I would like to mention the staff predominantly in this review at CubeSmart #3450 in Romulus, Michigan. The staff, **, are exceptional. Just because of them I would recommend CubeSmart in Romulus. They are personable, inviting, knowledgeable, and will do all they can for you as a customer. So appreciative of them. In terms of the storage facility it could not be more secure and clean. I would be surprised for anyone to come across a better storage facility and it starts with the excellent staff.

The Pierson Road location in Michigan managers have been very helpful throughout the entire rental process. Phone calls and questions are answered promptly. They helped ensure that we received the best rate possible and ensured that our needs were being met by the information given to them on what the units would be used for. I have yet to go to the location so I cannot comment on cleanliness, unit size, etc. It is beneficial that there is someone on site Monday through Saturday. One of the main reasons for the switch is due to overall cost and unit security. Hopefully there are not a lot of rate increases.

Fell for the old bait-and-switch. I was quoted $29, but paid $75 by the time I left. I was also told it would be $35 a month, but that became $55. Complete con artists. Unfortunately, I was stuck and had to use them temporarily. Now I’m desperately looking for another place that won’t con me as badly as these guys did. Don’t believe anything you see online or any quote they give you. Be prepared to haggle when you get there, because what they tell you beforehand is not what you’ll actually pay.

      Reviewed Aug. 31, 2026

We used CubeSmart on 55th Street in Manhattan to store my son's belongings short-term, while he was between apartments. We had come from visiting another storage facility that was horrible, and were so pleased to find the location clean, well-lit, well air-conditioned, and with plenty of carts available for loading/unloading (no waiting!).

There are several large bays for pulling in vehicles (a real boon in Manhattan), and the security seemed good--each renter has a unique code that allows them to access only the floor for their unit. We reserved two units, and a free lock was provided for each. The reservation process was simple and fast, customer service was very accessible both by phone and in-person, and there were employees on-site if any assistance was needed. We moved in at the beginning of August, 2026, and thanks to the fast-moving elevators, we were in and out of there in a jiffy. The unit appeared clean, and we felt confident that our belongings would be safely stored. So far, so good.

But the five-star review stops there. Three weeks later, we came with a van crew to move out our belongings, and at first everything seemed fine. But as the crew started to move out our items, they noticed mouse droppings and mouse urine--everywhere. It was only then that we noticed four packets, one in each corner of the unit (same in both units), that were conveniently turned face-down so we couldn't see that they were rodenticide until we turned them over. We had not noticed them during the first visit, perhaps because we were exhausted...or maybe we just assumed they were desiccant to absorb moisture. When we lifted one of our heavy, rolled wool rugs off the floor, there was a long line of urine and mouse droppings underneath, as well distributed in pretty much any floor space that was not occupied by belongings.

I approached the manager in the office, who seemed totally unfazed by my report. He asked what unit it was, and when I told him, he said that they have a known problem with mice in that area, due to a specific tenant they are trying to evict. He tried to blame the central booking location, saying that the main reservation center wouldn't have known about the mouse problem, so they assigned us to that area---but I didn't make my reservation through central; I made my reservation directly with the store manager!

After unloading and eventually unpacking the belongings at the apartment, we didn't see any visible damage, but clearly the rug (probably both of them, though the other was upright) needs to be cleaned as a precaution. I contacted the manager by phone at that point he said we could file an insurance claim. He never apologized or showed any concern about our experience; he literally smiled as he explained why there was a mouse problem.

It is truly outrageous that we were assigned units in an area with a severe, known mouse problem. That the facility put rodenticide packets face-down in the units shows that they were trying to hide the reality of the situation. The manager's lack of concern was disheartening--his response to just 'fill out a form" (that he didn't have on hand and took a very long time to find) was truly a "not my problem" attitude. Besides being just generally disgusting, mouse droppings carry diseases and their urine can permanently stain items (not to mention the smell). THIS IS NOT OKAY, Cubesmart.

Needless to say, our 5-star experience quickly dropped to a 1-star. If the manager had been at least minimally sympathetic and offered some compensation for what happened, I would have felt a little bit better about the experience. But the fact that they knew, assigned the units anyway, and then reacted without concern, just ruined a potentially positive experience. Mice in storage facilities is not universal--we had belongings in different storage facility for 3 years without any issues. The take away: Great facility, if you seal everything you own in plastic before storing and plan to protect yourself from contamination when you remove your belongings from storage. P.s. The rodenticide packets weren't working. :D

(The office personnel were nice & I was 100% satisfied & thought this would be the best storage place ever!). $82 2nd month for "cc" fees (ok, that it fine, makes sense.)

