction and that partial payments would not stop the auction, only full payment would be accepted to stop the auction - never received ANYTHING in the mail in regards to the account. I attempted to contact the regional manager in August, prior to the auction date, it took THREE terse emails before he even responded to me, informing me that they could accept the back due rental fees to stop the auction, which was now at three months behind.
The property manager and I had talked on several occasions and she was fully aware that my partner had died, I had a major TIA, and that I was in dire depression and close to simply throwing in the towel, facts I tried to convey to the district manager who was cold and uncaring. I struggled and struggled to make arrangements and even attempted to raise money to go buy the unit from auction myself, but after he told me they generally go for $300 to $400, I gave up because I did not even have $5 to take the bus to go try.
Today I get a note that the unit sold for TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS and now they are demanding almost $900, including a $130 lien fee for sending it to auction. This is plain robbery in my opinion, CERTIFIED WRITTEN notice should be required before auctioning goods, at least a phone call in advance of posting it for auction. When I let it get behind I was told "Don't worry we will work with you, we don't want your goods" and the unit had gone 3 months in arrears before, this was not even two full months, no notice, no phone call, nothing until I called them!
Yes, I most certainly want an attorney to contact me on this! For all the grief, loss of sleep, added depression, and stomach distress they have caused not only me, but, REPEATEDLY after being told time and time again not to call them because they are ill themselves, my 80-year-old parents, my mother was in tears last time! Not to mention all the computer and audio equipment, tools of my trades I lost, and Good Lord knows how much personal family photos and sensitive personal information. Please contact me at ANY time! The facility located in Gambrills, MD 21054 is falling apart. I had 3 - 10 x 35 units since July of 1993 under the ownership of Shurgard. Public Storage "PS" took over the facility over 10 years ago. The local on-site management is great and friendly. Since the purchase by P.S. they have NOT maintained the structure as needed. It needs the following: a) New roofs. b) New ceilings - coming apart because the ceiling is leaking. c) Bat & other types of infestation - several units completely unusable. d) Installation of bathroom for employees - in the past they went across the street to Wendy's, in the spring of 2014 they brought in a Porto-Potty; it's always dirty, hot & smelly. Great way to treat employees.
e) Security - 138 inner units were broken into in the fall of 2013. Solution as of late Spring - 4 outside cameras facing away doors and toward cars only. Resolution is extremely poor. They need at least 6 more cameras. f) Claim of climate control; this infers that either the interior has heating or air conditioning. It has neither, nor are they insulated. g) Public Storage removed all gutters & downspouts. Water falls and splashes onto and in the space if the door is not completely shut. h) Snow removal is almost non-existent. i) Leaf removal is non-existent.
j) Inconsistent rate increases; I was paying $359 for 1 (10 x 35) and $332 each (total 664) for the other two which were connected without a dividing wall (20 x 35). The new rates went up 9.5% on the single unit and 20.5% on the double wide. All of the 10 x 35s were increased by 20.5%. Called customer service and they stated that it was an "Executive Office Decision" and to call my local District Manager - Fred (he's totally useless). After repeated unanswered calls to the DM I reviewed my being there. Best decision for us was to move our business & personal goods to StorageMart across the street. Every 10 x 35 renter has moved out (except one).
In order to entice people to come back, they are renting the units for $261 as of 08-28-2014. This is a drop of 27+% from the original rates and 33% decrease from their inflated rate increase on the single unit. On the double unit it is a decrease of 20+% on the original rate and 33% reduction on their inflated increase. In addition the smaller units are renting for less as well. The rates are lower than they were in 2013 due to poor quality and increased competition.
Public Storage has many customer and employee complaints against them. After speaking with ex-employees in North Carolina it appears that how they treat their employees and manage their properties is the norm rather then the exception. I can use 3 words to express the overall facility located in Gambrills MD - IT's a DUMP! Beware and rent elsewhere.

After paying my bill I later went to my storage unit to find my storage unit taped off. I open the unit and my items were wet. I immediately went back up to the office to informed the office clerk about my situation.
