I have been with Public Storage since the end of December 2015. My husband and I were sold on a unit because of their winter special that advertised a 5x10 unit for $105.50/month. It had only been a few months before I received a letter in the mail stating that they have raised my rate to over $139.00/month. Because my contract gives them the right to raise rates, I am locked into this situation unless I want to pay for a U-Haul to move my belongings. When I called to make a complaint with customer service, they explained that they knew that people would be angered by the raised rates and that they may lose customers but it was what they were willing to sacrifice. They would not pass me along to anyone else because the company is refusing to negotiate lower rates with anyone. Please do not use this company to store your belongings. They rope you in with a special promotion and then jack up the prices on you a couple months in.

Okay, so on April 30, 2015 I received a call from Public Storage that I owe a balance of around 45 dollars. I didn't know I owed any money because at the time of signing, March 22, 2015, I was told that the amount of 31 and some change would cover my storage until April 30, 2015 and that I could pay a prorated amount, around 25 dollars, and that It would take me until the end of May. Well I said I didnt need it that long and that I will have my things moved out by April 30, 2015.
Okay, so on April 30, 2015, the day I was going to move my stuff out, Public Storage called me saying I owed money. So I didn't understand how so I drove to Public Storage on April 30, 2015 and talked to someone about the situation and told them that **, the property manager, had told me that the money I paid March 22, 2015 would take me to that very day, April 30,2015. So that employee had me wait until ** came in from viewing the property to talk with her and she told me I owed around 45 dollars. I told her I didn't have it on April 30, 2015. I will have it on my payday, May 5, 2015, and asked how much I will owe then. She said, "Around 57 dollars."
Now I am up because I was told as long as I moved out by April 30, 2015 that I would owe anything. But anyway I told her, "I will be there to pay the 57 dollars on May 5, 2015 and move out." She said, "Okay." So today is May 5, 2015 and I went to the Public Storage to pay and move out. Now they talking about I have to pay close to 200 dollars and now I am really angry because I was told, "Around 57 dollars." So the lady was trying to help me get the situation resolved. She gave me a number to call this man named **. He has the worst ability to work with customers. I mean, this man hung up in my face and told me he isn't calling ** about the situation because it's her off day and that he can waive the fees but won't. This place sucks and I mean this man sucks. So I hope that no one who reads this rents to that place, let alone talk to the sad, horrible employees.

Went to Public Storage two weeks ago and was told about the $1 first month rent promotion and was told to come back when we were ready to fill the space. Agent told me not to rent today, "wait until you are ready to fill it up". We went back this weekend and the same agent told us 'no we don't have any $1 rent space at this building. We have space but you have to pay full price" we were told. We asked if she remembered differing us from two weeks prior and she said she did but could not help us with the promotion that was advertised on line as well as on the three large window clings on the office.
I got the DM's name and number and called him and told him about the issues we had and he will not return my calls. Stay away! There are too many good honest businesses to associate with than to waste time with a company that does not care about their customers. They over promise and under deliver.

I had a 10' X 20' unit from about April 2014 to November 2104. They illegally auctioned my unit on November 22, 2014. It was illegal because they never sent me any notices (postcards, registered or certified letters, etc.) to let me know they were doing it. They are now trying to play hardball and not settle with me - they think that by not responding I'll go away. California's Self-Storage Laws make it clear. They MUST notify you via certified mail.

We had a storage unit in Fremont for 2 years. We moved to Hayward Storage and after only 5 months, our unit has been broken into twice. We had a lock supplied by public storage replace twice and found that any key works on that lock. Also we replaced with two locks and the Public Storage lock was removed, the second lock was still on unit. We have had things stolen from our Hayward Public Storage. The soonest I get our stuff out I will. Wonder anyone else has been broken into?

Out front, they have a sign, 1 dollar first month rent and on their internet site also. Then when you're inside they say based on availability. Then they have you buy their special locks and won't refund the purchase when you move. 30 dollar paperweights. No going back.

They stole all my stuff and when asked the manager she became very distraught and she then showed me how you can break in. The insurance is a scam and they even have an ABC about people stealing from their units. Everything is gone!!! I filled out a police report and they told me how there are so many more reports on this place. Why don't they have cameras? I truly believe it was the manager ** that stole my stuff. The district manager could care less and it is just an awful place...just awful!!! Stay away and read all the horrible reviews and watch the ABC special. They are thieves!!!

I received a letter notifying me that my unit rental price was going from $132 to $152 -- after only having the 5x10 outside/no climate-control unit for 5 months. Fortunately, I was able to move/sell all of my stuff and close the account in mid-month. OF COURSE, THERE IS NO REFUND -- having paid for April -- as stated in the contract, and there is no recourse for dealing with these types of greedy business practices.

I have had a Unit at Public storage for about 4 years now. When I moved in the rent was a little under $100 per month. Now 4 years later it is up to $149.00. I guess they don't value good customers. I will be relocating as soon as possible. Horrible business model. Now they will have to re-rent it at a lower price to somebody else, and give them the first month for $1. Look elsewhere, and ask how often they increase their rent.

I originally signed up with Store All, I loved the facility. Management was outstanding; the place was kept so clean, floors were polished every day, it was truly a pleasure going in this place. 3 years later it was bought by Public Storage, they don't maintain the place anymore. It's now dirty and full of mold, I suspect they don't keep the air conditioning at the standards they're supposed to. The change is drastically, from one extreme to the other. There is never an attendant to talk to anymore when you go into the facility. It’s the worst, can't wait to get my stuff out of there, even though it's a lot of work and it’s costly to move all my stuff.

I have had my personal belongings stored with Public Storage since 2012 and I always pay before the monthly rent is due and they have raised the prices every year and I am now paying almost $200.00 a month including $8.00 insurance. You would think that Public Storage would appreciate their tenants that have been with them a long time and at least seemed concerned when you call them to talk about the increases.

I have had a storage unit with North Star Storage in Minnetonka, MN for years. It was a 5 X 5 unit and total cost to me was $39/mo. Unfortunately, the location was not ideal for me. So I started looking around and there was a 5 X 5 at a the Public Storage near me for $51. I figured I would bite the bullet since it was more convenient. Actually, the price to upgrade to a 5 X 8 was only a few bucks more so I placed a hold on one and set an appt. to meet with the PS rental agent.
When I arrived at PS she showed me the unit and we went back and I signed the rental agreement. But she did everything she could to upsell me -- like larger space, boxes, bins, plastic floor liner, a lock that they recommend for about $18 and they need to approve any other lock. But what really sent me over the edge was she placed a card in front of me and said, "Here are the different insurance levels. Which level of coverage do you want?" The coverage levels were between $3000 and $5000 and I believe that the cost was $11 - $15 which sure jumps up my monthly overall cost.
I said, "I don't want any insurance" and she responded, "You have to. It is a requirement of the rental agreement." I told her that I was through with all the BS and nickel and dime crap they try to charge and walked out. Fortunately I never gave her my credit card. But just to be safe I called and made sure that she was not going to send me a bill. While what they do may be legal, in my opinion it is unethical! MY ADVICE IS TO STEER CLEAR OF PUBLIC STORAGE!!!

From August 2013 I rented space at the Public storage on Broadway and Hollywood in Chicago. I made monthly payments until May of 2014 which I paid the month of June in advance because I was traveling out of the Country. All my belongings and those of my children were stored in the storage (I had just moved from a 3 bedroom house) ranging from living room, bedrooms furniture, my babies items from bath to everything, TV, computers, DVDs, professional photography cameras, stereos, shoes, clothing, suitcases, DVDs, duplicating machine, then I returned later in July 24th 2014 because I was bereaved. I called the Storage to make a payment on August 30th. They said I was late because my unit was put on auction in beginning July and Sold on August 27th. I asked “how come?” They said I was over 60 days late as their policy demanded. They claimed I had not made any payment since May.
I did clarify that I made June payment in May and that they had put my storage on sale before the 60 days timeline. The storage agent checked and confirmed I did the June payment and asked that I speak with the manager. I called him severally and he never returned my call. I asked another friend to call and he explained to my friend that I was 3 months late. My friend mentioned that it was sold on 51 days and was put for auction way before 30 days. When my friend insisted that he checked the records to make sure I made no June payments, he was shocked I did after verification and now started saying their policy was 30 days not 60 days. My friend said “we would go to court”, then he responded “the storage was auctioned at 100 dollars” and that I owed the balance of 190 plus fees since my payments were about $145 a month.
I had begged to get the contact of who the storage was sold to so as to get my certificates and other important documents and the storage declined to give me. I felt this was intentional knowing that the manager had gotten twice in my unit to see what was inside and will not disclose exactly how it was sold and to whom. They never sent me any auction notice.

I was at U-haul storage for 3 years and in that time they raised my rent 5 dollars a year. When I moved I got a storage unit from Public Storage because it was closer to my home. I've only been there for 6 months and they raised my monthly rate by 24 dollars! I wrote a letter to them and they just sent back a generic letter reading "because of our operating costs we have to raise the rent... blah blah blah!" They get you in there, lie to you and tell say you have to buy insurance when my home owner's insurance already covered it. They make you buy their locks - you can't bring your own. (U-Haul I had no problem bringing my own and they didn't try and sell me a lock). They also pressured me to buy protection wrap. Stay away! Once they got you in, they raise the rent within 6 months!

I prepaid for an entire year of storage and halfway throughout the contract. They jumped the monthly price up without me knowing. With my final month left they called and told me to pay the month or get my stuff out by the end of the day. (Got the call at 4:00 pm). Had I known that my final month would've been spread out over the last 6 months due to a increase in rent I would've gotten my stuff out immediately. To be spoken to like I've just skipped out of rent when in reality I paid for an entire year up front is ridiculous. They said they couldn't even let me get the stuff out the following day unless I paid for the month.
The customer service for clients that have never paid late and obviously didn't know about the discrepancy that wasn't even their fault is terrible. The least they could've done was give me an extra 5 hours instead of treating me like I wanted a month free and like I had tried to skip out on paying for months on end. I will never use them again and I would be aware that if you do your pricing could be jumped up even though you agreed to one price.

I'm a domestic violence survivor who lost ALL my property, including my car, when I escaped the violence in my home. I purchased a new luggage set and gradually started purchasing clothing and other items to help me begin to build a new beginning. I'm on SSI due to several disabilities, and each purchase equals enormous sacrifice of food or medication. Every item stored was brand new, placed in plastic storage bags, and further stored in the new 5 piece luggage set. I added moth balls and cedar to each bag and zippered all bags. Periodically, I'd check on my belongings, cleaning out any debris that may have come in from other units. I also sprayed my small space with insecticide, even though I was assured, upon signing the rental agreement, they used pest control monthly and stated that "no one has ever complained about bugs or mice."
A few weeks ago, there was a death in my family. I went to my storage unit to retrieve some luggage and warm clothing to travel up North. There were roaches dead and alive crawling all over my property and it was covered with spider webs. As I tried to clean off each bag in disgust, I could not believe what I witnessed inside the luggage. Most of the bags were ripped or chewed open. All of my clothes and other articles were completed destroyed. There were bugs, eggs, and spiders inside the clothing and the lining of each suitcase was destroyed by infestation. Everything was clean, never used or worn, stored properly, and contain no food or anything that would attract pests. Now I am left with absolutely no property. What hurt the most is I couldn't afford to purchase new clothes or luggage and I missed my Uncle's funeral. I am devastated.

Ok we understand that they sell your stuff when you can't pay the bill after a certain time but the unfairness that I received was not for the delight for the customer but for them. The one on York road. If I was anyone who would take time to read this to NOT go to this storage company. They threw my family photos away, seems like to feel good about what they have done because any person or people that value any business just don't do crap like that.
I mean it isn't like they were out anything. Heck they had my items to sell which was fine given the rules and all but we asked if they would save our family photos and they threw them away. Visiting that company cost my family and I irreplaceable pictures of people who died and can't get back. Called the manager and he didn't care of course. Didn't have nothing to say about it. I was injured and while out on medical leave, my State of California employer illegally terminated my position with 27 years tenure. My storage rent got behind after paying for two years on time, I first had to pay $440 to clear what should of been $309 in rental fees. Then the second time I wasn't notified of the auction date or time, the General Manager led me to believe they were going to work with my 30 day request, and the evening before the auction, told me that it was company policy to deny any extension requests regardless of the reason. What is wrong with our representatives?
People, I implore you to not vote for any individual who has ever been in office. If we vote all existing incumbents as they come up for reelection, none will be so powerful that a "rookie" will be run over. They'll figure it out, it's not as complicated as your existing representative wants you to believe. And it shouldn't be. They no longer represent the people and it's time we collectively put a stop to it. This is just one example of bad laws protecting corporate and government official's own self serving desires. One official responsible for the so called California "Tenant Bill of Rights" was the son of a wealthy property owner venue who got himself elected for the purpose of aiding his family's business operations, using his wealth to get elected. These are bad laws, unconstitutional laws, and representing the constitute is the last thing on their mind.
They sold my life for two months past due garage style locker space when I broke my arm. I'm 53 years old, worked since I was 16, paid a lot in taxes, followed the law and was discarded like yesterday's leftovers from the sheriff's department, who lied about a fast tracked eviction that took place after I mentioned to my landlord I would be filing bankruptcy to HELP me insure I could pay my rent, when they became fearful that they wouldn't be able to remove me if I didn't pay the rent.
To the Sacramento city parking authority encouraging officers to push the envelope on issuing parking tickets to pay for a sports complex, issuing tickets for time prior to my actual arrival time, to using grant funds to pay for a local health department employees salary who did not perform the described duties, because the employee actually doing the duties was already paid under a grant for another program. This is after the entire grant funding was redirected to the local health department after coincidentally having a local heath executive appointed to the State program that administers the Federal grant funds, and who planned to return to the local organization, bow endowed with millions to offset the reductions to the budgets under Obama Care. See the complicated web these officials weave using your tax dollars as their own personal checking account?
I lost my position while out on medical leave because they saw a way to get me out of their hair, even knowing they would lose eventually, but also aware that the taxpayer would pay the bill for their intentional illegal practices. Don't even start me on term limits, something I actually am against, but the majority wanted it and that is our governing process, I accept this, but not your elected representatives, they are elected to different districts when they term out of one. My home was under three different district numbers in 7 years, but neither I, my home, the street, or my res representative physically moved, just the district map.
If a law is found to be against what the government official personally wants, they simply change it to accommodate them and not the people's interest. This clear theft of my property without due process is a violation of my constitutional rights and shows that my destitution at 53, can, and will happen again and again. Get them out of there before it's too late!

