I drove an adjustable bed only, no headboard or nightstands from Las Vegas to Vista California between 7:30 PM and what ended up being 2:00 AM in February due to a transmission that kept overheating. I was given a truck that prompted me 3 times on my drive that the transmission was overheating and to pull over and let idle to cool down. I should’ve been home by midnight and instead after pulling over 3 times it was almost 2:00 AM. Upon calling customer service, they had nothing to offer but an apology. It was my problem that I didn’t call Budget roadside assistance for help. I can’t imagine they’d have a timely solution at midnight in the middle of the desert between Las Vegas and Southern California. I’ll never use Budget truck rental ever again. They gave me a truck instead of a cargo van which is what I rented, the truck stunk and had no Bluetooth as well as was mechanically unfit for its purpose.

One of the worst moves I've ever had. The rental was scheduled for 10 am pickup. It didn't arrive until 1. The truck had been in a wreck, so it was dinged up and gas mileage was horrendous. I called to explain that I had men waiting for 2 1/2 hours due to their negligence, and they gave me a refund of $68 on an $800 truck rental. Will never use them again EVER!!!!

    Worst in every aspect:

    1) Vehicles are not inspected/maintained/serviced - you are risking your life on the road with flat tires, broken suspension, and so on

    2) Roadside service after 10 hours, even during the daytime, even on a major highway in a city area

    3) Even if the vehicle breaks down because it was not serviced on time, the company will not take any responsibility; it will lawyer up, and you will be left high and dry

    4) Reserve the trucks at your own risk and rely on luck is their motto

    5) Not sure if the Budget Car rental does the same because I have not had any roadside issues so far. The Budget Truck Rental is a fraud, irresponsible company for your Moving needs

Go for U-Haul, or Penske, or any other local company instead

Consumer beware! Our family sold our CA home and relocating out of state. I reserved a truck for the day we were to move out. Reservation was made and confirmed weeks in advance (I have the confirmation/reservation number). On the morning of our move, I went to Budget to pick up our 26-foot box truck, but it was rented out. In fact, the entire fleet was rented out to AMAZON! The guy behind the desk said, oh it's Black Friday today and Amazon is our #1 customer, and they needed for trucks due to Black Friday. I said, but I have a reservation and I called early this week to confirm. We have to be out of our house at 5pm tonight so the new buyers can move in. I am a customer too! how can you help me? He said, and I quote; "I can't help you; Amazon took all of our trucks. They are a very important customer!" Suffice to say, we were run over by Budget! Never again!

Budget truck rental charged an additional $1253 to my 93 year old mom’s credit card after the contract amount was already paid. They claimed the truck was driven EXACTLY 2000 miles (not 2018 or 1958, but EXACTLY 2000) and charged for extra miles we didn’t drive (contract was for slightly over 900 miles). It’s around 900 miles from Camp Verde, AZ to Longmont, CO. In addition, two truck numbers were recorded in our records (we only received one truck). CROOKS! We’re still fighting for my 93 yr old mom’s $1253. Two weeks later we rented a Penske to make the same trip - easy peasy, no surprise charges.

My wife and I recently moved about 2,000 miles from Utah to South Carolina. We chose Budget Truck Rental because the price for a 26-foot truck was significantly lower than U-Haul or Penske. We quickly learned why Budget's price is so low: you get what you pay for, or in our case, less.

    The Breakdown and Abandonment
The Problem: Only about 200 miles into our trip, near Rock Springs, Wyoming, the truck's engine lights came on.
Failed Repair: A mechanic dispatched by Budget confirmed he could not fix the critical issue.
Budget's Broken Promises: We contacted Budget, and they promised to send a replacement truck and a crew to help us transfer the entire contents of our packed-to-the-ceiling vehicle.

Stranded: After three full days of being stranded in a hotel in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and despite dozens (no joke) of phone calls to Budget support, the promised replacement truck and crew never arrived.

Taking Matters Into Our Own Hands
With no help in sight and our cross-country move stalled, we were forced to go with a local competitor.
Switching Providers: We rented a truck from Penske—whose truck, support, and service were outstanding.
The Reloading Burden: It took us at least six hours and the help of six other people (some of whom we had to pay) to completely repack the vehicle. This unnecessary delay and labor caused significant stress and demoralization.