I asked her has the unit that I am renting ever had a history of flooding and she said yes several times. Then I asked why wasn't I informed that the unit I am renting has a history of flooding. She said the had it fixed. And they are not responsible speak with my insurance company. I feel they should have disclosed this to me. There are several units behind my unit that has water damage I was not informed and I don't think that they are going to inform others about their storage unit taking water damage. Then I wait online for over 10 minutes to finally get a real person (Roberta) who tries to tell me that is only a 30% increase and because I can't remember the last 4 digits of my driver's license from 14 years ago she really can't help me (sorry 27/60 = 45% increase over the $60!) and I should be happy about it being so low. We will be finding a better and more customer friendly spot ASAP. I expected an increase, but if you received a 45% increase with any other bill, you'd look elsewhere, too. I went to Public Storage because they are a national brand and I figured they were relatively reliable. I had previously had a space in Venice, CA and had no issues, but I realize now, that's probably because I had that space for less than 6 months. I moved some belongings into a space at a Public Storage facility in Huntington Beach, CA in January of 2014. While I was on vacation I received my monthly "invoice" which showed a $23 increase in monthly rent. I thought this was a mistake since I had only had the space for 6 months. When I returned, I went over to the facility and the employee informed me that the rates were set by the corporate office and there was nothing she could do about it, so I would have to call them, which I did today. First of all, horrible customer service. The agent just spewed out the whole "it was in the terms of your agreement" nonsense and didn't even acknowledge the ridiculousness of raising the rent so soon after moving in. She also said there was nothing she could do about it. She said they sent a letter out to the address on file, which never arrived at my house, so I have no idea if that's true or not. Even still, she further stated that they can raise the rent once every twelve months, so if that's how they treat their customers, I will be moving everything out of there. Ridiculous. I opened a storage unit 10x10 in early 2009. They have since increased my rent with the exception of the first year. I moved in paying $99 for the aforementioned size space and with subsequent 10% rent increases (including a pass on the increase last year that I had to petition for, which they subsequently incorporated into this year's increase) now pay $160. So my storage went from $133 (includes the 1 year deferral) to $160.
At 20.3%, it is pretty steep inflation if you ask me. When I called to challenge the extremity of the increase and request a more reasonable increase, they advised me that I could always move somewhere else. However, Public Storage management also knows that they are not a retail store and it is not merely an issue of finding a competitor with a lower price or better quality. They recognize that aside from the time necessary to relocate your storage, there is substantial expense to move your items to a competing facility, since you will have to rent a vehicle and possibly hire some else to help move your stuff. Their argument in favor of a 20% increase is that it is equivalent to the going market price in the facility. They do this because they can despite the fact that as a REIT, they do not have to pay any federal income taxes.

I was also required to have insurance through their provider NOT my own. He said, "You have to purchase insurance and I have to choose one of the options given!!!" I only had sentimental things of value. Well I was advised I had to vacate by the 11th of July and pay 224 dollars. It is a typical communist corporation that's all about their profits and not customer experience and quality assurance. I bet they made a mint during the recession taking advantage of people that were already down on their luck. "Let freedom ring" is their motto. Freedom to exploit Americans who have already been taken advantage of. I do not pay my bills late and I have a very high credit rating. They simply took advantage of the situation. This corporation is the epitome of everything that is wrong with America. Theft at Public Storage 2710 E. Garvey, West Covina, CA – June 2014. Other tenants units have also been burglarized at this location. I am writing this in the hopes that no one else will suffer the loss that my family has…
• Cameras are ineffective at this property: No side- view – the cameras are not facing the confirmed locations where perpetrators have illegally entered the property. Cobwebs are on the cameras.
• Several cars can enter the property without using an access code as 2-3 cars can enter if following one another.
• Management did not even have access to past videotapes or logs on the tenants who had entered or exited the property via the key codes at the gates.
• Public Storage REALLY needs to look into allowing tenants to use their OWN locks and not force tenants to use the cylinder locks as those are EXTREMELY easy to “pick” by criminals.
• The cameras on the entire property and are useless in deterring theft and useless in assisting law enforcement solve crimes after-the-fact as I was told by Management that the cameras don’t work properly and there are no night vision cameras.
• There aren’t any cameras in any of the hallways or at the entrance of the units located inside of the building.
• Trees are overgrown onto property walls making it easy for criminals to enter the property. They don’t have any barbed wire or any other type of protection from illegal entry.
• The property is located next to a “seedy” motel where a great deal of transients live and congregate. The motel is constantly being visited by law enforcement. This location makes Public Storage an extremely easy target for criminal theft (there’s only 1 business between the hotel & the storage). In addition, there have been several thefts/burglaries at the motel (Five Star Inn, West Covina, CA).
• Your belongings are ONLY protected by your lock.