I'm so dissatisfied and sick of dealing with corrupt businesses w/ sales associates not interested in their clients and only want money, money, money. It turns out corporate will only give me a 20.00 adjustment. The worst part is that the things in storage aren't even worth 5$ but their sentimental value is beyond appraisal due to the fact that they were given to my wife and I. We rented a 10x40 regular unit from Morningstar Storage, Around November 2013 Public Storage acquired a majority of Morningstar properties, we rented another unit, a 10x10 climate-controlled unit around December 2013. We repeatedly found the temperatures above 90 (often cooler outside than in the unit), and in one case at 32 and below during a cold spell. We complained repeatedly about paying for a climate-controlled unit and not getting a climate-controlled unit. When we moved out to a more reputable storage unit provider this month we were told the HVAC for our climate-controlled unit was just fixed, so for a year or more they knowingly collected money for a climate-controlled unit while not providing a climate-controlled unit. The statement by the site manager is an admission to fraud, as it indicates they knew they were charging for something they never intended to deliver.
At no time did they offer to move us to a unit that had working HVAC, nor have them offered to compensate for the difference. They simply collected for a climate-controlled unit knowing that the unit they rented did not have working HVAC and thus was not climate-controlled. Upon recent google research we found a case in Charlotte NC (Trott vs Public Storage) which details that maintenance issues with all public storage faculties is part of a nationwide corporate cost cutting agenda, and our problems are not unique to the location where we rented our unit. The condition of the property where this storage facility is at is in terrible condition and confirms everything that is detailed in the Trott vs public storage case.

Stay clear of Public Storage (the self-storage company with the orange logo). My personal experience warns: do not fall for the $1.00 rent special by Public Storage, don't be bullied by high pressure sales tactics rooted in corporate directives and goals, review all invoices for inaccuracy, do not purchase the twice-the-price $18.99 padlock as required (its not). Finally, measure your storage space before you rent. I paid for a 10 by 15 Public Storage space. When measured the actual dimensions were 9 by 14. Put into perspective, that's 17 square feet (11.3%) less than advertised, or 133 instead of 150 square feet. Bottom line; don't patronize Public Storage (the mini-storage company with orange logo) for your self-storage needs. Find a more reputable mini-storage company and come supplied with a tape measure and a mindset to resist any high-pressure tactics.
Follow Up: What I have since discovered from Public Storage by speaking with Public Storage Regional Sales Manager for Las Vegas and Arizona Region, the Las Vegas District Manager and the local manager is that they aren't interested about any of the above and will refer you to their contract which states space configuration is only an estimate. Imagine, a mini storage company whose business it is to sell "space" knowingly errors by 11.3% of actual size. I would suspect that if all 2,200 Public Storage facilities with an average size of 45,000 feet differ by as little as 5-10%, it adds up to enormous corporate gains in the tens of millions of dollars.
Since I initially wrote this review additional information has come to light that reflects on the entire Public Storage Corporation located in Glendale, California. I am now convinced the entire 2,200 Public Storage facilities are run under the same "consumer be damned" attitude, and ALL Public Storage facilities should be avoided at all costs (your cost).
At this time I have an appointment to speak with the above referenced managers. At that time I will report how Public Storage Corporation deals with the outright fraud that I have uncovered. Until then I suggest you do not patronize Public Storage and find you're a reputable mini or self-storage company. If anyone reading this review has similar instances I would be pleased to hear from you to establish a class action law suit against Public Storage.

The local people that work there are very nice but they say the district manager doesn't care about the customer or facility management. The women working there are in their late 60's early 70's and he asked them to get on ladders to clean out the building gutters! Seriously? They charge top dollar; mine just went up 9.1 percent. My personal property, including furnishings were auctioned on January 27, 2015. I've been storing with Public Storage, since mid 2004 -- longer than 10 years, at their facility in Tucson, Arizona. I live in Los Angeles, California. Due to a bounced check in December, the first time in 10 years, my things were auctioned, because late fees and liens fees were assessed. I informed the office worker that they could merely re-deposit my check, but they did not. Thus, the payment I made in January applied against the December rental. And, when I attempted to make a payment in February, I was informed online that I owed 53 cents, because my possessions were auctioned on January 27th. Now, previously in January, I called John **, the regional manager in Arizona to ask him to waive the liens and late fees assessed in January. He never returned my voicemail.
State law requires that Public Storage send you a written notification, twice, that your items will be auctioned -- I never received these 2 notifications. In addition, auctioning the personal possessions of a long time customer, ever, seems unconscionable and beyond the 4 corners of any written contact. I'm going to pursue this legally and looking at all the complaints, it seems like Public Storage should face a class action suit.
Additionally, how predatory, insensitive, cold and cowardly of the individual who bought my items at the auction, to not be open to talking to me and returning my items. I've spoken with the Senior Vice President for Public Storage, Pete Panos and sent a letter to the CEO, Ron Havner. Public Storage now says they will send my personal belongings to my address in Los Angeles, at their expense -- my concern is if I receive these personal items, will I be waiving their liability for my other furnishings. I'm going to contact a lawyer, first thing Monday.

First off, the "manager" at public storage told me that insurance was "required". I asked to see the lease, and no, in fact, insurance is NOT required. Not by the terms of this lease. But WTF, the lease does provide, in many places and in all caps, that public storage is not responsible in any way, shape, or form for damage to my property while at the storage site. So if public storage has no risk if my property is damaged, why would they required me to protect myself? It is their way to jack up the rental rate by $15 (minimum). I asked the "manager" - do you tell all of your customers that insurance is required by this lease? Who instructs you to do so? And I asked her, too, if the rental rate is $15 more than the rate they quoted, why not just tack on the additional $15 rather than try to trick me into paying for something I am not required to buy and don't want?
Another trick: The lock. She put the lock on my unit before telling me I had to pay for it. And for this -- a lie about the insurance and a trick about a cheap lock, I had to pay her an "administrative fee" of $22. For the record, I have a good enough income I can easily cover this minor monthly rental fee. I am just having serious issue with being treated so poorly. I have serious issue with the "manager" blatantly misrepresenting the lease (which does not require insurance) (and if it did, I think public storage would be obligated to tell you up-front that this is part of the rental rate) to people who may not know how to read leases. I dislike being scammed. I regret deciding.

It is important to let the members of the public to know that Public Storage company is dubious and HEARTLESS. I am writing this review with a broken heart. I put my household stuff in one of the units of Public Storage facility located off Departure Dr. in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2011 due to house foreclosure. Since 2011, I have paid my monthly rent for the unit. Sometimes, I pay with late fees, giving them additional money. This January (2015), I didn't make the rent payment due to loss of employment. Guess what? Public Storage has lined my unit up for auctioning on the 24th of February. I am struggling so hard to make this payment but Public Storage doesn't want to hear that, neither are they willing to work with me. Shame! Shame!! Shame!!!

Do not go here. They were the most expensive but closest to my home. I was told by employee that my unit would be painted and cleaned prior to move in - also to include wire mesh on top. 6 months have gone by and they increased my bill by 15% and unit was given to me filthy and still no wire mesh. The employees of this store tell me that they mgmt does not care about employees or their customers. The facility is dirty - ALWAYS. I got an email from the NEW Dist Mgr who said he had no authority to keep my bill the same - 330.00 but would put the wire mesh on the unit and will pull ALL of my stuff out and paint it. Is he out of his mind?
So I am shopping all storage facilities and find they have the worst reputation. Dist Mgr said, "Too bad about the rate increase." I was told that the mgmt picks people and increases at random - I was picked. I am moving out the end of this month. I had to threaten them with the Fire Marshall to get them to fix the emergency door that would not open. They filed the concrete down and still the door sticks. I find their attitude is rude and their willingness to help is a zero. DON'T GO HERE - GO TO CUBE SMART. I will be doing a YouTube Blog next. In total it is a huge huge rip off especially for a student like me. I was supposed to be paying $34 per month (as per rate online), but now it is $50 per month. At least they should be fair about openly displaying their overall charges and not cheat people who live on budgets and need some additional space. Long story short..went in with the confirmation of 23.00 plus maybe some tax. I was contacted by an employee at Public Storage on Auburn Blvd. in Watt Ave. in Sacramento, CA. On or about January 6, 2015 I was told that my unit was broken into along w/ several others. I needed to come to location to assess the damages. I am disabled without a vehicle so I have not been able to get to my unit as of today, the 15 to January 2015. I went online to see about my insurance that was mandatory that I purchase. I thought maybe I could get the ball rolling.
To my dismay, the first thing that popped up was an undercover story done by my local news cast Fox 40. It is here that I learned of the multiple units being robbed at Public Storages just in the Sacramento and surrounding areas. But the clincher is after 9 mo. & another 12 mo. they have yet to be reimbursed. I certainly hope that this will not be the case w/ me. The other disheartening story I read re: Public Storage units only was how they are making well over a million $ a yr just on the sales of the insurance. There's even a class action lawsuit against PS for their improper business ethics when it comes to the deceptive business practices of selling this insurance policy. I'll write more on my experience w/ Public Storage after I visit my unit.

The greatest insult is that... anyone that signs a rental contract with Public Storage will learn they are REQUIRED to pay for insurance... it's mandatory. Many folks have homeowners, but regardless, whether you want or not, if you find yourself storing your property at PS, you'll be paying a monthly insurance premium. Insult? The cherry on top is when you dare file a claim. First, PS had captured on video four men snapping locks and stealing property out of units. To file a claim, there's a $100 deductible. And God forbid if you have no pre-storage photos or receipts of initial value, it will be an unhappy day for you.
I reported to BBB... and guess what? PS no response. They don't want to respond. Why? They are in bed with this insurance company. Surely someone out there knows a hungry lawyer... willing and desperate and capable of instigating a class action suit. One person, alone, is of no consequence, but if every outraged person that has been forced to purchase useless insurance, a deceptive trick (you are quoted one price, but then once you realize the monthly total it's significantly higher, thanks to this "mandated" insurance).
PS? You're nationwide and powerful. But ordinary folk despise any business that is so devious, it CHEATS customers out of their hard earned money. Since insurance is a mandatory requirement, it must be included in the advertised monthly rates Since your special lock is the only "approved lock," that cost must be factored into the initial cost to rent a unit and let's allow a public forum of anyone that's had damaged goods and attempted to make good on this "insurance" and it will expose the most offensive and unethical aspect of all. My property has been ruined by water that poured through the ceiling. I won't bore you with the sad details, only I will mention that I have a new found purpose and mission in life... and that is to expose behavior that is unethical and illegal and hold the criminals accountable.

Check your state's self-storage laws. All of the self-storage companies must abide by each and every requirement to be covered under the law. In most states, they are required to send you notices both by regular mail and by registered or certified mail (most importantly this one because it verifies that they sent it and you received it). Without this critical piece of information, the auction is deemed illegal and you have the right to sue for damages and the value of your items. I am suing public storage in va now for an auction they conducted on my unit-and with no certified mail or registered mail receipt to prove they contacted me.

I asked for clarification and police reports, etc. She was unable to provide anything except the number for her manager, Michelle. Public Storage does not make police reports. Owners must do that. When I called the police, they informed me that a report has to be filed in person. I called Michelle (manager) all day and left multiple messages. No return call.
I called the Tomball Public Storage office several times requesting a return call. Nothing. Our son-in-law who lives in the area went to the facility and took video and sent it to us. Shocking! Back window shattered, glass everywhere. Every compartment emptied and our personal belongings strewn all over. Camper door wide open. The people who run this storage facility have zero customer service. The vehicle next to ours had a shattered window. Evidently, crime is a problem at this facility because they seem to have a standard response "I’m just a fill-in". They don't have the desire to communicate with us regarding our property loss. Burgarized @ Vanownen Ave Canoga Park, CA Public Storage - I rented a 10' x 20' unit after checking out the location's website reviews that were positive at the time. There were no negative reviews about thefts at all. My unit was burglarized the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and most of an entire house of furniture was stolen. Two other units were burglarized that night and when filing the police report at the office the next day, I'd heard there were other thefts just 2 weeks before. This location has only 4 exterior cameras, according to an employee. In my opinion, this Public Storage location is not secure and should be avoided at all costs. There are no interior security cameras, again according to one of their employees, and no direct alarm to the police when outer doors are pried open which is the apparent case here.
It seems strange that such an unsecured property has NO negative reviews and makes me wonder if a number of other renters in this facility have been duped liked me, thinking their possessions were secure. I'd be interested in talking to an attorney about a possible class action suit, with the other renters there who've been affected by theft in recent years, to see if there's been any owner fraud involved with regard to their online reviews which distort the reality of what's going on at that location.