The Irony: The second I informed Budget we had secured another moving truck, a tow truck arrived to take their useless vehicle within 90 minutes! They were eager to retrieve their asset but showed no real interest in helping us complete our five-day journey.

    The Insulting Refund Offer

Despite having the optional trip protection service, and after explaining the three-day ordeal via emails and multiple phone calls, Budget refused a full refund. They offered only 30% back, claiming they had provided "some service" to us. If being stranded for three days, delayed, and then having to pay for six hours of manual labor is considered a "service," I strongly advise against using Budget.

    Final Recommendation

Our experience suggests Budget does not maintain its vehicles well and offers abysmal customer service—a fact reinforced by seeing other Budget trucks stranded on the side of the road.

Save yourself the stress and potential disaster. Go with Penske. The peace of mind is absolutely worth the extra money.

I had a confirmation for a cargo van one way rental. We drove an hour to pick it up and they didn't have it. I talked to a supervisor and he said there were none around anywhere. I called customer service and they couldn't do anything. It caused a lot of problems with my move. They offered $250 for another company. But no one rents them one way. So we ended up getting one that had to be returned 12 hours away. Double the gas, time, etc. When I called them they refused to give us the $250.00.

Received a text about 20 hours before my pickup time, simply saying - "Don't have what you reserved, good luck." This seems to be a running theme with Budget. They take the reservation - but they can't keep the reservation. If you are reading this: Don't risk using them. Should have read the reviews first. I didn't.

This has been one of the most awful moving situations I have ever been a part of. I reserved a 16 foot truck quoted at $106. When I arrive to pick up my truck rental, they told me that I had a 12 foot truck reservation and if I wanted a 16 foot truck, it would be $700. The guy inside told me there was nothing you can do about the price and recommended me calling the customer Budget service line. I took the 12 foot truck. I ended up having to make 4 to 5 extra trips in my car wasting about six extra hours of time. I called afterwards as when I picked up the truck. Customer service told me to call back after the reservation was completed to receive some sort of compensation. They offered me $10 back on a total of $143 transaction.

We were extremely frustrated with the condescending and rude manners of the person we spoke with this morning at the A1 Enterprises Inc. in Omaha, NE. We canceled and hung up when he remarked that I was talking over him while saying a truck wouldn't be ready until the afternoon anyway. This was 40min. before the pick up time and we were en route to pick it up. He told me most people would have called to check beforehand. I tried to tell him I received a confirmation email so felt no need to call prior to coming to get it. Not a good look for a company. We will never use again.

The ease of their website was the only positive thing I can say about this company. I had an upcoming move and was very happy to find a truck with a coupon code. So I reserved a truck with them. Price was reasonable and location wasn't far from me. But the day of the move I arrived to pick up my truck and was told they didn't have my truck available. I then asked if they had any size being I had to move today and I had paid movers coming soon. Again he told me no. I asked if there's any trucks in any other locations because again it wasn't a date I could change. Without even looking at the computer or trying to rectify my situation he just told me no. No sympathy, no I'm sorry just a shrug like this happens all the time.

I wound up going to U-Haul and received a truck in mins. But now I'm late to my move and still have to pay my movers for their time. It got done with no help from Budget. Best yet, two days after my move Budget charged my card $150 for the service they didn't supply!! Took hours on the phone to finally receive someone to speak to until finally getting my money back. Save yourself time, money and sanity and never use this company. If I could give 0 stars I would!! But I guess the ease of the online and the customer service when I finally got someone to refund me deserves one star.

I rented a Sprinter Van for a move from Western PA to Boston, MA. Rented the van 5 weeks in advance. Less than 24 hours prior to pickup, I received an email stating the following:

"This is Budget Truck Inventory. I saw you that you booked for a cargo van in Pittsburgh, PA. Has this dealer reached out to you regarding your reservation?

If you have any questions or concerns about your reservation, please feel free to reach out to me. I can assist with any issues you may have. You can reply directly to this email."

No call, just this email. I called the number attached and was told that not only was the particular van I rented not available, that there was no van, box truck or moving truck of any kind available in a 150 mile radius. They offered to get me one the following Monday, which did not fit my moving schedule. When pressed for why this was the case, I was met with the audacious response of, "Your reservation is for the price, not for the actual vehicle." One of the most ridiculous things anybody has ever said to me. When I pressed for any type of customer service I was met with nothing. When I asked to speak with a supervisor I was told one was not available. When I asked to speak to one the next business day I was assured I would receive a call, but did not.