$116 3rd month and (WTH?! $37 increase!!!) They said they informed me via email and I opened it on x date, so that means I was notified and had supposed 30 days to object! I had to pay it for this month because I didn't object soon enough... Office manager said he would contact his District Manager, that he could approve $92 going forward, until I leave, but for more than that he needed to approval from "District Manager". He said he would contact me to let me know the outcome (which he never did) but guess what, I received an email with rate for month 4...

$92 4th month... (only $13 more a month than they reeled me in for...) Called in, for the record they now gave me "22 days' notice" of the rate for upcoming rate they decided to charge me. They have a special now for my same unit size at the rate they gave quoted me initially. After calling and asking why they were still offering that rate now for this month. He quickly said that is for NEW clients only... After my call, they (He) took the size unit I have off the website for specials... TELL ME THAT THIS IS NOT A SCAM & FALSE ADVERTISING!!!

I proceeded because CubeSmart was easy to reach and, at the time, I expected to need the units for only about six months. Unfortunately, my need for storage lasted far longer than anticipated. Over the past four years, CubeSmart has raised my rent by 102%, more than doubling the original cost. I now pay $626 for these two units, which is nearly as much as I pay for my apartment rent. Do not repeat my mistake. I strongly recommend avoiding CubeSmart at any location; based on my experience, their pricing practices are excessive, predatory, and entirely indefensible.

I am leaving a review specifically of the CubeSmart business in Ukiah, California. It is my only experience with this particular business by the name of Cube smart. I’ve had a storage unit at this facility for 8+ years, experienced three different owners, and can honestly report that in my experience this is the worst ownership experience I’ve had in these eight years. I can also honestly report that the manager of this facility and his coworker are without a doubt the best part of this business. I’ve known Dana the entire time I’ve been at this facility. I’ve known him to be only professional, competent, honest, courteous, considerate, and caring of the customers as well as the business. He has kept the facility, clean, orderly and well-maintained. The entire time I’ve known him to be there. Coworker Brittany I believe has been there about two years now and she is also professional, courteous, and competent. She truly is a delight to run into at the facility.

Anytime you enter the office no matter the problem or concern or simple issue you are greeted with professionalism courteousness and effective outcomes. To be clear, they are not pushovers. They follow a professional and structured business policy and procedure and fully able to deal with negative customer issues with professionalism. Cube smart is truly blessed to have these two employees working in this facility. I believe they are the reason most people have stayed with this company.

Bad experience with Cubesmart-Shirlington. Facility is clean, albeit expensive, but they promise "free" move-in truck as an inducement to rent there. Free use of the truck is likely not a genuine offer. I went there on three different occasions in the last couple of weeks, as a new customer seeking to use their van for 90 minutes to move two large items, and each time visited on a weekday when I knew the trucks were unlikely to be in use.

Each and every time the front desk put me off for a different reason--i.e., you have your driver license but you don't have the $100"cash deposit" that's required, or you don't have the "account number" that was issued (despite my having government issued ID plus the key to the unit and their having a computer to find it at the desk), or it's "too late in the day" at 3 pm to use a van for an hour.

I went there again today, very hopeful that I had met every hurdle, and this time they told me there was a charge of $39.95 to use the van for the 90 minutes I needed, plus gas and whatever incidentals they may impose on top of that. The reason given this time was that 4 days had elapsed beyond my initial 30 day move in period. I pointed out that I had visited on three different occasions in the previous weeks, and noted that the 30 day deadline and all of these other hurdles to use of the van should have been disclosed upfront, as the failure to disclose seemed like a trap for the unwary.

The man at the Shirlington desk blamed his colleague for being "new" and not knowing to tell me all the van requirements up front. He rarely looked me in the eye from his position at the desk, and, knowing that he almost certainly was the one who had trained his "new" colleague, I advised him that I'd rent a van from U-haul instead. He protested that Cubesmart offered a better deal on truck rentals. Floored by this response (after viewing the enormous ads posted everywhere that promise use of a free move in truck), I told him that I'd be moving all of my items out of the Shirlington unit at the end of the month. He then advised me on move-out requirements. Shirlington customer service reps need much better training, or CubeSmart needs to change its corporate policies.

I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere before renting from CubeSmart. There’s a reason they have so many 1-star reviews. My monthly rate increased by $55 even though absolutely nothing changed with my unit or rental. Charging customers significantly more simply because the lease is “month-to-month” feels incredibly unfair. A storage unit shouldn’t suddenly cost as much as a car insurance payment without any added value or notice that justifies such a large increase. There are much better storage options that value their customers and offer more consistent pricing. Save yourself the frustration and choose another company.