The property manager called me later that evening to confirm, but I missed the call. I called back and left a voice mail to confirm that I would be coming in Saturday to move in. When I got there, less than 24 hours later, they had rented my unit to someone else. The manager offered me a larger unit for $50 more a month and said it was their last one. I took it because I needed to move my stuff out of my house. I contacted the district manager, with whom I was able to negotiate the price back down to the original unit cost. But then every month, the invoice I received had the higher price. MULTIPLE REPEATED emails asking to correct the invoices ended up typically unanswered and eventually with me paying only the agreed upon amount. Which in turn let to me accruing late fees, which then had to be waived (more emails!), and finally Public Storage notifying me that they were increasing my rent by $100 a month!! They said the contract is only month-to-month and they reassess the rent after a few months. Seriously?!?!
I moved out and into a different storage facility for a fraction of what I was getting charged at Public Storage. Not to mention the unit they had use in had cracks in the concrete walls that allowed moisture in. I definitely will not be giving them any more business, ever.

I moved from a house to an apt and required storage. I was moving my stuff out of storage that was further away from my current residence and decided to call Public Storage. When calling any storage facility, the first thing they ask is "What are you storing?" After I let their customer service representative know that it was sports equipment, such as 2 bikes, and surfboard, he offered a 5x5 locker at $60. I was excited about it and agreed to come and see it. After I scheduled an appointment, I got a call directly from the facility to confirm my reservation and go over the key details such as what I will be storing and the locker that I am coming to see. The next day, I took two of my bikes and went to the facility to sign the papers and put some of items into storage.
To my surprise, I was told that the locker that I am there to see requires a ladder and further more if I want a locker that is ground level, I have to pay 3 times the price that I was quoted. I was polite and tried to explain the situation that very much felt like "Bait and Switch". When I tried to explain that I feel that I was lied to, the manager did not want to hear anything that I had to say. Her explanation was that since the unit doesn't work for me, she can offer me the one that is 3 times the price. I explained that I came there because the customer representative and I spoke about the items that I need to store and both agreed that I need a ground level storage unit.
After I hung up with the customer rep, the woman from the facility called me 2 minutes after to confirm what I will be storing and the unit I will be coming to see. They got me to come there with my items under false pretenses and used the "Bait and Switch" method to try to get me to agree to a storage unit that is significantly more expensive. I tried to explain why this is wrong and she kept cutting me off by saying "You don't understand" while speaking with her hands and pointing at her head. I work in sales and if I was ever to behave like that with a client, I would be fired. When requested to stop saying that "You do not understand" and instead try to help me by possibly offering me a better deal, she refused.
I offered the names of the sales individuals that I have spoken to that offered me the price and the time of our conversation, as well as asked to pull up the recordings of our conversation, to which she continued to obnoxiously speak to me with her hands and claim that I don't understand their policy. I have called Corporate offices to file the complaint, where I was given the name of the regional manager. The regional manager does not bother to answer his phone or return his messages either. When I called the corporate office again, I was told to deal with the regional manager, Eduardo, who obviously does not bother to call anyone back, even though I have left him voice messages for 3 days.
The corporate office points fingers at the managers and managers don't care to do anything. I have never had a manager speak to me with their hands and not bother to solve the issue. No one at the company is held accountable for their actions. Even though I had names of the individuals I spoke to, the manager nor the corporate cared to hear it. There are plenty of small businesses that deserve the business before Public Storage. Stay away if you don't want to deal with uneducated idiots that lack common sense or customer service skills.

Driving over a plastic sheet is something I heard for the first time and unsure if illegal. I defended on the basis that the car may skid and hit the front wall. Later on I was told that I needed to clean the floor in a way I got it (such as brooming, spot cleaning etc.). The padlock was twice more expensive than one can buy from store, but the manager said I needed to use the exact same padlock they carry. I asked politely again and she said, "no, it can't be done." I said "fine please cancel my parking spot for $58 per month." She then proceeded to say that there were a couple of options. By then she had lost me and I was out the door. My cousin went up to the location by my bad recommendation and signed up for a spot and they charged her $80 for first month rent. Within 24 hours she called to cancel and they said that they could not refund any money as they have a strict no refund policy. She had not parked her car there and they would even consider a partial refund.
We found out the name of the manager Larry who was waiting for the call and basically said the same thing- "no refunds, if you give in to one customer service issue you will have to give in to all." He was also rude and had zero customer service skill. When I asked him from a confirmation on my space being cancelled he said that the only way I could cancel was to go back to the office and ask for a cancellation receipt. I rented a 10x20 space at Public Storage at 8733 Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh, NC in August of 2012. In October 2014 I had reduced the amount I had in storage and made arrangements to move into a 10x10. In the process of moving I realized that three of my triple laminated, furniture grade storage units I had assembled were significantly damaged by an active termite infestation. They also destroyed a cardboard box that was on the floor (fortunately just pots and pans within). There was also a significant infestation of large, black carpenter ants. When I inspected the smaller unit I had reserved, it had two termite tunnels on the wall.
I was informed by a wood destroying insect inspector that the state does not require treatment for these facilities. I think most consumers would assume that they can place furniture or boxes on the slab as you would in a slab on grade home. Because I observed mud tunnels in two storage units I think it is reasonable and necessary to require that these facilities be treated and maintain contracts that will ensure those that use these facilities will be made whole if damage occurs. I suspect that the drywall in these units may well be significantly infested.
I calculated the material cost of replacement at $768.01 based on Home Depot pricing (calculation document available) and when I went to file a claim, realized that the insurance they required would only pay $250 with a $100 deductible for vermin damage, or clearly insufficient to even pay for the material, let alone the labor involved. I think that Public Storage is negligent in several respects and they have refused to do more than help process the insurance if there are problems.
My concerns: I assumed that Public Storage would have a pest agreement that would not only insure that this type of destruction would not occur, but that if it did that some entity would be financially accountable. They obviously do not and do not even spray the perimeter given the infestation of ants. I assumed when I found the damage that Public Storage would do the right thing and take full responsibility and they will not. They have no plan to disclose the infestation on this site to renters and likely this is a problem that potentially extends to other sites. My situation is the tip of the iceberg. Renters should be able to place furniture and boxes on the floor as they would in a slab on grade home or be informed that that they should not. I consider the amount the insurance offered in the inadequate policy and the insult. I posted as a review on their web site and they have not shown it.

Public Storage preys unfairly on people who are desperate moving and in need of storage space! They nickel and dime you with extra fees and then charge you for a full month of rent when you move out after the 6th of every month! While this is 'their policy' this is an unethical and morally wrong policy! Moving is painful enough without a bottom feeding, opportunistic company taking advantage of others.

My family has been a customer since 2003. A few years ago, they increased our rent from $75 to $95 without notice, and not too long ago, they increased it to $115/month (again, without notice). All of our payments are through auto pay, therefore, it is automatic each month. The manager at the Public Storage on Belleview in Denver called and told us that the payment didn't go through. So, I did a manual payment online. The next morning, we were unable to enter our storage and was charged $220 cash to enter even though we told him we have already paid. Keep in mind that my dad (who does not speak English) made the payment. The manager did not give him a receipt and when I called to talk, he hung up on me and refused to return the money. This was not the first time this happened, a few months ago, we got a call that they were going to auction our storage. I had to and the manager was not cooperative and rude. I told him that our rent was automatic each month, therefore, if he did not receive our payment, it is his system's fault and that he should look into it. He again, hung up on me.
I called back only to be greeted by the answering machine, so I left a message and told him that if any of our things are auctioned, I will sue the company. A few months after that, our storage was broken into. We have insurance on this storage, so they said that they would do an investigation. It has been over a year and we still have not heard back from them. We thought about switching storage on multiple occasion, but this storage is the most convenient. I'm very disappointed in the way management is handling the situation here at the Belleview Public Storage in Denver. The manager here definitely take advantage of the fact that many of his customers do not speak English. I DO NOT recommend this place. It's a total SCAM.

We went down to TN, from MI to pick up our things from the storage unit, only to find out they had auctioned off our unit the week prior. They placed a lien on our unit in July and never notified us. The 5 payments we have made since then was being applied to the monthly rent and not past due balances, so they claim they had the right to auction off our unit. Every time we made a payment via the internet, the amount given was not included in the total. If you call to make a payment, they charge $25 so we choose to make payments online. When we did call September and spoke with a customer service rep, he never notified us then either that the unit was in a lien status. He stated the payment we were making at the time would put our account in good status. So instead Public Storage, left the lien on unit, continued to collect my 5 additional payments, just to auction it off two weeks later.
We lost EVERYTHING! The only amount remaining on the bill was lien and late fees of $150, that we were not aware. $30,000 worth of stuff sold for $1,600 with only a $150 balance... WTF. We went to TN with 2 trailer loads and 2 van loads. When we moved back we were only able to take 1 van load. The rest ALL gone. Our kids are devastated. They lost everything they owned after 17 years. Seeing all these complaints, I don't understand why nothing has been done with this company yet.

I was visiting my elderly mother and my brother in Baltimore MD from August 1st to October 15. I paid Public Storage in full for a storage unit. For days before October 15 the local as well as nation weather reported there would be strong to severe storms with tornadoes possible. These storms were coming from the direction I was going to drive to so I decided to wait for the storm to pass on October 15. I did not think it would be a problem to vacate my unit first thing the next morning. I went to my unit on October 16 and vacated the unit, made sure it was clean and notified the employee. The employee checked the unit and said it was fine and he would give me my vacate papers.
I asked if I owed anything for vacating the following morning and he said I owed $108 for the remainder of the month. I was stunned and asked why I was being charged for the rest of the month. The employee said it was in the contract I signed. I said, "It's only a matter of hours I overstayed and only due to the storm." I live on a fixed income and did not have it in my budget to afford renting the unit for a longer time. They make people pay for something they are not getting and using the contract to extort money from people. I would not mind paying for the extra day but not anymore. At this point they are adding late fees and continue to bill me from future months when I am not even there as I live in Florida.

You have to buy a lock from them for 20.00, there is a 'convenience' charge to pay over the phone of 20.00 and you have to pay insurance from them (15.00) unless you have a specific type of insurance which you have to prove to them with more paperwork. I was late the first month by 7 days and had gotten numerous calls from a VERY rude and pushy woman. This past month I was late by 12 days and have had my lock cut off. This is nuts!!! I STRONGLY encourage anyone who is considering Public Storage for their storage needs to reconsider and find a company that actually cares about it's customers. While this location (Public Storage Property # 23055, Arlington Heights, IL) does have friendly staff, this company is not about customer service or working with people PERIOD. I rented a unit in March 2014, paid 3 months up front and then fell behind in September and now October. I lost my job and have absolutely $0 income, have depleted my 401k and have been scraping up money here and there to make payments here and there as I can (I've started babysitting for family members who are paying me to do so).
In any case, my unit is scheduled to go on the auction block in two days, less than 2 months after I feel behind in my payments. I owe them about $200 which includes late and lien fees. Everything I have to my name besides my car is in that storage unit and this company REFUSES to work with me despite my efforts to show that I am trying and WANT to pay my storage fees. On top of that, the call EVERY SINGLE DAY which I see as harassment considering they clearly know my situation. They also harass my mother (b/c I put her down as EMERGENCY CONTACT) on a daily basis even though I've demanded twice that they stop calling her. Just today, Samantha called me yet AGAIN asking me when I planned on paying and to remind me that my possessions would be going up for auction on October 23. She then had the nerve to ask me how I planned to pay the fees/money I owe them after the sale of my possessions... and twice used the term "ABANDON".
Excuse me, Public Storage, I clearly have NOT ABANDONED my property so stop calling it as such! Someone who has made even small payments and is TRYING to meet their financial obligations with you is not abandoning their life's possessions. BOTTOM LINE, THEY DON'T GIVE A CRAP ABOUT YOUR SITUATION AND THEY WILL NOT WORK WITH YOU SHOULD YOU FALL INTO AN UNFORTUNATE SITUATION SUCH AS UNEMPLOYMENT. The funniest part about this, if I've heard it once, I've heard it 20 times... it was in your lease that you signed (fees, liens, etc). Yeah, I know... I should've NOT SIGNED the lease because I should've known that there was a possibility that somewhere down the line I would lose a job and fall on hard times financially. Yep, next time I'll remember that before I sign any lease. What a load of crap... and, if you're reading this review, make sure you check other consumer review sites out. Public Storage has more complaints than any company I've seen, and it seems to be that people are complaining about the same issues over and over.
Wake up Public Storage, sooner or later people will wake up and go down the road to the next storage facility. And thanks for giving a crap about good, hardworking people who, though no fault of their own, have fallen on hard times. AND MOST ARE WILLING TO PAY WHAT THEY CAN AS THEY CAN... that's the worst part. You are taking from me things that mean nothing to anyone but me and things that are simply not replaceable, as well as all of my winter clothing. Maybe I'll find some of my things at the Goodwill or Salvation Army when I go looking for a winter coat.