When I followed up via email that I was looking to speak with a supervisor I received crickets from Jene **, Inventory Manager. To sum this up, I booked a reservation 5 weeks in advance of my 500+ mile move and less than 24 hours prior to my pickup time I was told to kick rocks. I will never in my life go anywhere near Budget or Avis for anything and neither should you.

Agent at pickup was completely sexist and addressed my father, instead of me. I rented the vehicle and paid for it. I sought to rent a Budget Truck transport van from the Budget Truck office located at 1400 Cannon Road, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to transport the estate of my recently deceased brother from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to Elmsford, New York. I had arranged for the rental to begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, with a drop off on August 2, 2025. When I arrived at the pick-up site, the agent advised me that there were no vans available and that vans had not been available for months and that “corporate” should not list them on the website as available. The agent then gave me a 12-foot truck.

The truck the agent gave me had the “check engine” light on perpetually. The lady at the rental site told me not to worry because the engine light stayed on permanently because the site had added an after-market converter to the truck. I was uncomfortable driving a truck with a check engine light on, but the lady said that we were renting from an automobile repair place and should not worry and that it was their only truck available.

I took the truck and loaded it on the morning of July 30, 2025. Once loaded, my wife and I got on the road with the intention of driving at least as far as Richmond, Virginia on the way to Elmsford, New York. We got as far as Lumberton, North Carolina, just over the border from South Carolina, and the truck began shaking and a warning appeared on the dashboard that said the transmission was too hot and that we needed to stop driving. We were fortunate enough to be by an exit and pulled off I-95 into a restaurant parking lot in Lumberton, SC.

We called the Budget number for repairs and the vendor used for repairs/replacements finally arranged for a mechanic to come by at 11:00 p.m. on July 29, 2025. The mechanic inspected the truck and determined that the after-market equipment installed by the pick-up location was causing the transmission to overheat and said that we needed a truck swap. The vendor advised us that the replacement truck would be delivered by the vendor by 9:30 a.m. on July 30, 2025. Consequently, we were forced to stay overnight in Lumberton at a cost of $181.33.

On July 31, 2025, at about 11:20 a.m., the Vendor called me to advise me that the Budget manager had denied a truck swap. The vendor’s agent said that a check-engine light was not a sufficient reason for a swap. I explained that the issue was not the check engine light, but the warning that the transmission had overheated and the truck could not be driven safely. The vendor’s agent said she would attempt to connect the manager with the mechanic.

On July 31, 2025, at 12:42 p.m., the vendor told me that the Budget manager had spoken with the mechanic and agreed that a replacement truck would be delivered on August 1, 2025, because it was so late in the day. Since we did not have a truck and we were told by the vendor that the replacement truck would not be delivered until the next day, we extended our stay at the hotel for another night at a cost of $151.83.

The replacement truck was delivered at 7:44 p.m. and the load swap team did not arrive until 11:30 p.m. We finally were able to leave Lumberton at 7:00 a.m. on August 1, 2025.

    1. Budget provided me with an obviously unsafe truck. This was not an unpredictable breakdown. The breakdown was caused by the Budget agent’s improper replacement of or addition of an after-market converter that caused the transmission to overheat. The mechanic who inspected the truck after it broke down was clear that the after-market equipment caused the truck’s breakdown. Thankfully, the broken truck did not cause injury to my wife or me.

    2. Because of the truck breakdown, my wife and I had to stay overnight in Lumberton, NC for two nights at a total cost of $333.16. In addition, we had to buy lunch and dinner on July 31, 2025.

    3. The unsafe truck, the ridiculous refusal of the Budget manager to approve the truck swap, and the more than 24-hours it took Budget to provide me a replacement truck and swap team caused my wife and I much undue stress when we were already dealing with the death of a family member. As I said, we were moving my brother’s estate.

I am truly outraged by the horrible experience we had with Budget Trucks. What a completely insensitive way to treat customers: knowingly renting out faulty equipment that could have caused serious physical injury, denying a replacement truck, and being painfully slow to remedy the problem.