I rented a 10x25 interior space, beginning about 2.5 yrs ago when it was a Public Storage, that was an excellent deal, even though I never received my free month promo. Early last year it switched to CubeSmart, and immediately the negative changes started. For one, I came in at the height of summer and it was 80 degrees inside (like today). The whole point of paying extra for a climate controlled space is to protect things in storage which are temperature sensitive. 80 is borderline. In the past 6 months or so, the price has gone up twice. So I am now paying 61% more than when I started. I compare that to another space which I have strictly for business inventory that has never gone up in 7 years.

I additionally just noticed that they are charging a surcharge for auto credit card payments, which was never disclosed and I don't know when it started. In addition to it being 80 inside when I went today, both doors were broken and they had cut the electric feed to the space. That was not something I used, but it was part of the space and now it's not. The challenge, of course, is that a 10x25 space holds a lot of stuff, and so I have to figure out at what point these obvious aggressive increases, scaled back service and lower quality of space make it worth the pain of moving. No doubt the math the new owner or mgt group rely on.

CubeSmart's online system cancelled my reservation with no written notice and then the district manager refused to honor the original rate. On 5/6 I reserved a 10x15 unit online: 1151 East New York Ave, Brooklyn NY, 11212 location; $277.80/mo; 5/21 move-in date. When I clicked into the SmartRental flow from the confirmation email, CubeSmart's system changed my move-in date to 5/7 with no written notice. Then the store cancelled my reservation after I missed a few phone calls which my phone flagged as potential spam - no attempt to reach me via text or email. I only found out the reservation had been cancelled a couple weeks later when I tried to complete it and couldn't.

The store and district manager refused to honor the rate that I'd reserved, leading me to rent at $398.50/mo, 43% more, since I had movers in 5 days. Their online FAQ specifically says "you can start your rental anytime between now and your move-in date with SmartRental", but apparently doing so led to my reservation being cancelled. Then I showed up at the store and the unit was way smaller than advertised, around 8x14.5, even narrower than 8' at some points due to I-beams. I cancelled and took my business elsewhere, having to scramble with my moving company arriving in just a few days. The store rep was helpful throughout the whole thing. To make matters worse, the storage unit itself was filthy upon move-in. There was visible dirt and debris inside the unit, and the door/interior clearly had not been properly cleaned or maintained before being rented out.

Advertising a $29 move-in cost and then forcing mandatory add-ons that customers cannot reasonably decline already felt misleading, but combining that with poor cleanliness and unhelpful customer service made the entire experience extremely disappointing. I would strongly encourage others to carefully review all charges and inspect their unit before moving anything in.

I left the Apollo Beach location because of Don! Wherever he is …. I’m going. Period! The level of Customer Service and Professionalism is incomparable. I just moved out of the Apollo Beach location; and so glad I did. Since the Sun City location is just up and running less than 2 months, there were no dollies to move my stuff to my storage area. So Don walked back and forth and tried to figure out a solution. “Give me a minute, Paulette, let me see what I can do”. HE HELPED ME MOVE MY STUFF TO THE ELEVATOR! Who does that nowadays? He then went back into the office and found me another unit on the first floor: considerate yet still a businessman. I took it!!!!!!

This place charge 30 dollar late fee after two days late. Price goes up every single month. Started at 150 now I’m at 230. They even kicked my unit with double lock after 2 days late. Go somewhere else. I highly recommend Public Storage. The prices never change.

Initially, what you would expect. But after three months, when everything was moved into the unit, I got a 37% rate increase. Felt like a bait and switch. Recommend going elsewhere.

CubeSmart On the first month of billing, they are starting to steal your money saying that you didn’t have money in your account, trying to charge you extra $30.00 for overdraft in bank statements can prove the money was in the bank. When you call they tell you about all these different fees just to pay your bill. This company is a rip off. Do not do business with them. These people need to be stopped. They are thieves. They are robbers. They are no good and I am not talking about the people who sits at the front desk. I am talking about the billing and the management department..

There has been a huge mouse problem at this CubeSmart facility throughout 2026. They don’t let you know this then try to pass the blame around instead of taking any responsibility. They have said it was the previous renters, that “they did clean it but those are new droppings they didn’t see,” or that they just started working there in November & currently fixing things. Insurance does not cover any mouse damage so rent here at your own risk to lost property.

Kortney said he would credit $25 because of the mice issue but never did. He said that he would contact the district manager but I never heard back after 6 weeks. He then charged nearly $10 on my card to switch to another unit (which also had mouse droppings all over) and said he would return that money within the week. That money has since not been returned to me. Over the past 8 years this facility has went downhill with elevators not working, parking not being available (because of many events happening throughout the building), and the bathrooms getting locked.