She told me they have amazing sale first month free and rent $36 per month vs. $55 per month. I was hesitant but she kept telling me sale will be gone tomorrow and I must sign up. She kept pushing and I gave in, sale of $36 plus $1 per one month sounded very good. I only checked one other storage prior to this one and same unit was $65. I signed up but when she ran my card my receipt stated $51. I was shocked. She said that this is mandatory insurance plus the lock.
I have renter's policy and asked her if I can use it, she said ABSOLUTELY NOT - policy of the Public Storage. She stated that this is one time deal and then I will pay $36, BUT when I got all the paperwork it stated $49.90 per month and only next month at $36. Month at $36 is the $1 month rent plus all the fees!!!! I called few other storage companies and they ALL told me I can use renter's policy plus for $50 I can rent 5x15 unit with no sale. I paid $50 for 5x5 only!!! I called Public Storage immediately and Diane (manager I guess) told me NO refund and plus she lied to my face and said that she NEVER told me I cannot use my renter's policy.
I am not crazy. I asked her twice and both times she said NO I can't use my policy. We had been in the unit for a couple of months and then they increased our rate $25 claiming they increase by that increment EVERY year in July...which I find very hard to believe as at that rate the rent would be about $500 by now. I always paid on time. I called to question it and they pointed out it was in your contract. Read the FINE PRINT. When we went to move out, I had prepaid and then asked for a refund as we were out by the 5th of the month and they would not refund any of my money as they 'cannot' issue refunds. Only company I know of who has no way of returning payment. I find this very hard to believe as the local rep said they could but then the territory manager said they couldn't. Thus, it actually hurts you if you are on top of things. DO NOT PAY AHEAD. Rebekah was nice but the corporate people are all about making money instead of customer service. The Brits have a pejorative term for a person or company that engages in cunning and sneaky behavior that is "technically within the rules of the law but borders on being unethical." It is called "sharp practices." The self-storage company known as Public Storage meets this criteria hands down. I pay all of our bills online through our bank. The bank immediately removes the funds from the designated account and less than 48 hours later the vendors are paid. Last week, I received a call from the manager of the storage facility I use informing me that the electronic check I submitted had been returned due to insufficient funds. I said that's not possible because the bank would not have processed the order if there was not enough money in my account.
That's when I found out Public Storage had taken nearly ten days to process the payment! I quickly came to the conclusion that Public Storage's extreme tardiness on processing my payment was done with the intention to be able to assess me for late fees and returned check fees. The fact the bank has not charged me, too, for a returned check tells me my hunch is correct. By my reckoning this company must collect tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of dollars every month every month from customers. I gave notice last Thursday and our stuff will be out by the end of the month. Public Storage is a sleazy company. Don't do business with Public Storage.

First of All, I would like to say that I'm elated that I finally got whatever is left of my stuff out of pawn/hawk. That is exactly the situation you put yourself in when you rent from public storage. There was a time when I was late and they hit me with a 50 late fee then 100. When I finally got caught up, they raised my rent. When I called the district manager about reducing my rent, she didn't even return my calls. After all the fees and raises, the rates end up being just as high as a pawnshop. It seems like this company is after everything they can get from you. If they see you pay late, they get whatever they can from you, including your stuff. Also, they cut your lock after only 7 days late. Once you pay up, then you have to buy another lock again at around $20. I was also raised twice in two years. My rent ended up being higher than other vacant units in the same facility, same size.
There were also problems along the way with my unit. When winter comes along and there is a snowstorm, many times my unit was snowed in. The plows would shovel the snow into the doors of the units. I called the dm and she acted like it was my fault that the company she hired to plow did this to me. She had someone shovel out my unit, but she was very rude and cold about it.
I thought I would be glad to get my stuff out, but that turned out not to be completely the case. Again elated that I no longer have this noose around my neck. However, things change when it comes time to move everything out. Everything was pretty tightly packed. When I started moving I realized that the roof was leaking into my unit. A lot of what I was storing had to be tossed. A few electronic items that worked prior to storage no longer worked. There were several paintings that had watermarks from flooding as well as mold spots from moisture. Some pieces of furniture had been damaged from water. Our king size mattress had to be tossed. Also, there were pieces of furniture with metal hinges, and the metal hinges were completely rusted. Also a few other metal items that had gotten rusted. There was also a container of miscellaneous tools that already had showed rust.
It appears the roof was leaking when I first got the unit based on the extent of the damages. What's really upsetting is that no one at this facility told me. What really stunk was having to dispose of the king size mattress and other furniture (which were damaged by the roof leak) at my own cost since there are no dumpsters on the facility. If I would have left those things, I would have been charged again.
Also, there were remnants of skeletonized water bugs. Probably from all the water in my unit. Also, tons and tons of spiders. Neither of which I had before moving my stuff into this unit. Anyways, I figure after about 3 months a lot of the stuff got ruined so I wasted all the rent/late fees/raises. I called the district manager and she never returned my calls. The insurance is useless and won't cover water damage.
Other than a couple of boxes stored in tupperware containers, most everything turned into garbage. If I would have known, I seriously would have given everything away and saved the 250/month for two years and had myself a nice car. Do not waste your money with public storage. I personally feel that the local governments should put laws into place to limit companies like this from charging outrageous fees and take advantage of consumers. When one becomes late with public storage, it's worse than pawnshops and credit card companies combined. This company also will do NOTHING to work with you on any level.

They claim they sent me a warning postcard - I never got one (and have read complaints where people had my experience). They say increases can start anytime, basically.
I am frustrated by: the amount of the increase, no warning, the automatic deduction, no help, and how soon it started after I got the unit (I broke my back to transfer into this unit - because it was a good deal). I have been using Public Storage for decades. Other problems - at different locations that I've let go because I didn't want to waste time: 1/Leaking ceilings, 2/a break-in (that involved multiple units), 3/and being charged for a full month after turning in the key on time.
Leaky boxes - I brought in the damaged lids about 8 box lids (that covered about 6-7 feet length) and I was given a tarp to use to cover the boxes. Break in - nothing was taken, however I did not have time to go through all my boxes. I filled out the form as requested. Over charge: I turned in my key and they said I had to pay for the month. I was exhausted, I don't want to get creditors calling, so I just paid for the month, without needing or using the last month. This last issue (auto deduction) verges on them having access to your bank account and taking what they like. I feel this is dangerous to the consumer. I am going to take my account off auto-pay. This is a warning to other consumers. Research other companies before you store.

After TEN years of renting from Public Storage, I had fallen behind a month because of medical problems. When I called them in July 2014 to make arrangements for the missed June and now late July payment, I was informed that the unit was already posted for auction and that partial payments would not stop the auction, only full payment would be accepted to stop the auction - never received ANYTHING in the mail in regards to the account. I attempted to contact the regional manager in August, prior to the auction date, it took THREE terse emails before he even responded to me, informing me that they could accept the back due rental fees to stop the auction, which was now at three months behind.
The property manager and I had talked on several occasions and she was fully aware that my partner had died, I had a major TIA, and that I was in dire depression and close to simply throwing in the towel, facts I tried to convey to the district manager who was cold and uncaring. I struggled and struggled to make arrangements and even attempted to raise money to go buy the unit from auction myself, but after he told me they generally go for $300 to $400, I gave up because I did not even have $5 to take the bus to go try.
Today I get a note that the unit sold for TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS and now they are demanding almost $900, including a $130 lien fee for sending it to auction. This is plain robbery in my opinion, CERTIFIED WRITTEN notice should be required before auctioning goods, at least a phone call in advance of posting it for auction. When I let it get behind I was told "Don't worry we will work with you, we don't want your goods" and the unit had gone 3 months in arrears before, this was not even two full months, no notice, no phone call, nothing until I called them!

The facility located in Gambrills, MD 21054 is falling apart. I had 3 - 10 x 35 units since July of 1993 under the ownership of Shurgard. Public Storage "PS" took over the facility over 10 years ago. The local on-site management is great and friendly. Since the purchase by P.S. they have NOT maintained the structure as needed. It needs the following: a) New roofs. b) New ceilings - coming apart because the ceiling is leaking. c) Bat & other types of infestation - several units completely unusable. d) Installation of bathroom for employees - in the past they went across the street to Wendy's, in the spring of 2014 they brought in a Porto-Potty; it's always dirty, hot & smelly. Great way to treat employees.
e) Security - 138 inner units were broken into in the fall of 2013. Solution as of late Spring - 4 outside cameras facing away doors and toward cars only. Resolution is extremely poor. They need at least 6 more cameras. f) Claim of climate control; this infers that either the interior has heating or air conditioning. It has neither, nor are they insulated. g) Public Storage removed all gutters & downspouts. Water falls and splashes onto and in the space if the door is not completely shut. h) Snow removal is almost non-existent. i) Leaf removal is non-existent.
j) Inconsistent rate increases; I was paying $359 for 1 (10 x 35) and $332 each (total 664) for the other two which were connected without a dividing wall (20 x 35). The new rates went up 9.5% on the single unit and 20.5% on the double wide. All of the 10 x 35s were increased by 20.5%. Called customer service and they stated that it was an "Executive Office Decision" and to call my local District Manager - Fred (he's totally useless). After repeated unanswered calls to the DM I reviewed my being there. Best decision for us was to move our business & personal goods to StorageMart across the street. Every 10 x 35 renter has moved out (except one).
In order to entice people to come back, they are renting the units for $261 as of 08-28-2014. This is a drop of 27+% from the original rates and 33% decrease from their inflated rate increase on the single unit. On the double unit it is a decrease of 20+% on the original rate and 33% reduction on their inflated increase. In addition the smaller units are renting for less as well. The rates are lower than they were in 2013 due to poor quality and increased competition.
Public Storage has many customer and employee complaints against them. After speaking with ex-employees in North Carolina it appears that how they treat their employees and manage their properties is the norm rather then the exception. I can use 3 words to express the overall facility located in Gambrills MD - IT's a DUMP! Beware and rent elsewhere.

After the separation between my ex and I, we agreed to share a storage unit. He had large amount of belongings, I had very little. But all that was priceless in my life, documents and pictures from the beginning of my life and most sacred - my children. And that is all i really cared about. Three years had passed. I told him it was him to get my things, after all i was tired of paying him more than half the cost for the last two years. This was six months ago. He agreed. Well, three months ago he had a massive heart attack and died. I went to public storage and asked for some kind of help. Three weeks ago everything was auctioned off. I asked them for help. They could care less.

My name Pakal, I rented a storage unit in Phoenix, AZ address 11236 N 19th Ave. When I rented the unit a month ago in July while filling out the contract they did not disclose to me that the storage unit 0169 had a history of flooding. Well, on 19 Aug 2014, on rainy day I went to pay my bill for extending my storage date to the end of the month. It was raining really hard today. The manager was there and she was very rude to me. After paying my bill I later went to my storage unit to find my storage unit taped off. I open the unit and my items were wet. I immediately went back up to the office to informed the office clerk about my situation.
I asked her has the unit that I am renting ever had a history of flooding and she said yes several times. Then I asked why wasn't I informed that the unit I am renting has a history of flooding. She said the had it fixed. And they are not responsible speak with my insurance company. I feel they should have disclosed this to me. There are several units behind my unit that has water damage I was not informed and I don't think that they are going to inform others about their storage unit taking water damage. I think that it was unlawful for them to rent these units without disclosing that unit floods when there is heavy rain. I need some help with this. I also took pictures. I will never rent from this storage place ever again.

We have had a storage unit with Public Storage for 14 years. This month I get a notice that our rent is going up from $60 a month to $87. I called the local agent, Julie, who said they don't have anything to do with it. Then I wait online for over 10 minutes to finally get a real person (Roberta) who tries to tell me that is only a 30% increase and because I can't remember the last 4 digits of my driver's license from 14 years ago she really can't help me (sorry 27/60 = 45% increase over the $60!) and I should be happy about it being so low. We will be finding a better and more customer friendly spot ASAP. I expected an increase, but if you received a 45% increase with any other bill, you'd look elsewhere, too. Too bad they didn't care about keeping a long time, consistently paying customer.

I went to Public Storage because they are a national brand and I figured they were relatively reliable. I had previously had a space in Venice, CA and had no issues, but I realize now, that's probably because I had that space for less than 6 months. I moved some belongings into a space at a Public Storage facility in Huntington Beach, CA in January of 2014. While I was on vacation I received my monthly "invoice" which showed a $23 increase in monthly rent. I thought this was a mistake since I had only had the space for 6 months. When I returned, I went over to the facility and the employee informed me that the rates were set by the corporate office and there was nothing she could do about it, so I would have to call them, which I did today. First of all, horrible customer service. The agent just spewed out the whole "it was in the terms of your agreement" nonsense and didn't even acknowledge the ridiculousness of raising the rent so soon after moving in. She also said there was nothing she could do about it. She said they sent a letter out to the address on file, which never arrived at my house, so I have no idea if that's true or not. Even still, she further stated that they can raise the rent once every twelve months, so if that's how they treat their customers, I will be moving everything out of there. Ridiculous. AVOID this place.

The insurance company had a "can't help you" attitude and said employee theft is not covered unless there's visible signs of damage. Public Storage also had a 15% price hike in the middle of my lease. They require you to get their insurance which is a scam in itself. SKETCHY!

I opened a storage unit 10x10 in early 2009. They have since increased my rent with the exception of the first year. I moved in paying $99 for the aforementioned size space and with subsequent 10% rent increases (including a pass on the increase last year that I had to petition for, which they subsequently incorporated into this year's increase) now pay $160. So my storage went from $133 (includes the 1 year deferral) to $160.
At 20.3%, it is pretty steep inflation if you ask me. When I called to challenge the extremity of the increase and request a more reasonable increase, they advised me that I could always move somewhere else. However, Public Storage management also knows that they are not a retail store and it is not merely an issue of finding a competitor with a lower price or better quality. They recognize that aside from the time necessary to relocate your storage, there is substantial expense to move your items to a competing facility, since you will have to rent a vehicle and possibly hire some else to help move your stuff. Their argument in favor of a 20% increase is that it is equivalent to the going market price in the facility. They do this because they can despite the fact that as a REIT, they do not have to pay any federal income taxes.