After several calls and long holds I finally got ahold of roadside assistance who couldnt give me an ETA on service. After an hour I got a text that it would be another 93 mins which turned into a wait of 4 hours. Then parts had to be approved, more waiting.. I was told Budget would pay for a room for us. They did not I had to pay, they said I would have a new truck the next day - after numerous calls that didnt happen. Then I was told Monday morning I would have a new truck, when I called at 9ish I was told I was a low priority and no one had been dispatched.

My 3 dogs, two adult kids and myself were stranded in SC for 3 days. When the tow truck driver got there he stated they had 6 brand new trucks on the lot and they gave this truck to you... the new truck was in worse shape than the first from appearances. Finally we got back on the road and 45 mins from our new home the swapped out truck starts to break down... I spent money I didn't have and lost several days work, my daughter lost a job opportunity, my dogs were beyond stressed. Then they had the audacity to charge me for gas when there was 1/2 a tank when we got the second truck and we filled it to 1/2 and the first truck that broke down we had just filled up. I am a disabled veteran (70% service-connected disability) and Budget Truck Rental has completely failed me. On August 1, 2025, I rented a Budget truck with a car trailer for a move. The trailer was defective from the start—the coupler was seized, and the jack was broken, making it impossible to disconnect or safely operate. For the past 3 days, I have been stuck with faulty equipment while being bounced between Roadside Assistance and Customer Service, with zero help or accountability from Budget.

Despite claiming to be “veteran-friendly,” Budget has shown absolute disregard for my disability status and safety. I physically cannot unload the trailer myself due to my injuries, yet Budget refuses to send a replacement or provide meaningful assistance. I’ve been forced to extend my rental, paying more money, while Budget hides behind endless call transfers. This is dangerous negligence—especially for a company that markets itself as veteran-supportive. If you’re a veteran, disabled, or simply want reliable customer service, stay away from Budget Truck Rental.

AVOID THIS COMPANY – PAY MORE ELSEWHERE AND SAVE YOUR SANITY. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this experience, it’s that Budget’s corporate structure is not designed to resolve customer disputes or stand behind their equipment. I typically rent from Enterprise, but because they don’t offer one-way box truck rentals, I chose Budget. That decision ended up costing me far more than I "saved."

I reserved a 16-foot truck and car trailer weeks in advance to move out of state. I made it clear to the staff that I had a strict 6 PM departure deadline because of a 14-hour drive, movers scheduled for 2 PM the next day, and my daughter’s 2nd birthday party that weekend. I expected a seamless process, but what I got instead was an exhausting and costly ordeal.

The Nightmare Timeline: Trailer Hookup Issue: After packing my entire home into the truck, I returned for the trailer hookup only to be told the truck wasn’t equipped with the proper towing control panel, meaning no functioning brakes or blinkers. The only “solutions” offered were to swap trucks (impossible after 4 hours of loading) or call roadside assistance.

Roadside Delays: Roadside arrived 4 hours later, fixed the wiring in 45 minutes, and I didn’t depart until 10 PM—already four hours late.

Trailer Strap Failure: When I attempted to load my car, the trailer’s straps were rusted and jammed. Roadside had to come back with WD-40 and a hammer, delaying me another 2 hours. My family (wife, toddler, and dogs) waited anxiously so we could travel together for safety. We finally left at midnight.

Blown Tire on the Trailer: Two hours into the trip, a trailer tire exploded due to bent fenders I was never informed about. We were stranded at a truck stop for over 5 hours while roadside sourced a rim and tire. My baby spent nearly 24 hours in a car seat, and we slept in the truck stop parking lot worried for our safety.

    The Financial Fallout:
    Lost $200 deposit for movers
Paid an additional $600 for expedited movers
    Extra food and gas expenses

Nearly $2,300 paid to Budget for equipment that was unsafe and poorly maintained

Customer Service Disaster: When I called Budget the next day, the local manager admitted he couldn’t do anything and told me to contact corporate. Corporate initially said they’d “comp the rental,” but then changed their position and only offered $200. After escalating, “Level 2” customer service offered $500 max—but only after I returned the truck, effectively leaving me no choice. It’s been nearly a month since then, and no one has followed up despite their promises.

Final Verdict: Budget is cheap for a reason. The money you save upfront will cost you far more in delays, stress, and out-of-pocket expenses. Their equipment is poorly maintained, their support is painfully slow, and their customer service is structured to deflect responsibility instead of fixing problems.