• The insurance company (Sedgwick/Perfect Solutions) denied my claim due to the fact that the assailants were able to enter my unit by picking/lock bumping vs. breaking the lock!!!
Here are some things I learned from my unfortunate situation:
• In some cases, your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance may cover theft at an off-site storage unit. You should consult your insurance agent to confirm this.• Per Management, all Public Storage locations require insurance when renting a unit. The amount of the rental and insurance STEADILY INCREASE but their insurance essentially useless and a waste of money as most criminals are “pros” at picking locks and the insurance DOES NOT cover this type of crime. The insurance only covers “FORCED ENTRY” into your unit. Unfortunately there are some people who scam the insurance company by reporting thefts that are not valid to get money from insurance companies, sadly, honest people end up suffering for the criminal behavior.
• Check your property often and take pictures every time you go. You will need proof of your property if your unit is burglarized.
• Research the property make sure you know about all safety measures that are in place. Ask law enforcement to assist with providing a crime log for the storage facility you are interested in.
• I have been told that “disk locks” are more secure than the average locks. I had a Master padlock on my unit along with a Public Storage issued cylinder lock and they still entered my storage without forced entry.
• Keep an inventory of all of your items.
• Keep original receipts, proof of purchase, user manuals and warranty documentation on file in case of theft, the insurance company will ask you to provide proof of ownership (keep this file in your home).
• Do some research and make sure that the company is reputable and there aren’t any tenants complaining of thefts (sometimes they are able to remove negative reviews but you should still give it a try).
• It is so disheartening to see that human beings can be so evil as to take a calculated approach to find ways to steal possessions of others who have made an honest living to provide for their family yet the criminals end up benefiting from what others worked so hard for!
• No matter what precautions you take, you could still become the victim of a theft at some point, you can’t let fear prevent you from enjoying your life. I pray that you never have to experience anything like this. God is good, I know He will turn this misfortune around into something good... Have a blessed day!

I am SO disgusted with Public Storage... Ever since they have taken over from SHURGARD it has been a hassle. I have 2 large (garage size) climate controlled units since they opened that location in 1998. After they took over, they raise the monthly rent once or twice a year. When I complain, they will take a few dollars off one unit!!? I have asked them to help me find a unit in the same hall, so that I can get my 2 units condensed down to one. They never have in over 8 years. I am on a fixed income & have serious health problems. The last two years when they've had increases, I have begged them for a break. They do not care. Basically they told me I could move out to another place, knowing that this is nearly impossible. They just hope they can keep all the contents & auction off if I don't pay.
There is absolutely NO reason for these constant substantial increases! I've gone over there & the temperature was way above climate control (that damages stored items!). There was also a nest of dead baby mice & rat poop everywhere, also some chewed, damaged items in my storage unit! I just got another $20 rate increase & I'm sick of this. It's unfair & ridiculous. BUT before you know it, they're constantly raising your rental costs and I don't mean by a little amount either. First time they raised mine was $30.00 a month after like 5 or 6 months moving into their unit AND was never NOTIFIED IN WRITING OF THE INCREASE. Was shocked when I went in, paid it and was 30.00 dollars higher. Asked her what's this, told me a rate increase!!!! Then just recently logged into my account online and looked and after another 5 to 6 months they raised my rate another $40.00 a month this time. THAT'S $70.00 within a year!!!
So much for $1.00 move-in special. They're CROOKS, LIARS and ILLEGALLY UP YOUR RATES!!!! Their rules change every other week to what ever benefits them!!!! Customers, I would like to give a word of warning to any that are considering renting storage space from Public Storage. As a company, they will likely try to draw you into renting with them using some offer that seems pretty reasonable at the start. Then, every 6 months to a year down the line, they'll bump up the rate, citing market rate as the reason. I will note that their idea of market rate is not based on the competition in the area, but on what they feel like they can get away with charging.
Another customer story said they have been a long time client or customer of Richardson Gypsum Supply, Stamford, CT for years paying on time until their mother got sick. She needed surgery for heart so the person needed to go to another state to be the caregiver, etc. Brutal way business, no apology to tell customers deadline or issues no call - nothing for items that can't be replaced stolen or sold by owner. Don't wait on karma or lawsuits to payback damages lost by storage companies. She was always concern with what I was going through, always says please and thank you. I love the months I rented there. I hated to leave. She made me feel like I was already at home. If I need to come back, this is where I would come and I will recommend people to come there. I thank you so very much, Mrs. Trish ** for all you done to help me. Thank you once again.