I was also required to have insurance through their provider NOT my own. He said, "You have to purchase insurance and I have to choose one of the options given!!!" I only had sentimental things of value. Well I was advised I had to vacate by the 11th of July and pay 224 dollars. On top of that, they also make you pay a fee for using a automated system. 224 dollars for just this unit and they are literally two separate units by garage door and wall. I only needed 5*5. I attempted to call the district manager on 2 occasions and never received the call yet.
It is a typical communist corporation that's all about their profits and not customer experience and quality assurance. The employees are more concerned about their next cigarette break with a red bull and cheese puffs than taking care of customers! Also, when I went to check-in to give notice to vacate, the rep was fully aware I was going inside the gate but held me up waiting for someone else whose gate code did not work. Freedom to exploit Americans who have already been taken advantage of. I do not pay my bills late and I have a very high credit rating. They simply took advantage of the situation. This corporation is the epitome of everything that is wrong with America. Theft at Public Storage 2710 E. Garvey, West Covina, CA – June 2014. Other tenants units have also been burglarized at this location. I am writing this in the hopes that no one else will suffer the loss that my family has…
• Cameras are ineffective at this property: No side- view – the cameras are not facing the confirmed locations where perpetrators have illegally entered the property. Cobwebs are on the cameras.
• Several cars can enter the property without using an access code as 2-3 cars can enter if following one another.
• Management did not even have access to past videotapes or logs on the tenants who had entered or exited the property via the key codes at the gates.
• Public Storage REALLY needs to look into allowing tenants to use their OWN locks and not force tenants to use the cylinder locks as those are EXTREMELY easy to “pick” by criminals.
• The cameras on the entire property and are useless in deterring theft and useless in assisting law enforcement solve crimes after-the-fact as I was told by Management that the cameras don’t work properly and there are no night vision cameras.
• There aren’t any cameras in any of the hallways or at the entrance of the units located inside of the building.
• Trees are overgrown onto property walls making it easy for criminals to enter the property. They don’t have any barbed wire or any other type of protection from illegal entry.
• The property is located next to a “seedy” motel where a great deal of transients live and congregate. The motel is constantly being visited by law enforcement. This location makes Public Storage an extremely easy target for criminal theft (there’s only 1 business between the hotel & the storage). In addition, there have been several thefts/burglaries at the motel (Five Star Inn, West Covina, CA).
• Your belongings are ONLY protected by your lock.
• The insurance company (Sedgwick/Perfect Solutions) denied my claim due to the fact that the assailants were able to enter my unit by picking/lock bumping vs. breaking the lock!!!
Here are some things I learned from my unfortunate situation:
• In some cases, your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance may cover theft at an off-site storage unit. You should consult your insurance agent to confirm this.• Per Management, all Public Storage locations require insurance when renting a unit. The amount of the rental and insurance STEADILY INCREASE but their insurance essentially useless and a waste of money as most criminals are “pros” at picking locks and the insurance DOES NOT cover this type of crime. The insurance only covers “FORCED ENTRY” into your unit. Unfortunately there are some people who scam the insurance company by reporting thefts that are not valid to get money from insurance companies, sadly, honest people end up suffering for the criminal behavior.
• Check your property often and take pictures every time you go. You will need proof of your property if your unit is burglarized.
• Research the property make sure you know about all safety measures that are in place. Ask law enforcement to assist with providing a crime log for the storage facility you are interested in.
• I have been told that “disk locks” are more secure than the average locks. I had a Master padlock on my unit along with a Public Storage issued cylinder lock and they still entered my storage without forced entry.
• Keep an inventory of all of your items.
• Keep original receipts, proof of purchase, user manuals and warranty documentation on file in case of theft, the insurance company will ask you to provide proof of ownership (keep this file in your home).
• Do some research and make sure that the company is reputable and there aren’t any tenants complaining of thefts (sometimes they are able to remove negative reviews but you should still give it a try).
• It is so disheartening to see that human beings can be so evil as to take a calculated approach to find ways to steal possessions of others who have made an honest living to provide for their family yet the criminals end up benefiting from what others worked so hard for!
• No matter what precautions you take, you could still become the victim of a theft at some point, you can’t let fear prevent you from enjoying your life. I pray that you never have to experience anything like this. God is good, I know He will turn this misfortune around into something good... Have a blessed day!

I have 2 large (garage size) climate controlled units since they opened that location in 1998. After they took over, they raise the monthly rent once or twice a year. When I complain, they will take a few dollars off one unit!!? I have asked them to help me find a unit in the same hall, so that I can get my 2 units condensed down to one. They never have in over 8 years. I am on a fixed income & have serious health problems. The last two years when they've had increases, I have begged them for a break. They do not care. Basically they told me I could move out to another place, knowing that this is nearly impossible. They just hope they can keep all the contents & auction off if I don't pay.
There is absolutely NO reason for these constant substantial increases! I've gone over there & the temperature was way above climate control (that damages stored items!). There was also a nest of dead baby mice & rat poop everywhere, also some chewed, damaged items in my storage unit! I just got another $20 rate increase & I'm sick of this. It's unfair & ridiculous. After 6 months to a year down the line, they'll bump up the rate, citing market rate as the reason. I will note that their idea of market rate is not based on the competition in the area, but on what they feel like they can get away with charging. Public Storage claims to give 30 days written notice of increases of the charge and any fees, but I have only ever received notification by email very shortly before that increased charge was due. On top of this, if you do not pay the increased amount by the 6th of the month, they will lock you out of the area where your items are stored until you are up to current, including any increases to charges or late fees that they have made in this manner. In short, you have lost access to any of your items past this point unless you pay their increased charges.
I first started storing items in a 10' x 13' unit with Public Storage in Oct 2013, with an initial rate of $171.00 from their advertising. What their advertising did not mention is that the $96.90 was listed in their system as a discounted rate, but with a higher rate already in their system. Since this time, I have had my rates increased progressively over the years I've been with them to a current rate of $161.00 per month, and a late fee that increased from the one listed in the contract of $0 to the current late fee of $37.20. The only notification of increases I've ever received from them on the increases to rental rate have been by email, and no notifications of an increase to the late fees until they've come up.
It is possible that this lack of notifications is because of some break in their system. Perhaps there is a flaw that doesn't update the mail address for notifications, even if you update it in their system. If so, this is still a problem. I've called a few times on their corporate line just to make sure my information was current. It is, but this has made no difference in receiving any sort of notifications.
To give you a better idea of just how much of an increase this is, I have had my rates on the rental go up by over 100 percent since Oct 2013. This is 100 percent increase over 1 month. The late fees have apparently also increased since 2013, though in this case, the increase is a little over 80 percent. All told, I'm paying 80% more than when I started this thing, all because Public Storage felt they could get away with charging it. When I checked other companies in the same area, the rate for the same size storage unit is currently between about $$95-$155. None of them came close to what Public Storage claims is market rate. Public Storage claims that market rate is somewhere around $178.00 in that area, even though they list a lower rate for new customers.
Public Storage figures they can increase the rate each year, as they figure most people will just pay the extra rather than dealing with the hassle of moving their stuff back out. And for those that can't pay the increases, well, Public Storage has some hefty lien handling and sale fees that they add on as well, taking those and the additional rent and late fees they'll also charge on the items that can't be recovered until they get paid. Those fees come out of the proceeds they get by selling whatever is in that storage unit. If for some reason the sale doesn't make their total of fees, Public Storage will still charge you the additional amounts, too. What this means: If you are late in paying, and you are unable to catch back up, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR ITEMS, and you will be charged more for the privilege of letting them sell off the contents of your storage unit for them to collect on those inflated fees.
Short form of this, stay well away from Public Storage. They are a greedy company out to gouge you for as much money as they feel they can get out of you, with a particular target painted on long term customers. If you've been with Public Storage for years, they figure you will pay whatever they insist is the rate rather than moving.
This is why I got behind my payments and what they have done to my storage right now to the day of May 30.14. My keys were misplaced. I have health problems and we were unable to pay the bill first back in. The death of my fiance was why I had to put my stuff in storage. I was homeless when I move back home for 4 mos. Was terminated from my job. I got a lien letter stating a lien was placed on my account and that payment had to be made in full by April 28th. My whole life is in there, including my grand-children's toys, clothes, memories, EVERYTHING. However, I was always in contact with the people at the Public Storage location to let them know what was going on.

I've called a few times on their corporate line just to make sure my information was current. It is, but this has made no difference in receiving any sort of notifications.
To give you a better idea of just how much of an increase this is, I have had my rates on the rental go up by over 66 percent since 2009. This is 66 percent increase over 5 years. The late fees have apparently also increased since 2009, though in this case, the increase is a little over 58 percent. All told, I'm paying two thirds more than when I started this thing, all because Public Storage felt they could get away with charging it. When I checked other companies in the same area, the rate for the same size storage unit is currently between about $90.00 to $130.00.
If you must use a storage place, do not use Public Storage. Stay far clear of this company for your own good. Tell your friends to stay away. Tell companies to stay away. Share this message on social media, in your email lists, on your corporate newsletter. Let Public Storage know that they cannot treat customers like this in the only way that they will listen to, by reducing their profits. Take away their paycheck, because they certainly haven't earned it. Don't rent with them. If you are already renting with them, find a way to stop using storage, or go to another storage company. It will be worth it. Stay with them, and you'll find yourself wondering why you didn't listen.

I was never notified by registered mail, email or in person of the pending sale (Florida law). They just sold my things! They are dishonest with their prices, as I made arrangements to vacate, told them and was STILL charged for an additional month. My keys were misplaced and it is literally impossible to get an answer at their facility to see if they have been found. No matter what time I go by there or call, there is no one answering or they are "out to lunch". I purchased insurance through them and get a letter in the middle of my stay saying they changed companies and now I have to purchase more? I have health problems and we were unable to pay the bill first back in November. I got a notice stating that my belongings would be auctioned off on January 28. The Friday before I was able to pay the amount in full. I stayed up on payments until March because I was in the hospital and was terminated from my job the day I came out. Before my account was even delinquent I got a notice stating my account would go to auction April 28th if payment was not received. I did not default on payments UNTIL March 31st, but on February 21st (my account was not delinquent and I paid before the 31st day to avoid the lien). I got a lien letter stating a lien was placed on my account and that payment had to be made in full by April 28th.
I paid march 2 my account would not have been delinquent until March 3rd. When I called they told me no lien was on my account as of March 2nd when I made the payment. So I couldn't understand why I got a letter of a lien if I wasn't delinquent yet. On March 31st however, I finally became delinquent and they are still auctioning our stuff on April 28th. Our whole life is in there, including our children's toys clothes, memories, EVERYTHING. I offers to pay $50 if they could push the date back another 30 days then I would pay it in full with my first paycheck from the job I just started. The guy I talked to said he could do that, but then today they told me he doesn't think they can do that because Delaware has strict laws. I find that hard to believe because the last time I had 60 days and this time I got 28!

Public Storage is taking advantage of its customers. I have a storage unit with Public Storage in Virginia. And they have raised the rent every year around 10% (I have had the unit for 7 years). They always say that the new rate is below the market rate. How can inflation be averaging about 2% over the last 7 years but the rental rate has gone up 10% per year? Public Storage knows it is super inconvenient to change storage locations so they keep raising their rates after people move in ... which of course resets the market rate and the whole cycle starts over again the next year. Definitely should be some legal or legislative action regarding this. I am surprised that current consumer protection laws do not cover this.

Prior to storing many valuable items at Public Storage on Monroe Dr. in Atlanta, I had never put anything in storage. And I can promise that I will never store anything again. Due to health problems I was having at the time, I fell behind on my 53.00/month storage fee. However, I was always in contact with the people at the Public Storage location to let them know what was going on.
As soon as they told me I was behind on the rent of the unit, I tried for an hour to pay online and it wouldn’t allow me to pay. That was actually on New Year’s Eve at 11am and I left a message that I needed them to call me immediately so that I could pay. No call back that day and the following day was a holiday. I admit that I forgot about it mainly because I figured they would call back wanting their money. Due to the fact that they failed to call, all kinds of charges were added to my account. I was unfortunately very ill for both December and January, but I still called Public Storage figuring that knowing I was keeping in touch, they wouldn’t continue to add charges to my account. I was wrong and the next time they told me my balance, I didn’t have the money to pay the enormous and ridiculous fees that had been added.
I didn’t think that telling people I didn’t know what I was putting in storage was a very good idea. However, it never even crossed my mind that without giving me any chance to pick up my things, they would auction all of them for undisclosed amount. The amount of rent I had fallen behind amounted to 106.00. I was at no time told that they would be bold enough to go into my unit and go through my things when they had no reason to think that I wasn’t going to pay for the rent and late charges. It simply wasn’t right and more importantly; I don’t believe it was legal.
I should have been given the opportunity to pick up my things. There was an additional lock put on my unit to prevent my access after 30 days. I spoke with the manager the morning of the auction after they had left me a message just the previous day. I told him that I would willingly pay the ridiculous charges on my account on no later than 2/20 (one day) if he would not auction my property. He said he couldn’t promise, but he would do all that he could. Knowing that there was nothing forcing him to sell my things, I thought they would be there the next day. I called to pay on the 20th only to find that they had supposedly sold 18,000.00 worth of property for $200. I literally almost fainted! I thought he was joking. He wasn’t and I know they made a fortune on my things!!!
I was verbally told the auction would be at the end of February. The 19th isn’t actually the end of the month. Nothing came by mail!! Although I believe that suing people is somewhat cheesy, I have to sue these idiots. The best part by far is that they sold every piece of spring/summer clothing I own in addition to every pair of spring/summer shoes. The whole thing is a complete scam and there is NO customer service. Next I'm going to file this with the Better Business Bureau!