Do yourself a favor: Rent from a company that values its customers and stands behind its service. I will never rent from Budget again—and if you value your time, money, and sanity, you shouldn’t either.

I wish there would have been another option to rent a truck seeing all the bad reviews, but we didn't have a choice on our timeline. My husband went to pick up the truck which I rented online. He was having a conversation with the woman (I will withhold her name for now) saying how we had a quick turnaround to get everything done. She knew she had us. She told my husband that she could not rent him the vehicle unless he bought the full insurance package ($379) because he did not have a commercial license.

She said it was Budget corporate policy. First, that is not true. Second, I had checked to make sure this vehicle didn't require a commercial license and third I had called our insurance company and we were covered in specific for rental box trucks on our policy. Having no other option for a different truck on short notice, he paid the money. I called the facility and no one called me back (not surprised).

I called Budget customer service and was told "Well you bought the insurance so there isn't anything we can do". I asked for a manager to call me back and did not get a return call. I'm sure the owner of the Pelandale facility was patting the clerk on the back for soaking some guy for all that money. They get commission on all those sales. On a positive note, the truck was very nice and our return location was very nice. Just stay away from this facility. I wish Budget would pull their contract with these folks.

We rented a truck to move from Baltimore (Budget of Catonsville) to Pittsburgh (Ruffing Automotive Inc.) and had a very subpar experience. The pick-up process and the truck itself were ok, what you’d expect from a truck rental, but the return process and customer service were bad. We booked online directly from the Budget Truck website with a drop-off in Pittsburgh at Ruffing Automotive Inc. on a Sunday at 4pm. Surprised that the drop-off location didn’t mention the Budget brand anywhere online, we called Budget Truck the day before the scheduled drop-off to ask for clarifications about the self drop-off process in case Ruffing Automotive Inc. was closed on drop-off day.

There, the person on the phone told us that Ruffing Automotive Inc. would be closed and that it actually does not have self drop-off, even though the booking website offered it as an option for our drop-off time. We therefore had to switch the drop-off location to Pdc Rental Inc., 15 miles away (30 minutes) from the original location. If the website had only let us book this latter drop-off location, we would have planned accordingly and it would have been fine, but having to change our plans during the move was a huge inconvenience.

When we got to Pdc Rental Inc., a big sign on the door said: “No Truck return in this parking lot. Please return to driveway beside restaurant” with the actual name of the restaurant taped over and no other indication of where to go. There were a number of restaurants around and no Budget logo or Budget branded trucks to be seen. We once again called only to get a rather unhelpful customer service reading us over and over the same instructions to return cars, not trucks, in the parking lot we were already in. We ended up driving around to finally see a couple Budget branded trucks parked in an empty lot, nowhere near any restaurant.

We parked there and dropped the keys in the box back at Pdc Rental Inc., making the whole self return process take 45 minutes when it could have taken five if we had had clear instructions or clear signage. It looks like Budget Truck subcontracts the handling of pick-ups and drop-offs to individual businesses but knows nothing about them on their websites or when you call. We should have gone with U-Haul as we usually do.

I reserved a 16' Gas Parcel Van almost a month in advance for a two-state move. Twenty hours before pickup I was sent a text that the van was not available, and I could settle for a 12' van for $130 more than the larger one I reserved. When I questioned why I was told "that's all they had, and the price was what the computer said." Explaining that my furniture would not all fit in a 12' van and the price was higher did not concern the rental agent. It was basically, pay the price and take what we have available or not.

Do not trust Budget Truck Rental! I have rented Budget Truck about a month ago, as we need to complete a move within 2 days. They just called the day before in the afternoon, saying truck not available. They cannot do anything about it. This has put on tremendous trouble and we need to scramble through different options at the last moment. Horrible!

Budget are liars. They rent my reserved vehicle to someone else. Twice. And have now left me having to rent from somewhere else costing me 5100 dollars more for the rental. Their insulating offer for the the difference was 250 dollars. These scum should be shut down. Appalling handling of customers.

I reserved a truck over 10 days ago, only to be told within 20 hours left that they didn't have a truck. When I asked for options they just offered a customer service number and kept blaming 'it's just the end of the month'. Bruh, that's why I reserved it 10 DAYS AGO. Never again!!