My monthly accounting shows every month payments, sometimes partial, but always in contact. I have always kept my home belongings in the unit size of 10x15 paid to avoid such drastic actions. I had to move to CT from CA over the past year due my parent's fatal illness. ** had left the facility and recently I have been talking with another rep.
I found one rep named **, to be a liar and a thief. The last time I received any communication from him was on Dec. 31st, New Year's Eve, in my phone record. I wondered why he was calling so late at night, I had just paid Public Storage $350 on Dec. 11, and was still behind. He said I would get a late fee on Jan. 1st and wanted to let me know. I said okay, fine, as long as it is not going to auction, please let me know so that does not happen. He said no that is not the case. When I called to pay my bill in Jan. he said my unit was already auctioned off a month ago. That means he lied to me on the phone.
I was not notified by mail, email or by phone of this auction date. I was in shock when he told me and wrote an account summation and story to the district manager asap. I am now pursuing a lawsuit. I had over $45000 worth of my home items. Framed and unframed art, mirrors, antiques and a full unit of home belongings. I would have rather suffered through a tornado, or natural disaster than to know that heartless human beings stole my belongings. I have hope that the law will be on my side as the company is only supposed to recoup their rent not thousands of dollars in my life's belongings. If your payment is not posted by the 5th of the month, you are charged a $ 25 late fee. If your payment is not received in a number of days after that first lateness, another fee is added. Their fees are usurious. I feel like I am dealing with racketeers rather than a professional, licensed company. I attempted, one time, to make an electronic payment and it appeared to be valid, considering Public Storage is a national company. However, this was the second instance where they charged me a late fee because my bank couldn't transmit an EFT because, at the eleventh hour, my bank had to make a manual payment since Public Storage is not set up for EFT! Can you believe it?
So, because of the racketeer late fees added one on top of another and their refusal to set up EFT, which I suspect is on purpose to collect more money for compounded late fees, I have a reminder set up to mail my payment by the 23 of each month. The rental unit I speak of originally was a different company and the facility is much better than Public Storage's usual setup. However, after a few years with the original company, a notice from Public Storage stated they had bought the facility and payments were to be remitted to them. Once I got the notice that Public Storage had taken over my storage company, I knew the quality of service would decrease and the monthly rental would increase.
I am now paying 85% more than I originally paid. The cost increase is not peculiar to Public Storage.... Many services and consumer goods have increased prices during these past few years of bad economy. It is just that Public Storage does not seem like a quality company and seems to use racketeering tactics to collect more and more money from their customers and, as far as I know, still does not have EFT set up. Twice I paid on their internet site and was told by the office clerk when visiting the site that they wanted me NOT to pay on the site. This was well before the late fees and EFT fiasco. Public Storage is not customer oriented!

Sure enough, the ventilation unit on the ceiling had leaked water all over a large amount of our stuff. My bed, kids toys, blankets, chairs, and who even knows what else are all destroyed.
I immediately called the office. The guy came down to look and admitted that the guy in the next door unit mentioned the same problem. I told him that I'm sure it has happened before and he admitted that it has. How do they get away with this?! Their contract states they are not liable for their negligence, but when does it become fraud and illegal? My personal insurance covers my property in case of theft, fire, tornadoes etc. But they do not cover a defect from the storage unit.
This is crap! How did they get to be such a large company with the way they treat their customers? People need to speak out about this!!! I am outraged right now and feel the need that something should be done. It appears that this type of neglect and fraud happens frequently. To say the least, I feel people need to come together to form a class action law suit against this company. If not to recover some of the money they lost, then to help people in the future. Nobody deserves to have their personal effects destroyed because Public Storage doesn't do their due diligence of notifying their customers of potential issues or keeping up on their property. If I chose to leave to verify that the information she was telling me was correct, I was told I could not get the special I had reserved online for at least 1 week. I refused to sign the contract as she was going over the conditions with me but because she had charged my card I would not receive a refund if I did not sign this contract. Nor would I if I left and contacted the national Public Storage hotline to find out if what I had learned from her was true.
I felt bullied and extremely distraught after moving. I did not budget the money she was demanding I spend. I felt completely trapped. When I left after not agreeing to the contract and not signing the credit card receipt - I told her I was going to call customer service and find out if what she was saying was correct. She also told me there was no one I could contact above her. I found out there was a district manager named Josh. On my way to a different location, I made reservations with a Public Storage consultant explaining what had happened. He told me I should not go back there and they would honor the special at a different location. I felt much more comfortable.
I called the Parkland location and told her to cancel everything, that we did not wish to rent there and would be renting at the Puyallup location. She said she could not refund my money unless I signed her paperwork. As we arrived to Puyallup before I could even get to the counter, the gentleman said everything was rented, that ** from the other location had called and I could not get a refund or rent in any other location. He said he showed no reservation for me even though we had just made it. They made this as difficult as it could possibly be, everything was NO. I had a load of things I was trying to get into storage before storage with a 10-month-old baby and 3 and a half hours later and a minute before the office closed we finally got the district manager sort the situation out but found errors in everything we were doing.

Our family has had 2 units with the same property in Chesapeake, VA with Public Storage. The first we had to move out of because the ceiling collapsed and was full of rodents and other pests - full of rodents and pests even though they do routine pest control/inspections. Ceiling collapsed because no one was maintaining the property as promised. We were held responsible for the cost of that unit, the cost to move, and the cost of moving into the new unit (no special giving, no pro rate even though in the middle of the month, or assistance with moving items etc.).
We were treated as if it were our fault it happened. We have also been made aware of multiple break-ins on the property by former employees, research with the local police department and speaking with other tenants. There has been nothing done by Public Storage to stop these break-ins or to help those tenants that this happened to. Their famous response seems to be, “Get insurance and it is your responsibility to ensure your items are safe, not ours.”
The management also raised the rent without properly notifying the tenants, but claimed they did. Apparently that is all they have to do is claim they sent something. I paid our monthly rent then realized a week later I have a $20 late fee due to a $10 balance because of this rate increase we were never notified of. Spoke with numerous other tenants and they also experienced the same thing. Management refused to remove the late fee or the $10 increase until proper notice received and agreed upon.
The customer service has always been poor to nonexistent from on site to the district manager (**), even the 1-800 reps. The unit we are currently in is starting to have structural issues including the same ceiling issue as previous unit. Management has been notified numerous times and still hasn't lifted one finger to do anything. The property itself is in shambles, interior and exterior. The current property manager (** - may be misspelled) will tell you she is documenting your account but then never does so later on; it is as if it never happened and your documentation means nothing to them.
I have also spoken with several employees that left the company due to the shady dealings the company was asking them to take part of. I was enlightened on some amazing things - ways they get out of paying insurance claims, not pro rating move outs, raising rent without notifying tenants or signing new leases with increase, that they don't patrol property or maintain property as explained to residents then when incidents happen it is put on residents, there are more break-ins then most know about, the issues with accounts purposely not being documented, they look through people's units more than they should during "routine inspections", and they also help themselves to items when people move out or are evicted which is clearly against policy.
Items are supposed to be auctioned off during the event of an eviction. Items after people move out are to be thrown out, not taken by employees. I am currently waiting for a call back from the supervisor (**) above the district manager to call. This is only after 3 months of calling and emailing with no response from anyone else. My last contact with the district manager I was basically told to stop calling. I would no longer receive any help, as if I was the one bothering them for asking them to do their job that I and many others are paying them to do.
They are not providing a free service. They are being paid to provide safe, clean, and rodent-free structures for our belongings. We are also trying to get our stuff out by the end of this month. Apparently, you have to have your things out by the 6th of the month or they charge you for the entire month, which is another battle I am fighting because I was told by the site manager, aka **, it would be prorated based on the day we moved out regardless of what day that was.

My storage locker was broken into through the wooden wall in the back of my locker, and also when the PS changed the door on my unit. I have filed a police report and an insurance claim. They have refused to pay for 75%+ of my losses, and THEN THEY DEPRECIATED THE REMAINING TOTAL THEY DID ALLOW. This amounts to pennies on the dollar for serious losses of over $8,000+. We need to sue them to get our losses paid for, so it seems. Tell your friends, PS insurance is a scam to get premiums without ever having to pay.

I went to the facility on April 29, 2013 to checkout what happened and I have boxes missing and things were rambled and destroyed in my unit. Public Storage store number 25591 Bells Ferry Road, Kennesaw, GA. This company has defrauded me in the fact that they did not provide adequate air conditioning to keep mold from damaging my belongings. The management chose to operate the air conditioning at 80 degrees this summer which did not remove any moisture from the air. Public Storage has denied any wrong doing and said that it was a company policy not to run the air conditioning at any setting other than 80 degrees during summer months. I was instructed by Public Storage to file a complaint with my own insurance company. I have met with the insurance company and my claim in being denied because the damage was obvious to the insurance company that the damage was not a result from water damage or a fire, to the insurance company, it was caused by the constant humidity within the climate controlled facility.
At this time Public Storage said they have two reports that stated that I caused the problem?? Public Storage is refusing to provide me with any documentation of their findings so that I can provide that information to my insurance company. Public Storage is stating that I caused the damage by how the unit was packed. I find this to be a shady comment on behalf of Public Storage because of the fact is that the furniture was fine for the last 13 years located in the same storage unit without any prior problems. I checked the furniture this last March and it was fine at that time.

Yesterday I moved a number of items out of my storage unit to be photographed for sale. I found a puddle of water near the back of the unit, and water on the base of a recliner chair, and the seat of the chair, under the cushion, was also damp. The manager and district manager told me that "condensation" through concrete walls of Public Storage units was "normal" and would only offer me paper towels to wipe up the water. They do have some form of vinyl to put on the floors, and pallets, but these would be SOLD to me. I am investigating my complaint through legal venues in Oregon, as I was told by a mold remediation specialist that there should NEVER be any water in a rented storage unit. The Public Storage unit only had similar units available and said that all of those units had the potential to have this problem.
I checked the paperwork from them, and there's no mention of this. If anyone else has had issues with condensation inside of storage units and gotten them resolved, I would certainly like to know. In the meantime, I would not recommend storing ANYTHING at a Public Storage brand storage unit. There is also a really bad smell down there, which has permeated all of my belongings. This is not covered in my homeowner's insurance nor would it have been covered in the insurance they sell. I asked them to find out what is being stored in close by units (their response) so I could find out if it could be remedied using ozone (only works on natural things, not chemicals) and thus far no one has found out for me.

I store my motorcycle there & I simply go out the door style gate & put a piece of cardboard so I can pull it open upon my return. I do not agree with "required Insurance" but it’s only $9.00/month. Every PS I have used has bathrooms on site. My initial rate has never increased any time in the past & if it does here I will simply move out. I enjoy having my little garage at PS. I have been a customer of Public Storage in Columbia, SC for 2 years and rented storage units from Public Storage in various locations around the US several times over the last 10 years. This is the first time Public Storage sold me "required by law" storage unit insurance. I am paying an extra $7 per month for this insurance through Willis Insurance, which I totally did not need for my unit. However, I was not given a choice - they forced me to buy it or go rent elsewhere. Hmm... If it is "required by state law", why don't the other storage facilities in the area "require it”?
When I first moved my property into this unit in Columbia, SC, within a few hours, fire ants had also moved in and were totally infesting all my items. When I reported this to the office, they handed me a can of ant spray and told me to go treat my unit. Very unprofessional. I did not rent from them to have ants get into all my personal items. They then tried to sell me one of their special padlocks that cost $17, stating that they have had some "break-ins" and the regular locks are not as secure as these. My thought was "great sales pitch using a threat break-ins on your customers to sell that ridiculously expensive lock!" Hmm... using scare tactics to sell an expensive padlock! I did not buy the special padlock - I refused, stating I am not going to be there much longer. The one I have seems to work fine, and I will keep the basic padlock I have - thank you.
Now, just yesterday, after going online to pay my monthly bill as I do on the PS website each month, I encountered problems on the website once I got to the "review your payment" page. After several attempts to complete the transaction with cc online and the page not clearing and going to the payment confirmation page, I was forced to call Public Storage's 800 number to speak with a representative to try and pay my bill. I was utterly shocked and appalled when she told me she would be charging me a $20 fee to pay my bill by phone! Are they kidding us? I have never encountered a company that charges you to pay your bill by phone! Sounds to me like this company may be in financial trouble and about to go belly up with all the crazy "extra" fees they are now trying to make customers cough up at every turn.
Public Storage in the past has been a good company to rent a storage unit from. However, this experience in Columbia, SC has been a total nightmare! I have found this Public Storage here to be very unethical and unprofessional at best and the experience horrible. I would advise anyone considering renting from Public Storage here to look at the other companies, such as U-Haul Storage, which does not require you buy their insurance and does not require the extras like the specialty padlocks and $20 charges for paying your bill by phone!

But worse is when they stopped the climate control, which is why I chose them in the first place. This is an indoor facility. It is now 105 degrees and 100% humidity in there with no air circulating at all. I figure I need a big time professional, specialized and expensive mover now to move it all elsewhere - and it is so stuffed to the rafters that I cannot possibly do anything without such help. I wonder how they could lure people in with climate control, made to reassure against infestations, turn it off, cause infestations and raise the rates?!
It is so gross in there - with maggots everywhere and eggs; I do not even know the extent. But it is 50 yrs. of family memory and I cannot discard, and it would cost about $150,000 to replace, and much of it never can be replaced. I can only move and then I guess I'm supposed to pay expensive movers and exterminators for all this. I do not know what to do, maybe file with govt. agency and let them investigate. Obviously, there are so many complaints against them. I cannot afford whatever it will be to fix all this and they are totally oblivious and non-caring. I have been renting a storage unit from them for 2.5 years. Rent has increased by 25% during that time. Also, I purchased insurance through Willis, the company they promote when you sign up with them. It had been four months since we visited the unit and as soon as we walked in, we noticed boxes ripped open and clothes missing. We immediately reported it to the front desk and called the Miami PD. While the officer was filling out the report, she pointed out a gap in the wall between our unit and the one next door where you could force your arm through! All the stolen items were within an arm's length of that opening and it was clear that this was how the items were removed.
When we brought this up with management, we were told that all the units are built this way, that the units are exactly as they were when Public Storage bought the building 8 years ago and we are of course the first ones to have ever had this problem! Willis, the insurance company, immediately denied any claim as the lock is intact and there is no visible evidence of forcible entry. Of course, neither Public Storage or Willis wants to answer as to how the property was ever certified and accepted for insurance when, according to Public Storage, every unit is like this and they have been like this since they bought the property 8 years ago.
Bottom line is that all Public Storage will offer is a canned "We are terribly sorry for your loss, if in fact there was one, but we bear no responsibility! Maybe we can cut a little off your rent going forward." Public Storage policy is clearly that your neighbors can steal from you and Public Storage and their insurance company bear no responsibility. There are far better, far more professional companies out there! Find one before you make the same mistake we did. We had over $3000 of clothing stolen and Public Storage has absolutely no interest. I would not be surprised if it was an inside job as surely the employees knew about the gap and from the number of similar theft complaints that I have read, it seems to be quite a racket that they have going.

So I rented a storage spot at the Alsip public storage facility located at 115th and Cicero av. Since November, customer storage spaces have been getting burglarized. I believe my spot was the 12th one to be reported to the police and counting. The company has been aware of this problem but hasn't been doing enough to help the investigation or to secure their property to make this problem stop. In fact, they know exactly how the burglary operation is being done, in phases. The thieves tag lockers 1 day and another day in near future they come back to empty it out. Public storage still charges their customers for storage units while they are tagged to be robbed and after they get robbed. They do not notify properly what has happened or that we have been a victim of theft. They don't beef up security and they know what lockers will be hit next. By the way, the thieves have been tagging the storage bins they plan to come back to empty. They do not prevent the theft from occurring and take everything.
I am suspecting it’s an inside job. In fact, I'm suspicious of the manager based on comment he made as well as his demeanor when being questioned. What he said was the customers that get robbed will lie to the police and insurance company about what they had in their storage bins. He gave some examples of the lies he suspected the victims told. Now, my curiosity was raised because if he wasn't involved himself, then how does he know they lied that those items were or were not in their storage containers? He also appeared disinterested and typed the entire time I was there making my complaint to him and my report to the police officer. They also lied to the police about their policy. They told the police that customers will put their own store bought locks on the bins instead of purchasing them from the company. They claim they can't tell if store bought locks are the process the thieves use to tag the bins that will be burglarized. This is untrue because it is public storage policy that you must purchase their locks for approx $20 and you are not allowed to put your own store bought lock onto your rented unit.
So this is how the process the thieves go about to steal at public storage: First, they cut off the public storage provided lock and scope out the bins. They tag the lockers by putting a store bought lock onto the unit. Then they come back and take everything and they leave it empty or almost empty and leave it unlocked and unsecured. The facility employee will then notice the lock is gone. They put another lock onto the unsecured unit then notify the customer. They don't open the unit to check and if they did, they would notice it empty and a cut lock on the floor inside the unit. The notification I received was very ambiguous and non-urgent. They told me someone tampered with the lock and so they put a secondary lock onto my unit to secure my property. They didn't say the lock was removed completely or cut off or it was missing or that my bin was nearly empty and my property stolen. They didn't say there were dozen or more units that also had tampered locks. They didn't tell me a number of police reports were being made for the units that got burglarized.
However, they did continue to call me for payments and accept my payments for a nearly empty bin. When I found out I was a victim, they did not offer any refund; not even an apology was offered to me. They've been collecting my money to keep my belongings safe and even after they knew I was a victim of theft, they still took my money for a service they already failed to provide to me. The police officer has been there over a dozen times since November. They did not even provide a complete list to the police department about what bins are still tagged with store bought locks waiting to get robbed, or what bins still have the secondary lock that the company put on after they have been robbed. And there are still paying customers unaware they are victims of burglary that are paying for a service that the public storage failed at but are still demanding payments from unsuspecting victims. Public storage did not provide complete account of all the units that were burglarized to the police; however, the police officer urged them they must do an inventory and provide a list and make better effort to notify the customers. People are paying for units that have been burglarized and will keep paying it until they come to collect their belongings and if it’s months or years later, they will have paid money for nothing.
They don't give refunds. Public storage sells the illusion of security. They use video surveillance at the entrance gate with a lock code pad. When I asked the manager about how they view video to help identify the crooks, he said its thousands of hours of video, and it’s too much video to figure out who the suspects are. He did not care that his customers are robbed of their property nor does he offer to be useful to help the investigation. I wanted a refund for paying for an almost empty storage unit but he was not offering refunds to me or anyone that got robbed. In fact, he had been collecting and will continue to collect payments on burglarized storage units, because not all the customers have been told they are victims of theft. If they notify customers of this problem, then customers will stop paying them and some will leave unless they do more to protect people’s belongings. They stand to benefit by not doing the right thing.
The officer who had been responding to these burglaries at the Alsip public storage is Officer **. The phone # **. My police report # is ** but there are about a dozen more police report numbers he had written down on his pad. He warned public storage manager his business is looking very bad and encouraged him to get a complete list of other units that got robbed but not yet reported. The officer said they will add the additional units to my report number so that they won't have to do separate reports as victims become aware that they are victims.
I do not know if this is only occurring at this Alsip public storage property located at 4849 w. 115th street or if others nearby are also being hit. But based upon my internet research, it appears to be a problem at other locations. Some blogs indicate that police have caught the perpetrators and they were inside jobs. Somehow, the criminals were related to employees or had been past employees. The insurance they offer is a fraction of what I was robbed of. I will only receive $2,000 for a bin that contained about $50,000 of valuables. The max amount of insurance they offer is only $5,000. I stored my property there in beginning of September 2012. I moved out of a 2,200 sq. ft. home into a 700 sq. ft. rental property. Now, all of my belongings are gone and I paid public storage to keep my property safe. I will only receive $2,000 to replace it. All my furniture, major appliances, my memorabilia, my children's toys and electronics are all gone. My refrigerator that is gone was valued at $2,000. Public Storage did not tell me I was victim of burglary.
They did not beef up security when this problem began. They did not add additional video surveillance to catch criminals in the act. They failed to secure my property. They did not do anything to stop the thieves from coming back to empty my bin. It was tagged to be burglarized one day and three weeks later, it got robbed and they knew it was going to happen. And it's going to keep happening because they don't care to stop it or to notify their customers that they don't provide a secure place to store your valuables. They want the money so they tell nobody. It’s a major problem that is going on at that facility. Nothing can replace what I lost. Many of my memorabilia have been taken and all of my valuables are gone. They left me a few boxes and bags of clothes basically are all that I have left. This will continue to happen more unless someone intervenes and brings light to what has happened and is still occurring and make the general local public know they are at risk of losing all their things that are stored at the public storage in Alsip and other storage facilities.
I wonder if the thief is stealing from units then they store stolen property into another unit(s) at that same location. My stuff could still be at that property locked up in another unit rented by the thieves or until they sell it and profit from stolen goods. Video surveillance and records should be able to identify who comes to their storage frequently and for how long they are there and how often they come. A pattern may be obvious if they cared to look into it but they don't care. They are not looking into any possibility. It’s too much video footage they said. I think it’s very reasonable and would not require too much effort to determine how the burglaries are being done or who is involved.
Please do a news report and warn the general public that their property is not safe or secure at the public storage, and that customers are still paying for burglarized units, and unsuspecting new customers may become victims if they chose to store their stuff there. They will not be reimbursed for the units they paid for that was burglarized not even after theft occurs, nor will anyone be compensated through insurance claim for their actual loss because they don't offer adequate insurance. It's minimal what you are allowed to purchase for insurance. They told me in September it was unheard of that anything would happen to my stuff so I purchased the minimum amount of insurance. I wonder if that was a lie. They said nothing ever happened there to other people's stuff. You may call me if you need more info or an interview.

When I asked where the joker was who signed me up and told me a refund check will be cut and mailed right out to me, I was told he will be gone for awhile and that I was not being appropriate to call him a joker. I responded, "Either he was joking about the refund or he is a liar, so which would you prefer I assume?" I was then curtly told to call the corporate office but they would not be giving me a refund. On December 1st of 2012, I found a blue lock on the unit. I had already notified the property manager in November that I was not renewing for December as I could not afford the payments anymore and had removed my lock. I had already removed most of my property and just need to get the remaining things in there. The property manager then stated that I had not paid November's rent. I gave them a copy of my bank statement and they claimed that it was not good enough. I notified the district manager that I had already removed my lock on the 1st and was no longer responsible for the unit. Today I received a notice that the unit was being auctioned off and I was responsible for November, December and January. November was paid. I am not responsible for December or January.

On 8/25/2012, I rented a storage unit and the TV ad advertised it for $1 for the first month. The $1 was there + $22 additional for the administration fee. I paid an additional $24.39 on 9/22/2012 as that was an additional fee that had to be paid by 9/28/2012 and the next month's rent would be $108. I was lucky to have sold all my items put into storage by 9/23/2012 one day after I paid the fee of $24.39. On 9/23/2012, I went to the office to ask for a refund as I was vacating the storage unit. The clerk told us there were no refunds so I complained to him and he called the office and was told no refunds. I paid that fee of $24.39 before the due date of 9/28/2012 but that was too bad, you did as they do not give refunds.
On 10/5/2012, I wrote to the Public Storage unit in Ronkonkoma that I actually rented the unit from. Two weeks later after receiving no reply, I called to inquire about my answer to my letter and was told by the woman who answered the phone that it was either forwarded to CA headquarters or it went in the trash. I then called again to get the address for the main office that handled complaints and sent another letter to them on 10/19/2012. I just received a reply on 12/01/2012 stating that I signed an agreement that states no refunds are ever given. I am out $24.39 from paying my fee a week earlier than required but unable to get a refund for paying ahead of time. It is poor business policy and false advertising on national TV. I do not have images but I do have the initial agreement and copies of the two letters written to them and the one reply.

I think Storage Masters in Caledonia, WI is pure evil and I mean that! They are a classic example of how big businesses just gorge themselves on greed like lecherous thieves! They think nothing at all of customers' hardships, circumstances or consequential loss of personal property and they are quick to try to get it auctioned off! I was flat broke and couldn't pay my $55 a month rent on the 20th. Within 13 days, they cut the lock off and charged me $112 for it. On the 14th day past due, they sent me a lien notice, obviously preparing for an auction sale. In less than 3 weeks, my bill went from $55 to $203! I don't think the state of Wisconsin lets them do what they have done according to our laws. I really need to challenge them in court on this one!

I rented from Public Storage in April (the one dollar move in which wasn't $1), but that was okay. I had a couple of late payments but always paid the fees they wanted, etc. In the unit, I put some camping stuff, my DJ system that's worth about $1,500 and the CDS which I had accumulated for 9 years approximately. I had pneumonia in June and got late with the payment. I was called by the management (I say that lightly) and was told I needed to pay the $154.14 by the 25th or my stuff would be auctioned off. I made the payment on the 22nd. I went to the locked unit on the 31st to get some of the camping stuff out as I was getting ready for a trip, but their lock was still on and the management wasn't around to remove it. Mine had been broken off. When I contacted the so-called manager later that day, he told me I would have to buy a new lock for $17.99. That ** right there.
I went back on the 1st, at which time I was told he would not remove their lock until I paid that month's rent. It was due on the 1st. I told him I would move my stuff out. He wanted $1.41 for that day. I gave him $2.00, told him to keep the change as I didn't know that they were in that much financial trouble. When they finally opened my locker, I was shocked as my camping stuff was still there but the DJ equipment was missing including the CD case and to add insult to injury, they used my dolly to remove it with as that was gone too. I contacted the so-called manager, who called the district manager, who wasn't of any help. I then asked about the insurance, at which time the lady in the office threw the insurance brochure to me on the counter. I called and conveniently they cancelled the insurance when I went to be scheduled for auction.
This is a Mickey Mouse operation, they do not care as I have spoken with their VP and he told me, "Sorry, but oh well." I have to replace my DJ equipment at about $1,500. When you put your stuff in a storage, you expect it to be secured. They told me their cameras only go back 7 days. I was in the storage at the beginning of September (the equipment was there then). Why they break your lock off is a mystery to me, then secure it with theirs where anyone can get in it. This is a rinky dink operation, that does not care about securing your stuff or your satisfaction. I wish I knew of ways to get back at them legally, not illegal, like they are. I want to be made whole again, my equipment back or paid for it. I'll take care of the CDs, etc.

The verbal intimidation is that if I violate that verbally-stated new policy, I will give them legal grounds to serve me with a 24 hour eviction notice. I have 3 9 x 28' lockers. I am sixty-eight years old and there is absolutely no way I could vacate if they served me. I have been in a vehicle accident. I've been calling Public Storage since the second week of October arranging to make a payment on what I owed. I had taken out a pre-settlement loan in the same week of said auction I've notified them that the loan was approved and that it would take a couple of days within the same week of the auction. I also had my attorney contact Public Storage to assure them that the payment was on its way in a couple of days before auction date, to no avail. I then went in person to the facility. My balance due was $288. I offered $150 of what I had to at least take the lien off of my property, which was still more than half of what I owed. They declined my offer. I then showed them the pre-settlement approved contract signed by my attorney and myself days before the auction was to take place.

I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and they responded saying that they don't have to refund the late charge they hit me with. This company needs to be blasted on the television news. Back in October of 2011, I rented a storage unit from Public Storage located at 4116 Austin Boulevard, Island Park, NY 11558. I rented a unit that I was told was large enough to hold the contents of a 3-bedroom home. I put most of my belongings (all of my household furniture and other items) into the storage unit. When I went back to this location on August 4, 2012 to remove all my items and have them brought back to my new home, I discovered that Public Storage had done renovations over the Winter and a pipe above my unit had burst and subsequently been repaired. However, they never notified me of this issue and when I went to remove my items, all of my furniture and quite a bit of other personal and household items were destroyed - covered in mold. There were small puddles of water on the floor and I took pictures to document all the damage.
I immediately went to the Property Manager and demanded to speak with his Supervisor. I was directed to Mr. ** who is the District Manager for this location. Mr. ** apologized profusely and assured me that Public Storage would do right by me and would compensate me for all the items that I had lost to the mold damage. He also said that he would immediately stop charging me for the unit and would provide me with another unit (free of charge) to store the other items that were not damaged by the water and mold.
I provided him with photos of all the destroyed property, as well as an itemized listing of everything destroyed with approximate replacement value per his request (a total of over $27,000.00). I waited to hear back from him for approximately 3 weeks and then finally received a response from him this past weekend.
Mr. ** sent me (via electronic mail) Public Storage's settlement offer along with a release to sign if I were to accept their offer. The total amount they are offering me is a measly $5,000.00; however, they also state in the offer that they are offering me $5k minus $637.20, the cost for rental of the two units from 8/4/2012 to present which were promised to me free of charge by Mr. ** until this matter was resolved. I am a single mother of three children and there is absolutely no way that I can afford to replace a whole house of furnishings with $5,000.00
I did some research on the Internet and apparently this is a common occurrence with this company. The have over 700 Better Business Bureau complaints against them and there are horrible reviews about this business all over the net. This company takes total advantage of people by saying that they are providing you with a climate-controlled space where you can store a whole house worth of furnishings and belongings, yet want to limit their liability to a maximum of $5,000.00. How is this legal?
I would very much appreciate someone contacting me as soon as possible regarding this matter. My children and I are sleeping on air mattresses and eating dinner at a picnic table in our Dining Room. I thank you in advance for your time and attention to this matter.

I have a situation with Public Storage. I am moving and took a rug and some suitcases out of my Public Storage unit. Shortly after bringing them into the house, my 3-year-old, happy, healthy cat passed away. Now my other cat is in critical condition at the animal intensive care facility being treated for poisoning. I had nothing around the house that could have caused this and I racked my brain trying to figure out what happened. When I realized the only thing different in the house was the items I brought out of Public Storage, I went to the office at the facility. Ed (who would not give me his last name), said they do not exterminate. He gave me the number for the district manager, Paul **. Paul also said they do use exterminated or treat for pests.
I went to my unit and the entire floor smelled of the insecticide used to spray for carpenter ants. I know the smell well from when I was a child, my parents had the house sprayed frequently. I then opened my unit and looked around. I found packets of rat poisoning that must have been thrown over the top! I called the district manager for the Public Storage facility and he backtracked and admitted they do put rat baits in the units. This cannot be legal. Shouldn't they be using an exterminator and the enclosed baits rather than just bags of poison? I now have lost one cat, the other is in critical condition and the total loss of everything I had in the unit. Not to mention I paid them monthly rent for all this! What in the world do I do?

So I called the 1-800-688-8057 and was advised that my account would only be charged for two days for each unit, and also to follow up with the local manager to advise her that we vacated, which I did. I received my credit card statement last week, and was billed correctly for two days for one unit, but for the whole month on the other. I called 1-800-688-8057 again and spoke to Sheila. Sad to say, under the time constraint, I didn't fully read the lease agreement, particularly paragraph 7, which entirely excludes any liability by Public Storage under any circumstances.
Yes, my storage unit has been robbed to the tune of approx. $15,000 of equipment. Upon being contacted by the adjustor of their supposed insurance company, it was obvious the conversation was really all maneuvering to find what policy loophole would work to avoid any liability of compensation for my loss. The reprehensible business practices of Public Storage may be more acute in densely populated metropolitan areas. I am speaking specifically of a facility at 21321 Vanowen St. in Canoga Park, CA.
The unoccupied and unlocked storage unit next to mine was used to break through the tin...er...yeah, right...metal wall between units. Now that they have raised all their customers' rent, you magically have no option to speak to a customer service rep at their customer service number. The very unfriendly employees at the lot just tell you to call customer service. The only reason we have never moved to a different storage company is because we literally have our entire 1600 sq. feet house stored in our unit, so it is a huge pain to move. The salesperson kept evading the answer.
Finally, the contract was handed to me to sign showing that the rental was beginning on that very day, 3/10/12, and I stated my move-in date was March 28, but I came March 10 as a result of **'s constant phone calls to fill out the paperwork. ** replied I just had a price reservation, not a unit reservation, and the units were going fast. I insisted I was renting the unit as of March 28, showed her the email confirmation stating just show up on 3/27/12 and requested that ** the manager honor that date, especially considering all the errors they were making that afternoon and time I was spending. ** the manager said I would have to come back on March 27 to complete the paperwork if I did not want to be charged for renting the space as of March 10. I left extremely angry after spending much time and money on transportation, and not to mention having the experience of being swindled by the corrupt business dealings of the Farmingdale office.
I subsequently rented a unit at Aspaceplacestorage.com with Noreen ** (manager) and had a completely different experience. Over the phone, she also explained the details of the unit, pricing and confirmed with me my move-in date. On move-in day, everything went smoothly and I have not been overcharged or had any extras tacked on at the last minute. It was an honest transaction and Noreen fulfilled what she offered. Public Storage's website has this definition for what it means to reserve a unit: “We hold the selected unit size and price for you until you are ready to move in. We can make your reservation up to 30 days in advance.”
I did contact customer service (Debra) on 3/13/12 by phone and asked for corporate headquarters’ contact information and was told I was speaking with corporate headquarters. When I requested the name of the CEO of Public Storage, I was reluctantly told Debra **, but was refused the contact information and was instead given Agustas ** (district manager of Suffolk County) to contact. Agustas was prompt with phone calls and offered to rent me a unit at the Farmingdale location, to which I explained I did not trust the employees of this facility and would not risk storing my personal belongings there. He said there was nothing else he could do and I insisted that the business transactions at the facility are not honest and need to be investigated. He agreed and said it was an internal problem, but did not state whether he would resolve or correct the problems.
The business transactions at Public Storage in Farmingdale need to be investigated and the public needs to be made aware of what is required and what is optional so this situation does not occur again. I was fortunate that there was a similar size and priced unit available at A Space Place Storage or I would have had to choose between paying a higher price at another facility at that late date or be forced to rent at Public Storage in Farmingdale and be subjected to their corrupt practices. Please advise **. Thank you for your time.

My name is Khalis **. I stored some items at Public Storage on Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn, NY from late summer of 2011 to February 2012. I fell short on some payments, but nothing serious enough to start an auction. Eventually, I made payments via telephone, mail and internet. After some time, it became difficult to contact anyone from Public Storage via phone. In any event, I had some very personal and important items auctioned off. I have made multiple attempts to have Public Storage contact the buyer and have them call me. No one has reached out to me as of yet. My wife and I have wedding gifts and personal paperwork stored that is now in the hands of someone, which compromises our safety and security. All we want is the buyer’s contact info, either email or phone number, so that we may salvage what's left, if there is anything left at all. An attorney would suffice as well.

wanted to retaliate against me. Plus, the workers and manager are lazy. So I guess they want me gone. Send funds so I can sue them.

I rent a storage, and my rental was robbed. The agent for the storage informed the insurance that she did not see any forced entry and that you would need a ladder to get in from the top. The claim was denied. Well, it's a storage and people store ladders. Also, I showed photos taken by a person who works for James Neal ** in Pasadena, CA of the damage prior to filling a claim. Their cameras do not cover vital areas. The alarms are off as well as the alarm night senors. They even leave the doors open, which allows any and every one who wants to go in and steal things without being seen all night long to do so. So who needs to force entry. I believe I'm not alone.
I went to storage a day ago and found I was once again robbed. Their insurance stated that they will pay, only if I can show forced entry and that finding a different lock on my door isn't good enough. Then they should not be able to make people who rent a storage from them buy the no-can-win insurance. Because if someone sees you open your door to your unit and leave, they can cut your lock off, put another one on for the moment, and act like it's theirs. And the alarm locks do not reset till way later. So again, who needs to force entry into a unit?
Or like I stated, you can just wait till after hours, bring a screw driver, and have all night long to craw through people's things. Again, no forced entry necessary. Most people probably don't even know they've been robbed, because most persons only come once in a while and if they can't find something they are looking for, just think that they have just misplaced the Items or Item that they are seeking because of all the fake security they believe is in place. Also, others are probably out of state, etc.
What can I do legal-wise? If they read this, they will probably change their mode of operation. They charge a lot for no protection. I think they should be served a cease and desist on the fake insurance, be made to return all the premiums charged for the no-win farce insurance, and be held accountable for whoever's belongings are gone by theft.

Public Storage auctioned off my whole life! - I have been renting from Public Storage for the last 3 1/2 years. I admit I have been late several times and several times, they charge me several different amounts of late fees (Examples are $51.40 on 07/10/2009, $211.40 on 07/10/2009, $441.50 on 11/19/2010, $136.30 on 02/11/2011, and $300.00 on 01/29/2011). Those are late fees. That’s not even including our monthly rent, which started at $47.39, never got a dollar move in! That was in "2008", by the end of "2008", my rent was now $232.00 and every month until "2010", now $242.00. Then, from "2011" till now, $262.00.
I have always been late and they made a lot of money off me and even let me make payments because I was falling so behind and could not afford it. If I was late, they would call and ask when I could come to make a payment and that's what I would do and it worked out as well as it could. I have been trying to get my stuff out of there for quite some time now, and every time I thought I was all paid up, they would slap more charges on me. The famous one was when they said they noticed my locks were not on my unit and that someone must have cut them off. Of course, I had to pay for both the locks which I had to purchase from them! And every time I was late, they would cut my locks off again and charge $15.00 to $17.00 to buy the locks off of them because it is some kind of policy they have, just like the pro-rated policy that I never have understood?
I lost track of all the locks I had to buy from them. That's how many there were. So, I made a payment and still had a balance on it, which ** would let me pay on my next bill. I went by there to make a payment twice. No one was there. There on the door was the time they were to return. So I waited, mind you it’s my lunch time, 10 min. go by, then 20 min. go by, I got to go back to work. I called and told her I was waiting and she said she's sorry, she was running late, no problem!
Next day, I was on my way to make a payment and wouldn’t you know it, my tranny fell out of my car! Great, I worked on it for four days straight, then my girlfriend said “Jim, ** left a message saying it’s the 21st. James you were coming to make a payment today, let me know?” I went and called her the next morning and was told it's too late, they sold your storage?
I was so upset, I did not tell my girlfriend and she just found out and has not stopped crying! She would have made a payment on line if we only knew it was going to be like this! Everything, her whole life and mine was in that storage, all her pictures of her kids from infants to well now they are 25 and 29 years old. She just lost her father to cancer and was told he only had a week to live and everything from her childhood, pictures from her dad, was in there. She told me she don't even care about the material things like the moped, slot machine, brand new washer and dryer, antiques etc. It did not matter to her. She would pay anything to whomever to get her pictures back. Those can never be replaced!
We have been together for 11 years now and she is planning on leaving me because of this! I just don't understand why they just up and sold my storage like that. I may have been late but they always got paid and then some. How can I find out who bought our storage? I wish I could sue the hell out of them. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Don't rent from Public Storage! You will regret it, especially the one on Marina Blvd in San Leandro, CA.

I have been paying late for the last 2 years, and I understand that if you don't pay, my things will be auctioned! But since I always pay even though late, it does not give the manager the right to treat me and my wife like dirt! The manager tried all to make it impossible to make my payment today, 2/28/12, before 11:30am. I called since 10:30am and at 11:00am, and the manager told my wife that it's too late and that the people were there to buy my things!
The letter said I had until 11:30am, and she tried her best to delay my pay! I am taking my things out and placing them in another storage where the manager can treat a customer good instead of calling me an irresponsible tenant! I feel that I was treated wrongly and unjustly, but I will do my best to let all not to rent where i rent because the manager rips you off!

My items were auctioned off. When I called the facility to find out what I can do to obtain some personal information I had in the storage, I was told that they would contact the buyer, and it would be up to him if he wanted to contact me. My identity can be stolen from this. How can I protect myself?
